You know what? This place freakin rocks. I've been twice (once sit-in, once take-out), and it's pretty spot-on. Not "Jiro dreams of sushi," but absolutely delicious. The service is always nice and a little bumbling, like they are all really earnest but it's their first week. Thankfully it comes across as endearing rather than irritating. The sushi is rully good, and the Happy Hour is amazing. Enjoy!

Great service but the sushi was just ok. The fish was softer than what I typically experience at very good sushi restaurants - I am not sure what that means about the quality though. There was no fishy smell to indicate that it was old, it just felt more "mushy". Easy to park, get in and get out, but not a new favorite for me.

Last night was my second trip here and the first trip was an unmitigated success. Service was prompt and friendly, but not smothering and both the sushi and teriyaki were great. I recall leaving feeling a bit stuffed, but hardly their fault, quite the contrary in fact. Last night, I discovered something of a usability bug. Much of the stuff on the "real" menu doesn't appear on the laminated sushi list. So if you order, say just for example, chicken teriyaki, even if you have to repeat it for the waiter, you might want to make sure he got it. Because I never did.

Service was quite lacking. The sushi was decent, nothing incredibly note worthy. I also didn't like the atmosphere, it felt really sterile to me. This coupled with the impersonal service makes it a "skip-it" place for me. Their are much better sushi options in the area.

Hana has done it again, no I tell you it is not possible to get a bad meal in PDX. In my own neighborhood I was transported to a high rise in Tokyo... Two words Fiery Dragon. This is the roll to get. Tempura, cucumber, spicy tuna, tobika beautifully displayed and dutifully enjoyed. Every dish superb, wonderful atmoshere, good prices and fine quality, I like it.

Alberta Street is littered with delicious food and great shops...but that doesn't mean every place is like that and Hana is a perfect example of a place that rides the coat tails of a popular neighborhood. Lukewarm customer service. Mediocre food. Nothing that would make me recommend or return. As a person who both lives and works in the neighborhood I was greatly disappointed by my first visit. The fish was poorly cut and not very fresh. The roll selection was repetitive and unappetizing.Staff was grumpy and disinterested. Too bad it's a beautiful restaurant with a great location.

Hana was one of best and authentic Japanese eateries I've dined at in awhile. Sushi, Ramon an my dish which I can't spell or pronounce was superb. Place was hopping so service was slow but in the end worth the wait. Great presentation. Try this place if you are visiting the district it's a keeper as the only places I can compare vitro are one of my favorites in San Francisco and a hole in the wall in north Miami Ronn just Ronn The hole in the wall food guy.

This place was EXCELLENT! We went to grab dinner around 8pm, the place wasn't too busy at all. The waitress was very attentive, waters always full and checking in to see how everything was. We ordered 5 rolls between 2 people and it was SO much food. All of them were super good - my fav was one with mago and tuna. I will for sure be back!

  • Laura P.

Huge selection of rolls and a decent variety of other standard (cooked) Japanese dishes. The sushi tasted fresh and was made quick to order. The service was good and the place started to fill up around 6:30pm on Saturday night (always a good sign).

Every Tuesday, my and I dad go to a different sushi restaurant. I always order the Philadelphia Roll, and review it for the rice, salmon, cream cheese, etc. I am always on the lookout for the best Philly Roll in Portland! Date & Time of Visit: 1:15pm Tuesday March 3 2015 I-SPY: Look for the big block that says "LOVE" in Chinese. Location: 3 stars This restaurant is on 22nd and Alberta across from Townshend's Tea, on the same block as Bishop's, one block away from Mash Tun and Pine State Biscuits. We rode our bikes here so no thoughts on the parking. Service: 3 stars We were seated quickly and got our water quickly. But the server was slow to take our order. We had a friendly server who was running the entire dining room, so we didn't get check-ups for a while, even though we didn't need anything. Decor/Ambience: 3.5 stars Our table was chipped, as were the plates which matched with the soy sauce bowls and spoons. There was a dry-erase marker for our menu. There was a TV on with no sound and closed-captioning, also there was jazz music and early 90's pop, not too loud. There were snowflake lights, parasols, and other decorations in an otherwise boring space. Presentation: 3 stars There was ginger and wasabi on an all-white plate. There were 8 rolls. The photo above shows 2 orders. Tastiness: 3.5 stars There was lots of delicious salmon with a very fishy taste. There was avocado on the roll and no cucumber. The rice was relatively sticky and there was white sesame seeds on the roll. The avocado was barely ripe. And the cream cheese was average. Non-Philly Foods: 4 stars (Dad speaking) Tea was served in large cups of single-serve tea bags, not in a pot as is normal. Nonetheless, it was pretty good, but acquired a "bottom of the pot" taste pretty rapidly. I had a yakidori chicken bowl which had great chicken at a good price. The miso was standout though, with a great aroma and good hearty seaweed bits. Price: $5.90 for 8 rolls. Overall: 3.5 stars Takeaway: Simple and average Alberta sushi. Don't go out of your way for it.

My boyfriend and I come here about once every couple weeks for date lunches or dinners. The waitresses are always really friendly, and never forget to fill up my water. (This is huge for me as I usually bring a water bottle in my purse to restaurants because I drink so much water.) Now the sushi. I'm not sure where people are saying it's mediocre because I've tried many a sushi place and I am always disappointed because it's usually not as good as this place. The best part? The fish doesn't smell fishy and it taste fresh. The only bad thing I can say is that my boyfriend is sad they took away the spicy bacon roll.

Would love to review the food here but we were seated at a table and then ignored for nearly twenty minutes. If you are on Alberta and want good sushi, skip hana and walk down to zilla sake.

I really like this place- it's never been really crowded the times I've gone so I can't say if love it at all times - the acoustics might get a little nuts with the super talk ceilings but forget that- the food is good, great salads with a yakiniku and I can only review the Kappa Maki since I'm a sushi saddo. Pathetic, I know. However all things pho and teriyaki are swell, especially the pho and the pickled ginger is plentiful and the servers ( except one) are all really nice.

Ate here on a whim with my boyfriend the other day and we both agreed that we wouldn't be back. The service was good but the food was mediocre. The sushi wasn't bad, but just very Americanized and not the best we've had by a long shot. This review is largely for the pork ramen that I ordered though, which was downright confusing - if I would have been served this without it being called ramen on the menu I would have asked why someone put instant Top Ramen noodles in cabbage soup. It was a vegetable broth with a lot of cabbage, carrots, onions, celery, over-cooked pork, and what had to have been instant noodles (embarrassing.) No mushrooms, seaweed, etc. Not even a hint of miso or soy in the broth - not traditional at all, and arguably not even ramen. Wish I would have taken a photo! If you're looking for Japanese food that airs on the side of traditional, this isn't your place. It's definitely very Americanized.

  • Bartek K.

Ironically the worst thing on the menu here is the krab salad that is used for many common rolls such as the California roll. If you avoid it you will have a much better experience. The atmosphere is a little...weird? I don't know. It's not right. The service has been fine each time. It's probably the best sushi I've had on Alberta but it doesn't even make the top 10 in Portland. I come here to fix a craving, not to enjoy good sushi.

    (3)
  • Mike T.

Just a solid two star experience. The music was too loud, the miso soup was bland, the sushi was just "ok", the chicken teriyaki was salty, and the dessert was weird.

    (2)
  • Chris M.

Their rolls are SO fresh! Best sushi I've had in a while. Ramen was also delicious. It comes in a huge bowl so beware ;) Very friendly waitress and smiling sushi chefs from behind the bar. Big, open fun space.

I have only done take out with Hana but every time has been an awful experience. The girl I interacted with was extremely snotty. I made it very clear that I needed tamari since im allergic to wheat, the girl said ok but still gave me soy sauce. Im just happy I caught the mistake before I used some. Over all the food was ok, poor fish quality in my opinion and you could tell its been sitting out all day. Sadly its the only sushi restaurant in the area.

Went there with a group on 2/24/15. Pretty good overall. The salmon and crab were very fresh. Decent wine selection for a neighborhood sushi spot. Huge maki section of the menu. LOTS of tempura maki, though, which I noticed is becoming more and more common these days. 4 adults and 1 child, and the bill was under $120 before tip. I would say a solid place, but not spectacular.

I am constantly trying to find a decent sushi restaurant where the quality of the fish and the presentation outweigh the price. Dream Big! I have to say that Hana has some of the best tasting sushi as well as the fairest price in all of Portland. The restaurant is comfortable and the service on my visits has been exceptional!

Tempura udon was fabulous I like the check menu sheet For the price I don't think you can do much better

I have eaten here twice and both times the Sushi was delicious with tasty sauces and fresh fish. The rolls had a variety of combinations but still had the traditional sushi feel to them. The prices are pretty average, about $9 for a roll. I will be back!

  • Corran S.

No stars. Came during happy hour. Should call it crappy hour! The food is pretty gross, we didn't even bring it home for our dogs. The "Yakisoba" was ramen noodles from a package. The Godzilla roll was a gigantic mess of gross fish bits which I found to be in edible. I expect the health department to shut it down any day.

Service here was great, atmosphere is clean and relaxing. Great for lunch and dinner! The presentation of the food here is just as great as the flavor! The cuts here are just amazing. To top it off, it's right on Alberta st. across from Townshend Tea House!

This has become a go-to spot for my hubby and me when we want sushi. We've been to most of the "Top 10" sushi places in town, but this is the place we tell our friends to go. It's not flashy and you're probably not going to find anything new on the menu, but they get top marks for freshness, quality, preparation and value. We almost always order one of the "combo" omakase plates to share, along with miso, edamame, salads and sake. The first time we went, we were blown away with what they brought to the table. Excellent, generous cuts of fish simply prepared (I hate sushi that's been drowned in sauces or has to compete with a million other ingredients). Its true that their service can be slow, so if you're in a hurry this maybe isn't the place for you, but they are always very cheerful and have never messed up our order. We haven't tried the "belt" sushi at the bar, so I can't speak to that. Overall, along with Ichidai in southeast Portland, this is probably one of the better places in town that won't break the bank and will leave you very satisfied!

The good: I've been to Hana many times in the last few years and had a variety of dishes- many different rolls, Hawaiian poke, udon, tempura, and sashimi. All were competently prepared, but only the poke really rose above that made by other restaurants. I've also had several kinds of sake there and am very happy with their sake selection. Prices are moderate for this area. Where Hana falls down (not quite to two stars, but close) is the lack of service. I've gone many times when the restaurant is less than 1/3 full, but I've had to wait far too long to even be acknowledged. Not so much as an "I'll be with you in a second." There is an even longer wait for the servers to take our order. ( I will say that once the orders are in, the food comes in a reasonable amount of time. ) As I said earlier, the sushi is tasty enough. Go there if you're already walking around on Alberta and don't mind a long wait for service. Otherwise, skip it for one of Portland's other excellent sushi restaurants. Edited to say: they seem to have new or more staff, and the difference in wait times was a pleasant surprise! Also tried the chirashi, which ties with the hawaiian poke as my favorite dish there.

Honestly I've been stuck in a love affair with Bamboo..the venerable SE 28th sustainable sushi paradise...but whilst North on Alberta Hana will definitely become my "other" love affair. The vibe a bit typical...a little industrial but comfortable enough The waitstaff excellent..we had the sweetest kindest waitperson ever... Loaded up on Miso..yellow Tail Sashimi...and the rolls were fresh, tightly wrapped ..didn't do anything too exotic...my fall back is Spicy Tuna . A full sushi roll menu and served on various boats and bridges:) Typical full bar and the Sapporo is plentiful.... Reasonably priced and even more so because someone picked up the tab...score!

I have been late on the sushi train and never much of a seafood eater but this place has really gotten me to be bolder and try new things because the more I have there the more I enjoy. Love, love the Bonsai and the Flaming Dragon rolls. Staff is wonderful and the chefs put forth art. I live very close to this place and if we ever thought of moving, this would be one of the things I would miss most.

Sushi was pretty fresh but it isn't absolutely exceptional place so if I didn't live in the neighborhood I wouldn't purposely seek this place out. Not a great deal of options in the special rolls but there are some really good ones mixed in there. The Ramen is about average for Portland which would be about sub-average for any large scale city like San Fran, NYC, or an LA. I would recommend that they have some more happy hour prices or other options here.

One of our favorites and we consider ourselves sushi snobs. Fresh fish. Creative options but not too crazy.. I love the atmosphere, hip but not pretentious. Sake menu is also excellent.

Pretty decent HH. Many rolls/apps are discounted. I loved the Godzilla roll, but the fried veggie tempura..bleh. Maybe I just don't like tempura.. But everything was fresh and the Seafood Raman was delicious! I would definitely go back to try more Raman. The service was on the slow side, which was odd considering there was only one other patron..but no biggie.

Super good. I live extremely close and I am so happy I do. The service is always wonderful, great sushi. My favorite is I think called midnight sun or something like that! Extra BOMB! Anyway, if your in the area it's defiantly a good place to enjoy lunch / dinner or even just a quick spicy tuna roll for like 4 bucks!

My family of 6 ate an early dinner here yesterday. The appetizers, sushi, and chicken teriyaki were just ok as was the service. Nothing really stood out. I probably will not dine here again.

Price: great during the Happy hour. Food: bleak, nothing that I would be going back for. Winner: Edamame, spectacular. Delish and cooked to perfection. It stays on the salty side which I adore. Sake: Great options on flaovor.

Occasion: This is my very first time wondering around Alberta Street for the event called Last Thursday, where I stopped and discover a Japanese restaurant called Sushi Hana. I went in and grabbed dinner to eat because I was super hungry. Guest Services: I was greet the moment I walked into the door and were seated very quickly because during that time when I walked in it was still busy, so I was seated, given a menu, and a cup of water to drink. it didn't take long before a waitress/server came to take my order. I was very fast on knowing what I wanted due to I like Japanese cuisine! I ordered my food and It didn't take long to receive my first entree then my second and so on. They were very busy, i was surprised on that speed on how they give me my food so fast. Food: As a fan of Japanese cuisine, everytime I visit a Japanese restaurant, i always have to try their sushi. i ordered the Spider Roll, St. Helen Roll, and Firecracker. it was all delicious! I also ordered Beef Teriyaki which came with miso soup, house salad, white rice, sesame puffs, and of course the beef which tasted like steak...awesome! Atmosphere: It was lite and wasn't speedy at all, they don't rush you out. Very friendly waiter/waitress and very attentive to their guests. Maybe it's just me, but their lighting in most part was bright except where I was placed to sit at where quick dim. Overall experiences for my visit to Sushi Hana was great and memorable. I will definitely come back when i stop by Alberta street again...

It was unfortunate that both restaurants we wanted to go to on Alberta were closed on Monday. We passed by Sushi Hana on our walk and decided to give it a try after two failed attempts for lunch. There was no wait on a Monday afternoon and only a few people occupied the big dining area. Our first impression was that the decor was nice and modern. The menu was brief and self-explanatory. We got a total of four rolls between the three of us. I hadn't heard about this restaurant previously, so I had no expectations or prior judgments. When the rolls came out, they looked anything but fresh and delicious. The hamachi was lackluster and bland. The other fish were not fresh. Also, the ratio of rice to fish/veggies was like 70/30! I didn't come to eat just rice :( To add on to our disappointment, there was only one server and she slowly disregarded us as more tables filled up. We had to ask for our tea to be refilled and wave her down every time we needed something. All in all, if a sushi restaurant needs one thing, it's FRESH FISH. Sushi Hana just won't do...

I work down the street from Hana and was hoping to have a nice bento box lunch. I ordered the beef teriyaki and hot tea. The service was fine, it was lunch after all. The lunch came with miso soup, nothing special here, but not bad, then my lunch plate showed up. It was a thin cut of beef that was both dry and tough, a small bit of rice and an iceberg salad that was filled with water that it ruined every thing on the plate. Imagine a bad tasting slice of beef, almost flavorless on its own, swimming in a bath of lukewarm water. To top it off, there were no sesame balls (pictured) and it was $10. I get they are a sushi place, but if you are going to put something, anything, on the menu at least make it well. No more Hana for me.

I do enjoy high end sashimi and expensive taste, but if on a budget or just want to consume the rolls here's a good spot. The building and atmosphere is beautiful, presentation and creativity wonderful, friendly and accommodating. I try out many sushi restaurants but only come back to a few. I will be back often. Happy hour is from 11:30-6pm. Great menu.

I love this place! Fresh sushi, delicious udon soup, and the katsu don kicks things up notch with cheese and onions on top. I've always had great service so this place became one of my favorites after my first visit. Yum-omiter reading is through the roof!

  • Sue X.

I go there most of the time if I were in the area, mainly for the value of their sushi/sashimi. It may not be the cheapest, the freshes, nor the biggest, but overall it provides the best values on sushi items (not including rolls) among the few sushi restaurants i've been to in the area. Few items on happy hour all day long, try not to add extra stuff like those on to your table, it doesnt really worth it.

I LOVED this sushi spot and can't WAIT to go back! I found myself here as a spur-of-the-moment I-MUST-have-sushi-NOW lunch-ish date and was totally stoked on this place from the moment I walked in the door. The decor is clean and contemporary without feeling sterile. The full bar looked well stocked and beckoning on a hot summer day. The server was practical and alluring! (Read: hot girl and great service!) It turned out it was happy hour when we went, which of course was even more awesome. Happy hour is from I believe 11:30 till 6, and there's a GREAT sushi selection on the happy hour menu! I'm sure liquor is happily hourly priced as well, but when you're broke and hungry... wait. Okay, well on THIS day that I was broke and hungry, I ever-so-responsibly opted for fooooood. Between sushi & cocktails, it's a close tie though at any given moment. This sushi was well worth choosing responsibly and pragmatically.

Excellent sushi and the shrimp tempura was light and delicous. Tasty coconut prawns are hard to find but Hana's were yummy and not greasy at all. One criticsm - pls turn on the heat before opening! We had to keep our jackets on it was so cold in the restaurant. We come out to eat to be comfortable - we were a little disappointed that we were cold the entire meal.

Yum! New to Portlandia, we were out adventuring and decided that this place called Pine State Biscuits sounded absolutely divine - so we headed down to Alberta to partake, only to find out that they were closed... We will be back down there soon for brunch though! So - decided that sushi sounded good and popped into Hana. The restaurant is clean with cool, modern decor. We were seated in a comfy booth in the back corner.. very comfy. The house sake was above average, the veggie tempura was awesome! I happen to love asparagus, and there was tempura asparagus so I was thrilled! Miso soup was flavorful. We ordered three special rolls: The Alberta roll was the stand out - it was delicious! They have presentation down, everything looked gorgeous! The green tea mochi for desert was the perfect finish. Price wasn't bad.. one large hot sake, three special rolls, one bowl of miso soup, one house salad, veggie tempura and two green tea mochi for dessert all came to $52 including tip. Pretty sweet!

[5 stars] Sustainability: I can not recall anything specific to sustainability efforts. [0 stars] Service: The service was top notch, especially considering it was during their last hour of service. Both the sushi chefs and the server were friendly and welcoming of my partners custom ordered roll [5 stars] Bang for your buck: I definitely feel that the quality, creativity, and taste are equivalent to the cost. [4.5 stars] Overall: Between all of the factors of my "sushi standards rating scale" I would absolutely crown Sushi Hana my favorite Portland sushi house thus far!

The sign says: Hana Japanese Bistro by Sushi Hana. Forgive for a moment the unnecessarily long and mildy mystifying mouthful of a name -- after all, it's a 'thing' on Alberta, witness "Branch Comma A Whiskey Bar" -- and just be happy. Happy that there's finally a good sushi place in this neighborhood. Happy that the Faustian nightmare of Wine Down East ceased, and quickly. Happy that the sour unfriendly Zaytoon is long gone. Happy you can get an outstanding specialty roll, a generous bowl of udon, some pot stickers, and a steaming mug of gen matcha for about $15 on a cold, rainy February night. And with great service. As the 4-star rollover says, Yay! I'm a fan. I don't need to know why this is a "bistro".

I don't want to mislead people with the 3 star rating. First off, the service here was great, the sushi here was great. However, that is not all I ordered and I feel like I should talk about it... I write a noodle/Ramen blog called "NoodleTimePDX" and Hana was my stop for Japanese cuisine this week. I obviously was going to give my readers a place on Alberta that served on-fire ramen, as a lot of people are around there this time of year, searching that "hot, filling, quick" item out. As I said before, the menu for sushi is great. Fresh fish, made with great presentation, etc. I can't stress that enough, the sushi was delightful. HOWEVER, I look at their ramen selection and I notice some promising options: Seafood, Chicken, and Pork. Okay so this should have been my first red flag because true ramen spots would use the cultural names for these items. I figure, the heck with it, it's probably just so Shoyu/Shio (soy/salt) ramen, they don't want to confuse the average customer. I can deal with that, BRING ON THAT UMAMI GOODNESS..... So I order the spicy pork and the ramen comes out (my main course mind you). At first it has an odd smell to it, I stir it around and notice the pork is run of the mill boiled pork. Like it was in the fridge for any possible dish and was thrown in there. I bite into the pork, it tastes like a fridge. Yeah. The broth is really salty, but not good salty---Cup Noodles satly--- Then I notice something I couldn't believe... The NOODLES ARE PACKET NOODLES!!!! Like 50 cents at the store, broke in college, last resort noodles. The kind that if you don't eat them in under one minute, give you heart burn and turn into mashed potatoes in a bowl... Too bouncy, too "bricked", processed tasting. I tried folks, I really did. 5-6 options for RAMEN on the menu and these are the noodles they are using???!?!?! Ramen is as Japanese as Apple Pie is American!!!! I about got up and left. Instead though, I kept my cool, and kept eating for the review's sake. The veggies were very obviously tossed in there last minute (white and green onion) and the egg was an egg from a pan, cooked over easy... Le sigh. It's not just that it was all packet either. I have put together some DARN good packet ramen in the past, but this just seemed lackluster. I'll keep the rest for the blog but someone needs to tell these folks about Sun Noodle Co at LEAST before they keep serving this slop to unsuspecting Portlanders. I'll be back for the sushi maybe but I really hope they stop with the Maruchan.

A Groupon brought me to Hana and my first impression walking in was 'what a beautiful space - very modern, clean and open.' More importantly was the food. We tried four different rolls, each one delicious. And hands down the best baked green mussels I have ever had. And we had excellent service. Even the greatest meal can be diminished by bad service. I will definitely be be back to try all the other items on the menu. And they have happy hour too!

When I asked Yelp to point me to Sushi Hana (the conveyor sushi bar) it took me here. Although Yelp calls this place Sushi Hana, its misleading; the restaurant front says "HANA by Sushi Hana" I was hungry and about to pee my pants, so I decided to go in. The decor was modern if dark. There were only two or three occupied tables and one server. I was there by myself and had to ask to be seated at the bar when the server tried to put me next to a table with a couple having lunch. It bothered me that out of the many, many seating options she wanted me to knock elbows and avoid the sidelong stares of strangers. Eating alone makes me self-conscious enough thanks. I was given a million menus, the number of them was just silly, and a dry erase marker with no explanation as to what she expected me to do with it. The prices were high, even for their Happy Hour menu. My intention had been to spend $6 or $7 at Sushi Hana, but an average HH roll here cost $8. After sitting there for a while trying to look helpless enough to get the server's attention, I ordered a spicy tuna roll and katsu don (breaded chicken cutlet on rice). I was given miso soup, which I don't normally like, but I tried it. The tofu cubes in it were soooo tiny. I imagined someone who actually likes miso would probably be miffed about that. My spicy tuna roll was boring, but definitely spicy. Hot, even. Eating it felt like a chore. The katsu don is a very familiar dish for me, a favorite. But what I was brought was cafeteria food. The most disturbing thing about it was it was covered in cheese. I can't recall ever eating Japanese (or Chinese or Korean) that dumped cheese on their food. This cheese had a strange taste, which altered the entire texture of the meal, softening the breaded coating of the chicken. The chicken itself was chewy, like it had been microwaved. It tasted peppery, like chicken fried steak out of the frozen section at Winco. I'm certain that it was not freshly prepared that day. I was overcharged on my bill, with fifty cents being tacked on to each item. I balanced the experience by leaving no tip, which I typically don't do -- guilty conscious, which is what compelled me to eat here at all after using their bathroom. Definitely a weird experience, sadly the most subpar Japanese cuisine I've had to date.

Really, really good. We had originally walked into Zilla and found a certain stank of fish and heat inside and immediately left, and headed to Hana. Thank goodness! Nice and cool, great service, and much cleaner interior. Oh and the sushi was GREAT. Albacore sashimi, the toro special, scallops, salmon, tuna, even the unagi was incredible where many sushi joints ruin it. Great presentation as well. Will happily return and forget we even contemplated the other place. Yummmmm. Only reasons not a 5 star are that a) the menu is pretty confusing with too many pages and kind of listings to figure out, and b) no cocktails (I know, I'm a bit spoiled remembering how good the former bar was that sat here...).

This place is Japanese a slight step above Portland's casual Japanese restaurants without an increase in price. Sushi is fresh and the portions are larger than some of the other Japanese restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is more encompassing; you're transported into a place removed from the noisy and off-putting Alberta street scene. The place is designed well in that regard.

I had a Groupon for $30 of sushi for $15. I wanted to take my friend to celebrate her new job and this was a great place because she just had a bad sushi experience (elsewhere) she needed to redeem herself from. First off, the space of Hana is intimate yet modern. I realize a lot of PDX restaurants all look the same but they took the style cues from some and made it their own. Hands-down, besides the food, the service was incredible. Efficient yet friendly, our waitress explained the menu thoroughly and filled our water glasses quickly without being intrusive; plus, she was very friendly. Ordered the Sushi Lover A, which consists of 7 pieces of sushi + your choice of a roll. I ordered the spicy tuna and my friend ordered the hamachi. Some of the pieces were like butter; however, every piece was delicious. Even the miso soup and salad were fresh and delicious; the pickled ginger was very fresh - popping in your mouth with every bite. The location of Hana is great because you can stroll Alberta afterwards and patronize some of the other local businesses. All in all, I will definitely be back. People can knock Groupon all they want, but I use Groupon to get me to explore different parts of Portland.

Once again, thank you Hana! For being such a warm and personal group of staff. Your food is always meticulously beautiful. Your sincerity, genuine. Words fall short of how much I appreciate your delicious food, clean ambience, and above all your wonderful team...truly a rival to the best of them! Sincerely, your adoring neighborhood local.

I've been here alot, and the food is great, the service is great, the price is fair, and it's never crowded. Zilla is much closer to my house, but I go to Hana because the staff is way more awesome.

I love the sushi here! The rolls are creative and fun, and always beautifully displayed. My favorite is undoubtedly the Crazy Monkey - I would not have thought to put jalapenos on a sushi roll, but by golly it really works! I haven't had the other non-sushi dishes, but my sister ordered the Udon and said it was very good. My only complaint is that the service is not usually very fast. I have been there several times, and there have been more than one instances that I had to wait for nearly 45 minutes after ordering to get my food. The food is so good, though, that I keep going back anyway.

Hana is a good go-to sushi joint. It's close to my house and I'll usually choose it when I'm in the mood for sushi that I know I can count on. It's the same every time, and the service is usually always fast and dependable. I like their creative rolls a lot and their prices are moderate. The atmosphere is comfortable. If you can score a corner booth, it's the best.

This is my favorite sushi place! I love the atmosphere and sushi! The prices are fair for the quality. The Hawaiian Poki tuna and Lady Bug rolls are my favorite!

They have a very good menu that has some great unique rolls if you are tired of the same old rolls. They also make most of the sauces in house including soy, ponzu and eel sauce. I have had very good service here and enjoy the atmosphere.

Friday night and we went for a stroll down Alberta. We were hungry and decided to stop wherever our feet and stomachs landed us. Sushi sounded good. It always sounds good. Hana has a grand opening sign hanging outside. How long has this place been open? Beats me. Clean, modern decor. The waitress brought us water and hot tea ASAP and was very attentive. GF got tempura. I asked the waitress to describe the Korean chirashi. She said it was basically the same as the Japanese chirashi, except it comes with hot sauce. Okay, I was game. Pardon me, but here comes a major digression... Fellas, don't ever look at your cell while you're out to dinner with your lady. It's very rude and you'll look like a total douchebag. Furthermore, you might get an email that is so disturbing that it'll kill your appetite and ruin your meal. That's all I'm sayin'. Back to the review... I didn't eat much of my meal and the waitress seemed very concerned that I didn't like it. However, it was actually quite delicious. The fish and the veggies were very fresh tasting. GF devoured her tempura. All in all, I like this place. I'll have to go back soon--and leave the phone at home.

I really wanted to like this sushi spot. There is a dearth of sushi in our neighborhood and I was so happy to see it when it opened. I took my kids soon after one night when my husband was out of town. I will not be returning and here is why: 1) One of my kids had a bad allergic reaction to something he ate. Considering he only had plain udon soup and salmon sashimi I was baffled (and he has eaten them before at other places with no problems). But he got hives on his face and we left soon after. 2) When I got home I found that the food did not agree with me, either. I will not elaborate. 3) I asked for a sashimi sampler and did not get the right thing. 4) I ordered the deep fried tofu and it never showed up yet it showed up on our bill. They removed it when I pointed it out. I thought the place was nice and the staff was friendly. If my only complaints were 3 and 4, I would likely go back. However, you don't mess with my kid's health or mine. Period.

Delicious nigiri and rolls. The soups, tempura and teriaki also looked good and we will return to try them. House sake was quite okay. Prices are reasonable especially duing happy hour ?-6 pm. Relaxed and tidy atmosphere. Highly recommended.

We went on a Sunday night. We waited 10 minutes before receiving water or menus. That being said, the service improved after I expressed my frustration with the situation. The sushi was great! Really enjoyed and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I also ordered a hot meal which was just ok in comparison to their sushi. Taste was good and again, loved the sushi..next time will stick to the sushi menu only and skip the warm plates..afterall, its a sushi bar right?

I'd really give Hana 2 1/2 stars if i could - dead neutral. There's not a single thing I can say that is good or bad here. it's a sushi place. it simply exists. kind of zen when you think about it.

I used to love this restaurant until I was disrespected by the owner of this restaurant. My family and I always eat in house, but I ordered food to go because we have a 6 month old at home. When I got home, I noticed that our usual Energy Roll was missing from our order so I called in to speak with someone. I spoke directly with the owner who does not believe in customer service. They did not keep my order sheet, but instead referred to the receipt they gave me as the end all to be all. Instead of admitting they made a mistake and offering to make it right, he insisted that it is up to me to review the order AND the receipt before leaving the restaurant. I work in the service industry so I understand the power and importance of customer service. I am not in the business of trying to pull a fast one on a business. I asked that they comp the roll that was left off of our order the next time we come in. Instead of comping 1 roll (when we usually order at least 3), it was more important for the owner to lose a long time customer. We'll miss your food, but I will never ever recommend that ANYONE EVER GO TO THIS PLACE EVER AGAIN! GFY.

I'm knocking this place down because of customer service. The Sushi was decent/good and I like their more creative selection. It was priced moderately and they have nice long happy hour (1130-6). So maybe I was there on an off night, a tuesday, and got some bad service. However it did seem as if both the waitresses were doing this strange hurricane pattern over the restaurant and didn't seem to have an assigned section. The two of them also played barback. So our service suffered. We were left standing at the door for a long time, I did not receive a whole roll that I ordered, once my drink was empty it stayed empty and my food came out of order with one roll coming before my edemame. The service could use some polish but the food wasn't too bad. 3 stars.

Decent quality sushi at great prices - disappointed in everything but the fish though. Escolar (white tuna) sashimi was fabulous. Service and decor was a little lame

Decent sushi. Decent price. However, during HAPPY HOUR (3-8 I believe), the sushi always makes me a wee bit happier. :) The service was great and the sushi chef was very nice. The boat or bridge tray they bring the sushi on also made my day.

I love this place. It has a few downfalls, but the price and quality of the food, easily overshadow them. Their ramen is BOMB. And cheap. And can easily be more than enough food for two. Their sushi is also nothing to sneeze at. Prices are more than fair, and the ambiance and music are super doable. I find myself here regularly when near Alberta. And sometimes I just show up for that ramen...... Yum.

The food is decent but the service always challenging. They have some sort of policy to not take your plates away after you eat. And it's not because they're busy from a customer point of you. We eat here usually once every 2 weeks. Our last time there, our server tried to take our unfinished sake away for something to do I suppose but let us sit there for quite sometime with dirty dishes in front of us while no one was busy. They brought our dessert with our dirty dishes still on the table in front of us. It is quite unsettling as if they were really busy running around, I would understand and it's not like we're taking up tables that need to be flipped. Weird but we still eat there. So it's all about service there that rubs me wrong & if it continues, there are other wonderful sushi spots to eat at.

Yuck. Our waiter came to pick up the menu we wrote our order on and never came back until he brought us the check, what?! I specifically wrote on the order (and told the waiter) that I did not want unagi and what comes on top of my crab salad and roll...unagi. I didn't eat the roll and he never came by to ask how we were doing or if it was okay since it was unfinished, we ate one slice. I asked for real crab instead of krab and I've never seen real crab that looks like krab but that's what was on the salad and it was chewy and fishy. The crab in my rolls was not real either. Maybe they don't even have real crab since there was no extra charge on the bill but if that's the case, he should have said so. The rolls had no flavor and the shrimp on top of my Lady Bug was flavorless and chewy. I tried to kick up my rolls with the wasabi but I used ALL of it and it had 0 kick. I've never had wasabi that had no flavor or taste. To top it off my pinot grigio tasted bad. Food: 0 Service: -0 Atmosphere: 1 Never again...

Tonight was was my first time here. My parents and I are regulars at Saburo's down in Sellwood, but we wanted a change of pace from the LONG lines and subpar service that comes with eating there so we decided to try Hana on a whim. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with friendly staff and sleek, modern decor. We informed the waitress it was our first time there and she was very helpful in explaining what they had to offer. Our food arrived within a reasonable amount of time and the waitress took the time to let us know which rolls were which (sometimes you really can't tell, so I thought this was very helpful!). The portions weren't ginormous like ones we're used to at Saburo's, but we were more interested in taste and quality anyway, so we were very pleased that the food tasted great and came at a more or less reasonable price. And as a side note, I really enjoyed their music selection too. Bottom line: They have a wide variety of rolls that are creative and delicious. The waitress was really nice and provided great service. The atmosphere was very enjoyable and relaxing. A great place for a nice sushi dinner!

I've only been here once but the food and service were pretty good on a sat around noon, soon after opening. I like sushi and Hana was pretty good and fairly typical for Portland - Nothing super special about the food aside from it being good, balanced and fresh. The menu was on the medium side with a pretty good selection to choose from. The environment is modern, nicely decorated and clean. This location looks somewhat new and/or very well maintained. The ambiance is nice for lunch but might leave some feeling a bit cold with so much metal in the dining room. The fish was fresh when my wife and I went and the service was prompt but we were only one of three occupied tables in the restaurant. We ordered three rolls, miso soup, green tea and a Hawaiian poke salad. The presentation was nice; there was freshly grated purple radish accenting the plates and tobiko was on two of the rolls, which are both vibrant and striking colors - they taste good too. The fish tasted fresh to me and I have an EXTREME sensitivity to old fish. I can tell days before fish starts going bad by the pungent and overwhelming taste of ammonia that assaults my senses. Crab, shrimp and lobster exhibit this symptom sooner and more often. I don't know anyone else who gets this reaction from old fish but there are plenty of other accounts registered online so I am not alone and not crazy, in this case anyway... The Miso soup was pretty good, fairly standard - they use all of the basics - miso, tofu, light scallion and wakame with my favorite miso soup flavor additive Dashi (bonito). Some japanese restaurants cheap out and don't use dashi in their miso soup, it's what makes the soup taste, slightly salty and mildly of smoked fish (briny?). I make miso soup at home and Dashi IS THE MAGIC ingredient. The only thing I didn't like about the miso soup is that it was sweeter than any miso soup I have ever had. I'm not sure if they add sweetener or if they use a particularly sweet miso but that aspect is not one I prefer. From what I understand miso soup is a Japanese breakfast staple so perhaps it is traditionally a little sweeter than I am accustomed to, I don't know but I know I prefer my miso soup unsweetened. The miso soup was still good however and most American palettes probably won't notice the sweetness at all. The Hawaiian Poke salad was huge and well worth the price - The seaweed, mango and fish were fresh and there was a lot of it; my wife and I could have easily eaten just the Poke salad as a meal as we had enough leftovers for a small meal. Over all the service was prompt, tea was hot, presentation was good, fish was fresh and flavors were pretty well balanced. If I'm in the area again and wanting sushi I will definitely give Hana another try.

Nice comfortable space, friendly service, and the sushi itself was quite good. So why 2 stars? It was the most bland sushi i have every had...I didn't think it was possible for soy sauce and wasabi to have so little flavor. If you eat sushi purely for the taste of the then you might really like Sushi Hana. But if you eat sushi, in part, as a soy sauce/wasabi delivery vehicle, then you might want to go someplace else.

My favorite sushi ever, of all time, ever. We got three different specialty rolls and a sea weed roll. They were all bomb but the roll with the seared salmon on it is a must. it was called something "sun". Our waitress was adorable and attentive as well. We will be back!

Hana by Sushi Hana on NE Alberta offers Sushi and the standard Japanese fare in a modern, yet comfortable environment. For sushi they offer a moderately expansive menu of the most common stateside sushi selections (nothing too wild, rare, or creative). Their prices were average for this kind of food, and they offer a M-F happy hour with modest discounts on drinks and select food items. If you want drinks and appetizers you could escape with a good value. The slightly industrial modern decor matches the Alberta neighborhood to the Japanese theme, without being too sterile to enjoy. The music selection was enjoyable and not too loud. Staff was all friendly and the food was served in very good time. My wife had yakisoba (made from wheat flour) and was not impressed. She said it was too juicy and not all that tasty. My buddy had sashimi octopus and salmon and said it was excellent. I asked about all of their udon options (vegi, chicken, or seafood) and asked for the seafood udon. What I got seemed to be mostly chicken, with one shrimp mixed in. Perhaps I'm mistaken and the chicken was something else, but there wasn't much seafood or variety in the meat so I tend to think the waitress got confused by my many questions. With that said however, it was very tasty. The broth and noodles were very good, and the fried egg was fantastic. I've had better noodles, but overall it was a great meal. They also had a spice mix of ground chilis, seaweed, salt, and orange peel that was fantastic on the soup. The only down side to that was when the waitress grabbed it from us as she asked if another table could use it because they only had one jar. I wanted to share, but we didn't see it again and I was only halfway through my soup. That was kind of infuriating and I would be sure to complain if it happened again. Another minor gripe was their beer menu. My buddy got a jack & coke in record time so that was nice. I ordered a beer; which is usually Kirin with Japanese food; which was on their menu; but which was crossed off along with about half their beers. I couldn't tell what was on-tap from the bottled selection, but they did have a number of old stand-bys that go great with food so it wasn't a big deal. I hope they can stabilize their beer menu so it's easier to order from. Overall we had a very nice meal and all agreed it was a moderately good value. My wife liked my food enough that her unfavorable review of her food won't dissuade her from eating there again...soon we hope.

This place rocks, I have no idea why it is not constantly full. The happy hour runs Mon-Sat from 11-6. If you are in the Alberta neighborhood for lunch, an afternoon snack or an early dinner give this place a shot. While the sushi rolls are quite good, the other menu items take it over the top. AWESOME teriyaki, gyoza and coconut shrimp. GO NOW (if right now is happy hour)

Pretty good Japanese joint. Good service, nice contemporary atmosphere, moderate prices. The Hawaiian roll was tasty, the pork gyoza was light, the yakisoba was a bit on the sweet side but still quite good, the ramen somewhat unremarkable (Biwa is still the place for ramen in town, imo), although the broth had a nice subtle kick to it. Very extensive selection of rolls and sashimi, will definitely be heading back for further exploration of the sushi menu.

Good, but not great. I was really hoping to like it. Fish could have been a little colder. Nothing was wrong with it, they just elected to serve it at slightly cold and I prefer cold. Also, the rice was too big on the sushi. I'd definitely go back. It's above average for Portland.
