Was referred here by a friend, who told me if I was looking for authentic Hawaiian Food I should try this place. It was a little out of my way, but we like trying new places. Ordered the "Teriyaki Mixed Plate" which consisted of Beef and Chicken, with one scoop Mac and Rice. The meat was literally swimming in teriyaki sauce.. Which was so salty and overpowering we didn't end up eating it. Portions were small for how much they charge and we were disappointed in the quality of the food. Won't be back anytime soon.

Absolutely amazing food, but it feels like its NEVER open! It's always so disappointing!

We have a friend that posts pictures of her food from KIG on facebook so we thought we would try it. First impression upon walking in is it is a really small place. I am assuming they do a lot of carry out. There are two tables inside, some stools along a wall where you can cram in to eat, and two tables outside the door. The guy working the cashier helped me decide what to order and was polite. We sat outside and they brought our meals out to us. The food was amazing! Best Hawaiian plate lunch I've ever had and I've been to Kauai. The mac salad was perfect and not "room temp" like another reviewer has mentioned. The teriyaki chicken , katsu chicken, and teriyaki beef were awesome. Best I've had! We will definitely be back to try more off the menu.

I feel bad writing this because the people working there were SO nice, but I feel like I should warn others. That is the WORST hawaiin food I've ever had. My husband got the steak plate and it was super fatty slices. The mac salad was like lathered in mayo or whatever the sauce is because it wasn't flavorful it just grossed us both out. My husband wouldn't even eat it and I tried because I hate wasting money, but I couldn't handle the mac salad, which is usually my favorite part. The chicken was ok, it had the skin on which I don't really like either. I wish we would have just driven a little farther and gone to the Hawaiian place across the freeway.

I am super impressed not only with the taste and quality of the food but the amount we received as well as the customer service. This is a tiny little place that I would consider a "whole in the wall" establishment. We used the as a take out catering for one of our clients graduation parties recently and everyone commented on how great the food was. The staff was super helpful and even loaded everything into my car for me, gave instructions on how to keep it all warm and were just super friendly. I must say that for the amount of food we got we didn't pay nearly what other places had quoted us. Thanks for helping make my clients day so great! Lisa Marie

This is a hole-in-the-wall, so don't expect long opening hours, great décor, plentiful seating or attentive staff. What you can expect though is some of the best Hawaiian food in this area. I am comparing the dishes to offerings from Roxy's, L&Ls and NoHo's. I vacation in Hawaii every year, and this place tides me over in-between. I normally do take-out, as there isn't much seating and the place isn't going to win any awards for atmosphere & ambience. The owner can be a little gruff, but once you get chatting with him (especially on topics about the islands), then he can be a real hoot.

First time here I was quite impressed by this place, I was not expecting much, since I have been trying other Hawaiian food places in the area, but been disappointed, but actually I really liked their food, I ordered the chicken teriyaki plate and it was really yummy, I am a fan of Lumpias so I had few Lumpias and they were really very tasty. The place is family owned and they were really nice and will do the best to make people feel as if you they are a part of the family Then the I came back recently with my neighbor, I had the Kalua pork, and the look was very good, looked juicy, and tender...on the other hand I have had this item before in Hawaii and in other places, and to my opinion it should have a richer smoky flavor and scent. It had a very plain taste, it tasted as if it had been boiled in plain water. Maybe more salt would have added to this particular dish flavor.. The mac salad was a little too drenched in dressing. We decided to share the Hungary Man Plate but beside being too pricey it had also a little too much fat and was pretty greasy, not much food in it. In general is a good menu and an OK food, will keep on trying other items and might return to change my feed-back!

Kauai Island Grill has THE best Hawaiian plate lunch I've had since moving to Oregon. I know that's a pretty ballsy statement to make and I stand behind it 100000%. Sure I've tried 808 Grinds, Ate-Oh Ate, Roxys, that place across from Uwijimaya and others I've now forgotten the names of... they were all 'eh'. What really puts KIG head and shoulders above the rest is their focus on their customers. Auntie makes you feel as if you're at mom's house grabbing a quick bite to eat. If they're catering an event for you, they'll close up shop to focus entirely on your gig (which is why I think some reviewers feel like KIG is always closed). They are an authentically small family-run business so you know they'll treat you like family and never like a dollar sign and that they run KIG for the love and passion of great food just like back home. If you're one of those folks who claim "I support local!" then add Kauai Island Grill to your list. The owners and their kids who help run the place are locals and run a deliciously honest establishment.

Fantastic food. I noticed someone else posted about their hours or availability. I know they do a lot of catering. This is because their food is fabulous !!! They cook to order. This is half of what makes them great, by the time your food is ready, your mouth is watering. True Hawaiian style. .

GARBAGE, ABSOLUTE GARBAGE: Rude owner, what a clown and an ass; FILTHY restaurant, the place hasn't been cleaned in a very long time. POOR QUALITY meats and disgusting sauces; I lived in Hawaii and have had some of the best food there, and this place IS GARBAGE. Save your money and your time.

Ordered the katsu style chicken with gravy. Gravy was average..Mac salad needs more pepper. Overall, the meal was good.

  • Kelly R.

We really enjoyed the food. I ordered the #9 Kekaha Special (teribeef, spare ribs, fried chicken, fried egg, rice & macaroni salad) and it was delicious. Had a chance to talk story with owner "Uncle" Kimo. We will definitely be back when we return to Oregon.

Ono Grindz The sweet sour spare ribs is the best I every had.. If you need your hawaiian/local food fix, this is the place. Best in the PNW!

David S. You've obviously never heard of the phrase "Island time". It's true this place is closed a lot but it's their business and they make their own hours so....relax! This place makes the best Hawaiian food. You would have to go to the source to find anything like this, believe me I lived on Maui for six years and lived off of this stuff. When I moved back to Oregon I tried every So-called Hawaiian restaurant there is and this is the only place that gets it right. The Auntie that works the counter is genuinely sweet and filled with aloha. I highly recommend the pork lau lau, but everything I've tried there is great!

If there was an option for less than a star, that's what they'd get. They're never open, over priced, and for some reason can't get a simple order correct. Don't waste your time yelpers.

    (1)
  • Justine E.

The people working there are super nice and very helpful. I would definitely come again.

    (5)
  • Christian A.

I didn't listen to the other yelpers and went here without calling. Big mistake. Even though I went during normal hours the place was closed. This shows a disrespect to the customers and will not be going back.

Very ono food! The entire family always very pleasant and nice creating conversations with me. This place reminds me of home in Hawai'i. The portions are large and they have the best mac salad I've had up here! I always get the #10 hamburger steak and chicken cutlet mix, super ono and always fills me up! Just recently had the fried noodles and it had great taste. Overall, ono food, would recommend if you need a fixing of Hawaiian food. Make sure you call before you go just to make sure they are open.

Sorry, Kauai Island Grill. Your crown as the best local food in town has been supplanted by Aiea Grill. Looking back, you were good, just not great.

I'd been meaning to try this place out for a long time and finally I stopped by and picked up some food to go. I asked the friendly woman at the register what she suggested. She was great at explaining the menu. I decided on the kalua pork plate. I took it to go. While I waited they were very nice and chatty with me. It's an extremely small place but no worries I wasn't planning on eating there. I got home and devoured my delicious food. I loved my food and the friendly staff makes me want to support a small family owned place. I will be back for sure!!

    (4)
  • Erica E.

Pretty good price for the food. They cook it right there in front if you. The mac was ok...i prefer Hawaiian Kine Bar-B Q's better. Place is kinda small and dirty feeling. Maybe they should do a lil remodling.

I love eating here I order the Kalua Pork with cabbage every time, you will be full.

Used to live in Hawaii and was searching for some food comparable to that on the islands. Tried a few other places in town but nothing seemed authentic until I came across Kauai Island Grill. Amazingly good hawaiian food at great prices. I really couldnt tell the difference between eating on the island vs. eating on the mainland. It's too bad not all the reviews on here are 5 stars. if you're looking for quality Hawaiian food, you've found it.

    (5)
  • Susannah K.

Well, I thought that the people were friendly and quick to get my food cooking. They also made my food fresh in front of me. I had the Kalua Pork plate with cabbage. I took it home and ate it. Sadly, it wasn't good. I think it is pretty hard to mess up Kalua pork and cabbage but this had a very metallic taste to it and I'm not sure why. Maybe I will return to see if something else on their menu will draw me in.

  • Paul T.

Prices have risen, portions have gotten smaller, and their hours have been shortened -- now closing most weekdays at 5 p.m...that being said, I feel that 4-stars is far more appropriate.

Their Pulled Pork with Cabbage is amazing.

I may be slightly biased with this review since my Dad loves this place, but only slightly. Every time I've been to Portland to visit, we hit this place up. I've never been disappointed. The family that runs this place is great, they know how to make real Hawaiin style drive-in food, and treat their customers very well. The food is made very well at very reasonable prices for what you get. Some of the menu items may not be for all tastes, but you can easily find something that you will surely enjoy. While I don't like poi (ground taro root), my dad loves it at this place. It's made about 1-2 fingers thick. My favorite dish here is the lau lau (butterfish, pork and chicken, seasoned & wrapped in ti and taro leaves). It is very rich and decadent. I dream of the lau laus here as my trips get closer. I'm even full on them right now, and my mouth is watering thinking of having more. If you come from the highway, you can't make a left into the parking area, so you have to turn at the light before it, then make a quick right behind the restaurant. Parking is pretty easy to get in. Once inside, there isn't a lot of room, so either get there early or get your food to go. It's worth the trip for a taste of the aloha spirit. Mahalo to the Kauai Island Grill.

  • Kristen K.

That really hit the spot. It's just the thing I was looking for in a lunch plate style place. Get there early if you want slow cooked things like pork as they were sold out when I rolled in there. No this is not a fancy place. It's a hidden gem of a mom and pop shop. Which I'll admit only makes me love it more. It was yummy and the owner is friendly.

  • Daryn S.

Way over priced 25 cents worth of rice, 35 cents worth of salad and the worst quality chicken at about 75 cents worth all said and done the charged me 10.00 with a drink. At least in Hawaii they give u what u pay for. Not to mention they act like they don't even want u there. And I don't think they have cleaned the place in years.just got finished with me so I will update post if I get food poisoning. Do not recommend if hungry.

Exhaust fan must be broken, but super smokey inside and left smelling like bbq in my hair. Hawaiian food a little too greasy.

Kauai Island Grill exemplifies your mom-and-pop-shop that you'd totally find in the islands. Located near the 26 freeway off the Murray exit, adjacent to Key West Bank, Plaid Pantry and across the street from the Home Depot, this little venue is a hidden gem! Lunch Plates: *KALUA PORK ($8.50) - I must say this has got to be the best in the suburban area. Yes I've had Roxy's down the street (side note: unfortunately Roxy's Kalua pork has become unbearably salty over the last few visits that I avoid ordering the dish). Kauai makes their Kalua with the right amount of saltiness one would need. The plate lunch is given with one scoop of mac salad (or green salad if you prefer) and one scoop of white rice. The meat is presented upon a bed of shredded cabbage. *MOCHIKO FRIED CHICKEN ($9.25) was their special of the day. I came in on a Friday afternoon to grab this dish. The chicken was golden-fried to perfection. I took this dish to-go and even when I ate it at home, the chicken was still moist, flavorful and very comforting! I had to restrain myself to not eat the whole lunch plate and leave some for dinner. But I couldn't resist and ate the whole thing! By the time dinner came around, I was still craving more of the Mochiko fried chicken. This plate lunch also came with a scoop of mac salad (or green salad if you prefer) and a scoop of white rice. Dessert: *HAUPIA ($2) came in a little fruit-cup, where six large pieces of haupia were given. It reminded me of a blend of almond-jello + a hint of coconut. It was quite delightful and refreshing. I didn't feel guilty eating this dessert after the heavy lunch plate. The family-owned resto is so genuine. They treat you like "ohana" (Ohana means family -Lilo & Stitch). Some of the employees thought I was from Hawaii (Sorry, I'm from LA!) Their walls have photographs of fam bam members and fam friends. It's nice to know how close they are with each other. I like that they support other communities in the area - they have flyers for schools and festivals in the neighborhood. FYI = - Open Tues - Sat 11-7pm (Closed Sun & Mon) - Cash & CC accepted - Seats about 4 ppl inside and another 4 ppl outside - Parking in front of Plaid Pantry and resto or side wall of Kauai Island - To avoid traffic and chaotic intersection, enter off of Science Park Drive near Home Depot I've been impressed with Kauai Island Grill. I've had L&L, Roxy's and Aiea BBQ, but none can be compared to Kauai. Even my friends from Hawaii prefer this joint than the others. Most likely I'll be a frequent flyer since this place has some delicious, comforting, Hawaiian food =)

  • Adriana A.

Best local grinds in Washington County. I absolutely prefer Kauai Island Grill over L&L, Hawaiian Kine BBQ, Roxy's, & Aiea BBQ any day. Mac salad is perfect & portions are huge. Been going here ever since they opened, our picture is even up on the wall! Aunty & Uncle always know what my husband wants to eat...the laulau plate. Always take a Mac nut pie to go since after eating a meal from there I don't have room for dessert. The only negative I have is their hours of operation. It's almost like a hit or miss on a Saturday to see if they're open. There's been several times when I'd be craving for a plate lunch from there and they're closed.

Love eating at KIG! Kalua pig and cabbage, my favorite! Also, love the family who runs it! The sweetest most gracious people you can meet. That's what I call Aloha!

  • Mark B.

I've eaten here a number of times and the food is good. Couple of things though. When are these guys open? Half the time I stop by there they are closed. They don't keep regular hours here. The other thing is the lady there is kind of grumpy. No like smile I guess. Don't ask for ice either. No ice! The Chicken Katsu w/ Gravy is killer and the mac salad is also ono. Hope you guys stay open next time I go. Lates.

  • Melissa L.

This is one of the best plate-lunch joint I've found yet in the Portland area. (Yes, I've been to Roxy's not far from here, and well, I wasn't that impressed.) I got the kalua pork & cabbage plate (shredded marinated pork mixed with chopped & sauteed cabbage) with a green salad on the side instead of mac salad. It was quick, cheap, and tasty. This place is a total hole-in-the-wall tucked in next to a Plaid Pantry, and they only have seating for 6-8 people. But, the staff were friendly and they seem to have lots of loyal regulars. [For a 5-star plate-lunch experience, head to the south end of Beavertron and check out Hapa Grill. ]

Went here for lunch with my wife and we had high expectation since reading the reviews. We dined in at a small table and looking around we noticed the place is quite grimmy and dirty. Kinda makes you wonder about the back of the shop. I ordered a side of mac to try it and it was 1/2 fozen and icy. My Moco loco was not good. I didn't like the gravy as it seems salty and not home made. I ordered fries with it and the fries were terrible. Like the cheapest fries you can buy at Winco. I ended up tossing 1/2 my meal. My wifes plate was equally bad. Won't come back. Disappointing!

New to the neighborhood, and a lover of plate lunch, I was really hoping this place would be good... I was very disappointed. The food matched the inside of this scary take out joint - very little effort was put into it. Even though it's a take-out place, it would still be nice to see a little pride in the atmosphere. There was junk everywhere, some old menu on the wall with half of the items crossed out, and a guy taking orders that was not very friendly. I could overlook all that if the food was good, but it was nothing special. There are plenty of other plate lunch places to try, so I won't be back.

    (2)
  • J B.

The staff was friendly but the food was so greasy.... Easily the worst macaroni salad I've ever had. Seems like a family restaurant, and I like to support that, but the food just wasn't good.

  • Michelle S.

Tried this place and the other Hawiian place that was across the street a few doors down from Safeway- this place is by far better. I sampled the same dish within two weeks to compare to (moco loco). The food looked and tasted better here. I will return.

I've eaten here a couple of times and its been good however I don't know how they stay in business they are never open. I've tried to go here several times (at least 6 or 7) this will be my last and I would not waste your time or at least have a back up plan...

Great food and good service. Owner even asked us how we were. The katsu was superb and rice was cooked to perfection. Great lunch deal!

In 2nd grade I had the most monster crush ever on a boy named Michael Schneider. He was gorgeous! Dark brown hair, tan skin, wanted nothing to do with me... wait, that last part wasn't awesome, but was true. I figured there was power in ignoring googly-eyed wannabe suitors or suitorettes as my case was. This was how I learned my amazing ability in middle school to ignore and alienate the boys who wanted to date me to the point where after I said yes, they wondered if we were still even dating which I later found out was NOT what you were supposed to do as boyfriend-girlfriend. Once I figured out how to behave, it was easier to keep boyfriends. Years later there was John Beckstead. John occasionally came into the library during my free period on Tuesdays and Thursdays my Sophmore year in high school to get on the computer, do some studying of his own and whatever else. I looked for him every Tuesday and Thursday and started spending extra prep time in the morning before school on my hair, makeup and wardrobe on those days just so I could try to get his attention. Fast forward 2 years - John and I break up because I'm not Mormon and he needs someone with wider birthing hips who his parents approve of. Today? Kauai Island Grill is my new love and I think I finally picked a winner. The moment I set foot in the door, the owner (Kimo) gave me a friendly "Aloha" and answered my questions about their menu. In case you have the same question, Laulau is Hawaiin for "drool all over the floor and make obscene moaning noises while eating"... okay not really but it was ridiculous and I will go on record to attribute the next 5 lbs I gain to eating too much of it. 'Cause I'm gonna! I've always had a love/ridiculous infatuation relationship with Hawaiin food ever since I tried my first bight of Kahluah Pork and traditional macaroni salad. Since I'm no longer in my twenties, I have to forgo the macaroni salad and rice, but they can pry the meat and salad out of my cold dead fingers. The meat is self explanatory and obvious - tasty cuts of meat cooked right in front of you while you wait by Gwen, the owner and their daughter (I asked Kimo if he was the owner, but he told me Gwen was and he just tries to help her and stay out of her way since she was the brains of the operation. They're adorable!). The salad is unexplainable to me. All it is is iceburg lettuce and some sort of orange dressing but... I'm in love with it. Lust. Love. Lust... I wanna eat it, okay? I'm not sure what kind of dressing they use but I think it might be sprinkled with crack. It's basic and delightful and I will have more when I go back next week. Downfall - 2 tables, very small, not the cleanest looking of all places I've been. Amount I care about downfall - what's an amount that's less than a rat's ass? Because that. See you there!

Grimy place. I mean it, its dirty... Mac salad was not the best. My chicken was really fatty Friends beef was way under cooked. Probably wont come back

Not sure what's up with the rating, but this is the best Hawaiian food, well, this side of Hawaii. The Chicken Katsu and Loco Moco are great! As is the macaroni salad, lumpia, and sticky white rice. The owners are from Kauai and there are a lot of ex-pats from the islands who eat here. It's one of the best endorsements to have.

I'd just about crawl thru 5 miles of consantine wire just to eat their crumbs.. Like many Yelpers noted, i was delighted to be received by such friendly staff. This is an in-the-fam little business, and it's obviously a happy family! Carry out service served up was super quick, even though made on the fly! The place is difficult to get to by car even though it's in a friggin' strip mall; there's no access at all from Murray Rd. And it's a tiny joint. Hopefully they'll relocate to a larger more accessible place that would be cozy to bring a group for dine-in.. As for the grinds.... Spam'n'Rice Musubi--- magnificent! A+++ Among the best I've ever tried, and believe it, I've had more than my fair share. The rice was moist and flavorful throughout! Not a dull spot anywhere! Finally someone gets it, and gets-r-done proper!!! Loco Moco--- Solid, tasty, wished there was more A- SaiMin--- Very tasty but greasy after sludge and Ramen-style noodles. C+ Will definitely be back.. Mahalo!!!

So I really want to like this place. It's close and the owners are super friendly and very helpful. However the food I had today was simply not good. For starters I am NO Hawaiian food expert and have nothing to compare it to. The flip side to that is I know what "fried" chicken should taste like and a good mac salad when I have one. I had the chicken katsu, a huge amount of food for the price. I found the chicken was moist but the batter was extremely bland. The "plum" sauce was overly salty and the flavor just didn't do it for me. The mac salad was room temperature and as another reviewer mentioned that just doesn't seem right. It had a heavy mayo taste, so the temperature and thought of curdling mayo in my gut didn't allow me to finish it. The rice was literally the only thing I finished. They get 2 stars for service and value. I would love to hear from people that are more knowledgeable about Hawaiian foods, send me a message and steer me in the right direction. Even if it's back here to try something they know reflects great Hawaiian flavors.

We ate here long ago and just recently came back when we found out they have saimin from Hamura's. The noodles are definitely good. We've been twice in the past week or so, and both times I got a loco moco. The gravy is lighter than I usually like. I like a nice dark brown gravy. But even still, the over easy eggs were perfectly cooked and the hamburger patties were very nicely done. Oh, and it was under $6. It's under their "smaller portions" part of the menu, but I'm always full afterwards. There's not much seating, but the people are very nice. Stop by and check it out.

Very good food!! Poke on Fridays is fresh and tasty! The ladies behind the counter are all pretty friendly and nice. The old man is a real grouch though....probably just hates hauoles, which if this is the case then go back to Kauai!

  • Vic V.

Have stopped by several times for a quick take out meal. I'd say this is an average Hawaiian cafe, not "great", but generally pretty good. I do really like to owners and those working here-- it's a really friendly crowd and they strike me as da kine that will become quick friends if you want. Hey-- they did have Lomi Lomi Salmon! Haven't seen that elsewhere in Portland.

Unfortunately this place has nosedived recently. You used to know what you would get. Service that was lousy, no room to sit, smoky atmosphere, and you would walk out with your clothes smelling...but your belly would be fairly sated with good authentic hawaiian food. And the best mac salad in town, hands down. BUT, the only redeeming quality of this hole in the wall, the food, has now been put on par with the rest of the dining experience. The pork katsu wasn't crispy, the kalua pork was waaay oversalted and the gravy was not far behind with sodium content. And the mac salad? Served room temp which is pretty scary all things considering. At least they didn't mess up the rice. Thought it was a fluke, so went a week later, ordered the same dishes, and had the same experience. Save yourself some time, and skip this joint and take the jaunt out to Bamboo Grove or Noho's in order to get your Hawaiian fix on. At least you can stop by Plaid Pantry next door for some alka seltzer if you don't heed my words!!

  • Eric L.

A small place hidden next to Plaid Pantry on Murray sits Kauai Island Grill. I was suggested this place for their authentic local food so of course I had to check it out. As always, I order the katsu on my first visit to get a gauge of the place. Unfortunately, I wasn't very hungry the day I visited; I just went on a whim. I ended up with a mini sized katsu plate. Eric with a mini? Yes, what is this world coming to?! The owner and workers were very friendly. It is always good to see local peeps around. So I got my katsu and was disappointed with the portion size. I know it was a mini, but it was a really mini, mini. I guess I have to get used to this but it's hard living in Hawaii your entire life and expecting HUGE portions wherever you eat. I was also disappointed with the fact that the mini didn't even come with mac salad? That was a first for me, and I've been eating plate lunches before I could even crawl! Although the portion was a bit of a disappointment, the food wasn't. If you've ever eaten at HK's near the University of Hawaii on King Street, the katsu tasted very similar to theirs. Very light and crispy. They also serve the real deal tonkatsu sauce and not that familiar sweet & sour concoction found at some plate lunch "chain" restaurant which I won't name. The rice was nice and semi-sticky the way I like it, and I can't comment on the mac salad because there was none. Overall, the food was good. I just wish the portions were larger. I'll definitely go back again and this time, I'll be going with an appetite.

I wanted to like this place. I really did. The biggest problem was that the food simply wasn't good. I don't mean "it's not sophisticated" or "it's not authentic"... I just mean that the food wasn't good. My girlfriend just came back from a week on Maui and we thought we'd enjoy a Hawaiian plate lunch as a segue from vacation back into real Portland. After discovering that the Aiea Grill was closed for Labor Day weekend, we thought we'd give Kauai Island Grill a try. We went pretty traditional and simple, ordering the kalua pork with cabbage, the pork katsu, and the locomoco (though, for the record... calling two hamburger patties, two eggs, rice and gravy a "smaller portion" is ludicrous even by Hawaiian standards!). We took our food home and dug in. It was by far the most disappointing Hawaiian food we've had. Everything - across the board - was bland and slimy. We didn't make it more than a quarter of the way through before the vague feeling of nausea overcame any semblance of hunger, so we stopped eating and ended up tossing $20 of food into the garbage, saving only the haupia in the hopes that it would prove to be too difficult to ruin. Some specifics: The katsu was flavorless and the batter was the same consistency as the pork instead of crisp. The kalua pork was okay... nothing special and VERY underseasoned, but the "best of the worst" as they say. The potato mac salad was... wait, it wasn't "potato mac salad" because there were no potatoes in it. Granted, they didn't advertise it as such, but it was like a bad bland mainland macaroni salad... not at all like the awesome Hawaiian kind. The locomoco was thoroughly overcooked; the hamburger patties were dry despite the congealed gravy clinging to them, the eggs (ordered over easy - and yes, THEY asked how we'd like them cooked) were solid and cooked hard... and everything was, yes you guessed it... underseasoned... A lot of the reviews that give this place 4 stars are comparing it to other, worse, plate lunch restaurants. I don't think that's fair. Simple food can and should be delicious on its own. I've had amazing plate lunches both in Hawaii and at the (now sadly closed) Da Kine in San Diego, and this food wasn't even close. "Authentic" doesn't automatically equal good, and while the ambiance of the place was perfect for a plate lunch, the food was simply not very good.

Eh islanders, and islanders at heart, don't be fooled, you're not going to get authentic island cooking and service anywhere in town, but from the folks at Kauai Island Grill. The plates are blalah sized, no doubt, and the service is like walking into an Island Style "Cheers". For real, when we walk in, everyone knows our name. Ono food all around and enough variety to satisfy whatever is on my family's mind for the day. Hands down, when my 'ohana and I need a hearty island style meal, we go straight to Kaua'i Island Grill.

This is the best food on the planet. I love this place. The owner and cook has some bad health problem so they are closed a lot but when they are open it is the best food around.. The place is a dump and no real seating.. I always get it to go... The pulled pork and cabbage is the very best.. I love this place and the Macaroni Salad is so outstanding it's hard to discribe. You have to try this place.. They are not the most friendly people unless your local to them but they sure know how to cook.. I'm telling you to try the pork and cabbage.. I could live on this the rest of my life...

There is a large population of ex-pat Hawaii folks here in the northwest. They come from paradise because paradise is too damned expensive and good paying jobs are scarce. Thats why you'll find so many Hawaii-themed restaurants here. I can list eight off the top of my head! At the top of the list is Kauau Island Grill. Why? Because no one, NO ONE, can do saimin like they can. Saimin is one of those unique regional dishes that makes Hawaii so special. It is basically Japanese ramen with an island twist. My Mom and Uncle used to tell me stories about making the noodles by hand for my Grandma's restaurant. At Kauai Island Grill, the noodles are the real thing -- "crinkly" in apperance with a firm bite to it. In fact, the noodles ARE FROM HAWAII! They are imported from the legendary Hamura's Saimin in Lihue, where I've had many a bowl. So, yeah, this is what saimin is like over there. Those same noodles make the fried saimin as good a noodle dish as you'll find anywhere. Very tasty and simple. The loco moco (a hambuger patty with a fried egg over white rice and doused with gravy) is heavy, fatty and oh, so comforting. Poke, which is a Hawaiian "ceviche" of fresh, marinated raw tuna is spot-on, but only eat it if it is freshly made since the tuna will get mushy quickly. Usually, it sells out before that can happen. The plate lunch is another Hawaii favorite that is unique. My favorite here is the Kekaha plate which features meltingly tender sweet-sour pork ribs. Broke da mouth, as they say. Of course, theres also Lau Lau, kalua pork and haupia (rich coconut "Jell-O") for desert. Wash it all down with guava nectar and say "Ono, brah." Two tables and a few stools at a counter -just like a real Hawaiian okazu-ya. Lastly, here's a tip for take out: If you order the saimin, have them separate the broth and the noodles so they don't go mushy on the ride home.
