This hole in the wall Vietnamese sandwich place is top on my list for Banh Mi. I'm Vietnamese living in Seattle and I've yet to find any place in the Greater Seattle area that has better Banh Mi. So whenever we visit relatives in Portland, we always bring back at least 2 dozens of assorted varieties to eat during the week. Reasons why this place is best: - Most important: they bake their own baguettes. I can't find these anywhere else. Fluffy but not dry, with a light crunch on the crust, with a wisp of buttery fragrant, these are sexy slender babies. You can also buy just the baguettes (5 per bags) from here, take them home and make your own Banh Mi if you prefer. We do that. I can't find a replacement for their baguettes from any other bakeries in the region, If you know of some place in the greater Seattle area that makes as good baguettes, please please let me know. - each banh mi individually comes in its own paper pouch, very clean and convenient to contain the crumbs or anything that might fall out. I have yet to find a 2nd Vietnamese sandwich place that does this. A considerate touch. - cheap, consider the 2 points above - their Banh Mi are not huge or piled up like some would prefer, but that's the whole point: these are meant to be for the road, and I also loath the American way of heaping things into a sandwich to the point where things keep falling or oozzing out with each bite. Very messy don't you think? Bonus: they make great pork pate chaud. These are small but again are more flavorful and cheaper than other Vietnamese deli's that offer similar fare. Updated: if you agree with me that an authentic Banh Mi must have these 3 essential ingredients: pate, traditional mayonnaise (vegetable oil and egg yolk), and soy sauce, then this place doesn't have it, or any other place for that matter. Updated: bumped it down 1 star, as I now have tasted better banh mi at Best Baguette, which also bake their own baguette.

Such good sandwiches. Take the precaution and order two . Heck, they're $2.50 a pop. The bread is so good I keep meaning to order more for dinner.

Good vegetarian banh mi, nice spice, excellent bread. I kinda wish the veggie had faux ham slices as I have seen in other shops instead of shredded bean curd, but will return for sure.

seriously? $2.50 a sandwich? learned about this spot from the vietnamese moms at my workplace. HEY, if they dig it, i can dig it. but beware of the peppers they put in the sandwiches. i thought i could handle it, but after a few too many seeds, i had my eyes watering and my mind panicking for a way out. (plain ol' screaming in pain? or should i just stick to suicide? hmm...) good thing they also have canned thai iced tea here...

The best sandiwches I've ever had.

The banh mi here is de-licious! I always get the nem nuong because that is my favorite banh mi. The bread is crunchy and tastes pretty fresh. They are generous with the stuffing. The service has always been good. It looks like a regular small Vietnamese restaurant. Not that clean but clean enough for me!

Meat pastries and egg roles are one of the best deals in town. Smoothies take a long time to make. Place can be tricky to find if you're not familiar with the area.

My husband and I love eating here. Their banh mi is only $2.75 so they are a very good value. They are one of the best tasting banh mi places that I know of. The place only has 2 small tables (most people come in and get everything to go). They are so quick with making the sandwiches and I have never had a bad experience here. This is a great hole-in-the wall place to eat.

  • Bullwinkle J.

I believe the current prices are $2.75 for a sandwich and $1 for extra meat. That's $3.75 for a damn fine Vietnamese sandwich. Yeah, it's tucked in next to a shady ass bar and jewelry store which looks like it's actually a prison but that's a part of the awesome. I'm pretty sure the bar, bakery, jewelry store, and Vietnamese restaurant are all owned by the same people who own Pacific Supermarket, the grocery store which sits in the middle of the complex. Nonetheless, the sandwiches are delicious and super cheap. An easy five-star review. NOTE: This is not really a sit down place. You can, technically, eat at the table inside the bakery but I would advise walking a block north and a couple blocks west and eating in the park.

Delicious banh mi sandwiches. I believe the bread is baked fresh daily and you can tell. The pickled carrots are fresh and crunchy, and the Jalapeno adds a perfect amount of booya to your sandwich. Not necessarily the best service. In fact the first time I ever stumbled into Binh Minh I felt like I was getting viciously accosted whilst trying to order my sandwiches, but I was hooked on the taste and each time I go back the service seems to get friendlier. The sandwiches are somewhat small, but filling and only 2.50 to 3.00 each, so even if you eat (2) its still a bargain. As Eazy-E said, its a cash only business.

I miss your sandwiches! Open a shop in SF! :) All the banh mi shops in the Bay are mediocre, 3.5 stars at the most.

  • L. D.

The food is 4 stars and the service is 3 stars, 3.5 stars total. This bakery is more of a take out place versus being a sit down bakery. It is a hole in the wall and you would not even know its a bakery from the outside. It's been a secret to the banh mi connoisseur. After being in Iowa and eating a banh mi on a hoagie roll (sacrilegious!), it was nice to return to PDX and have a good banh mi in my childhood neighborhood. We have been going to this bakery since it first opened, about 15 years ago or more? It's been so long I can't even remember. Initially this bakery catered to the Vietnamese and SE Asian population. But now it is more mainstream with the popularity of Vietnamese food, especially the banh mi which appears to have evolved into one of the hipster foods. If you are a banh mi connoisseur like myself, you can be blind folded and know exactly which sandwich came from which bakery. The banh mi bread at this bakery is more glutinous, smaller, less flaky and more chewy as compared to Best Baguette. I also don't taste the Vietnamese mayonnaise when I bite into the original banh mi sandwich. Also, I can't taste the sour, salty and sweet flavor of the marinated daikon radish and carrots. In the old days, they use to include cucumbers sliced the long way but unfortunately this is not done anymore. If you are used to a banh mi from Best Baguette that includes lots of meat and marinated veggies, then you will be disappointed at this little bakery. Don't get me wrong, it is a good sandwich. I have my biases. On the upside, they have what I think is the best and freshest pate chard for $0.89. Their Vietnamese pastries are also very good. The banh mi are made to order and you will not find any in cases. You have to order the sandwich. If they are busy, you will have to wait. It is a family bakery and there are not alot of staff so please be patient. We are close and frequent flyers to this bakery. Our daughter loves the rice cakes which always taste fresh unlike some places. Word of advice: Do no get a banh mi sandwich at Pacific Market which is the Asian store close to this bakery. It is not made to order and usually not fresh.

I've been going to Binh Minh Sandwiches since I was a little kid (maybe almost 15 years ago). In my opinion this place is by far the BEST place in Oregon for Vietnamese sandwiches. Actually, I enjoy the sandwiches here more than the ones I had in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam during my last vacation there. Sandwiches are only $2.50 each and they sell many other delicious baked savory goodies. The place is kind of in a odd location and looks rundown. Expect to get your order to-go, there's no seating. Service is meh, but it depends on who you run into.

  • Kim I.

I had no idea the original Binh Minh was back here, but when I got taken to it, it was a treat. A tiny little hole in the wall, but it was delicious. We got the BBQ pork and Meatball Banh Mi's and they were delicious. We also got the Patè Chaud's (Meatballs covered with delicious flaky pastry) and those were all divine. Their iced coffee was yummy and all of the little snacks that they sell in front to go are also all good. Authentic, quick and yummy. I will go here whenever I'm on that side of town to grab food to go! I'm so glad that I now know where this location is. No need for a fancy place when you have inexpensive delicious foods. Way to go Binh Minh!

Great sandwiches. I haven't been out to the places around Foster/Powell so I can't really compare. But these are incredibly inexpensive and delicious. I had a #1 and #2, with extra peppers; $5.50 for both. Nice balance of umami, slightly sour, crunchy, and a burst of cilantro. $3 for a bag of 5 breads, which would be great for brats, grinders, meatball subs or whatever. This is in an unsuspecting seeming spot by a lot of residential. (Right near Juvie too!) But right here is a row of Asian things: a funny bar ("happy spot" i think?), a jeweler, a huge market, and another restaurant that always seems empty. Cool spot. p.s. It's pretty fucking standard for bakeries to be closed on Monday.

This was the worst sandwich I have ever tastes. Two bites into the pork bahn mi and I was done. My husband had the chicken bahn mi and had the same reaction. WE WILL NOT BE BACK.

My absolute favorite bánh mì place. Great price and selection. People are all butt hurt about the amount of meat, well pay the extra 50 cents for the extra meat. Your total is still under $4 and the sandwich still ends up a better value than other places AND it tastes FAR more superior! That bread... *drools* Do yourself a favor and go get some. Cash preferred under... $10?

  • Brian H.

The exterior and interior might be intimidating for some people, but if you could look past that part, your all good. The Binh Minh sandwiches are prices so low($2.50 - $3.00) that you could leave full just spending $5. This bakery offers 8 Binh Minh sandwiches to choose from. I ate the shredded pork Binh Minh and It was pretty darn tasty. The shredded pork had a nice taste to it. The bread was nice and flaky. They also provide steam buns for $1.50. The bakery is small and doesn't offer any pastries. If your near by and craving a cheap Binh Minh sandwich, this place is worth checking out.

This is my favorite Vietnamese sandwich bakery. Though it's a whole in the wall I find it much better than all the other Vietnamese shows in Portland. I find it to be healthier than most sine they don't add a bunch of lard to it like Lee's sandwiches does. Oh the pastries with the meat inside (banh ba ti so) are delicious also.

Best bahn mi I've ever had. I haven't had a ton, but these are made fresh with great ingredients.

I just had a sandwichgasm. Or maybe a sando-rgasm. You decide. This place is a dive. No other way to describe it. That is not a bad thing. I was on the hunt for Banh Mi. I've been to An Xuyen and I really love An Xuyen. An Xuyen is like the Waldorf Astoria. Binh Minh is like a Howard Johnson's. I had the #1 (house special) and the #5 (bbq pork which I haven't eaten yet). The bread is all made in house. I get mine without mayo. Mayo is evil (cue Darth Vader theme). I think Dick Cheney likes mayo. Enough said about that. I took my food to a nearby park. I ate the #1 at the nearby park. The bread was nice and crisp and the mixed meats and egg were all warm and moist and the carrots and cilantro and chili peppers just worked so well together that I'm going to start to drool all over my keyboard. They lose a star because they aren't close to where I live. I had never been out here before, but now I know where all the Asians are in Portland. Good stuff. I'll be back.

GREAT hole in the wall place. Banh mi's are delicious, bread is soft (not rock hard - yay!) and their 2 soups are also great. Only 8 chairs at their tables, so if it's full you have to take your food to-go.

I don't live terribly far from this joint, and being a lover of the revered Banh Mi, I took the first opportunity to hunt this place down. Tucked away into a series of buildings, this Pâté-palace is seriously tiny stuff -- I was packed in with another white lady and several Viet customers. Bonus points for the fact that I couldn't understand the counter lady the first time around... that's means this is authentic! But, unlike other reviewers who hyped the bread, I thought it was too dry, and the toppings (mmm. pork.) didn't make up for it. Happy to have added this to my list, but I think I'll have to make the pilgrimage to Southeast and try Best Baguette...

  • Jack P.

They have the best tofu banh mi I've ever had. The tofu was like a dry shredded tofu tossed in some sort of semi-sweet sauce that looked like it had sesame seeds. Whatever it was, it was really tasty. Their fish banh mi was good also, but like any sardine sandwich, it's more of an acquired taste. The bread was light and airy with a thin crust that shattered easily and for $2.50-$3.00 a sandwich it's really hard to go wrong here. Good sandwich at a great price. This may be my go-to banh mi place in town now.

  • Jenn A.

The bread was fresh and the sandwich was tasty, but very skimpy on fillings. Still a good deal, but I have fond memories of Cali Sandwiches on Glisan. Since they closed, I haven't found any place that comes close. I was hoping this place would be better. The service was mediocre. It was hectic while I visited, which didn't help. I will try them again in the future in case I visited on an off day. The food wasn't bad by any means, but did not live up to my expectations. I'm going to try some of the bakery goods next time, too, because they looked quite tasty. They accept credit cards now with a $10 minimum.

For a city with so many other (better) bin Minh sandwich shops, how this place is in business I have no idea... To start with the store front of this place looked like a fancy jail cell and the inside was not much better.. I felt bad for the toddler that was being kept behind the counter. We still decided to order despite first impression, and got the bbq pork and shredded pork. When we received our sandwiches (which were put in a microwave to warm them up... I would have preferred them cold) the bbq pork was okay, nothing exciting and there was an unidentifiable chewy substance in place of the pork in the shredded pork sandwich. I think I would rather drive the farther distance to An Xuyen than ever go back.

Only been here once. It's kind of hard to find because I wasn't sure what side of the freeway it was on (the south side). Once I found it, it was like a weird Asian beacon shining in the late afternoon. It's right next door to an awesome, but stinky, Asian grocery. Onto the sammies... The bread is the best I've had. Hot out of the oven, and a perfect crispy crust and soft interior. I got shredded pork, and I don't think I would choose that again. The meat was like julienned or something, and there were these really chewy stringy bits that might or might not have been fat. There could have been a little more mayo and veggies on it, as the whole thing was kind of dry. They're about 6" and 2-3 bucks. My favorite is still Best Baguette, but I think I'll have to come back here and try something else, because if I choose wisely I might find the perfect banh mi here.

Delicious sandwiches!!! I've had the BBQ pork, shredded pork and the grilled chicken (my favorite). The bread is always perfectly warm and soft with a nice, crisp top. The veggies are crisp and fresh tasting and they always ask you before adding the jalapenos. Perfect meat / veg / bread / mayo ratio. All for $2.50! They also sell pork buns and sweets but i haven't tried anything other than the fine sandwiches. I always order to go and there hasn't been a long wait yet. Not a super appealing interior but it is clean and acceptable. I always take it to go.

You know it's a freaking delicious sandwich when it makes the roof of your mouth hurt oh-so-good. I forget who introduced me to bahn mi, but my god, remind me to give them a big ole kiss the next time we run into each other, okay? Oh so spicy, oh so simple. It often leaves me wondering if I can just get jars of the pickled radish and just snack on them all day long... although that might make the entire sandwich eating experience less special, and I reallllly wouldn't want to do that. The super-skinny baguettes are clearly fresh baked and are filled with delectable meats, although they offer veggie versions as well. Also, you've gotta try the Mr. Brown canned cafe sua da and you really outta steer clear of the artichoke drink. For real, trust me on both accounts. If I could underline that, I would. There's just something so classic about walking out of there with a bagful of mini baguettes that fill your car up with the wonderful smells of fresh bread, bbq meats, and bright cilantro. Sure, it ain't glamorous, and the last time I went there, it was still cash only. So bring some cash and load up on these super cheap puppies. Perhaps one of only a few good things that came of the French colonization of Vietnam...

The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that I haven't gone anywhere else for bahn mi sandwiches. But I don't want to go anywhere else. Ever. I wish this place was open at all hours because I will say that it seems like about 50% of the time that I need one of these tasty sandwiches and my watering mouth drops by, they aren't open. Maybe that adds to the allure. (Or maybe I should just take 3 seconds and look up their hours. But what can I say - obsession will make you do crazy things.) Like Binh Minh is playing hard to get - which just makes you want it even more because it's sooooo good. The shop is without frills (and possibly without a recent health dept inspection) and is cash only - but I just DON'T CARE. My fav is the BBQ Pork (get it with jalapenos - even if you're a spice wuss, it's really not that spicy). Ordering just one always leaves me hungry for more, but two is too much, so I always err on the side of caution, order two ($2.50 a piece? Duh.), then have an extra half for the most delicious late night snack ever.

  • Jen S.

A decent selection of bahn mi, twelve different kinds, including scrambled egg and sardine. Each sandwich is 2.50, unfortunately no free sandwiches regardless of the number you buy. They also offer a limited number of desserts and deli items, including sugar cane juice. The owner said it was fresh, but it didn't taste too fresh.

  • Kristina L.

Best banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) shop in town! The bread that they use is absolutely amazing; it is baked daily in house & is always super fresh with a perfect crunch when toasted! They also have the best banh pate chaud (pork filled pastry), golden & flakey! No one else comes close! Once you try a banh mi & pate chaud here, it's hard to eat these things anywhere else...they really set the bar. Also try the banh bao & the different varieties of che (Vietnamese dessert).

Them's some tasty Vietnamese sammiches! Not as good as that place in the tenderloin back in SF that squished them flat in a grill, but definitely second to that. Cheap too! Not the cleanest place in town, but we all know that clean does not equal tasty, no?

I tried to find this place yesterday. It turns out I went to the WRONG restaurant. There is another restaurant in the area with a very similar name. They serve pho, no sandwiches. Today I went back and found the correct place. Outstanding, outstanding. This is like stepping into Vietnam... they suggested sandwiches because "other Americans like those". Hehe. When I ordered number 1 she was unsure I would like it because it has liver that Americans don't like. Well it was delicious. Really great.

I wrote a review about Maxim Bakery a while back ago. And now their new name is Binh Minh Bakery....*sheesh* So here it is, Binh Minh Bakery or Maxim Bakery is the same place, same owner, same crappy service and same good taste. Go to this page for my review: yelp.com/biz/maxims-deli… Don't get me wrong though... their Banh Mi (pork sandwich) is really good. Many hardcore Vietnamese love their sandwiches. So if you don't care about anything but a sandwich then you should come here. I just don't like the cranky rude owner who has absolutely no concept of customer service.

the good: -they bake their own bread! -crispy and the ingredient is fresh. this is as close to banh mi you can get in Vietnam. -cheap, but in a good way. i like #1 (combo of meat), egg (get it without the carrot. the flavors doesn't work with each other), and sardine (my cat sticks up his nose to find where the fishy smell is coming from and sits in front of me. i can't help but give him some of the fish). you can get 2 eggs sunny side up along with cilantro, jalapeno, and pate on a tray. it's $1.50 more but if you like dipping your bread in runny egg then go for it. order 1 extra empty banh mi. the bad: -sometimes they use bread they didn't bake! it's so bad and the way the sandwich is prepared is totally different. that happened recently because their oven broke down. -the opening time is like a rubber band. it's not consistent and makes me cranky when i'm hungry. give them a call. -it's closed on Monday! that's not cool. my friend just called the other location and the owner is willing to make some for us because she's there to make banh mi for someone who ordered 100+. minus one star for the occasionally bad quality and no banh mi Mondays.

case study for any of you out there who just get that uncontrollable itch to jam like 4 perfectly proportioned bahn mi subs down your gullet. Good flaky, crunchy bread too. They do 'em right here and they are cheap, fast, and the place is clean. nuff said!

We dashed in here to get a sandwich...I was skeptical but the bf assured me that this place made great sandwiches...I was not dissapointed. The sandwich rolls were fresh, and delicious, and the filling was equally so....with lots to choose from...this day I had chicken, and I will be back to work my way through the rest of the items on the menu, and you can't beat the price 2.50 per sandwich!...super bargin!

  • Katie M.

Delicious. I really like the grilled chicken sandwich, the shredded pork one is pretty great too. I think they bake their bread in house, and its wonderful. Vegetarian and vegan friendly, which is lovely, its almost hard to pay more than $6 for a meal, and thats if you get soup and a sandwich or two sandwiches (I'm good with one...and maybe a few bites of someone elses soup). Their lychee drink is awesome, but you can also find aloe drinks, mango nectar, and a bunch of other types of nectars or juices or waters that I've never heard of.

The experiance alone is worth traveling to Binh Minh Bakery. A bastion of Asian American business's in the heart of Portland, Oregon!! Who would have known.... Walking into Binh Minh Bakery was very much like stepping out of America and into Vietnam. Even the inexpensive prices reflect on the authenticity of the experience.

This is the Vietnamese Sandwich place I have yet to beat. I think I have tried about 5 other places and none come close. Tiny little hole in the wall down the street from the pacific supermarket, where I can always find something good in the piles of junk after or before some sandwiches. There are 8 varieties in small or large. BBQ pork, Viet sandwich, pate, lemograss chicken, meat ball and a few other I cant remember. About the same size more meat in the large. $2 or $2.50. Just get 2 large and also you get the option of having hot chiles on the sandwich, which is a must.... The bread is small but fresh and perfect, very light and a nice crust that is not too hard. Inside there is carrots and maybe pickled daikon?, cilantro, some kind of mayo or spread, jalapeno, meat and or pate. I have tried all but the fish and they have all been good. I really like the lemongrass chicken that I have not had anywhere else. There are supposed to be some soups as well but I have never got past the sandwich. Go there and you will be addicted

i love everything about this place! by far the best banh mi in town. if you're starving and can't wait for them to make your sandwich grab a pate chaud to munch on while you wait. you will not be disappointed.
