Another nice little house-made-restaurant in the Sellwood neighborhood. In an attempt to be creative in this review, I will now summarize the restaurant to the beat of the dance it is named after. (a sort of 1 -- 2 -- 3-4-5 beat) Food - Fine Cha! Cha! Cha! Drinks - Meh Cha! Cha! Cha! Service - Fast Cha! Cha! Cha! Price - Great Cha! Cha! Cha! Alright, now stop, put on some Spanish music and try reading it again. I'll wait.... Much more exciting that way, right? So yes, in the end Cha! Cha! Cha! was just alright. It's a place I'd drop in for lunch every now and again, but not somewhere I'm likely to suggest for dinner with friends.

Poor service. If the girls would have stopped talking to each other my order wouldn't have been messed up.

I'm not really even all that bummed out on the soggy plate of completely unremarkable Mexican food the waitress brought me. I mean, I enjoy plenty of somewhat shitty Mexican places in Portland: Pepino's, Ole Ole, and a few of those super sketchy burrito carts that are on every block. So it's actually okay if the food is sub-par. You know the drill. It's cheap and fast and filling, so who gives a shit? It's a goddamn recession, son. Well, the only time I actually give a shit is when the food is shitty, the service is bad, AND the waitstaff does gross stuff with my food. Let me give you some advice, poor bedraggled service-industry workers of the world: If a customer has a valid, reasonable complaint about their order, try not to fire back with "what do you want me to do about it?" Not only is it a laughably rude and entirely inappropriate response, it also instantly transforms your 20%-25% gratuity into a 0% gratuity. Not to mention that eventually some condescending jerk will either blog or yelp about your crappy performance on a public forum. So bear with me. My thinking is that you are (somehow) employed, which means that you must posses some sort of problem-solving skills. So if there IS, in fact, a problem, it's reasonable to conclude that you may be able to offer some suggestions on how to resolve the issue, correct? The fact that my food came smothered in sour cream despite the fact that I specifically ordered it without can't be some entirely foreign issue to you, right? I realize a little sour cream certainly isn't the end of the world, but I don't like it and definitely don't want it on my fucking quesadilla, which is why I ordered it that way. The obvious solution is to please just remake the item, if not with a smile or apology, then at least with the acknowledgment that shit got fucked up and you will be able to fix it. The way NOT to fix it is to bring the quesadilla into the kitchen, scrape off all the sour cream with a knife, and return it to the table looking slightly slimy, and like it may have just gotten run over by a car. Final grade: F (as in 'Fuck off'). PS. Is it really that hard to serve chips that aren't stale with some decent salsa? No? Ok. See you a Por Que No, suckers.

I come here about 3 nights a week with my roommate. I love cha cha cha. Its not where you wine and dine but I get two VERY good tacos for 4 bucks and the owner is so chill. It has super good chicken tacos and chimchangas too!

I ordered chicken taquitos with no sour cream or Cotija cheese. After ordering and paying, I was offered beef taquitos because they were out of chicken. They were alful. The beef was hard, and it was topped cheese. Out of the 5 meals, one person was satisfied.

We have been twice. First time, my chicken ticka (spelling??) burrito was less than impressive. It wasn't folded correctly so all the chix was at one end and beans et all at the other end. I like it even throughout. Picky - but eh, that's me. My BF thought it was OK and I cann't remember what he had. Last night was much better - I had the shrimp burrito - wrapped properly- and it had pinapple (nice sweet surprise- YUM!!) in it!! A friend really enjoyed her taco salad and my BF was much happier but once again, I can't remember what he had. Other note- I like my restaurants clean. I figure if it's not clean with what I can see sitting at the table what is it like in the kitchen where they are preparing my food???? Hence, the three stars. The window sills and between the chair back rungs- pinesol, hot water, a couple of rags and a little time people!!!!! The place isn't gross - as I would have walked out- it just needed a good "spring" cleaning in late summer. Hence, the three stars.

Dear Portland, I don't understand why it is so difficult for you to understand good taqueria. I know whereof I speak, having been born and raised in an area that looked more like little Mexico than California. Note the following: 1. Above all else, the food should not be bland. Yes, it should actually taste like something. 2. If you deem it appropriate to serve a salad along with your tacos the salad should at least be dressed. Please don't just toss in a few orange slices for me to squeeze over top and call it a day. (as an aside, these undressed spinach leaves were actually the highlight of the entire meal) 3. Your ceviche should include actual fish or shrimp. It's true! Also, it should not arrive in a bowl of cocktail sauce. 4. Your margaritas should taste of alcohol. 5. Taqueria is not health food. Repeat: TAQUERIA IS NOT HEALTH FOOD. Finally, GOOD LORD, why do people like this place? Are all you native Portlanders just sending us native Californians here out of spite? Is this a dupe? An inside joke? Because I AM SO ONTO YOU, Portland!

What can I say? It's CHA CHA CHA. A local semi-whitewashed mediocre Taqueria Chain. Not authentic, Not terrible, Not Great...just a slight step up from the likes of a Taco Del Mar or Chipotle. FOOD: Has your usual cast of burrito & tacos along with specials that will vary every now & then. (ie, burrito w/ chevre, etc.) They do cater to the non meat-eating crowd by offering things like tempeh on the menu. Meats are decent, nothing to write home about...nothing I'd really say is BAD on the menu except for maybe their rice. There have been times when it was downright "AWFUL"...as quoted by a friend. SERVICE: You walk up to the counter, order, then sit down. Never had an issue personally. CURVE: It's reasonably priced & there are a decent amount of locations. If you're looking for a quick burrito fix it solves that.

Decent but not exceptional mexican food for a good price. Our vegetarian burrito was tasty and a good portion, but was kind of bland. The burrito contained rice and fillings, but really required the addition of some fresh salsa and sour cream to be palatable. Our green salad was generous but nothing really special. The outside seating was very quiet and pleasant. Downside is, the line for food is long and doesn't move quickly.

  • Kristin B.

I really love this place, but it does have a few drawbacks. Pros: Great whole ingredients, good flavour, fast, cheep, and good portion size. Even the outdoor seating is cute and relaxed (Sellwood location). Cons: The hot sauce that they have is home made, which would be great but both the red and green sauce are lacking any spice or even flavour. Speaking of spice, if your ready for some awesome HOT/SPICY mex-food this really isn't a good place for you. Don't get me wrong the meats are very flavourful and all the dishes I have had are very enjoyable, but sometimes you want to sweat, not here. (unless your outside on a hot day) Other then that, I go to this place quite often, and try to get new things from the menu every time. I have yet to be greatly disappointed. So give it a try!

Good food. Quick. Consistent. best of all cheap. Love all the burritos and enchiladas. Only negative is there is no spice to the food. Mexican food should have options that are spicy and so far none of the things I have had (which is a good amount) have been spicy. Drink are alright...they lack substance a.k.a boozes. They need to step it up in that category.

If you are craving a burrito, you should go here. If you are craving it with mole sauce, you should definitely go here. The mole burrito (with carnitas) is mouth-wateringly good. Pair it with horchata and you'll be in heaven. I always eat here as a tradition whenever I get back in town (and also whenever I'm hungry). It's not the nicest place, but the house setup is neat. Service is fast and (mostly) friendly. Prices aren't bad. One of my favorite places in the lower SE.

Jesus God, I love cheap Mexican food. - most legit portions - cute little location - super quick - fingertips in the nachos. Seriously. I thought it was a piece of onion at first. Buuuuut, I'm hellza poor and believe in the no second rule. Yeah, I would hit it again. Maybe.

Two stars for having nice outdoor seating. I've had better Margaritas, and the actual food was tolerable. A Mexican place that doesn't have Tapatio? Even the lady who worked there sensed the tragedy.

I'm a little confused by the poor reviews for the Sellwood Cha Cha Cha. First, when you pay only 5 dollars for your meal, I don't think you're entitled to expect the utmost of gourmet. Second, for only 5 bucks, this place is fantastic! I got the Cha Nachos and they hit that perfect balance between toppings and chips, so that I could still eat them with my hands (until the very last bites) and I could enjoy all the flavors. Third, for a 5 dollar meal, this place is pretty cute and the patio seating is very nice. Fourth, since I lived in Southern California for 5 years, people just have to accept that you are hard pressed to find authentic Mexican food in Portland -- so this is good anglo-mex -- embrace it people. Search elsewhere for your true comida autentica. :)

When you walk in to this cute little Sellwood house, brightly painted inside and out, you'll like it. Its' colorful with magenta, orange, and red walls that give it an inviting feel and original artwork sprinkled around. One painting in particular, a well dressed Matador taunting a menacing bull, caught my eye and was so well done I almost wanted to pluck it right off the wall and ask "how much?" This establishement is a little different with their service, they have you order and pay directly up front when you walk in and things like utensils and water are self serve. There is nothing wrong with this, however, I would wait to tip until after your meal because if you tip generously ahead of time and get a stale taco shell, you may regret being such a philanthropist. This is not a free refill restaurant, further refills are half price and refills of their poorly made Horchata are full price. Strangely enough I did get a free refill on my sprite, but this may have been due to the fact that we were obviously writing down our thoughts on the meal. So there you have it, a small but to the point review. We don't recommend ChaChaCha if you're looking for an amazing meal. If you're looking for something mediocre, and fairly cheap, then this is the place. Read our full review of our individual meals with pictures on our blog!

A bit heavier than I would normally like, and the building they are in discourages large groups. Still, tasty and flavourful if you are the enchilada type. I might try one of the other branches, but since I can get better food cheaper from the taco trucks, why bother?

    (2)
  • Joshua M.

Friendly staff, decent but not amazing food. While I appreciate the homey feel of it, there tends to be a massive bottleneck at the door when you are trying to place an order. This place screams for the need of table service.

  • Catherine S.

I'm pretty shocked by the poor reviews on here. Everyone I know is fairly obsessed with chacha, and why wouldn't you be? great food, generous helpings, cheap prices, and super cute and cozy sellwood location / building. (much roomier and more comfortable than the pearl location). The burritos and anything with mole are my personal favorites on the menu.

  • Paula W.

Decent food for a decent price. The location is great for people watching but I was a little put off with snagging an outside table only to realize that I then had to wait in line at the door to place my order. I suppose that's how they can keep the prices so reasonable...not a lot of overhead for wages. The enchiladas I ordered were okay. Not exceptional, but not the worst I've ever had either. I did purchase the chips and salsa and have to say I thought the pico de gallo was fabulous. Nice and fresh and the right amount of chopped jalapenos to give it a great bite. Actually the pico was the best thing about the whole meal but that's okay. For $13.50 I got a big plate of food, chips and salsa and sangria. Not a bad buy in my book.

For me, this is like "feel-good" Mexican food. I don't know how else to describe it. The burritos are always gigante, and don't drip with tons of manteca, so that's a plus in my health book. Come starving, leave with half of your burrito. I've had the fish tacos, too, but they're not as satisfying as the burritos are, and you don't get quite as much bang for your buck. I do enjoy the mole burrito once in a while, which is a wet burrito with mole sauce on top instead of on the inside. However, the mole has a distinctly different taste than other recipes, and I haven't yet decided if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Or it could just be that your burrito has mole, and on top of the mole you also have onion and cotija cheese. Interesting combination, if you ask me. One downfall: You pay for the chips and salsa. But these things should wipe that out: -The salsa is DELISH pico de gallo, which means that it's fresh, which means tastier and healthier -They sell Pina Jarritos. Now, any authentic Mexican restaurant should carry both Jarritos and Manzana Lift (or some variation of apple soda), so this shouldn't be a surprise, but it was -The hot sauce is AMAZING, and I wish they sold it, because I would buy troves -The restaurant is inside an old (but brightly repainted) classic Sellwood-style house. Word. Or as they say it in the 'hood: Palabra.

This was a miss for me. The only reason I am even giving it two stars is because the chips and pico de gallo were quite good and Paul thought his meal was three stars. I got the enchilada plate one with veggies and one with cheese. It came with black beans and rice. I was excited, thinking that there would be some fabulous black beans, some awesome Spanish rice and a couple enchiladas! When the waiter put my plate down I was horrified! Everything was buried under this mess of cheese, sauce, and beans that did not appear to be black or pinto beans. They were possibly refried beans, I am still not sure. Everything tasted the same and it wasn't good. There were no spices or anything at all that I enjoyed. Aside from the chips and pico de gallo. The rest was just a big ole pile of brown slop. Ick. Paul got the chicken burrito plate and I swear the only reason he liked it was because of how much he liked the hot sauce on it. He just kept pouring that hot sauce on and was loving it. He agreed though that it wasn't the best quality. Plus, his was cold in the middle and hot on the outside. He said it tasted microwaved, especially considering how quickly the food came out. I won't go back and Paul said he only would if he knew people that were going. Oh, it is super cool looking inside. I loved that! It was all red and dark with cool paintings all over the walls. The people working there were really nice, that was a plus.

I like this place really just because of its cute little spot as a former Sellwood home. Its the same food you can get in any other Cha Cha Cha, which is always consistent in my experience. The food is inexpensive and you get lots of it. Its tasty and good, but at the same time its missing that genuine Mexican food quality, that spark that makes it so yummy I want to keep coming back. In this location, everyone in the place seems to know everyone else and the staff even sits down to chat with them. The staff was really friendly. If anyone knows of some good, genuine Mexican food (NOT TEX MEX) that tastes authentic and homemade, let me know. I've been sadly disappointed in other places, and unfortunately Cha Cha Cha is the closest I've come to decent Mexican food in Portland which isn't all that great.

We regularly eat at Cha Cha Cha, primarily the N. Portland and Hawthorne locations. First let me say that I LOVE the food at these two locations. We made the mistake of thinking the location in Sellwood served comparable food. The name, entire menu, and prices are the same, right? Wow, were we wrong. I ordered what I always order (Cha Plato Con Carne - grilled chicken) and my boyfriend ordered the beef nachos. Food arrived and the chicken was entirely greasy, dark meat morsels (tiny pieces with discoloration) with absolutely no seasoning or flavor. It was the worst chicken I have ever seen or tasted at a Mexican restaurant - including food carts and sketchy taco stands. I asked the counter person if the chicken usually had seasoning (mentioning that it usually does at the other locations) and she said that it is never seasoned. I told her my food was disgusting....no response. I approached the guy at the counter (manager?) and mentioned the lack of seasoning and pointed out that the "grilled chicken" was all dark meat while the other locations serve white-meat "grilled chicken". He told me this was standard and that the owner of the Sellwood and Milwaukie locations is a family member of the person who owns the (GOOD) locations in N. Portland and on Hawthorne. No offer for something different without the awful chicken or any expressed concern for that matter. I said to him: Ah, that explains why this food is different and disgusting (different owner). The manager watched us while I watched my boyfriend attempt to eat the very dried-out beef with soggy chips nachos he was served. I ate the beans, rice, and tortillas which were acceptable. While we were still there, we determined that this was our absolute worst restaurant experience to date. I have never, ever told restaurant employees that what was on my plate was disgusting. This is a first. Save your money or go to Taco Bell. I would be surprised if anyone eats here more than once (unless they have small kids as it appears to be kid-friendly). This location doesn't have a clue and truly belongs on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Blah, I do not get the love of Cha! Cha! Cha! in this city. This location has great outdoor seating and fun plates but the food is just not exciting. At.all. They've got a bit of everything on the menu but all of it seems pretty bland, often times including mystery meats and seemingly stale chips. It's fairly inexpensive, which is nice, but there's that old saying that you get what you pay for and I think that definitely fits the bill where Cha! Cha! Cha! is concerned. If you want to have a nice patio to sit on, people watch and drink some beer? Great, this place is fine but don't plan on any exquisite taqueria dining because this place doesn't cut it. I don't get the hype...never have, never will.

    (2)
  • Carissa W.

The Cha is good for wet burritos, mole, and Jarritos. Beer and tacos are another solid bet. Order at the counter and have your order delivered to a rustic table. Margaritas are highly recommended. The outdoor patio is fun in summer, and the large back dining room is good for groups.

  • Melissa P.

Horchata, mmmm. Really a perfect anytime drink. The Cha Nachos is a meal alone. The tacos are small and 2 bucks a pop, the chimichangas are delish and about $5.50. What I really like about this place is the Mexican is not heavy, a la Mazatlan, Juan Colorado, etc. It's fresh, smaller portions, very good prices, fast. *Unfussy*

Sometimes all you have is that 10$ and a substantial craving for the much under appreciated nacho. This is perfect for that sometime. Cha! Cha! Cha! is local, fast, and has an amazing selection for the vegetarian community. Sure it's not to the caliber of the Iron Horse (say what you will...that place is like Taco Bell with a 30$ bill) but the Iron Horse is the K-Mart of the Latin food world. This is more like Freddy's- not quite as great as Trader Joe's, but not quite as horrible as K-Mart...and it smells a lot better too. Their quesadillas are thick and cheese-laden, the nachos are delicious and cheap. The tacos are pretty great and have freshly prepared salsa fresca ladled lovingly over their open faces. If you aren't snooty and you enjoy something that you don't have to flash the price tag around on...you'll enjoy this just good Mexican food. Ignore my horrible syntax and rather strange vernacular and go check it out today!!!

Bla is right! VERY bland flavors to say the least. Portions are not great either. I have been to the one in downtown Milwaukie too and am not impressed a bit! The outside seating is nice but that is about it! Service was nothing as you order when you walk in....Look for another place as this is not the best at all......

  • Lyle M.

Checked this place out on a whim when a Mexican craving came on... the food was delicious, and I devoured my enchiladas with gusto. It had some nice outdoor seating, but you have to order at the counter inside rather than place an order with a waitress; I'm not sure if it works the same inside the restaurant or not. They bring your food out to you, and the prices were decent; they do, however, charge for chips, and the portions of guacamole and fresh salsa were small for the price. My girlfriend had a fish burrito that she enjoyed very much, and all of us in our four-person party seemed to enjoy their meals. We shall definitely visit again. Good for a quick Mexican fix.

  • Joseph H.

Cha! Cha! Bla! --- People love the Bla, because it's CHEAP, filling, and takes a step up above Taco Bell. Do you want some $4 dollar Mole Enchiladas, you can have them. Are you going to have to question whether you're eating real chicken breast or Cat? Yes, yes you are. Quality of food doesn't seem to be the point with these establishments. The buildings and setup all seem like they should be slinging higher quality grub, but they haven't risen to the occasion. Here's hoping they figure "it" out.

  • Harry H.

What happened to this place? A few years when it first opened, I used to eat here all the time. The burritos were huge, fresh, and delicious, even if not entirely 100% authentic Mexican food. But then things gradually started to go downhill. The filling became smaller, but the tortillas stayed the same size, until I felt like I was eating a flour burrito. The chorizo lost its spice. The margaritas lost their tequila. Finally, I ate here not long ago and ordered one of my old favorites -- the chicken mole. This time, the mole sauce was this nasty, thin, watery gunk with an slick of oil floating on top. I couldn't eat it.

Unfortunently, this restaurant does not pride itself on customer service or on the food it serves. First off, it must be stated that staff should not assume that a customer does not know how to speak Spanish when they blatantly say something negative about them right in front of them! I specifically ordered my food without cheese and of course there ended up being a large amount in my chimichanga. My friend ordered taquitos, they were slobbered with grease and looked to be cooked from the outside but were completely icy cold in the middle with the beef having a strange taste. I would highly recommend that you try another restaurant and not waste your time or money on rudeness and undercooked food!

I went here craving a burrito. I am a burrito fiend, and back in the Bay Area I would eat burritos all the time. Order the super burrito and you get the works -- meat, beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, guacamole, etc. They just don't HAVE that here. I have a feeling if I asked for a super burrito they would just give me a look. Maybe there is a way to order a burrito with everything in it, but I could no see anyway to do that on the menu. You can get the same small sized burrito with different combinations of ingredients, but you can't get a giant burrito with everything. And that's all I want, honestly. Edit: This article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa… talks about the kind of burritos I like. And Cha Cha Cha just ain't it.

F and I have visited once. We ordered salmon tacos - they tasted like they were made out of cat food. F ordered some other thing - we thought that even cold cat food taste better. Yuck. There are so many other affordable places to get a good bite to eat in town -- we won't waste money and stomach space on this place again.

I've gone here for lunch a couple of times recently. The Pollo Libre (chicken with bell peppers and goat cheese) is the burrito I started with and will probably never order anything else! The man at the cashier stand is always very nice and attentive enough to make you feel like you're being taken care of from the moment you walk in. Definitely a nice spot!

House margaritas were meh, ordered veggie tacos, they didn't tell me that wasn't available until after I paid, when I asked what wasn't available in the taco I was directed to another taco without answering the question. Servers are kind but overall, they just don't have their stuff together yet.

So from the outside it looks totally fancy and not like real mexican food. But once you get inside it's kind of grimy and totally more like a real mexican place! What is cool is that they have a large outdoor patio and it's all seat yourself. If you decide to dine in, you'll get a number and they will come bring your food to you. They have quite a few margatias to choose from and give you a full pint glass for the marg, which is plenty. It was quite delicious too! Not the strongest, but tastey! The food was pretty good! Not really like the most legit mexican food I have had, but it was yummy. We had a bowl and the tostitas. The bowl was of a pretty good size for a salad, and the tostitas I thought were going to be small but they were pretty large! You get two full sized burrito tortillas rolled up and filled with meat, veggies, and cheeeeese! Really good, i highly recommend. I also I also got a side of rice cuz I wasn't sure how much food it would be (ended up being more than enough) and that was good too! The employees are really nice and have no problems answering your questions. They will even come out and check on you! And they will also come to clear your plates, so don't worry about having to do that!

Writing a one star review typically causes me a fair amount of you're-being-too-harsh-guilt. Not here. Not now. Not for Cha Cha Cha. It was *that* bad. Whatever image you have in your head after reading that last sentence, worsen it. You might be close then. CCC employs the order and pay at the register technique here and a large group walked in right after we did so I had to order on the fly--not too hard as they had an entire segment of their posted menu board dedicated to The Wholesome Bowl. Done deal. Let's add a Pomegranate Margarita to that and you can find me waiting at an outdoor table enjoying the festive courtyard. The margarita came first. It was unremarkable mostly because if the plan is to serve a margarita in a pint glass, maybe add a bit more tequila so it's actually a solid flavor component instead of an assumed (or even imaginary) ingredient. I'm a fan of good tequila and want to taste it in my drink. About 20 minutes later the food arrived. My bowl and his burrito. The burrito conjured up flashbacks of cafeteria food, mass produced without a lick of concern for presentation. It was not a burrito you look at longingly. And there's not a lot of burritos on this good earth that I will say that about. I've even been known to eat the frozen El Monterey burritos you get on sale for 39 cents at Safeway. And, our poor burrito, did he have beans and rice on the side to distract attention away from his lackluster appearance? Nope. Just a sad little burrito on a plate, disappointed he'll never be a real burrito. Likewise, the bowl was not particularly appetizing, which is okay because we weren't given any silverware with which to eat it anyhow. Or any napkins. Or salsa. Or tortillas. I had to request them and the response I received was anything but apologetic. Bad day, I suppose, but I'm not asking for anything extreme, just what I ordered, paid for, and the necessary tools to consume it. Reasonable request, really. And so when I do take a bite, I am ready for something to save the day. A strong sauce or expertly prepared veggies or even especially fresh kale. Again, CCC couldn't deliver. This was a bowl of old, limp vegetables with literally no discernible flavor. Bland as bland can be without being cardboard. So I put some red sauce on and then some green and then more red and then give up completely and eat the avocado slices in defeat.

And the Portland parade of sad Mexican food continues. Truth be told, this was our third choice of restaurants in the Sellwood neighborhood, and we only stopped in because options 1 and 2 were on long waits that we needed to avoid. Still, I am a man that loves Mexican food, and I figured that this place, with all of their PDX locations, is successful enough that it's got to be at least decent. Well, I was wrong. While our entire group was pretty disappointed in their meals, I'll focus on what I personally ate. We ordered two sides of guac, which was actually pretty good, though spicier than I had expected. I'm fine with that, but it's just something to be aware of. I had a carnitas burrito, topped with their red sauce and the rice/beans combo. Long story short? It wasn't good. The meat was dry, and the rice and beans seemed somehow to be undercooked. Both were crunchy, not a good thing. Service was pretty wonky too. The restaurant was pretty slow yet we had to wait forever. Whoever was running the register seemed standoffish. Well, that might not be the right word... but she had totally run out of Fs to give about being friendly or welcoming. We had to go up and ask for our second order of guac, and it came out without any sort of mea culpa or even chips. We had to flag them down again to remind them that chips come with the guac. When our food did FINALLY come out, it was just sort of dropped onto the table and then they scurried off. I hate, hate, hate how restaurants in Portland make you tip in advance and then don't live up to their end of the bargain. Cha! Cha! Cha! is one of the worst offenders yet. Somebody, anybody, please just tell me where I can find high quality Mexican food in Portland. Because it's sure not coming from here.

Cha cha cha is really OK, but this one is not even up to that standard. The food was boring, overpriced and employees were unenthused. Would NOT go back to this location.

We took my mom here for her birthday and all five of us loved our lunches. We started with chips with pico de gallo and guacamole, both delish, guac just how I like it. You do have to purchase these. Daughter said her tortilla soup was delicious, teenage son loved his burrito and could only eat half it was so big. Mom had enchiladas and my aunt had chicken fajitas. I had taco salad with steak. Everything was excellent, fresh and flavorful. There was lots of leftovers to take home, portions were good but not too huge. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices are not high, average or less than. The atmosphere is colorful and funky but tasteful with cloth tablecloths and artsy Mexican decor. We'll definitely be back. The outdoor seating looks tempting for a nice day.

This place is friendly and clean, but the food is just OK for Portland standards for Latin American food. You can walk in and order a burrito and margarita at the counter for under $10 and they bring it to your table. Good food specials during happy hour from 2-5 every day. When other places are a wait, or you need a quick dinner to go for hungry folks at home, this place hits the spot.

Coming from Phoenix, I was confused by some things about Cha Cha Cha! Where is the salsa? And paying for chips seemed unnecessary, especially when you have to tip pre-food or service. No refried beans, OK, that happens...but its still disappointing. We ordered a cheese quesadilla and it was literally what I could make at home in the microwave...which even at home, I wouldn't microwave...floppy bland cheese dough. The menu said it came with sour cream, guac and pico...came out missing sour cream. We tried four kinds of tacos, all bleh, dry, boring, or bad taste combos. The menu is big, but not very customizable. I don't like soft corn tortillas, but that seemed to be the only option for tacos. And with tons of taco options, that is kind of sad. Also Happy Hour is only 2-5, though not written anywhere...which isn't very possible timing for people who work. We showed up at 5:30 thinking we were early. ;)

Hubs and I stopped in here yesterday on a whim. It was really good. I was surprised by the fact that you have to pay extra for chips and salsa, but we opted to have chips and guacamole so that really wasn't an issue since they brought us some salsa to go with that. The chips were good and fresh too. The menu is large and has some really good choices on it. The hubs had the Molcajete. It was HUGE. It came out in a very large, very hot stone dish. It smelled divine, a lovely mixture of beef, sausage, onions, peppers, cheese...mmm. Hubs let me taste it. I had Chile Colorado tacos. They were quite tasty too. Nothing spectacular, but good. The tortillas were nice and fresh and the meat was very tender. We had dessert too. The flan was good - not quite as sweet as I like it, but still good. But, oh, the chocolate caramel cake...for someone with a raging sweet tooth like me. It was heaven. I could have eaten 3 pieces and probably come back for more. The setting was cute. It is in a little house and has ample outdoor seating for when the weather is better. We will definitely be back.

I came with 2 other adults and a dog. We sat on the patio. Two ordered burritos which were larger than a can of Coke. I had the fish tacos. They were served with coleslaw and smothered in a guacamole sauce. The sauce was running and semi sweet. Pro: Raisins in the coleslaw, nice patio that allows a dog. Con: have to pay for chips and salsa. Chips were over cooked. I will go back.

Everything is very bland. My fiancé ordered a salmon burrito that he constantly needed to add hot sauce to to add flavor. I ordered their wholesome bowl which was quite literally just soggy greens and black beans. Chips and pico were cheap, but I can see why. The pico was 80% water, so obviously we added hot sauce to that too. Overpriced everything. Will definitely not go back.

Wow, Selwood is busy on the weekends! We drove around for about 20 minutes looking for something to eat and decided on cha! cha! cha! This was my first time at this location and I was very hungry after two days of moving. It was a beautiful day so we grabbed a beer and sat out on the patio out front. The food was amazing, the restaurant was cool and full of character. This was a good experience but I would have liked to see chips and salsa included which is always nice. We will definitely be back.

We've been going here for several years and it's okay. What holds this place back from being amazing is our food always seems room temp rather than hot. I've started asking for them to make it well heated and that didn't help. It's made it so we only go here when we're in a hurry for a room temp meal. The outdoor seating is what keeps this place a jewel in sellwood. They have a large outdoor eating area and so on a nice summer day, this is the place for lunch outside.

Employees taking orders are very rude and make it clear you are interrupting their texting time and don't want to be there. The employees delivering food are great. Taste- so so. Can't help but never come back due to girls taking orders.

Delish : ) Knowledgeable about Gluten free and vegan options, as well as ways to modify dishes to make them allergy-friendly. Also service is always super fast, we have never waited more than 5 minutes to get our food.

It's way past time for me to update my review for my local Cha Cha Cha. A few years back they updated their menu and I found my favorite item, it is the Pollo Libre: Grilled Chicken Breast with Bell Peppers, Onions, Goat Cheese, Black Beans and Rice all rolled up in the Tortilla of your choice, I usually go for Whole Wheat. This taste sensation runs about $6.50 and I always feel it is money well spent. You order at the counter and they will bring your meal to you. The staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful inside and there are lots of tables outside as well.

I'll give Cha Cha Cha the benefit of the doubt that maybe this restaurant-in-a-house serves decent food. But grrrr... their web site ( chachachapdx.com ) says the Sellwood location opens at 10:00am every day. But when we came just before 11:00am today, the thing was closed tighter than a tick with chairs stacked on the tables.

Had a nice dinner here last week. Had the pablano chicken taco plate. Flavors were good, rice was a little blah. I wouldn't say they are AS good as the Cha Cha Cha on Lombard... But they were great for the price and convenience, and the service was very good!

The employee taking our orders dealt with customers in the same manner that many people pick off something gross stuck to their skin. Speaking of which, the burritos were pretty gross - arguably worse than the service. Chunks of soapy, chemically tofu, or oily "grilled" vegetables gave our bag burritos a somewhat solid form before each burrito in turn blew out it's saturated tortilla skin and chuted lukewarm gray liquid into a pool on the plate. Our burritos wallowed in the pool like hippos.

Well, damn. That was a disappointment. My husband planned a really fun birthday for me, including lunch at this location. I'd had takeaway burritos from the Hawthorne location several times and was excited to dine in at this location. They get points for funkiness. The building is clearly an old house that has been painted bright, garish, festive colors. That's cool, and I know they were hella busy on this beautiful sunny Saturday, but all the tables were messy. Also it's awkward when there's a crowd because people line up behind the wooden door so people just arriving open the door into them and then have to stand there holding the door open while they wait in line, which lets bugs in. I ordered a plated veggie enchilada dish and my hubby had a veggie burrito with seitan. My dish was, somehow, flavorless. Just bland and pretty cafeteria-like. My hubby said his burrito was more bland black beans than anything else. Disappointing. The only reason I'm giving them 2 stars instead of one is because, while we were waiting in line, some dumb oaf in front of us knocked over the rack of menus when then sent some of the many drink bottles sitting on the counter crashing to the floor. All the staff were really cool about it. They just got busy cleaning up the mess. I respect their professionalism. I think I would have stood there killing the man with my ojos malos. This was my hubby's first time dining at a Cha! Cha! Cha! I'm working hard to convince him that I don't know what went wrong but let's please please try the Hawthorne location before he writes them off forever because I've gotten great eats there.

We dropped in on a slow day, which might have explained the slow service we received. Despite that, our meal was clearly made fresh. It came hot and was very good. I've had better burritos, but I've had far worse as well.

Food is generally pretty good, but I always pick a burrito that comes with guacamole on it, and at this location they frequently leave the guacamole out. Most of the burritos that come with guacamole are not burritos that I want without the guacamole, so it's really disappointing. Plus I usually do take-out, so by the time I've figured out that my burrito is wrong, I've already paid and gone home. If the menu has changed, update your website!!

It's cute, the rajas quesadilla is good, the water is self-serve - so you never go thirsty! - and when the sun is out you can enjoy some of those fine rays outside. The space is so big and never full, so I have studied here in the past for a couple hours. But..... I always feel like I get attitude, the prices (never cheap to begin with) have gone up since my last visit, and the food is generally bland (here's looking at you burrito and vegetarian tortilla soup). AND. The big reason I'm grumbly right now is because at about 8:45 pm, I specifically asked what time they close, and was told 10 pm. Then, at 9 pm sharp they began to close. They said sorry. But geez. If there is nobody in the place and you're going to close up in 15 minutes, *tell me so.*

The Lengua Chimichanga, get it! The first time I had the Chimichanga at Cha Cha Cha, I loved it and no other ever compared. Fried to perfection, it stayed crunchy to the end even with all the toppings. Then I'd ordered it again at the location on Fremont, I was disgusted because it was not the same. Since that time, when I craved Mexican food, Cha Cha Cha was at the bottom of my list. Recently, I went back to the Sellwood location and discovered...it hasn't changed from my initial visit. The quality of food is very dependent on the location. Redeemed!

This place gets an extra star just for have such a large patio space. It's a self-serve Taqueria, with an impressive selection of margaritas (like the Hibiscus and Mango). The Pina Colada is chock full of coconut and super creamy but doesn't taste like there is much alcohol in it. The tacos are good $2-5 depending on the fillers. The potato once was a nice surprise and the al pastor is amazing! The chips are fresh and crunchy and they have a great salsa verde and red hot sauce. Not as cheap as other Taquerias in the area but the food is good and you are pretty much paying for the Sellwood location.

We like coming here when we're in the neighborhood, it's our steady place these days. The best aspect is most definitely the people who work here from the front register to the guys in back and everyone in between. It's nice to see the same faces each time and it's always a pleasant atmosphere. I love the table sauces, they seem to work with almost anything. I'll pretty much order anything with salmon and the taco salad with salmon is my new obsession.

Sigh, it is a sad fact of life that not all Cha Cha Chas are created equal. I've been to other Cha Cha Chas and I don't know what's up with this one, but since I don't have anything great to say I guess I'll cut to the complainity chase. I ordered the Mexican Salad with shrimp and while it was very pretty, I'm torn on whether to complain about the quantity of shrimp or give them an extra star for not subjecting me to more of them. I know my camarones pretty well, and quite a few ways to prepare them...diabla, con ajo...but if I was going to describe the flavor profile of these shrimp I'd have to say "con catsup" . Bland, tomatoey, and strangely sweet. Add onto that that the pico de gallo I ordered on the side for my kids nachos was so bland, that even he (who doesn't like things extra spicy) said: "Daddy, I don't like this salsa" "Why not Boogie?" and then he summed up the meal perfectly. "It's boring".

Wow! The cha plato con carne was so good! Every bite was delicious. I got mine with pastor. Their pastor has pineapple involved and while I didn't think that would be great it was very good. Go without sour cream. The sour cream isn't the best quality. The black beans were pretty good. The tortillas were good. I also ordered a side of chips and salsa. The pico was not that good and neither were the chips. The pico was all onion and the chips were cold and needed salt. BUT I was pleasantly surprised at the simple goodness of the dinner I ordered. I would get it again for sure!

Still a fan but all the damned kids suck. I watched a group of parents not too long ago change their baby ON THE F***ING TABLE. ON THE TABLE!!! That's where people eat for gods sake! I really, really have a problem with parents feeling entitled in a restaurant to do whatever they feel just because they multiplied. You aren't special, your kid(s) are not special and you cannot change a diaper on a table!!!! On a positive note, I did let the staff know since they could not have known this had happened and like lightening they were out there cleaning and sanitizing this table. BRAVO!

I had a hard time deciding between two or three stars here. I went with three because it was really just one thing that irritated me enough for me to want to bump it down. My husband and I stopped on a bike ride to eat there on a hot summer day because they have a great patio. We ordered chips and salsa and a burrito mojado spicy tinga to share. We also got a couple of margaritas, yay! I have to say, the burrito was pretty good and definitely big enough to share. The margaritas were pretty tasty too. Here's what irritated me. You have to pay for the chips and salsa here, which I understand and that's fine. But they don't even give you actual salsa, it's just some pico de gallo and a very small amount of it. When we asked for more pico, we were told it would be another $1.25! Seriously? I could fit what they gave us originally in the palm of my hand. I'm not in any big hurry to go back. Cha, make some real salsa and if you're going to charge for chips and salsa, give refills. Talk about cheap.

We tried to go somewhere else for dinner on Friday night and the line was so long we ended up at Cha! Cha! Cha! I'd never been but it was pretty darn good! The food was tasty--if not humongous serving sizes--and super cheap. For $20, we got 2 burritos, a beer, soda and chips and salsa. I was happy with the food. The Sellwood restaurant (where we went) was super cute too. It's in an old house and it was funky and decorated in a weird way. I'd definitely go back.

Been here a few times now as it's right down the street from house. I am just continually disappointed by it. Something bad has almost always happened with my food, other than it being just kind of bland: bones in my chicken, hair in the beef, hard clumps of overcooked rice. I have friends that swear by this place, and maybe I just don't get it. I'll stick to going to La Sirenita, down the street for cheaper and better mexican fare.

It's good, it's cheap, it hits the mex food craving! I like the crazy little house this one is in, it's Portlandia all the way! Great service and fast too! The enchiladas are muy bueno! I only gave them three starts because they don't quit measure up to my fav mex joint....but when I don't feel like emptying the bank, this is a great place to go to.

Quick, think of two things that are NOT Mexican. I can: Caesar Salad and Tempeh. Yet somehow, some way both of these things combined turned out to be a surprise hit lunch! Kade M pointed out to me, and rightly so, that the Caesar was actually invented in Tijuana, but it's still not in the front of my mind when I think of Mexican fast food. They also top it with red onions and cotija, and don't use a Caesar dressing, so now that I think about it, the whole salad's named wrong. But anyway... The Chas around town have a new-ish menu that now includes what they call the "organico" (yeah, because there is no Spanish word for tempeh, I would have gone the same route), which is small cubes of tempeh cooked up in a red chile sauce with fresh spinach and mushrooms. Delightful! This is available as tacos, a burrito, or an add-on to anything for a couple of bucks. I've now tried it all three ways and I must admit the Organico Caesar was the best. I'm not normally a frequent tempeh fan, but they're doing something right over there with that stuff. CCC is convenient, quick, cheap, fresh, and pleasant. The Milwaukie location has a screamin' happy hour, too, with super cheap snacks and margaritas and sangria deals. It's not hard to get a huge lunch there for $6 or less (several items under $4). The chips/guac are decidedly 'meh' but I've always found everything else there great. I like that every CCC has a little different feel to it, different specials- Milwaukie being the best, with this Sellwood location in an extremely close second.

Okay so first off there are a lot of Cha Cha Cha's, This review is specifically for the Sellwood Location. The food is definitely different at each location. I like the sellwood one for the atmopshere of the old house, the friendly staff, quick service, outside seating, and ultimately the food. This place won my heart with their chicken chimichanga. Its huge, and covered in sour cream, pico, lettuce, guac, and cheese! The burritos, are hit or miss sometimes though, but the chimi always puts a bullet in my hunger. For burrito I usually go with the pastor, which is pretty good at cha cha cha. For $6 the chimichanga is beyond worth it, go get one.

My sister ate at a different Cha Cha Cha location a couple years ago. Everyone in her party got food poisoning that resulted in 24 hours of diarrhea. I thought that since it was a few years ago, surely it was a fluke and that if they did have problems, they would have been resolved. I could not have been more wrong. I ordered a carne asada burrito for lunch at the Sellwood location that was fairly good. Not great, but fairly good. Later that afternoon I started to have horrible diarrhea. It didn't stop after 24 hours. It didn't stop until after multiple visits to the doctor, fecal testing at the hospital, and heavy dosing of yogurt and probiotics. I had diarrhea for literally a month after eating that meal. My diet the day I at at Cha Cha Cha was otherwise normal, so unless my Cheerios somehow spoiled from one day to the next, there was nothing else that could have caused it. Every time I hear someone mention going to Cha Cha Cha, I think of having to get up 5 times in a night to sprint to the toilet. Never again.

Mexican food or reconstituted astronaut food? You decide. Spongy tofu, guacamole with the texture of body lotion, and frail, flavorless chips accompanied my bowl of lettuce. The black beans weren't bad, but geez - open a can, pour 'em out, warm 'em up - even I could do that. Don't trust a Mexican joint that doesn't have Tapatio or Cholula on every table. To detect any sort of burn from Cha's squeeze-bottle hot sauce, you'd probably have to squirt it in your eye.

There is simply no reason to eat Mexican food from large corporate chains in Portland when there are eight local Cha! Cha! Cha! restaurants strategically placed around town. They serve up authentic Mexican--fresh, tasty, quick and affordable. Your taco paradigm will shift after eating here; many fillings to choose from, and a value at under $3 each! Show up on the "shoulder" of the lunch hour if you want to avoid the rush...I have never waited more than a couple minutes to order, even on weekends.

I ate the fish tacos there the other night and felt immediately ill. After a disappointing night on the town b/c of my upset stomach, I went to bed, hoping it was over. No, I was awake at 5:30am extremely ill. I do not recommend the fish tacos. At. All. And the waitress was pretty irritated that we were even there at all ordering. Like we were making her job hard by giving her business.

My tall leggy blonde and I decided to stop in to the Sellwood Cha cubed for a quick bite. I was reluctant and had other ideas since it is located right next to Oaks Bottom Pub, and the idea of a good pint is like a siren's call and extremely difficult to resist. After a few minutes of reflection, and my mini tantrum not having any affect, we decided the pint could wait and Mexican food was the fare for the evening. She should have trusted my tingly spider senses...the beer would have been the better choice. We each ordered a burrito to go and tortilla soup...the food was good. For dressed up fast food, you certainly get your money's worth. That wasn't the problem...it was the service that was terrible. There was only one other couple in the converted old home, yet our food took way too long to arrive. However, we got to listen to the two people at the front register carrying on a lively and heated discussion. Both had a very flippant attitude, and seemed way more concerned with their own agenda then with taking care of the patrons. I am a good cook...part of the reason I go out is for the service, well and to flirt with the cute waitresses. I digress...overall, this visit left a bad taste in my mouth, one that the above average food did little to quell.

Having lived down the street since literally one month before this location opened, we've eaten their food many times (usually we get take out) but with mixed results, and that is exactly the problem... It can be so good we get cravings for their burritos but sometimes the food is under-cooked. We've also received the wrong items a surprising amount of times, not sure if it is a language barrier or because they barely seem to end their personal conversations long enough to do the job properly. We have also put in our two cents directly at their location. I honestly hope the overall quality here improves. If it does I will update this review.

This was the second place I attempted to get mexican food after moving to Portland... and after the first place I tried (cant remember the name of it) I was not really looking forward to another... but MAN!! I am so glad I did!! Now... I am glad YELP has specific locations because the one in Sellwood is the ONLY one I have enjoyed!! (I will review Hawthorne separately) But seriously....growing up with a grandmother from Mexico I am sorta picky... and I dont like all the frilly stuff that most mexican food comes with...it should be simple and tasty and that is it! Cha Cha Cha in Sellwood has hit the nail on the head. Along with staying open till 10pm on weeknights and serving some hard alcohol ....they are really just super stars with super service and amazing food. If you wanna know where I am at when I am hungry! Its as easy as 1...2...3 Chas!

The quality of the food here has improved over the last year, and overall its now becoming one of the better choices for Mexican food in Sellwood. I was a fan of La Sirenita but will their recent drop in quality, I've switched my allegiance (as it were) to Cha! Cha! Cha!. The Pollo Libre burrito is quite excellent. Haven't tried the rest of the menu, but I'm working my way there.

This place is okay, the staff isn't very welcoming and that can make for a slightly uncomfortable experience. The food is so-so, and there is definitely better Mexican food AND service to be had in the Sellwood/Moreland area. Don't waste a good craving or your money unless it's you just want some good horchata.

It's actually a 2.701, and this is why: 1) It was a gorgeous day and there is a view of Mt. Hood from the seat closest to the Post Office. A view of Mt. Hood walking into any restaurant is a star in my book. 2) It was a sunny, gorgeous day and we sat outside, another star. 3) Two people can share a $5 veggie burrito and a side and eat for less than $6 each, which makes it to the $6 list. Another star. 4) It gets 1 star for the food. My wife said the Fish tacos were pretty OK, but she would have rather had them on flour tortillas, which they don't have in that size. The veggie burrito was soft and felt good in my mouth, but it wasn't that yummy. I could have eaten half and been full, but it was all wet and I couldn't take the other half home to eat later. Argh. The beans and rice was 1/2 good (the beans) and half bad (the rice). The only reason we went there today was because I was taking a photo of Mt. Hood and this lady comes by and says, "don't take my photo." I told her I was just taking a photo of the hood. She turned around and said, "I have never noticed that!" And then she said, "This place (Cha Cha) has great beans and rice, and it's cheap!" She got the cheap part right - $3 for a side of beans and not very good rice. The rice was also in the grilled veggie burrito which made it only half good. There weren't many grilled veggies by the way. So, in summary, go for the view on a nice day and order the fish tacos. Oh- the lady didn't understand our orders, so double-check or she may try to charge you for the more expensive items. Coincidence? I don't know. Could have been a language barrier thing. Mi Espanol isn't too bueno. Minus .299 stars. Did I mention it was a nice day?

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
