This place is fantastic: charming location, total sweetheart staff and delicious, non-overly sweet Thai food. The tom kha, pad see ew, pad prikh king and fried rice (dang I love fried rice of any stripe, and this may top all) are consistently great. Plus they have that incredible hot chili oil - I like getting it with takeout, diluting it in a jar with grapeseed oil and using it for months.

The staff are perfectly nice, but the food is mediocre and bland.

I docked them a star because the prices havent changed, however portion size has gotten much smaller. However, its still more than enough food, but I dont like paying the same for less. The food is excellent, my favorite Thai joint in town for sure. I like to get the shrimp fried rice. Its great as a meal by itself because its full of veggies and the shrimp are big and flavorful. The pad thai is excellent as well. The fresh spring rolls are the best i've EVER had! If you get them to go make sure you ask for an extra sauce, its a sweeter sauce (has peanuts in it, but not peanut sauce). I bought a bunch for a dinner party once and they were a huge hit. The only other thing I don't like is that they arnt open on Sundays, I always seem to crave Thai the most on sundays haha. The staff has always been very quick and friendly.

i haven't been in for a dine-in experience, so i can't comment on the wait staff, but i can say that the food was exceptional. i found all of the sauces to be expertly executed, and the vegetables were not overcooked and had a very fresh feel to them. so far it's my very favorite thai place. will update once i've tried a few more things and places. it's great, but not quite up to par with the place in my home town. i won't stop trying thai places until i find one as good or better.

day 10 of my trip so of course another person offered to buy me lunch, how could i refuse her??? i would have to be a real dumbarse. so we came here. the thai food was pretty good and they had lunch specials. they got my order wrong and they remade my food in a matter of minutes! price is reasonable. service good. they have a ton of different noodles you can order, thats the main difference i noticed here. the variety of noodles. its small and quaint. me likey!

i always go here for Thai in portland. we even order to go and pick it up sometimes. the service is lickity-split fast, and i'm pretty sure they have the best pad thai. they're not kidding around with the spice level, so beware. i'm not really a reviewer very often, but we eat here so often just had to give them the cred they deserve. mmmmm

The soup here is AMAZING! If you are up for flavor galore you better order up the Tomyum. Those spices will make your nose run, your tastebuds will do the funky chicken, and you will be knocking down their doors to get another hit of that delicious dish to quiet those cravings. Once you get that first taste on your tongue you better be prepared for some serious withdrawals.

Been here twice, pretty expensive for some alright Thai Food. They have some funky Thailand statues. This place really feels like you're in Bangkok or something. Its located in Downtown Portland near the waterfront and Burnside.

I was encouraged to try this by one of the the owners who is a friend of mine. I was very happy to go all the way over here from my neighborhood close-in in SW. We stopped in for an early dinner and it was fantastic. I had the crispy rice lettuce wrap (Nam Kao) and I'm craving it even now! The service was friendly and efficient, the restaurant is clean and well kept. The only reason I did not give E-San five stars is that when it's crowded, it's really hard to hear because the sound of voices bounces off the ceiling in the cavernous head space. It's certainly not enough to prevent me from going back and is overwhelmed by the food. Thank you, Pham family!

Since the E-San downtown on second is one of my favorite Thai places in Portland, I figured this would be a sure thing. Sadly, not so much. Compared to the downtown place, the portions just seemed smaller and the flavors not very strong, a little more bland than I expected. The person I was with ordered the pineapple fried rice. Every time any of us have ordered it downtown, it came served inside half of a fresh pineapple. Not here, it was just a pile on a plate. Our server seemed somewhat disinterested. I dunno, while there was nothing wrong with it per se, Ill just go to the one downtown next time I'm craving E-San.

This is a good place to get great, inexpensive food in Portland. I have been here several times and have placed some large orders for company meetings and I can never go wrong with E-San. There are a lot of great things about this place but my main praise is that I can customize these well loved dishes to accomodate for my vegetarians and still keep my meat eaters happy. Their salad rolls. The Pad Kee Mao and of course the Pad Thai (beef, chicken, or tofu) are always office favorites. I just tried the Mango Over Sweet Rice for dessert last time and it was pretty good. You can also choose your level of heat (mile, medium, hot, extra hot, extra extra hot...) I get medium (or mild for meetings) and that is plenty spicy... believe me.

I have visited this establishment for years. I have not had a dish I didn't like. I am somewhat of a picky eater and they are always so accommodating with no attitude at all. They are friendly, fast, and consistent and reasonably priced. My favorite is the Pad Kee Mau with beef no bell peppers medium spicy. Perfect. I love their salad rolls it has no meat in it and the sauce is spicy sweet. Once during mango season I asked for the their mango desert. It had a ripe sliced mango on top of a sticky sweet rice....OMG, delicious! We have had them cater our "All hands meeting" several times and all the employees find something they love. The curries are a huge hit. If we have any left overs at all it is just the curry sauce and the guys always ask me to bring in cooked white rice the next day so they can put the left over curry sauce over.

I wound up working late tonight and getting hungry, so I decided to try this place, as I had noticed it a time or two when going to The Clearing cafe for coffee. Anyway, the place is small, comfortable, and my waitress was extremely pleasant (almost overly so). The prices seemed quite reasonable - right in line with what one would expect. I decided to try something different, and with the waitresses' hearty endorsement, ordered the Thai BBQ Chicken. It was, in fact, quite delicious, and not a bad deal at all at $10.50 for a half chicken. The skin was perfectly crisp and seasoned with a delicate but still flavorful lemongrass honey sauce. To be honest, I didn't want to stop eating it! My only gripe would be the rather small side of plain steamed broccoli that came with it. Not that there was anything wrong with it - just that it was a very small serving, and it was just plain, unadorned steamed broccoli. At least they could've stir fried it with some soy sauce or something. Minor gripe aside, I had a very satisfying meal here, and will definitely try it again.

Just ate there this evening. One of my favorite SE Asian dishes is a green papaya salad and I wanted something light so that's what I got. I literally could not eat it. I am not a picky eater and am definitely a food lover. The salad tasted like pure fish sauce. Bleh.

This might be the only place in Portland--and definitely in Northwest--where you can get an entrée for about $11 and not have to wait in line forever. It's off the beaten path and does its heaviest business at lunchtime, so come dinner it's fairly quiet. The food here is consistently good, and there are plenty of options to pick from. The service can be less than stellar, but it's not awful.

    (4)
  • Jeff R.

I've been a regular here on and off for a few years. Much of the staff has remained the same, and every time I eat here i'm greeted with warm smiles and kind folks. The food is consistently great - I've never had a bad meal, and everyone I've brought has been impressed with the quality. The noodle dishes are stellar (the pad gai is a staple), the curries are great and the stir fries are always perfect. The restaurant itself is cute and quiet, in a nice, convenient part of NW Portland. At one time it was associated with the E-san in SW portland, but doesn't seem to be any longer. That's fine, as the food at this location is consistently much better. And as a bonus, it's a short walk over to St. Honore for dessert.

The grub here is decent but the rulz are lame! I've been here 3 times so far and every time it's after the lunch rush and the place is empty. I go with 2 friends and each time they say "sit anywhere" and we always go for the 2 tables in the middle and they immediately say "NO, NOT THERE. THAT'S FOR BIG PARTIES"! If u have been here u would know the sitting is cramped. All I'm sayin is its 2 o'clock and the chances of them filling up and missing a chance to seat a 6 top is pretty slim. This place sux...

  • Beyoung Y.

Wow, even though the restaurant was packed I was able to order within a few minutes of sitting down. My drink came out right away and the food took less then 8 minutes to make. The yellow curry fried rice was good, a bit salty but not overbearing. I was in and out within 20 minutes.

I tried E-San for the first time yesterday for lunch. I can't say how slow or fast the service was as I was about 30 minutes late meeting my boyfriend there. I had green tea waiting and I was very pleased that it was filled quickly whenever I hit the half way point without ever asking. As I am not a coffee drinker this was a strange and new thing that I really appreciated... seems that places are always prompt with coffee, so I have noticed, but tea usually requires a hint at some places and or those little light up cones that flaggers now use when a plane is cleared for landing at other places. The restaurant was nice, cute and well kept. The staff was friendly and prompt. Now for the most important part... the food! I ordered *** Mao's Special with shrimp - medium on the hotness scale. The rice was a little under cooked which I really didn't care about as I usually don't eat much of the rice but the flavor... oh the flavor was absolute amazing!!! It came with steamed broccoli, green bell peppers, onion with peanuts in a curry sauce... it was so good that when I finished with all the veggies and shrimp I started spreading the rice around to soak of any little tiny drops of the sauce that was left. Sooo good! My boyfriend ordered the *** Pad Thai with Chicken also of medium heat so that I could try it. I thought it was alright but to be fair I tried it after Mao's Special which pretty much over shadowed the Pad Thai. I didn't have anything to clear my palette so I would try it again but before I start on Mao's Special next time because I WILL be back for more!

I'm actually pretty frustrated with this place. The other night I was really craving their pineapple fried rice and so I waited patiently all Saturday for them to open (they don't open until 4). I called them at about 5 or so, maybe a bit later than that and they still didn't answer the phone. Since I live close I thought I'd just walk down there, order my food, and wait for it to take home. So I get down there and they are closed! WTF?!?! There was no sign on the door that I noticed, nothing. Just darkness. I'll probably eat here again, but at the same time I'm going to be a little hesitant. My first-hand knowledge about food quality and such may not be spot-on keen, but I know if you want to run a successful business you have to be open when you say you are going to be open. Maybe something awful happened, so I don't want to be too mean, but at the same time, RAWR. The other times I've been there the spiciness as been really inconsistent. I order medium spice every time and the first time I couldn't taste the spice at all and the second time it was so hot it burnt my mouth... and I'm not a spice pussy. I actually like things on the spicy side. Plus, why does one location serve the rice in a pineapple but not another location? The Thurman location apparently does not do it like the downtown one does. That is petty, I realize, but I like the pineapple. It's like getting a happy meal when you're six years old and not getting the toy! Edited to add: Never get their spring rolls to go. I ate the rice again a few days ago and the spiciness was right on. Also, I really like the guy that works there on the weekends. He is incredibly nice and you can tell wants the restaurant to do well. He's probably the reason I'll go back. :)

Had high hopes after reading the reviews. Came away SORELY disappointed at the lack of flavor in the food and how RIDICULOUSLY expensive it is! $15 for an entree when the portion is the same as that of other area Thai restaurants which charge HALF the price! To sum up: go to ANY other Thai restaurant in the neighborhood. You'll come away happier and with more money in your wallet. Actually, I have more to say: not only was I sorely disappointed in the taste of the food (or more accurately, the lack thereof), the more I thought about it, the more I really became insulted. The fact of the matter is, I was taken advantage of by this restaurant. What I mean by that, is I was not only served sub-par food, I was sold a portion that should have cost literally HALF what this did - and the more I steam on that, the more I am upset that I spent so much money at this place. That is all.

I am an absolute snob when it comes to Thai food. Any vegan will tell you that on your average road trip, you pray for a Thai restaurant in whatever hell-hole you pass through at lunch time. The presence of a Thai restaurant means you'll be able to eat and your order won't resemble: "I'd like the Southwestern Chicken Salad, please. But no chicken. Or cheese. Or sour cream." "So.. lettuce, tomatoes, and corn?" "*sigh* Yeah." As a result, I've probably consumed about 100 times my body weight in Thai food. I know what I like, what I don't like, and what mystifies me. You know what mystifies me? The amount of salt that several restaurants in Portland add to their food! I can fully admit that my sodium consumption will probably kill me one day, but somehow E-San managed to salt my dish in a way that left me sucking down countless glasses of water. I ordered the Pad Phet (an eggplant dish) and was also rather disappointed at the lack of eggplant in it. A few chunks of eggplant does not Pad Phet make! Aside from that, I was rather pleased with everything. The lunch specials are generously sized and only $6.95 (assuming you order tofu and vegetables, not meat) and our food arrived very quickly. Their "hot" rating left me a little cold - order the extra or extra extra hot if you're like me and enjoy the sensation of burning off taste buds. All in all, a fair meal. My friend's Evil Prince curry was very delicious from the few bites I managed to sneak from across the table.

Used to be Better. At one time, we frequently ate at this restaurant, but they must have had a different cook then. Most recently, we tried again with the same unsatisfactory results as the prior two visits: the fried rice dishes were overly greasy and many of the the lemongrass chicken pieces were charred and needed to be cut away. (Perhaps the chef worked in a crematorium previously.) Even the slices of chicken that were not charred had bits of charred detritus adhering to them; the grill needs to be cleaned more frequently. (Charring meat creates carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines.) Yet among the charred slices was a slice that was still partially raw. The dishes were still tasty, but the execution poor. Service was fine. We won't be returning.

Just had a light meal. The spring rolls appetizer was a no-holds-barred 5* affair. Bean sprouts and noodles and tofu and carrots and cilantro (lots of crunch) all wrapped up in a delicate rice skin, served with a light, tasty peanut dipping sauce. The green curry with chicken was great too. The server explained their green, yellow and red curries as climbing the spiciness ladder. At rung one, the green had some kick. Not too much, mind you, but if you are a light weight (like my wife :-), beware. They have lots of dishes that can be made mild as well. Very reasonable prices. Friendly folks. Homey atmosphere. They seem to do a big lunch business (from Montgomery Park workers?) but are not usually crowded for dinner. Definitely worth it - I'll be back.

A Thai place that really knows how to make some Pad Thai. Great location, quick service, small-cozy atmosphere. One of my favorite places to have lunch in the NW District. The Thai Tea is really good too!

Good place for an inexpensive, delicious lunch if you're around the area working or strolling. Some of the waitstaff are very nice, others are really direct and always seem annoyed. That's OK, all I want is a quick, tasty lunch and this place will get your order out in less than 5 minutes! I would not go here any other time of day, sounds like their dinner prices are through the roof. For an outstanding Thai experience, check out Thai Pod on E. Broadway.

The food I've had here gets five stars - it's really good, better than the other E-San locations I've tried. I get the #10 lunch special, yumm. BUT. The ventilation here is terrible! The minute I walk in my eyes and throat start bothering me. I want to find the owner, shake them and shout at them that I'd come much more often if it weren't so unbearable to sit inside! I get take-out more than I dine in, for this reason. Some of my co-workers and I are thinking of starting a petition for an exhaust fan.

    (4)
  • Jill K.

E-San is close to my house and I usually order take-out a couple times a month. The service is always great, prices are reasonable and the food is great. I've had thai food at other restaurants that tastes very bland but E-San never disappoints!

  • Dave H.

I love their swimming angel dish, and typically I hate peanut sauce. I'm not sure what they're doing differently, but I hope they keep doing it. The spring rolls are a great starter as well, and the portions are big enough that I usually end up getting two meals out of one dinner. I don't understand the complaints about the price, I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 including an appetizer, a beer, and a tip. The food is prepared very quickly, even for a Thai place, so that's a nice plus as well if you decide to stop in a get something to go without calling ahead. I'm getting really hungry typing this. I think I know where I'll be going for lunch tomorrow.

Food is really good! I have tried three other spots here in Portland and love drunken noodles. Noodles had a very fresh taste and give an option of spice. The beef in my dish was more generous then the other places i have tried. For my first time here they did a great job. And the lady that took my order was the first person I met in the nw neighborhood dinning area (around my place) that was genuinely nice. Which is great because I just moved to the neighborhood and so far being kind is lacking from other dinning experiences.

Been going for YEARS and would even if it wasn't in my hood. Great Thai at great prices. Owner is a wonderful lady who cares about getting it right. Favorites? Green Curry with Chicken, for sure. And the Sizzling Rice thingie with lettuce leaves. But hey, its all above average and reliably good.

  • Miquel M.

Went there for lunch & is not what it used to be...smaller portions, everything too salty & as soon they brought the food...they brought the check...it sounds like they wanted the customers out there quickly...

  • Tony T.

Good go to place for Thai food for lunch, I'm not sure there is anything super special about this place where I'd go out of my way to come here when I'm not in the neighborhood. It's pretty cheap and they split the bill up for you if you want so I suppose that's a plus. Food is good, just nothing special.

    (3)
  • Jacob W.

Great food, uniquely named menu items, fast and friendly service. It's a nice quiet place to sit and relax and enjoy some of Portland's best Thai food... Need I say more?

    (5)
  • Joshua D.

This was a disappointment. My first issue was a minor quibble; no sticky rice? Every Thai place I've gone has had sticky rice. As it turns out, I wasn't that bothered, because that would have been good money after bad. Second, and the big one: my duck curry was more skin and bones than meat. Not only was the actual duck nearly nonexistent, but I quit eating after about a third of the dish because I had to pick duck bones of various sizes from my mouth on every bite. I avoided them the best I could, but they couldn't have dumped more bones in there if they were trying to spite me. The flavor was fine, I suppose - not great or even particularly good, but would have been fine. But it wasn't good enough to be worth choking on a duck bone. The end of the meal brought one more little annoyance. As a restaurant, when you split a check for $32.75 down the middle, you have some options. You can charge one person $16.38 and the other $16.37. If the math is challenging, you can do $16.35 and $16.40, or even $16.25 and $16.50. You can even round down a couple cents to $16.35 each; it's certainly no requirement, but it's a tiny touch that will impress someone like me. What you absolutely cannot do, never ever, is round UP. $16.40 plus $16.40 is not $32.75. I'm well aware that five cents is an amount that I wouldn't reach under my car seat to retrieve, but it says something about your attitude towards customers to round up, and it doesn't say anything good. The food was brought out impressively quickly. It would have been more impressive to make the food better though.

New owner or something. When it was E-San, I frequented this place at least every other month. I almost always ordered the same dish as well as salad rolls and spring rolls. However, things are not necessarily the same. My eggplant is often under cooked.

While Thai food isn't my usual go-to, I was nevertheless pleased with my recent first visit to Maiphai Thai. For once my man was craving tom kha instead of pho, so off we went around the corner. Maiphai's a step up from standard takeout Thai, and a common feature of all our dishes was the unexpected level of elegance with sauces. The peanut sauce, the tom kha broth, the brown sauce over the stir-fry: all light and lovely, none of the too-heavy, too-sweet, too-one-note character that seems to plague Americanized Thai food. Portions were just right for sharing an appetizer, soup, and stir-fry between two people. The spice level definitely skews Westernized; we ordered hot, but next time we'll kick it up to extra-hot (this from someone who would usually order medium spice somewhere with a more street-food/authentic menu). Tom kha's usually the standard by which I judge, and this was pretty good: nice spice level and good flavor complexity. Service was so fast and so friendly, and many people cycled through for take-out during our dinner there; I'm sure we'll be one of them in the future. Pretty much everything comes with a tofu option (unless it's a curry specifically made with fish or duck) so it's a good spot for a group of varied eaters. This isn't necessarily my Thai, but that's no complaint against Maiphai's menu and culinary execution. If you want quick, tasty, and well-priced Thai (for takeout or dining in), and especially if you're in the neighborhood, head over. I know I will!

    (3)
  • Mike W.

Everything seemed fine until we took the food out of the bag. I was really quite surprised that the container of curry wasn't even filled half way. The curry sauce itself was as this as water. Portland has some decent thai spots but this apparently isn't one of them. Unfortunately this wasn't my only attempt at a decent meal from Maiphai but it was definitely my last.

I really enjoy this place. I'm a sucker for restaurants that I can get in, get my food, eat, and pay my bill with no fuss. This place offers all that and friendly service. I'm not sure about the complaints about price, seating, flavor and portion, but I urge all of them to look in the mirror...maybe it's you. I love a good Pad Thai dish. The simpler the better and they make it extremely spicy like I like. I could eat here every day and not have one complaint. Well I do have one complaint...turn the heat up in the place. It's a go to for me. Try it for yourself.

  • Jake L.

Really great neighborhood Thai! Very impressed with the level of spiciness and authenticity of the dishes. While I've only gotten take-out, there's plenty of seating, and in this tucked-away corner of town, you would rarely fight for a table.

  • Lisa B.

This place is convenient for take-out, and the service is always friendly. The problem is the inconsistency of spice. I like pad Thai to be medium, and that's how I order it at any Thai restaurant. However, the spiciness is extremely inconsistent here. Sometimes it is so hot that I need to swallow each bite with a glass of water. Other times, it is so bland that I wonder if they added any spice to it at all. Please, Maiphai -- get it together. Pick a side and stick to it.

  • Amy A.

I come here often (once a week or so) but only out of convenience because it is so close to my work. When the Thai-food craving hits, there are only so many options within walking distance to the office. E-San is one of those options. Not to be confused with E-San Thai Cuisine on SW 2nd and Pine, or North Denver, this "E-San" seems to have a different owner/operator. The food is inconsistent. For instance, on one Thursday I ordered Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) and was delighted. It was similar to every other Pad Kee Mao I had ordered in the past at other restaurants, but when I ordered it again on Monday (and convinced my boss to order the same) it came out as a vegetable dish with about 5 noodles, and the portion was about half the size as before. This has happened multiple times at this restaurant. The things I like about this place are: The location - Super convenient and parking is pretty easy to find. The speed - They are very quick, so when you are looking for a fast lunch, you can be sure to get in and out as soon as possible here. The taste - The food is pretty decent. Not great, but not bad at all either. Things I don't like: The size - It's tiny! Maybe 8 or so tables for 2 or 4 makes it sometimes difficult to get a table around lunch time, with no foyer to wait in (meaning you get to stand outside in the cold until a table is available). The inconsistency - You really never know what you are going to get. For a quick bite, this is the place to go in the area, but if you are looking for the best Thai food in Portland, go elsewhere.

I really love eating Asian food on the West coast because it is so freaking good!! E-San is no different. Food is really fresh and tasty, if I had a chance (Portland Gods??) to eat here more often I would probably like just about everything on the menu. They have a couple of outdoor tables that are really adorable if you have a nice day and want to be outside. Know that if you ask for your food spicy they won't kid around. They also give generous portions at great prices so you can eat fresh, tasty, affordable Thai food more than once making it easy on the wallet. Yes!

Sooooo pleased. ! Great food! Loved it! I got the # 10 lunch special. Vegi stir fry with tofu. Came with rice. Delicious! I got this sweet sugar rice, with mango on top for desert. Jeeeeze! I'm going back just to get that.

This is the second E-San I've tried. We ordered the Crispy Trout here on Thurman, hoping it would be similar to the Crispy Trout dish on 2nd and Pine, but it was not. No matter, it was delicious, as was the chicken green curry and the pad kee mao (I think it was labeled slightly differently in their menu) that we got to round out our meal. Round was definitely what we were after we ate every single bite of food. Everything on the table was flavorful and excellently cooked. The only drawback, and this is huge for me, and caused me to remove a star from a stellar meal with excellent service: NO STICKY RICE. If this is not a big deal for you, and Thai food doesn't mean sticky rice with some type of curry HAS TO BE on the menu, this restaurant has amazingly flavorful food, and a cozy, chill dining area.

Seemed like I started noticing e-san mentioned in different places, so since I work really lose from here, my husband and I decided to have some dinner here. It is a very sweet, small, cute restaurant. The waiter and was very kind, and knew a lot about everything on the menu. We ordered a noodle dish and a veggie dish. They were delicious! The vegetables were cooked, yet still had that crunchy texture. The shrimp and meat were cooked to perfection too. But it definitely did not blow my mind away. They only have one dessert... wish they had at least 3... Unfortunately e-san did not blow my mind, and I think that I might try other options in the area before returning again.

Tod muhn plah fish cake appetizer was really the best of what I had to eat there. The tom yum goong (shrimp) was tasty as well. The pork with holy basil could have used more basil for sure. I was OK with the prices. What was putting me off the constant intrusion of the waiter with the gay factor turned up too high. I couldn't care less what a persons persuasion is, but I don't want to participate either way. Atmosphere was non-desrcript with the usual Thai decorations, but nothing more. Like my rating says, just OK.
