Ok, this is an update to my first experience at THIS location of the East Side Deli. As I love ALL things Portland, except the sometimes "hipper than thou" attitude that plagues the Rose City, I decided to give this location another try. I will admit when I'm wrong. The first visit was horrible. The SECOND visit was amazing. Ok, so maybe the manager was having a bad day, when I visited the first time? We all have them, right? We're all human, after all. THIS TIME, she was VERY friendly and helpful this time. The food, as I've experienced frequently at the Lombard location, was delicious. The atmosphere was lighthearted and fun. So, now I feel awful that I wrote such a scathing review for my first experience there, which I maintain was truly unpleasant and incredibly frustrating. I guess the moral of this story is, everyone deserves a second chance. I should have just taken it in stride and gone back a second time BEFORE writing the negative review. BOTTOM LINE: This place is a veggie paradise. The people are unique, as is the restaurant and neighbourhood. If you're looking for "cookie cutter", got to Subway. If you're looking for a Portland experience, go to East Side Deli.

I love this place! I am hitting it more often and I just took a picture of my sandwich for all of you who want to know how monster this place is. Everybody! Take Pictures of your food and upload it on yelp. It helps and it gets you some fine ass females and free TMNT action figures in the mail.

Look! Up on that deli counter! It's a bird...it's a plane... It's a full on sandwich that rivals a school bus! The sheer monstrosity of these sandwiches blows me away. I love the simplicity here, though. You go up to the counter; you grab a laminated order card and a trusty pen and go to town. They have several predetermined specialties, like the amazing roast beef and swiss or reubanesque. If you're a bit of a control freak, though, flip that card over. Make your own. This isn't Subway folks. We have REAL choices here. In addition, you can rest assured that you're not going to get olives because the person making your sandwich is looking at the card YOU put together. Don't check the olive box and you don't get olives. That's the way it should be. Breads. Meats. Cheeses. Dressings. Toppings. Cold. Toasted. Even my mathy head doesn't want to think of all the possible combinations. You'll find something to make you happy though. Vegans, too. I'm kind of in line with Don's call on the bread almost being too thick. Yeah, this is coming from me, the bread queen. It probably would help if I didn't have braces. I wish having mashed up sandwich in your braces were sexy. If it were, I'd be golden. If you order a 12", and I did, you're walking away with two wrapped sandwiches the size of small children. Each one is specially wrapped in butcher paper and masking tape. They don't mess around with Scotch tape, oh no. I'm surprised it wasn't duct tape to be honest. They're that fat. The perfect amount of ingredients lay cradled within the bread-lover's dream. There is a happy medium in the meat department that I'm always on a quest for. I know you know what I mean. You don't want too much so that you're having a hard time fitting it in your mouth. You know that's never a pleasant sight. At the same time, if the meat is too small, it's going to leave you unsatisfied. Sure, you can fake it, but that's not fun for anyone. You could easily make all twelve inches last you through lunch and dinner. However, I'm selfish and greedy and I want every inch all at once. I don't want sloppy seconds. I was full, satiated, and happy. It was $9 well spent.

Sometimes, a vegan just wants a sandwich. And that can be deceptively difficult, what with the demise of Veganopolis and all the new sandwich places that worship the shrine of cholesterol. But never fear, East Side Deli is here to save the day. I could go to Subway with my $5 and get a flabby 12" that isn't very exciting. Or I can go to ESD with 5 and leave with a hefty (seriously, the thing has weight) sandwich featuring local Dave's Killer Bread, Veganaise, and a glorious amount of Field Roast Grain Meat from our friends in Seattle. It's a good sandwich. I don't know what else to say, so I'll just give it the best compliment I can -- I can't even fit my mouth around it. Heh. Take them to go and have a picnic in Laurelhurst or Mt. Tabor, you won't be far from either.

why does this place not have a 5 star rating yet??? Fucking delicious sandwiches!! Tons of options, cute scruffy staff, good prices....and seriously....you cant beat their meat! They have shirts!!! LOL

East Side lets ME be the pilot of my sandwich building journey. Plus they have Dave's Killer, premium meats and deliciously fresh veggies. Suck it, Subway!

This place is by far my favorite sandwich shop in Portland or anywhere. They use high-quality ingredients and are efficient and friendly. It's wonderful to have sandwich variety as a vegetarian. At most other sandwich shops your choice is "the veggie", aka all the ingredients they have that aren't meat. Gross. The only thing I haven't been happy with East Side about is when ordering a specialty sandwich and writing clearly not to add a specific ingredient, it's almost always in there and not discovered until I've taken the carry-out home and have to wipe a bunch of mayo or oil off the bread. It would be even better if customers could order online and if they delivered during peak hours.

I eat here once sometimes twice a week, so yes, I'm a fan. I'm holding back one star because while I eat the Rubenesque most every time, I have had one or two other offerings and they weren't as good. I'm holding out hope that the place in my hood will get to the level of that other place on Morrison, by the bridge. THEN East Side will get my fifth star.

I wish there was a Portland place I could get an amazing cheap high-quality huge-ass Roast Beef sandwich with mushrooms, mayo, olives, avocado, bacon, crushed potato chips, shredded carrots, fresh lettuce, and tomatoes on an Asiago cheese roll. Oh yeah, there is.

Dearest East Side, I apologize for our absence on Mondays. It's not you, it's me. I lost my damn job and can't really afford our weekly habit (not that your sandwiches are at all expensive). We miss your delicious, honkingly huge sandwiches ever so much. Much love.

After seeing so many glowing reviews from fellow Yelpers for this place, I thought I'd give it a go. I came here tonight and got an 11 inch Italian sub, because I like having leftovers and thought I'd want to finish eating it tomorrow. After receiving my food (it was given to me as two separate sandwiches), I biked home and opened one up. It was incredibly soggy (I even requested that the bread be toasted) and had waaay too much sauce on it. The meat was good, and the bread would have been good had it not been drenched in greasy oil/sauce, but I daresay I would have been better off getting a 5 dollar footlong from Subway and saving the extra 8 bucks. I am disappoint. :(

Yeah, so I had a craving for a tuna sub & decided to change it up a bit. I had to drive by on an errand & figured it'd be an adventure to try somewhere new. I went in expecting to order the tuna but I left with an Italian sub the size of a preemie. That's right, a preemie. And eating that baby may have given me TMJ. In fact, if I eat anything else today you might as well just check me into fat camp. On top of getting a super huge sammy for $5- it actually tasted pretty good. Moral of the story: eating Italian preemies on wheat bread may be super tasty, but you'll break your jaw & maybe get chunky (er). Doooo-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

  • Rob W.

Best sandwiches in town for the price, period. I can't think of another joint in town that gives this kind of bang for the buck. $5 gets you a 6" sub, which is generally hearty enough to fill you up (a bag of chips to supplement will certainly do the trick if you're not sure). Combined with top notch ingredients (boars head) and being able to order a sandwich off the menu or build your own, and great array of drinks to chose from (Mexican coke!), you're destined for a great meal for under $10 with chips and a drink. Oh, and they have good vegan/vegetarian options.

    (5)
  • Richard V.

If you want a vegan sandwich that will actually fill you, this is the spot. I don't even understand how I can get a sandwich jam packed with Field Roast for $6. They are either taking a loss or Field Roast is overcharging consumers at the retail level.

  • Rachel H.

$6 for a HUGE, TASTY sandwich with as many toppings as you want. Plus they have great vegan and vegetarian options. Speedy service too.

I would say I'm slightly obsessed with this deli. I can get a massive sandwich here for a great price, and I get to put all the vegetables on it that I can handle. It is seriously the best deli sandwich in town, hands down. And I also must say something about the staff; great peeps! They are always SO friendly to me when I come in, I truly enjoy the experience all around.

Subway get off the bus, I'm racing to East Side Deli. Huge honkin' sandwiches, cool chicas behind the counter and the tunes are always rockin'. Don't let this pass you by, stop in for a sandwich soon!

Love this place - great, fresh, healthy sandwiches. And love the field roast! It's such a fun add on to a veggie sub.

    (5)
  • Bob M.

New favorite deli. They have field roast and serve generous portions of it and their hot subs with it are great. For meat eaters they serve boars head which is pretty decent. They're open late and much to my surprise there is one on Lombard.

Definition of a sandwich: -noun 1. two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair. Thanks Dictionary.com ! Now, the definition of a sandwich done correctly varies depending on who you ask. And, if you ask me a sandwich done correctly should have: -Awesome bread with a nice crust and a chewy soft interior. The added bonus of the bread baked at a local vendor is delightful. -The sauces, mayos, and/or dressings used should be flavorful but not overwhelming. They should compliment the ingredients that are tucked between the slices of bread. -The meat should be fresh and contain very little to no gristle. -The cheese should be flavorful and should not leave a film on your teeth, whether it be melted or cold. - The veggies and other toppings should be crisp, fresh and colorful. (White iceberg lettuce at some fast-food sub places are obviously not an example...) They should taste like, well, the vegetables they are. Too many times places pass off toppings that are mushy and tasteless as being healthy delicious vegetables. I truly believe that in order to say that a restaurant, deli, food joint, etc has good green stuff, it should be able to be center stage without adding meat (but that's the vegetarian in me talking). Now, I've gone through all of this without saying anything about East Side Deli but really, if you go there and try one of their enormous subs, you'll understand that it has everything to do with my description of a sandwich done correctly. It's great too because you can choose a preset sandwich on one side of their menu or pick exactly what you want on your customized sandwich on the other side. You can have it as a 6-inch or a footlong, toasted or not, packed with awesome meat or a veggie bonanza. It really is up to you. The service there is great and pretty quick, the portion size more than generous, and the price rivals fast food sub places. For what you pay for and what you actually get, this place is where it's at. My boyfriend and I enjoyed it so much that we left a $7 tip for $14 worth of food. Oh yeah, and they ran out of bread due to their awesome sandwiches so they closed the doors early. That, I believe is the mark of one great deli!!

Saaaaaaaandwiches!!!! This place is a great sandwich shop. Excellent ingredients and big sandwiches. What more do you need? Need a Viso? They have that too, sucka! This place always gives me a quality result.

    (5)
  • Ben S.

Good, big cheap sandwiches with quality ingredients. The bread is good too. Somehow they feel really healthy, even if you eat a huge sandwich full of meats with mayo and everything. Skilled sandwich artisans, I'd say. Plus, a 12-inch sub was enough for dinner for me and my girl and my lunch the next day. And they have punch cards!

Are these reviews for real!?! C'Mon Portland, you gotta be better than this! Two people working on a Sunday made for about a twenty minute wait. We split an Italian grilled sub that was not nearly grilled because the bread was an enormous hunk of tastless, doughy crap - Dave's killer bread was an insult to Dave's everywhere as well as the term 'killer'. The ingredients were fine but not formed with any craft or love or love of craft...they were simply ingredients. This coupled with horrible bread meant it was trash time.

East Side has all the right stuff: high quality fixins, great of selection of normal and not-so-normal ingredients (yes, the cajun mayo is also my fav ), totally reasonable prices, honkin' huge sandwiches (seriously, i have a hard time wrapping my mouth around it. and oh so rarely is that a problem. go ahead, laugh at the innuendo.), fast/friendly service, convenient hours. And if you're into the toasted sandwich thing, I highly recommend letting them give your East Side sammy a run through the oven - it took me to a whole new warm/crunchy taste-sensation level. My only complaint (and it's all about me, not about them): the place totally gives me "the grass is greener on the other side" complex - no matter what I order and how delicious it is, I've always thought everyone else's sandwiches looked even better. Oh well. Oh, and they have Tim's Jalapeno chips. Ding dong!

Love me some Eastside Deli. I live about 3 blocks away and hit them up every week or 2. My favorite is the pulled pork. It's very sweet and tasty and get it with cheddar and coleslaw. You pretty much can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches and they're very nicely priced. You won't need more than a 6 inch unless you're feeling gluttonous. During lunch time call ahead, they are popular! The staff is real cool and seem to be having a good time, I'm envious of their jobs.

oh seriously!!!!!!!!! This place has THE best Veggie sandwich I have ever had! and the Tomato Basil rocked my world (vegan). I went to the Lombard location but super excited that there is a Hawthorne location that is closer to my house. Im serious, this is amazing!

Firstly, this would be a 4 1/2, if I had the option. Two words: Cajun. Mayo. and: Meat. Ratio. and also: Boars. Head. Okay. Two words aren't enough to describe the deliciousness. The Portland Steak and the Meatball subs are both phenomenal. The cold cuts are fricken amazing. The bread is nice and fluffy and yields to the fillings. Perfect sandwiches and great value. Eat here.

I'm someone who loves overflowing salad sandwiches, but most food places don't do them right. The closest is Subway, but, ew. At East Side, all my dreams of fresh, delicious, plentiful vegetables on a huge fluffy crusty sandwich roll have come true. There are almost more choices than should be allowed. $5 for a 6-inch that's basically also 6 inches around? There's absolutely no way you can beat this place.

    (5)
  • Kenneth H.

There is nothing fancy about this place, it is food that feeds, but it certainly doesn't entertain. ESD makes sandwiches in the deli spirit (big, lots of meat, and nothing pretentious) with just a hint of Portland attitude. I can take down a 6 inch, but just barely and it is a lot of food no matter what you choose, you don't need to order a 12 inch to be satisfied. When you arrive you fill out an order form and after dropping it off at the counter it is assembled for you fairly quickly (the longest I waited was 15 minutes). I sometimes struggle trying to decide what to get, so if you are indecisive half of the menu has pre-created sandwiches that you can choose from. There are no surprises on the order form, meat, cheese, spread, veggies, and done. There is no time for the menu to tout its own greatness (as in how organic, local, sustainable, fresh, blah...blah) which I truly appreciate because in the end the food speaks for itself and doesn't need to spend time on that BS. I generally choose Turkey for my meat, as many veggies as I can, cheese I vary each time, but I am loving the horseradish spread, and always get a roll for bread (not a fan of sliced bread for sandwiches) They serve Tim's Cascade chips, and a whole slew of absurd hippie-ish beverages, but mostly I just grab some water, a gang of napkins and hit the outside tables or journey to Mt. Tabor for consumption. Things to remember: 1) It is a small place, and you will probably not get seating 2) The sandwiches are messy (especially if you get ingredients full of water like lettuce, tomatoes, etc) so grab napkins! 3) The sandwiches are large, so be prepared. good luck and god speed.

Quick update from my last review. Prices went up a little - now it's $5 for a 6" sub. But don't be fooled because for $5 you get a much better sub than a comparable $5 Subway 12" deal. They also changed their hours back to 9pm. No more late night window - the note on the sign said "due to scheduling and inventory issues we will no longer be offering the late night window." I stop into East Side a few times a month to pick up a sandwich on the run. The quality of the food is very good and they keep it nice and clean. As a matter of fact, I would really challenge you to find a better $4.50 sandwich in the city. (no clue how they can actually make money at this price) I had the hot beef sandwich yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a giant portion of beef which was already mixed with some onions, peppers and mushrooms in a ketchup sauce. At first it wasn't at all what I expected (I was thinking Philly Cheesesteak style). But it was a tasty sandwich. They are now open late night and have a "window" where you can get service into the early mornings on Friday and Saturday. The place itself is rather small, with one table and a counter with stools. So don't plan on taking your friends there for a bite. But - great thing to do is grab a sandwich and a soda and head over to Mt. Tabor or Laurelhurst park on a nice day. One thing that may throw you off at this little place is that the staff isn't too outgoing. I'm not sure if it's by design or just how they are. But when you walk in, you never hear a "hello" even if you are the only person there. They are always in their own "world" behind the counter. You take a form, check the boxes and leave it on the counter. Not once have I been talked to by the sandwich maker. Not that I go to restaurants to engage in social exchanges with the staff, but there is just something kinda strange about this.

East side Deli just opened up about two weeks ago, and I finally made it in today. It's a pretty small shop, but has plenty of selection for your meats, cheeses, toppings, and sides. They carry Boar's Head Meat and Cheese (which I love), so bonus points there! You may think 3 stars looks bad, but really it just means that it was okay. For the price ($4.50 for a six inch, $8 for a foot long), you get a lot. The meat portion is generous and they load on the veggies. My main complaint is with the bread, but that's just my personal preference. If you like the super thick sub rolls, hard to tear style, this will be right up your alley. They don't give you a choice of breads, although I did notice a loaf of wheat on the counter as I left. I will ask them for that instead next time. My other complaint is not that they charge extra for avocado (.50), but they were pretty stingy with it, only finding two small slivers for my gigantic sandwich. Maybe they should up it to .75 or $1 and give a proportionate amount so I can actually taste it? They also have a deli case with different pasta/potato salads and other goodies.

  • Ada H.

oh. my. god. the sandwiches here are amazing. sure, the guys making them were a little off (maybe had too much fun with mary jane on their break), but my 6" sub rocked my world. for around 6 bucks you get a choice of 2, TWO!, meats, cheese, and all the veggies and dressings you could imagine. and they don't cheat you by choosing 2 meats, it's like having 2 sandwiches. i will be going back very soon, i only wish they still had the customer loyalty program...

  • Amie D.

I didn't start coming here until my fiancé and I moved into the southeast part of Portland. I had been a Northwest/Nob Hill snob for the past three years...meaning I've been satisfying the sandwich craving with Kenny and Zukes. Don't get me wrong, those sammies are great BUT they don't come close to Eastside in terms of how full my belly us after AND how full my wallet still is (You know, metaphorically speaking) after an Eastside trip which, I must admit, happens at least once a week (Except for this week; today is my third visit thus far...). Plus, they're just so freaking delicious.

  • Jennifer F.

I love this place. As a vegan who is from the east coast it is not easy to find a good Hoagie. The East Side Deli has pulled it off! I always get the "make it yourself" sandwich but you can also choose from one of their sandwiches on the menu. I like the music they play and the relaxed setting. you can sit inside or outside. The people who work there are friendly and there is a neighborhood deli kind of feel. Definately not pretentious! Totally recommend!

    (5)
  • Emily T.

Wow - really got this one wrong the first time around. Since my first so-so experience, I've been back 10+ times - this is my favorite sub sandwich in town! I would definitely recommend getting your sandwich toasted, even if you're saving it for later - it'll help with the soggy bread factor. This place is Subway on steroids, in the best possible way.

    (5)
  • Heather M.

Very disappointed. Ya, the sandwiches are huge. But as soon as I bit into my meatball sub, I knew it was filled with soy protein - and not homemade. There is nothing great about a pre-fab meatball filled with preservatives and soy protein in place of real ingredients like meat!!? Considering I"m allergic to soy, this was also a real stomachache for me. The Philly Cheesesteak was an even bigger disappointment. Philly Cheesesteaks are NOT slathered in a sickeningly gluey, overly sweet and salty barbeque sauce with nary a sauteed bell pepper or onion in sight. ?? And while the menu does mention a "marinade" this sauce goes far beyond the definition of marinade. What a shame to do that to a sandwich and call it a Philly Cheesesteak. Did I order the worst two things on the menu? Perhaps. But I can tell you I won't be going back to try my luck again. UPDATED: Updated to say that they did refund our money, which was nice. Also, maybe its because I'm a chef - and I can discern "fake" additives, flavorings, preservatives etc. that I didn't like the two sandwiches I ordered. The average joe probably would be fine with soy in their meatballs! Finally - it was MY FAULT that I didn't read the cheesesteak description better. It doesn't say Philly Cheesesteak - but Portland Cheesesteak. So I was expecting a totally different sandwich.

Been eating here for years, and when I lived in the neighborhood I was frequenting the place about 3 days per week for over 9 months. Never got old. They really do have the best sandwiches! The Dave's Killer Bread seals the deal on awesome.

Great deli! Hidden treasure on upper Hawthorne. No nonsense, but still original deli with great sandwiches. Park it and eat or take it to go. Friendly staff.

  • Mr H.

The sandwiches are great!!!! but their toaster does not work very well at all. I usually order my sandwiches toasted because I like crispy bread, "Toast" I have never in my years of patronage gotten that effect from their toaster. The bread is warm but not toasty at all. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To… This is a link to the how Wikipedia defines toast.

HUGE subs featuring juicy, well rounded flavors and stuffed with meat. I can't even eat an entire 6incher myself. nothing out of the ordinary; just a great sub if one is in the mood.

  • Linnea M.

We just moved into the neighborhood, so we've been checking out all the local eats. East Side Deli was good, but nothing spectacular. It's very cool that they have Dave's bread, and they do have some unique combinations and options for vegans, but I just felt like it was a regular old sandwich that I could make at home. I would go back because it's just around the corner and the prices are not bad, but I wouldn't travel far or make a special trip to go there from elsewhere in the city. Totally decent, but a little underwhelming.

It is probably impossible to order anything gross here.

  • Joshua M.

I totally wanted to love this place, it certainly has potential. A very small hole in the wall type of joint. I love sandwich places where you fill out a checklist of ingredients, it's hard to mess that up. I just wish there had been more of one certain ingredient (meat), and less of another (bread to meat ration overwhelming favored bread). The lettuce also was a bit wilted, and the avocado looked like it had been sliced and been sitting out a little too long. Maybe I caught them on an off day? Also one of the girls making sandwiches said something about not being able to do meat? What? You can't touch meat and you work in a sub shop? Huh?

These are the best Hoagies that I have had in years. I'm from Philadelphia, and one thing that this town can't seem to figure out is how to make a decent hoagie. East Side has done it. My first hoagie here made me want to cry. Everything that goes in is fresh (produce from uncle paul's) and made your your precise specification. Subway has done some incredible damage to food culture in the United States. I've been telling everybody I know about East Side, because East Side is precisely the kind of real deal delicatessen that we need to succeed!

Damn, East Side Deli...the Field Dip sub can alone make me return to my vegetarian ways.

  • Shawna N.

I too got a nice message from the owner telling me that I could have them gut my roll. I did not even think about that. That just may be what I needed to do in the first place. I like the bread, but it was too much. I am going to give it another try with the gutted bread and then report back.

Best Deli in Portland! This deli makes giant sandwiches, that are bursting while whole ingredients, made to order and fresh as can be. I go here very often because the amount and quality of food you get for the price is amazing! I send all of my friends and family and even just strangers off the street here!

Returned to try the Italian Grinder, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite sandwiches, next to the meatball, of course...grinder...next to the meatball...huhhuhhuh.

Let me start by saying that sandwiches are my favorite food. I try an find the best sandwiches everywhere I go. I go out of my to get sandwiches from places with good reviews and then I keep wishing I would have just gone to eastside. The sandwiches are huge (they sell 6 and 12 inches and I usually can't even finish the 6 incher [thats that she said?] and I can't imagine who could handle all 12 inches), the ingredients are great, you can build your own from a huge list or pick one of theirs, the prices are good, the place is rad, the girls behind the counter are always having fun and loving life, and they have tiramisu. I'd move in if they let me. Seriously.

    (5)
  • Emily W.

I can't say enough good things about East Side Deli. It's a ridiculously great value for your buck, the ingredients are always incredibly tasty and fresh, it's healthier than almost any other "fast" food, and the staff is super-duper friendly. I took my parents there when they were in town recently and my dad (a somewhat taciturn economics professor) gushed that it was the best sandwich he's had in at least two decades. Seriously. Try this place!

Sure, you can always find something to complain about - oh it's not the decor I would put in my ideal fancy restaurant, but then it wouldn't be that reasonably priced either now would it? Great portions, cool peeps, they keep their heads cool under pressure & are still friendly. Heard the boss is a jerk though so I'd avoided it for a long time - he at least has a knack for hiring great people tho!

This place has decent sandwiches. Not the best I've ever had but for the price you pay and the quality of the ingredients, you get a solid deal. I just wish their employees didn't have such a bad attitude. It's not even like I expect you to talk to me and ask how my day was. I just expect basic courtesy, such as, when I walk up to the counter, you acknowledge my presence and say, "I'll be with you in a minute", rather than ignoring me for 10 minutes while you talk about Pantera or whatever crappy band it is that you like. It's really really easy. So for that, you guys get 3 measly stars.

WOW! I have found heaven on earth. This place is seriously the best sandwich shop "hands down" in PDX. The Portland Cheese Steak is amazing!! Better than the Clay's BBQ Beef & The Reuben is stacked and tasty as hell. Me and my girl went there yesterday and let me tell you we my just move in. Kudos to the dudes & dudets working there that hooked us up. If you haven't been, please do yourself a favor and do.

This place is great!! SO inexpensive, yet delicious and quality!! I do wish the bread wasn't quite as thick, but you can also get your sandwich made with Dave's Killer Bread...which is awesome! I really like that you fill out a checklist with exactly what you want, and they are very generous with the fixin's!! The staff is always friendly and everything always tastes fresh. It can take a little longer than you might expect to get your sandwich, but they are busy and take the time to make the sandwich PERFECT, so it is worth waiting a couple extra minutes.

I love a mean sandwich and let me tell ya...This place knows how to make a f@&king sandwich! Thats all i could say after devouring the first half of a full sadwich was...Now thats a f#%king sandwich! Even the day after I woke up and the first words out of my mouth was...now that was a f^!king sandwich! the perfect sandwich deli ever!

I was starving when I arrived at the deli, and I left stuffed. I got a sandwich on Dave's Killer Bread, so right off the bat it's good. Had some delicious Boar's Head meats and cheese inside and plenty of vegetables. The price is pretty good for what you get, and it's another $1.50 for a drink and chips. Yes, a good lunch for $6, but not too far from the heart of Hawthorne. Too bad they're not open late or it would be a good reprise from Space Room or the Mt. Tabor Theater.

GINORMOUS sandwiches. High quality ingredients, Inexpensive price. If this place was next to a Subway the owner of Subway would start crying, throw his arms up in despair and then promptly go out of business.

Came here after several hours exploring the woody trails of Mount Tabor Park nearby, mostly while fat flakes of snow rained down from an overcast sky. I was hungry, wet and cold and the vegan sandwich (toasted) absolutely hit the spot! Very filling on a delicious seed-filled bread; I was planning on eating only half but ended up gobbling the whole thing down. The thinly sliced field-roast in place of meat and cheese was great, and all the rest of the veggie ingredients were fresh and crispy. I ordered avocado for an extra 50 cents but they were out, and I realized in hindsight he still charged me for it which is kind of lame; but then again when I'm only paying $6.00 in the first place I didn't really want to complain about such a minor amount. The space is very small and has a streamlined ordering system: grab a menu by the door upon entering, mark off what you want, write your name on it, give it to the folks at the counter, and then wait for your name to be called and your final sandwich delivered upon payment. An efficient and delicious system! If I lived here I'd go to this joint all the time. Highly recommend.

So, I popped in here on a Sunday afternoon and my sandwich was good. I ordered the veggie and it came with a ton of avocado, which most sandwich places can be really stingy with so I was pleasantly surprised. On a side note, I felt like I couldn't speak while in the establishment. This is neither appealing nor unappealing to me, just different. I guess I like to be greeted when I walk into any kind of business. It's just common courtesy. Even a little eye contact and smile will suffice. But, I couldn't seem to accomplish that either. The rules are clearly stated with well appointed signage, take a menu....add your name and order....hand back to the staff. Very existential like. The women working there were beautiful and I would highly recommend this spot to my single male/lesbian friends who always like to be anywhere in a 20 foot radius of attractive women. They were also playing great music and the prices were unbeatable, amazing in fact.

When it comes to a sandwich bread is the deal breaker. East Side has amazing bread from Dave's Killer bread. The first time I went here I ordered the 12 in" when they say twelve inches you really get the whole twelve inches nothing less. Inside the wonderful bread is generously filled with pretty much anything you could ask for if you choose to build your own sub. I usually go with one of their creations. I never ever leave this place feeling hungry and lucky for me I usually have a meal for the next day or a fourth meal after I recovered from the first chow session. They have fake/soy meat for us vegetarians. My partner in crime always goes with the philly or Italian sub. East Side Deli subs gives you the kind of full that you cant fathom moving after conquering and wishing you had not been wearing your hipster jeans.

  • Colleen W.

This place makes delicious, HUGE (seriously huge...not joking around huge), fresh subs. Their signature sandwiches are great but the best part is being able to create your own. They have SO many different fresh options that the combinations are literally endless. Dave's killer bread is a must. They were able to accomodate our take out order for 15 people with ease. They get an extra star for that. Note: a footlong sub will feed a pack of wolves. I don't know many people who can eat that thing in one sitting.

  • Richard A.

I can't add much that hasn't already been said, this is a rock solid sandwich place with fresh ingredients and a really tasty meal. The sandwich is just the right size and you can't beat the value. I love the staff there too, they are down to earth folks with no pretense. I appreciate that. The roast beef and swiss sandwich I had today was loaded with flavor, something you don't always see in delis.

Call it what you will: hoagie, sub, grinder, helluva-great-sandwich... I walked in a skeptic and came out an ESD addict. First of all, order HALF. I ate the full sammie "because it was there" but would have been tres content (and full) with fifty percentage of the full meal deal. They have nailed the deli sandwich. Perfect mixture of flavors and textures. 'Nuff said. Go and be happy!

My bf and I went here the other day and all I can say is...well actually we left here with not much thought. I'm vegetarian and he is not therefore we thought this would be the perfect place concidering we both LOVE sandwiches and just the idea of buliding your own for under 6 bucks really excited us...but....in the end we both had the same thoughts: 1. Dry almost old tasting bread. And we each had diff kinds. Both VERY dry. 2. Veggies were fresh and good but....again the bread really ruined the rest of the experience. 3. Also theres no air conditioning...but I guess thats hawthorne for you. 4. Hmm and why did it take soooo long when we were the only ones there?! In the end I would not come back here but I guess if your hungry and if you catch them on a day with new bread then it wouldnt be a total loss.

Kick Ass Sandwich! With everything on it, toasted or not, carb-heavy roll or killer dave's bread, they stuff yo sandwich to the max! I like the roast beef, juicy delicious. I just wish I could sit at the picnic table outside, under the comfort of the awning with my sandwich and a beer. But, they don't have beer, awww. Maybe soon. Maybe I'm the only one who wants beer with my lunch. Place your order, then bop in to the record store next door and pick up your favorite experimental music duds. Meander back into East Side, and your sandwich is ready. The white paper wrapping makes me feel like I received presents from a faraway sandwich deity. Delicious.

For those of you who gave the East Side Deli more than two stars, you must have been drunk, high, never tasted a good sandwich or any combination thereof, and, if I were any of those, perhaps my review would be much different. Having arrived as sober as a stone, I could not have been more disappointed with my order. While the funky, fun-loving atmosphere and great service was appealing, the taste of the sandwich I ordered was anything but. The dry bread was overwhelming the flavorless toppings were being systematically pushed out of the way with each bite. The macaroni salad I purchased was undercooked and as equally as tasteless. The price for a 12" sandwich could be better spent.

I have a habit of calling "East Side Deli" East Side Subs. Because they're the best at making subs and their subs are delicious. I always have pains of doubt that I'm giving East Side too much credit because of elements outside of the food. The staff are great, the way you order your sub by checking of items on a card reminds me of the way I'd order MTOs from Sheetz when I was a kid on the east coast, and they play killer music. But all those things aside, I take my sub, I head home or to my office and it is always delicious. Be you herbivore or omnivore this place has amazing eats. I've yet to find any other locale in Portland that makes a sub anywhere near as good. Also their hours are awesome. In a town that closes up shop about 9 it is great to have a place like East Side to run into for late night grub and inevitably lunch the next day. They have soups and salads too, so that's cool, but I have never had them, as I will always fall prey to the siren's sub song of theirs.

I can't believe I haven't been here before in whole year I've been in the Hawthorne Dist! This is the best deli I've found in PDX!!!! ^_^ Why???: - Fantastic hours (what other deli is open 'til 11pm!) - HUGE variety of toppings/options (delicious boars head meat and AWESOME pulled pork, Tillamook cheeses, fresh and local sub breads and Dave's Killer Break) + omnivore, vegetarian, & vegan options! - Delicious sides like antipasta, not-too-mayonaisee-mac salad, - Fair prices - no, it's not a steal at $5 subs anymore, but $6 for a 6" and $11.50 for a foot-long, it's a good price for an amazingly filling grinder that's way better than any Subway or Quiznos you've ever had!!! ***Caution: they have a very explicit and clear system for ordering subs with the menu cards. Follow it! ***Caution 2: they are so popular that if you go during peak lunch/dinner hours, expect to wait a while unless you're lucky. If you like sandwiches, you MUST try a grinder here!

I love eastside because it is like salad and a sandwich all together. Great Vegan/vegetarian options (as well as a plethora of sliced up dead animals). Having briefly worked in a sandwich shop myself, I am extremely picky about how things are made and how fresh the ingredients are. This place does it for me. I enjoy the employees and their occasionally cranky faces and their musical selections.

So i just came back from this place. I went based on yelp in fact. I sat down and looked over the menus for meat (which i love). I decided on trying one of the spacial sandwiches called the Portland cheese steak. It is listed as Roast beef marinated in a sweet savory honey bourbon sauce, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms topped with our delicious cheddar cheese & toasted to perfection. it should have been: We take BBQ sauce and cover everything in it so you can't taste anything else. Hell i couldn't find the cheese that was supposed to be there. If i had wanted no other flavors than BBQ sauce i would have gone for the pulled pork. I will not likely be going back if they can't describe food accurately. I couldn't get halfway through a 6" simply because it was too one sided. blah for this many reviews that was sad.

This is the best sandwich shop I've been to. The fact that there is an entire vegetarian menu is just the start. They stuff their sandwiches full (I always get it on Dave's Killer Bread), which is a great deal at just $6, and they are absolutely delicious. I"ve had the BBQ, the greek sandwich and the VegiCajun and all are delicious, though the greek one is pretty light and better for lunch than dinner.

I love the Ease Side Deli because: There is always killer music playing Staff is friendly and quirky Killer sandwiches, all the time Vegan and meat options galore They now have a salad menu Seriously, this is an awesome, alternative deli that you'd be silly to not check out. Unless of course you're offended by punk rock and old school hop-hop music, tattooed employees, and kick ass sammiches.

Best sandwiches in Portland, hands down!!! Don't always expect the friendliest service there; luke warm is about the best I've received, but the food is too good for that to be much of a deterrent. Great music playing, limited seating, but nice, casual atmosphere. Good prices for the size and quality of what you get. Once you have an East Side sandwich, no other sandwich will live up!!

  • Danni D.

They make sandwiches. Sure, they're pretty good. But they are sandwiches. Kind of hard to screw that up. Even harder to screw it up when they provide dry-erase build-a-sandwich ordering forms. Props for that, by the way. I prefer writing it all down to watching my sandwich maker like a hawk as his hands hover above microscopically chopped "veggies" awaiting my instructions on each and every item. That gets old. You won't have to deal with that here at ESD. Their veggies are "adult" sized, so they do not rain out of your sandwich with each bite. The shop is friendly and clean. It's close to my house, so inevitably I eat here a few times a year at least. It's just more by default than "oh my God I gotta get some of that." They are superior to any chain restaurant on the boulevard, obviously. I just never feel like I'm eating anything that I could not have made myself if I thought for a minute to, you know, buy groceries.

  • Don B.

God damn these are good sandwiches. They deliver every time. ESD is worth 5 stars easily. Huge classic grinders with loads of meat, cheese, and dressings served up by certified, bona fide punks in a chilled out east side spot. Hell yes. I don't know why I ever gave them less than 5 before. This ain't supposed to be no gourmet panini, it's a sub. A sub so big and bursting it'll make your junk envious. One full size sub is easily 2 meals, and for around $10, that's a steal. Add in that they use Boar's Head meats, Field Roast vegan "meat", thick rolls, and quality veggies, and you have a win, win, win. +1 for proximity to a liquor store and my house.

Nosh: Man, that Spicy Italian is good. Hard to pry away from it, really don't even want to even try anything else on their menu! Very big, chock full of meat and veggies (and in my case, Secret Aardvark). But $12 for a foot-long? Next the soup du jour: I had a vegetarian tomato that was quite Progresso-esque. Not terrible, not inedible, but by no means a game- changer, either. Quite mild/bland as-is, awaiting your personal modifications.... Service: Prompt, friendly, courteous....were it not for all the tats, I'd say the ol' chap was the very picture of gentility. I was a sandwhich artiste myself for a very short time in college, and am quite sure I was nowhere near this guy's level of professionalism/ Anyone coming through my door ten minutes to close wasn't gonna be catching me at my best, no doubt about it---and this I realize so many years later, to my immense shame.... of course, back in those days, leaving tips in fast food places was completely out of the question. I bet the opportunity to score a little extra loot before closing every night would have changed my attitude, somewhat... In sum: of course they get extra juice for being open late-ish (2300 hrs isn't nearly late enough for my liking, but clearly beats most other places). Their grindage here is good, but compared to the very best I've had in this category--gourmet sandwichery--- East Side Deli: Hawthorne has to bow in deference, if only a little, to the reigning champ, Shut up and Eat. SUaE's Italian's are every bit as ridiculously laden w/ingredients if not more so, are grilled w/o you having to ask, and are several dollars cheaper. No photo-finish here, it's pretty decisive....

These guys are total dicks, but make pretty good sammys. I hadn't been in awhile and when I went to pay I handed over my filled punch card only to be mocked that they quit taking them over a year ago. No apology or offer of a discount or free chips or anything. So I guess what they're saying is they don't care about customer loyalty anymore.

  • Anuj K.

Brilliant. This shack is so unassuming! If I hadn't by chance seen the yelp reviews I would have passed it all together, forever. The sandwich specials are unique and also old time favorites, from the greek with a slab (yes... a solid slab) of feta cheese to the pizza with marinara and mozzerella. Lots of create your own options too, plus they have daves killer bread (which many people have pointed out). I ended up getting the Freuben because I love sauekraut and wanted to give the fake deli sliced meats a chance. I'm not a dressing fan so I got it without the thousand island, and this proved to be helpful afterwards since the sandwich was so large I saved half of it for later and it hadn't become soggy. My friend ordered the greek and it was doused in italian dressing ( or greek dressing... I wouldn't be able to tell the difference and I like them both). I think that was her only complaint, but I thought it worked well with the amount of dressing used. I'm excited to go back soon!

I love these sandwiches. I crave the combinations of flavors. I now seem to get here a couple times a month for a sandwich fix. The six inch is plenty big for dinner - these are hearty sandwiches. I'd soooo rather pay $6 here for a six inch sub than $5 for a footlong anywhere else. Yum.

The sandwiches are great and they only use the best ingredients. However every time I go here the staff seem inconvenienced to have to do their job. I work in customer service, and these people have clearly never heard of it. I don't expect over the top cheeriness, but some acknowledgment and maybe "how are you?" would be nice. Maybe it's because I'm not a Hawthorne hipster?

The biggest, heartiest, CHEAPEST, most ingredient laden sandwich I've come across... and I'm talking about the veggie sando!! With the ability to choose from their specialty subs or build your own, I can't understand why anyone would ever go to Subway ever again!

Totally awesome! Great veggie or meat sandwich options. You fill out a card and get exactly what you want. They're huge! I got a 12-inch thinking I was really hungry and ended up getting only half way through (snack for later!). But it wasn't just stacks of meat or stacks of cheese. They're big because they put so many delicious toppings on the sandwiches. Not overkill, simply lots of good stuff and really good flavors.

I love that they are open until 11pm. I love the size of the sandwiches (and the prices). I love the ordering system. I'm disappointed with how soggy the sandwiches are (unless you order them with no sauce and wet veggies). I'm disappointed the punch cards went away. I'm disappointed with how the same sandwiches are on special every time I visit. ESD is close to home, produces a consistent product, and is open when I need them.

East Side Deli has earned it's 5 stars. I've been back to ESD 4 times since my last review and all 4 times i was pleased with my subs. I complained about the huge subs East Side Deli serves up but their paper thin cheese kinds of takes it down a notch, well Im here to say the cheese problem has been taken care of. Ordered a custom sub with pepper Jack cheese and there was a good 3 slices. Woohoo! It's great to know that ESD listens to their customers and actually put it into action. Kudos to you ESD! Best sandwiches in town. No other place can touch ESD's subs and prices.

East Side is a fail-proof method to cure hunger during a long work day. I have a labor-intense job and usually opt for baked goods to subside afternoon hunger, except when East Side is around the corner... When you walk in the door there are 3 menus to choose from: Meat-eaters, Vegi/Vegan, and Salad. Pick one- or several if you're really hungry- and use a dry-erase marker to select which sandwich you want. Alternatively, flip around the menu to create your own sandwich! Select options like bread type, cold or toasted, dressings, and as many toppings as you can handle. $6 for a 6" sandwich is an awesome deal in my book. My sandwich usually consists of half the vegetable offerings, with Field Roast (veggie meat), dijon mustard, and Veganaise. Also, the employees have always been cheerful and nothing short of 5 stars!

This place has an unique ordering system and I like the atmosphere, it's very Portland. I had Muffaletta sandwich on white bread, it was alright. I think I just have really HIGH standards for sandwiches after eating at Ike's Place in SF. I am always in search of a REALLY good sandwich and the bread is what makes it. The bread is just alright here. I am willing to give it another try and opt for something on their vegetarian menu.

Holy cow!! Why didn't I know about this gem before?! It took a too-long line at Porque No for me to mosey across the street and get the best sandwich deal in town. A $5.00 6-inch sub is HUGE (I could only finish 2/3 of it). It was almost 6 inches WIDE, for Pete's sake.... lettuce: no brown edges tomato: fresh cuke: fresh and not slimy bread: crispy and flavorful on it's own cheese and condiments: perfect amounts carrots: freshly grated low-sodium turkey: yum. better than the full-salt kind. Did I happen to mention the veggies are perfectly fresh, crisp and non-wilted? And choices, choices, choices....I *love* being able to build my own sandwich. My dining companion got the foot-long for $9.50, had them leave the condiments off of 1/2 of it, and wrap the halves separately so he could eat the other one for lunch the next day. This means he got two meals, each for $4.75. It's almost orgasmic.....

After hearing a number of raves about East Side Deli I finally gave it a go. I ordered the Portland Cheesesteak Sandwich. I appreciate the fact that East Side Deli is doing something unique and expressly not doing a knock off of the Philly Cheesesteak. The Portland Cheesesteak Sandwich was served on a thick 6" but, it had a generous serving of roast beef drenched in bourbon honey BBQ saue with onion, pepper and boars head cheese. I found this sandwich to be quite delicious and extremely filling with great flavor. We got our sandwiches quickly and everyone in our group enjoyed their sandwiches (other things ordered include The Ruben and a make your own sub). Friendly staff, good food, and a great value. This is definitely a place to stop for lunch.

Holy crap, I just realized that I didn't give them 5 stars before! What was I thinking? Oh, poor naive past self. I eat here almost once a week, and I have to really restrain myself from just going there all the time. The food is just amazingly delicious. I consider myself pretty good at concocting a sandwitch - all it takes is good bread, good meat, and good other toppings. But why do it myself, when East Side will do it for me? It's seriously the highest compliment I think I could pay that it tastes exactly like something I would make for myself. The ingredients are all high quality and heaped on with generous abandon. I swear I will never be able to be satisfied by Subway again. East Side has stolen my heart.

my favorite sandwich in portland. dreamt about when i could have it again since the first time i went years ago, before i moved here. still crave it always! don't bother with the hoagie roll. meh. get your sandwich on dave's killer bread. SO much better. i like to pile mine high with as many veggies as i can. yeah, it drips, as some reviewers have noted. that's what i LOVE about it. the veggies are always super fresh, and the meat and cheese is boar's head (which is as good as it gets). granted, the sandwich doesn't necessarily keep very well in the fridge overnight due to said dripping, but if you eat whatever you have left -- if anything is left! -- in the same day it's usually fine. i don't think you can really judge the quality of a FRESH sandwich by how soggy it gets when you leave it for leftovers ;) they pile on the ingredients high. no subway-style skimping here. in a nutshell...fave. FAVE! no complaints.

I drove from deep westside to grab a couple subs for my boyfriend and I from this place. We both love a good Italian sub. I came during a lunch rush, my bad. I made the mistake of only filling out one order card for both my subs, since they were exactly the same. Wow! The uber snotty sammy maker called me back to counter, loudly bit my head off regarding proper ordering technique in front of the huge lunch crowd. I was so humiliated, I don't even know why I stayed. I will never go there again. The sub was pretty delicious but not worth the public humiliation I was served.

I'm setting up a dedicated payroll deduction to instantly route $35 a week into a special account to fund my eating there seven days a week. I love this place. They do it right. I've been three times in five days. Where to begin... It is really easy to spend $6-7 on a crappy sandwich just about anywhere. Don't even get me started on Subway, which is dead to me. So to find a fresh hero stacked sky-high with better-than-average, quality ingredients for $5 has pretty much been the highlight of my month (so far). The six-incher for five smackers is plenty big. I can barely get my mouth around these things. The peeps there take pride in stacking 'em as high as they can go and will likely hold it up and show it to you first before wrapping it up. Love the dry-erase marker order form. You can customize your sandwich any way you please or flip it over to see a full page of killer sammies with everything but the kitchen sink included. The bread. is. awesome. I tried the Dave's Killer once, and while I do enjoy that bread in general, it was just too thin to contain the pound of goodies between its slices and kind of fell apart. Go with the classic white, let's just be honest here. And Field Roast?! Are you kidding me? That's awesome! And they're not shy with it, either. The amount they put on a six-inch will cost you about $3.50-$4 just for the Field Roast at Food Fight, probably $5 at New Season's. Also featuring Boar's Head meats, they've pretty much got any sandwich you can think of covered. East Side, you are my new fav. (And thanks for the free extra stamp on my frequent eater card for saying I was in love with your sandwich man working the other night. I was not kidding, though.)

When I first tried East Side Deli almost three years ago I thought it was horrible. The bread the used to serve their sandwiches one was big and bulky, all you tasted was this dry bread, none of the filling. Well thankfully things have changed. I hadn't been back since my first trip 3 years ago, but I tired it again about a month ago, I have since been back at least once a week since then. This place has really turned things around. Their sandwiches are filled with great meats and fresh veggies to the point that the sandwich is almost bursting apart. The new bread they use is moist and not over the top. It really has made a complete 180 since my first visit and is slowly becoming one of my favorite sandwich shops in town.

Another BBQ sandwich, another phenomenal experience. This time around I topped by vegan BBQ with slaw and pepper jack cheese. Boy was it tasty. The service was prompt and friendly, and I left with a very full stomach. I will probably be craving the sandwich in just a couple days and will definitely return soon!

My favorite sandwich shop! I love to come here for lunch then walk up and down the rest of Hawthorne. I have never had a bad sandwich here or bad service. It's a bit small but It's still awesome.

Oh my gaaaah.. I about fainted from a foodgasm as I crunched into my Frueben (field roast reuben). There has been few times in my life where I have loved a fake reuben. This was amazing, satisfying, delicious & fulfilling!! Definitely going to be a new hangout, as I'm new in town & live a few blocks away. Can't wait to try out some different versions with field roast.

I could tell you the story of how I learned about this place, but instead I'll tell you the story of when I took my friend there. I had raved a bit about how amazing it was to her both to get her to come along and as we went there. She seemed to have a "smile and nod" attitude. Two bites into her sandwich, she says "Rich, I have to apologize, I was willing to come here, because it's hard to get a bad sandwich from a deli, but I didn't believe or understand how great you thought this place was...until now." Weeks later, she calls me and says she took a friend there, and her friend did the same exact thing. It's not a date place, it's not an evening out, but if you need a sandwich that you'll really appreciate at a good price, I endorse this place. Doesn't hurt that Angelo's (bar next door) doesn't seem to mind you bringing your ESD food over.

The Portland Cheesesteak was good and tasted like barbeque. It is nothing like a Philly cheesesteak, but it isn't supposed to. Muffaletta is also good.

Best. Subs. Ever. My husband has gotten me hooked on this place. You seriously can't go wrong regardless of what you order. Personally, I couldn't ever eat more than a 6" because these things are huge, but what the heck, this is America! Gorge out if you want. There is a counter inside with a stack of order forms. It contains a lengthy list of amazing sandwiches and what they all include...but maybe that's not enough. Maybe you are the kind of person who looks at a list of mouth-watering sandwiches and thinks, "Eh, I could do better." You are in luck. Their order form is double sided. If you think you can one-up their creations, you can specify each and every thing you want on your sandwich on the back side of the form. If you do that, make sure you fill out everything - even the parts where you say you don't want something. These people have eagle eyes. The minute you hand them your form, they will immediately zero in on what you left off and ask you about it. They have many excellent beverage selections and great Tim's chips. In a hurry? You can call ahead with your order!!!!! This place is easy to miss because their signage on the street is a sandwich board (no pun intended). Best thing is to keep an eye out for Por Que No? This place is directly across the street next to the liquor store.

Not sure what I was expecting but this wasn't it. Yelped for the Ruben sandwich my hubby was craving (normal spot closed for the day) and from the menu on line we figured we'd give it a shot. I had the Portland Cheese steak and loved it - spouse thought it was a bit too sweet for him for a sandwich. I was very happy. His Ruben was a miss for both of us - we both misunderstood how the 6" or 12" one sandwich or two the maker was explaining and was confused/surprised when our meal showed up. Second, the kraut was meh, and we both like Rubens hot. We'll keep this place in mind for another time but not for Rubens. And, this is my housekeeping....cobwebs on the light fixtures. They are there on all of them and it always makes me wonder what else they don't clean off like twice a year???

Not only is this place the BEST sandwich shop I've ever encountered (killer music, local art, friendly staff), but they offer a large selection for vegans & vegetarians to get the most out of their subs. At other shops, I struggle with paying $6+ for mediocre bread, a slice of cheese and a few sprinkles of soggy veggies. East side, on the other hand.. $6 for a MONSTER sub: Drizzled in sauces to die for, toasted on artisan bread, jam packed with vegan field roast and multiple slices of cheese and every fresh veggie you can think of. Every time, I can hardly fit my mouth around the sub, I don't even care if it ends up all over my face and clothes; it's a total MANWICH! Oh, and bonus for us littles, I always have leftovers for work the next day! The last 2 times I've gone, I treated myself to their homemade macaroni salad... it's the best I've ever tasted. New addiction! My Carnivorous boyfriend and I can both happily dine here for cheapz... as we transcend into sandwich heaven, dimension #5.

First to our Portland Don, Don B. for not ever steering me wrong with your reviews. You are a mighty yelper and we are not worthy of your knowledge. Sometimes all you want is a a damn good deli sandwich. Sometimes, you google, yelp, bing ::insert nouns turned to verbs here:: to find a nearby need. Being on the east side and already having driven back and forth from Clinton to Sunnyside we decided, meh let's go back to Woodstock for lunch...oh wait there's only one deli on Woodstock and it looks small? Hmmm...do we venture to downtown for Elephants? No. Where oh where shall we go?! East Side Deli...that's where. and BOOYAH. Great, big ol' sandwiches at a brilliant price. Walk in and find the laminated cards to mark off what you want, add your name and drop off at the counter. You can choose from menued sandwiches or you can build your own. Pay once your name is called. Enjoy. Oh and if you order the full sub--you're taking it home for later--even you big boy. The staff is super friendly too! Outdoor seating--yes Sweet Tea in a can--yes Awesome 90's music that the man enjoys and comments on--for the win.

I'm a big fan of the build-your-own here. You can get exactly what you're in the mood for. I highly recommend the cajun mayo as a condiment. And be sure to polish it off with a Coca de Mexico. Usually much less crowded than ¿Por que no? across the street. But different cuisine as well...

I have a lot of experiences with muff. I went here for a great sandwich; the cool chick recommended the muffaletta; i loved this muff. A very special muff; feta cheese, cucumbers, fricking outstanding. If there muff is this good, i'm gonna eat muff more often.

Disclaimer: I'm a vegetarian... The Good: The Veggie Field Dip is a great sandwich. I've really grown to love this over the past few months. Haven't had a 'French Dip' since I was a kid and this was a welcome perk. The BAD: They don't take down phone orders to pickup very well and have not once... but twice screwed it up. Each time, I've gotten home and looking forward to my vegetarian field dip only to realize they've given me a real french dip. As a place that flaunts their extensive vegetarian-friendly menu... it's really discouraging to have them translate, "The veggie field dip" to "normal meat french dip." Vegetarians be warned! It makes it hard for me to want to go back. From now on, i'll go in and order in person and make sure they take the order right. To the people working there... try to be more mindful. UPDATE... I went back today to get a sandwich (in person) and the owner recognized my name and asked me if I was the person who posted the review above. I said yes... and he said he was planning to get in touch with me about the problem. He ended up buying my lunch and said they were putting in new phones and a better order form internally so that they avoid problems like this in the future. Kudos to them..

When people ask me for a good place to eat in my neighborhood, this will always be the first place i think of. I love a good sandwich and they do it right here. For six bucks you can get a six inch sub that wieghs in at probably near two pounds, loaded to overflowing with meat and veggies. They don't skimp on their veggies - or anything else for that matter. I'm the kind of person that will order the biggest item on the menu and proceed to finish my companion's meals as well, yet I have always left this place stuffed to the point of pain. No pretension, nothing fancy, just really tasty food in silly proportions.

I love East Side Delicatessen! Their sandwiches are delicious and huge. They just might make the best sandwich / sub I've ever had! At first I was worried because it appeared a foot long costs $10. I thought $10 was a little high for one meal. I finally tried a $10 foot long and it was a monster! I could barely eat half because there was so much food, and the one sandwich was two delicious meals. The foot long is more than enough food for two people. They have a big selection of breads, meats, veggies, and condiments to choose from. They use high quality, fresh, & local ingredients. The sandwich came out fast. I placed my order and only had to wait two minutes. The $5 sandwich here is big, equal to or bigger than a Subway foot long. It is much better than Subway, and East Side has become my favorite lunch spot. I highly recommend them!

Yummmm!! Okay so this place is great! They're kind of hidden in one of those strip mall lots that you wouldn't normally think to go into unless you needed to go to the liquor store (which there is one in this lot and it's great!) But you walk in and they have their menus on the left all laminated with expo pens (yay for saving trees!) you pick what you want and you can literally get anything. Vegan non vegan sandwiches and salads. and even ask what their soup of the day is! My salad was $6.50 and it lasted me two meals. it came in a togo container and it was so full I had to put the stuff into another bowl so I could mix it! I was able to save half for later. it was so large. The sandwiches are really large to. A6 inch from subway is tiny. a 6 inch form here is like a footlong from subway! It's a lot of food and they really put a lot of stuff inside of it. I can't wait to go back.

REALLY?? $13 for a 12" sub? I really don't care that it's Boar's Head meats...that's too much for a sub. You can take your hipster-wannabe sub shop and capitalize on the developments moving in and the idiocy of $13 for a Sandwhich. I'll go to Jimmy John's.

**Fiance** (!!) and I stopped here for lunch at the recommendation of a friend. I ordered the 6" special of the day which was a jerk turkey banh mi and he ordered the 6" sweet hot mess. My banh mi was great! Great flavors, fresh veggies, nice balance. The sweet hot mess was HUGE and loaded with meat, which in my opinion tasted like teriyaki beef jerky. I couldn't even tell there were vegetables on it because the meat flavor was so overpowering. I don't think I could have eaten more than a few bites. The sandwiches were a little pricey, but you get a decent amount of filings in each sandwich. The space inside is small and we had just squeezed into the last couple seats at the counter before a swarm of people came in. Ordering system is convenient and they cater to vegetarian and vegans. If I'm back in the area I'd try this place again.

They're vegan-friendly, cost-effective, & while not gourmet in the slightest, East Side Delicatessen provides prompt, engaging service along with well-portioned, comfort-food-style sandwiches.

  • Aj D.

I just ate the mother of all sandwiches. Everything about it was incredible. Yes, they are expensive, but the two halves of the 12" are wrapped separately, and each half is pretty much a full meal. Pro tip: get the Asiago bun. It's cut on one side so it'll hold all the good stuff in instead of falling all over the place.

I loved this place, their sandwiches are awesome. Too bad the service sucks. I called in my order because I was short on time. Get there ten minutes later, wait for another 12. Find out they hadn't even started my sandwich. They weren't busy either. They were messing around laughing, sitting down with guests. Good customer service is so hard to come by now days..

Sometimes you just need to go back and reassess. Don't know why but the Italian sandwich just took it to the next level. It could be the delicious Boarhead meats or the ultra fresh veggies, pepperchinis or the huge size you get for $6? I always jam (figuratively) to the music, today it was Sweet Child O Mine. The sandwich had olives, onions , mayo and health dose of spicy mustard. Finally, the people working there are so cool, friendly and true sandwich artists! Yes, this place is so good!

**READ** It was my first time at the deli and and was skeptical how good the sandwiches would be. The only thing that pissed me off were the employees. They acted like snobby little girls because I hadn't tipped them at my first visit there. On my way out They made a sour remark that I overheard about not tipping and in the end of my sandwich I found a piece of hair. Thank god I found it before I ate it. You guys tried to get me! But you couldn't fool me! If you don't tip you basically will be punished.

A good, solid sandwich is what I expected, and that is exactly what I got. An Italian Sub with lots of good meat, cheese, olive oil and vinegar. When one finds out about a good hole in the wall place, one goes. I've seen a few of my fellow Yelpers check in here and a few more of my friends on here have written up this place. They all like it and agree no $5 sub can compare. I've been over in this area and even had East Side bookmarked to try. But it wasn't until a friend of mine suggested we go eat there that I had the opportunity. I'm glad I finally got over here to try it out. I got the six inch sub and believe me, I was full after that. It's good thing we went over to a nearby park to eat, because I needed to walk it of if I was to make it the rest of the day. They cater to the meat eaters, the veg heads and the vegan crowd. So everyone is happy. Big food, big appetite, big thumbs up!! Enjoy.

I..love...this...deli. I honestly haven't seen that many delis here since moving from the East Coast where they are a dime a dozen, but this place does it right. Everybody knows Boar's Head meat is some pretty primo stuff and that's just what this place serves, but they also do vegetarian and vegan, of course. Just come in, grab a card and fill out your own custom order or choose one of the ESD's signature sandwiches, give it to the person behind the counter and wait for your name to be called. All of their breads and veggies are local and they also do salads and soups. I shared the "East Side Italian" 12" sub with my boyfriend and that thing was gigantic in size AND flavor...puts Subway to shame. Both ladies working here the day we made our first visit were super friendly and patient despite the chaotic circumstances with it being lunch hour and all. I will definitely be back soon to try a different sandwich and recommend you try one if you're in the area...Delis like this are a little rare in these parts!

A surprisingly good stop. You order by taking a dry-erase card and checking off what you want. For people who like to custom order their sandwiches (me!) this is great. I was a little apprehensive about trying the Field Roast. Fake meat products generally gross me out, but I went to Field Roast's website and saw there was no "textured soy protein" or any fake meat -- instead their deli slices are made of veggies, grains and beans, which sounded good. So I went ahead and tried it and boy am I glad I did. I ordered a custom sub and it came with veggies stacked high and several slices of Field Roast. The Field Roast was slightly on the dry side, which I liked, and had sort of a subtle smokey flavor. With chips and a bottle of root beer, it was $9.50 for everything. Bargain! Tip: This place is tiny. The parking lot is really small, so when it's busy, you may have trouble finding a spot. It's quite small inside, with the only real seating being at a counter that faces out the window. There are three picnic benches outside.

This place makes a mean sandwich! That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. A 6" will fill up even the hungriest! Don't plan on eating it in your car. This is a two-hander and will probably drip. You need to be sitting down and focused. I tend to go for the Italian sandwiches. Today I had the special Spicy Italian, it was spicy! It was Italian! It was delicious! Their ingredients are high quality, Boars Head. They also have vegetarian options. Their Buffalo Soldier is made with soy curls and my very un-vegetarian husband loves it. I never thought I'd see the day he'd order soy curls. In addition to sandwiches they have a few deli salads, giant pickles (yum), chips, cookies/brownies/cheesecake and both regular sodas and hippy dippy drinks (I got Yerba Mate). Highly recommended when you're looking for a REAL sandwich!

Best sandwiches ever...no, literally. Tons of vegan and vegetarian options. I recommend getting the 6" sliced bread as it's so fresh and tasty! Huge sandwiches and FRESH fix-en's...definitely worth the money.

These are some A-0K sandos! I came here expecting to be blown away but I got a sandwich that was perfectly done but not mind-blowing. I like the dry erase ordering menus, makes it easy to get the very specific deets out there without having to verbalize my crazy ideas for what makes my sando perfect. The place is clean but not too welcoming to sit at counter high chairs, not my style, at least they have seating unlike Devil's Dill but I'm a ToGo kinda guy anyway. They do have a convenient location though for when you're just in need a sando fix whilst in the Hawthorne environs, but it's not an out of my way go to place. Blah, Blah, Blah. Eat more sandwich!

I dream of these sandwiches. Remember that place in college, just off campus that had the best sandwiches? Remember that sandwich that you had on vacation that you can't get out of your head? This is that place in Portland. In fact, being next to a liquor store and a record store, this place is a perfect afternoon. And, for folks with kids, this place scores high on the kid friendly scale. Yummy, smaller portions of the same thing that you're eating on sliced bread for a lower price.

My boyfriend (an omnivore) and I (a vegetarian) have been going here for years. I send him over to pick us up some reubens. Genius boyfriend forgets to mention *veggie* reuben, which I only find out after we get home. We drive about 30 min all the way back to get a veggie reuben...and they give it to me for free. Now that's a deli. I don't miss meat at all.

Been going here for years to get subs. I was out of the country for a month and when I got back this was the first place I went. Nothing felt more like coming hime than visiting east side deli on hawthorne. The staff is so friendly, they are always playing the best music and the subs and sandwiches are the best in the city. I have a special place in my heart for this place and will always leave a fat tip. Dude with grey hair is the MVP but everyone who works there is a winner.

Instructions: 1. Fill out the order forms near the door. 2. Walk form over to the food counter to be made. 3. Select your beverage, sides, desserts and perhaps, ginormous pickle. 4. Wait to hear name called. 5. Hear name called and go up to register to pay. 6. Grab napkins and enjoy. I was a little out of it when I went so I felt a little silly when I couldn't follow the instructions on the large overhead board so hopefully this saves some people a little bit of embarrassment. It's a small place so be prepared to take your sandwich outside or back home. The 12" sandwiches are no joke and should only be ordered by those with extreme hunger or those planning ahead for delicious sandwichness at a later meal.

Really enjoyed my sandwich here! I got a vegetarian sandwich where they let you put whatever you'd like on it. The vegan meat substitute was delicious! And I love how they don't skimp out on anything. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth!

Love it. Every sandwich I've had has been huge and delicious. And for the price, you really can't beat this place in Portland. I like the way the ordering system is set up too-- you fill out a sheet with your order and whatever you want done to you sandwich, stick it on the counter, and wait, which isn't ever too long. There isn't a lot of seating, especially inside, but I typically take it home anyway.

I am scouting eating spots for my upcoming weekend with some cousins, and I thought I would try the Eastside Deli (Hawthorne location). I need to get sandwiches to take on a Gorge Hike. After all the glowing reviews, I thought I had hit the mother lode on the first try. Sadly, that is not what I found. First, the positives: The service was great. As a newbie, I didn't understand how the whole ordering things worked, I guess. I was ordering a veggie sandwich...the menu said adding cheese was an option but there was not a spot designated for it. So, I asked at the sandwich-making-bar, and got friendly answers. The service was quick and courteous. The negatives: I took my sandwich away, ready to write a great review. Unfortunately, the sandwich was not all that good. The baguette is too thick and really boring white bread...not a crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, delight...but like eating Wonder Bread in massive form. Disappointing. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful, but the amount of avocado was negligible. There was a bit of honey mustard dressing, but not enough. There was no seasoning...no salt and pepper. So the result was drab all around. Oh how I wanted to love it. The search for the perfect sandwich place goes on...

Not giving it a one star only because they have boars head meet other than that I don't recommend going to this place for lunch the staff is really rude not very helpful for people that I've never ordered before because of their on structured method of ordering food

Came here for a late night sandwich and was not disappointed. Loved being able to customize our sandwiches. Good/fast/friendly service. Didn't seem expensive to me. Two sandwiches, two bags of chips, one drink, one huge Rice Krispies treat for $20. Lots of options are great. Not much of an on site eating place in my opinion. Not many seating options. Great for pick up!

I love that this place is open late. Everyone gets food cravings late at night, and East Side hit the spot. This is definitely a sandwich shop with an attitude--a good one. I loved the eclectic group of people, the hard rock music and the location. Not to mention that the sandwich was delicious and filling!

As humans, we waste the shit out of our words. It's sad. We use words like "awesome" and "wonderful" like they're candy. It was awesome? Really? It inspired awe? It was wonderful? Are you serious? It was full of wonder? You use the word "amazing" to describe a goddamn sandwich at Eastside Deli. What's going to happen on your wedding day, or when your first child is born? How will you describe it? You already wasted "amazing" on a fucking sandwich. Fuck, this sandwich is amazing.it really is.

yes.... East Side Deli makes great sandwiches. I lived down by the Hawthorne Fred's for a few years and shamefully I didn't try this place until the last year I lived in that house. As I reflect on those first few years there, I know see it as a massive waste of time not getting my ass over and into this fabulous deli. They have some great sandwiches and they are huge. Enough for one massive meal or for one substantial meal and leftovers for a later time. I did enjoy their cookies and brownies as well. It was quite nice that they were open late, too, for those late night after bar hungers... Keep it up, Sandwich Homies.

What's with the customer service? No one said "hi" to me, in fact they couldn't even stop talking to each other long enough to answer my questions. When my sandwiches were done I watched them sit on the counter for over 5 minutes, no one called my name. I guess it would be too much for them to actually speak to a customer. WTF? Doesn't matter what the sandwich tastes like if the service is offensive. I visited at 11am 3/7/14.

I swear they are making their huge sandwiches even huger - even half is huge. Granted, they use a thick sub roll, but still - at least 2 meals there! My current fave is the VegItalian with piles of fake meat, pepperocinis, tomato, lettuce, etc etc plus tasty dressing. And cheese. Staff is always friendly, and love the punk rock vibe!

Hey East Side Deli, just because hipster Yelpers declare Boar's Head meats as too mainstream now doesn't mean it tastes bad. Not every sandwich has to be made from eco-friendly-water-wheel-milled-organic grain and free-range-cage-free lettuce and tomatoes. You taste good. You just keep doing what you're doing. Now you Yelpers can tailor this very Yelp review to your own liking! Just fill in the blanks. 1. choose one: lunch, dinner, breakfast, after coitus meal, weed 2. day of week and time of day 3. adjective 4. choose one: cute 5. name of sandwich 6. adjective 7: adjective 8. choose one: recommend 9: type of acquaintance I came in for [1] on [2]. Decent food If you don't care about some of the staffs crap attitude about having to serve you. Thank you so much for helping me, I'm forever grateful and so sorry to interrupt whatever it was you were doing that wasn't related to the job you are being paid to do. Sincerely, I'm grateful for your kindness. I hope your book gets published and or your band makes it big. Totally refraining from using the H word, but hopefully you got the point. Tip heavy in advance and pay attention to the shift in servers attitude after you do so. it's classic... OR say screw it and eat someplace else. Plenty of good places to grab a sandy without the bs.

For 2+ years, I was going to this place at least once a week for their consistently fat fresh sammies, like a deeply afflicted crack addict, happy to get my fix on... Sadly, over the last several months though, there has been a very noticeable shift in consistency and/or care in their sandwich making in general. Roll the dice, cause you never know what you might get... I always order mine toasted, but one day it was fat, but very burned on the edges and cold on the inside. The next time, I go it's not toasted, and SKIMPY ..actually felt hungry afterwards. *sigh* Wish they would load 'em like they used to.

DAMN! These sandwiches are better than any $5 dollar sub around. So word to the wise the big sandwich is enough for three meals. The sandwich rings in at about $6 but for boars head meat, and the amount of meat you can't beat this deal. I got a pastrami and a Portland cheesesteak. The pastrami was the star. This sandwich comes on Dave's killer bread with a pretty good chunk of meat throw in, sauerkraut, and some sauce. There's nothing better than biting into a well thought out sandwich where each layer builds. Also that there is enough crunch to satisfy the textural side of things. The Portland cheesesteak was a decent sandwich. Again the meat shoved in these sandwiches is over the top which makes you want more. The sauce may have been a bit much but not something to leave off just next time may ask to go easy on it. There are some many sandwich options that I'm already planning my next attack.

Decent sandwich place with all the fixins. Customer service is pretty non-existent from what I experienced. Sandwiches are expensive (but yummy!). Takes a while to actually get them. I admit I went here on a hot day, so maybe it was more busy than usual. Por Que No? seemed to be swarmed and putting out product, while East Side Deli was trying their best to pump out some sandwiches to people that were seated when I got there. I appreciate that they wrap the 6 inch portions separately when ordering a 12 inch sandwich. It helped turn this into 2 meals. However, I only found it to be a step or two above Jimmy Johns for twice the price. Don't hate.

I LOVE THIS DELI!!! There is nothing I hate more than a Subway sandwich... and you better believe East Side Deli has surpassed those terrible subs by a thousand miles. 6.50$ for a "half" sandwich... which is as big as my head. 12$ for a gigantic sandwich that could feed a family. My hubs and I go here often.. spend about 13$ and are too full and have leftovers... Oh... by the way... they have a FULL VEGAN MENU! duh.. why else would I be eating here on the regular? They use Field Roast Deli slices for us vegans and that stuff is delicious. That said... this place is perfect for a group of mixed diet type people... like my husband and I. I've been to all the East Side locations and this one is my favorite.. They have tons of personality and friendly employees as well as a bunch of awesome art on the walls. Plus, they are typically playing some awesome music.

This is a generous three stars. The menu is pretty diverse, namely for the veggie subs. And the build your own option is appealing. I totally would give it another shot based on the variety of options. The atmosphere is cool, well in a Portland way, with funk music blaring and the sandwich makers and cashiers singing and grooving to it. You fill out a plastic menu, drop it off on the sandwich line, and wait to be calle dot the register to pay. I would think that the repetitive handling of the menus by customers, to the sandwich makers, and back to the customers might be a bit fomite-rich, but who knows. The veggie reuben sandwich (add avocado) was so-so. The sauerkraut and scant avocado ($1 extra) were tasty. But the fake meat was not at all appetizing. And I'm generally very pro fake meat. It is the worst aspect of the sandwich. You can upgrade to a combo meal for a few bucks more. The prices are on the cheap end (e.g. $6.50), which is decent for a lunch. Every time someone paid, the cashier said "thanks man." I guess it is just Portland being Portland, but I don't like it when people way younger than me address me as "man." I prefer dude, duder, his dudeness, or el duderido, sir, or nothing at all.

I can't recommend their food enough. Fresh, high quality ingredients make such a huge difference in a sandwich. The outdoor benches are great when the weather is nice but you'll probably want to take your sandwich with you when it's too cold to sit outside. I hope they eventually expand or move to a different location so they can have some decent indoor seating.

I just don't understand the hype about this place. The bread is dry IMO, and the sandwiches are way too big to eat. There just really isn't anything special about it. It's just a sandwich the way you make it. Nothin' to it.

  • Mark B.

They have no ice for the drinks. When that is the worst thing you can say about a place, it's got to be good! My 6" sandwich was something Subway would only dream off, hearty, extra tasty, and fresh. The wheat bread was substantial and flavorful. I love my meat (don't tell the wife, on the other hand tell her a lot) and here they give it to me just like I like it, fresh and tasty. I ain't no vegetarian but they've got the plant eaters covered also. The goto sandwich shop on the SE side.

This place is a hole in the wall. They even have a hole in the wall that they ostensibly use to take orders and hand out sandwiches. I asked the owner of Saavy Plus where to get lunch around those parts. She excitedly gave me multiple suggestions, but in the end I had my cold little heart set on Eastside. And color me pleased I did! Check this place out! They have their menu on fun plastic menus, so I grabbed a purple pen and began marking away on the "meat menu" (they have a whole 'nother menu just for non-meat sandwhiches!). Roast beef, whole wheat roll, swiss, lettice, tomato, pickle slices, pepper, mayo, mustard and horseradish. So so so so good! I got a side fancy tea and potato salad from the fridge -because I really wanted to enjoy the whole experience fully - so I went all out vs the add chips & can soda for an extra $1.50 which is more my (cheap) style. The hip young people behid the counter were fun and helpful. I really wasnt sure how much it was gonna cost, and menus with prices are not obvious.. and I just didn't feel like asking questions so I dove in blind. When I told him I had never been there but drove by the Lombard location all the time, he gave me a knowing comment that led me to believe I picked the right one... and that perhaps the sandwiches might be bigger at this location. The sandwich, potato salad and tea were $16.00. That's pricy for me, for lunch. But I had read the reviews and knew I'd probably be eating it in two meals. They wrapped it in two halves I had a little over a quarter of the sandwich and a third of the salad and couldnt eat any more without getting too full. About 2 hours later, I ate the other half (of my half) and was more than satisfied. I split the second half with a friend the next day - so it was really 4 meals! This is - hands down - the best deli sandwich I've had in Portland so far! So, I'm giving it 5 stars - but in all honesty there are things I would/might change: I would prefer to be able to sit and enjoy my sammy there at a table, but that's not really an option as they only have a couple stools - bar style, and very little room. That, and more meat (even though it's huge already, there can never be enough meat). And I'm not certain I wouldnt prefer a different bread. I was not at all unhappy with the wheat roll, but I'm just wondering. And tomorrow, when I finish my hoagie, I'll see how well the bread holds up. (mushy - just like you figured it would be). I can't wait to eat the other half of my meal! But next time, I get the 6".

I'm only writing this because of a terrible experience I had at Hawthorne location which ended in getting sick. In short: * One of the employees was talking loudly about how he 'wasn't sure if we was actually sick, or just had a bad sore throat'. Keep it to yourself, bud. * When you make a sandwich or any food you shouldn't even be talking, because you spit all over the food. The guy who made my sandwich talked to the other employee the whole time loudly and verbosely about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. Then I took a look around. Place was disgusting behind the bar. An hour after eating their creation, painful projectile in Best Buy. Not again.

Big sandwiches. Fresh, delicious sandwiches. There's not much more you need to know than that, but I'll share a bit more. When we went to East Side Deli, based on my quest for a delicious sandwich for lunch and stellar Yelp reviews, we headed over to Hawthorne not knowing much else. Here's how it works: Grab a dry-erase menu and marker by the door, fill out what you want AND YOUR NAME (they didn't make one of the sandwiches in our group because she forgot her name, so we had to go to the counter and ask what was going on and then they made the sandwich). Overall, good food. Their vegan fake meat was good. The sandwich was great tasting and messy and filling. I left satisfied.

The first time I was shown the glory of East Side Deli was comparable to a religious conversion. I'm now a sandwich fundamentalist and refuse to eat sandwiches at any other place. I even have the button on my laptop bag to constantly insert East Side into my subconscious.

Okay, my review is based on my 1 experience here, but I don't plan to return. I ordered their version of a muffaletta. I order a muffaletta whenever it's on the menu. None live up to the New Orleans original, but this one was easily the worst. No attempt to make it authentic or good. Ham, cheese, french roll, and a ton of cheap sliced black olives do NOT make a muffaletta. GREEN olive tapenade, a couple varieties of salami, and a dense round of bread. My 3 other companions rated their sandwiches a little better, but...For photos of what a muffaletta should look like and include, check out the Central Grocery in N.O. yelp.com/biz/central-gro…

I don't rate service, ambiance, cleanliness and wait times; they are too variable. I can put up with anything if the food is good. It is all about the food- that's it. All of my ratings are based on vegan options only. Notes: So one thing I do give an applause to is that they put more than 2 slices of "meat" in there, unlike most places. However! I expected this place to be like Brass Tacks quality, and I was definitely let down. It's not bad.. it's just one of those places that if you went out and bought the same ingredients to make a sandwich at home.. it would taste exactly the same. If your like me, you like to go out to eat because of something so damn good that you can't quite figure out how to make and you don't care to try.

Let me preface this by saying that I 'love' a good deli. Unique breads, savory meats, a delicious combination of veggies, if that's what one wants... all this is what I expect from a good deli. What I got was...something else. In short, it is merely OK for what it is, but all you are getting is Kroger/Fred Meyer sandwiches. Yes, their meats and cheeses 'are' Boars' Head, which is their premier deli brand, but if I wanted freaking Freddy's, I'd go to Freddy's. Meh ambiance and lukewarm water in the dispenser. At least the staff was polite. I've just never been to a deli that openly sold grocery store deli fare. It was kind of off-putting.

East Side Delicatessen = Easily Scrumptiously Devourable Known for using local ingredients and supporting local business, East Side Delicatessen generates ginormous sammies. It's no wonder that their motto is "BIG FAT F*CKIN' SANDWICHES .... AND ON THE SERIOUS CHEAP" [decor] Hole-in-the-wall establishment with random items. There is seating available outside, but also a couple bar stools at a counter as well as a 4 top at the corner of the store. What's kinda cool is that the table is engraved with their logo ( yelp.com/biz_photos/east… ) [devour] When you walk in, there's a bunch of laminated cards where you can CUSTOMIZE your sammie. Or you can opt to select one of their pre-made specials. I opted for one of their specials. *EAST SIDE ITALIAN (6 inch sub: $6; ***5 STARS***) - made with smoked ham and turkey as well as genoa salami it was a carnivore heaven. Provolone cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and red onions, an abundant amount of pepperocini and olives, dressed with mayo, deli mustard, a balsamic vinaigrette, olive oil, some Italian seasonings and last but not least - salt & pepper. I also added sliced avocados to my sammie (50 cents more for 6 inch subs). The monstrous sammie (even as a 6 inch) was ginormous! A whole sub can actually be a good meal for two people. Or if you're a hungry guy you can probably devour the whole thing. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/east… ) *FUDGE COOKIE ($1; ***3 STARS***) - I thought the texture of the cookie was great, but the fudge that was used didn't seem to flow quite well for me. I wasn't too fond of it and donated the rest of my cookie to my hungry friend. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/east… ) FYI = -Parking lot available, but if it's full you can park on the street or neighborhood streets -Accepts CC's -One unisex bathroom -Picnic patio tables (~4) outside of establishment -Open DAILY 11 AM - 11 PM -Nearest intersection: SE 47th & Hawthorne -Vegan options and children options available -Salads, cookies, brownies, sodas also available -T-shirt memorabilia and pins also available If you would like to try a Portlandia's version of Subway, where you'll find local ingredients, check out East Side Deli! Really cool neighborhood sandwich shop! They have salads and vegetarian stuff, a lot to choose from. I love my sandwich every time, the only thing that annoys me is when I'm hungry and have to wait up to 15-20 minutes sometimes. Lol, but that's obviously not that bad, that's just the only reason I'm giving them 4 stars. Get the 6 inch sandwich for lunch and you'll be set for most of the day. Pretty good prices as well! I'm guilty for being here about three times in the past week and a half...oops.

Grabbed a sandwich to go. Pastrami on rye. I keep trying for a decent pastrami sandwich in portland. No go. The rye was good, the pastrami fair and there was so much mustard on the sandwich it totally overwhelmed everything. I may go back and give it another try. A different choice as there are many suggestions or build your own. Just ok for me.

My partner had the idea to come here because it was a new place that we had never tried before. We walked in and he noticed that the meats in the deli case were boars head which is a particular Fred Meyer/Kroger brand. Lo and behold, the sandwich he ordered was basically a Fred Meyer deli sandwich that he could've made at home for probably less money. He was rather disappointed, although he said "it's good for what it is." And as for my salad, the vegetables on it: cucumber, tomato, all that jazz were nice and cold but the lettuce was warm in particular, and they barely gave me any ranch. But the bacon on the salad was pretty tasty. If I wanted a Fred Meyer deli experience, I would go to Fred Meyer. Also there was no ice because they "had no room." What kind of place doesn't have ice? Despite all that, the price was pretty decent. That's pretty much the best thing I can say. Oh and the music was kind of crappy too. Nothing but Beyoncé and Rihanna. Meh.

YESYESYESYESYES! This place is seriously one of the first places I eat upon a return from vacation. I love their bread & the meatball sub is probably my favorite right now. Staff is spotty as far as being nice, but the sammies are just too damn good for it to matter.

My husband and I were visiting Portland from San Diego, and we were staying near Hawthorne. We decided to just walk around one night and see what was nearby as far as food goes, and we happened to stumble upon this gem. My husband is vegan and I am vegetarian, so it can be difficult to find sandwiches that aren't just salad on bread. That being said, this place was a god-send. They have an entire separate vegetarian/vegan menu, with tons of great options. My husband ordered the Absolutely Vegan, which he absolutely loved. For myself I ordered the Field Dip, which is basically a French Dip. Field roast, swiss cheese, mushrooms, au jus, what more could you ask for? I devoured this sandwich and could have eaten another one immediately. We actually went back the next night and ordered the exact same things! The service was great, the price was right, the food was incredible, and the location is excellent. Overall this place is amazing and we can't wait to come back next time we visit Portland!

$6.50 for a 6". Vegan and vegetarian friendly!! Came here for lunch on a Saturday around 1. Not too busy actually considering it was around lunch time. We grabbed a card (they have four options: salads, veggie, meat or kids). We chose the veggie/vegan one, filled it out with the markers provided and then put them on the counter in front of the food prep-ers. After that we just waited for our names to be called, paid and sat to eat our delicious sandwiches. I ordered the VegiCajun and my bf ordered the Freuben (veggie reuben). Both were soooo good! Both of our sandwiches were on Dave's Killer bread, good choice, and we ate our yummy sandwiches feverishly - we just finished a long-ish bike ride and hadn't eaten yet. The cashier and all were super nice, the place was decently clean and there are plenty of options for food. Yummm! Can't wait to go back.

What's left to say about this place? The sandwiches are amazing: huge, fresh, delicious and enough for two meals (sometimes three!). My question is: how are these guys POSSIBLY making money at these prices? The best deal in town, hands down.

The only sandwich that has ever made me wonder if I can get my stomach enlarged. Seriously, the sandwiches here are not only enormous but incredibly delicious. If I had to ritualistically murder a litter of puppies with a wiffle bat to get a sandwich here, I would do it without batting an eye. Because although the puppy murdering would leave a vast inescapable hole in my soul, that hole would be immediately filled in with the delights of the greatest sandwiches ever made. Then I'd go home and sleep like a baby, dreaming of where I can get more puppies to bludgeon in exchange for sandwiches. Now, does anyone need a dog sitter?

  • Daniel H.

Man these guys kill it. I'm normally not much of a deli sandwich person but East Side makes them more delicious than any I've ever had before. Their prices may seem a bit daunting at first, but a 6-inch sub is more than enough for a full meal, and a footlong can probably feed a couple people easily. You can choose one of their pre-made combos or make your own with whatever ingredients you want on their menu, and they pile on the goods. Their buffalo chicken is insanely good and paired up with their asiago cheese bread it works so well. They've got a full vegan/vegetarian menu for the veggie crowd - they use a delicious Field Roast fake meat - as well and don't jack up the prices for it either which is also great. Plus if you don't want a sub they'll make you a giant Dave's Killer Bread sandwich, which is the best bread you can get so it's totally worth it either way. I give up making deli sandwiches at home. These guys do things with basic ingredients that I can't even hope of accomplishing.

What in tarnation, did I jinx myself giving ESD five stars in a recent review? I came here on 3/25/13 eagerly looking forward to a chicken salad sandwich, which I have ordered many times in the past. But on this day, I was to discover that they had swapped out the mayo in the chicken salad for a runny much too sweet dressing. The sandwich filling was brownish-yellow. Also, the bread crust was tough (one bite sent sandwich contents flying from here to Salem). But damn, that treacly filling - because of it - I just couldn't finish the thing. Considering the possibility that the chicken salad sandwich on this particular date was just an unfortunate aberration - an experiment gone bad - I will only drop ESD to three stars. I hold out hope that ESD will switch back (or has already switched back) to the old sandwich format. Update on 3/31/13 - I just received a very nice note from the owner. He explained that there was not an intent to change the chicken salad recipe, and that what I'd experienced was the result of a training miscue. The owner assures me that in the future they will be checking the work of new hires more closely. Also, the owner tells me that the original chicken salad recipe, which they've been using for five years, is back. Thank you!!

While I'm not vegan, this is one of the few places that i can bring my vegan or vegetarian friends and we both leave very happy. The sandwiches here are just plain good. The dry-erase marker method speeds on the process, and allows you to really think through your sandwich or hot dog. The variety is great, and the menu of East-Side designed sandwiches is delicious.

Awesome, no-frills sandwich shop in southeast portland. We tried the reuben and the spicy italian. Both were sooo delicious and a great price. The reuben had a great flavor and included some peppers on it which you don't normally see on a reuben - it was a great addition. The spicy italian was flavorful and piled high with veggies and meat. Highly recommend this sandwich shop. Love that they use boar's head meats... yummmmmmm.

When buying from the next door liquor store, you think, hey maybe we should eat before hammering down this 1.75 of Kraken you guys! And you could not be luckier than to have wandered into this perfect little Deli. I friggin' love this place. Big, sink-your-teeth-into sammies. Perfect to take home so you can gorge with abandon. Also i've noticed they always have good music playing and the employees seem like they like being there. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. This is definitely where my favorite sandwich lives.

Better than Subway--enough said? If you lift weights and are coming here post-squat day, the footlong may be necessary. At all other times, reconsider and reassess hunger level. I hadn't eaten for seven hours before devouring a 6-inch sandwich packed with nearly every veggie, two kinds of meat, cheese and multiple condiments. Right up until the last three bites, I thought that it really wasn't enough; that the gutbomb reputation is undeserved. Then my body processed the hormones that knew how distended my stomach was, and I took back the thought. So save the 12-inch for serious hunger, sharing, or if you can only have one meal divided throughout the day. Bottom line: the sandwiches are tasty, fresh, and leave you with a wholesome feeling of "uuuggghhh my intestines!" without feeling greased out. That's the best kind of overeating. The sandwiches could be made better with beer in-store, but that's just my opinion. I've taken 6-inchers home to pair with a beer and it's plenty filling. The one unfortunate fact is that they only toast the meat/cheese/bread, and some veggies (not all, but most!) would taste better toasted. Only a minor setback, though. To date I haven't been able to discern the difference between the buffalo chicken and oven roasted(?) chicken, but whatever, same price. Oh, and unless you have a 6-inch and will finish it eat immediately, avoid getting tomato. It'll soak your sandwich right through, but that'll happen anywhere. The vegetables (save for the pickled kind) are all raw, which is a bit strange for mushrooms. Good food overall. Get the cajun mayonnaise!

Ok, so once in about a million years, I am wrong about something. This would be one of those times. I have been back to East Side enough to qualify as a Yelp regular. Their meat heavy sandwiches on gloriously bad for you white sub rolls are my second biggest crush (after Nathan Adrian, because OMG have you seen that guy?). I always seem to get their Italian sub or another multi-meat special whose name escapes me. Aside from being a tad salty, they are so, so good. I recently branched out and tried the Fra-a-nch dip.* Pair that with some mac salad, a bottle of bubbles and college football and you've got the perfect Saturday, dudes. The prices are extremely reasonable - a 12" sub could easily feed three. Mexican Coke and other non-HFCS sodas are plentiful. I haven't tried the vegan offerings, but you could slap some veggies on Dave's Killer Bread and not be gluttonous like yours truly. The service is always super friendly and they still seem to have raided my iPod for their music choices. Pro tip: Order your sandwich, stroll over to Hawthorne Liquor (same parking lot), pick up some booze. Boom. Two birds, one stone. *I just now got the "Better off Dead" reference. See? They're THAT cool.

This was the first place I ever decided to eat in Portland. I was driving through and have heard so much about how good the vegan/vegetarian selections are around there so this was my first pick. I got 2 six inches. One for right away and one for later. I ordered a "Vegan BBQ" which was absolutely amazing. The second one I built my own with Wheat roll, field roast, lettuce, tomato, provolone, onion, jalapeno, and pickle. I must say the vegan BBQ was much better. I would totally go back again next time I'm around that area.

Great sandwiches. AMAZING size, great ingredients, LOTS and LOTS of variety. however, the people behind the counter never look like they want to be there. I always feel like I'm somehow ruining their day. However it does NOT show in the food. it's also pennies compared to how huge the sandwiches are. I usually get a variant of the italian sandwich, which is a messy, pickled, perfect meat sandwich. Also, their veggie menu is KILLER.

Well, I used to absolutely LOVE this place. Food was delicious, people were friendly...now they continuously get orders wrong. It was good, now it's just frustrating. Every sandwich I've had on the menu (I've tried most of them) has been fantastic. We are semi-regulars. The 12" is usually a ridiculous amount of food and I'll save half for the next day. If it is busy they still usually get 'em out pretty quick. One negative. There is very little seating in the store. We gave up trying to eat there and now just pick up and take it home.

Love this place. Love this Hawthorn neighborhood. A great sandwich to be had every time I've been there. Mesquite turkey and cheddar has such a great taste, you need to savor it. If your into siZe this is the place to be. I had a great soup of the day last Wednesday, Barley and kale yummy. I love the behind the counter help even if they sing off key. When your making a masterpiece you get a pass. Great place to eat. Go there NOW! You'll be happy you did.

This is my first yelp at this establishment. However I've been here a lot of times. This place kicks ass and I always recommend it to friends. You would be a fool to pass this joint up if your looking for a sandwich.

Amazing! So lucky to have stumbled in here this afternoon. I ordered the 12 inch spicy Italian special, and my god was it delicious. A little pricy (11.50) but an enormous sandwich that is good for 2 meals. So worth it. Make a trip here, you won't regret it

Two Haiku Review Tucked out of the way, tiny delicatessen you are sandwich gods. Huge, gigantic subs Deliciously fresh toppings totes recommended. YAY SAMMIE (pro): Delicious, HUGE subs (srsly, I could only finish most of a 6") SLAMWICH (con): a little pricey, but the subs are nearly 6" across and HUGE; not much interior seating means mostly takeout only

I'm jumping on the last review of this place. Holy crap that is a big f'n sandwich!!! Unless your mouth is twice the size of mine, there is no way you are getting it around this sandwich. I had the 6 inch ($5.50) East Side Italian. Here is the skinny on that bad boy. Take a deep breath and take it all in. Black forest ham, mesquite turkey, genoa salami with provolone, toasted, and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, pepperoncini, olives, mayo, deli mustard, balsamic vinaigrette, olive oil, italian seasons, salt & pepper on your choice of white, wheat or asiago sub roll. Now that is a mouthful in more than a few ways. I can't imagine tackling one of these in the 12 inch model. I think you might be able to feed a few small countries on one of those. Good bang for your buck here.

I love being able to dish out a 5 star rating. Why? Because this means I just had myself some damn good food. On this trip, the poison we picked was East Side Delicatessen! And this poison was AMAZING!! I built my own sub on my first visit. My wife had a East Side Italian. Great tasting sandwich as well! I did a Turkey breast, Roast beef, Cheddar, Cajun Mayo, Deli Mustard, lettuce, cucumber, mushrooms, dill chips, carrot slices, onions, tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette, pepper, Italian seasoning, all nestled into a HUGE chunk of Dave's Killer Bread. I don't know who Dave is, but his bread is killer. What impressed me about it, was how I never had 1 soggy bite. Each bite was uniform and solid. I bought a 12" (2 HUGE sandwiches) and took the other massive serving home for dinner. Even that night the sandwich was perfect. We got to ESD about 11:30am, people started pouring in right around 11:45. It was a clean place, the help was some younger kids that were really cool and helpful. They had some good music blasting while we were eating. Great deli, Great Subs, Great Service, Great Price. One of my favorite sandwich places period.

East Side Deli is my most favorite sandwich shop in Portland. I am not saying there aren't other places that serve a signature sandwich that isn't amazing. What I am saying is that overall, East Side's signature sandwiches are very good and hearty. I am saying that they use quality ingredients like Dave's Killer Bread, Boar's Head quality cold cuts & Field Roast as a meat alternative. I am saying that the sandwiches are stacked. They have a vegetarian menu & a hot dog menu too. I am saying their condiments & toppings selections are second to none. But most importantly, for someone like myself, the build-your-own sandwich options are the best I have ever seen at a sandwich shop. Done. Nuff said

Love, love, love their sandwiches -- HUGE, a terrific value. I can't finish a 6-inch sandwich, it's good for another meal at home. They load it up with many slices of Field Roast, as many as a package of it at the store. We went there after church yesterday and although the place was slammin' busy, the wait wasn't long; the staff is friendly and the music is great! This will be my go-to for when I'm REALLY hungry. Go there, you'll be glad you did! :D

Wellll...I tried the East Side Deli for a second time yesterday. The first time I wasn't super excited about it, but I thought that might be because I got the vegan meat product and did NOT like it. So I tried it again. I ordered a turkey sandwich with lots of veggies, olive oil and vinegar. I feel like the sandwich was kind of slapped together and it all came spilling out everywhere which just frustrated me. Also, I don't like the sundried tomatoes they use - they are kind of sweet tasting and just..off. All in all, just not my favorite place, even though I love sandwiches. Also, I kind of felt like the guy making the sandwiches was very unhappy to be there. He came and dropped off my sandwich with a big plop and walked away. Maybe that's why it was all sloppy.

How could I have been in Portland this long and not have been here? The cafe is quaint and friendly! The staff people are funny and not too "hip" to make conversation - if you know what I mean. My sandwich was delicious and huge! and only $6.

Good sammies. No wait. Reasonable prices. Could do without the cursing in their advertising, it's kinda tacky.

Love this place! Sandwiches are large and delicious. I also enjoy not hearing everyone ordering, very calm & organized. My one complaint was sticky tables & dirty walls, but that won't stop me from visiting again.

This is the best damn sandwich I've had in Portland, hands down. Plenty of Veggie/Vegan options. Friendly, helpful staff. Not much more to say: East Side Deli is just fantastic.

  • Karey R.

This deli gets major props for a completely separate vegetarian & vegan menu. Very cool. I've tried 3 of the veggie items: the Cajun, the French Dip, and the Freuben. They are all FANTASTIC. How it works is you walk in and on your left as you enter is a small counter that has laminated menus. You can choose meat, veggie, hot dog, or kids. You take a marker and check what sandwich you want, what bread, toasted or not, add avocado, etc. Or on the reverse side you can construct your own creation. You walk your order over to the prep area and in just a few minutes you'll be in noshing heaven. There are 8 or 10 veggie sandwiches. Six-inch is $6 and 12-inch is $10 I think? Now - trust me - I have a big appetite. I can't be bothered with "light" lunches. By mid-day, I'm hungry! So trust me when I tell you the 6-inch is thoroughly satisfying. It's HUGE. They also offer macaroni or delicious potato salad for $2, brownies for $2, or (I highly recommend!) cheesecake wedges for $3. There's also bottled natural sodas & teas, etc. The only reason I can't give 5 stars, at least not yet, is the atmosphere. It's kind of a dive. I recommend ordering to-go and finding somewhere nicer to eat, although there are several picnic tables outside that may be decent. I'm always rushing back to the office so haven't been able to test them. The deli shares a parking lot with a liquor store. If you're driving west on Hawthorne, look for the "DELI" sign on the left as you approach. I love that this place is only a couple miles from my work. I look forward to trying all the items on the veggie menu!

As someone who loves good food and has been on both sides of the counter, maybe I should have known what I was getting into. You hear the terms like "hip" and "laid-back" when describing the atmosphere and workers and I can definitely see how they got that label. I understand as a young adult working long hours does suck. Get over it. If you are open til 11 o'clock, then you serve til 11' o clock. The lack of hospitality is expected(we all have enough friends right?); The lack of a full menu? Bummer, yet completely understandable. It was about 20 minutes until 11 so I understand starting the clean-up process to get the ball rolling on getting out there. But I'm sure you are paid by the hours that your time card shows at the end of your pay period. So at least have the respect for the person paying you to promote their business by doing YOUR job until you do clock off. I ordered the roast beef and Swiss. Honestly the sandwich wouldn't have been that UNNERVING as long as it would have been dressed properly. No horseradish. No lettuce. No tomato. No onion. Thats about half the ingredients missing. I wasn't even a member of Yelp(longtime user, just never felt the need to write a review) but that's how much of a "bad taste" I felt lingering in the aftermath. The sandwich wasn't "bad" nor "inedible" but for the premium price(11.50 for the 12'er)is it too much to ask to at least put all the toppings on it? My parents always said "You reap what you sow"; but is expecting a properly dressed sandwich really THAT much to ask for?

I wasn't going to write a review for East Side Deli because I didn't have much to say that hasn't already been said... but then I read someone's review where they actually wrote the words something akin to "you can get a better sandwich at Subway." Well, Subway guy, you're wrong. Like, just flat out, objectively, in the court of sandwich law, wrong. But it's okay that you're wrong, because we live in America after all. You can be wrong in all your glory. Go stuff your face with a five-dollar-foot-long and leave the big tasty sandwich to the rest of us eat not merely seeking sustenance.

My daughter and I LOVE the East Side Deli. The fact that they have sliced vegetarian Field Roast and bottles of good ol' Mexican Coke was enough to make me like this place initially, but the friendly staff and huge sandwiches keep me coming back for more. They're a great addition to the 'hood.

For years, I've somehow managed to overlook this place. I went in on a whim the other day, and I'm already planning my return trip. Great, fresh vegan and vegetarian sandwiches (and apparently tons of stuff for carnivores, too.) The field roast rueben was just perfect. Plus, they have a whole big salad menu, which I can't wait to try. And soon. Great service, clean, fast. And delicious.

  • Nathan S.

With artsy walls, big smiles from the sandwich artists, and dry erase mini order menus to craft your own masterpiece - this place is the bees knees. For 6 bucks you can fill yourself up 100% and even have avocado on your sandwich. I thoroughly enjoy Boar's Head meat and sauces which East Side Deli has on lock. Where else can you support local Dave's Killer Bread with loads of fresh veggies and even obscure additions such as sundried tomatoes or the vegan harvest roast to remedy missing meat or cheese? My only qualm is that one must get 15 stamps to get a 6" free. That's a wee bit stingy and I believe it could change with all this place's popularity (see 75 reviews with a near five star average here on Yelp).

    (5)
  • Jeffrey Y.

The most valid complaint you will get about the sandwiches from East Side Delicatessen is that they are a little stingy on meat (or fake meat in my case) and cheese. There isn't even an option for more which kind of sucks, I would pay a little more for a little extra generosity. But the service is pretty quick, the non-meat and non-cheese servings are generous, and the place is really clean. You can have your sandwich hot or cold, build your own or choose a standard one from the menu. If you live in Portland chances are you know Dave's Killer Bread and it is excellent. The rolls they use are good but I want less bread and more of everything else so no rolls for me. ***Update*** I got a nice message from Cory, the owner, offering more field roast. He explained that they use less because some people actually complained that there was too much (it's kind of a dense "meat" so that makes sense) but he said that they will add more upon request. Sweet!

One of the best sandwich places in portland. The girls are friendly and the sandwiches are huge. Great quality ingredients too!

This place just opened up downtown and I've been there twice already! The vegan/veggie sandwiches are so good, it's ridiculous! You get a lot of food for what you pay, it's such a good deal. I recommend it to anyone for sure!

  • Erin M.

Caveat: I was vegetarian when I ate here. This may not be the world's classiest deli, but I really enjoy it. First of all, they've got field roast, which is a godsend for vegetarians who just want a protein-rich sammich. The bread is good, the toppings are nearly endless, and the combo is a really good deal. Hardly any seating, but if you want a yummy veggie sandwich this place is cheap and awesome, and the people are friendly.

Whenever I pass an East Side Delicatessen, I have to stop in and force myself to eat, even when i'm not hungry. Their artfully put together sandwiches and hot dogs are extremely overlooked when it comes to sandwich shops in portland. East Side has classic and quality ingredients. You can even get your sandwich on Dave's Killer Bread! (hell yeah!) They have very fair prices, super awesome staff, and I promise your stomach will leave very happy.

I don't even remember leaving. They have, three consecutive times, made me the best sandwich in the world, and I've only been here three times. The staff is nice, and the music is cool!

This is as good as it gets for sandwiches in Portland. Great bread, great meat, fresh veggies, quality spreads and plenty of all of them -- all at a very affordable price. We had been looking for a destination sandwich joint here and we are pleased to say that we are no longer looking, because Portland's is on 46th and Hawthorne.

We're all familiar with the $5 footlong. It's a substantial amount of food, but its not really good food. After eating one too many of these Subway sandwiches, taking a bite into my sandwich from East Side brought tears to my eyes. "This is a real sandwich!" I exclaimed while chowing down my customized turkey sammich at Mt. Tabor Park which is right down the street, making for a perfect lazy Sunday. The portions are generous; in reality I probably should have shared my 6" sandwich, but it was so good I couldn't stop. They use fresh, quality ingredients such as Boars Head and none of that crappy iceberg lettuce I've had to deal with. Also, the gals working there were listening the Clash, had a good attitude, and kept the place clean considering how busy they were. It was my fault for the wait. Being indecisive as I am, I took forever to order and as luck would have it, some guy knew exactly what he wanted and ordered like 4 sandwiches for his entire family before I could turn my sandwich order in, so yes, it took awhile. I can't wait to go back and try one of their recommended sandwiches or maybe even the Field Roast (being an ex-vegetarian, this piqued my interest). I wish North Portland had a place like this because the people at East Side truly are "Sandwich Artists."

    (5)
  • Willy B.

This is my favorite sandwich spot in the Portland area. The people are pretty friendly every time I go in there. East Side uses Boars Head Meats. Which is some of the best deli meat around. I think it's better then most meat market deli meats. The ability to create your own 'Big Fucking Sandwich" is pretty awesome. And all of there specialty sandwich great! Also these people do not hold back on giving you the meat. They lay the meat on thick and hardy;) There veggies are on point as well, very fresh... So if you are in the area of SE Hawthorne and are craving a killer sandwich stop in to East Side Deli. You will not be disappointed.

Had the MOST AWESOME Italian hogie sandwich here the other day. Nice, big, juicy. Beats Subway hands down. A second visit, I tried the Roast Beef special. Very good, but I think the Italian is better. Will definitely be back. Suggestions for improvements: have a few more "side salads" and other kinds of chips available for purchase; and bring in some garbanzos for salads.

Portland has grown into a sandwich town. Around every corner there seems to spring a new sandwich shop featuring different combinations of inerds than the next guy. I've read loads of reviews about East Side Delicatessen and finally decided to taste what this acclaimed place had to say for itself. I really wanted to like this place. The sandwich was good, but like Linnea M. said, "nothing spectacular" ( yelp.com/biz/east-side-d… ). I can see it being a great spot for those who live and work in the area. Sadly, I can't see myself making another trip out to East Side Delicatessen.

  • christopher s.

I love this place! If you go here, I would suggest you stick with the Build-your-own. That's how you get the bang for your buck. There's no limit to how many sides and condiments you can order. So, if you make it like me, you end up with a super FAT sandwich that leaves you with a side salad of excess guts when you finish. Even with the price raise to 5.50, you are NOT going to be able to find a sandwich that fresh, that fat, and that delicious for that price in most Southeast establishments. Skip subway, this 5 dollar sandwich isn't a foot long, but it makes up for it with fatness.

Seriously? I mean they aren't terrible, but they taste like cafeteria sandwiches...you can get a better sub at Safeway for god sakes. If you want a good sanwich there are some great options once you stray from hawthorne.

So I had originally wanted to try and review the Parkside deli on Belmont but it's out of business, so this was the closest deli to where I was. It sits in a very small shopping center off of Hawthorne, and isn't extremely well marked when approaching from the West; I had to turn around to park. The deli itself is very small, with a few counter spaces and some wooden picnic tables on the sidewalk and other than the sandwiches it sells and some displayed cut meats, it isn't a deli in the classic sense. But who cares. I ordered a 12" sub, as is usually that's enough to fill me for a whole day without making me feel like I was going to explode. Here, not so much. The monstrosity they handed me transcended the boundaries of what I think a sandwich should expect of itself. Just looking at the damn thing you could almost hear it taunting lesser sandwiches and making them want to go out and buy expensive sandwich sports cars. Seriously, it was gigantic. Never one to back down from a food challenge, I started eating. The first thing I noticed is that the jalapeños were hot. "But Al," you whine, "jalapeños are supposed to be hot!" Well yes, but usually they're not. Normally what you get is something delivered en masse by Sysco that is rather bland, over pickled, and only has the heat for a few seconds if that. Not these. I'm still tasting the heat writing this 40 min later. That's a good jalapeño. The sandwich itself was delicious, fresh ingredients, and the covered picnic tables were a nice place to beat the heat of the day. Also I ate the whole thing, but I seriously wish I hadn't. I am now going to go take the siesta the sandwich demands of me. All on $10 including drink. Oh yes, I'll be back there.

Been to the East Side Delicatessen several times now, and this place rocks. For 5.50 you get a 6 inch sub that is just as filling as a foot long at some generic sub chain, and the ingredients are much, much better. I just tried the Turkey and Cheddar today and it was the best turkey sandwich I've ever had. The veggies are large, and the deli mustard on it was delicious. They have good quality meats as well. I've also had the Italian, and it was great as well. Every sandwich I've had their has been huge with all the veggies and meat they stuff in there! This place never disappoints.

I love supporting locally owned and operated places. I've been hearing how awesome their sammiches are and finally decided to go!!! I'm kind of obsessed with Reubens and I've trying to not eat so much meat lately. So I decided to try their Freuben!! (field roast vegan meat, dave's killer rye, 1000 island, swiss, and sauerkraut, toasted). It is probably one of my favorite roobs I've ever eaten. And the Field Roast vegan meat had a great flavor and great consistency. Perfect amount of everything. My boyfriend made his own sandwich on an Asiago roll, with the buffalo chicken and salami with veggies. I stole a couple of bites and it was delicious. There was 3 bad ass chikas working and they were very friendly. I wanna go back and try their meatball sammich and their desserts which looked super YUMZ (the pumpkin bread pudding)!!! Great quality food and good service for cheap. I dig.

I was tempted to write this review even before I had a bite of my sandwich. The customer service left me feeling bummed out and, had I not just taken a pretty good (not awesome) bite, I would have given East Side a very sorry one star review. I won't go into details but if there's any chance the owner reads these reviews, she or he may want to have a conversation with the staff about how crappy the economy is and how they're lucky to have jobs and stop complaining about how busy it is because customers are what keep a paycheck coming. Oh, and your welcome. I know you didn't say thank you at any point of my transaction but I'm sure you meant to. I guess you'll be one less customer busy from now on.

This was more than a one time thing. No love 'em and leave 'em for the ol' East Side Delicatessen! First date: Reubenesque (without the cheese). Oye Vey. This bad boy was loaded with pastrami, bathed in thousand island dressing and adorned with a delicate sprinkling of pepperoncini atop the sauerkraut. This delectable morsel is nestled between two slices of Dave's Killer Rockin' Rye bread. Damn it was soooo good. Second date: Having been wooed on the first date by that sassy sandwich I felt it was time to step it up, be daring, grab life by the ol' satchel and feast on a beast. This second round found me staring down an East Side Italian. They say that they fit these things into the soft 'like a pillow' white roll: Black forest ham, mesquite turkey, genoa salami with provolone, toasted, and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, pepperocini, olives, mayo, deli mustard, balsamic vinaigarette, olive oil, italian seasons, salt & pepper... Mine didn't include provolone (my choice). I managed to devour this monster sandwich and am riding a most euphoric state of food coma. The East Side Deli is certainly one of the best sandwich joints out there. They do what they do so very well and show you that you do not have to have fancy in-house smoked thick cut local bacon, caramelized shallots, in-house made pickles, truffle infused oil, or spit roasted Gorgonzola sauce to be a 'hip' or 'cool' sandwich joint. Thank you East Side for showing me the way to big fat f*ckin' sandwiches on the cheap. Burp.

Wow! This place is awesome. Some of my co-workers got sandwiches here last week and asked me if I wanted one. I said no as I usually don't eat lunch. When they returned with their sandwiches I couldn't believe how huge they were. So, today my stomach started growling and said, " Hey maybe lunch?" I ordered an Italian on asiago bread. It was delicious! Lots of yummy ingredients. I will definitely be going back here.

So glad we tried this place. I love delis that have a fillable form for your sandwich order. Makes getting the sandwich you want so much easier. Though I wanted the Reubenesque exactly as they offer it- corned beef, thousand island, sauerkraut and pepperoncini on yummy toasted rye. I can barely finish the 6" size. For $5.50, you can't beat it. Last time, I asked for a side of au jus to go with it and they threw it in for free. Their potato salad is the bomb as well. The side for $2.50 is probably too much for one person. I saved my leftovers for later.

This place is a nieghborhood favorite. The trifecta is achieved here: large portions, quality ingredients, and fair price. There's two ways to go - fully customized or a menu specialty. Off the menu I've had the reuben and the Portland cheesesteak, my favorite being the cheesesteak. You can go pretty crazy on the make-your-own with all the choices you have to pick from. I'm tempted to say this is the best sandwich place in Portland but I will stop just short of that - perhaps I'm just in my honeymoon phase after trying it out just a few weeks ago.
