Wasn't a fan. Nothing was very impressionable and I probably won't give it a second chance. I can see why people go since it's a beautiful neighborhood but there is better quality to be had. Save your money...get a great bottle of beer at John's Market, rent a movie from Impulse Video and get a frozen pizza from the closest market. You'll save money and your dinner will be the better of the two options.

I like the SE location. The patio where families hangout is so nice. I like how dog friendly this bar is. Good happy hour and decent food.

This place is a comfortable oasis in an otherwise relatively tightly packed part of town. They have comfortable spread out seating, a parking lot, good food at good prices, and AC. It's well lit and the staff is friendly enough. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area.

Stopped in for a quick beer... I love the all of the dog artwork all over the place. They have darts and games to play. There is an outdoor but covered area in the back where you can bring your dogs with you to have some fun. The beer was OK for me.. Not my favorite but I'd be willing to try again. Great service, everyone very friendly. We didn't eat here but I saw food coming out and things looked pretty good. If you are a dog lover this is your place!

When I was looking at places to grab a drink during my weekend in Portland, this place was at the top of my list. Yes I have a labrador. A chocolate one to be exact. The staff here was friendly, welcoming, and pretty awesome. It's a nice big place with plenty of seating. My favorite thing was spying the hops growing outside the place as you walked in. Didn't have any food, but drank a flight of beer. The beer was pretty darned good, and I wished I could take some home to CA to share with friends but alas, no liquids allowed on the plane. Wish we had more places like this near home.

I walked in, thinking the beer and ambiance were all very very awesome. Dogs are everywhere and they make their own beers. I had the mutt I think and it was delicious - and I never like beer. But then I decided to order the pulled pork burger. What a mistake for a Carolina native. The sauce was weak in flavor and amount. To me, BBQ pork is drenched and dripping in BBQ sauce, and this sandwich was just eaten way too cleanly. I found Lucky Lab's food to be unimpressive compared to their awesome home-y interior and amazing beer selection. Drink here. Eat elsewhere.

The beer was pretty good, the pulled pork sandwich was alright. It's one of those places that if I was in the area I would eat there but I wouldn't drive out of my way or anything.

Great beer and I had some food there a while back. Nothing fancy but good normal food. Soup, sandwiches etc. Love the laid back atmosphere and this place is always busy. Lots of people playing board games and talking and just generally a good place to hang out.

Great patio. Decent beer. We came because it is dog friendly. Very dog friendly and that really cool. They serve pretty decent sandwiches, but stay the heck away from the bento. Cold and under cooked rice paired with a rubber chicken skewer and a tepid peanut sauce slathered on top leaves one a bit disappointed.

One of my favorite places to go in Stumptown. Cool and lay back environment, great cheese pizza and awesome brews that follow the North West brewing traditions and flavor. Take a bike ride here and then reward yourself with a beer, trust me you will thank me later. My only regret was I never got a beer glass from here.

Admittedly, I have no tried the food, only the beer. While the atmosphere is open and down to earth, and the food menu looks great, the beer falls flat. When you're surrounded by so many top tier breweries and brew pubs, standing out is a hard thing to do. Unfortunately Lucky Labrador is just average. The beer didn't quite resonant with me, being somewhat middle of the road normal. Unfortunate, because the rest of the environment of the place is pretty neat. They allow dogs, and have board games a plenty. Wide open tables, and lots of space. There's a lot to like here. If you're a local and a dog person, there's a great reason to come and have a beer. If you're a tourist and sampling all Portland has to offer, this is probably a pass.

Beer was good, service was friendly, big space and not crowded. If I had a dog with me I would love this place. Lots of extras to pet.

Well, got stuck downtown. And wanted to go to another brewery but it is closed on Mondays. I yelped for another brewery and this was the closes. I'm excited to explore a new brewery. Well new to me anyway. Street parking was not that hard to find but I can see on busy nights it would not be nice. Found out the have a small lot in back. It's rustic inside like a large barn. Tables on one side of the space and the counter on the other. There is a large space in between. Interesting. For big crowds is my guess. They have good beer and their version of pub food. The only service I see them offering is when you order your food at the counter, they'll bring it over when it's ready. This is more like a pubic house where you gather to play games and drink at really large tables. It's easy to talk to people as they are all around you. Don't try to play musical chairs as I find people don't like that game. Even people in my own group of kayakers planning a camping event. Still, I'm not happy with the whole serve yourself type of business style. I guess their patrons feel they don't have to tip and thus it's cheep place for beer.

Awesome beers. Have stepped in a time or two in the past, but never hung out. I would call this a nice hangout for sure. Very cool they allow dogs on the covered patio out back. They even have water bowls and so forth. Wish they had napkin/silverware station outside. A nice water pitcher outside would also go a long way! That being said, super loved the IPAs, best hummus with sliced baguette bread in a huge quantity for $5, turkey sandwich also good. We attempted our hand at "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego." Lots of people playing cards, etc., even invited to a table full to join in. Good vibes all around. Come here, grab Jenga, a beer or pitcher, and make some new friends.

Love this place! huge fan of the chicken bento with mild peanut sauce. Had the Rubin today and it was delicious, with a paring of a Super Dog. I would give a 5th star accept for the staff member smoking a cigarette in the parking lot ,i could smell during my entire meal. I understand it was 10 feet from the patio ,but really ruined the great lunch. Cheers!

Pretty big location. Got some good pizza. Beer is quite average. Nothing really stands out. They do host good beer events. Dr. Parvis

This place was great and it's even greater that they have a huge, covered back patio where you can enjoy boozing with your dog. We really liked Crazy Ludwig and Blue Dog. I ordered the Italian Grinder. Quite a tasty sandwich. I would like to try one of their veggie options whenever I return.

    (5)
  • Matthew K.

Solar powered brews, LARGE dog friendly patio, and parking lot in rear. Grinder sandwich was very tasty, served on sliced bread. Brew and sandwich only ran me 12$ which I think is very fair. This was a great "traveling with dog" find, tasty, inexpensive food, where I could keep an eye on my car which had suit cases in it.

This pub has a kind of cafeteria feeling to it with the servers being somewhat bored looking and uninterested in their jobs. Nothing really good or bad but nothing to bring someone back either.

Delicious food and kick ass booze! Nice big open bar with additional covered back patio seating. They also have bar games!

Stopped here for lunch during the week and enjoyed it. I got a club sandwich and the bread was french bread I believe, so it was pretty hard and I don't think I'd get it again. However it was a sandwich so you can't really mess it up. My husband got the spicy peanut sauce chicken bento and loved it, but it wasn't spicy (for those of you looking for spice!) The environment here is super cool - it's in an old warehouse and has high beam ceilings and big family style tables. There were huge skylights and it was a beautiful day out so it was nice and bright inside. It's just a cool place and it was pretty cheap. There were people just hanging out and typing away on their laptops and it just seems like a relaxing place. I don't have kids, but I can see it being great for them during the day because there are board games and plenty of entertainment. Obviously, dog friendly...great outdoor seating area!

  • Julianna M.

Stopped by while walking around the area. We ordered sandwiches and drank beer (duh). They were tasty and I could see the appeal in a brew pub like this. It was quite quiet for a weekend, but I assume that's also attributed by the fact that it had snowed and a lot of the city was shut down. Anyway, I'd come back and try more.

    (4)
  • Lolo C.

Here for the beer. Sandwiches are ok. I just complained to the female server behind the bar, about the smokers, smoking under cover right at the entrance and she rolled her eyes at me. After this pitcher I'm Leaving!

  • Cheyne M.

A simple place... Love the half-pints of craft brews... no waiters, so the ordering process is walk-up. Good space for groups out back. It's a brewery with a coffee shop atmosphere, as I saw people reading books while sipping beers on a Friday night. Good prices, too, and you can order food, which actually looked pretty decent. Definitely a 3.5 to 4 star place if you enjoy good beer.

I like Lucky Lab, I do, but I don't really like this location's menu as much as I do the other two locations in Multnomah Village and the NW. They don't serve pizza, which is a bummer. I seem to end up here for Meetups or what not. It is central. I know that their beer is good, though I don't drink it much anymore. I do like their salads too. It is spacious and good for groups and games, etc....I like that dogs are aloud as well, though I don't have one.

+1 star because dogs. I sat behind a dog named Oliver. He was really soft. I'm not a huge beer fan, but they do have cider on tap, and the one I tried last time (Rhubarbarian, made with rhubarb) was really good: crisp and a little tart, but not bitter. Th

Stopped here for a bite and some drinks before the comedy show across the street. Overall great beer collection. Particularly liked the IPA and the porter. No wings or burger was a little surprising but sandwiches tasted good all the same. Hummus was awesome. Has a nice big patio with a rustic feel. Overall a good place for a drink or a bite before the show

I've been here many times, but not to this location in some time. I'm writing this as I sit outside in the outdoor seating area on a Saturday night. Overall: The place has really gone downhill in upkeep. It's quite dirty, tables not bussed or cleaned as well the drinks were really disappointing. I'll try to NW location next time, this one is not what I'd hoped. Pros: - great outdoor area for bringing your dogs. - great for staying out of the rain. - food beverages have in the past been decent. Cons: - my wife's beer tasted off. Possibly dirty lines. - glasses were really manky. - my ginger beer was flat, though it had good ginger flavor. - dirty tables - unbiased tables abound. - lots of miscellaneous stove parts, napkins, papers, food on the ground. Some of this to be expected with outdoor seating but combing this with unclean tables just leaves a bad impression.

What would be a great brewery in most cities is unfortunately only average and somewhat forgettable in Portland. The extreme dog friendliness of it Touched home with this dog lover, but most of the patrons were actually not super friendly and didn't have great dog manners. The ambiance is kind of roadside bar in the grit factor and like some of the other reviewers, something about the one beer was off like a bad line or old keg. The summer ale was excellent though. As a non IPA lover, the menu was fairly restricted, like most breweries in Portland it seems, but the ones with sub 50 IBU were also quite good. I'd come back for a dog friendly place to grab drinks, but probably not for the beer alone.

  • Estebano V.

I really want to love this local divey, homey joint. But in a town like Portland (anywhere for that matter), I find it pretty obnoxious and offensive to have a sandwich called "Vegetarian's Nightmare" that seems to be trying pack in as many dead animals as possible.

Our last brewery visit of the day was to Lucky Labrador Brewing...or simply Lucky Lab. This was in my top 3 favorite breweries of the trip. Let me first say I went to two different Lucky Labs. It was HUGE, probably about the size of Hair of the Dog or Alameda but had more of a barn type feel. Needless to say, tons of seating at picnic tables and even more outside. -This place felt like a brewery, lots of merch hanging about the bar, good music playing, and I must say the coasters were my favorite coaster of the trip. I also purchased a glass even though they weren't quite my favorite type of glass. -They had great art work of dogs spread throughout the brewery too which is why I loved it even more. -Now onto the beer...I got a sampler on Day 3. No Pitty Pale Ale I liked a lot, Byron's Pale Ale was okay, Blue Dog Amber not bad, Tim's Beer was good and light, Super Dog IPA was one of the BEST beers of the trip, and lastly Cascadian Dark Ale not bad. On Day 4 we just got pints of Super Dog IPA and man it is tasty. -You can buy a 22oz bottle on site, but no where else in Portland as far as I understand. I highly recommend if you're an IPA person get this beer. -With three locations spread throughout Portland this is a MUST stop for any brewery tour you may go on in Portland ..

I'd never been here before and now that I've done it, I can understand why. I was here today for an event - Dogtoberfest, a fun filled day of music, swag, dog washes and lots of other good stuff benefitting the Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital Blood Bank. I digress. I was hungry and I thought, this is convenient so why not. First impression. Ewww. A divish beer hall, is what it is. I made my way up to the ordering counter, placed my order for a Greek salad, took my number like a good boy & went to my seat. Then I waited, & waited, & waited. So, I went to the counter to see what was amiss. The tickets got out of order and I was told it would be another 10-15 min. Tack that on to 20 min to begin with & what do you have? Sitting in a nasty beer hall waiting over a half hour for a SIDE Greek salad. I didn't want to sit here waiting. I wanted to eat and leave. I was so close to getting my money back and just as I was about to go to the counter to do that, my salad arrived. At this point it didn't even matter how good it was. So looking at this place it's hard to understand why you can't bring your dog inside. It's just gross. With all the other great beer joints in Portland, why would you choose this one? You wouldn't.

Unless you are a dog-owner, like cold temperatures, and simple sandwiches, don't bother. The family-friendly atmosphere is not meant for single, solace-seeking book readers, if you will. However, if you're into dogs, simple sandwiches and loud kids running around then this is your haven.

Great service! Great beer! They have the best deals and I would totally bring a dog here if I had one! If you're visiting from anywhere else you need to come here!

  • Jenny K.

Solid beer selection. Great prices! Good selection of food: sandwiches, curry/rice combos, salads, etc. My favorite part: dog friendly outside seating! And you can buy homemade dog cookies for $0.75. Plenty of parking and seating inside and outside. Inside has a welcoming vibe with photos on the wall and lots of natural light coming. Stop by for some phenomenal handcrafted beers!

Brief stop here last night, one of four Brew-Pubs we tried on a pub-crawl. Tried tastes of three or four of their beers. Looking for those with alcohol content under 6%. I didn't care for any of them I tried so tipped the bartender and we left. Ambiance seemed nice, service was fine and I wouldn't be against going back sometime...but wouldn't be at the top of my list because there are others in the area that I prefer the beer.

amazing place, to drink a beer and chill out,no matter if you go alone or with 10 friends, the feeling is so much welcoming, unpretentious, and the beer with a very good taste, i think the food and specially the beer are both amazing and that is something that sadly is not common this days.

My husband and I just moved to Portland, at this is already one of our favorite places. We love the pizza, and even though he's not a beer drinker, I love the beer and he loves that they usually have one cider on tap. We don't have dogs, but we love being around them, so sitting outside on the porch with all the dogs is a great atmosphere. Especially when it's sunny-- this is a heavenly place to bask in the sun and have a few beers!

  • Mary F.

This is probably my favorite bar in Portland. Great beers, good sandwiches, friendly staff. The inside of the bar feels cozy like a log cabin, paintings and photos of dogs and their owners adorn the walls. The back patio is nice in its rustic simplicity, there are plenty of picnic tables to sit at and tie your dog's leash to while you have a beer or two. A few tables have heaters above them for when it's cold. It's a big space, never too crowded. And it's walking distance from my apartment so my black lab mix dog and I are, in fact, pretty dang lucky. :)

    (5)
  • Nichole S.

This place is a fun environment allows dogs and has games going on. Down side is this place isn't well lighted and the bar tenders seem more on a down to earth however a little to mellow for me. Their menu is more of a deli side and the inside reminds me of an old barn (which I love)! You order at the bar; and pay at the bar.

  • Melissa M.

I ordered an Italian Grinder. It was not a grinder. It's not toasted and cheese isn't melted. They need to change the name of the sandwich. I had their red ale which was ok. The special was barley wine and that was really delicious.

  • Joanna A.

My husband and I stopped here while traveling through. We were looking for a place we could bring our dog and this place rocked! I got the pesto sandwich and my husband got the veggie lover's; both were nothing short of amazing. We share a pitcher of the pale ale and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere is great!

  • Rachel L.

This is a dog lovers paradise. If the photos covering the walls and cups don't tug at your heart strings, bring your own lucky lab to the back porch. I had the 1/2 sand and 1/2 salad and it is more like 3/4 sand and 3/4 salad. Huge portion, fresh greens and the pulled pork was good - nothing amazing but certainly yummy with their Black Lab Stout.

    (4)
  • Brittany H.

The only redeeming factor of this place is that you can bring your dog. Not so fabulous beers and even worse appetizers. With the plethora of beer options in Portland, not sure how this one has made it.

    (2)
  • Kalon P.

The Lucky Lab in SE Portland is a true public house. It is not a bar. It is not a restaurant. It is a place to relax with a beverage, socialize with friends and move at a leisurely pace. The beautiful thing about the Lucky Lab is that they are not turning tables and rushing customers in and out of the place. There is a ton of seating and if you decide to hang out all day they really don't care. The beer is excellent. The food is okay. The service is basic. I take people there when I want to show them how cozy, homie and welcoming Portland can be.

Nice, pleasant atmosphere for lunch. I had the chicken bento (felt adventurous) and was pleasantly surprised. The sauce said it was spicy, but wasn't crazy. The walk-up order style is different from your standard brewery dining area table service, but not in a bad way.

My husband and I were visiting Portland from San Diego, and we happened to find this place via the Yelp app on my phone. We were waiting for the White Owl Social Club down the street to open, and wanted to stop in for a quick drink somewhere while we waited. We made a great choice! The place is very large, with high ceilings and skylights letting in lots of natural light. We walked in and were greeted by the very friendly girl behind the bar, who was very knowledgable about the beer and super personable. We chatted with her for a few minutes before ordering our drinks and sitting down. I ordered a cider and my husband got a beer (if only I could remember the names), and they were both excellent. The seating situation is long picnic tables, which I think is great. Gives the place a community sort of feeling. We didn't order food, but the menu looked pretty good, and we saw other people's food coming out looking pretty tasty. Overall we really enjoyed this place. Good people, great service, and good drinks.

Wow, really good food. I supper suggest if you long for grabbing some food while walking your dog. You just keep him/her on leash and you can order your food. Really great place/people/food.

    (5)
  • Rebecca R.

It is only okay food wise. This location really only has sandwiches (not pizza like the one in the NW) and those are average at best. It would not be my first choice for a meal but since I can bring my dog on the patio when it is nice, I would be okay with going back.

my friends and i enjoyed the beers here- it was our first time and we received great service! bartenders are really knowledgeable and helped me find a beer that i'd like at their bar. prices for their beers are pretty good. great atmosphere, plenty of seating, and overall yummy beers.

It was New Years Eve and my hubby and I were heading to Helium Comedy Club to catch the 10 pm show. We had an hour to kill and we stumbled upon Lucky Labrador Brewing across the street. My husband loved his beer sampler - my favorites I tried of his beer sampler was the Porter & the Winter Ale. Delicious! We shot darts & munched on their excellent peanut butter cookies. I love how laid back the atomsphere is in here. I am obsessed with wood floors & high ceilings. I also love their bulletin boards that are COVERED in dog pictures! I will be back for more....

I have been the luck owner of three labs, so when I saw the name Lucky Labrador Brewing Company how could I not visit for a beer. This is not your typical microbrewery, this is a very family/community oriented place where people come to meet and chat or just sit with a good beer, slice of pie and read. I sat in the corner drinking what I would say is a very good IPA and just watched as a mother and her young child played while at another table a couple was carrying a light conversation on home decorating then a group of friends entered and jumped into a booth to catch up on the day's events. This was not what I was expecting but it was a pleasant surprise. Whether or not you're a dog lover (if you are you have to visit) I would suggest stopping by the Lucky Labrador for a beer and some enjoyable people watching.

Casual environment with above average brews. Food is OK, but next time i will go just to enjoy a pint since their food was more of a extra. Nice outdoor seating and good pups watching :)

It's been a couple years since I've been here and boy has it gone down hill. The place is filthy with not a clean table to be found. It's also in disrepair with vent/duct equipment laying on the ground outside. I got Reggie's Red Ale and it tastes of dirty beer lines. It's such a bummer because this place used to be so great. I gave it two stars because at least we could bring our dog here. I think I'll try the NW location next time. I sure hope it gets cleaned up and back to its former standards!

  • Caleb B.

I've only been the once, but I really enjoyed this place. The patio was such a laid back and unassuming space. Beer was tasty and the Reuben was incredible. Really easy-going demographic here. No pretense. The large, open space inside felt open but could get noisy pretty quick on a busy day. The patio is the real gem here. I'll be back for sure.

  • Cody P.

Great beers with a really friendly, helpful bartender. Affordable samplers so you can try a little of everything. The three cheese meltdown sandwich just might be the best grilled cheese i have ever had. Enormous back patio makes this the perfect place to stop with your pooch before and after the dog park!

  • Laurie H.

They have some good beer choices and a nice bar-food type menu. Atmosphere is not my favorite....pretty basic, nothing particularly unique. You won't be unhappy here at all - but you also won't walk out raving about anything. As part of a pub crawl it's fine.

    (3)
  • Megan L.

So a place where I can find a porch in the shade and chill with my dog...sign me up! They have a delicious selection of beers and the peanut curry and chicken skewer was very good and filling ! I will be back!!

I always come back to this place, on autopilot. Casual, friendly, comfortable. One of my favorite watering holes for reading and getting some words on paper... or for hanging with friends... I even had my birthday here a couple years ago. Big enough for the blogger/journaler to have his space and still be in close, friendly company even during the busiest of hours.

  • Lisa W.

Why on earth would you not have ketchup? I get it if you are a fine dining establishment, but not if you are just an ok pub. I haven't had anything to eat here that I would say stands out. I think they survive by having lots of space for groups and allowing dogs on the patio. Maybe their beer is good. I've never had it. Just get some ketchup though, it's $2 a bottle.

We went here last night because they advertise that they have happy hour. We ended up leaving because I hate false advertising and the overwhelming smell of wet dog was not appetizing.

  • Rob A.

Is this place dog friendly? - Absolutely, huge outdoor patio space!! Here's the problem though: there's no service outside, so if you go alone - be prepared to tie your dog to the table while you go inside to order, get water for the dogs, etc. When I went inside to order, the staff was either mellower than I've ever seen anyone, they didn't real care to be there, or there was a slow gas leak in the place - lots of vacant stares and no asking if they could help. Food is basic, but OK - sandwiches and burgers. Now the beer, the beer was sensational - only thing that saved this place from a one star rating. The service was just so bad, I can't give it more than a two.

    (2)
  • Tina L.

Meh. The pros: If it's raining and you (or a friend) can't bear to leave your dog home, this is one of the few places with a dog-friendly covered patio. So there's that. However...they make only the most cursory effort at having any vegan food (which is their choice, fine. But it's my choice not to give my vegan dollars to establishments that make that choice.). And I really, really wish they served hard liquor and not just beer. So basically, it's a place where you and your dog can sit in dryness and get food and drinks that I, at least, don't actually want.

What makes a lab lucky? A nice home? A loving owner? A bowl full of kibble? Frequent trips to the outdoors? I think that anyone who visits Lucky Lab could potentially consider themselves as fortunate as a pooch who gets all of the above on the regular. This landmark beer hall has been keeping SE Portland fueled with the hoppy goodness for many, many years. They serve up decent beer in a quality space with... a fairly poor food selection. And that's not only my impression - I hear it from plenty of folks. In fact, in my early days in PDX when this was one of the only options I never did spent much time here because, well, when I'm drinking high-octane beers in a beer hall atmosphere I generally want something fried or carbolicious with my meal. Fries, tots, etc are best, and pizza comes a close second. The other Lucky Lab locations have the equation down, serving up, pizza and, at least in the case of the N Killingsworth location, pretty damn decent pizza to go along with the SuperDog. But this original SE location is still good for gathering with a big group of friends and getting loud. Bring your dogs to the back porch area that's covered for those rainy days. Walk the pooch on down to socialize with like minded labs while you commune with Portland's most communal neighborhood denizens. But find a place to grab some grubbins elsewhere, unless a cold turkey sandwich with a side of potato chips sounds appealing to a half-drunk palate.

Big ol' space to meet up with your big ol' group. CHECK. Beer-a-flowin. CHECK. Grub-a-eatin. EHHH. Sorta check. I'm going to have to visit some of their other locations to really have a full opinion on Lucky Lab. As for this location, it was just ok. The bento boxes the other people were ordering didn't look good at all. No one finished their plates. The sandwiches looked decent. I'll have to try one of those next time. I liked the Irish Stout on Nitro I was sippin on. And conversation flowed easily since it wasn't too loud in there. The bathrooms were.... functional. I did have fun reading the walls, though. I made sure nothing bad was said about me. I'd come back here to meet up with a big group but that's about it.

Lucky Lab has been a great place for after work beers alone w/ a book or with friends. It's a very relaxed environment. Walk up to the bar, order your food and beer, get some self serve water, then have a seat. Great for groups. I can't complain about the food selection. It's got the typical brew pub food, which is perfectly fine by me. Basically, drink beer, eat some food/snacks, play some darts, and walk around and be social (if you like). This place doesn't really confine you to just your table... feel free to move around... and get yourself another beer.

The Ruben here is very good and made to perfection. I am a huge cider fan and would like to have seen more on the menu. I did enjoy the dark beer very much. The outdoor patio is neat for mini parties and I truly enjoy that it is covered for your pooch. The only thing I did get the sense was that the staff was a bit snobby and kind of curt both times I have been in here. I would def bring anyone here; just the disclaimer that the staff is very intense.

Outside is nothing special- but the inside is all that matters right? This place is pretty neat, features open space and high ceilings, and delicious beer. The Super Dog IPA is the best IPA I've had in a while. The food menu also looks delicious though I didn't sample anything. Recommended for the IPA alone.

Now this is a vibe that I can just get down with. I only had time for one or two beers, but the laid back vibe had me just sipping on one (that probably wasn't their goal though, ha). I really dug that you could bring your dog here. Now, you can't bring your dog all over the place and it is restricted to being in the back patio area. But, still it just made for a friendly atmosphere. Now, I don't own a dog, but it was cool to see several people just enjoying a beautiful day with their buddy next to them. I really enjoyed the one beer that I had, but I can't say all too much based on just one brew. But, they had about 10 taps available and I liked that you could pick from two sizes for your beer. The counter itself is pretty massive and there is a good amount of space on the inside. There is a sort of rustic-ish feel here. I wish I had more time to spend here when I went, but that's just how it is. However, it's definitely on my list of returns on my next go around.

Is there such a thing as an American beer hall? The way this place is designed makes me think of those large German pubs where everyone sits on long benches with long tables. It's a cavernous space (with free WiFi!), a large beer and sandwich selection, and a relaxing place to just hang out during the day. Doesn't seem to be a "destination" spot and instead has the feel of a very large neighborhood drinking hole.

What's this??? The N.W. Pesto Melt?? I'm in here all the time. At least once a week. I don't know if this one is a relatively new sandwich here. It is tucked over on the left side of the menu- that's the VEGETARIAN side. So OK, yeah. Question answered. I can totally see why I haven't noticed it before. But someone in my party ordered it and it looked awesome. Went up to order it. ME- "So, uhhhhh, this vegetarian sandwich you have... Can you put meat on that sucka for me?" Them- "Of course!" Me- "Please add CORNED BEEF to my VEGETARIAN sandwich, please!" DAMMIT! That's a good sandwich!! A whole new outlook on menus everywhere this experience has given me. ***I will NOTICE the interesting things on the vegetarian side and ADD DELICIOUS SUCCULENT MEATS TO THEM!*** Damn, that was a good sandwich.

One of my all time favorite brewery's in all the land. Lucky Lab features some great beers, and some great food at a low price. A brewery for true beer lovers, and dog lovers alike. I love the open feel of the Lucky Lab, with the large tables, and nice outdoor seating area. One of Portland's finest breweries.

  • Steffy W.

For a chilled and relaxed afternoon, this is the place to be for a nice pint and some pretzels. Good menu served and the staff is totally chillaxed. We sat down in the outdoor seatings with the sunday newspaper and chilled out. Around us were people with boardgames and their newspapers. The chilledness was interspersed with moments of cuteness from the dogs roaming freely around the tables and yelps when the doggies decide to play-fight. Totally cool.

I don't really like beer, but they always have a cider here for me--either apple or pear or both. And they are always excellent. The food's not bad either, though kind of limited.

Lucky Lab is a favorite local brewpub and its enormous space on lower Hawthorne offers plenty of room for all of their fans plus their dogs too. You can order some sandwiches and various munchies to nibble on while you sip one of their many different kinds of local brews. I like pouring over the photographs of labs everywhere. Truly cute.

I have a really hard time understanding where all of the positive reviews come from. Yes, it is nice to be able to bring your dog. But the sandwiches are of just below average quality. Low quality bread, wilted veggies. I left wholly unsatisfied. We actually went out of our way to hit this place on a long drive and were beyond disappointed. My husband's beer was just okay - not stellar (I did not actually drink this time). 99% of the menu is cold sandwiches, then they have a warm bento option. The bento is 80% white rice. I am in shock reading the other stellar reviews. Is it really just the ability to bring your dog that has others singing this place's praises???

    (1)
  • Eric C.

Ok first off - spicy means spicy here. I ordered their Bento and while I am not sure why they call it a bento meal since no box was involved and it is just a bowl of rice with a grilled chicken satay and some sauce over it, but whatever, it was yummy. I choose the spicy peanut sauce and man they did not mess around. They offer home made ginger ale and root beer if you are not drinking and I am pretty certain that they brew at least some of their own beers here as well. In the warmer months I can see myself stopping in here after a hike with my dog since they have a huge area in the back where you can enjoy your food/beer in pooch. They do have heating lamps back there too, but it was just a little too chilly the day I went to give it a go and no one was really there since it was lunch time. A friend mentioned that they have a room that you can rent for meetings as well in case you are ever looking for a place.

I love the idea of this place, but it doesn't really deliver. The beer is WAY hoppy, which I hate; the food is... well... it's just a fucking sandwich. I can make a sandwich at home. My sandwich was good, sure, and it was nice to have my dog not wait in the car while we ate, but it was totally dull. The wife's grilled cheese was yummy though. If I got ahold of this place, it would be more like Zeitgeist in SF used to be - a big, dog-friendly beer garden with an outdoor grill with sausgaes and burgers and about 95% less hippies. Oh yeah, and dog food on the menu too!

  • Brandy S.

As with the NW location, this is a great pub. I mean, it really has the best of all worlds: - No smoking - great bear (my favorite is the Irish Stout, nice and thick) - pretty decent bar food (and plenty of vegi options) - and dogs. I mean dogs! How much better can you get than that? Also, great place to bring a huge crowd of people or just to go alone (although the whole drinking alone thing might not be the wisest).

  • Jan S.

We came here because it was recommended and a local favorite. The place looks like a barn and the bartenders were helpful. We got a sampler and the Reggie's Red was the best. The porter was good as well.

Every time I go to Portland, I ask myself the same question, over and over again: WHY THE HELL DON'T I LIVE IN PORTLAND? I mean, there are several reasons why I still live in (and love) the Bay Area, and these reasons are enough to stay here, at least for now. But still, I find new gems in Portland upon every visit, and they're enough for me to want to throw all those reasons out the damn window. My most recent PDX visit included the discovery of Lucky Lab Brewing Company. Really, if you like beer, food, dogs, and a laid-back atmosphere, then Lucky Lab is just perfect. This particular Lucky Lab boasts a large sunny room, a tasty selection of sandwich-soup-etc. fare, an assortment of board games and cards, several awesome beer choices, and of course, plenty of space for you and your dog (or even without your dog, if you're like me and don't actually have a dog . . . . sigh . . .). It's a perfect place for an afternoon playing cards with friends and also for some casual nightlife (or so I've heard). I came here with my sis and my brother-in-law, and we ate veggie chili and sandwiches and drank beer and asked each other Trivial Pursuit questions and admired the dogs that belonged to the other patrons, and it was just a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Now I just need to move to Portland and get a dog, apparently. Maybe the good folks at Lucky Lab will let me sublet a closet or something. A girl can dream, right?

I love the local feel of this place and since I have become a dog lover, it's great you can bring your pets here! However, I just wasn't that impressed with the food, so that's why it's a 3 in my book, but I'm sure for the beer and dog lovers out there, it's a 5 star! If I actually still lived in Portland, I'm sure this would be one of my hang outs, because a lot of my friends do! It's a great local hangout!!!

It's beer and dudes and dogs and friendly and stuff. If you are goth and allergic and on a diet then this is not your place. If you are chill and possibly into natural remedies and pitchers then you can make a lot of friends. Nice bar.

I absolutely LOVE this place, and so does my husband and his best friend. The pizza is WONDERFUL, and they love the beer! Besides, who can argue with a place that is so dog friendly! We've been to two locations, and although the one on Quimby doesn't serve pizza (waaaa), the food there was very good as well.

You can bring your best dog. and drink beer. now that's eating your cake. Oh! and go Monday. Monday special 7$ pitchers are well worth it. You didn't like that pitcher of totally amazing pale Ale? for less than ten bucks, nobody's gonna blame you for downing it quick and getting another.

Lucky to hang with your pooch here Disclaimer: I'm partial to the Lucky Labrador Brewing Company. I can tell you that they serve great microbrews here and a rocking bento but the truth is, I'd go here even if it sucked. That's because they let you have your dog on the patio, along with many other furry friends. And since my big man is a lab, cocker mix, we love it here. Sammy, my pup, should be the one on the T-shirts here because he's that cute (I warned you that I'd be partial.) The whole vibe of this place is dog friendly, meaning you can be yourself and everyone seems to like you. The food isn't bad with unusual pub fare such bentos and Thai food. They're both good to munch on, but it's the brews that bring the loyal and their four-legged friends back. My only complaint about this place is that they don't let the dogs go inside. Yeah, I know there's health regulations and all that, but what about all the places in New York City that allow them inside? Perhaps we need to have more dog-friendly laws. Gosh knows, our bars and restaurants would all have a better vibe. I think that France could teach the rest of the world a lot. Tip: Bring a jacket even if the weather is getting warmer. Sitting outside for a few hours will chill you down.

I didn't go back consistently throughout the summer. I think I need better beer to be woo'd by a brewpub.

  • Christen M.

I can't have a dog at this point in my life, but I love them and relish any chance to chill with the dawgs. This place, as the name (and several other reviews) implies, is all about the pooches. Mind you, lots of bars and restaurants in Portland are pretty dog-friendly, allowing folks to bring their best friends to hang out and drink beer out of their palms on the back porch*, but this one has a huge outdoor seating area, good food, good beer -- and they are very friendly to cyclists. * I don't actually recommend trying this, kids, because while many dogs enjoy the taste of beer, quite a few of them also have shaky stomachs and just can't hold their booze at all.

  • Adam O.

Awesome place. Board games that you can borrow, friendly and knowledgable (beer-snobbish) staff, and tons of good variety for their beers. They even let us take a little taste of some of their brews before going for the full pint. I first heard about this place in a beerfest in Boonville, CA (home of Anderson Valley Brewing Company). I was lucky enough to have work up in Portland so that I could try it out in person. I had the Rose City Red, cask-style, and it was delicious.

I like this place, always have. It had a strange, or... just simple layout. Actually, it had no real layout. It's an old warehouse of some sort, and it is just kind of shanty. but once again, I like it. Communal tables, order at the bar. And oh, the beer is good!

  • Erin K.

It took me awhile for the Lucky Lab to grow on me because it doesn't have a typical bar feel... it has a huge open floor plan (I usually like places with cozy nooks and crannies) and it is brightly lit (a usually like candles and low lights). BUT, I have gotten over these initial criticisms and come to appreciate the Lab for what it has to offer: a friendly public house atmosphere, a great place for a large group or to play board games, an outdoor patio area where people often bring their adorable doggie friends, and a place for consistently good beer. The only thing that I feel it is lacking in is the food selection (sort of limited), but you can never go wrong with a cheap bowl of peanuts. Yuuuum, peanuts and beer...

  • Sara W.

What a fun place to spend an afternoon. In this rustic, low-key and grand brewery there is plenty of seating (indoor and out, smoking and non-smoking), plenty of friendly dogs, good looking food and delicious beer. It's a bit off the beaten track for visitors, but well worth the walk.

  • Jav V.

I will have to update my review when it's not summer because I only spent 3 minutes inside, ordering my beer and food. I liked the beer selection. I wasn't crazy about the food selection. It's primarily sandwiches and mine was just OK. The bartender was real cool. I love the outside area. Lots of picnic tables in a big space. They allow dogs out there too, which is a big plus for me. I'd go back for some summer drinks for sure. We'll see how I feel in the winter. I'm guessing I'll go elsewhere.

Like Labs? Like beer? Yes? Then this place is for you. The Superdog IPA was indeed super: hoppy, tasty, delightful and totally drinkable. The cider was good stuff. Perfect for a cool autumn evening. The cherry on top? The place is chock full of artwork depicting Labrador Retrievers. I like it!

This bar truly made me head over heels smitten for Portland. This bar combines 3 of my very favorite things... Great beer, great food and yes, dogs! You can grab a Lucky Lab pint and park you and your furry companion down at one of their many "pinic-bench-style" tables and enjoy a good conversation with one of the locals. The outdoor patio is fully enclosed with heaters to fend off some of Portland's infamous weather. A definite plus!

We have held two different client event at two different Lucky Labs in the last two weeks. In a town not know for great service, the experience at both was GREAT! Helpful, attentive, quick. I honestly am not a big fan f the beer but the pizza was surprisingly good. Free wi-fi, cool buildings, big supporters of Dove Lewis and good service. I recommend holding an event there!

I like beer. And I like the beer here. It's pretty yummy. I had the super veggie sandwich too, and that was quite good - even though I'm a meat eater, I felt satisfied. I also didn't feel too terribly under-dressed in my sweats (you know, the cuter kind that you wear after you workout - in my case it was after a soccer game), tennis shoes, and I was all sweaty (I know, it's a lovely thought). But the feeling here was low-key, cool, and friendly. I liked being in this place, and only wish that it was just a little closer to my house. If I moved closer to this place, I think that I'd become a regular. Wait... maybe it's a good thing that I don't live too close to this place - I might have to play soccer 5 times a week and workout 7 days a week just to keep up with the caloric intake. Ugh, that sounds like far too much work... so, never mind - this place is great and I'm great... just where we are.

Lucky Lab is a pleaser I must say. It has surprisingly good Bento; try the chicken and veggie combo with spicy peanut sauce. And of course great beer that comes in many shapes and sizes. AND, of course, you can bring your dog on the outdoor patio and that totally rocks. It is very fun watching all the dogs interact and observing the people that are showing them off :)

Bow wow wow, wait, wrong theme song... ruff ruff, hey scoob... or whichever k-9 reference you prefer, Lucky Lab is one of my favorite places to get a pint in Portland. I don't know if its the massive out door space or the fact that its especially setup for dogs and their owners. I say dogs first because you sometimes see more four legged customers than two legged ones. Whatever the case, the beer is cold and the varieties many, the peanut curry bentos are fabulous and the experience always memorable. Yeah, I always regard dog friendly establishments as tip tops in my book. I wish we had a place like this in SF, but alas... it is a PDX original...

Really good beer, and the bartenders were fun to talk to. We didn't try any food, but the fact they gave me a free brew for my birthday bumps them from a 4.5 start to a 5-star.

  • Rachael J.

Meh. Food is standard tasting bar food, nothing special. Good local beer. Sub-par counter style service. Expect this place to be packed pretty much anytime you go. I would probably give it a higher rating if I had a dog of my own. Been here twice and had a way better time when my friends had a "dog party" here and had plenty of pups to give attention too.

  • Sprinkles G.

This place is my favorite lunchtime quickie. Like the sexual experience it quickly satisfies with the familiar, but an hour later I wish there had been more, and maybe a little better? The sandwiches and salads are deliciously simple, and I hear the beer menu is pretty great too. Personally I'm a cider girl and I have never been disappointed by the Lucky Lab's apple flavored selections. Other noteworthy points are the amazing sky lights and lay out of the restaurant in general. My only small, pointless issue is why all the strange and redundant dog pictures all over the place. Personally, I prefer firemen.

Dog lover haven! We were out and about with our dog Iggy today and it was time to eat. My husband knew of this place and I am glad he did. I am not much for "pub" food so I was leary and pleasantly surprised. I think I had the best combination of a grilled cheese sandwich ever. Super good sourdough bread (I am from San Francisco so I know my sourdough) three cheeses, pepperoncini salsa and mushrooms! You just don't know the combo greatness until that first crunchy bite has zipped over your taste buds. I ate the entire thing in bliss. The husband had the roast beef sandwich to which he said was just ok. So have the grilled cheese and sit outside on the heated patio with your pooch!

The food is nothing to be stoked on, but the beer is top notch. I like the setting of a beer hall (warehouse with picnic tables), as the kids can take up a lot of space and not bother anyone. The outdoor seating is nice as well.

    (4)
  • Adam C.

i really love it there most of the time and other times i wish i were somewhere else. it's great for boardgame nights or hanging out with dogs. the beer is always good (although i had some problems with one of their unfiltered beers there once). if you're getting together with a bunch of people there's plenty of space for you all. but i'd like to go back now to the beer. that's why you go there. cause it's good beer and it's unpretentious. it's what a beer hall should be and i'm sure it'll be around for another 100 years in portland.

    (4)
  • Michelle H.

Good stuff. Good food. Indoor parking for bikes. Good beer selection. While we were there with a hungry group of cyclists, we were offered a glass each of the delicious brew the brewmaster was testing. Zero attitude. I enjoyed it.

  • Andrew F.

I am not to fond of this place. Nearly 10 bucks for a sandwich on hard bread??? I think the draw to this place and the key to it is beer. LIke many smaller dives in Portland, you need to drink alot before ordering food.

    (2)
  • Ryan N.

You will not gain any hipster cred at the Lucky Lab, but this is the perfect venue to show off your fancy fleece coat and/or your favorite sock and sandal combo. In other words, this brewery is about as unpretentious as you can get in this city (which is difficult to pull off on the inner east side). To be honest, the beers are just a step above McMenniman's and the food tastes like it was made by hippies. In fact, I looked back into the kitchen and validated this fear when I saw Mr. Dreads *patchouli-ing up my "The Gobbler" sandwich. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad thing, I just feel like hippies have a certain way of cooking... and by "way of cooking", I mean it is the perfect accompaniment to a tightly packed blunt. This would be great, except for the fact that I was drinking beer. Anyway, I digress. The food is just okay. I should have just said that in the first place. Short and sweet. Aaanyway, one of my first impressions of the Lucky Lab is that it is a great place to bring your kids. This can be a great thing or a very bad thing depending on if you have them and/or if you like them. For me? Not so much. But, I totally love this place (despite my bitching). Lucky lab has a sweet all-season dog friendly porch. Oh! And they crank on huge gas heaters in the winter and have large plastic walls to help keep the heat in, resulting in 365 pooch on porch action. But perhaps their finest touch is the Weekly World News tabloid they post over the urinals. And yes, it is hippie and kid friendly, which is okay, because it is good to take a breather from my usual crowd once in a while. *I apologize for using a patchouli stereotype. I should really be more creative when I am making fun of hippies. But then again, they really won't remember, will they?

Decent beers, great dog friendly patio, and ok food. This original location is still my favorite of their three locations.

    (4)
  • Chris T.

Two separate lines to order makes a good place only reasonable. More room for darts would be helpful too. Lots of seating inside and out is a plus. If you are expecting to be waited on or someone to come check on you, forget it.

    (3)
  • Tommy S.

The beer is drinkable, but not outstanding. The food is pretty average (with the exception of the peanut bento; I've been trying to reverse engineer the sauce now for years), and would definitely benefit from the addition of fries, or at least a better grade of potato chips. Some of the employees are nice enough, others are a little less than personable, never really encountered any out and out rudeness. Interesting enough atmosphere, but feels a bit cavernous. Table service would be nice, but you can wait for somebody to come to your table or you can wait in line at the counter, six one way, half a dozen the other... Overall, the Lucky Lab is in many ways not quite up to Portland standards, and on paper, they might not really deserve the third star, but I'm giving it to 'em for a couple of reasons: First, because this was one of my first hangouts when I moved to town, and for several years I was a Miser Monday regular. Lots of good memories of meeting up with the crew and trading lies. Second, because of the dog-friendly patio. It's sort of a dog park and a bar all rolled into one. I know there are people who don't particularly like dogs, but I don't know how much sympathy I can conjure up for those of them that are allowing this to influence their reviews here. The name of the place, as well as their logo, might've offered them a little clue about the dogs, and they have thousands of other places to go if they don't want to put up with border collies or weird lab/basset mixes. Personally, I think the place, while not necessarily great, still has much to recommend it, especially if you're a dog person.

Excellent place to pass a long, leisurely Sunday afternoon with a pitcher or ten... I love the porter. And the long wooden tables....

    (5)
  • Larry H.

Great for people with dogs, this place's got decent microbrews a step above most Ptown taverns while they've also got some decent grub with their BLT the standout. Decor is wooden, which adds a bit of character I think. Back room is available for reservations. For the non-drinkers, they make their own ginger beer which is not bad to say the least. All in all not a bad place to spend an afternoon with suds, although I think they should install a retractable awning for the outdoor seating since you lose out on the sun. Even if it's in puddle city, beer is always better in the sun.

    (4)
  • Ed M.

I have been a fan of Lucky Lab for many years only if I go to the Hawthorne location. The food is ok and the beers or pretty good. Hawthorne it the one to go to. If you go to the Northwest Portland location not so clean and don't expect much service or a thank you. The Multnomah's pizza is much better the N.W. location and the service is much better too. But why or their pint glasses smaller than the other locations.

    (3)
  • Mary H.

In a world of cloth napkins and fusion cuisine it's nice to find a divey neighborhood joint. The place is messy, the layout weird, and the service is no nonsense, but Lucky Labrador offers delicious classic sandwiches, nice brews, and lots of space to hang with your buds or sit back and read a book. I love their BLT, and the club is huge. It's not fancy or special, but it is chill and fun.

  • Colin S.

It amazes me this place only has 3 1/2 stars. It's a Portland institution. The beer is excellent (Super Dog is my favorite), they allow dogs, and there's plenty of seating unlike a lot of other places. The food is also good, depending on which item you order. (I usually get their vegetarian sandwich or a Thai chicken bento). Truly, you haven't been Portland until you've been to the Lucky Lab :-)

"Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer!" says the pair of .....infants at Lucky Lab Brewing Company. A FIRST: Two mamas out with their babies enjoying a meal and, pounding some brewskis! Ha ha! Man, it was comedy! These mommies were puttin' my lightweight self to shame the way they were pounding their brews. And after a couple of rounds, one of 'em staight-up went to a nearby bench and started breast-feeding: You know this kid is going to be a legendary beer drinker. Besides that interesting occurrence during our visit, Lucky Lab was definitely a cool little brew pub. As usual, a beer sampler was ordered. They had quite a few to choose from, so we had to narrow our choices down, but with what we chose, we had a good variety of brews to imbibe. Since this is a dog friendly joint, I'd love to come back here with my two dogs in tow, so we could take over the place. C'mon, if I'm going to keep up with the Jones' I need to get my dogs to be able to drink atleast half a pint---otherwise those month-year-old babies will just put us to shame! SIDE NOTE: I did like the mural of the Andrew Wyeth painting "Christina's World"--it was altered to include a black labrador and a pint glass in it of course (I tried to snap a photo of it, if you wanna take a gander).

Call me crazy, call me obsessive compulsive, but I just don't like wet, smelly, slobbering dogs hanging around near me while I'm eating. That being said, I'm sure many loyal Lucky Lab lovers will scoff at my opinion. That's fine, you can have this joint all to yourselves. It's just not my mug of beer. In a city full of brew pubs, Lucky Labrador never stands out to me as somewhere I want to hang out. The overall vibe here, along with the musty odor and dingy interior, is just weird. It's not that I don't appreciate their huge selection of beers, and although the beers I've sampled here weren't to my liking, I think they probably have at least one beer for every beer lover in the city. I can even escape from the dogs most of the time, but it's more about the mediocre food here. The food offerings are weak, at best, and the mundane selections they do have just aren't good. I've been here a few times, and there's absolutely no way I would eat here ever again after sampling some of the lackluster dishes the Lucky Lab serves.

How wonderful is the Lab laid back indoor outdoor seating. great beers above average food. Staff could use a few lessons in service though they do a good well priced rice and chicken and there burgers are solid. try the ginger ale you wont be disappointed.

The Lab has, regrettably, the worst vegetarian food in Portland that I've had in the ten years I've lived here. It's as if people who flipping hate vegetarians decided on the menu. The beer is mediocre by Portland standards, and I find the staff generally unpleasant and the tables dirty. It's seriously loud and although the tables are big and you can have big groups, be prepared to shout and say 'HUH?' a lot.

I like that there is a place you can drink beers with your dog. I also like that Lucky Lab makes a collaborative beer every year using hops from people's back yards. That said, I am not a fan of this place. Uni dimensional beers, without much variety in taste and body and overly hopped for style (which I realize makes me in the minority in Portland). There is much better beer in Portland. Limited food menu that consists of sandwiches, salads, and bento. Better food at most brewpubs around. Not worth a visit unless you have been everywhere else and haven't visited Lucky Lab.

This is the place to go to grab a beer with your dog. Dogs are welcome on the porches/ outside dining areas which... is pretty cool. A great place to gather with friends to hang out. Decent beer selection, even a hard cider on tap! Big open hall with wobbly tables, so watch your beer! We split one of their large sandwiches and it was pretty tasty. We also had the hummus which was awful. Couldn't eat it which was disappointing. The bathrooms have a very odd cheese smell. So, to recap... great place to hang with friends and pooches and grab a beer. Eat elsewhere, and hope to minimize your trips to the toilet if you can. :) It's definitely got it's niche.

So while in Portland, we had the pup with us and it was important for us to find somewhere pet friendly to eat. After some yelp searching, I came up with Lucky Lab. The patio is the dog friendly place. Pups are not allowed inside, so it's a bit frustrating to order and such. They had a food menu which the husband could bring outside to me, but there was no beer list to bring outside. Luckily, he knows what I like for drinks and chose a good option without needing to consult with me much. I never actually saw the inside of the place since I was on the patio with the pup, so I really can't speak to the setting. The patio was pretty nice. It has picnic bench style seating for most of it. The servers bring the food out once you order, so at least one person isn't stuck inside waiting for the food the entire time. The beers were pretty good and I imagine if I lived in Portland (or visited more regularly) I'd make this a regular stop with the pup to enjoy a beer on the patio. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich and was pretty underwhelmed. The BBQ sauce was a little bland for me. For the price, the portion was pretty good though. The husband got the Spicy Peanut Curry Bento with chicken. I think I ate half his plate. It was delicious and spicy in just the right kind of way. The dish was fabulous and a great size for the price. If I ever find myself here again, I will definitely be going for the bento! I should have known when half the people on the patio were eating that to have it, but I wanted something new!

The food was very good, and the outside dining worked great with out dog. There are plenty of tables, and they are under cover. Buckets and water are available for the dogs, and they sell dog treats in case you forgot to bring your own. The Hellesaurus Rex was great!

It's all about SuperDog! For someone who grew up with labs in the house, this place makes me nostalgic with all the lab decor. I love super dog IPA! Super hoppy and great any time of year! Though this is a place I definitely don't stray into the more experimental beers because I've been disappointed more often than not. I stick with the basics here and they have always served me well. As far as food, it's a small step above pub food. Nothing to knock your socks off, but I've never had anything bad either. I like the peanut curry bento myself. I think what I love about this location is the space. Definitely bicycle and dog friendly (outdoors only for dogs). Perfect for those rainy Portland days when you don't feel bad about tracking lots of rain inside as it definitely has a common hall feel. The long tables are great for big groups. Great post bike ride stop and somewhere I don't feel awkward rolling up wearing my bike gear. This probably wouldn't be my first choice for dinner, but definitely a place to check out on on a lazy afternoon or as a gathering place for friends.

The funny thing about my visits here is I have never been inside. I love taking our dog here in the afternoon and enjoying some chips and a pint. Next visit I will do a taster.

Felt like false advertising to me. I was not feeling the dog friendly environment Came by with my dog. Sign at the door said to order inside. I walked In with him on the leash to have the bartender tell me he couldn't be inside. I asked if a server could come out then to take my order and he grudges no. I am happy to take my business down the road.

Good place to bring my lab.....good brews and ok food after a really long drive. Its a simple rustic place, without a lot of ambiance, but its cute and homey. I liked the local crowd hanging out there. The back porch/patio is equipped with dog bowls and a water tap for your pooch. We had the porter, ale and the IPA on tap. All the beers were good, but I liked how light the porter was compared to other porters I've sampled. We split a pulled pork sandwich....accompanied by some ridged potato chips.....the sandwich was simple, yet tasty. I think the pork was cooked. In some sort of cola or dr pepper, as it was rather sweet. The BBQ sauce was sweet too, but not a ton of spice or tang. It hit the spot though and went well with my porter. We each had a salad. I had the Caesar, which reeked of anchovies and the croutons ha the salt shaker spill over on top of them. It was edible, but quite salty and fragrant...a bit more than I usually like. He had the Greek salad that had enough olives on it to feed a small town. Not a prob for me as I love olives, but he cannot stand them. He mentioned the dressing was rather plain but the salad was nicely put together. All and all, a nice visit....with tshirts and memories to take home with us.

If you love brewpubs and you are a dog then welcome to Lucky Labrador Brewing Company! You can run around, pant, slurp beer and bark as you please. Well actually, dogs aren't allowed inside. What I find interesting is this concept of a dog friendly brewpub where dogs cannot enter. My dog's a recovering alcoholic so the last thing I'm going to do is take him out for drinks. If I was going to take him though he would probably order the XXX IPA as he is a fan of these. He's a complete hophead and can't do without his share of extra hoppy India Pale Ales. Maybe he would order some kind of stout too, and then after that a red ale of some kind, or, maybe not, simply because I don't have a dog. I am speaking about myself of course, minus the part about being a recovering alcoholic. I don't need to recover from it yet as It is working pretty well for me. I recommend Lucky Labrador Brewing Company but only if you are a human being. It's doggone good! (Insert Cheesy Dog Pun) - Check

Dear sweet Jesus. This place is like a filthy interrogation room. It's filled with hard wooden chairs, uncovered 150 watt bulbs, and desultory hipster servers staring straight through your soul. Once we finally managed to wrangle a table, one of said servers came over, nary a word nor greeting, and cleared the glasses. We thought "hey, maybe he'll come back to wipe down the table since it's covered with beer and old food!" We're such silly gooses! The bathroom had no toilet paper...there was something (shudder) bloody on the floor, and the light was flickering. I'm surprised a goddamned ghost didn't come out of the mirror and strangle me to death just for venturing in. If I hadn't been half in the bag, I might have hosed my shoes off in the yard before walking in the house. I'll give it two stars because the beer is good, and the spicy peanut bento is a nice pub food alternative. But when someone at your table orders a sandwich and they don't get it until you're done with your dinner....meeeeeeeeeh....

Nice laid back atmosphere with plenty of large tables so it's good for group meetings. I'm not much of a beer drinker (shock horror!) but their Ginger Ale is nice, and I love their hummus - lots and lots of garlic, yum. Tip: encourage the rest of your crowd to share the hummus so you don't feel self-conscious about your breath - yeah, it's that good! Great place to just relax and hang out with friends!

This is the first place I went to when I visited Portland over Labor Day weekend, and I can say that it fully lived up to my expectations. I'd never been to Portland until this year, and after watching Portlandia, I couldn't wait to see what was in store for me in this great city. The bartender exceeded my Portland wait staff expectations with his dreadlocks, gigantic beard, and full sleeve tattoos. I walked up to the counter and was greeted with "What." I ordered two beers and some sandwiches for me and my fiancé. We were seated outside on the dog patio, which is less a patio and more of a slab of concrete, ancient picnic tables, poor lighting, and accent graffiti. It was perfect. Everything I ever wanted in a Portland pub. The food wasn't anything to write home about, but it hit the spot. The beer was pretty good. The interior décor was tacky, and it was great. I plan on coming here every single time I'm in Portland (which is hopefully a lot). Keep your expectations low, and you will never be disappointed by Lucky Lab Brew Pub!

Nice public house with at counter ordering system that I am a fan of. I digress but I wish more brewery type establishments would go to a system like this. Simple good menu centering around soup and sandwiches. Excellent beer with good seasonal selections. It would be a five star place if the staff had better hygiene (I know it's Portland but come on) and were interested in talking about the beer they serve. It is a quick and easy place to grab a pint or two.

For a out of townee that wanted to taste Portland's finest, this place hit the mark. I was looking for something to get into, when i found a Couch-Surfing Portland Meet UP @ Lucky Labrador on Hawthorne Blvd. To drink i had, Super Dog and two other ales i don't recall the name. To Eat: Bento: (Chicken Skewer served over a hot bed of basmati rice with your choice of sauce: Spicy Peanut Curry) Went on a Thursday and guess it was game night. After downing two pitchers w/ new couch-surfing friends had an appetite and had their really good bento. I would definitely go there again, if i'm in Portland again.

I admit I originally went to Lucky Lab because of my love for both man's best friend and of course dogs. I visited "The Lab" unfortunately before my understanding of IBU's. So with the selection long and line growing longer I felt compelled to order the most powerful IPA without explanation. This of course backfired as the beer bit back like a rabid dog, my tongue retreating toward the back of my throat with each sip. When a dog pees on the carpet his lesson is sure to be learned and so was mine. Therefore like a swift rap on the nose I made sure the next beer was clearly defined. Inside the decor is sure to please any animal lover; the giant hall is riddled with memories of their beloved furry friends. The space looks frontier, reminding me of the cabins from summer camp. Of course my cabin never offered beer taps that provided purification, if so my 12 year old body may never have complained about poison oak or curfews. They have a large menu with plenty of pub fare to cure your meat or veggie cravings. There's also an outdoor patio where you may relax with your favorite beverages. So if you're looking for a brew pub that can accommodate large groups, furry children, has a good selection of rotating taps and staff who may share less of a personality than your pet, Lucky Lab is perfect for you and Fido.

Two different rating systems at play: A. Food/drink: not so great. I had the Gobbler. It was spicy and yummy on Ciabbata bread for like $6(?). Pretty reasonable. Two of us ate for like $25. But the turkey was just lunchmeat. I would have loved it more had it been actual turkey, like leftover Thanksgiving turkey. Not $2/lb Carl Buddig turkey. I had a Pils which was pretty good, no complaints there. I also sampled from a flight and didn't find any of them to be fantastic or even enough for me to try again. They were all kinda "meh". If I were there again, I don't know what beer I would imbibe. They were all just kinda mediocre for me. B. Atmosphere: amazing! I loved the cafeteria style setup with the big, rustic dining area. I liked the art mural and the bulletin boards of labs (my parents have two, a yellow and a black). I loved the outside seating area. I was a HUGE fan of the atmosphere. We usually gobble our food in like 10 minutes and then bolt but we spent a good 1 1/2-2 hours in LL. Oh, man, and the soundtrack was like a trip down memory lane for those who loved the "alternative" 90s, we heard Pearl Jam, Alanis Morrissette, Prodigy, Alice in Chains, Oasis, Nirvana...everything that I loved from high school. The soundtrack probably kept us there twice as long as we needed to be. We were holding out for Smashing Pumpkins. So...would I go back? Probably. Would I drink there? Probably not. I would probably try other stuff on the menu (the chocolate chip cookie was pretty delish). But I'd guess in a few more experiences, I'd give up and not want to try anymore. If I lived in the area, I'd make a bigger effort to try and love the place (because I want to love it) but I'm not going out of my way to return to Lucky Labrador. So...overall: atmophere: A+, food/drink: D/F.

Disclaimer: I only went for lunch and didn't have beer. I was a little disappointed by the food. I went there for lunch yesterday and ordered their 1/2 sandwich and soup special. Great price! The greek sandwich had hummus, feta, tomato, lettuce, and cucumber on it. Sounds divine, right? I was so excited to try it! But it was really rather flavorless and plain. Disappointing. The soup of the day was Tomato Bisque. It was so spicy I couldn't eat all of it (and I love spicy food). Should Tomato Bisque be spicy? Hm, no. So yeah, I was a bit disappointed. I suppose I'd return to try something else, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Came here during..you guessed it...zwicklemania! They only had one tasting and it wasn't even of a beer--barley wine. it was ok. I wish they could've also provided a beer sample as well. The atmostphere seemed cool and laid back. Lots of pictures of dogs all over the place...duh. I would go back to try the beer--seemed legit.

Usually you try to avoid pubs that are full of dogs. Not so when coming to Lucky Lab Brewing Company. Around here you wont mind if you see a couple of long faces on the patrons. Lucky Labrador Brewing is very much dog friendly, so those dogs you're seeing are actually dogs and not just a metaphor for not-so-pretty people. On the trip to Portland I really thought this place had a good feel and a good selection of both food and drinks. The seat lay out was very open and you can just relax with a board game on a wooden table and sort of get to know complete strangers and mingle with them. That in itself is a big benefit to this huge hallway style sitting area. From one side of the street you could miss this place entirely, In fact, I did. It took a couple of circles to actually see this huge parking area. You'll see a lot of bike riders chiller and folks who bring their dogs here relaxing outside in the patio with a nice beer. Good times. If you're concerned about your drinking ability, you can go for a 1/2 pint as well. So that way your bike ride home won't be so.. um.. crazy. And if you don't mind a little drunk pedaling then go for the pitcher! Why not, they seem to have good deals all around. I tried the Bomb IV or whatever level they were at. Very malty, but that sort of goes without saying. You Portlanders sure like to use and make your beers into malty goodness. Their selection varied greatly, so you can get a wide array of drinks. From your hard ciders to your even harder dark ales. Behind the bars you can see big vats where I'm sure they're working away at making some excellent beers. So that does add to the element in a not-cliche-fake cask like BJ's brewery seems to have in most of their joints. You have your typical pub classics here and they get massive bonus points for one item on the menu in particular. It was called a Vegan's Worse Nightmare. It seemed to have every sort of animal stacked up on it. And for a city that seems to be filled with Vegans, that made me chuckle. If you're in the area, it's always worth it to try. And if you don't go in for the food, there's always the street vendors just a block down. Where else are you going to get drunk and get your urge to get a dog out of your system by playing with someone dog?

  • Jason G.

I'm not a huge beer guy, so I won't comment too much on the beer (though the IPA I had seemed decent), and there isn't really anything to comment on food wise at all. I do like the atmosphere of the joint though. It's pretty comfortable inside, and you can't ever complain too much about an open porch in the summer here in PDX. There is a decent dart area too where everyone else in the bar is safe from your drunk ass errant throws.

Great pizza, lovely variety. Beer is fantastic but the cider is even better! Too bad the location by my house doesn't serve pizza like this location or else I would be there daily. Very casual and relaxed. Can't wait to come back and play darts with the regulars.

I live pretty close to this place now. It's a nice stroll through idyllic Ladd's Addition then onto a less glamorous portion of Hawthorne to get to Lucky Lab. My quest was for some pick-up Scrabble games as are advertised as taking place at LL on Sunday afternoons. I casually sashay my way inside. I've been here once before but it was crazy busy so we "settled" for going to Iorio. In this instance, however, I knew I'd be staying. I gots bingos to drop on suckas. I arrived a little before the meetup time so I gots me ein bier. I look at the menu for the closest thing to a Guinness I can find. Lo and behold, they have an "Irish stout" on nitro. SOLD. That and some pretzels tap my inconsiderable wealth to the tune of $5.75. I stake out a spot outside by a window to set up my laptop while I do some recon on the Scrab sitch. Nothing is immediately presenting itself so I get the headphones on and plug into some speedy wifi, something I'm missing at home. I get some of my downloads done while I wait. Hot Chip serenades me. The BAND, not the fictional hunky male stripper/troubadour of your dreams. The beer is quite nice and the bowl of pretzels ($1) is generous and filling. Minutes pass. Minutes become fives of minutes, then tens. I see no Scrabble. I resign myself to the fact that this is the second time I've shown up for some impromptu action only to get stiffed, the first being weeks back at Michael's Italian Beef (Good grief, I just read this sentence back to myself, and let me assure me, it's not what I think). Granted, there was a big tournament happening today at the same time (so says their website) so maybe it was destined for me to get stood up. It certainly is not LL's fault. And don't blame me. I'm just the fableweaver here. LL has a very weathered, yet classic pub look to it. The main room is very airy and surprisingly light. The bar is long and has a great footrail. The seating is provided by picnic benches. More of the same are on, what looks to be, the 4 season patio. Dog owners bring they mutts here. There are around 20 benches so there's plenty of room for your Anatolian Shepherd. All in all, it was decent. I enjoyed my visit but was not wowwed. I didn't eat anything but pretzels so there's up- or down-ward possibilities there for future food purchases. I'm going with three stars but I won't rule out a fourth, despite your obscene bribes for me to do otherwise. I refuse them out of hand, fictional sir or imaginary madam, whichever the case may be. My stars are not for sale. Good day to you. I SAID 'GOOD DAY'.

We visited Lucky Lab today for the Dogtoberfest Dog Wash. We found a place on the back patio with Merry the Wonder Beagle and I went inside to get a beer. I ordered an IPA and settled back down at the picnic table with my sweetie. The party was just getting started and we were having a great time dog watching. We got hungry and I went back in and ordered a Rustic Reuben. Lucky Labrador is a big ol' beer hall. The building looks like it was once a warehouse and not much has been changed inside except the addition of the huge bar and tables. The place is positively cavernous. Seems like a great place to go with a big group. You order food and drink at two different sides of the bar. They give you a number for the food and it's delivered to your table when it's ready. The sandwich was delicious: thick marbled rye stuffed with a generous amount of corned beef and sauerkraut. It came with a handful of potato chips. I sipped down my second pint while a band played on the stage outside. Dogtoberfest was a good time for all. I'll definitely go back to this place again.

I come here for board game night every Thursday. The beer is not good except for the superdog. The food is not very good except for the Reuben. The Greek salad isn't bad either. So if there weren't board games the rating would be significantly lower, but there are board games and board games rock.

Decent outdoor seating. I can't say I was a fan of either of the beers that I tried, but I'm always a fan of dog-friendly establishments. Vibe was friendly enough that you don't feel like a weirdo striking up conversations with other bar patrons.

I'm a dog owner and brought my five month old lab here so that's my disclaimer. Perhaps I like the pub because they're welcoming to my four legged companion. Call me biased but there's something to be said for a business that taps into such a large demographic of avid dog-lovers. I thought the beer was good. Not knock your socks off but definitely solid. Didn't have any food so I can't comment on the quality of the menu items. Would I come back? Yes. Probably not a spot I'd just drop into on a date but on the way home from work with my dog-definitely.

  • LaSha G.

Pretty chill place to sit back and have a beer. Especially if you're a dog owner. I am not a dog owner, nor am I a dog lover, so the fact that dogs were running around off leashes and crawling under my table, in a place where I'm consuming both beverage and food, was not exactly fun for me, but I took it all in stride and focused on playing with my Yo MTV Raps and Growing Pains trading cards that I picked up from the antique store down the street. We got the sampler and tried 6 of their brews. I liked them all. 4 out of 6 of them tasted fruity -- I'm thinking apricot. Luckily I was digging the flavor, if not that would have sucked. So I can't say a lot for their originality but the quality of the beer was pretty good. Overall, I'm happy we stumbled upon this place, regardless of the inconsiderate dog owners that like to frequent this establishment.

Terrible. The worst service in Portland. And for Portland, that's really saying something. I've been here a couple times to meet up with friends or for small events. After giving it a few tries, I've decided that I will never go here again. I've witnessed rude, obnoxious and pretentious staff here every time. The beer is par and the food is nothing special. There is no reason to ever come back.

The first time we drove up we thought it looked like a old thrift shop. We almost kept driving. I'm glad we didn't. Just a super cool warm feeling place on the inside. Beer was good. I did not try the food just the beer. I try to hit the place when we are on that side of town. I will have to try the food. Cool cool joint.

Good pub feel and decent beer and pizza, not the best place in town, but still good overall experience. Nice to sit outside, but picnic tables outside are not very clean and I think homeless people may you use them at times so I recommend using placemat or napkin under your food.

I don't have a dog. I love dogs. Coming here is like being able to rent some dogs for a couple hours! Patrons are always friendly and don't mind letting me pet and take pictures of their pups, which I greatly appreciate. The beer here is also above-average, especially if you love hoppy ales (there are often three DIFFERENT IPA's on tap). I've visited a couple times and the bartenders are never shy about sharing some samples or talking beer with me, which I greatly appreciate. Good people, salt 'o the earth. Decor reminds me of a German beer garten/beer house with big wooden picnic tables and a spacious interior. Food is pretty decent too, hearty curries. Not really that spicy, but if curry were pub food, this is how it would be prepared. One negative, they seem to close kind of "early" compared to most bars. (11 or 12 I believe)

This place epitomizes the stereotype that Portland servers are rude. I want to love this place. Lots of beer (though I've never been very impressed with any of it) and in my neighborhood should make it great. But the food and beer are just okay, the place feels like a cafeteria, and the service is so SO bad. I won't be going here anymore.

Good beer, good food. This was stop one of our Portland beerventure, and the beer is good. We had the dogbreath pizza, and it def needs more garlic. While the staff wasn't all that friendly, it was still a good visit. The inability to choose a smaller pizza size does suck a little bit.

This place is pretty great and offers a lot in the category of a pretty standard PDX brew pub. * The beer is pretty good with a couple of real standouts including the Super Dog IPA and often whatever specialty they've got rotating through. * Nothing on the menu is over $7 and the food it's self is actually really tasty and fresh. I think I was surprised because the food offerings are limited to Bentos and Sandwiches which seems a little strange for a pub but I don't think you will be disappointed in the sandwiches. (my fav being the Rose Garden-Hummus, Cucumber, Tomato, Lettuce, Feta Cheese & Guacamole on a Ciabatta Bun) * There's lots of indoor space, private/separate rooms and a huge back patio (be sure to check out the ghost signs that can still be seen on the exterior of the building on the patio, pretty cool!) All this makes it a more than perfect place for meetings and get togethers. * Though I'm not a huge fan of dogs or children running around when I'm having a drink, it's nice to know that this is a place I can bring friends who have either or both so we can still all hang out and I can have a pint like the Boozy Aunt Beth that I am. * Several people have likened it to Mcmenamin's but I would venture to say that it's beer is more interesting. There's not really any table service so you'll have to go to the counter where you may or may not have a mildly moody bartender, but I think I don't really mind that so much when I'm just grabbing a pint. If you're looking for a quaint, cozy place to get to know a date a little better, this probably isn't what you're looking for. But if you want to get a good sized group together for decent beer and chatting or planning this is pretty spot on.

Pro: Lot of dogs! Cons: No one really helped you, and the smell of BO was stonger than the food The beer was meh Food ordered was spicy chicken bento, which was odd tasting, the lemonade tasted a tad on the rotten side, how, who know, and the club sandwich bread was stale, and there spicy cream cheese was neither spicy nor cream cheese :/ I think I'll just stick to Fulton pub

Okay food and good beer. It's a great place to go, with a group of friends, to play board games and socialize.

I love this place. Good beer and a great area to play games or meet up with people. Love the openess of the place and all the cute dogs outside. A very eclectic crowd comes here which is awesome for people watching. I definitely think this would be a good place in the summer. Still have yet to eat food here.

Came here for an event. I loved the black lab stout, i believe it was called. Super good. Good atmosphere, the food I saw looked good to. At an average price range, this place rivals, quite evenly, most places of it's kind.

I have been to the lucky lab a number of times. And each experience gets worse. This last time my husband and I came in for food after a few cocktails with friends. It was close so we thought "what the hell". When we came in it was as loud as normal. Which means it's a good thing that they don't play music or it would be intolerable. The high ceiling creates a huge problem for noise. With that in mind it seemed silly that the guy at the counter gave us attitude because we couldn't hear what he was mumbling. We ordered a couple of sandwiches and the hubby asked for a light summery beer. We got a blank stare and "well which beer do you want". After asking for him to give us a recommendation we got "everything is good". I worked a lot of service industry jobs. That means I could give a crap about this place. After telling the guy taking our order that my husband is missing his glasses and can't see the beer chalkboard the server wanders over and pours a beer. Which was actually pretty good. After 20 minutes our food finally came out. The Italian grinder wasn't toasted. And the tuna melt was really watery. Did I mention that we didn't get any napkins. And since you order at a counter that was the bulk of our service. It's a good thing we were wearing jeans. All in all this is the last time I will deal with the holyier than though douche baggerie that is the lucky Labrador brewing co.

I've tried this location twice now - both during lunch time and both times I've been less than pleased with the results. Firstly - the service is slow as molasses. It took 30 minutes for them to bring my 1/2 pulled pork sandwich and tomato bisque to the table. Which I probably could have ignored if the service was even remotely friendly. Getting a smile out of the wait-staff is like pulling teeth. Maybe it's this area of SE or maybe it's just a vibe at certain locations but the "it's cool to be a customer service dick" way of treating folks IS NOT my style. I don't think it's clever or fun. I'm not rude to people who are serving me and spent years in customer service not being rude to others. So yes, it can be done. I'm not asking for super fake nice, but how about friendly? You can be friendly without being fake. Ugh. The thing is - the food and beer is just average here. The concept is fun and a nice addition to the other concept joints scattered around Portland, but I think that's where the enjoyment of this location trips and falls down. I've had their beer once during the Lucky Lab bike ride a few years ago. Meh. Nothing memorable. I've had their pulled pork sandwich twice and while it tastes like pulled pork, it's dry. My DH enjoyed his reuben but said the one at Biddy McGraws was better. Unfortunately I had to be here for a work event. Because it has a nice community room space that you can rent for fairly cheap. I do like the openness and the bright lighting and big old bar, which is why it's getting the two stars it has. But the final straw in my dis-satisfaction came when I was running out to my car parked on the street through the covered dog seating area and some d-bag was wandering in smoking a cigarette. He walked past me - smoking blowing in my face - then tossed the butt down still burning on the sidewalk right in my path. When I returned back to the pub - OF COURSE he was behind the counter dis-interestedly chatting with his fellow co-workers. Yeah - unless for some reason I have to return, I won't.

Great for groups. Actually, this isn't my kind of place at all, but it's a great place to meet in groups. Everyone pays separately, the food is good and almost everything is less than seven bucks! I actually eat their hippie veggie bento. The bento is fine, not authentic but full of other virtues like freshness and healthiness. It's a big warehouse space. They don't force plastic straws on you. Four stars for doing what they do well.

I don't have a dog, but I have a taste for good beer. They have a great assortment of brews, and while some aren't my bag, the tastiness of the Black Lab Stout is something to be reckoned with. Also, oddly enough, their salsa is ridiculously good.

I still don't get it. Lucky Lab is a great spot for beer, dog lovers (dog owners), camaraderie. I take my wife and/or sons whenever in PDX. Have made good friends, having been able to spend a great afternoon on the deck - meeting students or fellow dog owners. MOST polite and appreciative. What still gets me (my preference) is the lack of a REAL, honest to goodness BEEF burgers. Beers and chilis and the menu is AOK - just I need beef. Hope you enjoy - with our without your Lab. T-shirts and hoodies rock!

Wow, this place is like a giant Bingo Hall or a shady Rec Center at a family campground, complete with stark lighting, mismatched and rickety furniture, and tables so unstable you are likely to lose the top 1/5 of each beer if you don't defend against the shifting weight of people leaning on the table surface or bumping the table edge when they stand up. I don't recall what the floor looked like, but wouldn't be surprised if it was just hard-packed dirt. I think I may have even spotted several pinball machines. The bar is in a class of its own. I felt like I was standing in line to buy a ticket for a horse race given the immensity of the big beer board, the impersonality of the bartenders (or beer pourers?...) and the long service line that you stand in when waiting to order. None of this is bad, mind you. It actually helps in creating a relaxed and jovial setting. The place is frickin huge! You could easily hold a corporate dinner here without reservations and not even make a dent in the seating space. The atmosphere is very friendly and unassuming. You can be very loud and all the noise just vanishes into the nether regions of the great hall. The dog paintings are a nice touch. I had a lot of fun. Beer was delish. I didn't order food but others in our party did and, I gotta say, the dishes looked weak. One dish served on a bed of rice made me want to barf just looking at it. The sandwiches looked like they were just pulled out of little Joey's lunchbox having sat in there all morning. Hard to judge stuff having not eaten, so doesn't effect my rating, but just some friendly advice to check out the substance of whats on other people's plates before ordering. A solid A-OK place.

This was a great place to gather with friends who have dogs and have a beer together. My wife and I met some friends on the back patio on a nice summer day and enjoyed a couple local brews. There were water bowls for the dogs and they had a great time hanging out with us in the midst of other dog friends. While we didn't sit on the inside of the brewery, it had great decor with lots of beautiful wood and great paintings. We will definitely return for more.

Mostly good beer, tried their sampler, sampled all the beer, disappointed in their Porter (One of my favorite types of beer) Dog friendly, very good homemade ginger ale. Just come here to drink, do not order any food. Most disappointing food on our trip to Portland-Ordered chicken over rice with mild peanut sauce. Uh, I didn't even know white rice could be served al dente and smelled like a baby's diaper. HENCE-their specialty is beer and not food. Service was not all that either. I ordered 2 samplers, and they were heavy to carry out. Here I am trying to figure out how to carry these 2 wooden trays of beer and the lady at the counter hands me a tray. There were 2 other guys working at the counter couldn't even lend a helping hand. So I ended up carrying out the beer samplers very carefully. 4.5 star beers, 0 star food, 1 star service.

Came back here for my third visit (during OBF weekend, natch), and I like the place more every time I visit. We sat on the outside patio this time, which is Dog Central. It's like all the fun of a dog park, plus great beer. :) We arrived at LL as the fourth brewpub stop of the day, all done via buses, and it was a great wrap-up to the day.

Hair of the dog is the order of the day at this bike and dog friendly bar. A good ol' beer house of wood good for a group of friends and your best friend. They have board and typical bar games but bring your pet instead. If you come at the right time you can see the house's dogs who wander through the outdoor patrons looking for attention; Porter the dog is very patient. Pet, read, drink beer, repeat.

This review is by a non-beer drinker. Great space that's all woody and dog friendly. Very low key almost biker barish feel to the place, wasn't super hungry so I just got a Caesar salad (and felt lame for ordering a salad in a bar but oh well), the dressing was ok and the lettuce was a wee bit white and wilty but damn good croutons, could eat those by the bucketful.

Ok food, their sides could use some work though. Outside seating is dirty, and no one picks up. Great place to bring your dog (obviously). Bartenders are hit or miss. Fun events. Damn good beer.

To me Lucky Lab is like a snobby McMenamins. The food is fine the beer is meh and the space is spartan, cold and lacks character. its a great place to bring a huge group of people, but if you want to grab a drink with a friend or on a date, this place lacks the coziness or intimacy of a neighborhood bar. It can be fun when its full, but not a great place to mingle and its loud as shit, you may as well be at a shitty punk rock concert doing some slam dancing, except the lab is way less fun and the beer is more expensive. bottom line: you can get better beer, atmosphere and food somewhere else.

Love love love the doppelbock. The food could use some work (hummus and french bread... tasty, but odd) but really I could care less. I don't understand the reviews about the bad service either, I have had great service every time, and I'm one of those annoying people that always orders a flight and asks lots of questions. They're knowledgeable and helpful without being condescending, which is not something I can say about all beer establishments. Also, this place isn't packed with hipsters; the customers are a great mix and the vibe is super relaxed and casual, another bonus point.

Bad service, had to wait for 20 minutes just to get a beer. Rude staff that seemed annoyed it was a busy night and seemed very put-out to have to help you. It doesn't even have good beer! It was warm! Food was just ok...One saving grace: There is an employee that looks exactly like Russell Brand, so it was nice to have him deliver the food.

I get it, everyone in Portland loves dogs. Personally I don't. Ironically what started my dislike for dogs was a labrador pushing me into a pool at a very young age. Obviously I didn't drown, but I have vivid memories of sinking to the bottom of a pool. So already the theme of the joint is just sort of silly to me. Sorry folks, I don't think you need to bring your dog everywhere you go. I definitely as a non-dog enthusiast would not go here on a warm night. As it was, on a dark and stormy night we had two large dogs barking at us from the patio as we walked inside. The service was so non-enthusiastic it barely registered a pulse. First off the place was totally dead, just one other person on the inside. Maybe be happy to see me? I might just put some money in your tip jar. I asked the guy for a food recommendation, and it did cause the guy to speak but I could tell he wasn't too happy about it. Also asked him if the ginger ale was non-alcoholic just to confirm and was met by a look of disdain. I ordered the "Vegetarian's Nightmare." Might as well right? The food. Well the sandwich they brought out was not what I ordered. It was their roast beef. I usually would have made them get me the right thing, but I really didn't want to deal with the apathy and roast beef is okay. The reason why I'm not totally going to tank this place is the sandwich was actually pretty damn good. And the ginger ale was pretty good too. Ambiance, is okay I guess. Lots of large tables, probably a good place for groups. It's also one of those joints where you have to order at a counter and bus your own tables. Ghetto... come on Portland what's the deal with that?

I knew this place was special when I walked in and heard Revolver by The Beatles playing. I ordered a full-bodied Black Lab Stout. The bartenders here have ponytails and a laid back "I don't give a fuck about your food" attitude, which I could taste in my mediocre chicken and rice dish. Not to worry, the beer and music more than made up for it.

We were visiting friends in Portland and they brought us here. The pitcher of IPA we had was pretty decent. My boyfriend and I really liked the vibe of this place. It was laid back and a good place to play some darts. We also ate the Greek pizza here and it was awesome!! So if you are looking for some decent brews, pretty amazing pizza, and a laid back place to chill I would definitely recommend this place! We'll be back when we return.

considering that just about any bar in Southeast that has an outside dining area will allow you to bring your dog and sit in their outside area, I'm not entirely sure why this place is so famous for allowing dogs. It would really have been awesome had they allowed dogs inside, but I'm sure there are some type of safety regulation or whatever that prevents that. The beer they have on tap is fairly good, definitely reasonably priced, and the food they serve is also relatively decent. About the food; although you are getting a decent amount for what you pay, I am absolutely not a fan of the potato chips that come with their sandwiches and I wish they offered a different option. As somebody said, the crowd is somewhat eclectic. The furniture is equally eclectic, and you absolutely do not want to leave a full glass of beer on any table as it seems that none of them are flat. I suppose with the way it sets up, it is supposed to be reminiscent of a dog kennel, or at least that's the way it looks to me. I think that I will probably spend more time here in summer, because much as I appreciate having a place around that would let me take my dog, sitting outside and drinking in the cold by myself for the most part isn't a lot of fun. Also the extremely high ceilings are not conducive to a warm environment in the winter. Finally, if you're looking to book a private room, you should be aware that the one that they have here cannot ever close the door because they have a tap that can be manually reset. For most people this is not a problem, but if you're looking for privacy you should not come here with a group.

Very laid back pub with pretty good beer selection. I only say pretty good, because they have mostly ipa's and stouts and I am a wheat beer kind of girl. I had one of the guest beers, a brown ale, it was good. The staff is knowledgeable in the beer catagory, so they can direct you to which of their beers you would like. They do not have traditional bar food. The menu is actually a bit weird. They have several vegetarian sandwiches and carnivore sammies as well. I had the rose garden (ciabatta bread with hummus, feta, cucumber, lettuce and tomato) and I liked it. Sandwiches come with chips. My roommate on the other hand ordered the bento.......not only weird that they serve it but also super gross! The chicken was dry and the ton of spicy curry peanut sauce covering the rice did not have much flavor. I would go again, but just for beers and hang out time.

Thought it was great that we could bring our dog, which was ok but cold. Not sure if they could fully change this. There were some heaters, but they were really high on the walls. The beer was good. Not anything spectacular. It is a self order place, which can kind of make it difficult when you can't bring the dog inside. The atmosphere was friendly.

I've been a regular on Miser Mondays since the beginning of Dog Time. It quickly became the place to find regulars from the NW 14th & Flanders Portland Brewing Company Pub (now the Rogue) and friends form many other micro afficianado zones all over town. Many of the Dogs you see playing outside on Mondays are pups whose canine parents are also present. Because of the long friendships, great beer, relaxed laughter, this is one of the few places I craved returning to when I owned a house in Washington, DC. Every time I was in town I knew I'd find old freinds here (emphasis on OLD...some of the best stroytellers are in their 80s & 90s!) - and be home again. Come early and look for men in Pendleton Plaid and a red-faced vixen with totally white hair - if you want to hang with quality people at the Dog. Mondays only. The Pub is Bike Friendly - with an artisan rack on the North side - crafted by a former Patron. (Where the heck is Merrill Denny anyway? I miss your funnies - come BACK!! Howwwwlllling - over here!) Many campaigns and environmental groups meet in the back room, even the peace Corps cotillion. You can find a long-haired VW-discussion group, or Duck-Hunters and perfectly innocent and uncomplex native oregonian Salmon-fishing addicts also on Mondays. Just ask me and I'll point to your Demographic of choice. We've also got chemists, scientists, renewable energy and HVAC experts, journalists, Carpenters, you name it. It's all about beer & friendship. But you can also find a likeable handyman, too. I bring free seed and tomato starts every Spring. Others bring cookies, or snacks - to hog the Puppy-loyalty. Wish Lab regulars could get an anytime discount, even the microscopic pittance that we get from the Rogue. Love the big Pints - but c'mon, some of us have spent PLENTY here already - and the recent rise in price made me think us humble east-siders may be subsidizing the NW Quimby & Multnomah locations. However, I recently learned that a Solar Water system was installed! YAHOO - this month we drink the first Solar-brewed beer at the Lab. That means we may have Oregon's first Solar-Dog-Wash this year! See you Monday...Cheers!

Not impressed, It's a down to earth beer hall that looks like it'd be fun for a beer and game night with friends (there's plenty of room)...and any place that lets you bring your dog get's an A+ in my book...BUT...I came today and the food was not good. Here's the picture...I got a veggie deluxe sandwich and it was just badly put together. I had to ask for something different (I NEVER do this!). I got a 1/2 salad with that (house) and it was just stiff vegetables that did not look like they were from anywhere within a 1000 mi of here with a dressing that looked and tasted fairly generic. When I returned the sandwitch to get another meal, I decided on the Thai salad, and the only variation on it from the house salad were sesame seeds and an unremarkable dressing. Also, from the time I first ordered, I felt like I was inconveniencing the staff who worked at their own pace. I promise I was smiling and nice!

Not unlike the Lompoc's in their reliability, I dig the sandwiches and the beer. This location is cavernous and played host to a GTG of new parents with various levels of complaining infants. This said, they were very accommodating to the satiation of these infants. I like places that have extra rooms for bigger gatherings (I often needs places like this for work functions), so this Lab fulfilled my needs. I'll be back, probably with work people, but maybe with a crying baby. Cause you'll love that I know.

We were in Portland only for the weekend and went on our own brew tour and Lucky Lab was the first one we stopped at. Had a great tuna sandwich and cup of soup and of course a couple of pints of beer. Had a Crazy Ludwig's Alt and a Quality Rye. The Alt was a bit bitter and the Rye was just right. Nice afternoon.

  • Jeffrey Y.

I should start with a confession, I don't drink, so I can't speak for the quality of the beer. After an evening of sports a group of us stopped by the Lucky Lab for dinner and a few drinks. After a long wait in line where the staff seemed to disappear to God-knows-where for what seemed like a long time I ordered the tempeh bento with sweet pepper sauce. Food was served to half our group almost immediately but it took twenty minutes for the rest of us to get our food. Even though we all ordered at the same time we placed our orders individually so I didn't expect all the food to come at once but a twenty minute difference is probably too long. You would think that tempeh and rice with a sauce would be fool-proof but apparently not. First, compared to the servings given to the carnivores there was a stingy amount of tempeh, less than half the amount of meat given in the same dish. Lame! Second, the sweet pepper sauce could be more accurately described as sweet pepper brine, it was so salty that I didn't use it after an initial taste. On the positive side the atmosphere is nice and they're dog friendly. Too bad that the outdoor area is totally taken over by smokers. I think my first experience will be my last. Sorry Lucky Lab, I so wanted to love you but I just can't bring myself to make that claim. My pups and I will go elsewhere in the future.

I think the fact that the Lucky Lab seems to do such good business, and has such a good following, is a testament to the fact that many Portlanders love their dogs even more than they love their beer. If you give them a place that openly welcomes, and celebrates their 4-legged companions, you can go ahead and serve sub-par beer in a boring, bland environment, with less than stellar staff, at least some of which are not at all knowledgeable about beer. I've sampled Lucky Lab beers at a number of beer fests - and never have I found even one that really grabbed me, which is a good part of the reason I don't frequent the Lucky Lab. But last Friday our crew rolled in here, so I asked the bartender which was their hoppiest brew - he suggested the Triple Threat IPA. It was hoppy, I'll give them that. But it was seriously poor beer from the first to the last metallic, off tasting sip. Ugh - it was almost like asking someone who hates IPAs to think of everything they don't like about the style, then trying to perfectly capture that in a single pint. No complexity, weak mouthfeel, this was simply not good. One of our party ordered a pint of their "Pale Ale" and was given something only marginally lighter in shade than a Black Butte porter. "This is the pale ale?"...Yep, they assure us. Either someone pulled the wrong tap and didn't want to admit it or the brewer is seriously jacked up...the latter wouldn't shock me, but I mean come on, making not very good beers is one thing...calling a deep mahogany brown brew a "pale ale", when it lacks the crispness, clarity, and aroma typically found in a pale - I doubt even a sub-par brewer could get away with that for long in a city like Portland. I sipped a few more beers from a buddy's sampler, most weren't horrible, none were outstanding. I don't see myself returning to figure out which was which. I know dog-lovers need places that accommodate them and their furry pals, but I've gotta believe there are better spots out there for them than the Lucky Lab. It's just not that good. Lest you think I'm being harsh, read some of the reviews closely: even many of those that rate it highly cite the substandard service, beer, and food (all I had was $1 hard pretzels, so I don't have much to add in that department). I think people just overlook all the shortcomings because it's so dog-friendly.

  • Ari K.

Very disappointed for what could have been a super awesome experience. If I were to simply tally up the attributes of the place without experiencing it I would have easily given Lucky Lab 5 stars: Sandwiches - 5 stars, Beer - 5 stars, Allows dogs - 5 stars. However, three great ingredients don't always make for a good recipe apparently. The sandwich was decent, however, it costs over 7 dollars for what I could have easily made at home. If they had simply thrown some fries on the side of that sandwich I would have been a happy eater. The beer was beer, it was also spendy and the selection was limited. The dog thing is pretty cool, if I ever choose to go back it will be because they let your dogs in the outside eating area. Finally, it took over a half hour for our food to be delivered, which I remind you were sandwiches, which should take 15 min. If you go, go for your dog.

  • Brian N.

I love micro-brews and live on IPAs, but I can't find a single beer her that I like. Some beers have that nasty aftertaste and this is one of them. It also bothers me that they don't have fries. Common man..."good beer", sandwich and CHIPS???? It's cool that pets are allowed in the outside area.

I've had Lucky Lab beer a few times but had never been to this location. I have always been pretty happy with what I've tried, nothing has been so awful that I had to pour it out or leave a half full beer. Which is always a plus... This location is huge, and if your on the wrong side of the street it's really easy to miss the door. But on the other side of the building is a huge parking lot with a lot of outside seating. The place was pretty busy when I stopped in but you couldn't tell because it's huge. The place does smell like wet dog... but maybe that's part of the charm.

As Brie B. stated, "this place is for the dogs." Sure enough, IT IS! Lucky Lab. you have been a friend of Pfieffer the mutt, Monty the Shi Tzu, and mine since I came to this grand city. Your beers rock, your food less than memorable, staff is nice, and the patio is the best! This was the first pub I knew of where it was not only ok to bring your dogs, but [seemingly] expected! Things I would add to make you SIX stars: better food and a dart board outside! Lucky lab, you are for the dogs; the TOP-DOGS!

This isn't my first choice of breweries when I head out in Portland but they do make some good beers and the brewery itself is a nice spot to drink if you enjoy Man's Best Friend and bowls of peanuts. The Hawthorne locale is nice for the fact it isn't in the trendy district so the parking is better and the vibe is relaxed. Seating is like true beer hall style with long benches and tables throughout. I would say it's best for groups and meetings because there is always space enough for more. Maybe I haven't mentioned the beer enough, there's probably a reason.

The Lucky Lab is one of those places I like to take people on their first visit to Portland. The beer is SO GOOD! They have a pretty good selection, although it may take a few pints to find your perfect fit. The outdoor seating is fun in the back, and it's always great to see all the dogs running around. I grew up with several dogs but I can't have one now, so whenever I need to get my fix I go to the Lucky Lab. As far as the food goes, meh... I only eat there when I'm Starving! Or drunk. Or someone else is buying. Their toasted sandwiches are so toasted they cut the roof of my mouth. This is a place to go to if you like good beer and dogs. If you don't like those I'm sorry but I don't know of any wine and cat bars.

The Lucky Lab is a no frills brewery offering great beers, ambiance that brought me back to Germany and a secret gem on the menu. If you like curry at all you must order the Bento Box. We had it with grilled, skewers of Tempeh. The curry sauce is questionably the best I ever had, and I've had a lot of curry! They serve it with brown rice and that's about it - one word, lovely! I will be back.

This place was great! It seems that not everyone had the shining experience I had, but thats ok. I got the Super Dog beer which is an IPA, even though its not in the name, and it was really good. They had 3 IPA's on tap - which I don't get to see often and made me very happy - and a ton of cheap sandwiches. I got a 20 oz. pint and a delicious BLT for $10. I was pretty stoked. Granted, they put in my order in as a completely different sandwich and I had to wait a few extra minutes but they were nice enough and it was late on a Tuesday night and I didn't really care. I got to hang out with my boyfriend's (well-behaved, thank god) dog while drinking beer and eating my food outside and I met a really nice German exchange student who I ended up chatting with the whole time I was there! I don't know what this place gets like when they're busy, but I had an fun late night experience here.

Lucky Labrador hosted a festive start and after party for the "Worst Day of the Year Ride." Killer beer, food, and atmosphere. I'll be back when I can drink a little more without having to worry about swerving into traffic on the 9 mile ride home! Loved the Bike Route Rye with a cake donut (the donut was the quickest grub to grab until I got some chili). Donuts and Beer? Hmmmm......

This place is great for lunch and offers something for both meat and non meat lovers. I always have three cheeze meltdown with a cold beer. Today I had black lab on nitro. One of the best things about this place is they always have something on nitro. Another must visit place for an out of town drinker of great brew. Enjoy!

Beer!! Fresh, locally brewed beer!! Pure yumminess!! This is what I consider a beer hall. From the outside, the place looks very unassuming but once you venture further into the back, it opens up into a vast warehouse-like beer hall complete with the wonderful aromas of fried food and hoppy beer. The place is mobbed full of people and loud as freakin hell. The bar is probably one of the longest bars I've ever seen, stretching from one end of the hall to the other. There's no definite place for a line but again, it's so long, who needs one? One thing to note is that there are no bar stools or chairs. It's standing room only at the bar. Weird. The beer is very solid here. They have a huge handcrafted beer selection always on tap that could make a lot of other breweries quiver in shame. I love stouts and I particularly enjoyed their black lab stout. Nice deep flavor with a smooth finish. Mmmmm. Me likes. Leave your make-up and cologne at home. There's nuthin fancy here. This is a place to be, not to be seen. Just great beer, cheap food, a relaxing atmostphere and lots of cute doggies outside. Cheers!

I go here for game night with around 5-7 other friends, and it's a great setup for playing board games. I know that probably not high on most people's priority list when they go to a brewery, but it's worth mentioning. Good outdoor seating where dogs are welcomed. The staff are nice and laid back. One complaint is that they don't ask if you're done with your food before they take it away. I am the type of person that scrapes my dish clean or takes a doggy bag, but they don't seem to get that. Good beer, good gaucamole, good pizza (can't eat cheese, and too cheap to order a whole vegan pizza, but everyone says it's good). I ordered something with hummus there once too. Do they have a hummus plate? If so, that's what it was, and I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it was good. Their chips are good too. And they have a dart board, which I am sure people have mentioned

JS: On our Friday microbrew bar tour we made our 2nd stop Lucky Labrador. I was able to do plenty of people watching, but not as much dog watching as I'd hoped. The Blue Dog pale ale was tasty, and the setting was nice. If I lived here, I imagine it would serve as a convenient meet up place for a group of friends. Also, the taps were pretty neat-- customized metal handles. --JR-- When we arrived at Lucky Labrador, I liked it immediately. The rafters are exposed and the sound from all the conversations bounces around the room creating a great din. Clearly a bar that is all about having a great drink with great conversation. To make it even easier to focus on the people you are with, NO TV! A fun place.

What's not to like? There is a giant patio for sitting and enjoying the beer with you canine friends. There were dogs everywhere even a St. Bernard! The beer was again great. I was there on a sunday night and they do close early so make sure you get there kind of early. I didn't get to try the food since it was closing early but I have heard a lot of good things about it. This place was a lot of fun

Went to Lucky Lab with my husband on a recent trip to Portland, my favorite city, (We also went to Seattle & Vancouver, BC) and we make it our business to find local microbrews that stand up to our Midwestern favorites (like Bell's, MI & Three Flyod's, IN). On our trip I discovered Ninkasi IPA (Eugene, OR) and Firsestone IPA (Paso Robles, CA) and NOTHING held a candle to them, but Lucky Lab's IPA was nice. My husband tried their stout and whatever was on their Nitro tap and he enjoyed both. I wouldn't say the beer was impressive, but it was drinkable and better than the mainstream crap. I could drink it often enough. What was better was the chill atmosphere. We loved that it was casual and that you could really feel comfortable to sit at a nice wooden table, drink, talk, play cards, you get the idea and just let loose. We noticed that they also have an outdoor patio, but on our visit the heat wave had subsided and it was a bit chilly, so we stayed indoors. Now I wonder if it gets crazy packed or overly crowded--that just doesn't seem very Portland to me, but I could be wrong. On our visit we also met Governor (of Oregon) Ted K. 'cause he stopped in after a charity event to get a drink! After my husband asked his bodyguards if he was the mayor (they looked slightly offended), he recovered by making a Blago/Daley joke about our Chicago/IL politics which they seemed to appreciate. In any case, go to Lucky Labrador to relax, sample some good beer and maybe meet a politician with your friends. I'll gladly go back on a future visit to the Pac NW.

We went here after catching a great comedy show at Helium (right across the street) so we were in great spirits and hungry! So disappointed, they were out of many of the menu items, no table service and bad service. When we got our food my brother in law complained to the staff about a large piece of gristle that he found in his sandwich, gross. The staff basically said sorry but that is how our food is and offered nothing in exchange. They did not take it off our bill or even comp a round... Only good thing about this place is you can bring your dog with you.

Their beers were OK, but their bartender was a total mindless pothead. I literally stood at the bar staring at him for 4 minutes before he even acknowledged my presence. Even then, all I got was a look with no explanation or greeting. Weird...I'd give them one more try though.

Cool concept. The owners are clearly Lab lovers which is important because I have one of the greatest lab's in history! The thing is, when i visited this place it was dead empty so I really couldn't experience everything the place had to offer, which is why it gets 4 and not 5. The beer selection was extensive as well.

I tried to like this place. I really wanted to... but I just couldn't. I was standing at the counter, looking totally ready to order (cause I was) and I watched 2 employees stand around doing nothing for a good 5 minutes before one of them sighed and came to take my order. Most.Disinterested.Order-taker.EVER. I wouldn't call him rude, but he certainly wasn't polite. I'm not sure you can call a dish "bento" when it's a bowl of rice with a (borderline undercooked) chicken skewer put on top of it, drowned in the most mediocre peanut sauce I've ever tasted. Let's see how wikipdia defines Bento: "A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish." Ok, so it got the rice and meat... but I got no side dish. Le sigh. My boyfriend club sandwich was fine, but I'd be pretty scared of a place that managed to mess up a sandwich. I ate most of his potato chips and left hungry cause the chicken was sketchy and the sauce was no good.

As a Dart Bar, they leave a lot to be desired. There are only two boards, and they are cordoned off in their own space at the front of the establishment. This is both nice (as it cuts down on people walking around you) and isolating (there is no scenery besides what you provide). The boards themselves are generally in good shape -- I don't think they get much play. The chalk boards are annoying and not well placed for good score keeping. The two lanes are spacious enough to play, but the way it's setup it's almost impossible to spectate. The food is quality, and so is the beer, but you're not going to get off cheap (at least not by dart bar standards). I have gone here on my own to throw darts -- and besides the occasional looky-loo I was all alone. If you want to get a game going bring your posse with you.

You know when servers or bartenders are rude so you try to almost kill them with kindness? But then if they don't reciprocate you just get ticked? And at the same time, if they are good looking it almost makes you sad because you want their personality to match their looks? Well, that was my experience at Lucky Labrador. Stunningly hot server, other good looking folks working there, but all super rude and pissy. I have only been there once and I will probably go back but am not expecting any type of pleasant service there ever again. I was there with a large group of people that had several tables. That is the really great thing about lucky labrador, it is big inside with a lot of tables. I saw several different large groups of people hanging around for several hours. There is also a small area for darts and a medium sized enclosed room that is perfect for small corporate meetings or groups. I heard that they different events there, someone mentioned on Saturdays they have a 'Go' tournament. Outside there are a couple dozen benches where lots of folks were gathering with their dogs. The food was not that great to be honest. I got the Rose Garden which had hummus, tomato, lettuce, feta, and cucumber on it served on a Rosemary Role. All of that adds up to a delicious sounding sandwich. Delicious sounding is the key phrase....eh, it actually didn't taste that great, I didn't finish my other half. I can't remember what my husband got but he thought it was just OK. I had ordered a water, not knowing that it was self serve. When I asked them about it they were so rude. My husband had the Lucky Lab Root Beer and he liked it but didn't think it was great or anything. Overall I think Lucky Lab is a perfect place to go with a group of friends and they are cool with folks hanging out for several hours at a time but don't expect much from the servers or from the food. I guess I would try something else from there and see if I had better luck but ehhh, it was not that great. Fun place though and everyone seemed to have fun.

After reading some of the other reviews, I was really expecting terrible service and rude waitstaff...but that wasn't my experience at the Lucky Lab. Although, all I did was order a beer, twice-would have been pretty sad if they had managed to screw that up! I liked it alot, I love the idea of the dog friendly bar, and the heated covered patio was very nice and fairly comfortable. Beer was good too, had the Reggie Red, or something like that-would definitley recommend it. Didn't try any food, but the food that I saw looked rather blah...I think the potato chips were Ruffles, pretty unoriginal. Oh, and for some strange reason, the inside smells like Top Ramen...weird, but not necessarily bad. Give it a try, and take your dog!

This place has excellent beer, pretty good food, a lot of board games and the best dart's setup I've seen next to the triple nickle. An absolute must visit, and one of the better places to take a huge group of people. They have endless seating, in a large airy setting.

Lucky Lab is one of my Top 3 great 'ol standbys for lunch or dinner. The place is different than most. It's very rustic, casual and relaxed. It's a great place to hang out and chat, play board games & cards, and - if you sit outside, your dog can hang out with you! They also don't have a fryer - Yey! So the place doesn't stink like a greasy bar. They serve yummy healthy, tasty, fresh sandwiches, soups and salads. They have bento, but I'm not a bento fan. For basic snacks they have a hummus plate, peanuts-in-the shell and chips. I usually get the half-sandwich and salad combo. The beer is very good - my favorite is the Black Lab Stout - rich and creamy. They didn't use to have dessert so I always brought my own, but now they make a variety of cookies which suffice for my need of chocolate with my beer!

Totes yum. Lovely location, lovely doggies, lovely people. The atmoshpere is outdoorsy and comforting when you sit on the patio. They have dark-ass beer, though I agree it is not the greatest beer to have ever been bestowed upon my taste buds. Just get the dark shit; the darker the better. The sandwiches are yum in the tum, but nothing to have dreams about. All in all it's fun for pooch lovers to throw theirs into the mix while socializing in public. Sometimes I catch eyes with Bode and I see the same look that I used to give my daddy when he would take me to the post office for Bring Your Son to Work Days. Ha, aren't I psychotic. Enjoy, my friends.

Beer is good but the overall spot is a dump. I had my pint on the patio and the smokers about chased me out despite the no smoking signs. Then I went to use the restrooms and they reeked of urine, so strong that I wondered if they had been cleaned this month. I won't be back.

Ok, so my boyfriend and I decided to drive up to Portland for a new year getaway. So naturally our dog, Racer, whom we adopted in November, would be joining us. This was truly an adventure. Just imagine driving up in a small VW Jetta, with a bike tire ducted taped to the seats to make a blockage between us and the dog, driving for 2 days to get to a very rainy city. My bf was in need of a beer, I was in need of some hot water, and the dog needed to be with us - he has a little separation anxiety. I'm so glad we found this place. We were able to bring Racer into it's covered area outside, feed him, drink our beverages and just chill with some friends. I'm not a beer drinker (being allergic to gluten and all) therefore a better wine selection would have been nice. Cheers to doggy bars!

    * Awesome BLT and Corn Chowder * Yummy Chicken Stick Bento (ask with SPICY sauce) * Kids Cheese sandwich is only $3.75 and it comes with potato chips. It made me feel like a big kid....20 something years old big... * MMMMMM Beerrrrr.... * The downside is when they are busy, it will take 20-30 minutes for sandwiches and the counter person will always push the bento to you instead of the sandwich. So it might be wise to come there not during lunch rush hour.

Oh the Lucky Lab! So many reasons why this place is the bomb.org - Well they've got great beer and I especially love their stout. They also have really good sandwiches and just plain snack food like hummus and bread. You're welcome (or perhaps encouraged?) to bring your dogs to the outdoor patio and well that's a huge bonus for me because I love dogs. I like to pet them they're freaking cute. My last and favorite reason for going to Lucky Lab, which probably won't matter to 99% of the people who read this, is that they host TWO local Go clubs! If you don't know what Go is, it's a really dorky and amazing board game. So, two days a week, I can head over to the Lucky Lab to drink good beer, eat good food, pet cute dogs, and play Go with local Portland Go dorks! YES!

Spacious and airy. Decent food and good beer; can't beat that. Enjoy the outdoor seating and indoor for rainy days. People posting pictures of their dogs give validity to the establishment.

This place has Portland written all over it. The beers constantly change, they have a huge selection of their own beer, and it's got a nice community vibe to the place. I regularly stop by this joint. The bento bowl is amazing. Even if you're not vegetarian, I'd recommend the veggie bowl, you get more food and it tastes better than the chicken. Would love to see a pool table in here, the darts are free but the layout is really awkward. THE BEER IS DOPE.

Beer was okay. Outside seating was pretty nice. But my table was definitely hurried to finish its drinks and get out. Not a great thing and it wasn't even 11pm yet. There two very nice good looking gentes playing darts in front. That adds an additional star to the mediocre experience. I am vain. :)

I hadn't been to the original Lucky Lab for many years but I had occasion to spend the better part of a Saturday afternoon there and it's better than I remembered. The spacious interior was surprisingly full of people for a rare sunny day in a Portland February. But the room is brightly lit by sizable skylights so it was almost as good as being outside. The Lab fills the duty of community center, in the best possible way. Several tables were occupied by people engrossed in serious games of Go; other tables were obviously working meetings of community action committees and others still were extended families and friends and kids of friends. The beers, which I had remembered being somewhat bland, were actually tasty. I particularly liked their new Solar Flare IPA, made partly with solar-heated water. Sure, it's a gimmick but one I can get behind. There's one thing about they way they pour beer at Lucky Lab - 80 percent of the time they leave no head on the beer but fill it to the rim. I suppose it would be a bargain if you stood at the bar to drink it. But if you're carrying a pitcher back to a table full of thirsty friends, probably half a pint hits the battered wood floors before you get to a waiting glass. That, my friends, is what we call alcohol abuse. I used to scarf their spicy peanut chicken bento on a weekly basis, but yesterday I went for a classic Italian grinder. And although one could quibble about the claim to classic-ness (grated parmesan on a grinder?), it was a delicious sandwich, with fresh, chewy sliced artisan bread and a variety of salamis. It's all about the bread. We tried one of their newer offerings, a house brewed root beer for those days -- or lifetimes -- when another beer seems like a bad idea. It was a little sweet (this after an IPA, of course) but full of fresh flavor you're just not going to get from a bottle of Barq's. I have to knock a star off for counter-only service that ranged from indifferent to surly and a bathroom that would have been more at home in a punk rock club. But the Lab is a true Portland original, one of those places that makes the city what it is.

OK after 50 miles of Bike riding in the big City (Stop N Go like riding a century on the open road) I go in here and freakin Chug a pitch or two Pig Out on buffalo wings then call a cab to bring me home.

If you're not there for the beer I don't know what the attraction is. Food is average at best. It could use something like a signature burger or sandwich. Always crowded though so they must have awesome beer, unfortunately I'm not a beer drinker.

If you are in the Hawthorne neighborhood and your jeans aren't cutting off circulation, head over to the Lab for a bite of the bento bowl and a pint or two of Super Dog, the only beer worth racking your checking account for. As far as the Portland craft domestic scene is concerned this place is all you could ask for, minus great beer. I love to hang on the back patio with my sister's dog Nali, visit with friends and play a game or two of darts inside. In the summer you really can't ask for a better place to relax as it is close to downtown while still on the East side. They are extremely biker friendly, but then again what semi-decent place in P-town isn't? 4 for the atmosphere 2 for the beer

Excellent brewery! We were down in Portland recently to celebrate a belated birthday for me. We hit the OMSI and went to Departure. The other goal was to hit three new breweries that we haven't been to before and Lucky Labrador was one! The beer was very tasty, the tap room was nice and large, plenty of room to relax! I got the Super IPA which was very good! Steve got another kind of beer which I don't entirely recall what it was but it had a great flavor to it as well! Nice brewery!

Great service!! Visiting from San Diego and we were looking for a dog-friendly location where we could get a beer and some food. The beer and food was pretty good. The sandwiches and chips were what we were looking for and definitely hit the spot. We sat in the spacious and comfortable covered outdoor patio, where our pampered San Diego heads were gently warmed by overhead heating lamps. The lamps went out halfway thru our stay, but a passing notice to the bartender left us informed that they were on an environmentally-friendly timer, and if at any moment they went out, we only had to ask and they would come to life again. My buddy spilled a beer. I went inside to ask for a bar rag and was given one. Upon returning it, the bartender asked if a lot of beer had been spilled, as he would be happy to refill it for us without charge. My heart really smiled at the great customer service we were provided. I know it may sound like just common human decency, but that is pretty hard to come by these days. Lucky Lab seems to have retained it, and it was delightful. I am a happy camper and my dog was super-comfortable while we were there. Three cheers to you, Lucky Lab. We will be back.

So, In case you haven't noticed Portland is a DOG town and I don't mean the "Fashion Donts" that are walking among us. heheh jk. NO I mean the 4 legged Dogs. Well, This place has it all and a bag a chips literally Girls with Pit Bulls dogs Dudes with Small buttercup dogs Kids petting Dogs Nice people with Rescue Dogs People struggling with untrained Dogs Furry dogs Short hair Rat Terrier Dogs (my dog) Dogs with "Thunder Shirts" on Young Dogs AKA Puppy Dogs And in the middle of all this RUFF stuff there is pretty tasty Local Beer, Sandwiches and Chicken Bento. By no means is this the best dog friendly spot in Portland, but it's one of the first places to welcome dogs in Portland. So to that I say, Thank You and I will continue to support Lucky Lab and their welcoming patio..yes with H20 for your Doggie.

  • Miel H.

Dog friendly seems like more than a misnomer. Dogs are the real patrons while their attending humans sort of get food and drinks to humor themselves through all the hiney sniffing. BUT, if you want to get inside, you will be out of the dog heavy petting zone. Extremely large inside, so all you RPG-ers looking for a safe space to hang out after a session at Guardian Games (THE spot for single women to pick up cute, super nerdy, intelligent, obsessive men) will be happy. Atmosphere is not really their thing, but the wait staff smiles and was helpful. Nice selection of beers and big sammies, but doesn't really seem to cater heavily to the "oh, sorry, I don't eat *fill in the blank*" tweakers, you know, like me. I would go back with a large group.

  • Christina P.

I was really excited to come here as I love both dogs and beer, however I would have to classify the beer as just being average. They are located in an area that is densely packed with other breweries so the competition is stiff, but they are just pedestrian. I would also say that their prices are a bit steep for their tasters. I did like chill atmosphere and dog-centric decor. The food was actually very good. Apparently, Portlandia filmed there the week after I was there so that was a bummer. Worth checking out and getting a bite to eat!

Came here about 30 minutes before close with some friends looking for local beer. The bartender was very knowledgeable and guided us through the selections. I ended up getting a local IPA which was very good. They kindly let us have two beers right at close so it was a good experience. Cost wasn't too bad, but we were the only 4 people in the place so it was a bit of a ghost town. Reasonable prices and great selection, i would definitely return,

This is always a fun place to visit. Great variety of beers on tap and the pizza is great! It's a very large place and would be good for large groups.
