We were walking on 23rd and decided to on pop in. The decor here is AMAZING, I LOVED IT. I had 2 drinks here, the "Portland Rose" and the "Modern 23". I want to write to the magazine "Bon Appetite" and fan girl gush on how amazing the drinks were. For one thing, the names of their bar drinks were very dreamy and creative. I ALMOST ordered based on the names, but then I read 'ohhh whiskey...nope' lol. The drink descriptions were tiny little alcohol based poems that let me feel I could trust my first instinct. I trusted them so well I ordered a 2nd drink. We sat at the bar and our bartender was awkward at first but he was super accommodating. I want to say his name was Corey, or Will or "Dude with large bushy beard who worked Sat 9/12 and forgot to send our fry order to the kitchen" He was great. He clearly had a great relationship with the couple next to us. I felt the bar prices were reasonable. I wish I took more photos of the place. The dress code was very relaxed. If I were ever in Portland again, I would def stop by :)

I've been here several times for cocktails and they're always on point. Today was a different story. Walked in, not busy. No acknowledgement for at least 3 minutes while I stood at the door. Got seated by Gerrin, who was pleasant enough but certainly didn't go out of his way to glance over to see how we're were doing or if we needed anything. I ordered a side caesar to start, which was good. The burger tasted of nothing but hot mustard and the fries were so salty they burned my tongue. I'm a pretty laid back chick. If you look at all of my reviews I'm a very fair person. I told Gerrin about the burger and he came back saying they'd take half off the burger and then asks me if that's ok. Ok? No it's not ok but now I feel awkward and kinda bitchy at this point. We were there for an hour, probably most of which was spent waiting for anyone to just come over to us. Terribly customer service and handling of a customers order that didn't come out the way it should have in the first place. It's obvious they don't care of guest satisfaction.

I was visiting in town for a few days and someone recommended this as a great place to eat. I saw that it had average ratings but still wanted to check it out. The vibe and look of the place is very trend/hipster like. I was greeted by a very bearded man at the front who sat us immediately and was very friendly. He even helped with bringing drinks/appetizers out. The waiter was nice and knowledgable. I tried a couple local beers which were excellent! We had the friend oysters which were ok (very fishy on first bite). We also had the fava beans which were the best!! Flavorful, grilled and had nice little flower petals on it. I had the halibut for a entrée which was a A+ (lightweight and great size for a meal), my mom had the pork chop which she liked but it was the amount of food for 2 people or a 200 lb man. We also had the apple crisp for dessert which was the perfect end to an evening.

Oh gosh 23 Hoyt, how I want to live here. It's woodsy, rustic elegance is the perfect setting for all things amazing. I've walked by numerous times thinking that 23 Hoyt was out of my league, but all I had to do was walk up to it and ask. The dramatic height and fall of the curtains at the entrance make you feel as if you've arrived. Venturing further in you see the pieces of chopped wood adorn the sill of the windows and the waxed coated candelabras sit high and dramatically along the bar. The restaurant is rather spacious offering up various methods of dining, from table sit down, to the bar, to the luxurious lounge area tucked towards the back. Makes you want to experience this place day or night. The service was on point! Our server was incredibly attentive, relaxed and knowledgable. My friend and I were only able to dine there for brunch but my goodness, no lines, no two hour wait and amazing food? I'll take it! I ordered the steak and eggs while my friend ordered the corned beef hash. The steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, the potatoes were soft inside and crispy on the outside. I had a bite of my friends hash which in one bite had me convinced it was one of the best corned beff hashes I've ever tasted. That one bite consisted of a perfectly cooked, soft potato with an amazing piece of corned beef hash which was generous in size, and the accompaniment of great seasoning. The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed and was so perfectly sweet and refreshing all at once! The cherry on top of this whole experience was checking into 23 Hoyt on Yelp, and seeing the $5 dollars of any $30 bill! It's like getting a present whenever an offer pops up on check-in's!

This place is plain wonderful in both decor and food. It has lovely outdoor seating options and is themed to feel like a forest. The Benedict is my favorite and my mom is a fan of the Bloody Mary so they are great for brunch! Thumbs way up!

While visiting Portland, we ate an early dinner at 23 Hoyt one night. We were with our family (mom and Grandma), and were seated right away. Nice decor inside, the artwork and arrangements throughout the restaurant create an inviting space. We were mulling over the menu and discussing ordering some small plates to share since no one was "entree hungry", and thankfully I jumped on Yelp to look for recommendations, because it was happy hour but no one working there bothered to tell us or offer us a happy hour menu. Annoying. Thankfully we asked and the menus were brought to us, because all of the food was really cheap on the happy hour menu. We got a bunch of small stuff to share. Liked the deviled eggs, they have a little bit of kick to them. The hummus was ok, but seriously, it was $1 on happy hour, so wasn't expecting a lot there. The wedge salad was better than I thought it would be, good dressing but not a lot of cucumber, it was really just a wedge of lettuce. Mom got the chicken liver pate and really enjoyed it. The service was spotty, not awesome. It was sort of crowded, but our server was not to be described as attentive. And I'm still annoyed about not letting us know it was happy hour when we were clearly ordering small plates! Would I go back? Maybe. I wouldn't rush back, but if someone I was with wanted to go there I wouldn't dread it.

Great find. 23 Hoyt is a fantastically located, beautifully appointed restaurant with a very friendly vibe. Enjoyed a cheese plate, pea salad, and steak frites (with an Oregon Pinot). Good food at reasonable prices, and incredibly friendly staff. Wonderful spot on 23rd.

I stopped here for dinner and ordered the hanger steak. The steak was somewhat bland, but the beer was good. In all honesty I ordered a burger to go, found it to be fantastic and half the price or the steak. Go for the burger! You'll save money and be highly entertained

I don't know why I waited so long to try you. The inside decor reminds me of a cross between Irving Street Kitchen with the gray walls and antler decor and St. Jack, with the dripping candelabras. My kind of NW decor. We came here for Sunday happy hour which goes until 6.30 pm. The cocktail I had which was a punch one was quite stiff and two relaxed me immensely at $8 a piece. The burger was a 1/2 lb and they cooked it to medium rare perfection. Caeser salad was split and a nice staple. A few tables line 23rd for outdoor seating.

Came here on a Friday night with no reservation. Arrived at 6:50ish and were told we were "too late" for Happy Hour, which I thought ends at 7pm, which was kind of annoying, since we were seated immediately and could have placed some drink orders. Oh well. We were seated promptly at a table upstairs. I did love the ambiance of this place. Upstairs is a little quieter and more private than downstairs, but our service was still attentive and friendly. I ordered one of their "show off" drinks (or something), which the bartender decides upon each day, $12. My drink had gin, grapefruit, simple syrup, lime, cherry liqueur... mostly I just tasted the gin and grapefruit, which was sad because I had been excited about the cherry flavors. I told my server that I like my drinks a little on the sweeter side, so when he brought me my cocktail, he also brought an little miniature ceramic pitcher of extra simple syrup, which I very much appreciated. My drink was very strong, and I was actually unable to finish it (but I'm a lightweight). My friend got a mint based cocktail that was good and also very strong. She also got a glass of pinot grigio, which she enjoyed. For her appetizer, my friend ordered the fried almonds. These was quite disappointing. First of all, the name is very misleading; the almonds aren't actually fried, but as just lightly warmed. They weren't at all toasty or crunchy, much less browned or fragrant. Secondly, the "lilac sugar and jacobsen sea salt" was barely present. Did the kitchen forget to add some to our bowl? And this was $7. Seriously. For a little bowl of almonds. I'll pass. For my appetizer, I ordered the smoked quail stuffed with sausage, which is a delicious new springtime dish they have on the menu. I enjoyed every single bite. The quail was perfectly cooked, and the sausage was fragrant and delicious. The seasoning was perfect. I think this dish could have actually sufficed for a main course, for someone who wasn't super hungry. For my main course, I ordered a half order of the squid ink pasta. This was fantastic. The pasta was thick and cooked perfectly al dente, and was slightly spicy from what I think was a chili oil. I savored every bite. For her main course, my friend ordered the Alaskan halibut with fiddlehead ferns, morels, and peas. The sauce was delicious, the fish was perfectly cooked, and I loved the spring veggies. The portion was a little bit small, but the dish was well executed. For dessert, we split the doughnut holes with salted caramel sauce. The dish came with 8 warm doughnuts, dusted with cinnamon sugar. The salted caramel was in a little bowl of HEAVEN. I mean the doughnuts were tasty and all, but that sauce... just thinking about it makes me salivate. It was creamy, very caramelized (I hate when the sugar is just barely cooked) Overall, not an enjoyable experience. I was very full after my meal, and so was my friend. I really liked my food, although I think the almonds were a rip off and I was a little bit miffed by the fact that they would not allow us to participate in happy hour. Thanks to the yelp check-in we did get $5 off our bill. Also, the bathrooms upstairs are very clean!

Wonderfully situated on NW 23rd avenue the Hoyt Bar happy hour is just what the doctor ordered on a sunny day. I would suggest the burger and fries, and if feeling frisky go for the Mac and Cheese. The habanero tincture cocktail will take the edge off! Your palate will not be disappointed! I would not suggest dinner due to the higher prices. Be sure to get a seat outside.

We stopped in for brunch yesterday morning (1/18/15). It was quiet and kind of cold inside and were immediately seated by the window next to a TV star who was in deep discussion with a producer. My wife ordered the frittata which was small and over cooked. I had the croque monsieur which was cold (I mean refrigerator cold) on the inside. I desperately wanted to go back into the kitchen and show the cook how to make a real croque monsieur. The Gruyere was not melted at all and béchamel was tasteless. It came with fries that were good but it was all put on a cold plate and with the cool room temperature, the fries were dead in a minute. Not all was lost though. Our server was Jordan S, and despite the other reviews here, we thought he was excellent. We were still hungry so we ordered the doughnuts. They were dense but delicious. They were served with twice as much caramel sauce as we needed leading us to suggest to Jordan that the doughnuts ought to be accompanied with some apple wedges. The tartness of the apple would have been a good foil to the sweet doughnuts and caramel. The receipt had an offer printed on it saying that if we bring the receipt in the next time we come, we'd get $5 off our Saturday brunch. It had an expiration date that passed 17 days ago. The food was 2-star, Jordan was 4-star. Paying attention to details would go a long way for 23 Hoyt. It's surprising that the legendary Bruce Carey owns this place and yet so many things are not quite right (his Zefiro was one of the 5 best restaurants in the history of Portland). This place however, badly needs a manager. Oh, the final bill was $36...which I thought was kind of steep. I know good ingredients are expensive but I didn't see anything on my plate that was quality enough to warrant it.

Do the waiters and waitresses here not know what they are doing? Throughout our dinner, we had horrible service. Bad service is bad service - whatever, I can get over it. But, when I asked what dishes were share friendly, I got a snarky response that "all dishes were large and share-friendly." She couldn't have been more wrong. Whatever. This story doesn't make sense. Long story short. Bad service. Overpriced food. & Random entrees that are CRAZY small. Skip this place & go to another restaurant.

I really do love this place. But it took a few chances before they won me over. The first time I came here, we sat outside and ordered off the happy hour menu. They have a good selection for happy hour, and offer things that aren't on their regular menu. The food was great, but the service -- not so much. Our waiter must've forgotten to put in our food order, and then it seemed as if he was intentionally trying to ignore us. After asking about the food to another waiter, he finally retuned and asked us what we ordered, again. It ended up being about an hour and a half before we got our food. Despite the lousy service, I gave this place another try. We came for dinner on a Friday night, and again, the food was great, but the server wasn't. Although she was very polite, she was not the most attentive. The last time I went was for happy hour, and we sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and attentive, more what I'd expect of the service at a place like this. Despite the hiccups with the service, the food and atmosphere keeps me coming back to this place. Definitely worth checking out.

I am literally writing this review as I sit and wait for our waitress to bring us back our check. (That's how long I've been sitting here waiting) Food was well flavored and would have rated this a 4 star review but our service was ultra sub par. The server checked on us literally maybe twice in the two hours we've been here and it's regular Tuesday night (not a busy Friday night) More waitstaff across the board would help satisfy customer needs in a timely manner

Sunday brunch is one of the best things about the weekend. Sunday brunch at 23 Hoyt is one of my favorite brunches. They don't have bottomless mimosas like some of my other favorite brunch spots, but $2.00 mimosas are a pretty sweet deal. Besides the mimosas, the grub is quite delicious too. I've had the salmon Benedict a couple of times and it was fantastic. I've no complaints about the service either, it's always been friendly and efficient. I do wish they would update the online menu. Online the menu offers fried chicken and waffles but the hard copy menu does not. I went in totally intending to order the fried chicken and waffles so it was rather a letdown to find that was unavailable. Online menu grumble aside, 23 Hoyt serves up a swell Sunday brunch. Oh! There's a Yelp check-in offer as well, $5.00 off your $30.00 order. 2014 - review # 19

Met up with some colleagues for happy hour this past week. 23Hoyt is super cute! I used to walk by this place a lot and think to myself: "Wow that place looks chic, but it's probably expensive". (As most establishments are in the NW23rd neighborhood. I was shocked when we got our bill, for 6 drinks, $30 incl. tip during happy hour. Welp, looks like I found an alternative to Bartini. The ambiance is quite appealing too. The design is very chic, and the restaurant is quiet enough to hold a conversation with the people at your table. Will have to return to try their food! Love it so far though!

Superb!! Very delicate, sophisticated combinations. Each individual flavors burst into a wonderful flavor when combined. Lots of earthy flavors. Very very fresh - just picked from the garden type of fresh. It's a must go. I'm a fan!!

Beautiful restaurant with fun menu and drink list. I'm hoping we were just in on a bad night but the restaurant was only half full and our service was VERY slow and the timing of ordering and serving the appetizers, main dishes and dessert was just off. The food was honestly really great expect for my meal... I ordered the hanger steak and it was served to me with the other main dishes but had obviously been sitting out for a while because it was cold. It was cooked but cold, yuck.

We went here a few moths ago with high hopes, which were quickly dashed. We arrived in the early afternoon, and were the only patrons there, as far as we could tell. We ordered a few drinks, which were ok, but the waitress completely forgot about us after that, as she was sitting at the bar chatting up the bartender. I went up to the bar to order some more drinks while she was in the back doing something. I had to go the the bar a second time for more drinks, and after that we decided to go somewhere where we don't have to work so hard to spend our money. The decor was cool, and the drink ok, but the service was a meltdown.

I have been here many times. Happy Hour, dinner, and the best experience here was being the last party before closing. I have been to restaurants where they made it obvious that they wanted you to leave at closing. Not here. Our server was super nice, and we were treated to a complementary dessert. I infer from this gift that that don't keep day old desserts. Their owner/exec chef is superb, and this building is extraordinary. The mystery for me is when do they ever use the upstairs space? Anyway, if you haven't been, try it out at happy hour. Every guest I've brought here has loved it.

I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the loud techno music. Does not compliment the gear food. The menu changes according to fresh ingredients availability. I had grilled chicken with corn ragu, arugula pesto cherry tomatoes and mushrooms. The bruschetta with peaches and ricotta was excellent. Brandon, our server was a delight. If we lived here, we would be regulars.

I want to give this place 4 stars but I feel like it hasn't eked out that 4th one for me yet. I've been here twice. Both times the food and cocktails were good, but not quite as good as the price would imply. Although right now they have a porkbelly wrapped sausage thing, go and eat it... seriously, that was outstanding. The ambiance is very nice here, low candle lit. I want to like the cocktails but I'm really so-so on the 4 I've tried. And they were out of their eggnog one when we went, boo. I would recommend a reservation and or not going on a weekend. I'm not convinced they have a good system for handling their busy nights. Service was rough, there were people wandering around the restaurant acting like it was a bar (and being disruptive to OUR dinner) with no one routing them back to the waiting area. We had to beg for our check. I will be back though, just probably on a week night.

I ordered the beef brisket hash. Utterly disappointing. Very little meat, stewed to near mush. No hint that the dish had any seasoning whatsoever. Allegedly served with a mustard creme fraise, but I've no idea whether it was tasteless or absent altogether. When the butter on your toast presents more flavor than the entire meal, there seems to be an issue. Waiter was unfamiliar with menu and seemed quite distracted. I visited at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2014.

The Ivy League is very refreshing and it would be excellent on a hot day. The tempura fried green beans and aioli are nothing special but they are fried, so naturally they are tasty. The devil eggs are great but they had too much bacon, which is something that I never thought I would say. The maple old fashioned was not a disappointment in the slightest and I would get it again. As for the chocolate chip cookies...I won't avoid them when I go back, if you catch my drift. Lastly, I appreciate that they honored a $5 off $30 yelp check in deal, it is really cool when places do that.

Visiting from SF and had brunch here. I rarely give 5 stars for service but Brandon was pretty awesome. The food isn't anything special but good, nonetheless. And $2 dollar mimosas served in relatively large glasses?! Even better. The ambiance and decor were on point and it wasn't crowded at all. I'd highly recommend this spot if you're looking for good food, an upscale experience without the long wait or noise.

Sunday brunch is divine! Their eggs Benedict is life changing and their fennel sausage gravy is amazing! The breakfast sandwich is also very delicious! $2 mimosas is a perfect compliment to the amazing food!! I have been here multiple times and I will continue to bring new people here!

Have heard great things, really liked the Christmas atmosphere they'd created here mid December, and I didn't eat, but the food being served around us looked great. With that being said, my gf and I sat down at 5:50pm and ordered two happy hour drinks before we wanted to head to dinner at another restaurant. After about 15 minutes our waitress came by and looked at us puzzlingly asking, "did I get your guys order?" Uhh yes, you did. She then needed to retake our original order. She then came by one more time about 20 minutes later telling us "drinks are coming, I promise!" We didn't have anything on our table at 6:30 when we finally decided to just hop across the street to Rams Head (where I instantly had a beer in my hand after ordering) I'll probably give it a shot another time, but definitely not if I'm planning on hopping in for an easy happy hour drink.

First time in Portland and I specifically researched to find a "foodie" favorite of a restaurant in a ritzy/trendy part of the city. This was it. The decor is modern and elegant. Our table neighbors on each side looked like upper crust doctors or rich business types. The waitress was nice, happy, knowledgeable and provided the perfect amount of service. The food was absolutely delicious from the garlic french fries to the burger with fried egg, chicken plate, and mixed drinks. A gourmet gastropub extraordinaire. Thank you 23 Hoyt for helping make our trip to Portland extremely enjoyable!

23 Hoyt, I'm disappointed. The food was good, but not superb. However, the service was not to my liking and that is where the disappointment comes in. Maybe the glass of wine helped cool my nerves, but I was rather upset to the lack of accommodation they could have done or at least pretended to do. Went to 23 Hoyt in part of Portland Dining Month (PDM), the food looked good to me. And the rest of my party was down for whatever before we had our minds blown at the Cirque Totem show. I believe everyone in our party enjoyed their food, nothing was unique about what we had. PDM Menu: First course - Oxtail bruschetta or vegetable turnover Second course - Butter leaf salad or tomato soup Third course - Braised duck leg or wild mushroom lasagna I understand that the menus are set for PDM and we're not picky eaters. We chose 23 Hoyt because the menu looked delectable and thought some accommodations could have been done to avoid any allergies. But they weren't, our waitress didn't even bat an eyelash to try and see what she can do. My fiance is allergic to dairy - cow's whey, not lactose-intolerant, but allergic where he can go into anaphylaxis. Granted he can have butter since there is minimal amounts of whey in it... We politely asked if there could be any adjustments to the menu especially the oxtail bruschetta and butter leaf salad... This is what we pretty much heard from our server "no, these menus are set and I can't do anything about it." Well, what she could have said is "sure, let me see what I can do" then leave & hover in the kitchen for a bit or actually ask if they could accommodate my fiance. The oxtail bruschetta could have been made without cheese on it, the salad could have had a different dressing, and he could have had the braised duck leg as well. He could have had the sense of PDM with a slight modification because of his allergy, but he didn't. We offered these suggestions to our server she didn't seem to care in the first place. Anyway, he got the steak and it was overly priced for the amount that was served yet it tasted good. But the overall story is that businesses should at least try and see what they can do before blatantly stating there is absolutely nothing they could do.

Stumbled into this place while strolling around on 23rd. It was happy hour and the girlfriend and I decided to stop for some drinks and afternoon munchies. I got the penicillin cocktail which was okay, nothing spectacular. We also ordered the mushroom ragu over polenta and the pulled pork sandwich. The mushroom ragu had pretty decent flavor and the polenta was smooth and creamy. The pulled pork sandwich was a bit different than what I expected. It was less saucy than usual, instead much of the flavor came from the fat which was unexpected and quite tasty. Food portions were definitely on the smaller side though. The ambience is fairly unique and chic. Overall, not a bad place for happy hour.

23rd Hoyt is a safe haven. The bartender, Nick is to drink mastery like Picasso is to works of art. The ambiance, is calming, and the restaurant caters to you like you perhaps are the only one there. Exclusivity at its finest. This gem is a safe haven from the elements, practical jokers, wildlife and most importantly the unwanted. Chef Chris and his creations are equally delightful.

Over the last couple of years I have been to 23 Hoyt probably two dozen times. I've come for brunch, happy hour, dinner, just for drinks, and finally I came for the very last time. The experience here always seems to vary; some servers are great, some are aloof. Sometimes the food is good (never amazing) and sometimes the food is terrible. Really what has always kept me coming back is that I live in the neighborhood and there is never a wait. My final time here was by far my worst experience that I've had at any Bruce Carey restaurant. The bruschetta tasted alright at first, however, it came on a large piece of bread that was not toasted (or not toasted enough) and turned into a soggy mess. It just needed bread that could hold up to the wetness of the dish. The tuna crudo was easily one of the worst plates of tuna that I have tasted. The fish itself was horribly fatty, pale in color, and tasted as if you were biting into a grapefruit covered in lemon. The sauce that came below the fish had even more citrus creating this horribly unbalanced dish that was inedible; just two bites and we pushed the plate away from us. The burger that I ordered medium came out raw and the bacon that came on top of the burger was like chewing on rubber. The food I could probably get over because I have had plenty of decent meals here but the service that we received that night has made me swear off 23 Hoyt for good. I should have seen the red flag when one of the first things out of our servers mouth is that my girl friends dog reminds her of the dog she had with her ex-husband. After our food was dropped off our waitress didn't come back outside to check on us for over twenty minutes. Two plates of food that have hardly been touched and two empty glasses sat in front us on the table and when she finally showed back up she had the audacity to tell me that I should have ordered my burger medium well if I didn't want it to be pink. Excuse me? This burger wasn't pink it was stone cold and raw. Maybe 23 Hoyt cooks it meat slightly under, I know that is common as steak houses and high end restaurants but you have to actually cook a burger if you want to tell me that you cook it under. I like my burgers medium rare and would certainly enjoy the burger if it has come out that way, however, what they served me was blue. I wasn't going to have an argument at the table so I just let her take the plate and asked for the check. After she brought the receipt for us to sign her departing words for me was that next time I should ask to have them help me understand meat temps so that I don't order my food wrong. I think next time I will just go to Jo Bar and skip the raw meat and insulting waitress. If you are venturing to NW Portland for dinner do yourself a favor and check out places down the street like Fireside or Jo Bar. There are many reasons that those restaurants are busy while 23 Hoyt sits half empty on a Thursday night.

I really enjoy this restaurant, as does those that I have taken here! It is a class act and it has never been too busy, which we really do not like to experience! The food and service is good! The intimacy is what really defines this restaurants from so many others! It is a pleasure going here! I (we) highly recommend it!

Went here for Happy Hour last night with 4 friends. We sat outside because it was a nice, warm, end of summer evening. The prices for their food range from $1 - $7. Definitely reasonable. $5 for house wine and $2 off draft beers. I ordered their happy hour burger for $7 and I was pleasantly surprised that it came with fries as well, usually everything is ala carte at places during HH. Our waitress seemed a little annoyed when we would ask her questions, like we were putting her out. That is never a good feeling. She also would disappear for long periods without checking in, and they weren't even that busy. The $5 macaroni and cheese one of my friends ordered was very small. If you order it you definitely need to order another item as well. I split the beet salad with a friend. Wasn't a huge fan, and I like when it comes with some greens, which this one did not. It was also very strange how none of our meals came out at the same time. They were all brought to us at sporadic times, which is annoying when you have to watch all of your friends eating their food while you're starving waiting for yours. The burgers my other friend and I ordered came out dead last... They seem a little disjointed at this establishment. Not a good flow happening. Perhaps they need better communication or something, I don't know. Not the best experience I've had. Probably won't be back anytime soon. I do give them props for having a Happy Hour that goes until 6:30pm though.

I went here for a late-ish dinner last spring and have to say it was fine. Nothing too overwhelming or underwhelming about the decor, servers, ambiance, or food. I'm not sure I'd seek out going back, but certainly wouldn't have an issue with it. While it wasn't particularly busy the night I was there, I did appreciate the noise level and the fact I could talk to the person I was with, without yelling. Pros: * Good wine list * Interesting menu * Minimal noise Cons: * Street parking only

Hoyt 23 is one of my favorite places to go for Happy Hour. They have a great selection to choose from and HH is till 6:30pm. The deviled eggs with bacon bites are delicious and only two bucks during the HH.

23 Hoyt is one of my "go-to" happy-hour places in NW Portland, they have a delicious happy-hour menu with small plates (I love the deviled eggs) and the bartenders make very good drinks (perfect dirty martini). My favorite thing about 23 Hoyt is the ambiance, however, which is more up-scale than you would expect when looking at their affordable prices. White table cloths, water goblets, and cloth napkins on every table make this place really come together. My 4-star rating is only due to the size of the happy hour menu, more choices would be better!

I guess my experience here is a bit different from other recent experiences. Went here for dinner on a Monday night with 2 other people and we all loved it. The food was excellent, the house wine was surprisingly good, the service was attentive, but not overly so, and the ambiance was lovely. We shared 2 appetizers and each got an entree then split the butterscotch pot du creme for dessert. Everything we had was cooked perfectly and just delicious. Some of the best cheesy grits I've ever tasted. Maybe even better than Screen Door (which is hard to do). I am definitely going to come back here again.

The service here is terrible. That's the bottom line. I have given this place 3 tries, one of them I walked out after sitting for 20 minutes with servers walking by me & never acknowledging I existed, while I looked at them with Oliver Twist eyes, hoping for some food & beverage. I live very close by, love the ambiance, the food is decent, but the awful service is such a deal breaker! I am a happy person, easy to deal with, but each time I've been here the host/ess never seems to know what's going on & the server hates life. (I would guess this is probably a leadership issue & it's, perhaps not a great working environment...not just a bad day epidemic.) It's really too bad. I just don't think I can give it another try, especially at the price point & with all the other options in the area. 3 strikes & I'm out!

OMG! Sorry, I forgot to review on my visit back in late September.. We managed to come in for Happy Hour (fabulous menu) and ended up staying for dinner. Chef Carriker's Summer dinner menu embodied the Northwest Farm-to-table cuisine. Portion sizes were large enough for sharing. With the flavors, various preparation styles and presentation so good why not just order several items and share so you can sample something of everything? We shared a beet salad that was "napped" with goat cheese dressing-it wasn't overpowering. My entree was Carlton Farms pork chop served with fragrant grilled peaches and served with a humongous house made pork rind--Hail to pork lovers! Hubby's entree was Cattail Creek leg of lamb with salsa verde. Both pork and lamb was cooked to perfection, flavorful, tender and mouthwatering. We were "stuffed" but tried the Foie-Oreo for dessert. Oh myyy! All I could think about was the fantastic flavors and textures that passed over my palate. with reality-check in mind, it was a good thing I had taken my annual medical check up BEFORE going on our trip!

Three dollars to add mushrooms to an omelette, are you kidding me? This place used to be our favorite brunch spot in Portland. The ingredients were fresh, the menu was creative and the staff were very friendly. Now, the entire staff has turned over, which is not a good sign of management. The menu is now hit and miss in terms of quality. We've began going other places, but received a gift card from a friend. The portions are now mediocre overpriced. They charge $4 for five slices of paper thin pear and call it a "plate". It goes on and on. To charge three dollars to add a couple of mushrooms to an omelette is the nail in the coffin. We'll never come back here.

They have HH here, and this review is based on HH alone. They have a decent beer selection and interesting cocktails, but the food wasn't that great. Some of the HH entries are good. They had ragu with polenta, which is pretty interesting and beets with goat cheese and walnuts. Entrees aren't that great though. There was lamb ragu but it was super startchy and thick, I felt I was eating tomato sludge. Service was okay. Perhaps it was because we were seated out outside, I felt we were ignored.

It was a beautiful day and we were shopping in the district so we decided to pop in for some dinner. Our waiter was busy so someone came over to greet us. We ordered some drinks and an appetizer. Still no waiter. The greeter came by to deliver the drinks and we tried to order our meal but he wanted us to wait for the waiter which was fine. We waited about 15-20 more minutes with no appetizer, then finally were greeted by our waiter and quickly ordered dinner. Our food came with no appetizer. The Hoyt cheeseburger wasn't anything special. It had pickles that were strangely a yellow color with a cardboard kind of texture. It was slightly greasy, but perfectly cooked and on a good potato bun. The fish was really good. Flaky and seared. It was served on some flowers and peas which would have been better if it were some other side. The fries were limp. The fried donuts with caramel were bomb!! That was the best part of the meal.

Stood around for ten+ minutes, no greeting, no eye contact nothing and had an older couple that arrived several minutes after us seated before us .... The service was extremely slow and it wasn't even crowed. Small menu & The waitress informed me they only serve dark meat chicken, which made me wonder.... I only like white meat so I didn't order it. I ordered the cauliflower panna cotta appetizer aka cauliflower jello, soooo gross!!!!! no one at the table liked it. Don't waste your time!

The homemade pork rinds will have you wondering why you even ordered an entree... rather than 3 more orders of pork rinds. The beet soup will melt in your mouth like velvety jewels from the earth. The desserts will ease you into the rest of your evening which will, hopefully, be as picturesque as the Christmas lights that line 23rd. Attentive staff, adventurous chef, nice layout. Make a reservation.

We had to wait maybe 15 minutes for our reserved table because the last group took extra long but we got free champagne as a result! They were very apologetic about the wait but it was worth it. We did the Portland Dining Month 3 course meal for $27 (I think) and it was pretty good! We had a roasted vegetable turnover, a butter lettuce saddle, and a mushroom pasta dish-all of which were very good. We also had caesar salads which were definitely tasty but nothing too remarkable. Additionally we had a Casarecce ragout which was delicious! For desert we had a chocolate brioche bread pudding with a scoop of ice cream on top. Everything was wonderful and the hostess was very welcoming and kind. Our waitress was a bit reserved and cold but was not bad by any means. 23 Hoyt is an excellent place to go for a classier meal without a huge price tag.

Brunch: $12 for a no-meat omelette - you want toast? $2 more. Bacon? $5. Potatoes? Yes - over cooked little squares coated in what tasted like BBQ potato chip dust. And the omelette was just so so. Definitely on the small size. The egg to filling ratio is something to be desired (by an omelette lover like me). Too much thick egg and not enough filling. I want cheese in every bite damn it!! Especially if I'm paying 12 for it!

Circa 4/2014 we arrived here with a mid-sized group for a celebration, about 8-10 people. At first impression, the drinks were decent, apps were fair to middle, and the entrees were decently priced for the area. However, after a painstaking wait through horrible slow service of about 2-3 hours, it came time to conclude our meal. The process of splitting checks 4-5 ways I know can be a very difficult task for someone without a 7th grade education. So, we decided to take this upon ourselves. We told our server exactly how much to place on each card and also had a guest paying in cash. When our server returned, one of the cards had a much larger charge than expected. We paid it, not wanting to cause a scene and honestly just wanting to get out of there after wasting so much of our night on their terrible service. But when we arrived at our next destination, we tallied our bills to discover our server had pocketed the $40-50 in cash we had laid down toward the bill and overcharged our card to make up for it. Do yourselves a favor and get your average and overpriced meal at an honest establishment that wont steal your hard earned money.

I've been here a few times and had their burger, which I thought was very good, and went for brunch this time. I had their corned beef sandwich and my wife had the huevos rancheros, both were great. $2 mimosas is a great deal too. If go back. Wasn't crowded at all on a sunny, January Saturday at noon.

Usually we go to 23Hoyt for Happy Hour before we go to a Timbers game. This is the first time for dinner and we were pleased. My mom and I split the asparagus appetizer and burger. It took awhile to be served, but it was yummy!!

Great food and drinks...bartender concoctions were top notch and included a plum-fig drink with muddled figs. Made tapas work of the menu and enjoyed elk tartar and an heirloom tomato salad.

The owner kindly sent me a gift certificate for my poor dining experience back in April. On Wednesday my guy and I came in and were seated in a section with the SAME server as last time. But, she was on her game this time. Service was quick, no fuss, and she gave us some great recommendations. I had two of the La Rosa (spicy) and a order of the cheese place. The Chevre with jam was amazing! I also had a Cesar salad which was big and very good. My guy had the Rosemary Burger with fries and he said it's just as good and Clark/Lewis (same owners) so that is a plus! This experience was much better and we will come back.

I went here today for brunch and it was yummy! Simple garden omelette with some potatoes, and no bread. It was just the right amount and not too much. I was quite content. I really liked the atmosphere inside of the restaurant as well. Service was great too! I would definitely go back!

I came here for my 28th birthday a few weeks back and it was really great. We had a certificate from a raffle that was for a dinner for 2 and a bottle of champagne. We were seated away from the rest of the restaurant and we had a few choices on the menu for that meal printed with our names on them. The waiter was very attentive and the service he gave was prompt. We were server 3 appetizers that just came out when we say down: Brussel sprouts with crispy onion or leeks, raw Salmon with break )not sure what to call this but it was good), and porn bell with beans. These were all delicious . We then got to choose another app so we got a butternut squash soup and something else that I do not remember because I did not eat it. The soup was very good and smooth. Entrees: We chose the duck and flat iron steak. The duck was absolutely delicious! My flat iron with mash was good but not as memorable as the duck. Dessert: They brought out a cheese plate first, then a piece of chocolate cake or torte (which I liked even though I am not too fond of chocolate), and a olive oil cake with cream and a berry sorbet. The last dessert was my favorite. It was so light and the sorbet was nice and tart. Overall I was impressed with the quality of the food and the service was impeccable. I would give it another go if I am in the area again and see what the normal dining experience is like. Thanks for the memorable meal!

I brought my Corgi and a couple of friends to 23Hoyt on a Saturday. I was surprised it was dog friendly even for happy hours. The waitress was attentive and very nice. Even when they made a mistake of giving us an extra drinks, we get to keep it with no extra cost. The happy hour menu was fantastic, even for my picky gluten-free vegetarian friend. The cocktails are only 6 dollars, and a couple of them are pretty strong. I would highly recommend this for those who seek a nice location for their dogs or just hanging out with the girls.

Was here for Happy Hour over the weekend. The service was fine but we did arrive just after they opened at 4pm so there were only two other tables occupied in the entire place. The prices for Happy Hour were reasonable for the quality of the food. Everything we tried was very yummy though the portions were on the slightly smaller side, but I would prefer to get a smaller higher quality snack over a huge plate of mediocre chow. Minus one star for the plating. I ordered the burger and it was super juicy and delicious, however instead of servicing it on a plate, they put it on what looked like a flat edged cutting board so the juice from by burger ran right off the sides got all over the table and almost dripped onto my clothes but for my ninja like reflexes. The decor is really attractive, they have live trees inside so you feel like you're eating in a green house.

in my second time visiting Portland, i found this place, and i think is AWESOME, the waiter a black guy, don't remember his name, super funny, super nice and friendly and fast! the decoration is elegant but not pretentious, everything look so clean and warm, and THE FOOD! i eat a like 5 things in the menu 2 desserts ! everything was mmmm how i can describe this in just one word, DELICIOUS ? and while we were eating the desserts Chef Chris come in to our table and we hang out with him for a little bit, i feel so welcoming, this is for sure a restaurant in the same level of any international and award winner restaurants all over the world, if you are in Portland you must eat in 23 Hoyt!

As much as I want to love this place, I can't. I was in again on Friday evening for a dinner date with my boyfriend (we were in around a month ago and had the same experience). The ambience and service were awesome but the food...aye aye aye, the food! Why is everything so 1) terribly over salted and 2) purely mediocre?! I had the pork with polenta and couldn't even finish it. It was so over salted it ruined my appetite. My boyfriend had the chicken and it was was also too salty! Is the chef a smoker, maybe? Maybe this would have worked if both our dishes weren't so pedestrian and lacking in creativity. And fluffernutter ice cream...? Did I travel back in time to a trailer park in 1995? It's one thing to be trendy- but it's and entirely different story if the chef is regurgitating food trends from 10 years ago. Our server was gracious and offered to replace the entree but, like I said, my appetite was kinda blown at this point. I want to like this place, I really do. But with such a blah dining dining experience both times I don't think I'll be back.

Neutral at best on service and food. I wanted it to be great, having only had drinks there over the years. But the food was so so and the service a little above good. We actually went because of Passport card and not sure I'd go back even with that. Food dishes were pretty small and not that enticing. Sorry Charlie.

Had the most awkward dinner tonight. The menu was a bit pretentious and the waiter had no clue. I am a fairly sophisticated diner and even the most basic questions could not be answered. It became a bit of a game at the end. We were rushed during the entire meal, glasses being taken before finished and courses pushed upon us before we were ready. The restaurant was not crowded and there were no other diners wanting the table. The food was good but it was a gamble making the choice since there was no advice or basic knowledge of the menu offered.

20 minutes sitting here and I can't get a server to give me the time of day. Now, I'm going to leave and have no plans to come back. The only saving grace this place ever had was it's happy hour. Now, it's completely off my radar.

We've been coming here for years but the inconsistency really just got to be too much. We always find the atmosphere to be wonderful, the staff quirky and charming, the manager (former?) Eli always had great suggestions for drinks, but when ordering old favorites that may come prepared differently, with different sides or varying quantities of same, or even being stunningly perfect one day and almost inedible the next, I really can't figure out why there is so much variance. Happy Hour can't be beat, cheap and plentiful menu, great outdoor seating during warm weather and beautiful decor in winter, tho they do take down Holiday decorations way too early in the winter! Oh, I really like the music selection and volume, really helps create a hip and modern "Portland" vibe while dining.

Amazing brunch. Innovative menu that's fresh and comforting. The service was relaxed which I appreciated since that was the mood of my Sunday. Food was top notch and the donuts. Oh, donuts. They were amazing! Could have stayed there for 5 hours with just mimosas and donuts. Very cool atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Perhaps I'm missing the hype? I wanted to see the greatness. Really, I did. The food wasn't great and was quite overpriced. I'd give it three stars, but we were seated at "the only available table" in a nearly empty restaurant around 4:30/5, which was a high table by the kitchen. No big deal, we didn't have reservations and I generally don't notice that type of thing, but the service was sporadic at best. After apps, we left because they just weren't that great and the service again wasn't great. Disappointed.

Okay, after 3 years of visiting this spot and always having mixed feelings about it, I've finally decided where I land - 3 stars! 23 Hoyt has the atmosphere, ambiance, and location down solid. It's their service and food that are hit and miss...As long as you know that going in, this place is great. Every time I visit this spot, something is wrong with my order; however they are always happy to fix it. Also, it's 50/50 whether your server is cool or not. They're either happy to serve and jawjack with you, or they're gonna roll their eyes and wish they hadn't signed up for that nights shift. Now that I've accepted and coped with these facts, I LOVE this spot. I leave my type A assessment at home, put on my easy going passive pants, and enjoy. They have 2 TV's in the bar, which always have sports on. Being a NBA and NFL girl, they get big brownie points here! I recently went in for the Portland Dining Month deal and it was ahhhmazing! My friend and I did have to send our salads back due to our inability to find the lettuce under the serious amount of thick creamy dressing, but the server was a complete doll about it which made it zero issue. Get the donuts for dessert, you'll thank me. ;) I absolutely recommend everyone check this place out and decide for yourself what you think of it. Keep doing you, 23 Hoyt. In 3 years, you haven't gotten better and you haven't gotten worse. We're cool. :)

This was a truly bizarre experience. We chose 23 Hoyt for a celebration dinner which included 4 young children. The kids were fine, but the staff can't be credited with giving their needs any attention. We had long waits for food, failure to produce requested items, and one of those waitresses who manages to studiously avoid eye contact as she navigates around your table. The food was really mediocre to terrible. I had lamb which I had to send back, since I couldn't even get my knife through it, and literally had to spit out the one bite I managed to carve off of the tough slice, since my teeth weren't up to the job either. And not only was it tough, but it was also flavorless. A fellow diner ordered the same lamb, and echoed my thoughts about the flavor, although his lamb was tender. All of the dishes we ordered came with some kind of a bean based accompaniment. I am a lover of any description of beans, but these were tough and very very short on flavor. Just careless, thoughtless preparation. A tad more attention to detail and seasoning could yield some very nice results. This is where we learn the difference between a competent chef and a careless cook. Someone with little skill or care followed a decent recipe, but not to the part where it's cooked or seasoned properly. One of the kids had chicken breast, which was dry and overcooked, and again, short on seasoning. It sat on a bed of the aforementioned tough and flavorless beans. Another had salmon, which was overcooked, unimpressive, and served with bland black lentils. She had requested that the salmon be prepared without the advertises toppings, but just a slice of lemon. The slice never came, and for a 6 year old with a clear notion of how she likes her salmon in mind, that was a huge disappointment and a very unnecessary one. The third had mediocre steak, which came with potatoes that ended up being a star on the table. It's hard to mess up a roasted potato, so I'm not going to go long on congratulations here. The one dish everyone really loved was the gnocchi. Poor little guy who ordered it had to share with everyone, since that was the only really tasty entree of the night. Fortunately he was a good sport, especially given the promise of a much anticipated dessert. Details on that disappointment to follow. When we arrived the restaurant was crowded, but by the time our entrees arrived it had thinned out, and we were the only patrons in the section. Our service didn't get better as a result, but actually became almost non-existent, except for the very strange moment when the waitress plonked down a bowl of gelato in front of me, my fellow diners and 4 kids who were only really there for the donut holes they remembered from a previous visit. She very proudly explained that this was to compensate for my inedible lamb. I'm still trying to figure out what was in the mind of this waitress to do that. She never asked if we wanted dessert, and after dumping mine in front of me, she disappeared for a very very long time. In the meantime, 'my" dessert had been eagerly gobbled up by the kids who were hardly satisfied. When we finally flagged the waitress to ask for dessert menus, she seemed quite surprised. Anyone who dines with kids knows that even the best behaved young child will eventually lose interest in sitting quietly at the table. The goal is to feed them food they enjoy, particularly the always long awaited dessert, and get going. How much training or experience must a wait person or restaurant manager have to understand that? Fortunately, our kids were better equipped for the experience than 23 Hoyt was. I would never return to this restaurant, especially after reading review after review that complains about the truly ridiculously poor service and mediocre food. Since they seem to do great cocktails and bar food, perhaps they might consider specializing in those and leaving the cheffing to chefs who can deliver what a well-devised menu promises. Based on my observations, I believe that the owners/managers at 23 Hoyt need to do a better job at setting standards for the food and the service, and following up on those. Don't just promise, deliver. Everything there seems disjointed. Not fun for the customer.

My first time here, and in some ways it lived up to the hype - in other ways it fell a bit short. The food was good, service was decent - but we were seated right next to the bar, where happy hour (or just a lot of LOUD was going on) and the waitstaff seemed to be constantly trying to get around the spill of people who were standing around at the bar. I honestly don't know if there is any actual dining space which isn't part of the bar, but if there is, I think I would have preferred there. Just note - the bar is loud, know this before you go in, and if you want something more quiet - I highly suggest you ask before you're seated. I enjoyed my food however there was a PILE of black pepper just sitting on the top. I enjoy pepper, but in this case, all of us were scraping it off of our plates because it was literally in a pile. I did however order an additional side of truffled polenta - which I thought they had forgotten, but apparently they made it FRESH and it came to me steaming hot and delicious.

Went here for lunch with my family and boyfriend on a saturday. The place was pretty empty and it took the server a while before we even got our menu. I found so many things that I disliked about the place that I need to make a list: - You cannot add chicken to the caesar salad (what?) - Three tiny slices of bacon will cost you 5 dollars (quite surprised how little you got for the money) - The caesar salad is so bland, absolutely no creativity whatsoever -The house potatoes was so roasted that they were basically deep fried; dark brown and way too salty - My boyfriend asked to have his burger without cheese but received it with cheese anyway On top of this they forgot my boyfriends burger! Yep, but after asking for it two times they could still not admit that they had forgotten it, it took them about 20 minutes before it arrived (after everyone else had received their food) but they were nice enough to not charge him for it. The problem is that they should just be honest and say that they forgot it instead of telling us that it is on its way with a nervous face expression. By the look of the place I was expecting something really tasty but it was a huge disappointment. We will not come back to this.

We dropped in for happy hour on a Friday night and were delighted by the service, the food, and the atmosphere. The service was very friendly and attentive. We were seated near an indoor tree, which was pretty cool. The food came out very quickly, and was delicious. I had the beets and onion rings, and my husband had the chickpea fries and deviled eggs. I also had the Camera Obscura cocktail, which was a lovely shade of purple, and stronger than it looked. The menu is good for both picky eaters and the more adventurous. There are vegetarian and pescetarian options. I didn't notice anything vegan--lots of things have cheese. I would definitely come here again, maybe for dinner or brunch next time.

The whiff of mediocrity is reflected in its almost good but suspiciously not quite overall star ranking. Medium good food & atmosphere combined with premium pricing and indifferent, confused service = go elsewhere. Portland is a lovely food town and life is short with the opportunity for real pleasure. Why did I eat here? Oh well. Only once.

So, I'm sure you have all been here!! It's been a couple years for me!!!! I know I know!!!! Practically a life time. My friend and I decided to hit the HOYT up for our ritualistic Friday Night Happy Hour. At the entrance there is a curtain that acts as a barrier to the rest of the restaurant. I LOVE this. It prevents anyone near the door from getting a COLD draft as people come and go!!!! Excellent idea here in PDX. We grabbed a high table int he bar and were greeted immediately by a super cute server. Excellent selection and prices for their Happy Hour Food and Drinks. My friend got the Pumpkin Beer. I got some tequila drink over ice first and then later got what I think they called "the show off", a hot toddy with a pumpkiny flare. We were BOTH very happy! For food my friend got their daily flatbread with goat cheese and arugula!! She loved it. I got the bacon burger I thought it looked too small at first sight, but in the end couldn't finish it!! LOL. Both our food came out on a slab of sorts rather than plates!!! Very fun! The overall ambiance can't be beat!!! The lighting and interior decor are very inviting. My fave part are all the melty candelabras!!!! I LOVE the drippy melty pile they create! The Service was fab as well. Never an empty water glass. Perhaps too many water boys and girls and bussers hovering over us. The music may need adjusting as well. Too much techno for 5pm Happy Hour. I think we found our new spot!

Our waiter couldn't answer any of our questions about items on the menu. Food was ok but not great. When it came time to go we asked for the restaurant to call us a cab. They apparently were put on hold and got tired of waiting and then told us we had to call our own cab.

PROS: Good wine, and good dessert. CONS: Horrible service, bland entrees, overpriced for what you get. Came here on a special occasion date night. The wait staff did not give two hoots, and took more than 2 1/5 hours to get our entrees. Started with him giving each of us a different menu, then did not know which one was which. We ordered wine and an app, that took over 30 minutes, then the salads took another 30minutes, and we had to track down or waiter or steal silverware off of the tables next to us, because our waiter was who-knows-where, and asked to not have to wait for our entrees, and to just bring them out....well 30 minues later those came out... Then in ordering dessert, we had to sit there for another 30-45 minutes.... ABSURD!!!!! Not happy with the overpriced food for it came out completely bland, and an array of ingredients that did not go together, and wine I could have bought at Fred Meyer for 1/2 the price of 1 glass. Will not return.

Quoting a review from Foodie Food Blog:YourNextBite..couldn't agree more. 23 Hoyt disappointed for our anniversary celebration. Stick to surrounding establishments. This place has work to be up to NW 23rd standards... Last weekend, the hand model & I flew up to Portland to celebrate my fabulous friend's engagement. After a sophisticated soiree at The Town Club, he chose a contemporary restaurant he'd been to before at Nob Hill's aptly named NW 23rd Hoyt Avenue. The location is prime on a corner spot with floor to ceiling windows up to the second story. Walk inside the loft-like space and you'll see raw woods, earth-tones, and antler chandeliers. Our party had a special table up top with great views of the wide open space and dining area down below. Our waiter was kind, and as the evening went on, unfortuantely forgetful. Our courses were never sent to the right guest at the table. And this wasn't just by him, but by the 2 bussers too. (One in particular, had an air of hoity-toityness about her, when asked if she could check on the correct dishes being served). It also didn't help that the farm-to-table menu items were selling out fast, leaving one friend without a complete meal as it was too late to rectify the forgotten order. The Grubdown: - fresh 'n subtly sweet but unfortunately bland, English Pea Soup with Chili Oil, Chive Flowers & Herbs $9 - tender 'n light, perfectly moist with refreshing Mint Yogurt Sauce, Seasonal Chinook Salmon with Potatoes, English Peas, Porcini Mushrooms & Nasturtium $26 - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, thin 'n snackable, Side of French Fries with Sea Salt $5 - sugar dusted pillowey pieces of heaven, Warm Donut Holes with Sea Salt & Caramel Sauce (peace offering) Overall the food was good, not great, and at times bland. My friend had a word with the manager about our misplaced plates. He apologized profusely and gave us two Donut dessert peace offerings. Still, we couldn't help but leave with a 'vanilla' taste in our mouths. 529 NW 23rd Ave, Portland, OR 97210. 503-445-7400.

I give this a solid "OK." I have no complaints- staff was attentive, restaurant was clean and in an excellent location. But truly, I found the food unremarkable. Nothing was bad, but nothing was really stand out either. Favorite part of the meal was the bacon and date appetizer, which in itself is disappointing since my husband and I both got spendy dinner dishes. Don't think we will be returning.

My husband and I love this place!! When date night rolls around it is really hard to choose anything other than 23rd Hoyt and their amazing burgers! Even better is it really isn't even that much more expensive than the Rams Head burgers (maybe $1.50 more) but they are 100x better. I will never eat a mcminnamins burger again!

Great happy hour, reasonably priced drinks, well appointed space with a good mix of old and new school vibes. Nice alternative the mustache wax joints so prevalent in the PDX.

We walked right in at lunchtime. Ordered breakfast. The hollandaise sauce was delicious. The marmalade the best I've ever had. Breakfast martini is also recommended. We would eat here again. Prices seem to be a bit high but not ridiculous. Good came quickly but waiters were slow with requests (like for another martini.)

Awful - just awful. We had reservations via Open Table, but when we arrived we had to wait for the employees to finish their conversation and acknowledge us before being seated - at the worst table in the house. Thanks. After receiving permission to move to the table next to us (but being told by the person who seated us to scoot my purse over - while I was still get situated, thank you), we looked at the menu. The selection was great and the food looked good. We were willing to get past the rude response to our arrival. My BF ordered a cocktail and the grilled peppers. All good there. I ordered the hamachi crudo with tomatoes. The fish tasted fishy (a bad sign) and the tomatoes were mealy. For our next course, we had the oak leaf lettuce with dressing on the side. Of course, it arrived dripping in dressing. When I complained, the person who delivered it got upset and questioned how I ordered it. Thanks for that. Our waitress stopped by to apologize, but we never saw her again. Ever. Well, actually, that isn't true. She was around and glanced our way a few times, but never stopped to see how our entrees were, to ask if we wanted dessert, or to thank us for coming in. The entrees were where it went from bad to worse. Really worse. I ordered the albacore. It was cold and flavorless. My BF agreed and he never complains and is willing to put up with just about anything. I ate a bit of it, but it was so flavorless and just not good, that I left well over half on my plate and I never leave food on my plate. The waitress never stopped by to inquire and the man who cleared our plates only asked if I wanted a box. No one ever asked how our entrees were or whether we enjoyed our meal. Clearly, they just didn't care. Overall, a really disappointing experience that was a complete failure in the back of the house and the front. A poor culture of customer service and a lack of attention to detail that leads me to believe it was not an isolated incident. Be ware.

Had an early dinner with my wife on a Thursday. We ordered the cheese plater and bison tartare for starters. I've never had tartare so I thought I'd give it a try; perfect amount and very tasy. Ordered a bottle of the house red, nothing special but good. Our entries consisted of the halibut and roasted chicken. The halibut was very good, perfectly cooked and just the right amount. The roasted chicken was nice and crispy but super moist on the inside; all very satisfying. Desert consisted of the donut holes rolled in sugar and a salted caramel sauce; highly recommend. Great staff with high service standards.

Hate to be one of those "I am writing a review but didn't eat there" people, but I tried to eat here and had to leave... Came in at like 3pm on a Friday for a late lunch with my wife and 2 daughters. The hostess (who had bad bottle job red hair) said she would "check in the computer" for a table for us. She then proceeds to seat is in "the lounge" which is completely empty and has no lights on. Yes, we brought 2 kids in your restaurant. But a) they are 7 and 9 and not giving any signs that they'd misbehave in a restaurant and b) there's no excuse for such blatant handling of customers with kids. So out the door we went...

Well, we went here last night (sunday night. Not too busy) and this place definitely lives up to it's reputation per many of other negative reviews: The service is horrible, the staff seemed to be unhappy, in general, with attitudes as though we were interrupting them to bring us the 2 beers we ordered (it took us 20 minutes to get us 2 'bottles' of beer). We never got asked for a re-fill, then we had to chase the waiter down for a couple more. However, apparently, one of the beers was not cold, so they waited to bring them together, which would be fine, however, after 15 mins we had to chase him down again as to why we didn't have our beers. Only then did he explain the circumstance. There was also a bus boy that was assisting (I guess..?) Who seemed annoyed when he had to bring us anything. One of our party had to send her half cooked chicken back to the kitchen to fully cook it. It came back quickly, so we assume it was microwaved for a few mins. All in all, the food was 'ok', but then when we got our hefty bill for a party of 6, who ordered 6 dinners, a couple bottles of wine, multiple beers, a couple of cocktails, some appetisers and some desert, we asked the waiter if the gratuity was already included and he rudely said "No" and walked away, apparently appalled we would even ask such a thing. So, due to all factors included, ANYONE could do better for overall service and quality of food. I gave it 2 stars, and not 1 star, because, well, the place is is actually a decent looking and cozy place haha. You could do better... Look elsewhere

It's a nice space, but that's about it. A friend and I dined there Sunday night over Memorial Day weekend. We had no utensils when our entree arrived and our cocktails were bone dry. I had to leave the table to ask the host to help us. He arranged for utensils and after a long wait, wine. No apologies were provided. I ordered the pork, which was dry. Once was enough. Too many great restaurants to try!

**Brunch Only** Took the best Mom-In-Law a gal could ask for here for Mothers Day brunch. They weren't doing anything special, which was fine by us because it meant it would be less crowded, and I honestly chose the spot based on the fact that you can book a reservation. While I (like most Portlanders) so enjoy waiting over an hour for a table for five at say, Screen Door, today that just wasn't gonna happen. I wanted things to be easy on Mama. And everything went according to plan! The place wasn't very busy when we arrived at 11:30 but did pick up by the time we were on our way out. We were sat promptly at a comfortable back corner booth and our server was really sweet and attentive. They deliver adorable little scones once sat, one for each person at the table. MIL and I enjoyed the mimosa for two (1/2 bottle of Korbel and tiny carafe of OJ), and the bartender made my FIL a sweet St. Germaine & gin cocktail. The menu was a bit short on variety/options, but we had no problem finding something to order. Unfortunately, while it was by no means bad, the food was just not what I had expected from them. My husband was pretty disappointed with his eggs benedict, and my omelette was fine but not memorable. Even with bacon! I was happy when the server offered to bring hot sauce, because what dish is not improved exponentially with the addition of hot sauce. None IMHO, so I was happy with the kick of heat. The potatoes were okay, but again didn't impress. I'll definitely be back to 23 Hoyt for drinks, HH, and dinner. Brunch? Maybe just for the $2 mimosas.

Awesome food, lackluster service. While on a recent trip to Portland, my hubs & I stopped here for dinner on our last night in town. It was a lovely evening so we chose to sit outside on the patio. We were certainly enjoying the nice weather and people watching but where was our server? Finally he showed up and then disappeared again for a while, this pattern continued throughout the whole meal. The food on the other hand was great. The bread came out with ricotta cheese instead of butter, a delicious idea that I would have never thought of. Then we received an amuse-bouche course of gaspatcho soup sip, also delicious and well balanced with plenty of flavor. Next, our dinners came - I got the roasted chicken with truffles & watercress, the hubs got fried chicken. I sampled his and he sampled mine - we were both satisfied very much with our meals. I just wish we could have been more thrilled with the service.

I come to Portland on business and when here at the suggestion of a customer. Great atmospher and open bar area. The multi level seating area is a cool idea and give the place additional character. I started with a tomato orzo soup. It had a delicious broth and the orzo and veggies added a nice texture. For my main course, I went with the Copper River Salmon. Being from Boston, we just don't get this option too much back east. You are welcome to have my share of the bland, farm raised Atlantic cousin to this delectible little protien. The preperation was great with not too much to mask the fabulous fish. This would be a cool place to take a date. Service could have been better and our waitress disapeared for sections of time. Otherwise, a solid option.

The attitude does not match the delivery. Attitude at the door. Seated 30 minutes after reservation. Took 20 minutes for server to even approach the table (after we asked for her). Ordering every course was a chore. Every plate was... OK. 10% tip will be left... because we are generous people. Nothing more.

I am rating 23 Hoyt four stars for my happy hour experience. After a long, productive day at work, the happy hour at 23 Hoyt hits the spot. This happy hour is rad! There is a separate happy hour menu with multiple items from $1 to $8 in price, including crispy, thin french fries, onion rings, lamb meatballs, flatbread, and salted chocolate chip cookies. There is also a discount on cocktails and draft beer. I have had happy hour food that is 'happy hour quality,' but this happy hour menu is very good, with a wide range of yummy food.

  • Katie M.

Their happy hour had great food and great prices and it's usually not a long wait to get a table. We've been their twice now, and each time everything was great. I have to eat pretty restrictive as far as grains and dairy goes and their menu is very accommodating. With that being said though, I got the exact same thing each time and every happy hour plate and drink I had last night was plated and presented entirely different. And the taste was a tad different too. Albeit not bad, but different. Would have five stars if the consistency was more regular.

Absolutely amazing steak; red and juicy on the inside with blackened but not charred exterior. The location is good and the atmosphere is semi classy romantic. The staff were friendly and prompt.

Had a reservation here on Friday night for Portland's Restaurant month- 3 courses for $29. I was disappointed that their tasting menu only offered two options in each category (appetizer, soup/salad, entree) but we were game. We chose the Oxtail Bruschetta for our app (Originally billed as Oxtail croquettes with apricot mostarda and pickled red onions on the downtownportland.org/Din… website), which ended up being like beans on toast for any of you Brits our there. Little meat and lots of pinto beans which resembled a bean chili on a single slice of french bread, which I had to scrape off cause they didn't have a GF option. Not saying it tasted bad, but it was pinto beans on toast at a moderately high end restuarant. I expect more. We had the tomato bisque which was nice and we chose the "Braised duck leg with roasted Anjou pear, dandelion greens and red wine duck jus", which again didn't come out as advertised. The duck leg was obviously braised because it was falling off the bone, but they didn't bother to do anything with the skin so it was soggy and just hung there. I wish they had taken the time to pan sear the skin to make it crispy to add some dimension. It did come with a poached pear, but no dandelion greens in sight, instead it sat on a bed of braised red cabbage. I didn't know duck was a German dish. Hmmm. So, braised duck leg, poached pear and braised red cabbage. Can a girl get some texture and dimension here?!?! Bottom line, if you're gonna participate in restaurant month, then include entrees that are on your current menu! I'm giving this place three stars because what came out around us looked amazing! The crab arancini, fondue, beef tartare and cheese plates that were delivered around us looked amazing and everyone seemed to enjoy them. Also, the service was good and the so were the drinks. The restuarant itseld is beautiful and the atmoshpere was really chill, but I guess that I'm giving them a star for potential. I'd give it two stars if I was going off of my own plates. Sadly, I was just keeping a good attitude because my company was amazing.

Happy Hour is awesome here. Great place to sit and people watch. The deviled eggs were amazing and the macaroni and cheese was very good. Meal was less than 20 with a 6 dollar cocktail included.

The place looks cool, modern and clean..... I have found that restaurants on 23rd are hit and miss, and this one definitely missed the mark on their service. My biggest and most annoying pet peeve when I go out to dine, is when my appetizer arrives BEFORE my drink!!! We ordered 2 glasses of wine and onion rings. The rings came out before the wine!?! It's wine, pour and serve, no need to mix and strain like a martini, come on guys, please step up your service here. We had the wine, ate the rings, and left. Hoyt, sorry to say, but you lost what could have been a returning customer.

I'm surprised to see the modest average rating. My meal here was absolutely beautiful. Starting with the bread they brought out, it was a real wake-up call for the taste buds. Next up was an excellent Caesar salad... these can often be very disappointing, but suffice it to say they did theirs right. For my entree I had a burger topped with a fried egg that was excellent. We finished out with the donut holes & caramel sauce, perhaps not the best I've every had, but still pretty tasty. Just wonderful all around. Atmosphere is upscale and contemporary, service was polite and attentive. I would go back without a doubt.

Food was not good, had to send the fondue back due to it being watery and grainy, also the squash soup was tasteless except for the overwhelming pepper taste. Drinks where weak, way over priced in my opinion, and when asking for well vodka, I guess that means top shelf because my weak vodka/cran was $9, this isn't LA! Also it was so stuffy in there, we where seated upstairs and all uncomfortable and sweaty! it was a terrible experience and I'll never come back and do not recommend it unless you feel like getting ripped off. The price we paid we should have had a 5 star experience!

My partner and I dined here on a Friday night. We were seated right away. Our food was very good. The beet salad was delicious. The warm donut holes were scrumptious! Unfortunately, our server was very disappointing. I think he said about 10 words to us the entire meal. Absolutely no friendliness or conversation. We were not high maintenance or difficult at all--didn't really ask for anything. The restaurant was pretty quiet, so it wasn't because he was busy. We felt as if we didn't matter at all. Despite the treatment, we still tipped well. I am giving the server the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was just having a bad day. We will probably give the restaurant another shot, but the experience was a shame because we really liked everything else.

We came in here on a whim after walking around and being unable to decide what we wanted to eat. The menu seemed to have a wide variety of options, so off we went. Service was INSANELY slow from the get go. Took over twenty minutes to get my Sapphire and tonic and took another fifteen or so for my second. The food was good, but not great. Nothing amazing. Just your standard above average restaurant. Burgers were cooked as we had ordered them, which was a plus. Oozing with flavor too! The mussels were okay. Standard. The flatbread wasn't worth the price and we ended up just getting that to try something additional off the menu. Pricing wasn't the best, but not grossly overpriced either. It was about $80 total for the two of us. Probably shouldn't have tipped as much as I did, but the server seemed overwhelmed more than anything and it didn't seem like she was intentionally bad or providing bad service, because she was having a bad day.

Hey! I love this place. I come whenever possible. Their price point happy menu is fabulous. There's always new stuff on there, plus some great stand-by items as well. My favorite is usually the fried greenbeans and any of their flatbreads are tasty. On Sunday they had a new item on the menu which were meatballs over some polenta. So good!! Plus they have great wines for their HH menu which is awesome. I have never had a bad experience here. Plus they have HH on Sunday. What's not to love about that?

Just went here yesterday for Happy Hour and it remains one of my favorite places. Yes, it's more expensive than some other HH's but the ingredients are high-quality, the portions are generous, and everything is presented beautifully. We paid $50 for 2 entrees, 2 apps, and 4 drinks. The service was great and it's a great perch for people-watching on NW 23rd.

Warning DO NOT go here. Let me begin by saying that I never write a bad review. In fact I was in the service industry for 7 years and consider myself extremely patient and compassionate when it comes to those serving on me. I brought my mother here for brunch, based on it being considered one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood and her never venturing into the city. We were seated quickly and ordered drinks and food immediately, because we were starving and thirsty. When ordering we had a few basic question about substitutions and what nots, the server has no idea and was straight forward about that. The downfall was she didn't had anyone to answer our questions. So we just ordered anyway. Our mimosas took 15 minutes to get. We realized 45 minutes later that a table down the aisle from has had received their food...they were seated 20 minutes after us. I started to become concerned and then grabbed our server. She apologized and said our food was on the way. About 15 minutes later the manager brought over our food. I explained to him my frustration and he apologized. When he walked away we realized that our order was wrong! We proceed to WALK OUT...which I have never done. To some it up I was EXTREMELY disappointed. Don't waste your time, such a lack of true hospitality. There are far too many other phenomenal restaurants in the neighborhood that understand what it means to take care of their customers. We went down the street to another restaurant and was served good within 15 minutes of arriving.

One of the best burgers I have ever had. It had a fried duck egg on it! So good. When we asked the waitress what we should have for dessert she seemed to react as if it was a stupid question. She said, "oh you've never been here before?" We said no, we hadn't. She simply said "You're having the donut holes." And walked away without any discussion about it. Reading this, that might seem rude, but she pulled it off in a way that was charming, and had us convinced she had made a good decision for us. We laughed about it. And when the donut holes arrived... Oh. My. God. There aren't words to describe it, but I will try. Think of the most perfect donut you've ever had, but now imagine that donut is covered in fairy dust and dreams. Now imagine these donuts also come with the most perfectly creamy hot caramel dipping sauce you've ever had.

I had a really great time here. Food's just ok but good drinks. But when it was time to go, my sister headed to the bar and asked to close her tab. She said this while holding eye contact with the bar tender, and then he went to serve the drink he just made, and start making another. This didn't bother me, bartenders are busy. Served the second person, then asked if someone else wanted to be closed out! Then closed them out, and made someone else a drink. We waited about 8-10 minutes, watching this guy serve a not-very-crowded bar. We kept trying to wave at him and make eye contact and now he was straight up avoiding us. It was completely bizarre and turned me off to this otherwise nice-seeming restaurant. Never again. AWFUL SERVICE!

We ended up at 23 Hoyt after trying to stop in for a post-dinner drink at an establishment across the street. After getting no service, we walked out and across here. We were pleasantly surprised. We'd never been here and were late enough in the evening for their late night happy hour. This is a nicer restaurant, so happy hour was a good way to sample a few things inexpensively and get a drink, which is all we really wanted. We sat downstairs, near the front door in the window. Very good people watching with those huge windows. We had no trouble getting a table for 7, but there were quite a few other patrons there. Both in the bar area and the upstairs dining room. Conversation was fairly easy, it wasn't too noisy. We ordered cocktails, I had the punch drink on the menu, something with house punch mix and brandy. It was SMALL, but very tasty. I'd order it again. Just wish it was a bit more generous. For snacks, we just ordered pickles ($1 for a ramekin of freshly made pickles, pretty mild and crisp, just the right amount of dill and vinegar), onion rings (thick cut, super crispy and not overly breaded that comes with a mayo-based red pepper-ish sauce) and shoestring fries (very crispy, lightly cooked, plenty of salt). They had a large beer/wine list, but we stuck to cocktails. Bathrooms were large and clean. A bit back out of the way, but nice. (hey, when you've had a few drinks, it's important!) I probably wouldn't bring my kids here, didn't seem very kid friendly. The service was great. Very attentive, we always had water refilled, our server checked on us but didn't pester. They didn't even say anything when it was 20 minutes after closing time and we were unaware and still chatting away. We only realized they were closed when they turned away people trying to come in. All in all, it was a great friday evening stop. My only complaint is that they call themselves a restaurant/tavern, but are only open until 10:30. What kind of tavern closes at 10:30? Especially on the weekend. We plan to come back again for supper sometime.

My son and I were looking for a place to sit outside. I had heard of this place but had not been. I will be back often. The Halibut was the best I've ever had and my sons brick chicken was spectacular. for dessert we had the raspberry gelato and a great lemon cake. The price was a bit high, but that is to be expected with quality food. Service was attentive and everyone seemed to be having a good time around us. It looks like they have a few less expensive alternatives if you order off the happy hour menu - we did not know about this till after we ate. On Saturdays they have a happy hour from 9-11.

  • Mike G.

I gave it a 2 because of the great atmosphere. The $13 hamburger was tasteless and the overlooked fries that came with it mostly left on the plate. The happy hour scallops were good but the portion less than minuscule. I think the rating should be $$$.

I had high hopes for 23Hoyt based on the menu selection online. When it came to ordering, however, the selection was disappointingly different. To start, I thought the 'Marinated' mackerel looked interesting. I could be wrong but perhaps 'Marinated' for 23Hoyt means drowned in vinegar. I would have liked to have tasted the 'croutons, lemon, capers, Arbequina olive oil' but this was a challenge through the overpowering pickled-ness of the fish. And so, onto the main. For my 'entree' - again, come on America, the entree is not a main course. Look it up. Anyway, for the main I liked the sound of two things: rabbit and black truffles. Black truffle will generally have me perking up and ignoring every other option on the menu. I was given one warning though - it was a rabbit sausage. Ohhh-kay, a sausage. I'll go with that. When it eventually came the giant pale sausage made me feel like I'd ordered from the kids menu. One thing was most definitely missing though. The black truffle. I couldn't smell it, I couldn't taste it and the small dark flecks which could have visually passed for grated black truffle? They weren't truffle. Other than that glaring omission, it tasted pretty good but it was far from my expectations. 23Hoyt has some work to do before I return.

Happy hours have changed and now end at 6:30pm. I go to a pilates studio in the neighborhood and wanted to get a quick happy hour bite afterward. 23 Hoyt has been on my list to try out so I raced 6 blocks to get there before the 7pm (thanks Cocktail Compass) deadline. Bad news: happy hour had just ended before I got there. Good news: the manager extended happy hour for me (thanks Cocktail Compass!) I sat at the bar and quickly ordered a glass of their house white wine (French blend), ceasar salad and crispy green beans with spicy aioli. The white wine was delicious and a great value at $5/glass for happy hour. Next, a complimentary soup from their happy hour menu appears... mushroom soup with slices of baguette and a ramicken of butter. The ceasar salad was a nice size and had big croutons. The hit big though was the quick fried green beans with spicy aioli. I would go back again and again for that dish! Thank you again to the manager for letting me into happy hour late. I had a wonderful dinner and will be back soon.

Love this place! Great food, stellar service. The've got it decorated to the nines for Christmas, it's so festive and cozy. I had the egg nog made with a whole duck egg and mezcal; very creative and delicious. I have to recommend the "Fat Matt" pork chop with white cheddar polenta; it's epically huge, ridiculously tasty. What a great spot!

We recently went for dinner and were very disappointed in the service. When we arrived I could see the host/hostess standing in the kitchen talking to the servers and looking at us - it took him 5 minutes to come and greet us. Once seated, our server took out drink order and we did not receive them for about 15 minutes, and my husbands was wrong. I could see the drinks sitting at the bar for 10 minutes. Overall, the food was great, we were just disappointed in the service.

I've lived in this neighborhood for coming up on 7 years and this is the first time we have tried 23 Hoyt. It's a great location, pretty interior, outdoor seating, and what looks like a good menu. Unfortunately, the food is thoroughly uninteresting and the service was friendly but slow, slow, slow. My group of three was seated outside at one of the small picnic tables. The service came by to set down menus and take our drink order and vanished. Then about 15 mintes later, another server came by to take our drink order. We let her know that we'd already placed an order. She said that she would bring us bread. The bread never appeared. Another server came by and brought us water, and then about about 25 minutes after we sat down, we received our drinks and were presented the opportunity to order food. I ordered the Rogue burger ($15) and was asked how I would like it cooked: rare, please! My boyfriend ordered the Hoyt burger: medium rare, and our friend ordered a flatbread appetizer. Then, the waiting started. Luckily, they did bring us a small espresso cup of gazpacho as we were dying from hunger at that point. I was super glad we had a good friend and conversation to keep us amused during the wait. It was a very long time before the food arrived, probably about 45min to an hour? The burgers were served on these painted, flat, wooden boards. It's a sharp presentation. Unfortunately, my boyfriend's burger cheese grease oozed off the board and onto his lap. Oops. There are no rims on the board, so the uneven picnic table made for a messy meal. Both of our burgers were solidly well done, not even a hint of pink, and mine was pretty dry. I'm fine with a well done burger if that's all the kitchen is willing to serve, but don't ask me how I wanted it cooked! There was no incentive for me to send it back considering how long the first one took to arrive. The fries that came with the burger were the highlight of our meal. Thin, crispy, and perfectly salted, everyone at the table dug into these. Everything else was pretty nowhere and our friend tried to give us his flatbread leftovers. At some point the server came by and said "everyone looks like the good on drinks?" and left. I would have ordered a second drink, but oh well. Our dirty dishes then sat on the table for a very long time until a fourth server came by and noticed (the first server walked past our table several times looking, but didn't pick anything up). You could just call this "relaxed" service if you wanted to considering they were never rude, just slower than molasses. They didn't apologize for wait times, and considering the other reviews, I'm not the first to experience this so it's probably just status quo for them. I'm down with the Portland "relaxed" vibe on a nice sunny, summer evening, but this was just a little too long of a wait for me to give it that credit. Personally, for a $25 burger, fries, and drink, I'd like a little more care put into everything, including attention to wait times.

Stopped by the other night for Happy Hour and was pleasantly surprised by both the food and drink. Definitely a good spot for Portland foodies as the menu is diverse and adventurous. I had their Happy Hour twist of the classic Old Fashioned which was made with a maple bourbon. A flavor that paired well with this drink and shows their mixologist is quality. The interior is dark, stylish, and well designed. Sex and The City vixens would comfortably enjoy a Cosmo and gossip around Hoyt 23's candle lit tables and hip atmosphere.

I hate to say it, but the kitchen had a TOUGH night last night. Our experience started off strong: we were greeted very warmly and seated at a great table. We felt special, and it was a special night: we were celebrating several key milestones with our first date night out in MONTHS. But that's where the highlights stopped, unfortunately. Food was barely average (disappointing) cocktail was fabulous. But there was such a delay in receiving our food and drinks that it was actually comical. I had to keep texting our babysitter to keep her at our house -and apologize. Our waitress kept apologizing for the slow pace and tried to make it right, but our dinner was a disaster. We do not understand why they were so slow/busy. The upstairs was empty and over half of the first floor tables were also vacant by the time our meal was complete. Overall, we just felt uncomfortable being there, and tried to make the best of it. The bad date night out bonded us, but not in the way we had intended!

Recently had an awesome experience here - cool ambiance and fantastic food. Special thanks to the manager Eli for taking good care of me and my friends! We had an awesome time and certainly will be back! :)

Had a friend in from out of town who wanted to check out the Portland restaurant scene. After a light lunch we were driving up 23rd in a blinding rain and saw several parking spaces open in front of 23 Hoyt. We stopped for a HH drink. As we walked in we were greeted by a server who was really nice. We asked to sit at the bar she informed us they weren't open yet but grab a seat while they finished setting up. We chatted with the bartender as she finished her set up, she was very friendly and interested in us even while getting her station set. We eventually ordered the cocktail of the day. The Bartender makes a special drink for each day. I'm in the biz and am always interested in the skill and interest of a professional bar person. She was very informative about all alcohols and cocktails, even the ice which she said she was freezing different herbs in ice cubes so she could do some spring focused menu selections. Very nice atmosphere, comfortable and modern. Very pleasant knowledgeable staff. Cant wait to get back and treat my wife to the lovely experience I had on that rainy afternoon.

we've eaten dinner at 23 Hoyt several times and have been favorably impressed. the first time we went there, they had a glitch (getting an order wrong once), but they corrected it quickly and graciously. otherwise, the service has been friendly, competent, and unpretentious. the food has been good and the portions reasonably sized (unlike certain other places i need not mention here). recently, when i made a dinner reservation online (using that other web site) and mentioned that it was my fiancées birthday, they gave us a nice bottle of wine on the house. 23 Hoyt is a solid place we will continue to patronize and recommend. UPDATE We went to 23 Hoyt for brunch this past Sunday morning. We were disappointed. The service was very slow, the poached eggs were over cooked, the english muffin was under toasted, and the bacon was bi-polar -- one slice crispy and another not even al dente. Since we've had several good dinners at 23 Hoyt we expected the brunch to be equally good, it wasn't. We will go back for dinner, but we'll probably skip brunch from now on.

Came in on a Sunday Morning with some lady Friends for recovery breakfast from a birthday the night before. We loved the fact that they have $2 mimosa till 1 or 2PM, as well tried one of there bloody Marys as our waitress (Sara) suggested and She was right, I wanted more. Atmosphere was great as well and a friendly Staff. Our Service was GREAT, Sara exceeded my expectations as she was witty, personable, always had a smile on her face. Gave us some great suggestions more then once, we were ALL pleased in the end. Sara had over heard that it was one of our friends birthday and surprised us with doughnut holes (YUM) and a candle at the end of our meal. Really felt like she went above and beyond with us. I will be back and again soon as well sending people over that way!

We arrived for dinner just as the HH crowd was leaving. It appears that makes this place pretty busy! The Plateau 23 appetizer was great. Fried yummy goodness along side lighter beets and olives. The complimentary taste of the cauliflower soup was excellent! The Beer Braised Beef Cheeks were done excellent and the Polenta was terrific. The Ground Round Deluxe burger was tasty, and big enough but not just so ridiculously big it isn't even eatable. One of the others at the table had the salmon and said it was tasty, but kinda dry. Medium is a bit too cooked for pan seared IMHO. Our server did a fine job until it came to split up the meal and then she transposed the checks with the 2 cards we provided and showed her which couple belonged to which card. :( It was decently priced and we enjoyed the food and would probably come back.

I totally don't get the low star reviews for this place. Most seem to be around bad service, but I never had that experience. The service is relaxed, but not bad at all. They don't bother you too much, but it's not hard to get their attention if you need something. The food. It's just so good. The burger, the lamb, the fried green beans, the steak bites, the charcuterie plate, the beet salad....yum yum yum! And the dessert I had once was stellar. The cocktails. They are just so creative and delicious. Well thought out but not over the top fancy or too complicated. No one wants a cocktail with 75 ingredients in it. They infuse well and mix wonderfully. Happy hour is a great deal too. You can't beat it. All in all, this is my kind of place. Well thought out dishes, yum cocktails and casual atmosphere. Will go back again and again.

I've lived here off and on for over 20 years and I'm kicking myself for never trying this place before. My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves at 23 Hoyt. Really enjoyed the scene, our waiter, and food. We will be back....

The food was extremely delicious, but he staff left a lot to be desired. We waited almost an hour just for them to take our food entree. For the price we were paying, this is just unacceptable. I di bring it up to the manager and he bougth us a round of drinks, but when you walk into a place like this; you just expect differently. The actual ambience is wonderful. I just hope they step it up with customer service.l

A decidedly average happy hour. We had a group of five and we all agreed that the mixed drinks were sub par (the flavors were just "off"), the food was average but certainly not great, and everything felt a bit on the pricey side considering the quality and portion. Regarding atmosphere, the interior decor was somewhat odd; it was half trendy/classy and half tavern/bar like. On one hand you have modern furniture and a classy bar, and on the other hand you have a poorly decorated and cluttered wall and a neon bar sign hanging over the entrance. It was as if two opposing decorators got in an argument and decided to compromise and go with two styles. 23 Hoyt is by no means BAD but certainly difficult to recommend given the ample alternative options in the area.

I did a search on Yelp for cheap Mimosas and this place came in on the top of my list. Let me first say that there is nothing that feels cheap about this place. Not too many places here in Portland offer deals for brunch like $2 Mimosas and the ability to seat me within 2-5 minutes of me arriving for brunch. The decor alone is another reason to swing by this place. It has a rustic feel without making you feel like you are in a country cabin in the middle of the woods and your annoying little brother won't give you your space. The wait staff is really friendly and inviting. It seems that all the wait staff work as one unit. And food speaks for itself though it might come off as a little pricey. Try the Belgian Waffle, it's like butter. Also try the 23Hoyt Lamb Burger for a brunch alternative.

We love this place. We live right accross the street and frequent here often. Service is always friendly and courteous. Rarely have to wait for a table. The food is also fantastic. Theres always something new on the menu and the burger is great. We choose this burger over mcmenimans any day.

I came here for happy hour one night during a late night food attack. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a waiter and brought the menu. There were a handful of people there, but it wasn't full or overly busy, which kept the ambiance intimate. I most recall the decor, which was pretty wicked cool- sitting there, it looks like you're outside! Complete with overhead patio, trees and giant nuts, this place definitely has a "theme," and it works for them. Though the food was quite good, it wasn't OVERLY memorable or breathtaking. I should note it's a bit spendy (for those who may be planning to go here for a romantic dinner, it's definitely worth it).

We came across 23 Hoyt after walking down NW 23rd from our hotel. It was great timing too b/c apparently after 9pm, they have a late happy hour with drink and appetizer specials. Whoo hoo! Turned out that the HH snacks were excellent and even more so for their amazing price. We got the following $1 Pickled Asparagus - unique twist ... and irresistable $2 Bacon, Egg & Cheese Deviled Eggs (3) - creamy and delicious $3 Roasted Beets, Pistacchios and Ricotta - while I love all these ingredients, I thought this was somewhat of a miss as the beets tasted a little sour/pickled to me. $4 Tempura Fried Green Beans with Spicy Aioi - delicately fried; gone in seconds Unfortunately, after the high of those appetizers, the main dish fell flat. I had the lamb burger with bacon, which was rather dry. Also, way too many onions. Not worth it. The roasted chicken breast was all right but again, not as spectacular as the HH dishes. Service kinda blows here. It's friendly and all but takes frickin' forever to place your order, get your drinks, wait for you check. I'd recommend this place just for the HH bites and drinks (then it'd be four stars b/c of the bang for your buck).

We came here after a disaster trying another restaurant on 23rd (that I also reviewed). It was great! We had a great meal, great service and real nice romantic atmosphere. The vegetarian options were tasty and not just a vegetable plate. We will be back.

This review is for their happy hour as I have had that a few times but never anything on their dinner menu (it does look good though). The HH menu is solid, service is excellent, and they have a terrific outdoor seating area on Northwest 23rd. They have two area outside that feel very different. You can sit right off he sidewalk on 23rd in front of the restaurant and it's great for people watching as the variety of folks that are on 23rd stroll or cruise by. If you want something a little more quiet there are a lot of tables on the side street, with trees providing nice shade. Pros: - HH items are very tasty and fairly unique - great outdoor seating, from people watching to more secluded - creative drink specials Cons: - it would be nice to have a few other options on the HH menu - the value is good but not stellar I'm probably being a little tough with the 4 stars instead of 5...I'd give them 4.5 stars if possible

Great place for Happy Hour! A happy surprise is what I found at 23 Hoyt. Love the expansive Happy Hour menu. Love that the quality of the food is great. Love that the service is solid and friendly. Finally, a place to meet for Happy Hour that serves really good food and super reasonable prices and doesn't care if I order a cocktail or not. Cool, clean, less is more kind of interior awaits. Could easily be an L.A. hot spot but one where everyone is welcome and treated well.

Last time I went, my out-of-town guests and I were seated and then waited and waited for 15 minutes, and still no one came and took an order. Meanwhile, one guy was running crazy trying to take and serve order, while the manager and another waiter walked around looking as if they were bored senseless and looking for something to do. Bored? Well, how 'bout you take my order. It was one of the few times I up and walked out of a restaurant before even placing an order.

I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Service was good, until our waitress had to serve six other tables. She was friendly and the other waitstaff was friendly as well. The food was okay, we're not sure if it's worth going back to. Ambiance is nice and the decor was cozy. It was a little dark and hard the see our menus. The table next to us had to use a flash light. Drinks were good. I had the pear cocktail . I loved the glass they served it in. My husband had a local Widmer beer, which was nice and mild. My husband got the New York strip and it had a huge fat strip in it, which was a little disappointing for restaurant food. The Caesar salad was good, as was the beet salad. We were not offered fresh black pepper, which I love to get on my salad. The chef's cauliflower soup offering was smooth and creamy, yum! I got the rogue burger and I felt it was under seasoned and I really couldn't taste the blue cheese. I am a sucker for a good blue cheese. The fries that came with it was delish! Crispy and thin. Parking was the hardest part of coming here, but they don't really have control over that. Overall, it was slightly above average.

went here for my birthday dinner with friends. the company was great, so i had a good time, but will not return to this restaurant, unless if is just for drinks or happy hour. we went for happy hour - and they have a nice happy hour menu (though the food portions are quite small). we ended up staying for dinner, and i just cant recommend. i ordered the polenta with elk. it came with mushrooms, which i dont like, but the server told me it was not possible to have them without because they are mixed in with the polenta. i said fine, and ordered a side of sauteed greens, as well, to go with my dinner. the greens came out about 10 min before all of the entrees, which was weird. so these were cold by the time my dinner came. and then..., the mushrooms were mixed in with the polenta, but there were also a lot of mushrooms on top of the elk, which was on top of the polenta. so these definitely could have been left out, for someone who requested this dish with no mushrooms. i thought this was inconsiderate. the food was just ok. very heavy, and lots of butter in everything (even though i asked for my greens plain with no butter, there was quite a bit of butter on them). there wasnt a lot of care with the service. for example - when we first arrived, only two of the 5 of us were given menus. so i asked for three more, and she brought us one. so i got up and got two more menus for my friends. we were out of water, app plates were not taken away - just things like that. there were 5 of us, and we all had drinks, apps and entrees. the restaurant was quite slow... yet, i dont feel we received great service. decor is beautiful - but i wont go back for dinner.

We came here on Sunday for our anniversary dinner. The only positive in the whole experience was the service and the beer. Overall, a very disappointing experience. The photos on the site give it the appearance of a finer establishment than it looks like in person. There was football on the TV when we walked in the door! We got grilled flatbread with taleggio which had some fishy flavor I could not get past. As we barely touched it, she kindly took it off the bill. Our shared starter was not couscous as the name suggested, but Israeli couscous, and it was pasty at that. The house pancetta was more like jerky. My wife got the pork chop, which was supposed to be medium, I got the albacore which was supposed to be medium rare. Both were terribly overcooked. Our water bottle smelled like old dishwater. I would never consider coming back here. There's a lot of cheaper places that do the food way better.

Let me start with saying that I've never eaten dinner at 23 Hoyt, so this is a Happy Hour-only review. That being said- Happy Hour is very happy at 23 Hoyt! They are positioned on a great section of NW 23rd and if you nab a table outside you get both amazing food and a great view for people watching. Happy Hour starts at 3pm everyday so now there is more time to get happy. I love that they section the menu by price point because you can quickly get an idea of what you want and how much you want to spend. And don't fear the $1 items- there are some that are totally delicious and filling. This was my second trip to 23 Hoyt for Happy Hour and at this rate, I'll just keep going. The food is great, the service is good, and it's a total steal. If it is a beautiful day, head over there and grab a table.

Try the happy hour caesar salad (and really anything else for happy hour!) Some fancy places (and fancy is a word with lots of interpretation, but I consider 23 Hoyt to be on the fancier side) are not worth the money even with cheaper happy hour prices, but 23 Hoyt is. Yay!

I've been here a couple of times now and have been more than happy with the overall dining experience on both occasions. I stumbled on this place after the long wait at Papa Haydn sent me looking for another dining option in the same area. We were seated right away and a nice table on the lower level of the restaurant, with a nice view of the street. The menu looked interesting enough and we decided to start our meal out with the cheese and ale fondue which turned out be very tasty (a little too thin compared to the traditional kind, but it tasted great and we finished off the whole thing!). We were then given a complimentary amuse bouche (always a nice gesture) and then received our entrees. I had the Summer Vegetables, wanting to be healthy after the copious amounts of cheese I'd just ingested. It was fabulous - light and exactly the right amount of food. My fiancee had the salmon which was excellent. The second time we went we had the roasted hen and the grilled pork chop (also excellent). Both times i've been here the food has been great, the prices reasonable, and the ambiance relaxing after a long day of work. When they're busy the service could use some improvement but it certainly isn't enough to keep me from going back. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed night out with some good food and wine :)

Arrived on a Sunday, evening, hungry, thirsty, and tired. vert glamorous stunning floral disp provided with cauliflower soup courtesy of the chef we were seated immediately and most customers were dressed nicely except for us jeans and sweat shirts. The was delisous served cold and without ice just the way we like it. My lovely wife a flatbread with goatcheese, pore Ella mush room and caramelizes onios melt in your mouth and the onions melt in your mouth. Yummy! Then I had the deluxe Hoyt burger with avocado, Hoyt special sauce, tomatoes, pickles and cucumbers, yes, cucumbers. It was great and cooked just the way I asked. Well done. My only complaint were the peas because they arrived with sliced raw onions which I specifically asked the waitress not to bring. My lovely wife ordered the roasted chicken with a puree of navy beans. Outstanding! Her only complaint was the butterknife she used to cut up the tender golden chicken. it would have been better to have a sharper knife. We passes on the dessert. We were too full. Our servers name was GWEN. She was very nice and pleasant. I would come her again.

Fabulous. That pretty much says it all. Every time I come here the staff are ridiculously kind, helpful, attentive, and quick. Some of the best service in P-town. Dinner here is pricey but delicious. However, it's the 3-7pm Happy Hour that kicks some serious butt. The menu has $1, $2, $3, $4 and $5 items if you sit in the bar and the list of $5 cocktails is impressive. This is not a cheap-skate Happy Hour where you have to get a PBR and a light snack to keep it pretty inexpensive. This is hands-down an all out foodie Happy Hour spot. For $30 my date and I can enjoy a satisfying $5 entree a piece, plus a mixed drink and a few of the $2 or $3 appetizers. In my mind, it just doesn't get better than that. If $30 will provide a full meal then having a "light" happy hour for $10 is completely possible.

I met some friends here for drinks and it was wonderful. The atmosphere was cozy, warm and ambient and their cocktail list was to die for. I told the server that I liked vodka sodas but would like to try some of their house infusions, but nothing sweet. She brought me a roasted red beet vodka soda and it was perfect! We were just sitting in the bar area at a round table and I found the server to be attentive, but not in our face or pushy about ordering food/more drinks. Overall a great place, I can't wait to go back for Happy Hour, I hear it's the best!

Had dinner here the first weekend in June and am behind with my postings - meant to get this up sooner! Anyway, met up with one my best friends for dinner here and was stoked to check the place out after many times walking by it and hearing good things. First off, the decor is great. It's a mix between contemporary minimalism and country chic. It's the right blend of cool NW 23rd and hip fanciness, but doesn't go so far as to make a typical Portlander (in shorts on a hot day) feel out of place. Taking a peek at the drink menu, the variety of options was just right - not too much, not too little. I opted for a couple of local beers, which our waiter, Beau, helped me pick. I wanted something "cold" (that's about all I told him!) given the temperature, and based on just a couple questions from me, he was able to pinpoint exactly what I was looking for. Genius! When my friend showed up saying she needed a drink STAT (thanks to the Portland traffic), he again knew exactly what she needed. Double genius. Bonus points because he didn't make us feel idiotic for not knowing every type of craft beer on the planet. From there we enjoyed some amazing cauliflower soup, compliments of the chef. What a surprise! Free and fantastic! That made me want to try all the soups in the place. My friend said the same. Flash forward to ordering our entree. Now, Beau had it down as far as letting my friend and I gab and chat - no pressure to order now (typical of so many places). Loved it! After telling us the specials and answering some of our random questions, Beau helped us decide. I went with the house specialty burger. The fries were fantastic, although the burger's size made it a little interesting (and entertaining to my friend no doubt) to eat;) My friend went with a pasta dish and, while she didn't love it, she continued to rave about how well Beau was at recommending drinks. We both said we wanted to hire him to bartend (or at least consult!) for our next party. Next up was dessert. Now, I don't typically order dessert when eating out, but Beau charmed his way into getting us to order more! That and the donuts he described sounded amazing (btw, we also loved our appetizer, the fondue with apple and ale). The dessert was yummy and just the right size - not too much, but just enough. All in all, a great night. Dinner went long, but I didn't mind a bit since I can talk a lot and enjoy the nice change in getting to enjoy my food and company - which many places don't seem to let you do! Plus, my friends and I just talk a lot - so we're always a little slow (and love when our wait staff understands!). Whoever trained Beau at 23Hoyt should get an Olympic gold for his blend of charm, presence and consulting skill, not to mention the other staff members we encountered while dining - all professional, super nice and just pleasant. Cheers!

We were in luck stopping here on a Saturday afternoon right after 3 and discovering the happy hour specials. A one drink minimum is required, but not a problem. The featured happy hour beer is $3, while their hour featured cocktails are $5, but really you can just get a soda. We had their ridiculously good $1 fries w/the whole grain mustard aioli. The shoestring fries were crisp and seasoned well, while the aioli was addictive. The chicken confit nuggets came with pickled onions and cucumbers and a tasty bbq sauce. If you've had these nuggets, you'll never eat any processed nugget again. The salmon cakes were great took, no filler, but more deep fried than a usual salmon cake. They were really good and sat on top of a fresh green bean salad dressed w/dill, parsley and lemon. I'd definitely go back. The tables next to us had the olives, charcuterie plate, mussels, caesar salad, pasta, slider and pickles. If I go back, I'll try the olives and mussels and get the salmon and chicken nuggets again. Service was ok. They were attentive when they were there.

This place has good collection of wine, contemporary drinks, classy cocktails and IPAs. Ambience is cosy and nice. They have mastered all aspects of fine dining including ridiculously small portions. I believe this place is good for happy hour and drinks, but I would avoid dining.

My first review of this restaurant was removed, reason, "lacks a substantive consumer experience". The food is ok, the burger is not the best or the worst. The selection is limited and the prices are unreasonable for what you are getting, unless you are eating happy hour. And most importantly their other restaurants are much better than this one. The atmosphere is nice and the service is fair but nothing worth going out of your way for.

I'm a little surprised at 23 Hoyt's marginal ratings. Their happy hour burgers are out of this world in terms of value. I have come here so many times. I guess it could be true that portland is getting tired of some of these places that brought high end cuisine here, after all the foodscape is rapidly evolving here. But I feel like I have to give credit where credit is due with 23 Hoyt. The location is great, unlike some reviewers, I've always thought the environment was pretty solid. Their presentation is always nice, maybe not the rarest thing you've ever seen, but always good. The seafood offerings are always well done, soups have been a strong point in the past. And I suppose I can't testify for the current bartender, as I haven't had a cocktail here in a little while, but for the course of a few years prior to this one, I was a semi regular on their martinis and spanish coffee- they definitely can't be faulted!

LOVED this place. A friend and I randomly met for dinner on a Monday night and I couldn't have been more pleased! We were immediately greeted by our server who remained attentive and welcoming the entire meal. She was everything a waitress should be. My friend and I ordered the cheese and ale fondue and the roasted beet salad. Both were impeccably presented and wonderfully flavorful. So delicious! It also happened to be a tasting night so we were given two additional side dishes--fresh bread with ricotta cheese spread and creamy cauliflower soup--both compliments of the chef! Who doesn't LOVE free food? Plus, the extra sides were very, very gooood. For a swanky lounge/bar/restaurant, it was super cozy and the lighting was perfect--not too dark, not too bright. Completely unpretentious--especially, since I was totally a scrub at work that day. I didn't feel at all out of place. Um, and did I mention the playlist they had playing?! The Black Keys, The XX, Jimmy Eat World and Arcade Fire. Yes, they were all included. I was like, "Whaaaaa?!" Again, loved this place. Five stars. YES.

It's unfortunate this place is getting a bad review, I had pretty high hopes. I had a friend visiting from California and I've heard this restaurant was pretty good, so I gave it a try. We shared the beet salad which was pretty reasonable, except the dressing was a bit salty and not very balanced, but the beets were perfect. For the main course, we both decided to have the fried chicken, which sounded SO good, but when we started eating it, my friend asked what i thought, and i stated it needed more flavor and/or salt, he agreed. It was possibly the most bland food I've had at an actual restaurant. The Potatoes were pretty flavorful, but cold, as well as the braised greens, I think they both sat on the plate waiting for the chicken to finish cooking. We sat outside and the server, who was super nice, forgot about us then we were finished, we sat for 15 minutes before the server returned with the dessert menu and check, but I know these things happen, and we were in no hurry, but it defered us from wanting dessert and went elsewhere for that. All in all, would not order the chicken again not would i recommend the Restaurant, but I may try something else there sometime, maybe they just forget to season the flour for the chicken batter. IT WAS SO BAD.

I love this place! Its so great in the summer time to sit outside, and enjoy a nice glass of wine. They have a great Happy Hour and reasonable pricing. Our service was great and our server was very attentive. The food was very good and we kept ordering more and more as we sat there. I would go back again for more good food and wine!

This is my favorite restaurant in town to go to by myself and splurge just a little bit. :) The food is excellent, staff are friendly and they have a decent happy hour. The last time I ate there I had an excellent roast chicken (the skin was delicious and crisp) served with tiny dumplings and vegetables along with an excellent red wine recommended by the knowledgeable bartender. I felt very comfortable sitting at the bar and taking my time to enjoy my meal. It is a little expensive for me. Dinner, 2 glasses of wine, dessert and coffee set me back about $50 before tip. But that's not out of the realm of reasonable but it is a splurge for me.

Went out with the bf and another couple last night to 23 Hoyt. I had never even heard of the place until I received the invite. Great space very open and breezy lots of casual seating and good natural lighting. We each had a round of cocktails to start off with. The waiter brought us some bread and ricotta cheese (fantastic). The bread was warm fresh and fragrant and the ricotta was a nice touch. We all placed our orders for dinner. I had the baked chicken breast with gnocchi and wild mushroom (delicious) the chicken was moist and tender the wild mushroom succulent and the gnocchi perfect. One of my companions had the fried chicken with Yukon potatoes and collard greens. The bf had the Pacific rock fish with marble potatoes, oyster mushrooms and fava beans. Lastly my other dinner companion had the NY strip steak with green beans (haricot verts) potatoes and bordelaise. Now I can't speak for anyone other than myself but we went through that food faster than our first round of cocktails and cleaned our plates. The portions are perfectly sized. All I really have to say is if this is new bar cuisine then I am a fan. I was very happy not to see a single overly deep fried tater tot anywhere in sight. I would have to say the only problem I saw was the ugly t.v. hanging over the bar with the sound pumped up to where we were seated.

During my time in NYC, I may have earned the reputation of "drunch expert" among my group of friends. Naturally, I needed to find a good drunch spot in Portland after moving here. Enter 23 Hoyt. The $2 mimosas alone enticed me to check it out. The mimosas are great, and the food is delicious! Not to mention that the staff is so friendly and attentive. I've been back several times since then, and so far, it's my favorite drunch spot. Another bonus is that it's a quiet, spacious environment, and reservations typically aren't necessary (though I wouldn't try showing up without one if you have a party larger than 8).

I can't quite put my finger on what will probably keep me from coming back. The ambiance and the wine were good, I'll say that for sure. When I arrived, I was greeted immediately but they couldn't find my reservation. No biggie since they had a table. The wait staff just seemed stressed out, and even though I felt like my server was attentive, I still got the feeling that he would rather be somewhere else. I chose the rockfish based on his recommendation and that was a big disappointment. The fish itself was decent, but the bulgur was a little bland, and it came with two dollops of tomato (sauce? salsa?). Whatever it was, it did not go well with the dish. My salad was nice and I was pleasantly surprised by the house wine. It's not like I had a horrible experience, but if I'm going to pay $50 for dinner in that neighborhood, next time I'll head over to Serratto or Paley's instead.

Good atmosphere and vibe. Solid food and decent prices, but nothing that was truly unique IMO. Drink selection was good and the bartender knew how to make the drinks. Overall a pretty good experience with friends for a night out.

Went today for Sunday brunch with the family. The food is good, hearty and has great taste! I love the atmosphere and the urban setting as well. However the service was lacking. We did have a larger party of 7, but the place wasn't very busy. When we ordered a second round of drinks when our food was brought out, we didn't get the drinks until we were basically done eating. (We had to remind our server more than once.) Also ordered an extra side and it was never brought out but we were billed for it. I'm going to try this place another time as I think their food is good and we just got stuck with an inexperienced server.

I went to 23Hoyt about three years ago and was sorely disappointed. I will pay any amount of money for well thought out, happily prepared, beautifully presented food that tastes good. So, I was very upset about having spent $90 for a seriously boring dinner on a "let's grab a bite" kinda night. This leads me to say I AM SO GLAD they changed their whole direction and improved just about everything: decor, food, music, service even and the "new tavern" concept they adopted. It's really lovely in there, and as far as I've seen everything else has fallen into place in a good way. Tonight, we went just for a quick happy hour. I was excited to be there again. Their happy hour menu is quite expansive--there are about two dozen items from small (marinated olives, fried green beans), medium (beet salad, mussels) and large (spaghetti, burgers). It's all organized by price and quite generous! Happy hours with 4 or 5 items can get old, so you probably won't get tired of this HH menu unless you literally go there everyday (and that would still take some time). One thing that I enjoy about HH is the quickie-aspect of the meal, and they do a good job of satisfying this need as well. Our quickie date/meal began with the marinated olives--an assortment of big and small that I cannot name but tasty. Bread & butter--which actually came with olive oil, but I love a good olive oil and the bread was delish. Beets & goat cheese--simple, because some of the best things are. The Caesar salad--on the garlicky side but who doesn't love garlic? The romaine is served whole & uncut which I love and the dressing is strong which it should be. The spaghetti w/ bacon (they didn't overcook the bacon to a crisp--yay!) was coated w/ parmesan, olive oil and tossed w/ wilted kale--I liked this a lot. The mussels were in a smoked tomato & [light] cream sauce. I only like the smoked taste w/ heavier meats but this was just divine and slurp-worthy. Sopping up the rest of the broth with the rustic bread was just as good as the mussel--yumzers. For drinks we had the No Bull--bourbon w/ Cock N Bull ginger beer and lime juice and the house red wine. First, the bourbon drink was really good! I love sweet-ish bourbon drinks. And as for the house red--"house" wines are getting to be so good these days! So, that was our experience tonight. In just 45 minutes we decided we really, really like this place this time. It's a new favorite HH spot and I'll be happy to try dinner there again. I'll be back to tell you about that...

For the price and location, I expected something pretty nice. Instead I found the dishes to be overpriced (even on the happy hour menu), rather small plates, food that was just okay, and service that was stupidly slow when the place was only half full. As one example, we ordered a drink, waiter left. Waiter walked by later and we ordered some food. Some time later, food arrived. Some time later, after we finished the food, we flagged a passing waiter and asked about that drink we ordered (remember that?). Ahh, finally it showed. Of course, by this time we were done and ready to pay. Sigh. We had multiple experiences like that. What a drag! And to top it all off, it turns out the menu on their web site is six months out of date. Next time, I'll settle for New Old Lompoc rather than come back here.

I went to 23 Hoyt for Brunch on Mother's day. I told my family I wanted to go someplace with reservations, so I wouldn't have to partake of restaurant chaos that happens on Mother's day. We got there a few minutes early, and our table was waiting for us. I shared the mimosa for two with my daughter in law and my son had a two dollar mimosa and my husband had a bloody mary. So far so good. For food, my son had the eggs benedict, because that is his breakfast food of choice. I had the build your own omelet, which was good, but I would have liked to add a few more ingredients. My daughter in law had the house omelet and my husband had the sweet potato hash . Everything was OK, but the food seemed a little underwhelming. I thought the service was great. Our server was very friendly and she seemed happy to be working there. I will go back, but I think I have enjoyed dinner better than brunch.

I think this place is slightly (completely) overrated. The food is overpriced for the quality. The service is decent, but it seems like you're paying more for so they can make rent than for a dining experience.

I wrote a review of 23Hoyt's Sunday brunch recently. I found the food less than satisfying and the service a bit absent. I posted it to this site and, within a few days, the customer service manager contacted me and offered to make it up to me! Now that's what I call good customer service. Rarely is a business so responsive and so willing to hear criticism and react appropriately. I've always had great experiences at Bruce Carey restaurants, ever since the days of Zefiro. I'm glad to see that my one bad experience at 23Hoyt is not indicative of a general degradation of their usually high standard. Five stars for great customer service.

Took the family to 23 Hoyt and had a great meal. My kids are picky and they loved it here. Really good Happy Hour menu that was available in the main dining area too. Some of the highlights were the bacon, egg and cheese deviled eggs, the seared steak bites, and the tempura fried green beans with spicy aioli. We also had the artisan cheese sampler, delish!

"Sunday brunch was delicious. We had pouched eggs over sweet potato hash, cranberries, and mine had bacon while his had fennel sausage. Wheat toast with chunky jam and we were loving every bite. They were busy and we still had great service. We sat outside because of the inside nose level. Would defnately return.

The Ice cream was a 5/5 Otherwise Happy Hour is NO WAY the best happy hour in P town! I read that soemwhere and I can't disagree more. The burger was not that cheap and not that good. The happy hour prices are really not that much of a bargain compare to the regular menu. Nice interior, good service. Still.....over rated!

Went for happy hour last night. The food was legit but the drinks were just ok. We ordered the tempura mushrooms, steak bites, and the special, which was spaghetti in a cream sauce with asparagus and mushrooms. The steak bites were cooked and seasoned just right. The cream sauce was light but flavorful. I would definitely come back for their happy hour food. Now, let's talk about the drinks. I'm not saying they were bad, I'm just not saying they were great. I had the Mexican Firing Squad but it was mostly ice. The ice was literally sticking out past the rim of the glass. Disappointing, to say the least. To make matters worse, I could barely taste the tequila. I'm not paying 6 bucks for that thing again. Also, I seem to remember only seeing 3 different cocktails on their happy hour menu. 3!?! Really? Oh ya, the service was great. We were greeted and seated right away, yadda yadda blah blah blah. I'll be back for the food but the Mexican Firing Squad will have to wait.

Mixed bag from our happy hour visit. $5 burger came with a pile of very good fries and was quite tasty. The $1 house pickles were a great accompaniment. Others ordered (and I sampled) the $3 roasted beets and goat cheese (very good), the $5 spaghetti with garlic, kale, bacon & parmesan (OK) and the $5 steak bites with chimichurri (meh - lacking anything admirable in the way of flavor or texture). The $5 house red (sangiovese) was just fine. I'll likely return and try again.

This place is AWEFUL!! I'd give it 0 stars if I could. Service is nonexistent, the staff is completely inattentive, and the food is horrible & completely inedible. The food is way overpriced, especially for the quality, quantity & options. We sat down and I ordered a beer. You'd think a place that looks decent would be able to bring you, let's say, a simple glass for that beer. Well looks can be deceiving. The server came & dropped a can of beer on the table & walked away. Yes, a can. Seriously!? Furthermore, we ordered food and literally EVERYTHING was deep fried & dripping in grease. If I wanted that I would've gone to McDonalds & paid 1/4 the price. Don't waste your time or money here, there are plenty other, more delicious places in NW to eat/drink/have a good time.

I went there on a weekend night. It was fairly busy, a really attractive waiter took us to a table and gave us water. It took almost 15 minutes before someone came with menus and to ask for our drinks (even though there several employees going around, one lady for the water, one to run the food, one to chat with the manager, but no one to take orders). We asked the lady who took our order what the daily special was in it took her 10 minutes to go to the kitchen and find out. The croutons on the salad were soggy. We asked for dessert menus but after waiting for 20 minutes, we decided to just pay what little we had and leave. The place itself is really nice, lights, decorations, etc. The location will definitely help that place stay open longer than it should, but if the cute host wants to make more money on tips, his coworkers will have to be at least decent.

Came here to celebrate my friend's 25th birthday and fell in love with everything at the restaurant. 23 Hoyt is a New American type of restaurant located by the Alphabet district in Portland. This restaurant totally fits in this neighborhood. The restaurant's environment is a mesh between modern chic with a hint of nature here and there. Overall it is a pleasing place to be either on a date or enjoying your meal with good buddies. I had the honor to sample their Roasted Chicken which I must say was cooked exquisitely well. It was very moist and tender. Every bite was scrumptious and delightful. The chicken was complimented with chunky pieces of bacon, squash, green beans and potato like dumplings. I would definitely order this dish again if I were to do this all over again. A couple of friends had raved that their Caesar Salad was quite the best in town. As much as I also wanted to order that to my meal, I decided to save that dish for my next trip since I wanted something savory for dinner. Other pals had also raved that the HH is pretty good as well. I am quite impressed with 23 Hoyt. We had great service and the food was great. I will be back for happy hour and to also try their Caesar Salad!

I dig it. but only from 3-7 pm, when the food is cheap and the drinks are easy. My meal at 7 pm that night: $5 salmon cakes- two fancy looking 2" salmon pieces fried, battered, and turned crispy. Served with a sauce I didn't take notice of. $5 pepper infused vodka mixed with mango juice- tasted like the mexican powdered candy "Lucas", no joke! but it was one of my favorite indulgences as a younger me so the drink hit the spot. $5 spaghetti- awwwright. Your basic spaghetti with a garlic& butter sauce, topped with bits of bacon and spinach. a bit bland, but a good filler. My buddies OD'ed on the clams& mussels and ordered the burger. The clams& mussels came in a huge portion (~10-12 pieces) and were only $4. If you ever want a quick &cheap seafood fix, hit the clams, they came with a light buttery sauce!! The burger was a good deal & came with an amount of fries bigger than your head. I stole a bite, and it was pretty tasty (not too dry & cooked medium well). The service was excellent and kind. I had a big group and they accommodated us on patio tables outside. I took a look inside and they only had a few tables reserved for happy hour; the rest were for dinner only. They don't take reservations for happy hour either- sad news! luckily for us, the weather was lovely and when it got darker, the shops of 23rd ave &trees all lit up.

Stopped by at happy hour, the place was empty. Our server was friendly and efficient. the road crew outside was the entertainment and preformed better than the food. Our pleasant server offered us a number of recommendations from the long list of menu items (she liked fried, fried and more fried) we picked a few of her fried favorites and a couple others. Shoestring potatoes were fabulous for a buck and by far the only thing I'd re-order. Next up the green beans in tempura batter leaking grease and tasting greasy spoon good until they got cool. Onion rings on a huge plate piled pile high, dressed in oil or possibly used as a gasket in some bizarre kitchen contraption? Beets and goat cheese salad had no flavor, served so cold my teeth froze. Charcuterie platter had a nice assortment of meat, unfortunately oddly flavored enough to take away any real enjoyment. Not heading back for seconds although the road work on 23rd was fun to watch while getting good and greasy.

A late nite burger was very tasty. The overflowing dish of fries, pickles and tomatoes it came with was impressive. But, I was not impressed with the draft beer selection. Their space is cozy but noisey like most Portland Restaurants. The service was attentive.

Excellent!!! The district itself is awesome! Beautiful with all the lights at night. Great place a large party, excellent service, awesome food. Food: Happy Hour is WORTH YOUR MONEY!!! From pretty drinks to all kinds of food! I didn't order any drinks but the rest of my table did, and the drinks were all amazing looking. Non-alcoholic beverages tasted pretty good too! Menu starts from 1-4. We had clam cook in wine, muscle in tomato sauce, spaghetti with kale and bacon and cheese, burger, best onion ringsI've ever tasted, fried green beans, lentil soup, and so much more!. It was ALL amazing and delicious!!! This is a must go for happy hour and a great place for a date as well! Fantastic atmosphere, LOVE IT!! We're going there again this weekend. We arrived at Happy Hour (by the way no reservation for HH) with 15 people and their service was so good to put together tables for us outside (it was a nice sunny day). Service, excellent, at 7:00PM, which is the exact time HH is over, they still were willing to take about 10 more orders or so for us. If you know your party is going to be loud, I'd suggest sit outside, especially if the weather is great, you'll get to enjoy all that's around you. Down note: There is a service fee for bringing in your own cake. However, they will cut it and serve it for you. But still, it was pretty amazing service! Parking sucks, so bring a small car, but hey, an area that cool, I'd be willing to look around for parking. Looking for a cool, slightly upscale, yet still cheap eat, go here for Happy Hour!! I've been to several other HH places, and this one is the best of all.

Pasta is excellent and meats are cooked to perfection. Other fare is very fresh. I like bringing friends and family to this place as the food is predictably great, decent wine list and the sound level is relatively low....no shouting at each other to be heard. We're not big foodies, but have been around enough to know a good thing. 23 Hoyt is a good thing.

Stick with the fantastic happy hour. Each time I go for dinner, I like 23 Hoyt. But the compliment wagon stops at "like." The atmosphere is beautiful - the "green" feeling inside is much calmer than the "orange" of the prior tenant Balvo. And yes, the waiters know everything about everything, from the origination of the wine, to the art work on the walls. They maintain that enjoyable mix of being unpretentious yet exceptionally knowledgeable. But when I, or more so, someone else, is going to spend $35+ on one plate of food - not to mention the $8-15 glass of wine, $17 appetizer, and $12 dessert - I expect dang near perfection. And unfortunately, I have not experienced anything close to it during my visits to 23 Hoyt. The food takes a curiously long time to arrive - I mean, I know it's fresh, but it's not like they have to run out to the coast and fish for my ahi tuna! And while I'm not one to complain about small potions (I eat like a hummingbird), I would warn that even I need an appetizer along with my main course...and whoops...there's $50! The food, atmosphere, and service at 23 Hoyt is good, not great. Like I mentioned before - take advantage of all this during the Happy Hour for an experience and price that is much more reasonable.

I live around the corner and made a few stops at 23 & Hoyt since moving to Portland... The atmosphere and food is pretty awesome!! I've had their Salmon and the short ribs/steak a few times!!! Perfectly prepared "melt in your mouth". The staff is warm and welcoming, always coming around checking water/bread until the meal gets there. Good place for groups or couples. Really chill place. The price is pretty good for the food quality and environment.. Sorry, to the other yelper.. seems like they went on an off night. I am def going back in the near future!!!

Just a passing glance through the window had me curious about this snazzy looking wine bar/lounge. Food was pretty solid, with nice creative touches (We had the Hoyt burger and charcuterie plate). The only thing lacking was the service. We were passed off between multiple servers. All in all, a decent stop .

During a day of shopping around NW 21 and 23rd a friend and I stopped in to 23 Hoyt for some food and happy hour. It was a friday and the place was pretty much empty...should have taken note of that. We ordered a few items and really the only thing that is worth mentioning is the mac and cheese, i mean its hard to mess up boats loads of cheese and noodles. So while the mac and cheese was not superb it was still good enough to finish. I live in SE p-town and do not eat downtown and in the NW district to often and thats probably because its more expensive to eat out on the other side of the river. The drinks tasted just fine the overall experience here was sorta bland.

Best bartenders and servers, excellent customer service -- always on their toes to ensure that each and every guest is provided with what they want-- truly exceptional and friendly staff. Erin, Allison, Matt and others (which I don't remember all their names) are absolutely great at their job, happy hour and brunch are amazing. Its the very welcoming atmosphere that makes this place so popular.

The drinks were strong and simple. The food was good, plentiful and inexpensive at happy hour. The ambiance was a cross between a clean industrial feel and an antique store. The service was peculiar. Stopping in for the happy hour, we ordered off of the $1-$5 "snacks" selections. An order of onion rings, a ramekin of house-made pickles and a burger on a brioche bun with delicious thin fries. The cocktails were reasonably priced and didn't try too hard. Simple is often best. But back to the service. I don't think the staff likes having happy hour. Maybe it's because I'm part of the unsavory poorer crowd who think that keeping a bit of stubble on your chin makes you look just older than your 9th grade school ID picture to be taken seriously. I'm really not sure. At some points they were nice and helpful. At others they were not there or trying to confuse other patrons into not ordering off of the happy hour menu. Who knows. But the food is delicious and well-priced. So maybe they were just having an off day. It happens.

I've had decent service here, but it's rare, especially recently. Last time it took more than half an hour before we were even acknowledged by any of the staff. Great happy hour menu. Though the recent expansion did bump the prices, everything is still very affordable. The dinner menu, however, is overpriced and overly pretentious for the quality of the food.

I've eaten here before with my wife with the other menu- highly prefer the other menu versus "new american tavern" for dinner. Judging by other reviewers, the happy hour is great, but I would recommend another restaurant if you are looking for a nice dinner out. I had the salmon, and it was salty and overcooked, and my wife had the ribeye, which was tough to chew, even with it cooked med rare. Also, they don't have very many glasses of wine by the glass and the one I had was subpar. On a good note- fantastic onion rings

Visiting portland from Southern Califonia this weekend. We were wondering around 23rd street looking for some breakfast/brunch. We came across 23 Hoyt , they were busy so we figured they must be good, boy were we miss lead. They didnt have any tables available without a reservation, understandable, it was Easter Sunday. We did get a bar top table. The seats were horribly uncomfortable and the table really wobbly. Service was fine but the food took forever, agian busy easter Sunday I get it. Was just hoping the food would be worth the wait. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with home fries, sandwich was bland and dry 2 bites was more then enough. The home fries were fine , alittle spicy but I like spice. My husband odered the Eggs benedict 2 bites for him was too much . He said the sauce was just really off putting and he eates Eggs Benedict often. My 20 year old ordered Biscuits and gravy. She didnt finish those either the biscuits were hard and the gravy just fine. I will tell you I gave it one star because the Grapefruit Mimosa I order was yummy.

We went in for Sunday brunch. The food was original and tasty, and the service was good. I had Hoyt Hash and my wife had eggs with bacon and house potatoes. There were little touches that set each item off. We also tried the donut holes (served with a chocolate sauce on the side); they were great after you tapped the extra sugar off.

2.5 stars, if we're splitting hairs here. This was an interesting experience. I had dinner with a very dear friend, so the evening was enjoyable and this review will be pretty mellow. Had this been a first date, or even an acquaintance that I didn't know very well, my meal at 23 Hoyt would have gone from mildly amusing to nightmarishly awkward in the blink of an eye. When I got to the restaurant the waiter decisively recommended a drink for me, which I liked. There was no doubt to him which drink I should have, and he was right! Claudette's Makeover (as it was called) was very nice and refreshing. Not life changing, but good. A few minutes later he dropped by to see if we were ready to order, but my friend and I needed a little longer to decide. With a smile he told us no problem, he'd be right back. But then, he was just....gone. 45 minutes later, we had still not been approached to have our order taken. Conversation was flowing freely, and it became a running joke between my dinner mate and myself- how long will it take before our waiter comes back? The restaurant was not busy by any means- maybe six or seven tables and at least three waiters between them- but we were completely ignored. Finally I had to leave to feed the parking meter, and when I came back the waiter popped on over to ask what we'd like for dinner. When the question was posed as to whether he'd recommend the vegetable medley or the polenta special for the evening, his response was "oh I don't know, I'm a meat eater." A word to the wise, customer service people: know your menu. You don't have to like what's on it, but pretend that you do. And when asked for recommendations between two dishes, give the customer what they're asking for: a little guidance. Don't like vegetables? Fake it. Haven't tried it? Act like you have. This is an industry in which honesty is very rarely the best policy. 3 hours later (no joke), our meal finally ended. The service did not get any less sluggish as the night wore on, but when he DID show up the waiter was very friendly and sweet. Ambiance is enjoyable, almost giving one the sensation that you're seated outdoors with the pile of firewood and antlers above the entrance and the myriad of trees inside, decorated with twinkly lights. It was a very comfortable place to simply sit and relax, which was good since there was plenty of time to do exactly that while waiting for our meal. The night was definitely defined by the pleasant company and conversation, but shouldn't a restaurant add to that enjoyable experience?

Yummy food. Yeah, its a bit pricey but whateva, you're in the NW. Food is good, with varied options. We enjoyed the pistachio/white bean bruschetta, lamb ragu, and chicken with polenta. Glad its in the hood.

Just an all- around disappointment. Although, our server was great. The food was really below expectations and the management dispassionate. My friend had to send something back. But Saucebox is over-hyped too and I am wondering if these people should stick to the high- end BlueHour and ClarkLewis type places where they definitely excel and leave the mid- range behind, because they are definitely not doing it right. **Update: went back tonight for happy hour and was completely satisfied. Great menu with lots of vegetarian options. The Anthem cider was superb as was the service. Changes have been made in operations and I will be frequenting this establishment because of them!

Our party of four -- the only people dining on a Sunday evening -- was treated curtly. When, midmeal, the lights were suddenly dimmed to such a low level that we had problems seeing our food and asked (very politely) if they could be turned back up, our waiter told us that the owner wanted them dimmed! There were no vegetarian options -- not even close -- and NO green vegetables available. There was pecan pie on the menu, but we were informed that it "hadn't gelled" and that it "might" be gelled by the following day. An incredibly terrible, and comparatively expensive, dining experience. Would never, ever return to this restaurant.

Like many other reviews of this place, my sister, brother-in-law and I came here for happy hour. Take note that they seem to only offer happy hour on fridays and saturdays (at least during the period i was there). To start off, there is a one drink minimum - that wasn't a problem. What did we get? 1.Battered Fried Green Beans & Spicy Mayo Very very lightly battered; it may have been overly fried, I'm not quite sure. The batter was so brittle that it was just breaking off form the green beans itself. I would have liked for it to at least stay together, but the tradeoff is the crunchy texture. Spicy mayo was your run-of-the-mill spicy mayo. Fair enough. 2. Tempura Mushrooms & Ponzu After eating Portobello Fries at Bottega Louie in downtown Los Angeles the week before, I had high expectations, and this did not disappoint. 3. Onion Rings & Caper-Red Onion Aioli Don't quite remember............ Roasted Beets & Goat Cheese The goat cheese was wonderful and definitely a great pairing with the beets. 4. B.L.T. Slider 5. Steak Bites with Chimichurri The most memorable thing about this dish was the QUANTITY. As with the rest of the dishes, the quantity given on each dish was much more than those given at other restaurant happy hours. I noticed however, that these steak bites were a bit chewy; I realized on my last piece that the piece was only lightly seared, i.e. essentially rare. the chimichurri was good though. 6. Salmon Cakes, Green Beans & Remoulade 7. Spaghetti with Garlic, Kale, Bacon & Parmesan A bit on the plain side, but a welcome accompaniment to the rest of the dishes we ordered. 8. Burger - White Cheddar, Aioli, Brioche Bun This came with a huge side of fries; do not order an extra order of the dollar fries if you order the burger, unless you really love fries or you're in a large group. The burger itself was a great deal at 5 bucks; juicy and flavorful. I saw a person at the bar who ordered this alone with a drink for dinner. I had started this review before I went to a few happy hour places in Los Angeles, I have subsequently changed my rating for this place from a 4 to 5. The quantity and overall higher-than-average-quality will surely be getting my business again when I get my next chance to visit Portland.

Lousy choice if you are looking for a family friendly restaurant. The burger on the kids menu is an absolute joke. Dryer than the Sahara and impossible for a kid to eat (about 6 inches tall with the too large of a bun and a burger patty that looks more like a meatball than a hamburger. Obviously the chef is childless.

Went for late night (for Portland anyway) drinks and nibbles on 23rd. Service in the bar was great, very cute host/waiter who went out of his way to make sure we were happy with our wine selection. We closed the place down with nary a sideway glance. Can't wait to go back!

They recently redid their happy hour and have made some good improvements. The food was very good for the price and so were the drinks. When we were there, there was some party happening so we were forced to sit in the "bar" area, which wasn't bad, just a little small. Not really a good area if you have a group wanting to enjoy happy hour.

We lucked out to snag a Valentine's evening reservation for just after our Salsa lesson at Viscount. Arriving early, we sat down in the sexy, contemporary bar area and had a cocktail (she) and glass of Cabernet (me). Our waiter, Cory, was the first of a night full of fabulous attention by servers. Sexy music, candles, great art...it was a perfect setting for us. After about 30 minutes (our choice), our hostess brought us up the stairs to the very intimate candle-lit balcony that overlooks the lounge and christmas light filled trees of Nw 23rd. She ordered the beet salad and cauliflower soup. I chose the iceberg salad with buttermilk dressing and blue cheese and the rack of lamb. Our waitress, Haley, recommended a terrific wine and brought us our salads, then soup and lamb, and took the time to chat whenever we wanted. It was an unhurried, sexy scene with simply mouth-watering food. Oy, my mashed potatoes and green beans...SOOOO good. And the lamb--I had to share it with my wife and, between her soup and our salads and that scrumptious lamb..well, one of our finest meals in Portland. We'd probably passed 23 Hoyt a couple dozen times over the years. Wow, were we missing something!! And the whole thing was only $60. Wow.

I came here for a birthday dinner and thought it fit the crowd pretty well. I'd say proper dress code for this place is slacks and leather polished shoes. However, any clean cut appearance would fit alright. The food was alright. Nothing spectacular. A little spendy but well spent for it's classy, clean-cut environment.

I love this place for happy hour! They have lots of really cheap items (fries for $1). I've had the chicken con fit, blt slider and fries, all around $3-5. They were all really good. I've also had dinner there before... some chicken dish which was really delicious too, if a little greasy. The weird thing about this place is that depending on the night/bar tender their drinks taste totally different. i had several mixed drinks that didn't even resemble the ones i had other nights. none of them were bad though.

I like 23Hoyt for their happy hour menu and drinks. Lots of delicious options and big ol portions. They get really busy and the happy hour "area" is small. Also the service can be a little attitudy but its ok as long as they keep the snacks coming.

this place is severely fancy, and more than a little hoity-toity. i'm not talking $60 meals (though with 2 drinks and an app or dessert, it could easily run you that much), but folks are all spiffed up, there are only beautiful people here, the waiters are reserved yet obsequious and well, it's certainly expensive. the decor is like what i'd want in my house on mars--surprisingly organic and filled with the mementos of someone's fabulous life. and the ceiling in the back quadrant on the first floor reminds me of tetris. that said, it was a pretty good meal. we all enjoyed our food, though we all skipped drinks, apps, and desserts in favor of not blowing our entire wad for the evening in a single sitting. the steak was pretty fabulous and actually cooked rare, something hard to find here in p-ville. my spatzle with rabbit was extremely flavorful, but not overpowering. and the salad/gnocchi eater thought her stuff was good, but maybe not worth $20. overall our opinion is that it was a pretty well-done upscale eatery, in fact, too upscale for us (though we got no worse reception for walking in without reservations, wearing jeans, at 7pm on a wednesday)--i'd probably just skip down to papa haydn's next time for slightly better food, much better dessert selection, and the feeling that it's not trying quite as hard to be hip.

My husband and I just ate here for our 2 year wedding anniversary. I had heard good things about it and really love the sibling restaurants. The color scheme and overall vibe is fantastic (not surprising given the other restaurants) and the staff friendly. We were seated upstairs for our 6pm reservation. The hostess sat us at the table right next to three people already dining (with no others up there). This would normally bother me but it was made even worse by the 20-something (not that I have anything against 20 somethings) from the east coast dining with her parents while she spoke loudly and pretentiously. However, our server was fantastic and she recommended the fatoush salad, which I could have easily eaten 10 of. I had the Roasted Alaskan halibut with sauce vierge, which was good and different (tomatoes, shallots, garlic, tarragon, chives, parsley, lemon and olive oil) but not the best I've had in Portland. My husband had the Sauteed Idaho Trout in breadcrumbs with dill-horseradish cream. He liked it but didn't love it. For dessert, we shared the Gelato Affogato, which was amazing...then again, how do you screw up espresso and ice cream?! I guess I had just heard so many amazing things I was expecting a lot more. The food was good, no doubt about it, and the service and ambiance fantastic. We will probably eat here again but I'll try to remember not to get my hopes too high next time.

Great atmosphere, great location but food was not so great. Dinner was good but we found mold in our dessert which was apple pie, yes after we had taken a few bites! We told our waitress who then just brought us another piece. This was the last thing we wanted. No manager came up to say sorry or anything. Very bad way to end dinner. Would never go back. If you are up on 23rd and you want a martini this place might be worth a shot. Don't recommend eating anything cause obviously they have a dirty kitchen.

We felt like we were in the episode in Seinfeld where he tries to rent the car. I wish I could tell you how the food was but seeing that we walked out at 8:40PM even though we had an 8PM reservation you can tell this did not go well. What I can say is that the staff was disinterested in us for why I can't really say. We were dressed nice and appeared just like all the other patrons. But even after we checked twice on the status of our table no one ever walked over of their own accord to tell us what was going on. Only as we were leaving did the hostess apologize and say that our table was just now being cleaned up. And it wasn't until it was very evident we were leaving that she offered to pay for our drinks (which we already paid for) and then offered to send my friend a gift certificate. To me they could have saved the situation by insisting we stay and promising that they'd take care of us. What makes them think I'm going to waste another moment trying to eat there again. They wasted 50 minutes directly as I got there at 7:50PM not to mention the 15 minutes beforehand trying to find parking. It would take more than a free meal to think I'm coming back. "Anybody can TAKE the reservation...its about HOLDING the reservation." 2nd getting a drink out of the bar was impossible. I consider myself pretty understanding about places being busy. But 10 minutes wait before someone asked me what I wanted to drink and another 10 minute wait to get the drink seems excessive to me. The comedy was when one of my friends ordered a drink they could not make...that tacked on another 10 minutes before he actually got a drink. 10 minutes for them to clarify they didn't have something...another 10 minutes to get a drink he had to settle on. And even then they missed part of it. NOTE: THe owner wrote me an email apologizing for inconvenience. He promised to send me something in the mail. 1 week later still nothing. Why bother writing me and then not follow through on what he said he'd do?

We've been here twice for happy hour and both times were delighted by the food. First time, it was just me and the family (husband, 6-mo baby), and while the food was excellent, the service was so-so. I think we were a bit too un-hip for the restaurant, and they were probably worried that our little precious would run amok (he didn't; he's very well-behaved). Second time, our experience was superb. We brought my 12 cousins in on the Friday of Labor Day (sans reservation), with baby again, AND we wanted to order off the happy hour menu. Staff was great, accommodated our request even though there was only 15 minutes left of happy hour. My cousins -- who had flown in from all over the US -- were impressed by the value, decor, drinks, etc. (some of them are from "big cities" and were inclined to be dismissive of Portland). Now, the food. Onion rings, fried green beans, fried mushrooms were all good -- not too greasy and good flavor. Potato fennel soup was delicious. Happy hour burger is a SMOKING value. Popcorn with truffle salt was clever and simple (now we make it at home), and salads -- all of them -- were excellent. Some of the cousins got food off of the proper dinner menu. Lamb shank was decent, but not popping with rich flavor like I prefer. Roasted beet salad was excellent. Pasta with sausage was excellent and serving size generous. Good selection of wines; our server was knowledgeable and gave a good recommendation. Cocktails were simple but expertly prepared. This may be our neighborhood go-to place, especially as baby makes for early hours. I'm putting price range at $$, though it would be $$$ if you ordered off the non-happy hour dinner menu.

We arrived at 23 Hoyt not knowing what to expect...I remember seeing it described as "A New American Tavern". In the middle of the Alphabet District, the venue has high ceilings, plenty of light and energy, and happy hour from 3 - 7 pm. There is an array of happy hour apps between $1 and $5, as well as discounted beer, red & white wine and specialty drinks. Our server came by and asked if we wanted drinks...I had the Prosecco and my BF had a bottle of Sessions beer. Our server then asked me if I wanted anything to eat and I asked for their $1 house-made pickles. That's the last time we saw him until we asked someone to get our bill. Our server went back and forth between the table on one side of us and the table on the other side of us, at least 4 times. We felt invisible. Honestly, I think the venue and happy hour menu look promising, but it was strange how we were ignored while the tables on both sides of us were highly attended to. The pickles were a very bright fluorescent color, but rather bland. But I guess they were only $1.

The food was really good. The service was not good. We waited an hour for our food. When we asked one of the waiters if our appetizer was coming, he responded 'Well if you ordered it then it's on it's way' and walked away. Some of our water glasses were empty for quite a while. I ordered the Salmon. It was wild Salmon and cooked nicely. My friend ordered the pork chops. It had a nice flavor. The birthday people received a complimentary desert which was nice but the rest of the table was never asked if they wanted desert.. Would I eat there again? Probably not. I would possibly go only for happy hour. I hear that's good. I just don't like having to take 3 hours to eat my dinner.

I had not been to 23 hoyt in some time, but went for brunch this last Sunday.. Very happy with my experience.. For starters they have $2 mimosas now! Love it! The menus has some great new additions and it was all topped off by great service from Beau! This is definitely going to be a regular Sunday brunch stop..

The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the food was good. Heirloom tomato salad was amazing. The whole menu was comprised of food that is right up my alley.. But the employees need to have a drink or something! I called to make reservations and the guy sounded as though it was such a pain in his a** to make one for me. He came across bored, unfriendly, and rude. But whatever, that's just one person- so far. I arrived, found my friend at the bar and was told she had waited 10 minutes for the bartender to even look at her, they were too busy in a conversation with a friend. The place was sparse, the men at the bar had all been helped but she was ignored. Long story short we barely saw out waitress, and when we did it was like she couldn't care less about our experience there. Not even a good evening how are you? I don't know if I'd go back again.. Maybe it was a fluke but we felt anything but welcome at 23 Hoyt, and one can find the same food elsewhere.

23 Hoyt replaced Balvo and it's an excellent choice for a nice dinner out. The atmosphere is not pretentious and the service was flawless--right down to our waitress' dry sense of humor. I also enjoyed the interesting decor including a deer-antler chandelier and a wonderfully fun and textured ceiling. The menu is limited and rotates (based on seasonsal availability I think), but I had the duck as my entree--and it was hands down the best duck meal I've ever had: it was full of a rich an interesting pairing of flavors. I'd agree that Balvo before was somewhat mediocre, but this place is now definitely worth a visit.

Definitely an upgrade from the restaurant that previously occupied this space (Balvo). I sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple unique cocktails and an Ahi, avacado and celantro app that in words of Will Ferril was, "Scrumtrulecent." The dinner menu is a bit pricey and for a non-date night, I chose to stick with the bar menu, which does offer a few tasty delights. If you get the burger, anything under medium is probably undercooked. Cheers.

pros: awesome tasty happy hour only place I have ever seen Caldera on tap (yay!!) cons: filled with pretentious nitwits incredibly hard to actually get a bar table Worth a shot, though--when I'm very mellow I can handle the attitude and I love to go here.

The happy hour is good here. The drinks are cheap and the food is good. I don't really know if it's because it has a bad rep or if people just dont hang out on 23rd anymore late night. It was pretty bare when I went in. The service was good. Our server looked like Moby. I ordered the burger off the hh menu and it was delightful. Super hot (temperature) and the meat was juicy. The house pickles were good as well. I had a couple of their mixed drinks and those were up to snuff as well. 23hoyt is a nice place to go if you don't want that rowdy crowd. It's just a nice place to kick back and watch people as they walk down 23rd. The interior is nice and ambient. I see some bad reviews of the place, but in all honesty, it's either gotten better, or I just know what the hell I'm talking about. But it's been good the 2 times I've gone.

I'll have to echo many of the other reviews. I went for happy hour, and, after scanning through the extensive happy hour menu, settled on the tempura mushrooms. These little bundles of joy were delicious! The other appetizers that my friends got also looked yummy. The staff were nice and courteous, but it was often hard to get their attention, and my party had to wait a long time before we finally flagged someone down to order. The place was completely empty except for us when we first got there, so it's not as if they were busy. So, I'd go back, but only for happy hour, and only if I weren't in a hurry. Update: After writing this review, the manager contacted me to say that they were working on their service and sent me a gift certificate. I went back with a friend. We went on a Friday late afternoon. The place was packed, but we got a table relatively quickly. The service this time was excellent; a big improvement from last time. We ordered the arugula flat bread with caramelized onions, the mushrooms flat bread with goat cheese, and the rustic bread from Grand Central bakery. Delicious!

My wife and I went back in Nov of 08 to 23 Hoyt for a date night. We were completely blown away by the food, flavors and service at 23 Hoyt. My memory is a tad fuzzy on what we ordered but truly ... the flavors, presentation and creativity on the menu were fantastic. I wanted to come back and give this restaurant what it deserved. There were flavor combinations that were inventive and amazing together. The service was prompt, caring and professional. Not sure about the other mixed reviews in the past but we had nothing to complain about. We have eaten at a LOT of amazing places here in Portland and the meal we had back in November bumped 23 Hoyt to the top of our 'best meal in Portland' list.

  • Arun K.

House Red wine was great. Burger had less flavor. For the price I paid I could have gotten a better deal somewhere else. My friend had the vegetarian entree option, he enjoyed it. Again all it had was lentil and some gravy. There were no vegetables in his dish as the menu called for. Overall value for the price is not justified.

Happy hour from 5-7 on a Friday night...BRILLIANT! The happy hour menu at 23 Hoyt is one of the most inspired HH menus I have seen in Portland. The menu is designed to give you a tease of what to expect if you join them for a full meal by offering gourmet "snacks" ranging from 1 to 5-dollars and beer, wine and cocktail specials from 3 to 5- dollars. The happy hour menu is filled with rich and elegant eats such as baked goat cheese wrapped in radicchio, salmon tartare with house made potato crisps, grilled shrimp with a roasted pepper aioli, and wild mushroom rice croquettes filled with mozarella...and the list goes on with elegant dishes at happy hour prices. The food is rich and decadent and filled with unique flavors that are exciting to sample. If you are used to loading up on happy hour dishes that barely make a dent in your appetite, be prepared to walk out with a Buddha belly because the portions are generous and filling.

Since I'm too poor to enjoy their actual dinner meal, I like to stick to their awesome HH (that's happy hour from now on) menu. If you're hungry, I'd skip the fancy stuff and go straight for the BURGER. It won't disappoint! It's so delicious that my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. Oh my!

Koi Fusion's purported sit-down location looked non-existent when my group got there yesterday, so our local friend suggested to going to the Alphabet district to look for grub. After some walking around, we landed on this place, just in time for 'reverse happy hour' (which I don't get, because just means 'sad hour' or 'yppah hour') Anyways, let's get the bad stuff out of the way. Drinks were late (came out last after most of the food), and the soda-based drinks were flat. For one person in my group, this was his third flat soda in the area that day! He surmised there must be a problem with the water? But enough of that, the good news is the food made up for it, in terms of value (hh). The one-dollar fries can't be beat (my friend said 'better than McDonalds'). The burger and the steakbites were excellent values and well worth their 5 dollar cost. I liked 'deviled eggs' on the menu, and at $2, it ain't that bad. What won me over was the service though. Our server apologized for the lateness of the beverages, and when we told her the sodas were flat, she asked if other drinks could fix that problem (we stated no). After that, she gave us a complimentary dessert and comped our beverages (even the ones that were not incorrect). Kudos to our server, I think that's a great way of mitigating unfortunate circumstances. I'll give this place another go just because of the service, next time I am in P-town.

Had their portabellini tavern plank, a chicken dish that doesn't seem to be on their current menu, and some sort of hazelnut cake for dessert. The lowlight in that lineup was the hazelnut cake, it was dry and practically flavorless. The ambiance is really nice at 23 Hoyt, and our service wasn't bad either. Iff you're in the area it's worth checking out.

We landed on this spot and should have known better: though the attention was OK, the prices were absurd. We ended up ordering a Caesar Salad and a plate of pasta to share to try not to blow our check out and still ended up paying close to $60. While the music is very good and the place looks all trendy, the food was just OK and not really worth the prices.

The happy hour concept at 23 Hoyt is smart. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 dollar appetizer portion plates, 3 dollar beers, 5 dollar wine and cocktails, from 5-7pm. There is plenty of outside seating, mostly shaded. The portions are good for the cost, and the ingredients are wonderful. I can't complain about the food, it was fantastic. For one dollar each we got a nice serving of salted almonds and fresh, beautiful, tasty olives. We got other plates for varying costs. The chevre was so incredibly rich and smooth. The potato pizza, which sounded weird, turned out delicious. Juicy, moist, flavorful burger and fries, perfect Ceaser, and fabulous "ham and cheese with chips," made with prosciutto. The lemon verbena martini, with sugared rim, was well made. The cranberry cosmopolitan was less well made, but not bad. The service was very bad. The waiter forgot to put in our order and when we asked another waiter to inquire about our food, the waiter stretched the truth about why our food was delayed. I think after he figured out his error he avoided our table, which led to further delays as well as plates not being cleared and slow drink orders. Generally I don't say anything and go home and write a snarky review. Recently I've been thinking it is wrong for me to write something critical if I'm not willing to say it to the manager's face. So when the manager asked, "How was it?" I said the truth: great food, poor service. He found out what happened, sat down with us, talked about how it could be better, and then offered to adjust the bill. We were not expecting that, we just wanted him to know that our experience was less than stellar. He seemed genuinely interested in making the restaurant better. I would go back for happy hour, the food was top notch, and when service is sharp, I bet this place is going to be hard to beat for happy hour value and quality.

This is by far our favorite place for brunch! Their dinner is amazing too! $2 mimosas on Sunday :) Everything about this place is amazing. We've always had great service and have never been dissatisfied in anyway. I would recommend this place to anyone!

I went here a couple of hours before catching a flight. I kind of wish I had more time to chill out and enjoy the space. I really enjoyed the setting and decor. I'm sure it's a great place to kill a bottle of wine. Great music too! The menu had a variety of interesting dishes and small plates. I enjoyed the fried mushrooms....and I never like mushrooms. I wouldn't say the food was outstanding, but it definitely didn't suck. Service was friendly. Can't complain....I'd go back!

I went here for a birthday party with over 20 friends, and they charged us $3 per cutting, which was rather disappointing, since we contributed a significant amount of revenue for them. If they did a fixed price, I would totally understand. The sad part was we were the only few tables there. i did appreciate them helping me organize the arrangement, by reserving us the table. They really did a nice job. The ambiance and food were very good, but the service can always be improved. I would recommend the exotic dishes, since they were well done and some tasted amazing.

Expected so much more out of a place with a self proclaimed "bevy of bitters" but my cocktails were just decent. Nothing exciting, unique, or even just real great staple drink. Nice atmosphere however, a touch pretentious, but aesthetically appealing and welcoming overall.

23 Hoyt is lovely, has some tasty dishes, but come on, if you've really got it going on, you don't have to take yourself that seriously. Thank god I was magna cum laude, able to overcome the notion that I'm a complete imbecile by asking for some clarifications on the menu. 23 Hoyt Trivia Time: What red headed D-list comedian played celebrity poker against Rikki Lake at 23 Hoyt, before Jesus had nothing to do with her winning an Emmy? Classy!!!

To confirm Kristen M's curiosity on the Caesar salad, it was definitely the best Caesar I've ever had. The dressing had a nice garlic kick to it. Be sure to bring some mints after you've tried it because you don't wanna have garlic breath all night.

So I revisited 23 Hoyt after a not so great visit last summer. I have to say something has changed because there were definitely more people in the restaurant and the service was way better. I have been meaning to go back sooner but every time I stopped by it was too crowded. The service was so much better this time because not only was the server checking in on us but also the manager was making the rounds. The service was a little slow, but it wasn't like the staff was waiting around this time. The food was a little better this time, too. My friend and I ordered the donut holes which were quite yummy. I did wish there was another dip, either a coffee or chocolate dip. It reminded me of an awesome dessert I had in SF which was warm beignets with a sweet espresso dip. I haven't tried happy hour nor brunch but I might soon.

Delicious food. I'd go back anytime. The space is nice and open so that even when it's busy (as it often is) you don't feel crowded.

The Keystone Cops Work A Restaurant In My Top 5 Worst Dining Experiences 7:30 reservation - arrive on time (table not ready -asked to wait at bar) 8:05 I ask where our table is 8:10 Told it was given away to another couple. Would we like bread while we wait? Sure. We'll take bread. 8:25 Need to ask them where the bread is 8:30 Bread arrives 8:35 They tell us we'll have our table in just a minute 9:05 Our table is ready (95 minutes late) 9:20 They give us comped appetizers 9:40 We tell them we don't have room for entrees now after 95 mins of bread, wine and then appetizers 9:45 Here's the clincher - they bring us the bill for the single glass of wine I ordered at the table. They could have redeemed the situation a great deal if they had just said "sorry about everything - we're covering it all" but instead they just go through the motions. Bottom line: no one at 23 Hoyt really stepped-up and stopped a downward spiraling disaster after they had made a major error with our table. And I'm sure they think they have great service....... I was polite throughout the entire incident and maybe that is why it happened. I guess it pays to yell in some places.

Went here last night for the first time. Turned out to be totally different that I expected. I find it a little hard to find a "bar" in NW / Nob Hill but this place really hit the mark! I know it's a restaurant at heat but it really does serve as a nice place to grab a drink as well! Try it out if you're in the neighborhood.

My husband and I went on a whim last night, knowing little about the restaurant other than having seen the menu online. In short, there was nothing *wrong* precisely, just nothing worth returning for. We got off to a good start - iceberg lettuce salad was nicely dressed and tasty, and the cauliflower soup was a nice amuse-bouche. But the entrees were meh! As my husband remarked as he was eating his roast chicken, I've never cooked such a boring chicken at home. Both his chicken and my salmon were on the dry side, and the accompaniments were not only forgettable (pureed beans, onions) but did nothing to make the plate attractive - both our plates were a medley of brown mush with a piece of meat on top. As another reviewer said, there was nothing wrong with the food, it was just not great, and certainly not what we were hoping for from our random foray into NW Portland for dining. We wouldn't go back, although the happy hour menu did look interesting, and the service was very nice and helpful.

An average Portland meal- good but really nothing special- perhaps a tad overpriced for what you're getting. Sat at a nice table outside- just up a side street off of 23rd. The interior is actually really cool (feels like you're outside.) The charcuterie plate was good, as was the carrot soup. I'd say my pork was OK (a little bit on the dry side- but still tasty. The service was a little bit slow and not so attentive. One of the guys I was eating with didn't actually get the salad he ordered twice. Not a Portland standout, but still good/worth going to.

As an out of town guest I'm always wondering what I'll get when I walk into an unfamiliar restaurant. 23 Hoyt didn't disappoint. The staff was very attentive and the food was to die for. The bar makes a mean margarita and they clearly aren't in the habit of skimping on the tequila like so many eateries I know. Those were some DAMN strong drinks! My steak was perfectly cooked with a flavorful sauce and generous serving of asparagus. It was great but I made the mistake of having a piece of my friend's chicken and wished I had ordered that instead. I was amazed at how juicy and flavorful the chicken was and if our two meals are indicative of the entire menu then I'm thinking you probably can't go too wrong eating/drinking here.

Happy Hour menu is certainly no bargain. The food was tasty but not outstanding. Atmosphere is very nice service was just OK. Prices we very high on the happy hour menu, drinks were small. This is more of a pearl district place than a NW 23rd joint. Happy hour is not recommend.

23 Hoyt is a place I don't want to like. It just bothers me that one person can buy a bunch of restaurants to compete against each other for "the best restaurant in town". It just isn't right! Not to mention the attitude at 23 Hoyt is pretentious and self-important. Why on earth would I give it four stars, you wonder? The food is incredible. I really can't deny how good it is. I have been there three times, each time hoping to find something inedible or at least not delicious, but walk away shaking my head with disapproval of my happy belly. I wouldn't say the food is perfect or it is even close to the best restaurant in town, but if you can ignore the monopoly aspect and the pretentiousness it is an enjoyable experience. I guess.

Great Happy Hour food menu but the happy hour drink menu is a lacking, with only one wine and one beer and very limited specialty cocktails. We ordered mussels, which were wonderful in a smokey tomato broth, sliders, their wonderful french fries and some velvety butternut squash soup. Overall it was all good and the service was friendly but not intrusive. I will definitely be back for happy hour.

I went here for brunch and it was bomb!! The food was great and they had $2 mimosas! I also thought the decor was great.

My husband and I walked in at 6:15 and they let us sit for happy hour and order off of it. They were super nice and the food was delicious! I'll def. be coming back :)

The food was good. In this particular case, the service floundered the "goodness" of the food. The server seemed eager to get us out even before closing time. She tried to take our plates when there was still a piece of Salmon filet and she overcharged our bill.

Disappointing.. Slow kitchen service. Half empty restaurant and 45 mins for appetiser and 90 for entree. Veg under cooked and very salty. So many better options nearby :-(

What a great place to have a great dinner outside on NW 23rd! I had the wedge, the carrot soup, and the roasted chicken. All were delicious and the service was great. I'll definitely be back. My boyfriend had the beer braised beef cheeks and loved it too.
