We were looking forward to Annette Yang's entry into the Portland restaurant scene. She has been involved with some excellent efforts in San Francisco (Nettie's Crab Shack, for one). We were encouraged by the smartly remodeled space in the former home of Noisette. Last night, we gave it a try. Perhaps it is a testament to how far Portland restaurants have come in the last ten years, but Le Vieux does nothing to distinguish itself from other eateries in our food-oriented town. Other than the intelligently remodeled space (a former house), it is a mediocre dining experience. Our fish stew was solid. However, the squash was served tepid and the turnip dish was every bit as bland as your childhood notion of turnips. The chicken was thoughtfully prepared but it took so long to arrive it almost didn't matter. Le Vieux is one of those places that makes sense to visit if you're in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't recommend it as a destination.

Verrry good! Creative fresh food, great flavors/seasoning. Sampled nibbles, small plates, desserts. Terrific wine selection, plenty of old world choices to enjoy with the food. Everything was terrific, finished off with dessert wines and sweets.

Wonderful French-Mediterranean place with very flavorful food. We went to this place for dinner and liked the small dimly lit ambience of the place as soon as we entered. We ordered the octopus for the appetizer course and then ordered the pork osso buco and half chicken for the supper. The octopus had some greens and a tomato based sauce, which when had together was very good. The Pork Osso Buco was very well cooked and tender. The white beans with the pork were very good and complemented it very well. The real star of the meal for me was the half chicken. It was very flavorful and the taste had percolated all the way inside. But, the skin was especially tasty. The garnishing with the corn was also very tasty. I would definitely recommend the chicken and pork both. Tip: they seem to change there menu so if you are looking for sown thing specific checking might be a good option

Went for Portland Dining Month, had been to this space when it was Noisette before. Very cool, thoughtful remodel. Airy and open, with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The drinks menu looked great, with a nice selection of unique cocktails and good local beers. The wine BTG was good too, if a bit skimpy on Oregon, from what I remember. The wine list itself was very nicely executed bit could use perhaps a bit more diversity, with some more Oregon wines and perhaps breadth across more of France too. We did the PDX Dining Month menu and it was wonderful. The salad was tart and zingy, with a delicious dressing. The moules et frites were spot on, you could taste the mollusk instead of having it drowned by the sauce! The wild boar tagliatelle was fantastic, with the spicy-rye pasta complementing the smoky, earthy boar meat. Dessert was cookies and cream, also wonderfully done. A creme brûlée was one of the best I've had in Portland. Pay particular interest to the dessert wine list, it's brilliantly executed. Service was top notch, the owner is a delight to talk to, and I cannot wait to return to try the "regular" menu.

I highly recommend this place! Everything was so delicate and delicious, with all seasonal ingredients used in very complimentary ways. Annette was so nice and welcoming! I will definitely be coming back!

OMG, this is a real French bakery Patisserie. The quiche was fabulous. The croque mon sur was amazing. You must try this place.

Ate here tonight and LOVED it! Perfect atmosphere of charm, lighting and warmth. Excellent service. The changing menu has few choices but love that when the choices are good. Ordered seafood stew with cod "meatballs", mussels, clams. Would come back here just for this - crusty bread and very fresh. Lamb dish my husband loved. Beautiful salad to share. Roasted cauliflower and root vegetable slaw as sides. We loved every bit of it. Had a great cocktail, and very good wines by the glass list. We had the honey doughnuts for dessert which were awesome. Normal prices with good portions (not "small plates which makes my husband nuts!) and this will become one of our favorite neighborhood spots. And you can PARK! Which is becoming impossible for certain NW spots. Best of luck to this new venture.

Great food composed with a unique and thoughtful approach. The service is friendly, and the restaurant layout feels open and spacious. There were also very good wine recommendations made by the staff. All of this and at quite a reasonable price. Sure to become one of Portland's favorite.

Last evening, I had a wonderful dining experience. The Manhattan I had before my meal was just right. It was made with rye which is what the original cocktail called for. For dinner, I had a simple salad and roast chicken. Both were superb. The salad mixed pieces of melons with greens and feta cheese. The combination was delicious. The chicken was so tender and juicy with just the right seasonings. It was served with something that tasted like a poultry stuffing. Everything was what I consider perfect. For dessert, I had another wonderful Manhattan. Service was what I like.....There when I want something but absent when I don't. Last night was a first of what I think will be many visits.

Where to have a nice meal on a Monday night? That was my dilemma when I was too lazy to cook and didn't care for fast food - that is how I came to know Le Vieux - fine dining on a Monday night - and that first meal has been repeated now on weekends with friends and family - the staff, including Annette, is fantastic. The drinks (I love their Blood & Sand) are unique, the food varies from subtle (delicious ling cod) to deep and rich - and they have great wine recommendations for all pairings. hope the rest of Portland finds this place soon as well!

We've been here three times since the opening and every experience has exceeded expectations in quality of food, creativity, service and all around ambiance. We look forward to making Le Vieux a regular destination, especially for weekend brunch! Thanks Annette & Brian!

We had long admired Le Vieux on our way home and decided to visit for breakfast. We used Open Table to make a reservation for noon on a Saturday. We walked in and but for two tables, the place was empty. My wife greeted as we entered saying that we had a reservation. The woman who met us (Annette, the owner as we now realize) appeared to grimace, and curtly told us to follow her. We sat down and examined the menu she had briskly handed out to us silently. She returned after a long while and asked us what we'd like to eat. I told her the three breakfast items we had settled on. She left without asking if we wanted anything to drink. We love eating out in Portland and have some firm favorites. Nothing sinks a place in our book like unfriendly demeanors. Why is it so difficult to be nice to be people who are choosing to spend their money at an establishment and make them feel welcome? I got up and found Annette and told her I wanted to cancel our order and that we were leaving. I could see she was bewildered so I explained that we'd prefer not to eat at a place that was not welcoming. To her credit she wished me a nice day. Bummer really since it is so local to where we live. We went for a scrumptious (and friendly) breakfast at the Daily Cafe where we return often.

We stumbled onto Le Vieux one late afternoon and discovered a hidden gem. The owner, Annette ran a business in my hometown (San Francisco) and immediate made a connection. We made a reservation for a few days later and brought our 10 & 11 year old daughters. Annette greeted us with a warm smile and seated us. Our waiter John was a pleasure, warm, nice, gentle man who made us feel at home as we had been guest for years. The quality of the food was very good, as was the service. Too bad we had to go back home the next day or we would have gone back. So next time we are in town, we will surely visit again. Frank Melis Golden Gate Wine Cellars San Francisco

Great little brunch spot in the NW 23rd district. I had the lemon ricotta pancakes with a maple-honey syrup which was outstanding.. 5 stars for that. For the main brunch dish I got the lamb meatballs skillet... taste wise it was excellent, but for 15$ they could have given more than 2 measly meatballs... so in terms of value for money I was a bit disappointed.

We stayed at the Silver Cloud Inn just next door and didn't want to walk too far for dinner. We stumbled upon Le Vieux and we couldn't have been happier. It was on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't busy at all. The service was prompt and attentive and we order the Pot Au Feu and Saffron/Ginger chicken. I worry a bit with French style cooking in that it can often be heavy, but no at Le Vieux. The food was light, yet so filling, and flavors very well thought out. Another concern that we had was portion sizes being too small. No such concern here. The Pot Au Feu was so filling and the half chicken, was, well... half a chicken. Cocktails were great and so enjoyable. Try the Ciao Bella. It doesn't look like a lot and is on the sweet side, but it was oh so good. We could have had that as a dessert.

It's a new place in the Portland dining scene and glad we caught it before it becomes too crowded. It has cute patio seating with a nice view of the Burnside hills. We had cauliflower puttanesca, spicy lamb merguez, clams and lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberries. The food was too notch and delicious. However, what captured the heart was whole wheat orange scone and rhubarb, honey jam. Worth coming back for. It just made the Saturday morning so much more beautiful.

Wow! It's tough to get 5 stars outta my tightly sealed star container... Yet Le Vieux deserves it. Two of us had brunch. The menu was so inviting, we had to order lots and share them all. Everything from the warm vanilla and orange whole wheat scone with rhubarb jam, through the 4 or 5 other dishes we ate, was wonderful. A pairing of ingredients and balance of flavors only achieved by great professionals. I have to mention the best brunch dish I've eaten in a very long time... Poached eggs atop (cloudlike) polenta and chard all blanketed with a white wine braised rabbit sauce. Phenomenal. If I had a criticism it would be that the cocktail was so chock full of ice that it ended up being a pretty small drink for the price. But there's always 1 thing you can find, no matter what restaurant you're in. One of the top new restaurants in town. In a traditionally tough location. Let's get the word out people...

Fantastic new French-Mediterranean place in Alphabet District. Go now before the Portland crowds get there. Started with the lemon ricotta pancakes. Three small, delicious pancakes filled with blueberry compote. Perfect start. Main course was spicy lamb sausage with clams and harissa. The sausage was perfectly done and there were a few dozen clams in there. Also tried the cauliflower puttanesca which was really tasty. Had their orange scone for dessert. The scone was crispy and the right amount of sweet, but the accompanying rhubarb sauce was absolutely knockout. And of course it's made in house.

We had our fourth meal at La Vieux recently, since we live two blocks away. The front of house manager, Annette, recognized us and greeted us warmly. I'm currently doing Paleo, so I had scouted out the online menu (which may or may not be the actual current offerings) and knew I could get my needs met. Our table had an appetizer of roasted cauliflower and salsify dusted with parmesan and lightly broiled; those who ate it deemed it so delicious that one diner placed a second order for his side dish. I had the cold asparagus with egg "mimosa," barely cooked asparagus with a grated soft boiled egg on top and a touch of champagne vinegar (I think) for that tiny touch of acid. The liquid plus the slightly runny yolk made a superb sauce for the cold appetizer. I ordered the half chicken, served on a bed of grilled escarole. The chicken had been perfectly brined, the breast tender and moist (I had to share the thigh and leg with my husband, since I got full eating every bite of the delicious escarole, a whole head sliced in half and grilled until soft but not limp. The restaurant wasn't full and our table was next to the entrance, so we had the pleasure of conversing with Annette, who took excellent care of us. Service was both timely, attentive, and correct. I didn't order dessert, but the husband ordered the generous serving of warm rhubarb crisp with ice cream, which he enjoyed enough to leave the ramekin completely clean. He might have enjoyed it even more, he said, if it had had another spoonful of ice cream... I'd ignore those early reviews just after Le Vieux opened. I give it five stars not because it's the hautest cuisine in town, because that's not what vibe they're after. It's nice enough for a date night but casual enough for jeans and a sweatshirt. It's the atmosphere and caring, plus excellent food, that make this a five-star experience for me. These are our neighbors and this is their neighborhood. And if you're doing Paleo, you can be sure to find something on the menu for you, or the chef will make some allowances. We haven't done brunch, but one of our fellow diners raved about it. I can't imagine it would be anything but delicious...

We had a spectacular Sunday lunch at Le Vieux yesterday. Annette and Brian, the owners, were greeter/server and cook, respectively. Very friendly folks and they know the restaurant business. We know because we checked online to apprise their history in San Fran where they migrated north from recently. The menu is diverse and french, not Mediterranean, in my view. It does not really matter because the food choices are exciting and not mundane at all. And the preparation is excellent. My fellow diner had an omelette that was perfectly cooked. I had a rabbit dish with poached eggs that rocked. We both had different Bloody Mary versions; one cognac-based and one gin-based. Both were very good and they offer 9 versions so we will be back to try them all. This place is great and deserves all 5 stars. Park on Vaughn and get some food.

La Vieux is a breath of fresh air in an admittedly challenging location. Their menu is adventurous without being difficult to navigate. Traditional dishes blend well with more contemporary choices to give every type of diner an option. I really enjoyed my experience here and I wish them all the luck in the world. (Photo was taken Atuala, a nearby tapas place. Also very good)

Love the idea of the restaurant. They have just opened for business as of 4 days ago and are still working out the kinks. The restaurant has been started by a couple with history of restaurant in San Francisco. They have a great idea of themed menus and rotating menus with the season in mind. They have started with a Moraccan menu. The service was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the menu. We started with the fried feta which was dry and the feta was cold - expected a more flavor and was hard to believe that it was under seasoned. The flat bread was good, but needed some seasoning too. We then moved onto the morgues sausage and Kumamoto oysters. The oysters were a little gritty- needed a little better cleaning. The sausage had me completely baffled - did not feel that the saltiness of the sausage added anything to this dish. Seemed very disjointed. The savior of this meal was the entrees. The short rib confit was very nice and prepared well. The lamb Tagine with couscous was very aromatic and had a definite wonderful winter hardiness. It would have been nice to have a little more lamb, but with the favors this is forgivable. Wonderful French press coffee service and don't miss the Orange honey donuts. Overall, we will give it another try - they are working out the bumps. Loved the new space.

So, F___ the NW Examiner (which is more often my opinion than not). My first experience at Le Vieux was stellar! Staff and owner so engaging and helpful. Cocktail and wine selections (and advice) superb. Everything we ate was great. Reasonable prices. Will surely be back.

Review for dinner: The food was very good, the service was prompt, and there were several things on the menu that interested me. I felt like the ambiance was very slightly lacking given the prices, but overall it was a pleasant experience. Our meals didn't quite blow us away on our first visit, but this place was promising -- we'll be back!

Had a great meal here after the Blues Festival. Had an amazing salad with avocado, honeydew, and cantaloupe--with just a hint of jalapeno. Perfect for a brutally hot Portland day. We tried both fish dishes, albacore and salmon, grilled to perfection with great sides. Excellent french wine pairings and plum galette made a perfect meal. Annette is a gracious and welcoming host. You should definitely give this place a try.

How wonderful to find this new cosy genial spot in the 'hood. Nice diverse Continental menu geared around small plates, with amenable service and a most comfortable setting (esp the conservatory). Enjoyed the French-themed menu, wine was solid and most of all the friendly atmosphere. This is a keeper indeed. Shhh!

Excellent food, wonderful service and an ever changing menu. Fit for foodies, romantic dates and families. The chef is creative and uses seasonal ingredients. If they have the ricotta cheesecake order two.,,, it's the bomb. Full disclosure- this restaurant is around the block from our house and having it so close makes me happy.., no need to drive.

I had a great dining experience here with my two girlfriends, one of whom brought her baby. Annette, I believe, greeted us warmly and welcomed my friend's little one with open arms. I started with a cocktail, a vespa, and easily one of my favorite drinks in the city. I followed it with a cassoulet, perfectly cooked and perhaps a little salty if I were to offer any criticisms, but I would certainly order it again. Can't wait to try out their brunch!

Stellar service and everything I tried, I'd be quite happy to have again. If you have any sort of inclination towards tiramisu, be sure to save room for dessert...very memorable. Can't wait to come back & try brunch!

Went there on "date night" with my wife. Expecting more but a solid effort for being open only a week. Turnips were blah but saving grace was the sauce on them, spiced with paprika base. The lamb was good, portion should increase but good enough to eat all. The other dish was the beef short ribs and although I prefer lamb to beef, these surpassed the lamb by a long shot. Well done there. They'll rotate the culinary specialities of the various countries surrounding Mediterranean Sea. We will be back, but would advise to check first.

This is a hidden gem in NW Portland, and I absolutely love it. The dishes are unique in their own way, and not trying to replicate what every other Portland restaurant is serving up right now. The owner is attentive but not overbearing, and very knowledgeable about wine and food ingredients. Not surprising seeing as she and her husband are very seasoned in the food industry. From seafood to meat, all with a subtle French spin the menu offers up tasty and unpretentious creative dishes served in a casual and relaxed environment. I've eaten there twice now with my girlfriend and both times we were really impressed. Oh and just to top it off, someone has carefully chosen a brilliant 80s inspired British electronic pop playlist. What better way to eat halibut with chorizo whilst listening the New Order We'll definitely be going back to eat there very soon. Hopefully this great place will have a long life in the NW.

Le Vieux only opened 2 months ago, and already has their kitchen and front of the house in order thanks to Annette Yang. This is a new world Portland take on old world classical French and Italian dishes. Excellent service by apparently well trained and experienced wait staff. Rush to get here before it is fully discovered. And do not missed the braised squid! We also heard they also do weekend brunch.

Love this restaurant ... Proprietress Annette Yang makes us feel welcome every time. Highlights of this visit; the meatballs (perfect texture and flavor), cauliflower soup, ricotta stuffed cabbage (beautiful AND tasty), and a mind-blowingly light ricotta cheese cake with berries.

Sunday brunch at Le Vieux was delicious. I had the skillet baked eggs, and my husband had the omelette. Both dishes were perfectly prepared. Great choice of coffee, and the potatoes are so wonderful, albeit a real splurge w.r.t. calories. A great place to get and not have a line, and get great food.

Service was excellent - friendly and attentive. Started with a delicious dish of Greek meatballs in a Mediterranean tomato and olive sauce. The kale salad was amply portioned and very tasty. We decided to share the half chicken, which was perfectly seasoned and mouthwateringly tender. Paired it all with a nice Tempranillo. We really enjoyed our experience at Le Vieux and we'll definitely return.

We have been here several times. The menu intriguing and the staff completely enthusiastic about the menu. They are knowledgeable about the wine list and the wine list had a good spread of price point. The cassoulet was to die for. Best cocktail in the house: royal gin and tonic. You won't believe it. Already craving our next visit.

Overall good experience! We had brunch today. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The drinks were flavorful, light and showcased innovation without being pretentious. The addition of the enclosed "porch" had an indoor/outdoor feel which was nice in January. I would have liked more sweet options on the menu but the amaranth waffle was enjoyable. I thought most the dishes lacked salt but were prepared properly otherwise. We would go back but with so many options in Portland I don't know how soon.

Went recently for my birthday dinner. I had high hopes for this place! I made reservation ahead of time through Open Table, and for some reason it had been cancelled, but they were able to 'make it work'. I really like the concept, and the space is great, however the service was slow and not very welcoming, and food was mediocre. Nothing remarkable. We left feeling pretty underwhelmed. I get that they are brand new and probably need time to work out the kinks, so I'm willing to give it another try a few months.

The theme was Tuscany. 4 in our party. Excellent, friendly service. Space was very noisy with piped in music, but they turned this down on our request. Food was meh. I had porchetta; very fatty thin slices in bed of decent polenta. Bland and very overly fatty. 2 others had tagliatelle with boar ragu; decent but a bit bland; not memorable. 1 had chicken; I did not try this. Appetizer -- rosemary buns that were so hard I had to use knife and fork to eat them. Salads --small, acceptable, but meh. Decent wine list. Alas, Portland has much better ... I wish them well, there is a path to improvement .. but for now I am not returning.

We were four and celebrating two birthdays'. One friend had already experienced dinner at Le Vieux. The rest of us were going in blind, but certainly very experienced in the art of great dining. Le Vieux was such a beautiful and wonderful surprise in a culinary sense in every way one can imagine! We four had high expectations. All of us were over-the-top amazed at the artful and tenderness of Brian's cooking skills. More to follow on that. Annette is such a gracious hostess and connoisseur, it is no surprise she can tell you everything about every dish. And our server, Lisa, knew all of it too! We were in high spirits, given our celebration, but more so because of how wonderful the food was! The ambience is warm and cozy, open-aired and friendly. The lighting is also a compliment to the atmosphere. I loved looking into the kitchen, without it being in your face to experience the mood and tone of the staff working together, though they certainly were a complete team! So now onto the real deal! The Food! We all decided to order different dishes to get a taste of everything we could. Salads: Suzie: Beans and greens. We all dipped in and loved the tenderness of the beans and the flavors of the rapini and salsa verde. Carol: Simple Salad. An ample portion that I could have shared. She ate it all! Marlo: Chopped Salad. Again, very ample. She didn't share it! KK: Grilled Romaine. Sublime! That was mine. It was absolutely wonderful. So crisp, yet moist, tangy with a perfect blend of egg and herbs. I want that again! Entrees: Suzie: Charmoula Roasted Steelhead. The preparation was perfect, grilled just enough without drying it out. The savory herbs and flavorings brought it up to a level of perfection I have never tasted before. Brian's experience at Chez Panisese surely is evident here. Carol: Has a passion for a great roasted chicken. She was happily dealt a dish she shared sparingly. And she ate every bite on her plate. We are going back again she says! Marlo: Daring soul that she is, she ordered the lamb shank. That was what I wanted to order as that is a challenging dish for some chef's. Oh, but not for Brian. The small taste she shared was out of this world wonderful. My next dream for dinner there! KK: So as another challenge, I order the Pork Loin! What a fantastic surprise I got!!! I have never, ever tasted such a succulent piece of pork loin without the overpowering taste of salt and brine and herbs. Desserts: I forgot to get that menu: Trust me. they have a rhubarb w/ cream that you will die for. The Creme Brulle is a lay down, for sure! An absolute must. Le Vieux is a Gem in this neighborhood. It's a neighborhood that is expanding and needs the lifeblood of young and energetic spirits like Annette and Brian, who have put their lifeblood into our neighborhood. That is the most important part of all of this growth. Portland is a growing community. We need and want the young and creative souls around us. It keeps us all alive and thriving!

Wonderful, friendly staff. Very knowledgable especially with wine recommendations. Relaxing and warm ambiance. Delicious meals! Had a cheese plate and shared some veggies and dessert. Everything was great and it was a lovely meal. Highly recommend!!

Stellar service and everything I tried, I'd be quite happy to have again. If you have any sort of inclination towards tiramisu, be sure to save room for dessert...very memorable. Can't wait to come back & try brunch!

Terrific food, friendly owners make you feel welcome. I have been there twice now and everything was great. I like the fact that the menu rotates every three weeks giving the frequent diner something fun to look forward to next time. Save room for dessert. the ricotta cheesecake is wonderful
