Very close to the Hilton and you could do a lot worse. Almost everything is under $20. Would I say it's a place that I would go back? I'd go there if you stayed close by and don't have a car. If you do have a car, there are a lot of food stands and interesting food places on the other side of the river.

Kind of surprised by the ratings - the sushi was amazing. I actually ordered Chicken Teriyaki for my kid and he loved it; I tasted it, and it was pretty good. Also ordered some Udon noodles to try it out, and I liked it. I went to some iconic place in Japan for udon and I'm not saying this is the same as that but it wasn't bad. On top of that, ordered some Nigiri, and it was amazing. And cheap. We went there on our last night and I was kicking myself for not finding this place earlier. I would have eaten here every day for sure. The wait staff was attentive and great - I've been to a bunch of sushi places and thought they did a great job. I don't know what folks are expecting for experience - do you want waitresses in kimonos, and sushi chefs in sumo gear?

It's downtown, kinda divey. Nothing wrong with this place, just not spectacular.

I've been going to Koji's when it was just one restaurant. Since then, I have tried all the locations but find that overall, quality and service have suffered. The only one that I'll go to now is the Tanasbourne location. Too bad it was closed for renovations on Sunday. Went to this one last night for dinner and was seated as soon as we walked in. We waited almost 15 minutes before any of the staff acknowledged us and brought over water and took our order. The food took even longer to arrive and was mediocre, with portions that were quite small. The insult to injury were the servers at the register loudly bitching about the 10% tip they were left by one of their tables and calling them "assholes" all within hearing shot of other customers. If they thought 10% was bad, I'm sure they had a lot worse to say about the 10 cents I left as a tip. I have never in my frequent dining life ever not left a tip. Not even when service was bad. The initial twinge of ickiness I felt for not tipping quickly faded as I reflected on the extremely poor service I received. They could have done nothing more to ensure I not return. Portland has many options for great Japanese food, too bad Koji's isn't one of them.

Wow, I was surprised at how bad this Koji was considering that we liked the other locations. When I had to explain to the waitress how to make the scallop nigiri spicy, I suppose that was my warning. Sushi was not good. Overall, just didn't seem fresh and my crab in the spider roll was overcooked. The chicken teriyaki was breast meat very dry. Atmosphere was strange as well. I'm staying away. I think Shigezo, around the corner, is the best bet for this part of town. I stress think since my first experience was "incomplete". I simply ordered something that I shouldn't have and didn't like it that much. But the rest of the meal was pretty good.

I go to Koji every couple of months with my co-workers for lunch. It is a great place to get really good authentic Japanese food. I have tried one of their curry dishes, a couple of their lunch combinations and several of their Donburi choices. The portions always seem to be just right and I always leave satisfied. It's a great little place in a busy part of downtown!

We went to Portland for 4th of July, and it is impossible to find any of the wonderfully reviewed Sushi place open, we call in at least to 5 different places :( half of them didn't even say that they are not open:(( It comes down to Koji and Dragonfish, and we check both of the placese out. For starter, Koji has the authentic sushi plastic model that you will see in many of the restaurtant in Japan, so we went in. The place is tiny, and it was just 4:30pm when we went in, so the server quickly greet us and let us pick where we want to sit. The bathroom is of the hotel next door, but it is really clean. The HH just kick in, and like Elena said, it is 25% off of the Bar Menu, so we tried several of their sushis (Cali.(real crab meat!, Eel and Avocado and Sea eel and sth.) and I think they tasted great. I especially like the gozila roll(Salmon, Tuna and smelt egg) from their Chief Special Rolls menu, it offers a different kind of combination of sushi, such as Hawaiian roll, Oreagon roll and other type with various seafood, the only things is, half of it include cream chesse, since when did it become a regular sushi ingredient?? We also have 3 bowls of their noddel, which I forgot the name of, but it was pretty good as well. The staffs are really knowledgeable, and answer alot of our question about the food. Sadly, it still lack something, so it's only a 3 stars, hopefully it will get better and better.

Curry! Yum. The staff was super friendly, and the rib eye curry was delightful. It comes with a great salad and I get Miso on the side. Definitely stop into this little place!

The sushi and food at this location is just okay in comparison to the other Koji locations. I recently stopped in for lunch and had a great donburi, but my friend's lunch combination was a little lack luster. I think it's sort of odd there's another Koji just a few blocks down, but whatever. I guess this one is close to entertainment venues (movie theatre, Schnitz, etc). I don't think I'd hit up this location again. I'd rather frequent because the other location on Broadway seems more lively.

I've been luck enough to meet Mr. Koji and his wife. They are lovely people, and I can't say enough about this japanese menu. They have several locations, and if I were to make one comment, it would be that their locations are decorated generally to the level of a good, but not an upscale place, nonetheless, their food constitutes the freshest sashimi, and broadest range of authentic Japanese dishes served in Portland in one location, from soups and dumplings to all forms of rolls and sashimi, please give them a try, it's so worth it.

I went here for lunch for the first time a few days ago and had the two item combo lunch plate (yakitori and Hirekatsu). Deeeeelish!!! Sad to learn that this location is closing in two weeks. :(

I'm eating this in the middle for one main reason-that I had to kill two gnats. It loses ones appetite. On a positive note, Mauro was overly friendly and made all of my items look delicious. He even made up a roll for me called Junka.

Went there for dinner. The miso soup was nothing but broth and green onions no tofu or seaweed. Edamame was eh. The Katsu Pork was good with the sauce and the gyoza was alright. I wouldn't go back here. They didn't offer anything different that would make me chose them over another Japanese place.

Decent food, decent prices. Overall not a bad place. The service wasn't really that good though. They kept forgetting that our table existed. I might go back. Not a stand out but not bad either.

This place is so conveniently located in front of the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall. We got hungry after an early martinee and wandered right into there for a bowl of hot tonkotsuramen ($7.50). It was yummy and comforting. The service was average. They had two waitpersons working and there weren't many customers. They have a plenty of seating on the ground level and downstairs.

The description for the "two-star rating" here can't describe my feelings for this place any better. I can't say that it was necessarily bad ... but it wasn't really a stand-out establishment. It has a primo location, and it's reasonably priced. But the staff was only so-so (they forgot my edamame), and not really that attentive. If I pay $2.75 for a Diet Coke, you know I'mma drink more than one glass, y'all. The food tasted good, but I'd rather go to a place where I can have an experience. And this was not that place. Another thing that kind of had me baffled was that their specials were just tucked away on a board near the bar. They weren't explained to us by the wait staff, nor were the other specials cards pointed out to us. It was just kind of odd, like, since the staff figured we had already sat down, they didn't need to try to sell their product anymore. The seating area is huge, which is a plus during the week, especially for being located right near the arts district, but I honestly don't know how full it'll get if the staff doesn't pick up the pace a bit. Overall, a total "meh" experience. I probably won't be going out of my way to return here anytime soon. Unless I have to pick between here and Blue Fin Sushi. Then you can expect my butt to be in a seat here every day of the week.

We were in PDX for the Portland International Film Festival. We were getting ready to go see a film at the Broadway Cinema next door. This was the first of two films we were seeing that night, and, as such, we wanted to grab a quick bite to eat first since it would be several hours before we would have the chance to eat again. We noticed Koji. They were in the midst of HH. We are always happy to eat Japanese. We were sold. When we walked in, there was only one empty table in the bar area. It was small and kind of in the middle of the room. A larger, much more comfortable looking table had just opened up. Without our having to say a word, a server immediately offered to clean this larger table for us. He cleared and wiped. We sat. We ordered drinks. ($3 for HH house wine!) We perused the ample menu and selected a few items to try off the bar menu -- all 25% off at HH. Our food selections were tasty. The serving sizes were generous. We were definitely fortified for our long night ahead of movie watching. What really stands out in my mind about Koji, though, is the superior service. Besides the first server who cleaned our table for us, we were waited on by another server and greeted by someone I assume to be the manager. All went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and all was to our liking. I can honestly not remember a time when I was made to feel more welcome in a restaurant and more appreciated as a customer. From the other reviews I've read on Yelp, I gather this is a fairly new establishment. I hope they stick around a while. We will definitely return the next time we are in PDX.

Certainly not the greatest sushi or service I've ever received, but hey, having a pretty good sushi restaurant right across the street from the Arlene Schnitzer? That's pretty nice. I highly recommend coming here before a show at the Schnitz, if only because the last thing you want to do before a 2 hour + performance is eat a really heavy meal. Sushi's always one of those "guilt-free, sits really well in the stomach" type meals that are best before a show, in my opinion. Plus given Koji's proximity, you can literally push it up to the last minute if need be. Pay your bill, slam your drink, and hop-skip across the street minutes before the curtain rises. Koji was good. It's not the kind of place I'm going to make a point to drive to and dine at, but if I have tickets to a show at the Schnitz I'm more than likely going to have a bite and a drink or two at Koji first.

Went here for happy hour last night. This place just opened up recently. It's wierd because there is another one only about 4 blocks down on Broadway. This space seems to work better for them I think. It used to be Oliver Twist's spot. It has an upstairs and a downstairs and connects into the office building when you go to the restroom. Their happy hour has 25% off a certain part of their menu. Lots of sushi choices mixed with ramens as well as some tempuras.. It works for what you get. They also have sake and beer happy hour prices. There is a full bar as well though their stock is somewhat limited. I wanted some local gin and they had none. The waitstaff were very helpful and attentive all the way through.

The service It is the other koji osakaya that located not far from each other. The service is OK. Nothing to complain or excited. The food I have only tried their lunch combination (salmon teriyaki and pork katsu) and it was good. I also tried the pork katsu curry and it was not as bad. I never tried sushi or any kind of noodle here. The location In downtown and not easy to park. But easy to access for people who work in downtown The atmosphere A little bit more comfortable compare to the other koji because it's more spacious.

Met some friends here for dinner last night, based in part on the positive review from Justin. Although I've written off the Weidler Koji's (after years of faithful patronage) because of a sudden drop in quality and portion size, I thought perhaps this shop might be different. I was sorely mistaken. First, I walked into this surprisingly large establishment, passing through a jet of hot air, scented with the stink of old fryer oil blasting from their kitchen ventilation outlet overhead. I then join my friends at a booth with sticky benches and a table uncomfortably wide for the space, forcing me to awkwardly squeeze my way in (and I am of medium/slender build). My friends had their sights on some happy hour prices (we arrived with 15 minutes remaining), but although we were one of only two tables in the joint, the waitress took over 15 minutes to seek us out. Then she tried to tell us that we had missed happy hour (and was rather pissed off that I insisted that no, we had not). So, we put in our order, but despite the menu saying "see wine and sake list for sake offerings, there was no list to be found. The waitress was mystified, and took another 15 minutes to return with one (during which time she came by with a wine list that, alas, featured no sake). Turns out that the cheapest bottle of sake they had was over $40! So I opted for a piping hot little pitcher of their house sake (which, I was told, they were incapable of serving at any temperature but screaming hot). Fine. Food arrives. Gyoza were very nicely cooked, but were of Costco quality - pasty and relatively tasteless. Angry dragon was very tasty, as was the rainbow roll and the spicy tuna roll. But, just like the Weilder shop, this Koji's has gone miniaturized. The rolls were barely half the size (and thus offered half the volume of ingredients) that they once were. now, I clearly understand cost control. But as a customer I would rather pay a little more than be served munchkin-sized portions. Still, I must give kudos for the flavor of the rolls. The gyoza on the other hand, I would advise against. The real pisser to this whole event though was the waitress. As she took our order she announced that she was hoping to get off her shift, but now had to stay to serve us. Her attitude deteriorated from the moment I asked to see the elusive sake list to when I asked if we could have some plates for our food (as we were sharing all our dishes), to when I had to go looking for her to ask if we might have another round of beverages. By the time we got our check and were ready to leave (busting our way through that stink-jet at the front door), she was clearly in a foul mood. If were up to me I'd have left her a dollar, just to make a point (which I'm sure would have escaped her). But my friends insisted on picking up the check, and I'm sure they rewarded her handsomely. Oh well. So, the moral of the story is that, as is the case with the Weidler Koji's, I won't be visiting this establishment again. There are far fairer fish in this city to fry.

Looking for a bite after a movie over at the Fox, we happened upon Koji. Not much on atmosphere, although it was a labor day Saturday night, so probably quieter than normal. They seem to have a jazz band as well, but not playing that night. Anyway, food was "meh": goyza average, udon average, roll average. With better places out there (Crazy Sushi in Sherwood, anyone?), no reason to return.

I have visited this particular Koji location several times since their grand opening last summer. Not only is their service exceptionally friendly, their food is the reason I continue to return. I love their HAT rolls, dragon rolls, catepillar rolls, and several other specialty rolls on their menu. Fast service and reasonably priced for their portions. The ambiance is warm and welcoming. I always ask to sit in the Tatami Room which embraces the Japanese culture. I have met both Mr. and Mrs. Koji themselves and their genuine kindness is the ultimate reason I want to return and send them business. They truly know what customer service is all about!
