Okay so I came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch around 12:15. It was totally dead! The restaurant is huge. And the waiter was so nice! Very nice service and personality. The menu is pretty large so everyone can find something they like I'm sure! And the prices for lunch are unbeatable! Loved that lunch prices were very affordable. We had a red curry and a noodle dish. THe red curry came with rice (you didn't have to ask for rice on the side for extra). And the curry was good! not too spicy and just sweet enough. With a big portion. The noodles were odd. very very soupy. I didn't really want to eat them because they were so soupy and gooey. It actually came in a soup bowl too. Regardless of the soup, it still tasted good. So many the chef just had an off day? I may go back and try again, but it's kind of out of my way.

Okay, so this is ridiculous. I've stayed away from this place because of the reviews bit finally stopped it and got the Larb and it was totally FANTASTIC, huge, fresh, beautifully presented and I am going to take every one of my friends here forever.

Ginger chicken! Cheap cocktails. Funny waiter. Pretty much perfection for a girls night.

Since this was the only place that wasn't busy on Alberta during lunch time my coworkers and I decided to give it a try. We also didn't have much time, and looking back I think we should have taken the time to go to my usual Thai Noon down the street. While the people who work here were so nice and sincere..the food was really not great. We ordered the lemon grass chicken, the cashew, and the larb. The cashew came with very little flavor or vegetables and my coworkers really disliked their food as well. I won't be coming back here since there is much better Thai food on Alberta but wish the really sweet owners all the best!

This place was a ghost town on a Saturday night, but the food was darn tasty! Not only that, but consistency is great. I came to Halo a few times about 2 years ago and now back in Portland and it's still banging. The decor and atmosphere are zero frills signaling that the Thai owner puts all efforts into the food. Cocktails are whipped up with fresh ingredients. On the last venture imbibements included a fresh kaffir lime leaf muddler and ginger muddler - all extra pulpy and delicious! Green salad rolls and spring rolls were both delicious, although the spring rolls are more stellar. Spring rolls were perfectly crisped on the outside, not greasy, and the veggie mix innards even contained some potato (extra carbohydrate bonus!). The rolls came with a BBQ-peanut dipping sauce which was a nice change-up from the ho-hum everyday peanut sauce. Noodle dishes were ordered for mains. Let's start with the good: red curry noodles pack heat (medium-spicy) and a nice curry pop, however, it did not come with wide rice noodles as promised and instead spaghetti type noodles, but I was lame and didn't bring this up to the server/owner. The sesame noodles are rich and ultra savory tasting - something perfect for a cold Portland night - note to self to order this dish when it starts getting cold again. Ordered a mango sticky rice to go, but was a little disappointed as the mango seemed to be almost from a can? I did appreciate the specs of almost/flax dusted on top though. The entire meal with tip only set us back $50 which is not bad for a Saturday night dinner date with drinks.

Ten years of coming here and I'm always so happy. The garlic lovers is my jam but everything is delicious. And Chin, the owner, is enough to keep me coming back for another decade.

Finally tried Halo on Alberta, which is ridiculous because it's right down the street from my house. I'm sorry I waited so long, and have already been three times in as many weeks! I have had a pretty good range of menu items in that time, and have enjoyed them all. I'm a big fan of both the salad rolls and the friend spring rolls, and of the cashew stir fry, they were especially fresh and flavorful. The restaurant itself in clean and I can't really speak of most of the staff because the same sweet man has been working every time I go in. If I had to pick a beef, it would be that they aren't open on Sundays, and that's when the Thai food jones hits hardest.

Stopped here for some take out and have decided I like this place enough to go back. With the knowledge I now have, I think my next time back will be a bit more successful. This is what I learned: Green Rolls--- lame. Barely any tofu. Tons of Romaine. Noodles weren't right, and they were rolled terribly. As soon as they were dipped into the subpar peanut sauce, they fell apart. I was not pleased. I always look forward to spring rolls, but these were simply lame-o. Maybe it was a bad day, maybe the spring-rolling-expert had a hand ailment, or maybe these spring rolls always leave you wanting- I'm not sure, but I know I won't be ordering these again. However- the main entree was delicious! The Sesame noodles with tofu was wonderful. Nice portion, tasty Yakisoba noodles, some good veggies mixed in, and tofu cooked expertly to give a bit of bite and lots of flavor. The prices were fair and the menu had some really great looking items! I'll be back to try some of the other items on the menu. Yellow curry with sweet potato, you're calling my name!

I love this place! Halo Thai is our neighborhood go-to Thai restaurant, hands down. The owner, Chin, is a total character and is always very friendly and helpful in offering suggestions from the menu. I bring my parents here every year when they visit and they love talking to him. When I'm not feeling well, I send the hubster over for take-out soup and Chin's special drink of blended ginger, honey and tea. It's delicious and totally cures what ails you. I'm sad to see some of these other reviews. I have a pretty sensitive stomach and have eaten here more times than I can count. Never had an issue. I usually get Pad Thai--boring maybe, but always delicious. The green curry is also very good and the coconut soup is awesome. There are a million Thai restaurants on Alberta and, personally, I think Halo is the best.

Mediocre at best. Nothing too terrible, nothing too great. Too salty, but they were nice about not making it too sweet.

I absolutely love this place. You can go in one time and talk to the owner. He will never forget you or your favorite dish. I love this place. Great food for the money and big portions.

Halo Thai gets my vote for the best Thai food in North Portland. The food is always fresh, and unlike many Portland Thai restaurants, can actually be made with a 5/5 star spiciness. The drunken ahi is phenomenal, as is the larb, and various stir fried options. CHeck out the drink menu as well....there are intersting options.

I've lived here for 26 years, and this place is the best Thai food place in all of Portland.

Their pad thai is delicious and the peanut butter sauce of the spring rolls : Amazing. Because it is a family owned business the ambience is comfortable and welcoming. They are not shy with the spiciness - HOT Will burn your mouth if you don't like spicy like I do . They are not shy on Shrimps as the others Thai places !!!

My sister and eight year old nephew were in town and my sister was extremely hungry. So I pulled up yelp, noticed Halo Thai on Alberta. My sister loves Thai food and my nephew hasn't really had a whole lot of experience with Thai. So, we drive over to Halo Thai and notice there isnt a single patron in there. Score for us! Nothing like having a whole place to yourself! Mind you, this was a Wednesday at prime dinner hours (about 5:30pm). We walk in, after checking to make sure they were in fact open. We are greeted by the gentleman working there with a huge smile and he was super attentive without being overbearing. We quickly figured out what we wanted and ordered. My sister got the Sesame Noodles (#48), my nephew got the Chicken Satay (#5), and I got the Pad Lard Na with Pork (#52). The food was hot, the spice level was great we both got medium heat, and the portions were HUGE. After eating my fill, I still had half the bowl left of my Pad Lard Na, which I gladly took home for lunch the following day. It was so delicious both days! I would recommend this place to anyone. Not sure why more people don't frequent this awesome little jewel.

The place was empty at 4:30pm Thursday. We ordered salad rolls, pad Thai and red curry. All with tofu. Salad rolls were really wide in size and hard to eat because the bottoms were cut off and everything was falling apart. Tsk tsk. The peanut sauce was sweeter than other places we've tried. Over all salad rolls were "ok". It took some time for our dishes to come out, but I guess since they were empty, that was expected. Red curry was lots of liquid, tofu, bamboo shots (I think) and A LOT of onions. I mean it was mostly onions. What? Taste and smell was VERY gingery. Came with very little rice, like a small scoop. They should have named this onion curry. Probably worst red curry I've ever had so far. Pad Thai was overly sweet and sour. I didn't like it. Place itself wasn't the cleanest I've seen, we sat next to a window and it was filthy. But floor and tables were clean, the smell was normal. I would give it two and a half stars if I could, the service was polite, everything else...we wouldn't go back.

Extremely good Pad Thai! Friendly staff/management. Very fast and convenient service. Don't be fooled by their online menus. They have a very extensive menu in store. Highly recommend.

Great little Thai restaurant! Our server, Chin (also the owner), was super friendly with a wonderful sense of humor and catered to all our needs. The shrimp salad rolls with peanut sauce were fresh and tasty. The pad kew mau (spelling ??) with mushrooms was delicious. Even though, it could have had a lot more spice (I ordered it spicy). I was craving pineapple fried rice and theirs was amazing! It was very flavorful with tons of pineapple! I'll definitely be back.

I am a huge fan of trying new Thai restaurants and have probably been to 30+ places in the last few years. That being said, this place had the absolute worst food out of any Thai restaurant I have been to. I am shocked at how many positive reviews there are. Halo Thai is the closest Thai restaurant to where I live, so I really REALLY wanted to like it. I ordered a curry noodle dish with tofu. The sauce had a sweet and bitter quality that came off a bit vomitous to me. Not to be too graphic but, the tofu was dry and shriveled, resembling my cats' litter box treasures. My husbands' meal was similarly unappetizing. I left most of my food and made a vow never to return. I did appreciate the owner, so I have to give a star for that. He came across in a creepy-cool way and had a dry sense of humor. Too bad I dislike the food.

Some of the best yellow curry. It was delicious. Great and friendly services. $4 cocktail specials. I was surprised that it didn't have more people. It was a little gem. The food was delicious. The space was clean. Great overall.

Pad Thai is amazing!! Came here with a friend and left very happy with the food, chi tea and the prices:) it was only us in there on the very rainy day and the man was so nice and have great conversation. Best Thai I've had in Portland this far!

While strolling down Alberta I stumbled upon this place because nothing says lunch like Thai food to me. Upon arriving we were immediately seated by the owner. He was very humorous and quirky. It's always nice to have someone put a smile on your face and make you feel welcome. The place was very clean and organized for the most part. I t had a very welcoming feeling. The two doors to enter the place made it a little confusing, but I was able to find my way through the right door. The food on the hand was to die for. Get me a casket and bury me fast. A few of the others that left reviews complained about not being advised about the spiciness of the food, but I was made full aware of the temps. I proceeded with cautioned and streamlined through every once of it without wincing. I guess I have a tolerance for spicy foods. I had the Pad Thai, which was full of bold flavors and went down smoothly, The right amount of spice, the right amount of veggies, the right amount of peanuts and the right portion. My only complaint would have to be the water. I swear it tasted "old". It had a creepy after taste, but with that said I will definitely return. This kicks the crap out of Thai Noon.

I've had lunch and dinner here several times and ALWAYS leave completely satisfied! In fact Halo has become one of a few restaurants I invite persons to for busniess meetings due to its neat, tidy and inviting atmosphere. "Chin" the owner also the server is a great guy.... Pleasant sense of humor and eager to please! If you like it HOT, I mean back room, probably in violation of federal law, back woods of Thailand ol' fashion HOT..... Tell Chin, I think he has some secret family recipe made from dragon sweat and top soil imported from Chernobyl Russia! :)

I went over thirty three years without having ever tried Thai food. Then I was lucky enough to move into a city that has a very poor selection of my favorite going out foods (Chinese, Indian, Pizza...). Combine that with the fact that I live within 7 blocks of four different Thai places, and I quickly discovered a replacement for the aforementioned foods. The food at Halo Thai, despite probably being the third or fourth best I've ever had, is not the best Thai food, even on Alberta. I can't point out anything 'bad' about it, but it just doesn't stack up to places like New Thai Blues. However, I could eat at Halo three times per day for a few weeks and not get sick of it. My main complaint, I guess, has to do with the lunch portions. Sure, they're cheaper than the dinner portions, but every other Thai place I've been to for lunch (and there have been plenty) has charged around the same amount for more food. My favorite part about the food? The heat! I've always prided myself on my ability to withstand spicy foods, but moving to Portland has presented quite the challenge. The first time I went to Halo Thai, I was asked how spicy I wanted my food on a scale of 1 to 5. I said five and was told no, that I needed to try the four first. I handled the four and on my next visit was allowed to attempt the five. I'm proud to say that I finished everything on my plate without dying, crying, or diving in the Willamette. Still, it was probably the third hottest thing I've ever tried (behind a Thai food cart near the DMV and the special hot sauce at Oskar Blues in Longmont, Colorado). Even if I had found the food disgusting, the prices too high, and the location inconvenient, I would still give Halo at least a couple stars. This is because of the owner. Whenever I go to a place that takes me money and see the owner working there almost every day, I am encouraged and impressed. When the owner has a personality like the man at Halo Thai, it's pretty much a guarantee that I will frequent the establishment.

Thumbs down on all accounts. Let's start with the worst first: 1. Wait time. It took FOREVER to get our order. They also brought the appetizers out with the meal, which we ordered because we were starving and we didn't want to wait a long time to start eating. They brought out several orders for people to pick up while we were waiting, so maybe it's better if you order take out well in advance. 2. Cleanliness. The table next to us had some documents laying on it. It also had a box of tissues, a food cream dispenser, and somebody's socks on the floor. Now, we didn't see the owner sit down at the table, but the odds that a random patron brought that with them and then forgot is pretty low. Even then, one of the staff should have cleared it in the hour/hour and a half we were there because it was the last thing you want to see sitting out in a restaurant. 3. Food. The food didn't taste very good. That's especially weird since it was our first time and we ordered Pad See Ew. I've never had a Thai placed that screwed up Pad See Ew before; I thought it was impossible. We didn't get food poisoning as some others seem to suggest, but that's about all I can say for that. 4. Service. The waiter (who I think was also the owner) was not rude in any way, but he seemed kind of anti-social, i.e. wasn't very inviting. He didn't check to see how we were doing after being there for a long time waiting. 5. Price. We thought it was a couple dollars above the norm for the type of food. There are several Thai places on Alberta. I would save my time and money and more time and go somewhere else.

Halo Thai more like Hellno Thai! First off the owner greeted us with a stern expression and crossed arms! Waitress was oblivious to many things but was at least friendly. Came in with a group of 3 and 2 were actually hungry so we ordered an appetizer crab puffs, curry noodles entree and PINEAPPLE fried rice entree ( notice how pineapple is in caps, well get to this later. ) The crab puffs were close to being inedible. They literally were hard as rocks to chew. I thought about consulting with my dentist afterwards to see if any of my teeth were chipped or needed replacement. -strike 1 Next was the fried rice. Oops I meant pineapple fried rice. No wait I actually mean plain fried rice because they forgot the pineapples. It was just a plate with rice and some vegetables. It was lacking in any flavor whatsoever and I felt like I could have made the dish way better myself. -strike 2 They never got to a strike 3 so that's why I'm sticking with a 3 star review. The curry noodles wasn't my entree but I tasted them and it was good and the person who got it enjoyed it very much. It was one of their specials so maybe I ordered the wrong thing... But how could you mess up pineapple fried rice?

1This is my neighborhood Thai restaurant ; I go here often as the dishes are uniformly good and the prices are fair. I especially recommend the stir fry dishes as I find asking for "medium+" is just the perfect level for me. The owner is always kind and the service is quick - all around a good place to get a comfortable meal to please the palate.

Returned this time for the coconut soup - perfect on a winter's day when dealing with a bad cold. Be aware, it's enough for a family of four, but hey, that's what leftovers are for. Good salad rolls and good service to wrap up a lovely lunch. Best Thai on Alberta for sure.

The Noodles In Red Curry was very good. I chose to have mine with chicken and was impressed by how quick it was for them to prepare the dish. Overall, the curry was just the right amount of spice I asked for, which is a great service that you don't always get with various Thai restaurants. Very flavorful, rich and full, and very filling!

We've tried every Thai place on Alberta and Mississippi, and this is the BEST ONE, hands down. Fresh, fast, and the owner is a blast. Fun guy. Wicked sense of humor.

  • Chelsea B.

Eh- mediocre. Wasn't bad, wasn't great. The crab puffs were a joke. They where mostly fried batter with the teeniest bit of crab in them and it wasn't very flavorful. 4 of them came out on this HUGE plate which made them look even more pathetic. We ordered our dishes spicy...no spice to them whatsoever. I don't know if what they consider to be spicy is weak, or if they just completely forgot to make the dishes spicy... Overpriced for what it is.

Being a gluten-free vegan, it is not always easy for me to find [tasty] Thai food. However, I think I have found a really great standby for any of my Thai cravings. Try: the Pad Thai noodles are a bit greasy, but delicious just the same. They come with lots of crunchy sprouts and roasted peanuts on top. If you are also gluten-free, you can't eat any of their fried rices or stir fries, because they put soy sauce in, BUT you can eat their curries, spring rolls, and, like I did, their Pad Thai (minus the egg if you're vegan). The atmosphere is comfortable, and the service is relatively quick and very friendly.

Not so good. We came here on Last Thursday, and the place really wasn't all that busy when we walked in, plenty of empty tables. We had to hunt down someone to take our order... TWICE. I ordered the green beans and they were terrible, the tofu was kind of burnt and the beans were mush. The owner seemed nice, but that just didn't make up for the awful food and service. :(

    (2)
  • Samantha S.

Great food and super fast service. My husband and I went here on a whim the other day and were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Pad Thai with Tofu and it was Amazing! It was able to be made gluten-free for me also--which is a necessity, since I have Celiac disease. **The Pad Thai Does have fish sauce in it (ask about this--it could change) and the sauce is already made, so be aware of that if you have allergies, etc... b/c it cannot be taken out.** The owner was pleasant, knowledgeable and funny. Just the perfect amount of interaction--especially since we were the only ones in the place at the time--we went at an odd time in the afternoon. Someone else came in for take-out and they were super-fast and friendly with her also--she seemed to be a regular which was a good sign. I ordered my Pad Thai Mild because I am not a huge fan of heat and it was perfect. My husband ordered his Pad See Ew (hope I got that spelling right) Medium and he said that it was perfectly spiced as well. Good sized portions on both of our meals--though my Pad Thai was a little bigger dish ( I did not mind one bit!). Decent prices and the food tasted very fresh. Maybe the other reviewers went on an "off" day, which is why they had a poor experience. My only complaint was that the water tasted a little off--maybe not a great rinse or too much soap in the dishwasher or maybe my taste buds were not liking Portland's water that day--who knows? This would normally be a Huge thing for me, but the food was so good that I didn't care about the water and all the other dishes/silverware were fine. If it happens on a return visit, I definitely would say something though. We will definitely be going back--Soon, I hope!!

Love this place. Consistently fresh, spicy and delicious. I've been here several times and tried several dishes, all of them great, but the pad ke mao and the pad sa ew are what keeps me coming back. Nice job, Chin!

We originally went to have lunch at a nearby restaurant and discovered that they only serve brunch on the weekend - so we used our Yelp app to see what was nearby. Although another Thai restaurant close by had better ratings - we decided to try out Halo Thai because I didn't want to walk more than a couple blocks with my baby in his infant carrier (no stroller, that day). My friend and I had an enjoyable meal and above average service. The atmosphere is clean and nice for an asian restaurant. I would definitely eat here again if I was in the neighborhood.

I have had nothing but amazing experiences whether it was in the restaurant or take out to enjoy at home! The grilled salmon and brocolli is intense as like the the chicken pineapple fries rice! OMG!!!!! Mr. Chin is the best and you need to visit and partake in his amazing food ;)

The food here is consistently fresh tasting and well-seasoned. Though the owner's personality can be a little overbearing, I have never found him "creepy" as one commenter I read did. He just seems to be outgoing and like talking to people. The comment about him being creepy also said that you can't share food, which I don't believe is true; we share stuff every time. The places is never crowded that I've seen, but it I think it does good business, and I wouldn't worry that anything is old. Service has a few jagged edges in terms of organization, but everyone is friendly and the food is always very prompt, hot and delicious.

Well, I am definitely a fan. I came here with my brother and my bff and got the appetizer sampler ($11 I think), the red curry noodles with pork ($11), the fried catfish in chili sauce (about $14), and the Tom Yum soup with shrimp (about $10). The appetizer sampler was just alright. I actually really liked the chicken Sates for a change after so many bad versions in the US. I didn't really care for the little fried wontons, crab rangoon and egg rolls though. The red curry was also pretty dull. I did like the noodles in it. It reminded me a lot of Malaysian Laksa. The noodles were great, but there was barely any pork and the curry flavor was seriously lacking. The catfish in chili sauce was amazing! bottom line, best dish we had. It was cirspy, fresh, delish, but I did catch one pretty big bone. The sauce was outstanding though and it was a pretty good sized filet. however, in San Diego we typically get a whole tilapia for about the same price. finally, the tom yum was excellent and just as it should be. It was very flavorful and huge for the price. In addition, the "chatty" owner was a great guy. We were totally "wet brained" (AKA hungover) and he talked us through it and made some great recommendations. He also talked to us about Laos and Thailand (he is from Laos, not Thailand) and warned us of the dangers of SE Asia for the next time I return. Great guy, totally family-run place, I will continue to support when I'm in the area.

I came here when my usual haunt, Thai Noon, was too busy and I didn't have time to wait. The service was quick but maybe that was because the place was absolutely dead. We ordered some salad rolls that were....bland. That's all I can think of to describe them. A tube of nothingness. I ordered the chicken pad thai and it too was bland - the most bland Pad Thai I've had in Portland too this date. Also, later on in the evening, I was not feeling super-duper and ended up having a touch of food poisoning. Not cool, guys.

The owner makes a great Bloody Chin (That's his name, his version of a Bloody Mary) with muddled basil, cucumber and I could swear garlic. So good, and unexpected at a Thai place. Food was exceptional, we had sesame noodles and pad kee mao, both with tofu: Great presentation, portions just right. And as for other reviewers, if you go to a Thai restaurant and you don't get clarity on the spiciness, it's your own fault. We went with what they call "Medium +", since everything is at least medium spicy to start with. In retrospect, that was somewhat mild, but we kicked it up with the spice cart. (TIP: If you're not sure how spicy something will be, ask the server! They'll tell you! Weird, right!?!)

    (4)
  • Leesah T.

Halo Thai is just ok. The service was average, the food (I ordered the Pad Kee Mao) was average, and the drinks (fruit margaritas) were average, so if you're looking for average it might be just what you want. Halo Thai- here is my average, no frills review.

  • H M.

This place is a joke. When i first walked in it felt weird...but i moved on from my own feelings and continued to give it a shot. but the owner...he's just weird. i have a great sense of humor but he was seriously not funny. just creepy. and then when my husband went to order we discovered the icing on the cake...YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SHARE A DISH. You got to be kidding me? I dont give a sh*t if you tack on a sharing fee but at Halo you aren't even allowed to share. & then as we walked out he claimed "We don't do family style here". They dont know how to run a business. Period.

  • Adrienne A.

I had a bad experience at Halo Thai, and though it's possible it could have just been a crapshoot, a bad night for the manager/owner, or not representative of the restaurant as a whole, I still think it's right to share these things. I ordered the coconut soup with shrimp to-go. The guy was very nice and chatted with me while the order was being prepared, and that's about the only good thing I have to say about the experience. I got the soup home and it had chicken in it, not shrimp, even though I was charged for the shrimp version ($11.45 vs. $8.45-- that's kind of a big jump, right?). The soup was incredibly hot, so exercise caution when you request a certain level of spiciness. And then the next morning at 5 am I woke up with a moderate case of food poisoning, and spent all morning dealing with that (ah, euphemisms). There's 18 million Thai places on Alberta, and this is probably the worst.

I ate Halo Thai takeout for the first time last night. I ordered a veggie noodle dish that I eat from other Thai restaurants on a regular basis, so it is not an usual food for me. It was supposed to have baby corn but didn't. Disappointing but no biggie. It tasted fine, not the best Thai but certainly not the worst. Unfortunately though within 10 minutes of eating it I went from feeling great to awful nausea and vomiting. Food poisoning?! Whatever it was I am certain it was the food. Still recovering today.

Comparing this Thai restaurant on Alberta to the other Thai restuarants on Alberta, this is NOT the best. Skimpy on the meat in each dish of curry and, although the do have crab puffs a.k.a. ranggoon on the menu) it doesn't stand a chance when compared to Basil Bar's version. They do put the noodles in the curry when you want those instead of rice, but that's just not enough to secure top ratings. With so many Thai spots in the greater Portland area, they need to make things, well, greater.

GREEN CURRY. GREEN CURRY. GREEN CURRY. GREEN CURRY!!! The 5 stars are all for the delightful green curry. Some of the other things I've ordered have not been as great, and I always go back to the green curry.

I live in the neighborhood and strolled over to Halo Thai last night for dinner. I must say that I absolutely love this place! I was in Thailand for 2 months a couple of years ago and I am always on the search for a place that reminds me of my days there. If you are looking for an authentic tasting Thai dish, this is the place to go on Alberta. I have read other reviews on Halo Thai and I can not believe how hard others are to please; so, it inspired me to yelp about this place! Sure the decor is a little less than desirable, and if you go on a cold day, the heater isn't at high blast, but its about the food and service here. Every time I have been here, I have had the nicest servers and it makes the experience even that much more enjoyable! I have had the green curry, the shrimp and basil, spring rolls, salad rolls, shrimp and cashew, Mussaman curry.. and much more and EVERY TIME it is a delightful, mouth watering experience. This place also does the HOTness just right. Other places I ask for hot, and I end up having to ask for the side dish of peppers and fish oil. So, even when the heater isn't working properly, the dishes are so HOT you won't even notice! I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a spicy Thai dish, affordable prices, and a low key evening. There are other good Thai places on Alberta, but Halo Thai is always my top choice on where to go.

Not my favorite Thai place, but it's decent for the money.

this is not the best pad thai i've ever had. in fact, it was kinda gross. it was really greasy and salty and too much fish oil or some kind of weird sauce on it. the noodles were overcooked and hung limply about. i couldn't even finish it. i think i ate like five bites then took it home and devoured it later that night in my hotel room after a night of drinking. but i have to give them three stars because of the service, the ambiance and the full bar! :) this place is nestled in the uber cool Alberta Street Arts District. and they represent. nicely painted accent walls with cool art hanging on them. nice lighting and a chill vibe. the night we ate here there was a cool burner street fair thing goin on. i don't think i'd ever eat there again (food-wise) but i'd definitely stop there for a drink and then walk around Alberta and check out the other cool shops. i don't know what else to say. i really liked the proprietor, and I LOVED our waitress. she had tattoos and was extremely sweet and patient.

Loved it. From the decor (fantastic small paintings that I'd buy if I could and colorful walls) to the owner (hilarious and chatty), I love this place. My roommate and I started with the salad rolls and then split the wide rice noodle dish with tofu and broccoli and the cashew stirfry. The salad rolls were crisp and delicious and served with some of the best peanut sauce I've had. And the sauce was hot! No more cold salad rolls with cold sauce. The entrees were good - almost great. The cashew stirfry is generally one of my favorite Thai dishes and Halo Thai did it justice. The wide rice noodle dish wasn't my favorite. Something about the sauce didn't sit right with me. That's the only thing that brings my review down to four stars. Our meal was incredibly cheap considering how much we ate. This is now my local Thai spot. Oh, and they have Thai iced tea made with coconut milk! As a vegan who's been missing Thai iced teas for over three years now, this is more than enough to win me over.

Folks, this is just simply the BEST Thai food you are going to find in all of Portland! The ingredients are so fresh and the food is just nothing short of amazing-especially when compared to the so-so ho hum food from Chaba or the ever so mediocre Thai Noon. The service is quirky but good, the food is to die for!!!!!!!

The food was good and we enjoyed the creative mixed drinks- curry and alcohol, who woulda thunk? The host ( I assume he owns the place ) also has a good dry wit. The place wasn't overly packed on a wednesday night. The menu is also fairly accomodating for vegetarians.

By far my favorite of the several Thai offerings along Alberta. Consistently great food, very reasonable prices, friendly service. Try their sake over ice on a warm day.

One of my favorite thai places. I love that they use fresh bamboo shoots in their curries!

  • Dusty T.

The quality of the food here is much higher than your average Thai restaurant. The presentation is beautiful and they actually cook your meal to order, rather than grabbing a ladleful of curry that's been congealing over a burner all night. They cook the vegetables perfectly, and I love the way they prepare tofu. And be sure to try the tea--the owner mixes it himself and it's fantastic.

I have been here many times. i highly recommend the "Tiger in the woods." Chin the owner is really fun to talk to. He is friendly and cares about making good food. Be careful when ordering spicy food. Extra spicy is actually extra spicy. unlike other places.

Consistently great. Often pretty empty which is crazy to me. Owner will make your dish as spicy as you want it but be careful, medium is pretty hot!

Hesitate to let the word out about Thai place I love that this place is never busy because there's never a wait to eat at one of the best places for Thai in town. This is definitely in my top five, which is saying a lot with the dozens of places in Portland. I tend to stick to the same three things here because they've never let me down -- Phad Thai, green curry and the salad rolls. Fresh, kicky, and flavorful are just a few words that come to mind when I think of their food. It's all made fresh after you order, so be patient and nibble on the tasty salad rolls as an appetizer. Best part is you can get out of there for under $10. Tip: Big portions here so order two mains and split them for variety.

  • Christen M.

I can't figure out why this restaurant is never busy either. The staff are friendly, the food is tasty and spicy, and, as Thai places on Alberta go, prices here are on the low end. The spring rolls are wonderfully fresh and tasty; I also heartily recommend the green bean curry.

Do Thai people go to bed early or something? This was our third attempt to get seated at a Thai restaurant at 9 on a Saturday night, so we were thankful that this chatty restaurateur was willing to seat us at this "late" hour. The food was average, the service friendly and prompt, the price reasonable. There might be better places in the neighborhood, but this one is A-OK, and ... yeah, 3 stars.

I have been going to Halo since they opened, the food and the service are always exceptional, this is my favorite thai restaurant in town! I don't understand the negative reviews. I almost always share a dish & have never been told any nonsense about that not being allowed. The food is always fresh and made with care. Chin is a character, he chats with the customers and is very attentive. I love the green salad rolls, green bean lovers, pad see ew & thai iced tea... Yummy yummy! Be careful if you ask for spicy... It can be quite HOT!

  • sarah k.

the food is...good. the service? amazing!!!! so i don't know how to rate this place. the tom kah gai soup was really bad. i think thee most awful soup i've had... almost ever. i'm having horrible feelings of guilt because the dude (owner?) was extremely nice and attentive which is rare and i don't want to dislike (hate). so i won't. for en tree's we had the green bean dish and a cashew fried rice. i think they would have been delicious if they hadn't been fire hot. funny, the only other table, also complained.. 'i thought i asked for medium., but now i have no feeling on my tongue.' and still the hospitality shone through. we have a lot of leftovers but not because there was a lot of food. love you guy!!

  • Reed W.

Wasn't impressed with this place. I had the Green Curry. The veggies were soggy and way over done. The food was not piping hot like you normally get at a Thai place....it was lukewarm. And man...did they run out of rice? What's with the tiny little baby sized scoop? Wouldn't go back here with all the other Thai places to go to that at least cover the basics.

Just got back from my fist visit to Halo Thai and WOW. My first impression was fantastic. My husband and I tend to enjoy REALLY spicy food. We have tried several other places claiming to cater to different spice preferences but have always been, sadly, disappointed when we've asked them to make it as hot as possible... Well, not today. The owner took our order and asked how spicy... We told him to make it as spicy as they could.... damn, it was the spiciest Thai food I've ever had. I was impressed not only by the spice level but the taste and quality of the items ordered. So for those of you who are not fans of super spicy, at least you'll be getting tasty quality ingredients that taste delicious. With or without the spicy. They (proudly) do not serve Sriracha "Rooster Sauce", but rather make their own version which is far better in flavor and is to die for. We liked it so much we asked if we could buy some to take home and they obliged. I will definitely go back to Halo Thai and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for good Thai food. Especially if you want a place that will ACTUALLY prepare your food as spicy as you want it. Maybe even spicier.

So this was the closest Thai place to my house when I lived in the Alberta area. As it was so close and I am lazy I ended up getting take out from Halo Thai many times. I am not sure if the quality dipped and they decided to raise the prices to compensate for that fact, or if the price adjusting was in no way related to the decline in quality. Let us set the record straight, this is not a bad place, it just isn't a very good deal for the price.

Have you ever gone to a Thai restaurant and ordered a noodle dish with an exotic name and ingredient listing, only to receive a clump of noodles you can't untangle in time to enjoy your dish while still hot? Or, like mod said, the amount of chili peppers on top of your entree is supposed to represent the heat of the dish? Halo Thai puts an end to those sad, disappointing experiences, serving food that's prepared with lots of love and care, cooked as mild or as hot as you prefer. The owner and his sister will serve you up the same goodness they would eat. If you're a lover of heat, ask for a little extra of their homemade chili sauces on the side - they are so fresh and flavorful, you'll want to eat them by the spoonful. And, when you visit, make sure to ask what's on special - these dishes are usually an exceptional treat!

I'd give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Our meals were tasty. We had the green (vegetarian) salad rolls to start - sauce was great, but the salad rolls a bit bland. We should have went with the meat ones. We shared two entrees - lemongrass chicken and a ginger tofu meal. Both entrees were not hot when we received them, thus reducing the star count. A bit monotonous as well (the chicken dish was only chicken, green beans, and a ton of sauce - so after awhile it got a bit tired), and they used preservatives on the vegetables (which I react poorly to). The second star off for service - not too speedy or attentive, but was friendly. The special hot tea was excellent, and portions generous.

I have attempted to enjoy Thai food at a least a dozen restaurants in the Portland area. Halo Thai remains a consistent no fail pleaser. The atmosphere is simple and pleasant directly on NE Alberta (and 16th), not too large, family business with a chatty owner, occasionally his son and his sister manning the kitchen. My personal favorite is the Sweet Basil fried rice. Service is friendly, quick and competent (unless you get the new guy they hired for weekend... hes a bit bland and scatter brained). This past weekend I recommended Halo Thai to a couple from California and they were equally as satisfied with this place. I suggest HT for quiet dinners alone or in couple, small study groups (overall seating is probably 40 people at full capacity), taking parents, and pretty much anyone you want to impress on a small budget. Halo Thai is the reason I Yelp. Show this place some love... but not too much. I don't want to have to compete for a seat.

Honestly, it boggles the mind with the number of mediocre Thai restaurants in Portland (at least 4 on Alberta, maybe more) that one this terrible can not only remain in business but charge a ridiculous amount ($11) for each and every entree. The first time I ate here the food was so insanely hot that I couldn't taste it, let alone consider the flavor. Possibly my fault, second time I went with mild to be safe. The second time was the last. Ordered the yellow curry (which is huge and sharable) for two people. I specifically ordered it because it claimed to have sweet potato in it. Imagine my dismay as every orange chunk I speared in my dinner turned out to be carrot - and obviously from a large, woody carrot at that. There were however plenty of white potatoes to be had - too bad they were hard and barely cooked at all. Also they had somehow managed to cook the onions in a way that they were tough, which I am not sure I have ever accomplished. But it wasn't spicy at all...in fact it was so bland it didn't have a lick of flavor. I cannot imagine why anyone would bother eating here when Pok Pok is just down 15th street, or one of the interchangeable but decent places just down the street. Convenience was my reason but certainly not any more.

Okay, so this is ridiculous. I've stayed away from this place because of the reviews bit finally stopped it and got the Larb and it was totally FANTASTIC, huge, fresh, beautifully presented and I am going to take every one of my friends here forever.

Since this was the only place that wasn't busy on Alberta during lunch time my coworkers and I decided to give it a try. We also didn't have much time, and looking back I think we should have taken the time to go to my usual Thai Noon down the street. While the people who work here were so nice and sincere..the food was really not great. We ordered the lemon grass chicken, the cashew, and the larb. The cashew came with very little flavor or vegetables and my coworkers really disliked their food as well. I won't be coming back here since there is much better Thai food on Alberta but wish the really sweet owners all the best!

    (2)
  • Sophie C.

First time here. Pleasantly surprised. Really good food - much better than most Thai food in town - and a delightful owner who's Sister is the (excellent) chef. Now on our short-list for many happy return visits. Highly recommend.

  • Leesah T.

Halo Thai is just ok. The service was average, the food (I ordered the Pad Kee Mao) was average, and the drinks (fruit margaritas) were average, so if you're looking for average it might be just what you want. Halo Thai- here is my average, no frills review.

Period.

There are other good Thai places on Alberta, but Halo Thai is always my top choice on where to go.

this is not the best pad thai i've ever had. in fact, it was kinda gross. it was really greasy and salty and too much fish oil or some kind of weird sauce on it. the noodles were overcooked and hung limply about. i couldn't even finish it. i think i ate like five bites then took it home and devoured it later that night in my hotel room after a night of drinking. but i have to give them three stars because of the service, the ambiance and the full bar!

The food was good and we enjoyed the creative mixed drinks- curry and alcohol, who woulda thunk? The host ( I assume he owns the place ) also has a good dry wit. The place wasn't overly packed on a wednesday night. The menu is also fairly accomodating for vegetarians.

It can be quite HOT!

the food is...good. the service? amazing!!!! so i don't know how to rate this place. the tom kah gai soup was really bad. i think thee most awful soup i've had... almost ever. i'm having horrible feelings of guilt because the dude (owner?) was extremely nice and attentive which is rare and i don't want to dislike (hate). so i won't. for en tree's we had the green bean dish and a cashew fried rice. i think they would have been delicious if they hadn't been fire hot. funny, the only other table, also complained..

  • Jen D.
