Little gem on Hawthorne! This is a great place to go grab some lunch! They have a few booths in the front and a large room with pool, pinball, and other games. The food we ordered came without a long wait. The food was also not too expensive. As far as taste, it was delicious!!! The portions were big and the sauce on my burger was awesome! Fries were also good! The bartender working when we came in was very friendly. He was pretty awesome! I will definitely be returning when I get the chance!

I was immediately nervous when I got inside the place. I was greeted by four bearded homeless looking men standing at the bar, no doubt taking turns asking each other for change, while a skinny, tattooed elderly woman sneered at new people coming into the joint. I ordered a drink and passed a dead floor fan as I went into the back for some free pool. An old drunken maniac was flopping pool balls around the table with the side of the pool cue as he continually remarked upon the freshness of the felt. "Nice day isn't it! Nice day isn't it!" he exclaimed while staring at me with a lazy eye. I nodded vigorously as I violently finished my vodka tonic and high-tailed it.

Trivia, divey, the traditional ample supply of beer on tap in Portland. Wooot.

This is an interesting little bar, I lived across the street for several years and so have seen it in many lights. The drinks are generally good. It can be a nice place to drink a beer on a nice afternoon, they have a few outdoor tables. The food is pretty hit or miss. I once had a quinoa salad that was tasty and sizable, and I've also had the Cesar salad that was about 5 bites worth of lettuce... And both these items cost around the same amount. So, I don't go there often for the food anymore, but if your looking for a laid back bar with a couple pool tables, this might be your spot.

Great place! Nice vibe and three pool tables, no quarters needed! Bonus it had Boneyard on tap and some good eats on the menu. Good place to get the night started!

Came in for happy hour during the rose bowl. I was surprised to see the place pretty chill. Bulleit bourbon was on special, an instant star right there. Great beers on tap, check. 3 pool tables, pinball, two unisex poopers, check. Friendly staff, check. I'm kind of a sucker for a crispy bacon, gooey cheese and toasty bun slider and check, check, check! I'll be coming back for many happy hours and multiple late night munchies. Keep up the chill work, you're appreciated

After being disappointed that I couldn't get a Blood Mary at Jam I was determined to get something in my system on Portland's hip Hawthorne strip. The Hawthorne Hideaway was just the place. Some might call this a dive bar but not me. Chad suggested a few local beers and they did not disappoint. Jam is great and so is the Hawthorne Hideaway. PS-the Simpson's pinball machine is worth the trip alone.

This place has good food for cheap, good prices on beer and if you're looking for some sort of hook-up joint chalk full of hipsters, rakes and jocks well then... you'll have to look elsewhere. The owner is a very friendly guy, and the others are nice too. As for the everything else, lighting is dark and nice for a quiet date, music isn't too loud, pool tables are never swarmed and you can draw a picture and they'll hang it on the wall. My kind of place : )

I just moved into the neighborhood and I absolutely adore the Hideaway, .. free wifi and pool, super friendly bartender, drink specials and good food... what more could I want. I have never seen it packed and their is always usually a table to get on (although i havnt been on the weekends)... there are pinball machines if you feel so inclined.. its just an all around great neighborhood bar.

I have been going to the Hideaway for years. It's a great dive bar! It looks small from the outside, but it goes back much more than you would think. They have two or three? pool tables, I can't remember now and I am pretty sure it's free to play. There are some pinball machines and there used to be some lottery machines, but they have added some swanky looking booths were those were. The bathrooms are quite divy, but never smelly. The bartenders have always been topnotch since my first time coming here about 6 or so years ago. It's right up the street for me, so I used to frequent it often. Not that much now though, as I seem to be always trying new places. The well drinks are always strong and they use fresh squeezed OJ for their screwdrivers. Cheap beers, too. There food is pretty good, hamburgers and sandwiches and their nachos are great and come in all different sizes. Very affordable prices, too.

I love this place! Free pool (nice tables/new felt), 5 or 6 pinball machines, great food and drinks. And a friendly staff! My kind of place.

Hawthorne Hideaway: Because sometimes all you want at midnight on Christmas is homemade falafel, jalapeño poppers, and Anthem cider on tap. Quick, friendly service, hot food, good ambiance. Granted, I've only been here the once, but it beats the hell out of a lot of the louder, hipper Hawthorne joints. Update: There's a sweet game room in the back that I discovered in my second visit. I don't want this place to get too hip, so I probably shouldn't hype it any more, but it really is a great spot.

I liked it ! I really liked it! Imagine you're me, you're on the bus headed home when a good friend texts you and says, "wait! stop! hold it! meet me for happy hour pronto! let's try this place on Hawthorne!" I'm a big fan of happy hour and trying new places. So we popped into Hawthorne Hideaway on a gloomy, rainy afternoon. It was warm and homey, so I liked it right away. It also wasn't very crowded. It helped that we like to sit in the front room in a booth and most of the crowd here seems to congregate in the back pool room. More fun for them, more privacy for us! Double win! Okay, Tom, so shut up and tell us what the food and drink is like. I was drinking bourbon and gingers, which were poured just right. We were famished, so I decided to try the tater tot nachos, they were pretty darn tasty, but I do think they would benefit from using more nacho toppings and less tots. It was just a bit too much greasy tot goodness. It needed more chicken and cheese, though there were just enough jalapenos. I was stuffed to the gills, leaving a small pile of tots as an offering to the Universe. Next time, I'll get the ones on chips. My friend got the quesadilla which looked huge and amazing, would love to try that too. We'll be back. Did you know that Hawthorne used to be called Asylum Street and was known for its mental health facilities? Just a fun fact. Cheers, my loves!

I don't know why I love this bar so much, but I do. They have decent beers, and I've eaten a few things that were good (my first time for falafel!). What I really like about this place is that I get into the good kind of trouble upon leaving almost.every.single.time. Even though my friend (Jon O) has had rude service here several times, I've had nothing less than great service. Chad and Craig are pretty chill. Also, sorry. Sorry to the neighboring areas. And for making out in your bar.

Super awesome and extremely friendly bartender, and dirt cheap bar food: 2 tacos on Wednesdays for $1.50, and they're really good tacos! Great place within walking distance to my house, I'll definitely be back here again.

It's the perfect little hide-way bar. My only complaint is it closes at one, I would love to stay until sun up!

This place is cool. I've never been here before but I look forward to coming back. My buddy order a burger that looked really good. I ate a Happy Hour Cesar salad which was very good. The beer selection wa pretty nice and it looked as if they had some nice pinball machines.

Laid back....friendly....hide ur face place. It is dimly lit with the bar towards the back. The service is super chill. They have some funky drink discounts like on Tuesday when you get hooked up for wearing a mustache. Girls included if u want to draw one on you're face. They have a few pin ball machines in the back and a couple pool tables. Drinks are well priced even when it isn't happy hour. Good little joint.

Best happy hour bar food in Portland. Admittedly, I'm no foodie. I typically prefer superior atmosphere and unique mixed drinks when I judge the quality of a bar. But the happy hour burger just knocked me out. To begin with, I had never even heard of, let alone tasted, a Falafel burger. But when I saw that as an option, I had to go for it. And what the heck, since it was only $2.50!!! And a side of tots was only another $1.50!!! And how did this exotic Falafel burger taste? Good enough that if they would have charged me $7 I would still be writing a 5 star review. The bar itself is located on a quieter stretch of Hawthorne, a little west of the main drag. The atmosphere is dark and divey and I understand that there are complimentary pool tables in the back. Bottom line, give their happy hour a shot. For $4, you can't go wrong.

Really friendly bartender. Cheap but fairly good bar food and a great happy hour. They also have Boneyard IPA which is delicious.

Classic dive bar. Nice, cool bartender (boy, do they love to card in this town. i never get all uppity or annoyed about being carded, i get that they're just trying to not get fired or fined, but after losing my wallet in New Orleans and NEVER once getting carded for the rest of the time i was there, i couldn't imagine if that had happened while on vacation in PDX). anyway, my official guide brought me here for Rootbeer vodka. We had had an earlier discussion about Whipped Cream vodka and it led to an epic idea involving vanilla schnapps and rootbeer and whipped cream vodka... i know, i know. that's a stomach ache for sure, but we had big ideas, man. so we stopped for a drink and it was basic, comfy dive bar stuff. booths for sitting in groups and/or eating, long bar right by the door for hanging out and chatting up the nice staff, and two rooms off to the side for playing pool or just being away from the action. clean-ish bathrooms, good music on the jukebox -- like i said, basic, comfy divey stuff. bonus points for the bartender offering a taste of two new vodkas we spotted, Absolut Boston and Absolut Brooklyn. limited edition stuff for trying out, so may never see it again, but we got a little taste. in conclusion: hooray hawthorne's!

This bar is definitely divey and still trying to determine their theme, but who cares, its Portland afterall and this place fits in just right. I love their burgers and the drinks we scrumptious. Its a little dark in there...but which bar isnt. I had a good casual time sippin white russians and eating a burger. BTW the burgers are handmade and not just some quarter pounder size you find in your local grocers freezers.

I am biased, a regular here I am, but I love this place. Stiff drinks, free pool, wonderful burger, great tots, spectacular onion rings and top shelf service. Everyone should go here if they are in the Portland vicinity, just because, you will have a good time.

This place smells funny. I can't identify it, but the back smells differently funny than the front. The fries (in the cheese fries, at least) were on the uncomfortable median between standard and steak fries. The movie posters strike me as perfunctory. However, the bartender was friendly and efficient. I didn't eat (apart from a shared order of cheese fries) but I saw a mega burger (y'know, multiple meats and an egg) that looked and smelled amazing. Solid locals place. If you're near Hawthorne in the 20's, do stop in.

First-- I will lament that my group did not show up until a little after 7pm, and happy Hour was over. I will have to come back to hit that up--some pretty awesome deals are to be had including some yummy sounding $1 house made soups. The prices were still pretty decent though outside of Happy hour, the hubs and I had 4 drinks and split a burger with tots for under 25 bucks. Not too shabby. Also, these drinks are mixed STRONG. All the better! They have pool tables and pinball in the back, and pool is free! I'm always down for entertainment that is pocketbook friendly. I'm feeling kinda bad I hadn't checked this place out before, but I know I will be back.

I really like this little bar.....it's dimly lit and borderline seedy feeling. The low lighting makes everyone look a little better. The drinks are cheap and strong....always a winning combination. They also are the only bar close by that stays open late (last call at 2am). On top of that they also have a kicking happy hour with food and drink specials. The bartenders are friendly and super laid back. Great local bar.....will be back. No need to even wear makeup with that lighting.

This is one of my favorite dive bar spots. The manager, Chad, there has been there FOREVER and he is a great guy! The bartenders are also very friendly and quick! You can even get jello shots there, woo hoo return back to your college days. The food is surprisingly good, since it is a dive bar and the drinks are strong. Also pool is always free!!! Let the good times roll!

First of all, let me admit I just love a place with free pool. Having said that, I highly enjoyed an evening of drinks, food and pool with friends there the other night. Good strong and pretty cheap drinks, especially love the lemonade freshly made to order [to add to said lovely strong drink]. Bartender was fast, friendly, and happy to make a random drink... I didn't eat, but my friends did and it passed for good bar food. There are a few pool tables in the back, 2 in order and 1 being resurfaced. The other two BADLY need some TLC as well, but eh, it IS free. Nice that there is a game area in the back, but lots of booths in front for chowing down and catching up with people. I'd definitely return if in the area... one of the least pretentious/hipstery places I've been to recently on Hawthorne!

We live a couple blocks away and have been coming here regularly for a few years. The food value-for-product has gone down, but drinks are still a good deal, at least during happy hour. The bartenders are great, but the bathrooms are awful and the music can sometimes border on coma-inducing.

  • J D.

This is a five star bar for the following reasons: - You can chill out here, engage the bartender if you want, or just happily sit and sip without being disturbed. Free wifi too! - It's dark, but it's safe. The bartenders treat you like a friend right away, so they'll be looking out for you too. - The burger (with blue cheese) was really good. Is it the most amazing burger I've ever had? Maybe not - but it's up there. - They pour strong drinks. - You feel like a regular after 5 minutes.

This place hasn't been the same since they put in Video Poker. VP aside, where else can you get a bowl of homemade soup for $1? Really, tell me, I would like to know. I sure haven't found it. There have been a couple of periods in my life when that was dinner more than one night a week. ONE DOLLAR, and happy hour goes until 7 pm, I kid you not. They'll have everything from tomato basil to butternut squash to tortilla to broccoli cheese, on any given day. Another major plus for the HH is the Tom Collins, a proper one of which (and made from scratch) a rare occurence. Watch and be amazed as the bartender squeezes a lemon, a lime, and and orange for you, then the sugar cube... the gin... the spritz... and a cherry on top. Literally. The week it opened, my buddies and I spent several hours coming up with every possible English word that can be made from the random alphabet wall. We were really proud of ourselves, but we were the only ones.

Being a newish patron and unfamiliar to the "time before video poker," I am fan of Hawthorne Hideaway. If you remain in the front section of the bar, it feels like a cozy lil neighborhood haunt. A local haunt that my belly has learned to call out by name. The hideaway is the perfect place to hide out during happy hour, and devour one of the best burgers in Portland. Easily one of my top 5. During happy hour one can get a huge juicy 1/2 lb burger for $3.95, and it comes with a plate full of crunchy kettle chips, which I recommend served under the bun. Top that off with a couple $2.50 happy hour drinks and you are good to go.. Go here for good burgers, cheap happy hour and a hang out up, i bet you enjoy it!

I've got east coast in my blood so I like things short and to the point. That's exactly how this review is going to be. I met up for drinks with someone. The place had about 8 local beers on tap that I recall. The bartender was friendly and made suggestions on his favorites. It was early on a Friday and there weren't a whole lot of people there so we grabbed a booth to ourselves for chatting. It was a decent place, nothing too fancy, and I like that. I'd probably go back again.

Free pool (three tables even), friendly staff, cheap drinks, generous pours, decent burger, radio dialed into some good Sirius XM stations. What more could you ask for in a dive bar? It's perfect.

  • Olivia T.

Everything was blur after the double shots of Maker's Mark that my friend bought me. All I could remember was that my pretty buzzed DL made everybody in the bar sang me Happy Birthday even though it wasn't my birthday!!! We were celebrating my success in getting my United States citizenship, so his excuse was that it was my American birthday. Also more stars because they play Lady Gaga - Bad Romance, Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of The Heart, and more of my favorite songs. Even though I didn't request them. The bartender has good taste in music and like always, great minds think alike.

*The star rating is for the general atmosphere of the bar, but the written review is mostly about the tacos. I don't want anyone to think I gave a place its star-rating based on cheap tacos (which are obviously not its specialty ;). I'm not a drinker, but those I was with in Portland are. Knowing this, and knowing I wouldn't be down for anything unless it was dirt cheap, my Portland friend offered the suggestion of checking out his neighborhood bar, Hawthorne Hideaway for the reason of getting a cheap dinner (which also included lunch and breakfast for us this day). How cheap? Well, it being a Wednesday, $1.00/2 tacos cheap. No, not $.50 tacos... you have to get two and you have to order a drink- soda is fine. But sold, either way. Off we went. Arriving on the scene, I noticed that this was more like a restaurant upfront with a noticeably different bar scene going on in the back. The front has a long window but is still quite dark and has plenty of seating for the numbers that were in there around 7:30pm on a weekday. The back is a bit darker, lit mostly by neon beer signs. There were a few patrons saddled up to the long bar, the only seating in this area. We ordered our food, the guys ordered their drinks (I didn't get anything and no one seemed to mind). We ordered 9 tacos each- 1/3 vegetarian style. It took a little longer than I thought was necessary to get the tacos, especially considering what they were (standard taco shells with standard at-home fixings minus the good stuff like onions, tomatoes, etc.) and the amount of people there besides ourselves (5?). However, these were $1.00/2 tacos and I wasn't going to complain. I wasn't expecting much anyway other than a chance to fill up. When they arrived, I noticed they were mostly filled with iceberg lettuce (not a fave) but came with a nice little side of freshly made pico de gallo- pleasant surprise. I topped the vegetarian and non-veg tacos with the condiment and took my first bite. Not much to report back. It was a $1.00/2 tacos taco. The shell was the standard blandish but crispy shell I remember eating at taco parties. The cheese was finely shredded and had an okay amount- barely enough to taste it, but the flavor was there. The carne was my biggest beef, though. Just not enough! Most of what I was tasting was iceberg lettuce which I don't think I need to explain really isn't a taste at all. The beef that I did taste, however, was well seasoned... I just wish there were more of it. I would have paid $1.00/taco for more beef and less lettuce. Maybe. My suggestion: go with the beef over the vegetarian if it doesn't matter to you either way. The tofu used in the vegetarian version had a strange after-taste. It left my tastebuds wanting beef to cover up the flavor. Of course, I ordered more tacos to satisfy that. Why not, when they are $1.00/2 tacos? Final call: worth it when you're cheap as all get out. Otherwise, Taco Bell is a better option.

Simple. Stiff. Delicious. That's the trifecta of bar awesome. It's a neighborhood bar that has tables and booths in the front, the bar in the middle, and more seats, FREE POOL, and pinball in the back. We started out in the front, and moved into the back to avoid trivia. If that's your thing, though, you should be set. The drinks are strong, really strong, and the tots are salty. Do you think that stopped us from eating them? Nope. The Sunrise Burger, though is where it's at. It's like an egg sandwich and a cheeseburger love child. How can you go wrong? It's delicious and perfect for sopping up all that whiskey. What are great bar.

This is the type of space you would get verbally abused for by some curmudgeon of a professor in design school. The entrance is timid. Where's the circulation? Why is there such a dramatic separation between the front and the back? It's severed. The material palette is questionable, are you sure about all that black? Where's your central gathering space? I don't understand your logic. WHY WOULD I GO HERE? And you, you wannabe designer, would stand there, dumbstruck, face to face with someone with more years of experience that you've likely been alive. You'd glance at your drawings and your model, hoping... PRAYING... that the answer to all of those questions was somewhere in there (it's not) and that you had just glossed over it (you didn't). So you take a gulp, and figure if you're going to fail, fail big, and finally manage to sputter out: "Because... well... um... it's AWESOME." There's absolutely no rhyme or reason to anything at the Hawthorne Hideaway. Yet it's almost a refreshing that hodge-podge knows no bounds. No concept, no theme, no cliché vibe that's so rampant in the hippest of hip neighborhoods. When you can walk in at 5:30 on a sunny weeknight and leave to a dark night sky after 8:00 pm without realizing how many hours you've just wasted, that says something to the enjoyable nature of the place. It's a fantastic spot to kick back with friends for a casual drinks. The bartender was a spectacularly friendly guy. He even went so far as to agree with my critique of the deplorable design of my wallet. (the last time I buy one because it looks pretty, form follows function, y'know?) Attentive and efficient, no one in our group was without a drink or food for very long. The back room is the place to be for groups hanging out. We spent the evening playing free pool, listening to a bizarre mix of top-40 and classic rock, and wondering why anyone would watch poker on TV. It's nothing spectacular, definitely not flashy, but it's nice. No, you know what? Hawthorne Hideaway is great. But the old academic crowd just wouldn't buy it. The centuries of perfecting spatial composition and defining honest tectonic expression are a loss. Baffled at your explanation they would turn to a building completely unattainable by today's standards of design. Know the Grand Staircase of the Palais Garnier? Now there's a wonderful gathering space. Have you seen that? Do something like that, but you know, for Portland. "Yeah... Okay." You say as you hold back your tears. Your critique may only last an hour, but at least you know you've found a good spot to cry into your beer as you head back to the drawing board for the rest of the term.

Reasons why I love this place 1. It is a block away from my house 2. 1/2 price well drinks from 4-7 3. a 4 dollar decent burger on happy hr with a mountain of tater tots for only 1 buck more 4. free pool Are those 4 reasons enough?

    (4)
  • Lucas C.

FREE POOL. FREEEEEE POOOL and a decent happy hour but that part ends a bit early (I want to say 7, but all day sunday!). Anywhere with themed nights is pretty awesome in my opinion and this place has plenty; mustache night, worker service, margarita night, etc. Parking kinda sucks but open wifi is always a plus. Staff is cool, pretty laid back. Beer Selection is plentiful, don't know about the food, tho. Love the layout. Want to play pool and not be bothered by table-sitters? No problem, back room is for you. Want to drink and not be bothered by pool players? Stick to the front. Last time I came by there were actually three different people out with their laptops studying in the booths in front. Nice distribution lends to comfort for all.

My friends and I hung out at this joint last night. We had a lot to talk about as we hadn't seen one another in almost six months, so we were there for a good two and a half hours. We got there at the tail end of happy hour (last half hour) and ordered the happy hour burgers ($5.50 each) which come on a bun with lettuce, tomato and some good may/ketchup/pickle sauce which doubles as a good fry dip. I requested no bun as I am gluten intolerant and it was no problem. The three of us which ordered burgers were all happy with them. I would say if I came here again I would ask for medium rare as they do cook them well done and I would request no salt, but I'm sensitive to it and no one else tasted it. The burgers come with chips, but for $1 more you can add a mountain of tots. I opted for a side of bacon cheddar fries and I was very happy. I used them to top my bun-less burger for some flavor and texture complexity. I like tomatoes, just not with my meat, so I ate those separately. They have hard apple cider on tap, but after beginning our evening at Bushwhackers, I was spoiled by the availability of more complex ciders there. It was still decent though. One of our company also requested a beer that was a cross between pap's and something else and he was thrilled with the can of beer they gave him. I'm not a beer person, clearly, but he was happy and felt they understood his request so it bears noting. This is a bar first and foremost, so you walk up to the bar to place your orders. They do bring them out to you though. The place has a lot of charm with low seventies lighting and various local art up on the walls. There is music pumped through speakers causing you to raise your voice a bit to be heard. Again, this is a bar, so in case it isn't obvious, kids are not aloud. There is one flat panel tv up in the corner by the pass through to the pool room and the game was on last night. There is no room for dancing. The waitress was attentive but a smile wouldn't have hurt her. The bar tender was friendly and clearly remembered those who are there regularly. I would say he has a big heart and it shows. He even call out to have a good night as you leave. One of our friends did comment there are copious amounts of dried gum stuck to the bottom of the chairs as the table, so there's a heads up. There are three or four pool tables in the back which are free to play and everyone who came in to use them was kind enough to not take them over for hours on end. The sign out-front is not the easiest to see driving by as the "Hawthorne" part of the sign is tiny. You only really see the "Hideaway" part in large letters as you drive by. The street parking, on weekdays, is 1-2 hours only until five if I recall correctly. There is no parking lot, but that's expected in Portland. The bathrooms are along the back wall, where the pool tables are. They are colorful. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but both of them are covered in graffiti...as in plenty of colorful language and interesting bits on the walls. They are also dimly lit. Overall, the food was good, the pool was free and the bar tender was down to earth and had a great smile. I don't have anything to complain about and recommend you try this place if you haven't.

Sorry, I don't get it. We came here based on the supposedly amazing burgers. Let's deal with that first. They aren't amazing. They aren't even really good. First off people there is a difference between a burger that is juicy, and a burger that is greasy. Grease does not = juice. Overcooked. Flavor of uncleaned grill. Advice: order it without the 3 lbs. of chopped iceburg lettuce they include. Not at all impressed. I can't really comment on the crowd, the night we were here it was pretty dead. So dead in fact that the whole "placing the order at the bar" thing seemed even more budget. Apparently the Hideaway isn't doing well enough to have a server on staff? Perhaps because it doesn't have anything about it that really stands out. Which brings me to the ambiance of the place. It's dark. Dark to the point where we were using our cellphones to illuminate the menus. It's also loud. It was really dead, yet it was still also really loud. Strange. I guess there is a pool table at the back of the place, perhaps with a sizable crowd contributing to the noise. So in conclusion if you want to sit in a dark noisy room and eat a bad burger this is your place. Oh and amongst the random art, a drawing of John Wayne Gacy in his clown makeup. John Wayne Gacy doesn't make your place more hipster. I am beginning to understand the formula for what constitutes a popular bar in Portland: make it dark, create some reason for the service to suck, and make PBR cheaper than soda.

I went here last night with a friend, when we realized Imbibe was closed. Enjoyed - nice private booths. Disliked - Divey, but not in a way I like and the drinks were pricey. I don't think I'll be back, because this wasn't my kind of place - not necessarily bad, just not for me.

This bar is real. The bartenders are are on point. Chad is gracious, welcoming and always looking out. This a great place to chill.

The Hawthorne Hideaway makes me wish I looked like Courtney Love from the early 90's. It's just that kind of a place, you know? The lighting is low but not non-existent. There are pool tables that would be awesome if life were like a music video and you could randomly hop up and start making out with a greasy cyclist before racking up. The booths are roomy and slightly sticky. In fact, the booths look like the right setting to laugh unhingedly post-catfight with some random bar patron, while brandishing a cigarette and sitting on the tabletop as your drinking mates kind of gingerly chuckle along with you because they're all semi-aware you're kind of a crazy bitch. Except the Hawthorne Hideaway did away with smoking indoors the same time that all the bars had to enforce the rule. And I found out a while ago that I only identify with Courtney Love through her lyrics, and not so much her lifestyle. And the bar is still a fine place to drink inexpensive beverages before or after watching a movie at Cinemagic, snacking at the food carts on 12th, or whenever. But if the atmosphere gives you the urge to snort something off the toilet seat and pick fights with blond girls, just say no. In real life, crazy bitchery is not cute.

I had the honor of being one of the first frequenters of this, what was at the time, the Greatest Bar in Portland (in my opinion of course). This was the side project and dream of the owner of Oasis Pizza and in the minds of all who watched it grow from the fledgling bar with a random assortment on pop memorabilia and some big ass letters on the wall (trust me they don't spell a damn thing) to the bustling cornerstone of the Hawthorne bar crawl. There was one rule and battle cry amongst the staff and owner of the Hideaway and to my knowledge is still enforced: This bar will not be or become a pretentious, wait for half an hour for the bartender to deem you human and worthy of a drink, must be a hipster/self absorbed/or hot to work or drink at bar. They have the famous free pool, with a civil honor system for sharing, an internet jukebox with most everything your little heart desires and some of the best homemade bar food you'll get in Portland. My personal favorites: House roasted turkey sandwich, Pyramid Heif, Quesadillas and their muddled citrus fruit handmade whiskey sours. Everything I had, which I think was pretty much everything, was excellent. Ambiance: In the years that i was a regular i only ever witnessed or heard of a hand full of scraps or fights as that behavior or people who are looking for that aren't welcome. If you're friendly to the staff and fellow patrons and tip your bartender and throw the cook a compliment on their masterpieces you will become a family member. The back room is great for larger groups and the front is quaint and complete with low lighting for those romantic types. If you haven't been here you owe it to yourself to stop in and find your new favorite bar. FYI: If you park in the Hotlips parking lot next door you will be towed!!!

I stopped here to kill some time before dinner with a friend somewhere else. Cool little bar with a decent tap selection. What really sets this place apart was the friendliness of the staff. When the bartender found out that my girlfriend and I weren't from the area, he proceeded to give us all kinds of great recommendations and really took care of us. Not only did the bartender help us with information, but one of the other customers at the bar was helpful as well. All around nice place to stop for a drink.

I go here because it is pretty much right between my apartment and my friend Jess' apartment. Also, the first time we went Limp Bizkit was playing. We didn't realize there was a jukebox at the time (it's in the back), we just thought we had accidentally stepped into the nineties. We declared it our new favorite place (yes, we were drunk) and started going pretty frequently. When we realized that we could actually control the music selection, we were pretty stoked. It's one of those video jukebox things, so whether you want to play Sleater-Kinney or All Saints, you are good to go. Also, they make drinks with fresh juice (I always get greyhounds) and it's...relatively clean? I just like jukeboxes. If you decide you are in a classier mood, you can just go to Imbibe next door. Convenient!

Just got home from the Hawthorne Hideaway, and had to get a Febreeze spray-down. The smoky pub, tucked between Imbibe and Hot Lips Pizza along lower Hawthorne, is a great spot for decent eats at great prices. And, with their Happy Hour lasting until 7pm, it's possible to get your grub and drink on for under ten bucks while all other establishments are already hawking their fares at ridiculous prices. For instance, I got a 1/3-lb burger with chips, a healthy portion of Caesar salad, and a pint of Black Butte Porter for $9.90 USD. Don't forget to take in the ambiance: cheesy 60's style lithograms, a humongous wooden fork typical in many Hawaiian or Filipino living rooms, and dark terra cotta walls, make for a romantic setting for Goths and Emo kids. It's definitely a place that attracts a younger crowd; anyone over 30 will stand out like an Asian country music crooner. But don't let that stop you. Free pool, free wi-fi, and free trivia night (on Mondays), and a full bar, and you've got yourself a dive-like spot worth visiting any night of the week.

Walked in. Sat down. The place was empty. The server was very busy re-hanging pictures. Waited and waited. Got ignored. Walked next door for pizza. And that was my introduction to Hawthorne Hideaway! I will try HH one more time, but only one.

Good beer selection, Good happy hour and right on Hawthorne. I have ventured in their many times and always seems to be good. What can I say I am a man of simple means

It's our regular neighborhood haunt. The name is right on the money. It's a very special place that that you can go to get away and it has great service. The burger is a fantastic bargain. Every day of the week is a special day at the hideaway. Fresh squeezed margarita Monday's are awesome. 3.50per is unbeatable. Mustache Tuesdays for half off your tab is just plain fun. Oh yeah and they have RC cola on tap. It's dark and secluded and the same people are always there and it really is hidden away.. Chris the bartender is awesome.. Chad is cool and very friendly too. I don't know the others' names but they are all very nice which is important to me. Free pool, great selection of beers, good drinks, great specials every day. The decor is definitely unique one might say delightfully tacky on one side and on the other it has rotating local art in the front which ads a tinge of class...not too much but just enough. Food is surisingly good. Tacos on Wednesdays which get the job done nothing more. (they're .75 each, so back off.) For the money you can get a lot for a little. I think the hideaway it's the prefect bar for any occasion, first date, breakup, found out you knocked up your boss' daughter, this is the spot! Five stars all the way. I love you Chris. You're my rock. Thanks for always being there.

Good beer selection, fresh squeezed juices, good music--albeit a little too loud--and what looked like a kickin' happy hour food menu. This place is super comfy, a little too smokey, and has a huge back room that had open tables on a Saturday night. Sweet. Will definitely be back for their happy hour snacks--chips and salsa are like crack to me, but crunchier--but think I may wait til the smoking ban goes into effect.

I want to take this review down a notch... why you may ask? Well, I haven't been back. The burger was absolutely amazing and the price couldn't be beat. It's just the atmosphere leaves you wanting more. Every time I think about going, I opt for something a little more bright, cheery or with nice outdoor seating. Maybe it's just that summer is in full blast and come winter I'll be back

This bar delivers when it comes to cheap drinks, good service, and convenient location (for me anyway, it's a short walk from my sister in laws house!). I cant comment on the food because I didn't try it. The only major gripes I have are with the layout. The bar is a very crowded narrow walkway in the middle that separates the front and back, and it's hard to walk through when it's busy! However, I am not too picky, and won't rule this place out because the good outweighs the negative here.

I can't believe I've been going to Meridian or Claudia's for the last 4 years when I could have been coming here. The best bar for the money on Hawthorne, in my opinion. I am obsessed with finding margaritas around town made without sour mix, and this place does it. Just fresh juice and booze - yum. The food isn't gourmet but it tastes really good & I love their soups. Happy hour all day Sunday and until 7 on weekdays, including all the fresh-squeezed juice drinks. I'm on my way to becoming a regular here, I think.

Dark, cozy, and friendly atmosphere. Nice diversity, no one would really feel out of place here. Great menu. Tater Tot Nachos, for real?? Yes, for real. Free pool. Ace hard cider, pretty tasty! I like how the place is divided up. Sit and eat booths in the front. Play pool, video poker, pinball in back. Old movie posters. Heavy and silly graffiti adorning the bathroom walls. Can get busy, but never overly or uncomfortably crowded. This is the first bar my boyfriend insisted on us visiting when I finally came to Portland, he was here on his own for a month and had been frequenting it because it is such a laid back place. We've been back several times. If you're looking for a laid back night with good drinks and great munchie food this may be the place you want to go.

One of my favorite neighborhood bars. Nice mix of clientele with a really friendly staff. Free pool, digital jukebox, nice selection of comforting (and inexpensive) bar food, cheap booze. What more do you need?

Big Kudos for 1. prompt service, .2. a tasty drink on the cheap. I like the darkness and set up of this place. It's dark and private or dark and loud depending on where you are in this bar. When you walk in there are booths and you can definitely have a conversation, walk up to the bar and you have a bit more light and you can definitley observe the crowd from this spot. In the back where there are the pool tables, there is a bit more ruckus and the music is up louder. So it's your standard set up in that way. Also Sundays are like $2.00 well drinks, holy crap!

I have a 3 day a week Hawthorne Hideaway habit that I have yet to break. I can come here alone and chill and read and get out of the heat, and no one's ever been creepy or unfriendly toward me. This place just doesn't seem to attract those kind of people. I can get my fresh-squeezed drinks right here without dealing with spotty McMennamins service, and the servers are all dolls. My favorite bartenders in PDX. I live within spitting distance of the Sewickly's/Space Room barmuda triangle, and I often opt to walk the 30 blocks down to here instead. So yeah, you could say this place is my favorite.

Hawthorne Hideaway is a divey bar. They have a pretty good beer selection at good prices. They have great happy hour deals and daily specials. On Tuesdays if you bring your passport, you get happy hour prices all night. The food menu is also pretty good. We had the grilled PB&J which was tasty. There are lots of tables, free pool in the back, and video lottery in the front.

This is a GREAT bar for those who enjoy happy hour. The staff has always been super-polite, which I have learned to cherish amongst Portland dive bars. The food is great, the burgers are truly monstrous and are super cheap from 4-7pm. I don't drink, so when I go to a bar with my friends, atmosphere, food, and service are very important to me. Hideaway's defiantly got all three.

Good place to have a conversation over beers and a smoke. I truly found this one by accident, but I'd go back if I was in a bind. I thought it was really relaxed and had decent rock music playing. The location is close to 21st, so parking is where ever you might find it. It's a good thing to have a secret hideaway sometimes...

This is probably the best dive bar I've been to in Portland. Not too crowded for a late night on a Friday night. Yes, free pool (I mean, just kidding, the pool is like a million dollars a game so don't go there...ahem), pretty good pours and a jukebox. We didn't try the food, but it's next to Hot Lips in case you need non-bar-food sustenance to get you through the evening's endeavors. Oh, and the best part? Completely unpretentious. Definitely will return.

They make fresh-squeezed cocktails. I recommend the Tanqueray Greyhound. Yummy. They get 2 stars for that and the location. Otherwise this place is barely decent.

We heart the Hideaway! Known affectionately as the "Booze Cave" among my friends, the Hideaway is relatively new to the Hawthorne bar scene, but has quickly become one of my favorites. This place reminds me of how the best bars in Portland were before the "hipster explosion" of the last ten years or so: great service, decent jukebox, yummy, cheap food, strong drinks and free pool. The crowd is really mixed here--very much like a good neighborhood bar--and the place is cool enough (they have a bleepin' Gilligan's Island pinball machine!) but not overly aware of itself. The best tuna melt in town for my money. I also dig the tall, oversized booths and trivia on Mondays. The whole place allows smoking, so not for those of you who can't stand the stuff.

this was my weekly trivia place. we never won and im convinced it was because trivia girl was in kahoots with the regulars who were more regular than us. that or because there was never an americas top model category. i could have rocked that. its not the cheapest bar and at times in the back we had to smoosh around the tables, but i thought the burgers were good, and any non salad item pretty good. the drinks were decently strong and i thought the staff was pretty cool/nice.its not as divey as id like but good memories of being reminded, weekly, that im a moron.
