Great place to grab a drink and just hang out. We usually go here during happy hour, when well drinks are $2.50 (AWESOME). Drinks are still pretty cheap during regular hours ($4). It's even better that the bartenders make the drinks really stiff. I usually get just two drinks and I am GONE after that (the good (or bad?) thing about being lightweight.) ALSO, the bartenders in this place are awesome and hilarious. They actually look like they're enjoying what they're doing and like to joke around and talk to people. The last time we were there, the bartender referred to my boyfriend as the "viagra guy" the whole night because she misread the bank name on his card (Niagra). Embarrassing for my boyfriend, but HILARIOUS to me. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars is that I haven't tried their food yet. I like that they have a lot of vegetarian options though, so I might be trying their food soon. I'm glad to have discovered this place. Definitely going to be one of our regular hangout places!

Gluten-Free Options: Heck yes! Sammies are on Udi's bread, and they have several tasty gf options available. Vegan Options: Yep! Bathrooms: Non-gendered single occupancy The Bare Bones Bar is my new favorite late-night place. Getting gluten-free food past ten pm in this town is challenging, and getting it with a tasty drink is almost impossible. Not so at the Bare Bones Bar. They offer a full menu until 9 pm, but even their "bar food" is tasty and filling, with none of the usual fried-till-dead suspects. I highly recommend the banana peanut butter bacon (bpbb?) sandwich on gluten free bread; couple it with an adult beverage from the slurpie machine, and you've got a tasty guilty pleasure that'll keep you coming back for more.

Good drink specials and sandwiches rock. Veronica, Dave and Alyna are great behind the bar, very friendly and attentive. Gotta love the slushie margaritas. Super comfortable atmosphere that has made it hard not to keep going back.

The food is different from typical bar fare, which was nice and quite tasty. Bartender was really pleasant and service was good. Will definitely return. Just a cool kind of joint to hang out.

My boyfriend and I were walking our dog and decided to stop here and get some drinks and food. We sat at the picnic tables outside, since it was so nice out and we had our dog. I ran in to order some drinks, and even though the place wasn't that busy, the bartender took forever to notice me. He was talking to people at the other end of the bar, not paying attention. Everytime we went in to order more drinks or food, he was doing something else, other than helping costumers, that distracted him from us. Other than the semi-lousy service, the place is pretty cool. I ordered the Tuesday special, two veggie tacos and a tall boy fro $5. The tacos were delicious! My boyfriend got the buffalo chicken sandwich and said it was just ok. He was hoping the chicken would be fried. The drinks are pretty cheap, at $4 a microbrew. Not too bad.

Happy Hour all day Monday! This means: $1 off food (I got the tuna dip with jalepeno chips for 5 dollah) $1 off cocktails $2.50 wells $1 off beer We each had two drinks and split the dip for $15. I'm a happy camper. Cool place. Sopranos pinball. Good jukebox. Lots of windows. Two doors. Small kitchen. Breakfast sandwiches served all the time, starting at $4. My only gripe is that it isn't walk-able from my place. Well, it is. I'm just lazy.

I didn't spend too much time inside, but I do know that I got a shot of Crown Royal and a beer for $8. Good prices. The bartender was nice and prepared my drinks quickly. There is outside seating with umbrellas to keep my pale skin from burning to a crisp, so that was cool. I would choose this bar again if I'm in the area.

Came here to get some work done midday, food and coffee is decent but the vibe is, in my opinion, way off base for a daytime cafe. The music is loud and super aggressive. Have to step out to take calls. Not a workplace.

This is my favorite neighborhood bar - and it's a neighborhood full of bars. Prices are good, the drinks are good. The staff is awesome. I just realized 2 amazing things after coming here for the past year..... 1. their food is AMAZING. Seriously. Everything I've had has been super tasty. 2. Wednesday night bingo. Seriously, in a neighborhood crowded with bars, give this place a shot.

Wow. I am sad to read all the scathing reviews here on Yelp...it certainly makes me glad that I didn't look this place up before going because I probably would've passed it on! We came here at the recommendation of my cousin looking for a cool, relaxed bar where we could all catch up. The bartender that served us was really nice and patient. She was also really attentive, asking us if we wanted another round when we finished our drinks. Granted, the place wasn't very busy and it was quite late (maybe 10PM or later?). Now, someone else mentioned the blood orange & jalapeno margarita. Yes, do try it. It's delicious. The bartender recommended no salt and I would have to agree. I think the drink was great on its own. It would be cool to do maybe raw sugar or a spicy salt. Our group also tried the "Peppy Patty" aka hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps. Our bartender graciously offered the iced version, seeing that PDX was experiencing some warmer weather. Overall, a really cool bar to just come and hang out. I would definitely come again to try more cocktails and maybe the food! One more thing... Big. Buck. Hunter. In HD!

My husband and I stopped here for a cocktail before having dinner across the street @ Genoa, as their bar wasn't open yet. I was a little skeptical beforehand, but there really wasn't anywhere else to go and it was cold outside. The atmosphere was very warm, inviting and clean - not the dive I thought it would be at all. We only had one drink each - but they were very good and reasonably priced. The place just had a very nice ambiance about it. We would definitely stop in again if we were in the area.

Decent atmosphere, they had some DJs spinning casually the night I went in. Tried the chicken sandwich, it was something like $9. It was ok, but not really in the $9 price range. However, they serve food late, so you pay for that I suppose. The bouncer was a little rude because I had an out-of-state ID, but not anything to turn me off from the place entirely. Cool spot to stop by for a drink.

This is where I do my pinball training. Theater of Magic is an incredible machine. It is serviced often, usually plays great. The bar itself is impressive, what a beautiful space. The bartenders here are rad at what they do, it's filled with a great cast of characters. They do trivia on Thursdays, dinner and a movie on Sundays. Man the juke is out of control, it's a hit machine. This is the neighborhood hang out, stay classy Belmont.

Bare Bones is probably my favorite bar in all of Portland! One of the first times I came in after I moved into the neighborhood, I had a few too many and ended up leaving with an open tab. Now this had happened to me once before at an establishment downtown, so I knew the drill: I'd probably be looking at a 25% gratuity tacked onto my bill. When I walked in to get my card the next day told the bartender (Lance) that I had mistakenly left my tab open and left my card, he had closed it out with no tip for himself. Between their awesome staff, pinball machines, good music, trivia nights, awesome happy hour, and amazing Frito Pie I can't stay away for very long.

I've waited nearly an entire year to write this review to allow time to reflect. I'm not one to rate something poorly unless I truly feel I've had a bad experience. And, despite time passing, every time I drive past this place I cringe. It has, essentially been the only poor dining experience I've had in Portland, and only one of three in my life. Marcus (who looks a lot like Russell Brand) leaves much to be desired with customer service. If you are not a regular or look like a Hawthorne native, that's the first strike against you. If you patiently wait at the bar to place your order and then when approached, exchange short but sweet polite greetings and move to place your order you'll be stopped mid-sentence, corrected on how you should be speaking and then instructed to start again, strike two. I had the Portabello & Olive Veggie Melt which was two limp pieces of bread with three slices of portabello, maybe a teaspoon of tapanade style olives and the cheese was nowhere to be seen. I should have taken a picture of it because I was frankly shocked as this place had received decent reviews of their food. I would have said something but honestly was afraid of the response I'd get after our initial impression (we didn't need to add a third strike to the experience). The reason I'm giving this place two stars is because of the Blood Orange and Jalapeno Margarita and the gal working the patio area (who was very pleasant and likable). I like an unusual cocktail and this one proved to be just that. It tasted fresh and hit the spot on the rather warm summer day when I visited and the service on the patio was a welcomed comparison to what we'd experienced inside. Upon leaving, we thought we'd be polite and bus our own tables. There we were, standing at the end of the bar with dirty dishes in hand. Lance, upon seeing us, walked to the far end of the bar and proceeded to check in with each and every person sitting at the bar (shooting the sh*t for sure and about half way through, at one point, when he dropped a glass that broke, he kicked it like a soccer ball to the other end of the bar spraying broken glass on the floor along the way). It was a good 10 minutes before he got to us to take the dishes and allow us to close out our check. First the first time in two years of dating, I saw my bf actually get angry in a social/public setting. To put it best, I turn to Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia. "[But] as we find with many of the characters on the show, sometimes the things that claim to be the most inclusive have all these esoteric rules to follow -- in order to be part of that group -- that it becomes so alienating or excluding." I think I have a great idea for a sketch for Season 4 of Portlandia.

Place is awesome good beer and drinks they have five pinball tables Dr.who, Creature From The Black Lagoon, tron, Star Trek (new) and monster bash. They also have Big Buck HD. Out side seats with tables no drinks outside after 10pm so its not to Loud for the houses around.

Not a fan. There is no waitstaff in a good sized place, the menu left a lot to be desired; no thanks.

My experiences here have generally been pretty good but I think after the last visit I might never choose to return. I stopped by about three weeks ago to attempt to show a buddy a cool bar with pinball, unfortunately the bartender saw fit to completely ignore us and serve people that she either believed needed a drink more or she thought fit into the "scene" better even though we were waiting far longer. After a good 5 or so minutes of not even getting so much as an acknowledgement of being present with a twenty dollar bill in my hand I suggested we try it another time and go down the street to The Conquistador yelp.com/biz/the-conquis… as I've never had an issue getting service there and they also have stiff drinks, great food and nice pinball machines.

After "bar hopping" trying to find a place that was semi-empty last night my friend and I wound up at Bare Bones. The drinks were just gross, and the bartender mixed my friend her drink, stuck his finger on top of the straw, pulled it out and took a taste and then said, "tasty!" When I walked up to order, the 40 something hipster wanna-be walked away from me to the end of the bar and proceeded to talk to his drunk friend about the music he had chosen on the Jukebox for a solid 5 minutes. My drink had more midori sour in it than anything else and not even the cigarette I had could cover the nasty that was still lingering. Bypass this bar Portland. There are other, much better options out there.

Totally solid. I had a tasty, large, reasonably priced cocktail. It was a bit heavy-handed on the St Germain, but, you know, there's worse things to be heavy-handed on. The thoughtful cocktails on their list all start with local spirits and run in the super reasonable $6-7 range. Sandwiches are offered on gluten-free bread, and they're using Udi's, which is the only GF bread worth making a sandwich out of. They even made me essentially 3 half sandwiches, as the GF bread does run a bit on the smaller side. Nice. touch. It was staggeringly loud when my buddy and I arrived, even though there were only a few people there. It was the jukebox. We shouted back and forth across the table for a song or two before one of the patrons at the bar headed out the door and the bartender came over and turned the tunes down. We thanked her and she explained that the other patron that had just exited just really wanted to rock out when she was the only one there a bit earlier. I can respect that. It's a bit dark, but in an inviting sort of way. The server was really nice and totally attentive. Sammich hit the spot. Only odd/off thing that I noticed was that there's no HH here, in spite of the fact that there's HH offered from 3-6 at the adjoining Cafe. I'd like to see the same HH grub and drink specials offered in the bar as well.

I really liked the idea of this bar more than the actual bar itself. The bartender was okay friendly, but not the funniest or most charismatic I've ever met. Everyone kind of kept to themselves at this bar instead of socializing with each other, which was really my biggest reason for not liking this spot. They had a DJ going & the beats were pretty good. It was an average kind of a bar, but doubt I'd go back.

You can expect the same great food that you find at their cafe. (Maybe not the exact same items but of similar quality.) A build-your-own breakfast sandwich option available all hours, Great happy hour and late night eat options too like sliders (chicken curry and pulled pork), Albacore deviled eggs, and Frito pie along with great sandwiches. To drink there are a variety of bottled/cans beers and a few on tap. I think their house cocktails are where its at. Every one I have tried so far has been stellar, notably the "Yvonne". The bar itself is made up of a row of booths (i heart booths); some tables, a great second set of bar stools & bartop/counter for watching the television - perfect for games. There is ample outdoor seating great for enjoying Belmont in the summer. Overall this is a neighborhood place. A friendly gathering spot. Very comfortable. Had I not moved out of the neighborhood I would be here most days. Seriously. A must-see for anyone in the neighborhood. It's a Belmont gem.

This bar has awesomely unexpected FANTASTIC food! Their happy hour is super reasonable and covers all foodie's needs. I had a $4 hh mixed greens salad and the $6 albacore tuna deviled eggs. The greens salad well spiced nuts, wasn't heavy on the dressing and reasonable with the cheese! A completely perfect NW salad, if you ask me. The Deviled Eggs couldn't have been more perfect. I _know_ Deviled Eggs! You get four pieces which is about right as you won't want to share this plate! My Bartender was friendly (even though it was a hot September night and the internet was down). I think I might stop by tonight to start my happy hour date night off right!

Since both my girlfriend and I live in the neighborhood, we tend not to go out for stuff we could make at home, unless we're in another part of town, adventuring, with friends, etc. And at first glance, Bare Bones seems to be, well, Bare Bones enough that we could make whatever was served on our own. However, a 50% off Merc Perk convinced me to give the place a shot anyway. Wow. Okay, most of what's on the menu LOOKS pretty straightforward, but everything I've had has some sort of magic in it. The one thing I've never seen before: I got a- dangit, forget the name- coconut milk with pepper infused rum. It was amazing! Just enough spice to make you aware, but not overpower the thing. Heather got a hot toddy, and the bartender suggested trying it with Brandy instead of Bourbon...good suggestion! The Frito pie was made with tasty vegan chili and was impressive, and my "grilled cheese" was more of a meal with greens, mushrooms, and other delights. The bartender herself was a delight. Heather was under the impression the bartender was someone I knew by the perfect combination of authentic friendliness, service, and a wee bit of smartassedness. (As opposed to the forced insincere politeness at chains, for instance) Added bonus= both the bar and cafe next door have great art. Downsides= TV if you don't want the distraction, the website Google says is theirs doesn't work.

The best new bar in Portland. A place for everyone. Great cocktail menu with a great food menu to back it up. Not to mention the best and prettiest bartenders around. One would be wise to make a visit to the BBB.

It's not as divey as the Vern, nor as swank as the other places near by. This place fills a void in the neighborhood. . . Great atmosphere - Good jukebox, no hipsters, big windows. Perfect light levels. Dark enough for some privacy in the booths, but bright enough to do a crossword puzzle. Friendly and capable staff. And, as mentioned before by other reviewers, both the male and the female bartender are easy on the eyes. Who doesn't like that? How can they make it better? Put Old Crow in the well, get more beer taps, get tall boys, and focus on some properly made classics in the cocktail list. Get some fucking pinball! If they DO ONE THING THAT NOBODY ELSE DOES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD it will become a very busy bar. Like what? I haven't done the research, as it isn't my place, but I'll list a few well tested suggestions - - An EXTENSIVE Belgium beer selection (or German, Czech, Finnish, African, whatever. . .) Pick one. - A GOOD sized and SOLID wine list. No, "red or white only" - A BIG selection of appertif/digestif/amaro with the knowledge to serve it. - House made infusions, bitters, grenadine, and fresh squeeze mixers. etc. . .

What a great Vegan friendly find! I stopped in to their cafe counterpart next door to use the free wifi with a friend of mine as we apartment search, and get a hot toddy while we were at it. They were above par with tea and cinnamon and who knows what else. Before I could order, or even sit down, however, the smell of something delicious was wafting from the kitchen. I've known this place to be somewhere I'd wanted to try from a coffee pop in when I saw the gluten free bread (UDI's! Best option by far) with peanut butter and bananas (still need to try that), but did not expect to find that the delicious smell of homemade chili wafting out to me was not only vegetarian, but vegan, and served on a vegan frito pie! Later, when my boyfriend and I met up at the actual bar next door, I ordered this delight, complete w/ lime creamy sauce. SO. AMAZING. I think I did end up w/ cheese, so order w/o for the complete vegan-ness. And get a drink!! The 3 toddys I had were all amazing. The one at the actual bar ($1 off Happy Hour!) was to die for, and had real fresh grated ginger. Very Impressed. Service was wonderful too! Will be going back. Try it! :)

this is the 2nd yelp page for the bar? ok. I'm upping my review by one star because I love the thai hot monkey vodka drink so much. Good selection of pinball and jukebox songs. Awesome bare bones food. Great staff. Sexy customers. Go to the bar.

I love This bar, just a wonderful step out my front door and I am here. great food (bare bones cafe) and great drinks. Not the cheapest in town, but for fun and atmosphere with a severe lack of douches, you should check it out.

Went back, explored the selections on the jukebox, top drawer, for sure. They're up to four taps. One of those is PBR, which seems to me like a little bit of a waste of a tap considering how few they have (expanding to beyond four, as the bartender explained, would require some significant re-engineering of the bar), and that they've already got PBR in bottles... Pinball machine's been moved, a few more folks in the place. Still four stars, though I'd give 'em four and a half if I could. I like Howard L's suggestions, any one of those might get 'em the fifth. Very solid place. I have a buddy who lives in the neighborhood, I could see this becoming a regular haunt.

Follow up review. Love this place, great food and drinks, but seriously Bare Bones, a Saturday night an all you have on staff is one bartender and a cook? No server? I really could go on, but I'm going to hope this was a fluke.
