Daily Cafe by the Tram - what to try when you're on a budget: 1. Breakfast panini (oh, the bacon is sooo good) 2. Baguette with jam (baguette comes toasted and they give you the BEST marionberry jam, I believe) 3. Lemon curd scone (so buttery and soft - not a hard/scone texture so if you're looking for something "sconey" this isn't it) 4. Brownie with raspberry (so rich and chocolately, what's there not to love?) The Coffee Bar in the foyer of CHH (an extension of the Daily Cafe) has a bit less options in terms of their baked goods. Always check out both places (the Bar and the Cafe) because they may have different selection. When I'm at OHSU I only get my white chocolate mochas at the coffee bar by the tram (made with Stumptown coffee). There is a gentlemen who makes the cup so creamy and fluffy to perfection. The texture is very different from any other mochas I've had. Since I'm not a hardcore coffee drinker (cream over coffee) I've had my fair share of white chocolate mochas in my lifetime - this one I tell ya, is different and hits the spot. :)

Ok I was a bit wrong. I have been back a few times now and they do have a combo menu at lunch. The service model and price is maybe just slightly above that of a Panara bread. Just get your order in a to go box because seating is very limited and there is a park 1/2 block a way with outdoor seating. Eat there without bumping your elbows into someone else's. I think they might just be the only deli at the OHSU campus that takes AMX. I might just miss this place a little once my rotation is over.

Really great sandwiches and baked snacks. Needed a quick bite and was very surprised at how high the quality of the meal was. Great stop to sit and eat or to take on the run.

Overpriced okay food for people who are too lazy to get outside of the building.

I love the staff here. So nice. Great food in a clean little café right near the tram. Yummy pastries in the morning, often still warm from the oven. Best cookies! Dawna, Sasha, Paulina, Mark (the barista in the lobby) , and Matt (manager) are all very helpful and they take pride in their café. I love their sandwiches, but they have awesome freshly made daily specials, too. Highly recommended!

Excellent food and lattes. I just wish they were open on the weekends for neighbors who live here!

I rarely write a review based on one single item from an establishment's menu let alone a five star review but today I must. I give the Daily Cafe at the Tram five stars for their Double Lemon Muffin! Seriously, you won't believe your taste buds! This melt in your mouth lemony taste treat will have you begging for more. AMAZEBALLS!

Great staff and good food. Wish they had a gluten free option for sandwiches but other than that it's great. My favorite is the yogurt parfait, as well as the veggie sandwich ( when I could still eat wheat ).

I was on crutches coming to this Café after seeing the doctor. I asked the woman working behind the coffee shop if she could walk this over and she looked at me funny if I had asked her something new. Perhaps I did. I looked over at the cookie case and saw fruit flies flying all over in the case. However, the worst part was coming to put my stuff away and walking out on crutches when I see a gentleman smashing the bugs inside the case on the windows. I just about lost my lunch. I won't be coming back.

Visiting from Thailand....Chicken Panini is the best thing I've ever had in Portland. Very high quality and fresh. Good environment and a place to relax.

I've spent much more time here recently than I'd like. There are more positives than negatives in my experience. If I had to compare it to hospital food from fifteen years ago, there's no question it's a giant leap forward. Fresh salads, huge drink selection from sodas to Kombucha - loads of coffee drinks, salad options to go or to made to order. Soups, paninis, pastries and yummy cookies. It's usually crowded but I'm sure there's different times of day it's quiet I just haven't been lucky enough to find that. There's a few more private tables and in the summer you can sit outside and of course there's many spots along the waterfront to take your lunch. It's light and bright and the music is refreshingly different than what you'd expect from a hospital cafe. Reading other reviews I've noticed some comments about grumpy attitude from some servers. I've noticed it too, but if I had to work around certain doctors all day, had to serve people who's lives have just been changed forever for the better or worse, as in quite often the bottom has just dropped out, it would have an affect on me as a server as well. High stress environment, certainly. Simultaneously, I'm certain the servers could make more of an effort to look the customer in the eye and remember this cafe's surroundings are much different than say, a Salt and Straw after a soccer game. It's a two way street. I'll keep going there, I'll keep tipping well, and most of all I'll be glad that I get to leave because being in the hospital sucks.

I have been to the Daily Cafe many times. There are very limited options in the South Waterfront. And if you have to spend time at OHSU, your time may be limited. Enter the Daily Cafe. Always busy. Hard to get a seat sometimes. But so worth it. They have a couple of fresh soups every day and they are a great choice. I love the half sandwich with either soup or salad. And they don't give you just a teeny cup of soup, either. They give a generous bowl. Sandwiches are tasty. Service is fast and friendly.

Amazing food. Excellent chef and variety. The daily specials are amazing. I love waiting to see what will be served. The daily specials will span all cultural foods. While they are not traditionally authentic, they have s great taste unto themselves. Amazing salads!

I love their well-priced and delicious breakfast sandwiches. Yesterday I had a daily special - spinach and beet salad - OMG, it was dreamy and a good portion. Love this place.

Located conveniently inside the beautiful OHSU Center for Health & Healing just outside the lower station of the Aerial Tram, this is a great place to catch a quick bite. They have a number of standard and more unique sandwiches to choose from. I had a smoked turkey sandwich on foccacia bread with an avocado and chipotle spread...I'd recommend that one. The potato salad that comes on the side is really good as well. The Daily Cafe gets bonus points from me for serving Mighty Leaf teas! Seriously the best tea brand ever. Ever.

If it were not for the location next to the OHSU tram this place would be a distant memory of another failed coffee shop cafe. The food is at best mediocre and the layout is all out of whack. When you walk in the majority of the entrance is unused and baron with no real direction of how or where to order. The staff seems lost and uninterested. I'm not sure... are they trying to be a hip coffee shop/cafe, a convenience store or a sterilized cafeteria with long communal tables and bad food?

I go here several times a week. The Breakfast Panini is tasty and one of the best priced of all the items on the menu. Staff are great in remembering your "usual" order(s). This is a quick serve venue, they have grab and go sandwiches and salads, along with hot food grill. Good: Breakfast Paninni, Chocolate walnut scone, raspberry scone, Cupcakes, Gluten-free baklava muffin (tasty!!) Daily Burger, any of the panini's, and made to order salads.

Pretty simple, limited menu, but the quality is generally good.

What happened to this place? I live in the South Waterfront and used to go here often. The burger was actually pretty good - it wasn't a Castagna burger, but it was definitely more of the gourmet variety. Well, I hadn't been back in a year and I ordered the burger. It was almost not editable. I ended up throwing it away. The only reason I can imagine this place stays in business is the location.

Consistently great food. Love their Paninis. Airy place with big windows. Lots of ready made sandwiches and drinks available. Have yummy daily specials. I recommend the brie and pear and watercress panini. comes with a nice little lump of dill potato salad. great place and very convenient!

I've been to the Daily Cafe a few times, but only out of necessity when I accompany my dad to his oncology/chemo appointments in the same building. The staff has always been somewhat snooty, indifferent and inflexible but this last visit was a deal-breaker. My mom and I went down to the cafe to fetch my dad something to eat before his chemo treatment. Nothing sounded good to him, as the chemo and the anxiety surrounding it are kind of an appetite-killer. A grilled cheese sandwich was the only thing that sounded appealing to him. Of course, the Daily Cafe didn't have that on their menu, but being such a simple item, I wasn't worried about their ability to accommodate the request. It is the HOSPITALITY industry, after all, right? I belly up to the counter, where an apathetic and slightly annoyed -looking young man waited impatiently to take our order. I think I surprised him when, instead of simply stating my order and moving immediately to one side, Soup Nazi-style, I had the audacity and nerve to actually ask him a question. "Is there any way we could get a grilled cheese sandwich?" Without hesitation, Herr CounterBoy quickly and curtly denied my request, explaining that everything is pre-made at the cafe. We scanned the menu again, only to find rich, fancified, gastronomic over-kill....herbs and fruit compote and cream cheese condiments oh, my. Their menu made ME slightly nauseous, and I wasn't even the one getting chemo so I knew my dad would not be able to eat any of that. I figured I would try and appeal to Herr Pseudo-Server by explaining the situation. I told him my dad was upstairs getting chemo and the only thing he wants is a grilled cheese sandwich. The guy didn't even flinch, he just said, "No, we can't do that." "Can you take the ham off the grilled Muenster panini?" "No." "Can you scrape off the cream cheese on the ham sandwich?" "No." "Do you have bread, cheese, and knives at your establishment?" (is what I felt like asking.) I will NEVER patronize this place again. I somewhat understand the inability to accommodate special requests in a high-volume cafe such as this (although I still don't think it's smart business) but when you operate out of a medical office building, the least you could do is show some courtesy and compassion to the patients and the families that have to be there and are forced to eat your highly overpriced (especially for being pre-made) mediocre food simply because it's the only place to eat. this place is SOULLESS and HEARTLESS. PS. On a less important side note, I don't get how this place thinks that heaping copious amounts of random herbs on everything, whether it tastes good or not, is a good idea and then, on top of that, never salts anything!

Overpriced, but too damn convenient not to visit for a cup of coffee or a chai on the regular.

  • Shelley M.

The food is just OK. The pastries can be good. The location is fabulous, and the place is busy. So would it really kill the people who work here to drop the attitude? I've been here dozens of times (it's the location!) and I even tip, but I only recall being treated with common courtesy once. The rest of the time, they just can't wait for me to get my ass out of line and out of their way. Thankfully, more places are opening at South Waterfront.

If it wasn't for the fact that little more than the sight of blood made me ill, I quite possibly could have found myself at this point of my life enrolled in medical school. But complacent in the fact that I should just leave the scrubbing up to those who can stomach it, my bias as a young architect has surrounded creating new typologies of urban health care facilities. So when I need a break from the stacks of medical and physiology journals for my upcoming thesis (side note: kudos to you medical professionals out there who can easily write and understand this stuff) I like to head down to the new-ish OHSU building at the South Waterfront for a helpful reminder of what I've gotten myself into. Daily Cafe, located in the ground floor of this innovative center for health and healing offers a quaint little spot to grab a quick lunch or cup of coffee in the area. The Stumptown is piping hot and welcome on the blustery days of fall. It's a rather small place, but there are plenty of tables to read, people watch, and wait for the streetcar back to the inner city. While there is nothing super innovative, it's a welcome tenant in this up and coming neighborhood. The crew is friendly and quick, keeping the cases well stocked and coffee bar running like clockwork. It's a reminder that (like the medical industry) speedy compassion in restaurants is crucial to success. While watching researchers, medical professionals, patients and visitors snake through the cafe I sometimes wonder if bypassing a career of white coats and stethoscope for one of black sweaters and clunky glasses was a good idea. But then I realize one can't instill much confidence if they're always passing out. So I'll stick to the coffee and construction for now.

It's nice to pop over on the streetcar or tram for a little latte and bite to eat. The paninis come out nicely pressed, looking delicious -- but I suppose that's what panini presses do. Each time I've been here, the food is good but also a little underwhelming, especially for the price. If it were less expensive, I'd give it 3 stars.

Good food. Service is what-evs. They are busy. They aren't rude, just not extra friendly. Easy to pop in and out if you're in hurry to or from the hill.

I've always been a fan of the Daily Cafe -- their food is simple, fresh, excellent, the atmosphere laid back. The regular menu is excellent -- the tarragon chicken salad (also available as a sandwich) is quite good, and the chopped salad (with optional grilled chicken) is great for a quick meal. Their daily specials are reliably tasty -- from soups to pasta to salads, you can take a group of friends from out of town or from the office to the Daily, and everyone will find something they like. I work very close to the cafe at the tram, and occasionally take myself there for lunch. On top of the regular menu, this location offers a deli case with pre-made fresh sandwiches -- perfect if you have to grab and go. The only drawback is price -- the Daily is a bit on the steep side. Not a huge deal, especially since going out for lunch is an occasional thing for me.

This review is all about the service. Specifically, the lack of good service. This place has all of the hopeful trappings of a 3 or even 4 star cafe: Stumptown coffee, bagels from Kettleman's (best in PDX), and delicious breakfast and lunch inventions. However, at this point the only reason I patronize the place is that it's the only cafe anywhere near the OHSU tram that I take to work every morning. Why am I scared away, you ask? Because, generally speaking, I've found the staff to be pricks. That's right, pricks. I have been there a handful of time, and each experience makes me feel affronted and less of a person. Seriously! The first time was for a bagel...I just did not know that it didn't come with cream cheese, and the counter worker (and owner) sneers at me with a, "Um yeah, cream cheese is extra." I am typically a Type C, deferential person, but his scorn made me almost laugh! There was no "Thank you," when I received my bagel, nor even a glance. I was a simple minion made to hand over my money so that I could enjoy a bagel that they hadn't even made in-house. My repeat experiences have all been similar: snobby with a side of entitlement. What's WORSE, however, are the women that are staffed at the little espresso stand outside the Daily Cafe (which, I learned today, is also managed by the Daily - SURPRISE!). I got an OPEN EYE ROLL at my order for a Dirty Chai, and then one staff person said to another: "Look your favorite!" I didn't know if she sarcastically meant me or the drink, sheesh! After it was made, it was slammed emphatically down on a table, without a call-out. I had to ask, "Is this my dirty chai, and this *points to a mocha* that man's mocha?" As a response I got a blank stare and a barely noticeable nod, and the man to whom the mocha belonged thanked me for calling attention to it, "Or else I wouldn't have even known." Wipe your asses and get with the customer service, Daily people. Just because people are forced to patronize your cafe doesn't mean you can crap all over them.

The Daily reliably serves up delicious panini and salads. I'm really enamored with their Breakfast Panini. Their specials can be amazing, and can also be completely uninspired and lackluster. The same goes for the coffee - I literally try to time my purchases so only certain employees make my lattes - but sometimes I just don't have the time to wait or I need coffee now, so I walk out with something mediocre. It's nice to have a Daily Cafe near by, I just wish they were more consistent.

  • Anuj K.

The Daily Cafe is conveniently located for OHSU personnel and anybody visiting the hospital, however I don't think I'd make a special trip to try this place out. The daily cafe has solid coffee and tea drinks, and fresh food. I can't really think of another way to describe the food - it's just always really fresh. They have daily specials that are unique and worth getting, and I don't think I've ever gotten anything off the regular menu because I thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was.

Good tasting food & reasonably priced. Wish there was more room to sit but I understand it being a small place. Try the breakfast panini!

Hmm, is the Daily Cafe American (New)? I'm not sure what sub-category on here best describes it, but it's tasty! The Daily Cafe [at the Tram] is another outpost of the popular lunch spot of the same name [in the Pearl]. Situated at the bottom of the new OHSU March Wellness Center in the South Waterfront, the cafe offers nice panini, salads, and coffee drinks in a casual setting. The interior of the cafe has a West Elm vibe going on, which is not particularly innovative, but cute enough when we're talking about a cheap meal on the go. They also show local artists' work, including a somewhat erotic show of fruits and vegetables right now (check the pear painting on the west wall and tell me I'm imagining things)! Stuff is local (I watched the farm guy bring in the day's lettuce delivery in a huge plastic bag), sometimes organic, and best of all: Stumptown is here! I give them 4 out of 5 stars because I received surly service once and I do not appreciate surliness. Where to queue in line is also very confusing when there are lots of people there because a large support beam happens to be right in the middle of the 2 registers. I will keep going back 'cuz they in my hood and most of the time they are very friendly.

For a cafe in an office building, this place is good. Healthy options, interesting options, delicious options. The location is kind of...well...weird if you don't work there. Still, the vegetarian special was tasty. Oh, and a couple of those doctors were pretty attractive, too. Maybe I should go here more often. ha

Location, location, location. Well, if you happen to find yourself at the OHSU building or the tram, then this place has location all wrapped up. This is a bustling hot spot for people who work here at OHSU, and perhaps also for the folks who live in the South Waterfront lofts. It is sort of like a cafeteria off the set of a medical TV show, since lots of people wearing medical garb are hanging out. I was there at lunch hour and it was packed...very small dining room for this large a crowd of hungry people. There is a long counter in the middle, and lacking any other seating I asked the guy sitting there next to an empty seat if I could sit at the empty seat next to him. He said yes but kind of looked at me like I was hitting on him or something. Only as he got into a highly medical technical conversation with another guy did I realize he was a surgeon who worked there. (Probably not the sort of thing most people talk about while they are eating.) I had a Caesar salad off the shelf since I was in a hurry, and it was very good, in fact. The price was a bit steep for a plain old salad, though. The hot food on the menu sounded very appealing, but again the prices seemed a tad high. So yes, the food seems good and the location very convenient. I just found the place too busy/rushed/crowded and OHSU-employee-cafteria-like to give it more stars. I would not select this as a destination food place, but a good place to eat if you happen to be in the area.
