I really had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately, the food was lacking. The price was decent, but the carne asada was bland and the lengua was overly salty. =/ I couldn't even finish eating it. 3 stars for the amount of food you get for the price ~$7-8 for a burrito).

Delicious food. Great variety. Best for picking up and taking home/to the park. The seating inside is limited. The hot salsa is flavorful with a kick. They do sell beer. I recommend the nachos or carne asada tacos.

THE BEST! I'm from LA and get homesick for some mexican food quite often (like 5 times a week). I would make this stuff at home but it takes FOREVER. Luckily, I live close to La Bonita. The beans are perfect, just like my mama made em. I would hate Portland without La Bonita!

I guess my expectations were too high after I walked in. A very nice spot in a great location for me anyway. It turned out to be more of a cart experience, just indoors. Don't get me wrong I love food carts, but I was looking for more of an actual restaurant experience here. The place was clean and had a steady stream of customers while we were there. The staff was certainly friendly, and the food came out quickly. But here is really why only 3 stars. The food was ok. Not bad in any way, just nothing that jumped out and hit you over the head till you gave up and said Wow that's great. The rice, fine. The beans pretty good but a little runny. The taquitos ok. the tortillas homemade and pretty good. The chile releno was not too eggy so good, but the sauce was also very runny. The food is definitely fresh and that is a big positive. We will try it again no doubt, we just hope they find some "WOW" in their dishes instead of more meh.

Good location, good food, but unfriendly/bad service. I don't like giving my money to people that don't give a crap about customer service

I had good food years ago at their Alberta location, but this one seemed of lesser quality. I just stopped in for convenience the other day and notice they raised their prices too, $7 for a ala carte burrito??? I went to Boulevard Taco down the street and paid 2 bucks less for something better. Lower your prices, raise quality and people will return.

Best breakfast burrito by far hands down. I drive from deep se Portland just for their breakfast burritos.

One if the better Mexican places in the 'hood. Knocking them a star for no mention of where they source their meats and produce and not having a foodwaste/compost bin next to the garbage.

Outstanding! Tacos, Enchiladas, Burritos all excellent. Pleasant service. Thank you and welcome to the neighborhood!

La Bonita is relatively inexpensive, quick and friendly service, and decent food. They have a couple of vegan options, mainly tamales and burritos. The tamales are very good. The veggie fajita burrito is the best vegan option for burritos, I think. I wish they had some vegan cheese or tofu to add to their burritos. I also wish that the burrito tortilla was grilled a bit more, as it sometimes seems soggy. All in all though, this is a good spot for burritos after 9PM in the neighborhood.

The food at la Bonita has always been better than other lesser (cheaper) Mexican spots. I'm happy to spend a couple extra bucks to get a plate I know I'll enjoy. The meats are better, the kitchen seems to take a little more pride than other in-n-out burrito shops. The gentleman going between the kitchen and the counter was really hustling and doing a great job. I felt bad as he kept calling to a coworker to help the line but she was oblivious and buried in her cell phone. Felt kinda awkward for the customers. But again, the gentleman who took care of my order was awesome! Cheers! We'll definitely be back!

How many times have you gone to a place and had them just forget your order? I am 3 for 3 with this location. This is how the ordering works. You order, then you pay. Then you wait 30 minutes and ask, "Where is my food? I ordered 30 minutes ago." Then they start to make it. That is the secret to this place. You need to stand by the kitchen and glare at them and remind them, "Chicken tacos... three of them." "Three chicken tacos." "Yeah I still don't know where my tacos are." It sucks that I can't walk to another burrito place from my house, but it is worth the drive to NOT go to La Bonita Killingsworth.

The two things that La Bonita has that make me want to go back right now? The carnitas and the housemate hot sauce. No joke. You should go there too, right now. I don't get to this part of town too often, and when i do it's because of a certain employee store with three stripes for the logo. I've never eaten up here, but after an hour or so in said store and making a few too many purchases, I was hungry. A quick search on Yelp and I wandered north. I found a Thai place, but it didn't look like anyone was there, even with four star reviews. I went on Killingsworth and saw the sign for La Bonita and took a look. Mexican food. In this town, mostly good, but I've been burned once before. I will admit, not many meat choices, and I wasn't happy with my last Mexican place for that, but once I tried the carnitas burrito, all the negatives in my head went away. Carnitas, rice, beans, lettuce and tomatoes. I also got some chips and pico and was using the pico on my burrito. I also asked for hot sauce. Caliente! Not spicy for me (to clarify, the red sauce, I didn't try the green), but I killed off the remaining bottle the woman gave me and I asked for another one, plus sauce to go. Yes, the hot sauce was that good. The carnitas were moist and so so so so full of flavor. So the burrito was great and huge. Think Chipotle burrito size. The Latin music was pumping, the storefront was colorful, the staff, friendly and there were plenty of Mexican beers, Jarritos and Jumex to be embedded upon. I will have to get back here sooner. Who has another 50% off at the striped store? Just saying. Enjoy.

Finally stopped into this neighborhood spot for lunch. It's a great lunch or casual dinner spot. Nothing fancy, casual but housing a bar. The fish tacos I had were some of the best I've had, well ever, in Portland. They were fresh, authentic and full of Fish! Reminds me of fish tacos you get in Mexico. My guess is everything else on the menus delicious too, I'll definitely be going back to find out. Service was good, but I was the only one there. Parking is limited to side streets but not overly crowded around there. Affordable prices for quantity and quality.

Great authentic fare, great prices, not greasy,no complaints! We will be back! After getting TOTALLY SNUBBED at Batter PDX, this was some quality grub that saved the day!

One too many times I've been given a cheese and/or meat burrito after ordering something vegan. For an apparently vegan-friendly menu, this is just not okay. Not to mention, you don't know until you bite into it. They also like to charge you more if you ask them to give you salsa instead of egg and cheese. No thanks. I'm done with this place.

  • Kreig D.

The food was very flavorful and the meats were super tender and juicy. Flavor:Price is absolutely favorable!!! I preferred the green sauce to the red here and think some would want it hotter but that can be easily addressed with condiments. I do wish they had Jamaica tea.

This place is an excellent stop whenever you're north Portland the people are very very nice laid-back chill. The atmosphere and the food is outstanding it's one of the better places in Portland for Mexican food.

I enjoy coming here for many reasons. 1. Its in Alberta and there are lots of places to see 2. This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in town. I travel to Mexico for work every month. 3. The portions are large. 4. The quality of the food is excellent 5. Its two doors down from my favorite donut shop 6. I recommend the fish tacos. However, the chimichangas are deliciously enormous 7. Horchata is delicious What more can you ask for ? Street parking and all items are priced fairly.

Slow service, got a chorizo burrito, they forgot to make it and then when they did, it didn't have any chorizo in it! Also, Bruno Mars made me cry the whole time. Not into it. Mediocre at best.

Solid, fast Mexican cuisine. Impressive portion sizes - great value for the cost! Definitely will be going back. We snagged burritos and enchiladas - everything tasted good, great for what's available in Oregon, but was in all honesty slightly bland - needed more tasty spices veggies to liven things up. Next time we'll ask for extra pico and sauces.

We have only eaten here once (take out) and the food was delicious! I had the asada tostada and my husband had an asada burrito. All the ingredients were fresh with good flavor. The service was a little slow but it was 2pm on a Monday. The woman who took our order was friendly too.

I frequent this little restaurant more often than I'd like to admit, but the pull of a quick, tasty burrito is a temptation which I must indulge. The staff at La Bonita is friendly and provide quick service. La Bonita serves beer and cocktails which is requisite in my opinion.

I like eating at this location over the Alberta location. The service is quick and they are super nice! It's family friendly and this spot is relaxed. My favorite is the veg tamales. delicious!

I miss the days in SF where I could choose from 10 taquerias with great, cheap, Mexican food. This place is close. A quick walk from work. Clean and efficient. And a decent veggi burrito. Add guac and sc and its great. House made chips. Yummy enchiladas. My friend loves the tacos and has done all the fillings Definitely will frequent this place.

Excellent Mexican food! After hearing about how great their breakfast burritos, I figured this was a must try place. We went there on Wednesday or Thursday night for dinner for our first experience. My boyfriend got the carne asada nachos and I got two fish tacos. I love fish tacos, but it's hard to find good ones, and these were the best I have had in Portland besides Por Que No's fish tacos (hands down the best). And my boyfriend's nachos? AMAZING. heaped high with all the good stuff (pinto beans, meat, cheese, sour cream, guac, etc.). GREAT service both times we went there, the person who took our order (a different person each time) was friendly and helpful and just all around nice. Our food was cooked right then and there and we didn't have a long wait at all. My boyfriend had time to run next door to grab a cup of Stumptown coffee from the place next door to go with his food (which they were totally cool with, as they appeared to not have coffee, and my boyfriend loves his Stumptown coffee). Went there for breakfast on a Saturday, and tried the infamous breakfast burrito, but to be honest, I will probably opt for the tacos next time I go. I guess there wasn't enough flavor in my burrito? Perhaps I should have used more hot sauce? It was definitely a good breakfast burrito, but not the best I have ever had. My boyfriend got nachos (again) and they were just as delicious as they were the previous time around. Their bathrooms were nice and clean, and this location is definitely child friendly with booster seats and highchairs. We saw a family come in with a toddler and a child and friends, and it looks like they easily set up a table for all of them to comfortably sit at.

Maybe too soon to say, I've only been to this one once and it was yesterday. I got a chicken burrito to go. Perhaps it was because I was starving and it was a 2pm lunch but it was DELICIOUS! They definitely don't skimp out on their ingredients, it was very filling. A good and bad thing to note was that the guy who took my order didn't speak English. He got my order right but he couldn't tell me how long it was going to take since I had to go next door to Fuel for some coffee. Quality food and the customer service was alright.

Never tried this place before. I was walking to the food carts on Killingsworth and Greeley but they were closed so I decided to give them a try. The Good: Great location, convenient and laid out nicely. Outdoor street seating. The Bad: My friend asked for no beans and rice in the burrito...he got beans and rice. My posole was greasy and the pork was fatty. The taco I had was bland and the horchata was so-so. Willing to give another try but with a town full of great Mexican food you have to stand out to make it.

My friends talked this place up. I was intrigued. I was then... confused after tasting my meal: Were my friends just dumb or sheltered to say that La Bonita was "excellent"? I tried 3 different entree dishes around the table, and none of them excelled at anything, mole sauce aside. My meal was about a dollar to 2 dollars more than I anticipated. I ordered 2 enchiladas: chicken, one carnitas. Nothing special. The green sauce was too overpowering to enjoy the meal, and I eat spicy food on a regular basis. There was no warning about the temperature. The burritos however, were a redemption, not by quality, but by quantity: For 7.95 or so, you can enjoy a HUGE burrito, stuffed with rice, meat, beans, cheese (Only a little however) and lettuce. Don't expect much in regard to new and exciting menu items however. La Bonita is one of those "Crap, Pambiche is too far away from me and may be too cramed tonight and I don't feel like stopping by trader Joe's, so I will go to La Bonita" places. Don't be fooled: I am sure there are some decent things on the menu, I just didn't see or taste them out of 3 different dishes tonight and I was a little let down from the hype my friends had given it. I know after this, they need to get out more.

Disclaimer: I'm a regular and maybe slightly biased, But really I just love good food. If a mexican place gets enchiladas right, You've won me over. Im pretty particular, I like green sauces that are tangy, with a slight lime taste and medium heat. Check, check, check for La Bonita. The sauce is pretty strong so I can understand why some would be turned off by it, but I have cravings for their sauce. BTW for the reviews saying enchiladas are $10-11. Get the special and its $8.95 with a drink. On top of amazing enchiladas, The Tacos are pretty damn good. I've only experience the chicken and carne asada and both were delicious. I knocked one star off for a couple reasons. Price: The prices have gone up abit since they opened, Not a big deal since the price:quality ratio is still good in my opinion, But i'd go more frequently if it was cheaper. Chips and Salsa included: Someone suggested it above and I like the idea. This ties in with price abit, If they added chips and salsa with your meal when you eat in. Thats it, Go get some food.

Yay! A new La Bonita that's much closer to home than the other one! Well, I guess the other one isn't that far off but it's nice to have one that I can walk to instead of biking. From what I remember about the other location, the menu and prices seemed to be exactly the same. The fabulous breakfast options are still here, as well as their abundance of vegetarian and vegan options. The primary benefit of this new location is that it is HUGE. I recall that it can be somewhat difficult finding a table over on Alberta, but that will be much less of a problem here. Until it gets really popular, of course. I'm not going to get into the argument of whether La Bonita is "authentic" or not, because it really doesn't matter to me. What does matter is how delicious the food is, and La Bonita's food is VERY delicious. Freshness can sometimes be an issue at many of the Mexican restaurants here in town, but not with this place. I ordered the garden burrito and every aspect of it was absolutely perfect! The corn had that lovely pop to it, the squash and carrots weren't too mushy or undercooked, the cilantro wasn't overbearing, and the onions added just the right amount of spice to this burrito. The only way it could have been better is if the vegetables had come straight out of my garden. The prices might be slightly more expensive than your typical Mexican fare, but the quality and freshness more than makes up for it. If you come here, you know that you're going to get a consistently good burrito or taco and you won't be taking any chances. I do believe that they will be changing their hours from 10-10 at the beginning of March. It has something to do with their liquor license that they are waiting on.

La Bonita has become our neighborhood mexican spot. To me, nothing really stands out but everything is good. It's a great place for takeout when you've had a long day and you want something easy. I like the carnitas tacos and the breakfast burrito. The tacos are really good too, as is the salad.

This is our neighborhood Mexican restaurant and everyone there makes you feel like you're part of their family. They're super nice and helpful and the food is some of the best I've ever had. Chicken tacos to.die.for. The restaurant is super clean and the kitchen is open for all to see.

Even if it wasn't two blocks from my home the food would be worth the trip! Wow! So close to home! So good! Lots of vegetarian options. Friendly service. Above standard atmosphere. Check it out!

Some of the best tacos in town, great asada, carnitas, pastor, all of them. Tortas and tamales are good, too. For some reason the burritos are kind of crappy. Never been able to figure that one out.

Having only been to the Alberta location once, I didn't have too many expectations for La Bonita's newest spot in North Portland - but I did have some. For one, I knew the burritos would be pretty expensive. I know I am spoiled by King Burrito and Tienda Santa Cruz #2 with their under $5 menu. However, La Bonita had a price listed and I got charged an additional $0.45. I really hate being the person to make a scene, especially over less than 2 quarters. So I let it go. I let it go because of my second expectation: a huge burrito. When I went to the Alberta location I couldn't even finish my burrito. Sadly, what I was given at this place was more like a ball of chewy tortilla with pre-portioned al pastor. Lame. Did I really pay $8 (with tip) for this? I'm ashamed to say I did. Ah, maybe Portland really is transforming me into things I shall not type here. I lost a lot of credibility that day since my MEXICAN family was visiting. They witnessed my softball of tortilla, lettuce, and pork. "Dad, I swear I don't eat this kind of food. There are better places, I swear, just give me a second chance." Then he left for a pack of cigarettes, never to return again. Just kidding, but he also thought the food was disappointing. I really wanted to like this place, with its brightly painted walls, artsy menu, and friendly staff, but I can't say that I will return. It's just too much of a pride and financial risk.

We moved quite close to this location and have visited a few times. The first time we held no expectations, it was a weekday afternoon and the place was totally empty. The two women working were chillin' and talking before we got there and I sort of felt like we were interrupting them, but they were friendly and got right on our order. While we were waiting for our tacos a hoard of people showed up. Which is a pretty good sign! When the food arrived we were so surprised, it looked delicious and tasted even better. Since the first time we've tried the pulled pork taco, the beef and the al pastor. I don't believe I've ever had al pastor before, but I'm TOTALLY in love. It was so wonderful, spiceful but not too spicy. So far we've only tried the tacos, which are a daily special. Two tacos, beans, rice and a drink for a decent price. Overall, a laid back place with good and fast food.

My mother would be appalled if I told her that I paid $6.95 for a fried tortilla, with two tiny pieces of chicken and lettuce on it. She would also provide me with a verbal calculation of approximately how many tostadas I could have made for the same price if I wasn't a lazy bastard who went to La Bonita. "Joo coodah fed joo ca-sin Carlos, Lorree! Joo no eet wu-dah tested bed-ir, tu!" To be frank with you, I didn't know I had a cousin Carlos, but what I do know is that the last time I went to La Bonita, I spent nearly $10 on a burrito. I didn't care at the time because I was hungover. Today when my family of 3 left there dropping nearly $30 on 3 simple items, it kind of hurt my feelings. I wouldn't have such a problem with their prices if they offered wait service or maybe table chips. I could justify parting with the extra skrilla if their food was mind-blowingly delicious. But it's not. They don't even have sopes on the menu. In their defense, the counter guys are friendly, the horchata is good, and the space seems clean. But next time I am in the market for a burrito, I will take my mom's advice, invite cousin Carlos, and do it myself. "Eet weel test so mash bed-ir, tu."

Had you talked to me a few years ago about the prospect of another La Bonita being located in my 'hood, I would have been ecstatic. Then again, I was still surprised. I was still intrigued enough to go in. It's the same people you know and love at the Alberta location. It's the same menu. It's the same gut busting portions. It's the same 'order at the counter and they'll call your number' ordering system. Most importantly, it's the same ridiculously high-priced Mexican food. I don't understand why their menu is so expensive. Almost $6 for a burrito? $7 for a quesadilla? Enchiladas are like $11? This is Mexican robbery. It's not even that good. My burrito is so full of lettuce, it might as well be a warm salad wrapped in a tortilla. It was gross. The meat quesadilla you're paying a premium for will not have enough meat to justify the price. The salsa that comes with the chips is really watery. The same friendly, sweet service is there [I was given a free order of salsa and chips because they forgot to take the cheese off my burrito--and they realized the error, not me], but damnit if there aren't 100x better quality grub for a few dollars less.

Decent Mexican food. A bit pricier than other similar Mexican restaurants in NoPo, but conveniently located at the corner of Greely and Killingsworth. The tamale platter was very large even with only two tamales, and the chimichanga so big that I had to save a third of it for a snack later.

La Bonita(both locations) has been a staple of my diet for over a decade. It is absolutely fabulous. Both locations are run by the greatest family to run restaurants in this town. I can't say enough great things about them. In the many customers they see everyday..they have always taken the time to remember me and my kids..both of whom sat in high chairs at a few months old and made a huge mess of rice and beans on the La Bonita floor...always to be told that they were more than happy to clean up. This is less of a review and more of a thank you for the many years of great food and experiences. I have NEVER had anything less than great food and service. Sometimes I go to taquerias closer to my home...and they do a good job. But when I walk in La Bonita..it just feels like home. I was in there today..I got a Carnitas burrito..my GF had carnitas tacos and my son had a kids bean and cheese burrito. The carnitas were amazing. Spot on. We are slow cooked pork aficionados..eat it all over town.make it weekly...and todays was the best I had in a very very long time. No "sawdust" pork or small cubes. ..full large pulls of perfectly slow cooked pork..perfectly seasoned. I'm still in awe. And of course my son"s food was dynamite and such a great and easy option for picky kids. I have eaten pretty much the entire menu and have loved all of it. Try the posole..try the breakfast burrito or the Chilaquiles for breakfast. I really could go on and on about La Bonita..but just go there. And honestly if you don't like it there..the problem is probably you. Thanks La Bonita. See you soon.

Family run? Check. Delicious food? Check. Great service? Check! La Bonita rocks. It's consistently great and I love their atmosphere. Both locations are not lacking in anything. I do like the Greely/Killingsworth better because it's super chill. Alberta is definitely way more busy. Either way I'm set at either location. So good.

Pretty good prices and yummy food. I have tried the Garden and the Veggie Burrito and a Veggie chimichanga, all were tasty. There is fountain soda (free refills!) and a selection of jarritos and other bottled sodas. Kind of out of the way for most folks but nice for the neighborhood. A great place for vegans/ vegetarians and meat eaters to go to.

I agree that this location is better than the one on Alberta for the mere fact that it is always way less crowded and food comes out quickly. I also agree that the pickled carrots should be free, but if you order a large portion of them, you'll definitely get your money's worth (and you'll be eating them for days and days). The cheese enchilada plate (with the "spicy" (not really) green sauce is very tasty, and less obscenely large in portion size than some other menu choices. What I'd like to see is some outdoor seating because as the weather warms up, the place feels a little sauna-esque.

Although I do miss Sagittarius, the restaurant formerly in that location, I have to say that I'm glad something so yummy replaced it! I have eaten there twice, each time got the garden burrito. All sorts of great veggies, like squash and corn, along with black beans and enchilada sauce. It is addictive! The staff was friendly and working hard the whole time we were there. I like their focus on service.

I'm not a huge picky food eater, but ugh. My friend and I ate here yesterday and neither of us could finish our food. I had an enchilada and it was horribly bland, as were the rice and beans. My friend had a burrito and said it was disgusting as well. I will never be back. :(

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
