Really great food and service. This is also my go to Thai take out place. You must try the Thai Tacos under appetizers. Their Soups and Curry dishes are fantastic as well. Lots of space for a larger group when no seating in the busy NW area. I love this place!

Super convenient location for where I live. It's the closest restaurant near me, and they have pretty good curry so it's not hard to convince me to eat here. As a vegan I greatly appreciate the fact that they offer two different types of meat substitutes in their meals (Tofu or Tempeh). It's still soy, but it's nice to have choices! You can always order extra vegetables as well. They have a dish that I can't remember the name of, but it's described as 'Asian tacos', and it's amazing. It's a fried appetizer of diced/minced chicken or tofu, rice, peanuts and some other things. It's fried until it's crispy and then chopped into bits so that you can scoop it into a leaf of green leaf lettuce, sprinkle it with cilantro, and eat until your heart is content. I love this dish. It is so amazing. We didn't discover it until our second visit, but I'd be more than willing to just eat that as my meal! I don't have a ton of experience in thai foods, or curry for that matter, but I can say that their curry is enjoyable. I enjoy the green curry quite a bit, and my husband loves the red curry. Dishes are served with rice on the side in either a ceramic pot with lid, or a larger metal one. Overall, I enjoy this restaurant and have no real reason to complain. However, they close often for family parties/dinners. If you're making a big deal out of it, make sure to call!

Beau Thai is good. I would like to speak of the wait staff. The wait staff are professionals and take in account for late night patrons. The food is quickly handed over. There is even a note of generosity given by the wait staff. I would like to complement on that. Beau Thai does have a good catfish with noodles dish. One would almost assume the catfish isn't there. It is. It is piled with spices and it swiftly fills the stomach with only a third of the dish gone. The Thai Iced Coffee is quite delicious. I would recommend coming here because of that and the fair prices.

Had lunch today at Beau Thai. My daughter ate here last week and suggested it. The first thing I noticed was the prices--cheapest Thai food prices I have seen in Portland. I love Pad Prih Khing and the Red Onion doesn't have it. Beau Thai had it for 7.50. I ordered it medium spicy and it was perfect. The green beans were crunchy and crisp and the sauce was tangy and just the right level of spice. Service was excellent and the interior is well done and nicely "Thai" restaurant. Highest recommendation. This place is now my "go to" place for Thai food.

Several of my predecessors have pontificated about the merits of the name of this restaurant. I myself appreciate the double entendre and the tie-in of the bow tie in the logo. The service here is quite good. The lady who seems to be running things is exceptionally sweet, and the server who helped me was pleasant. I had the eggplant and tofu lunch plate with 2 pepper-level spiciness. It came with a standard portion of rice, and was preceded by a small and refreshing salad. Everything was tasty and satisfying, and what they are deeming 2 pepper-level spiciness measures up with what most people would think that designation should mean. That is worth mentioning, since spiciness levels at Thai restaurants really seem to run the gamut. It was very clean inside, with a plush blue decor. I don't think it is very busy very often, so if you want a delicious Thai meal in a quiet setting, this is a good option.

When our party first arrived it was almost empty but thought we'd give it a shot. My girlfriend ordered a thai iced tea and when she stirred her drink out with her straw came a dead fly. Yes, it was IN her drink. She ordered a new one and the second came out fine. Next my friend accidentally knocked over her glass and it broke. Her menu hit it over and we were very apologetic. The waitress finally came over and we decided to just order appetizers for now. We still were not given silverware or napkins. Before our food came out another woman came over to us in a very confrontational way and asked what we wanted. We told her we just wanted appetizers for now but she was very rude. Now... My friends and I do not drink so it's not like we were drunks causing a scene. The two stars are there because the appetizer was really good, so we decided to order our meals. My friend got the heavenly beef and when it came out it didn't even LOOK edible and it wasn't. Everyone at our table tried it and spit it out it was so gross. My pad see ewe was good and so was the basil rice dish but the service was horrible and I had to go to two other tables and steal the napkins and silverware as the waitress never brought us ours. They were extremely rude and did not make us feel welcome. We will NEVER be going there again.

My favorite Thai place in Portland. They have the best tempeh in Town. Also, the only place that I've found that offers tempeh in your Pad Thai. The Spooky Turtle soup is a huge serving that you will get 2 full meals out of.

This is definitely one of the best restaurants in town! I love the owner; she is so sweet to her regulars, and the other servers have also given nothing but great service. I would recommend the tom ka gai soup, the mango sticky rice, and the curries.

I ate pad thai here. It was a large portion for a decent price. This was a take out meal, so I can't evaluate the dining in experience. I enjoyed the food, and it was enough for me to eat again the next day. It wasn't my favorite pad thai ever, but I would definitely eat here again.

I took time to review this place because the reviews in this page had convinced me to not eat here, but because this place is next to my new apartment I kinda wanted to give it a try. Well, I got the Pad Thai chicken and tomkha soup and they were both delish. The host was very sweet and helpful and the wait wasn't that bad (about 10-15 min i think) also the prices were reasonable given the neighborhood. Not the best Pad thai I have had but it was good, the tomkha was a little sour but nice and brothy(just the way I like).Looks like the owners have took the negative remarks to improve upon because I don't have any complaints,I would recommend this place if you are ever in the neighborhood.

Went on a Saturday night. Service was slow and atmosphere was lacking, so we lowered our expectations for the food. Our meals turned out to be surprisingly high quality. I ordered panang curry with tofu. Super-fresh vegetables and nice level of spicyness. Also, a steal at $9 for the entree.

The place was nice and clean, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Hostess was welcoming but not to chatty. The food was good. I ordered the drunken noodles. The serving was big and could be shared among two people. One thing to note, if you want the different types of chillies one has to ask for them, they're not in sight. Overall not my favorite place for Thai food but good enough if ones in the area!! C. Galvan

We ordered the Pad Kee Mov and the Drunken noodles (see photo), both with tofu. They are essentially stir-fried flat rice noodles. You do get to choose the spice level. We asked for them to make it hot and hot it was! But not the keep-gulping-down-water kind of hotness but just plain tasty hotness! Also liked the texture of the rice noodles. The only thing mild on our table was the Sake! Perhaps, a little too diluted... Anyway, the place has a nice ambiance, clean and tidy. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Checks all the boxes, can't ask for more.

I eat a lot of Thai food in this town and this was hands down the worst I've had. The lady at the cash register was really sweet when I picked up my take out order but that was all I can say good about the place. The yellow curry was bland, the wrong color and generally not good. I also ordered the Amazing Eggplant (fried eggplant with ground chicken and prawns) and instead got Roasted Eggplant (roasted eggplant with shrimp, basil, hard boiled eggs and "special sauce"). Not only did the eggplant look like a plain, steamed eggplant with no sauce, but it was topped with 2 shrimp. Really? That's a serving size? Just say no. Really.

In cities rife with trendy restaurants and high turnover, it is satisfying to dine at establishments that have been around for years. It is true that these types of family-run neighbourhood 'institutions' often rely upon regulars and have the tendency to rest on their culinary laurels, but these restaurants are important to a community's identity and economic foundation. I was in Portland with my mom in May of 2013 and she really wanted to go out for Thai one night. We stumbled upon Beau Thai on 21st Avenue, but before we entered I Yelped Thai restaurants in the northwest. I quickly discovered that Beau Thai failed to place in the top three. This was a bit disconcerting so we checked the menu of nearby Red Onion and another place on 23rd. They looked good, but they also looked like they were trying a bit too hard. We opted for Beau Thai, and not only was the food flavourful and light (we ordered the roasted eggplant stirfry, pad thai, and salad rolls), my mom remembered that she had eaten there five years before with my dad. She spoke to the owner, who was serving us, and expressed how much she liked the restaurant and the food. The owner was over the moon that we had come all the way from Canada to eat at her restaurant, and she described some of the challenges the restaurant has had as of late. This was a great dining - and socio-economic - experience. As a diner, you have the ability to influence your neighbourhood with your wallet. Next time you are going out and are tempted to try that new bistro serving biodynamic spot prawn risotto with preserved lemon, or what have you, consider using your money to support a restaurant with history and cultural significance :) Red Onion may have had dishes with more complexity and obscure ingredients, but Beau Thai served solid food with a local flavour.

Loved the food. Tried the green curry, red curry, and salad rolls with my husband and it was all delicious. The service was wonderful and quick - such nice, nice people here! We will definitely be back for our next thai food night. (They do take out too! )

My fiance and I both love this place! The owner is so sweet and welcoming. We always have enough leftovers for a perfect second meal. Their food is always good, fresh and satisfying. Beau Thai has the best Thai iced-tea! It is never too busy and service is always quick.

A very nice place. Although it was quiet when we were their (around 6:30pm on a Tuesday). The waitress was very nice. The food was actually very good. My friend order a half-size #21Tom Yum Goon Soup (for half of the price). He really liked it, and he was kinda full after finishing it. So a great deal. I had #41 Sen Lek Spicy Noodle Soup. I did not know what to expect for this though, but it was great. Although I asked for Hot (3 chilli according to the menu), but it wasn't that hot. But it was a big bowl with a lot of content, I could only eat half of it. What I really like about this soup is that it was not too sweet. Some Thai place put a lot of sugar in the soup. But not this one. Overall, it is a very good Thai place. (A little quiet on a Tuesday Night).

Consistency. No, it's not perfect, but it's always good. It's consistently tasty. It's kind of like the Taco Bell of Mexican food. Well, no. It's not that far off of being true Thai food, but it's not like it's perfectly authentic either. How about the Burrito House of Thai food? It's Thai, but it's not what you're going to get if you drive all the way to Thailand (we all have amphibious vehicles, right?). The only thing I forget is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING HERE. Sure, most people are probably going to just walk here or they're going to already be here shopping or something, but there are times when I'm feeling lazy and I just want to stop by to get food to bring home. If I'm going to do that, I need to remember to bring a food-picking-up-pal. That way I can drive around the block while he gets the food. If I'm on my own to get food, it's going to be somewhere with better parking like Tara Thai or Basil Thai or . . . well, one of the other 1,312 Thai restaurants within walking distance of the Pearl.

The food at Beau Thai was quite good, and the service was excellent. The woman who waited on us was so sweet and friendly! The portions were big, so you could definitely split an entree with someone, which would make a meal super cheap. The ambiance wasn't the greatest, but if you are simply looking to get some good food and friendly service, Beau Thai is a great pick.

Stumbled upon this place by accident last year when we got hungry on our way to Salt and Straw, and what a happy accident! In a city full of good Thai food, I'll still make the trek over here on occasion. The first time we went, our waitress was very kind, explaining the specials and giving us recommendations - all of which proved to be good. The food was delicious, and brought to us quickly. I got the salad rolls as an appetizer, and even shared between 4 people, there was plenty to go around. Every dish that each of us got was delicious, and my boyfriend and I have since made it a point to come back often. There is no MSG in the food, and the decor is beautiful. It's not the trendiest restaurant in the area, but if you're looking for delicious food and attentive service at a reasonable price, this is the place to be. Bonus: the lunch time massaman curry over rice noodles is to die for.

No no no. Just no. Oh HAY there. So, luckily in this metropolis of Portland, we seem to have an appreciation for Thai food. Or maybe it's just food. ANYWAY. This is not the place to get your Thai-fix on. I've tried it three times and third times wasn't a charm, it was....end of the road, my friends. Salad rolls, wtf? What was this in my mouth? It was a melody of bland horror and not-quite-ripe veggies. That's ok, it's just an appetizer. But - Pad Thai? You..can't make good pad thai? (Cliche statement coming forth...3....2.....1....) EPIC FAIL. I did not enjoy this pad thai at all. No spice, no flavor, just noodles faking my favorite Thai dish ever. So then I tried my second fav - Yellow Curry. NO. FAIL AGAIN. It makes me so sad. I really tried to like this place, I did. It's got such a cute name. But with places like Thai Peacock and E-san Thai, my thai-dedicated sheckles will be going elsewhere.

My family has been coming to this restaurant for about 9 years now. We absolutely love it and recommend it to everyone, and bring all our guests here. We even had Beau Thai cater my sons graduation party - and the party guests raved about the food. The food itself can sometimes be standard thai food, but there are two key standouts that we personally must get here: 1. The crab puffs on the appetizers menu. Almost every other thai restaurant has these, but the difference here is that these are not flat wontons that have a tiny bit of stuffing inside them. These are genuine PUFFS and are very full. When I order these at other restaurants, I'm always disappointed by the amount of fried empty wonton I have to tear away so that I can get a bite with some stuffing in it. Why would I want to eat just straight fried wonton wrapper? Pointless. Beau Thai makes these a really wonderful way - they are full, they are delicious, not too crabby tasting-but clearly made with crab, and (I'm pretty sure) you get 8 to an order. It's a great deal for the price. They also have peas in them, which I find delightful, my non-pea-loving son does not. I like the added flavor and the little bit of texture it brings. They aren't overwhelming so even though my son doesn't like peas, he still LOVES these crab puffs. 2. Peanut chicken. I don't actually know if that's even the name, but that's what we've been calling it for almost a decade. Regardless of what you call it, t's REALLY good stuff. It's this huge bowl full of chicken swimming in peanut sauce. It's almost a soup, but served over rice and oh-so-good. There's nobody in Portland that serves this in the same way (that we have ever heard of). We almost always order a separate dish of this to go home with us - it's even better the next day (I like it served in a wrap with lettuce- mmmmm!). **the chicken satay is also a favorite, but it's really just chicken and peanut sauce (see number 2 above). The service here can NOT be beat. We just adore the owner and her staff. If you call the order in, it will be ready quickly, and if you're in a hurry but eating there-just let her know and she will get your food to you in a flash. If you don't special request the speedy service, it's pretty normal wait time if you have a group-almost no wait time if there's just two of you, but you can definitely tell that the food is made fresh. The restaurant itself is wonderful. Great atmosphere, always very clean, good location, lots of seating. My friends and I love that they have these massive booths for groups, I think they probably fit 8-10 easily and have some wonderful privacy to them. Every time I'm there with a group, we feel like we're in a private room. Parking is the only issue. If you don't mind walking, just head down a couple blocks to 18th or so and you'll find lots. Parking on 21st is always a mess though and isn't a blight on the restaurant itself. I highly recommend Beau Thai - locally owned, authentic thai owner, perfect ambience, and wonderful food at reasonable prices all make for a great experience.

My favorite restaurant! I always have Panang Curry and Suda, the owner, remembers. The food is the best, and the place is spotless (it consistently gets top ratings for cleanliness in the restaurant report that one of the local news channels posts). I like the fact that you can talk over dinner because it's nice and quiet. It's a GREAT place!

I'm a sucker for a good (or for that matter, bad) puns, so Beau Thai already had my heart from the start due to their name (like a bow tie, which is featured in their signage, get it?). The decor must've been pretty nondescript, because I honestly don't remember a thing about it even though I was only there a few days ago. I'm not sure what it's like during peak hours, but in the afternoon, around 3:30pm, it was pretty sparsely patronized. I was with a group of 6 people, so we sat at one of the long tables. I was able to hear everyone, even way at the end of the table, and I was able to speak to everyone without shouting. This is a big bonus since I find it super annoying when I can't hear what people at the other end of the table are saying, let alone the person next to me. There are few things worse than missing the punchline to a joke when everyone else is laughing uproariously! The server was super nice and pretty attentive. I ordered the Earth Vegetarian noodles (or something like that); teriyaki rice noodles with steamed veggies and a thai iced tea. The meal was filling and somewhat generously portioned. I was famished, so I polished off everything. The meal felt pretty healthy and light, though, so I didn't have to deal with "itis" (Boondocks reference) afterward. All and all, the place was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away. I've had better tasting Thai, for cheaper. They have a one ticket per table rule, so be prepared for that as well.

My friend and I were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Although we got our food pretty quickly, I had to go up to the front and ask for a check because we had been sitting there for awhile. I wasn't that impressed with my order, which was Curry Noodle, and my stomach hurt for the rest of the night. I don't recommend this place.

It's not the best Thai restaurant pun, but that's because the best ones are about bondage, and the word "beau" always rubs me the wrong way. For some reason it is more associated with male than female, as in "strapping young man." What went wrong with the word beau? If you think of it more in the French manner, as beautiful, then it works much better in the restaurant name, Beau Thai. Aside from that, I'm not a certified expert on Thai food, but it's a consistent relief to me that I don't have to be. Stop any person on the street and you'll have even odds that they're an "expert" on Thai food. I have, on occasion, eaten Thai food that I thought wasn't prepared very well, but most of the time I find it ALL delicious. Thai restaurants are also good for your gluten-free dates because of the use of rice noodles, and because, unlike the Chinese, they lay off the soy sauce. Soy sauce is made out of wheat-- believe it or else! Our dinner was delicious, the presentation was elegant, and best of all, the restaurant is spacious and relaxed. I can't tell you what a vacation it is getting away from the New York style dining where you have to lock arms with neighbors at adjoining tables. The coconut ice cream and the Thai iced coffee, also very good.

Very solid Thai restaurant. Food was good and service was excellent. Try the asian tacos (miang khao) super interesting and delicious. Was not very busy on a Saturday night which was surprising considering the quality of the food.

We stopped in yesterday for lunch, and had a great experience. The location is very conveniently located in NW, and the food was some of the better Thai we've had in PDX. A shared order of the salad rolls and the Pad Kee Mao were the perfect amount of food for a quick lunch. We really appreciated that the noodle dish was not sopping with oil, a problem we've had at other Thai restaurants on occasion. Service was quick and very friendly. The atmosphere is a little hodge-podge, and I think some new tables/chairs would really bring the space up a few notches; however, the giant booths in one area of the restaurant are perfect for a bigger crowd of friends, so I'm excited about doing lunch or dinner with a larger group. Looking forward to our next visit already!

Why do I keep coming back? I guess it's because I love Thai food (even painfully boring Thai food) and I'm lazy (this is my 'hood). I would rate Beau Thai one star, but it gets two for the cutesy, creative name and the fact that I keep coming back for mediocrity. I ALWAYS order the Pad Thai and I'm ALWAYS disappointed. It just lacks flavor. It does come with peanut sauce and that's not always a given with Pad Thai, so I guess that detail helps Beau Thai keep its two stars. But don't be lazy like me. You can do so much better for Thai.

Honest, delicious, affordable, extraordinary Thai food. Despite the fact that this restaurant is often a little chilly inside, this is one of our favorite places to go. The owners couldn't be nicer and the prices are excellent, especially given the Nob Hill location. I personally recommend their noodle dishes.

I wanted to like this place, because it's so close to my apartment. I really wanted to like it. It's been around forever so I figured it couldn't be that bad. The first time I went, I ordered a stir fry that looked great on the menu. I was looking forward to it. When it arrived, it was greasy slop. The taste was salty and uninspired and gross. Many months later, I was too tired to walk very far, so I decided to try this place once again. Big mistake. My last time had been so bad, that if it weren't just down the street I never would have given it a sceond chance. But I was hungry, and tired, and I thought maybe the B chef had been on that first time. This second time, I tried the Pad See Ew. The noodles were too oily and their texture was tough. The vegetables tastes OLD and off, not fresh. My stomach hurt after eating it. I won't make the mistake again of going down the street to this place.

I hadn't been to Beau Thai in two years and the owner who was working when I dropped in for a take-out order recognized me, greeted me warmly and I walked jauntily back home with my food. Unfortunately, the quality of the meat was so bad that after four pieces of chewy & rubbery meat, I gave up altogether and picked it out. The place surprisingly was dead for a Saturday night. Not a single diner in sight. I think it's a strong indication that the overall quality of the food has dropped and people are choosing to eat elsewhere. What happened? How disappointing..

We were debating between Santa Fe and Laughing Planet on the way back from Macleay Park... when suddenly I asked, "what about Thai?" I got burned out on Thai after 10 years in Oakland and honestly have only had Thai food a handful of times in the last two years (at the same two places, Sweet Basil in the NE and at the Thai cart near PSU), but curry sounded good to me last night. And Thai sounded good to her. So we went to Beau Thai. The nicest woman on the planet greeted us, took our order and chatted about the lovely day while they prepared our to-go dinner. All the main dishes on the menu seemed to have vegetable/tofu options as well as meat options. No crab rangoon, but that was a good thing because I was trying to avoid dairy and fried food and I would've just been tempted... (I suspect no one can top Sweet Basil's crab rangoon anyway, and it's now four blocks from my apartment. A scary but amazing thought.) She opted for the drunken noodles with chicken, I went for the green curry with tofu. It was all fantastic. The sticky rice was awesome, the dishes tasted fresh and the curry was pleasantly spicy but not overly-so. Parking is hard but parking is hard EVERYWHERE in the NW, and we were walking, so whatevs. They have outdoor seating and the indoor seating was pleasant and open. The price was right - most items were between $7-9 - and the portions were large. And the best part? Nothing leaked out of the containers on the way home. It's the little things...

If Beau Thai weren't literally steps away from my door, would I go there so often? Maybe not. But if it weren't for the dependable food and friendly staff, it definitely wouldn't have become such a regular place for take-out. Usually I order the salad rolls and yellow vegetable curry, but have mixed it up some and enjoyed pretty much every other dish. It's not necessarily the most amazing Thai food you'll ever have, but it's satisfying and well priced.

i've had thai food from LA to Bangkok and i have never had pad see eww with coliflower in it. the noddles were huge sheets, not wide strips, and it wasn't as sweet as im used to. none of this detracted all that much from the dish, but it was definitely not authentic. we also ordered the pineapple fried rice which was a solid part of our meal, and others seemed to like the red curry although i found it to lack the right proportions of flavor. we ordered take out so it did the trick for a rainy portland evening spent in doors, but just be aware going into it that it wont blow your mind on all things thai could be.

My favorite Thai place ever. It looks like there are reviews ranging from "best pad thai I've ever had" to "worst pad thai ever." This reviewer is giving Beau Thai two thumbs up. I've been going here for about ten years. We used to get large to-go orders at work which is how I discovered the Swimming Angels dish; a delicious peanut sauce with vegetables and chicken. YUM. Again, I've been going here for about ten years and it's been fantastic every time. Their thai iced teas are fantastic and I usually get one just to stay awake after eating a large meal. The restaurant itself has large booths for groups and excellent service. I've tried many other thai restaurants, both in Portland and all over this great wide world, and I still have dreams of swimming angels.

Update: I went back to Beau Thai recently and have deducted 2 stars. All the dishes we got could have been executed much better. Everything was average in taste. WHAT HAPPENED? Maybe their regular cook is just on vacation. But also the service was not quite on top of their usual game either. Slow to refill water. Slower to get check. We got tired of waiting and just walked up to the register. If this was the only game in town, I might give it another chance, but with Iyara, Kinara, Thai Orchid, Sweet Basil AND Thyphoon so close, why bother. Sorry to be such a jerk. I used to love this place.

Beau Thai has a very nice server, beautiful presentation, and the right price- but the food itself is lacking. The shrimp was overcooked and the eggplant looked delicious and crispy, sitting steaming on the plate with an adorable carrot lotus on top, but it ended up being overcooked, flavorless, cold, and wet. Very odd. Maybe if I had stuck with the masuman curry I order at every Thai joint, I would have been more pleased. But that's what I get for being experimental!

You know how when you see a place with a snappy name you think.... maybe the name is better than the food? Well this is not the case for Beau Thai. I have eaten here a number of times and have always been pleasantly surprised at both their food and service. The tofu and veggies with peanut sauces is wonderful, as is their thai salad. They'll let you get everything ( so far) with tofu, and their portions are very generous. It's a neat atmosphere and a fun spot for a lunch time thai indulgence.

I went to Beau Thai last week at the suggestion of VZ Navigator and my proximity to the place at the time. The place was nice, though empty for a Monday lunchtime. The appetizer salad came with a dressing that was way too sweet, but the panang curry was delicioso! I would've wished for a little spicier options, though. The prices were incredibly reasonable, too -- it only cost $15 for two people. However, I'm still looking for a Portland Thai restaurant that offers tempeh. Any suggestions?

New favorite thing. "Asian Tacos" appetizer. crispy rice n' stuff, that you wrap in lettuce (sprinkled with lime) and then gobble up, even the parts that fall out on the table. This place is still reasonably priced too. Hot tea is $1 and the entire dinner bill for 3 people was under $40.

I used to love Beau Thai when I first moved in to the NW neighborhood several years ago. Then one day they put up a sign saying the owners were out of town on vacation for an extended period of time. Upon return, they must have forgotten what made their food so sought-after. There's just something missing. The chicken is always dry and the veggies in the curry are overcooked. It's still an okay place to take friends who are terrified of spicy dishes, but I need more and there are mysteriously more than enough Thai restaurants to choose from. (How can Portland support a Thai restaurant on every corner?)

I ducked in here for a late lunch/early dinner the other day and was very impressed. I love sampling Thai restaurants on vacation (I'm from Los Angeles) I have really seen the range in quality, taste and price. This place was excellent on all fronts. We ordered family style and since there were nine of us we got a chance to sample quite a few dishes: The panang with green beans was phenomenal. This was among the most popular dishes we ordered at the table, and very flavorful. The spice and power was definitely there, but not the single overpowering note it sometimes gets reduced to. There was quite a nice compliment of flavors going on. The Pad See Ew was also highly popular and several commented that this was one of the best dishes of the night. Unlike many Pad See Ew dishes, in this one you could actually taste the bean curd in the sauce, rescuing it from "that brown noodle dish" to its original intent. The yellow curry with chicken was also excellent, though very mild, and quite a hit. I love curry (and my friends and family always indulge me) but even they agreed this was a great dish--though milder than many I have had. I normally have it all to myself but this time I had some competition from a normally very reticent and picky 12 year old. If you want spice, ask them to make it spicier or skip this dish, though I would recommend it for anyone at the table who is hesitant about ordering anything too spicy. Rounding out our order were a good noodle soup, a tasty sweet and sour pork, chicken lairb, a spinach dish and a shrimp dish plus some flavored rice. We washed it all down with thai iced teas and a very sweet and very natural tasting strawberry lemonade Oh, and of course some dessert. The coconut ice cream with flakes of dried coconut sprinkled on top was great, and the fried bananas with chocolate sauce for dipping were a fun little diversion, if a bit greasy (but with fried in the name I'll level this criticism with some discretion). The place is warm and inviting with nice splashes of color and large, comfy booths for big groups of family and friends, and feels much more upscale than the great value it affords. If you're in the neighborhood I suggest dropping in.

The service was exceptional - unobtrusive, but on top of making sure water glasses were refilled, friendly check-ins. I'm still a novice to thai food, so I can't speak to how it ranks with other thai restaurants. I had the swimming angel with chicken, which was delicious - peanut sauce, chicken breast, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. The decor was lovely - the only drawback was the really awful slow rock 80's mix they had going on. Lionel Richie and Wham! ::shudder:: But the food made up for it. We'll definitely go back!

I wish I had checked yelp before I walked down the street to Beau Thai for the first and last time. Very nice lady behind the counter, worst pad thai I've ever had. WORST. The chicken was practically flavorless, with the exception that it was overly salty. I'll assume that's salt left over from processing cheap, badly raised and slaughtered chicken. The sauce was.....creamy texture without any flavor added. Perhaps they added too much vegetable oil or something? Pad Thai is a cop out at any place. As such, if nothing else is good, the pad thai should be passable. This was anything but.

I went here a looooong time ago but I don't remember how the table service is...so i'm rating the take-out. The food was pretty good, but not great. You have to ask if you want seafood instead of chicken, but the price works out to about $9.50...so not bad. But Thai Orchid is closer and about the same in quality...so unfortunately I don't really go there for lunch anymore.

One of my favorite restaurants in Portland, and one that I single out to take guests coming to town, and even choose for my own special meals, such as birthday. The atmosphere is great, the food is delicious and prices are very reasonable.

Good food, fairly quick service, and somewhat stereotypical atmosphere, but the one complaint I had was that our server seemed a little rude, right from the get go. We didn't come in with a group of 20, or screaming children, or 10 minutes before closing. Just 4 adults at 5:30 on a Sunday evening, the place wasn't slammed, and no one was trying to order anything crazy. Huh, what can you do? The Phad Thai (my staple order when trying out a new place) was good, with lots of veggies, and the noodle soups and Larb Gai ordered by the rest of the table were enjoyable, and exactly what was needed before hopping back in the car to drive home to Seattle. I can't say I'd go out of my way to go there again when I'm in town, there are plenty of other great restaurants to check out, but if I was craving some Thai, I'd give it another go.

Good Thai in primo location I especially like this Thai place for its location and ambiance. Nestled right on NW 21st in the heart of a happening neighborhood, it's a nice surprise that you don't have to pay a hip price to match a hip location. Dark, cozy booths and communal-like tables make you feel like you're eating at a family table, which is a fun feeling when out with friends. The food is better than average with huge servings. I'm sure there's more adventurous items to try, but we always get the chicken Phad Thai and salad rolls. It's more than enough food for two. I won't give this place high points for flavor but considering its location and interior, it definitely rates better than most. Tip: This place gets busy because of its location, so either show up early or plan a later dinner to avoid a wait.

this isn't a great thai place, but if you're out in nob hill and you're looking for a place, you won't be disappointed or enthralled. the setting is alright enough, nothing too friendly but not distracting either. the service on the night that my party of 4 went was pretty abysmal, however. extremely rushed, unhelpful, and we were treated as if we were a hassle rather than guests. listen: i'm super-sorry if you don't feel like waiting on people, but then get a new job. what's worse is that i got the impression that the waitress was an owner or at least involved in the business; this is not the best way to promote yourself. that said, once the food arrived i was pleasantly surprised. it wasn't the best thai i've had, but everything was flavorful and well put together. all of our dishes were very unique from one another, and all very good. none of them were particularly spicy--our waitress hadn't asked us how spicy we wanted them in her haste so they all came mild--but they all were well done, and reheated very well the next day. i'd like to try this restaurant again, so i can get a proper experience. hopefully the service is better next time!

"If Beau Thai were a dining tuxedo..." [And if I could try to be any cuter with a badly written review...] . scrap . that . I need to check out this place again. It's only fair. No, there's been no arm-twisting by Beau Thai crew or severed drunken-noodle-heads left in my bed. I just want to revisit some places I've reviewed when I first came to town and give 'em another go. (Though it should be said that I've been distracted by trying out other places and have returned to some of said places and have even more spots I want to try on my list... So yeah, for what it's worth...)

Very good service, except that our server did not seem very knowledgeable about what was in the food. I wouldn't go here if I had a food allergy because you may inadvertently be served something you didn't ask for.

Average... which is weird in Portland. We were there for lunch and got the Pad Thai and the Pad Se ew. Both items were pretty spicy at a 3 or medium spice but not impossible to eat. I was really looking for the sweet and salty blend in the Pad Se Ew and also for that wonderful chargrilled flavor that you normally have. It was very very salty. Limited veggies and the chicken was extremely dry for that kind of saucy dish. Service was friendly, but poor. There were only 3 tables at lunch, and a few people waited for a bit and left because the host was no where to be seen. We will try Beau Thai in a few months again and see if anything has changed.

Called in for take-out order of papaya salad and drunken noodles. My goodies were safely packed and secured, and the drunken noodles were tasty and had plenty of veggies and beef. It was kind of sad to see the place absolutely empty on a Saturday night because I think they're a great neighborhood joint. I also prefer their Pad Thai compared to other, more popular places in Portland b/c Beau Thai doesn't overdo it on the sweetness. I shouldn't have to feel like I get my entree and dessert in one dish, people!

If you dine in, you can usually expect to be one of the few people there. Don't let the emptiness throw you though, the food is tasty, with plenty of vegan, meat, and seafood options. The staff is so nice and attentive. Entertaining music, too. I like to support them!

This place is bangin'! They have such a wide variety of vegan options, and all of them are delicious. I've never had a meal here that I didn't like, and the staff is super friendly. I typically see more sit down business at lunch, then a ridiculous amount of take out at night. Definitely would recommend/bring friends here.

I love love love love the food here with an exclamation point and this place deserve a medal and 5 star. I have been eating here for over 8 years and it along with Baan Thai near PSU are my top 2 favorite thai restaurants. I always come here for pad thai and pineapple fried rice, sometimes I will get the tom yum and curry but those are the 2 dishes that I get everytime. It taste just right and delicious everytime, I always order it mild and add chili powder to adjust the spicy level to my taste. I love the owner she is so nice and friendly just like my mother, and sometimes she gives me appetizers or drinks as bonuses which I really appreciate. I refer all my friends and family here for a reason because the food is great, the service is awesome and an enjoyable experience everytime. Highly recommended.

Excellent service and exceptional food. I come regularly for the Sen Yai Tom Yum. Its a big bowl with lits of goodies and wide flat rice noodles. I always leave feeling better than when I entered. Also a great spot for vegetarians. Most places can substitute Tofu, but Beau Thai gives the option of veggies, tofu, or house made tempeh. The tempeh is a great texture if you like your meat subs to have a little more chew to them. I recommend getting a thai iced tea with coconut nilk. They use a special thick version thay looks like snow on top. Its like drinking candy.

Wow what a disappointment we have been coming here multiple times over the last several years and I've always had great meals but it appears that the service and the food quality has gone down significantly we ordered the curry with red bell peppers only my wife is allergic to green the curry came out full of green bell peppers we returned the dish and asked to make it right, they took the dish away and within three minutes a new curry dish came out I asked how can that be they said oh we just took someone who was on a to go order. looking at the curry dish it now had no red peppers in it. Asked where the red peppers were and they said oh were out of red peppers, I said thank you very much returned the dish paid for appetizer and went to another restaurant. Its unfortunate that they can't get their act together we wont be back There was only one other person in the restaurant at 6 PM

Excellent service. But the food isn't quite "awesome" as comparable to other thai restaurants in downtown portland. I ordered the pad thai with shrimp which had a fine presentation and had a good amount of pad thai sauce cooked in, but it was bland and the noodles were overcooked. So Yelpers, all this isn't a bad place to go for lunch but not the best either.

PROS: -Decent prices -Extremely sweet and attentive server -No MSG in the food -Spacious and open interior CONS: -The pad thai I had was disappointing. I've never eaten such greasy pad thai before, and it did not taste good. -I got a bad stomachache from eating this dish I'm seeing that some of the other reviewers are saying they used to be regulars at this restaurant but the quality of food went downhill. Despite the numerous pros, I won't be back because Portland has a plethora of Thai places that won't make me feel sick.

When I worked in Northwest Portland I used to eat lunch here at least twice a week. And I loved it! It was a short walk from my place of work and they never rushed you to leave. It was the perfect place to have lunch and a business meeting. More importantly it's just across the street from city market northwest and I could run across the street grab what I needed for home and go back to work. Anyhow I digress- I took my family here and was very excited about sharing with them this little cute Thai place from years gone by. One of the first things we noticed when we walked in with the smell of dirty fryer grease. That wasn't appetizing at all. We ordered our usual standard fare for lunch as we are creatures of habit and typically order the same kinds of things in Thai restaurants because we know what we like. Can't go wrong there. I can't quite put my finger on it but things just were not up to par. They weren't as I remember them, Some of the sauces were down right watery, And anything that we ordered that was fried you could taste the old grease. Note that sucked. This place would've got a negative star however the service was amazing. That part hasn't changed. Our server was kind, delightful and just a joy to be around. We of course left her a very very nice tip. It's not her fault the grease is dirty, or the food is in up to par. Well I be back? I honestly am not sure. I truly believe that the good old days for this place are days gone bye. :(

I'm surprised that there are so many positive reviews. The hostess/waitress was very sweet and helpful. The food was okay and the prices were good. I ordered the Pad Thai, which had little to no flavor but was decent. My friend had asked for a little more sauce because her noodles were a little dry. The chef came out and was, in my opinion very rude and in your face. My friend was not complaining, but very politely asking for some sauce. I would not go back because of the service we received from the chef.

Took some advice from some yelpers and decided that my sister and I try this thai resturant. I was very, very satisfied. Thank you yelpers! Eventhough we were the only people in there on a Thursday evening at 6:30, didn't make me turn away. We orderd to start, vegetable roll. Awesome! Between the 2 of us we ordered spicy duck curry, Phad Thai w/prawns and 2 Thai Iced Tea. Great, Great and Awesome! I could drink another on of those Thai iced teas just thinking of it. The lady that waited us was so sweet and friendly. I've eaten Thai food from diffrent regions, I think this was one to return for. A lot of food, should have just shared one dish. OMG!

YUM!!! I've just discovered this place and I am SO excited!! I love their options for us Veg. lovers and the quantity of food I get! So savory, so YUM!! I'm very much looking forward to trying more of the menu!!! ... WELL SCRATCH THAT ^ Unfortunately, I found out that the owner of this establishment is extremely disrespectful to her employees. I don't support places like this. Food's good if you don't care who's making it.

I have been coming to this place often for take-out, most when my boyfriend is out of town on biz, which is pretty often. Last time we came her together for a romantic night dinner. We were impressed, the atmosphere is perfect and it has all aspects of a fine cuisine environment. If you want to impress your significant other with some authentic exotic and delicious dining, this is the place to go! Everything has a rich, tasty flavor, except for one or two chicken dishes. It may be though because I do not like chicken so much. For some reason I always go for the exquisite salad rolls and their spicy soups, with some variation, but it seems I am addicted and do not have the power to eat something else because I like these dishes very much. I am going to be less conservative next time I come for take out and be a bit more daring!

As a frequent traveller, I welcome whatever the city I am visiting has to offer. After hearing about Portland's amazing diversity of health food, specifically it's ability to present a vast range of restaurants with gluten free menu options. Thai has always been a safe bet when considering a gluten-free diet, and from walking around the city we found an abundance of Thai, Chinese, Japanese restuarants. Being in the alphabet district, we spotted Beau Thai and decided to stop in for an early dinner. We were greeted with a hospitable host who also was our server. She was knowledgeable and gave us some recommendations for gluten free options. We ordered some traditional curry dishes along with soup and a main dish. The yellow curry has just enough kick and complimented the veggies and protein. Absolutely delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a low key Thai restaurant with a large menu.

No, it's not the most exquisite Thai food in town, but it's the best value. And if you have a group of 6-10 people on a weekend evening, and you cannot get in anywhere else in Northwest, it's perfect. Huge menu and therefore something for everyone, at a cheaper price point than Typhoon. Great lunch menu too (try eight huge salad rolls for approx. $5), and quick if you have to get back to work. The pad thai is good, the soups even better. Overall, the food is not quite as fresh as Typhoon.

Wonderful place! We happened on it by accident after several attempts to get waited on at a few other eating establishments. Beautiful interior. We were greeted the minute we walked in and sat immediately. Everyone was very friendly and always smiling. A pleasant change from the other places. Food was delicious, portions were large and the price was very affordable. I highly recommend this place if you like good thai!

  • Jamie C.

First, a note about the people saying that this place has bland or boring food... I have no sympathy for people saying something like that when you are able to CHOOSE the level of spice your dish has! It's not the fault of the restaurant! That being said, I've only eaten here a couple of times, but I love it. The portions are very big (enough to take home later!) and there is a great variety. Thai food is good pretty much wherever you go in Portland, but this place gets extra points for me because it is close, clean, and the food ready quick. I can't really think of any drawbacks, although I would like the prices to be a little cheaper (but again, the portions are so large that it's really no problem at all)

I used to work around the corner from Beau Thai (another pun thai restaurant!). Although not spectacular enough to warrant a trip from the other side of the river, Beau Thai was a good bet of a Thai restaurant to have at a stones throw. Big tables to serve big groups of us that went and good food. I especially liked the soups. Mmmmmmmm, their Tom Kha is delectable and huge enough to serve many.

  • Helene W.

Food is pretty good. I wont lie, Pad Thai is yummy....but they tend to over charge! Tonight, they charged me for lime for my water along with peanut sauce for my pad thai......good but for the value I would go else where.

If you are in the 'hood, this is a fine place to eat Thai. I think of it as the neighborhood Thai restaurant. It is a reliable place with a familiar menu. There are so many Thai restaurants in Portland. I would not drive across town to come here. But, it is a fine place for a business lunch or a casual meal.
