I stepped off the bus mall and into 400 Cafe looking for something simple: a club sandwich. Yep, turkey and bacon on three layers of toasted whole wheat bread. I thought 400 Cafe would be a good bet for this since, as they advertise, they roast their turkey fresh everyday. The atmosphere would best be described as "no atmosphere." Mid-level managers in dress shirts and ties sat at their individual tables under the fluorescent lighting and ate lunches with singular purpose. The nice couple who run the place busily were preparing lunches behind the counter. And yes, turkey club was on the menu. Somehow I found the scene comforting, like it was from a decade gone by, so I ordered my club sandwich as a $8.95 'box lunch' (i.e., with chips, drink and cookie) to dine in. I'd brought along a business magazine to peruse so I figured I could blend in with the middle management crew. The sandwich I received was fresh, as advertised, with succulent turkey breast and bread that seemed to have been baked that morning. But the bread was not tri-level, nor toasted and the bacon was scant, so I didn't quite get my jones fulfilled. And the turkey needed a bit of salt, which is way better and more easily remedied than being over-salted as is so often the case with restaurant fowl. The cookie was small and not really special but it too seemed to be freshly baked that day. The fountain beverage selection was minimal but if you don't opt for the box lunch you could avail yourself of a huge cooler of other beverages, including several kombuchas. I'd go back for a turkey sandwich, but for a bonafide club I guess I need to keep moving down the road.

Before there were downtown food carts, there were lunch spots like this. The way to think of it is a food cart with inside seating merged with a convenience store. A food cart in a convenience store? One wall is a cooler with drinks (and hard boiled eggs?), there are racks with candy (candy?), everything a hungry office worker might need, with no intruding atmosphere, romance or design. For downtown workers in the neighborhood it serves breakfast: eggs, pancakes, breakfast burito, breakfast sandwiches, bagels. Nothing fancy. Lunch has pretty normal meat sandwiches, soup. But the house specialty is fresh roasted turkey. Turkey sandwich, turkey salad, turkey and gravy open faced sandwiches, turkey caesar wrap, teriyaki turkey bento, turkey with BBQ sauce. And Thanksgiving dinner leftover lunch: turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy and cranberry sauce, for $6. So when you are in the mood for turkey comfort food in a dry spot, out of the rain, or for take out, this might be the place! They have real plates for eating in, but if they run out, they will serve you in a take out container. Open 6AM-5PM Monday through Friday. ATM on site, Visa/MC for orders over $5.

Like the guy below said, there are few options for a quick breakfast downtown, Brunchbox, Micky Ds or a burrito. That's about it. I was running late and needed water, juice and something for breakfast. I popped in here to see what they had to offer, several kinds of egg + bread + meat options. I chose the "English Delight" which was an English muffin with egg, cheese and ham. The 'cook' cracked and egg in a little plastic bowl whisked it a few times with a fork and popped it in the Nukebox. I couldn't look at the rest of the assembly. I was afraid I might lose my appetite. I headed over to the cooler, picked up a litre of water and searched around for some sort of juice. 8 oz. bottle of orange juice $2.95, litre of generic bottled water $2.75, convenience store prices. The Egg McDelight was another $3. Wow, almost $10 for breakfast. I'm definitely getting up earlier and making my own. Service was minimal. Not rude but far from friendly. They obviously know they don't have much competition. The bottom line: Service: ** Short, minimal customer service. Food: ** Micronuked fast food clone Price: * Way too much for what you get Ambiance: Not rated, ordered to go. 1.6 round to 2.

As many food carts as there are downtown, there are surprisingly few "grab and go" breakfast options before 8am. I decided to pop in here in the hopes of an unheralded gem. For $3, I watched a breakfast burrito get thrown in a microwave. It tasted exactly like a breakfast burrito that came out of a box and was thrown into a microwave. Their coffee comes out of a DIY push-button machine. 400 cafe is essentially a 7-11 without slurpees.

When I'm in a hurry and starving this is my go-to breakfast spot. Bacon breakfast burrito is the best option (eggs, bacon, hash-browns, and real cheese) only $3. Yes, there are much more delicious places to go for breakfast, but this is fast and hits the spot (beats Starbucks any day). I have always had great customer service. They have a $5 minimum for cards, but it says it everywhere, so of course they are irritated when people are surprised!

Worst experience ever! The owner of Cafe 400 has got to be rudest person I believe I've ever met. Went in the other day with my wife to grab a cup of coffee before work. Didn't realize that you had to spend $5.00 to use your debit card. I told him never mind then. He began berating me as if I were stupid and then told me, and I quote, "this is not a non-profit organization." What that meant, I will never know, but I surely will never be back for any reason and will tell all my friends as well. With social media, customer service this poor will be all over the Internet in minutes.

Turkey sandwiches are the specialty here. I had the plain jane - turkey, lettuce, tomato, mayo, on sourdough. They sliced the turkey up fresh as I ordered it. The sandwich was great. And it was delivered fast. The only thing I would change is the lettuce - they used iceburg, and I think this sandwich would taste better with romaine. The staff was friendly.

Very nice couple runs this place. Food is decent but overpriced. Everything in there is from Costco and the markup is ridiculous. I only go here when I'm in a pinch for a snack because it is closest to my office. Only accepts Visa/MasterCard if purchase is over $5.
