I'm still somewhat of a new patron, but over the last few months this place has really grown on me. They make a great Old Fashioned! The bar itself is kind of NW Hunter Gatherer décor. Lotsa wood paneling and old animal head trophies. Pretty big space with a pool table and sit down area in the back or front depended on which door you come in and fairly big bar at the other end. There is also out back seating and some seating out front on the street. It's nice and dark with just the right amount of sunlight coming through the window by the bar area. The bartenders know their drinks and have quite an eclectic taste in music too. Hank Williams to Stiff Little Fingers on any given day. Pretty cool people all the way around. I have only eaten there once, so I can't say too much about the food. I enjoyed the burger even though they got the order wrong on the first try. It was quickly fixed with no hassle. They have a brunch offering on the weekends which sounds and looks good. Looking forward to hanging my hat at Barlow many moons to come.

Had brunch at the Barlow Tavern today for the first time and was very pleased with the results. I can't believe I didn't try this sooner as I am only a couple blocks away. I had the huevos rancheros and took the cooks advice with getting my eggs sunnyside up. The egg yoke mixing in with the salsa, sour , and black beans was delicious. I also tried their bloody mary and enjoyed that as well. If you like your mary on the spicer side you should for sure get the jalapeno infused vodka. They have patio seating out front and also in back. The only thing I could do without are the creepy taxidermy animals that peer down on you from the walls. I will absolutely be back again. Thanks Barlow, you make a great addition to the neighborhood!

Popular neighborhood dive bar. Very eclectic mix of people (straight, LGBT, various races). We really liked the diversity here! PROS: Strong drinks, friendly staff, 50¢ billiards, video poker, jammin' music (ol' school R&B), good bar food outdoor seating. CONS: Overpriced food, only 1 pool table, bathroom locations, no parking lot just street parking that's very limited (we parked 2+ blocks away).

Great chicken and waffles! My issues are you have to order at the bar (I know it's the norm now) and your website states you are open at 11am on Sunday's so I show up at 11:30am for chicken and waffles and the doors are locked. Not cool

LOVE this place! My boyfriend and I come here almost every Friday night to have a beer and play some scrabble before we go out with our friends :). Everyone is super nice and all the drinks and food are on the cheap side! Fantastic tatter tots too :)

It baffles me that finding good fried chicken is so hard in a city that prides itself on food culture. While Screen Door and Country Cat are always great, I've longed for a neighborhood place that satisfied my appetite. A place that I can get a cheap beer, play some video poker and maybe catch some pub trivia. I'd tried George's and Fryer Tuck's, and while they are ok, I didn't realize until about six months ago that the place I was looking for was a mere few blocks from my house. Barlow has the best fried chicken I've had in a bar in Portland. Get it with waffles, get it on a sandwich with fries, it doesn't matter - It's great and you should give it a try. I do wish they had AC, BUT not enough to knock it a star. The chicken is that good. I've seen the sign for Meat Mondays and have always been intrigued but can't take my eyes off that chicken.

The one, the only, and the original Barlow Tavern. Others have used the a same name, but only go to the one on N Greeley Ave!! Best chicken & waffles in town!! Best staff!! Best place to spend your money at! By far!!

The ups: Amazing fried chicken, decent selection of whiskies, cheap drinks, clean tables, and my favorite painting. The downs: it's a bit hipsterish, with a high percentage of the patrons sporting skinny jeans and complicated facial hair, and Trivia Tuesday can get a bit crazy. Oh, and there's no table service, but I guess you can't have everything. All in all, I love this place.

I think if you live in this neighborhood then this place is, perfectly, acceptable. Aside from the chicken (which is tasty), expect what you'd expect from any neighborhood haunt (not dive... haunt). Regulars who TMI at the bar. Bartenders who TMI to the regulars. Sports on the TV. The Doors on the jukebox (really). It's a good place for groups to drink beer. It's a good place to play pool with friends. It's a good place for smokers due to the back patio and front tables. It's off 2 bus lines. Some bartenders are nice, some pretend you're invisible. Average bar, hit or miss. They run out of the chicken fast. Good after work place to catch up with a few friends, a few drinks and not have other patrons badger you for attention.

I can't give you a good rating just because you have modestly priced drinks (that's like bribery), but I can give you a horrible rating for the rudest service I've ever received. I won't even make any 'setting the bar low' jokes...See you never.

I suppose this stands for most dive bars, but there's never a dull moment at this place. My last visit in particular, I was shamelessly entertained by various couples' interactions. Let's just say that it was pretty apparent Barlow is a lot of older folks idea of a fine romantic time. I think this place has more character in the summer when they have picnic tables out and the doors open. It always seems to be steady busy with crowds during this time. Otherwise, for being so close in the neighborhood, it's an alright place to grab a drink. I have to say I was impressed with the Cajun tots also, definitely on the more spicy side served with some really good ranch dressing. I actually had to request more ranch and convince myself it wasn't a good idea to lick the dish.

This bar is amazing, but it was rude when some Yelp representative called the bartender to sell her on services while we were sitting at the bar enjoying our day. Apparently the better the yelp reviews, the more they harass the bar staff. Get your head on right yelp. I'm timing how long this will be here for...yelp?

Sort of a weird vibe with all the deer heads. Maybe they're going for a cabin feel? Meh. Who cares. Great cheap drinks and plenty of good and cheap beer. Note to self I made two recent discoveries. First, the food here is fucking fantastic. I had no idea. I mean really good. It wasn't expected. Second there is an outdoor patio out back. It's a little strange though as there is pretty much no lighting and it's pretty small. Almost creepy. But if you need a smoke and you want to stay dry they've got you covered. Figurative and literal. The music changes depending on who is behind the bar but they've been playing some really good shit from ever genre lately.

So far so good. My couple times here I had a great time. Shaun (owns Vendetta, too) I came here for first time and drank a couple beers, the bartender was engaging and having so much fun with the small crowd. Made place seem exciting. Cozy, log cabiny, neighborhood feel. They installed a obligatory TV, understandable, but it's not taking over the whole vibe. Heard burger is great. have not had yet. Good hospitality-

I tend to forget about the Barlow Tavern, and every time I pop in, remember how much I like it. For being classified as a "dive" - it is clean, lots of open space, and has a fairly interesting menu. I suppose the main thing about it that is dive-y is the love of cheap beer. The wood paneled walls are kind of gorgeous with no two matching, but amazingly well built. I would love to know the history of this place - might have to go do some research. The bartenders are always friendly. I don't think I have been here during Prime Drinking Hours - so I do not know what it would be like at capacity on a Saturday night. But it is a perfect stop on the way home

This place is great if you like really shitty service. We've been waiting for our food for almost two hours. This place is totally infested with entitled hipsters but I'm gonna give it 5 stars so I hope many more worthless shitbags come here and leave my favorite north Portland spots alone.

Love the atmosphere and happy hour prices. The fried chicken sandwich is amazing and looking forward to chicken and waffle my next visit.

Pleasantly surprised by this very sketch looking bar on Greenly Ave near Adidas Headquarter. Despite not having a full array of alcohol, I still had quite a good time munchin' on their greasy fries and drinking PBR. Oh so classy.

Do yourself a favor - have the chicken and waffles. Amazing neighborhood bar. Great staff, very welcoming. Friendly regulars. Lots of beer (cheap to glomorous) options.

Just love this place. Tap selection is very good, and the food will surprise you, but it's mostly for the incredible vibe. Low key, unpretentious, and friendly. The heated patio is a big plus too.

Friendly staff. GREAT prices. Not much of a crowd. Didn't eat. Just had a couple beers. Ok spot..

Ordered food and never got it. Re-ordered food and still never got it. Bartender couldn't care less. It's like the Florida room on a busy night: wait in a long line with tons of hipsters to get drinks.

Taxidermy animals, Danzig on the Pandora playlist, and grizzled 60 year old bikers to chat with at the bar. This neighborhood watering hole really fit the bill on a wet Sunday night. I drank Laurelwood red (yum, yum) and chatted with the regulars and the barkeep whilst ignoring the football game playing on a TV behind the bar. If I lived in the area this would be my local for sure.

Tonight I satisfied my long term craving for this place. The woman behind the bar was awesome, decidedly not a drone. Food came surprisingly fast, but It was slow and the kitchen does appear to be tiny. My wife said her burger was as good as Darcy's. My chicken basket was delicious. My hipster radar didn't really go off and that's a good thing. The only negative? It was a sunny day and the doors were open, allowing cigarette smoke into the indoor dining area. I can't abide that. Otherwise I'd have given all five stars.

I pass by this place all the time and had always been a little curious about what was going on inside. I stopped by on a rainy night a few months ago and was impressed by the selection and the laid back atmosphere of this place. I returned last weekend and was pleasantly surprised that not much had changed. The bartenders were really nice and the fries were pretty damn good too. It's nice to have an alternative to Yorgos in the neighborhood that's not as fancy as the old gold.

I can walk to you, cabin decor, patio. Sweet. Burger not so great, kind of...soggy. Friendly bartender and cook. If you're nearby, it'll do.

Unsuspecting small neighborhood bar turning out legit food at reasonable prices. You'll appreciate the great rotating selection of micro brews and friendly service. The fried chicken sandwich/ basket is amazing, as is the steak and salad. But don't eat the shoestring fries... those are MINE!

Big fan already. Just spent my first evening there. Excellent food and I heard the cocktails were just right. All of their pickled things are yummy, beet salad was extra yummy and burgers are perfect. Great atmosphere. Dark and warm. Taxidermy on the walls. Huge space, but well used.

The bartender with the curly hair is fantastic. She makes me feel like a regular even though I only stop in periodically, and she's super quick even when it's busy. Cool atmosphere, cheap prices, they finally started serving pitchers!

Love this place. It's just beautiful, drinks are great, Matthew the bartender is better. No trip to Portland is complete without a visit to the Picnic House and now a visit to Barlow! Go, it's perfect.

If you wait for over 45 minutes for your food, don't you dare ask where it is. When it finally comes, you will get a server who tells you that this is "not a fast food restaurant." It is frustrating to watch people come in before you be served and leave before you even see your food. In other news, if you are coming for the chicken sandwich (which is good), don't expect it to be available. They were out of chicken which is disappointing considering they have several chicken items on the menu. Lastly, you should probably dress warm. I have never been in this place when it wasn't freezing cold. You think they could shut a door but maybe they keep the doors open for the hot tempered servers? So it's safe to assume I won't go back....

I like this little place. Any bar that serves Guinness on Draft is good in my book. The usual bartender lady pours it nicely. They have a great selection of beers, so everyone is usually pleased when we meet up here. The food selection isn't as awesome as the booze selection. I wish they would update the menu/get better chicken*, but the fried cauliflower is good! *I should note that the fried chicken is battered nicely and cooked well, but the actual chicken itself is meh. I'd pay a buck or two more to get better quality.

I've been here a few times and I really want to like this place, but I can't. Very hipster bar scene with, as I would put it, "Seattle prices" for beer. Call me cheap, but $4.75 for a pint of micro seems a bit high for a dive. Maybe they're going for the "faux dive" thing, but I'm not a huge fan...

I love this place - my new favorite 'spot' in NoPo! Food is amazing and bartenders are super friendly. Fried chicken is a must-try and fries are hand tossed with savory seasonings. Only thing missing is a juke box, but the bartender's iPod seems to kick out the good tunes.

This place has a lot of potential! Although I've lived in the neighborhood for a while now, I never once went into this bar. I believe it just changed ownership and it caught my eye one warmer evening when they left the front door open. I peered inside to find that it wasn't old man dive bar I had always envisioned it being on the inside. There were young people inside! The interior has wood paneling and has deer heads and the like. They have good beer on tap, including the Chainbreaker white IPA. They also have a pool table! I will definitely come here again.

My buddy and I decided to try this place on our way up to a Pilots hoops game as the TRoom has gotten old. We were pleasantly surprised. Loved the wood panel interior and the animal heads adorning the walls. Food was solid as were the drinks. The thing keeping this from 5-stars is the high prices. $3 for Rainier draft and $10 for a 1/3 burger without any good toppings is a little ridiculous for any place in Portland. Much less a neighborhood type bar.

This is a great little neighborhood pub, the staff is friendly and easy on the eyes. The ambiance is cute, a bit log cabin-ish...The vibe is pretty mellow and the clientele is diverse and friendly as well. The Barlow got me through the holidays :) I recently went back on the wagon, so I haven't been a while. I miss it though...

I'm so happy that they took over the corner spot. Barlow is a great place for drinks and food. I really enjoy the vibe. The bar staff are wonderful and they play decent music most of the time. It's nice to have a place like this within walking distance from my home.

So far so good. They have huge shoes to fill when it comes to taking over the corner spot. Donna was about as sweet a person as there ever was. I miss her and her bar but am looking forward to spending time at the Barlow too! Good luck.

We're thrilled to have this new establishment in the neighborhood - much, much better than when it was the Corner Spot. We crave their chicken and waffles, and only wish they opened up a little earlier for a weekend breakfast out. Well done, Barlow!
