I'll be honest, I only came here because I bought a groupon to this place. But, given the menu online, I was super excited to give it a try. I remember clearly that I went here on a rainy Saturday evening. The place was extremely hard to find as it is on a side street behind a patio garden. Not the easiest place to find during a rain storm, but I can see it being super cute in the summer time with their outdoor lights. Inside was surprisingly small. Yet, it was warm and inviting. However, I'm sad to report that their food was not on par with how nice the place was. I ordered a savory crepe dish and my dinner partner ordered risotto. Both were on the subpar side and neither of us could finish our meals nor did we want to take it as left overs. In fact, I barely touched my dinner. Disappointing as a nice delicious meal would have gone great with the rain. Thanks for ruining that moment, equinox.

My spouse and I have had very good luck here and consider this one of our favorite date night or date morning restaurants. The food is always very flavorful and ingredients artfully put together with an attempt to support local and organic. For breakfast I enjoy their EQ omelette of the day with roasted (not pan-fried) cubed potatoes with a dollop of their slight spicy-sweet homemade ketchup. In the evening, I always enjoy a cup of their very delicious homemade soups. Their spaetzel (German-style pasta) is a favorite dish of mine. Their hamburger is good, but better to enjoy elsewhere as there is a tendency to overcook the meat and over brown the bun for some reason. I enjoy peeking at the chefs while they are hard at work cooking my meal, and I will usually wonder out loud to my spouse how such humble-looking men can create such delicious food with their hands!

Happy Hour: This hidden little gem is well worth a visit or revisit.... I took a group of Meetup people there for Happy Hour and not only was the food great the server did a fantastic job..... Try the polenta fries, yummy.......The malbec was a great wine with a great price.... It'll be on my radar now and I'll head back for Brunch soon....

I really wanted to like Equinox more than just 'meh' but their breakfast didn't quite match up to other Portland institutions. Equinox came well reviewed from a friend who enjoys their happy hour so maybe that's the sweet spot? I ordered the seasonal veggie benedict with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions and some greens with the side of potatoes. The dish seemed a bit small compared to some benedicts I've had and it wasn't very flavorful. One egg was a little too underdone and the other overdone. The hollandaise was really bland, along with the veggies, and the english muffin was toasted to a cracker. The potatoes were pretty good, they reminded me of Eastburns', crispy but fluffy insides and well salted. I'm glad I had a Groupon cause $10 for kinda lame veggie bendict would have been frustrating. With all the great options in PDX I'd have to skip this one.

The food is expertly prepared, interesting, and delicious. The Caesar salad was the most unique and tasty I've ever had. My friend's pork tenderloin over polenta was amazingly tender and moist. I had the fettuccine bolognese which melted in my mouth. Really a great restaurant. And the music was delightful!

Been here for dinner and just had their brunch. It was delicious! Sampled several things and have to say I may have fallen in love with their smoked salmon hash. The place is a little hidden off the main drag on Mississippi but it only adds to the allure. Stop in and see for yourself, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Brunch has better options for vegetarians than dinner. For brunch we ordered the pillow and the veggie benedict. Both were quite good. Satisfied with our brunch experience we decided to buy a Groupon for the dinner option. We should have checked the menu! We sadly had about 2 dinner options: veggie burger and crepes. I'm sure we could have ordered the gnocchi with no bacon or a few of the sides. We did however enjoy the mushroom bites and equinox salad.

I love this place! More for brunch type food than anything. I want to order something other than the Roxy sandwich but lets just say it's perfection and I look at other things on the menu but when it's as good as it gets it's super hard to not order it. The house made ketchup is sooo delish and it's hard to not use all of the container that they give you on your table. Its like adding fresh tomatoes to everything on your plate. I crave this place...advice go and you won't be disappointed.

The original plan was to go to The Big Egg, but the beautiful weather caused them to be really busy. The gf and I decided to give Equinox a try since they didn't have a wait even though their patio was nice. I got the "Mississippi" which is French toast, bacon, and potatoes. Not the best French toast I've had sadly. It wasn't bad though. It was kind of weird how they stacked the French toast on top of the bacon and potatoes. It did make for a good picture, I admit.

The service was wonderful but the food was not that great. We've been here 3 or 4 times and have been fairly happy. I had the chicken pot pie, the chicken resembled rubber, the topping was so thick and hard it was like a stale biscuit. Big thumbs down for $16.

  • Shonna B.

The food was absolutely delicious! There's plenty of patio seating. Kind of off Mississippi so you miss all the traffic. Staff was attentive and friendly. Really laid back atmosphere. I did not like the actual seats, I have super meaty thighs and the chairs squeezed. The prices were a too high for the food that we were given. We went for dinner on a Friday night.

We sat outside for drinks and dinner on a beautiful day, and the food was great. The martinis are good, and there's quite a variety of them. I split the burger and squash salad with my friend, delish. It's a little spendy for dinner, but we got the groupon (which is still going on) making it very reasonable. They also allow dogs on their outside patio. Try to go on a nice day so you can sit on the patio! I've heard they have good brunch, so I will be back.

Staff is great at greeting you at the door and making you feel welcome. Our server was Toby. The menu is well constructed, the cocktails are classic with a twist. The atmosphere feels secret-garden-ish. The food comes out quick and the plating is very rustic-chic. The flavors are developed and sophisticated. I've tried about %50 of the menu now. I've been in when it's slow and when it's busy. It feels consistent here. Thanks Equinox, you are the turning point for my Mississippi dining experience.

Maybe it was because our visit marked a significant event in our new found coupledom. Maybe it was because the weather outside was dry and only a little gray on this June evening. Maybe it was because we didn't have to wait at all for a table. But I'm guessing it was really about the food and the service that is earning Equinox the 5 stars I believe it deserves. Knowing that this is where we were going for our date, I decided to check out the menu beforehand so I knew what to get. I took one glance at the pork tenderloin among it's Spanish chorizo and verde sauce partners in crime and knew that was the dish I would order. The problem when the decision to order was that he, too, wanted that dish--and normally we would find a second dish to split the two, but not tonight. You see Boyd was working and according to our very helpful, attentive, and funny server, you wanted the pork tenderloin when Boyd was cooking. So we both ordered it and the conversation came to a screeching halt as soon as it touched our tongues. Why? Because it was better than described. The portion was large. The verde soooo good and it came with the perfect amount of chorizo, potatoes, and kale. Paired with a brew and this date was off to an excellent start. If I ever have a hankering for pork in the future (besides bacon, which as any bacon lover knows gets its own food group) I will come back for this dish. I'm afraid that none of the other menu items will get the love because how could I turn my back on something that started a perfect night out on such an excellent note? I can't. It's love.

Despite having a reservation there was a 15 to 20 min wait. The pork loin with confit potatoes was nothing to rave about. It was "just okay" dinner. Even the buttered rum was just okay. If you need a qualifier for "just okay" - I would have requested a refund of my $12 from groupon rather drive 20 min for "just okay"

This restaurant (and crew) have it totally going on! We dine out a lot and enjoy food that's done well, but 'home cooked' and Equinox does an excellent job of it. From delicious breakfast (on the summer's morning - on the patio) to an intimate dinner inside in the fall...I love all seasons at Equinox. Their seasonal menu includes such wonderment as the Peppered Bacon Benedict to a delicious seasonal pot pie. Everything I have had...right down to the EQ burger has been succulent, flavorful and fantastic. Their crew is delightful, fun, friendly and efficient as well. Overall experience has been truly delightful every time we have attended.

My boyfriend and I tried this because of a Groupon deal. We were happy we did. The restaurant is tucked away and has a laid back atmosphere. There are several things on the menu that sounded awesome and I ended up trying the roast chicken. It was delicious! To top it off, their dirty martini on the menu is one of the best I've had. Will be going back.

Good people, good meals - sometimes it is difficult to find this combination in restaurants that use local foods & try to make interesting dishes but Equinox made it happen. We look forward to going back to enjoy dinner & drinks on the patio when the sun comes back.

I went here for breakfast with a friend this last weekend. Tucked in a little off Mississippi, Equinox is a very cute restaurant as it is small but won't get you feeling claustrophobic. The food was very good and creative, but I would have liked to have a bit more veggies and a bit less cream sauce on the Breakfast Pillow I ordered. My friend ordered the Equinox Bowl which she really liked (and so did I, I had a bite). The service was good and our waitress was friendly, I would love to come back for a different meal sometime. Now for my main complaint: I'm a coffee person. One of the big things that I love about going out for breakfast is that I have a million cups of coffee and I spend the rest of the day jittery from the amount of caffeine in my system. The coffee at Equinox was really really bad, so when you go, get something else to drink.

Fancifully mediocre. I've had brunch, dinner and happy hour at Equinox and it's fine. It's a pleasant atmosphere, food is good, it looks nice, it's just not great. I guess for the price, I want a little more wow.

This place has entered the rotation. Primarily because of its spectacular outdoor seating area and delicious cocktails. The food was good but not great. I like that their seasonal and the menu continues to change but I was hoping for a little more mouth-watering excitement when it came to my meal. My husband ordered a burger, cooked medium, which turned out to be more on the rare side. The bun was dry and the meat was bland but came with good quality bacon and cheese (an add-on for $). I had a lamb shoulder on polenta served with asparagus. Sounds fabulous, right? It was just OK. Flavor of the lamb was a bit boring and it was tepid but still enjoyable. Probably because I have a weak spot for polenta. I'll eat polenta-anything and be happy. I'd like to try this place again, perhaps for brunch. Will update when that day comes.

I got the breakfast pillow and it was very yummy. The hot chocolate could ve been better. It's good for vegetarians who eat eggs. The roared potatoes were good too. Expect a short wait time on Sundays and food takes a little longer than usual but the food is totally worth it.

We decided to try Equinox after wandering through Mississippi St. and checking out the menu offerings at the other restaurants. Because we got there right when they opened for dinner at 5pm, we didn't have to wait, despite it being a Saturday night. The atmosphere was very warm, yet open, and there was plenty of outdoor seating with heating lamps. For our appetizer we ordered the prosciutto wrapped shrimp, which was delicious, but I love anything with good prosciutto so I'm biased. My boyfriend ordered the Fettuccine Arrabbiata. The pasta was a little too heavy on the sauce, but the seafood was varied and delicious. I ordered the Penne Rigate. The sauce was very good, although there were a few too many capers. Overall we had a nice experience with a friendly waitress, prompt service, and good food.

We've eaten dinner here a number of times, and I must say that I am totally addicted to the smoked salmon risotto. It's pretty much all I've ever ordered here, although I do like to be adventurous by adding in different salads and appetizers. The salads and appetizers are delicious. We have tried almost everything they have offer, and they have all been wonderful, with the grilled Caesar salad being one of my favorites. My husband has tried a variety of entrees and has enjoyed them all...the chicken and pork entrees being his favorites. Equinox usually always has a couple of vegetarian options, a beef entree or two, a seafood entree, as well as a chicken or pork one. The menu is seasonal, but somehow, I've only ever eaten here when the salmon risotto was available. Now that it is Summer, I see that they have a risotto with Spring peas, pecorino and mint that sounds delicious. Holy crap...also on the current menu, the chickpea crepes stuffed with asparagus, goat cheese and basil sound unbelievable. I may have to send my hubby to Equinox for a takeout order (if they do takeout) since I was just put on bedrest until I have my baby in a couple of weeks. I really feel that you can't go wrong here. We have never ordered anything that we did not enjoy. My only gripe is that portions tend to be conservative, and when food is this yummy, you just want more!

Equinox has been consistently pleasurable, enough so that it is the restaurant that I've regularly driven the furthest to most often. It is nice enough, though casual enough that I'm equally comfortable going for an 'event' type dinner, or just a weeknight when we feel like treating ourselves. We've never been disappointed with a visit here. The pork loin I had on my most recent visit may have been the highlight of my experiences here.

Took the fam there last Sunday morning. Sun was shining, the patio had a decent crowd for 9am, too. The service was very attentive to us and our 2 little ones, which makes our lives easier. I had the smoked salmon hash and my wife had the Roxie (egg sandwich) and an order of pancakes for the toddler. I should have licked that plate clean, the hash was that good. My son's pancakes were delish and the egg sandwich met a similar fate at the hash. Delightful, sunny, wonderful service and excellent food!

I was glad it wasn't crowded as I can see why friends have told me: food good. Service not so good. Luckily, service was good for us! There were only 2 servers who were also bartenders... We tried many drinks on the drink menu and came away with the cucumber number being the best of all. The food was great, everyone enjoyed. I had a salad (it really needed more stuff in the giant pile of weeds) and the mussels- they were excellent! This will be a wonderful place in the summer, great outdoor space and facing North. I will be back...

We had an absolutely lovely time at Equinox. We went on a Friday evening, warm and breezy, perfect for patio dining. There were three in our party, and finding a great patio to have dinner was our key concern. When we arrived, we were told that it would be a 30-45 minute wait for outdoor seating, but that we were welcome to sit at the bar until a table opened up. This is longer than I'm usually willing to wait, but we decided to just go with the flow and stay. We ordered some drinks (two lemon drops for my companions and a brown ale for myself), sat down at the bar, and just chatted. Much to our pleasant surprise, a table was available in only 10 minutes. The hostess told us that she never likes to underestimate the wait time... better to overestimate and then the customers are always happily surprised. Our server was extremely friendly, courteous, and prompt. Our food arrived in blazingly-quick time - probably less than ten minutes from when we placed our order, which was impressive considering that the place was humming with activity. Our meals were divine. I got the Aztec enchiladas with guajillo mole and chipotle pork, which were savory and exactly spicy enough, filled with cheese, caramelized onions and spinach, that inspired a contented moan from me with each bite. My partner had the black linguine with Tandoori shrimp in a coconut cream sauce... also just scrumptious. We had started off with the wild mushroom won tons, a small serving (only 6) but just perfect for a couple of morsels to get the taste buds fired up before the meal arrived. Equinox is just about my perfect combination: beautiful setting with great outdoor seating, prompt and friendly service, excellent high quality food, and reasonable prices. The pre-tip total for our meals and drinks was only $74 for three people, which I thought was totally fair. I highly recommend Equinox.

I tried Equinox recently for brunch after hearing good things about it. The service was really efficient and nice, almost too much so! No, it was really nice. The dishes really try to spice things up with little additions to basic dishes, like eggs benedict, they had a different version for hollandaise sauce than the usual. I had this puffed breakfast pastry with a really yummy sauce and eggs and veggies. Good stuff. They're only open for breakfast/brunch on Saturday and Sunday, so don't try going there on a weekday or you'll be disappointed!

I hate to give a 1 star for such a great looking and nice place but after 4 days my health is returning. I had the grilled cezar with spanish white anchovies. In not exactly sure what makes a anchovie white and spanish, but thought it was a good idea. Come Sunday morning I nearly ended up in the emergency room. Its now 4 days later and Im just feeling normal. I have never had such strange food issues in my life. I will probably avoid this dish if i ever eat here again. Life is too short to pass so close to death over a salad. Im upping it to two stars for the great service. Just be carefull what you order. If it sounds strange, it might treat you strange. -Brant

Went here for Easter brunch. Good eggs Benedict. They make their own chorizo, which is also quite tasty. They could use a heat lamp for their food staging though. If you come with a large group (6 or more) be prepared to have a few if your party's dishes be lukewarm as they have sat while the others were finished.

Came here on a warm Tuesday night for dinner and easily scored a table al fresco. The courtyard is nicely landscaped to make a cozy space. String lights around the perimeter added to the atmosphere. If you too want to eat outside, learn from my mistake, and bring insect repellent. Mosquitos add to the atmosphere in small, medium, and large. Some people moved inside to get away from them. Others waived napkins. As the number of eaters dwindled I found myself being dive bombed by lots of mosquitos, as did the diners in the table next to me. Now about the food. The portions are kind of large for the salad and entrees. GOOD: I got a Summer Squash Salad ($8) that was heavenly. The flavors were all fresh in thinly sliced summer squash, with toasted almonds, cheese and mint. Each bite a different component would take the lead and it was tasty and good. I washed it down with a glass of delicious red wine, from Spain I think, that was one of their two summer picks. WEAK: Next I had Risotto with spring peas, mint and pecorino. It was mostly lemony and hella salty. Thankfully the tasty salad was large, and I ate only enough risotto to finish my glass of wine. I got the half order of risotto ($8) and even if it was good, it was big and I would be hard pressed to finish the half serving. The risotto also seemed runny and not very creamy. The cheese was the best part, and I scraped it off the top before I gave up on the dish. WEAK: Creamy Chocolate Mousse topped with whipped cream, caramel, nuts (served in a wine glass). Sounds good, huh? How do you mess that up? How about you coat nuts with caramel and bury it in the mousse. The whipped cream, chocolate mousse and fudgy bottom layer were tasty, unfortunately you have to maneuver around mysterious and overly sweet chunks bumming out the mousse. The creamy mouth feel is lost when you have big and small chunks to chew and swallow. I tried to eat around chunks and got full by the time I hit the fudgy layer. I would have preferred the nuts and caramel on top. This mousse would have been a winner without flotsam and jetsam. It was also supposed to come with candied orange peel but I asked them to omit it. Maybe I just chose incorrectly for some dishes or they were having an off night. I will be back.

I have been here 3 times. The first was for brunch, and it was fine. The second was for dinner and one of us got a great dish and the other was OK. The third time, I went was also for dinner. We were seated right away at 7:00pm and left at 9:00 pm without being served. We had to go to the airport and ended up having to get the food in to- go bags. It was really disappointing. Especially since no one told us how slow it was going to be. I know they didn't just forget about us because everyone was was waiting for their food for a long time! This place has good food but there are also more dependable places around that are just as good or better.

I went there for brunch on Sunday with a recent Groupon they ran and I thought it was great! The waiter was cute and SUPER nice, smiley and helpful (I always appreciate the smiling). My boyfriend go the salmon hash and it was wonderful! I got the Eggs Benedict and also thought it was delightful. The taters were super clean and non-greasy. My hot chocolate left something to be desired, but who cares?! I say YAY!

once again, i was intrigued by groupon to try a new place (i'm such a sucker for "good deals" where i almost always end up spending more money than i expected, oh well, good intentions). i must say though, it was worth it this time :) dinner started off well with some delicious drinks and their patience with my husband's indecisive beer selection. the mushroom appetizer was a savory wonton-esque delight. i had the seafood linguine, which had a sauce that could probably sky-rocket your blood pressure -- but tasty, nonetheless. and the autumn pot pie my husband had was well worth the wait! i'd like to come back here when it's actually warm out to sit in the cute, private patio area.

We had a decent Happy Hour here. Good prices, lovely patio, and a small selection of edibles. The grilled bread with black olive chevre was acceptable, as were the fried calamari. The stuffed mushrooms were quite good. My risotto was well flavored, but sadly, it was also mushy due to being overcooked. For a drink, I had the Mango Hoopty: tequila, cointreau, and mango puree. It was great.

I have been to Equinox before and it was great. Went there Saturday night around 7 and it was dead. Seemed strange as it was a nice day in pdx for a change. The drinks are good, but very small. I had pork tenderloin which was very dry. The side of potato and sausage hash was the best part. Fellow diners enjoyed their meals of roast chicken, and black pasta with shrimp. Chocolate torte was dry but the accompanying bourbon ice cream was outstanding. Good but not outstanding. 3 1/2 stars.

I stopped in by accident but I will definitely be back. We were looking for a Sunday brunch spot but everywhere we went was packed. Luckily we found this gem! We were seated immediately and greeted at our table within minutes. The breakfast was delicious as was the burger! The only downside was the lack of lunch options other than the burger. But I will take a place that makes a few things well rather than an extensive menu with everything being mediocre.

I had the house ravioli and, as a pasta lover, really, really didn't like it. It was lobster ravioli and the ravioli was seriously undercooked (although the inside filling was good). The waiter said that the chef is working on perfecting their ravioli -- seems to me that they should perfect it before adding it to their menu and charging $20 for it. But my husband had their burger and we both loved it. Super tasty.

  • B-ton and Dr. J P.

On the longest day of the year, it was really nice to be outside on their awesome patio for dinner. Drinks were good with a nice selection, Dr J had a tasty mojito or two and B-ton had a nice brew or two. The mojito was extra tasty considering the mint came straight from the patio garden right next to our table. We ordered the prosciutto wrapped shrimp as a starter and they were everything you would expect. Shrimpy goodness wrapped in a Members Only jacket of prosciutto! The mains were not to the same level as the appetizer, but were fine. Dr. J had the beet & bleu salad and B-ton had a burger. Don't get us wrong, they both were good, but nothing more than would be expected at a joint like this. The main downside to Equinox, as many have said before, is their service can be a bit slow. As long as you know this going in, no problem at all, but if you're looking for a quick bite, Equinox is definitely not the place to go.

I have yet to experience a bad meal at Equinox. Dinner and brunch have been amazing and it's so nice to be have such a reliable restaurant in Portland. My most recent meal was brunch on a beautiful, sunny Sunday. They opened up the industrial door that separates the inside and the nice courtyard. Perfect! "Wish I Had Jesse's Bowl" won't disappoint you. Get it! My friend's dish "The Dude" looked really good -- they indicated it was a very popular option. I've been here for some great dinners, too! The menu changes with the season (hence the name Equinox) and they always have amazing dishes. I love this place!

Wow the food was way slow....it took an hour to get our food. The waitstaff was fine but the kitchen needs help. The salads and apps are very small. Their asparagus side was only 5 pieces of asparagus for $5. The overall food was fine.....definitely not worth an hour wait.

We were craving burgers so we decided to give Equinox a try. The atmosphere was cozy, our waitress was great, and our food was completely overcooked. We requested our burgers medium rare and they came out without a bit of pink. The burgers were also very thin. The fries had been fried almost beyond recognition and were mostly inedible. If you want a good burger on MIssissippi, skip Equinox and hit Lovely Hula Hands instead.

We had ridden by this place a million times on are bikes, and decided that we needed to stop in and give it a try. Last night was our seventh anniversary so we dropped into Equinox without reservations the place wasn't too busy, the service was great, and the food was really delicious. I loved the mushroom bites, and herbed potatoes, and the whipped parsnips were fantastic. The hamburger was super good but the bacon may have been a little overcooked. I will come back!

Went here on 11/5/11 for dinner and enjoyed our dining experience. We had read about the slow service but we didn't experience it. Our reservations were for 7pm and we arrived at 6:50pm and we were done with our meal by 7:40pm! Waitress was very attentive and chef accommodating to special dietary needs. I had the beets and bleu salad and while it wasn't what I was expecting, I really liked it and would order it again. I also had the duck confit sliders for my main entree and thought it was tasty. My husband had the pan fried trout and it was delicious and moist. The restaurant has an industrial but yet cozy feel to it. I liked the vibe.

I came with a friend for her birthday treat and we ordered the calamari appetizer, which I don't recommend. It was very bland and not special at all. But my meal was very good. However right after the meal I got kind of sick! But I don't think it was the restaurant since I was sick immediately after eating and usually I think it takes a while and nothing tasted off or funny. I recommended this place to my little brother to take a date and he said he really liked it too. The only suggestion I have for this place is they could go with making the seating area a bit nicer. Maybe some votive candles or other decor to pretty it up because it was kind of boring decor.

Though it may not be a Portland brunch institution, Equinox is rapidly climbing up my "Awesome Brunch" love ladder. Savory and sweet concoctions keep your taste buds begging for more, and your wallet happy to dish out. The outdoor patio is perfect during the warmer days, and being tucked just around the corner from Mississippi maintains a quieter, more intimate ambiance. I haven't dined here for dinner (yet), but the brunch menu is enough to keep me a happy patron. Looking for suggestions? I strongly recommend the breakfast sandwiches and the breakfast pillow--all are winning dishes.

Awesome menu, and very lovely (decently sized) outdoor area; plus the wait is likely shorter than Gravy. Unfortunately the table service is spotty - I was the very first party to arrive this morning, but fourth seated, after several people with toddlers self-importanted their way to tables. I could easily abide this, save that we didn't have food on the in front of us until six other tables were well into eating. Forgot the bacon on my sando, my girlfriend's eggs were cold. Wish you could have done us right.

Disappointed, that's how I feel. I've been to Equinox before, but only for cocktails, but tonight I finally dropped in for dinner. Let me just say that the environment is inviting, warm and cozy. The patio is super quaint. The food was sub-par at best. I went with the Cascade Angus Sirloin (medium rare) over cheese potatoes, with green peppercorn-cabernet demi for $18. I ordered a steak, how bad can that be? Instead of a traditional slab, I got three thinly sliced pieces of beef and a scoop of potatoes on a slice of bread. Overcooked, bland, and tasteless. It was so bad that I didn't find it necessary to send back - there's little hope for saving this dish. It's really too bad that I have to give Equinox 2 stars. I really in my heart want to give it more for effort, but the steak ruined it for me.

We had a late dinner here the other night and it was yummy. We had the mushroom wontons...great. Shrimp wrapped with bacon which was perfectly cooked. And then risotto as a main course. It was a really satisfying dinner.

Have been here for happy hour and liked the vibe. Tried dinner and was quite disappointed. After reading other reviews, sounds like this may be more for brunch. Decor is stark but still cool, service was friendly and fast the night we were there: Recent Thurs night, 7:30pm, place was almost empty. Not a good sign. Started with a shimp bisque. May be my fault for not asking for a description up front but the hearty pureed tomato soup we got was not expected. My husband liked the tomato soup but I missed getting a shrimp bisque and actually dislike tomato soup in general. Entrees were trout and the chickpea crepe. Both were on the cool side, and should not have been served that way. Trout was very uneven and small, Crepe needed to be warmer so the cheese on top melted. We still may have given them a pass if they'd cost $10-12. But both were much more. Bottom line, way overpriced at dinner for what you get. Too many other good restaurant choices.

This place used to be really excellent and it is sad to see it decline so quickly. It is now a merely mediocre place with inconsistent food. My last meal there was pretty terrible but I'll continue to go back until I'm certain it's just not a bad night or 2 or 3....that's how much i used to love this place.

Went here on a Tuesday night with friends before a show at Mississippi Studios, around the corner. It was a nice evening and we sat in the patio. The atmosphere was awesome. Service was pretty slow - we were not in a hurry, so it wasn't a problem. The cocktails totally rocked we especially liked the PPI and the Garden of Eden. Dinner was good - not outstanding, but solid.

Went here twice because of a Groupon. Once for dinner and once for brunch. Food for dinner was fresh but ok. Not flavorful enough. Had the gnocchi it was ok. For brunch I had Portobello Benedict, it was ok. I'd prefer Helser's or Bumblekiss I probably wouldn't come here again food is ok for the price.

I came here for happy hour with my family who had just flown into PDX since it was in my neighborhood! The service and food were awesome! Our waiter had suggestions for each of our drink preferences and was super attentive. The HH menu was great! We tried the cheeseburgers (great size and taste), crispy mushroom bites, polenta fries, bruschetta (was on point)! Would recommend to anyone wanting a smaller venue with great food and service! We also tried the chicken and pork loin plates both very unique and flavorful!

Had the Chicken Pot Pie for dinner, and like another reviewer, the dish had mediocre chicken and bland sauce to the filling. The worst part was the weird top crust which was hard, thick, and tasteless, more like a stale biscuit than a tender and flaky crust one would expect. Service was friendly and professional. Beautiful ambiance for outdoor dining.

I came here with a group of friends for Saturday Brunch after we saw the crazy line at Gravy. The good: Brunch Menu is solid, with a good vegetarian selection Good Coffee Good Service, and food was out very quickly Easy to get seated for a larger party on a Saturday morning The not great: The homefries were horrible. Mine were cold, chewy, and my guess is that they were frozen at one point My eggs were also kind of cold. Tasty, but getting cold One piece of toast! Who eats just one piece of toast?!

The food at dinner is great, particularly the spaetzle. Priced well -in the teens. 3 stars because: Service was slow on two visits, as well as at the bar. Both times, it appeared they were short staffed, and the bar was totally backed up - just one person making drinks for tables and bar stools. We also waited 30 minutes past our dinner reservation time last night before they could seat us. If they fix the service equation, this will be a better experience and a solid value.

I bought a groupon for breakfast thinking it would be a fun new place to try. We went on a Sunday morning at 9:00 and were seated promptly. Service was fine for us but I did note we were served before others who had been seated and ordered before us. I ordered the waffle with bacon butter. It lacked flavor and was doughy. The syrup served on the side was cold. My significant other ordered The Equinox Bowl. It was okay but quite a small portion. Coffee was good.

Equinox seems to have nailed the right mix of excellent food, drink and atmosphere. They are awfully good at sneaking up on me with their seemingly innocent drinks. Mango Mimosa? It was only okay, but hello morning buzz! Maybe it was the decadent sip of my bf's special mocha with Stumptown espresso, Ghiradelli chocolate and coconut milk. Just in time for all the shops to open on Mississippi... The next time they tempted me with their great beer list, but hooked me with that fab Corpse Reviver 2 made with Gin, Lillet blanc, Cointreau and Absinthe. Down the hatch it went and off I tottered to another night of Mississippi debauchery. Their patio is absolutely darling-straight out of The Secret Garden, but I have enjoyed sitting at the bar as well. I prefer their brunch menu the most so far as it is so darn affordable and fun. I can't wait to try more. I'll unabashedly drool all over their breakfast pillow, a puff pastry stuffed with mushrooms, peppers and onions and covered with poached eggs with big bursting yokes. I had it with their perfectly crisp and seasoned potatoes. The salmon hash is killer. We also like the wantons stuffed with mushrooms and blue cheese. I'm a fan and I bet their neighbors are too since they must benefit from all the happy (and slightly buzzed) customers they send back into the area.

Great Service. Great Breakfast. Relaxing Atmosphere. Did I mention breakfast? I've been here 4 times during brunch and am impressed every time. The portions are just right and the quality is there. Looking for a great breakfast? Equinox is a must if you are in the area.

Our party of four was seated in a private room near the kitchen. That little room has so much potential! More artwork would go a long way toward making it feel like a cozy and intimate dining space. The food was generally good. The standout plate at our table was the strip steak.

This is one of a Portland summer gem to have when it is hot and all you need is good food and a superb patio. Take advantage of their specials. We had the bruschetta with crab and it was good. One serving is good to fill you up as it is huge. So big, they cut the baguette into two. And they don't skimp on their toppings. You can taste the sweetness of the sea in the crab meat. We also tried different fares such as the Beet salad- beets and bacon go hand in hand. Who knew! The calamari and polenta fries were ok. The polenta fries' sauce almost taste like it has a hint of curry. I find it tolerable as I'm not a huge fan. Another favorite was their Risotto dish. It is creamy and filling. They did not skimp on their mushrooms. They have amazing array of drinks. I had the PPI. It is spicy and fruity. I love passion fruit based drinks. I would say that their menu is simple. There is always elegance and a sense of homeyness in simplicity. They would most likely attract more customers had they have a bigger patio. The ambiance inside needs some color splash. Out server Gabriel is sweet and efficient. Never a dull moment and pushy. I wish most servers in Portland are like him.

Here's the deal, made reservations got there and every one seemed clueless BUT we were seated promptly and ate and it was great. Second time, made reservations show up, again all the wait staff seem clueless and there wasn't a host/hostess in sight! Finally someone came over and I told them we had a reservation .. well he walked away without saying anything and the worst part was the owner was even worst!!!! We waited over 20 minutes and when I spoke with her she was unapologetic and extremely rude. She even said something along the lines of "oh well". I've worked in customer service based jobs all my life and I've had to deal with some crappy owners, employees, and even patrons but this horrible woman tops the cake of worst person ever! My sister and her fiancee were with us and they've told everyone they know to never eat here either. She was a complete hag and I will never giver her or her establishment my business again.

Who knew that our last-minute brunch fallback would be so delicious? Some of the best gluten-free toast ever, perfect pancakes and really tasty egg dishes. The Back to Bed (2 eggs on puff pasty and potatoes with peppered bacon and arugula) in particular was a kick-ass start to the day.

Came here on a recommendation from an out-of-town friend. The outdoor space is really nice for brunch, but beyond that... The food here is mediocre diner quality with small portions. Granted, the prices are pretty low, but it's 15% less for 30% less food. Maybe I have an inflated sense of value with Gravy being nearby, but I wasn't satisfied with the quantity of chorizo scramble. The plate itself was overall lackluster. The salad was just light dressed greens, no other veggies. The toast was borderline too tough to eat. The scramble was just a quarter of the plate and the chorizo just tasted like ground meat with some seasoning. My boyfriend enjoyed his biscuits and gravy, so that's all right, I guess. The service was fine, as well. Still, I'd rather not recommend this place, not with so many other good options around.

My husband, two-year-old and I went to brunch this morning. The food was good and the service was good. Nothing blew me away as extra special but I would go again if we lived near there, which we don't. My husband had the corned beef hash which he said was excellent.

I came here on a whim and was pretty excited when I was seated instantly on a Saturday night, and it was really cute inside! It was cold and rainy and I was definitely craving some hot chocolate. I was delighted when the server said they do have it, and I even asked to be sure it wasn't that powdered crap. Presentation was great, it looked homemade and with fresh whipped cream. But unfortunately it lacked any flavor and was totally meh. Then the food arrived, and it was nothing special. Smaller portion than what I expected but not like that mattered because it wasn't really crazy good anyway. I really wasn't blown away by the menu and offerings, and given the first meal, I don't really care to come back. Portland has too good of food to settle for mediocre places!

Great brunch spot! Walked right in, on Easter Sunday, and was seated without a wait! That's pretty much unheard of for a brunch spot in Portland. Meanwhile, folks were standing in line for an hour or so at Gravy. In my opinion, the food here is great! Partner had the chilaquilles, and I had the classic eggs benedict. The chilaquilles were excellent with two or three crispy fried corn tortillas, black beans, salsa, cotija cheese, and more. Great flavors. The eggs bene was delish and they cure the Canadian bacon in-house. Hollandaise sauce was fabulous, and very classic. Service was friendly, fast, and professional. By all means, though, the masses can definitely just stay at Gravy, Jam, Mother's, etc... because I liked getting my meal without an hour wait on the sidewalk!

I can only comment on the breakfast (aka brunch) since I and my partner went here this a.m. for the first time. Not sure how we missed it before (except that there are a million options in this town), but glad we decided to check it out. We're always on the lookout for uncommon approaches to the first meal of the day, and Equinox delivered. I had a Boise scramble, which had shallots, portobello mushrooms, and goat cheese. The topping was a fantastic house-made pesto (per the server). Extremely delicious. I also ordered a side pancake, which was superior. It's so easy to default to those thick, tasteless pancakes a lot of places serve; I'm glad the cooks here spent some time figuring out how to ramp it up. I'd never had (or even heard of) "bacon butter" before, but it was a nice addition. We substituted fruit for potatoes with no hassle. My partner had what is apparently a signature dish, the Equinox Bowl, which layers potatoes, pepper bacon, sausage and some other stuff topped with a cheese sauce. Also scrumptious. Service was attentive without being hovering. Server Tuvia was professional but also personable and funny. The prices were standard for breakfast,, and on some items a bit lower than expected (a basic breakfast is $6.50). A charming ambiance, wonderful food, and an overall excellent experience put Equinox on our go-to list for breakfast in Portland.

My Spouse and I went for Valentine's Dinner. We'd heard great things and was thrilled to get a seat for what was a 3 or 4 course meal. We had 4 or more options for each course but it was a divergence on their normal menu. No biggie, I understand sometimes restaurants need to streamline and serve great food. This was my hope at least. the first course, calemare and a lobster bisque. meh.. cool and chewy Calamari, the breading was ok and the cook decent but I didn't finish it due to the cool clamminess of it all in the end. The lobster bisque was more like bumped up tomato soup.. meh. 2nd course.. Salads!! Yes we have a hit here. Mine was with a baked acorn squash under a bed of lovely greens and sweet bits.. the perfect mix. Spouse had a blue cheese, nut, and green salad.. again.. a hit a perfect balance of texture and flavor on fresh veggies, hard to mess this up. 3rd course.. Dinner.. I had the spaetzle and salmon dish.. it tasted fishy .. I hate half.. top Sirloin(i think.. might have been a different cut) perfectly seasoned before the demi glaze.. the glaze pushed it into over seasoned. meh 4th course deserts.. I had the bread pudding and she had the chocolate tort. Both very good, flavor excellent and balance. My only regret was that the bread pudding didnt have a creame or float to give it something to absorb. It wasn't dry just would have taken the entire dish to the next level. Overall I am definitely not running back for seconds. I might go again in the spring/summer for the outdoor dining but with some many options in Portland, this one just didnt stand out for me. last note.. I thought the price was excellent and the portions more than adequate for a 4 course meal.

I used to love going to this restaurant. The food was great, and although I always had to wait for a table, the service was good once I got a seat. I'm not sure if Equinox is under new management, or what their issue is.. but after my last visit I won't be returning. We arrived at around 830 on a Friday night. The entire place was empty except for two other tables. We ordered the same thing we always do; the beet salad without bacon, polenta fries, a chicken entree for each of us, and two cocktails. The polenta fries arrived as short stubs half their normal size and were so over-cooked that they were like polenta coal. Then the salad came, covered in bacon. Our gimlets tasted like straight margarita mix. Our chicken, at about $17 per plate was horrible. The skin was white, not the brown roasted color it normally is. The mashed potatoes that accompanied the chicken were runny, like boxed potatoes . .....and the actual meat of the chicken was so pink we felt it wasn't totally done. After we sat down, I saw two other sets of people try to come in and be seated - they were told that the restaurant was closing early. The entire time we were there, the wait staff was doing clean up chores, taking out garbage, etc. There was no $80-a-dinner anbiance. The waitress did remove the polenta coal from our bill, and they remade the salad, but everything about this dining experience went wrong. It was so bad that it was my inspiration to start a Yelp account. There are way too many great restaurants in Portland to eat sub-par food like this that now feels very overpriced and used to be one of our favorite spots. Never again.

Food was decent, but not at all impressive, especially considering that they are very overpriced. Bread was hard and dry, meat was bland... Went here due to a Groupon, and I doubt I'll go back.

Equinox has been in this redeveloped Mississippi area since the beginning and has been a nice local staple of the community. However, after years of going to the Mississippi district, I am sorry to say, I had never dined here before and it took a Living Social coupon to get me in. Well let me say, Equinox blew away all my expectations. It's a very open dining experience, but the soft lighting is very romantic and it's quite quiet and intimate for being an open floor plan. The waiter was fantastic (Gabriel) and was helpful, insightful, and just a real pleasure to be around. And as we all know, the wait staff in Portland is usually par at best. Not so here and with Gabriel! The food was simply delicious. My date and I split an appetizer of a trio of bruschetta that was a combo of smoked salmon, kale, and dijon; a bacon chutney with sirachi sauce; and a chorizo mixture. The smoked salmon was amazing and although hot from the sirachi, the bacon chutney was wonderful. For dinner, we both ordered the Spaetzle with smoked salmon with spinach in a light cream sauce served over toasted rustic bread. I've been to a lot of the top restaurants in Portland as they are constantly popping up every week it seems and eat out probably three times a week. I have be honest, this was one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. The mixture of ingredients were perfect and the uniqueness of having in house made spaetzle was fantastic. I guess the spaetzle dish changes seasonally, but if you find the smoke salmon as part of this dish, I highly recommend it. Overall Equinox was a great place that I'm sorry to say took so long to discover. It's not written up in local publications nor will it be on the Travel or Food Network channel. But this is a Portland gem and a great place for great food, great service, and at prices that are very reasonable, especially when compared to other dining establishments that have a big name chef behind it. Please note, they also seem to have a very cute, patio for summer time dining as well.

Service was a bit slow...but that's ok. We weren't in a big rush. Unfortunately, the first thing we noticed when we walked through the outdoor seating and into the indoor seating area was...flies. Lots and lots of flies. That was gross. But we stayed...per the Yelp reviews. The french toast ("Mississippi") was thick, fluffy, and sweet. I really enjoyed it. The bacon that came out with it was alright - I always eat my bacon! But I wished it was a bit crispier. The potatoes were dry and looked old. So sad...I didn't eat any of it :( The chicken sandwich looked amazing but apparently tasted just OK. It's a bit hard to eat but manageable once you get the first bite in :) I think it was a decent lunch overall but I don't know if I want to come back here...

We had heard about this place from friends. So decided to give it a try. Located in a relatively unassuming place. On entrance, the ambience is very typical for NE portland. Laid back yet elegant! We ordered a pork loin and the special pasta for the night - Radiatori Pasta. The pork loin was definitely worth repeating again and the special was the show stopper. Great food, good service. A bit expensive but would surely come back here !!

I was really looking forward to coming here because the menu looked great, a lot of variety and good vegetarian options. I sat outside because it was still morning and the air was nice and we got our coffee and our order was taken pretty quickly. That is when everything began to go wrong. First of all, I have to say I don't have a problem with waiting a little longer for my food if it is good and warrants that additional time. However, there were less than ten tables outside and plenty of waitstaff so I can't understand why it would take over an hour to get my fried egg sandwich and my guests french toast. That seems a bit excessive to me. Add to that the servers, who look like they could use a nice, hot shower, don't come to your table often enough to make sure you're okay and refill your coffee. Although the food is fine, the service is not up to par.

If you want fruit flies in your cocktails and overpriced past due food than this is the place for you! It's full of flies! From the drinks to the food! The service is like a comedy show. I shat liquid for 2 days from the pork loin entree. Tmi I know. But seriously. I also ordered a corpse reviver. It had flies. Was returned. Hey. Guess what? They use flat old smelly white wine instead of lillet Blanc. And that's something that can't be returned. Screw that place

Absolute deliciousness! Started out at Gravy. But after waiting 45 minutes & watching inattentive staff there, we went around the corner to Equinox. And I am so glad! Had fragrant fresh coffee, and the Boise scramble. The server didn't evwn bat an eye when i asked to sub hollandaise (the best ive had in eons) for the pesto. Great bacon side too. I would have given 5 stars, but the scramble should have had portabellas & came with buttons. Had i been warned i would have been fine. Jut a little fine tuning for the kitchen:) We will absolutely be back!

A group of friends and I went here for a Sunday brunch. They do take reservations which is nice if you have kids. There were quite a few little ones running around there. The atmosphere isn't anything grand. Our waitress was nice and personable. I did enjoy my food. Everyone at my table liked their food. I wouldn't rave about this place because the atmosphere is so-so but I don't have any real complaints either. If you are going just for the food, then go, it's good.

Let me start by saying the food was really good. With that, I also have to say I ordered very poorly. We went for breakfast and I ordered the Portobello benedict. I did not read it in it's entirety and when I got it I realized it was served with a balsamic glaze over the eggs. It was by far the best savory benedict I have ever had, it was also the first, but it was not a breakfast food. I ate it, but was wishing I had gotten more traditional hollandaise sauce. My husband got the smoked Salmon hash and it was incredible. It had a great hollandaise sauce over it. I think all hashes need some kind of sauce and this one was perfect. Now onto the service. The service was awful and that is putting it mildly. We got there before any rush of people showed up. They sat us immediately and yet it took them at least 10 minutes to offer us anything to drink. By the time they showed up we wouldn't let them leave until we had them take our whole order. We also had to go the bar to get our coffee filled as they were not bringing it out. I hope that was a fluke, because we would like to go back in the summer and sit outside.

One of the best patios in Portland!! Service wasn't that great the night we went, but it was late and I think the waitress was tired. She was really nice. Burger was so-so, but salad was amazing and fresh!!

Definitely on the pricey side but both the breakfast and dinner is good. We had the spaetzle and the red snapper. The root vegetables that come with the snapper are sauted in a lemon dill sauce and they are delicious. The spaetzle is rich and creamy and definitely a good comfort food. For breakfast we had the french toast (Zander's Craving) and the eggs and potatoes (Shaver). The french toast is very sweet as it is creme brulee french toast with fruit. The breakfast potatoes are very good. The place was empty for breakfast but was crowded at dinner time. The service wasn't that great during dinner and the food took a very long time.

Late Saturday morning breakfast, outdoor seating, a few mimosas (with lots of juicy flavors to choose from), great food and solid service....what more exactly do you need??? Wife ordered the pepper bacon eggs benedict and I got the Chilique (sorry, I knew I wasn't going to remember the name of this dish correctly).....we ate, we swapped, and we both enjoyed the hell out of breakfast!!! Mixed in with breakfast were mango, pomegrante, peach, and passion fruit mimosas......ripe tasty, I do say!!! Our server Lauren was sweet and on the ball all morning..... Just an awesome way to start a weekend day!!!!

Whatever they're doing to their coffee seems like it should be illegal. In a good way. I stopped in here for brunch one weekend with a friend and was super pleased with the fact that we got seated right away on a Saturday morning, which is hard to come by in the area. The service was also top notch. Our waiter obliged my request about which item was better when I couldn't decide between two on the menu, without the obnoxious "well which one sounds better?" answer. We both decided to try the specialty mocha, whos name I can't remember. It was delicious and housed not only chocolate and coconut, but probably crack because it gave me such a caffeine jolt that I was jittery the whole rest of the day. I'm both excited and scared to try it again. My friend is boring about breakfast and ordered the Shaver, which is basically two eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. It was really good, especially with the house-made ketchup, but alas not hard to screw up. I opted for the Smoked Salmon Hash, which was superb. Two poached eggs over hash with bell peppers, red onion and hollandaise and a nice smaller portion than most hashes that didn't leave me with a food coma on my hands for the rest of the day. I'll be back here again to try dinner soon. The outdoor patio area looks gorgeous and thankfully contains heat lamps for chillier nights.

Yes...we are fans. My wife and I were here last night and we had a very good, enjoyable experience. Enjoyed the setting, ambiance, as well as the restaurant was clean. Gabriel was our server and he definitely took care of us (was attentive, checked on food, etc). The entrée came out soon after we finished our 'app'. Oh yeah, parking can be a "pain in the" given how close it is to Mississippi Ave but we lucked out, got a spot right in front of the restaurant. Not much more to add except that we'll be back!

I love Equinox for brunch! Luckily, I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to get a table. In the Summer, their patio is bar none to anything else I've found in Portland. The food is as good as gets if you're like me and typically order a scramble - I'm a bit of a creature of habit, so I don't think I've had anything else since the first time I went to Equinox with my roommate a few years ago. Lastly, their bloody marys are perfect!

We had a lovely dinner out in the courtyard the other evening. I like it there..... I had the spaetzle ....it was delicious! I've never had a bad meal there...great brunch! One would think this restaurant was going to feel pretentious, but I don't find it that way at all. Good value....I've taken girl friends, elderly Mom, out of town friends who might feel misfit, but all enjoyed it...

After my last review, the owner was kind enough to contact me. I went back unbeknownst to her to check out the service. The food was still very good... in fact, their house balsamic dressing is amazing. The service was somewhat better and I would have given four stars but when 9:30 rolled around, the staff turned up all the lights and started stacking chairs. It was clear they wanted everyone to leave although there were still occupied tables. It's really too bad because this would be a great go to place for dinner but a big part of the experience is how you are treated, not just the food. Maybe they should get a bit more training because it really is good food.

I'm probably going to echo what others have said. My wife and I have both worked in restaurants, so we're sympathetic. But we also know that it's not that hard to serve decent food. Equinox is one of the few restaurants that would take a reservation for Sunday brunch (7pp at 10am), which made us happy. The menu looked good on-line. They sat us soon after we arrived, but they did that thing where they squish too many people around a couple tables. We kind of expected it, but we noticed a large table in the back room, where four people we sat AFTER us. I don't know why we didn't get that table. It was really crowded when our food came on large round plates. Like others have said, we waited too long for our drinks (couple chais, couple coffees, no mixed drinks). Once our drinks came, we sat for too long until our order was taken. It seemed like there was enough staff. At least 5 in the front of the house, so the delays seemed unnecessary. The portions are smaller. I don't mind this. Many restaurants make up for mediocre food by giving you a lot of it. Too much food either means you're stuffed, or have to throw food away. Unfortunately, the quality of the food wasn't great. My wife's dish, with balsamic creme and blue cheese, looked unappetizingly gray. My omelette looked fine, but didn't excite me, flavor-wise. After we finished eating, more waiting. We sat with empty plates for a long time. When I was a server, we'd pull empty plates as soon as possible. Who wants to sit with a dirty plate? Eventually, we stacked a bunch of empty plates in front of me. It still took them a while to pick them up. So, if you need to make a reservation for a large party on a Sunday, this is probably one of your only options. If you have time, go somewhere else and wait. If you don't have time, expect the food and service to be mediocre.

This place was the 1 exception to the "all Portland food is not good but great" rule. I'm pretty sure we ended up here on an "off night". There's just no other explanation of how they manage to stay in business on Mississippi ave. The first choice which i think was the ruby red trout - was out, and the alternate item (which i think was ravioli, or gnocchi) was small, boring and overpriced I understand that a place might have an off night but throw in some slow service and all you have left is 2 stars.

I've had 3 excellent experiences here, and one terrible one so I'm not sure what to rate this as - I'll give it a 3! First experience we had a lovely dinner on the outdoor patio (GREAT outdoor patio!) in the summer time and everyone's food - from the trout to the seafood pasta was excellent. Next up was brunch and that was excellent too! Their breakfast sandwich is delish. After that I came with some girlfriends for the burger - the burger is good for sure (not sure it's the best burger out there) - but the truffle fries made everything OK! Most recent experience I came here and received a salmon special that tasted well, just wrong. I politely requested an alternative and was given angry eyes from the chef in the kitchen the whole time (yikes!) - the second dish that came out was still pretty mediocre (trout - which is odd because I've previously tasted this and it was delicious!) - so I'm all confused about this place. Overall I think the food is good but not great, and i think the brunch menu beats the dinner menu for sure. If you're looking for a great place to eat outside in the summer though, this would be a safe bet!

Went here For Valentine's day dinner and was really impressed with the efficiency of the staff, quality of food, and general relaxed atmosphere. We had the three course dinner. Each coarse was appropriately sized so you weren't rolling yourself out of the restaurant at the end of the meal. I think my favorite dish was the arugula salad with crispy pancetta, goat cheese, and acorn squash. Really spot on. I could not have alcohol, so they made a great lemonade with rose water substitute that was so enjoyable and really thoughtful. The service was always present, but not hovering, and very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. The only criticism I would give was the dessert. I had the apple crisp and while the apples were cooked so that they were still a little firm, which I like, the skin was left on. It just makes for an unpleasant mouth feel and detracts from the other lovely aspects of the dish. I would come back here for a cocktail, dinner, and to try another dessert. Very impressed with the professionalism and dining experience overall.

I used a groupon to visit Equinox and sat at the bar area. It's a small restaurant, and apparently very popular. There was a nice courtyard sitting area outside under the lights, and with fence to protect from street views. The restaurant itself is hidden inside that fence with the entrance in the courtyard. Like - attention to detail was impressive. For example, there were yellow tulips cut and set on each table, even at the bar ... in February! Food was actually quite tasty - for example, in sliders they would use pickled red onions, rather than simple onions. These things show that they really care and pay attention. Dislike - not much ... only tip is to make a plan ahead as they get full, and they take reservations.

First time at this place with in laws and my daughter. Waiter was awesome, very knowledgeable. Also very friendly with my daughter and really knew what they had to offer. Drinks came a little late, but no biggie. I ordered the corned beef and hash. Absolutely to die for. They really mailed the hollandaise sauce and corned beef was a bit dry but excellent!

I have been here twice. Once it was entirely unremarkable, bland-ish food and generally uninterested experience. It wasn't really worth coming back for. Several years later a friend who lived nearby suggested we go here to avoid a brunch wait anywhere else. It seemed like a good idea at the time. We were seated quickly, at a bar-type area near some windows, but not _at_ the bar. It took about 20 minutes for our server to arrive and ask us if we wanted anything to drink. Two people ordered drinks. Our drinks arrived in another 20 minutes. We ordered food. An HOUR passed. During that time, other people signed in, were seated, ordered, served, and left. At about the 20 minute mark our server came by to assure us our food was coming. Then she spent the majority of the rest of her time standing in front of the kitchen joking and flirting with the cooks. At the bar was someone who I assumed was the assistant manager. She stood at the bar with a rag in her hand making small circles on one spot while gazing into the distance the whole time. She spoke to no one and did nothing else. Our food arrived with the check, which we paid in cash so we wouldn't have to wait any further upon finishing our meal. No explanation, no apology. As we left, the person at the bar wandered outside for a cigarette. We will never ever go there again.

I am always impressed with the service and attention to detail here. On our most recent visit there were five of us. I heard only one complaint from the entire meal that was that there was too much sauce on my sister in laws ravioli of the day. In fact there was, it was more like having ravioli soup! She said the flavors were amazing, but the dish just needed a little less sauce. My pulled pork was amazingly flavored and my only complaint, if you can call it that, was that it was just too much food! In a previous visit the server did a fantastic job accommodating dietary needs, checking in with the chef to ensure we received what she was promising.

Love this place. Very cute and intimate. Attentive and kind staff. Great for breakfast and dinner. Only complaint was they were out of corn beef hash when I went for brunch, but the benedict I had instead was amazing. Possibly best hollandaise sauce I've ever had, had a slight tanginess to it that I've never tasted before. We've been here three times and highly recommend as well as plan on coming back soon

Such good food! The best patio in town! Amazing cocktails! Always something new and tasty! All natural meats and local veg! I tend to go for the same perfect meal at the same place over and over - this place is one of the few that has me ordering all over the menu as everything is so good. Its my 'go to' for fancy dates or business dinners or just craving something awesome with the kids in tow. Portland is delightfully crammed with new hip places but their long waits and indifferent service leave me wishing I'd just gone back to Equinox over and over.

My husband and I went here for dinner last night. The menu looked promising. We ended up ordering the beet salad with blue cheese, chick pea crepes, and lamb stew. Beet salad: Sadly, the best thing about the dish was the piece of pepper bacon on top. My hubby wondered aloud how he could cook bacon to such a lovely crisp. The beets should have been the star of the dish, but they were hiding under the greens. I love beets and these beets had no taste. Chick pea crepes: The crepes were stuffed with roasted squash, goat cheese, and pesto. The dominant flavor was the goat cheese. These crepes were bland and need salt or something other spice to add flavor. It came topped with a white sauce that also didn't add much flavor. Lamb stew: This was hands down the best dish that we ate. The stew was hearty and comforting. It had great flavor and the lamb meat was tender. I would come back just to eat this dish. No problems with service and the restaurant had a nice ambiance.

The food at the Equinox is absolutely fabulous. We had the wild mushroom and the green bean items for appetizers. Main course was the Pork with polenta and my wife had the chicken. Both were top notch! Very very good. For dessert, we had the chocolate torte with caramel sauce. I wish I knew how they made the sauce, it was the beat dessert I have ever had, no kidding.

Solid food, nice (if sometimes slow) service. Lots of good mixtures of textures in the food. Strange bruschetta - basically "food on bread" but often very tasty.

We walked in on a Saturday night at 8:30 and were seated right away - the place was over half empty. This should have been a sign. The water the waitress brought us tasted like bleach. The $8 cocktails were overpriced and unimpressive (if I'm paying that much I expect to have at least a real cherry in my Manhattan, not a smashed, mushy maraschino). The panko crusted eggplant special had absolutely no taste and leaked grease all over the plate - it could have been anything that was fried. The caprese salad that came with it had hardly any dressing and was bitter and the cherry tomatoes looked like they'd seen better days. My husband has the mussels and while his wasn't terrible, it wasn't great either. The wild mushroom bites were the only good part of the meal - they were actually quite good. The caprese appetizer had way too much blue cheese on it was totally overpowering. The service was okay, our waitress acted like she was bored the whole time. $100 later, we're never going back. Don't waste your money at this place, there are MUCH better restaurants around the corner on Mississippi for half the price.

Go here for brunch. It's fresh food and good coffee. I had a delicious egg scramble. Food here is not crazy or a huge carb loaded breakfast. It's good food, reasonable prices, and the portions were perfect for a normal person. The atmosphere was perfect. A relaxing ambiance in a cute little building and a nice little patio area. No line or wait list on a Sunday afternoon. Just a great experience.

Very, very cool. We got a groupon (or living social, something... I don't remember there are so many!) and thought we would give brunch a shot. We didn't realize it was down off Mississippi, we're not well versed in that neighborhood so this was a perfect outing to get us there. The night before was my guy's birthday, so we had been out LATE and drinking. What better to reintroduce us to society than this little place with a HUGE outdoor space. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate so we didn't sit outside. The wait to sit was short, just long enough for the hostess to recognize we were there. Server was there promptly, but for the rest of our meal was VERY slow. VERY. Nice, but heaven forbid we had someplace to be and couldn't spend more than an hour for brunch. That is my ONLY complaint about this place. I had an omelet. It was tasty. Basil and provolone and chicken sausage. The sausage was smokey and super good. They make their own ketchup, it's runny. But flavorful, lots of garlic. Great on my eggs. I ordered grits instead of potatoes... not the best grits I've ever had. White grits, not yellow. And they needed SALT. They were creamy and not mushy, so that was good. My guy had the steak and eggs, he cleaned his plate. Enough said! All in all, they were very accommodating and very pleasant. They have a full bar with yummy sounding drinks. An espresso menu, as well as fresh squeezed OJ. We will definitely be back, sooner than later. Probably with kids in tow, which is a nice find for a decent restaurant in pdx.

We've been to Equinox once for brunch and now once for dinner. Brunch was on their patio, which is very nice. With last night's cold rain, dinner was in their comfortable dining room. Atmosphere is fine - nothing overly fancy. Service was also fine. As others have commented, food isn't super quick in arriving but that's OK with me. Their wine list includes several reasonably priced by-the-glass pours - I chose the Dona Paula Malbec which I often pour at home and know to be consistently good. Ronda had the Gimlet. I'm usually a "keep it simple" guy when it comes to cocktails - this Gimlet was wonderful. Ronda ordered the Autumn Fig salad and a small Risotto. The salad was the major standout of the evening. Arugula with figs, prosciutto, chevre and almonds lightly dressed with a sherry vinaigrette. I can't remember when I've tasted a better salad. Everything worked to perfection - five stars all the way. The Risotto was good but not a standout. I ordered the Flat Iron steak, which came with roasted potatoes, green beans and a mushroom demi glace. The steak came slightly on the medium side of the requested medium rare but quite acceptable. I am a major fan of this cut. Some scientists at the University of Nebraska donned their best CSI gear, plunged into the myriad of muscles that make up the chuck and found one (roughly shaped like an iron) that retains chuck's flavor in a much tenderer package. I thank them every time I devour one of these reasonably priced wonders. This one was peppery (I didn't need the fresh ground additional dusting I requested) and the demi glace complimented rather than overwhelmed the steak flavor. The sides were perfectly cooked. A solid four star dish. This ain't cheap eats, but I felt well served for my buck. I plan to return.

Since my last unpleasant experience here I've returned twice to give them a chance at redemption. Our first trip back was around 5:00 and happy hour was just getting under way. We were one of two tables in the place. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was well prepared and inventive. One thing I'm beginning to notice in restaurants these days is a trend for using mid range ingredients prepared well. IOW, rather than offering a fillet mignon they offer a hanger steak or some other lesser cut. But they prepare it quite nicely. Equinox seems to be in that mold. The result is a menu without out any items that jump out at you. A benefit, for me anyway, is that encourages me to order something I may not otherwise. Our second trip was a prime example. For the first time I can remember I ordered a vegetarian entre! And it was very good. I had a risotto with wild mushrooms and snap peas. Service on our second trip was decent. Friendly if not engaging. We got there just as happy hour was ending this time. Busier than the previous dinner but still not hopping. As things picked up the service got spottier. Our server told us she would bring more coffee but never did. Then our check was delayed because she mistakenly added the table next to us to our bill and had to separate it out. Minor glitches. On this most recent trip we got to dine on their patio which is very nice. Over all I'd say they redeemed themselves from our initial visit. There are a lot of good places to eat in the Mississippi Street area and I can recommend them as a place to try.

This place is so underrated! I've been here several times for dinner and brunch. The food and service are always great. Love the ambiance too. They have a beautiful patio and little curtained off areas for larger groups. The prices are definitely on the low side for Portland, especially considering the quality of the food. Usually a much shorter wait for brunch, too. I recommend the smoked salmon hash for brunch.

The Cucumber Lime Rickey is like drinking a summer day. SO GOOD. The spaetzle and burger are the best, and the salads are great, too. Dinner is great for a date and the quaint two-top tables near bar are private and lovely. The menu is limited to 8 or 9 dishes but they are all fresh and tasty. Ask your server about portions, as some are much smaller than others. There's a great little room for parties of 4-6 that you can reserve for special events, too. Love this place.

My mom's boyfriend took me here for a mom-less brunch (an escape for both of us) when I was visiting my old stomping grounds. The space is great, open and clean and warm, although I'd imagine it gets quite loud when crowded. The servers were all hipstier-than-thou, almost to the point of caricature, but the service was just fine. I had the smoked salmon hash and he had the Equinox bowl. They were both delicious (I stole a bite of the bowl) although the hash is quite rich, with the salmon, potatoes, over-easy eggs and hollandaise. The flavors are great, though, and everything is cooked to perfection. It's simple, homey food and I'd definitely be up for returning when back in town.

***Update- Upgrade to 4 stars from 3*** We went back to use the Groupons, and have since had really nice experiences. Actually haven't had any mediocre service as listed below... in fact, we haven't seen that waiter since... perhaps, that resolved itself. Any how--- service is a good speed now, and the food, is actually really damn good. Get the Basalmic Eggs Benedict... savor it... great slow morning food. --- Original review---- I got a few Groupons for this place 3 breakfast, and 1 dinner. (accidentally pushed the breakfast one a few times). It's in a nice location- easy to find parking, and pretty neighborhood like. The decor is awesome. Very industrial. The waiters and waitresses are all VERY Portland Hipster dressed, and as such, are QUITE laid back. The place was JAM full of 20 somethings. The chai and mocha were lovely, and the Orange French toast was awesome... however- After ordering, it took nearly 35 minutes to get a simple hash for me, and normal eggs and toast for my boyfriend. (Plus the french toast that came out a lot later.) The Hash was pretty good... but no one checked on us for about another 20 minutes after our food arrived. The place emptied out, but still... The table next to us had a group of 40 somethings...We had the same Waiter-- they came in about 10 minutes after us, ordered about 5 minutes before us, got their food about 20 mins before us, and left before we even finished eating... pretty sad. (Especially because he was a jerk who was yelling at his wife about her driving abilities and making his mother (or mother in law) so embarrassed she sat with her head down the entire time). Over all, we'll use our Groupons here... but most likely stay on the West side of town for breakfast... not really worth the 20 minute drive to Northeast for slow service, and food you can really get anywhere on 23rd.

brunch reservations! that's worth at least 4 stars on its own. the servers are attentive and personable, the atmosphere is cozy and perfect for a date or girls night, and the prices are reasonable. the happy hour menu is stellar and the cocktails are top notch. try the spaetzle, it's spezial!

We had a great dinner at Equinox, arriving with our out of town guests right when they opened. We had risotto, crepes, a burger, and pork loin -- all were fantastic. The grilled caesar salad was yummy too. Although they don't have a kids menu, our server didn't hesitate at all to accommodate our kiddo with a small portion of pasta prepared to her liking. We will definitely be back!

  • K B.

Yes, they take reservations, however, not for the patio. With our reservation, we were seated in a dark corner inside the restaurant on a beautiful evening, while walk-ons were seated on the patio. This is their frustrating policy. We have been several times before and have enjoyed meals in the past but this experience was most disappointing and we may not return. Very small portions for the price. The strawberry crisp, typically served at other places in a large bowl, was served in a small coffee cup that spilled over the top when spoon inserted. Service was lackluster. An overall disappointing dining experience.

Three are too few stars for Equinox, four too many. I err on the side of four. I went Saturday morning, Groupon in hand, Yelp informed, and hungry. I was quickly seated and had coffee coming in no time flat. I ordered cheese biscuits which supposedly came with meat gravy and 2 eggs but was told they had changed things so the order now comes with ONE buiscuit and potatoes in place of the second biscuit. I asked her to keep the potatoes, please, and just charge me extra for the second biscuit, add 2 more eggs and a side of bacon. Um, plus a side of real maple syrup. Breakfast arrived with the news that the extra biscuit was added at no charge. Good. My 4 scrambled eggs actually looked like 4 scrambled chicken eggs, not quail eggs, AND they were yummy. Bravo! The meat gravy was ok. No gripe, no praise. My bacon was perfectly done! Yipee! My cheese biscuits had no hint of cheese. None. I don't think those biscuits had ever been in the same room with cheese. I assume there was a mixup. I was too hungry to send them back. Standing alone, the biscuits were ok. Barely. Service was good. Coffee stayed hot and full. I probably should have let them know about the biscuit mixup just for their quality control. My bad. With my $12 groupon (which cost me $6) I owed $4 and tipped $3 plus change.

I bought the recent Groupon for this place and had breakfast there this weekend. Wow! I was very impressed. First of all, contrary to most breakfast places in the Portland area, my boyfriend and I waited a measly 10 minutes for a table. Our usual breakfast wait at any other establishment is around 20-40 minutes. I ordered the pepper bacon benedict and my boyfriend had the orange french toast. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered a mocha as well which was great! The place is well lit by skylights and I'm sure has a romantic feel at night. They have ample outdoor seating which I can imagine is great during the summer. I will definitely be going back to sample more of their breakfast menu and possibly their dinner menu!

Went to Equinox this last weekend for brunch with my brother and his girlfriend. We were a party of four. My first time there. We had to wait for a bit, but this is a "trendy" joint so the wait wasn't unexpected nor too long. When we were seated, our server was pretty good and made sure we were taken care of for drinks. The food was kind of sub-par for the price level. The prices are only a little too high here, but servings are on the small side and some things weren't prepared all that well. Both my wife and I had bacon with our orders. You get two (?) slices of bacon and it is really undercooked. I like juicy bacon and usually don't care for it overdone and hard, but applying a little heat and actually cooking it (instead of just blanching it) would be preferable. Additionally, two slices is just a bit miserly. My wife ordered two fried eggs with her meal and asked for "medium" doneness. On my planet that usually means runny yolks and solid whites. Even the cheapest hash slinging house can always get fried eggs done right, so when my wife's eggs arrived we were surprised to see how completely overdone they were. (Hockey pucks). She also got toast with her order and ended up with one piece of uncooked bread with a couple of grill marks across it. Really? One piece of toast? Kind of cheap. I ordered their pancakes. You get two of them and for $1.25 more you can get real maple syrup. I have to admit their cakes were pretty decent and the real stuff syrup was an added plus. A little too expensive though. We won't likely be coming back. Servers were nice, the place is clean, and the wait wasn't really all that bad. If they could only improve quality and quantity of their food, I think this place would rate much higher. From where I was sitting, I did get to see one of their hamburgers come up to be served. It looked pretty good. As it is, there are too many other good places to eat in Portland to bother with food of this quality. Altogether my wife and I spent $35 for tea, coffee, and breakfast. In any other place that isn't packed with "hipsters" we could get the same breakfast for about $20 total and wind up with better food.

On a whim I bought a Groupon. I had walked past the restaurant, but never really heard much about it... My friend and I showed up for dinner slightly after 5pm on a Tuesday... and we were the only people there. Our server was attentive but not overbearing and gave us time to chat. We ordered a bunch of happy hour things and split them. Duck Confit Sliders, Grilled Broccolini, Chickpea Crepe, the chanterelle pasta, Equinox Salad, and Asiago Truffle Fries. For dessert we had the fruit crisp. For a drink I had the Corpse Reviver #2. Everything was delicious, well balanced, and flavourful. I left feeling full but not overly stuffed. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers on every table. Candles. An open kitchen. I would definitely go again.

Equinox is often a go-to breakfast joint for when I have friends in town. I love that it's tucked right off Mississippi and while the line over at Gravy (bleh!) is jammed outside, you can walk right in to Equinox and get a table and MUCH better food. The Breakfast Pillow is by far my favorite dish there. It's ridiculous. Go ahead and treat yo' self to all those delicious calories and thank me later. Puffed pastry stuffed with roasted veggies and caramelized onions, topped with perfectly poached eggs and the most ridiculous cheese sauce your tongue has had in a long time. There are some other good things on the menu, but I couldn't tell you what they are since I never order them. Just kidding, I do occasionally. Their whipped bacon butter is amazing, and I'm not even a crazy bacon addict. The Smoked Salmon Hash and the Chilaquiles are also on my favorites list. The egg sandwiches are worth mentioning as well. And now we shall talk bloody marys, because, well, why wouldn't we? IT'S BRUNCH. Equinox's Serrano pepper vodka is where it's at, y'all. I like my bloodys spicy, and this does the trick. They also have a horseradish vodka, but that sort of spicy isn't my jam. I've only been to Equinox for dinner twice, but both times were excellent and I was not disappointed. On my last dinner visit my table ordered the gnocchi, the pot pie, and the chicken entree to share. We all loved everything, as was apparent by our clean plates. The chocolate torte and the chocolate cappuccino brulee are well worth the splurge. JUST SAYIN'. The service at Equinox has always been great. If by chance it is busy and you have to wait a few minutes to get a table, the host is always quick to let you know/ask if you want to mingle over to the bar area while you wait. Once seated, drink orders are taken quickly but you may wait a few minutes for them to arrive as they are all freshly made and oh-so-delicious. If you see a Groupon for Equinox and haven't been, nab that shit. It's a great way to try a new place that will for sure lure you back.

My meal had issues, but I will give them three stars for how they responded to the situation, like with most of the meal being free. First of all they were busy, but isn't that a good thing. They had some failings and gave me like the wrong thing. However the bloody mary tasted good, though I left very unsure on the alcohol volume, and I am kind of a light weight at breakfast. However I have been there twice, and it is A-OK, yes 3 stars A-OK, just not stellar, and honestly there are so many options why spend your hard earned skrilla on mistakes, eh?

Cozy, warm, and comfort food style restaurant that was a nice respite on a cold rainy night. Fettuccine mussels and shrimp in smoky tomato sauce to be lopped up by intentionally and strategically burnt bread. Housemade lemonade was nicely sweet & refreshing. Creme brulee looked like a little cup o' mocha. Strawberry rhubarb crisp was tartly fresh and wowsa on that whip cream!

Faced with a 90-minute wait to get a table at Lovely's Fifty-Fifty, my friends and I decided to head elsewhere on Mississippi. We saw the sidewalk sign for Equinox and decided to stop at the bar for a drink. After seeing the menu, we decided to get a table and have dinner there instead. It was definitely a good call. The staff was attentive, courteous, and prompt to our group. There was one (very awesome and well-behaved) child with us and he was provided with blank sheets of paper and a few crayons to keep him occupied while the rest of us chatted and enjoyed drinks. He managed to give most of us a take-away piece of artwork. We shared a few small plates -- the asiago truffle fries were a hit as were the mussels that were ordered by the awesome kid in the group (See? I told you he was awesome). The serving was huge as were the mussels, which were delicious. (And I write that as someone who doesn't usually eat mussels.) The bread was crusty and would be great with a big bowl of soup as well as with the olive spread that accompanied it. For the main course, about half of the dinner party had the chickpea crepes and it was given rave reviews. I had a small serving of the gnocchi, which featured garlic and mushrooms and was very filling. Another friend had the fish & chips and declared it the best she's had in some time. When our dinner plates were taken away and dessert menus placed in front of us, most of us rubbed our stomachs indicating how full we were. I ordered a latte while a few others split a chocolate torte with salted caramel ice cream. I figure it was great because it was gone within a few minutes of hitting the table. We had a couple of latecomers to our group that arrived after 8:30PM when they closed at 9PM, yet they were fine with preparing their plates and allowing them to dine rather than rushing us out the door. So, although Equinox wasn't where we were planning to have dinner on Wednesday night, I'm very happy we made our way there. I will definitely be back.

I love this place! Never a line to get in, yummy mimosas, yummy homemade ketchup on the table and I love their hollandaise sauce!!! And the food is good! Why wait in a line in a portland breakfast joint when you can walk right in and sit down?!

The outdoor patio is a must on a sunny day. Don't forget to bring the dog, they're welcome there. The food is good and the drinks are delicious.

I completely disagree with negative reviews of Equinox. I live in Beaverton and drive out to this area just for this restaurant. The service and food is ALWAYS top notch. I love the Equinox Bowl with poached eggs for breakfast and the Fettuccine Bolognese for dinner. Yum!

GROUPONS BEWARE!!!! I had a Groupon so we decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere and staff were OK. The food was your mediocre Sunday brunch fare. However, when we arrived it took us 5 minutes to be acknowledged and about 25 minutes to get seated despite being the only people waiting. When we were seated we diligently studied the menu, but they were out of our first choice and second choices. Then we tried to order the the soup of the day, but they were out of that too. So we made scrambled, last minute choices. We told the server about the Groupon, and he said he'll deal with it at the end of our meal. So when we tried to use the Groupon, we were told they couldn't honor it because they said it was for dinner only. The fine print mentioned "for weekend brunch til 2:00" or something like that. But they wouldn't honor it because it said "dinner" at the top of the Groupon. They explained that the brunch Groupon is for $12 and the dinner is for $25, so they couldn't honor it because they would lose money, but our bill totaled $20.75, so they would have made out on the difference. But the manager was too thick in the head to see this, or to see that $25 at 2pm and $25 at 7pm is still $25. Before leaving, our server apologized and said that "this has happened a few times before." So I'm thinking, "If this has happened before, why didn't you look at our Groupon when we first told you we had one???" In all honesty, while I was eating before the whole Groupon fiasco occured, I was thinking to myself that the food was alright but I won't likely be coming back. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Brunch on the patio on the first 80' day of the year! Hubby had the Equinox bowl with eggs(scrambled) and proclaimed it delightful-loved the cheese sauce. I had the Black & Blue Omelet (black pepper bacon, blue cheese, caramelized onions & a balsamic-apple créme on top). WOW!!! Seriously? It was soooo good. Every bite of the meal was perfection. Not one crumb or smear of the balsamic sauce was left on my plate. Did I lick it clean...that's between me & our delightful server! Service was also stellar by the way.

I love the atmosphere in this place and when it's nice, you can sit outside. Their patio is pretty big and probably has about a dozen tables. The food here is pretty good, but it's not a great place to go if you're gluten free (there's one vegan option on the menu though). Every time I've gone there's been a bit of a wait, but nothing too crazy. Maybe 20 minutes or so. I've never been disappointed after eating here, but I will say their service is a little slow. I've only been for brunch, and it's really important to me that my coffee stays full! One time our server forgot to bring the coffee for about 10 minutes, then we had to track him down for refills. Not ideal, but like I said, the atmosphere is nice and the food is good so I'll be back. Try the chilaquiles, so good :)

Oh. Oh oh. There is very little in this world that will get me out of bed, dressed, and in a healthy enough emotional state that I am fit to interact with other humans early in the morning...but Equinox does just that. Their food is delicious! Roasted Portobello Benedict? I think so. Interstate omelet? I'll take two. The Roxy sandwich? After one bite, my mother actually said "I'd give a child up for this." I'm an only child, and for a moment I was pissed. Then I took a bite of her sandwich- I'd give me up too. It's THAT good. The decor is light and simple, giving a very cheery air to the place first thing in the morning. The mimosas don't hurt the atmosphere, either. And the waiters are so friendly and helpful! They seem sincerely happy to be at work, which is a rarity these days. The only thing that can eclipse Equinox's brunch menu is what they serve up for dinner. Inventive and fun, and more importantly DELICIOUS. The chick pea crepes are not to be missed- they stopped conversation on three separate occasions as my friend and I would momentarily forget how good they were, then take another bite and be rendered silent all over again by the delicious filling that we absolutely relished down to the last morsel. The gnocchi were fabulous and the bar was very well stocked. My only complaint is that after awhile my plate was empty and the meal was over. I mean, what the hell is THAT about?!

Had an amazing brunch there every time (i think 4 or 5 times now). I would like to say i'm becoming a regular! Love the lighter side of brunch, atmosphere, and exceptionally friendly staff. I have been helped several times by Gabriel, which has always been a joy each time. Excited to spend more time in good company, good food. Cheers.

We came for brunch, waited forever for a table for five. While we waited we chatted with others who were jammed into the teeny tiny waiting area. A lot can be observed while waiting for forty minutes. At one point our name was crossed off the list when a miscommunication between two other waiting tables and hostesses happened. It was noticed eventually but I'm sure it added quite a bit of time to our wait. Eventually they squeezed us into a four top with an extra chair on one side! Two of us were gluten free and were treated relatively well. The server took the time to double check with the kitchen, and that is so appreciated. I don't remember exactly what I ordered, but I do remember a fantastic balsamic creme that I've been attempting to recreate for weeks now. So good. Long wait, but it was damn well near worth it.

I want to be able to give Equinox a better rating than this, but good service and timely meals are important to me and Equinox has neither. I have been there 2x now, and the service is very slow. Today we sat right down, but waited 15 minutes to order. Then drinks (a chai and espresso) took another 15 minutes and had to be sent back because they were cold. Our food took 45 minutes from when we ordered to be set in front of us. To me, that is way to long. The food is excellent, just don't go there if you are in any kind of hurry.

Poor service. Extremely slow food (took about an 1 hour). Food was mediocre at best. Patio was nice on a brisk, sunny morning, but very forgettable. Servers also seemed very disconnected and aloof. One dumped (threw) water out of a glass while he was cleaning a table by the entrance, and it splashed all over my wife's shoes. That same server spilled an entire growler of water on my wife while we were seated because he wasn't paying attention. No offer to comp an appetizer or make any sort of gesture to make it right. Will not return.

I passed by Gravy this morning and found this lovely place. I did not have to wait or listen to screaming children. It is a beautiful place with great service and delicious food. And did I mention that I did not have to wait? I will definitely be back.

Equinox is a great spot where you can go for a nice, relaxing dinner on a weeknight, or a get-a-little-gussied-up romantic date on the weekend. They have a warm spacious inviting atmosphere, and a terrific outdoor patio, complete with nice garden and even propane heaters for those chilly mornings or evenings. I've had breakfast/brunch here once, and don't remember it simply because it was long ago -- so I'll concentrate my review on their dinner menu. The appetizers don't really do much for me. The calamari is okay, but it's just a little too fried for my taste. I must confess that I have a huge crush on the calamari dish from Sel Gris, and that crush is intensified by the fact that Sel Gris is *snif* no longer around, so I can't. have. it. anymore. I will forever hold a candle to that incredible taste sensation, and all other calamari will pale in comparison. The crispy wild musroom bites are also a little heavy on the fried stuff and thinner on the stuffing... but the salad selection (weeds) is a great alternative to the app menu. The Equinox salad is excellent, but the beets and blue is my alltime fave. Great flavor combinations, and perfect compliments to the main dishes. The chick pea crepes were excellent, and I've found their chicken dishes over the years to be solid and delicious. The pot pie (used to be called the "pillow" made with phyllo dough) was good, and my husband has good things to say about the burger and the pork loin. I don't eat dessert here all that often, but the apple crisp was delicious. Beer and wine list are varied and not too limited, mixed drinks have been good. Equinox has a small room off the main dining area, used for larger parties. I've eaten in there once when family was in town -- it looks kinda small when you're looking in from the doorway, but it's really quite nice for a group of around 6-8. The restaurant can accommodate larger parties in the main dining room.

We have a tendency to hit up different neighbourhoods when we visit Portland and one of them was the Mississippi 'hood. Mind you, this used to be the GHEEETTTOOOO. Very rough when I lived in P-town. Like you didn't venture out there at nite kind of rough. Not so anymore. Equinox is a hidden gem. We had a GREAT breakfast here - I had the chilequiles and C had the frittata. SWEET GOD. They were so good - and the meals weren't giant, they were just right. Our server was super sweet and the space itself is lovely, open, and...clean, to say the least. We'll be going back there again for sure.

You know who really digs Equinox? Foursomes of ladies, sometimes with a man or two in the mix but always dressed easily, breezily, and beautifully. They entered in droves during the night I came with my own foursome. It was one of those perfect-temperatured evenings that ensured the pretty courtyard patio barely needed to lift a finger in the diners' seduction. With the abundance of reasonably priced cocktails, ranging from the humble but tasty Sauvie (vodka, vanilla liquor, and sours) to some unique, posterboard-paint-hued concoctions, the scene reminded me of a well-known, fluffy drink-toting group of gals. That's right! The Golden Girls! Man I love the Golden Girls! They were feisty dames who didn't need to spout profundities about contemporary feminism and its place in one's quest for love and companionship. The Golden Girls had that shit down years before anyone could pronounce Manolo Blahnik. Plus, my band of diners and I fit the rubric set out by the women on The Golden Girls pretty nicely (or so we shall for the purposes of this review). *SOPHIA: My Not-Ma-in-Law, the elder stateswoman of our table. Not-Ma is not from Sicily but is just as exacting about her food as any Southern Italian woman. Have you ever cared for a baby? You try rocking, changing, giving milk, burping, and the kid keeps wailing for something without being able to articulate precisely what she wants? That's how it is to find food in Portland that Not-Ma likes. Yet she liked her stuffed chicken at Equinox. I tried a bite, and I understand why. It was moist and cooked exactly how chicken should be. Plus, it had bacon. DOROTHY: Deep-voiced and snarky, this could only be JorTer. JorTer ordered the pork tenderloin, which came in a pool of cilantro-citrus sauce and polenta. Did I ever think my sports-obsessed, PBR-bred boyfriend would ever seek out and enjoy polenta? I did not. BLANCHE: I'm going to make Baby BroTer the lascivious one of the bunch just because I can. Baby BroTer ate the enchiladas, which was drenched in this lovely sauce that contained just the right balance of sour cream, chipotle, mole, and onion flavors. I know because I ate it, too. You thought I was going to make myself Rose, didn't you? Well, I'm not. But I will say that every dish on our table received raves, and with a very pleasant staff, you don't need me to be the fourth Golden Girl. You don't need a fourth anything, just get yourself up north and eat here. If you don't, the ghost of the dearly departed Estelle Getty will smack you until you wise up. * RIP, Estelle Getty, you venerable broad you.

I've been here 3 times now, and have loved it every time. I haven't been disappointed with the food yet, and it is a very nice venue with plenty of outdoor seating. I think the menu is ever-changing, but my particular recommendations would be the "summer pillow" (I think), which is a delicious pastry, and the dessert coffee drink made with Stumptown, coconut milk, and chocolate.

Cute place! The weather was nice so the outdoor seating area was open. We visited because of a Groupon purchase. Service was definitely a 4, but food was a 3. Had the mussels and calamari as starters, they were good, basic. I initially ordered risotto for dinner and it was sent back. They combined too many flavors so it was a little bitter. The server graciously took it back and allowed me to replace it with an order of anything else. I ordered the gnocchi, but again it was just good. A bit too oily. For dessert we had the Farmers Market crisp and the Cappuccino Brûlée. The crisp of the day was Strawberry Rhubarb. The crisp part was missing because there was too much butter. A little disappointing. The Brûlée was good however. All in all cute place, but I think they tried a little to hard to spiff up the simplest of dishes.

This place has the best ambiance! The music was pleasant, the candles were nice, our waiter had a really soft but audible voice. It's a great casual date place. My husband ordered the EQ Burger and said it was "straight-up deliciousness" and I ordered the special squid ink pasta with calamari, scallops and mussels, also very good. Prices were good, service was good. We'd definitely come back the next time we're in Portland!

I went here with some friends while I was in town this weekend. I've never been to the Mississippi 'hood before, so I don't know how ghetto it used to be, but I love it to death now. It's got just enough grit to make the unbelievably charming shops so adorable without being nauseating. And in my opinion, Equinox fits into this 'hood perfectly. We had brunch and the food was great - I got the Big Ol' Roxy breakfast sando, which was grilled sourdough with a fried egg, bacon, lettuce and tomato with a chipolte aoili - it was delicious. Everything looked great on the menu (lots of tough decisions), service was great and the prices were totally reasonable - $11 for a huge sandwich, potatoes and bottomless coffee. Next time I come back, I'd love to spend some more time in Mississippi and check out Equinox for lunch or dinner too - they have a really cool outdoor front patio that looks perfect for a warm evening.

Equinox blows you away I loved Equinox restaurant and bar from the moment I walked into its front yard patio. The outdoor space was the most decorative and inviting scene, and I can't wait to go back there when the weather gets warmer. Equinox is the epiphany of its name since it was built with all recycled materials, and its menu changes with every season. Off its winter menu, I began with the calamari tempura, which was cooked just right, followed by the Los Tacos De Equinox. This dish was a reflection of all the imagination this place offers with tacos stuffed with chipotle, garlic mashed potatoes, served over black beans and salsa. It was incredible. I wish there were six stars to give this place just for its creativity. Tip: Splurge and get one of their indulgent martinis. I tried "The Clooney," made with Grey Goose Citron, fresh rosemary and fresh lemon juice. Whoa!

Went looking for a nice restaurant in the Mississippi area after a hike up Mt Hood, so I was STARVING. I went for a burger and fries, my compatriot had the dirty rice, but mostly I'm gonna focus on my burger. To start with the best foot forward, the service was awesome (as most in Portland is apt to be I've noticed), and the iced coffee, I dunno if it's just cause I was so tried and needed it, but it hit the spot perfectly. We didn't want to wait for a seat outdoors to open up, but that area looked quite nice. The most important part of the burger, the actual meat, was awesome, tasted great, cooked just right, juicy as hell. However the rest seemed a bit of a let down for the price. The fries weren't soggy, but they lacked any real crispiness. The burger had like 3 rings of an onion, and small ones at that. The dirty rice, what bites she allowed me to have, was great, but at $13 it seems a bit much for a fairly standard dish without even any meat. Overall, a good meal, but a few things did bug me.

Came here this Saturday morning with a girlfriend after putting our names in at two other area restaurants with ridiculous waits. Got here and waited less than 10 minutes (huge plus!!!) I had the Breakfast Pillow and it was delicious. My friend had the smoked salmon hash but couldn't eat much after her delicious and rich coffee drink. I really enjoyed the good and our server was super friendly and helpful when we couldn't decide what to eat.

If its a sunny day, this place has a great patio! But don't come here if you are in a hurry, service is extremely slow. It took 30 minutes just to get a beer. The gnocchi is excellent and that alone is worth a visit to the restaurant, the rest of the food we tried was just so-so. Overall, the patio is probably the biggest draw...and the gnocchi!

A bit pricey for the size of your meal. The flavor was there and it was a great setting with good service. I'd like to come here at nighttime also they could turn the music up a little louder outside.

Try the Mushroom Wontons. I've been here a handful of times and have to say the food was not consistent. My first trip to Equinox was awesome, and by the time I'd finished my appetizer and entree I was swearing it was one of the best meals I'd had. But that experience has proven impossible to recreate; even my treasured wontons have been merely mediocre at times. But really, if you get 'em on a good night, you'll find yourself trying to decode the recipe so you can have them everyday of your life.

I had a groupon for this restaurant and had to use it before it expired. I am glad I did. This is a cute out of the way joint in the N Mississippi area. Small, quaint and comfortable. We had arrived early for dinner, so we strolled around and saw some other restaurants in the area we would like to visit. We came back to gracious service and nice atmosphere. We (my partner and I) started with a drink, I had a Sazerak which was delicious. My partner had a Whiskey Ginger. Good drinks. We then ordered and both got different things. I started off with some stuffed fresno peppers and my partner had wild mushroom bites. My peppers were ok, but my partner's mushroom bites were great! Great dipping aioli too! YUMMO! Next came the salads, I had a beets and bleu salad with bacon. Good salad. Partner had Pear and Arugula. Also, good. Then came the main course, I had Chick Pea Crepes with Pork and my partner had a chicken pot pie (We asked to add the chicken, otherwise it is not included) My crepes were something I had never had before, delish! The pork was fork tender and cooked perfectly. The crepes also had spaghetti squash, greens and a cream sauce. The one flaw is that is wasn't warm, but I was ok with that. My partner's pot pie was steaming, so I think my crepes sat under a light until the pie was ready. Ah well. The flaw with the pot pie was there wasn't enough gravy (sauce), it was dry. The flavor was there, just not enough sauce. My crepes were the highlight to me. Then dessert, partner had a chocolate torte a la mode, and I had fig bread pudding. This was delish as well, love figs, but I had only had them in Fig Newtons, LOL! Really good flavor with the bourbon caramel sauce and the figs, just the right amount of sweetness. The torte was dense and moist. Overall, not a bad feast, not great, just really good. The portions were just right and filled me perfectly. I would return. They have a brunch which we may try, who knows!

I am giving Equinox two stars, instead of one, because I've never given a one...but it kind of deserves it. It's kitty-corner from my apartment, so I've always wondered why we haven't stopped in. Last night, we did--and I resolved never to do that again. Shrimp bisque tasted like salt gravy with croutons suspended on the top. Burger was dry, fries had clearly been sitting under a heater all day long. My cocktail, the "Is Like Baby" tasted and looked like a mud puddle. I couldn't even finish it (and you will never, EVER hear me say that about alcohol again). I'll stick to Mississippi Station when I want a cozy atmosphere from now on, thanks.

what a heavenly morning! we arrived at 9:00am ish - before a waiting list could begin...and we had two 7 mothers in tow....so we like to beat the crowds. tables were swiftly moved together to accomodate us and we had 2 high chairs for our widdles. i ordered the benedict with peppered bacon and found myself in scrumptious city. it was beautifully presented and tasted divine. i love me some peppered bacon and the puffed pastry was a welcome change to the traditional english muffin. but the sauce stole my heart. i couldn't decipher it: was it sweet? yep. was is spicy? absolutely. i love that it was so totally both (esp when it's often difficult for me to decide between a sweet & savory breakfast). i was a total breakfast hoarder (i get like that when i really like my meal choice) - so i didn't share. and therefore was not shared with - so i can't comment on anything else. we'll def. go back!

Is it just me, or are there, like, a TON of overpriced restaurants in Portland? What? They're not overpriced? You're saying I'm cheap? Whatever. I'm just saying that if I'm going to spend $12 on gnocchi (reasonable, yet the CHEAPEST thing on the menu) and shell out an extra $4 for chicken ($2 would have been a fairer price), it better be a party in my mouth. Sadly, it was not. You see, I grew up in an Italian household. The kind where we made our own pastas, raviolis, gnocchis, sausages, sauces, and breads. That said, I know the way a gnocchi should taste and feel: It's this very delicate balance between soft and hard...not too mushy, but not too chewy, either. Unfortunately for Equinox, what I call their overpriced (but in reality probably normally priced) pasta was undercooked. These gnocchis were muuuu-shy! And I had to ask our waitress if there was chicken in the dish, because although the menu said "grilled chicken," which normally goes on top of dishes so, you know, you can SEE it, the chicken happened to be the size and shape of the gnocchis, and also buried in the sauce. So I had no idea if what I was about to eat was pasta or meat! Oh, and don't expect a basket of free bread. Always a travesty to the carb-loving me. The sauce was tasty. I give them cred for that. However, I wasn't a huge fan of all the cooked spinach in the sauce. Save it for your ravioli filling. Sheesh. Wait staff was friendly and attentive, the wine wasn't bad for $19 for the bottle, and there's something to be said when the chefs in the kitchen (that's also super close and open) are gutsy enough to have a cigarette tucked behind the ear. Oh, oh...I forgot...there's a pretty big patio that was beautiful at night when I went, so just think about how gorgeous it will be during the summer! With one of their many overpriced cocktails! (Just kidding.)

I went to Equinox on Saturday with two friends of mine for lunch and we had an amazing time. They have a great patio area, the service was prompt, but most importantly the food and drinks were amazing! We went at lunch time but since we were nursing slight hangovers we decided to have some breakfast food. We started with some drinks - a couple of fruit flavored mimosa's and a chipotle bloody mary. The Blackberry mimosa is delicious and the chipotle made it the spiciest, smokiest, and best bloody mary I've ever had. I'm not the best judge of bloody mary's because I rarely drink them but it was awesome :) For entrees, two of us had scramble type dishes and the other had a great version of eggs benedict with some peppered bacon. We all like our meals so much that we had to share them! For about ten bucks a plate this is a delicious plate to get some great lunch. I haven't been inside but the patio is a ton of fun. You won't be disappointed!

I recently had my bachelorette dinner at Equinox and was so impressed by the experience! We were a large, and relatively noisy group, but our wonderful waitress never missed a beat. She was friendly and fun, but got us our food and drinks very promptly, and even agreed to split the check into many pieces. The food was excellent, the atmosphere on the patio where we sat was beautiful, and the service was excellent.

We came here for dinner and brought my grandmother and her husband. 3/4 really loved it. My G-ma ordered the Tuna salad special and she said the tuna was perfectly cooked. I ordered the chick pea crepes--I would recommend them. They were light but full of flavor. My fiancé ordered the pork loin and I tasted some of it--I am not a huge fan of pork and even I had to state that it was delicious. It had a phenomenal sauce on it. As for apps we tried the mushroom bites ---TO DIE FOR (p.s. not healthy, just tasty). The grilled asparagus, the calamari and the sweet potato fries. They were all good. The calamari and the fries were pretty standard but I never met a sweet potato fry I didn't like. My G-ma's husband tried the chicken. I did not taste it but he reported that it was good. The bourbon ice cream is different & unusual and we liked that about it. The chocolate cake is "ok" and as delicious as any other chocolate cake I have had... nothing to write home about. The presentation of the food was creative and the service excellent. We brought my G-ma's dog and sat outside. It was 90 degrees this day and there were some flies that lingered outside. I would sit inside next time. It was a Saturday night and had made a reservation--we were a half hour late and when I called them on the way to let them know they were very nice about it and said it was fine. There was not a wait for others who came in to dine. We will go back to Equinox.

Came in for beer and snacks, both were delicious. Made me wish I'd been hungrier. Service was really good, the space was quiet enough when the band was or wasn't playing, which was also a plus. Would not mind coming back some time.

Visited here for the first time recently and appreciated the outdoor courtyard seating and the dog-friendly attitude. Service was friendly, but disconnected. We had three different servers over the course of our dinner. Of the food we ordered, the only thing outstanding was the roast asparagus. The salad was OK, but not very flavorful and the portion was small for the price. The worst, though, was the mushroom ravioli. Did anyone look at this dish before it was served? Flat, grayish brown topped with little pools of oil, it was the most unappealing looking thing imaginable. The pasta was not particularly fresh and it was overcooked, and the flavoring was primarily salt. This could be a good place, but not with food like that. We're not likely to return as there are many other outstanding restaurants from which to choose in the area.

They have a nice big patio and we were seated there pretty quickly. The wait staff was perfectly pleasant, but extremely understaffed and overwhelmed (even by Portland standards). The food was just so-so at happy hour. Not terrible, not amazing. And I would not recommend the place for beer drinkers. I might take out-of-town guests there if it was beautiful outside and we had no where else to be. But I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again.

Dinner review The outdoor patio is nice and seems to be where most customers want to sit when the weather is nice. Shaded and relatively cool anytime after early afternoon. The indoor seating seemed stark and uninviting, though I'm not sure why. The service was pretty good through the entire dinner. Beets n Bleu salad $8 - The menu description had me expecting a pile of beets with some cheese, bacon and dressing. It ended up being a standard green salad with a small amount of beets, some cheese crumbles and a strip of bacon. Not bad, but not what I expected and I would have preferred the version I pictured ahead of time. I probably would not get this again. Deep Fried Salmon and Oyster Appetizer $8 - This was a daily special. You get three pieces. They consist of a small oyster, a small piece of salmon, coated in something I could not identify and then deep fried. It comes with lemon wedges and a mild dip made with cilantro leaves. The dip and the crunchy exterior were pretty good, but the salmon/oyster interior was watery and did not have much taste and was not seasoned. I would not get this again, though the people I was with liked it. Fish n Chips $16 - This was what I ordered and it was a major disappointment. You get a wide shallow bowl with french fries in the bottom with fish piled on top. When ordering I asked the waitress if the chips were crispy. She responded that they were "extremely crispy". They were not. They might have been a little crispy at some point, but that was before they sat in a tub for a while. They were a bit soft and not especially hot when served. Initially it looked like I had gotten three large pieces of deep fried fish. No. I received one piece of fish with a lot of crispy batter and then two huge pieces of crispy batter that they passed off as fish. (Tip: Try the Frying Scotsman If you want three times as much fish, one third the amount of batter, the same amount of fries for a third of the price.) I would not order this again. Risotto with spring peas, oyster mushrooms, and spinach, topped with shaved parmesan $8 (small 5 oz version) - Not very good. There was still a lot of free liquid, the rice was over cooked and it did not have much flavor. I would not order this again. Chick Pea Crepes $15 - One of my companions had this and indicated that she liked it. Cocktails - Mojito $7 - A really small drink for the price. Not much ice. A single mint leaf that did not get much muddling. My wife said it was OK, but that she would not order it again. Beer - They listed five or six draft beers on the menu, but only had two in stock. They serve them at a relatively high temperature. Close to what you might get at a real English pub. Conclusion: Nice location, good service, mediocre food and beverages and prices that are not justified by the food. I will not be returning.

I went here last evening with 3 other people and had to say, we just had a so-so time. The waitress we had was extremely patient with our many food "issues" (allergies, asking for things not on the menu, etc.). Ultimately, they came through on every request, which was great to see. That being said, however, I was a little disappointed by the menu. The food was good, alright but just "good"--I expected a whole lot more given the reputation and the final bill. I'd go again, but only to check out the outdoor seating area for cocktails with friends. All in all, I was simply "whelmed" (not over- or under-). :)

We went to NE Mississippi to eat at the Mississippi Station which we discovered had closed. I had looked at the Menu for Equinox online and we decided to give it a try as we were already in the the neighborhood. We started with the Crispy Wild Mushroom Bites and the Grilled Bread. The mushroom bites were beyond good, they didn't have whole chunks of mushrooms in them but a mix of mushrooms, blue cheese and chives. YUM! rich but so good. The bread was good and the pepper spread that came with it was nice but I think I will have dreams about the Crispy Mushroom Bites. My sister and husband also loved them. Then the adults had the Beets n Blue salads. The greens had a wonderful light dressing with blue cheese, chunks of roasted beets and a nice slab of crispy bacon on top. So far everything had exceeded our expectations and left us wanting to try all the other options for starters and weeds. For the entrees I had the Pork Loin it was came with chili verde drizzle on top that added just the right brightness to offset the richness of the pork. The potatoes were fried with chorizo which was crispy so it worked with the creamy potatoes and the greens that were served with it had just a kick of spice that made me want more, more, more. My sister had the Chick Pea Crepe with added chicken it was very fresh and had a flavor that made you think of springtime with the asparagus and greens and goat cheese. Husband had the special which was lamb, I'm not a fan of lamb (raised them when I was a kid so have trouble eating them) but I did take a bite and it was good, he thought fabulous. Daughter had the Steak with Lardons (bits of bacon that are fried crisp) green beans which were so good she was guarding her plate while trying to eat them all before the rest of us could steal more and potatoes. Dessert - Well of course I had to try the market crisp which was Strawberry Rhubarb, served with fresh whipped cream which was perfect. Daughter had the cream brulee which she allowed each of us to have one tiny taste of before she polished it off. I had the White Russian, sister had the tawny port and husband had The Clooney. All of which I would order again. I can't wait till we go back, I'm sure we are going to become regulars at Equinox. The service was friendly and prompt without trying to oversell or rush you out. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so we can dine on the patio.

I was concerned, after reading other reviews, about the fries. But I have to say, mine were crisp and delicious. And my mussel starter was wonderful, as was my Caesar salad. Also good were my companions chick pea crepes, with pork. The vegetarian pot pie was okay, but not a huge hit. Very nice ambiance and good service.

I have eaten here many times and usually enjoy it (there have been a few disasters though). I love the salads and the weekend brunch. The entrees are either divine or duds. . .but usually more so leaning towards divine. I never got the appeal of the mashed potato tacos and haven't had many good soups or hot apps from them. I do think their prices are reasonable and the food is rich and mostly tasty. I love the salmon and their noodle dishes are usually good. the menu changes seasonally. they have a sweet sounding happy hour that I have yet to make it to . .

This was our first time at Equinox. We were looking forward to the meal. We made a reservation for 6 and were pleasantly surprised that there was no wait to get our seats. The wait staff was very friendly and responsive. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was pretty salty but we finished it nonetheless! For our meal, I ordered the special, which were lamb chops with polenta cakes and fruit chutney and some sort of red wine reduction. My partner ordered the pork loin with a potato-chorizo-greens hash. The chops were very well cooked and tasty. The rest of the plate was lackluster. The polenta cakes were too buttery, something that I normally wouldn't complain about but the flavor was just off. The report on the pork was that it was tasty but pretty salty - perhaps brined but not washed thoroughly enough. The hash was good, too. For dessert, we ordered the strawberry-rhubarb crumble and the lemon tartlett. Both of these were just ok. Not enough of the doughy-goodness on top of the crumble but the fruit was good. The lemon curd seemed like it hadn't set properly so it was runny. It came with fruit which was a nice touch. Our meal, which included 1 lemonade, came to something like $60 so minus our $25 Groupon and including tip, came to $47 - not bad for 3 courses. We'll probably come back and try some of the other items on the menu but tonight's meal was not as good as we were hoping for.

First, its important to note this is the first time i have ever written a review for a restaurant and I've eaten out in P-town a lot. It food was so bad it made me angry. Way too many good places to eat in Portland, let alone Mississippi St., to waste money here. I want so badly to like this place. It has a beautiful patio and promising menu, however it just fell flat. Service was friendly, but below par (it took the waitress three times to bring my friend her Caesar salad with out cheese and we were pretty much neglected once it got busy). I can forgive a server having an off night. Sadly, the food was all around bad. The beet salad was over dressed and had far too much blue cheese, the risotto was too salty to taste anything else, and the grilled crostini was completely dry, crumbly and tasteless. One of my friends had the crepes and was not impressed. On a positive note, my other friend who shared my opinion of the risotto said the Caesar salad was really good.

The place was busy and my dinner was uninspiring at best. My waiter was a stand out though - when my groupon would not download on my phone he acutally left his phone at my table so I could download and get the discount, what a guy!

Went in on a Friday evening without reservations and they were very accommodating. The service was good when you consider that they were booked. I had the grilled Caesar with sauteed shrimp and Spanish anchovies. My wife had the the Solstice salad and claims it was "probably the best salad she has ever had." We will be trying breakfast there soon.

Perfectly pleasant place for brunch. Husband was happy with his bacon Benedict and my tofu dish with romanesco sauce and avocado was great. I had hesitated to order it since it was described as crispy tofu, but it was not. Firm tofu was cut into matchstick sized pieces and cooked perfectly. The side potatoes , on the other hand, were served nearly dried out , very hard and seriously over salted. Coffee was good and tea came with a nice pot of water to last. Pleasant patio, but rather uncomfortable chairs inside and out. Routine nice Portland service. orange juice was standard rather than fresh-squeezed. Not very flexible about dietary concerns when I was there in the past so I didn't ask this time.

Great place to relax, catch up with friends and enjoy some tasty happy hour treats. The service was excellent on my last visit (kudos to Tara). We had the mushroom bites, which are quite good. Also, joining us where the burger and fries. Good too but the fries could have been a little crisper.

My first trip to Equinox was a success! We went on a Wednesday night and just missed the happy hour crowd so the space was less populated. The openness is more well suited to a full room, but the service was great (thank you!!) and the other patrons equally so. I took my bf...who very much can't stand pretentious hipsterness...to Equinox and we were both very happy with the experience. I love seasonal and local foods, and especially love restaurants that cater to that. Occasionally they are too cool to look at you long enough to seat you. Finding a middle ground for he and I can be difficult. I thought the food was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the wild mushroom won-tons and the frisee salad with bacon vinaigrette. LOVE! Who invented this? I already LOVE bacon...more than my arteries can stand...but bacon VINAIGRETTE?? Over the curliest of curly greens and an egg to boot? Yes. Happiness. I'd like to go again when it was a little more bustling, and especially in summer. I think it would well suited to a warm summer evening, sitting on the patio sipping a tasty mojito.

Cute and simple and delicious. Seriously. I really enjoyed my experience at Equinox. The menu takes standard restaurant fare and gives it a really unique flair. They use local, fresh ingredients and it shows. They have a list of about 7 or 8 mimosas as well as a seasonal latte, plus all the standard breakfasty fare. It's really tough to choose. The food was quickly brought out and piping hot, but you're definitely not pressured to get out. The staff was attentive but not in your face. It was raining out, but the light from the skylight really made a cute dining atmosphere. Very comfortable and clean. I'd love to get outside to their front patio though. It looks like it'd be a great experience. I will definitely be back.

Service is utterly awful. Food is amazing... That's pretty much it. Doesn't matter how many people are working, there are 7 empty tables, and it take 20 minutes to get seated. Unenthused servers. If the food wasn't crack, I'd NEVER come here.

I love Equinox. Not only its a 5 minute bike ride away, it is also a great spot for your romantic date or a night to impress your parent how awesome Portland is. My boyfriend and I kind of discover this place by accident. We woke up super early to go hiking at the gorge, but wanted to grab a bite at Gravy. The line was too long for us so we turned the corner and saw this really cute garden. There it is, Equinox, mostly empty but totally cute. We went in and fell in love. The restaurant decor is cute, kind of that industrial log mill look, very pacific northwest. The open kitchen makes the place smell super good. For the sunday brunch, I got the salmon hash $10, YUMMY YUM YUM. My bf got the breakfast puffy pastry $9, that was pretty good too. Pretty cheap for such a nice restaurant and beautiful food. We came back for dinner the following week. We both got 2 glasses of wine, $14. I got the winter puffy pastry (filled with mushroom, chevre, squash, ...etc.) covered with sweet sauce, $12, it was just okay, the breakfast pastry was way better. My boyfriend ordered the vegetarian spinach risotto, oh my gosh, that was tasty. I should have order that! Why didn't I?! It was a fairly large portion too. We got the pear crisp for dessert, it was just okay, should've try the creme brulee. Dammit! PS: The service is very good, very attentive and smiles.

One of my favorite breakfast spots in town. The eggs Benedict is great! So are the breakfast pillows and equinox bowl. Also good for dinner - good seasonal menu. The service is usually good but never overly friendly. Nice patio too!

I dunno guys, I saw a review on here that said "fries had clearly been sitting under a heater all day long. " I happen to know that Equinox doesn't have such a heater so maybe the review was of the wrong restaurant? Equinox is a great place to get Sunday brunch. Never too crowded the food is always cooked fresh to order and is fast. The service is not overly solicitous (which I prefer). The coffee refills are plentiful and the interior is bright and pretty. Things move quickly and efficiently so there is never a ridiculous line. I always take out of town guests and friends from other quadrants (NoPo represent) there and they always ask to go back. Plus, you can't beat the patio there in summertime.

Why stand outside Gravy in the rain when you can get a table right around the corner at Equinox?!?! Their food is eclectic and local and the menu changes seasonally. The staff is always curteous and it never seems to take long. Breakfast is best - local sausages, fresh eggs and veggies, but I hear the later night menu is delicious as well.

I'll start by saying the brunch is excellent. I strongly endorse the breakfast pillows and the portabello bene. The bloody's are quite good, too - the serrano vodka has an excellent pepper flavor without being overwhelmingly hot. I recently also had dinner here - the gorgonzola ravioli was good but someone in the kitchen got a bit heavy with the salt - it wasn't inedible but it was pushing the limits - and I have no issues with lots of salt - I will plunge ranch Doritos in french onion dip on occasion. As for the service this place is a bit of a train wreck. Although on my first trip I had no issues, the last two have been excruciating. For the dinner service everything took forever - which is too bad as they probably could have sold me a couple more beers in the time it took for the food to come. Most recently was brunch Saturday afternoon. There were several open tables on arrival but it took the busser/runner a while to remember that he had promised to seat us. Our server was fairly prompt in taking our drink orders (a cocktail each and two coffees) - receiving them was another issue. After 10-15 minutes our cocktails arrived but the coffee (which I expected would have been there rather promptly) never arrived. The food arrived relatively promptly and provided an opportunity to request the missing coffe I had wanted now that my bloody had been gone for some time now. The bill then presented the opportunity for a refill (finally!). Ah yes - the bill. We received the correct bill. My card was taken promptly. The server returned with two bills and two cards looking confused - I looked at what she had and pointed out my card with the correct bill. Apparently that was not sufficient as she insisted she had mixed them up and dashed off to void and re-run them. She then returned to announce she had them correct the first time. I did finally receive the correct bill and card back with the assurance that none of the transactions had been processed and I would not see them on my card. I now have 5 pending charges for Equinox in two repeating dollar amounts. If they clear I suspect I should take it up with my bank as the staff will likely not be able to handle a request so complicated as correcting the charges. In summary the food is worth it if you can sit back and enjoy the comic tragedy that is the service at Equinox!

So deceiving!! The menu looks great, the atmosphere awesome, the mimosa list extensive (different flavors like mango and strawberry), but then the glory fades when it takes 10 minutes for water....your mimosa is just ok (and expensive), you never see your waiter again until the food arrives which is the most disappointing part about the experience. BLECH. We should have went to....well, anywhere but here.

  • Nina S.

I love this place, it's one of my favorites, delicious AND beautiful! The food has always been really great, the service is really good (extra impressive by Portland standards) and they have multiple yummy mimosa style drinks. Offers of mimosas always bring the score up a notch for me.

Always a taste of disappointment. Like the time my friend ordered a lemon drop and got salt on the rim not sugar. Or the other time when my salad was wilted. Or how about the time when the shrimp was overcooked.

I have been here a couple of times for breakfast, and always like it. But on a recent dinner trip, the service was slow and unhelpful, despite not being very busy. The food was nothing great. I would not go back for dinner. Would try it again for breakfast.

Super underrated. Great quality, ingredients, tasty omelets. Great patio, simple and understated interior. Prompt, professional service. After taking your one night stand home from the bar, be a gent and take her to a nice breakfast at Equinox. It is the least you could do.

Around the corner, Gravy has a line out the door, and we always get seated at Equinox almost immediately. They don't seem to have quite the hype, but the eggs Benedict are the best I've ever had, and I have a hard time ordering anything else. We've only had dinner here once, and all our dishes were great. I found the steak to be cooked to my liking, moist and flavorful. There seem to be some poor reviews of the gnocci, but i've never had gnocci that DIDN'T taste like gummy potatos in cream sauce. My only complaint is that the appetizers are skimpy. $8 should buy more than 5 shrimp. The mushroom wontons are incredible, but again, they could at least throw in an extra wonton for a party of 6. Portions are not huge, but I always end up surprisingly full.

    (4)
  • Brent F.

Seriously. Gravy is nice, but Equinox is right there and you don't have to wait 30 min plus for your food. Warm and cozy inside. Equinox feels like a nice neighborhood place and the food is quality and filling for a decent price. They have a nice patio (weather permitting) and although I didn't have a bloody mary, once I saw them, I wanted to. Yum yum. Will have to check it out for dindin as well.

This place seems to have gone way downhill. I took a party of ten there last night and the food was indifferent/disastrous. The sausage wrapped salmon looked like something out of Alien and my gnocchi tasted like marbles in cream sauce. If the server ever smiled I did not see it. Mostly it was just really disappointing because it used to be a great little spot, very romantic and a great dinner for the price. Alas, no more.

We just ate here last night and had mixed feelings. Other times we've left quite happy but yesterday's experience fell a bit short. Their cocktails are delicious, the grilled Caesar salad was absolutely amazing! Both our burgers arrived well done and a little dry, although we asked for medium. The french fries were tasty but some were broken and clumped up, not appealing. I would go again though...more Caesar salad please!!!

I've enjoyed Equinox ever since I moved here 7 years ago. I love the outdoor patio, the friendly wait staff and the food is always good. There's a good selection of seasonal dishes as well as a good selection for vegetarians. Last night I went with 2 friends and had a Groupon which I purchased. Again, the food was terrific. The vegetable pot pie my vegetarian friend has was wonderful, a nice, large serving. The grilled endive salad (caesar basically but more interesting) was incredible. The dressing wasn't overly garlicy, the whole anchovy on the top wasn't the usual overly salted thing, but almost tasted like fresh anchovies--better quality, mildly marinated, wonderful. The grilled endive gave the whole thing a wonderful smokey flavor. I also had the gnocchi which was amazing. Made with pumpkin, leeks, potato and had an incredible mixture of spices that really made it unusual. My other friend had the mussels and after tasting one, I have to say it was not great. The mussels had a very strong flavor--not spoiled, just not sweet and fresh tasting. She didn't seem to mind, but I couldn't have eated this dish. Service was extremely friendly. The serving of the dishes was a bit off, with my gnocchi coming almost after everyone else was finished, and the waitress apologized several times. I didn't mind because I was visiting with friends, but the meals could have been better coordinated. Otherwise, still love the place and will continue to go back. Very reasonably priced and always interesting things to eat. I also very much appreciated that whatever music they were playing was waaaay in the background and that I could actually hear my dinner companions. I swear there should be restaurants that have "quiet hour" along with "happy hour" so one can hear themselves when they eat. Nothing like yelling through an entire meal to be heard. Or, at the very least, a class in lip reading for restaurant goers. But here, the lighting was perfect and it wasn't too loud. Thank you!

I have never been here for dinner, but I have been several times for brunch. I used to think that it was expensive here, but in all actuality, it is not; $11 for steak and eggs is totally reasonable. The husband and I used to order the re-builder, which is 3 eggs, steak, potatoes and toast. There have been occasions where the husband, being the super picky chef guy, has returned the steak for being over cooked. They have always comped the meal when that has occurred and sent us back a fresh, correctly cooked meal. We went back this morning after not having been for at least a year. I had the NoPo scramble, which is pepper bacon, sausage, cheese all mixed up in scrambled eggs. I added avocado for a nice touch. The husband had one of the breakfast sammies, his choice being the Tara's Craving: proscuitto, bacon, eggs and cheese on ciabatta bread. Very good!! The husband also had a cappucino, and the bill came to $21. Not bad! We had prompt, courteous and attentive service, and the food is fresh, well prepared, and all at a decent price. We originally planned to go there this morning, but I decided we should try Miss Delta's. Not open til 5. Then, we thought we might try Gravy (never been), but the tables were all full and there were at least 4 folks waiting. I don't like to wait anywhere, so we headed right back to Equinox. No wait, though it was 10 minutes to their breakfast/lunch closing. No problem!! Seated with a smile. I'm glad we went back!

Equinox is the perfect place to go on a warm, lazy summer night. I say warm because their patio rocks, and I say lazy because the service is so slow you better not be in a rush to get anywhere. They have an extensive cocktail list, I had trouble choosing. My first drink was something fruity, it was good but nothing special. My second drink was the Mama Mia, and it was tasty. Sweet and spicy at the same time, the perfect compliment to our dinner. Unfortunately, after two drinks neither of us had a good buzz, so I'm going to venture to say they're not all that strong. Oh well. For our appetizer we had the shrimp wrapped in prosciutto. The shrimp was a tad overdone, but it still tasted amazing. For entrees we shared the pork loin and the ravioli. I preferred the ravioli, he totally dug the pork (I thought the size and shape of the meat made it hard to cut without feeling a bit butch). As we were finishing up our server/host announced to the entire patio that the sunset was beautiful and we should all admire it. I'm sure it was, too bad I was distracted by my empty glass, which he took no notice of. We kindof got the feeling all of the servers were a bit stoned. Which I guess is ok, but like I said, don't be in a rush. Anyway, we finished the meal with a glass of port and the tiramisu. Delicious.

I really wanted to like Eqinox...I just wish it had wanted to like me too. Things started out well. The restaurant has a nice open patio and spacious dining area. J and I sat at the bar. We were looking for something to eat before heading out with some friends. The bartender was a little overwhelmed but eventually got us a drink order and some menus which were crumpled pieces of paper that she smoothed out for us to read. Many of the menu items sounded good and I setteled on the enchiladas while J went for the gnocchi with the addition of chicken. There are size choices on these dishes and since the bartender didn't ask us what size we wanted I almost thought that we got the smaller portions when the food came out. They were both pretty scrawny. My enchiladas were really tasty. The mole was nicely done but I had asked for the vegetarian version and mine came covered in meat that was the beef-e-est "pulled pork" I have ever had. While I am not a Vege it would have been nice to get what I ordered. The only response I got from the harried bartender was 'oh, I''ve been screwing up all day'. Oh, well, good for you. J's gnocchi were overcooked and the promised arugula (three leaves, yes, just three) and chicken (literally couldn't have been more than 1 tenderloin) left him hungry and undewhelmed. For a $40 bite to eat Equinox should have done a better job.

Equinox is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland if not my favorite. Most of this credit is because of the incredible mushroom wontons and the cocktail list. With names like Passion Pep Incorporated and Garden of Eden the cocktails do not disappoint. They are delicious! The enchiladas are a close third, but you would have no regret if you went with the gnocchi or risotto. All of these change with the seasonal menu. The interior is nicely appointed, but the real gem is the outdoor patio in the summer.

This place is just divine. I can't say enough good things about how wonderful the food and service during our visit today. The grilled breakfast Burrito is filled with chunks of garlic, bell peeper, egg, hash browns and love. This beast is big enough to split too. The vanilla extract bacon butter is amazing for our big pancake too.

Waited awkwardly long at the host stand to get acknowledged by someone. A hipster looking guy with long wavy locks asked us if we wanted to sit outside, as I turned around and glanced I said, "doesn't look like there is an open table out here". Why would he offer a table out there when there are none? It felt like the twilight zone. We sat at the bar inside. This is where it gets interesting. It took about 15 minutes to get some service from the all male staff. They had to walk by us repeatedly without any greeting or shred of friendliness. It was getting really awkward. Saw a guy eat off of a guest's plate when he went behind the door with a WINDOW. You're still visible to the 2 guests staring directly at you through the port hole! Same guy who eats off people's plates comes by and gives us the menu lowdown. Literally 60% of the menu was different than what was printed, which he recited militaristically, and then left us again for another 10 minutes. Why can't they reprint the menu? They couldn't have run out of all that stuff by 7:30pm could they? Finally ordered some drinks. He makes them. He says they're out of martini glasses so he would rather let our drinks sit in the mixing tin getting watered down than to offer a different glass (i.e. rocks glass). He served them with ice anyway. My drink was the mango hoopty. I think he forgot the mango puree, since I saw another proper one go out that was orange, while mine was clear. :( it was ok anyway. The food: calamari was greasy and batter was soft. Aioli lacked any flavor, tasted just like plain mayo. Fried stuff with a side of grease and fat. Bruschetta was $8 for 2 pieces? Wtf? It was something you could make in a college dorm room with a hot plate. Not terrible, mind you, but really mediocre at best. Got the hell out of there and went down the street and finished dinner with great food and a professional staff that made us feel welcome and taken care of that didn't eat off of people's plates within eyeshot.

7 of us dined here on Father's day, and it was disappointing. Our experience started out well enough when we only had to wait 20 minutes or so for a table, but declined steadily from there. First, the coffee was just bad. It was acrid and burnt-tasting. I've been to many a dive-y brunch place and never had coffee this bad before. A cardinal sin, but I had hope of redemption as the menu is full of tantalizing options. I opted for the Albina scramble. Second, the wait. Perhaps this is atypical as it was father's day, but our food took 45 minutes plus. Credit to the server who was kind and attentive throughout, but even drinks were taking a long time -- 10+ minutes for an americano, same for a mimosa. Third, the food. Mixed reviews here--some members of our party were pleased with their meals; I was decidedly not. The potatoes were too dry and dominated quite a bit of the plate, and I had to ask twice for ketchup (after receiving the bland house ketchup the first time). The toast was completely plain--no butter or anything on the side, I had to ask for that too--and lukewarm at best. The scramble, which was marketed as avocado and chorizo, featured maybe 1/4 of an avocado sliced on top, and instead of the expected ground chorizo, huge pieces of room temperature sausage floating about in inconsistently cooked scrambled eggs. The runny eggs and cold sausage did not make a good combo. Considering the multitude of brunch options available a block away, I'm not in a hurry to return to Equinox. Check out Gravy or Radar instead.

So this place was super packed as usual... I went there and sat outside which is really nice got a chance to get some sun. The menu is not overpriced but the customer service sucks. It took about 10 minutes for her to get our drinks place her order them when we were done it took 20 minutes just to get her to bring us to check. On a 1 to 5 scale I give the food a 3 1/2, however not better than gravy's and if you familiar with this area you know gravy's is right across the street you get better food at gravy's and service. The mimosas are not strong in a bring them to you in a small champagne glass for eight dollars...I won't be back

We came here a few times for their happy hour from 4-6pm Tue-Fri - awesome place, especially the patio! They have a bunch of fun drinks served in martini glasses for $5.50, such as the tequila-based Mango Hoopty and the French Kiss, a strawberry/vodka thing. The dishes we ordered were all on point and in the $3-5 range. The mushroom bites, with their bleu cheese and sweet garlic aioli, were very flavorful. I also loved the rigatoni - perfectly cooked al dente pasta, very flavorful veggies, on the vinegary side (looks like this one is no longer available unfortunately!). Service is fantastic, although sometimes the food takes a while to arrive. Will be back here for sure.

We ate here today after friends invited us with their group for brunch after church. I have to say I was extremely pleased with my dish, the seasonal veggie Benedict with a side of pepper bacon. My husband had the house Equinox salad with smoked salmon added; he loved his dish. We look forward to returning and trying the dinner menu.

Their special menu item, Bacon Chicken Mac 'n Cheese, is unbelievably delicious. The service was great and the beer was tasty. Go!

We came here on a groupon. First of all the patio is amazing, it was a rainy spring night, but I was already envisioning brunch here. We did have a fabulous dinner. I really enjoyed my ragu. The highlight was the bread pudding brown sugar cake with ice cream. One of the better desserts I've had in Portland. Corkage is $15.

My second visit, invited by friends. Father's Day Brunch Note: Equinox web site shows RESERVATIONS down the right side of the page. We made reservations. On arrival, 10:50ish, approached the hostess to say we had such and in a frenzied hurry she quips 'we haven't taken reservations in 12 years, put your name on the list so we don't forget you' and she scurried off. Uhhhh, what was that?? Name on the list as directed. Seated shortly there after. One special was described as chicken and waffle with country gravy and syrup. Two of us ordered it. When served (see time frame below) we had a full round waffle that couldn't have seen the iron in the last 15-20 mins. Soft and soggy with a pile of arugula in the center, chicken on top, est 4 TB 'gravy' a white watery sauce w/no flavor, syrup and wait for it....Franks hot wing sauce drenched all over. Others at the tables eyes were reacting to it. I'm a Portland foodie, I'll give it a go, even though I NEVER would have ordered it had I known. So I gave it a couple of bites and couldn't do it. It was a stretch that didn't work for me and I would never have been able to eat that much hot sauce. My table mate, with same order, felt the same way. I asked that it be taken back and replaced with a new waffle sans hot sauce- I didn't need all new everything, just dump the square puddles of hot. Same for my friend. Another at the table still hadn't gotten his meal. 10ish min later our chicken and waffles came back out. Now I have an almost burnt waffle, three leaves of arugula and chicken with a white drizzle. Chicken coating very good and crunchy but the chicken thigh wasn't cleaned and large pieces of fat soggy under coating. The one friend still had no food. In the end, we ordered somewhere around 11:15 and didn't get food until 12:30. They comped three of those meals instantly, we didn't have to ask.- but I certainly would have asked for that. The waitress: Was polite and appeared to be doing her part. We always have to remember they can't help it if the kitchen is backed up. She was very sorry for leaving off the Franks info, no snotting us off or exasperated looks when I wanted my waffle to go back. And what did her professional attitude that get her?? It got her the full tip as if we had not been comped. I have find this place TRYING to do some good things but juuuust missing the mark. Interesting combinations with lack of flavor and poor execution. Eggs Benedict, on my previous trip, poached eggs on dry blah bread. Worst I've had- no thought behind it. It's not hard to mess this up but they've managed to. The Pillow, eh soggy puff pastry, like the waffle, it seemed to have sat back there quite a while before coming out. Bloody Mary rave reviews- to each their own but our whole table found them to be unworthy of the raves. Mimosa- watery I really hope they don't want to go back again. Too many other places to try or to return to before ever coming back here again. Twice is enough.

In love with their starters! Get the polenta fries, they're just perfect! I'm also a big fan of their salads, they're nice and fresh. Definitely going again!!

Could be called "Salem's Fanciest Restaurant" and I would have believed it. Here's the deal: The food was good. The ambiance was decent. Service was pleasant, if a little rushed. And yet there was something a bit...boring about it. I'm not sure how to even describe the restaurant because there's nothing about it that really grabbed my attention. If someone asked me how I would describe it, I couldn't come up with much more than: "It's a place that has American-ish food and it's mostly good but slightly not warmed through at times" The cocktails were bomb, though. I'll give you that.

Happy hour is great! They have a spicy habanero cocktail that is so so spicy and so so delicious. Also try the spaghetti squash dish for happy hour-- divine! Fries are salty perfection On the happy hour menu too. Eat now!

Not that impressed. Ordered the crepes and they arrived stone cold. Sent them back. The waitress brought us a "new order" telling us they were supposed to be for another table, but she wanted us to have them. We could tell they were the exact same crepes we just sent back, the kitchen just added some more lukewarm sauce. Sent them back again. This time we got warm crepes. There is a reason you can always get a reservation at this restaurant at any time on a weekend, it is going down hill and people are going elsewhere.

The food is ok. I've inly ordered out from Delivered Dish and every time they mess up my order. Not sure if they just don't like to go orders but I would not recommend ordering to go. Although it sounds like the service isn't much better.

Have eaten dinner here several times and have never been disappointed in the food or the great service and friendly staff. Stopped by for brunch for the 1st time last week and it was wonderful! My wife and I love sitting on the spacious patio and enjoying the beautiful weather. Had the Salmon Benedict (AMAZING!) and my wife the Salmon Hash(AMAZING as well!) Even better were the drinks. My wife had a delicious Hibiscus Mimosa and I ordered the Bacon Bloody Mary... Beautifully presented with enough veggies to practically be a salad and even a slice of bacon nestled amongst the produce, YES, BACON!! Bacon infused and probably one of the best Bloody Mary mixes I've had in a long time(and I am picky as I used to be a bartender and prided myself in my special house made Bloody Mary mix). The staff is friendly and the service excellent and the food is quintessential Portland; creative, real, unpretentious and delicious!

I've had better dining experiences at Equinox in the past. Ordered the pork, which was nicely prepared, however, the polenta and spinach were over cooked. My wine was served in a dirty glass. Waiter was friendly and the outside patio is still best part of the evening.

We came here for brunch because Gravy was packed with a long wait. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash. I was debating between the Equinox Bowl, Back to Bed, or one the Scrambles and I wish I had gone with one of those. My friends ordered those and they all looked delicious. The Hash was very meh. The corned beef was extremely salty, which wouldn't have been so bad if there was something in the dish to counteract it. Unfortunately everything else was very bland. I hardly even noticed the dijon hollandaise which looked to be the most exciting part. It's not terrible, but if I am visiting Portland I'd rather spend one of my few meals somewhere better.

Hands down the BEST brunch on Mississippi! The Boise, the Breakfast Pillow, Bennidicts, Hash, on and on, I haven't tried something I haven't liked here. The bloody Mary's are sublime, multiple mimosa options , yummm. I will be back, as many times as possible. Two thumbs up!

85 degree evening with a slight breeze, sitting in the patio with family, drinking the cucumber lime Ricky. Pure summer. The salt cod fritters were awesome-crunchy outside, light inside. Sooooo yummy. Fried Brussels sprouts were delish. Finished with the blood orange creme brûlée, which was perfectly smooth and just a bit tangy. Love this place.

Went on a quiet Tuesday night. The waiter was very friendly. I asked to have the bread side dish before I received my main course, as I wanted something to eat while enjoying a beer, but didn't want to commit to an appetizer. The bread and my main course came at the same time. :( I'm pretty sure I heard the waiter upbraid the kitchen staff for doing this, so points to the waiter for saying something. Also, my first pint was 1/5 foam. That's 20% of the glass! I'm not exaggerating. On the plus side, my meal was exquisite! I had breaded pork with mash potatoes, spinach and capers. It was very good; just like Mom used to make. I also asked the waiter, who told me he pours the beer, that I was hoping to have less foam in my second pint. The second pint was filled to the top of the glass and there wasn't a drop of foam. Very cool! I would go back.

Ok, the food is pretty good here and you don't have to wait in a crazy insane line for breakfast. But I'm not a huge fan of the service that I recently received here for brunch. We got there right when it opened and got promptly seated, which was awesome. I also assumed that it was a pretty family friendly establishment, meaning that it was open to kids eating there. However, I couldn't discern if our server liked our little dude of a human or not. Ok, he spilled some water which we wiped ourselves and didn't expect them to. And that was his ONE accident. But the look on our server's and the lady serving water faces was of total displeasure. Then the food took forever to come out without the waiter giving us an update or anything. Normally, not a big deal but our little dude was getting hungry. He had already munched through the snacks we brought. So we asked if the servers had crackers to keep him preoccupied and they gave us an appalling look. Like "crackers, WTH?!" Anyways, we ended up asking for toast which they charged us. $1.50 for a puny slice of toast. I might as well have asked for them to bring out my side of toast early that came with my hash. Oh, and we never got our coffees refilled. Anyways, I used to really like this place, but this last experience with the service left me with a bad impression.

Bleh! First time we came here for dinner, the wait was soo very long (over 30min), when considering we saw at least 5-7 empty tables inside and outside. A couple arriving before us and having a reservation were seated AFTER us, that's pretty unacceptable. Finally we were seated and given some water from a bucket. OK not great, but whatever. Well it turned out to be the most putrid tap water I've ever drank at a restaurant. Straight up hose water, fouled by the taste of leaked plastic. I poured it out onto the plants. No bueno. I ordered a burger, specifying "medium, but leaning towards medium rare." OF COURSE it comes out well done. Not better than IN and OUT or Little Big Burger, but for 2-3x the cost. Hubby's meal was ok though (he got the schnitzel(sp?)). Drinks were fine as well, nothing memorable. Service was slow as shit. Second time we came here for brunch, SAME THING HAPPENED! Tons of empty tables, waited 30-40 min this time. We saw a ton of groups sign in and just leave, not being acknowledged while staring at empty un-bused tables. After we ordered, we waited another 45 min for our food. Groups coming in and ordering after us got their food. It was like torture, a cruel joke because they knew I was starving. Again, I told them a specific way I wanted my eggs. It's like they don't give a shit. It came it the exact opposite of what I asked for. And it was luke warm. Gag. Waitresses are nice enough and apologized for the food wait, but either they are understaffed or the owners enjoy the line piled up on the sidewalk to make them look busier. All in all, even though I live a block away, I will not be returning for mediocre food and long waits.

Don't get me wrong, the food is good; always fresh with portions that are just the right size. We've never had to wait for a table, even for brunch on the weekend. Service can be slow, but I would rather be sitting with a cup of coffee than standing in line for a table. My partner and I have eaten here a few times. Generally I'd give it a solid four stars. That said, the service today was so unprofessional that I doubt we would go back. We were seated at the bar for brunch where the manager (I gathered from the way people were interacting with her), was bartending. The way she spoke to several of the servers put knots in our stomachs. One interaction was particularly appalling. I won't rehash the semantics of the conversions, but she was disdainful and condescending in a way that just seemed unnecessary and unwarranted. It was awkward to overhear so closely. Although I think people in supervisory positions should treat their employees with respect as a general rule, it is particularly tasteless to belittle them just feet away from patrons. My partner and I were uncomfortable for much of our meal. I hope that the bartender/manager was just having an off day, but I won't continue to support a business in which employees appear to be treated that way.

I recently moved to Portland and while out exploring the area with my husband, we ended up on Mississippi Avenue. It was date night and we thought dinner in this area would suit just fine. Stumbled upon Equinox...couldn't have been a better find. The staff is awesome, the patio seating is quaint and the food is out of this world! His favorite dish there is the prosciutto wrapped shrimp and mine is the black bean cakes, they are quite delicious. We go there at least once every couple of weeks.

This place used to be so delicious and somewhere you could always depend on good food and service. Unfortunately with the change of their chief this has dramatically changed. Their food went from fantastic to mediocre at best and service is slow.

We went here for their brunch, which was pretty excellent. First of all, the restaurant itself is a bit small, but really cute and comfortable. They also have a huge patio out, perfect during the summers. I got a veggie Benedict, while the BF got the Pillow (puff pastry stuffed with roasted red peppers, mushrooms and caramelized onions, topped with two poached eggs and poblano cheese sauce). The veggie Benedict was delicious. I've had veggie Benedicts from other places which will remain unnamed, and they ended up being sad and soggy. Not this one though! The English muffin still held up, even with the vegetables, poached egg, and hollandaise sauce. Veggies were perfectly seasoned and cooked. Egg was cooked to perfection. The hollandaise was rich and buttery and delicious, but not too overwhelming. I'd say it's one of my favorite hollandaises I've had in Portland. BF enjoyed his Pillow a lot. I mean, puff pastry with veggies, poached egg, and cheese sauce. You can't go wrong with that. I ended up stealing a couple of bites from him because it was pretty good. Service was great and attentive. Portions and prices were very fair. BF also got the Irish coffee, which he said was strong. I had a soy latte, which was good, although I wish they had other milk substitutes available. Also, I just have to mention that their house made ketchup is excellent. I love it when restaurants make their own condiments. Even though we're not in the Mississippi area a lot, we'll definitely be back for brunch. Their happy hour/dinner sounds interesting too, so we'll check those out as well.

We came here for brunch because we didn't want to wait for other places in the area but ended up liking it more than most other places in the area that we've tried. The food and service we're great. The breakfast pillow was amazing and they had great sounding specials that I wish I could have also got.

Came here with a groupon. It's a beautiful restaurant in a wonderful part of town. The food was pricey but good. My only real complaint was that portion sizes were that of an appetizer. After each having an entree we were still hungry and had to go somewhere else to eat again. I'm all for not gorging and instead having a reasonably sized, but very well made, dinner but this was beyond that. I don't regret going there but wouldn't go again.

Solid three starts. Nothing outstanding, but nothing negative. It's a little too pricey for the food quality, and the cocktails are just okay. I feel like everything is about $2-$3 more expensive than it should be. The service was nice and the outdoor patio is very cute and spacious. For dinner, our three-top started with the polenta fries which were outstanding (highly recommend!). Then came the EQ Burger (he said it was good), the spaetzle (four stars) and the salmon (kitchen timing on a $20 dish was off, it came out almost cold and the creme sauce had time to start that film-on-top thing). I still enjoyed the dish, and was happy the salmon wasn't scrawny (good size chunk). Again, the place was good but I probably won't be back just because there are better. However, if I lived in this area I might go back to try the happy hour.

Very mediocre in my opinion. Small unexceptional portions. Mussels were undercooked. Would not go back.

I'll start with the bad, just to get it out of the way. Overall, I really like this place BUT, dude...our food took forever, and we each ordered the special, and it was not crowded at all. I think we waited nearly 30 minutes for our Trout Hash to come to the table. That kind of bummed us out. I felt the portion of our particular dish to be true to healthy portions, not typical oversized American portions, which I liked, since we weren't going home after and I didn't want to deal with either overeating to avoid waste or toting around leftovers. Our waitress was friendly, kept waters filled. I think we'd eat here again if we were in the area, but we wouldn't go out of our way to eat here again. We were not wowed, but we liked the food and had no complaints about taste.

  • Elyse L.

Equinox takes reservations and had our table ready for us when we arrived which was very convenient. The patio is nice and has a European-vibe. The inside has a garage door that opens up onto the patio which gives the whole restaurant a very open feel. Our server was friendly and nice but not too attentive. He served us our drinks and didn't return for a good 15-20 minutes. The food took a long time to come out once we ordered as well. The dishes we ordered were tasty but a little heavy on the salt, cheese and cream. Final note: awesome location and atmosphere, however parking around Mississippi is tough on the weekends. Drinks, appetizers and salads are the evening highlights. Could improve on service and attentiveness.

Meh. Mediocre food, friendly but slow service, unimpressive beverage, the atmosphere is more like a daylight bar than a brunch spot. If yelp would let me id give it 2 1/2 stars, but I'm not going to round up.
