This place may not be perfect but it's perfect for me. Top selection of well curated beers, probably the best in Portland, coupled with incredible and made-with-care food from the chef right in the back, and servers who allow you to linger and enjoy yourself. People complain about the wait, but why rush when you go to a pub? I like to converse with friends and relax a bit, enjoy their company and my full plate and glass while watching other locals toss darts or enjoy a hearty laugh. The only thing I can really suggest it to order two half orders of fish & chips if you're with a bud rather than order the full version and split. Ordering two half orders gets you the same fish and chips but you get sides for each person. The daily specials look great but I've not tried any yet, too addicted to the Halibut fish & chips!

Last night I had a pint of Pliny the Elder, which is on tap regularly (and sadly goes fast!). The selling point of this place, for me, is the extensive draft selection. Always lots of interesting stuff, and always rotating. I've had a number of my favorite beers for the first time at this pub. A lot of people rav about the fish and chips. I think they're fine but I don't exactly ooh and ah. The food is typical pub grub. They have nightly dinner specials and I find that the special is typically the best thing on the menu. The historical significance of this place, and proprietor (deceased) Don Younger in particular, for the micro-brew revolution cannot be over-emphasized. Of course Don was also a chain smoker, so back in the day one could hardly breathe in the place. But since the Oregon smoking ban it's perfectly habitable. And look at those brown walls. They were white at one time (you can see in places where framed pictures have been moved. Yeah, that's a beautiful patina of nicotine. Darts. Great place to play darts. Or just hang out on a rainy Saturday or Sunday and drink beer and play cribbage. Lot's of communal seating makes it a good place to go with a group. I love this place and end up here pretty much once a week.

Great good!!! Love their scotch egg paired with homemade chips. We always go here to play darts and usually there is always a board open. Just wouldn't go on a Saturday night because they are usually full. But I like how they have several boards that are more private.

It was many moons ago, when we held our HS class reunion meetings here while trying to organize our event. We were here, because one of their bartenders worked there, or used to work there. Thinking back, I do remember they have wonderful British style pot pies, and good beer! Their staff were friendly, and I also brought my family there! I think it's time to give them another visit! Because it was moons ago, I'll update when my mind is a lot more FRESHER!

Everything is excellent. Just had the half order of fish n chips and it was perfect. My. Iffy had the burger and it was great as well. Love this place.

The best place to get a beer in town! So many different taps that are constantly rotating. Every time I come here, I find a new favorite. Their fish and chips are great, too. Love this place!!!

the service here us lackadaisical and sometimes downright rude. the selection is great-ish but the prices beg for a more pleasant experience. its like an oven in there, the smell, staff and pricing stink.

If I would have been a Yelper a couple years ago, this rating would be at least two stars lower. The service used to be horrendous. It didn't matter who I got, they each acted as if I was a pain in the ass for wanting to patron their establishment. EVERY single time. Their reviews on here reflected the same. It was so unwelcoming I actually boycotted this joint for almost a year. Those fish and chips though....I had to have them, so I decided to see if things had changed. My first stop back was much improved. Since then, we haven't had a single bad experience. Sure, the servers don't smile much, aren't over-the-top friendly, but I actually like what they've got going on. They check-in just the right number of times, offer great feedback on their selection of beers and I really enjoy coming here now. I have never eaten anything here other than the fish and chips. It's the BEST halibut I've ever had. The fish is lightly battered and perfectly cooked. The slaw is also the best I've had - love the slight kick to it. The chips are great. I love that they offer vinegar as a condiment. It wouldn't be complete without it. The beer. So.much.beer . There are so many choices, it's actually overwhelming for me. I always get the same thing for the first beer or two. If I have a third, that is usually when I try something new. Always an IPA. I hate a disappointing beer, so I stick with what I like. This is the spot if you want to try out some new beers. The ambiance is great. You definitely feel like you have been transported across the pond. It's almost always crowded here, but I have never had to wait for a table. I also never feel rushed to get out of here. It's a great spot to spend time catching up with friends. I dig this place.

This is the most authentic British pub you'll find in Portland, which means several things: A.) It's dark, B.) It has good beer, C.) The food is British, D.) The decor is awesome. Bring your buddies over to Horse Brass to order a couple of pints and forget the ailments of the working week. Don't expect gourmet food or hovering waiters. That's not what this place is about.

Love this place! The service is great, everyone is awesome that works here. It's so cozy and they always a great beer selection. Best fish and chips in town I might add.

Saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. Best decision of the weekend. They had amazing food, good beer, and lovely service. I love the variety of options available, and I was glad we stopped here for our trip through Portland. I'd love to go back someday.

Without a doubt one off the best beer selections in PDX. Dark, cozy atmosphere and somewhat traditional British food...ok, i don't go there for the food, but the Scotch eggs with mustard sauce on side are the best. Wish i could give 5 stars, but was sadly disappointed last night when after five years dining there with my kids, they were turned away with a recent change to their policy. Food carts down the street are a great treat after a pint or two.

This was an awesome British pub, which was exactly the kind of place we were looking for to finish off our night in Portland. The decor was about as random as it could be, and oddly enough it worked really well here. Nothing fancy, but also not a dive bar either. They have darts and pool available, but we mostly just wanted to grab a drink and relax. There are tons of assorted beers, both bottled and on tap. When you're traveling, you almost have to try something local. I ordered a Clem's Cream Ale from here in Portland. It was a flavorful blond ale, with a hint of oak. We had a great time, and would definitely go back if we're ever in Portland again.

Love it! My new *favourite* British pub to visit whilst in the Portland area. Not only do they feature the obligatory Guinness, Bod, Smithwicks, etc. - they also have a huge selection of draft beers from all the local craft breweries. Your typical dartboards, flatscreens, etc, are throughout. For those from LA, I'd say it's Portland's equivalent of our Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica but with a lot better beers. :) I give it a 5/5 because it is just awesome.

Amazing! But disappointed. This place is the most authentic English pub outside of England. The food is cheap and amazing, the beer is all English with local hints, as well, and as far as atmosphere goes, let me put it like this: I feel like when I walk in I'm in London. If I walked outside to find Big Ben and cars driving on the left. If you go in, try their Scotch Egg as a starter with a Bass Pale Ale and then have their Fish and Chips. They serve up there the best Fish and Chips this Anglophile has ever tasted. Now, onto the disappointment. Due to misbehaved parents bringing in their misbehaved children, the pub no longer allows minors (such as myself..) to dine in after 6, which makes it hard for people like me to eat there. REGARDLESS, this place is a MUST TRY while in Portland. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

I have been coming to this establishment for 20 years. For the last 3 years the food quality and service has become increasingly horrible. I keep going back hoping I will be treated like my business matters. My last visit was tonight. I seriously have not been treated as badly as I was tonight. The screwed up thing was I had a group of 8 friends I drug in with. Not one person in group could believe how horrible the staff treated us. We found a table off the side a dark back corner. We waited 30 minutes for an acknowledgment. The acknowledgment we received from a waiter was if you think your getting served anytime soon your kidding yourself. We said can we get a beer he said no. I thought he was kidding so I went to the bar. The bartender told me to sit down a server will be with us. We waited 15 min flagged another server down and she said bothering us will not get you served any sooner. Needless to say we took our group and left. I have been a server in a very busy restaurant and bar and never have I been this rude. I am a business owner and would never take customers for granted. Goodby Horse Brass there are 100 new bars opening up in and around your area that will be glad to have my business!

Although it can get loud on busy nights, I'm a big fan of Horse Brass. Comfortable pub atmosphere, perfect for all beer lovers. Grab a pint from their decent draft selection, throw some darts with friends...or just kick back and people watch, as you're bound to find a good cross section of Portland folks doing the same thing. Pretty good food too....meat pies, fish and chips...great cold weather fare. Cheers!

This place used to do a full English breakfast on weekends until noon. No longer. I don't think their website ever said anything about it when they actually WERE doing it, so let me just reiterate: if you want a full English, do not go here. They do not have it. Horse Brass = NO BREAKFAST. You want beans, sausage, eggs, fried toast and beer for breakfast? TOO BAD. You can only have beer. The fish and chips are authentic. Read: VERY GREASY. They have an amazing selection of beers on tap, so if that's what you're after, you'll probably be happy here. However, the food makes me sad, so just 3 stars. Also, they no longer open at 9am like their website says. They open at 11. Their website is full of lies, so you should try to call ahead and double-check if you want to visit in the morning. I tried calling, but got a busy signal over and over again after I tried calling. HORSE BRASS: FIX YOUR PHONE. Also, bring back the full English. Their excuse for no longer offering it: only 6 people got it since they started offering it. Well, maybe that's because you never put a damn thing about it on your online menu? If you tried a little thing called "advertising" or "providing basic information on your website" you may have sold a few more.

All I can say is... wow. Horse Brass Pub has a fantastic beer selection, and a great vibe. I came here with some friends for a late-night jaunt in SE PDX. I wish we had come in earlier, because I could have stayed for quite a bit longer. I ended up having a local ESB that was on cask. It was smooth and delicious. I would have loved to try about 20 of their other beers, but I'm only one man. I suppose it's a reason to come back. I'd like to give a shout out (or is that a Yelp out?) to the great service at Horse Brass Pub as well. Our server (I've forgotten her name) was great. Warm, personable, helpful. After a couple not-so-great customer service experiences in Portland over the weekend, it was great to know that there are still real people around.

Authentic? Well... Don't get me wrong, this is a great place with good ambiance, and I highly recommend it. The service we had was excellent and the waiter congenially sparred with my questions and comments, remaining in good humor, while my poor wife was embarrassed to death. We saw none of the bad (actually awful) food and service of some of the other reviews. The food was very good for Pub fare, not high caliber, some microwave stuff, but tasty and above par for pub grub. Their ever changing selection of over 50 craft beers and ciders is superb, and the few I had were very good. However, their web URL and home page states, "If it were any more authentic, you'd need a passport" Really? The décor and ambiance, sure, but what about their food? Let's take a look. First, let's omit discussion of beer temperature. If they tried to serve the warmer English beer in the US, they could not stay in business. Likewise for local beer vs. English (completely impractical). When ordering, I asked our waiter these questions: do you have scrumpy? No! Do you have mushy peas? No! What kind of batter do you have on your fish? Beer batter! Do you have malt vinegar? Yes! What kind? Sarson's. OK, we ordered from their excellent selection of craft beer and cider (alas, no scrumpy), Fish and Chips and one of their pasties, the Bridie The F&C came with Cole slaw in lieu of mushy peas. The fish was good in spite of the soft beer batter. Good English style fish has a thin and crispy batter akin to Long John Silver's in the US. A picture from a third generation operated F&C shop in England is attached for your interest, complete with mushy peas. They made the top 60 of 10,500 fish shops of the year, and hope for the top 10 next year. If you are in England, stop by Pisces Fish Shop in Thrapston. At Horse Brass, the "chips" were cut right, thick square cross section, but a little off top caliber, being somewhat soft and discolored. The Cole slaw had a sharp horseradish bite to it which I liked very much, but may be too strong for most. Slaw is not the authentic norm. It can be found occasionally, but never with horseradish. The pasty was covered with gravy. For those of you who know pasties, gravy is a sacrilege. Sure gravy is out there, even (yuck) ketchup. However, among aficionados both are considered weird. I do admit, however, that it tasted very good. Another fault with authenticity: they use the American spelling "pastie" instead of the British spelling "pasty." Pasties, the national dish of Cornwall, originated as a mainstay of workers in the tin mines. Pasties were an oval semi circle with a large fringe crust on the curved portion specially crimped. The classic pasty is large (around 14 oz) and filled with diced meat, sliced potato and onion, but historically they were filled with most anything. There were jokes about that at the time. e.g. The devil was afraid to go down to Cornwall because he might end up in a pasty. Often they had a jam or other sweet in one corner for dessert, and the owner's initials were carved on the surface. For lunch, the miners, with toxic hands, would hold the pasty by the large fringe crust, eat the internals then throw the contaminated edge away: a pretty neat package. There was and is no place for gravy in an authentic pasty. So let's come up with some equations: No scrumpy equals authentic equals no big deal. Many pups do not offer scrumpy. No mushy peas equals authentic equals missed the boat. Beer batter fish equals authentic equals yuck. Pasties with gravy equals authentic equals weird. Let's finish on a couple positive notes. Sarson's malt vinegar equals authentic equals A++. It is the best you can get: likewise for their real, 20 oz Imperial, pints. I took 1/2 star off for food quality and 1/2 star for food authenticity. Big plus for the ambiance, big plus for the beer and cider selection and plus for the service. Hope you don't run into anything awful. Kingwood Bob

It's so strange that they manage to be so downright sour after so many years. Consistently snarly and insulting. I don't like my job either man, who wouldn't want to spend all you time doing what you really want to be doing, but that's no reason to treat people so poorly.

I've yet to travel to England or Ireland but my friends who have tell me this is pretty close to the real thing. So I was happy to help celebrate a friend's birthday over Fish n Chips and a pint. Actually I had a Ginger Beer but most of the folks in our party of 12 enjoyed their Beer in the form of Stouts recommended by our server. This is a place you go for to enjoy the atmosphere, the food is well priced and hearty and the selection of well thought out beers. By the way a half order of Fish n Chips is plenty for one person.

Best little Pub to get good beer, great scotch egg, and the most scrumptious fish and chips with horseradish coleslaw!! I just wish this place had an outdoor seating area, being that it is almost summer. Something to be said about a nice cold beer, bar food and the sunshine! This English tavern is bloody dark, which is great for vampires and winter time, but us portlanders like us some sunshine when we can. With all that said, hell, I'd still go here for fish and chips in the summer time!

Beer - selection is awesome. I had an absolutely delicious Helles. Out of this world. $6.75 per pint but so good. Food - so so good. Seems pretty authentic. I had the Bridie (essentially a pastry with ground beef and onions covered in this perfectly balanced brown gravy). I also tried my partner's 1/2 order of the fish and chips which was great. The crusty bread is awesome too. Service - kind folks. VERY slow tonight (Thursday night). Took about 15 minutes for the waiter to realize we were there and to come over. Took another 10 to get our beer. Our food came quickly, which was nice. All in all: great place. Kinda spendy. Not a good choice if you're in a rush or like me and get hangry.

Not much can be said about this place that hasn't been said already: Perpetually fantastic beer list, exemplary British cuisine, authentic english pub ambiance...and unbelievably bad service. It must be either a prerequisite to get a job here or part of the new hire orientation to treat customers as if you are doing them a favor by serving them. I have been here several times, and never received better than below-average service. Add to that their silly $1 taster pricing and hard-line refusal to let you taste limited pour beers and they make it hard to love coming back.

Order their lunch special-Trish in the Kitchen is an amazing talent. Food is pub fare, but they offer some nice specials. I normally would come to have a pint or two for a work event, but never really ate here. The most memorable meal-Thanksgiving week-day before Thxgiving, they put out this turkey plate that was incredible. Just like you'd have with your family and friends on Thxgiving. Beer selection outstanding. Dennis is a fun bartender during the day. Good character. Too bad they let kids in here, it's not really ideal for families.

The worst bar experience ever. There on a cold Thursday night. Kinda busy. Meet up with my friends and say hi for a few minutes. No waitress in sight, so I walk up to the bar to get a drink. Informed by the person behind the bar, that he'd only get me a drink if I'm sitting at the bar. That seems a little strange considering its a bar. "Really?" I ask... He then tries to stare me down and explain that's how the waitresses make their money. I understand the concept of a bar and how tipping works, but find it strange that I can't get a drink if I would like through one of the various channels at the establishment designed to do just that; get people who'd like a drink, a drink. Most places I've worked and frequented pooled tips for this exact reason. The point is to get drinks out to people as fast and as friendly as possible so that to keep them happy and tipping. They have it all wrong. Attitude, poorly run, stressed out workers who can't do there job and then point the finger at the customer for wanting a drink. Congrats. GFY.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few decades, you already know that the Horse Brass Pub is one of the best in the nation due to their extensive selection of beers, some only available here. Also, you are probably aware of their consistently-good traditional English pub grub (alas, the french fries are also prepared in the traditional single-fry English/German manner as opposed to the much better twice-fried pommes frites method). But you may not be aware of their $8.95-$9.95 Daily Specials ( horsebrass.com/food/dail… ). So far, I've had the steak, shepherds pie, fish tacos, bbq beef, and roast beef, all very good and large plates of food. So when scheduling a future visit, be sure to check out their web site to get a lead on the Daily Special.

Some of the finest fish and chips in Oregon, my opinion. The service has been a little hit or miss but, overall, it's sufficient.

Not sure if the food is not good, or British food is supposed to taste like this. Went hungry and ordered both pot pies, bridie, and a couple of sausage rolls. The food here reminds me of bedding an ugly girl. At first, your desperate and it looks appealing. When your done, you look at whats left and instantly regret what you've done. With that said, the sausage rolls were delicious. Sausages wrapped in a croissant... GENIUS. Ambiance is great, service is great, and booze for days.

Weird, that I don't remember being here a couple years ago. But, as soon as I stepped in, I remembered being there. There were 5 of us on a Saturday night. It was pretty packed in there. I was worried, that we weren't going to be served right away, but we were served pretty quickly. I had the fish 'n chips, and the half size order was great. I tried the meat pie, which was just okay. I tried my sister's salad, and took a bite out of my other sister's burger. I'd say, I got the best thing on the menu. Fish 'n chips! It's halibut too, which was delicious! This place would probably be fun if I were still 21!

This place is incredible. I'd heard nothing but the best about it, and it has been on my long list of places to try for quite some time. Their selection of beers is world-class. Their staff seemed courteous and knowledgeable. My chicken pot pie was, admittedly, on the upper edge of mediocre, but tasty nonetheless. I went in the middle of the afternoon, and it was fairly empty. Most of the patrons were grabbing a late lunch, or quietly reading with a beer. I'm sure this place heats up at night and I'm looking forward to trying them again, but this place is already gaining footing on my list of favorite bars.

It really hurts me to only give this place three stars. I used to love the Brass. The beer selection is always large and well-chosen - lots of IPAs, which made my hophead happy. They had great, if slightly expensive, pub food when you were looking to really bomb your gut. The fish and chips were and are some of the best in town. And I will always remember the good times I had there with a couple rounds of beer and a cigar with my buddies (smoking ban fail!). However I just cannot overlook the consistently and, one might find cause to think purposely, bad service. It's one thing on a busy night when there's not an empty seat in the house and you can barely hear yourself over the din and service is a bit slow. That I get. But I have on more than one occasion waited 15 minutes or more just to see my server with fewer than 5 customers total in the place. I seriously wonder if the servers here even realize they rely on tips. I wonder if the rapidly inflating prices (seriously, 6+ bucks a pint?) are actually just a tax whereby the additional income for their servers that would ordinarily come from tips is figured into the price so the service can be consistently gruff and inattentive. Perhaps that's meant to be part of the atmosphere. To cap out this criticism sandwich with some good points, the Brass does benefit from a number of dartboards, an authentic feel (I think, but I've never even been across the pond so what do I know?), and a truly great beer selection. They also have a parking lot, which is pretty fantastic. It's worth checking out if you want a good pint during off-peak hours or some really great fish and chips but aren't pinching pennies or in a hurry.

This is a pub!! The fish and chips where amazing! The service was great and the place was authentic. It is really hard to find "pubs" in the US, this is ONE! Oh and a great beer selection to top it off. P.S. For the guy that is wondering what British food is supposed to taste like, this is it. You either love it or don't.

I stopped in here with a group of friends recently for dinner and drinks recently. We decided to start with some cocktails and a shared plate of Brie, apples, garlic, and bread. The Brie was the tiniest wedge I've ever seen on a starter, but there was a huge head of garlic to make up for it. The starter plates were the cutest little mismatched flower plates ever, kind of like something you'd find in your British grandmother's kitchen. I'm sure no one else cares about this detail, but I dug it and I want a set of my own. Eric C. and I ordered burgers and fries, Jaime L. opted for the chicken breast sandwich, and Dustin tried the fish and chips. My burger was good, and everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals, but there was nothing that really set the meal apart from any other burger and fries. Service was great, the waitress didn't even bat an eye when we had 4 more people show up at different intervals. There's nothing about this place that makes me want to run back to it immediately, but I definitely wouldn't rule it out if I was in the area and looking for a decent spot.

Best fish & chips I've had in awhile! This place is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, and the English-pub theme is pretty convincing. Lots of local beers and elbow room! Food took a long time though. A long, long time. I had bangers & mash, which was so-so. Stole most of my brother's order of fish & chips-stick to those!

A dump. Smells of grease . No children after 6 as a rude waitress asked my 14 year old for ID then booted us at 545 pm. Head to the Moon and Sixpence for much better, food , beer and service .

It would be better policy for this establishment to make it 21 and older. Since it is not they are now just discriminating and alienating their community. I was at the bar during an event where a family was kicked out for having a child in past 5pm. The kicker is the clock inside was set 20+ minutes fast, the same clock the server used as reference. Also, the couple and their child where in the doors before 5pm, the server strolled over after several minutes of the couple waiting to kick them out, it seems on purpose so she wouldn't have to serve them, and she was not nice or understanding about the situation. Not kid friendly, not people friendly. The customer service here is sub standard. Never engaging or polite servers, but also never out right rude, until this day. Because yelp demands I give at least a one I will do it so this post will be seen.

This place is AMAZING. If you want authentic British pub food this is the place to go. I lived in the north of England for 6 months and this place is almost EXACTLY like a pub that was up the hill from my flat. LOVE IT. Also, there's a nice parking lot in back so you don't have to deal with street parking on Belmont.

I've been to this place over the years several times and finally just got burnt out on it. I used to play cribbage there. The beer is good but the food is crap, typical far for a bar I guess. I just got tired of it. Thinks there are better places out there I guess, like Biddy's which is nearby or other places in the SE

Hey guys, I had to try this place on the reputation of their fish and chips alone. The atmosphere was classic English pub. Dark and warm. Great beer selection. I enjoyed a nice dark German lager. The halibut fish and chips was the best I have ever had. The staff was friendly and attentive. A great place to take family and friends for solid spot on English food. I'm going to try one of the meat pies next time.

I never miss the Horse Brass when I come to Portland and might even sneak in a second visit if time permits. Their constantly rotating tap list is amazing and I never get to all the beers I want to try in one sitting. They have more NW IPA's on tap here than I can get anywhere at home and that makes me happy. I wanted Pliny they Elder or Younger, and I just knew they'd have one of them on tap. I almost lucked out and got both. There are also 4 or 5 cask conditioned beers on tap at any given time. So for beer selection, it's top notch. Now for the food; you can't miss with that scotch egg, but it's so big by itself that ordering a meal after it is difficult. But all the food I've had here is just what I expect it to be. Great English classics which fill you up and help offset the copious alcohol I'm consuming. Additionally, I've come in for the English breakfast, and that a tea, and a pint is a great start to my day. Speaking of the breakfast, it was ordered because I was here to watch the BPL one early morning. I've watched football elsewhere in the city, but I can't imagine going anywhere else on a Saturday or Sunday morning, now. At times, the service can be horrible though, often I'm sitting waiting for my next beer craning my neck looking for my server hoping to catch sight of her. I don't think that it's because the servers are inattentive, but that the Horse Brass doesn't anticipate their busy times appropriately. A bar this size should rarely have only one server. Another quibble, although not a big one, is that the seats are damn uncomfortable. Perfectly fine if you're only spending an hour here, but I never want to only spend an hour here. I'm always happy to get up and walk around when seated on these stools or chairs.

The Horsebrass is the must go to place while walking Portland. They are a huge restaurant, nice ambiance and have a GREAT beer menu. We got there somewhat early so it was pretty dead. We got good seats and I was pumped when I saw the beer menu. Lots of choices to choose from, but we had to start off with the Boneyard IPA since we had heard such great things. It was VERY good. Next up we tried the Boneyard Pale Ale...may have even been better but it was VERY good also. Great trip to Horsebrass, didn't eat just drank but it's a must stop for beer lovers

Only food worth eating is the fish and chips but the fries look like they haven't changed their fryer oil in about a year. Love the beer. But seriously man, the service & attitude here sucks. And I'm a server, who, when annoyed will secretly roll my eyes or sigh inside my head. BUT YA DONT SHOW YER SHITTY ATTITUDE DUDE! You keep that shit secret, you keep that shit safe! You bottle it deep down inside until it can come out and drink later! I think some of these servers need to remember that there are several people who would gladly have their job and do it with a semi-cheery god damn disposition. Go work at the DMV, where you meanies belong!

so I went here to meet up with some friends, went to the front bar to order a drink. they checked my id then said sorry you half to find your group. wasn't even sure my friends were hear yet. I find them then try to order a drink again, a different bartender said are you with your group I was like yes I standing right next to them (felt super harassed by this point")checks my Id for a second time. I pay with cash the entire time. then when I leave the bar I have a bartender chase after me saying That I didnt pay my tab, I tell her I payed with cash the entire time but she insist I re-enter the bar. after looking at the computer I'm free to go. worst bar experience i have ever had..,..... fuck this place.

Met some locals downtown at Baileys. It was late and we were hungry, they recommended Horse Brass and took invited me along! When I arrived I was pleasantly satisfied walking in the door to a lively, but muted room full of happy people. We sat at the bar and conversed with a big burly, friendly bartender while sipping on some awesome beer. And then it came, the fish and chips I had ordered. Wow! Best I've EVER had. Can't wait to come back!

It is unfortunate that the horse brass getting national acclaim for what they do has brought in such novice reviews. You go here and drink great beer eat a few scotch eggs and some great fish and chips and you chill back. So you had to wait 5 minutes. Relax and enjoy your self. You got cut off? The fact that you are complaining makes me think they made the right call. If you want to drink beer, be loud, and get rushed in and out, go to the Hub ( I do like the Hub, just saying) I can't wait for winter brews!

Love the huge list of microbrews on tap and very chill to hang out and have a few beers. They also have more than one thing on Nitro and great selections of cask.

Okay, so this is what's up with Horse Brass... I'm from Seattle, I love Russian River beers, so I'm in Portland, I call Horse Brass. Me: Hello, do you have Russian River on tap tonight? Dude on phone: No Me: Damn, ok Click...(End Call) I show up anyway since I'm sure they'll have something I like. I show up, believe it or not, letters big as the sun on a sign: Pliny on tap. F**K You to the dude who answered the phone.

We were there for over 30 minutes before we got our drinks. I ordered the steak and mushroom pie, which was delivered before we got any beverages, and it was awful. The meat was super dry and the pastry was soggy. The fish is good and I've had better experiences here but this one was terrible.

I'm not sure what people were complaining about. Out server was very attentive. He checked in every few minutes. The fish and chips were excellent, at least according to my wife who is a bit of a fish and chips snob. She ate them so fast I didn't get a chance to ask for a bite. The chicken pot pie was tasty and filling. And they have Fred on tap! I can't speak to the authenticity of the English theme. I suspect it's not very authentic. But who cares? They have Fred on tap and great food. What more do you want from a pub?

I was initially intrigued with the idea of a Scotch Egg and Mike was initially intrigued by the on-tap list. So we headed to Portland to have our curiosity satisfied. Upon arriving we heard happy voices and the traditional pub sounds (glasses clinking and laughter). It was a busy place on Saturday but somehow we managed to get a table. The server was sociable and friendly. The bar was amazing. Mike liked the tap list and we ended up ordering more food than we were hungry for. We ordered baked brie, a Scotch Egg, a reuben, and fish and chips. I can't say how the beer was because I am not a beer-drinker. I did have a root beer though and it was delicious. Slightly carbonated and so flavorful! The brie was melted to perfection and they give ample amounts of apples and bread. The Scotch Egg was not really my thing. The hard boiled egg, encased in sausage and then deep-fried was difficult to eat and not really as interesting flavor-wise. The reuben was amazing! The bread was very soft and fell apart slightly as we were eating it but man it was tasty! The food was tasty and the drinks were great but my favorite thing about Horse Brass was the atmosphere. We hope to return soon!

Found this place after walking at Mt Tabor Park. Great authentic British pub vibe. The selection of beers and ciders is extensive and the prices are reasonable. The food menu is also varied and again reasonably priced. It was a weekend and a little loud, but an eclectic crowd. Our server was friendly and attentive.

This place might be my favorite place to drink beer and eat food right now. I've never been to England but this is what I imagine the pubs to be like there. I don't think you'll find a better selection of beer on tap in Portland (better than Green Dragon and Bailey's Tap Room, IMO). Hell, they not only have Pliney the Elder on tap from time to time, they are the ONLY place to ever have Pliney the Younger on tap in all of Oregon, that I know of. The food is traditional English food and it's excellent, IMO. Sheppard's Pie is their special every Sunday. I would give Horse Brass 5 stars but it's not as good as it gets. No WiFi, for example. Anyway, yeah, it's my favorite right now. See you there!

Horse brass!, Best pub in Oregon! It's got that London feel. My sister and I live next to the HB and everyone that works here is super chill. We are regulars and it feels like coming home to have some great beers and nosh on some delicious grub. Great beer all the time and this place is always full of characters. And amazing English food as well as really great, different food specials. Cheers!

I don't know how I've missed this place! I loved it here. So many great beers to choose from off of a menu JUST FOR BEER! I only had fish and chips this visit and they amazing. I will be back soon to check out other menu items, throw some darts and check a couple beers off the long list!

I was taken on one of the worst dates ever to this joint, but I wouldn't let that deter me from returning, I really loved the feel of this place! It's only a few miles from my house, but felt like I'd traveled 5,000 miles to England. Surrounded by wood posts, tables, bars and walls, you feel like you've not only traveled afar, but back in time. They have a great beer selection and the food was very tasty. Fattening, but yummy. I'm so glad to have a neighborhood bar that celebrates my heritage!

Legitimately British pub shit: imperial pints, HP sauce, proper fish and chips, darts. Thankfully, the beer list is straight up NW (most Brits I've met, if they don't drink John Smith's, drink Budweiser). Shitloads of taps of all sorts; it's hardly worth reading the list because things always run out and get replaced with other great things. One of the reasons it sucks to leave Portland, you can't just walk into a bar in most cities and choose from like 10 IPAs. I would give Horse Brass 5 stars, but fuck if they can't serve a guy a beer. Sit at the bar and it is usually 5 minutes before the bartender even acknowledges your existence. (Don't start reading your book before you get a beer, if they think you're content you will be ignored for even longer.) One more thing which made me fucking laugh. The other day they had a sign on the door like, "No Kids At Any Time." I asked the bartender what that was all about, and he said that the night before some lady's kid was so insanely obnoxious, and she was such a bitch about it, that they just decided, "Fuck it," no more kids. Good riddance!

Some good things, some not so good. I've been twice in the last 2 weeks, so i got a good shake at the place. once on a saturday night when the place was bursting, and once for coffee when it was empty. the good: The English put vibe was great. I'm from a British colony, so it was all amazing for me. The stuff on the walls could have been a bit overkill, but it fed my need for nostalgia and i often found myself just looking around. Also, the fish & chips were great. I miss beer battered fish & chips so it was yummy. the bad: The price was a little high for me. Sad that when we went, lots of the specialty beers were sold out. the seats weren't very comfortable at all and it was actually impossible for us to hear each other speak. the ugly: look, i used to be a server so I get it how stressful things get when every table is packed... but the server threatened to throw out my friend before we even sat down because he joked he had a fake ID. He's 40+, balding, and has 3 kids! needless to say, this woman doomed my perception of the pub before even taking my jacket off. DO NOT ORDER COFFEE HERE! i took a chance and regretted every second of it. i deserved it for even thinking of getting coffee in a pub, so there. i proved my stupidity. bottom line: i would possible go again but only during happy hour and will not joke about fake ids. but if i really wanted to enjoy a beer with friends, i would go to Caldera House @60th & Stark (better food & prices + quieter), or even Belmont Station @45th & Belmont (not great vibe, but more variety and definitely more chill).

I've got some very fond memories of this place and some terrible memories of this place. Luckily, I was inebriated enough all times that on the scale of good to bad, even the bad was still good. The beer selection is awesome. If you are into beer, this is a wonderful place to go. I've had many a brew at the HB that I'd never seen elsewhere, but don't look to the servers to help explain any of the beer business, they are far too busy. Thankfully, I've always gone there with beer people, so they can help me out as I am certainly no expert. HB also always has some interesting cider. Aside from the extensive and interesting draught list, though, there is not a ton to write home about. The place gets wicked packed on weekend nights especially, which is great for them, don't get me wrong, but it can be very difficult to get a drink. If the bar's full, forget about even trying to get close to it and cross your fingers that you get a server. There are also a handful of rules regarding what kinds of mixed drinks they will make, which is totes fine by me - your place, your rules, but they make no sense. Not a ton of places around town one can get British Pub Grub, so kudos for that. It's really all about the fish and chips, y'all. They do it well. Awesome beer place. If you're not as into beer, though, might not be too special for you. It does get rowdy-ruckusy fun during/after sporting events, if that's your jam. My jam's a little more like a topping for crumpets, though,. so I usually only end up at Ye Olde Horse Brass when it's not my turn to pick.

Went here once some months ago and I have to say, I have been craving a second tour since. Not much to say beyond what others have here: great beer selection, quintessentially English, and appropriately some of the best bad-English food you will find in town. But as one of those people with weird predilections for furniture and room shapes, I hereby give my uniquely-scented stamp of approval. The open floor, cozy layout of oaky deliciousness had me feeling warm on all kinds of levels. I can't imagine stopping by on any night to find the place empty, but something about the bar just gives it such a welcoming quality I doubt one would even notice.

My friends refer to this as their "living room," and if I lived a bit closer it would be mine as well. I can (and have) spent hours on end drinking from a incredible selection of beer and having in depth conversations on life, the universe, and everything. Also a terrific place to play cards, board games, or darts! The fish and chips are bomb-diggity, and you can get a sample of a beer to try it before you commit to a pint.

great english style pub, complete with dart boards and pool tables in the back. the atmosphere is divey, with dark wood everywhere, stained with multiple layers of spilled beer. delicious, no? hey, its called character... at least thats what i tell myself after ive spilled beer on myself. the clientele is a mix of old beards and young beards (wait, is there anywhere in portland where beards arent present??). the crowd was boisterous and friendly, the high ABV% beer probably helped with that. they have a great mix of beers on tap all the time, but also a great assortment of rotating visitors. they do a good job of bringing in beers from everywhere. it seems like a great place to grab a beer with friends any time of the week. would i come again? sure! :)

Bottom Line - Ehhhhh, this place is good if your'e hungry and happen to walk by and do not have access to a car or other motorized transportation in addition to being on the verge of passing out. Otherwise, go somewhere else for pub food. Came on Sunday, 20 June 2010 with 3 of my friends and we ordered the following: Fish and chips 10.95 - The fish fillets were way overcooked (or had freezer burn, or both). Too chewy! Turkey pot pie 8.75 - The crust was not flakey... instead it had a consistency of playdough. Though the inside was good. Scotch egg 3.95 - The meat on the outside was way too salty. Burger 6.95 + fries 1 - This was actually okay. Including drinks (3 sodas at 1.50 each; Turmer pilsner at 4.25, our total came to $40.35 + 6.00 tip = $46.35.

The flair is so authentic you'd think you were overseas! The bangers and mash were almost as good as the ones I had in England. Yummy! Also my father tried the fish and chips and they were to die for. I can understand now why this place is rated top 10 places to drink at in the world! A must see!!

We've been here twice and are so grateful to the previous Yelp reviewers who recommended this place. A terrific selection of beers, good food, and great service. The fish and chips is fresh haddock of a quality I haven't had in years. The hot tea is Tips and is served perfectly in its own teapot with all the sides. On the first trip we had the English cheese plate which was pretty terrific. The atmosphere is as genuine as you would hope. It's a great place to hang out and just relax. It's also remarkably quiet for a bar - which I love. Also, in response to the not children friendly comments, I say thank you. It is a bar not a Chucky Cheese. It's nice to be around other adults and not have to deal with wandering, unruly children.

Went three weeks ago with my young grandson. Yes you can take kids but have to sit above the rail. Kid friendly? I suppose they would get bored fast, but hey, they had Guinness so I was good! Guinness was poured proper-like. Had a Bridie that was pretty standard Brit fare, but the Mushroom gravy was very good. Wen last night with my mates, and I had fish and chips. If you are looking for crispy chips, or steak fries, uh, no, these were drenched in flavor, very tasty. he fish was spot on. Easily some of the best beer batter in town. Service was excellent & friendly! Go early, I imagine parking fills up.

So the husband and I came here for dinner. He was lured in by the full English breakfast. We also heard great things about the bar. Sadly, we were driving back to Seattle that day and drinking was not an option (also due to feeling oh-so-fabulous from a beer event the night before). The place was nearly empty and we snagged a table in a somewhat dark corner. Our server was friendly and took our order promptly. The food came out quick and was tasty. They served British baked beans (a different sauce than American style and vegetarian) and they were delicious with the toast. Overall, I enjoyed my time here, and wish I could have enjoyed their wide beer menu.

I am the type of person who, even if I really really reeeeeeeally like something, will usually try something new when I come back to a restaurant. Horse Brass Pub's beef and mushroom pot pie is one of those rare exceptions for me. I'm pretty sure that they have perfected pot pie here. Of course, when you have a ton of delicious beers to accompany your meal, it's an even more enjoyable experience, and Horse Brass has no shortage of tasty brews.

My wife and I lived in England 20ish years ago for a spell... and once in a while we look around Portland for some great fish and chips and a good beer. Finally made it out to Horse Brass.. and was very pleasantly surprised. The Fish and Chips was very very good, the beer selection was outstanding, and the atmosphere was very good (for an English Pub in Portland). We'll be back (if we can drive past Bazi without getting pulled in :)).

As much as I love Pacific NW Beers in all their hoppy goodness.... It is nice to have.... dare I say it.... an imported beer!.... Don't worry... They have local brews too should you feel too naughty. If your beer pub soul does not resonate in this place with an immediate 5 star rating... well perhaps you don't like eurostyle establishments.

I love the food here! We came specifically for the scotch eggs, but were pleasantly surprised at the awesome other choices. I had the baked Brie which came with green apples, a whole roasted garlic clove, and perfectly crusty baguette slices. Paired it with Walking Man's black cherry stout... I am one happy camper!

The beer selection is amazing!!! Walk in, grab yourself a table, select a beer and enjoy. This is a very casual old school Brittish pub. This is a mixed crowd of people who really enjoy beer and good company. It is not uncommon to see well known brew masters here enjoying a pint and a few laughs. There are lots of tables but it can get busy. If you have a group and need a table I would suggest getting there before the after work crowd. The food is fine but the beer is the reason I go.

I don't care if it used to be better. I love it now. Every now and again, I need fish and chips and a dark ale. Or three. I go for the love of a little bit of old England. *Sigh.* And yes, some of the wait staff aren't very helpful. But the ones that are totally make up for that tenfold.

English Pub Done right. Insane beer selection. Great assortment of bland foods (English style). If it weren't so far away I would go way more often. Just need to find a driver so I can sample all those beers. My wife and I met up with a friend here, really enjoyed it.

Great beer selection and good fish and chips. Waited at the bar for more than 5 min before either bartender acknowledged my existence...(not that busy) Ordered beer and food. Bartender never checked in(again, not that busy) and had to ask for check and wait. I've decided that I will no longer tip for shitty service - I normally tip generously - and ask you to do the same.

Rude staff, unwelcoming. We went to have a good time, play darts, and visit with family. After verifying by phone that our family members that were minors could play darts, we were told in house that it was illegal for them to play. We confronted a manager who then told us outright that it was house policy and that we were not listening to him on the phone. The rules were reasonable. The way in which information was relayed to us was outright rude, and the staff were belittling and snappy. Definitely will not be getting our service again.

The first time I attempted to dine here, I couldn't get through the front door. I had such a strong sense of foreboding, I got back in my car and left. A year later, one of our party suggests we stop in for a drink and dinner. My old fears were not just rekindled but immediately realized. The place is filthy. From food on the chairs to sticky tables, a layer of funk covers every surface. The beers were fine, though they were out of several selections. Half the food was inedible (stay away from the steak and kidney pie which was nearly mummified and tasted stale). The other half was surprisingly enjoyable (fish and chips) though the portion size of halibut was a shameful offering (4 small fish nuggets) served atop a mountain of over-salted fries. It was painful to part with the 15 dollar price tag, even if we were sharing, because neither of us ended up full. Service was friendly and deserved to be employed by a much nicer establishment. I suppose it's a decent place to grab a drink, just say away from the food.

Brit pub food. Some fo the best beers in the world. Been coming here a long time. The weekend English breakfasts are fine, filling & cheap. Otherwise one fo the best halibut & chips in town. And the beer. Check the fluorescent boards as you enter to see what's current. Because of strange skill I heave the first beer or two I order are already gone. Service is friendly and knowledgeable, though also well outnumbered by customers on busy (most of them) nights. Always on tap are fine brews like walking man cherry stout and hair of the dogs blue dot. So glad the smoking stopped.

Summary: Low key casual environment, good beer selection. Stopped in on a Fri. night for a late drink. Sat at the bar and tried two beers - they had a good selection. Food looked just ok, so we passed. Would come again for a casual beer.

THEY HAD PLINY THE-MUTHA-LOVING-YOUNGER ON TAP YESTERDAY. I could go on and on about the historical importance of ths place....about how it spear-headed good beer in Portland...about having fond memories of trading stories and pro-tips with locals upon my first visit to Portland... But, if you understand my first sentence...there is really nothing more that I need to tell you. You probably aren't even reading still. I could probably talk about yo Mama. Wow - went here today for lunch...waitress was not rude, but certainly not chipper either. Fine - I can live with that & would still tip 20%....but truthfully, she acted like we were putting her out for coming in to eat. I was a waitress for years - trust me - it's not so hard to show a smile & be friendly. But that's just the tip of the iceberg... My hubby gets his steak sandwich and takes a big bite...RAW!!! Completely raw. He ordered it medium...medium rare would've worked just fine, but RAW?! Unacceptable. Completely not ok to serve raw meat, folks. Seeing as our waitress was nowhere in sight, hubby walked the plate up to the bartender who unapologetically said he'd have it re-cooked. But then hubby realizes he can't imagine eating that sandwich again after that stomach- turning bite. We get up to let our waitress know we're leaving & she offers to pay for a beer. A beer?? How about the whole meal - which we didn't even eat. Some older man who appeared to work in the kitchen said - "it happens honey". Oh it does? Great - guess I know where to go next time I want food poisoning. Get a thermometer & temp your meat if that's what it takes to make sure you don't serve RAW meat! Cooking 101. That uncaring attitude and disregard for human health & safety will go really far towards getting/retaining customers, Horse Brass. We'll never come in again & will be sure our friends don't either.

Arguably Portland's best place to grab a beer if you're really into beer. The tap list here is outstanding, if not at times overwhelming. The bartender who I usually talk to while bellied-up is like a beer encyclopedia, literally. They offer standard taps as well as cask ales and nitro beers. If you come here and order a Bud Light you just might get your ass kicked in the parking lot out back, if not by me than by a staff member or fellow patron. The stained, dog-eared beer menus are a clusterf**k, with items scratched off and others penciled in, and that's EXACTLY the way a true beer menu should be. One keg blows, scratch it off the menus and pencil the next one in. Beautiful. And the pub itself is one in which I could spend countless countless hours. It is homey, which is exactly what a traditional English pub should be. And traditional it most definitely is. Having spent a decent amount of time in quite a few pubs in England and Scotland I can truly state that Horse Brass is about as close as it gets in Portland to an actual English Pub. Get yourself a sudsy, malty pint of cask ale and you'd swear you actually were in England.... especially if it's your third sudsy, malty pint of cask ale.... I'm obsessed with British Breakfasts, and Horse Brass does a pretty darn tasty one. They only serve breakfast on weekends, but MAN, what a way to kick off a Saturday here and there- a Brit Breakfast and a couple pints at 8 a.m. in a traditional English pub with a soccer game on TV? Ahh. I'm eager to try the rest of their menu, especially the scotch egg and the fish & chips, both of which I've read are outstanding. But I don't know when that time will come, since when I typically come to Horse Brass it is with the intent to make a meal out of beer.

Let me say, I use to love this place. Fish and Chips are great. Beer selection is great. I love darts. But one visit my date and I noticed not one, not two, but three rats scurrying around our table. Then they took off in a hole in the wall. We saw them again throughout the night. My date mentioned it to the server in a jokey way. The server told us they are the mascots. SICK! I might come back if I new the placed had a good cleaning.

I've been here once, and it's the only place that I've been shooed away from the bar at. Was meeting friends, found their table and sat down for a few minutes, then went to get a drink. Since it's a British Pub, I figured that, like all the pubs I'd been to in England, you had to utilize your foot muscles and move your body from here to the bar and ask the dude or gal behind said bar for a beverage. But no. As I was standing a few steps from the bar thinking if I wanted a beer or something better, one of the two women that were standing at about the same distance from the bar said to me, "Do you need a beer, SIR?" "Uh, yeah. Are you in line?" "No, you just came from my section; management frowns upon lines at the bar." I didn't tell her that maybe management would be happier if the service staff didn't stand around yammering amongst themselves or if she'd come by the table after seeing me in her section that maybe we wouldn't have this problem. So, she follows me back to the table, comes back once over the next hour or so, then comes back and asks if we want to cash out so we can leave. Didn't have any food, just a Bacardi cuba libre, but from the menu things didn't look very British. If I were to come back, it would be because I had no where else to go or because my friends were too stubborn to go elsewhere.

This is as close as it gets to the real deal English pub. FOOD: top notch, unique items - many taken straight from the English playbook. Possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had... and I am NOT a fish and chips kind of guy, only at the Horse Brass BEER: top notch - huge selection, served at the right temperature - big pints, good price. SERVICE: Old school barkeeps, and waitresses - they drink the beer and eat the food so if you ask a question you get an answer. AMBIENCE: traditional English pub, dark, old carved wood, a bit dirty, and a ton of character - you won't want to leave. ALL IN ALL: This is one of the best pubs I have ever set foot in, don't think about it - just get in there and drink up! start with the garlic and brie, move to a scotch egg, and then order a full order of fish and chips - you will be bloated like Marlon Brando when you're done stuffing your face but you will be a more complete being after the bloating goes away.

Aww, man, I meant to write this ages ago. We went during the crazy snow in February. Super fast service from a really friendly female server that I've totally forgotten the name of!!! Arggg!! Anyway, observed the server have to tell a family that just came in that it was about the time when they were unable to allow children in. NOTE - for sure this has got to be because of the laws regarding underage people in bars and not just some random rule made up by Horse Brass. I'm sure it's a pretty unpleasant part of the job to have to tell families this news and I thought she did such a good job. Kudos for the family for being cool with it too, they admitted they thought they were cutting it close. There is a big ole sign on the door letting people know ahead of time about the rule. So, in conclusion, good food (fish and chips), reasonable price, friendly service. I'm leaving off a star just because it could be a little cleaner.

This place feels like it was picked up out of England and dropped into Portland. On top of the perfect atmosphere, this place pours great beer and has awesome staff. If I lived in Portland, it would certainly be one of my normal haunts. I certainly have a soft spot for an authentic British pub. But if you simply like great beer with solid bartending, Brass Horse will please.

Great atmosphere. RAF themed public house with good beer and a fine selection of unusual food. This place makes me want to roll in with enough of the guys to fill a long table, get pissed on mugs of ale, start a barfight, then leave crying knowing I'll be shipped off to fight Nazis the next day. Personally, I have never seen another pub with so much random memorabilia in it. It gives the place a great lived-in clubhouse feel. I'll be back next time I'm in P-town.

I am always impressed with the waitstaff here since they maintain their friendly and fast service no matter how crowded this place is. I imagine they are used to dealing with excessively drunk over the top people so perhaps they are really immune to everything and anything. I have not eaten here is a while but I remember their food being pretty awesome and I have yet to hear anyone complain a bit. One of my favorite things about this bar as well is that they carry Framboise. I loathe hops and therefore am not a beer person but love my Belgium bubbly goodness. This affords me to hang with friends and drink a cold one too where as most pubs leave me hanging with nothing to drink but water or soda. This pub is also ideal for group gatherings as their tables are perfect for it and encourage it.

You step inside this place and you are reminded of an Irish pub straight out of Ireland, very authentic looking. Whisky, Bourbon, Vodka, Rum, every hard alcohol were in the 'shot dispenser' get-up to be poured. There was a gang of men signing chorus songs, every ten minutes or so they busted out a loud, tenor-ish, melodic songs. "What? This bar comes with it's own men's choir?! Freaking awesome!" But apparently they were the Welch Men's Choir who stopped by for some drinks and grub. I assumed this was strictly only an Irish bar until I peeked at their beer list and noticed they offer a wide range of beers on tap and in bottles for beer snobs like me. Ah-ha, this is what I'm talkin about! Their draft beers featured many brews from Oregon, California, Washington, England, Ireland, and Belgium. Their bottle list also pretty decent, featuring microbreweries from the North West. We were having an 'average' time, until I spotted a man standing in front of me. Old, grey hair, hawaiian shirt, khakis... and.. a stain of shit on the back of his pants. NO WAY am I seeing a shit stain in front of my very own virgin-to-shit-stain eyes. Yes, it exists. And it existed here. Me: "Do I say something to help the ol' man out?" Boyfriend: "HA HA NO!!!! That is hilarious" Me, grabbing my camera: "Am I really taking a picture of this?" Boyfriend: "Get your phone camera, your real camera, PICTURES!" Me: "You're SICK! Okay I am so documenting this experience..." Me, uploading picture of shit stain to facebook: "Oh my god am I drunk or am I really putting the shit stain on FB?" Boyfriend: "You are sick. Or drunk. TAG ME!" And that was that. 2 stars for the mediocore beer. 5 stars to the old man with the shit stain. 5 stars for the Welch Men's Choir. So, chances of you having my experience with those two 5 star additives, not likely.

Sometimes, variety isn't the spice of life. Sometimes, you don't want to drink beer next to someone's grandma, loud bros, and people in biz casual. Oh, and sometimes you want service! We waited patiently for about 20 mins before I approached our server. He took our orders and at his leisure he appeared with our beers. He took a good long look at each of us before he gave our drinks to the wrong recipient. Like a mother hen, I snatched my Strongbow up protectively. How is it that from the bar to my loving hands did my beer get warm? Warm beer is something I'll tolerate at a picnic, or perhaps a BBQ but it is just plain inappropriate at a bar. Now some minor details. The towel machine in the bathroom really taps into my germaphobe tendencies... As someone who has done my fair share of outlandish shit at bars I know better than share an old crusty towel with other bar goers. The only thing I did appreciate about Horse Brass is the beer selection, It's not to be scoffed at. As much as I like a nice glass of beer I just cannot enjoy it in this environment.

It had been a few years since my last visit to the Horse Brass (last one was pre-smoking ban!) so I was happy to return and see if I still liked this pub. I was delighted to find that it has only gotten better with the removal of smoke from the scene. The pub had just the right amount of holiday festiveness and bustle. However, the table service was still a bit indifferent. Example: it took about 20 mins and two requests to get a glass of water, although the waitress had no problem bringing us more beers. Otherwise, I had a great time chatting with Yelp friends new and old at a table near the window. The beer selection was great as always, with lots of winter/holiday seasonals as well as other great, well-chosen regional micros.

It's a freakin' Portland institution. I started going here in '94 and it was the same place it is today - except back then it was as smoky as the set of Apocalypse Now. 4 dart boards means you actually play darts and the beer selection, especially in the last couple of years has been exceptional with keen insights written into the menu so you can actually learn about beer as you drink it!!! The delicious heart-attack inducing fries are definitely in the top 3 plates of fries in Portland - and it's an English bar and feels like one. If you've never been we'll see you this Friday night. I'll be playing darts.

First of all, I'd never really branched out in to English fare. Second of all, this place was walkable to me which is a huge plus. I should've yelped it first. Rats? ....Hygiene?! This place was the opposite of Lucky Labrador for me. There, I disliked most of the beer but loved the food, ambience, other people. Here, I really disliked the food (more later) but loved the beer (more later) and ambiance. I got the Banger dinner. It was a new venture. The sausage tasted like breakfast sausage but the texture of the casing was a little rough (and gross). The bread was stale, arriving without the promised butter. My salad was great though. Why it came with beets, I don't know. The sweet/hot mustard was creamy like a butter. My beer was a shot in the dark. I got HUB Organic Lager in a tenner and some random amber, I don't even remember now. Boont? The one star is for the beer. My dining companion (if you can call it dining) ordered a cheeseburger which was "adequate" and the fries were "among the worst uses of potatoes imaginable to mankind." Also, "I would have rather eaten soggy hashbrowns that slid down my grandmother's ass crack." If that interests you, go ahead and add a star. Half the pub reeked of tremendous, palpable body odor. The fans were running on high on that side. So someone noticed. But instead of quelling the odor, it only managed to disperse it. There is a little video poker nook; if that interests you, go ahead and add a star. Won't be back. The beer was awesome. The place itself was awesome. I loved the old found art things (keys, horse shoes, whatnot). The beer selection was top notch and in a neat area, casing. But really, is the food supposed to be inedible? I've never heard anything good about English fare but that was soggy, stale, bland, soul-less food. If you like beer, there are many other options with yummy food. Eh, if that interests you, go ahead and add a star.

I've only been once, possibly twice, but here's my $0.02. The Horse Brass is an old pub themed bar that's seen better days but still manages to feel homey (or my kind of home anyway). In response to some of the reviewers who complained about the decor, I'd like to say that it's supposed to be dark and a little worn around the edges, this isn't the Pearl people! If you don't know this already, the Brass has GREAT beer and over the decades has helped to nurture Portland's brewing community from something near death into something great. Beervana was born here, and there's a lot of history in them there walls. Some of you won't care about this, some of you will, just something to consider while reviewing their impressive list of rotating taps. My advice (especially to those reviewers who ordered salad or tequila shots), is to come here expecting great beer and heavy comfort food with a British twist. We had great fish and chips, but if you're looking for something light or healthy this is NOT the place for you. If that's not what you're up for, i recommend you cruise down to another part of Belmont.

I first went here to meet up with some girlfriends from out of town, it was close to where they were staying. I really liked the space, it was busy but not loud and spacious enough to feel like we had breathing room. The guy taking care of our table was charming in a socially awkward way and humored my southern-california girlfriends and their requests (I almost died when they asked for Michelob Ultra Lite) but their tap selection was good and the service (or lack of) forgiven since it was so busy. The place prides itself on being a British style pub right? Totally does. Mission accomplished. Second time in was to meet some friends again. The chick taking care of our table couldn't care less which I'm never impressed with. It was slow so there was no reason for her to ignore us but she did. Which sucked and made us feel like we wanted to leave, no bueno. My issue really came up today when my husband went in while waiting for our car to get done in the shop. The S.F. Giants are in the play-offs. He wanted to watch the game. He went in and (knowing him) politely asked to turn on one of the t.v.'s to watch the game. None of them were on, there were only a handful of people in since it was like 11 in the a.m. The woman behind the counter was rude as hell to him, informing him they ONLY play English soccer. Look, I'm a fan of soccer, and I'm a fan of playing the English pub theme out too. But if you have a customer who kindly asks to watch something, no one is watching soccer, it isn't the World Cup, then who cares if you put on a ball game. The chick also didn't need to be rude about it. Very lame and they have lost some customers which won't matter to them since they are so popular but still, brace yourself for mostly lame service.

A Portland landmark. So many beers that you will find something you like and just ask, the employees know their shit! The rueben is the best in town and the ploughmans platters are great to share. I like the atmosphere, I like the darts, I like the (sometimes) quiet afternoons and being able to strike up conversations with pleasant strangers.

I have been coming here for years and find it to be a winning combination of an enormous selection of beer, good food, a comfortable atmosphere and tremendously professional staff. The post about them, "kicking people out" because of kids borders on the hyperbolic, to say the least. For my money, the Horse Brass does a fine job serving great beer and a wonderful atmosphere for adult conversation, reading, darts, celebrations.... And yes, kids are welcome before 6pm as the sign says. It's a friendly, welcoming, often busy place, so don't mistake their efficiency for rudeness. Hopefully you are here for the beer and friends. In most cases, a stringent kid policy is due to OLCC. Most importantly, the Horse Brass is a longstanding, worthy institution, showcasing the Northwest's many fine beers. Truly a meeting place. .

What would you like at Horse Brass? Good luck getting it. Sat for ten minutes at the bar without a bartender even looking our way. Not my first rodeo with HB, so this is not a bad moment review. Great beer, but I don't want to beg to get it.

This place is cool. Good beers. Fast servers. Cool decore like a crazy red Robin with way better stuff on the walls. I came with a party of like 15. We got our food and drinks so quick! And they were quick with the next rounds. Chill place. Not divey but not classy. I like it. They were awesome. Awesome menu with stuff I've never heard of. I think it was German? It was fun.

We came in at 7pm on a Wednesday and were able to get a small table right away. This place has a great atmosphere not unlike the pubs we visited in England. Authentic English fare tempted us as we perused the menu, but we settled on drinks and a shared bread pudding. The tap list is rather extensive with top notch choices. My husband (a beer aficionado) states it is one of the best tap lists he's ever seen. Service is a bit slow, but not annoyingly so.

I first came here a few years ago and it was okay, nothing fancy, nothing terrible. Smeh. I came back here last week and wow. First off, the beer list is extensive - about a pamphlet worth of all kinds of choices. That's a PLUS. I mean, that's what you need really. Second - service was great. We came here for a pre-dinner drink and a post-dinner drink. The waitress remembered our previous drinks 3 hours later - what? That's pretty impressive based on the variety of drinks we got. Third - large with plenty of places to sit and drink/eat play. HB, you've impressed me on this second-ish go around!

This place was packed on a Sunday night. We walked in and were lucky enough to find a table. Good list of beers and we ordered a couple of rounds with fish and chips. Let me say that they were some of the BEST fish and chips I've ever had! Big chunks of fish that you could tell were fresh and not pulled out of a bag. The service was painfully slow, our server mentioned that he had a few call outs and was practically manning the entire restaurant by himself. He made up for it by buying us a round of beer. It wasn't terrible, we were in no rush by any means, we almost forgot about the service and kept on chattering away. The space is super cozy and warm...It's what I would imagine a true English pub to look like. I'll definitely be back to grab more beer and fish and chips.

Overcrowded? Yes. Mediocre food? Yes. (Except for a great bread pudding) Surliest staff in Portland? Yes. Back when you could smoke in bars, I used to think the staff's surliness sort of added some British pub appeal, but now it just seems like clean cut crowds and rudeness. Usually the attitude has to do with where a person is allowed to order (At the bar? Not at the bar? I still dont get it) but it can range from what type of drink you want to who you ask for the darts. Everything has potential to piss off the staff. The worst was when a waiter came over to our table and started literally screaming at us and trying to kick us out when he thought the flattened pabst cans under the table were ours. Yikes! Unfortunately for Horse Brass, there are just too many other great places to get good beer.

Awesome extensive list of good microbrews on tap, including Russian River, whose owner brewmaster, (Vinny) is regarded as the father of the double IPA, Pliny the Elder and he makes a triple IPA, Pliny the Younger, once a year in February and you will have to with in a line to try it (ask your local brew house). If Russian River is on the menu--I am there too! The english style chicken pot pie (which is more of a wrap) was delicious, very hearty sandlots of chicken, but I miss the gravy in the American version, as such, it needs a little spice hit or maybe some mama Lil's peppers. The corned beed was really good but a little light on meat. Our waitress was dazed and confused, so I sought her out to order and also to check out. But the bar is cool and I will definitely come back with my wife, perhaps, try other entries with a different server and upgrade my rating.

Wish I could write a review here, but we were turned away. The place was open till 4pm and we arrived at 2:45 looking for an afternoon meal. They told us their kitchen was closed and they weren't going to be serving anymore. Hardly the welcome we had hoped for after reading the reviews on Yelp and reading about them through the Brew Dogs. Boo.

I've lived in SE Portland for almost 8 years, and I've been coming to Horse Brass on a semi regular basis during that time. It's my go-to spot to kill time while I'm doing laundry up the street. They have an amazing selection of beers, and if you're into fish and chips, they have that too. Personally, I'm not into the food selection as it's mostly deep fried, British style food. Not my cup of tea, thanks. However, it seems like this is place is letting it's shiz slide lately. The service has been steadily getting worse over time, and the only good bartender left is the tall dude who wears a fedora, but I never seem to get to be his patron. The last few times I've been, the servers/bartenders have been straight up rude. For example, I know that some places don't like to serve drop shots. I get that. So, I very politely ask the bartender if they do or do not serve drop shots. His response? "We don't do those here. And as a matter of fact, we don't like the kinds of people that order those kinds of drinks either"... Wow. Really? That was unnecessary. He could have just said no, but hey... let's be a dick too. My most recent experience was of a similar vein... I went out with a group of people, and we were talking, drinking, and having a good time. After 3 beers, our server comes by and informs us that she "isn't comfortable serving you anymore drinks". What?? Again, are you serious? We may have been having a good time, but we certainly weren't making a ruckus, or causing a scene... what the fug, Horse Brass? Why are you being this way? I want to be friends with you. You have a great beer selection, and a bar environment that I quite enjoy... and darts! Don't make me not want to come to you any more. Please?

I love the drink selection, it really is awesome. Food is just ok. Service is painstakingly slow every time I go. For drinks and orders I usually have to make a concerted effort to flag someone down or just go up to the bar.

A proper English pub! Great ambiance, superb beer selection, and good food! It is reasonably priced but trending toward the higher side. There are no TVs (though they air EPL games on the weekend). I've been here a few times meeting with friends and it works very well for that. I also appreciate the dart boards and look forward to attending a Saturday morning EPL viewing. However, the drawback here is the service. It is just bad. Servers seem lazy and disinterested. I had to wait a disturbingly long time at the bar to get an order in. As is true for so much of Portland - great beer, lousy bar (service). This place is definitely worth a visit. It is basically a Portland institution. Go with friends and be patient!

After reading all the negative comments I was expecting something terrible. Our friends invited us to join them at the Pub and we didn't want to turn down the invitation. Wow! What a pleasant surprise! The service was fast and pretty good. I ordered the Scotch Egg, which was delicious! My husband had fish and chips and although the fish was not fresh caught, it still was quite good. Pretty groovy, funky, stinky little place. Typical British stinky pub. If you expect to get an exquisite cuisine you'd probably be better off going to one of the upscale Portland Restaurants. This one is beer, whiskey and junk food. And the place has a lot of character for sure!

ATMOSPHERE: Dark, dark, dark. I walked in on a sunny spring day, and before my eyes adjusted I was almost blind. Depressing. If a cockroach scurried across the bar, you probably wouldn't notice. Decor is tacky, tasteless, gross. I don't understand how anybody can stand to hang out here. Music is what nearly every bar/restaurant in Portland plays: rock hits of the 70s/80s/90s. SERVICE: Bartender wasn't as knowledgeable as I'd prefer, but helpful and friendly. I couldn't realistically ask for much better. He did ask if I wanted another a beer earlier than most beer bars would; he was more like an Applebees or McMenamins bartender in that respect. But yeah, overall, I was pleased. I thought staff was a little too chatty with each other. If staff wants to visit, I think they should do it in back, not at the bar. PRESENTATION: Actually, nice glassware. Heck, even my generously-portioned complimentary sample was served in a real glass. PRICE/VALUE: Varies. I had a glass of a beer that happened to be on tap at Belmont Station and Beermongers, which made for easy price comparison. HBP had the lowest price. In contrast, most pints seemed a bit steep. For example, an imperial pint of Guiness was $6.25. That's a lot of money for the "Irish" equivalent of Bud Light. OVERALL: Beer really isn't that great. HBP's taplist isn't any better than countless other places in town. Maybe their reputation was earned years ago, but sorry, that doesn't mean anything to me today. I'm glad I finally tried the legendary HBP, but I can't imagine I'll ever go back.

I've never experienced the bad service referenced in the other reviews, but we try to sit at the bar if we can. Hugh the bartender is pretty great. He knows all the beer on tap and then some. If you don't like beer, or microbrews, you might want to pass. That could be the problem that other reviewers had, if they sat at the bar. Bottom line is this: sit at the bar, be nice, and you will get great service from the bar keep. Be a beeyotch, and you get what you get.

Pretty darn good, great beer selection, a bit busy--totally worth it. Just a note, the meat pies are chunks meat, not minced meat... So Expect chunks of kidney if you order the steak and kidney pie. Fish and chips was great, the fries are thick cut and crispy! Yum, I will definitely be back!

RECONSIDER! MAJOR HEALTH CONCERN. Took a friend to dinner tonight with the confidence of previous experience at this restaurant, enjoyment, reasonable prices, good brew selection, good food. I will never come here again as the experience I had this evening was DISGUSTING and not something I have seen at ANY restaurant I have encountered in Portland. Oh, do read on. Restaurant was moderately busy for a Wednesday evening. Found seating at a large table with low stools in the middle of the room near a large crowd of people. We ordered a couple drinks which our waitress brought to us quickly. We found a more quiet place to sit near the bar and she was fine with us moving. She explained we would have a different server. Thank God. New server was alright, nothing special. We ordered fish and chips which I've ordered before, pretty fail proof. Fish was good as always, fries looked like they had been cooked in oil that has not been changed in weeks. Not too appetizing. Forgivable. HOWEVER, what I witnessed tonight while eating my meal will stick with me indefinitely. Since we moved and were sitting right across from the bar it was easy to watch the servers. I was MORTIFIED as I watched our original waitress dig her bare hands into a pile of full trash under the bar counter facing the customers. She was rummaging through half eaten food and dirty napkins, wrist deep. It looks like she found what she was looking for (possibly a receipt or check?), went to the serving computer screen to what looked like correct something, and then IMMEDIATELY GRABBED PLATES OF FOOD AFTER DIGGING IN THE TRASH. I watched in horrified awe as I saw her thumbs touching the food on the plates. Worst part of all is that she delivered them to customers at the table we had just moved from. I could not even finish my meal. With hesitation, I paid my new waiter and tipped him. I finally went up to those customers and told them what happened and they were absolutely disgusted. They were actually upset that I hadn't said something sooner but honestly I was so disgusted I got my check and left, trying not to puke. I actually had to sit in my car for a minute and collect myself before going back in to be the harbinger of bad news. What really irks me is that as we were leaving, she is standing at the bar again playing with her phone with the same dirty hands that were digging in the trash. Then to touch the computer screen again, which other waiters also touch with their hands to serve the food. It takes one person or action to ruin the reputation of a business. People make mistakes, granted. But as someone who handles food on a consistent basis as part of their job should be completely ASHAMED that this is their level of service. You have lost my business and I hope to god you fire that woman before a lot of other people jump ship or someone gets seriously ill.

I have come here twice in a large group (about twelve people) and each time our server has handled the chaos with grace and efficiency. It made our night. Tabs were split up and organized by person from the very start so everyone received the correct bill at the end of the night. Even when we moved tables once, he was able to keep track of who was who and what was what. They have a vast selection of beer (and other drinks) to choose from and the food is reliably good tasting and bad for you. Both drinks and food are brought out pretty quickly. There are all kinds of tables to choose from (big and small) and there is a darts board in the back. This isn't somewhere I would go to have a quiet dinner. It can be loud, and at times difficult to hear what is going on around you. Knowing this and expecting this, I couldn't really take a star off for it. Particularly because we made our share of noise and appreciate very much that we were put up with.

I keep hoping for a lift of the 'no minors after 5pm' rule. Come on Horse Brass, give those of us with littles a chance to enjoy the place, we promise to leave by 7.

I really want to like this place. The beer selection is fantastic. The place itself is pretty close to being in an English pub. The food however, is dreadful. If you order a bridie or a steak & kidney pie, and it's in front of you in 5 minutes, then it has to have come out of a microwave. That's the only way I can think of to get pastry to come out of the kitchen this bad. This kind of food is what gives Americans the impression that British food is bad.

Not kid-friendly. We really enjoyed the fish & chips, the pot pie and contrary to some other reviews, the service was great. We were there on a weekday from about 4-5, so not peak hours and they were pretty empty. The beer was very good and we were all pretty agreed that we definitely wanted to make many return visits. Until... Another family walked in with their child and sat down nearby in our otherwise empty section. What we were then treated to was an example of the most ham-handed, poorly executed eviction of a guest any of us had ever had to watch. It was 5:07pm and the waitress came over, and instead of asking the mom in the group aside to explain, simply announced to everyone that they could not stay, as children needed to be seated by 5. This then escalated and became quite a show, with the manager getting called and basically telling them it was on the door, so tough. I'm skipping a lot of detail, you'd have had to seen it, but suffice to say, it left us all pretty wide-eyed and horrified at the callous and nasty way this was handled. I am not taking a stand on bar babies. I am saying though that we were having a great time and that, thanks to the mismanagement of this encounter, Horse Brass so effectively shocked us all and alienated the parents in my group, that we had to cancel our remaining drink orders, pay up, and go, so no, not an experience that left us with a feeling of enjoyment... at all. So, to be clear, this review is about OUR experience and it's about Horse Brass and my own opinion based on that experience, NOT about the other party's experience.

Beer, fish and chips, girlfriends in Portland! What more can I say! We had a barmy good evening yakking, eating and drinking beer at Horse Brass Pub. The best fish and chips! Half an order is plenty! The service was great. The atmosphere was very relaxing. We stayed for several hours as different friends joined us through the evening. The waitress was attentive to each new arrival as well as keep our liquid of choice (water or beer) filled to the brim. I would definitely go back here again for the fish and chips. Luvvly-jubbly!

I love this bar. The atmosphere and beer selection are outstanding. And the nostalgia doesn't hurt either (it's the first place I went while visiting Portland before my move). An endless rotation of craft taps, cribbage, darts, English fare. What more could you want? Oh, yeah... Traditional English breakfast. Used to be my weekend ritual. Unfortunately it went the way of the buffalo when Don passed (RIP).

The worst service I've had in a long time. The customer in front of us had been standing there for five minutes and none of the employees bothered telling him, or us that we need to seat our selves. Seating then turned into a free for all of trying to find seats to take from other groups so everyone can sit. Meanwhile two of the severs are just standing around talking. The only guy running around like a chicken with his head cut off finally comes and tells us he can't tell us about any of the food or drink because he is overly busy. We place an order for drinks and he takes away all the condiments from our table, you know, because we don't want food (sarcasm). Long story short... It's over priced. The service is garbage and I'm shocked that people go there. However we did have to et up and leave before our order came due to how terrible the experience it was. Hopefully we can go back sometime and change my mind. As for know I don't recommend it.

It was my honor to finally visit the Horse Brass Pub, which was once owned by the craft beer legend, Don Younger. I wished I could find a time machine that let me go back in time, sit down next to him, and ask him about where and what I should drink beers in Portland. The Horse Brass Pub truly is a place that not only has great and wide selection of local and regional brews, but also makes you feel very comfortable to be a beer nerd and be surrounded be many of them. It is in SE part of town, if you are a visitor like me who without a car, you may have to take a bus ride (hat off to the great public transportation networks in Portland), leech off a local friend for a free ride :), or call a taxi (I loved radio cab service) to get there. It will be a worthy trip for sure! Aside from the impressive beer selection, the waitress served us that night were also as good as one can get BTW. She memorized everything and provided us immediate information on what was available vs gone whenever we ordered something from the several pages long of drafts on tap list. It is always refreshing and awesome to meet the waiter/waitress know their menu, and know it well.

On vacation from Tampa, Fl, looking forward to meeting friends here for drinks and dinner. There was about 8 of us, and the staff was horrible. We managed to find a table to accommodate us, and could not get any service. The bar staff would not allow us to order a drink, told us to sit down and wait for a waitress that told us it would be an hour before she could serve us. We of course left and will never return. So many other amazing places in PDX! Boo Horse Brass!

Whats not to love about the Horse Brass? Ok- maybe they could offer up more vegetarian options and sell their amazing house-made crisps as a side instead of just accompanied sandwiches. The beer list is always impressive but most of all I love the atmosphere. The dark wood English-pub vibe is relaxing and the kind of bar you could just hang out with friends for hours. This place does get pretty busy but with all the space I find I am better able to tune it out, unlike smaller places like Baileys (which I love). The veggie pasty is ok, again I wish they had more vegetarian options but I understand being a British pub they don't scream vegetarian-friendly.

First and last time going to this place. It's not really the place that I didn't like, it was the waiter named Michael (145)...the one with the heart tattoo on his neck. When I first entered I was greeted by him sighing that there were more customers going in. He didn't seem to enjoy the fact that we has multiple people in our party. After we discovered our seat I started playing around and shredded a coaster, he approached me from behind and told me "Can you not do that!?" In a tone he shouldn't have used with a patron, instead of being smart and courteous, he went with the tone that crawled under my skin. Another friend of mine later came and joined us at the pub where she was greeted by him shooing her away from where she was standing, again, he could be polite and a human about it but he decided to throw his invisible feces at us out of his mouth. Later a table opened up where we can join the rest of the party so we asked him if we can move and he just half-assembly replied us with a "yes" and decided to loudly mutter "Jesus fucken Christ!" Thinking that we weren't going to hear it.... Oh well, what more or less can you expect from that guy. The thing that irritated me the most was when he approached me after reading the note on the back of the receipt that I wrote saying "learn how to talk to people" he charged up behind me and told me "you know you are stealing from people when you do this right!?" I left early because of him, I could not overcome the feeling of disgust and disrespect every time he approached. Do not lecture me about leaving [you] a tip when you don't deserve one...AT ALL. Why and how can you even think you deserve a tip from me after mistreating me and my party the whole time I was there? I did not steal anything from anyone, [145] Michael, I paid my bill. Reevaluate how you treat people.

Freaking awesome. The best bar I've been to.... Ever! Lots of beers on tap and great ones. Amazing selection of micro brews, casks, nitro, and so much more. Disclaimer on the menu: small kitchen, no substitutions, long wait. All perfectly ok and worth the wait. Had the Ploughboy, Scotch egg, and 2 piece fish & chips. All excellent! I'm going to miss this place and can't wait to return to Portland. Atmosphere, crowd, authenticity, etc.

One of my favorite Portland alehouses; I try to get here at least once on every visit to the city. A dark, cluttered room oozing with beer-geek ambience. A limited menu, with some British-pub emphasis--Scotch eggs, shepherd's pie, and such. I went for their Reuben sandwich, on marble rye, served with potato chips, a dill spear, and, oddly, carrots. Large, constantly changing beer list, with the emphasis on regional drafts. I sampled: - Stickmen Brewery, Lake Oswego, OR. Don's Dry Wit. 5% ABV. Almost clear medium gold, light head. Almost no nose. Dry, malty, with not much of the usual witbier citrus and coriander notes. - Baerlic Brewing Co. Portland, OR. Baerweiser Beechwood-Aged Cream Ale. Medium gold, light head. Little nose. Mild bitter-hop front against a strong malt base. - Worthy Brewing Co., Bend, OR. Eruption Imperial Red Ale. 7.6%. Clear red-amber, medium head. Moderate malt nose. Strong, bitter/floral front against a sweet malt base. - Evil Twin Brewing Co., Brooklyn, NY. James Beer Berliner Weissbier. 3.5%. Served in a goblet. Cloudy medium gold, medium head. Tart aroma. Intense sour taste. Said to be made with strawberries and olive juice(!), but I was unable to detect them.

The beef and mushroom pie had far more beef than I expected, and the fish and chips my wife tried was exquisite! An excellent selection of beers, including a few that would pass muster with CAMRA. We came back the second day, after trying another British pub. This time we tried the scotch egg and the sausage roll. Both were excellent, very "British" in both flavour and texture. The sausage in both had the proper mix of spices that did not overwhelm either the egg or the pastry. Salad cream would be an excellent addition to the Branson pickle on the menu.

Second time here recently and it's a cool place. Recommended this English style pub a few times too. People really like it as there are many beers on tap. The food is the usual English stodge food but go for that! Bangers and Mash and Banger Specials and I had a pasty which was ok. The service is great and the place was packed so it's a place a lot of people like. Our friend from England enjoyed it and said it felt legit so it must be. It's a little dark inside with lots to look at. It feels like a bar/pub for sure and a place where regulars surely hang out.

3.75. Great beer selection, service was a bit dodgy, didn't even consider ordering food. Played some darts and connect 4 without a connect 4 board. It's weird, I don't remember much about this place, and we started the night here. I guess it couldn't have been terrible or I'd have taken notes.Just 'meh' I guess. I'll have to go back but the fact that it was so bland I don't remember any real details about the place itself is unusual.

I got a burger which was good and it came with potato chips (crisps). It was good and satisfying. My wifey got the fish and chips...OMG...This was cooked perfectly with a light beer batter which was not greasy. The pieces of fish were thick chunks. The fries were thick cut, which I don't particularly like, but in all fairness, that is the same way they were prepared when I visited London a few years back. The cole slaw was made with horseradish which gave it a nice kick. Nice atmosphere with nice people and above average bar fare. You have my vote!!!!

Great atmosphere in the british themed pub far east on Belmont. They have a wide selection of beers, some gritty London pub fare (tip: try the scotch eggs) and darts at the back. Its a huge place so you will always find room to sit. The only drawback is its a bit far away from downtown.

Kinda spendy.(we had the pot pies and they tasted like British pot pies, bland.) Kinda always crowded. (People love this place, find a spot before it's too late!) Kinda loud. (What? I can read your lips, my house is on fire or pass the salt.) Nice beers.( a change of pace, real pint glasses!) Will I be back? Probably mos def, but I'll stick to beer and use hand signals to communicate!

This is an English-style pub that has a nice, homey feel. Cheap wine options, and a great beer selection. They also have food that are heavy British/American stuffs, but i can get a salad :-) Dart boards are fun!

I really wanted to like Horse Brass pub and I loved it. The bar itself is a beautiful, exposed wood beam type of bar you would imagine would be in England. The walls are covered with memorabilia and advertising. There are many brass accents and small lights inside the dark pub. The food I found to be outstanding, a half order of fish and chips with a creamy yet crisp coleslaw ($9.95) was delicious, i should have gone for the full order. I will next time.

I come here all the time... but I also live very nearby. Here is the long and short of it... HB is a great pub, you can play darts, drink beer, yak with friends etc. It's a cool spot. You will have a good time if that's what you're looking for. Food is british, enjoy the fish n chips and cheese plate. Service, (like a lot of places) depends on the individual and night of the week. I enjoy weekdays here for the mellowed out vibe. I would vote thursday as the busiest day, but I could be wrong. The only thing I would mention would be the higher costs... it may not seem like a huge different, but if you go to The Moon and Sixpence you will spend half the money for the basically the same thing and you might get better service. But that's all I can say:)

If I lived in this neighborhood, I would be here so often that the bartenders would know my name. This is a super laid back pub that offers a solid selection of beers, ciders, and cocktails plus they have a rotating specials beer selection, which I prefer to order from. The bartenders are quick, even on a Friday night, and know how to work the room. And by that, I mean they know when to come around and ask for refills/orders and they know when to stay away and just let you be. The menu is typical pub food, done well. The fries are awesome. Darts in the back area. Ohhhh yeah (said with Randy Savage voice, of course).

So here it is long after my last review...on the upside the rancid stench of decades of tobacco tar has faded, however the place is still subpar. This was the last chance. A slow Friday afternoon with a dozen people in the place and it still takes over 15 minutes to get 1 taster and 1 pint...as the waitress wanders aimlessly around the mostly empty bar. Fairwell. I won't be back. In Portland there are too many good beer taps to suffer this one. Some places only survive due to nostalgia of a different time, perhaps before every neighborhood had a better bar with a better tap list than this.

While the Horse Brass has a great beer selection, that's pretty much all I can say to recommend it. The service in particular is abominable. The last time I went to this pub was with a group of friends, one of whom has a very loud voice and laugh. That's just how he is - and since we were at a noisy bar, we assumed any volume issues would be no big deal. Instead, we got told to be quiet as we were disturbing fellow diners. Later, my husband saw the waitress while she was having a cigarette and apologized for his friend's noisiness. She complained to him for a solid five minutes about how terrible his best friend was. Ironically, the person she was complaining about is the guy who introduced us to the bar. In previous visits, I've experienced a complete lack of service (the waiter comes once or twice - and that's it) or just careless services (the waiter standing at the bar chatting for five-ten minutes before checking on his/her tables). All in all, I will never go back. I don't care how many great beers are on tap. I can't deal with the service.

GROSS FOOD THESE DAYS BUT GREAT PLACE. Are you seriously snapping photos of your soggy chips and grey, watery Halibut you've just been served and uploading them? Come on, Portland. You can do better than this. First of all, I'm a regular customer at this place, and I love it, but the food is awful, and on a weekend, the service for food is hilariously awful My mate and I sat at a table and ordered some Fish and Chips just to dip our toes back into the water as were on our second pint each and getting hungry. The one (that's right ONE) waitress brought us our food, didn't give us any silverware, or malt vinegar, or ketchup, or even a napkin! Finally, I had to approach the bar area where they bus the food from and ask for these things. The frazzled, lone waitress, would wisk by our table, seeing our empty pint glasses and picking gingerly at our soggy, breaded fish and chips, and never stopped to check or anything. But she sure DID check when we moved to the bar, leaving our food almost entirely uneaten. She zeroed right in, remembering we hadn't been given our bill yet, and then I had to wave her over to the bar. Oh hi! Nice of you to check on us. She must have thought we bailed without attempting to pay. I've been eating fish and chips seemingly forever, and as a London-Native, can tell you that my personal history goes back to the days where they still wrapped takeout fish and chips in printed newspaper. This practice was banned, but trust me, I know some good and authentic British food when I see and taste it.

I go by very often, and love the food. Everything that I've had has been good, at most of it is significantly better than that. The scotch egg is amazing. The reuben is one of the best I've had, and I am a connoisseur of reubens. Their beer selection leaves nothing to be desired. You can get some of the best beer there is to be had here is a casual environment not swarmed with high pitched conversation.

  • Josh T.

Come for the atmosphere, beer list and darts. The food isn't spectacular but then again maybe that makes it authentic, it is a British pub after all. The staff are great. I have never had bad service and I come here quite frequently as it is a block from my house. I spent years avoiding this place because of how smoky it was but since they went smoke-free I've become a regular. The nicotine stained walls and memorabilia give testimony to its smokier days but luckily those are over. Did I mention darts? Like a LOT of darts? I think there are 4 or 5 boards scattered around the bar some in tucked away private little nooks. If you want one of the best beer lists in town this is for sure the place to be. Skip the food, get your buzz on and then stumble down to the good food here carts to get your grub on. Pick up a movie at movie madness and have a beautiful Belmont night!

One of my favorite places to eat/drink/toss darts in Portland! Seriously, I love this place. The only reasons they don't get 5 stars from me are 1.) bathrooms are TINY. 2.) no A/C. Their English pub atmosphere, awesome food, and incredible beer choices keep me coming back! Fish and chips are amazing! I remove the breading and its delicious so I can only imagine what it tastes like breaded! One of the best burgers in town (in my opinion) Seriously, just try it. You'll love it.

There's a reason this place is on Draft Magazine's Top 100 Beer Bars in the U.S. I loved the British pub atmosphere. The fish fry was delicious! My brother got the bangers and mash and enjoyed it as well. Their beer selection was good and it looked like they change over the kegs pretty often judging by what was added and crossed off of the print out. Service was on the slow side. Two tables who came in after us got their food before us and they both got fish and chips. They deserve more like 4.5 stars, but I had to bump down.

Food was good, little disappointed in the beer selection for English/Irish beers ( Guinness and a choc stout , out of the others listed) but overall worth going to. Scotch egg was very good.

I saw some bad reviews on here so I was a little concerned with some lumbersexual hipster giving me attitude at the bar and soggy fish and chips. But let me tell you, I didn't get any of that. What I did get was a couple nice guys named Chris and John who were very helpful and a giant plate of fresh crispy tasty delicious halibut with some killer French fries and slaw. And the tartar sauce was unreal. If you want good food and no bullsh@t service come here. My guess is if you bring in a shitty attitude you're gonna get one in return.

******************A PORTLAND MUST**************** My husband I had seen this Pub featured on the Travel Channel or is it Food Network, Hummm don't really remember which one, but we knew we wanted to try this place if ever in the Portland area. Now fast forward a few months and here we are, but the trip getting there was not easy as we had forgotten the name of the place. So in our search to find the pub all hell broke loose at my husband's stubborn persistence that the place was a "German sausage place." So as the good wife I look up "German sausage restaurants" and though none of the names sounded familiar to me I KNEW that the ones that did pop up were not it. Finally I ran across the name and instantly knew it was the one, but when I told him it was a British Pub, oh man, all hell broke loose AGAIN. He had it in his head that it was and authentic German sausage restaurant and not a British one. His reasoning being that the British don't eat sausage (I don't know where he gets his facts from) but after much convincing we ended up at the Horse Brass Pub (which by the way when we arrived my husband realized I had been right all along, but of course he'd never admit to it). From the outside if you're not paying attention you can easily pass the Pub. The sign is on the smaller end that although it's not microscopic in size, it can easily be overlooked. The facade is a beautiful red brick wall which to me is very reminiscent of old style British Pubs, at least the ones I went too. The inside is wooden walls, floors, tables, so on so forth given the place a very old country, gloomy and dark look (but gloomy in a good way). We arrived prior to the rush hour and were promptly seated. I'll say now that our waitress was divine, she was absolutely amazing and we give her 6 stars for service (I just wish I could remember her name..older 35/40ish, female blond, with motherly aura about her)....LOVE HER. Anywhooo, we order: DRINKS: Double Mountain, White Rider of Conquest Voit Bier: I don't often drink beer, as I prefer wine, but when in Rome right...well it was a very pleasant ale, smooth with very little after taste, certainly a thirst quencher. Chocolate Shake Porter dark ale: My husband really enjoyed the subtle chocolate undertones and it wasn't very heavy for a dark ale. FOOD: for an appetizer we shared the Fisherman's stew: Holy Moly! They do not hold back on the fish which we loved. Oh, it was filled with chunks of savory and mild fish, and perfectly creamy...YUMM Banger Dinner: My husband ordered the banger dinner which consisted of 2 sausages with a salad and side of beets. The sausages were soft and mild not overly seasoned or with an offensive smell. The salad fresh and the beets oh the beets...they made my heart beat...so fresh, earthy and sweet....they should consider making borscht...YUMMY Fish & Chips: I ordered the classic deep water halibut fish & chips. I seriously think I had a foodgasm. The fish was soft, flaky and sweet. I can't recall ever tasting such a delicious fish ever. The fish was nicely battered and not overdone. The chips crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with the skin...DOUBLE YUMM DESSERT: Bread pudding: It was tasty served with a side of heavy cream. Nothing really to write home about but it satisfies the sugar craving after a nice fish and sausage diner. WE FEEL IN LOVE WITH BRASS HORSE PUB, we know that if we return to Oregon this will be a mandatory stop. As far as the bar, well we never made it there but it looked well stocked and had a nice influx of happy patrons

BEST FISH N' CHIPS EVER!!!! We've loved this place for a while. Especially for a pub (which you don't always automatically assume will have great food), it's solid-great tasting grub. I've had the scotch egg, bangers/mash, various burgers/sandwiches, fish sandwich and their fish n'chips, and they never disappoint! Their food is always flavorful (never bland or that kind of 'boring English food' you hear about), hot and great tasting. Also, the fish and chips (if you order that) is consistently the perfect balance of breading and not too greasy. It is amazing every time and by far my favorite thing there. Exciting when you find a spot that does this dish very well, because it varies so widely and can often be hit or miss elsewhere. The staff is attentive and friendly enough but not overbearing or fake. They're warm and take your order, but let you continue to chat with who you're with. One guy in particular (I wish I could remember his name) w/glasses, is always ready to chat about their beers in more detail. Their beer list is pretty extensive, with rotating selections from across various countries (my boyfriend is more the brew-expert and he's always impressed with the various types and flavors). I also like the ambience. It just has that great, old-world, casual pub feel. They also have a few dart boards and we play sometimes if we're in the mood. If you're looking for a fun, casual date night or just a great plate of food with a beer by the bar, I would check out this place.

We were invited to the pub from a new hike club we joined. My husband had the fish and chips. The fish was Halibut so a little more for the type of fish but the portion was well worth it. I had the chicken sandwich it was delishious! Chicken breast cut in half on a toasted hoagie roll. We will be back.

I was with a large group that tried to get service and was shunned by the staff. I have been visiting this dive since the mid 80's and was a regular while living in the Hawthorne hood. I'm shocked at the treatment we received. Not only were we disappointed with the crowd handling of the staff but the rude attitude made it an easy decision to run from this place that I once called home.

If this place wasn't funky and cool it would be an Applebees with 20+ beers on tap. But it is funky and cool, so it isn't Applebees, instead it's a great spot to eat/drink/hang out. Most folks don't realize that you seat yourself so they stand and look around and unfortunately many leave. Don't be most folks. Seat yourself. This place is worth it. Note: No minors after 5pm. Also note: No TVs. Come here to talk to people and play darts, not watch sports.

I just moved here to Portland, and this was my first trip to a local bar. I have nothing to compare it to in this famed food and beer city, but from what I can tell, the vibe was great: just a classic English pub. It's a little stodgy and stuffy, but in no way to it's detriment. It creates a cozy feel that you and your friends could bask in for hours over great beer and conversation. I didn't eat, and only had one beer, but it was excellent and cheap. I drank a 10oz sifter of Migration's Bourbon-aged Imperial Stout, Bootstrap. It was a classic bourbon stout: rich, but not over-powering, full-bodied and creamy. For $2.95, I could drink cheap all night. The service was pretty slow, but I server rocked it. If anything it was a managerial thing or just a unexpected rush. Either way, the slow service was barely noticeable. This isn't an in-and-out kind of place at all. Overall, I enjoyed my first Portland bar, and I definitely wouldn't mind coming back!

I liked Horsebrass much better when Don Younger was running the place. I miss Don. I miss seeing him fall asleep every once in a blue moon on the bar and then arguing about whether a car would drive him home. Portland used to be more quaint and provincial in a good way. The new owners of Horsebrass are more corporate and also charge quite a bit more. I miss Don. I missed his wake at the Brass, unfortunately. I heard it was really amazing with free beer and The MacCallan whisky. You have to hand it to his kids for doing that. Or maybe he put it in his will. I still do go to the Horsebrass, every now and again. It's atmosphere is world class. Reminds me of trips to the UK I've taken in years past.

This is the kind of bar that when you're at home with some friends and you say, "let's got to the bar", everyone knows where you mean. The setting is an old style English pub with English food to boot. I will admit some of the food is a bit over priced, however it always tastes fantastic! There isn't any karaoke, loud live bands, just people sitting, talking throwing darts and drinking......oh yeah! The beer! This place is known for having 59 beers on tap at all times (unless they run out) and also rotating taps as well. They have micros, imports and a little bit of everything else. So if you're looking for a place to go out and actually communicate with another human being without too much of a technological distraction than the Horsebrass is for you! The service is on par with what you would expect from people who get bombarded with the beer snobs of this town, but as long as you are a courteous person with common sense (and don't sit at dirty tables because they hate that) than you'll get the best service you deserve. It gets crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but in reality what place isn't? If it's a weekend night and the bar is empty, the owner is doing something wrong! So hopefully this helps you decide where to go on your next outing.

I've been coming to the Horse Brass for a long time (since before the smoking ban), and it has been one of my favorite bars in the area for a while. I needed a place with big tables to have my birthday party at this year, so i thought "why not?" On a bumping Friday this month my boyfriend and i showed up, mid dinner rush, trying to secure a large table for my party. We showed up half an hour early, as recommended by the server i had talked to on the phone earlier that week. The initial server we talked to was very grumpy and dismissive, but her section near the front was packed so, i get it...but still, sheesh lady. The next server i talked to was more helpful and pointed me in the direction of somewhere we could sit while we waited for something to open up. Once we got situated at a round table near the dartboards our server showed up, a brunette bespectacled medium height, medium build guy. He was very kind and helped everyone promptly as they showed up. Our group trickled in by pairs, and once we all had beers i asked if he would be able to divide the bill for us. He apparently had already had the foresight to do so, and had divided it by the pairs that came in together! That's such a perceptive and useful thing for a server to do. He was also very busy the entire time we were there , but he kept up the pace and we got plenty of attention and service from him. The food was excellent pub fare usual. We had the scotch egg and fish and chips. The scotch egg is as delicious as it is unhealthy, and the fish and chips are still some of the best i've ever had in Portland (and they have been the best for years). The beer selection here is always stellar, they regularly keeps unusual beers on tap like sours and krieks. They keep a few cask conditioned beers (naturally fermented), as well as a list of varieties so wide that there really is something for everyone. On this evening I had Old Rasputin (always a favorite), Leafer Madness (a hoppy beer, yet creamy, due to the cask conditioning), and Pliny the Elder (one of the best IPAs of all time that is often hard to get on tap. The only complaint i can think of (other than the initial interaction with the stressed out server lady) was that there weren't enough chairs in the whole place! It was very busy, but even so it seems like it would behoove them to keep some extra chairs in storage for busy nights. Overall, it was an EXCELLENT night with some of the best service i have ever gotten in a pub setting! Thanks Horse Brass!

It's a fun neighborhood spot with a festive atmosphere. They charged me 75 cents for mayo, not cool...

Came for the Fish & Chips after reading the reviews on Yelp. What a great place! Funky, English Pub with interesting tables and great stuff on the walls. Very dark (hard to read the menus). I had the half order of fish and chips and it came with two large pieces of fish, good Cole slaw and the best fries in Portland. No, really. I'd go back just for the fries. Husband gave his id to the bartender in exchange for darts. Set in a nice neighborhood not far from SE Hawthorne, we never would have found this place on our own. We'll be back with friends.

I visit Horse Brass on average once every 1 or 2 months. This place has been one of my favorites for the past 10 years. It used to be thick with smoke, which I loved. After the smoking ban the vibe of the pub seemed to mellow a little but my non-smoking friends assure me the clean air more than makes up for it. The pub has excellent RAF World War II decorations and my favorite Fish and Chips in town.

I was introduced to this pub years ago, when one could still smoke indoors. In those days you couldn't get any more authentic; you could barely see across the room through the billowing haze of tobacco smoke. Even back then it was great, though. These days the air is cleaner, and I'm happy to state that the ambiance has suffered little. If you can handle a bit of noise (made by other patrons having a great time) and crowding (try not to put your elbow on the top of another patron's head when you rise to visit the w.c.!), and a certain surliness projected by the harried wait staff (the only reason I'm giving less than five stars), you will enjoy yourself. The drinks selection is great, as is the food IF you have a tolerance for British and Irish fare; I love the stuff, but there are those that are less enthusiastic -- they're the ones drinking more than me. Well, keeping up at least.

It's a good British bar, however the staff & bartenders can be quite rude at times, not a huge fan because of this.

This used to be the smokiest bar in PDX and I hated it (being a nonsmoker). Now, I love it! Scotch eggs and impirial pints; how can you loose? Service can be slow but they are pleasant here.

I like the pub feel to this place. It's close to my house and it's fun meeting friends there for darts and drinks after hanging out in Mt. Tabor Park. So glad they are smoke free now, that was a huge downside. Not the best fish and chips I've ever had, but pretty good.

This place must be the closest you can get to a english pub in town. Photos of princess diana on the wall, "brown sauce" which is like a werstersheir type zingy sauce they have in england, and lots of beer selection. Had the fish and chips. Great fish, not so hot about the chips, but the fish is sooo good that I didn't care. The price is affordable too at 10.50 compared to about 15 most places.

Best. Fish & Chips. Ever. The batter was just right and fried to perfection. It's hard to balance the "crispy goodness" and the "melting in your mouth" factors. Horse Brass pulled it off. Sadly, I get the fish and chips at every pub (or even pub-ish) place I go to and this - by far - was the best and is now the F&C to beat. Horse Brass has everything you want in a pub: delicious and plentiful brews, fantastic fried foods, and dart boards! The place smelled like a brewery - in a good way. The service was good. I was with a group of 5 and our server explained all about the different beers. I'll definitely be back.

So, some coworkers were all "HEY! Let's crash the 'company' holiday party that we weren't invited to!" OK! - The cheapest tequila shot is $4.25. And I had promised a round of them. ughhh... - The place looks and smells like Chili's or Outback or something. - The bathroom had one of those unsanitary community towel things to wipe your hands. Ever hear of hepatitis?!?! Let's get to replacing that sometime soon, shall we? - Some guy seated behind us was being all racist. This place is cool if you like to drink expensive beer and you're kinda lame. 3 stars though, 'cause I'd go back with trepidation.

Oh for those days of yore when adults congregated, smoke cigarettes indoors, and cursed like sailors. This was, in my experience the smokiest of smoky bars. This made your eyes water but added enough ambiance to make it worth it. This however is gone. Last night I went there with a group of ten. Accommodating a group that did not call can be tough but on this night the establishment was lightly attended. We found two tables that were about two feet apart and pushed them together only to have the server tell us that we could not move the table because it would be in her way to a table that had two people at it preparing to leave and another route to access it. she suggested a six person table elsewhere. We explained that we had more than that coming but she insisted. After we pulled up the ten chairs she had us go back and push the original two tables together. She in fact made it so uncomfortable that I wanted to ask everyone if we wanted to go somewhere else. This is the only truly bad service I have had here but with this being the first time going here since the smoking ban changed the atmosphere I don't plan to return. The food here is not bad, though nothing on the menu has proven to be anything I crave. They do have cheap beer available, Henry's at under $3 a pint. If you like micros the have a very good selection, I don't so this doesn't matter to me.

Awesome beer selection (Pliny the Elder on draft, woo hoo!), awesome fries, less than awesome service. No matter - we were playing Boggle at our table! I wish we didn't have to move on to another location - could have really had fun with the draft list.

Love Beer? Come here, because this is the place to be if you're in the SE! mixed drinks, micro beers, wine, and more! i like to drink, but i also like a nice atmosphere. you can walk into this place with any attire, any attitude, and any state of mind. just order something simple, a drink of your liking, and find a place for your moment: studying, lounging, chatting, drinking, and/or relaxing can make your day at the horse brass pub.

Smoking ban? Restaurants? Horse brass! But... but... ah well ok. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand cigarettes. I'll have a Shepheard's Hotel if I have to, but generally my asthma reminds me quickly not to do this. I am, however, a fond smoker of the tobacco pipe. Alas, this place was one of my few hang outs where I could indulge. Still, if it means that people who can't tolerate smoke can hang out at the Horse Brass, then I'm all for it. It was good to see them still alive and well after the ban. I also did notice that I tasted a bit more of the food without my pipe in hand. Not sure if that is really the point, but I digress. This is still one of my favorite pubs. After all this time I'd still belly up here before just about anywhere else. Thanks for keepin' me hooked, Horse Brass. review++.

Dear Horse Brass, All of the other reviewers go on and on about your great beer selection...Wow oh wow oh wow soooooooooooo much beer..... Stop. Even if you had ONE MILLION beers from all over the UNIVERSE, your bar would still be: 1) dark 2) stank 3) full of nasty, mean, uncaring waitresses who stare at you with bored, tired eyes. "Do you *want* to order?" "Nope, honey. I'm just here to look around..." 4) serve horrific, undercooked and/or overcooked food depending on your mood. A frozen-in-the-middle fry doesn't even net a reaction (positive or negative) from our waitress when we tell her the fries are literally still frozen in the middle. She must not have considered we would want new, fresh, actually cooked fries. 5) off the chart disgusting bathrooms (its a "hold it" type place) Sorry, Horse Brass. Its been difficult to share this with you but after many visits, my mind is still 100% unchanged. And I really, really wanted to like you. Love, Angela

The beer selections is MORE then suffice for myself. I've heard it been ragged on by what seems to be superhuman beer connisseurs, but I always am satisfied by it. Can't really speak for the brit authenticity of it, but that's none of my concern. The food is always maybe a dollar out of what I would want to pay, but the fish and chips is worth that. Always crowded, I wish there were more then 1 or 2 hostesses in a room full of patrons, but, I also am not their bookkeeper.

I was looking for a place that has Russian River Pliny the Elder IPA on tap, and it's worth stopping in just for that. But lo and behold the food is good too! Having been to England several times,I wouldn't consider "authentic British fare" to be a selling point, but the fish and chips are exceptional, the chicken pot pie is delicious, and the veggie pastie -- mmmMMM. One less than 5 stars because it's a bit grimy, although in this case it's almost a plus since it kind of adds to the the place's confortable, lived-in pub ambiance.

I've taken out-of-town friends here on a number of occasions, and they always marvel at the beer selection. The seasonal/rotating tap list is quite large and I don't think I've ever drank the same beer twice here. Did you know that they also make cocktails? Don't even think about it. Stick to the beer. The niceness of the staff is hit-or-miss. Some are super cool but others seem to have a perpetual frown on their face. We usually order the fish and chips if we're hungry. The fish is consistently good, however the fries are consistently sub-par. They're usually half burnt but rubbery at the same time. That's forgivable, though, because you can douse them in the malt vinegar or HP sauce.

I really liked this place. There is something about bars and dark rich wood that I really like, especially in the middle of winter when everything all rainy and wet outside. It's like coming into a cabin or something. You can just put your feet up and and relax. I met up with some friends here on a Sunday night and like most times I've been out on a Sunday in Portland there was a decent sized crowd (every place I go! I love this city). I had a couple of black cherry stout thing-ys and in general had a nice time. For me, this is kind of a good "warm up" bar. It's a place to go and meet up with friends and plan your night. I can't see staying here for much longer. One gripe? The waitress was realllly rude. I would have definitely given four stars if she hadn't been so rude to our table. Not only did it take her a hundred years to get our order and also the orders of the people who came after us, but she also acted as if she were pretty put out... and we were a super mellow table. That said, the cheese platter actually was pretty good. It had apples. :)

This is one of our favorite places in town. One of the best tap selections in the city and the food is always delicious. You can not beat the fish n chips and bread pudding, great quality and value. We usually like to stop by on weekday evenings and are always able to get a dartboard to ourselves.

I've been here on two occasions now. It definitely has a dark English pub feel to it. Being from the east coast, it had that old feel of an east coast bar. While the staff is quite friendly, they aren't very prompt. On both occasions, we found that we were waiting for the server to come back to refill our beers. They always have a great selection of local beers on tap and offer various sizes for tasting. As for the food, I've only had the sausages, but they were darn good! The sweet & hot mustard that they serve with them is quite tasty!

Mucho Thanks to my friend JP for turning me on to this place! It is surely going to become one of my favorite spots! This is going to be quick & to the point as to not cloud the beauty that is what it is. (Huh?) Anyway..... GREAT beers........ & lots of them!! Yay!! GREAT food......... well prepared....... delicious fish & chips! Yay!! Fun atmosphere.......... get there early if you want a table, or be prepared to wait a while......... P.S. ........it's worth the wait!

Come for the Scotch eggs and the beer selection. Don't come for the service. It's not that the servers are bad, they're just overwhelmed and since the place is a cramped with tables there's no room for more staff at any given time. And, maybe this is just me, but this place is easily 1000% douchier and frattier since the smoking ban. Stupid pink lungers.

Went here for the first time and was thoroughly impressed. First, its deceptively large. When you drive by the building you think that its going to be a sliver of a bar. Not so much, the interior is large, warm and friendly. They have a great beer selection. I went with a German beer called Schneider Aventinus, 96/100 beer advocate rating, and well deserved. I also ordered the reuben sandwich and it is damn good. I'd recommend the bar to anyone who wants a great pub experience.

Ok, I was in love with this place the first time I came in. It has a great atmosphere and the beer and food is good. However, the last time I came in I had the most awful experience with our service that i will literally never go in there again. It's not worth it. She was down right condescending. It was so bad that I tried to find a manger to speak with about it. However, when I approached the bartender to ask for a manager the response I got was " we all just manage ourselves." I don't think that is working out for them.

Horse Brass gets a solid 'above average' rating of four stars. I've held off on rating it, 'cause I haven't really felt like I've given it a chance... but after several trips, here's what I've got. The food is really good. There's a variety, and nothing I've eaten (or seen people eating) there has been bad, or something I would not wish to eat again in the future. The beer is also really good. There are all kinds of beers, from all kinds of places, and I can always find something that's good, as opposed to other pubs I could mention where I have to fall back on 'whatever dark stuff you've got on tap.' Before it became non-smoking I wasn't a huge fan - but now that the air has cleared, I've kind of become a fan. It's noisy, but it's the kind of place that you expect to be noisy. I'm okay with it. Highlights - the 'Scotch Egg' (try it!) and the hot mustard stuff (TRY IT!) the latter is apparently a secret recipe which I could not convince the waitress to give up. I'm scheming to experiment until I stumble across the formula, though.

So I started out this review thinking Horse Brass was a 4 star kind of place. But then I realized this British style pub is a Portland beer institution for me and meets two of my main criteria for five stars: 1) I feel a horrible twinge of longing if I pass by that can only be rectified by stopping in. 2) If I'm willing to change out of my pjs and drive across town to go there. True story. I was craving one of their Scotch eggs (egg wrapped in sausage and deep fried), we viewed their guest taplist online, which is always vast and kept up to date and it was decided. Out of the pajamas, into proper clothes, kidnapped our friend and off we went on a fantastic beer voyage. So what if the service is sometimes a little slow? The place has chairs and tables crammed into every nook and cranny, so it holds a lot of people. And all of them are thirsty and throwing back those 20 oz Imperial pints of delicious beer like it's running out. With that much beer flowing, I'm actually impressed at how quickly we get our beer sometimes. I've never once caught attitude from the staff and even better, they are all really knowledgeable about the beer. Our server last night was probably the fastest I've had and even crossed the beers they were out of off our menu before we could start perusing. And peruse you will, there are over 50 beers on tap here at any given time. They always have the classics like Black Butte Porter, Terminal Gravity IPA, Blue Dot IPA, Trumer Pils, Rogue Hazelnut and Guinness. Then there's the guest tap of awesomeness featuring great Northwest and California brews. Several cask options. And the hook: The coming soon beers so you can plan your next visit. I come here for some favorite beers I know won't be on tap anywhere else in town and also if I have a friend who doesn't know what they like, so they can try a lot of different breweries and styles at once. If you can't find a beer you like here, you just aren't trying hard enough! If you don't do beer, they have a full bar and some wine as well. The food is British comfort/pub food, heavy on the sausage. Meat pies, fish and chips and yes, my beloved Scotch egg. Not a ton of options for vegetarians, but they do have salads, cheese plates and a gardenburger, and considering the neighborhood, you should be able to find something else nearby. I even discovered last night that they do breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays in case you want to get your beer on early. Our kidnapped friend? He woke up the next morning on his couch with no recollection of how he got there, but he did forever afterward know what a Scotch egg was and where he could find, dare I say it, the best taplist in town.

This was the second time I've been in. The first I had the plowman's lunch and a beer at the bar. It was a Friday night and BUSY. The food came out quickly as well as the beer. The tap-list was great and the bartender attentive and friendly. The second time I went was not as great. It was a Wednesday, not busy, and we had normal orders. It took a long time for anyone to recognize us, the tap list was mediocre, and the food was a long wait. Everything tasted great but at the end of the night the waiter forgot our check 4 times. It was OK because we were with family and we were talking but I wasn't as excited about this place this time. The two experiences cancelled each other out and I don't think I will be going back.

In heaven there is no beer, That's why we drink it here. And when we're all gone from here Our friends will be drinking all the beer Be one who drinks the finest ales. Drink them every day without fail. Even when you have drank enough, Remember that ale is wonderful stuff. The Horse Brass Pub is heaven for the lover of brew. Oh, and the food is pretty darn good too. What else is there to say? PS: - first verse from the old song "In Heaven There is no Beer" (look it up, it's a fun one) - the second is an old Irish toast/quote. - the third is from me

I'm sure if you ask one of my friends (whom I went with to the Horse Brass yesterday) what they thought of it, they'd probably answer: "It was good; it was fun." And YES, the experience was good, and the experience was fun, but I'll tell you: that had nothing to do with the food. My guy suggested I give the Horse Brass 5 stars, but then again, he himself would give 5 stars to any dingy bar that served him beer & food quickly (also, he'd eat cardboard if there was a pancake painted on it). Yes, the food & drinks came quickly, but that does equal a 5 star rating? No, no it doesn't. How about having a fun, old English pub-ish atmosphere with lots of rambunctious people? Well.... Maybe. But if your signature dish is fish and chips, and the chips turn out to be burnt sequoia-colored and chewy (and your fish is so oily I feel like a Crisco container), you definitely get knocked down a star. Blech, but a fun blech!

Damn, I missed quite a spectacle the other day. A crazed woman with an infant in a stroller came in to get her beer on (I don't think the baby was interested). Apparently she was on board for a long while, too. As the bar became more crowded and afternoon drifted toward evening, she got up to yell at staff AND customers that it was too loud in there and her baby couldn't sleep. What? Please don't come to the Brass if you: want to be pampered by staff (service is fine, sometimes slow, but you come here for beer), want to drink crappy beer, or want to eat healthy food. You won't generally be greeted, and if you're not a regular, you might not get as much attention, but such is life everywhere. The Brass is a pub all the way, and any time you pop in after a while, you will know at least one person there. It very much is Portland's public house, I will always love the Brass, and my gut proves it.

Great place to have a pint and chat with friends. The scotch egg is artery clogging goodness, and the pasties are tasty. Service is friendly, but they have a common tendency to run out of beers on tap. That's OK though, since there are always a slew of others that are available. It's kindof a different experience since there's no longer smoking allowed indoors in Oregon. This used to be one of the smokiest places in town, but now the air is clear and ready for all who enjoy a good pint.

I've been here a couple of times and have never been disappointed. Today I had lunch and a couple of beers and have to say, this was one of the best service experiences ever for me. The bartender, John (I didn't grab his last name), was fantastic. He was cutting up with some regulars while waiting on several people at the bar. John provided some excellent beer choices, most notably the Hair Of The Dog's "Blue Dot" IPA....Oh my lord it is amazing. (Very balanced and extremely tasty) John, keep doing what you're doing. Cooks in the kitchen, awesome Fish n' Chips. Thank you for being so great and having the worlds best beer selection. -Crosby Kneale

This place is way bigger inside than the facade would indicate, and the servers always seem overwhelmed as a result. I spend more time waiting for drinks and such here than almost any other place I've been in Portland. But the food is good, at least, if it's your bag; English fare is really not my cup of tea (*wink*). At least the place has a warm yet anonymous feel to it, since it is busy enough to feel welcoming and also like no one will overhear you. Great place to go catch up with friends, but I don't feel any remarkable affection for it. I'd normally give it three stars, but I think it deserves a whole extra star for the truly epic drink list.

You won't serve us Irish car bombs on St. Patty's Day (yes, we're well aware we should've outgrown them by now)but you will serve us four shots of whisky. Each. Plus two black and tans. Each. I will never understand the English sense of humor. Plus one star for having a piece of cardboard cut to fit the top of the toilet tank instead of actual porcelain. I'm sure that doesn't violate any health codes as long as it's a new piece everyday.

This neighborhood often feels like a small town tucked up against a cute little mountain. Everything we need is here within walking distance, including one of the most famous beer pubs in Cascadia, maybe even the world. This is where Portland craft brewing got much of its first public exposure. This was one of the first bars willing to take a chance on something outside of the Blitz/Olympia/Budwesier bottle. This is my local pub, so my opinion might be a little biased. They have one of the most interesting beer lists in town. Sit at the bar if you can, table service is stretched thin on a busy night.

Went for dinner and drinks with a few friends on a Saturday night recently, had a great experience. Food was good (fish and Chips) had the Banger Sausage, delish!. Prices were good and so was the service. Will be going back someday...

Oregon Smoking Ban + Horse Brass = FINALLY!!! The Horse Brass is the epitome of an English neighborhood pub, but with a WAY better selection of beer. Enter into the dingy confines, and you will find walls covered with nick nacks, pictures, tomes, odes, flags, pennants, soccer club memorabilia, photos, paintings, and just about anything else you can hang on a wall. The motif is wood, yellow-painted walls (made even more yellow from years of hardcore smoking), and more dark wood. For years the Horse Brass has been an iconic deep SE neighborhood bar known for its fantastic and hugely varied selection of micro- and import- beers on tap and cask. I have no idea how many different beers are on tap at any given time, but it has to be at least 30, and at very least 5 more on cask. Most of these beers are hard to find, impossible to find, or at least downright niche. Many are local, and most all are hand selected as delicious. The food consists of your standard English pub fare, with the standouts being the fish n' chips (battered style, and quite good) and the Scotch egg (a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage then deep fried). Neither is healthy, both are par pub food, and your heart will hold it against you if you eat either, ever. For so long, this was the bar I wish I could go to. Laid back, fun, jovial, friendly, welcoming, and, well, community. But it's been so... so... SO... smoky. Always. Already low lit, add dark wood, yellow walls, and a thick haze of cigarette and cigar smoke, and, well, standard visibility was usually about 4 feet. The place was so smoky that you can see at least a 20% variation in shade darkness on the walls where pictures or memorabilia once were. Picture a 90 year old smoker's teeth... someone who smoked their whole life a pack a day. That's the color of the walls. So alas, for so long, I have lamented that I can't go enjoy the DOWNRIGHT AMAZING beer selection at the Horse Brass for fear of emphysema. WELL NO MORE! It's still dingy, the wood is still dark, and only 2 days into 2009, it still smells like an ashtray, but the air is clear, and the bar tonight was more packed than I think I have ever seen it. I could see from one end of the bar to the other. I was able to leave my respirator at home. I enjoyed 3 fantastic beers, and came home smelling just as smoke-free as when I left. Now don't get me wrong, I respect the freedom to own your own business and do what you want. I have my own issues with this smoking ban, but I'll keep those to myself, because DAMN, I do enjoy me a good beer, and now I can enjoy so many good beers at the Horse Brass and not smoke a pack of second hand while doing so. Consider me a regular.

What else can be said? It's the FREAKIN' HORSE BRASS!!!!!! As we approach the one year anniversary of Don Younger's passing, let's never forget the man that made this place what it is today. If you haven't been here before, you must go. If you have, then you already know. Best craft beer place in the country, bar none. So let's all lift a pint in Don Younger's honor, and thank him for allowing us to all enjoy this legendary establishment. Remember, "it's not about the beer, it's about the beer!" Cheers!

The Horse Brass is a SE fixture. A British style pub with dark wood with predominantly long narrow tables. Very good tap selection with a large selection of rotating guest beers. I enjoy the atmosphere although it is fairly loud on busy nights like Fridays. We will go here to play games at some of the larger tables in the back (cribbage, Settler's, Spades, etc) and they have several decent dart boards. The food leaves something to be desired, it's British food after all. And the service can be slow, although I think this often is due to staffing as I don't recall every having problems with the servers themselves.

I always bring my out of town friends to the Horse Brass. Wonderful beer selection, cozy, homey bar. The food is okay - their fries aren't the best.

Where's the happy hour? Where is it? And get rid of all these new, dumb soccer fans. Let's get on with it. Love the fresh fish. Not a fan of the soggy fries. NEVER get the coffee. Starbuck's Via (instant coffee) is better and that ain't sayin' much. LOVE all the taps. NOT happy about NO happy hour -- especially since it's the closest bar to Beth Willie's abode. The owner is kinda a creepy jerk. Enjoy how my friends from out of town ALWAYS get wasted here and must be carried a block home. And a pitcher of BOONT. Oh, Horse Brass. That's a better deal than buying it at the store. Breakfast. Not so good. Will do in a pinch.

Hands down my favorite place in town!! Cheers to Fred Strong!! The most amazing collection of beer I've seen at one place! The foods great too...This place is mostly packed any given day of the week and it gets kinda hard to get the attention of the servers at times...but its worth every bit. Love this place.

Awesome selection of beers. Great fish (and chips minus the chips), it's halibut and the batter is great. You can also get a half order, which is two pieces instead of four. The chips however need to be improved. I bit into at least three that were hard on the inside. They could use some seasoning and another 5 minutes cooking and the whole meal would be great. Our waiter had what seemed like half of the place and it was packed on a Thursday. He was running around like crazy but still got all our orders right, props to him!

great pub nice atmosphere and the staff is on it , i prefer sports and redneck bars due to the cheap beers and pool tables , which they dont have either.. but a quick moving pub aesthetic and good beers your thing then this is top notch

Fav place in Portland! - amazing beer list - good British food - 5 dart boards - good service - real British pub feel (not just an American bar with an Irish name) 4th time here and we love this place!

We came in last week sometime. Quiet inside but there were plenty of people there on a Saturday afternoon. We seated ourselves and sat around for about 15 min before anyone acknowledged us. The waitress brought us menus and asked if we wanted anything to drink. I wasn't sure exactly and asked for a sample of a particular beer on the menu. The waitress returned a few minutes later with my boyfriend's beer and explained since it was their "anniversary" week that they do not give out samples. I was a little shocked. I have never heard if a pub that wouldn't give out a tasting sample. We put in an order for fish and chips. My boyfriend and I needed a snack so we split an order. About 25 min later our food came out. The fish and chips were delicious! Our waitress never checked on us after we got our food which was pretty annoying because I ran out of my water and had nothing to drink. Eventually she came by and asked if we were done. Overall, fish and chips were good. Service sucked.

Nice atmostphere. Good beer selection. Passable bar food. I have heard of rude service here before, but this was not the case when I visited. Our server took the time to proactively modify our beer menus to reflect the most recent tapped kegs.

Decided to go out for lunch yesterday. Thought I was going to get fish and chips but ended up with the halibut sandwich. I enjoyed it and liked the toasted bun. The best part of the meal is just the atmosphere of the place. This is a very cool place with a lot of history. I was hoping they would have some pictures of the building as it was originally.

I can't believe I only gave them 4 stars before. I must've been feeling stingy. This place isn't for everyone but for those that enjoy quality beer served up fresh then this place is definitely 5 stars. Cheers

Always always always try their food special for the day! Horse Brass is an english style neighborhood pub. They make a daily special for food that usually sells out. They are also the only bar that carried a Rogue Beer that has one hundreds of awards. The man who opened Horse Brass was one of the first and most fervent supporters of Rogue Beer and they make the award winning beer for their tap only. They have a great beer selection in addition to that and its one of my top 3 places to play darts in town.

Loses 2 stars because internet reception in neighborhood is bad and there's no wifi. Other than that it's a good british style pub. Their stated opinion on the wifi is that they don't want people showing up and working on their novel etc. on the wifi. As a patron, I could care less that people are "working" while they drink.

This is my favorite place in the Portland Metro area. They have just the right combination of food quality, ambiance, agreeable clientele and, of course, beer selection. The first thing that you need to know about the Horse Brass Pub is that you go there expecting an awesome beer selection with good food to go along. You go there expecting a dark and almost dreary place where you can sip on a pint and forget the world of noise and machines on the outside. You go there for a working class, no frills waitstaff that is more than happy to wait on and accommodate you so long as you are not a pain in the... Once you have down the first, and really only, prerequisite knowledge that you need to enter the Horse Brass you are properly equipped for an excellent evening. The first thing that you have to discuss when discussing The Horse Brass is their beer selection. The beer list can basically be broken up into two distinct categories. Horse Brass has an amazing list of beers that are always on tap. Some of the highlights here include 'The Fred Strong Ale', "Old Rasputin Imperial Stout', and the 'Hazelnut Brown Ale'. In addition to the comprehensive list of standards, the Horse Brass has a list of approximately 30 constantly rotating beers on tap. They update the list once a week on their website. However, the turn over on many of the more popular selections is much quicker than that. Horse Brass always replaces a tapped keg, however. So now worries. The beers lean heavily towards the 'northwest style ales'. That is to say, that these beers are heavy with an aggressive amount of hops and serious levels of alcohol percentage. However, there is no need to fret if hops and high alcohol content are not your thing. Both the standard and guest list contain a hefty list of stouts, porters, pales and lagers that would put most pubs to shame. In addition, the guest list always features several belgians and one 'specialty' or rare beer. They also serve a 'more than honest' 20oz. pint. The Horse Brass also offers a decent selection of specialty beers in the bottle. I have rarely looked at the list. It is likely that you will not either. The beer list here is so massive, comprehensive and overall fantastic that ordering food here can seem like a secondary thought. And, in a way, it is. But that is not to say that they do not have some good food. They are never going to compete with your nice restaurant where the food, in and of itself, is the attraction. But they do blow most pub's food selection and quality out of the water. The Horse Brass focuses on an English style fare. So you may not get quite the dish you were expecting when you go out to the pub. But their dishes are tasty none the less. One of my personal favorites is the Fish and Chips. This place does it right serving fresh fried halibut with a side of fries, cole slaw and all the lemon and high quality malt vinegar your little heart desires. The English Ploughmem's Lunch, the Reuben, Burger and Ny Steak Sandwich are other personal favorites. And, of course, you have to try the Scotch egg. In conclusion, the Horse Brass may not be for everyone. If you are looking for the typical chic, hip date night spot, with the exotic wine list and foreign sounding food that you have never heard of that is so prevalent in Portland, then this place is not for you. However, if you want a place where you can just plop down, either alone, on a date or with a group of friends and have a hefty pint and some good food then you need look no further. Overall, they have the best beer selection in town (my apologies the Bailey's Tap Room), really good food and just the right atmosphere

In our quest to find "our" British-esque pub, we have visited Horse Brass multiple times. It's never blown our minds, but it is comfortably divey, with a great beer selection, and pretty good food. Most importantly, Horse Brass boasts my favorite Ploughman's Lunch in the city. I am a hardcore Ploughman's aficionado, having eaten dozens of them when I lived and travelled in England, and nobody gets it right in PDX except for the Horse Brass. There's the lovely cheese assortment, the tart apples, the Branston pickle. Yum. I'm ready to go get some right now.

If you're reading this, chances are you already know how what an amazing selection of beers the Horse Brass has, and that the atmosphere can't be beat! All of those bases have been covered so I'd like to focus on something else: the service. My last visit was truly something special. It was one of those visits where the service is so good you leave feeling as if what you paid wasn't nearly enough and the tip you left, no matter how generous, was lacking. The bartender here was so friendly, so genuine, and so fun to talk to that I felt like I'd made a friend in the few hours I was there. My girlfriend felt the same. Amusingly, this was the last place we visited during our trip and we both agreed it would be the first place we'd visit on our return. Other beer bars take notice, this is how you do it.

I started going to the Horse Brass way back in 1987, and have been something of a regular for some time. I went again last Sunday night, and it was my last time! I have just had it with the crappy service provided there. I came in around midnight, and there was only one server on duty, Yevette, and she took about 15 minutes to take my order and deliver me a glass of beer. The beer was marked on the menu as being 20oz for 7.75, and she said, "it only comes in glasses" not informing me that it was still the same 7.75 for an 8oz glass. Then she dissapeared until she delivered my friends food, and despite my glass being mostly empty, she did not take an order for my next drink--yep the glass was mostly dry by the time I got another beer. Then at around 1:40 she came and dropped the check, and did not offer to get me another beer for last call (which by the way came from the bar at 2, 20 minutes later. Next when I questioned the dollar per ounce beer, she made up some sort of conversation and would not budge on the price, and was condecending to me and my date. Her excuse being that I always drink expensive imports (this was from New Belgium in Colorado by the way), and this was no exception. She said she would take it off the ticket, but would be forced to leave a note explaining that it was me, that was stiffing them. Yuk! This place has been on a downward spiral for year, and this is just a continuing example of what a crappy place it has become. A while back they sold me a 10 dollar glass of beer claiming it was St. Louis Frambois, but in fact it was Lindamens, and once again, refused the refund, telling me I didn't know what I was talking about. Go to Bazi, or Bailey's, or even the Victory--The brass is now the Ass!

A friend and I walked into the Horse Brass to a crowded foyer, and overheard another party talking about putting their name on "the waiting list", so we walked through the crowd towards the bar in hopes of putting our names on the illusive list as well. Before we were even through the pack, a server snagged us and informed us that we were crowding ahead of people who were already waiting for a table. We asked her about "the list", and she informed us that there "is no list", and that it's "first come, first serve". Ok, we just needed to know that information, but not with the tone of accusation that we were bullying ahead of the crowd in hopes of getting a table first. The Horsebrass has one of the best selections of tap beer in the city, and darn good fish and chips, but when service is rude and poor, I'll find other places to dine.

I've never tried any of the food but the beer menu is absolutely amazing. Minus one star just because they seem to run out of some of the beers pretty fast. Feels like a real English pub!

I LOVE that it's right across from the laundromat and has a mean salad. I usually top out at four stars, that's why this one gets three. The space is not something I would get excited about, but it's solid and the beer selection (even though I'm not a beer guy) is fantastic. Anyone will be able to find something. The service is kind of hit and miss, though generally apathetic. Maybe that's their schtick. But the service is the star-ding for me.

We stopped here on our last trip to Portland. We thought we would just have a beer and check it out before going to dinner elsewhere. 3 hours later, we had enjoyed one of the best beer lists ever and discovered how much we love scotch eggs and meat pie. Comfortable atmosphere and salt of the earth waitstaff. Couldn't have found a better place to spend an afternoon in Portland.

This is easily one of the best beer bars in PDX. Huge beer selection served at the correct temp and with the right kind of glassware for the style. This is a beer snob's dream. They have several beers on nitro and cask as well. Fish and chips are freaking amazing as well. Another plus is they have darts. Love this place!!

My favorite bar in Portland. Great beer selection, yummy food (scotch egg!), and totally unpretentious. They have a large beer selections, but I actually felt that this was one place where I wasn't getting judged for the beer I ordered, unlike every other bar where I had to know the exact hop and grain profile of a beer before they gave me the time of day. Here I could just drink my beer, chat, eat food, and throw some darts. Kind of like what you are supposed to do at a pub. It's dark, relaxing, and friendly. I can dig it.

Meh indeed. Lots of beer to choose from. So- there's that. The fish was good- the chips were lame. If you're into pubs so loud you can't hear yourself think, unjustifiably grouchy bartenders, and going home smelling as though you deep-fried your entire body, this is the place for you.

Beer lovers' paradise. I'd always heard that this place is packed. We must have scored when we slipped into the large, air-conditioned pub during the beer festival weekend in the early-ish afternoon. The place wasn't even at half capacity. The Brass looks just like something out of England/Wales/etc. It's dark. Sorta dingy. Lots of wood. Taps and taps of beer. You can expect traditional, hearty pub food, too. Scotch eggs. Fish and chips. Huge, hearty portions. Service was slow and lazy, which is pretty much how the afternoon felt. We weren't in a hurry, but just taking in another stop on Beer Tour 2010. I'm not a beer fanatic by any means, but I definitely don't mind trying new things. I'm the weird girl who will drink thick heavy beers on a hot summer day. Those bathrooms, which sport the virtually obsolete revolving cloth dryer, creeps me the hell out. While not a germaphobe, the thought of everyone's gross hands all over it is just disgusting. Leave it for the fun visual (or the brave souls who want to use it), and give the rest of us something else, kthx. My shorts worked. If you're a beer person, you'll love it here. While I could go either way, I would never head over knowing full well that the place is crowded.

The Horse Brass truly is and will always be a personal favorite...First off, their beer selection is top notch. Anywhere that I can get a pint of Hair of the Dog Blue Dot Double IPA on tap has to be at the top of my list (ok, I take that back...Henry's has it and they will not make any top list of mine). The Horse Brass is the quintessential English Pub...complete with darts, authentic menu and air that weighs heavy with smoke. Great place to gather with a group of friends, as it is often void of the pretentious and trendy crowd that has suddenly appeared in our great beer drinking town.

We were doing our laundry up the street so we decided to walk to HBP for some lunch. The first thought that entered my mind was that it actually seemed like a true pub. Dimly lit, dark wood, kinda creaky when you walk. I loved the atmosphere and off the wall eclectic decor. You could tell this place has been the local pub forever just by looking around. It just felt comfortable and laid back. We decided to try the fish and chips, which were fantastic! Fries still had the skins on them and the fish was flaky and fresh tasting. Their beer menu was crazy..it was hard to focus on just one. Excellent place, good service, fun environment. .Now we have something to look forward to on laundry day. Cheers!

Went here on a friend's recommendation and was not steered wrong. Fish and chips are supposedly the best in Portland. It was pretty good. You get a choice of 2 or 4 fish. I should've said 2 since the fish is pretty big and flaky. The batter is really good too. Chips were ok. Steak and mushroom pie was excellent! Light flaky buttery crust. Filling was good and the gravy excellent. The potato chips that came with it you can tell they make themselves. Well salted already. I was told to get the Scottish egg but this was a lot of food already for 2 people. Great beer selection of Oregon and California microbrews. Some German ones, liquor too!

Walking into Horse Brass for the first time was a step back from the trendy modernistic bars with fusion cocktails and fancy decor. Instead it showed an old-world charm with dark woods and a musty smell. What did I come for? The beer and perhaps a game of steep tip. If unique, hard to find, one-off micro brews are your cup of er ... tea then the 53 beers on tap should provide everything your taste buds desire. While awaiting my first of many malty samplings I felt compelled to try an English food offering from the menu. The fish n' chips sounded right up my alley but I opted instead for the Scotch egg. I'm sure my heart wasn't happy with my decision but my stomach in fact was. They take a hardboiled egg, wrap it in sausage, deep fry it and serve it with a spicy brown mustard. It's a physicians worst nightmare but worth the risk if you're under forty. My palate insisted I try the unusual suspects, like the cream-soda stout or the black-cherry jubilee but they were sold out. I hear this happens often so I suggest ordering the first beer to strike your fancy without hesitation. If throwing pointed objects in a crowded room full of strangers excites you then the four dart boards should feed your frenzy. I noticed yelling and cheering are encouraged even if your bulls eye hits your buddy. Unfortunately no darts leapt from my hand this time but perhaps that was best after seven libations and deep fried fat. I hear this is also the place to catch some football or soccer to you Timber fans. So if you have any fanatical, raving loony, obscene alcoholic friends go to Horse Brass and enjoy pounding some suds! .

They microwaved the pot pie. They microwaved a pastry. It was soggy rubber. Although we paid $10 for it we couldn't eat it. The halibut fish and chips was so overdone, the consistency was similar to overcooked chicken. Very dry and tough. Honestly I kept poking at it with my fork insisting to my husband that it was chicken. The coleslaw was definitely Reser's. We were very sad to have to pay $40 for it all. It was seriously bad and I don't think management cares. Funny that a few reviews below mention unkept bathroom and what the employees do. My hubby found no soap and wondered what the cooks do after do their business. I guess it's a regular occurrence? Ug Never again.

I've only been in a couple of times so far. My voice class likes to go here en masse after a performance. Love the dark cherry stout, and fish and chips. Only had one slightly sour-attitude from a waitress/barmaid, but figured she had a bad day. The other guy who took our orders was quick and efficient. It's rather noisy and you have to lean in to hear the person next to you, but overall the atmosphere felt positive and pub-like. Too bad they lock the piano, we have an excellent piano player.

Beer, beer, beer. Local beer lovers love the Horse Brass for their amazing selection of fantastic beer. So, I can't believe I am doling out a measly three stars for the venerable Horse Brass, known and loved in Portland, and apparently the world over thanks to Esquire Magazine for their AMAZING beer selecting and English pub flavor. (...but then again I don't know if "the world" really reads Esquire). The beer selection, as all have noted, IS fabulous. Yes, you really do get a multi-page menu just for the beer. And the bartenders are the shit--they know their stuff and I could learn more about the current happenins in the world o' beer in five minutes at Horse Brass than I probably could most places in town. So...beer + bartenders = 5 stars. The problem is, I had to drag my review down thanks to the rest of the place. Beer does not a 5 star make. As my friend Angela pointed out (in her meager one star review, using the word "stank" to pretty much sum it up) is that everything ELSE about Horse Brass needs some love. Since the smoke cleared out, you can see how filthy the place is, and while I don't mind a place that looks loved and lived in, especially a neighborhood pub...this is actually sort of gross and tips the scales from "lived in" to "Ewww". Blech. 1 star. Combine the nasty filthiness, which has you wanting to do a load of laundry as soon as you leave the place, with the bathroom. As the other reviewer noted: they still have that long cloth hand dryer thing hanging on the wall. You know the one: the one that is always wet with no clean dry patch on it. The one that probably no one in this country has wanted to put their hands on since like 1950 or the last century or whenever it was we learned about germs. Right now every place in Portland has those signs up telling you how to prevent H1N1. At Horse Brass, you get the cloth hand dryer thingie. The cool nostalgia of "real cloth" is cancelled out by my fear of touching it. Now I have no place left to dry my hands except on my pants (the same pants I am feeling eager to wash as soon as I get home). bathroom = -1. What drug my review down (cause I am actually willing to overlook the bathroom and just avoid it) was the service from the waitress, and my food. Not the bartenders, who were fine, just the mean waitress. Everyone raved about the fish and chips, so I couldn't wait to try them. The Fish = yum. It was hot and crispy and came with a bottle of vinegar on the side. Yum. The Chips = WTF? The fries were cold dead things with hard centers, laying there disgusting and lifeless next to the tasty fish. I thought maybe it was just me. Nope. Everyone had cold dead fries, and our friend said the LAST time he ate there he had cold dead fries and had complained then, too. I snarfed through my delicious fish waiting for our waitress to reappear, which she didn't do until the end. She cast several wary glances towards out table but seemed to lack that waitress radar that tells you something is amiss at table 5. When she finally returned, we told her the fries weren't cooked in the middle. She gave us a dirty look and shrugged. "So, what? Do you want more?", she said. I'm just sayin, if I were a waitress I would probably offer to comp the fries or bring some hot cooked ones out, pronto. What's with the sour attitude? So I can't give them 5 stars for fish and chips. Fish MINUS chips, maybe. And the service of course is a -1. Since everyone used the scotch egg reference in their reviews, I will describe Horse Brass using that analogy: A scotch egg is a hardboiled egg, wrapped in sausage, and then deep fried. Sounds tasty, right? So imagine the fine beer selection at Horse Brass is the tasty egg in the middle that you can't wait to get to, but you have to eat your way through a crusty fatty outer shell to get to it. (well, some people like the crusty outer shell, but others can't really tolerate it). The Horse Brass has 5-star beer and knowledgeable bartenders plus 1 star everything else. Clean the place, ditch the mean waitress, and you'll be back up there in my book. For just beer nirvana, if you can tolerate the rest, you'll probably love this place.

The good: Beer selection Atmosphere EPL games Most of the food The bad: Beer selection (let me explain, hold on!) The service, the servers The bathrooms Okay, so it seems that the horse brass is a rather love or hate establishment depending on what you like in your watering holes. I for one love that they have a huge beer selection for people who want it. I, myself, don't particularly love having a huge selection. Usually there is so many to choose from I only look at a few, then decide. Sometimes I just choose the first one I see. Sure this place is a little dirty, has a little attitude, and a little grit to it. Oh, and since we're on attitude, lets talk about the servers. Sometimes they can be great and other times it can be the most frustrating thing. Not being able to order a drink or get my check for a good 30 to 45 minutes is ridiculous. Servers disappearing for long periods of time, is also WTF. The place gets so busy and overrun that the servers are obviously going to get an attitude with patrons. Alright. The bathrooms are dirty, and only having 2 available places to do your duty for a place this big and busy has to be a violation somehow. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes it's awesome. Other times, abysmal. I really do like the horse brass as an establishment in concept. But as for going at really heavy traffic times, it's almost a lost cause. Oh btw. I forgot to mention, and I'm too lazy to scroll back up to write this, NO HAPPY HOUR!!!

You probably already know that Horse Brass... - has an assload of beers on tap, and they change quickly. Upside: always something new and delicious to try. Downside: your new favorite could disappear quickly. Upside: see first upside. - has a killer Scotch egg. I mean this metaphorically and literally. If you have a lot of Scotch eggs, you will die sooner than you would have otherwise. - has sometimes slow and less-than-stellar service, but they know their shit about beers, so it's forgivable. - has dartboards, and during lazy afternoons, is about the most authentic place in town to hide out, drink some brews, and play a few rounds. You may not know about Horse Brass: - The men's room sign reads "Lads". After a few pints, that resembles "Ladies" quite strongly, and mistakes are easily made. You've been warned, girls. Yours is called "Lasses" here. Overall, my favorite British-Isles pub in Portland so far. And I do love a good Irish/Scottish/British pub.

I finally had a chance to visit the Horse Brass since the smoking ban has taken affect. And WOW.... it's like a different place. First of all, it is even more busy on weekends, and I didn't think that this could happen. I arrived around 8:00 on a Friday to meet up with friends and there was a WAIT! Like 10 people crammed right inside the door waiting to be seated. Weird. And they had a guy at the door keeping order and checking IDs. Again, weird. Fortunately, my friends already had a table and I joined them without having to wait. And, because I really love this place, I would wait if need be. Because of the lack of smoke, I truly believed I enjoyed my beer more. I will be back. But next time, it will be a Tues, at like, 4:00pm.

I really like the horse brass these days. My first visit was before the smoking ban, and while I enjoyed it then, there were too many other good options in town that were smoke free, so I didn't return until later. Now it's a regular stop for me. I love the atmosphere here. It's a dark, cozy, unpretentious, english style pub. While this bar is fairly large, it's usually relatively full, with both customers and cheer. Most of the decor is vintage UK breweriana, with some older oregon brewery stuff for good measure. The quality for both food and drink is very good. While there are a pretty extensive number of taps, you'll only find craft micro's and imports on the list. The halibut fish and chips is my favorite in town (sorry hawthorne fish house!), and the daily specials never disappoint. On numerous visits, I couldn't help buy feel like I was eating a good hearty home cooked meal. The service here is generally pretty good, but when it's busy, it can get a little slow. Any time I've had a question about a beer, the bartenders and servers have been knowledgeable about the products their serving. The selection here is constantly changing, but is generally pretty good. My only pliny the younger was from the brass. They are the only place in town that got russian river publication when it came out. They had a deschutesapolooza event a few years back with an Abyss vertical and other vintage treats that was awesome. I already mentioned the food, but I'll go one step further. If I'm on the east side, and want good beer AND food, this is usually my pick. I think the food is always solid, and you can't beat the prices on it either - leaves more for beer! That brings me to value. I think the beers are always priced right, and the food prices are even better. Combined with the atmosphere, quality, and service, I'm never unhappy when I get my tab.

Just so you know, the HBP DESERVES 5 STARS! But.... everyone knows that...so it is super crowded on most nights of the week. Eat the fish and chips, pretty much the only passable ones in Portland, authentic and delicious with brown sauce and vinegar! Beer selection is good, the list is informative. Wait-staff are pleasant enough. Being an anglophile, I applaud HPB for their authentic pub vibe. Great for groups, though, again, it gets busy in the evenings. Certainly worth braving the crowds to sample delicious brew and awesome food.

The Horse Brass has been on my list of bars to try for just about forever. So when my friend suggested we head there during our two woman pub crawl I didn't think twice. We took a spot at the bar and I started perusing the beer list. It really wasn't as impressive as I was expecting. Only one beer on there I'd never had before. At least it wasn't a hard choice of what to order. And then we waited. For about 10 minutes in that same spot by the bar. At first we were polite and patient. Then we decided we may have to make more of an effort to get the bartender's attention. We attempted eye contact. The people sitting next to us tried to help us flag him down. Nothing. So we moved to the other end of the bar where he appeared to be paying people more attention. Here we quickly attracted some attention - "Get out of the way! You can't stand here! Get out of my way!" Thanks miss server bitch. We politely told her we had been out of the way for a quite a while, and we'd gladly move if someone would serve us a drink. Nothing. Back to the other end of the bar. Same routine for another five minutes. Fuck this. And Fuck you, Horse Brass.

i was there last night and I felt that the bartender was short and rude. the waitress was nice, though. Food is Ok and the beer selection rocks. If it wasn't for the pompous bartender I'd give it four stars.

What a disappointment. Worst service I've had in years. Burnt food. Beer advertised not available. Tried two different choices. The bill had stuff on it we didn't order or get. The waitress was incompetent and rude. The management was not interested. Will they survive the death of the owner. Maybe but they need to listen to their customers.

5 stars for sure. If you love beer like I do, then this is a place you will love. They usually have at least 20 taps and plenty of bottles if you need. For real beer heads they usually have 4 cask conditioned beers. They have a great selection of whisky as well. The food is good, not great (English style pub fare), but who cares with there beer list.

I've been to pubs in England and this is the only place I've been that comes close. Very Noisy at certain points of the night, Dart Boards, Insane collection of beer, really cool decor. Best Fish and Chips I've ever had. Come here often!

Oh my goodness- their sausage roll is soooo good and reminds me of home. A little on the small side, but I was just estatic to have some comfort food. The bar itself really does boast a great selection of beers on tap which are good fun to try. The atmosphere is VERY British pub, which for people who do not know what that entails, dark, lots of loud, drunken friendly folk playing darts, music blaring and good luck getting a table right away. Not everyone's cup of tea, but worth experiencing for yourself to see if maybe you have a future travelling Europe :D

After years of waiting to go here I finally made it. I'm glad I was able to go after the smoking ban since I have heard stories of it being incredibly smokey. The Horse Brass is a lot bigger then I imagined it to be, I pictured it as a small dive bar with good beer. It's really a huge, noisy place with amazing beer. I didn't stay long but I was able to to try the scotch egg which was fun to try since I never had one. All of the other food on the menu sounded pretty decent too but I wasn't looking to have dinner here. I also enjoyed a glass of Hair Of The Dog Fred and Pliny The Elder while there. As far as the service it is ok, nothing good or bad. If I lived in Portland I could see the Horse Brass being a regular place I would visit.

I've lived in Portland for 15 years, and this was my first visit to the Horse Brass. It's previous reputation as a smoker's bar kept me away, but now the place is cleaned up, and it was great. It's bigger than I expected, and looks pretty much like pubs we visited in England. We both had the Sunday Special--Shepherd's Pie with Salad for $6.95. It was HUGE (we should have split one), and very, very good. You just can't argue with a value like that. We'll be back.

I should probably start out this review by stating that the Horse Brass Pub does not serve Irish Car Bombs. How do i know this? Well my 60 year old mom challenged my 28 year old friend and all of his friends to a contest. Unfortunatlely they didn't have them. The bigger question is why anyone would want to drink an irish car bomb when they could have one of the amazing beers this place has on tap. Good question. I can't! I was really impressed with the selection. Not only did they have a "regular" tap list, but they also had an extensive "limited time only" list. I was really annoyed that they had "coming soon" beers too... what good is that going to do me?? So after a day full of drinking at a beer festival, i definitely needed some food. Their food was primarily british pub food, and for some reason i passed up greasy burgers, fries and shepherds pie for a roast beef sandwich. Cold w/ american cheese. In hindsight it seems like an odd choice. But it was delicious! It reminded me of the many late night drunken wawa runs for roast beef sandwiches. It was great So dont go in here looking for an irish car bomb, but for some good beer and decent food it was definitely worth a visit

"It's not about the beer, it's about the beer." - Don Younger, publican and owner of the Horse Brass. How can I give the legendary Horse Brass anything less than 5-stars? The place has EARNED that much if for nothing else than for helping usher in the modern "microbrew" era, and for faithfully providing a great place to drink some of the world's best beers for over 30 years! Visitors to Portland: go to Powells, walk on the waterfront, stop at Saturday Market, see a show at the Crystal, but whatever you do, you MUST stop by the Horse Brass for a pint or two, or you haven't really seen Portland! I first learned to drink beer with random, crappy "macrobrews", but when I moved to Portland I was so impressed that I could walk into pretty much any bar and get a real porter, or amber, or stout NOT made by Guinness. As my tastes and love of beer evolved, I discovered bars with more and more beers on tap. Soon, I wasn't impressed unless a place had 20, 30, 50, 100 beers available. But as time goes on I've come to realize that quantity alone does NOT make for quality. I'll take a bar with character, that has 10 carefully selected brews over a faux-Irish frat bar with 100 beers, but a bartender who doesn't know his bitter from a bock. The good news is, the Horse Brass has way, way more than 10 beers on tap (probably 50+) - not to mention a few ales on cask, and more than a few bottles. But what really makes this place special is the time, effort, expertise, and downright love that is so obviously put into selecting their beer offerings. There may be a few you won't like, taste after all is subjective, but more often than not you'll find some of the best, hard to find, most interesting beers available anywhere. And if they're pouring it at the Brass then you can guarantee it's not because it's trendy, but rather someone (probably Don Younger himself) thinks it's worth trying...and that's good enough for me! The Brass looks the part too, decorated in that slightly shabby, haphazard way that all English pubs should aspire too. Are the floors occasionally dirty? Yes! Have I once (a looong time ago) seen a mouse running around? Again, yes. But all that is as it should be. And let me just say, as the trueborn son of a fine English Lass, I know fish and chips, and the Horse Brass does them well. The batter is crisp, though slightly soft and yielding. Bite into one and the firm, delicious, flaky white halibut is cooked to absolute perfection; there's no mush and no waterfall of hot oil to run down your chin. And the chips - so good, and you can actually taste that there's potato in there! Good Bangers & Mash, Shepherd's Pies, and Sausage Rolls are also available - as is the infamous Scotch Egg! So, while the crowds, especially when they're doing special tasting events and releases, can make it nigh on impossible to find a seat, I strongly recommend you visit. Order a pint and wander around to find a seat in one of the hidden nooks, or just belly up to the bar where you'll get great service from knowledgeable staff. The Horse Brass is one of my favorite watering holes in town, and I doubt I'd find a cooler pub on this (or any) continent!

Over the years I've had a variety of experiences at the Horse Brass. But the last has completely redeemed it. Every year a gang of us go for post-Thanksgiving revelry. Our group grew from 5-6 10 years ago to around 20-30 now. We're hard drinkers and can be a little unruly, but mostly good natured. And we can also see how we can be just a little complicated. But the service didn't get any better than last night. There were no forgotten drink orders, no forgotten food orders. She was there more regularly than you'd expect for a busy bar on a Friday. She also asked us if we were getting home safely and made sure we had plenty of water. The seasonals were great and varied, though my Limey was sad about no Speckled Hen in pitchers. Overall just great, and amazing waitress thank you! We had a great night.

Rad selection of beers from the NW on tap here, but the fish and chips were some of the best I have ever had, and that includes several servings from my trips across the pond to Ireland and the UK. The bar tender (didnt catch his name) was really attentive and the wait staff was expedient and couteous. I went in the early evening before hapy hour during the week, so it wasn't busy with only about two dozen patrons (the place is really big and plenty of room at the bars and tables/booths), but imagine this place must get pretty chaotic in the evenings and weekends. I'll definitely be back to try more of their beer selections as well as pub grub.

Met up with a friend here to grab a bite to eat and catch up over some quality Oregon beer. The place had good ambiance, cool crowd, and an outstanding beer selection. I started off with the Rogue-Hazelnut Brown Ale, which was one of the best beers I've had. I should have stuck with that beer but I like to try new beers, so for my next one I went with the Young's- double chocolate stout which was also decent. My least favorite, but still decent was the Dry-Hop Orange. Their food was also pretty good. Being an English style pub I felt obligated to go with the Fish and chips, I wasn't disappointed at all. I also had an english sausage roll that was tasty. The entire menu looked appetizing. Friendly and attentive staff too, definitely recommend this place.

Hands down our favorite pub! So many beers on tap you have to flip through a menu! Food selection is limited, but the fish and chips are the best I've had. Sit at the bar and entertain yourself watching the bartenders bustle about. Always crowded and lively - very fun!

I am always disappointed when I go to the Horse Brass Pub. The only good thing on the menu is the Scotch Egg, if it gets to you still hot. They have a lot of beer, ok so. There are LOTS of places in Portland to get beer, and I cannot understand why this place is so popular. The Cocktails are the worst in town, even worse than McMenimins. They use a one ounce pouring device, the bartender never even touches the bottle. Why even have hard liquor if your going to make a shitty drink? They should be a true pub and lose the hard stuff. Its lousy anyway and your better off going somewhere with better food and stronger drinks. They don't even have Whip cream. WHAT BAR doesn't have whip cream??!! I do not see myself going again.... Unless my beer drinking husband drags me kicking and screaming.

I've been going to the HBP for almost 20 years (egads). I love it's smoke stained walls, and the intimate feeling of the lower ceiling. As odd as it sounds, now that it's smoke free, it's just not quite the same as it used to be. I have fond memories of sitting at a table, smelling the pipe smoke, enjoying a pint and playing backgammon. The magic is still there at the HBP, but without the cloud of pipe and cigar smoke (pipes and cigars were encouraged) it just misses that special edge. Fast forward to today, the steak and kidney pie is always good, the Scotch egg is a favorite as well as the Plowman's Lunch. I guess if you get really desperate for a hit of nicotine you can always lick the walls. I love going to the HBP and having a pint and throwing darts with friends.

I love the Horsebrass pub, I have been going there for over 20 years, The pub scene is fascinating, the beer is awesome. It was great even with the smokers. But the other night, my late evening hunger led me to the pub to have a large pint with a bridie. A bridie is a beef and onion turnover, more or less. The gravy killed my alone time. Everything was nice, except for that maple flavored gravy on my bridie. So I had another pint, and tried to forget about the "Attack of the maple flavoured gravy"!! I"ll go back of course, but will miss eating my innocent bridie in the future.

There was one couple in the restaurant and a few at the bar. We waited a long time for the waitress to even show up. Never having been there we asked her some questions about the menu. She seemed annoyed and later said she was because she said we were asking her to read us the menu. As we waited we watched a person clean off the table of the only other customers. Done so poorly. Not very sanitary. She picked up the salt and pepper, ketchup, and other sauce bottle from the table and did not even clean them but just put them on another table and then brought them to our table. The used cardboard coasters are not discarded but used over and over again. I ordered their supposed famous sausages. My plate came with two small sausages and a salad. I asked for honey mustard and ranch on the side and she brought me two small containers, as all the restaurants do, but the difference was that they charged me for them. The food was mediocre at best. The place is dark and dingy and not clean. I would NEVER go back and neither would my friend. Not impressed at all. Clean is very important to me in a restaurant and this place failed.

I'm just going to get to the point. I love beer. I love beer as much as one can before becoming an alcoholic (though I heard something about denial being the first step or something). Horse Brass does not disappoint. The rotating guest beer list is quite impressive. I was able to have the 250th anniversary edition of Guinness a few weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was saddened when I didn't see it again last night but I guess that is to be expected. The styles of beers is all over the place but that is to be expected with 50+ beers available. Needless to say there is something for everyone. The menus have a full description of what you can expect rather than just blindly ordering a beer without knowing what is in it. The English aren't renowned for their cuisine but that isn't to say there are a few gems to be found. Horse Brass doesn't screw around when it comes to their food selection. The classic Fish n' Chips is especially great since they use Halibut instead of the less appealing Cod. They also have bottles of vinegar and HP sauce to dip your fries in if you're into that. The Scotch Egg was also excellent though I felt about 4.6 hours of my lifetime taken away from me because of how unhealthy it is but I'll be damned if it isn't worth it.

Beer - Nom nom amazing. The menu's gigantic, so it's a bit overwhelming.. but the staff's pretty knowledgeable and can recommend you something you may like. They kind of sigh at you if you ask for a taste, though. Food - Nom nom amazing^2! Their scotch egg and fish & chips were absolutely delicious. I didn't mind waiting for them.. they're cooked fresh and with looove. Seating, people, atmosphere - Lively and interesting. Though it's usually pretty busy, I haven't had trouble finding a comfortable seat with whoever I'm with. It's a pretty large pub, and the lighting feels just right. Staff - .... Meh, adequate. They have tough jobs, this I know. But I don't like being sighed at, or having them tap their foot impatiently if I'm asking about different beers. I'm a noob at microbrews, and I can't be the only one. They're busy, but I've never had my glass empty for long.. redemption! You must go at least thrice to balance your perspective. I guarantee that one of those three times, if you're not a total grumper, you will have a blast.

Not sure how someone could not give this place a good review unless they get off on being a contrarian just for show. Great selection of beer, friendly and knowledgable staff, solid menu, and none of the pretentiousness that seems to afflict so many potentially great bars in Portland. A favorite meeting spot with friends and one of the real gems of the city imo. Cheers!

OK, so it's only my second visit, but the cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. No towels in the men's room, and my son says he's NEVER seen towels in there. Hmmmm... hope the employees have their own washroom. The ladies' room looks like it is rarely visited by the cleaning crew. My friends were happy with their beers, and the cheese plate was good, but the appetizer fries were overcooked. There may not be a third visit.

Great beer selection, fun bustling environment with an open layout so it doesn't feel too crowded, lots of stuff on the food menu. Only negative thing (and it's a big one): the pot pie I ordered came out partially frozen. Sticking to drinks next time.

This 4 star review is based solely on the beer selection. It is not based on the crappy vodka drinks they poured my mom. I don't feel the review should be dinged based on this, as it is a Pub known for their beer selection, I warned her, and I was right. I have been wanting to check this place out for awhile. Last night, I realized that I have been there before.... years ago. It didn't stick in my memory because at the time, the only alcohol I drank was vodka. I have missed the great pubs of SF and this place certainly kept up. The beer list was extensive. The french fries... deeeelicious. The wait staff, not overly friendly but decent. These three things are very important to me. SO if I loved it, why only 4 stars? I wont be going back very frequently. They don't have a happy hour and that's usually when I drink my beer (I'm cheap, or frugal depending on how you spin it). I also cant get my mom to go and pick up the tab because of the poor vodka drinks. But if you want an extensive beer list with both local and import beers, this is THE place.

Being a teetotaler I can't say I've tried any of the drinks they offer here, but having frequented enough bars and pubs in Portland, let me say that they have an amazing selection of beer and liquor. I'm here for the Scotch egg and fish and chips. I was a bit overzealous with my order and went with a full order of fish and chips, and a Scotch egg ( what? I was hungry. ) even though the bar tender advised me against it. The Scotch egg was a meal in itself, as it was a baseball sized, deep fried sphere of egg and sausage. I'm fairly sure that I may have taken a few months off my life just by eating this, but it was worth it. The fish and chips were very good. Not too oily, but not over cooked. It's hard to mess up fish and chips, but it can be done. The bar tender was very friendly, but not bothersome. My Dad considers himself a fish and chips connoisseur, and was very happy with his meal. Next time I'll go with the half order, as I was barely able to waddle out the door after this visit.

This is THE PUB. If only smoking were not criminal behavior in a place designated to be for drinking beer and smoking. Other than nazi smoking ban compliance (can't really afford not to) this is THE PUB. Thanks to Don and the great staff. Headed back every time I'm not there.
