This is a locally owned and operated grocery store. It's quite clean and nice. In terms of type and quality of selections, I would say it's closer to Safeway than Whole Foods. On a rating scale where New Seasons would be a five for me, I give these guys a three. Just as with most other big grocery chain stores, there is an organic section, meat section, and a Starbucks inside the store run by the store, as well as ready-made foods section. The organic fruit selection is very limited, and produce quality somewhat spotty. Whereas I come out of New Seasons thinking it's a happy happy place, I get no such warm and fuzzies after shopping here.

I mostly like this place, and have known they sell firewood, as it's usually stacked up near the entrance. I thought of them since it's time to start using my fireplace, so I called them up to double check they had firewood.. I was kindly told the amounts available, but a half rack was a bit too much for me. Just to be certain, I asked if they can be split and the guy was no longer kind. I wonder if they're asked that all the time and are sick of it. This guy sure was. A half rack won't fit in my small car and a bundle is $5.97, which is 50% higher than many places. Easy decision.

I don't usually like to share information like this with other people, because I'm greedy about free alcohol. But today... for you... I have special tip. Just lean in... closer... a little closer... yeah, ok, that's good. So. This very average, nicer-part-of-town grocery store, two or three times a year, hosts MASSIVE wine tastings. I'm talking at least 15-20 tables of wine vendors, and another bunch of food vendors (they're ok. good for soaking up the H2O2). For FREE. FREE, people! Literally, you show your id when you walk in, and they give you a glass. Then you start meandering your way through the deli, and around the back, past the seafood, and meat, and eventually dairy. Drinking the entire time. And it's not even a well-guarded secret. There are multitudes of peope there, specifically to just walk around and drink. No cart. No groceries. Just hangin out, drinking. And chatting. And laughing. I've now done this twice - the first of which was entirely accidental. The hubsy and I had popped in with the boys - BIG MISTAKE. BIG! (Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman, the expensive boutique where the snooty ladies had refused to help her the day before, and she returns the next day with her fancy new outfit and loads of shopping bags and lets them know... you remember right? I'm not just talkin' to myself over here? THAT kind of BIG mistake) - kids have no place at wine tastings. OMG, plus I was pushing around that ridonkulous cart with the gigantic police car attachment, and they were trying to climb out every time I'd stop to get a sip of something new. Finally, I sacrificed myself and took the kids to the car so hubsy could drink and err'body in the store get tipsy. Seriously though, plan ahead, get a sitter. Many people do this. I asked them. And you are correct - I am the greatest wife ever. ALSO - Bales hosts a SEATED wine tasting right there at the tables in the deli, once a month, with catered food parings - $20 a person. (On a different night than the big tasting.) Hubs and I have done this twice also, and both times it was 10 Oregon Pinots, paired with scrumptious food. The sommelier has all the bottles covered, and you get a numbered sheet for observations and guesses. With excited tipsy exclamations from charming old people, when the reveals are made at the end. This thing is also packed and you have to make a reservation. Do it. Oh, yeah, and it's a grocery store with overpriced stuff, a convenient post office, blah blah blah, really great wine selection, etc., who cares. Go drink wine.

staff not very helpful, asked a check out person if they could order a special item I just took off the shelf and got the answer that they have a process of doing so; even as I said that that didn't work the last time when I was asking for the item I was kind of dismissed. I would have expected a response such as " certainly, I will write it down right away". I also found moldy items on one or more occasion which was taken back without a problem, but a pricey store like this should pay more attention. I only go there if I absolutely have no other choice

It seems I spend a great deal of time at the supermarket these days because I shop for what I need on a daily basis and avoid stocking my shelves. In light of this fact I give credence to grocery stores that are not only conscious of product offerings and competitive prices, but that also have put some thought into the layout and design of the store. In this regard, Bales Thrift-way on Cornell Rd. has done an exceptional job. It actually feels like a grocery market as opposed to a cookie cutter grocery chain. There is a unique feel to this location that is welcoming and that says "stay for a while"! As well, it is always nice when grocery stores have some basic "bulk foods" section for those staples (rice, beans, oats) that can be unnecessarily expensive when purchased pre-packaged, and Bales has this. The only drawback to this location, and I am not sure if all of the Bales are like this, is that they label unit pricing in measurements of ounces instead of pounds, which does not seem standard since most of the grocery stores that I shop at do unit pricing by the pound. I find this confusing because I need to convert units to pounds to compare prices to other grocery stores. Also, they don't have a very good selection of nuts. Besides that, their produce department has very competitive prices and they have a very large diary section which is nice. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I recommend shopping here if you want to try something new and inviting.

We get all our cakes from bales and they are amazing!!! They just did my wedding cake and it was fantastic! They were even able to deliver last minute :)

The bakery is sub-par, with the same stuff presented every week, and very limited selection. Their carrot cake has some sort of orange peel filling, and their Boston creme pie is not correct, with thick fudge frosting on top. Produce selection is decent, but spoils quickly. The meat department is the only highlight. Winos will love the ever expanding selection of expensive bottles. The checkers are, on the whole, slightly off to bizarre, with red-neck right-wing hate-filled opinions on full display. Skip this place for better prices (and produce) at Safeway down the street, or the new Market of Choice (no more expensive) for a truly pleasant experience complete with an incredible bakery.

I really want to like this place and I do still shop there but this is the 4th time in 3 years that I've purchased something only to notice that the expiration date is past due after I got home. Today is 12/18 and the package on the chips I bought is 12/10. Now I know it's just a bag of chips, but again, this is not the first time this has happened and I have to wonder about other things like produce and meat and how far they will push the dates on those things. What they do right: beer, wine and they are hardly ever busy. What I won't touch: meat, fish and anything made in their deli. Sorry to say, but I can't wait until Market of Choice opens up so I don't have to drive to New Seasons for fresh, organic deli foods. And...maybe they will pay more attention to what's on their shelves and the expiration dates.

This is mostly a review for the post office located in the store. First off, they carry the post office official logo so one would be inclined to think they are an official post office location. They are not, they are nothing more than a strip mall mail store, and expect to pay 20% more on rates here than you would at an actual post office location. On top of that, they don't accept credit or debit cards, they are cash only (hello, welcome to 2014??), they are not overly helpful, and if you need to send something international, you have to preprint all of your forms online and bring them because "they don't do that". Do yourself a favor and drive to a real post office. As for the store itself, their selection is good (especially the wine selection) but their prices on food items is very high. Even though I live in the area, unless I am in a pinch, I avoid this place. There are better options in the area.

Review a supermarket?! Well, this particular one deserves major kudos. Not only do they support local produce and brands, I'm always thrilled with their selection of British products that are almost impossible to find stateside. Love shopping here!

I recently visited this location to grab my daily Starbucks. My senses were instantly aroused the moment I walked in. It's a very festive location. Super clean and orderly. I walked up to get my Starbucks. I needed to re-load my Starbucks card via my mobile app. Apparently their computer system is a little dated. So, the Barista had to do it all manually. I wasn't at all bothered, because she was super great and friendly about it! The best part is my Latte was perfection!!!! I'll be back!

This place has the best cakes. Every month, my company will gets cakes or pies to celebrate everyone's birthday for that month. You should try the Almond Roca cake. It is so good and is one of the favorites at work. We don't go anywhere else for cake and although I haven't set foot in this particular store myself, for the cakes alone, I am a fan.

Making a review on a supermarket it's kind of boring. But this is the 2nd supermarket review I'm making, and there has to be something special about this particular Thriftway branch. What's special is that it has a Post Office and they have the largest gluten free products I've seen in any supermarket. In the meat section I can get my favourite locally made sausages made by Fetzer's (smoked bratwurst and beer), and this is the only supermarket that sells Delmonico steak (quite pricy but definitely worth it).

I really wish I could give them more, but as a regular (read captive) customer, I just can't. About the only thing consistent at Bales is the staff - they garner most of the stars they get from me. A mostly friendly bunch, they do their best. Where Bales does well is their beer and wine selection. Their buyer has been there for awhile and is quite helpful - if you ask. Bale's biggest problem is that they are caught in between trying to be a neighborhood market, but also trying to capitalize on a clientele that would rather shop at a New Seasons if it were as convenient. I think Bales holds on to far too much product because perhaps they spent too much money on some stuff and to get their money back (?). Check your expiry dates!! And watch the freshness of their produce. Rotten fruits and veggies are the intermixed here with regularity. Then there is the unforgivable. I will no longer purchase meat directly from their meat counter. There is a pattern of incompetency with the Bales meat dept employees both past and present for years now. I've had a (still current as of this writing)meat dept employee go directly from mopping the floor to plucking product from the meat case. If that weren't e enough,I had a past meat dept employee guy go from the meat grinder to the bacon case, presenting me with smeared grown beef both on the outside of the paper package and even better - on inside when opened it up at home. Grocery store options in Cedar Mill are pathetic. The Peterkort Albertson's is just a depressing ghost town, and the Safeway down the road is a victim of its own success - by default - far too many customers in a small market eirg overstocked aisles. In the 10 years I've shopped at Bales, I've seen them struggle with trying to find their niche. There allegedly will be a new market opening up in the Timberland development nearby. It's purported to be a regional chain carrying quality product. No announcement yet who it may be, but Bales better get their act together soon.

My 65 year old mother-in-law went into the store tonight to buy a 38.00 bottle of wine. She was told by the cashier that she appeared drunk and she would not sell her the wine. The problem I have is that my mother-in-law had no alcohol that day. None, nada, nothing! When she relayed the story to me I was surprised the manager didn't need to be informed. We conferenced called the manager on duty, Alex, and relayed the story to him. He said the cashiers have a good track record and don't always get it right. When I told him she wasn't buying a bottle of 2 buck chuck from Trader Joes he proceeded to tell me that he didn't have to take my profanity and hung up on us. Sigh! Customer service very poor! (I didn't know Trader Joes was a swear word.......hehe)

I love the local store, as it has so much to offer from simple necessities to hard to find items. It offers a fresh bakery, fresh flowers I can pick up at any time, and a Starbucks right by the door, so you can grab and shop. There's even a post office right inside if you need to pack and send something before you shop. The wine and beer selection is fantastic, and I mark my calendar and never miss the wine and food event they hold a couple times a year. I think it's one of my most looked forward to Cedar Mill events. The employees are always friendly, and they are so recognizable. I'm not sure they ever have turnover. It makes it nice to always see the same familiar faces. My only suggestion for improvements, is the floor plan. I know they recently remodeled, and it looks beautiful inside, but the freezer area feels a little old school. They have what feels to be circa 1970 wall to wall freezer and fridge window doors, and then they have a ton of the freezer open air reach-ins which feels unnecessary at a time we are all trying to do our part in conserving space and energy. It would also be nice if there was more natural light and a sit down area for the deli and Starbucks. Overall, I feel Bales Thriftway is a great amenity to have in our neighborhood and look forward to continuing to shop here for years to come!

The staff is nice. However, the prices are strange. They are inconsistent, and pretty high. For example, an imported cheese I typically buy from Winco is $2.98 at Bales, it is $5.98. Hmm. Items that are "on sale" don't ring up as "on sale." At least 3 times this has happened, in the early morning, I waited at the cash registers and no one ever came up to help me, so I put my things I intended to buy down on the check out stand and left. Had to get to work. Great to pick up some paper towels in a pinch, but that's about it.

I come here almost every other day because it's so close by. And I've seen the same people working here for the past 10 years. Everyone that works here is friendly, helpful, and very pleasant. They were the first in the area to start carrying Dave's Killer Bread. :) my fave! They're bagels are the best around, and they're bakery is AMAZING. Another good thing about this place is that they don't carry EVERYTHING. Just the best of what you need from a local grocery store. It's annoying to have to run through the entire store, through the hardware section, past the kids' toys, etc. just to find something. And with this store, you never have to do that. You'll know what I mean once you visit. :)

clean store, wide isle's local selections. You might pay a few cents more if your not watching for deals, but it's well worth it to not have to stop at the other nearby zoo's that double as grocery stores. The donuts are f...ing delicious! absolutely no reason to waste your time driving to voodoo, Krispy kreme, or any other overpriced joint. The fritters are second to none...huge, fresh, apple, blueberry, strawberry etc. do not miss these...

Wow, Bale's Thriftway is EXPENSIVE on all their food, milk, chease and staple supplies. I hate to explain the obvious, but Safeway that is a block down the road is the local true saver here.

Bale's is one of the many grocery options in my neighborhood. They stand out in my shopping mind as the best in the area. The meat department here stands out with custom marinated cuts and origional options. They smoke meats in house and always have a great selection of smoked turkey and cured meats. There are some unique food offerings here that the typical chain stores don't have, making it easy to try new things. Good grocery store, prices may be a little higher than some of the other spots but well worth it for the service and variety.

Bales Thriftway made our wedding cake and it was absolutely perfect! We had to give them a picture that was somewhat blurry because we found it on the internet and could enlarge it only so much. They copied that cake to perfection, it was stunning! Not only that, the cake tasted great and we got a ton of compliments on how good it was.

I've lived within walking distance of Bales for almost two years now. It is a big store with a Starbucks and a full Post Office inside of it. It is a mid step store... now what do I mean by that? Well, it is nicer, and pricier than Albertsons, and especially pricier than Winco, but it isn't as fancy pants as Whole Foods or Zupans. It is a little more money that the cheap stores, but they offer a more pleasant shopping experience. Nice wine selection and wine events. Nice little seating area next to the Starbucks, deli and meat shop are above par. Often have very good deals on produce. Unfortunately with three young children I can't do the majority of my grocery shopping here. For that I go to Winco, but for quick hit trips this store is great. Recently added a new driveway in the back for easier access to surrounding neighborhoods.

This is definitely the best grocery store in the area. In a part of town dominated by chain stores (e.g. Safeway and QFC and Albertsons) not only is it a great independent(ish) store, but they do great events like the holiday food and wine shows. The wine steward is incredible... full of information and willing to order just about anything you can imagine. The selection of wines rivals specialty stores and far eclipses other grocery stores. The deli is good, but you'll pay a premium for better quality meats. Great produce; very fresh and wide selection, particularly esoteric veggies. The meat quality has always been very very good, both pre-packaged and from the counter. They smoke meat in house, so try the pork chops and brisket... they both rock. Oh, and there's a full blown post office right there, so convenient as hell.

This place had a wine tasting event that was free and open to the public and consisted of MASSIVE amounts of alcohol. Simply show your ID and you get a glass. In a grocery store!? Yeah, it's crazy. But it happened, and I hear it happens perhaps regularly -- I tried to do some internet research but came up with nothing. Does anyone in the Yelp world know more about this?

    (5)
  • Virginia B.

They have a wine tasting every Friday afternoon, and occasional larger tasting events with food samples and such. Very supportive of community groups and good causes. Check out their Saturday mid-day barbecue out front -- all the money goes to a good cause like the animal shelter or the Grange.

Most grocery stores have a free cookie for the kids... Bales Thriftway gives kids the choice of a free balloon, cookie, or apple. Love that the kids can have a free healthy snack while we shop the isles.

Great selection, very helpful staff who appear to actually want to be there. They have their own smokehouse and have amazing smoked seafood. Extremely helpful in the deli and cheese department and have helped me put together stellar snack combos and gifts on multiple occasions. Best grocery store in the area by far!!!!

I've shopped at this store for years. While the grocery prices are high... THEIR nursery plants are VERY reasonably priced, healthy, simply beautiful. I always fill my planters with their summer flowers. :) Thank you Bales for having a great selection of spring/summer plants! Oh, and their cakes and donuts are very tasty.

If the local New Seasons and local Albertsons got together the resulting prodigy might turn out to be something like Bales Thriftway. Bales doesn't supply as many organic options as I would like, certainly not as many as New Seasons, but seemingly more than conventional grocery stores. They have a good stock of organic produce and dairy, but very limited options in other grocery items, such as nuts. The organic produce seems to be much more expensive than other options in the area. I noticed that a large tub of organic spinach was $7.99 here, while the same one is only $3.99 at Costco. They participate in the Chinook book and conveniently place small signs by items in the store that have an associated mobile Chinook Book coupon. Good prices on plants. While I was there I saw medium sized annuals for $1.50. The staff is generally very friendly. Starbucks location inside.

Nice place, everything is clean and organized. Employees are friendly and they offer a large variety of grocery items. It's like a local New Seasons but better. They have a large variety of meats, veggies and fruit. They even have a large variety of ice cream!! I love coming here just to see what new thing they have.

I've lived in Cedar Mill for years- Bales was always a neighborhood staple. They are now quite expensive without the cache of a New Seasons or Whole Foods. The bakery and meat and seafood counters are good but pricy. The outdoor nursery stock varies in quality. I would shop there more if the prices were no in line with the competition down the street.
