One of the best places to eat in Portland. Outstanding service, happy and helpful staff and numerous choices. All the employees seem to love their job and will tell you so if you ask them, saying the owners of this restuarant are like an extended family and treat their employees well. They also only provide the freshest food products and have cooks that know how to make tasty dishes. I recently had fish tacos that were outstanding. The bakery is one of the best in the City. Could not recommend this place any higher for a great, friendly, clean place to eat.

I'm writing purely for their delivered box lunches that we've gotten delivered to work a number of times. They have an creative list of sandwich or salad boxed lunches. There are however only a slim number of vegetarian ones. They are filling in portions, but a bit pricey for what you get. They run about $11 and come with a couple small sides (a roll, small fruit salad, or chips). All of them come with a large gooey cookie of the day. Absolutely delicious. Definitely worth a look if your business is looking for something new to bring into the office.

This was the first place that my friend took me to while I was visiting in Portland. The place is crowded and for good reason. They make everything fresh and the food is fantastic. It is not your typical deli. It is more like a gourmet deli similar to the quality you would find at Whole Foods. There is a wide range of foods from fresh breads and pastries to vegetarian choices and a deli that uses only the freshest of meats. Highly recommended!

I used their services to cater a company function and was very disappointed in the experience I had with the restaurant. The catering rep suggested a menu which turned out to be too little food, by about 20 people. I was left scrambling to find other alternatives 10 minutes before the event started. I contacted the manager of the catering department and she was less than helpful. She offered to send another salad over which arrived 20 minutes after the event ended. I have worked with many catering departments in the past and have always had trust that the catering representative has the ability to plan a menu sufficient enough to feed the group. This was a very disappointing experience. I will add that the food was fresh and tasty, however that didn't mean too much when I was left with a hungry group of people and not enough food to go around. Will not use their catering services again.

Quite a find as we walked around the 23rd street shopping area. Amazing selection of fresh foods, salads, impressive beverages from milk shakes to wine. The hamburgers and chicken fingers delight. Pizza to order as well. Flavorful food with just the right spices.

This new location is really nice. Its much bigger and there is a lot more seating. Lucy Brennan (of Mint/820 fame) signed on the create the cocktail menu which really brings elephants up a notch. Despite the size of this location, it felt crazy in there. The layout was maze like and people were running into each other going from one food bar to another. The cocktail bar area was nice though and despite a packed house, I managed to score a seat at the bar with friend. It was kind of a pain to order sandwhiches, pay for them and then find a seat, order a drink and pay for it. The food and drink are good, so its worth it - if you have time. They could improve by ringing people up once for their entire bill. They have sandwhices, soups, dips, drinks, coffees, chocolates, breads, ummm, that's all I can remember but I know there was more. I like that they offer so many speciality items and I particularly like that they offer a lot of single or small size serving items. Prices are average for a sandwhich and soup, but it can get expensive when you get into imported beverages or treats.

where do you start? don't know exactly what you want for lunch? just show up here and you can find just about anything that suits. love that halibut grilled sandwich, the salads are always fresh and deelish. Still have a lot more to try here including taking home some fancy pants cheese or something. so good.

Until recently I hadn't gone to elephant's more than a couple times as it's a bit overpriced. But then I realized they have a good cheese selection, and their closing time specials are a good deal. I wouldn't go out of the way to get here, but it's a block from my apartment, so when I need cheese a step above what Freddies can offer I'll stop in. The employees are surprisingly helpful in making your selection, and they'll let you taste just about any cheese. I've had a couple of sandwiches from here too. They're pretty good I guess. They'll custom make one, or you can get one premade from the case in the back. Just don't expect to find a place to sit down and eat it. Also, an hour before they close all of their bread and cookies are half off. And I like bread and cookies. (The bread isn't the best, but it's decent. If you're around earlier in the day go to Ken's instead.) There are some other things that are half off too, but I've never tried them.

Definitely not your average deli -- this one earns a solid five stars. First, the space: It's huge and interestingly decorated. Plenty of seating available, and it's very comfortable/casual. WiFi is available (but only for an hour), and they welcome people working on laptops, etc. Second, the food: I had the fish and chips with garlic fries. The fish was lightly battered, deep fried mahi mahi, and the tarter sauce (house made, with capers inside) that came with it was a perfect match. Also, THE GARLIC FRIES WERE THE BEST GARLIC FRIES I'VE EVER HAD. YOU HAVE TO TRY THE GARLIC FRIES. The service was really friendly, there are plenty of vegan options, and I'm really happy to have chosen this place for a late lunch meeting.

I may not be a fancy lady but I do fancy me some fancy food stores. Chandeliers, elaborate wooden bars accompanied by Parisian place mats and rich made in-house hot chocolate? Ahuh. Bring it on. You won't find me sporting a Prada purse but you will find me sinking my teeth into pretty eats with a not-so-fashionable crumb-ridden smile across my face. Fancy = yes. Expensive = yes. All the time = probably not. Elephant's Deli is the perfect place to splurge on gastronomic pick-me-ups and twinkling dinner party necessities like fresh salami, Oregon cheese, vegan cookies and olives by the pound. Do yourself a favor and visit even if you don't need to buy anything. Rumor has it the hot chocolate is to die for - order me a cup, wouldya? I was saving room for some Salt + Straw ice cream and couldn't pull off both in one walk.

This is a lovely find in Northwest Portland. Wonderful ambiance that transports me back to 1920s. Cool tiles floors. There's a huge variety of food. And it is wonderful for those of sensitive to dairy for instance that they list DF items. They also have wheat free and vegetarian. It is really nice. They have a few store sections including the deli, coffee bar, wine shop and sandwich shop. We came for breakfast so quite a few sections were closed but we loved the deli and the sandwich sections. The salami selection is terrific as is the house cure fennel lox. So its a great place for a European breakfast Loved the gentile salami and the mole from the always along Salumi of Seattle. (Mario batelli's sister runs it!) The crab cake is terrific as well.

Good for on-the-go food. They have cold and hot foods. It's on the pricier side, but tastes better than picking up a sandwich from Safeway/Vons. Seating is limited and mainly two-seater tables if you do decide to eat there.

I kick myself sometimes for taking for granted some of the charming establishments I have in my own backyard. This is one of them. Elephants is a feast for the senses. There are the wafts of baked goods, along with fresh soups, panini, etc. as you enter. There are elegant displays of gifts, both edible and not. You're greeted by an open space with stations serving something different at each. The bar has an assortment of libations, and they offer an happy hour. It seems they usually have a hot lunch special available for $7.95 that includes a small side salad. They bake breads in house, and the ones that I have tried have been pretty good, with decent prices to boot. The same can be said for the bakery case. I had a tasty full sized lemon cupcake for $2.50, which wasn't a bad deal. They have a selection of pre-made sides and entrees by the pound in a cold case. Occasionally they have looked better than they have tasted, and the prices have been on par with what you would pay in a nice sit down restaurant. I usually pass on them. I prefer the hot foods they offer by the pound, in particular their chicken enchilada verde. It's nice to be able to choose the serving size. The cheese and charcuterie section has many choices, along with accompaniments such as olives, cornichons, nuts, fine mustard, etc... In their freezer they have entrees ready to be baked and served which is handy for days you don't feel like preparing a meal, yet want something home made. It's tough to beat their selection of soups, which are available both hot or cold to go. Add a panini or one of their excellent salads for a meal. And don't think their salads are the sad greens you will find most places. They are chock full of goodies such as veggies, beans, nuts, cheeses, and sometimes meats with house made dressings. I would highly recommend stopping here on the way to Washington Park since they have everything you could ask for for a lovely picnic. On my last visit I took the time to check out their candle selection. They are all high-end and lovely. Any of them would make a perfect hostess gift. I wound up finding my favorite brand, Capri Blue, in a gorgeous teal mercury glass that I absolutely adore and have been enjoying. If you have some spare time on your hands Elephants is a great browse. I have found the staff to be helpful recommending pairings, and offering samples of items I might enjoy. It's unlikely you will leave empty handed. Don't let the high prices of certain items put you off. Some things are bargains, especially considering the quality. In the evening (maybe 6:30 or so?) they take 50% off the food in the hot case as well as breads, cookies, etc.

Dude. There are just way too many good options here. I come here for a salad and end up leaving with cheese, bread, dessert, bottled Root Beer..... And what about that hot food counter? Dayumn Son!

So many good options from the deli. Fast, relatively inexpensive and everything you can choose from is delicious. Hot food to order or deli options or soup/sandwich bar. Also has a dessert bar which is always a plus.

Such delicious food and nice atmosphere. Top notch food in a relaxed setting. I always end up buying too much because I get excited going between all the different food sections and ordering a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

I live right down the street from this restaurant, so naturally, I've stopped in a few times. The food that I've ordered has been okay, a bit greasy and small portioned for the price. However, since this place has a four and half star review, I wouldn't listen to my opinion. (Perhaps I'm just ordering wrong.) So generally the customer service here is friendly enough, but there was one incident that straight up pissed me off. I've ordered the chicken strips here twice. (Guess I shouldn't be complaining about greasiness. heh.) The first time ordering, I requested honey mustard and the person taking my order said they don't typically serve that with the chicken strips, BUT he'd see what he could do. He was probably a manager, because I ended up leaving with honey mustard and... don't try to tell me it was something else, because it WAS honey mustard, okay? The second time I ordered chicken strips here, I requested honey mustard, yet again ( feeling confident) and was scoffed at by a loud, albeit, busy chef (probably the head) , and was told that they have never served honey mustard, even though I told him that they gave it to me last time. Didn't bother me with words after that, like he didn't have the time to argue with me about something he was sooo obviously right about. Doesn't sound like too much of a big deal, but it was just the way he said things. He was very impatient when taking my order too. It wasn't THAT busy. You know, I don't ask for much, and everything would have been COMPLETELY fine otherwise. ( I would have been okay with using my own honey mustard. (and I did!) Thing is, I don't like it when people think they can talk to me in a condescending manner, especially when I'm paying for over priced chicken strips. The meat to fry ratio is sad.) Guess he thought I was just another snob in the NW district making completely asinine requests with their food order....wait, it was just honey mustard and I said "please." (Seriously, you don't serve honey mustard with chicken strips? Are you that pretentious...or am I just really unsophisticated? Suffice it to say, the sauces that the meal actually did come with were really off putting. I think it was some kind of bbq mix. If you're going to offer that, at least add in honey mustard like a normal restaurant and don't look down on people who ask for it....because. chicken strips. are. normally. served. with. honey. mustard.) Sometimes, you just have to vent about honey mustard not being served with chicken strips, you feel me? Also! this was an isolated incident, so I wouldn't base my opinion on your decision to eat here..Unless you absolutely NEED honey mustard with your chicken strips. ;)

Good food. A bit pricey. Comfy seating if you get the tables against the wall. A bit crowded on the weekend-- you'll have to juggle and quick step to make sure no one plows into you while you're holding your food. Most workers seemed nice.

Hands down, one of the BEST deli's I've ever been to. This location has everything I could ever dream of eating and/or drinking. Tons of cool kitchy things (gifts) to buy, wines, cards, candles, table top decorations... I could go on and on, just look at the pix I took- sooooo many things I love about this place! I was overwhelmed by all the colors, scents, amazing displays, outstanding selection of cheeses, salami's, olives, cookies, cakes, sammies, soups, freshly made breads, nuts, coffees, and not to mention, the delicious display of warm pre-made items in the case, I felt like one of the kids at the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory except in a more grown up version of the film. Completely consumed (underline that twice). You can sample anything that you want, to make sure you like it before you buy it- HOW FAB! Nothing worse then buying something that looks good in the package and then doesn't deliver in the taste department. Needless to say, everything I sampled I LOVED. This deli KNOWS their stuff!! It took me a 1/2 hour just to look around at everything before I finally decided on a turkey and avo sammie on a baguette along with a serving of lime tortilla soup and... Holy. Moly. I think I died and went to foodie Heaven!!!! Flippin DELICIOUS. Oh, and another bonus, there's outdoor seating, which was stellar because I had my dog with me however there's also dining inside where its nice and cozy. If I lived in Portland, I'd visit this gem of a deli at least twice a week. Seriously, SO impressed. As a matter of fact, I think I'll just relocate to Portland so I CAN visit this deli weekly! BEST EVER. No joke mang.

Fun place, great atmosphere and so many choices of good things to eat. Had a delicious lunch, but had to wait 20+ minutes for the line cooks to assemble the plate- at 1:00 pm on a Thursday!

I love this place soooo much. There are a variety of foods sold here from soups to tacos to the infamous garlic fries. I say the best thing to do, is try a bit of everything (if you happen to be in a big group) that way you can share and really enjoy all the fresh foods. This is hands down the best garlic fries I've ever eaten. Once I come back to Portland, this will be my go to spot!

  • Lola R.

The food was very good, as a first time visitor it was rather overwhelming & a little confusing about the order of things. I liked the open seating & the staff was all very pleasant. I was fairly grossed out when I went down to the restroom & a chef walked out of the bathroom stall still with her apron on. That seems very unsanitary & quite rude to the people you prepare food for & I kinda wanted to throw my food back up.

I had the most wonderful experience eating here with my family today. We were presented with an amazing personalized charcuterie board that was filled with the delicatessen's favorite cheeses and salamis (you MUST try the Salumi Mole salami--it's the best salami I've ever had), and so much thought went in to the presentation. The format and ambiance of the market is great, with different stations and selections to make, including a wine bar, deli, and grill. I'm so glad we trusted the other positive reviews and gave this place a try! If we ever return to Portland, we'll definitely come back.

I used their catering service for my reception this weekend. It was awesome. The food was delivered on time. That was a great relief. The display of all dishes were so beautifully arranged and the best of all, the taste of each one of the dishes I ordered were very tasty. Already had people asking for the name to use this ventdor in the future event. I will plan to do that too even for a small party. Their Beef, Pork and salmon were too die for. I am so glad that I used your service.

Really chaotic but really great selection and quality. Be prepared to over order and overpay because everything looks tempting. Pretty nice seating in back. I can vouch for the Reuben and mushroom soup, both very good.

I love their veggie frittata and soy vanilla latte. The serving size it's just right. Coming in here early gives you that sense of being somewhere else. Like you have that sense of a tourist. The workers are busy setting up. Customers slowly trickles in. The staff are friendly. Big band music playing. Cloudy and drizzling outside that you just want to stay in here and people watch. One of the best feature of this place is they have a backroom with a fireplace and lanterns hanging up on the ceiling. Definitely a great place for big groups. That backroom feels cozy even in the winter.

Seemingly healthy comfort food - if that's possible. Easy, quick, good food. I have never been disappointed from wood fired flatbreads to sandwiches and pasta dishes, it is always delicious. Seating is somewhat family style, we often end up sharing a large picnic style table with other diners. It is often packed and very loud inside. I would also love to try their take out pre-prepared foods.

  • Liza M.

I love the food choices they offer here. You have a variety of foods such as burger and fries to chicken enchiladas to baked goods like cookies and macaroons. Some of the food can be pricey, but worth it. You can sit down and eat or take out. It is easy to splurge here. Believe me.

Wow! What a finely tuned operation!!! Just finished the Japanese Gardens and was looking for a solid spot for lunch. Parking lot is packed at 1pm - good sign. Locals galore and jammed inside. Found a spot at the counter, waiting for our order & enjoying the ambiance. Well done, Yelp.

I don't get it. I get that this place is a "Portland Establishment." I even went out of my way to go visit here with my girlfriend, based on the notion of getting a really good deli sandwich for lunch. Hell, I pushed twin infants up a deceptively large hill to get here. And it was...alright. Elephant's has two functions. One is as a hot/cold food service, the other as a store/bakery. Or maybe that's three things. There is a drink station, a grill station, and a sandwich station. There is a bakery, with baked goods. A large cheese cooler, bottles of wine, bread, etc. Everything is scattered around in First World Indulgeries and a lot of pleasure at being clever. When we came in, we ordered from the sandwich station. The guy was very prompt and pleasant, but my order came out wrong. Despite my ticket wanting one cheese, I got another. My girlfriends Caprese Sandwhich, was was mozzarella, basil & roasted tomatoes in olive oil & garlic on focaccia bread....well, she said it was tasteless. She ended up putting some of the garlic fries we ordered on it, just to get some taste. We also ordered the Macacroni and Cheese from the hot grill. I have to say...they tried too hard. The cheese had a bitter, sour taste...and was just not comforting at all. I wanted gooey, kid-like mac and cheese. Instead, I felt angry that I didn't take Art Appreciation and History 305 in College to understand it. We didn't finish it. The drinks station...well, that's a whole other thing. I waited at one end for a while. The guy looked at me, and helped other people. I kept getting called away because of my infants, and when I would come back, it's like I had to start over. People walking up were helped before me. Finally I got helped...and I have to say, the vanilla malt was very good. The sodas were what sodas are. I'm not sure if there were free refills or not, but I didn't try. Ice water was provided. My girlfriend got some mini-cupcakes and cookies from the bakery. The cupcake I tried was delicious, but for the incredibly miniature size and the extravagant price...well hell, I'd rather go over to JaCiva's and get a Seventh Heaven cupcake instead. Sorry, but it's true. They were good, but I've had better. So there's nothing inherently wrong about Elephants....I just think they're riding on a concept, a theme, and a prestige that isn't really quite there. I see no reason to go out of my way to go here, but I would eat here again if I was in the neighborhood or someone else wanted to go.

Just ate there last night with our kids. Such friendly staff, food was so yummy, tasteful, fresh... Was a first time visit (referred here). It was a bit confusing with what seemed like a lot of places to order different foods but then not a lot info shared. Like, I was sold fries however some food came with fries. Where to get drinks besides water. No receipts given nor did I ask as I was paying more attention to my kids while listening for our name to be called... We'll be back though, good food and service made up for my little frustration...

The food is really good here. I would recommend the hamburger and garlic fries. This place literally has anything and everything you could want. Everyone in your group can get exactly what they want. It's a little pricey but in the end the food is worth it. They also don't stay open very late and it's a little noisy, but it's a really great place to grab some lunch.

  • Darryl J.

The food tasted great, but unfortunately, I experienced my worst food poisoning ever, and I rarely ever get food poisoned having been to tons of restaurants all over the place. I was visiting Portland to check it out, heard great things about this place, and Elephants Deli was my first stop, but the food poisoning put me out for 3 out of my 4 days there. I believe the culprit was the side of potato salad with my sandwich. One star because if food safety is not met, nothing else matters.

A favorite place of mine and my family's. There's a great back room with a fire place to sit in if its not booked for a party. Seating can be hard some days but the deli style ordering is awesome. So many choices, you can surely find something for everyone. And there's a great little wine bar. Oh and not to forget the espresso and the delicious breakfast options before 11 or maybe 12? Seriously a little bit of everything

Used them as a caterer for my client in Portland... The lack of communication, follow through and response; plus the failure to reply to my messages when I was in a total panic (the morning of my event after I hadn't heard confirmation within 5 days of placing my order). There was obviously a miscommunication over the phone that was never attempted to be cleared up on their end. I will take responsibility for not following up after I had not heard anything, but unfortunately my events have ended and I STILL have not received a reply to my two emails I sent to the girl with whom I placed my order. I cannot afford to have an unreliable, unresponsive, careless person taking care of my clients and I will probably never use their services again. I am sure their food is good, but I am not in Portland so I couldn't make that judgment.

Want a fantastic and strange little place. Not quite a restaurant; more like a variety gift shop that happens to have mostly food. The folks were really nice, and my "adult mac and cheese" was really great. Or did they call it "grown up" mac and cheese? This mac and cheese was naughty, but not quite that naughty to call it adult.

Best food for whatever mood you're in. Salty cravings, soups, macaroni, pickles, sweets, chardonnay, french fries, fresh sandwiches, vegan foods, Gatorade. They have it all. The best perk is the hour before closing their ala cart is half off! Prices are a little high, but the food is dangerously good. I've never been disappointed. Safe bets are the sandwiches and soups all are AMAZING.

I think that Elephant's is great. Here's why. Working in the NW/Pearl area this place is a great option for delivering some super tasty food. I have had every sandwich and salad they make, and I have never been disappointed. They are delivered on great platters that are reusable. The food looks nice when it is delivered, tastes great when it is consumed, and the staff are super easy to work with and way friendly. A lot of places will deliver food, but none compare to service that comes with Elephant's!!!

A high end kind of deli with high end clientele. It takes awhile to orient yourself inside with all of the things it offers. The small Kale Caesar Salad ($4.60) is the right portion to quench your appetite, but has an average taste. The Cowboy Cookie (oatmeal chocolate chip) is yum, yum, yum at $2!!!

After spending a lovely sunshine-filled afternoon wandering around the shops of Portland's hipstertastic Alphabet District, I was in desperate need of some R&R, a refreshing beverage and a quick bite to eat - walking in heels ain't for the faint of heart! Luckily, I stumbled upon Elephant's Delicatessen. Essentially, it functions as a deli, market, and restaurant complete with a cheese counter and an adorable counter designated for baked goodies, fresh breads, and chocolates. Oh, those pretty macaroons... ! Here you can find everything from ready made pasta, potato, whole grain, and veggie salads, various cooked lean and red meat dishes, hot and cold sandwiches, and so much more! There is literally something for everyone here. The delicatessen is very nicely-sized with amazing outdoor seating complete with umbrellas. Whether you choose to dine in or take your items to go, I highly recommend browsing the various elaborately decorated stands they have placed throughout the store. There is everything from wonderful scented candles and soaps, delicately packaged chocolate truffles and cookies, cookware, dishes and tea sets, to canned preserves. It certainly was bustling with customers but I thankfully encountered no long lines. The employees were very amiable and helpful when it came to answering any questions about their products or helping to locate various items throughout the store. After a diving into a variety of their ready-made salads, a grilled salmon steak with garlic basil aioli, and a chilled coconut water, I was certainly ready for more shopping and exploring! Thank you Elephants Delicatessen for being such a wonderful surprise and satisfying my tummy!

Best place ever! I almost died when I discovered they have a cassarole station!!! I had the stuffed musrooms with cesar as special and luckily had room left for tiramisu and macaroons too! They have great looking hams near the gift shop; service was friendly too with a smile :)

Elephants Deli is the play to go for delicious foods and drinks. There is everything from hot cooked meals, soups, hamburgers, reubens, to cold salads, shrimp, salmon. You can also have fondues, sandwiches, delicious milkshakes which are quite filling. The bartenders are awesome, never forget a face or a drink order, and usually have your drink ready before sitting down at the bar. Kelly, Eric and Clinton are the best bartenders around and can make any drink you want. All the staff in each area most definitely are awesome, friendly and extremely helpful. The only item I miss now are the garlic fries which were to die for!!!! So full of garlic, very tasty, crispy and very satisfying. BRING THEM BACK!!!!

The Voodoo Donuts of the delis. One of the tourist stops in Portland. It's cool, hip, EXPENSIVE, and their tastes alright. Just try to avoid this place on Sundays because it's packed! You'll be lucky to find an outside seat.

Elephants is an excellent, local, high-end deli. We frequent this place for easy picnic items, party finger food, quick lunch and easy to-go dinners. I love their creamy mac and cheese, finger licking good teriyaki chicken wings, tomato orange soup, and juicy pastrami reuben sandwich. If you want all their offerings, their NW 22nd location is the best place to try. I also love their great selection of charcuterie. Our family had 3 different types of salami (from Salumi in Seattle, Fra'Mai in SF and another from Vermont), olives, salad, cheese and bread as dinner and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If you have a Shop Local card, you get a free cookie for spending at least $10. Or show up after 6:30 PM for half off ready-made food.

One of my favorite lunch places in PDX. There are so many choices for eating. Can be very crowded at times. They also have a great selection of wine and other things for the house/kitchen.

I discovered Elephants late in the game.... as in, just about to move away late... My favorite memories were of purchasing sandwiches, soup, and takeaway pastry delights and driving up Vista to Washington Park, where myself and friends could chill on the lawns (where the free summer concerts are held) by the side of the Rose Garden, and partake in all of the sunshine and peace. Elephants serves up quality delicatessen items, and were it not for my gf who used to live on NW Barnes and came here often as well, I would have passed it by, without noticing. Great breakfast options for early AM, and made-to-order as well as hot food. Love the layout; bustling crowd! PS make a fun day, shop at the Goodwill that's next door, grab some great deals, get some food, and take yourself to the park already!

Best soup ever! On our first visit (about four years ago), the person working at the soup area told us to try mixing Mama Leon's with Tomato orange soup. We tried it and have gotten that same thing every time since. Their other food is also great, Pizza have a good flavor in the sauce, the sliders are very filling, and the deserts are delicious. The prices are average and maybe a little to the higher side, but for the quality of food that you get it is worth every penny. Great value.

Just stopped in for lunch and had the same experience I seem to have every time I eat here. The food is always great and the selection is fantastic. It's the employees I don't get. They are not one bit welcoming or even polite. It's so strange. They don't seem to interact with the customers at all. Doesn't keep me from visiting but it's very odd.

Elephants does a great job at serving many different roles in the Portlanders' life. It is great as a coffee shop or a restaurant for a casual meal. Another aspect where Elephants excels are those times in life when you are hosting a meal or want to eat at home, but you really, really do not want to cook. Elephants was made for those moments. They have all kind of delicious dishes, like ready to bake dishes, soups and delicious desserts. Their to-go lasagna bolognese is my favorite. The delicatessen area itself has all kinds of things, which are useful for gifts or to bring to a party. Recommended!

I LOVE ELEPHANT DELI! It is a little overwhelming when you first enter, since the place has everything! From a grill, to a deli station, to a wood burning oven, to a pastry section...and more, you won't be disappointed. I consider this restaurant my second kitchen...but better :) My favorites are the fritatta in the morning, and the black bean burger for lunch or dinner. They also have a great olive and cheese selection - yum! Love the environment and the friendly staff.

This place is full of options! That can be a very good thing when feeling hungry but indecisive- it certainly pulls you in to a space full of tasty treats, great main dishes, and interesting combinations- but it's also a bit overwhelming. There is a case of refrigerated salads, sandwiches, and combo deals, as well as a hot line, soup and sandwich station, and desserts. Drinks are along the wall and there is wine and other merchandise throughout. I have always struggled a bit to decide on a rounded, reasonably sized meal (the phrase 'one of each has also crossed my mind') but despite this struggle, in the end I've always been satisfied, if a bit all over the place, with my selections. The beauty and the curse of what ultimately feels like an upscale grocery store (Dean and Deluca?) meets a fancy cafeteria (high end private school?) meal. Choice is the key here. Try to be decisive. The food is good, the selections are endless, and the seating in the back room with the fireplace delightful. I've been here a few time while visiting friend and have nothing but fond memories-after I settled on my food. Pricing is per piece and comes together at the register, also a bit cumbersome at times...but totally worth it in the end. On my last trip I was exposed to the croque-madame sandwich. Pretty amazing find. Even coupled with ambivalence, I was wildly satisfied once this beauty hit my taste buds. Seems to be the trend.

You have to be a grade-A ass clown to not like this place. I've been going to Elephants since...umm...1997? Me love it long time. Their soups, sandwiches, cookies, cheeses, coffee, EVERYTHING is FABULOUS. It looks delish and IS delish. Granted, I go broke everytime I'm in there, but hell, it is f*cking WORTH IT. Favourites: Soup - tomato orange. Sounds weird, but tastes like heaven Sandwich - turkey havarti. Bc everything is better w/ havarti. Cookie - elephant shaped shortbread, NOT iced. I ask you, who doesn't want to eat shortbread shaped like a mini elephant? Prepared foods - ALL OF THEM (unless it's made w/ pork, lamb, or livers of some sort). See how easy that was? Just a small sample of what Lily will eat there. I'll eat just about anything from there. Wanna test that theory out? Take me to lunch there and you'll see.

Elephant's Deli is one of those great places that has been consistently good for years, and thus, is unfairly often overlooked. The food at Elephant's is always amazingly delicious, and when you consider the quality of the ingredients and prep, a value. The Garden Room at the NW location is good for lunch meetings, the front area is great for people watching. If I know an event is going to be catered by Elephant's I will fast all day before it. So good. Also, they are very committed to sustainable, local etc... which I love.

A little confusing initially. Just head over to whatever area has the food you want, order, you get a ticket, then head over the cashier to pay, and then they call your name when your food's ready, eat, and clean up after yourself. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the elephants burger. The pulled pork was tangy, sweet, tender, and it went well with the cole slaw (though my wife thought it was a little bland) and toasted buttered bun. Burger came on the same bun. Bun was freaking delicious, crispy... buttery... and even a little crumbly, and the meat was flavorful, juicy, and well cooked. Reasonable prices. Spent about 16, no beverages. It was still busy even at 3p. We tried eating here before closer to 12p, and there was nowhere to park or sit.

An absolutely delightful delicatessen... one of my favorite establishments in Portland. Inside is like a high-end cafeteria with different stations - Mexican food, asian food, a bakery, a grill, a deli-style area, panini station... the foods rotate out and the menu seems to change on the regular. They also have gourmet market items - baking supplies, cooking supplies, fun obscure drink products, etc. The staff are SO friendly. Both times I've come here I've been complimented on both my beard and my shirts. The staff engage you in conversation and want to make sure you're happy with what you're getting. They glow. The food is absolutely delicious. I could eat here every day and not get tired of it, as there are so many options (and they are so good!). Favorites include the potatos au gratin, the lemon salmon, and the seared marinated brussel sprouts. There are lots of wheat-free items here, but they are correct in not claiming gluten-free ness, as there are no gluten-free designated sections of the kitchens and the like. Unfortunately, I had a bit of gluten exposure, but that was a risk I knew I was taking. PLEASE come here and give it a try!

The "main" Elephants location on NW 22nd, just north of Burnside, is cramped and crazy busy, but the food rocks. If you are looking for hot or cold sandwiches, soup, wood-fired pizza, deli favorites or other hot meals, you will find great selections at Elephants. They also have pre-made sandwiches, as well as many drinks, snacks and trinkets spread around the store. Many people take their food out, but there are dine-in seats in the front of the store and in back rooms, assuming they are not hosting parties. The atmosphere during busy times is frenetic and newcomers find it a bit intimidating. If you haven't been there, just take a deep breath, get in line at one of the food stations and grab a menu so you're ready to order. The cashiers are up front, as are the drink glasses, silverware and napkins (should you be eating in). It's not that bad once you figure it out...and the food is worth the stress.

Friend and I tried this place and ended up getting a cheese sampler with bread for about $9 for 3 people which was awesome. The workers were very helpful. We were also able to try some almonds and hazelnuts before deciding to buy the spicy and sweet hazelnuts. They have really good cheeses. :)

This place is overwhelming. A lot of people, a lot of stimulation, but so much to choose from ready made or fresh. Bake goods galore, and did I mention just chaos. Good mac and cheese good salad with rogue blue and apples. Pricey. I kind of want to try their made to order food like a burger and fries. Of course, I dined ala Google plus and 20 bucks and 5 cents fed us both lunch. He had a sandwich and soup. Always a plus when the pooches are welcome outside and there is a H20 bowl.

Pros: free parking, lots of spaces! Wheelchair access, friendly staff, tasty food. Cons: A bit pricey, and you have to carry your food and drink to your table. They do not serve you or bus your table. I ordered a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich, and had a can of Diet Cherry Coke. The food was tasty, but unremarkable. One thing I liked was that the grilled cheese sandwich was made in a sandwich press without buttering or greasing the bread! WIN if you're trying to cut down on fats.......but then why would you order a grilled cheese sandwich? LOL Anyway... The sandwiches are made-to-order, and are ready quickly, which I appreciated. The deli is spacious and full of great-looking (and pricey) decor that you can buy, along with a big variety of hot/cold deli items. They also have a bar seating area that looks pretty interesting. People seemed to be enjoying their food as they dined inside or on the outdoor seating. My only complaint is that the seating was not comfortable. It wasn't unbearable, but I left sooner than I wanted to because of that. One other thing to note: A customer was accessing the self-serve water and noticed a stale odor in the stacked water glasses. When she brought this to the attention of the cashier, the cashier said that she couldn't do anything about it, but that the lady could speak to the manager, and the cashier just pointed at the guy and said, "he's right over there." In my opinion, the cashier should have walked the lady over to the manager and introduced her to him, with a brief explanation of the problem...but she didn't . She just kept saying, "talk to the manager". After 3 attempts by the customer to talk to the cashier, she did walk over and start talking to the manager about it. I didn't hear what was said, but she left after a couple of minutes, and he went back to flirting with the young lady sitting at the bar. I stayed for another 5 minutes to see if the drinking glasses would be removed for rewashing, but no-one even checked to see if the complaint was valid. That did concern me, so I'm not sure if I will return. I think they should have brought out fresh glasses right away, or AT LEAST they should have done a random sniff-test to see if they could detect an odor.

Threw a baby shower for 11 lovely ladies in the garden room and I was amazed at how good the service and food were. Plus they packaged up all of our leftovers so we could snack on for days! - Butternut squash soup was amazing - Frittata was amazing - don't forget the carrot cake either!

Great quick food would make this venue a 4-5 but words "thank you" seem to be lost by staff during busy times. Feel like a number amidst the masses. Beware if you happen to get in an employee's way...stink eye surely to follow. Customer service training lacking last few times I have visited any of these locations.

I hate to have to take a star away, but Elephants replaced the halibut in my favorite sandwich with mahi-mahi. Same replacement for their fish & chips. The mahi-mahi is fresh. It's good. It's not halibut. This sandwich is now somewhat ordinary where it used to be spectacular. It's not that I'll stop going to Elephants, but I'll go less often, with much less enthusiasm, and I'll find something else to order. I asked "why, oh why?" They said halibut prices have spiked and they already had to raise prices once and didn't want to have to do that to "you guys" again. Sounds very valid. Doesn't change my heartbreak. Oh yeah, and their slaw went downhill too. They're lucky I'm only knocking one star...

One of our favorite restaurants in Portland, and especially around the stadium and Hotel deluxe! The variety of options is simply amazing, making it a great family choice since everybody can get whatever they want. And despite the range of items, everything we've tried has been tasty and fresh. Nice seating inside and especially outside when the weather is nice. A great choice any time of day.

Frequented many times always loved the food and atmosphere, though sometimes it's hard to find seating/parking. Food to go, hot food there, picking up some good food or wine? This is the place for you. Lots of choices, good food, healthy food, gluten free, vegetarian, meat lovers, whatever your pleasure.

So this may seem funny, but I actually got married at Elephant's Delicatessen last year and it was wonderful. In addition to their great deli (it is really so much more than that), they have a great Garden Room in the back. It has a fire place, tile floor, and lanterns hanging above. My husband and I decided (after way too much discussion/planning) to have a very small wedding with only our immediate family and a few friends (approximately 17 people). We were able to have the ceremony and the reception in the same room and it was exactly what we wanted. Elephant's did all the catering of the food for dinner and our cake, along with the beverages. They also did the flowers on the table. They were a joy to work with and so communicative that it was fairly unstressful for us. We are also commenting how our wedding was exactly what we wanted (beautiful, but little fuss) and Elephant's was so wonderful at making that happen. The room hold up to 55 people for a seated affair, so I would definitely recommend it for anyone who needs a space for a small, intimate party.

Oh my gosh, where have I been, under a rock? I find it hard to believe I've been in Portland for over 9 years yet I had never been to Elephants! i was overwhelmed when I first walked in but, in a good way! There's a smiling face behind every counter that's eager to help. Everything looked and smelled amazing, don't get me started on the desserts, I had to walk away because I knew if I made a purchase I would end up buying at least one of everything, just to try it. Anyway, I will make Elephants a regular stop from now on..

I have been going to Elephants Deli for years, since they were at their Theile Square location. The atmosphere there is pleasant. It's nice and something of a novelty, to me at least, to have a place where one can get quality food in a casual setting Their food is well-made from fine ingredients. The soups and salads are consistently fresh and delicious. The baked goods are uniformly perfect-looking and taste good. They do cook-to-order sandwiches and other foods at their grill. It's so good to have a sandwich that is fresh and custom-made. The food will likely be priced higher than most first time visitors will expect. The service I have received at the deli over the years has ranged from just okay to really awful. Some of the employees I have come into contact with over the years really need to get over themselves. No one there has ever gone out of her/his way for me. On at least one occasion I left without what I came for and swore I would never go back again. I didn't go back for a couple of years. One thing that other reviews don't seem to mention is that Elephants Deli sells some charming serving ware, gifts, cards, candles, et c. I have bought some really great birthday cards there over the years. The server ware they carry is very nice stuff; but the price on some of it is eye-popping.

My sister took me for my first visit today! :) First I wanna give a star just for the parking! What a treat to have an actual parking lot on 23rd, yay!!! The food??? This aint your mana's deli! Selection is a plenty and tasty! I had the ratatouille square & penne w/Tom sauce. All very good. I actually stayed for awhile just to browse all the yummy goodness through the lunch rush and ended up buying some Moroccan orzo pasta salad, sugar snap peas, crab cakes and cheese bread stix and several samplings of cookies. I also found a cardamom spiced pound cake!!! Cardamom is one of my fave spices and this did not disappoint. My hubby loved the carpet picnic I'd prepared for Him. Food choices are endless! Prepared hot & cold foods. Sandwiches, salads and they even have a grill! Lots of baked goods from sweets to breads. I could go on and on. There is something for everyone and if u can't find something, u don't deserve to eat. Staff was very nice. Indoor, outdoor seating. Great place for foodies, gift ideas, afternoon dates! I will dif take my husband in the very near future.

Wow. REALLY good food, REALLY cool building, REALLY nice staff. I won't ramble on like I have in other reviews, Elephant's is awesome, fries are some of the best in town, pizza is amazing, burgers are fabulous. Eat here.

This place was amazing and overwhelming at the same time. I had never been and spent a good 20 minutes just looking at all of the cases/choices! Pizza bar, Sandwich bar, hot entree bar and a salad bar! The food was delicious and served quickly by smiling staff. A couple cons: I found the prices a little high. My sweet tea was $1.00 more than I am used to, as well as my meal costing more than expected. Not many options for vegan/vegetarians. Yes they are there, but you have to look for them hiding in between fried chicken and hamburgers. Would go back if it was closer to my neighborhood. Homemade bread...yum!

To quote another patron circling the perimeter like a shark (swimming countercurrent to the flow we were caught in): eating here is somewhat labor-intensive. I must have elbow-bashed half a dozen other patrons. At least there were no food casualties, despite how sharp I keep my elbows. I would turn from a helpful counter-person, and BAM! Stabilize the tray, apologize profusely, get swept along with the tide of seat-seekers... I got the wood-fired oven-roasted duck, served over arugula: duck was pleasantly gamey, but a bit over-salted. Arugula was California arugula; good, but inferior to Oregon arugula (trust me on this). Alas, I shall have to wait until June for Oregon arugula. Mini HoHo cake for dessert? Yes, please. Childhood memory gone upscale. Obscenely enjoyable. Drinks were still lovely, once we were able to squeeze up to the miniscule bar. And the deli itself was filled with so many delectable distractions... I was pretty much terminally attention-dispersed (AKA spaced out) the whole visit. At the end of the evening, the cheese and meat guru helped me sample a luscious, unctuous ripe cheese, which I immediately fell in love with (Epoisses, how shall I count the ways?); she also gave me a generous sliver of Jamon Iberico, which really WAS as nutty and rich and distinctive as the gourmets say. It was also more than $80/lb. I swallowed hard and said "thank you for the taste, but none for me today."

Always a great way to get delicatessen style food, sides and main courses to go, or to eat-in. It's a great place, good hot food, great stuff you take to a party to impress your host, or get on a frugal night-out. I typically go hot foods here, and treat myself when it's happy hour because it can be a bit pricey for hot food. The food is good however. I don't like the yelling for customers. It's obnoxious and pretty loud. This is not a place for quiet sit-down meals, but that yelling can be pretty obnoxious.

The big Elephant's Deli in the Alphabet District is fantastic. Although their other locations have more than sufficient variety, this has so much to look around, observe as well as eat. There are tables both inside and outside. Various employees help out with making sandwiches as well as managing the bakery. I went here in search of an inexpensive snack, having been for a good burger a long time ago. The celery soda was $1.25 and the baguette was $0.55, for a grand total of $1.80. There was only one employee managing the line however, and the place does crowd on Friday night. For whatever flaws they have, I got to eat a snack that was a bit fancy, with a glamorous price tag. My bread was noteworthy. Head on over to Elephant's if you want to be delighted.

Really nice lunch spot with a lot of choices! We had the BLT, tomato orange soup, croque monsieur, a milkshake and the mac and cheese. All of it was delicious! I shopped a bit in the gift market area while waiting for our order but found it too pricey to make a purchase although there were very unique offerings.

This is one of those places where you just want to say yes to everything! Totally cliched, but there really is something for everyone here. If you're visiting PDX with a large group, I recommend stopping by here if no one can agree on what to eat. They've got sandwiches, salads, hot dishes, cold dishes, candies, a bakery, a bar, and of course, deli meats and cheeses. I was really craving comfort food, so I kept it simple and just had grilled cheese with tomato orange soup. The soup is a crowd favourite (on Yelp, at least) and it didn't disappoint. While I was waiting for my order, there was a representative from One Fork Farm giving samples of their caramels, and well, he hooked me. I ended up buying their coffee rum horchata caramels, made with spirits from local distillery Eastside Distilling. So Portland. They also have cutesy home decor items like candles and fancy soaps, but not all of them are locally produced. Still, they're in good taste. My parents and I liked this place so much we made sure to stop by their outlet at PDX airport before saying goodbye to Portland.

I am a long time fan of Elephants, all the way back to when they only had one store in the Uptown strip mall. I still love their happy hour and try and stock up for a few days when I get to it, If you dont know after 630 (earlier on Sundays) they mark all their breads, giant cookies, some salads and usually most of the hot case off. Usually half off. It is a good place to go with other people because everyone can get what they want in the portion sizes they want, or go with one of the meals. I have never gone with anyone who was unhappy with their meal. They have both inside and outside seating. You can also get it to go. It is great for picknicks or meals when you don't want to cook. Tip if you are going to have company they have ready to bake meals in the freezer. Besides prepared foods they have a nice cheese selection, snacks, and some stuff for your home (nice things but NOT cheap.) The service is usually good, It can be uneven. I think this is because they seem to have a high turnover of employees.

I can't speak for some of their hot-prepared dishes, but the bagel I bought on a recent trip to Portland was sad sad sad. A whole wheat bagel, barely toasted and an uneven and lackluster application of cream cheese that took 10 minutes to make on a slow morning. And the to-go packaging was just plain wasteful! A full-on plastic container with lid and some sad lettuce garnish. For a damn bagel. What a shame!

For an out-a-towner, I have found this place to be a gem. Two months ago when I was here on business I stumbled upon the deli express and loved the soups and service. Today a local told me about the dine-in location, and I am so grateful they did! Decided on the fresh mahi mahi tacos and a side of fries with malt vinegar. DELICIOUS! At first I couldn't figure out the process of ordering and sitting, but an employee quickly came to the rescue and have me a tour of the restaurant. Impeccable service and delicious food. Definitely a place I will eat at again any time I'm in town for business.

Came here for lunch on Friday. Very very popular. The layout is slightly intimidating for a newcomer - it's not very clear where you go to order and there are maybe 5 or 6 different stations each with their own separate menu. Although there are plenty of healthy options I was feeling like bad food so I ordered the sweet potato tots, chicken strips and garlic fries. Everything was delicious. Chicken strips came in an awesome coating which was crispy but not dry. Garlic fries weren't too garlicky - just enough. Sweet potato tots came with a nice dip. Service was fast (prdered and had my food within 15 minutes) and friendly. Portions HUGE (could have easily fed two as you can see from the photo). With a large soda it came to 14 dollars - bargain! In a restaurant I would have paid double. Would definitely recommend - maybe browse the menu before you arrive as its a bit crazy inside the deli you don't want to be hesitating!

Known for everything local and made from scratch every day, you're off to a good start once you walk through the front door. Fresh! Inside it's a walk in the park. Walk around this large inside food court with your eyeballs bulging out at the grill, woodfired Pizza, prepared hot and cold foods. All looks so delicious. The decision is tuff! We walked around and around. Finally, we selected on the lasagna, shepherds pie in a cast-iron skillet cooked in the woodfired oven and some really really good baked beans. Then there is baked cookies and pies. Go shopping for cheese, meat, olives, sandwiches, salads, wine another grocery odds and ends to go. Sit in the big open room or find a cozy side room. Liked it a lot and will definitely come back.

Elephants Delicatessen (ED) has to be one of my favorite spots in Portland for one main reason: garlic French fries. But really, this deli features lots of delicious entrees and trust me, you'll have a hard time picking just ONE to order. My two friends and I went to ED on a rainy Saturday afternoon for a late lunch, and since we didn't have breakfast that much earlier, we just shared a cup of soup and an order of fish & chips. This was my first visit to ED and my friend said that their garlic fries are a must-have! While my friends ordered, I was able to walk around and check out the baked goods. There are basically different counters--pizzas, hot sandwiches, etc.--where you can order and then they call your number when your order's ready. The café also has interior seating (which can get crowded on rainy days), as well as a counter area. There was so much to take in at this deli that it was almost overwhelming. If I were hungrier, I probably would have had a much harder time deciding on an entrée, but since I was still full from breakfast, I was content just to share whatever my friends ordered. I was tempted to get one of the delicious-looking peanut butter cookies from the bakery--those large cookies were only $2 each--but decided to save those for my next trip. ED even features fresh cheeses, meats and breads you can buy around the store as well ... so neat! The café was pretty crowded and claustrophobic when we went; I'm not sure if it's always like this or if it was like this because we went on a Saturday ... during prime lunch hour ... AND it was raining outside. Here's what we ordered, as well as what I want to try next time: "Mahi-Mahi Fish & Chips": I love a good fish & chips, and the ED version doesn't disappoint. It comes with tartar sauce and lemon, as well as those famous garlic fries (not sure if you have to pay a slight fee to upgrade to garlic fries, but it's worth it!!). The entrée came with three pieces of fish and a generous amount of garlic fries. The fish was delicious -- soft, flavorful interior and perfectly fried and crispy exterior. But those fries ... man! I only dream of those garlic fries. I normally don't like skinny, thin, shoestring fries, but for these garlic fries, I'll make an exception. They came sufficiently covered in garlic butter and fresh parsley, and these guys don't skimp when it comes to seasoning. I got garlic in EVERY single bite. These fries are probably some of the best I've ever had ... period. I can't wait to order them again on my next trip to ED. "Garlic Fries": GET THIS. Even if you don't like French fries, you're sure to love these shoestring beauties that are tossed in garlic butter and fresh parsley. Even if your dish doesn't come with these fries, order them anyway ... you won't be disappointed. "Mama Leone's": My friend says this is her favorite soup--and one of the best she's ever tasted--so she got a cup for me to try some. It entails a creamy Italian chicken soup with tomato, spinach and herbs. I normally don't like things with tomatoes, but I didn't mind it in this soup because the tomato flavor isn't overwhelming. I prefer creamy soups over liquidy soups, so this was really yummy. I also really liked the spinach and herbs mixed in ... definitely a good choice on a cold day. "Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with side of Fries": I love buffalo chicken anything (strips, sandwich, pizza, etc.) so I would love to try this sando that comes with those addictive garlic fries. It includes chicken breast, Frank's RedHot sauce, tomato, onion, lettuce and blue cheese dressing on focaccia. I would just order my sandwich sans the tomato and onion, but everything else sounds phenomenal. "Mahi-Mahi Fish Sandwich with fries and a pickle spear": If I felt like getting the fish & chips in sandwich version, this is what I would order. This entrée features grilled mahi-mahi, lettuce, Cuban dressing and coleslaw on a sesame seed bun. I would just get my sando sans the coleslaw, but I'm especially interested to see what that Cuban dressing tastes like. "Croque Monsieur": I've had "Croque Monsieur" from different eateries, but I'm interested in trying the version at ED. It includes ham, Gruyère, Dijon and sour cream on English muffin bread. I may ask for the sour cream on the side, but the rest of the components sound yummy. "Croque Madame": Fried eggs in a sandwich make everything better, so if I want some eggs in my sando, I would probably opt for this version. It includes ham, Gruyère, a hard-boiled egg, Dijon and sour cream on English muffin bread. It's basically JUST like the "Croque Monsieur" ... but with a hard-boiled egg, which is sure to result in a savorier sandwich. "Chicken Pot Pie": I love chicken pot pie and it's an entrée that can't be found on many restaurant menus, so I definitely want to try the ED version one day. It includes chicken, carrots, fennel, celery, peas, potatoes, onion and creamy herb sauce, and it's topped with a homemade biscuit.

This place is a great. You can't really go wrong stopping here if you're unsure of what you want for lunch or dinner. When I first walked in, I'll admit I was pretty confused. But there are stations where you can place orders for certain items, i.e. you order pizza at one counter, you order burgers at another, and sandwiches at yet another. In addition, there is also a market inside, where they have fresh prepared foods, like a deli counter would. And there's also a limited selection of gourmet groceries. In other words, there's a lot to choose from. I've had the pizza here and it's decent, but not amazing. That being said, it's only $10 for a pizza, so it's hard to complain. Their Portlandia burger is *awesome* but I guess it was a special for April and it's gone now. I hope they bring it back because it's the best veggie burger I've had in Portland. I've gotten cold sandwiches and soups from the refrigerated section and they were all very good. Honestly, I haven't gotten anything bad her yet and I've been here several times. What's also nice is that there is off street parking available, and there is a whole separate dining area, in addition to the seating inside the market + outside, which means there is plenty of space too. My only real complaint is some of the prepared food you can buy off the shelves is overpriced. A small container of guacamole is $7.50. At Whole Foods, that same size container would be about $5. They sell good quality stuff but the price really reflects that -- like their Indian lentil soup is great, but it's $9 for a quart, which is just a little high.

I am so glad this deli is so close to where I live! Elephants is a step above most delis and is full of interesting, fresh foods and great prepared dishes. The bottled beer collection and wine options are good as well. There are also lots of little gift ideas scattered over the store. The store and cafe area are very clean and the employees are friendly and helpful. Although Elephants definitely does not give a bar vibe- they have a great happy hour from 3-6 every day! It's so nice when places keep happy hour on the weekend. Micros are only $3.50 and they don't just have the same old taps you see everywhere else. There are also some refreshing mixed drinks options. The cafe is a bit busy but it is a good place to sit and eat something good with your beer. Try some of the cheese plates- they are prepared with care and have great presentation.

Friends & I were visiting Portland and someone suggested for us to come here for some good lunch eats. At first walking through, it was a tad confusing since everyone was hustling & bustling and it was quite busy! But once we figured out their system I found the place to be quite charming. Like a cute & high end neighborhood deli/market :) I ordered the turkey avocado sandwich and it was really good! I enjoyed it a lot and it tasted really fresh. My friends ordered some Shepherd and pot pies and they said it was pretty tasty too. 4 stars because my sandwich maker guy was pretty rude to me when I asked where I should order & how exactly things worked.....

This place is so cool. I can't wait to go back and shop around some more. I got a tuna salad sandwich and the tomato orange soup. The tuna sandwich was good. Lots of tuna, which I loveeee. And the soup was incredible! Probably one of the best I've ever had. So much flavor to it. I'll for sure be back!

I love everything about this place. I love the fact that you can take 8 people here and everyone will find something they like, no matter their restrictions or allergies. I love their soups, hot food sections, cold food sections, meat & cheeses and their fish and chips. I love their little barista corner. I love the back area full of beautiful trinkets; candles, cook books, stationary and dishes. I love their little Italy wall with local pastas, sauces and wines. They also have jams and spices, oils and vinegars. I love their daily hh from 3-6. Lastly, I love that they decorate for every holiday.

This place is SO Portland. Confusing and off-putting but when you're done you'll be glad that you visited. We were totally confused when we came in, looking for a host or a waiter or something. It turns out that this is a cafeteria-type set up. You go to the various areas of the Deli, the grill, casserole display, salad station, sweet station, etc and order your food and take it up to a cashier. The food that I got was great and very well priced. A friend and I each ordered high piled plates and a bottle of wine and the price was much less than I was expecting. The next time I visit Portland, I'm definitely coming here and clearing my evening for more beer and wine.

I had no time to eat before we left Oakland for Portland, so by the time we arrived at 2:00 p.m. (PDT), I was starvin' marvin. The clerk at our hotel recommended Elephant Delicatessen - he said it was so great, you could hardly call it a delicatessen at all. But you know I needed to know if they served beer, or we were going to have a problem. (They do--whew!) ED is quite gourmet. In fact, ED has just about anything and everything your little heart could desire. Charcuterie? Yes. Soup? Yes. Fish tacos? Yes. Sandwiches? Check. Hot bar? Yeppers. Beer and wine bar? Check (importantly). ED even has a refreshing selection of craft cocktails, if you like that sort of thing. I ordered half of a grilled cheese with cheddar, provolone, spinach and tomato and a cup of Mama Leone's soup. The sandwich sounds naughty, but it was actually fresh and delicious, as it was made with very little butter. The soup was also delicious, albeit a little thin, with tomato, garlic, chicken and cream, among other things. I bet that soup would be phenomenal reheated the next day. My boyfriend ordered fish 'n' chips. That was a sweet order--the fish was lightly battered and flavorful. The french fries are super thin, salty and yummy. My boyfriend ordered aioli and ranch with them (a good choice). You know we ordered a couple of Pamplemousse Citrus IPAs, because we wanted to get our vacation started off on the right foot. The best thing about ED, however, is the service. Everyone at ED was so friendly and helpful. We got some things to take back to the room, and the cashier was pretty helpful - he had many suggestions for us. The ladies at the deli case really hooked us up - letting us try a bunch of different items. I wanted everything! Overall, ED is a great lunch spot with a lot of nice extras. Oh yeah, the goat cheese and pistachio spread is pretty bitchin with French bread. You're going to want that. That is all.

This place was more than I could have asked for! The food is phenomenal, and I love the variety. I'm a foodie so it worked out nicely that I was able to try many different items. Don't let the layout be too overwhelming!! The shopping area is very classy, and was enjoyable to browse while we waited for my husband's food. We also really enjoyed the patio to dine in the perfect Portland weather!

I love Elephant's! This place has something for everyone... hot food, cold salads, desserts, drinks, etc. Amazing concoctions in casserole dishes, like au gratin potatoes that I devour despite the caloric intake. Elephant's is a great place to meet up with friends or to have a casual business meeting, because everyone can select exactly what they want to eat or drink from countless options. I also love the store part of Elephant's. It's excellently curated with household items, chocolates, teas, coffee, and other pretty and tasty items. The reason for deducting a star: Some things are very spendy, and my experience with a catering order was mixed - some things were amazing, and it was delivered as promised, but there were previously-undisclosed charges for things like plastic platters, some of the sandwich bread was soggy, and the hummus was mediocre and went mostly uneaten.

This place made me want to move to Portland. I would be in here all the time if I lived in the area. It is a cute deli with all kinds of great food items and cute little things to look at. I could be there all day. On top of that they have happy hour! I have to give a shout out to Ayanna who made my visit the best. I wanted to order a sandwich for our upcoming picnic and noticed that there wasn't any vegetarian sandwiches offered. Being the "selective vegetarian" on yelp, I was definitely disappointed. One of my biggest pet peeves is places not having veggie options. Ayanna immediately stepped up and said she would make me a veggie sandwich of her own creation and said she loved making vegetarian food. She made the best sandwich ever! It was on rye bread with a gruyere, chive and fig spread that she made and was packed full of yummy veggies. It was sooooooooo good!!! I think people who step up like that and offer things that are not on the menu to make a customer happy are amazing. I hope that Elephants Deli will eventually offer more veggie options because Ayanna is obviously gifted! We also got the greek orzo salad which was yummy but a bit too oniony for me. My two other friends really liked their sandwiches too but they were meaty :). Great place!

OMG, how could a simple grilled cheese sandwhich be so good? Insanely good at any price - but this was on Happy Hour for $4.50. It's a sin. They take all the odd ends and small pieces left over from thier awesome cheese counter, grate and blend it all up for super complex and intense, mouth watering grilled cheese flavor. A secret combination between the slices. The bread was grilled to perfection and crunchy on the outside. Maybe a sour dough - unsure. THEN, served with a shot of tomato and orange soup - also delightful especially when dipped (and surprisingly refreshing). This is a must have. It may only be available during happy hour. :/ Had his for late lunch yesterday and I might have it again today!

This place is definitely our favorite spot for breakfast in Portland! Best soups! Our favorite is the mama leone soup, ooh it's so good that we been eating the same thing for almost 3 years, every time we eat at any flying elephant location. The dips... Delicious... our favorite one is the spinach dip. This place is great, they have so many choices, including desserts. They have a nice patio, they don't have enough seating inside but there's enough seating outside for a sunny day. Prices are great. One of my favorite parts is the gift shop, I never get tired of looking at their stuff, they always have beautiful things, the food prices are good but the things in the gift shop are kind of spendy, but beautiful things for sure. They also have an espresso bar and a wine shop. This place is just great!!

Their to-go sandwiches are perfect to bring on a picnic this summer. We ordered the grilled chicken genovese and the vegan wrap and both were filling and tasty. Their prices are on the expensive side here, but its gourmet, so deal with it ;-)

My last review focused on the lack of assistance. In saying that, it's not like I need coddled but a bit of eye contact would be nice- and perhaps warm up that cool snootyness...... I returned today.. opening the door I was met with wonderful aroma of food baking, meats cooking. Fantastic music was play and a few of the small tables on the perimeter were occupied. The barista appeared to be in conversation with a patron, employees were busying about behind the hot counter and cold foods were tending to a few customers. The place had a great feel. The music is a 10! The colors and placement of goods is a 10! As I scanned the cheese offerings an employee asked if he could be of help, when I said no and thanked him he faded off. Not hovering/not gone. I ended up back in the hard goods (plates, glasses, candle holders etc) where I was chatted up by an employee. I pointed out the soup tureen topped with pewter sea shells, shrimp, crabs by Vagabond House saying what an amazing piece it was. In turn she showed me many other pieces they carry from the this company as well. In the end I walked out with four beautiful, heavy, rich, blue-green glasses and my ol favorite enchilada casserole from the take out section (it's currently in the oven). ANDDD I wasn't put off by the experience. It was quite lovely. Proof if you have a so so or off-putting experience with a place you don't go on a tangent and write them totally off. Give it some time, see what others are saying and swing back by. Difficult to fairly rate this place on the price range due to the vast assortment of goods and food options. I give it $$ to $$$. Elephants selection, in the housewares area, should be on a bridal registry! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are putting a high end food basket together- this would be a place to come.

Love this place. Cute trendy environment with a little of something for everyone. Alcohol, dinning, gift shopping, unique food shopping. This was the first place I went to when I first visited Portland and had to be my first place to come to on my second trip.

We love this place, whether for a quick bite or full meal. Take your food across to the plaza and watch the kids play in the fountain. This time, I had their (pre-packaged) smoked salmon salad, one of my favorites. In addition to the salmon and mixed greens, it has Israeli cous cous, dried cranberries for a touch of sweetness, corn kernels, and a delicious dressing. My daughter got the Mama Leone's chicken soup, which was creamy and super-flavorful. Filled with veggies, it has a rich taste and is very satisfying. My spouse had a caprese sandwich on focaccia bread--very fresh and chewy. All in all, this place serves fresh takeout food for a good value, with quality well above and beyond the typical deli.

I've already used my Templeton analogy in previous Yelp reviews, but walking into the Elephant Deli always has me singing about the veritable smorgasboard orgasboard orgasboard. The grill has never disappointed from its chicken fingers to the black bean burger and the most delicious shoestring fries. There's a sizeable array of cheeses and deli food. And whenever I stagger in for the best hangover sandwich (grilled cheese with spinach and tomato), I always find myself plied with samples of coffee blends and kombucha beer from the bartenders who want me to try new things. Most every food supplied can be sourced to a local farm or other ethical supplier, including the cheeses I've tried. The Monastery Blend coffee is particularly good, even if it's not from a monastery. (Although those options are available in the PNW.) Vegan options are limited, but the desserts aren't too bad. Breads and cookies go half off after 6:30 and it's worth getting in there to grab a baguette. Pizzas are cooked in a wood fire oven and in the back are olive oils, beers, and home decorating goods that appeal too much to my inner Taurus. Prices are a little steep, but you pay for quality and it's a short jaunt from home to have someone else take care of dinner. I wish breakfast wasn't limited to the hot trays by the bar because the grill could have some terrific options and seating is usually filled up by families. I'm still trying to find the quiet hours that are good for a visit, but for now I'm so happy to have a food paradise so close to home.

I have to be honest: you could cut the snob factor of this place with a knife. The old location at Uptown Shopping Center used to be more funky and relaxed. But that's a story for another day. My main beef with this place is that I like their sweet treats, but they close super early! I've driven by several times and been sorry to see it closed (I can handle the air of superiority just enough to run in and buy a cookie). So where do I head? Off to Zupan's up the street--they're snooty too but at least they stay open past dark! Boo for bad hours.

I've only ever had their catered food, so I can only rate them based on that service. But as you can see, I'm giving them 4 stars, and I doubt a 4 star catering establishment doesn't do a good job on their in-house a la carte food as well. I've ordered from them twice now, for coffee, breakfast pasteries/bagels and lunch sandwiches for about 60 people twice, and both times, they did a fabulous job. These guys are serious about service and good food. Their food is not amazing, or mind blowing, but you won't get any complaints. Their delivery service is early/on time and really professional. Basically, if you have a nice event you need catered with food that no one's going to complain about, Elephant's is your top choice. Also, they're pretty reasonably priced for what you're getting. Now, on to the food. I was prompted to write this review because my office building just had its annual Christmas "party" (aka cookies and hot cocoa in the lobby). The cookies were pretty delightful- tasty and adorable. Was it the best shortbread and chocolate fudgey-thingy I've ever had? Nope. But it did the job (aka feed office people holiday cookies that were not from a Fred Meyer clamshell). I also believe that Elephants' presentation efforts also help make the food taste better. Their sandwich platters are pretty decent. I've had the turkey sandwich, the roast beef, and the veggie, and they were all good. Again, it was nothing that's going to blow your mind, but all the ingredients were fresh, and the sauces on the sandwiches were creative enough. For example, the horse radish on the roast beef sandwich had a bit of a bite, and the turkey sandwich had some pesto in the mayo. Like I said, tasty, but not super exciting. One of these days, I'll have to eat at one of the Elephant's establishments. But for now, I'm just sticking to their office catering services.

This place is chaotic during the lunch hour. There is seating at the bar, small 2 person tables near the front and then community tables. Order food at the little side delis and pay in the middle. There is a lot to choose from. My Reuben sandwich was delicious which had a scoop of potato salad and a pickle. Husband ordered the Margherita pizza which took a long time and after tasting it was not worth the wait. If I had a do over, I would probably just get a soup and/or salad go before the lunch crowd, if possible. The macarons were pretty good, one in particular was a flavor I had never seen - strawberry balsamic.

Huge variety of food and the food was for the most part good, however my chicken was a little burnt. Would definitely go again and order the garlic fries again though. The only downside is how hectic the environment it is.

Went there for a birthday celebration held in the Elephants Garden Room. We had an incredible salad. The appetizers, particularly the deviled eggs, were fantastic. The service was excellent. And the deserts were so good, we ate them all and had none to take home. The store / deli out front has terrific selection of food and drink. I got a grilled pastrami reuben to take home and enjoyed every bite, particularly the potato salad. Great party room for special events, Elephants Garden Room has a large fireplace.

We came here on a whim - this is no ordinary deli! This place is the perfect location to take anyone since the variety and quality can't be beat. We wish there was one in Seattle! We ordered a Mac and cheese, which was not too heavy or greasy. On the side we had a wedge salad and cucumber salad, with a piece of baguette. For dessert we had a slice of the best strawberry rhubarb pie we ever had. Every person we interacted with was pleasant, professional and friendly. The location is spacious and clean with anything from a drink section to bakery to deli sides to charcuterie. In the corner they sell cute notebooks and knickknacks, making this basically the perfect marriage of spathe type of places we like to check out. We will be back for sure!

Fan-cy! I lived in the NW area for a year and hit up Elephants every once in a while when I was rolling in cash. Actually, I also used a groupon as well, which was nice. I like the cheese counter, the BLT, and the bread selection. Their soups never let me down either.

We were really excited to try this place based on all of the reviews here. The atmosphere is great as is the concept. However the food isn't that great. I was expecting much better tasting food. We ordered the Mahi Mahi fish sandwich, which didn't have a lot of flavor. The fish was also pretty dry and overcooked. The Tuscan Chicken sandwich was also pretty dry. It needed a sauce to bring everything together. My kids liked the adult Mac and cheese but they thought it would be much better from looking at the menu. The chicken pot pie was pretty good but again we all expected more. I don't need to bother coming back.

Love this place! I had the Italian polenta with a Caesar salad and it was delicious and satisfying. Hubby had fish tacos and loved them. Lots of great food choices. It was crowded but we were able to find a table (12:30 on a Monday). Order at counters and get your own silverware. Great good and fun atmosphere. This is the type of place I would like to frequent; alas it it kind of far from home. That said, I will definitely be back!

I frequent this place on the regular and I love it so much I've even incorporated it into my weekly routine. Sunday for me = a plate of fritatta, side of greek orzo salad, side of brussel sprouts, cup of black coffee, and my book of the moment. I've found it to be the perfect place for me to unwind from the past week and recharge for the upcoming week. Although Elephant deli can get very busy I've always felt like the environment has been laid back. It's an easy spot to meet up with friends and family for a casual meal. On top of that, there's a huge variety of amazing food to choose from and you can never go wrong with your selection. I'll be keeping this location as one of my go-to's when I'm in the area. Pro tip: half off all bread items about an hour before closing

I don't know what it was about Elephants that I dug so hard. (Maybe it's something about the browsing of other foods that you can do there.) As usual in Portland, it was simply good food. We had sandwiches and fries, and it was delicious.

This place is pretty rad. First time experience has been phenomenal. I came with my wife and 6yr old and we were all satisfied. Plenty of food for the price but the value of the food far exceeds the cost in my opinion. Its a bit busy and confusing at first but once you get the feel of the place its a popping little place with an atmosphere full of life. I recommend the Pastrami Rubin. Crunchy, toast that didn't get soggy. Lots of tart kraut and the russian dressing is just sweet enough to bring it all together. A must if you are visiting portland.

YAY! What an adorable place to have in the community! They carry all kinds of gourmet goodies, cheese, vinegar, jam, wine, etc. And of course GOOD FOOD! :) They have a drink section, dessert section, hot dish section (pizza, soup, sandwiches) and the deli section where you can order colorful, delicious-looking prepared food. We tried their ratatouille square (omg, sooooooooo good, couldn't stop raving about it), roasted salmon with cucumber dill sauce (tender salmon went perfect with the sauce, cool, refreshing ), Greek orzo salad (very good, we listened to the recommendation!), sugar snap pea (fresh, but slightly tasteless). If I ever come back here again, I want to try their soups, seem to have great creations :D

It's been a year since my initial review. A whole year of "where are we going for lunch today"s. A year that has culminated in my lunching on Elephants for the fifth day in a row. Let me tell you why. Options. there are just so many options here (even for us vegetarians!) that it's hard to get sick of E's. plus, they do add in new/seasonal items every now and then. $$$. Yes, it's expensive, but again, if you're a veggie, it's comparable to other options in the hood. And significantly better than Subway, eh? Service. even when it's busy, it's so well staffed I never wait long. And they're all nice people. Allow me to recommend a few delightful treats. -The hand made caramels wrapped in cling wrap at the registers, best ever. -The Tomato-Orange Soup. I'll never get sick of it. -The Greek Orzo Salad. Melts in your mouth. I do avoid the made to order items because they can take awhile to make, but there's so much left to choose from...

Can't believe I've never written a review until now, I always go in here whenever I can. The place has parking, which is very important to me. They have a lot of tables to sit in, and even though there are a lot of people, when you sit down, it feels very comfortable. The food is amazing, Ive had the calamari, the tomato orange soup and the grilled tilamook cheese, and all are amazing. The servers are friendly and the coffees are always good. Prices are affordable as well. This is definitely my breakfast nook and in between meals.

Lots of fresh and unique bread. Lots of soups, cheeses, and an eclectic menu. Great ambience. They have their own bar.

My perfect Elephant's meal is a half pint of Mama Leone's Chicken soup (cream and chicken stock, with onions, tomatoes, and tender pieces of chicken), with a sourdough roll, a diet coke, and whatever candy they have at the check out counter. Last night I opted for a little foil wrapped piece of dark chocolate, but next time, I am going to go for one of the caramel squares wrapped in wax paper. The new location really seems like they are trying to keep people there to eat, with a happy hour, bar tender, and 1/2 price hot entrees after six PM. One of my friends last night went that route, and had apricot glazed chicken, potatoes gratin, and a side salad for about five dollars. They also have ample seating, and staff who pays attention to keeping it bussed. Elephants does not fit into my budget as a grocery store, but it is perfect for an easy dinner with friends.

Fabulous cured meat and cheese selection. My favorite pastrami reuben pretty much anywhere. If I make one stop when I'm in Portland its Elephants.

I go here probably at least twice a week for a few reasons... 1) It's between my work and my wife's. 2) It's free parking 3) Probably most important: The food is really good! I pick up lunch for us quite a bit from here and always try to get different things, which isn't hard, considering the selection! You can get anything from ready to go wrapped sandwhiches, to special order hot/cold sandwhiches, hot casseroles (lasagna), burgers, fish & chips, soups, pork cutlets, polenta, salads and milk shakes. They also have a reasonably sized bakery counter w/cakes, cookies and brownies. Plus there's fresh bread and a cheese/dried meat selection to go with almost any wine. The counter people are really nice and helpful. The bartenders/baristas are knowledgeable and friendly. Even the people who take your money (cashiers, not thieves) will hit you w/a smile. We've also had really good luck coming for a light dinner or to pick up dessert for a party. One of these days we'll go for happy hour and have some drinks (they have a bar!). Okay, I think I've lost my train of thought... and my point. I guess the point is, this place is great, not cheap, and you should go here.

It's a bit snooty, but it's in nw, so that's to be expected. I went there saturday afternoon for lunch. It was super crowded and hard to find a seat but the food was good. I had a panini and tomato soup. The soup was especially good. I also got a ding dong cake to go which was awesome and very reasonably priced. I noticed that there was a happy hour drink menu but the drinks were expensive. I don't think I'll be checking that out.

We stopped by Elephant's again today after visiting Washington Park and it was just as delicious! I got the three salad deal for $7.95 and everything was so fantastic. For the three salads I tried the caprese salad which had a nice balance of pasta, tomato, and mozzarella, one of the Greek pasta salads that was quite good and not overloaded with dressing, and the egg salad. I have yet to try the egg salad, I couldn't finish everything! I also got a tomato, basil, mozzarella sandwich on a french roll that was super fresh. What I liked most about the sandwich was how with every bite you had fresh mozzarella, the sweetness of fresh basil, roasted red peppers which added a nice kick, and then this other sweetness that I couldn't quite place. That combined with the crusty outside of the french roll paired with the soft inside made for an all around killer sandwich. My husband got two different turkey sandwiches as they were 50% off. He loved the one that he tried, everything was quite fresh and flavorful. I love Elephant's, I have never had a miss from there yet! The place was hopping with all sorts of folks and everyone eating outside was perfectly happy, appeared to be loving their food. We had fun here. Plus, the 50% off sandwiches made my husband happy although he still cringed when he heard how much we spent! But, we have more than enough food left for another meal or two so, whatever...it is worth it. How can you go wrong with fresh local high quality food???? update.......several hours later........the egg salad??? OMG......fabulous! and my husband LOVED the chipotle turkey sandwich. elephants is my new favorite place......for sure!

A lil on the spendy side but the food is delicious. Customer service there isn't great. On the snobby side. I go there for lunch since I work nearby. I'm used to poor customer service but that doesn't stop me from eating here! =o)

If I could give it an extra star for carrying the new "juice boxes for grown-ups" single-serve wines, I would. Heaven for the dash-and-go, keep it simple, food enthusiast. Ingredients are easy to identify even before they add idiot-proof symbols for vegan, organic, vegetarian, and so on. The fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, sun dried tomato, on a fresh baguette sandwich is a new fav for this fan of easy delicious protein. Fresh roasted root vegetable medley would make my mother proud of me, and who can complain about everything going half price right before dinnertime? An excellent location for meeting friends of all dietary inclinations; even the dog can get a drink at the outside seating. Eat in, assemble a picnic, take home a full hearty meal, grab a snack, select a hostess gift, or a present for a kitchen enthusiast. Top it off with great service at even the busiest times, and you've got a fast solution for dinner with the family tonight as well

I order food from Elephant's all the time for work and we have never had a bad meal. Their employees are always nice and attentive. The food always arrives on time and is always presented beautifully. The prices may be high for some but you are definitely paying quality!

My sweet little elephant, I love you. What an awesome spot for lunch to grab some fresh, yummy sandwiches. Everything always tastes great, looks great, and I'm treated great when I'm in there. I give this place an elephant sized thumbs up.

Food goes on sale once it nears closing...heh ehe heh. The guys that work here are so very hot... were it LA I would swear that they were all gay. But being that it was Portland. I go for the delicious shrimp salad and tasty scalloped potatoes, I linger to flirt with all the hot boys.... I wonder if they will let me intern there for the summer....

Mama Leone seems to have fallen on hard times since I last purchased her chicken soup. Only one piece of poultry in the entire quart. The broth was delicious as usual, but eight dollars for just broth did leave a bitter taste in my mouth. The rest of the food I have sampled has been alright, but considering the prices, I want to leave with more of a skip in my step.

The layout is awkward, the store crowded, and I've never seen, gathered in one contained area, so many casually well dressed blond women who can't speak quietly about their nice homes and nice cars and nice children. However, the cheese selection is amazing (they had lots of Cypress Grove cheeses, I was tempted to buy them all but had no way to keep them cold til I got home), there are lots of tasty gourmet snacks, and my Reuben sandwich was heavy handed on the dressing but otherwise good. Also, very good potato salad. The service is cheerful, although almost borders on that kind of snarky cheerfulness, like when you say, "Thanks, have a good day," and the person says, "No, THANK YOU and YOU have a VERY good DAY." Is that snarky or just vehemently happy? I don't know, I choose to be an optimist and think they were enamored with my shade of lip gloss and couldn't help but wish me well. I live nowhere near this place so I wont be going back for a casual bagel, but if I was meeting somebody in the area and wanted a quickie, of the food type, I would come here again. Reuben sandwich, size HUGE, with potato salad and pickle, and a medium cup of coffee: 11 bucks and 5 cents. Not cheap but not bank breaking either.

Berry pie/cobbler. Couldn't tell since it was so messy. Doughy and bland and chewy berries...Preeetty sure they used frozen berries to make the pie. Lemon bar was delicious minus the strange odor to the powdered sugar. Yummy Stumptown and Sleepy Monk coffee. Looks like there's a bunch of random goodies. Not very satisfying overall. Will try it again since everything deserves a second chance. Plus some of their hot foods displayed in casserole pans looked really good. Everyone was very nice and made recommendations. Good spot to pick up lunch and hang out with a book and coffee.

On my last day in Portland I was on my way back to California when we decided to eat breakfast before we jumped on the 5. I saw Elephant Deli and stopped. I'm so glad we did! This place is amazing. My son and I split a ham & cheese croissant (huge!) and a plate of the best polenta (very cheesy). It was perfect! The coffee is by Stumptown, which I love. Great place to not only eat, but people watch and shop for those friends or family with 'discerning taste'. I have recommended ED to those living in Portland and those visiting.

Love elephants deli -- but was in the food section for take out -- the woman from the register was called to help me -- she did not wash her hands or put on gloves - she then picked up the plastic containers with her thumb in it and proceeded to put in the grilled veggies in that container -- she also pick my other item up with utensils but put it in plastic that had again her fingers holding the plastic -- I thought- ok I'm not going to die from a couple of germs from money and credit cards -- so I didn't say anything -- then she went directly back to the register and she waited on me -- it was like the universe wanted me to correct this ( smile)-- at that point I had to say something to her about the food code -- anyone that works with food knows you have to wash your hands or wear gloves going from place to place in a restaurant-- -- she said she used utensils !!??!!?-- so I left it at that -- love this place but I will speak up next time --

You totally have to come to this one if you are eating at the Elephant...they have the best deli area, awesome dips that are guaranteed to drive you crazy!! I think this is my new favorite place in Portland! This place is a hidden gem in the middle of the Alphabet District. When you walk in, you are just overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle of people looking at the different foods in the heated or refrigerated cases and just the wide variety of foods being offered. The best part about this place is that you can ask for a sample of anything you see! I love free samples!! One thing not to miss is the happy hour. The signature cocktails were only $5.50 and they have a small food menu at about $3.50 a plate. We ordered the calamari and citrus margarita and kellyante (rum, fresh squeezed citrus fruits with pineapple and a splash of pomegranate juice). The first thing that came to mind when I tried the drinks and the calamari was "this is so fresh!" And if you get a certain bartender, you get samples of different cheeses and wine while you are sitting at the bar =)

Wanted to make sure and note that the Ratatouille is amazing here! They threw it in the wooden oven for me for about 15 minutes, and it came out piping hot in a cast iron pan. Beautiful blend of various fresh vegetables, layered in between mozzarella cheese...basically turned into a lighter version of vegetable lasagna (no noodles). Highly recommended!

Good deli - but you're going to pay for it. We like this place. They have good food and good service. I tried their ruben and it was a very good one. The fries and calamari was good too, but expensive. There's not much room inside to eat - at least the part where the deli is. We haven't tried any of their takeout or deli stuff. We just ordered food and ate it there.

Love everything about this place. Small Bistro feel, lots of selections for the fussy eaters. In restaurant eating (though clearly it is intended for shopping & take away). Decent parking! not sure I'd call it a Deli though...maybe that's why the 4*s I've had the Tuscan chicken sandwich, wild mushroom soup, apricot chicken, Edemame salad (eff you spellchecker), chicken pot pie, croissants, cookies, petite fours, a bottle of wine, diet cherry coke (the only place I've this found 'delicacy' btw).

  • Abby W.

They have really yummy food and coffee drinks here. Great for breakfast or lunch. There is an area to sit inside or outside. Apparently they have a happy hour too and looked like they have a good selection of imbibements but we were only there early in the day... Everyone was really helpful & friendly overall. Noticed a big difference in the weekend and weekday crowd, was much more relaxed on the weekend for dining in.

I can't resist their overpriced, amazingly good soups. Especially their tomato orange soup. It's litterally the best soup you will ever eat.

Nothing beats lunch at Elephants. Delish food and so much good stuff to choose from. Seating is scarce...prices to me are fair - you're getting great food! BUSY and it's sometimes cumbersome getting to your seat with a tray of food and lots of people packed in the place, but once you sit down....Heaven! The pizza is so good, as is the wild mushroom soup!

We use them all the time for our corporate catering events. Amazingly life altering Tomato Orange Soup!!!!

  • April R.

I usually go to their Lake Oswego outpost, Flying Elephants, since it's in the same corporate park where I work (the shame!). Definitely expensive, but considering that my non-driving lunch options are limited, I'd rather pay $6.25 for a good sandwich here than $4.50 for the crappy sandwich I would get in the lunch place in my building. But - my whole reason for writing this is to emphasis their Mama Leone's Chicken Soup. This is some of the tastiest, best chicken soup I've ever had. I had a minor addiction to it for a good six weeks. There is NOTHING better on a cold winter's day when you're feeling sick & you're stuck at work. If you go here (& are a meat-eater), it is essential that you try it.

All things Good to Eat & Drink. Whatta place to find picnic specialties, dinner at home, road trip provisions, or stay and sip a latte and enjoy a warm breakfast. If you are a foodie - you already know about this place. Seating is limited, the communal table usually has a spot to settle in at. and then there is the small, well chosen Tiny Treasures section. Lovely, unusual gifts or linens to peruse and covet. Always something to pick up and take home to a dear one or for your dear self. This is a must stop for us when we visit Portland. Sometimes we just stop in to check it out. But hard to leave without some goodie or treasure.

My review is for their friendly peeps ( great staff) and amazing drinks. I am very picky when it comes to my cocktails, very! Kelly and Steve are the best at making my favorite drinks even better, margarita, etc. Elephants is a fabulous place to sit and enjoy your afternoon beverage. At 5 PM they have a fabulous happy hour.

The new Elephant's location is really very nice, with a European flair echoing around the black and white tiled floor. There are delicious treats in the glass display cases and they have a good hot food selection, plus tables to eat at. The fish and chips here were ok, but a little on the spendy side.

We hosted a brunch in their beautiful Garden Room. So much beautiful sunlight, gorgeous lanterns from the high ceiling in various colors, the fireplace aglow...but the BEST part was the Event Manager (Carol Sawyer), who helped us plan the event, gave us great ideas and then we just sat back and let her do her magic. The food was delicious, the buffet table and the coffee/juice/tea table were always replenished seamlessly. The floral arrangements on the tables were magnificent. The linens were colorful (our choice) and we couldn't have asked for a better experience from start to finish! We highly recommend this place, not only for the amazing deli (retail) but for the private party room and the service! Outstanding in every way!!!!

Sometimes I miss the old Elephants, but this space is much bigger. Although, I'm not gonna lie, I still miss Il Fornaio (three years later). My only request is that they bring back the summertime veggie sandwich. It was so good, and really as a self proclaimed semi-veggie, I can only eat so many egg salad and tomato basil sandwiches before I want to scream. However, the peach scones are delicious, as are their lemon bars, pizzas, and my favorite: nutted wild rice.

The food was amazing, the black bean burger was flavorful and didn't disappoint. The garlic fries added a delicious side to the burger. The caprese panini was flowing with cheese and made a nice compliment to there fresh soups.

Pros: delicious food, lots to choose from, can sample before you buy Cons: expensive!!! Kind of like going to Whole Foods for lunch, but pricier and more seating options.

I love you Elephant Deli. You are such a happy place. I have eaten everything from the mahi mahi sandwich and bean burger to the tuna salad sandwich and the by the pound stuff. All of the food I had was excellent. But, what makes this place even more spectacular is the amazing selection of quality wine and that you can browse the candles and fun candy in addition to having an amazing dining experience.

    (5)

A little on the expensive side, but the quality is certainly there. Tons and tons of options - it's kinda hard to stay focused on what to order. Great staff and nice setting.

  • Jamila C.

Yum yum yum! Elephants Delicatessan might be pricey but it's totally worth it. Their deli sandwiches are really good and you know it's the quality that's pushing the price up. Also, I gave into their desserts recently and have to say their brownies are delish. However, if you decide to get chips or a soda with your sandwich, buy it elsewhere because you can get those a lot cheaper.

  • Angela B.

Elephant's Deli is a treat for the eyes and the belly! Step into their new space on 21st and for a moment you are whisked away to a quaint, European market. Sample one of the dishes behind the glass case and your mouth will water. They have an amazing array of hot and cold entrees and sides, as well as soups, sandwiches and a variety of desserts. The prices are steep, but Elephant's is all about quality and presentation...and of course you are paying for the brand name. This is a great spot to assemble a picnic. Washington Park is a short walk from the deli, so grab some yummy grub to-go and dine alfresco at one of the most beautiful parks in Portland.

  • Seamus M.

This is the best deli in Portland, in fact I would say, it is truly the only deli in Portland. I was in Whole Foods and asked the woman at the deli counter, do you have any pancetta? She looked at me like I just asked for filet of bald eagle or something equally as rare. And if you want copa or some unique salami... Forget about it... So it is off to Elephant's, now their pastrami is not up to standards, so we knocked off a star but if you need some good cured meats, this is your source.

  • Courtney D.

Elephants Deli good but pricey I never went to the old Elephants Delicatessen, so can't say whether the new one is as good. But I can tell you that I love their stuff. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. Elephants Deli is the perfect place to stop in after work and pick up some gourmet items for dinner. You can order a pizza, a sandwich or a variety of specialty meats and salads. I salivated just looking at all the choices. Then I came across the desserts and wondered how I'd ever choose. I love their egg salad, which is always fresh and tastes great. I haven't tried their hot items, but people tell me that their pizza is pretty good. I've also gotten their chocolate mousse and cookies and never been disappointed. But the problem is, even if I only get a few items, I never spend less than $20. It's just too expensive for what you get. Its new location is a prime spot in Northwest Portland, and I honestly think business would flourish if they cut the prices a bit. Tip: Parking is a nightmare in their tiny lot, so park on the street or at Fred Meyer a few blocks down.

I went here for a nice sunny lunch today and we dined al fresco. We had the enchilada, egg salad, chicken salad, the chicken tortilla casserole and some mac and cheese. Sadly.. it was just mediocre.. I was underwhelmed. Mac and cheese, fail... not enough cheesey-ness and sauce, I've had better at a grocery store deli. The enchilada casserole was bland and the tortilla casserole.. bleh.. it was alright. I would never order it again. The egg salad was pretty effin good though I'll give them that. Prices were extremely reasonable. The desserts looked tempting but I didn't get a chance to try. The staff here was really sweet and extremely friendly. Dining outside with the sun made it enjoyable.

This place is crazy busy, but worth the chaos. My kids love it because of all of the options. Stay away from the prepackaged sandwiches. Order fresh. The soups are great and the sliders are some of best I have had in Portland. We have ordered from their catering side for work lunches numerous times. Not impressed at all and we no longer use them. I understand it is completely independent from the store location.

  • Ali P.

I mean, wow. Yes, everything is pricey, but oh man is the food good! Plus, they had a ton of French imports! I hadn't seen some of the stuff they were selling since my cousin in Marseille took us shopping at some markets in France a year ago. I'd heard everyone raving about this place, and I trusted their opinions, but it wasn't until I actually stepped inside that I was truly impressed. A true gem for Portland!

if i lived or worked near this place i think i'd be 50 lbs heavier!!! no joke. everytime i go here, i get wayyy to much food BUT i always finish every little morsel. i will usually leave with something to-go too! people are great, you can sample food to your heart's content and for good quality food, it's really reasonable. go there NOW. oh and where else can you get a beer with your deli-style food?

I am Yuppie, Hear Me Roar! If words like brioche, arugala and aioli turn you on, then whip out that Louis Vutton wallet and ready yourself for some upper-middle-class noshing goodness. Thank you Portland for giving us another reason to feel all warm & fuzzy about the joys of disposable income.

The prepared foods are consistently good, though definitely pricy. Well-curated selection of homegoods. Bonus points for the guy working the deli case today with the blue tape on his arm. Helpful, nice, and I officially have a crush on him!

A wide selection will provide anyone with something tasty for lunch (or other meals from the look of the menu). I tried the sliders and some wonderful tortilla soup and could not have been happier with them. If I worked by this place it would become a regular place to enjoy.

When I first moved to Portland in 1991 I found Elephants in my neighborhood (formerly just off 23rd St). My husband and I both worked long hours and having a place to pick up "real food" for a simple healthy dinner was a real time saver. In those days it was a one choice option. Today they are still saving me time and serving my dinner with a wide variety of options. We can each have what we are craving from appetizer to dessert and much more. It is also a terrific place to create the fare for a last minute dinner party. Every gormet thing you can think of is in the freezer or refrigerator counters. Finish it off with beautiful desserts. (Did I mention they have beautiful desserts??). Drop off for lunch. Share a table with strangers (better known as friends not yet met) or bring your own friend for a spot in the sun. Just try it. You may find you never have to cook again! Btw....having a large affair....try their catering.

I have given a 4 star rating ONLY for the food. They make a great grilled halibut sandwich on a brioche bun, fantastic soups, great variety of fresh salads. We have had many of their desserts and cookies and enjoyed them all. I can only give 1 star for service though...it is not always consistent. I have had numerous mistakes with simple sandwiches at the deli counter. On our last visit there, a sandwich I ordered for my toddler (asked for ham cheese with mayo) was made with horseradish sauce. My son was crying and in pain. He still talks about it to this day every time we drive by the place! Other times, I will find that they left something off, such as tomato, but it will be clearly marked on my ticket. A bit annoying.Otherwise, it is a really lovely and lively place to have a nice lunch.

VERY, very overpriced. Unbelivable. The food however, is amazing, and the atmosphere is also fab. I would go here everyday if I was a millionaire, but that isn't the case, so I will save it for special occassions.

There is something about Elephants Deli that is comforting. Perhaps its because their best items, in my opinion, are comfort foods. All the sandwiches are great. I would especially recommend the tuna melt, its my favorite. Pair that sandwich with a bowl of their tomato orange soup and you've got yourself a warm, comforting, delicious lunch on a cold fall or winter day. Resist the urge to stick with just one favorite, as I did for far too often, because all the breads, grilled options, pizzas, and seasonal dishes are usually fantastic. And after you're done eating, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to something sweet. All their desserts, cookies, pastries, etc. are great.

This is a top notch deli. It's an experience to browse all their items. I wanted to eat up the entire place. Good stuff. If I lived nearby, I'd go every day.

so many choices at this deli! Pros: -fresh fresh on the grill -gourmet pizza cooked fresh in the brick oven -soups are delicious -room for groups is in the back Cons -desserts need to be improved. I had a cherry pie and it was so so. Wish I could of had it a la mode. -service was a little slow on the pizza. gf had to wait over 20 mins since they only cook 1 pizza at a time. -wish there were more tables for groups in the front so you could watch the chefs at work

Finally made it to Elephants last weekend to have dinner before a Timbers match. I already had Elephants on my list of Portland restaurants to try but when they ran a Groupon ($7 for $15 worth of food) back in April, I made sure to take advantage of the offer. Since the restaurant is self-serve, we first went inside to the bar to order our beers and decide what we wanted to eat. They only had 3-4 taps featuring local beers (mostly IPAs) and Pilsner Urquell but had a wider selection of bottles as well as plenty of wines by the bottle or glass. The menu offers a good selection of sandwiches, salads, and other finger foods, plus there are lots of choices at the takeout counter. I was leaning towards the mahi mahi sandwich or the pulled pork, but when I asked the bartender what he thought, he said they had fish tacos (not on the menu) which were very good. So I got those and my boyfriend got the reuben with potato salad. The bartender told us to go ahead and take our drinks to the patio (it was sunny so we wanted to sit outside) and he would bring the food. In about 15 minutes he delivered it as promised. Note that you have to get your own drinks, tap water, napkins & silverware. My fish tacos came three to the order, served on slightly crisped tortillas filled with cabbage/slaw and with mango salsa on the side. I also asked for the spicy aardvark sauce on the side. Everything was fresh & delicious and I loved the added oomph of the aardvark sauce even if it did make my nose run. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's reuben and it was also very tasty; the perfect combination of crisp dark bread, juicy pastrami, sauerkraut, cheese & sauce. I'm glad we finally made it to Elephants and would probably drop by here more often if we lived in the neighborhood. Reasonable (but not cheap) prices for good food, a nice patio, and friendly service. Note that as others have mentioned, this place is popular with families and we were surrounded by multiple children under the age of 5. Also, animals are welcome on the patio and it seemed like everyone brought their dogs.

This is my go-to lunch spot in Portland and perfect to take a persnickety eater to because if they can't find something to eat here, they must be an alien that doesn't eat. In other words, the selection at Elephant's is excellent. Showcasing Elephant's excellent selections are multiple stations including sandwiches, wood fired pizzas, a heated deli case including such deliciousness as enchiladas, and my fav, the tomato tart, the soup station, salad station and the specials station (as if this all wasn't special enough already). As if this station business wasn't enough, they have a desert case, a cheese counter, an olive bar, and a cold deli selection ready to rival anyone's. Speaking about rivaling, their cold beverage section is ready to do battle with Nature's or Whole Food's and includes all sorts of Kombucha, fizzy water and Izzie fabulousness. Basically, Elephant's rocks and even has event space you can rent out. That, combined with the cute boutique filled with enough hostess and birthday present goodness to keep all of your friends happy, earns them one, two, three, four and FIVE stars =) Keep it coming Elephants!

Sunday evening, 5:30. Me and the GF off to see the Swifts show. Thought we'd grab a picnic at the deli. Error! Me: Potatoes Au Gratin: giant slices of unevenly cooked spuds with some artificial creamy gack. Edible, but only because I was starving and everything else was crap (see the following). Ate barely half. Unfried Chicken: Dry, overcooked. Barely edible. Not pleasant. Ate half. Macaroni Salad: More cheese cubes than macaroni. Bland, mayonnaise substitute "dressing". Little detectable seasoning. Yuck. Ate three bites and had to quit. Marinated Shrimp: Oh what was I thinking (impulse buy, hunger induced) - those weird translucent, flavorless, rubbery shrimp, soaked in something that was seriously repulsive. I LOVE shrimp. I couldn't eat ONE of these. Inedible garbage (for $18.95 a pound!). Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie: Big. OK, but too sugary for my tastes. Ate half. The GF: Lasagna: Arf! A dog might eat it, but neither of us could. She ate maybe half. I tried a bite. Easily the worst "lasagna" I've ever had - I'd prefer Stouffers! Salad: ok. Same Cookie: She ate hers. Maybe I should have gone for the ruben. Or maybe if we had more time we could have waited for a pizza (which did look pretty good coming out of the oven). But this trip was a mega-ripoff! If we hadn't gotten the "end of the day Sunday" discounts, I'd have gone back and picketed the place! I won't say I won't go back, but I sure wouldn't eat any of this crap again.

I want a sandwich! I didn't understand this place at first but I quickly caught on. You start at one end and run through grabbing as much as you can before you get to the registers. Don't be afraid to bounce off the other patrons who dart across in front of you. Its all part of the fun! Elephants, you make a mean sandwich baby. Much love.

I would highly recommend this place. It has a very large variety and you don't see an extended deli anymore. I had the cheeseburger with some health drink. The prices were reasonable and I walked to this place. I am unclear about the parking situation. There are chairs outside and the place has a nice view of the city. If I do come back to Portland again I will try to come here.

I really enjoy lunch here...breakfast is not too shabby either. Kayla, the barista/bar tender is awesome. However, if you are in a rush, don't go to the deli. Very, very slow. Also, location is a bit chaotic...parking, lines, etc

The best place to stop for a quick bite. I love their seared Ahi tuna salad with white beans and arugula. I drive from Hillsboro for lunch to get it. They also have an amazing falafel wrap when you can get your hands on one. Other delicious items include their black bean burger, garlic french fries, Mahi Mahi fish tacos or sandwich (depending on the season), pastrami reuben, calamari, and roasted brussels sprouts.

Love Elephant's Deli. Great selection of prepared foods and deli items. Also have a very nice small wine section. Also much appreciated is the ample off-street parking. Employees have always been helpful and friendly as well. Now for two of my favorite things at Elephants: The Mama Leone soup (creamy, dreamy, tomato, chicken, hint of curry?) one of the best soups I've ever had. Second, they make an excellent potato salad -- not usually something I even order, but this is very good in an old-school way. Overall very solid deli, but not cheap -- again, you get what you pay for.

Got me some of this soup I've been hearing a lot about. it was creamy, but not too rich, and a delicious lunch item. The chicken was silky and toothsome, and the vegetables were great. The rest of the items looked delicious, but I had to save room for some cart food! Like the seasonality of their selection along with a friendly staff!

When I first heard of Elephant Delicatessen (before reading other yelp reviews or what not) I thought it would be your typical deli selling soups, salads and sandwiches. Which was partly true until I came to visit one afternoon for lunch. I was totally wrong when I stepped into Elephant Delicatessen. A vast array of foods displayed from hot prepared foods, soups, salads, dessert and drinks. It's amazing just walking in. Yes it's a bit on the pricey side but you know you are PAYING FOR QUALITY when you are at Elephant's. Not only are they making these foods from scratch, but they are using organic and local foods, which is a plus in my book. I was a bit lost for a moment while I was absorbing the blending aromas of the hot foods, or was I just in awe of the tons of options and didn't know where to start? Maybe it was because I didn't know how to order or where to go? It was a good thing I guess in the end. I was stunned and in awe by home made goodness - how delicious everything looked and I wanted to try everything. But I didn't let my hunger get the best of me. So I toured around the place, allowing my eyes and gut to find what was appetizing at the moment and I settled on their Chicken and Black Bean Enchilada Casserole and a side of Caesar Salad. This was dead on delicious and I wanted more. I also got a couple French Macaroons (Passion Fruit, Pistachio and Strawberry to go; $1 each!) My meal was $7.50 and my total ended up being around $11-12 because I also purchased a drink. Their dessert section was impeccable. I wanted to try the Tiramisu but I think I'll save that for my next adventure there. They also have free water by the cashier, so help yourself. At Elephant's you will definitely receive high end helpfulness. The warmth and friendliness from the staff - cashiers to bartenders to people working behind the hot food scenes. Everyone there is friendly and helpful. Not only do they have hot foods and salads all made for to-go. But in their frozen / refrigerated section, if you wish to bring home their homemade goodness and store it at home, you can! Pretty much everything that they serve in the deli is available in their frozen and refrigerated section - soups (around $10), shepherd's pie ($17) and dips ($8.25) are just to name a few. Parking is available on their parking lot, but it can get quite crowded and you may end up having to park on the street which isn't too bad since it'll just be 30 minutes. Overall my experience at Elephants Delicatessen is hands down wonderful. Healthy, yummy, home made goodness, you can't go wrong with anything here. I will be back for more!

I'm a fat pig. Something about Elephant Deli makes me feel like I am eating on a diet even though I am not. That's the problem with being a giant, boar-faced, slob like me. I could go in to this place and get a salad or soup or some kind of healthy black bean burger deal....but I can't. I get the sandwiches, breads, pizza and all the other stuff that has helped jump start the growth of my fatty man hooters. Kudos to you Elephant Deli! Your food is great and the service is splendid.

I was totally overwhelmed upon entering the establishment. I don't even know where to begin. So. many. choices. When in doubt, I always go with a burger. I did not break this tradition and I don't regret it! It was huge and drippy, tender and meaty, lots of vegetables, toasty bun, thin crisssspy fries on the side. Pricey but not worth losing a star over. The atmosphere, the food, the service... Just go, already.

When I worked in Portland, we used these guys very frequently for catering and they always did a really good job. Everything was always on time and orders were correct, they were real good about taking our orders even when we were kinda pressed for time on orders. Food wasn't always 'sublime', but really nice. Expected and occasional turn-offs, such as perhaps a dish wasn't to some peoples liking (hard to fault Elephants for that really) or maybe a side was just too 'sauced', or things like that but generally great. Their storefront is really cool as well.

Yes, they have expensive food but if you pick out the right stuff in the deli you can get a full meal fo $5-6.

I feel like this is the one of those places you have to take someone for a light lunch when they visit Portland. Of course there is the world famous orange soup which I will soon attempt to recreate and hopefully not be disappointed! They have a huge selection of fresh food to choose from meats and cheeses to pizzas and salads. There is something for everyone! They look to have a pretty sweet happy hour so I'll have to come by and check it out. My only complaint is the lack of tofu and tempeh here. Kind of surprising for a place in Portland. Hope they add some items with those ingredients!

I wish we had an Elephants in Denver. This place is fantastic! I don't know if it is always packed, but it was today. And I can see why. It's as if Whole Foods, World Market and a cafeteria had some crazy three-way and its offspring had equal DNA from its parents. I got a basic turkey sandwich (which now seems like a bit of a waste, only because everything looked great) and it hit the spot. I will definitely be back before I leave!

Very nice deli. We asked them to create a cheese plate for us we could eat there and they did an amazing job for just 12 bucks!

I met a friend here for lunch. Being new to the area and really just meeting this girl for the first time only a week prior, I was not sure what to expect. She chose this place that had lots of options, which was smart on her part (although I am not picky whatsoever). I got there a little before her and I was overwhelmed with this store. It was really crowded and seemed disorganized. There was too much going on..in every direction. It was tough to make a decision and navigating through the lunch hour traffic was tough and made me anxious because I felt like I was in everyone's way... So after settling on a salad and soup, we managed to find a seat outside. I got the curry peanut soup which was ok and some sort of salad with fruit on it. Nothing spectacular, but I wasn't expecting a ton. To me, this place was like a college cafeteria and I wasn't overly impressed. Definitely lots of options, but I think it is a place you need to get comfortable in before you can figure out exactly what you want to eat.

Tomato Orange Soup. Yum. Grab a grilled cheese on the side for some happy dipping. Oh and when we were there last, told that everyday after 6:30pm cookies, fresh bread and pre-made sandwiches are half-off! Ssshh...I didn't say nothin!

I could very easily eat at Elephants every day of the week. At least I could if I were rich. It's definitely a little pricey for a deli and I've had a few less than stellar meals but all of the fantastic food I've had at Elephants over the last four years definitely outweighs the few misses I've had. I really need to learn to skip the dessert case but everything is so good. Especially the chocolate mousse and their tiramisu is one of my favorites. The cold case is always good for one of their fantastic salads (they're all good, really) or a bit of teriyaki salmon or beef poivre verte that I like to take home and heat up. My current obsession is the chicken strips with a side of garlic fries from the grill. Definitely try the garlic fries. And then there are the soups and sandwiches. The tomato orange is fantastic, but also make sure to try the cream of mushroom. It's the best I've ever had. And I've yet to find a sandwich i didn't enjoy. The caprese and croque monsieur are definitely my favorites. And now I'm making myself hungry. The only thing I've tried that I wouldn't recommend are some of the chicken dishes from the hot case with the casserole dishes. I've tried a couple of them and am underwhelmed. Also the food in those hot cases is sold for half price at the end of the day but honestly, there's usually a reason for that so it's not always worth it. Potatoes au gratin that are fantastic fresh are just gross at 7pm. If there's any left by then, which is rare.

how awesome would my work day be if the elephants deli moved on down from portland and down the street from my office? for a foodie, nothing is more fun and exciting than a deli with not only a TON of good eats and AMAZING selection, but also one that is delightful to the eyes as well! the elephants deli was an AWESOME suggestion from the travel books and per bf's awesome idea we grabbed some to-go lunches for our train ride from Portland up to Seattle... [note: this place is NO WHERE NEAR THE TRAIN STATION (don't want to mislead people thinking it is and then when they get to the amtrak it's nowhere in sight!) -- but do yourself a favor and get up to this place whether or not you're getting on a train!)

yep, it's good. We were driving back from Seattle to the Bay Area and need to eat something very tasty for the last few hours. I love a buffet kind of store ala Whole Foods where you can try several (if your a piggy like me) kinds of dishes. I had soup and a salad but the folks sitting next to me at calamari and I want badly to steal a couple of pieces ( they would have never have known) but my husband forbade it. I had a delicious soy cappuccino; not everyone gets steaming soy and they do. You'll be happy. It's crowded - that's life.

Impressing the In-laws? In the mood to splurge? Showing off Portland to a guest? New paycheck burning a hole in your pocket? Look no further than this fantastic authentic delicatessen. They are so real that they use the whole word "delicatessen". Now that is real. This place is a paradise for gourmet, fresh, unique, decadent and delicious food...for a price. Elephant's is so much more than what is on the extensive menu. Call in a picnic order, and they will have a wicker basket full to the brim with everything you could desire, including relaxing or romantic destinations within walking distance. While you're waiting for your food they will proudly and generously thrust samples your direction, and suggest wine, cheese, and dessert pairings for that overly ambitious "first-date-chef". On my recent visit I didn't save room for dessert, but shame on me. Their dessert options range from simple cookies and cheesecakes to the more delectable 'Lemon sabayon-pine nut tart with Honeyed Mascarpone Cream'...and anything with a name that long MUST be delicious. You've read the reviews - this place is spendy. One star initially down. But they more than earn that star back with service, knowledge, and quality! I immediately justified the price when I overheard the checker enthusiastically offering to help visitors plan trips to zoo concerts, beach trips, waterfront walks and outdoor excursions. They are very real here, and it shows in much more than simply the elongated form of Deli. Elephant's Delicatessen more than earns its stars, and is a great local choice for visitors.

I'm pretty sure this place is only open until 7:30 but maybe they changed their hours? Just noting. GREAT FOOD. They have everything. Everything is delicious. It's worth the slightly-more-than-average pricing, ALSO they have an amazing happy hour as well with a full bar. I highly recommend it to anyone who is in the Alphabet looking for a meal. Great service and friendly staff, too. If you don't save room for dessert... like, try to. Because whoa.

One of our favorite places to eat in Portland. Great food, great location, but what really made it stand out to us was the employees. So friendly! So helpful! Really made it a wonderful dining experience. As for the food...great. fresh. we always love the tomato Orange soup. Really good burgers, and they have a black bean burger for vegetarians. You must try the burger/ fry sauce... Yummmmm. Lots of desert options! My husband always has to get one of the home made ding dongs to-go :) If you can't tell I love this place and it is one of our regular spots! Try it!

Eating at a deli for dinner can be fun when it's extremely hot out like almost 100 degrees. I ordered a sandwich on some homemade style bread (to die for). The sandwich was good, but I also noticed over in the frig case the half priced sandwiches made up earlier in the day. Roast beef sandwich for $3 and they also had half off baked goods (if your looking for a deal). They also offer grilled food and pizza. at this location, they have free parking in the back off 22nd. The seating seemed limited, but there's always to go! I'd go back especially for the baked stuff.

Mmmm...with the cold weather lately, I've had soup on the mind. Mind you, I usually hate soup. When they ask "soup or salad" at restaurants, I always go with the greens. Elephant's is one of those rare places that carry soup that I actually like and will eat till the last drop. Tomato orange and Mama Leone's are my favorites. Pair it with a made to order sandwich and I'm set for winter. Throw in any of their cookies and I'll be your best friend. Parking here can be a pain, as with most of the area, so I normally will forgo the parking lot and park on a side street. Everything else they serve here is simply delicious and you can taste the quality. I love how you are able to peruse and look at the different cases to make up your ideal meal. Prices are a little spendy, but when I do make it here it's a real treat.

Landmark creative Portland spin on the deli tradition. This is not where you get your pastrami on rye and an egg cream, but rather where you submit your lunch appetite to the whims and chalkboard fancies of the savory din. Meatloaf? Fish & Chips? Hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, burgers, artisan salads, breads, soft, chewy desserts to die for. Just eat it, OK? Everything's good here.

The monthly wine dinners in the lovely Garden Room are not promoted except by e-mail or posted at their NW location, but they should be! If you like eating family style, ie. seated with people you might not know, and enjoy trying new wines paired with delicious dishes prepared by chef Scott Weaver at a very reasonable price, these monthly dinners should be on your radar! Pluses: cosy atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, wine and great value. Downside: parking is sometimes hard to find in their lot, or side streets, but worth the effort and wine stewart tends to talk too much, but just reflects his enthusiasm and eagerness to share information.

This place has so much to choose from. And all of it is delicious. I want to give it 5 stars so bad, but can't because I think it's a little overpriced and have been burned a couple times on the whole communal seating thing. There is not just food either, their are gifts and trinkets too. I bought the best icicle ornament here for Christmas. AND if you use your choose local card and spend over $10's you get one of their amazing cookies for free.

Most locals know this place as having the best sandwiches and cold cuts. But, there is a hidden secret of this place - house smoked lox. It's a bit pricy, but if you tasted the lox from a local supermarket, then you know the difference with Elephant Deli.

Part deli, part cafe. Pricey: $6.60 for an egg salad sandwich, $5.50 for a grilled cheese with tomato, Swiss, and spinach sandwich. Both were very good, though. The tomato-orange soup was a bit strong for me. Good by itself, though I wouldn't order it again. We also got the chicken, leek, and herb soup which was different, but good, though it was a little lacking in the amount of chicken. Also got the chocolate mousse cup, a lot for just $3. Not a big fan of bussing my own table, as I have a 9 month old baby in tow most of the time; I'm busy enough as it is with diaper bags and extra food and bottles everywhere... However, I did see some workers offer to take empty plates from patrons every once in a while. Overall, good experience, after you figure out how to order, where to pay for it, and where to pick up your plates...

Okay so it is really overpriced. With that out of the way it really is great food. I typically only get the Mama Leoni's soup and a baguette. This soup is amazing. So amazing. I want it right now. Every time I've been there it has been packed. Everything they serve there looks so delicious. Although the prices are steep it is definitely worth checking out. I almost recommend not getting the soup so then you won't know what you are missing.

Wonderful food all around. We order the bagged lunches for meetings on a regular basis and they are always delicious and dependably delivered. When I meet friends there for lunch, I almost always order the fish tacos. They never disappoint! I've also used them for catering parties. Food is always good. They have a wonderful selection of hot/cold foods, veggie/meat/gluten free options. They deliver and then pick up. Easy, dependable, and delicious!!!

I grew up in NY, so finding a gourmet deli in Portland was a truly comforting and pleasant surprise. And I first discovered Elephant's in 1996 when I moved here. Back then they had NO competition citywide. Nowadays they have an even larger selection of incredible foods on offer. If they had a larger devotion to the "local, sustainable, seasonal" belief system they would earn 5 stars!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Elephant Deli! I always have to stop by this place when i visit Portland. Its amazing in here, they have a HUGE selection of sandwiches, salads, hot foods, desserts, etc... Lets not forget the wide variety of snacks, candy and other goods as well, the list goes on and on. I'm pretty sure they have whatever your craving. The setup is pretty nice. There is little stations for everything, such as the salad and sandwich station and the hot foods station. The garlic fries here are phenomenal, I'm just gonna go ahead and say they are the best I've ever had. You just go order up our pick out whatever you like and pay at the register. There is seating in the Deli but it fills up pretty quick as sometimes it gets really busy, but you can always take things to go as well. They have an amazing dessert/ baked goods section. Don't miss out on the macarons (my favorite is apricot) or the cheese straws. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the Deli itself is very bright and clean. They have their own parking lot so parking is a breeze. Do not miss out on Elephant Deli when your in Portland!!

Oh my this was such a cute little delicatessen. I'm from Seattle and I don't think I've seen one like this. Everything there looked so good and I wished I could have gotten it all. But I actually came there for macarons. To start off, the macarons were delicious! What kinda upset me was that it was a bit smaller than I expected. I came here because I heard the macaron here was cheaper (1.75) than other macaron places around there.. Just didn't think it was that small though. I will definitely come back here again while I'm in Portland but for something other than macarons, as I will try for another macaron bakery.

There are so many options it can be overwhelming. Many things are made fresh right in front of you or options like lasagna made fresh that day. It's almost always really crowded and could almost use a better system for ordering.

I was treated so badly, with so many mistakes to our orders, a pizza that just plain never arrived, a burger without any mayo or ketchup accompanied by a tiny amount of fries, that I am not sure where to begin. They must be paying for the positive reviews for this place. It's chaotic, rude, they don't give a rat's ass about decent signage so that you don't waste 10 mins of your lunch hour in the wrong line (not that your pizza was gonna get done in less than 30 mins anyway) and the burger dude was openly hostile. I had to overhear a co-worker (while holding up the burger bun to prove there was no mayo or ketchup on it) tell him to take it down a notch, but he just snapped, "Tell them to not be so damn sensitive!" It's a case study in mismanagement and over-pricing. Funny, they think they are a hip, Whole Foods type place where you can go to work and just be your jerk self. It would probably be run better if there was a pharmacy next door. I look forward to a replacement deli in my hood. And btw, we had to cancel the pizza and leave because it never arrived.

Variety. This place is different and interesting. Much like a cafeteria/buffet style select what you want and pay for it eatery. It's kind of like when you get food at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. But actually good. I liked it. Service was good. Location was nice. Seating outside was neat. Check it out if you've got an afternoon off.

Are you on a diet? Then stay away from here. The deli has a very tempting bakery and a great variety of food that you order from various preparation areas. I had a very good fish and "chips" that were shoestring french fries and a tasty coleslaw. This is a very busy place and if you come in a group, it is wise to have one person find a table and hold it until someone else has their order. Cold drinks are in the coolers and coffee and alcohol are available from the bar. As in a true deli, there is a good selection of foods and condiments to take home or to a picnic.

Love this place. I had friends in town visiting, and I swear we ate here three times in two days. Snag fresh, grab & go sandwiches from the cooler in the back (I recommend the egg salad or vegan wrap.), a bottle of beer or wine and a couple of cookies and you're set for your next beach trip or picnic in the park. Bonus: Fresh-brewed Stumptown coffee and cold brew keep you caffeinated on the way. If you need a little weeknight comfort, try the mac and cheese. I die.

Everything about this place is amazing. They have a very impressive selection of all different kinds of foods that will please anyone. There's a deli, pizza oven, fryer, bakery espresso bar, and probably like ten other things I'm not thinking of. They also have a 'garden' seating area with a 5ft fireplace. I love elephants and I could eat here every day no matter what I'm looking for!

In many people's worlds Elephants is probably a 4 or 5 star place. In mine, it is firmly 3 stars. No more, no less. It is A-OK. Pros: Parking Lot Plenty of Friendly Staff Attractive Design Inside and Outside Seating Large Selection of prepared foods and gift items artfully displayed. Cons: Over Priced. Let me explain a bit further. Nearly everything I ordered looked better than it tasted which made me feel that everything was super over priced. You are definitely paying for the visual presentation of the food, the restaurant and the presence of nice staff prepared to assist you. I spent $28 on an array of small bites so that my friend and I could enjoy a mini backyard picnic on a lovely evening. The freshly baked bread I selected was quite tasty and priced accordingly. Sadly the rest of the items let us down. The Salmon was overcooked and the accompanying wasabi sauce was bland. The Seafood Cake (just under $5) was fine, however the sauce that was suggested as a side was not a good addition. The Curried Chicken Rice Salad was very ordinary and might have been better without the rice. There were a few more items but they were not memorable, even the dessert was just okay. Nothing was bad, and had it cost half as much I might be writing a different review.

Really pissed off they changed their frys the new ones are really bad. Other reviews talk about how great they are, however this is not the case anymore it saddens me to say that the best frys I've ever tasted have been replaced. The new frys are incredibly disappointing. So don't go expecting great frys it'll be the biggest let down of your day

In downtown Portland, this place was a surprisingly fun and tasty experience. A large variety of food and the soups were amazing. Highly recommend this.

One of my favorite places ever. A great selection of food and I have never had anything here that wasn't great. Have a cappuccino...one of the best in a town known for great coffee.

This place is greet. The deli is as a big, open deli/grill with a whine/liquor bar to boot. The food is fresh and tasty. They've got all kinds of options and when I go without any particular food in mind I always walk away with something I enjoy. Certainly a great place for a casual meal when you have a number of people who all want something different.

A nice note from the manager after my prior poor experience here was encouraging. That was nice. I have had nothing but good experiences with Elephants up to recently. And I used to work above the one downtown, and so I frequented that location often. I have to say that my return to the NW store this week (Monday 9/30 at lunchtime, to be exact) was...interesting. The same surly woman from my previous bad experience was again working the cheese/charcuterie counter area and she just does not seem interested in being friendly or in helping people (or at the very least, me). I did not even bother to try and engage her, as she seemed to glare at me even when I was just perusing the self-serve cookie/bread area. This person clearly just does not like me. Or maybe its all people. I didn't stick around to observe her behavior. Instead, I went to the soup counter. Hey, they are very friendly people over here! I tried a few things and ended buying a bowl of very good Curried Lentil soup and some bread. The people in this area and the cashier were very friendly people that encourages me to return. However, I will be getting my cheese and charcuterie items elsewhere as long as I see that woman behind the counter.

On our first visit to Portland, Elephants Deli was the first place we stepped into, and it blew us away. A friendly greeter, so many great food options (including vegetarian), and then a big beautiful room with a fireplace that we got to sit next to. This was one of the best parts of our trip, and we'll definitely want to come back.

I absolutely loved this place!! It was definitely a shock when I walked in because there was just stuff everywhere. There was a bar section, cheese section, hot food section, dessert section. There was so much stuff in such a small place but it was a good overwhelming feeling. I ordered the sliders and garlic fries and they were delicious! The sliders were a bit dry but I still enjoyed them and the garlic fries were the best fries I've ever tried! The employees were very friendly and helpful as it can be a bit confusing as to how to order and pay. You also sample the hot food!! My friend got the meatloaf, Mac and cheese, and some type of fries with Japanese toppings on it. I couldn't remember the name but everything she had was good. The calamari was also really good. Overall, I recommend this place! They also have Togo sandwiches and cheese boards etc. If you would like to enjoy some time in the sun somewhere else. Great place!

This is my go-to place for so many reasons. It's great for after work take out, easy and delicious breakfast and a perfect environment for large groups. I love bringing visiting family here because I now everyone will find something they love. My grandma ate here 5 times in one visit to Portland!! My favorite is a nice evening in the Patio room with the fireplace going and some killer fish tacos. They also make one of my favorite bean burgers. Try the pastries too. Try it all! It is consistently good. I am lucky to live just a few blocks away.

I really want to give Elephants' home base a 5. I probably would if I didn't always feel so confused by the layout of the restaurant. I do love the variety of the food. There's fancy cheeses, basic sandwiches and every appetizer in-between here. You can visit different counters to grab ready-made soups, pizzas to order and wine by the glass. There's even a little freezer section for take-and-bake at home dishes like lasagnas. The calamari is delicious, the tuna sandwiches are comforting. I will say something contrary to the tomato orange soup though, since I was definitely not a fan. Maybe I tried a bad batch, but the orange added a runaway sweetness. Try the tomato-orange-fennel soup over at the food cart Savor Soup house instead if you make your way downtown. Ultimately, the confusion I feel every time I walk into the chaotic lunch-time rush at Elephants is overwhelming, and is often what leads me to choose other establishments. By comparison, their downtown location near Nordstroms has fewer choices but feels much easier to navigate. This location also closes very early compared to many of the other restaurants in the area, and we've arrived more than a few times right after they've closed up, so I don't recommend Elephants for dinner unless you're an early eater. It can be a great choice if you know what you're looking for or to fix a specific craving, but for first-timers expect to be jostled around a bit by the crowd and more than a little confused by the system they have in place. Once you get your food and get settled though, I'm sure you'll be very content with what you've ordered and will walk away with happy bellies and hopefully fond memories.

**Vegetarians Beware!** Yesterday I ordered their vegetarian Curry-Peanut Soup. I took it to-go and ate it for lunch today. About 3/4 of the way through I took a bite and there was a piece of CHICKEN in there! Upon further investigation, I found three more pieces of chicken! NOT COOL ELEPHANTS DELICATESSEN, NOT COOL.

We came here to have dinner one night, not knowing what it was going to be like. We were a little confused when we first walked in. Basically the place is set up like a bunch of little markets. They have a place for cheese and meat, pasta, sandwiches and hamburgers, and dessert. Everyone was really nice and helpful. The sliders I got were just ok, but the garlic fries and cheese board were really good. I would love to come back here sometime.

Loved the pizza. Loved the wild rice deli dish. There were many things that looked wonderful. Only a couple that were suspect. I watched a couple of the cooks for a few minutes while I waited and liked their conscientiousness. You will have a hard time missing with all the order options.

Punishment for white privilege. Serve yourself, go to the other side of the restaurant to reheat your cold food. Totally dumb system!!!

  • Sara H.

The only reason I'm giving it two stars is the food is tasty, but the layout is the most dysfunctional I've seen in food service EVER. Also, for the price it just is not worth it. Especially as you have to be Indiana Jones to figure out the system.

5 stars for the food. Amazing Reuben, Steak Sandwich, Chicken strips and Cheeseburger. Desserts are also amazing, save room. They lose a star because for a newbie it was really hard to determine what you were supposed to do. Walking in the front door is completely overwhelming. It is busy and noisy and there isn't anyone directing traffic. Getting your food takes 4 forevers to order because you have to go to multiple counters, balance dishes and drinks as you go to pay in an extremely crowded and busy environment (at 1:30 pm on a Tuesday it was NUTS). They have all kinds of stuff you can shop for great little wine section, a charcuterie and cheese counter, a dessert counter...it looks like a great place to get fun unique things for a party....but everything is all jumbled and feels very disorganized. I am confident we would have spent more if things were organized in a more user friendly way. I know I sound whiny and the list of things I didn't like is long, but the quality of the food offsets it. It was great. We'd go back better prepared to "divide and conquer" to get drinks and food.

Coming from Hawai'i, it's always cold in Oregon so whenever I roll through Portland I make sure to stop in to Elephant's Delicatessen for their most popular chicken soup called The Elephant's cure! Packed with all the essential medicinal super herbal remedies like, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, cilantro, parsley, onions and Serrano chile! It'll help to boost your immune system and help you fight off any sort of cold! It's incredibly delicious and they have it all year round Frozen and warm in the winter. Just take it home, defrost and warm up your soul with the Elephant's Cure!

This place is amazing. All of their hot food is so good and they have a very diverse menu of items to choose from. The Tuscan Chicken sandwich is a 10/10. Their orange-tomato soup is an awesome unique spin on the classic. Only criticism I can say is the layout of the store is a bit cluttered and confusing. Also with that in mind and a ton of people in there around at noon it can be really hectic in there. Great place though..

This place is such an experience. They have cases upon cases full of meats, cheeses, salads, sides, cakes, pies and my favorite macaroons. We opted to order sliders and a reuben from the grill to pair with a warm cup of coffee and key lime pie and cookies. It was a deliciously decadent meal that I look forward to returning for. Everything was cooked to perfection and the prices were reasonable for the portions.

I think the Elephants Delicatessen is a really fun place to have lunch. They have a lot of really great items to chose from. They have different sections of the store dedicated to different types of food. You can get hot sandwiches, chicken tenders, fish and chips, hot soup, cold salads, drinks and a whole cold case dedicated to everything sugary and delicious. There is also a great section of freshly made pastas that you can take home. I would really recommend coming here for lunch, dinner or even a nice snack.

Elephants is an absolute delight to all senses. I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I am there. The food is tasty , fresh and beautifully presented. The vibe is happy. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. It is a treat to go there.

We had the breakfast burrito and the croque madame. It was super delicious! I love places like this where they have all kinds of different foods and super gourmet cheeses. If you go to the back they have an area where you can find imported sauces (simmers, jams, etc). If I lived in Portland, I'd go here to grab some good coffee and breakfast on the weekends all the time. This place reminds me of the deli section at whole foods, but at a smaller and finer scale. Love it!

Went to the Elephant's Delicatessen for the first time, for lunch, on Sunday. First of all, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was adequate parking - for a Northwest Portland eatery during their busiest. You do have to explore the place a bit to figure out what is going on. We took up seats at the counter and ordered from the menu. My husband had the Mahi-mahi fish and chips. Their fries almost covered the whole plate! They were skinny (my favorite style, and there were plenty for the 'doggie bag'). It was very, very tasty. I ordered the Pulled-pork BBQ sandwich and coleslaw (sat on a leaf of lettuce) on sesame seed bun. The pork was on a hot dish, so I scooped how much I wanted on my bun, and too the rest home. It was also very, very good! (Photos on my profile). The deli also has a wide variety of exquisite wines, cheeses, take-out food, breads, chocolates and on and on. Despite the crowd, it was a delightful experience and I recommend it.

This place was a lot of fun. It's a grill, pizza joint, deli, cheese shop, bakery, wine/beer shop, and bar all rolled into one. Once you find your way to the right counter, there seems to be lots of good stuff. I got fish tacos that were delicious, and a beer from their cold bottles section. Very friendly staff too.

Overwhelmingly awesome. Anything you want to stuff in your snack-pouch, you can probably find here. It's like the awesome snack part of Whole Foods, but so much better and not annoying. At 6ish the breads, cookies and other treats go on sale for 1/2 price! Outstanding fish and chips, excellent lasagna, superior cookies and more! Everyone who works here is awesome and everything they make is delicious! If I could, I would set up a cot in the corner and become the plumpest in Plumpland Portland!

If I ever move away from Portland this is the restaurant that I will miss the most. I love cooking so my husband and I don't eat out much. We certainly don't eat fast food. So, where to go when I don't want to cook but we need to grab a quick meal? Elephants deli! They have something for everyone! Breakfast: Yum. My favorite is the breakfast burrito with the green chilies in it. Kinda spicy but delicious. They also have these at their airport location BUT remember to stop and get it before you pass through security. Coffee: My favorite it an iced vanilla latte. Such good flavor. Unlike most restaurants that serve coffee and espresso... Elephants actually knows how to make a good coffee! Lunch/Dinner: My favorite are the chicken strips. They have a panko type crust. They changed them for a whole to a buttermilk type chicken strip and I almost cried. I actually stopped going on a regular basis until I someone told me the chicken was back to normal. It's not exactly the same, but still good! Other things from the grill that we've had are the fish tacos and my husband really like them! I don't eat seafood so can't weigh in on them. Quesadilla was huge and tasty. They also have casseroles, soups and a full ready made pastas/salad bar that is by the pound. Need something for dinner for another night? Grab a container of soup or a casserole that you can bake at home near the back. Tons of drink & desserts to choose from. We love this place!

I'm actually reviewing Elephant's downtown and their new location at John's Landing. First, the good: The downtown location is something to behold, somewhere to be seen, somewhere to get a really good sandwich (if a bit on the small side). It's beautiful, atmospheric, and a resource for anything you can't get anywhere else. The flip side of the coin is the John's Landing location. It was months overdue in opening, and expectations were high. There hasn't been such a letdown since the Hindenburg - Oh, the humanity! The place is small (seats maybe 30), and its primary focus is on the drinking-their-lunch crowd. Featuring a wine bar and a full bar, its lunch offerings reside, saran-wrapped, in an island cooler where you can buy half a sandwich for $7, including... NOTHING! Are you people KIDDING, or are you just trying to keep out the middle class? The politics are up to you, but I have a tough time supporting the one that supports the other when the other is like this.

Elephants is phenomenal, especially the NW location. I feel like I am in a classy European deli. everything they make is delicious and they have some good classic deli items. I mostly go to the Lake Oswego location for lunch but this location is my favorite. They are expensive, though and sometimes over-priced but the quality of the food is awesome.

Don't miss this place if in the area. It's such a versatile place. It has a great selection of baked goodies, plenty of different entrees in the deli, coffee/mate, seating area, and plenty of cool things in its store, both edible and not. The vegetable ratatouille dish is awesome! All of the baked things are very high quality. I've been twice, and both times I loved my experience there! It's definitely a place I'd be coming back to when in Portland!

The tomato orange soup is to die for... Went back twice for the 5 days that I was in portland. Also enjoyed their Italian sandwich bread or forgot the exact name which is basically caprese panini. My husband enjoyed everything he had. He thought the fish and chip is one of the best he had, I thought the one in LA is still better but hey I don't eat fish and chip that much...

  • Jason K.

It's full of all sort of neat little things I'd love to try if it wasn't pretty much all priced out of my range of spending. I settled on a rather smallish sandwich for seven bucks. All good ingredients on it, but light on their application. Very nice if you're into the fru-fru, but it was just a bit too "gift shop" and not enough "deli" to suit me.

Hands down one of the best places for a foodie to shop AND eat in Portland! The selection is incredible and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful. My husband and I love to spend a Saturday morning here with a terrific breakfast and the newspaper. I frequently stop in to pick up some soup, bread, and cheese to take home. You should absolutely put this place on your list of "must see/go" places in Portland...it has a kind on NY, Hamptons vibe and is an institution unto itself!

The only thing that I don't like about Elephants Deli is that I can never decide what to have! If you're getting take out, Elephants is perfect. It's set up sort of like an open air market with stations for everything you could ever want or need from sandwiches and hot entrees to soup, salad, coffee, sweet treats and more. Everything is super high quality an prepared fresh. I particularly love their black bean burgers and pulled pork and their shortbread cookies (get the ones shaped like elephants!) are the absolute bomb!!! Service is impeccable, the location can't be beat AND they have lots of parking which is rare in this neighborhood. One of my favorite spots in all of PDX.

Too hungry to make it home? There are tables for that. In a bit of a rush? There are sack lunches available for order, purchase, and delivery. Want to rest those soles and take a break? There is a full-service bar and coffee available, and quite the supply of food to taste. Be forewarned, eyes can be larger than most people's stomachs, as the colorful but enticing display appeals to the visually stimulated. Cheesecake - well I can say it was good, but like many cheesecakes I come across, it only just met the mark. It was fluffy and light in its entirety - the whipped confection with a humble cream topping. It rose to an expectation but not in excess. Was it finished? Yes, all of it was gone when it met my lips, but I desired a little something more to push it beyond ordinary. Carrot Cake Cupcake - has been one of the few cupcakes that left a good taste in my mouth. Ideally moist coupled with the standard flavors reminiscent of childhood versions. Is that cinnamon? Hmm. Nutmeg? Maybe. What is that? Crushed pistachios? Oh...how pleasant. There is something spectacularly simple in its creation that warrants buying a few. Trying to get carried away was challenging but I managed, given that I only have so much stomach to fill. Marionberry Pie - or Oregon's proud little blackberry, I should say, was a quick favorite. The crust paralleled the oil types in crispness and sprinkled with coarse sugar. Both delicious and not too sweet, it tasted as one could hope for in a berry pie. Despite the rather intimate shot of the pie's undressing, it did make it home safely, though at this point I had likely eaten much of the crust. Next time: (aside from another cupcake) I'll be sure to introduce myself to the charcuterie and cheese counter!

Friends in town and everyone wants something different for lunch or the relatives are here and they can't decide what they want? This is the perfect place. We have gone here with several groups this summer and it has worked out perfectly. Someone is starving and someone else wants just a light snack. You have to explain the purchase process but the variety of food hot and cold has never disappointed. I have had great sandwiches, fries, chicken strips. My husband has had good salads. One thing we haven't tried much are the desserts but they all look great and have a huge selection. I have to wonder if the cookies get old because the piles are huge. Something good to note is there is extra seating down the hall toward the back and the bathrooms are downstairs

A great place for lunch. Both the orange tomato soup and the wild mushroom soup are to die for. Salads and sandwiches are consistent and diverse. Good service and always reliable. Now they just need to put one in North Portland near me! Also I have the recipe for the orange tomato soup on my website (you can look it up on my profile).

One of the best places to eat in Portland. Although it's basically cafeteria style, and you pay a-la-carte for each item you get, I have never been disappointed in the quality and variety of food here. One time I got corned beef around St. Patrick's day and it was pure heaven. Another time I had an amazing African stew of some sort. I could really go on and on about this place. It's a little pricey but worth it. Elephants is Awesome!

  • Road B.

Great place. I really love the soups and grab-and-go options. Hot dish highlights include potatoes au gratin, mac and cheese, and chicken enchiladas (these are particularly good). The downside is that this place is pricey. Not sure if it's as bad as Whole Foods, but it's up there. Also, technically the grill is open until 8:30, but if you go after 7:30 there's a good chance you will be ignored, sighed at, and given wicked side-eye when you leave. But tipping is optional as they say.

Ok, this place is to die for. The fish and chips are really good. The sliders are a MUST. Most delicious little gourmet burgers you've ever had. The calamari is very good. The garlic fries are finger lickin' good. The steelhead root beer is a must have! The ambiance of the small deli makes for a cozy setting especially on a rainy Portland day.

A delicatessen it is not, least not what I'm used to. Oddly enough I did like it, just not as a deli. The Elephant is a great Gourmet Food Store. They sell unusual items such as whiskey rocks and bear bottle openers. But, as a deli, give me some chicken soup, chopped liver, even a tongue sandwich and a bucket of pickles or pickled tomatoes. The Elephant failed. Now they did have good soup. The cream of mushroom was very good. The Mama Leonie's Chicken Soup, well I wasn't to impressed, unless that's the way Mama Leone's cooked it that way. I then had the Croque Monsure Ham sandwich. It consisted of Italian Bread (was good) two slices of ham and a slice of Gruyere cheese. It was Just that. I think the word Deli just set it back for me. It's no deli. It's a gourmet food store that sells food items. Another thing I don't care for is there trash station. It's right next to the cash registrars and entrance, so when it's busy, your kind of in the weeds navigating your way there. I think I must of ordered all the wrong food as it does get crowded and the folks there appear to enjoy it. The service no complaints they were courteous and quick.

One of our favorite delis. Actually it is like a super sized deli with anything from fresh made to order food; salads; soups; awesome desserts and lots of stuff to go. You can buy jams; wines and all types of cheeses and meats there too. Plenty of seating with great service. Even have a little bar area in the corner where you can get drinks; wine and beer. Great place to have a casual dinner before a Timbers game

We stopped here on our Bikes n Bites Tour and to my surprise was amazed by the selection of breads and cheeses they have here. We tried 4 different kinds of cheese, the best one that stood out in my mind (and the only one I remember) is the spicy one that had bits of habanero in it, so good!

I thought I had redone my review already... Anyhow, the manager took the time to reach out after my bad experience and enticed me to come back and give it another go. I was really pleased with my return visit. The service was good, the food, as always, was great. Cheers to second chances!

Excellent Deli honoring the spirit of Portland's comfort/creative culinary. Through couple of visits, I've tried couple of different things; nothing failed. Everything well cooked and prepared at gourmet level. Service are prompt, efficient, and kind. Highly recommended for casual visit. I live across the street from this Elephants but have only been here about 3-4 times and only for some Stumptown coffee and the delicious scones. Seriously, their scones have converted me from a scone hater, always so dry and bland, to a scone lover. They have shown me how scones can be moist and flavorful. I've yet to try their other options, they are always so busy and it makes me overwhelmed. Their grocery area seems like the perfect place to pick up stuff for a picnic or a gift for a friend.

Before Whole Foods, New Seasons and even Fred Meyer had deli's with meals and salads, Elephants did. NY deli's are epic in their convenience and match to city life. Elephants takes it further with a giant selection of items which could never fit in NY, and that can be picniced and eaten cold, or be taken home and heated. A little hard to find, but they have a rare NW parking lot of their own. I've picniced items from here many times. They excell at casseroles with servings by the pound, and very reasonable. They also have breakfast casseroles. Elephants, Portland's best deli is old school semi slow fast food that's tasty, varied and often healthy!

Elephants has such a great variety of food, desserts, and drinks and they are all so good! I especially enjoy coming on a nice sunny day and sitting outside. My few times here, however, I've been disappointed with the portion size of the food. I was here on Sunday, and order the Stromboli. It's advertised as enough food for 2, and as one of the more expensive items on the menu at $14, my girlfriend and I expected...well...enough for both of us! What we got was the equivalent of maybe a slice and a half of pizza, cut into 8 pieces and spread around a dish of marinara. For only $11 we could have ordered a whole pizza. This confused me. I left hungry.

This place has so much to offer. Coffee to salads to cheeses to decor. Such a wide selection of tasty snacks and treats. Coffee bar is absolutely the best! The only problem is it can get a little too expensive. Not the best place to go everyday if you are on a budget, but well worth treating yourself!

They took away my chicken sandwich!!! Since I first found Elephants, I have enjoyed their food. Some is better than others, but time and time again I come back to the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich...and now its gone! I made a special trip last week to get 2 of these...The person next to me also wanted the Tuscan Chicken...we both left with only a loaf of bread. so disappointed........

This place has really good food. I don't know what else to say about it...but, on top of the great food you also get a nice store that has a ton of high-end or designer type cooking products. I don't really know how to describe the things you'll find here, but if you are looking for some gourmet ingredients...this would be a good place to check. Did I mention that they have great food? Also, there is a really nice selection of sweets. I highly recommend the Malt Balls...although they can be very tough to find and seem to disappear quickly when they are put out. Also, if you are looking for someplace to take out-of-town guests...I would recommend this place...once again, the food is great. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is laid back and cool. All in all, it is hard to go wrong here.

Wow! So very glad I do not live in Portland as I would eat at this joint every single day and weigh a million lbs! The endless options are overwhelming. You could host an entire dinner party and not make anything yourself and your guests would be amazed! Aside from the food to eat in store, there is a very unique gift shop for the best ever hostess gifts. Then there is all the meals, sides and entrees to take home and make. Wow! Ate here four days in a row and will do it again next time in town! Fresh, friendly and fab!

The store has some interesting foods, including a grill and a float/milkshake station. I had a good burger, not like a Wildwood or Slow Bar, but still good. It wouldn't be my top pick for a burger. We also shared a couple dishes like the beef enchiladas and mac & cheese. It's fun to drop in and see what they have. If it looks good, sample it. It's hit or miss. It was disappointing that the fries were the frozen variety. For the price and venue, everything should be fresh. Food can get pricey here. A lot of items are discounted in the evening, including cookies, breads, and some of the hot dishes. I like that they have Dr. Brown's sodas for $1.25.

i've been coming to elephants ever since highschool.. and it doesn't get any better than this place when it comes to lunch. i love the fact that you can choose between hot lunch (grill, panini, pizza, etc) and cold lunch (sandwiches, salads, pastas etc). their dessert section is super delish and it looks AMAZING! lets see.. i had the caprese salad.. so olive oil, 1/2 cut cherry tomatoes, julianne basil, mini mozzarella balls and little round pasta seasoned with salt and pepper. it was FREAKING AMAZINGLY delicious.. i was in heaven. i ended up only getting half a pint because i also got the caprese cold sandwich. i haven't had the sandwich yet but i've had it before and i'd say it's just mediocre in comparison to the pasta. i wish i didn't get the sandwich and got a whole pint of the pasta.. i would probably enjoy that more .. but ill work with what i have. i picked up a croquet madame and a egg salad sandwich for my friends. the egg salad sandwich was reported to be up to snuff. nice and fresh and the croquet madame was pretty dang good. i got to take a bit of it and it was SUPER tasty. the ham was nice and salty and balanced out the egg and guyuere so great. i love. i also picked up cookies which are always delicious. i did the cowboy cookie (oatmeal chocolate chip with some shredded coconut too i believe) and regular chocolate chip cookies. since i went in this morning, i knew it was fresh and my thoughts were confirmed when i went to pick up the cookies and could still feel them soft and a bit warm. i've had their french macaroons and they are awesome. the almond cookies get a nice shell on the outside while still being soft on the inside. the buttercream they use is literally melt in your mouth goodness. chocol

When we had people from out of town staying with us, they mentioned Elephant's was a well known place to check out in PDX. Whaaa??? A nationally recognized, chill deli/grocer/hot foods spot here in the city that I've never been to? That's a problem I needed to quash. Fast. So I quickly found myself here around Thanksgiving, pushing through the masses who too came schlepping in from the cold in search of high-end gourmet cheeses and other deli favorites. I love that it's smaller, well-stocked and full of quality goods. I will definitely be returning as the customer in that elephant's room.

If I had a perfect day off, I would wake up and get some coffee at elephants, hang out all morning reading one of my favorite books, sporadically leave my seat next to the fire place in the dining room to try a tasty cookie or dessert pastry, and for dinner fill a plate with everything they have to offer. I tried the Mac n cheese at the flying elephant in the park, giving it a 3thumbs up, but this time it was way better. I am seriously looking forward to the next time I can go to elephants!

A delectable and delightful journey into culinary artisanry. No, not everything is organic, not everything is biodynamic, or whatever you think of Portland Being. But is everything excellent? Yes. It is a passionate mix of euro-nyc inspired culinary delights, from their delightful little macarons, to the Piedmontese short-rib arugula sandwich special. I've come here for years any time I'm in Portland, and everything is consistently good to great. (Which conflicts with any "dieting" program other than tasteatarian) There is a certain delight in its store setup which eases product discovery in every sense of the word "discovery". You wind through narrow little paths, each path like a little carved cattle trail through an endless gifty "stuff" forest. Glittery serving spoons and bowls, rustic beeswax candles, interspersed between giant apothecary jars filled with seeded, "passionate" bagels. And then you come upon an attractive, lighted display of soda bottles... birch beers, cheerwine, dr brown's vanilla creme soda, hotlips, in all the various flavor combinations. You turn left, and can either confront the artisan honey shelf, or the cured meats and cheeses. Sometimes you'll see Briar Rose Creamery's goat cheese chocolate truffles, which are a world unto their own. Their garden room is festive, ohhh is it a garden delight, even in the dead of winter. It's a warm little getaway, festooned with big, silk, tassled chinese lanterns. There are ALWAYS kids here. The clientele doesn't seem to mind kids - which is a sharp juxtaposition to the rest of portland, which seems to shun the little two legged, fast, snot nosed buggers (their attitude, not mine) No, no, here at Elephants, people seem to embrace kids, and the feast of life in general. Which is a respite, finally, where you can just take them and your old people, too. And the kids magically "behave" because they're not itching to rebel against people who shun them. I suppose, too, having everything tasty helps.

I'm lucky to live so close to this gem. Elephants has much to offer, depending on your mood. They have great sandwiches, soups, salads, pizzas, prepared meals (chicken pot pie is amazing) and epic desserts. Many times I go in just for their delectable cookies. Tip-if you're ever going by later in the evening, they offer many dishes at half price. Great place

I've had Elephants cater our work meetings for some time now but I actually had my first trip here a few weeks ago. They have a parking lot!!! They are helpful and friendly!!! Their food is delicious!!! When I do order for a catered lunch, they never disappoint. It's always a crowd pleaser.

Sunday brunch was pretty busy. Slow to get the pizza, but it was good. The best deal in town was the Sunday brunch plate of teriyaki chicken, rice, vegetables and salad. It was enough for two. There is something there for everyone and the fact that they have been around a long time shows.

I have to 5 star Elephants Delicatessen on NW 22nd. The food and people both are AMAZING. Let me say that twice....AMAZING. I went in needing to assemble a picnic basket of sorts for a late evening event at a winery. After surveying the store I went to look at the meat and cheeses figuring that's where I would start out. Quite a bit to choose from overall and a great selection. The staff asked immediately if I needed help and told them I was in need of putting together some snacks for a picnic. Instantly they grabbed me someone that was an 'expert' in putting together these things and in a matter of no time had three awesome cheeses in hand. Then another employee was like 'hey what would you like to add next, perhaps some salami and meats?' next thing I know I am trying a plethora of amazing samples! They were also curtious in the fact that they asked my price point before moving forward. Never pushy. Just uber helpful. I believe Josh was his name. This guy will bend over backwards and was extreemly helpful in my selections and with suggestions. Before I knew it I also had two awesome selections of salami to go with my cheeses. Did I also mention at this point out of no where another employee brings me a basket because they saw I had my hands full!? NICE! Josh then also was excellent about helping me get together some olives, spiced nuts, and bread to go along with my meal. I mentioned I wanted perhaps some apples and grapes, and would also likely need some utinsils. He noted he would take my items and put together an awesome basket/tote for me (he suggested the tote since it was only $1 vs. a $40 basket). Sweet. It took a bit for my basket to be put together and the whole time I'm thinking "how long does it take to throw my stuff in a bag?" But then I turn around and Josh hands me a tote that looks straight up fancy gormet like it would cost an arm and a leg...but it didn't! He stayed right under my price point of $40! So awesome! He literally took the time to take my meats and cheeses, fruits, olives, etc. and place them into 3 platic containers all carefully displayed. My utinsils were nicely wrapped with ribbon, I mean seriously I was blown away. Who does this!? Who goes out of there way like this!? ELEPHANTS DOES Top quality food. Top quality staff. They have me hooked now. I can't say enough good things.

Such a cute deli. They have baked goods placed at the entrance to entice you in. The set up is a bit confusing (for newcomers) as the registers/cafe are in an island in the middle and the grab-n-go coolers line the perimeter. We wanted sandwiches are were unsure of the orientation of the line (the sammy counter was all the way at the back) but figured it our once an employee noticed the confused looks on our faces. The hot sammy are delicious and the coffee strong. The seating area inside is a bit of a cluster, though.

This was my favorite place out of all the places we visited in Portland. There was lots of parking, lots of food and it was wonderfully decorated. We went before thanksgiving so it had a holiday feel and I dunno why but it reminded me of that Harry Potter treat cart that came around on the train.... soo much to choose from and so festive! I got the grilled cheese, tomato and spinach sandwich with the corn chowder. DELISH! And my bf got the reuben with potato salad. The potato salad was to die for! I can't wait to visit Portland again just so I can come back here. All of the food looked wonderful. Good prices, fun and everyone was super friendly!

Nice fresh food items with great assortment of meat and vegetarian items Very nice fresh looking grab and go selection They have many hot dishes which you can enjoy there or take home and savor. This is one place that has just gotten better over time and sets a bench mark for Delis in this town

I used to love this place for a quick lunch. It felt like good quality food. I was disappointed to learn, however, that they use soy oil in their fryer. My passion to keep GMOs out of my family's diet. So, while the food here tastes great, there are higher quality restaurants that satisfy my French fry love (addiction?) without the GMOs.

Elephants is basicalyy a high scale cafateria that serves about 10 different types of food, so even picky eaters have options. Personally I can't leave with out trying one of the yummy deserts, but they also have a place to buy wine and take home meals.

This place is so cool! Don't let the modest exterior fool you. It will break your Whole Foods salad bar addiction by replacing it with a new one. Steak was excellent. So were the curried shrimp, roasted veggies, and broccoli with garlic. Staff are totally sweet and caring.

Not only is the food fresh, and quickly made to order, but it's GOOD and reasonably priced. I had the tomato / orange soup.. sounded a little bit repulsive but i decided to give it a try. It was delicious! The staff was super nice, and overall it was a great place to visit in portland. Will definitely have to go back. Check it out if you're in the area. :)

It was chaotic! There were people walking everywhere and no one to help figure out where to pay The food was good but it was a yuppy version of whole foods and in my opinion whole foods is better. Bathrooms in a difficult place, it was like a maze to get there. Let's just say you couldn't send your kids alone. Over priced, just ok quality, and small portions in comparison of the many better places to eat in Portland

Same kudos as in my review for PDX FE branch only... the expanded version! We stopped by in Portland on our way back to Seattle from Medford. Since I haven't quite figured out what there is to do in the City of Roses other than walk around the Pearl and Alphabet Districts, watch a Timbers game or go to the Zoo, I like to stop by when in the area to Flying Elephants. I don't touch the stuff in the back. I head straight for Elephants specialties! Normally I grab a Caprese Panino from the refrigerated section but since this branch features its own grill and wood-fired oven, we were able to try their seasonal wild mushroom pizza with grilled onions, fontina and creme fraiche and one of their Tuscan chicken sandwich. The sandwich came fast and it was pretty good but the pizza, which took about 5 - 10 minutes to finish, was one of the best pizzas we've tried so far! We took leftovers, a bag, a Caprese and some great-tasting cookies from the bakery, too! I'm not a big sweets lover, but I thought they were good... got a peanut butter, a cowboy and a chocolate chip. I didn't go over the atmosphere but it is a pretty cool place to hang out. Same as the other ones! Just has a lot more real estate because it is their main store. Good job, FE!

On my first visit here, I got a BLT on Udi's GF bread and loved it. This is a fantastic deli, and I would come here before Whole Foods for meats and cheeses, prepared foods and baked goods. There's also a decent wine selection. Overall, I can't wait to come back- it's well worth the 15 minute walk from my place.

This is a magical, magical place. It's pretty expensive, but well worth it every once in a while. If you have any sort of special dietary needs, they'll be easily met and you'll have plenty of options. It's much bigger than it looks from the outside and if full of wonderful things. I would recommend eating outside. The inside eating area is pretty crowded and loud. The porch is lovely.

4/5 stars for me for their service and preparation of food, 5 stars for quality of food. I've had many sandwiches, all have been great. their hot foods is also good, chicken strip is more like chicken schnitzel, and the fries they serve here are so perfectly seasoned, crisp, and shoestring-like. I think they fry it in salt. Order the calamari by the half portion because it's a lot of calamari for even 2 people. HH fondue is awesome, baked goods are some of the best take homes cos their's actually last and don't go stale in a day! Other hot foods are good, go in an hour before closing for 50% off hot foods!

Elephants catered our wedding and did a fantastic job. I knew their food was amazing from visiting the storefront, so I was blown away when their catering quote was far more affordable than others'. We got a buffet style dinner of very local, summery fare and it was a huge hit. Absolutely delicious! They also provided the linens, cutlery, glassware, etc. and offered a full bar. They had a great assortment of local beer and wine and were flexible about sourcing preferred brands. We also had them bring an assortment of desserts to complement our cake, and those went immediately. Sadly, no leftovers. The macaroons were truly incredible. I loved that I could go in and look at/taste food or dessert on their catering menu whenever I wanted to (at the store) in addition to free tastings. Overall they provided some wonderful food, dessert, and drink for a very reasonable amount of money. At times during the planning process, response times could be a bit delayed. Not enough to sway my recommendation, however. Highly recommended if you want an affordable caterer who can provide simple but great tasting food.

Elephant's is awesome for lunch or dinner! They offer a panoply of options: from custom-made pizza to sandwiches, fresh salads, meats and fish, to a huge dessert section, every kind of beverage you could ever imagine: even beer and wine, and take out options. It's easy to find kid-friendly items, they offer catering, and they do have vegetarian options. It's one of those order, pay, sit, pick up your meal kind of places. Seating can be limited in the front room, but they have two big rooms in the back, and a huge gas fireplace. When we were there as a group of six, one of their staff members was so kind: he kept checking on us to make sure we were comfortable, and even lit the back room fireplace so we were cozy! Prices are moderate, and they have a parking lot! I love this place!

This is such a cool place! I wish we had these in Seattle! Basically, you walk in and it's like a gourmet food/gift shop and you can order hot food at different stations. There's a cold deli salad bar, there's a pizza counter, baked goods, there's a hot sandwich counter, etc. They also have a "take-home" section with soups, sandwiches, meals and frozen meals. My cousin ordered the squash and it was soooo good! There was ricotta cheese and herbs in it! I had a pizza and it was mighty tasty. My hubby bought Portland salami, aged Gouda and crackers to take back to our hotel and we devoured them! We even went back the next day (totally not on our way home) to order more for the car ride back to Seattle! We also bought a frozen enchilada meal to make for dinner and it was really tasty!

This place brings joy to my little heart. Their mushroom soup tastes like a snow day. Everything in here is worth eating--- but I am a dabbler because I can't ever make up my mind in here. I recommend getting a couple of small scoops of their tasty salads and some soup. Their sandwiches are always perfect, everything from their grill is more than decent and their desserts and baked goods are exceptional. Excellent selection of artisan meats and cheeses. Elephants is a must-stop on my Christmas shopping expeditions. It's the perfect place for stocking stuffers for my mother- and I get to enjoy a lunch while I am doing so. Their cocktails are out-of-this-universe. One of the few places in town with Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda- my fav.

Great little salads. They need a better soup selection. Plain chicken soup workout cream or curry. Was looking to drown out a cold. Salad was great and inexpensive. Went elsewhere for soup. Service was friendly.

I love this place. I lived a few blocks away for 3 months while I was in Portland and my wife and I went over here pretty much every weekend for brunch. There's just nothing else like this place anywhere I've lived. It's basically a big food court but all run by the same people and where everything is ridiculously tasty. There's a grill that makes hot sandwiches, a wood-fired pizza oven, some of the best meat you've seen anywhere, great salads and just about any desert you could ask for. They also have all kinds of specialty sodas including Dr Brown's which I remember from the little deli near where I grew up. It's just all amazingly tasty. Last time I had a Cajun fried catfish sandwich and the breading had jalepeño in it giving the whole thing an amazingly good spicy taste. I have literally never had a bad meal here and I've eaten something different every time. Go here any chance you can get. The best though is to go for a late brunch on a sunny weekend day when the whole place has a warm feeling from all the wood basking in the sun from the huge open windows.

One day, while still dressed in jeans and tee-shirt after cleaning house, I decided to stop and make an impromptu visit to Elephant's to have a sandwich and drink somewhere other than my house. The food was great. The problem, which is not anything Elephant's did, was that I felt like Cinderella in her cindery old clothes surrounded by the wicked stepsisters. I don't think I've ever felt so looked down upon on in many a year. The questioning looks I got basically asked the question, "what are you doing here," or "look what the cat dragged in." While I still enjoy Elephant's fine catered food often at business functions, I still cannot bring myself to go back on my own. Silly, I know, but I can't get past the feeling that I did not belong there.

Deli, gift shop, convenience store---I kind of get it. However if I am paying top dollar for a meal I have to carry around to build and stand in line to pay while it cools and buss my own table---NO THANK YOU. The noise was too harsh to enjoy a relaxing meal. I would rather go where I get large servings for a decent price and have others serve and clean up. Overlook Restaurant is my go to.

Yes, Elephant's is tasty "fast" gourmet food and yes it's a little on the pricey side. I wish I could afford to eat here every day, but until I win the lotto, this is a place I will stop into when I need something convenient and am willing to pay a premium for something better than your typical fast-food joint. Keep an eye out for Groupon-like specials because Elephant's has done them in the past. It's one way to save some money. Another is to take advantage of their half-off hot deli foods about an hour before it closes. Be warned though, many people are on to this and actually trawl the counter, waiting for them to post the sale signs. Once the signs go up, out of nowhere, there'll be a huge lineup and if you aren't fast enough, they'll run out of the dish you were contemplating paying full price for, but couldn't commit to just minutes earlier. Speaking from experience...

THIS PLACE IS SOOOOO CUTE! I have no idea how I've never been to this location but I found myself here today looking for a good sandwich. Did I find one? Yes I did! I ordered the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich (despite being unable to choose from so many delicious looking options!) and I do not regret it at all! It's delicious! Service was super nice and I spent the time waiting browsing through the adorable gift sets, jams, wines, cheeses - all my favorite things! I'll just have to make sure I set a budget next time I go or I'm afraid I'll walk out with tons of new stuff! At least I'll be able to get lunch while I shop!

I'm glad I didn't walk in hungry. Everything in this place screams buy me! Everything is tempting, I am so glad my friends and I decided to eat before we stopped by. But nonetheless that didn't stop us from sitting down and enjoying happy hour. What can I say? We can't turn down a good deal. A friend and I had the Kellyente, and my other friend had the Margarita. Everything was FRESH, all juices squeezed upon ordering, and you can really taste the difference. We also shared the calamari, also fresh and delicious. We received some of the best service I have ever had from the bartender. Complimentary cheese tastings, and a free glass of wine from a patron that decided not to get it, & he had a great sense of humor to top it all off, I only wish we could have gotten his name. Next time I might just walk in hungry so I can try more. I was however disappointed with the french macarons, completely the wrong texture, but everything else about this place makes up for it. Whether you want to buy some nice deli items to go, or stop by for a quick bite to eat- this is the place to go!

Heading out in the early evening for cocktails then make sure the Elephant Deli is on your list. Not a chance absent my wife insisting we go here would I have thought of a deli as a place for happy hour. Well think again brother. These guys make the best cocktails I have every had bar none. The Rob Roy I had was so smooth I could have downed 4 or 5 (common sense however dictated 2). The food here is always great. The Mahi Mahi appetizer and the focaccia pizza are outstanding. The mistake we made was leaving. We went to another place down the street which after the Elephant Deli was a disappointment. Hard to compete with perfection I guess.

I've only been here once but I'm eager to go back. This NY style delicatessen/restaurant has a huge selection of specialty foods, freshly made take home dinners/lunches, unusual brands, and a number of different 'hot food' stations. While we were here we sampled one of their beautiful egg pastas with a bit of truffle oil. The pasta blew me away, and I would've gladly bought some, except for the fact that we were leaving to go on a road trip that same afternoon. We did have sandwiches and soups (I think mine was a decent butternut squash soup that could've had a bit more spice). You can get all kinds of sandwiches, salads, pizza, and so on from this place. Our only complaint was that it's VERY loud and quite busy. If I lived in the area, I'd still have lunch here all the time though. I wish we had something similar in Eugene, but the closest we've got is Marche Provisions, and that's just not as awesome as Elephants. Until next time, Elephants! I'll be back.

It's a deli and a convenient store and a little gift shop rolled into one. I doubt you can find anything like this in California. There's outdoor and indoor seating, there's freshly brewed coffee, there are baked goods and sandwiches, and best of all...HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS and MIMOSAS. Jyahhhh! That's right. It happened! It exists! I won't lie and say that things are a bit pricey here but their well-lit and friendly atmosphere makes up for it. Tried the orange tomato soup...blew my mind! However, it is a little on the pricey side at $3-4 a cup. But who cares? It's delicious and you have a place to drink mimosas, eat sandwiches, drink soup, and read your newspaper on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I'm in love :)

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and sheer extensiveness of this deli. There's certainly plenty of options not matter what type of food-mood you're in. The prosciutto and fig pizza I ordered was fabulous! I wish this deli was in my neighborhood.

I've never eaten anything from here that didn't make me happy in my belly. Burgers, Monte Cristo's, cookies, cheesy twists, salads. If you get cookies or pastries after 5, there is a deal. Oh and get the frequent cookie buyer card, it's so worth it.

This review is for my Tomato soup list! The carrot tomato soup at Elephants makes me question my preference for a bisque. It is very fresh tasting, and by no means lacking in flavor. The carrots give the soup an extra sweetness which cuts the acidity of the tomato quite nicely. As it is also very easy for me to frequent this establishment on my lunch breaks, I found it has become a lovely wintertime staple.

The food is fantastic, I go to the one at PDX at least 2x a month. I love their salads and mac n cheese, I just wish they had nutritional values listed. It's really nice to know that you're eating natural and local while getting outstanding quality and flavor! I have tried even their sweet treats, soups, meat and it's all good across the board!

I think prior to my recent visits, I would have rated this 4 stars. But the last few times I've been there, I've had some really flipping good food here. Sometimes at half-price, no less! One time, we had a couple friends down from Seattle. We stopped in here late morning on a Saturday. Seated at the bar, we decided we might have a bevvie, perhaps one alcoholic in nature. The bartender named Kelly (I still remember) said "Do you want to have the best margarita you've ever had?" Oh, challenging us, eh? Bring it on, mister. And he brought it. Sugar-muddled limes, mas tequila, and Grand Marnier shaken in a glass and served on ice. Hosannah! It was incredible. Delicious all the way down and one was about all you needed. Loopy! I've tried to replicate it and, despite it's simple ingredients, haven't been able to approach his masterpiece. Now, the days of this offering are over, I'm told. He did say we could be grandfathered in if we came back, something I hope might stay true til the present day? How bout it? USA #1? I've gottened some hot food from the deli lately, not really having a great memory of the quality but willing to get stuck in for 50% off. Even late in the day, when they are trying to blow the food out the door, I've had some really great eats. The mac & cheese is divine. Whatever cheeses they use work as well together as Tango & Cash. Rich, nuanced flavors abound. Same goes with the potatoes au gratin. And oh my goodness, how could I not mention you first, Sveedish meatballs with spaetzle? I'm getting that every time. If I sees it, I'll seize it. These are just some of the reasons to love them. They often have tête de moine, a cheese so radical that you have to have a special device (a girolle) to plane it into little rosettes. Lovely stuff. The only other place I've seen that is at Cheese Bar. As far as the baked goods? Commence forgetting about it! Tastydelphia. It's not going to be like an Albertson's deli, price- or taste-wise. Good food costs money to make. It's a great place to go treat yourself to something scrumtrillescent.

A friend of mine had been raving about this place for a long time.. We finally dropped by on our way to Multnomah Falls and I wasn't disappointed! My (Boar's Head stuffed) sandwich was absolutely delicious and the staff was really friendly. Will definitely be back!

Yes, its pricey. But, its across the street and sometimes I pay for convenience. The food is great quality, tasty and fresh. I also enjoy their baked goods, candies and other treats. Good place to take out of town guests.
