This is the best place ever. My ex and I used to go there almost every weekend, although these days I only get there once a month. The place is very unpretentious, and the staff are friendly. This is a perfect place to eat, relax, read the paper, converse, for hours. The bacon is thick and delicious. The seasonal scrambles are always amazing, as are the special waffle toppings. I've never had the burrito, but people say it is good. The scrapple is awesome. Secret: You can order a half waffle!

I've been here twice now and have gotten the same thing both times, the brunch salad; the second time I added a side of grilled crispy polenta. The brunch salad is fantastic! It's light and has a lot of flavor, especially because of the thick bacon bits. The polenta is great, too - lots of flavor and crispy :) What I really love about this place is that I've never waited to be seated and both times I was able to sit outside. I like the self-serve coffee and the very friendly staff. Parking is super easy, too. Good place for brunch! Enjoy!

A beautiful, breezy slice of Sunday solitude. It's sunny and the wind weaves in and out of the windows. A red brick cafe, not too crowded, a friendly host as you glide to your table and join some old friends. Take a deep breath of the cool, summery day, grab a dark, deep cup of coffee from one of the cups hung on the wall. Conversation, musings, interesting people. A plate of potatoes with gooey cheese, red salsa and sour cream appears. Delicious! To your left, a beautiful bowl of fruit with yogurt. In front of you, a delectable Mediterranean scramble with potatoes and toast. Amble out later to a scene filled with people, dogs, community, trees waving in the wind.....Was it all a dream? No, it was J and M.

Best ultimate lox bagel plate I've ever had. The staff is quite nice and there is plenty of space to feel the freedom that is SE Portland dining. Also has WiFi

Great little spot. Relaxing, but quick service. Delicious Bloody Mary. Might have even seen an important politician there. Very Portland, in the right way.

Very interesting flavors, inventive and fun. I didn't have any of their cocktails, I was here on a work day, but the descriptions sounded great. Give it a try, I will be back soon.

Helloooooo, convenient bacon breakfast pickup!! Just imagine my "Sunday morning gettin' it done" dance as we collected orders from our conference support staff, placed the order, and pranced on over for the take-out order. A snap from the convention center (~12min walk). Egg/tofu scramble - good! The special (scramble with brussel sprouts, bacon, fontina, hashbrowns, and toast) - quite good! Breakfast burrito (ok with corn toritias rather than flour - no problem!). Fruit bowl with yogurt - yumalicious. The only calamity with our breakfast experience: inconsistent bacon doling (three side orders of bacon one day = 7, while 1 order = 4 the next day...that's not right, man). Friendly staff, opens at 8am for brunch (SUPER popular spot on Saturdays), and pretty dang darn good breakfast..... WIN WIN WIN. Recommend calling ahead, but certainly a great choice for those working the convention center on those early mornings.

In a town where breakfast/brunch seems to involve planning and preparation, J & M made it easy for us to walk up and find a table. If you sit outside you may need to wait a good ten minutes before anyone notices you or get their attention. I had the J&M plate and fresh squeezed OJ. Hubs had the French toast and serve-yourself coffee (same goes for water). My favorite was the local thick and crispy bacon. I asked for a side of salsa and it was aight. Fresh but not very spicy. A few things I noticed at the bottom of their menu: cash only, 18% grat for parties of six or more, "please disable your cell phone's ring and refrain from wearing strong fragrances". Lololol Portland, you crack me up!

ATMOSPHERE: Charming inviting exterior really stands out in this seedy neighborhood. There was a floor fan in the doorway, and the floormats were shabby, so not a great first impression as I walked in. It was stuffy, as if they decided to wait until opening time to open up the windows and air the place out (this was August, so it's not as if they had to worry it would get too cool). Lots of wood and brick, huge double hung windows (nice change of pace from the ubiquitous roll-up garage doors that are so common now), crummy blue floor (probably linoleum). Tables and chairs not only mis-matched, but were low quality and beat up (e.g. a fake woodgrain laminate that's so worn and abused that it doesn't even look like wood from 15 feet away). I sat at the counter, and regretted it. Way too low, tired old seats (even some rips in the vinyl), low-grade countertop, and a weird too-high footrest that felt really awkward. A child would probably find the dimensions acceptable. Food menu was laminated (ick) but drink menu wasn't, which I found odd (the inconsistency, I mean). Overall, the theme is squandered potential. This place could be really cute with a modest makeover. Music was a medley of Grandma's favorites. Don't worry, Grandma has taste, it's not Lawrence Welk. Some big-band, some rat pack, some jazz classics. Suited them (music matched the overall vibe of the place). SERVICE: I was greeted warmly, by an older guy (I mean older for this line of work, not elderly) who seemed enthusiastic and seasoned (confident, knew what he was doing). Strangely though, there was no follow up, no "everything okay", no "can I get you anything else". Even payment was weird: after a long wait (but weekend, no big deal) I saw somebody go up to the front counter to pay the cashier, like in a Denny's, so that's when I realized that's why it was taking so long for them to take my payment. So, overall, I guess this place is almost like a order-and-pay-at-the-counter cafe, except that they do take your order at the table, and you pay when you're finished. There's nothing objectively wrong with that, but it defies expectations, so it's weird. So much of the eating-out experience is based on unspoken assumptions and conventions, and you might not give it much thought until you run into something idiosynchratic. At least my "server" did explain that coffee is self-serve, and did it in a welcoming way (like "help yourself to a cup of coffee over there, if you'd like") I strongly prefer self-serve coffee, so that pleased me. Oh, and three varieties to choose from, but one was decaf. FOOD: Cornmeal pecan waffle was fine. Pecans were baked in, which I thought was odd, and didn't look as nice as a pecan topping, but I don't care, it worked for me. I didn't really sense the cornmeal, but no problem, whatever. Ginger butter was way too strong on ginger, and grainy, so I didn't use much. I wanted some regular butter, but I understand they provide refrigerated foil-wrapped pats, which is abominable, so I didn't bother. Potatoes were...well, there was something funky about them, but kinda subtle. Seemed slightly rancid. Most likely explanation: old oil. Condiment selection was disappointing: grocery-store ketchup, tobasco, and a hot sauce that I can't recall. PRESENTATION: Coffee cups are Goodwill quality. And I'm being generous. I'm tempted to walk to Goodwill today and see if their coffee-cup selection is better than J&M's. Jam pots on counter/tables were plastic. Napkins were cheap. Otherwise okay. Plates and flatware were acceptable. PRICE/VALUE: Ouch. Nine-something for the waffle, four-something for the potatoes, two-something for coffee. So a waffle and spuds and coffee came up to $16, pre tip. Considering the food was just okay, that's a bit steep. I don't often think in these terms, but I wonder what their food cost is for waffles and potatoes and coffee. I think I just paid $3 for food, and $13 for convenience/service/ambiance/etc. Trust me, J&M's convenience/service/ambiance isn't worth $13. Oh, I just thought of something: Looking at my review of another establishment last weekend, I see I had eggs and toast and potatoes and fancy pancakes and coffee, for exactly what I paid at J&M for potatoes and a fancy waffle and coffee. There we go, that's the kind of clear objective data I needed to support my gut-level feeling that J&M is priced too high. OVERALL: In spite of all my gripes, there is a certain unique charm to this place. You might love it. Heck, I almost love it, but not quite.

Let's start with the negative: chilled pats of butter. Ok, that's enough. This is my kind of place: bottomless cups of good coffee, airy, music you can barely hear, and great french toast. Real syrup? It tasted like it. My friend and I were able to sit for over an hour and enjoy our late breakfast over conversation. The baquette french toast had a certain spicy flavor that I loved & was cooked perfectly. Terrific meal.

My wife and I went here on our way out of Portland. We were traveling on bikes, so asked if we could sit outside (table was dirty) so we could keep our eyes on them. No problem, they said! Quickly went and cleaned the table for us, and out we were in the lovely sun! Ordered some cocktails! Bloody Mary was awesome, said my wife, and my Stockholm Syndrome was amazing (which sounds weird writing... but it was Applejack, coffee, demerara syrup and Chartreuse with some obviously home whipped cream, which was the best because it wasn't sweet... just creamy!) They made a mistake in which they had to seat us inside (which ruined the point of sitting outside for our bikes -- delicate, precarious packing we didn't want to un-do). But man, I'll tell you... wonderful customer service in them doing everything they could to make it up to us. Seriously, they went well out of their way to make things right, which is worth a 5-star review alone. Oh, and their food? Amazing. Two Eggs and bacon with como-toast (haha!) and homefries. Totally filling. Nice thick bacon, too. My wife got the breakfast burrito to make up for an awful burrito we had the night before. The artfully crafted deliciousness more than washed away the night of burrito mediocrity. I believe our server's name was Sydney. She was nice. Didn't catch the gentleman's name who was so helpful with our bikes, but he was rad, too. Coffee mug tree is also great. Lovely lighting inside. Will keep coming back!

Above average for a typical local breakfast joint. The menu is scattershot and probably crafted to what the original cooks knew how to make, the "breakfast potatoes" are undercooked and overseasoned and you get your own coffee. The "be glad we let you eat our food" vibe isn't as bad as some hipster hot spots but it's definitely there. Witness the fee on split checks. But there are both waiters and hostesses/cashiers and ours were pretty pleasant. If I was in the area and too hungry to make it to Village Inn I'd stop in.

My family and I have been going the the J&M Cafe for nearly 10 years for Mother's Day breakfast. After our experience this month, none of us will EVER go back again. To set the stage, I admit my family (party of six at the time) can be a little tough to handle at times. However, I would never expect any business to treat their customers the way we were treated that day. Yes, it was Mother's Day but they really weren't that busy. As my mom was on her way with my 90-year-old Grandmother, my aunt had requested that they pushed two square-shaped tables together for us rather than two round tables. My aunt thought the square tables looked more "sturdy" and my Grandmother would feel more comfortable at them. Like I said, they were not that busy and we did see a couple square tables empty, there was no obvious reason they couldn't fill this request. They went ahead and ignored our request and sat us at the two round tables. When we made a comment about the seating, we were shocked to be confronted by the manager expressing that "we are welcome to go ahead and find someplace else to go because he's not going to play any of these games with us!" That's a quote. Super. Freakin. Catty. This was about 11am on Mother's Day in Southeast PDX so where were we going to go that wasn't jam packed? In retrospect, it makes sense that J&M was slow, because it's a bad restaurant. With that said, half of us DID want to leave. We tried to find someplace but my mom insisted we stayed and pleaded with the manager to "let" us be served there basically. I couldn't believe what he said to here.. Something along the lines of "yah, we'll give you another server as long as there won't be any other issues." He seriously gave us conditionals to be patrons of his business. J&M needs to get a really check. There are LOTS of spots popping up everywhere, like competition.. If they want to survive, whatever you call THAT, can't happen. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Went in today for a little sit down waiting on my guy to finish is "joyride" in a car around the corner. (test drive) saw the sign for lemonade and ordered on for my kid and I. since we sat around a while we ordered toast too. It was nicely done, the butter was soft so it went on nice. The jam was also lovely. Great little place.

Cute cafe hidden away by Andy and Bax/Next Adventure. I really like the space--minimalist with a coffee mug "tree" from which you can pick your mug and pour yourself some coffee. Our waiter was very nice, the place was pretty empty, and the food came quickly, which was all great. We came for brunch, and the food was OK--not great, not bad either. The bacon was really thick-cut. It was an interesting change, but I'm not sure I love it. The potatoes were just OK. The french toast and breakfast burrito were just OK too. It was really hot inside, though. And as other posters have mentioned, they have this weird ATM setup thing that is really inconvenient... come with cash.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED SO BADLY IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY IN MY LIFE. No stars AT ALL. I've been thinking about writing this review for months but I have better things to do. But today my friend and I are talking about getting breakfast and I made a joke about coming here because the last time was so terrible. SO terrible that we got 86'D YEAH... 86'D from a breakfast place in Portland HA! I've never even been 86'd from a bar... So my friend and I have been wanting to try this place (a few months ago) because I ride my bike to work and pass this spot everyday. We go in around 10am the waitress hands us menus and says wherever! Um..ok a little weird but whatever.. there was maybe 4 tables of people there so not that busy. We sit down and wait....and wait..and wait... I notice the self serve coffee, so I get up and help myself. My friend and I already knew what we wanted so he was going to tell the waiter when he came over. My friend tried to order and the waiter says "as soon as she sits down." the she being me that was filling up a mug of coffee about 4 ft away. I sit down and we are both a little uncomfortable like umm what was that about...so we continue waiting...long enough for us to share my cup of coffee and I get up for a refill..he comes swooping by again "Hi! Excuse me, can we order?" :) AS SOON AS YOU SIT DOWN. He says in a stern voice to me... OMG IS THIS GUY FOR REAL? So, I sit down and he eventually comes over.. "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" UMMMMM, Shit.. so we order very fast and there was not asking if we wanted anything to drink.. or WELCOME TO J&M HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN HERE BEFORE? OR MAYBE ANY CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL? LIKE HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS? HA, so insane. So are breakfast comes and this nice chick drops it off... we are almost done and we need boxes and to pay etc. No one comes to heck on us after we get our food. I have to put my hand up and ask loudly EXCUSE ME SIR. He doesn't even walk toward me but stands 5ft away.. I ask do we pay here or at the ccounter... "WHENEVER YOU'RE READY." ummm excuse me but do we pay here or at the counter and we need boxes...He says again "WHENEVER YOU ARE READY" but this time gets 2 ft away from my face and crouches down... ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I reacted with "You don't have to be such an ASSHOLE!" and he storms off... comes back grabs this piece of paper and says... I AM PAYING FOR YOUR TAB! Meanwhile my friend and I are like WTF and just trying to finidh our food and get the hell out of there! This guy is tall BALD AND SASSY AND apparently the OWNER according the one of the cooks that I cut his hair a few weeks ago told me. He comes back and grabs our plates from under us as we are ating and says YOU ARE 86'D DON'T EVER COME BACK. My friend and this dick are seriously playing tug of war with his breakfast plate across the table from me.. I had to laugh.. like is this SERIOUSLY HAPPENING... So we get up and my friend tells the staff this guy right here is an asshole hes treated us like shit since we got here we did nothing wrong yatta yatta yatta and took a picture of him but deleted it off his phone a couple weeks later but you get the idea tall asshole rude bald man. I have never written a review so this is obviously the truth and a waste of my time but this dude needs to go the fuck out of biz. Even your employees hate you and I hope karma bites you in the ass! HAPPY MONDAY YALL!

The Mediterranean scramble keeps me coming back week after week, month after month! A little pesto, little egg, little feta, little sundried tomato, herbs and potatoes. Fresh OJ, coffee and warm pumpkin bread are great while you wait. Only thing I wish the butter for the toast wasn't so cold because it doesn't melt on my toast. They used to be cash only but now take cards!

I stopped in on accident. There was not any clear signage on the door and it appeared closed at first. I walked in and was instantly greeted and seated. The wait staff was very nice and friendly. Tables were promptly cleaned and reset. My food came about 2 minutes after ordering and was hot and delicious. Very reasonably priced and good home made quality. I would consider this place on the Portland hipster side of general theme. I had a good experience and would come back again

Parking is a little scarce in this area of Buckman/Central Eastside around noon, but I still found a place close to J&M. I'm glad I drive a beat-up car because there were a lot of characters just standing around on the corners of nearby Ankeny and 6th. At J&M, I was greeted by painted pictures of pig faces with wings on the windows and front door. Pigs do fly, yes. It was a seat yourself operation. About half the tables were occupied. The clientele was a mix: businessmen with coats and ties, burly blue-collar workers and a woman with bright pink hair nibbling on a bacon strip. In addition to seat yourself, coffee and water were serve yourself. I liked the array of options that are on the Lunchtime Breakfast menu. I went with the Beulah May, primarily because I once had a cat named Beulah. I also requested a side of bacon and a side of toast. My order was brought out in very good time. I loved the Beulah May, which according to the menu was black-eyed peas with grits and a jicama slaw. The jicama slaw was incredibly smooth and creamy. The flavor was complex and compelling. I asked my server how the slaw was seasoned. She went back and checked with the cooks and found out that the slaw had cayenne pepper, hot sauce, celery salt, onion salt and garlic salt. Despite the three salts, I can assure you the dish was perfect and not too salty. Interestingly, the grits appeared to be to triangular shapes of polenta. It made me wonder what the difference is between grits and polenta. I used to think that grits were creamy and polenta was firm, but that they were essentially the same critter. However, my cursory research seems to indicate that the difference between grits and polenta is that with grits, the hull has been removed from the corn before it is ground. The hull is removed by treating the corn with an alkaline solution, which could be lime or lye. Is that true? In any event, J&M's toasted grits were very good. The bacon was billed as local and natural. It had a rather pork-like flavor and was just a tad too salty, but still quite decent. Though, I must say, $4.70 for two skinny strips of bacon is a little steep. I loved the jam that came with the toast. It may have just been raspberry jam, but it seemed to have been too lively and tangy to just be raspberry jam. Yum, in any case. Overall, a great breakfast lunch, and I look forward to returning.

This has been my favorite breakfast in Portland for years. Specifically, the Garden Scramble is delicious and creative (who else serves leeks and mustard greens in their breakfast?). My family and friends - including vegetarians, omnivores, and parents of small children - have all liked it, as well, and given good reviews to everything from the grits to the waffles to the bacon. And some news: they now take plastic.

Alert: They totally take credit cards now! Been coming here for years. Not as busy as it used to be, and food a shade less good in recent months. However, I like the atmosphere and the menu and am always glad to come here.

What? How this little cafe had eluded my radar for so long I have no idea. But thanks to my dining partner who suggested breakfast here, I have a new spot that I thoroughly enjoy on the inner eastside for morning meal. Everything about J&M is simple and straightforward (except the flavor of the food). The menu is short and to the point, offering a few scrambles, some breakfast entrees and other, lighter morning fare. The coffee is self-serve and the mugs are mix-n-match. The service is friendly but somewhat hands-off, which is great if you're having a meeting or engaged in a conversation. And the food? Tasty! I had the J&M plate which was an open-face english muffin topped with basted eggs then melted fontina and cheddar cheeses, then cross-topped with super thick cut bacon that was almost caramelized. Yummmm. Not light, but delicious. The only real downside is that they don't take cards. They do have this funky ATM setup in the corner where you can swipe, get a receipt, then take it to the register to pay. Fortunately the morning of my visit I was flush with Jacksons, but it would probably be cool if they just started taking cards. Also there's no wifi here. I think the goal is to just encourage breakfast and conversation and to discourage laptop zombification. On the flip side, I know some folks who would add this in to their steady breakfast meeting spot location if they could work while eating. Solid cafe - I will definitely be back!

Been stopping by every so often for 15 years. It's always the same, and that's a good thing. Love self-serve coffee. Food sometimes takes a while, but is consistently good. Great atmosphere, great close-in location, and professional service.

We heard good things about this place, so we went for breakfast one morning while we were in the neighborhood. We liked the ambience, and loved the fact that you could pick out your own mug for the self-serve coffee they had in a big thermos, but the fun stops there. The place wasn't too crowded, but our breakfast took well over a half hour to arrive at our table, and when it did the eggs were cold. When the waitress arrived to pick up our plates after we'd finished eating (she didn't check in earlier), she asked how everything was and I let her know. Didn't really expect anything, but my sister and I laughed later, and for quite a while, after hearing her comment when she came back with the check: "Sorry about the eggs. Coffee's on us." We won't be back.

It's been a while since I've eaten breakfast at J&M. It used to be one of my most favorite Eastside breakfast places. Things have changed. Today the coffee was burned and acidic. I ordered the Mediterranean Scramble - a dish I have eaten many times before. It was truly disgusting. Gone are the chunks of roasted garlic and other yummy ingredients. Now it is greasy and covered with "pesto". The main ingredient of said pesto is salt. The potatoes were burned - as in blackened - and not surprisingly dry as well. My waitress took my plate without asking me if I was finished. The no credit card policy and the $2 fee for the in-house ATM added to the overall sting. I won't go back. The toast was great.

A hidden gem. Not exactly anywhere you would expect a cafe to be as it is in an industrial part of town. I stumbled upon this place for the first time within the last year or so, but only finally got there today. It must be a hidden gem because there was no line. No line!! At 11am on a Sunday morn. The place was pretty full, but we were still able to walk in and get a table for 3 almost immediately. Lines, shmines. I like the diner feel of this restaurant. A very cool counter area off to the left that I believe I will sit at when I come back. The menu was fairly small and simple. You have your biscuits and gravy, you have your waffles and you have your eggs. They also have a few specials written on a chalkboard as you enter. My friends and I stuck with the menu. I had the Garden Scramble which consisted of roasted garlic, mushrooms, leaks and mustard greens scrambled with 3 eggs and parmesan and served with Como bread and home fries for the low low price of $8.95. Friendly service and good quality food will bring me back to the J & M Cafe.

Went here for a late breakfast. Good food, I was a little concerned it wouldn't be enough but my mess of potatoes was just the right amount of perfectly pan fried potatoes smothered in deliciousness, with a side of tasty chicken sausage. My one gripe is they don't take credit cards, but have a conveniently situated 'ATM' that will process the card and give you a receipt to take to the register to pay with or get cash back. With an extortionate fee of course. Come on guys, it's twenty-freakin-twelve, credit cards are a fact of life and there are lots of options for dealing with them that aren't a pain. Making them inconvenient to use at your establishment isn't going to make me carry cash more often, it's going to drive me to the plethora of other just as good places to eat that aren't stuck in the past in a bad way.

my friend and I went there this morning to try scrapple for the first time. I had been there years ago. Now I recall why I had not been back. Since I have no basis for comparison, I don't know if the scrapple was great or not. But the rest of the meal...toast, home fries, eggs...were barely edible. This place does not care. In addition, it is situated in a gritty, grimy industrial district. The ONLY reason it gets even 2 stars is that the service was ok. But if you are paying with a cc, you HAVE to check out at the counter. They will not settle up with you tableside. Avoid this place.

Good breakfast/lunch place you want to go back again frequently. It's "cozy" and "friendly." I've been there almost every Sunday for lunch. Recently one of our favorite servers quit, so to tell the truth I stopped going there for a while. Tried other places, but ended up coming back. Food is tasty. Not heavy like usual breakfast places. Maybe because of its portion and simple way of cooking. Health-conscious person will enjoy their food. Their specials are very good most of the time. I must say whoever thinks those specials have a very good "sense of taste." The only time I would avoid going there is on hot summer days. There is no AC and hot air stays inside. Also note that it gets super busy on some weekends (when there are some events going on in the city).

This is one of the hottest breakfast spots in my opinion, in SE Portland. Self seating and I've never had to wait. The food is excellent and the service is spot on. You better get there early on weekends if you want to get a seat. I love their scrambles and there's even a new one on the menu, which I had over the weekend. They're typically served with fried potatoes and toast. They were unable to offer a GF bread but were willing to sub it out for some corn tortillas. You can also order up the old standbys like oatmeal. I'm not sure how anyone can say the food is awful unless they were raised in a household with a gourmet chef or have only eaten at 5 star restaurants their whole life. I've never been disappointed here and would tell them if I was. This is a great place to meet friends for breakfast on a weekday morning. There's not a lot of room for large groups so I don't recommend that. Oh, and i've taken a lot of heat lately about my comments on ill-behaved children in public places so I will reserve any opinion on that for now. One last thing you have to know about is that J & M doesn't take plastic. If you're short of cash there's an ATM-like device available but I only look at it as a pain in the ass. Just try to remember to bring cash. J & M is a hit so check it out.

Why I liked J & M Cafe: - you choose your own mug from their "mug tree" -self serve coffee and water -small menu which makes deciding much easier -waitress was fast and friendly -it was quiet -the food was excellent (me: scrambled eggs and home fries, bf: waffle with fresh peaches and blueberries) What I Didn't Like: -cash only. I had to use some frustrating machine that charged me a service charge. Grrr. They should have a $10 CC minimum and accept cards.

I had a soy latte, a garden scramble and a piece of zucchini bread to keep me from getting hangry while my mom and I were waiting for my friend:) It was all quite good. I arrived early thinking I'd have to put my name on a list for brunch as it was late Sunday morning, but no wait! Maybe it doesn't get super busy because they don't serve alcohol? No bloody marys or mimosas for you morning boozers! However, if you don't mind that and you're looking for a place where you don't have to wait for brunch, I'd recommend this place!

My son and I decided to try J&M Café for breakfast last Saturday because I read a good review in the Cheap Eats section of WW. The good: Nice space. Good light. Nice mix of diners. I had eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee . The over easy eggs were huge and cooked perfectly. The toast and potatoes were alright but not special. The self-serve coffee was not that good which is a bit disappointing as this is Javalandia. My son opted for granola with yogurt and OJ. I tasted his granola which was very good and toasty. The waiter brought honey to take the edge off of the yogurt. Very nice. Thank you The bad: Paying at this place is cash or check ( yes, I said it....Check) or you can use the ATM-like procedure involving a piece of technology that is remarkably like an old school credit card machine ( it is an old school credit card machine masquerading as an ATM). Confusing, unnecessary, and it cost $2.00 for the pleasure of using the "ATM" to pay for the "cheap eats" that lured us to J&M Café. Is this "ATM" a political statement? Is J&M Café trying to stick it to the banking industry? Is the management too cheap or technophobic to get "Square". Well it just makes me not want to come back... the ATM added 12% to my tab . The conclusion: The service was good so I couldn't, in good conscience, deny a tip. So, all up, my "cheap eats" cost more than $20 for a breakfast that I can make. That ain't "cheap eats". The place isn't bad but I won't come back.

The food here at J&M was good but we will not be returning. My wife found a hair inside of her biscuit and when we told the waitress she could have cared less. Needless to say we will never be returning there.

From the "choose your own adventure" mug to offering to set up a table outside, this place fulfilled all of our hearts' brunch desires. The food was inventive, local and oh so tasty. There are 2 reasons they didn't get 5 stars: first, it's a bit loud with the high vaulted ceiling. The second is because I'm deeply uncomfortable at the moment due to the absurd amount of food I shoved into my belly. Which is also the reason I should probably give them 5 stars.

I dont make it over here as often as I like. One of my favorite breakfast places ever. Don't forget it's cash only so you don'thave to pay those high ATM fees. Nice servers and delicious food. Mess of Potatos and Cornmeal Waffle are my favorites.

In a city filled to the brim with breakfast options, you have to really strive to stand out in the crowd--especially when you make me wait in a line to be seated. I feel like the line is a little unjustified here. The space is open and airy, and while it boasts exposed beams and brick, it's not of the pretentious variety. Huge windows can be pulled open to let in the morning air on an especially nice day, and it was. I like it. You're not sitting in your neighbors lap, either. Thank god for space. We waited for about 25-30 minutes for brunch. In the scheme of things, it's not a long await. Plus they have self-serve Stumptown (but no non-dairy creamer, boo). The menu isn't robust by any means, but it gets the job done. A few scrambles. A lox plate. French toast. You get the idea. The service par for the course. It wasn't bad. It wasn't stellar. Then again, all they're really required to do is take your order and put food on your table. Drink service seems to be up to you. None of the meals were particularly "Wow, I need to eat that and change my life forever!" I ended up with the scramble special: corn, lobster mushrooms, cheese, chile verde + potatoes + toast. Simple. Thank god for the chile verde. It was good, but sorta bland sans the chile verde. The potatoes were well cooked, and a small portion. I can dig that. I don't want to waddle out of the restaurant. The payment procedure is downright retarded. Especially when you're easily spending $10 on breakfast. It's cash or check only. No cards. They have their own version of an ATM machine over on one wall. It looks so sketch and homemade. You slide your card in, and instead of giving you money, it gives you a receipt. You use THAT to pay your meal. I assume they give you the change. W T F You'll use that, but not get with the times and get a debit card machine? That's just lunacy. You're still accepting checks, too? That's just bizarre. I happened to bring my checkbook with me because I was cash-less. J&M isn't a food cart. It's an established restaurant. They serve normal food at normal prices. You're sitting out of the elements in a beautiful building. HOW THE HELL IS THERE NO DEBIT CARD MACHINE? I'm at a loss for words. Seriously though, a wait for three-star food that's cash only? No thanks.

For whatever reason, J & M is definitely one of our favorites in town for breakfast. Maybe partially because there's never much of a wait here. Every so often we'll have to wait a bit, but nothing like other Portland breakfast spots. The food has always been really good. I don't believe we've ever walked away regretting our decision to grab breakfast here. As far as the menu goes, you really can't go wrong. I always end up getting some kind of waffle or french toast. They always have really nice specials it seems like. My wife loves the Mediterranean Scramble. I'd probably say the Mediterranean Scramble is to her what Sanborn's BAMcake is to me. Also, their self-serve coffee bar is fantastic. You even get to choose your own mug from their eclectic assortment. The space is pretty neat. Good natural light from all the windows, has the traditional diner-type feel. And parking has never been an issue. Cash only, but they do have a little ATM on site (don't believe they take personal checks, I could be wrong though).

J&M is a great place. I've been a regular for 15 years and there's a reason for that. The waitstaff is friendly, the food is good and the atmosphere is open and spacious. I've never had to wait very long for a table, even on the weekends when the place is buzzing. The coffee is self-serve; pick your own mug from the cool metal mug tree (check out the full sculpture on the opposite side of the pillar!). I did like Stumptown a little more than the current brand, but it's still good joe. OJ is fresh squeezed, as is the grapefruit juice. Yum! Foodie snobs need not bother. You can spend your money elsewhere if you want eggs brushed with truffle oil and miniscule helpings of Harvard-educated bacon. The food is consistently good. Local/Southern mashup with just a touch of French nuance in some of the dishes. I usually have breakfast...order the grits! The chicken sausage is mixed with kalamatas, fennel and capers. Their bacon is really thick and off-the-charts yummy! Lox and tofu are equally delicious for the no-pig crowd. Eggs your way (except poached, and who can blame them for that?), perfect every time. Biscuits are fresh in the early morning, super delish. The Scrapple is for those who love savory and sweet together. The daily breakfast specials usually employ something interesting; exotic greens, unusual local mushrooms, feta, corn and other unexpected treats. In a recent offering yellowfoot mushrooms, brie and thick prosciutto were scrambled in a sizable portion of eggs, topped with an extremely interesting sweet pepper/tomato relish. It was incredible. Lunch is served after 11:30AM (but one can still order breakfast, check the menu). The Tuscan is one of the most amazing dishes ever and it's even vegan! The Beulah May is particularly delicious: black-eyed peas cooked to perfection with thick chunks of smoked ham, topped with grilled grits and a shaved jicama slaw that coolly balances the mild spicy kick. The salads are fresh and simple with local seasonal vegetables. All the dressings are made at the restaurant. I have a problem with all the "reviews" that dis this place because it's cash/check only. That just doesn't even make sense. The installed ATM provides an option for the cashless. There's no reason not to go here if you like consistently good food and a congenial, unpretentious atmosphere. Go J&M!

After a night out on the town, a hearty breakfast was in order and my friend recommended J&M as one of his stand-bys. I need my coffee almost immediately upon entering, so appreciated their self-serve coffee station, complete with coffee mug tree. Stumptown Coffee, well it's Portland and I was visiting, so was happy to enjoy a few cups of it. In terms of vittles, I'd definitely check the specials board up front. For me it came down to the scramble on that menu, or the crab cake Benedict, and I went with the latter. The "cakes" were crisp and flaky on the outside, moist and flavorful inside, and held up nicely to the Hollandaise. Add in an English muffin and it was like a symphony in my mouth, or perhaps more befitting of the hipster regulars there, a really good and messy Decemberists song.

Yum! This cafe has been busy every time I've been here on weekdays or weekend. That doesn't affect the friendly service or delicious breakfast. Great atmosphere, too. I usually get the special but love The Mediterranean scramble. Gluten free friendly.

J&M Cafe has a great logo: A crowned pig head with wings. The interior space is airy, pleasant and orderly, with exposed brick walls up to the second floor, which is supported by huge old-growth beams. The atmosphere is cordial and very relaxed. You serve yourself coffee and water. Despite the pig logo, one is not required to eat bacon, homemade pork chorizo, or crispy pork-cornmeal sausage glazed with maple syrup. You can deprive yourself and go with the tofu scramble, lox and bagels, or, if you just want to watch everyone else pig out, eat the ten-grain hot cereal. The different scrambles include different cheeses and are delicious. Last Saturday, the room was full, but the wait was very short. J & M Cafe is a pleasant place to start your day with a friend, a newspaper, cup of coffee and good food that someone else cooks for you. What more can you ask from a breakfast place? December, 2011

You will feel like you're in an old schoolhouse, surrounded by brick walls and big windows all around. The only thing you need is a #2 pencil. Breakfast was a delight and the service was remarkable. Upon arrival you will be greeted with a mug tree at the counter where you can choose your mug and get a hot cup of joe right there before sitting down wherever. The ease of getting your coffee yourself and choosing your seating was appreciated. I ordered the lox plate and my only complaint is that they put more salmon on that plate! I ran out of salmon on my second bagel slice which left me with a sad face as I tried to scoot the little bits of salmon on each part I tried to bite. Boo hoo... Other than that my family, whom I was with all had great looking food and it went well with great conversation on this fine, sunny, Portland day.

Shame on you peeps for complaining about cash only! Believe me I'm guilty of never having cash on me but I was on vacation so this was not a problem. Besides you should be supporting small businesses cause this is how they keep their cost down. I visited twice for breakfast during my stay in Portland. I had the Salmon & Lox plate. I could've used a little more cream cheese but I didn't mind. My second time around I had the cornmeal belgium waffle with pecans and ginger butter. It was delicious and light, granted I was hungry a few hours later but it was satisfying none the less.

There are lots of fabulous breakfast spots in Portland, however, J & M is by far my favorite. The bright, open, airy atmosphere is always inviting and they consistently turn out the most satisfying food. I frequented J & M when I lived in Portland and I still look forward to coming here when I visit. I rarely venture away from their perfect garden scramble. On the day of my departure from Portland, a group of girlfriends and I convened at J & M and I was in complete heaven to be surrounded by my favorite Portland girls while enjoying my favorite Portland breakfast. In a town that's rapidly changing, it's nice to go back to J & M and know that I'm going to get the perfect, consistent breakfast. It really is true breakfast bliss.

Why? Why did you do it? At some point between my first visit (circa 2008 and = YUMMY) and my recent visit (2010 and = absolutely CRAPPY) this place took a huge nose dive. I don't understand the motivation. The food is plain awful. I'm sorry to say this. But it's shocking. I mean, I've been here years before and it was just fine, maybe even great and now it's 2 star worthy. What the hell happened? Do we need an intervention? I still love the mug tree. It's still adorable how you make the customers get their own coffee when the place isn't all that busy; take your sweet time to take our order and then seriously....seriously, serve us that crap? I hope it's a chef thing or something. This place used to be a diamond in the rough.

I love this place. Sometimes the food is too salty or not salty enough, but that just doesn't matter really to me. The ambiance is perfect. It's laid back, welcoming and homey. I love the brick walls, wood ceiling and big open windows. And the coffee cup tree is probably my favorite aspect. They have good, comfortable food. Nothing on the menu is technically vegan but they'll gladly sub tofu for the eggs in their scrambles, which are always tasty (try the Garden scramble). And if your an omnivore they have thick cut bacon, yummy french toast and waffles and some typically awesome specials. My husband got the crab cakes special today that came with eggs, hollandaise, homefries and an english muffin (he loved it). We don't go for breakfast very often but whenever we do we go here.

I came for lunch because this place is right in between my two appointments for that day. BAD CALL! It was my first visit and will be my last. Two significant things in the service industry went wrong at this place. First, the waiter left a bill on my table when one of our order was not bring out yet. We had to follow up the "missing" item, because we were already billed for. I have over $40 billed for 3 lunch items and 3 very underwhelming house coffee (considering their dishes are pretty small, I think it was a pricey lunch). To accomodate their CASH ONLY policy, they installed an old ATM inside their cafe, but their ATM will not give you the money like any other regular ATMs. It only give you a receipt showing the amount that you have requested. You then will need to bring the receipt to the cashier, so the cashier can give you the cash that you are going to use to pay your bill. VERY inconvenience. Guess what is happening next.... my receipt was stucked inside their old machine, so I had to call the cashier and waited for her availability to open the ATM box for me. Then after she open the box and took my receipt out, she was being distracted by so many things... she made me wait in line AGAIN for the third time instead of taking care my bill right away. I can't understand how come someone could be that clueless? My time is same important as theirs; they should respect other people time, especially their customers! Plenty good restaurants in Portland, why should support poor attitude business like this one? I want to support small businesses, but too be honest.... I really don't care if this cafe is going out of business tomorrow. They don't deserve any business from me.

Breakfast for the DIY patron. The distinguishing characteristic of this quaint breakfast cafe is the fact that you do almost everything yourself. That's a good thing, by the way! Self seating, self serve coffee, and a strange payment procedure which I'll touch on later. Being a slight control freak, I appreciate the autonomy. No need to wait for the server for the coffee pot or the check. The Stumptown coffee was tasty, and the chorizo scramble was delicious and satisfying. I think my bill came in at just over $10 before tip. Also worth noting is the ample natural light that comes in through the large windows of the restaurant. It made my morning a little bit brighter which is always nice in this rainy town. About that payment procedure. When the server brings your bill, you go over to a debit card machine in the corner, swipe your card and your check is printed out. You take that check up front and pay. I don't fully understand it, but fortunately my friend who had been there before walked me through it. I can see how a first timer would be confused.

Meh... This used to be my go-to. Used to get the lox plate, back when I was omni. This is the third time since I've been vegan. I brought my own Earth Balance. Second time I've had the garden scramble with tofu. Last time it was good. This time: eh... The tofu veggie part was awash in oil and so provided a lot of moisture...which was much much needed...to deal with the potatoes... which seemed to be left over from an early early morning batch: dry-ish and chewy. I didn't finish (or to-go-wrap) them which is a BIG deal for me. This meal made me wish I'd gone to my other favorite place where the tofu is cubed in the scramble and the veggies steamed to perfection and the seasoned potatoes are moist and tender and super delicious. My companion's lox plate was good though his almost-char-toasted sesame bagel would not have made it to a guest's plate in MY home (and the server did not even offer to have it redone). The lox looked lean which was good (i.e. not stringy/chewy/tough) and not-so-good (i.e. barely enough to cover the bagel). The tomato was sliced well (thick enough) and the amount of capers and beautifully thin sliced red onion was perfect but the cream cheese seemed paltry to me. All in all a disappointment: not on my list of places to bring out-of-town guests anymore.

My friend and I ordered two bowls of their ten-grain cereal, and it took over half-an-hour for our meals to come out. Our server then charged us for more than we ordered, along with more than the dollar amount on the menu. The food was delicious, poor service. It's also cash only.

    (2)
  • Ted S.

Cash only detracts from an otherwise enjoyable, a bit above the average breakfast place. Enjoyed the food, but felt it was somewhat expensive. But the existence of an ATM machine which charged $2 for a $15 bill has turned me away from ever going there again. In these days of credit cards being accepted on smart phones for about 30 cents per transaction makes their policy crazy. And, I was worried that the ATM was a scam - no protections.

I guess I should know better than to expect authentic 'chorizo' from a non-Latino joint, but J&M's 'Chorizo Scramble' at least has some flavor (compared to the Blue Pig Cafe's yelp.com/biz/blue-pig-ca… ). But the breakfast potatoes-- my favorite kind, diced with skin and all-- were sadly undercooked and not as tasty is it looked. I really believe that the food should stand on its own. When you feel the need to douse it with hot sauce in order to add flavor, it's just not right. A big plus: Stumptown Coffee (including Decaf!) in their self-serve station, complete with a colorful variety of mugs in all shapes and sizes. (I chose one with a giraffe print this morning for no particular reason.) The food came out quickly enough, and my server was very friendly and warm. But it seemed like you had to do everything yourself in this restaurant-- you get your own coffee and/or water (and subsequent refills) and you have to pay at the cashier (versus at the table) that you wonder for what the server deserves getting a tip. For taking your order and bringing you your food? I normally tip 20% or more, but had to think twice this time. Not because my server was unfriendly, mind you, but I just feel like I did more than a customer should have to at a restaurant that has table service. I've been dying to try this place for a long time, and am glad that I finally did. But the bottom line is that the J&M can certainly satiate the body, but it does nothing for the soul.

This is my favorite week day breakfast spot. Low key industrial warm feel and the service is usually very friendly and laid back. The breakfast burrito is a usual favorite of mine and the scrambles are fab. Everything is fresh and as healthy as a well stocked breakfast plate can be. Crowd is unpretentious which is very welcoming these days in PDX. You see a little of everything and being from NYC, I love the diversity of this place. It's not NW 23 wannabe chic or urban bullshit...it just is a solid find that I love to frequent weekly. it's my weekly treat when I need a large table, free-flowing coffee (and I love choosing my coffee cup), and a nice place to do some paperwork and realize this is one of the best places to sit back and enjoy. Oh, the Monday lovely waitperson with the great smile is one of the best waitresses in town. I hear weekends are different. Too busy and not the same ambiance as the weekday experience. That's all good. I'll keep to my weekday schedule and let the masses fight it out on the weekend.

  • Boll W.

Wow! When I first remember going here I remember finding parking outside and thinking: Wow! With a wait like this, this place is more than likely memorable. Wrong. Ho hum. Another blandly seasoned Portland breakfast joint. Some places at least spice up their menu with some "chorizo" or "huevos rancheros" but I don't even recall seeing salmon on the menu anywhere. If you're looking for standard American breakfast fare, I guess this place fits the bill. I could think of better places though. Tin Shed? Cameo Cafe on 82nd? The Berlin Inn? Yeah, definitely mas sabor. You can get your eggs benedict, your two eggs and ham, your bacon and toast. But don't expect them to flavor it the most. Expect the norm and that's exactly what you'll get here. Show up on a late weekend morning and you'll get the Portland norm: a half hour wait. Me personally? I'll wait it out elsewhere.

My first dining experience in Portland. I was educated about Portland's resistance to accepting credit cards. I was also educated about the fact that fresh squeezed juice can come out of sealed bottles (more about that in my review of the Daily Cafe). Get your own coffee out of a mug of your choice from the mug tree. Quaint. Brick walls. Good art. Pumpkin bread wasn't great. And I love pumpkin everything. Breakfast was fine. Nothing spectacular. Not a lot of choices. For me, and my experience at this spot, the company was the best part.

We went to J&M's based on the lyrical review by Jenny H. and were not disappointed. Loved the mug rack. Loved the self-serve coffee and water. Loved the baguette-slices french toast. Loved the special scramble. Loved the berries on the side. Loved the hamburger key ring to the men's room. (OK, I did not love the hamburger key ring, but my son got a kick out of it.) We went on Monday, so did not face any crowds, but would have waited in a line for such a killer breakfast.

  • Serena S.

I love this place. It's almost never crowded, has a great, low-key vibe, and the food has been consistently good every time I've been there. The place itself has nice brick walls with plenty of light, always a plus in Portland. Food wise, I've had eggs each visit, just differently done. They are not greasy, and I like the selection choices, plenty of veggies and other things to add in. I hear the coffee is good (I don't drink it, so this second hand info). Service is consistently good.

My main complaint is the price to quality ratio. Nowhere near acceptable as far as I'm concerned. The food is OK, but for $10 (including tip) for a breakfast burrito, OK just doesn't cut it, especially when Perfect Day at the Saturday Farmer's Market blows them out of the water for about half that. The best value is the cranberry bread and sometimes you'll get two pieces for the price of one, if one is undersized and you get a sympathetic server.

A favorite breakfast spot. Excellent, simple meals prepared fresh. Try the J&M, heck take the whole family. This family friendly breakfast spot is one of my favorites. They prepare a simple yet surprisingly tasty set of meals. The self-serve coffee bar is one of my favorite parts. Walk right up, grab a cup off the tree and serve yourself. Grab a spoon from the clean cup and stir in just the right amount of sugar and cream. Delicious....

J&M is one of our favorites. I agree with other posters, the portions are a tad small, and the prices are a tad high, but really, the portions are healthy (as in, good for your health) and the ingredients are very high quality, so I don't mind the price. My only wish was that they had one or two more things on their brunch menu. I love the open airy space and the staff is always very friendly. The food is always delicious and flavorful. The fruit cup is excellent (not just chopped bananas and oranges). Good lox. Big thumbs down to not taking debit cards though.

We liked it - self serve coffee was good, food was really good, especially the Breakfast Meatloaf, there wasn't a long wait. The only downside was a slightly long wait for our food to arrive but it was good when it did. We liked it.

Some of my friends complain about this place versus Zell's, but I actually find the tall ceilings and customer service deal winners. Also, I hear their crabcakes (a regular special) are popular. I personally like the scrambles. It's my favorite neighborhood breakfast place, and unlike Zell's, rarely a line. I really love the wait staff too. They are all sweethearts. Beware of the chorizo scramble. It is tasty but you'll be burping nasty clouds of wonder for the entire day. I give it four stars because they don't take credit cards.

boring old American breakfast menu. nothing exciting, nothing memorable. honestly, I don't even remember what I had. I don't get it. the place was crowded as hell! (is there limited breakfast options in Portland?) loooong wait time. once we finally got a table, took foreeeever to get our food, something like 40-45 minutes for a table of 2. everyone seems to like the serve-your-coffee option. I don't. I'm tired on a Saturday morning, the last thing I want is to get up each time I want more coffee. annoying!

  • Alex T.

The food was good, but it took over half an hour to get a toasted bagel...on a Tuesday...when the place was about half full and pretty well staffed. I don't know if that's normal or not, but I wouldn't recommend going there if you have somewhere to be any time soon.

I really like this place. The waitresses are friendly and service is quick. I am a vegetarian and my husband is not and we are both happy with the breakfast menu. I love the scrambled eggs with bitter greens, however the potatoes are not the best. We are generally able to find a table pretty easily on Sunday mornings, which is a big plus. The tables are also slightly more separated than some other restaurants (i.e., Helsers), which is nice since we have a baby. I do wish J & M accepted credit cards, although there is an on-site ATM. All in all, this is a solid place for breakfast.

  • Amelia S.

This cafe is by far, my very favorite breakfast venue - and I have tried many in Portland. The first thing I love is that the coffee is self serve. We go nearly every Sunday (because after a week we desperately crave their food) and there is usually a wait, never too long but made shorter by sipping Stump Town while we wait for a table. I almost always have the same thing because it is so very good. I order the breakfast burrito with pumpkin seeds and black beans but substitute the eggs for their perfectly cooked, firm chunks of tofu. The salsa on top is so fresh tasting and the potatoes on the side, the best home fried potatoes in town. Seasoned and cooked with a crisp outside and soft inside. We are only weekly regulars but what we like to order is usually remember and we are greeted by name when we walk in. The staff is very friendly and never over the top or phony. A perfect way to start a Sunday. I can't imagine ever growing tired of this place... even after the 10 years I have been going there.

J&M...quieter than they used to be....maybe it's because the food is just mediocre, and pricey. Ordered a side of bacon and got 2 pieces for $4...that's a little much for me. Small portions, not so small price. Have to get our own drinks...so what was I paying for?

The J and M is hit and miss for me. It's consistently O.K.

This is a really good breakfast restaurant. It's not my first choice--that would be Jam's or Cup and Saucer--but it is often less crowded here and it is one of my friend's favorite restaurants so I come here a lot. It is definitely a good option to know about, because finding somewhere to eat breakfast on a Saturday morning is not always an easy task. They don't take credit cards but they do have an atm machine inside.

My favorite breakfast place in Portland. Not a huge menu. The cornmeal waffles are great. Of note... best bacon I have ever had.
