My first time. My bagel sandwich wasn't fully heated...most of the cheese wasn't even melted. The flavor was good but my lunch could have been better....

Lived in Salt Lake City for a few years during the 1990s. Lived just down the street from a decent bagel place. Then Einstein Bros bought it, took out the good bagels, and replaced them with barely edible pieces of round bread. So I move to Portland an fall in love with Kettleman. Then Einstein Bros bought them out and replaced their great bagels with barely edible pieces of round bread. I'm starting to think Einstein's management has a secret plan to ruin my life. Don't bother with this place, the average 7-Eleven has better bagels. Head west to Kenny & Zuke's Bagelworks, or south to Portland Bagelworks. Neither of those two are my favorite, but they're infinitely better than than Einsteins. Here's hoping Einstein Bros is driven from this city before long.

I too was extremely disappointed at the switch from Kettleman's to Einstein at this location, and with the overall bagel quality. However, I disagree with previous reviewers about the service. I think it has improved a great deal at this location. While the other Ketteman's locations were always a pleasant experience, this location reeked of snarky-hipstery-annoyed-with-your-presence attitude that is so pervasive in my neighborhood. I'm happy for the personnel change. The food is okay... not great, but okay.

just wanted to put out there, that my husband and i went to have a Einstein bagel sandwich for lunch yesterdat 1-5-13 on 4th street downtown Portland, they took our order there was noone else in the shop but us the cashier took our order and didnt get it right, she asked if i wanted potato salad or chps i said salad my husband asked for chips we never got the chip, i wanted a whole wheat bagel which she asked what kind of bagel i wanted my sandwich on and it was by no means wheat, was very disapointed will probably never go back to that store

I love going to this location. The staff is always super friendly! I'm not sure why the other reviews are dogging the food, I think it's absolutely delicious and prepared with care (esp since you can see them making it). The Asiago bagel with cheese and smoothie = so damn good!

I met with my cousin for coffee up in NW yesterday, we were on a little bit of a time crunch and passed this Einstein bagel so we decided to head in and give it a try. The menu and layout is that of your average bagel sandwich shop. The girl at the counter was sweet. We got the same thing, iced coffee and a turkey avocado sandwich with a fruit bowl. They have outside searing which is always nice when it's so beautiful outside. The fruit bowl wasn't fresh, they were in little prepackaged bowls which was very underwhelming. The sand which itself was tasty, not spectacular. The sauce was good but everything else tasted pretty processed and the bread was too much (shoulda gotten it on a bagel!) the iced coffee was pretty weak. It was OK. But I probably won't be back considering the other yummy ooey gooey bagel places in Portland. Not bad if you're in a hurry though!

I guess I don't know "good" bagels, since I didn't find anything wrong with this place. ;) Went here for breakfast, got an egg and cheese sandwich on a cheese bagel, with some onion and chive or something spread. It was tasty! Also had a latte, which beat S***b***s coffee by a mile. MIL had black tea, which they gave us two packets to make sure she could get it strong enough. Service was just fine, and there were a bunch of other bagel flavors that looked good to me.

Enjoyed the food but grumpy cashier told my son to give him a dog treat that my son had dropped on the floor. Really? My dog would be happy to get a treat that had fallen on the floor. My poor son felt like he had done something wrong because of this grump. Thanks for the teachable moment on dealing with difficult people.

The food is adequate, but the place seems a little sterile. In a neighborhood with many food options to choose from, this would not be in my top 15.

RUIINNNNEEEED!!! Kettleman, Kettleman, wherefore art thou Kettleman? You're hiding there, with your great staff, now forced to serve up corporate dreck of O-shaped death disks with apologetic smiles. You're even tucked in among those monstrosities, with three original boiled bagel varieties still remaining -- plain, sesame and original. (Oh, and you HAVE to say "boiled sesame" or said awesome staff must give you death Einstein sesame). But you're gone. Gone is your smoked salmon cream cheese, replaced by a pink-hued "shmear" that was somehow sweet and way too salty at the same time. Gone is Stumptown, in favor of whatever crap Einstein stocks. (I didn't bother ordering my customary latte). Also, gone is your tip jar, so I can't even leave a buck or two to let the staff know that it's not them -- it's Einstein. It doesn't take an Einstein-level genius to know that this was a bad move. I give it a big bagel shaped zero.

Very disappointed in this change. We moved here recently from SoCal and was so happy we found Kettlemans. This location is close to my son's school and was the perfect place to stop for bagels, everything I ordered was exactly how I liked it. Hadn't had a bagel this good since living on the east coast 13 years ago. When we moved to Portland in January we tried Einstein's in another location and it was not an experience I enjoyed. The bagel was awful, and the coffee was just okay. Bagels are not that good for you, but I love bagels, so when I eat a bagel I want them to be delicious. I refuse to go here now that it is Einstein's, I drove by the other day and it looks like CAT, the heavy equipment construction company. The people in charge of this buy out are complete idiots, it will clearly fail.

Though I cant and don't eat bagels, Kettleman's was my Saturday morning spot for coffee and socialization with a group of my friends. The coffee was good, the macaroons were to die for. The atmosphere was relaxing and everyone who worked there knew my name and drink. Now Einstein is nothing more than a corporate nightmare complete with advertising logos scattered all over the place. The cheesy decor reminds me of being in an international airport or the food court in a Midwestern mall. Its quite an ordeal just to order something with the two lines and being told that I can only "order drinks in that one" after waiting in line for 5 minutes. I felt like I was in a fast food joint. The coffee was bland and flavorless and nobody in my party liked the selection or bagels.

I miss Kettleman's. The bagel is dry on the outside and spongey on the inside, in an unfulfilling, doughy sort of way. The only part of the bagel I could taste was the cheese on top. The rest was, well, filler. The chive cream cheese was ok, but that's it. If I am investing calories in cream cheese, it has to be worth it. And it isn't. My mornings of trekking to Lovejoy to fulfill my bagel fantasies are over. I will now search for a new local company to buy boiled bagels from.

(Addition on October 3, 2012: check out Kenny and Zuke's Bagleworks on Thurman near 24th. They have very good bagels.) The service is not good and the bagels are terrible. They're like every other mass-produced, non-boiled bagel. They are ok bread, but not good bagels. Sorry to see Kettlemans's go. Hard to blame Einstein Bros if Kettleman's chose to sell out. I do fault them for making terrible bagels. The service is not good either. Their two line system I'm sure is designed to keep people moving, but this now feels like a fast food place at the airport. The two times I've been in it was packed. I can't figure out why. I'm giving them two stars rather than one only because they still have 2 flavors of boiled bagels which are decent. Wish somebody would open a shop that makes real bagels on the West side.

Terrible... Overpriced. Even their boiled bagels suck. The only good thing about this place is they kept some of the staff from Kettleman's. I feel bad for them. Leave this area and bring back decent bagels.

Typical corporate trash. Bland, disappointing bagels. Sadly covered in a thin layer of their idea of cream cheese. No more Stumptown coffee here. No more local anything. Don't go here. Support local businesses instead.

  • Matt S.

Let's see, stand in TWO lines to receive a small, dry, crappy bagel. And they call this Einstein? The old guy must be rolling in his grave. The arrogance of this company is astounding and they will fail in this neighborhood yet again. Wasn't it Einstein that said something like the definition of insanity is repeating your actions and expecting a different result?

If you like bagels it's a step up from most places. Not the traditional style. I have gone to all the other bagel stores in the area I am sure to come back again. Don't let the other jaded reviews keep you from trying them out!
