A perfectly acceptable spot for an unpretentious (read: hipster-free), cheap-ass hangover breakfast. Yeah, it feels weird going into a bar at 10am on a Saturday (who am I kidding? No, it doesn't!), but their hash browns, eggs, and biscuit hit the spot. The waitress forgot my bacon, but she didn't charge me for it, and at $3.50 for the whole meal, I can't complain.

This is one of my spots as I move from one hood to the next. I usually hit this place between 6-8 on my way somewhere else. Good strong drinks, good TVs for sports, I had a hotdog there once..... it was pretty good too!

I love this place. Breakfast is great but alas the service used to be better. I will keep comming in for a while I guess but I hope things improve. All the games and great atmosphere but things have semmed to go a bit down hill as of lately.

The Jolly Rog is a dive bar. I enjoy coming here, because one, it is pirate themed, two it is close to the late night food cart pod. The food is cheap here as well, and the drinks are unusual. Bung hole anyone? I don't know what it is about this place, but I just keep on coming back.

It's kind of limited on seating, but the food and staff were good. I don't know.... I probably would check it out again.

This place has an awesome late night happy hour- the food is SUPER cheap and consistently good. $2 for 3 better-than-average bar tacos, yes please! The atmosphere is perfectly divvy and one of the less pretentious Portland bars. Also, Rob is a super friendly bartender- always greets us with a smile. I like to go early in the week when its a little slower and avoid the rowdy weekend crowd. I like a chill place to have great cheap food and a stiff drink!

A dive bar packed with sports stuff. Nice waitress and a bartender with a heavy hand. The pulled pork was nice and fairly worth of the treadmil time. Been around forever. Glad to think it'll be there next time the gang of us are for a low-key, seriously unpretentious chill spot with a heavy dash of mixed drinks.

Oh, Jolly Roger. First bar visit post smoking ban on 1/1/09. Well, not first visit to the Roger, but first visit that I didn't smoke 17 cigarettes of my own and inhale about 30 more in second hand. It was strange, I felt a little naked. HOWEVER, my group was pleasantly distracted by this screamin' deal: Sliders and Chips for $3. Hell, I don't even eat meat (they offer sloppy joes, chicken, and crabcake) but I recognize a bargain when I see one! Ok, maybe it was because this was brunch/lunch on New Year's Day and anything fried, doused in mayo and/or tarter sauce, and generally really bad for my girlish figure sounded freaking delicious. It's enough for a meal, though we'd actually already ordered and the sliders ended up just being an afterthought. I'm sure they come in a giant freezer pack of 96, but when the waitress set down that basket of cute little buns, I'm pretty sure we all oohed and ahhed a little too excitedly. Add this to the list of $3 meals available around town. Also, I do love me some pirate decor.

You know how Johnny Depp in the first Pirates of the Caribbean is a total doll to watch? He's like Keith Richards! But in pirate garb! And just thisside of being the lead singer of Lord Pompomboy and the Fey Gays? He's just a joy on the screen, right? But then there was another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and then another, and yet another in the works? And even though Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow was adorable the first few times, and still pretty cute the second few times, by the third few times you just kind of shrug and wonder what time it is. Then you blink and realize they're now on Pirates of the Caribbean 12: When Dumbo and Pirates Collide, and you're like, "Do not want." That's a trip on the Jolly Roger. Heaven help you if you show up on Sublime cover band night or reggae night. Yes, they are different nights. It's almost as perplexing and troubling as Keith Richard's last visit to the physician. But their jello shots are cheap and worlds better than the ones from the bar two blocks down down the street. I know that jello shots are hardly a barometer of any kind of success, but you're more likely to elicit a drunk reaction if you go through a couple rounds at the 'Rog. I don't know if that is a measure of success or not, either. Buy beer, not Jack Daniels. They say they have Jack Daniels specials, but I did not feel special (in a good way rather than a helmeted way) as I shelled out the 4.25 needed to cover my Jack and Coke. How can a bar called the Jolly Roger bleed its patrons dry on Jack Daniels whiskey? It is madness, I say, and Johnny Depp would agree. Because like me, he would be fine with the 'Rog for a while. But then the irie sounds of reggae music would flood his eardrums and he would realize that he and I are made for so much more.

Th' Jolly Roger ain't, as 'tis name would imply, a fantastically pirate themed bar. Instead, 'tis a solid wee dive/sports bar. Thar are plenty o' TVs t' watch, decent specials on grub every day, 'n enough tables t' crowd around wit' yer scallywags 'n 'ave a good time. Th' atmosphere be mighty laid back, 'n 'tis easy t' jus' sit back 'n enjoy yerself. Th' grub be naught special, but fits nicely into th' "cheap 'n good" category. But let's be honest, ye're nah goin' t' come t' th' Jolly Roger lookin' fer a fancy meal. Th' daily drink specials offer some affordable options, but th' mixed drinks are a bit weak 'n therefore are o'erpriced in me opinion. Obviously, ye wouldna 'ave this issue wit' th' ale selection. All in all, th' Jolly Roger be a solid wee bar that be great fer catchin' up wit' yer scallywags, grabbin' a few drinks, watchin' a game, 'n then headin' o'er t' Cartopia fer some late night snacks!

I've been in this joint a handful of times now and I have always had an above average time. It is good for hanging out watching some TV (which I don't normally care for), or playing some pool or cards (which I normally do do). I have never been in there when it's super busy, so I can always get a seat, and the people are varied - so it brings a little excitement to the mix. I always drink beer, and although there aren't too many selections, I can usually find something suitable. Overall, it's a good dive... and the music that starts up in there is a nice addition. It's not even too terribly loud, so you can still talk to the person next to you.

FUCK YEAH JOLLY ROGER. This is the perfect sports bar. I can watch 10 football games at once, and the bartenders are accommodating to putting the most popular game on the big screen with sound. And with a few exceptions, the staff is the nicest, most attentive servers in town. I frequent many a spot, but this is where I go when I need to talk to my "priest." Good group of blue collar regulars that will make you laugh and have a good time. However, the word has gotten out about this spot so I avoid Fridays and Saturdays as well as Amateur Nights at all costs. Great place to have a beer or four before hitting the Hawthorne Food Carts, just stumbling distance away.

How to sum up my Jolly Roger experience: - Laidback atmosphere. - Tons of tv screens, so you won't miss any Blazers actions. - Cheap and tasty food, love the Philly Cheese Steak... - $2 PBR for pint on Wednesdays, or be brave and order the 40oz. It comes with a bucket. - $1 JELLO SHOTS!!! - Friendly servers and bartender. - Can't quite give five stars since they are showing ESPN for Blazers game instead of our local channel, I just like Mike & Mike better. More Jello shots please!

Game 6 of kings playoffs, and claudias has it on a tiny tv. I get to the jolly roger and they set me up with a big screen tv with volume. Now that is customer service. Sure the food isnt the best, but what do i expect? The service is great and the vibe is good.

Oh, Jolly Roger! I first went to the JR about 10 years ago for a birthday party. For sure a huge dive bar...cigarette central. However, I recently moved into SE and we were looking for a sports bar to watch a game. We stopped into the JR, and it was great! No more smoking and super food deals. I think we split a happy hour order of gyros for $6 (2 sandwiches)...drinks were reasonable (well drinks $3. or $3.50, I think). PBR on tap for $2.50... We went again on a Friday...Pepperoni pizza (decent size) for $5.00. Good deal! Super service...quick and friendly Great prices! Check them out!

Everything I would expect from a bar that had skull and cross-bones on the outside of it! Pirate themes with good drink selection and bombastic salsa!!! Great place to watch a game. The bar staff was fantastic and extremely upbeat and friendly!

This was a nice discovery while on a weekend trip to Portland. We were staying nearby and noticed this place. It had good reviews so we decided to give it a try and glad we did. First and probably most important was the great service. It is not that often that you find a local bar that is very friendly to new patrons. This place does and does well. Started with a round of drinks and an order of the tots, so good...... We all had burgers which were very good and threw in a round of jello shots. All with very reasonable prices. This will be a regular stop when we visit.

Came here for Blazers game which they advertise on the outside of the building but they won't put the audio on... Makes no sense to have random football game audio but not our local team.... What!?!

Great spot for any day and happy hour , always low prices and specials, Locally owned a a great plus for portland . Niki rocks also, she's always smiley and nice ! They have a full bar, multiple beers and food. It's large and has outdoor seating which is great when it's nice outside.

This is a really good dive bar. Go here for happy hour. Food is more than acceptable, cheap and decent bar food. Drinks are fairly cheap (I dont see the hh menu so I cant say for sure since I forget) But it's friendly and divy and has a smoking area. It's dark and there's a bunch of tvs around. Perfect for burgers and beers or cocktails. I'll be back!

This is my favorite sports bar in PDX. I love the staff here, alway super nice; food is decent; there are always drink specials; live music at least once a week. There is a shit load of tvs here so you will have a view ouf your game from where ever you sit. Breakfasts are cheap, filling, and taste good! I don't think there is a singe window or lightbulb here. All the light in here comes from both the tons of TVs around and neon beer signs.

"Restaurant" is a stretch. J-Rog is one of those places you go to when you don't want to have to think about where to go. You know it won't be crowded. You know you won't have to deal with dudes that walk a little too close in the hopes of you spilling their drink, or bartenders that are too cool to make a drink, or lines of coke on the toilet seat. It's a comfort bar - cheap drinks, passable food, and gravy-soaked breakfast when you need it on a Sunday morning. Which brings me to my favorite thing about the Rog - it's a very convenient sports bar. Never empty enough to feel weird about being there on a Saturday or Sunday morning, but never so crowded that you can't get your game. I love being able to catch my own game and get another one I'm interested in on an adjacent TV. Jolly Roger - never change.

The best dive bar in the area. Food is very consistent. Prices good. Drinks great. Lots of TV screens. Fast friendly service. My favorite all day breakfast place. But lunch is also very good. A Casa DeMarco B&B recommend place!

  • Taylor B.

Really good burgers on the cheap, solid chicken wings, lots of televisions to watch sports on including a good size rear projection, entertaining bartenders, and more often than not friendly patrons. My only criticism, when the place is busy it can take a bit to get a drink or your food. This is a problem that could easily be remedied by the addition of another server. All in all, good place to watch a game and drink a few.

I walked into this place expecting a dirty bar with old crabby bastards. My girlfriend suggested we visit it because 1) it dealt with pirates, to which I am a huge fan and 2) the building is purple, which excited the girlfriend. Both good reasons, in my opinion. Boy, was I wrong. Very clean and exploding with colors from the 10 flat screens in the main room! It's as if a sports bar and a dive bar mated, and the jolly roger was their clean baby, who statistically should have been addicted to crack, or paint thinners at least. We sat down at the bar and were promptly served. I ordered the honey chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce, and my girlfriend ordered the mushroom burger. I think. Either way, the food was immaculate. This is a bar you can definitely become known by first names and stories with the bartenders and servers, a point made known as our 'tender engaged in small chatter and remembered the favorites of several at the bar. It was love at first drink for me. Though smoking is banned indoors now, that doesn't stop the folks of the jolly rogers from selling the smokes that EVERYONE is in the mood for after a few brewski's. So, to sum up my experience: Great food, great beer (go rogue, trust me.), and excellent service. I walked out of jolly roger feeling like I was more than just a beer and a wallet... I was someone they wanted to see again. Ahoy, matey.

If this is what you're after, the Jolly IS as good as it gets. I love this place. They always make me feel like Norm on Cheers. I'm not even really into sports, but they have 4 billion TVs covering the place and I get to watch a little surfing with my golf! :) My friends and I try to make it to Taco Tuesdays every week. Also REGGAE on the weekends. Love you J Ro!

I got no beef with the jolly, the drinks flow and the crowd is pleasant enough. Ive been coming here for quiz night and that's super fun. not much more to add. the staff is friendly and attentive..hrmm... it's a goo SE dive bar and look! cartopia is around the corner.

I have to agree with pretty much everything the other Yeeps stated - brightly lit, lots of TV, varied mix of people. The one thing not really mentioned was some of the 'specials'. Red Stripe (a lovely jamaican brew) for $2.50 on Saturday night, $2 domestics and $2.50 micros on Wednesdays, etc). There was a calendar on the table showing the daily drink and food specials and they all made me want to go back again. Well, that and the upcoming band schedule. The drawback to the band of course is there really isn't any dance floor. People seemed to make due by shaking their booties on the 3' x 10' strip of carpet directly in front of the band, causing the waitstaff and patrons heading to the restrooms to sort of shake and shimmy their way through. And unless you are one of the few that actually captured one of the few tables or bar stools in front of the band, you get a nice sideview of them. I will definitely come back again to try some of their food.

Alone on Thanksgiving, I went here and they gave out free turkey dinners. They were good- it even came with pumpkin pie. As for the bar itself, lots of TVs so you can't miss any sports action. Pool tables, if you're into that sort of thing. Kind of cramped seating though. But, hey, pirates!

I love this place for many reasons. We discovered it by accident after moving here. We stumbled upon it after visiting the Lucky Lab right down the street one evening. We went in mainly because of the name & the awesome sign, I won't lie to you. We automatically loved it for the amazing servers, we ordered some very tasty happy hour treats, & I love their Saucy Wenches. We've been coming back on a regular basis ever since. We thoroughly enjoy their Thursday night Eye Candy fun! I was recently sad to discover that my favorite cook who made the best mac & cheese left. I did take away 1 star because I've had ehhh experiences with 1 of the servers & I do miss my fave cook. But overall, I love this place & will continue to return on Thursday nights on a regular basis & encourage you to as well! :)

The wonderful young blonde bar tender working around 1:30 today was so fun, funny, and on top of drinks and jokes. She was what I expect out of a bar and bartender. Creating a fun and entertaining atmosphere, I will be back for sure!

YUM YUM YUM. The staff is all super sweet and helpful. The breakfast is cheap as Hell and just what you needed. Decent selection of tap beers and all the servers are knowledgeable about them. Only bad thing to say is I wish they had more vegetarian lunch and dinner options.

"FOOD POISONING CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE." "SORRY, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU." Got food poisoning from the Ruben sandwich I had during happy hour, called back after spending a day and a half in the fetal position, politely asked to have my bill refunded after stating my valid explanation, and was told by a manager...(see above). Now, I understand stuff happens, but a refund was in order. I spent more on pepto bismol and Gatorade than I did on the sandwich.

First time there on Sunday, loved it for watching football!!! GREAT service, decent food, and excellent pricing and atmosphere. Yes it's a "dive bar" but it's clean and friendly and they have several TV's for watching your favorite team. We will for sure be back!

I always come here Tuesday night after I finish my work shift next door. Rob the bartender is a great dude. Super friendly and an exceptional bartender. I always get a good vibe coming here. Very unpretentious staff (and clientele), and everyone seems to be having a good time. The place is perfectly divey without feeling grimy. Good times.

If you're a Packers fan, go here. There's a ton of Packers fans and they were all very nice. This was the closest sports bar to where we were staying. We went to watch a 49ers game. It was packed when we first got there but cleared out a little between games. We got the back section to ourselves for a while so were able to request our game on the big screen. A bunch of Niner fans joined us soon after! Wings were ok, tots were good, service was really slow, bathrooms were about what you would expect for a dive bar. The owner came out at half time and made a pretty emotional speech about how last year at this time there were only 6 people in the bar. Well, he definitely beat that this year because it was pretty full all day.

diving in to the jolly roger...aged, gloomy and old...large dive bar restaurant...feeling a bit sketch...few screens and locals along the bar...finding the locals quite friendly and making friends quickly...quite welcoming...few order of drinks...finding the restaurant section little more open...larger tables...video games and game machines for child friendly play...atmosphere still more dive bar than restaurant...full bar service and waitress...ready for drinks...hotdog order finding odd in appearance, but not bad...nice snap of the casing...warning on spicy peppers...strange radioactive neon green relish...resting and drinking with the locals...portland locals being quite generous and providing a bunch of tourists some gifts to enjoy later...

While on tour with my metalcore band, Spades And Blades, we were in Portland staying with a friend who lives only a block away from Jolly Rogers. We ended up eating and drinking here a handfull of different times over the course of a few days after some of our tour dates got cancelled. The drinks and the food are all way reasonably priced. I recommend visiting during happy hour (which is all day on Monday's) to get even more bang for your buck! The club sandwich, tacos, crows nest breakfast, and country fried steak and eggs were all excellent but the thing I absolutely LOVED here were their tater tots. Lol. Why something so simple stood out at this place, I'll never know. They just taste fantastic and they're served nice and hot! Service with a smile here, too! Every day was a different bar tender / server and each of them knew how to deliver quality customer service. Even though you'll save a few bucks with their inexpensive food and drink options, you should pass those extra dollars on to the server. Don't miss out on this dim lit, cozy, kooky, cabin-like, pirate paradise!

  • Tanner C.

I fuck with the Jolly. Nowhere in town can you get cheaper food for the quality, anywhere. They have cheap ass burger baskets for a few bucks, god damn hold on lemme just get butt naked. Never once have I been disappointed in their food. The staff there is awesome and the bartenders are great people and great hosts. It's a dive bar, but what the fuck do you want, a bidet in the bathroom and ya dick sucked? This is a not a country club. Eat some tater tots and sip on somethin'. They have all major sporting events on cable, and even have a movie night on Sundays; there's always something awesome playing. The Hawthorne food carts are right outside the door, but fuck all that poser hipster shit. Get yourself a god damned burger and a stout. Shout out to Rob and Niki, real ass individuals and great bartenders, I'm done.

Great place to see a game or just have a few drinks. Great prices, great service, solid pub food. There's a fairly large out door area with tables, although the chain link fence and asphalt sort of takes away from it a bit. It's also a great location with easy access to several other bars and a terrific food cart pod.

Another stop on the Friday of Happy Hour and this was our favorite by far. Cheap beer ($3 for cans of Shift or pints of New Belgium beers, also a special on wells) and some pretty good food. Burgers for under $5 and steak fries for around $3. They have wings and pizzas and off the menu sandwiches that our server was more than happy to inform us about. She was quite helpful. For a bar burger it was really decent. Two patties, lettuce, tomato, onions and their "Jolly Roger' sauce (Thousand Island based). The fries were more typical steak fries and could have stood to be in the fryer a bit longer. Good bar food. There were many people here, basketball games on TV and a cool atmosphere. Some pirate knick-knacks and beer signage and definitely a place I want to go back to soon. Enjoy.

  • Sylvia L.

A couple of friends and I were in town for the night and wanted to find a good place to watch the Fiesta bowl and opening PAC-12 basketball games. After going through Yelp, we decided that we couldn't pass up on decent happy hour prices and fancy pirate names so we had to come here. Drinks were decently cheap, the sausage mac n cheese was actually quite delicious, and there were free samples of s'mores and fruit loop flavored vodka. Comfort food, good drinks, and a great football game (Go Ducks!) made for a fun night even if the basketball games were disappointing. There's a good amount of TVs around, so chances are you'll be able to ask the bartender to change the channels on one of them if you're looking for something else. The place is pretty clean, and the crowd is actually quite tame regardless of if you're sitting with the older people near the bar or with the younger ones near the pinball machine.

this place isnt trying to be something it isnt. its kind of a dive. pretty good food. cheap beer. all around good prices. but the best part? the bartender always, ALWAYS serves you with a smile. the due is freakin awesome! i dont think i've ever been to a bar where the bartender is always friendly. really nice to go in and be met with a smile no matter how you're feeling. take note other bars!

After reading all the Yelp reviews, I was really excited to come here to watch the Oregon game - sounded like a nice divey sports bar, exactly what I usually look for. It's definitely divey. And I think that it's definitely the kind of place that is great to be a regular. The bartender was really fun and friendly and loved to chat with customers. It seemed like there were a lot of regulars there meeting up to watch the game and that would definitely be fun. Not so much fun to be a first time visitor though. Service was very slow and even after telling the waitresses that I was DD for the night, I still felt like they were annoyed that I wasn't ordering more drinks. Food was a little bit pricey for the quantity/quality, not impressed on that front at all. As far as sports bars go, there were tons of screens to watch games, which is great if you have multiple games to watch at once. The bartender was very friendly when we asked to change one of the screens to a different game. Overall, I'd give a better ranking if I was a regular, but as a first-time vistor, not so impressed.

Jolly Roger on Sunday nights is one of the many things I missed about Portland while I was away for the last 14 months. I'm so happy to have my Sunday nights back. I missed Rob "money" the bartender and all the other regulars. Feels good to be home. There was just no bar that could compare to Jolly Roger for me.

I would have never went here if it werent for a friend bringing me. We had a few cocktails else where and went there to get $3.50 eggs toast and hashbrowns to sober up a bit. Everything seemed very cheap. Pretty well lit and multiple tv's with different sports playing. I gave it an average rating because it isnt anything special but a nice cheap place to know about for some late night greasy food

Excellent dive bar. Good tots. Good beer selection. Stiff drinks. Many TVs. Tell the owner, if he's there, that you're a Blackhawks fan and watch his reaction. He miiiight be a bit of a Rangers fan. "Chicago IS the SECOND city!"

Jolly Rogers in SE has been my favorite bar for years. They used to have reggae, funk and soul bands play fri and sat night, but due to patrons getting high in the parking lot and not drinking at the bar, they had to stop the live music :( The GARLIC TOTS with parmesan cheese are to die for, and I've never meet someone who doesn't like 'em (Warning for the culinarily picky: They use jarred minced garlic, not fresh; but the cheese does come broiled). The drinks are $3-$4 for wells. Lots of local beers on tap. Happy hour deals are the bomb. Yummy burgers. Just overall great place. Never seen a mean bartender in this joint, although it can get really busy.

This is the kind of bar that would motivate you to move to a place this side of the 'hood. Friendly amazing bartender, strong drinks, friendly patrons, fab people watching, perpetually busy...just an all around great dive bar where all are welcome. Haven't tried the food but it looked and smelled great passing by the bar. Recommend.

I don't know why, but I thought this was a topless bar. It pleasantly surprised me that this wasn't. But I bet there are people who will disappointed to read that. It's a sports bar. We watched half a basketball game. Nice little cocktail menu of house drinks. Nothing too indie or hipster, just a local dive-ish bar. Like an indie Applebee's? They have great burgers for not-that-expensive. I think I spent $20 on two cocktails and a double burger with a big ol' basket of steak fries. Cocktail was awesome: Cream Soda = cake vodka and ginger ale. Taplist wasn't impressive but it's a sports bar. Pretty big place. Super friendly staff. They take cards. They have a menu card to create your own pirate name. Free wifi!

I 's feelin' a mite thirsty last night, so me mates and I swaggered to yon Jolly Roger for some whiskey and merriment. "What'd ya have, lass?" called the dare-to-be-damned beauty behind the bar as she pulled a tankard for a salty dog who's jerkin deep in t' shiny magic box. He grunt'd to th' wench and yelled at th' box, "Arrg! You Blazers! A curse on yer scurvy heads!" Ne'er wantin to be so acursed as't be speakin' t' boxes, I took my leave of the poor droolin' soul and ordered a mug of black stap. But, as I peer'd round the place I was a-tremble t' find t'was crawling with bewitched an' boozy chuckleheads gather'd round the box like rats round a ship's biscuit. I feared for me own sanity, but I had not th' good luck to advance ne'er a step toward my own escape. Sensin' me trepidatiousness, th' dainty bit behind the bar called me back an' said, "Never ye mind them. Those Blazers are as good as dead. This lot'll be anchored up and off to their piss pots by six bells or I'll be a forked radish." She then tickled me belly with th' fried rings of an onion an' th' wings of a buffalo. How the lass 'ad wrangled a flyin' buffalo out th' sky was beyond me, but I doubt'd not her fire an' fury. "Fill that pretty belly with grog," says she pourin' me another glass, "that's what makes th' world spin on its poles, says I" "Aye, lassie," Says I, "Let us forthwith toss a pot, twirl a can, an' drain a beaker t' the poor bucks who lost their souls to th' shiny box tonite! May they find fair winds and better days ahead!" Translation: I went to the Jolly Roger. The nice waitress gave me food and beer. Transaction complete. Success was had by all (except the Blazers).

Nice spot and cool neighborhood bar. My friend was a regular and we came in for a few beers; the servers were really nice and responsive, the beer selection was good, and we were always attended to without being harassed. It was a slower night, but there were still other people to chat with. The food was also pretty good--not the best I'd ever had, but very good for a dive bar and I had no qualms about the cleanliness of the place--it looked great. My chicken sandwich was pretty good, but was a little burnt, but tots always make up for that. I'd definitely go there again, and not just because it's stumbling distance back to my friends place, thank you very much.

A few weeks ago, Jolly Rodger was about to get a 5 star rating from me, for serving up one of the tastiest $3 burgers I've enjoyed in a long time. Their large, plentiful margaritas are affordable during happy hour and definitely do the trick. The bar is flanked in every possible swath of open wall with TVs featuring every sport imaginable, not something I particularly care about, but if you're going to be a sports bar, at least you should be decked in tvs with sports, so check mark there. Jolly Rodger has a good amount of Portland funk about it, and dirt cheap tasty burger fare with friendly servers, my only gripe, and the cause for the loss of a 5th star: NO AIRCONDITIONING!!! Well, technically they have it, but it doesn't function at all, which makes for a very unpleasant experience on a hot day...

I've got to give this place props as it is one of the most welcoming and friendliest bars in town. It's cheap, they will play the game you're interested in, and they have live reggae sans cover. Before I moved to the neighborhood I used to drive by and think "What a stupid looking place, I will probably never go in there." Well don't you love to turn a new leaf and discover something new about yourself? I do. Jolly Roger has provided me with fun memories and good times. The first time I ventured in here I walked right into the bands set (fyi they set up right in front of the door on 12th). They were real friendly about it and continued to play, no problem. Another time I came here after a very emotional and difficult day and staff was awesome and supportive. I've watched most of the Stanley Cup here and I will be going here for the World Cup. If you can get past the fact that the place is lit entirely by televisions and beer signs, you will be happy to find a diverse and friendly pub. Good happy hour, weekly deals and cheap $3 Crows Nest breakfast. The old adage is true, don't knock it until you try it.

I love this place. It is DEFINITELY a dive bar. The food is alright and the drinks are great and cheap! They also have dollar Jell-O shots. It is definitely a good place to go if you are looking to let loose, watch the game, and not take yourself too seriously. Also, random note, I once saw a lady bring her pet raccoon into this place.

The Olly Oger (the J and R light are always out) is the tits! But seriously the happy hour menu is unbeatable and the 2 dollar tacos are clearly the best. People spend far too much money at the food carts when such a gem of a dive bar is so close by.

I've driven past here for a couple years now wanting to check it out. And it's right around the corner from my favorite crepe cart, so it's really a win-win situation. We went there on a Friday night around 10 and the place was hopping. Fun booths and interior greeted us along with a friendly server. There was a live Reggae band setting up so we stuck around to hear what they were like. Aside from the band noise overtaking the entire place once they started it was a fun atmosphere. We were into talking though and couldn't be heard so we left after one drink. There's this grape drink going around and my friend ordered that and it was so yummy. I had a sip and it tasted like a grape Jolly Rancher. Service was great and the food all looked good so I'll order something next time.

It's been months since I've taken the time to write a review. Not that I've been all that busy, I simply have not been motivated to do so. That is until I recently went to a trivia night at the Jolly Rodger. I've been there twice now; each experience was a pleasant one. Conveniently located on 12th and Hawthorne. This bar has a spacious floor, TV's on every wall, ample seating and a single pool table. Very dark inside which I like. I like those bars where I feel like I can hide in a corner and not be bothered if I so choose. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. Menu is typical bar-food and the beer selection is fairly small. But the beer they do have on-tap is good. Happy hour is better than most. Tip: Try their macaroni and cheese. It's delicious and filling. The trivia night is on Wednesdays, hosted by a wonderful young lady, attracts a large crowd. A wonderful and eclectic group of nerds, business folks, hipsters and the like. I'm a fan of this place and will be returning often.

I am a fan. I used to live in the white house right behind the Jolly, so it became my 2nd home. Great drink specials, good happy hour and some of the best bartenders EVER! I moved out of the area for 3 years and the menu changed and so did a lot of the staff, but I still love going to the Jolly. It is like home. I love their bloodys and pretty much any drink you order is going to be as stiff as they come. Rob Money is and will always be my favorite bartender. My only complaint is the change in the menu. Especially the clam chowder. I don't even like clam chowder, but I LOVED theirs. Dino's special recipe I think. Bring that back and I will be a happy clam. To someone who just passes through, this may not be a special place, but it is to me. It will always be my favorite bar in all of PDX because when I step in, I am in an episode of Cheers.

So a pirate swaggers into a bar, decked out in full pirate regalia. Much to everyone in the bar's surprise, protruding from the pirate's trousers is a large steering wheel. The pirate says: "Arrr, I'll have a tall rum, ya scurvy dog!" The bartender, mustering all of his available chutzpah, says: "Sure! But do you mind my asking why you have a steering wheel on your crotch?" The pirate, considering the question, scratches his head with his hooked hand, and answers: "Arrrr, it's drivin' me nuts!" ************ Pirate jokes are sorta lame, but they have their place. The same could be said for the Jolly Roger.

My friends wanted to pick me up so I suggested here because I knew they know how to get here. Then I learned to hard way this is not the place for a female to go to alone. I walked in the back door and the bar was filled with men, and only men. Aggressive ones at that. At least half of them turned around in their bar stools to gawk at me then at their friends like, "Look a girl!" I was not dressed weird or provocatively, just seemed to be the fact that I was there. I went to the well and ordered a drink and one of them, a creepy old man, walked the entire length of the bar to tell me I should sit with them. I hastily paid for my drink and went to sit outside so my friends would see me. There were 2 girls outside who probably wanted to hide from the regulars too. I called my friend telling her to hurry up and come get me because I really felt uncomfortable. In the 15 minutes I was there 3 people asked me why I was there alone including the bartender. Whats it to them? They acted like I was some hooker looking for johns. My friends thankfully pulled up and I abandoned my drink and jumped in the car instead of having them come in for a quick one because I didn't want to subject them to those regulars. I've been here at night before and it was fun but I definitely would not come back here without a guy with me and not during Happy Hour time. I don't like all the makeovers on Bar Rescue but John Taffer hit the nail on the head in the Canyon Inn Episode-don't let your regulars intimidate new customers especially women. Maybe then that place wouldn't be such a sausage party.

The Jolly Roger is: A) A dive bar with a theme loosely based on piracy? B) An uber greasy nondescript breakfast spot? C) A reasonably cheap venue for watching sports including sunday morning? The answer is of course all of the above. The Roger was one of the first establishments I visited when I moved to Portland and for that reason it has a place in my heart. Since I have refined my portland experience I seem to never end up in the Roger anymore, lets just say that I found places that do everything the Roger does but better. The food is bar fare, but it is quite cheap (in both cost and size). Mostly I have eaten what passes for breakfast. The booze isn't a great deal, but it won't break the bank either. The coffee is pretty bad, but they bring a lot of it to you. I seem to only get stirrers with my coffee instead of spoons, and we all know that those things don't work for &*%%#. There are lots of TV's, and these TV's show sports. Sure enough during football season I will undoubtedly find myself eating a mediocre breakfast, drinking crap coffee, and wondering how I let myself end up at a place like the Roger again.

I set sail for a 3 hour tour of the Jolly Roger.. and I got (ship) wrecked and stranded, destined never to escape. This is a dive, but it is also so much more. It's a scene, but there is no specific demographic; everyone is welcome. You might see a ball game, live roots reggae, a motley assortment of people young and old grooving in the narrow hallway slash dance floor slash stage, various solicitors that know everyone inside is wasted, rastas, hipsters, people dressed up like pirates, people who look lost, grizzled bar flies including That Guy Who Should Have Been Cut Off Long Ago, and the regulars. It's a quite decent Reggae / funk / soul venue. The music is always free (I usually tip), loud, and of inconsistent quality. Fortunately for the uninitiated and hearing impaired, there is an easy litmus test: the bar is packed when the music's alright. And it's a "restaurant." I have had bad service here when it's super busy, but the staff is generally awesome and attentive. Ordering food here might not be for the weak or the people who have actually looked into the kitchen, but damn it is good, it's greasy, it's cheap and it comes out very quick. They have every fried delight you can imagine, including fried mac n' cheese. For the true divers, they even serve an incredibly cheap ($2?) breakfast until 11am. Then there's the specials. EVERYTHING is a special. Of course there's the standard 2.75 red stripe, 3.50 sailor jerry's and such on the weekends, but every day has about half a dozen drink specials. On the 25th of the month, there's a special. If a game is on, there's a special. If you bring in some ticket stub for something, you got yourself a special. One day I sat down and read the special menu to discover an entire paragraph describing the most ridiculous special I had ever heard of: If you show up on a certain Thursday at a certain Jolly "restaurant" to be announced in secret, and you happen to be wearing full pirate costume and drinking Sierra Nevadas, you get a buck off. Seems like a lot of work for a buck, but one Thursday I walked by and saw an entire ship's worth of pirates drinking Sierra Nevadas. Go figure. For some reason, my friends are particularly fond of the $5 "bung hole" special: Jager and rootbeer schnapps. It tastes as good as it sounds. See you there.

how many epileptic seizures has this place triggered? yes, yes, yes, it's bright. very distracting. like, in a casino-type way. my only real complaint is that they their logo promises "grub and grog." its' right there on the logo. so what's with not having 'effing grog? they have all kinds of other cutesy pirate-inspired drinks, and they even have a "booty mobile limo service" so why hasn't the person with the creativity to come up with that been tapped to mix something together, add some funky color and call it grog? that said, our waitress was terrific and sweet, even when I almost made her spill a beer on herself. I said almost.

Me and the family and a couple of friends went here on a Saturday night for my birthday. The main reason we went here is because they had some live Reggae music being played. The music didn't start till about 10PM (Reggae people are definitely on the graveyard shift). The place is your typical smallish bar. There are adequate wall-mounted television sets all over so you can view whatever sport you happen be interested in. There was a lot of college football highlights going on when we got there. Upon entering we were shown around and had a couple areas to pick from to accomodate the six of us. The place is pretty small with basically a U-shaped layout. We ordered drinks and food and they came quickly. One person in our party knoced over her Long Island Tea real close to my lap. I was able to avoid getting soaked just barely. The drink was quickly mopped up and replaced with no sour glances from the waiting staff. I thought the food was pretty good. I had the chile dog. It was big enough and laid in a bed of fries. The only knock I had on it was that there could have been more chile on it. I guess I was fooled by the item's name - "chile dog." Music was good and several in our party were wanting to dance. There really isn't a designated dancing area so they just kind of improvised there by the table. They were soon told to get out of the way and were shuffled off to the end of the bar near a back entrance. I guess that was OK as the dancers didn't complain. I was happy nursing several Red Stripes at the table. Later my son and I decided to take in a game of pool. The pool tables are located in one leg of the U-shaped establishment. There are two tables that are kind of close to some of the seats in that area. Well I guess the Red Stripe was having an effect on me because I got the butt-end of my pool cue a bit too close to some dude with 6-foot dreads and he bailed out of his seat. Once I realised my mistake I was all over the apology and he seemed cool with everything. Shortly after, though, his buddy, a short-haired, squatty, 30-something individual decided to sit with dangling legs on the end of the pool table on which my son and I were playing. Initially confused I asked him what was going on. I then learned that the pool cue incident had not really been closed. Through some dialogue I got him off the table and thought we were good. However, after a few more minutes of playing he was again planted back on the end of the table happily swinging his legs. Provocation red flags were in full alarm now and I had to ask him again what the deal was. I was informed that I had not adequately apologized to his Rasta friend and that he was going to physically take me out if I didn't get it done. My Red Stripe-laden mind was trying with trouble to process this. On the surface it didn't stack up since I stand around 6'3" at about 220 pounds with not a lot of fat and I was holding (the cue). This guy was about 5'9" with sort of a dumpy build. Because I am a peaceful sort of guy I got through the situation with some more dialogue with the guy. It was all very weird. Anyway, the point to this part of the review is to get a flavor for the potential of the establishment's clientele. After it was all said and done we had an OK time. The pool table incident was different but we didn't let it bother us too much. It was an interesting place but nothing set it apart from any of the other hundreds of similar places around Portland.

If you love brightly lighted bars with 17 tv screens flashing wildly at you while you listen to live reggae, then hurry on down to the Jolly Roger!!! And make haste, why don't ya!?

Staff is great, daily specials are awesome, trivia nights, live music, diverse crowd, good food, basically anything you would want in a neighborhood bar, its here at the Jolly Roger! They are even respectful and tactful to out of town fans who might be rooting against the home teams...a welcome change for this Yankee fan living in a Mariner world!!!

Good times.

Great place to see a game or just have a few drinks. Great prices, great service, solid pub food. There's a fairly large out door area with tables, although the chain link fence and asphalt sort of takes away from it a bit. It's also a great location with easy access to several other bars and a terrific food cart pod.

Enjoy.

Free wifi!

Good value for money, nice food, cheap drinks. Could use a bit more sunlight inside though.
