It's been 3 years since I was last at Foster & Dobbs, and it's changed, and not for the better. It used to be a cheese shop; now it's mostly a sandwich shop and wine bar. The cheese selection is small and very expensive (nothing under $25/lbs), and the staff don't know anything about the cheeses. Service was lacksidasical overall; the woman who was helping us with cheese went on break without saying anything when we went to grab pasta and never came back. We spent 10 minutes waiting for her before it became clear we needed to talk to the other staff member. It might be a better place if you're there for the sandwiches, or for drinks on the patio. As a cheese/gourmet shop, though, it's strictly mediocre UPDATE: Just so folks know, Kevin the owner contacted me to get specifics about the service issue I reported here. So he's concerned.

Foster and Dobbs is a real Northeast gem. The hospitable staff offer great suggestions that won't break the bank. Friday wine tastings feature nice varieties of wines and a friendly crowd to boot. Really tasty desserts, sandwiches, salads (the caprese has been excellent on multiple occasions), and soups. There are usually two solid beers on tap as well. The owner is around a lot and is a really nice guy who chats with a lot of customers. The location is beautiful -- the shop is situated in the heart of the historic Irvington neighborhood (not a bad place to go for a stroll after a meal and check out all the beautiful homes). F&D is an awesome place to come hang out with friends on a summer afternoon, or inside on a cooler day. Make sure you come check this place out -- you'll be glad you did!

One of the best kept secrets in Portland. This tucked away sandwich shop offers soooo much more. From amazing wines (at all price ranges) to tasty meats and cheeses you won't be left wanting. (They also have a fine selection of cookies.) The newly added salad selection is a welcome addition to those with gluten-free allergies. I have to say I have never felt so welcome or comfortable in a shop. The staff makes everyone feel at home. Stop by with friends and open a bottle of wine, ask your fine server to surprise you with a selection of meats and cheeses, (followed by some cookies) and relax. Definitely a MUST destination.

I preface this with that I live very close by, so the convenience factor is worth a lot. Such great sandwiches, always something new and delicious. Never had a miss so far, the baguette is perfect with just enough of all of the toppings to make it great. Balanced and delicious. They also have a great selection of cocktail fixers, olives, pantry essentials and wine. So either the key ingredients for a meal at home or a wonderful lunch or snack out.

The Carnegie: Toated rye, pastrami,Gruyere, fallot dijon and pickle-soooo good-perfect place with a glass of wine on any day. Incredible selection of "food accessories", meats, cheese, honey, chocolate, salts, bitters-a great place to let your inner foodie savor the moment and take aways-one of my favorite places on a lazy Saturday

I have celiacs and usually can't eat outside of my own kitchen. I can get incredibly sick from even microscopic cross-contamination from gluten ingredients in commercial kitchens. This makes me sad. Michael at Foster and Dobbs not only knew what celiacs was but went above and beyond to keep me safe and make me feel welcome. This is not always the case for a highly sensitive person trying to eat out. I'm am so appreciative. Go Michael!!!

I come for cheese, I come for water avenue coffee, I come for sandwiches, I come for wine, I come for gifts, I come for fancy chocolate and sweets, I come for cocktail-makings, I come for free samples of all of the above, and I always leave happy. Always. If that's not 5 stars, I'm not sure what is.

Every time I have stopped at this deli to obtain a banh mi sandwich, they are out of the main ingredient, country pork pate. Today was no exception to my past experience so I substituted turkey. The baguette the sandwich was served on was so stale or exposed to air too long that it was hard to bite through. We ended up eating the sandwiches open face just as observed at the next table as they too were struggling biting through the bread. Next time I have a banh mi craving, I'll head to another Foster, and eat at An Xuyen. Words of caution: stay out of the restroom if a filthy toilet does a number to your appetite. I wanted to wash my hands before eating but I wish I had just used a hand sanitizer in my bag.

I live just down the street and sadly, yesterday was my first time! BUT, better late than never! Craving wine and cheese on the first "hot" day this year, I was happy to find that they had a patio that was getting some good sunshine even as late in the day as it was. Score! Picked out an easy sparking wine and ordered the cheese monger plate (how did they know my name and that i was coming?!). The guy manning the counter (don't know his name, but he was rocking a top knot, glasses and a killer personality) was excellent. Knowing what we were going to be drinking, he paired a fabulous assortment of cheese, meat and bread, but only after coming outside to ask us if there were any "no-no" cheeses, and in this case, yes, there is a blue cheese allergy. Well played sir. The items provided were delicious AND after all the bread had been devoured (what? I like carbs...) he so kindly brought us more! A lot more! It's the small things that are most appreciated and the wonderful, detailed and friendly service as well as the awesome assortment of wines and cheeses will keep us coming back again and again!

I recently visited Foster & Dobbs and had purchased some local cheeses. Which were great. As I looked over the menu for the sandwich menu, I ordered the roast beast....which was FRIGGIN HUGE!!! It was good and I decided to have a beer with my meal, which was perfect for the weather. Little did I know that the person who helped me was the owner, Kevin. Great place and good food. Love the atmosphere that allows for a low key laid back environment that hits close to home. Go go go - to F&D!

Great place to get some yummy things. Great coffee and I went in to get some wine and noticed all the other local things. Great granola, chocolates and lots more. The location is pretty sweet and easy to just stop by. I can always find parking which is great esp in Portland. Perfect place to walk to as well. Lots of gorgeous homes in the area.

What a fantastic neighborhood watering hole! (Jesus turned water into wine so calling it a watering hole isn't that far of a stretch). It's a wine shop slash restaurant slash tasting room. Tonight, 6 of us came down for their free Friday night tasting. After 5 delicious roses and reds, we ordered snacks and more wine. The shop has modern class and a huge array of deli meats, cheeses, wines and specialty snack items (donuts, cookies, candies, nuts etc). Oddly, seeing all those lovely gourmet cheeses, we got on the subject of the Last Supper. Not the biblical one; a hypothetical last meal. As in death row. Yeah, only I would steer the conversation there, but I seriously would pick some of their meats, cheeses and a bottle of their wine for my last meal. My happiness comes down to family, friends and then a really good sharp cheese and a buttery, oakey, spicy red wine. The latter 2 items can be found here at Foster & Dobbs.

Stopped in here to get a quick lunch before an appointment. Albacore salad on spinach leaves was insanely good. An excellent portion for $8, not too crazy given that this place is on the pricier side. But it's a lovely spot to sit, relax, sip, slurp, chomp, and browse. You can tell the owner has done a lot of work to carry excellent, local when possible products. The deli/charcuterie case is excellent, the space is open, light, beautiful. New fave.

Thank you for your reply. I would have really welcomed that info as I had cut away three large areas and now to realize that I hadn't needed to do that is a bummer.

As much as I love this place it has gone severely downhill since it was sold. It's the new staff that is going to hurt this business. The people making sandwiches are too busy talking to each other, or friends that stop by, to actually help customers. Literally STOPPED in the middle of making an order to talk. Learn to talk and work dude. Seriously. Timely fashion apparently is a lost concept. I come in here once a week and it's the same story. Every. Time. I am not greeted when I walk in, like I used to be. Today was probably my last visit here. It's a sad day...

Great local neighborhood wine and specialty shop. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Wide variety if specialty meats, cheeses, jams, sandwiches, wines and local items. Great Friday wine tastings!

Foster & Dobbs is simply a great neighborhood meeting place. Friday night wine tastings, to everyday great coffee and sandwiches, (I love the Spicy Italian) the quality is fantastic! Best of all is how friendly and educated they are in putting together an appetizer plate of cheeses, meats and wines. I know what I like, but couldn't tell you which cheese is which or what pairs with what. They always listen to what I am looking for and set me up with a tasty assortment. Friendly staff and cool atmosphere. I highly recommend!

Nice little gourmet deli. Great bean salad with greens and caramelized fennel. Not inexpensive. Good for sandwiches and picnic fixings. Great selection of cheeses and salamis and fresh breads from Pearl Bakery. We enjoyed eating there!

Love this place. Expensive, but if you focus on just a few key items that you'll use, it's worth it. if you blow your cash on an $8 chocolate bar, notsomuch. I had a pretty tasty salami sandwich but will say they could do better on the bread - it was fairly dried up, but the innards were deee-licious. One note - I've rarely bought from them because when I walk in the door, no one says anything to you even though they're usually just standing there, sometimes even just talking to one another. The girl behind the counter was friendly once I approached her, and I was thanked by another as I left. but it would be nice to come in and get that greeting so you know they appreciate your coming in.

This is exactly the type of neighborhood establishment you want to have down the street. Walking in, I can't help but smile at the baguettes stacked in the corner, the counter full of cheeses and meats, and the walls lined with wine. I love strolling over here for a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the afternoon. And their sandwiches are very good. So... it's perfect?

In Short: An excellent selection of wines, cured meats, cheeses, and specialty foods, delicious lunch options, and now, espresso drinks! It can't be beat. Foster & Dobbs is a neighborhood market that specializes in wine, cheese, and cured meats. They also carry lots of specialty items like drinking vinegars, bitters, fine chocolate, craft beers, and other nifty treats. They're not a place to go grocery shop for the week, but if you want to supply a phenomenal cocktail party, they're your go-to store. As if that weren't enough, under new owner (and all-around great guy) Kevin, Foster & Dobbs is incorporating new changes, the largest of which is a full-service espresso bar that went live just recently. The lattes are delicious, and the new hours (open at 7 AM) mean that Irvington locals have no excuse to go to Peet's/Starbucks/D'arte when a neighborhood-owned coffee shop is ready to serve you. I have read some reviews here which indicate people have received snobby or indifferent service. I can only say, I'm at Foster & Dobbs at least 3 days a week, and never once has anyone been snobbish or unkind. If you have questions about cheese or the meats, the staff will happily cut you a sample and explain the nuances. Alex, the wine guru, is a fan of wines, and his enthusiasm for wine is only topped by his willingness to help you find something on the shelf that you will like, no matter the budget. At least once a week, I'll segue from coffee into lunch, which is always tasty and promptly prepared. I favor the tuna salad with a cup of soup, sometimes accompanied by slices of prosciutto, coppa, or speck. They also have toasty sandwiches, and my daughter loves the melted cheese one. Bottom Line: Great products, friendly service, and now, Portland's black lifeblood - coffee. What's not to love? Go on in and say hi. I may be there too.

I found this place by googling "luxury groceries" and I found what I was looking for! Kevin has an amazing variety of cheese, wines, sauces, gourmet sandwiches, beers, etc etc. Our family had yummy sandwiches for lunch - kids had grilled cheese on ciabatta for $5 and my husband and I had prosciutto and salami sandwiches for ~$8 each. Kevin then helped me assemble absolutely gorgeous gift baskets for our hosts with lots of dedication and care. Excellent place!

Perfect neighborhood place to grab a bit and relax. They have seats indoors and out and the hubby and I shared a delicious sandwich and a cheese plate. The cheeses were all very good- we asked for lots of flavor and sharper cheeses and we got it! The sandwich and side salad was also quite tasty- I really liked their dressing! It was also enough food for a late lunch for both of us we almost didn't finish the cheese plate, but then...well it's cheese, come on! The best part of it all was actually the service, the man and woman working inside were very helpful with questions and just generally very sweet and also quick!

great cheese selection and they put together awesome cheese and meat boards if you want to try out the selection while enjoying a glass of wine there, or you can stock up on wines and cheeses to take home! a great place for a sandwich at lunch and I can never help myself from indulging in their 'wall of chocolate' selections and leaving with a tasty treat. good place to get unique and thoughtful gifts during the holidays or for birthdays, too!

  • Rachel N.

First time here. I got the charcuterie plate. It came with two kinds of salami, a beautiful prosciutto, massive green olives in olive oil, crusty bread, spicy mustard and a peppery green salad. I ordered a side of funky sharp sheep milk cheese to go with it. The service is great, and they have a fridge full of Double Mountain and Laurelwood beer. On top of all that goodness, they're playing alternative 80's music (Cure, Clash, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and New Order), which is one of my absolute favorite genres of music. I'm sad that it took me so long to come here, but ecstatic that I finally have. Customer for life.

I'd give this place four stars if I was rating the decor or the quality of their product offerings, and yet, it's a last-resort option for me forever after. I'm a native European, former chef, but resist labeling myself a foodie. I buy quality ingredients for the simple dishes I like to prepare, but never again from F&D. The uppity attitude I encountered and their predatory pricing just doesn't work for me. $8.25 for a pound of noodles!?! Really? Bye.

What made me write this review was the incredible meat and cheese tray Foster & Dobbs put together for me for an event. I hosted a baby shower over the weekend, and wanted something fantastic for my guests to nibble on - wow did they deliver! The presentation was beautiful, the meats and cheeses were excellent, and they even remembered to ask whether I wanted to provide only pasteurized cheese for the expectant mother. Lastly, I felt like the price was more than reasonable. We are absolutely sold, and can't wait to order another tray from them!

My wife and I love this place. It is close to our house, the staff is friendly, the sandwiches are great. They also have a vegan soup prepared daily at Blossoming Lotus, which is a nice treat on a cold afternoon. I was reading the reviews and noticed someone saying the staff was rude. Honestly, I have eaten here over a dozen times and that could not be further from the truth.

  • Joseph H.

Oh Dobby! How I wish you were my gentle house elf. Alas, but nay, you are kind of uppity as you know your preparations are top notch. The stiff hipsters who run F&D keep things overtly mellow. Usually that's nice, but it all comes off as a bit of a high end Cost Plus Wine and Cheese section. That's not to say the selection of cheese, meat/charcuterie, and wine aren't divine. They are, especially treats like Gabbietou, a rich Pyrinnes soft cheese I have yet to find elsewhere. They have some sandwiches and relish to go along with standard cheese plates. It's all really good and if you live in the neighborhood it's a go to spot for take home salami and cheese. Other little things stand out like Sahagun local chocolates, Fentimen's Curiosity Cola (i love it!), and other shelf bound items like Mama Lil's peppers in jars and imported red pasta sauce from New Orleans. Pretentiousness has a price and in this case it's a lonely star on another would be 5 review. It's all a little uppity. And for ordering in house, there's better rates on meats and cheeses of this quality throughout the city. As this neighborhood goes, this is the tops. If only the place had a little more relaxed vibe, like the other Dobby the elf I know.

F&D is very close to my house and I'm truly ashamed that I've lived here 8 years and JUST found them. I must have blinked each of the hundreds of times we've driven by here. No blinking anymore! Great experience, great selection, definitely going to be a regular here. We were helped by a very nice woman who made some great recommendations and was very patient with my 2 rambunctious kids. They have a small but unique selection of cured meats by a few local companies and by Salumi (the carnivore's mecca). They carry Salumi's lamb prosciutto (which is almost worth the pilgrimage to Seattle) so we stocked up. The cheese selection was awesome, with lots of sheep and goat options. In addition to beer and wine, they also have a variety of finishing salts, which is a great touch. I love that you can ask them to register your cheese selections so you can consult the list if you've forgotten what you tried the last time. This would be a great place to pop by as you're going on a picnic or to pick up a hostess gift. For anyone coming to a party at my house, please stop here first.

I went to Foster and Dobbs for the first time today and, though I expected a lot of goodness, I was very much surprised and impressed by how wonderful it really was. Considering it specializes in wine, higher-end cheese, cured meats, chocolate and sweets, etc...it sounds a bit like a recipe for snobby service and less-than-friendly patrons. This was certainly not the case - everyone was approachable, casual and warm; there was an easy, neighborhoody feeling to the place and the people. I had a class of wine and sandwich, then took home a bit of salami. The place reminds me of a European cafe - reasonable portion sizes of super-tasty food while being left alone (in a good way) while you're eating. I brought a book and enjoyed a leisurely lunch. I look forward to going back.

Small, specific, petite, well curated offerings of salami, cheese and beer/wine would be a good descriptor for Foster and Dobbs. Unfortunately I would also add expensive and upper end as well for this cheese shop in Northeast. I picked up a few cheeses and cured meats here for a picnic the other day and was pleasantly surprised with diversity of producers but also a little put off by the selection offered. There really were no introductory priced cheese or salamis to compliment the superb show stoppers. I found nothing under 20 dollars a pound in the cheese category which is unforgivable with so many choices available from all over the world elsewhere in Portland. I settled on trying a smoked gouda and fontina from Willamette Valley Cheese Co. to go with an aged sheeps milk from Berkswell. All were delicious but it would have been nice to have another reasonably priced soft cheese to compliment them. The best discovery by far was in the salamis though, with the Mole from Salumi in Seattle head and shoulders above new flavor wise everything else. This combination of chocolate, cinnamon and chipotle flavors was amazingly rich and full bodied. Overall I spent way more at Foster and Dobbs than I would have liked but was pleased with the results.

My boyfriend is a sandwich fiend. There is nothing he loves more in life than a well-crafted sandwich. He has a top five list of all the best sandwiches he's had in his life, from all over the country, and I have been trying to crack into that list the entire five-odd years we've lived together. A week ago, it was his birthday. He never asks for a specific present, so I told him I was going to make him the ultimate sandwich. On a Wednesday afternoon, I stopped into Foster & Dobbs for a "sandwich consultation" (nothing official, I just liked to call it that). The man behind the counter was totally game to help me assemble something and we started going through options after I gave him the starting point of rye bread. For about twenty minutes, he helped me sample cheeses, discussed my boyfriend's preferred meats and cheeses, and collected condiments to compliment the guts. His recommendations were spot on and I felt confident that he really knew his stuff and was paying attention to my specifications. He was a really nice guy, I couldn't thank him enough for helping me out! The sandwich? Rye bread, lettuce, tomato, full grain mustard... Then the ingredients I snagged at Foster & Dobbs: Turkey breast, pork shoulder, a chevre, and orange chili mustard. Did I mention they have a neat little selection of beers? I grabbed a brown ale and stout based on recommendation, as well. While getting a pound of salami would put you out twenty bucks or so, a half pound was a ton of freakin' meat. I wouldn't put the prices above most of Trader Joe's selection. Guess who's the current #1 sandwich maker on the list?

A little slice of the SF Ferry Building in good ole' Portland! I am pleased to say that walking into Foster and Dobbs you are instantly ok to have the most refined (read snobby) pallet and desire only the finest from your food as well as your experience. With a varied selection of the products that give foodies their name, awesome community classes and a lovely eat-in menu Foster and Dobbs fulfills a niche that I have not yet discovered in Portland. Thank you to the owners for being brave and bold to bring the people what they want, whether they know it or not. I am so glad that this place exists!

I am sad to say that this is the last straw. I have gone out of my way to go to this little back alley place for the last time. Every time I come away with a bad taste in my mouth. There are many places that equal and surpass their selection of treats, wines and cheeses. Why go to a place is always unwelcoming and unfriendly. I will not give my $$ to grumpy people. Whole Foods has a cheese counter. Even Fred's has a cheese counter. Drive 10 minutes more and go to the real cheese store in town - Steve's. There is no reason to go to this place, when there are places that are happy to see you. grrrr for the record I have taken a few classes, bought wine and cheese and chocolate and bread and sandwiches there in the past...no more.

I'd noticed that Foster and Dobbs had a food menu for awhile now, but never really partook of it until today, when we ordered sandwiches from here for lunch. You can order via phone, and they will have your food ready for pick up in a few minutes. The menu selections include cheese and charcuterie plates with accompaniments such as olives, dried fruit and nuts, mustards, etc., sandwiches, soup and salad and what they call "pause plates." These small plates of "tasty nibbles" are available from 4PM to closing each day, to enhance a glass of wine. The sandwich offerings are all very unique, and we were very happy with our choices today. I got the Finnochiona Salami (fennel and black pepper) sandwich with fresh chevre, red onion con-fit and greens. DH ordered the Mole Salami (chili and chocolate), with cheddar, Roma tomatoes, chili jam and greens. Our sandwiches were served on fresh baguettes (Foster and Dobbs starts serving lunch after the daily fresh bread delivery). We were very pleased with the uniqueness, taste and quality of our sandwiches. Prices were fair. Not cheap, at $7.50 per sandwich. We'll be returning here to sample the other delicious-sounding sandwiches sometime soon.

Oh man. Yes. Yes. Sandwich: get the Salami Mole. Has some sort of chile paste on there... freakin amazing. Bread's a little hard but still. Crazy good. Have to try it. Also- biggest selection of cheese I've seen in quite a while. Had some of the Old Kentucky soft goat cheese this past weekend. Man oh man. This is one of those high-end, great cheese and charcuterie places. I loved it. If you want a big beefy sandwich, then dont come. If you want amazing prosciutto or salami, booya.

This place deserves another visit from me on Yelp. My return trip was just what I had hoped for. Suggestions a plenty, and all fruitful, rendering me one happy lady with several lovely cheeses to enjoy. Other bonus points for now featuring olympic provisions sausages and pearl bakery breads, these are each my favorites in their respective categories, and I'm just the sort of person who would otherwise drive all over the city to put all of these things together on my plate- here the work is done for me! Prices are not low-low bargain basement, but I suppose they can't really be, these aren't low-low bargain items, so I happily upgrade them to a 5!

We came here to meet our potential baby sitter (actually, a responsible grown up...my kids are not 'babies')...anyway, she's French, loves cheese, and it was a hot day. Why WOULDN'T we come here?! We ordered a salumi plate & received 4 types of artisanal goodies along with mustard, dressed salad greens, olives, and bread. Everything was incredibly tasty, especially the mole salami. This is a taste sensation I can see myself craving in the future...worth a try, and while you're at it, think about filing this away for future sandwiches. We also ordered a cheese plate & got free reign on our choice of cheeses...we opted for 1 cows' milk, 1 sheep's' milk, and 1 goats' milk. All 3 were delicious. This platter came with dried fruit, fresh fruit, Marcona almonds, & olives OR you could get a savory version with olives, greens, etc. We got the savory version & there were ooh's & ahh's all 'round. Along with this tastiness, we bought a bottle of chilled rose, which was exactly right for the food & the weather. All this was joyously consumed at a big wooden communal table, surrounded by all manner of comestibles such as chocolates, condiments, pastas...so many things to taste. I could go on & on, but suffice to say, we closed the deal & the French babysitter is ours! Thanks Foster & Dobbs!!

OK, this place was a-riot with foodie greatness. F&D is a magnificent cheese and wine shop, with a simple but perfectly-formed menu of sandwiches, soup, salad, etc. There was only one person behind the counter, and he handled everything my extroverted friends and I threw at him with grace, efficiency, and style. I can't come up with an effective description-- everything is delicious and screams "Eat me, I'm top-quality!" Check the shelves, too: there are some really unusual condiments. Oh yeah, sample the olive bar!

Foster and Dobbs could turn even the uninitiated palate into a complete foodie and all without being pretentious. This little gem of a cheese shop has all the right food stuffs to impress your most snotty of friends but you'll actually ENJOY the experience of shopping here. Staff is friendly and approachable, happy to take out any number of cheeses from the case and let you sample them. They track your purchases so when you return after you've run out of that stinky cheese you bought last time, they can identify said stinky cheese and hook you up. They have classes as well, tastings and in the summer, little plates with wine and nibbles for a very decent price. Not only for cheeseheads, they have wine, olives, chocolates, meats, pastas and much more. If your only cheese knowledge to date comes from Wallace and Gromit, please get to Foster and Dobbs ASAP. The Wensleydale will be waiting for you.

I love this place. Always friendly service and food is great! Love the sandwiches and charcuterie platter. They bring extra bread at no charge if you ask. Soups are somewhat of a disappointment each time but I don't mind.

I love this place. I have always been greeted with such friendliness when I go in here and they are always more then willing to help me when I descirbe what I am looking for or what I want. They always come up with 3-4 samples for me to try and if none of those are it, they make sure they find me what I am looking for. There cheeses are so yummy, there bread selection could be a bit wider but who am I to complain, on most occasions when I go in there I go in there for the cheese and cheese only :)
