Our favorite sushi place. At a time when some of the upscale, high end design sushi places get all the good press, this place sticks to the basics and delivers high quality sushi at fair prices. I'm willing to pay the big bucks for the fancy stuff.... But why? When I can eat wonderful, fresh, delightful sushi for half the cost. We love the baked dungeness crab on top of the salmon roll (Baked Crab Roll). We love the SE 82nd roll and the Denver Nugget Roll. The simple tuna rolls are super and the ngiri is fantastic. Service is terrific. Unpretentious staff. Usually the owners are doing the serving. We've been here many, many times over past year and have not been disappointed. 5 stars all the way.

Really fabulous sushi, fresh fish, amazing sunimono and truly a great selection. Sometimes, there's a bit of a wait, but it's so worth it. Their combination plates are truly combinations with tempura, teriyaki, sushi, and just enough rice to compliment but not dominate. Can be a bit pricey, depending on what you get, but everything is amazingly fresh. The place is owned by Japanese and ran by authentic sushi Masters. No fakery here. Good beer selection and hot teas. DO make the time to go in, you'll be glad you did.

The sushi here is always excellent, the wait staff is very polite, and the prices are great for the amount you get, (the sashimi plate is massive and fresh!). The sake selection is worth looking at and if you think you will be back, buy by the bottle. They will save if for you in the back with your name written on it! Also, I am told they have a large room upstairs for secluded private parties. All around awesome, one of my staples for dining.

Bluefin is a great out-of-the-way, reasonably priced sushi bar. It's nothing amazing but they definitely have a few great rolls (rock n roll, blackjack) and their other dishes are pretty tasty as well. They definitely have excellent service, the staff is always friendly and efficient. The presentation is great - I love the beauty of the teriyaki chicken! All of the rolls always come out looking beautiful and appetizing - and they are!

This was a good spot for sushi. I've for sure had better quality but it was 4 star good and the service was decent.

Fantastic, fresh, friendly. Ithe rolls and sashimi are great. Staff is polite, attentive but not hovering. Small neighborhood feel, perfect for Portlad!

My husband and I won't get sushi anywhere else in Portland! If you love non conveyor belt sushi and owners who know what they are doing then come here.

Fantastic place! Might be our new sushi spot. Denver Nugget & Samuri specialty maki were fantastic and they have all the standards. Everything was super fresh. Really comfortable/casual and decent prices.

My two visits to Bluefin reminded me of life before meeting my much better half. It was like meeting someone and thinking "hmmm, maybe," then meeting them again and thinking "yeaah, what was I thinking." Visit One: The Madai skewed my perspective, two great pieces of nigiri, amidst a bunch of mediocre ones. Like being distracted by a pair of beautiful eyes when nothing else was going right. Visit Two: Unagi Donburi, who serves this over sushi rice? Instead of a single broiled slab of fresh water eel served over plain steamed rice, I received a bowl of sushi rice, with a bunch nigiri sized unagi pieces. It was sweet, but not in a good way. Miso soup, also too sweet. Tempura, not light and crispy (oh and another weird sweet dipping sauce). Hamachi nigiri, poorly cut, sad example of a great fish. Scallop mayo, horrific, emaciated looking nigiri with weird mildly spiced sauce. CSI playing on large LCD screen, it's an okay show, but autopsies during dinner didn't help food that was already failing. Basically a spendy way to find out "I ain't never going there again." I feel bad, the people working seem nice. What I haven't quite figured out about Portland's fairly dismal Japanese food is whether places can't get even the basics (like rice and sauces) right or if they're trying to please the palates of those who have no concept of what the food should actually taste like (which is the case with much of PDX's Hawaiian food). If this all sounds a little harsh, in this case a "Meh, I've experienced better," two stars is actually me being nice.

Awesome sushi with great prices! There's a larger private room upstairs that is great for groups.

My wife and I were driving around and we were getting hungry. Sushi sounded good to us and we ran across the Bluefin Sushi Bar on Broadway. Never been before. Kind of a funky little hole in the wall place with maybe 8 to 12 tables. The interior looked about 15 years old or so. We shared 2 different rolls (Tempura Crunch Roll & Philadelphia) then I ordered the Red Dragon Roll as well. It took a little while to get the food even though their was only 2 other couples there. We really enjoyed the sushi, it was a nice change from our regular sushi hangouts. Their prices were comparable to other sushi places. We're thinking of trying the one in Happy Valley sometime and seeing how it compares to this one.

This was a very satisfying lunch. My friend and I ordered a Cherry Blossum, a Yummy Yummy and a Dynamite to share. The rolls were large for the price and very delicious, the tempura was light and there was just the right amount of sauce. The avocado was delicious and so was the fish. The green tea is only a dollar... It's a bag instead of a pot but it's still good and the waitress kept coming to refill with hot water. She was very friendly and prompt. My friend and I each ordered miso. It's not the best but still good. For regulars, there's a stamp card so you can save some money.

You couldn't pay me to go back to this place. I walked in at 12:30pm on a Monday. The place was not busy - there were only two occupied tables. I ordered two avocado rolls to-go. This is where things go drastically wrong. 1) The menu says rolls are 8 pieces. I ordered 2 rolls. I got 12 pieces. I didn't realize this until I got back to work. 2) The menu says avocado rolls are $2.95. I ordered 2 rolls. My Visa was charged $8.40. 3) The waitress tells me *as she's handing me my debit receipt* that there's a charge for using a credit card for orders under $10. I tell her I would have gladly given her cash instead of a card if I had known this. She then tells me she doesn't know how to undo the charge to my card. At this point, I just signed the receipt and walked out in disgust. The worst service I've ever received in Portland, and it's not close.

  • Olivia T.

Pros: - Fresh salmon - Good miso soup - Rice was pretty tasty - Comfy little place Cons: - Prices for dinner are pretty high. Rolls are $9 - $10 per plate. - Slow service. - The server charged our cards incorrectly. Instead of splitting the tab, she charged half on my card and a full amount on my friend's card. It happened after 15 minutes waiting for her to pick up our bill. Summary: It's a-ok place. Maybe for lunch is a better value then dinner. I'll probably come back but probably not on a Saturday night even though they weren't that busy, seemed like they couldn't catch up with what's going on with their customers.

Friendly service, good sushi but a star deduction for having the smallest pieces of yellowfin I have ever been served in the Portland area. I am not expecting Saburo sized sushi but I do like to be able to take two bites rather than easily stuffing one piece into my mouth without choking. They have great, fresh fish and my favorite is the creamy scallops but I get them spicy. They also have really mastered the art of cooking the rice so it sticks together. Very nice little place!

Not that great. Lame service (attitude) and the prices are kinda rapey. There are other sushi places around that are better.

This gem is nestled on a corner of a street off Sandy Blvd and could be easily passed by if you were not in the know. I wouldnt say it was as good as it gets because I dont feel that is their goal. They are as good as Mio but more family atmosphere. They also have a great regular punchcard and a patio. Skip the Sake and you can keep your bill in the $ range for two people. Very nice date night spot. Great roll selection. Nigiri was amazing quality fish and our fellow patron really made our night.

What sushi restaurant or any restaurant for that matter stops seating at 850 pm when they don't close until 10??? We were planning on spending quite a bit of money there. Disappointing.

My boyfriend and I have been to many sushi restaurants and we love to eat here. The place is small but they put care into their sushi and staff doesn't bother you or make awkward conversations. Love this place!

Let me just tell you, after years of dinning at Bluefin Sushi Bar I still love it like the first time I stepped into this place. Just a Note Bluefin sushi Bar on Broadway and Happy Valley Oregon are the same Chain. NOTE THEY ARE NOT CONVEYOR BELT SUSHI and are not affiliated with the Bluefin Conveyor belt in Downtown Portland. Just Happened that both places have similar Names but I promise you Bluefin in Broadway and Happy Valley is a way better choice ( no hard feelings to conveyor belt lovers, I just like my food made by order). SO fellow Yelpers , please be careful when you are writing a review on yelp that you are doing so on the correct business. I hate to see my favorite restaurants getting other restaurant's unpleasant vibe. Thanks for reading my rant!

Bluefin sushi is a great place to satisfy a sushi craving. Prices are super reasonable and quality is high. Service can be a bit spotty and I have experienced overcharging on my bill twice (unintentional) but I still love the place. Their Denver Nugget Roll is my favorite and is always ordered first. Their tempura is also quite nice. Light on non greasy as it should be. I have had sushi in some very expensive and upscale restaurants that did not come close to the quality of Bluefin.

Looks like a shack from the outside, cute decor inside. Mildly modern with a splash of Asian art. The service was top notch, the raw fish was above average and it was all decently priced.

This is a favorite place I go with my Dad... He is a regular and we get amazing customer service. My boys like to come with us but it is my 6 year old Special Needs Daughter that LOVES to come here. The staff is so friendly and always find us a place where we can tuck her wheelchair in. I love when the weather is nice we can sit outside. The prices are good for what we order which my favorite is the SPICY TUNA roll and the New York roll. My daughter Piper likes the Cucumber & Avocado rolls. It is right next to the Hollywood Theater and other quaint places. I have always been for lunch, had great friendly service and have never been disappointed with the food items ordered.

I wanted to try someplace different from the usual 2 sushi places I frequent, and this place had good reviews so thought we'd give it a try. Honestly, I hope to save others from this mistake. The first sign that something was wrong was the miso soup, which tasted like dish soap. then we sat for about 20 minutes with our soup bowls cold on the table, no one came to check on us. When the sushi finally came, it was a serious let down. My dining companion ordered an unagi roll, which they had doused with like half a gallon of sweet sauce. All of our rolls and my nigiri were on the same plate with it, so everything ended up absolutely swimming in this sauce. Swimming. Like the bottom of the plate was just a huge puddle. For something like nigiri, which is about delicate flavors, it was inexcusable. Why not serve it on a different plate? The yellowtail nigiri was pretty much the only good item, the tuna nigiri was flavorless and tough. The roll I got was slathered in mayo and completely fell apart- it was impossible to eat, I really needed a spoon. My dining companion liked the tempura rolls he got, but that was about it. I would not go back.

The StepDude likes to come here with his crew so he got us all to go one night. I have to say it was a great experience. There were six of us in all so they gave us a private room upstairs. And although it was close to closing time, they never let us feel rushed, not even a little bit. The nigiri was exceptional and some of the rolls were mind-blowing. I particularly loved the Denver Nugget (it's covered in spicy tuna - what's not to love?) and my cousin kept going back for the White Russian maki. I also devoured a Dragon Roll, I think. It all happened so fast. The carnage was terrifying. Yeah, the edamame had that not-so-fresh feeling, but it was the end of the day when we got there so I have to cut them a little slack. Since one can't be too careful, I plan to go back at least a few more times to verify the four stars!

hummmph. I'm full of big sighs and disappointing pouty faces after this one. Why, dear yelpers? Oh I'll tell you why. Because while I could have force fed myself the tender melt-in-my-mouth nigiri until it came out of my nose, (or worse...) everything else about Bluefin was subpar. Let me paint you a more vivid picture: The nigiri was fresh, tender perfection. It tasted like I was swimming in the ocean and gnawing off bites of fish as they swam by. (As opposed to other sushi bars where nigiri tastes like I'm licking the bottom of a fish tank.) But while it's great for the nigiri to fall apart in your mouth, it's not good for the edamame to do the same thing. Or the cucumber salad. Or the chopsticks. If you're down for heavenly hand-formed clumps of raw fishies, give Bluefin a shot. If you're looking for extras, as I mentioned earlier, you'd find Bluefin to be a better golfing partner than dining option.

This is our favorite go-to sushi place. There are others that are cheaper, with smaller, less creative rolls (read: mio), and there are places that are more expensive that have super crazy rolls with weird sauces (read: masu)... but this is the best all-around place for us. The rolls are always fresh and always delicious. They allow for substitutions, which is great for me because I don't do spicy tuna. It's worth the money, every last cent- and you always see regulars in there, (like us) who can't stay away because it's just too good. Our favorite rolls include the Kamikaze, the Yummy Yummy and the GOG roll (hello, strawberries!). Go to Bluefin. Go now, and then go tomorrow because you'll be dreaming of their sushi tonight.

My Monkey Roll did not come with actual monkey in it. I am somewhat disappointed because The Cat could sure use a friend. But I was not let down by the deliciousness. Deep-fried asparagus should just be added onto everything, you know? You have a functional but lackluster sandwich? Deep-fried asparagus that sammy! An awkward email from a long-ago acquaintance that you're unsure how to answer? Express your ambivalence with deep-fried 'gus! The Monkey Roll at Bluefin also comes with tuna and inari. For that matter, all the names are misleading. The Hawaiian roll contained a little mango, tuna, and tobiko, but not a single Hawaiian person. I'm pretty sure mangos are originally from India. Tasty nonetheless. I won't even go into my expectations of anything labeled Dragon. I heeded the warnings about the edamame from the smartypants here. As a result, we ordered more rolls than we have rolls in our tummies, and leftover sushi is the best decadent afternoon snack besides scotch. The server nearly forgot the spicy tuna maki I ordered, but once the slight was mentioned, tuna appeared like mermaid magic at our table about a minute afterward. I think if I ever open a sushi restaurant, all the sushi creations get girly non-sequiturs for names. Mermaid Roll. Pony Roll. Unicorn Jumping Over the Rainbow Roll. Wait, there is such a thing as a Rainbow Roll. I'll need to research this idea further.

I like this place a lot. The fish was extremely fresh, more so than I'm used to (read sushiland, sushi Hana). The rolls were perfectly sized. Well balanced and uniquely flavorful from each other. There's lemon in the water and the tables feel clean. My only gripe is the waiter that afternoon was a little slow to understand English and asked for our orders before realizing we had not received the menus since we walked in. I like the promptness to get our orders in, makes customer service is fast.

bluefin is great if you like sashimi or nigiri. fresh, appropriate portions, at a good price, with good service. it's hard to ask for more. the only other comment i feel necessary to share is that their rolls are not always consistent. the spice can vary, as well as the preparation of the fish. it's always worth the buck, though, and variety is the spice of life anyway. if you end up with a regular habit like me, ask to start a stamp card.

This is the sushi joint of choice for my partner and I. In a neighborhood with Hama and Mio within blocks, we'll head to Bluefin for fresher and tastier options. Try the super-white for a delicious and delicate nigiri that I haven't found elsewhere. Creamy scallops are also delicious and not as mayo-e as Mio. Can't comment on the rest of the menu as mentioned in the other reviews as we usually just stick to what we know. Also, they have a frequent flier punch card that saves you a few bucks if you are a repeat customer.

its very hard to decide if i should give this joint 4 stars or 3. but ive come to a decision, i gave it 3 stars only because my Udon noodle soup was quite vinagery. not so good if you ask me! the seaweed salad was also kinda gross. but i did like...... -their great hawaiin roll -the flatscreen tv -the great service -it seemed to be family run -the great atmosphere i think i'll leave it at that!

Wow, this is my favorite sushi bar in Portland so far. It's small, not too big, with a clean modern sushi bar design with blonde wood and stainless steel. It reminds me of Happy Fish back where I'm from. The music is your standard Japanese Musak and the room tempreture is just right, not too hot, not too cold. The best reason to come here though, is the sushi. It's really good and CHEAP. You can get a Tuna, Cucumber or Avacodo tekka style roll for just $2 A PIECE!!! That's right . . . just $2!!! All their Makisushi except for one roll do not go over $4.50. Then they have your standard special rolls for $8 tp $10. The Nigiri is good too not going over $3.50 for a pair (Toro is $8) and boy is is friggin' delicious. So stop thinking and go over there RIGHT NOW. You won't regret it :)

Been there 2 times, and GREAT both times! I keep getting the Denver roll, and Samurai roll... both are FANTASTIC! I have also gotten the Teriyaki chicken plate.. great too! There is so much good sushi here to choose from it's almost impossible to decide so I get it all and stuff myself silly! Usually go in with a group of people so we get to sit upstairs in the room for groups. It's very fun for parties and social gatherings! Everyone always looks very happy downstairs as well. The service is good, ladies there are very friendly. Prices aren't too bad, but my boyfriend keeps getting huge Sapporo's to drink so our bill is always crazy.

Been here three times. Not impressed. The fish really hasn't been On any time I've been there so far. It's in our Hollywood run on the train, but I"m taking it off. Three times is enough.

The thing is the food was not all that bad. It was not great, but acceptable. The dinner bento, in fact, was a tremendous amount of food. The atmosphere is OK too. I like that it's so small. It was the service that was absolutely appalling. It's nearly incomprehensible. If they can't do something in the kitchen, tell me. Don't tell me, "Yes, no problem," then not do it. I had requested no teriyaki sauce first and foremost. Then I asked if I could swap the salmon for saba. The bento boxes did not have mackerel, and I was feeling like having some. She checked with the kitchen and said it was OK. Mackerel is cheaper than salmon, so I figured that it would not be a problem. Next I asked for no shrimp. Not a problem according to the server. Again, almost anything in tempura is cheaper than shrimp. My bento arrived with salmon dripping with teriyaki sauce, and four shrimp tempura. They replaced the sugar salmon with simple grilled salmon, then I passed the shrimp off to my date. Next came paying. Again, nearly incomprehensible. My date asked to have $15 put on his card, and I put down cash plus 15% tip. Instead, the server took the cash I put down and put the balance on the credit card. At least this allowed us to adjust the tip downward. Some of the food problems could have been with the kitchen. This debacle of something very standard was clearly her problem. She got a slim 10%. They kept asking us if everything was OK, but I don't like to raise a big stink when I'm on a date. I have to wonder if the server had never eaten in a restaurant, if she had not point of comparison to know how things are supposed to work. I will not go back if I have the choice.

The sushi here is pretty medium: not bad, but not delicious either. I did like the Monkey Roll, but the sashimi seemed not-so-fresh. The service was nice, but everything for our table came at once. I observed other tables where two customers would get their entrees, then 10 minutes later the third came out. The price was good, but I'd rather spend a little more and get better fish.

I have to be honest, I was sorely disappointed leaving Bluefin. Let me first establish that I could eat sushi all day, every day, and not get tired of it. So when I walked into Bluefin, absolutely famished, I was ready to gorge myself on miso, edamame, and delectable morsels of rice and fish. The miso was good, but I'm not sure it is possible to screw up soybean paste and water. The salad was reminiscent of the bagged salads in the grocery produce section, which also resemble the same salads in the buffet line at Pizza Hut. It was doused in a creamy peanut-like dressing that was not pleasant. It covered the taste of the stale iceberg lettuce though, so I can't complain. The edamame was very soft, dare I say mushy, and lacked any flavor. This was devastating to someone who devours edamame like it's going out of style. When the sushi arrived, Bluefin semi-redeemed itself. The nigiri was fantastic. The texture was absolutely perfect and the taste fresh and light. The tuna rolls left something to be desired, so I chose to focus on what was some of the best nigiri I've had in Portland to date. Would I go back? Probably. But I'll be ordering the nigiri, hold half the rice, the tuna roll, the edamame, and the salad.

The waitstaff were fine and the chef was friendly, but the quality of the sushi was very poor. I don't douse my sushi in soy sauce or wasabi so the quality of the fish really matters to me. I have no plans to return, especially with a much better sushi place only a block away.

after a workout at the 24 hollywood i was craving some sushi. Mios ok but i wanted to try something new and found this in the area. My impressions on it are that its reasonably priced good quality and the service was very good. What more could you ask for?

We love Bluefin! The staff is so friendly and helpful and the sushi is amazing. So fresh, great portions and everything tastes amazing. The Denver roll is a must have! We have tried a lot of different sushi places and although it is small and could mean a bit of a wait, it is definitely worth the extra time.

I am so sad that this place is not better! I ordered salmon bento and an ebi roll. I'm not going to eat on my server, because she is the least of the issues. This is my experience, in case it is useful. Strawberry lemonade garnished with a dried and gross looking berry. Beverage made with grenadine and lemony water as glass was completely transparent. Ego roll was ok but tasted odd. It should have tasted savory and good, but somehow tasted off. Bento came with teriyaki salmon that was the tiniest sliver of salmon, but was very delicious and grilled to a perfect point. Dad then that the teriyaki sauce just tasted brown. It didn't taste sweet or salty, just nothingness. What? Tempura was ok, but sauce tasted of nothingness. It didn't taste good at all. Not salty, just nothing. I was concerned that the teriyaki shrimp were not completely cooked. Salad looked good but the dressing wasn't very good. (meh salad dressing you can absolutely forgive at a sushi restaurant though.) California rolls were ok, but somehow did not taste actually GOOD. Overall everything (even the miso) tasted like the inside of plastic Tupperware. I think it's either a good storage issue with the fridge or just that there is no quality control from day to day. I am so sorry to even write this, but I kind of want to warn people as I'm irritated at spending 3.50 in a strawberry lemonade that was essentially a Shirley temple.

Bluefin Sushi is a little neighborhood joint that offers a homey atmosphere, the friendliest of staff, and enjoyable, reasonably-priced sushi plus, of course, other Japanese cuisine--not to mention a few nice bottles of Rogue beer not readily found around town. If you want a more swish sushi experience (and beyond), definitely check out Pono Farm Soul Kitchen nearby. If you do not want warm and chatty service, perhaps visit the more rote Mio Sushi outpost nearby. And if you have a party larger than 4-5, you'll probably want to consider somewhere with more square footage because Bluefin is limited to a small downstairs area and even smaller upstairs (plus a small patio during warmer, drier weather). But, if you're alright with your server being genuinely conversational; if you simply want a relaxing, good (but not necessarily great) meal with a refreshing sake or beer; and if you appreciate, for example, the small touch of offering a frequent-diner stamp card without it coming off as tacky, well, Bluefin Sushi could be the place for you.

    (4)
  • Michael F.

Real Conversation- Waiter: would you like a frequent diner card? Me: Sure. I didn't know you had one. Waiter: Really? You haven't been offered one before? Who helped you? Me: You did. The last three times. Waiter: No, really who helped you? Me: You did. Waiter laughs and gives me the card. Aside from that amusing note this place is ok as the other reviews suggest.

First off, the chefs and all the staff are great! They take care of us every time and the quality of the sushi is great for your price. I'm a regular here, I usually order the hand rolls and they are to die for and they are generous on portions which is a plus. People look past conveyor belt sushi restaurants but this one is delicious! S/o to Grace the sushi chef for always making the best California handroll!

A nice sushi place near the Hollywood Theater, this made for a great before-the-movie spot. We arrived fairly soon after opening on a Wednesday and we were the only couple in there the whole time. The aquarium was a nice touch, as were the sand and seashells in the bottom of the screen dividers between tables. It was fun to pick them up, maybe not the most germ-free thing to do, but...there you go. The waitress was attentive, the sushi arrived quickly. It was good. Mostly just good, solid sushi, nothing to rave over, but the salmon was delicious. My dinner date got the I love Salmon roll and it was really, really delicious. I often get the mackerel, which I know is not perhaps a most-loved piece of nigiri, but how this is handled often factors into my sushi reviews. Theirs was....ok. A little mushy, not as firm as I would like. But the California roll was solid, the miso yummy, and the service fast and helpful. But that wouldn't be difficult when there's only one table with customers the whole time. Still, it was a mellow, nice start to the evening, and the location is great, around the corner and you are at Trader Joe's to pick up some movie snacks. ;)

I was so incredibly disappointed and let down by this place. Rather than rant, I'm just going to list it out for you...now that I think of it, the list is just a rant with numbers. (by the way, we were the only people in the restaurant when we were there) 1. Horrible, awful service! --- The waitress came to drop off menus and never bothered to take a drink order. Every single time I needed something, I had to signal her to come over and that was only when I could get her attention off of the tv. We were really nice and even said that this was our first time visiting, and yet we were ignored almost completely...and the owner was right there, too! 2. Stingy on the portions inside the rolls...but the price was still high! --- I got so much rice on my rolls and so little filling, I almost wanted to send everything back. How a place can get away with being so stingy is beyond me. The amount of crab in some of my rolls was just laughable it was so tiny. 3. Tea bags! WTF? ---- Look, even if you are going to served me bagged green tea (which I have never been served in a sushi or Japanese restaurant), brew it in the back and pour me a cup of tea and I wouldn't be any wiser. Instead I get to see the cheap ass label on the no-name brand of crappy tea you served me. 4. Taste was "meh." ---- If you are going to charge those prices for your rolls then you shouldn't be stingy with the ingredients, because ingredients contribute to flavor and if you don't have a lot of ingredients, you don't have a lot of flavor and you cannot cover that up with dousing of eel sauce. I'm sorry to say it, but I will never go back here.

The staff is very friendly, and they have always accommodated our work groups of 4-6 people. The restaurant is a small space, but we have never had issues fitting comfortable with a medium size group. I like their creative sushi rolls!

Mediocre, acceptable, you will live, not terrible and unfortunately overpriced are all acceptable comments from other reviewers. When we arrived there were no people sitting in the restaurant. The chef and waitress both know English and were overly attentive. Hii, welcome, you could sit anywhere, Ooooo thats a good place, yes you could put your gym bags in the corner. Let me tell you about the menu; This is veeerrrry good and.... Geez, Mary, mother of .... allow me to read the menu! Ivan and I ordered edamame to start while still reviewing the menu. It was salted well and warm. I ordered one of the specials - Monk fish liver - it was delicious. Ivan ordered a roll and I ordered the Tuna Festival roll. I took photos. It was average at best. The tuna festival comes with a cut tuna roll which is mostly rice and with four average size nigiri pieces; one of the three was very good, the rest were thawed out and placed over glutinous rice. The sliced ginger is not dyed pink so I'm grateful. if you are just hungry, not very discriminating and would still like to eat here, then I recommend ordering the daily specials only. Also, the chef at the bar was talking with us in English and the waitress was adding to his opinions. Ivan and I were hoping they would just give us time to read the menu and relax. I think they got the idea when they started speaking Chinese with each other in front of us. Very comical . Do not have the hot tea! this is just a teabag with water. Normally, good sushi restaurants serve whole leaf or some sort of delicious aromatic hot tea. Not here ! I explained I did not like it and the waitress said " sorry" twice and charged me for it. Hahahaha The Pearl area on 10th has magnificent sushi restaurants that are pricy because the quality of the fish deserves it. Not this place.

I see films at Hollywood Theater a lot and was really hoping to find a better food option. I see I am still searching. I wanted so badly to like this place due to the location, it being sushi and also they offer a punch card! The place was fairly full but this is a small place - like 6-7 tables total and each of those were just couples - no one was at the bar. There is one server but still - everything just seemed to take a really long time. The lady waiting on us brought my friend's bento box way ahead of my sushi so he sat there polity not eating when after ten minutes she brings another bento to us asking if he had already started eating and he said no - she then said she had his and made a mistake - took the one from him and gave it to a table near us who was waiting for theirs.... So basically we sat on someone else's food for a bunch of time - hopefully they like cold soggy tempura. The water we were served looked cloudy and it was cucumber water but it also tasted a bit...odd like they were covering up nasty water with the cucumber or something. I ordered two rolls to give those a try. The rolls were very tasty - Seacrush and Crunchy Tempura Roll. For the Seacrush I was in sock as to how tiny the pieces of yellowtail were cut...it was actually pretty ridiculous - especially with how expensive ($16.95...y'ouch!) this roll is...seriously, give me an actual piece of fish. Honestly the prices seemed pretty high especially for this part of town and this not looking like a fancy place to eat. I was glad I did not order nigiri or sashimi since those were pretty expensive and if cut small...downright ridiculous. So the two stars is for the actual food itself which, honestly, I would love to give higher points to because even with the tiny pieces of yellowtail I did loooove the rolls I got - the Seacrush has freaking seaweed on it with tiny red row and sesame seeds. It was amazing! I love places which get creative with their rolls and they do have some unique combos that sound very tasty - it was hard to just pick two to try but even with two I had way too much - the portions for the rolls is very good I will say which is probably why they are pricey although they really really skimp on the fish portion of the rolls.

100% acceptable. No more, no less. Their sushi box menu is very confusing. Asking for an explanation didn't help. Their aquarium needs a cleaning, which is usually a sign of a great Asian establishment. This was not great. So much for that general rule. I was really hoping to have a great sushi place in my new neighborhood, but Bluefin is not it.

I love this place, I have been coming here for years. This is a great and reasonably priced sushi place. Kim, the owner, is a fantastic host and very friendly service is great and attentive, even when busy. They have very good fresh fish, ask about the specials because they usually have a delicious tuna or salmon special that is worth it. The fish is fresh and their rolls are very reasonably priced for the amount of fresh fish received. I love the Denver Nugget Roll and during the summer season the Hawaiian Roll is fabulous (it has mango, so make sure mango is in season).

Great food! Must try the Denver Nugget roll. Pot stickers and fried calamari salad are great appetizers. Teriyaki salmon is also great; nice presentation and very flavorful. Service was so/so but definitely worth a try!

I love this place. I stop in semi regularly for lunch. My favorite is their Chicken Katsu bento box for $8.95. When my appetite is lighter or I'm feeling like sushi they have a good sized sushi lunch special for $9.95 - the best part about the sushi lunch is you choose your fish!

I enjoyed this place, it seemed like it was going to be dive-y from the outside, but inside it's just a cute tiny little sushi place. Seating is limited to a few tables (inside), and there is some patio seating outside (but it was winter so, inside it was), and some spots at the bar. Our order arrived SO quickly, that I initially thought maybe it was someone else's. We did mention that we were super hungry and in a hurry - and apparently that meant all of our food to be delivered at once (edamame, miso, and sushi). No complaints there really - just was shocked how quickly it came out. Maybe the chef heard us ordering and was already preparing?

Came across this place by accident. Actually had the intention of going to another sushi place near by but it was closed so ended up here. Was actually a good thing...because really enjoyed my experience there. The food was really good. The sushi was fresh and tasted great. We tried a wide variety of sushi and no complaints. Also had the chicken katsu...super yummy! We had very good service. The waitress was fast and made sure we were taken care of. Will be back for sure.

Extremely over-priced for mediocre food at best. You can find much better quality for less nearby. Soggy reheated chicken with teriyaki sauce dripped over it. Spotted iceberg lettuce with an Italian salad dressing that they were kind enough to sprinkle sesame seeds over. Rice! Lots of rice! Piles of rice! Fill up on rice! Out of the fifteen dollars you'll spend on the lunch special, $2 will go to the non-rice items. I ended up gnawing my chopstick into a small spear in a futile effort to snag myself a decorative angel fish out of the algae-fogged tank. The only reason I think you might enjoy this place is that it's your first sushi experience, and it's in a decent little corner of the Hollywood district.

I wasn't blown away by this place. Walked into a pretty slow and empty restaurant and was only offered bar seating. Didn't realize until overhearing all the outdoor seating offers to everyone else who entered after us that this place had a patio (too bad it was a freaking amazingly beautiful day outside--thanks, guys). All I ever want, wish for and hope to find when visiting a new sushi restaurant is for there to be options of specialty rolls that don't contain shrimp or crab (yuck, fresh fish only please). Bluefin offered two, and I got them both. The cherry blossom was awesome, wish I had ordered two...but I also wish there were a little more options. The prices were alright, the fish was decent. Not entirely sure if I will ever return, but if I do--note to self: Cherry blossom.

I am highly disappointed with the previous reviews. I have to remind myself that, for me, it's about the food and for others, they need "extras" to enhance their experience. If you read their reviews, you will note that they Love the food. If you need a show - try that rainforest restaurant. I moved back to town and was seriously jonesing for some good sushi. Good sushi has been comfort food to me for years (well, ever since I had been threatened with in an inch of my life to try it). My place was a mess and dishes were somewhere in the boxes. Bluefin was close by and being that I had just traveled over 300 miles to come back to my home town, I thought this little restaurant was adventure enough for the day. I was hesitant, but hungry enough and devoid of eating utensils to propel me outside of my mess. My adventurous spirit was rewarded with excellent sushi. Blue Fin has delicious sushi. I have eaten sushi up and down the west coast; From Bellingham, WA to Kauai, HI. From expert sushi chefs to 3rd generation sushi chefs. Bluefin is right there at the top . I have a sensitive palate. They didn't disappoint. When dealing with raw items, you must use the best in order to achieve success. Bluefin succeeds. The fish is ALWAYS fresh! They have excellent standard sushi and wonderful combination rolls. Their combination rolls are inventive. Better than that - the sushi chefs are not so arrogant as to deny requests for additions or subtractions. I'm not a huge California roll eater - but theirs is wonderful. On occasion I add tuna. It's never a problem! Customer service is always the utmost concern. They will accommodate your needs to the best of their abilities. The atmosphere is small, but inviting. Simple and clean. The focus is the sushi. They have local wines and various saki (of which I am not a fan) available. It is not elegant or "fine" dining. But iff good food is your focus - this is the place. You do not have to Love sushi in order to eat here. Important to me, due to the fact that not all my friends can (yet) stomach the idea of raw fish as an edible meal. If you want a sushi meal with friends who are not fans of "bait", this is the place. They have excellent Teriyaki chicken (tender & seemingly marinated for days) and other offerings. Easy for all eaters - even kiddos. They also have a good fried veggies plate and fried shrimp in one roll for those who require high cholesterol content as a prerequisite for meals. They are child friendly and on a glorious day - the outdoor seating is Lovely. The service is friendly and respectful. Parking is on the street - but not a problem if you can walk a block. A few steps if you are lucky. If you are looking for a quick meal - this is not the place. If they tell you 20 minutes - double it. Just an FYI. Don't come here for quality salad - it's not top on their priority list. As for the price - do you really squawk about price for excellent sushi. The fresher the fish - the less chance of food poisoning. If you are looking for a bargain - Fred Meyer and Costco do sushi plates. The prices are decent and not outrageous for quality sushi. The portions are liberal - one roll will suffice for a moderate eater. I thoroughly enjoy this little place. Don't hesitate to try it. If price is an issue for you - look at the menu first. Enjoy!

I really want to like Bluefin more but it's just not as amazing as I'd like. The sushi is excellent, but expensive, the service is iffy but they are really sweet so I forgive it. The Decor is beautiful! I do like that they are accommodating with substitutions, since the roll I love the most (Rock n Roll) comes with avacado, cucumber, shrimp tempura in the wrap and spicy tuna on the outside and the great mix of sauces on top they allow me to have tuna on the inside too! So while I don't like paying that much for sushi that's god but not OMG amazing, I will when i get that craving and for special occasions.

Best sushi in Portland. The "I love salmon", the "denver nugget", the spicy sauce on everything! Nice, quite, environment with a quaint out door patio. The staff are always polite and helpful and the food is very reasonably priced.

YUMMY!!! Rode the max and walked the few blocks to get here. Easy in and out! Denver nugget and cherry blossom rolls were fantastic! But wow the tuna sampler with spicy tuna roll and 4 different types of tuna nigiri were so devine! This was a great way to get our sushi fix!! YUM. If you go with a grou, call to reserve the tatami room upstairs, it looked like so much fun.

This place is awesome. Went here last night with a friend. We got there at 9:15 (they close at 10) & they welcomed us whole heartedly. They even sat another table about 20 min after us. Every time we saw our server, which was often but not too often, she kept repeating that there was no rush, take our time. The only thing she asked (and she apologized in advance- totally MY move) was whether we would be paying cash or charge so that they could close out the credit card machine if possible. Totally adorable. The menu itself looked a little pricey, but when I got to the ordering menu (the paper, fill this out like keno type) everything was surprisingly affordable. Most rolls were $4.50 & that gets you 8 pieces of sushi! Some ranged on up to $6 or $7, depending on ingredient, and of course there were more expensive nigiri & specialty rolls as well. I ordered the Hawaiian roll & the spicy tuna... both were totally delicious & there was way too much food. Friend ordered two California rolls (boring I know, but friend is allergic to shellfish and I'm not dealing with a Hitch-like situation on a Monday night) which were proclaimed to be perfect. The Hawaiian roll has salmon, tuna, mango & avocado- quite possibly the second most perfect roll ever, surpassed only by my beloved asparagus rolls which I neglected to find on the menu (my only boo). By the time we were ready to leave we still had 10 pieces of left over sushi & we got out of there for $18. On top of the great food & service, they're having a raffle for $25 gas cards which we both entered. The server (who might be one of the owners) decided that I looked familiar & came out to give me her business card & asked for one of mine in return... too freakin cute. I can't wait to go back, and since they open at 11am Monday-Saturday (open 4:30-9pm on Sundays) I can totally run in there for a quick lunch under $5 over and over... and over again. I'm so stoked that I was introduced to this place, they just might have a regular.

Nigiri heaven. Every slab of raw fish we tried was outstanding, especially the albacore (which I don't usually like). The rolls were original and magnificent. I barely touched my soy sauce -- nothing needed it. I can't speak to the quality of anything else on the menu, but if you like sushi, you have got to come here and try the nigiri and the rolls.

Still, it was a mellow, nice start to the evening, and the location is great, around the corner and you are at Trader Joe's to pick up some movie snacks. ;)

I was so incredibly disappointed and let down by this place. Rather than rant, I'm just going to list it out for you...now that I think of it, the list is just a rant with numbers.

Enjoy!

So while I don't like paying that much for sushi that's god but not OMG amazing, I will when i get that craving and for special occasions.

bluefin is great if you like sashimi or nigiri. fresh, appropriate portions, at a good price, with good service. it's hard to ask for more. the only other comment i feel necessary to share is that their rolls are not always consistent. the spice can vary, as well as the preparation of the fish. it's always worth the buck, though, and variety is the spice of life anyway. if you end up with a regular habit like me, ask to start a stamp card.

Great sushi. But you pay for it. A lunch menu would be great.
