Small yet modern spot. Sit at the sushi bar to see these guys make some amazing stuff.

We're here a couple of times a month. The staff is friendly and attentive and the food is usually pretty good. They have a great seaweed salad and miso soup (important standards for any sushi place in my book) and a bunch of yummy rolls. We're big fans of the Mt. McKinley, Columbia, Amazing, and Fantastic rolls. I'd never actually had a roll with jalapeños in it until I came here - money!

Six family members were looking for a sushi restaurant for lunch on New Year's Day and Shinsei was open. None of us had ever been there before. The dining room is not very large and was full. It took awhile to get our order, but we were not in a hurry, so it was not a problem. I ordered a bento box with a Calif. roll and teriyaki chicken. There was enough left over to take home. The accompanying miso soup was very tasty. Everyone was pleased with their orders and even my son who has a big appetite was satisfied with the quantity. The server was pleasant and attentive and I know I will be back again.

The sushi tastes good, but it wasn't the best I've had. The wait was a little longer than desired. I did like the hot brown rice and green tea though.

Always good fresh sushi, clean restaurant and restrooms, service is casual, nice place for a quick bite!

Of all the sushi places in Medford that I've tried (I haven't been to all of them, but many of them) this is the best by far! It's clean, friendly service, and great food. They have some amazing vegetarian options, and I can be absolutely stuffed for about $15. My husband is not a vegetarian, and he has loved everything he's tried here! Our daughter isn't a fan of fish or veggies, but she loved the chicken (I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, but it's baked). This is our go-to sushi spot in Medford.

Maybe it was because I arrived 45 min. before closing, but the sushi was sub par. The rice felt like it was "scraps" and sitting out for awhile. It was close to being stale rice and it didn't even taste seasoned. Their rice ratio seems to be off too - as seen in the pictures, they use a very thin layer of rice for rolls. However, they use fresh crab instead of imitation which is cool. They need to fix their rice issue though.

We go here regularly for lunch. It's a great little spot. Always great service and consistently good food. Have not tried it for dinner. Feels more like a lunch place to us.

Went there with the family of four. Got a huge amount of yummy food for about $55, not including the tip. Both kids got the kids' bento boxes, which were a great deal for around $8 each. The fried goyza was something I wouldn't get again, though. Service was excellent, and dirty dishes were promptly picked up as they were emptied. ***They have gluten-free soy sauce (tamari), you just have to ask for it.***

Amazingly fresh fish and fabulous menu. One of my favorite restaurants in Medford. The sushi bar is my favorite spot... And the shinsei pizza is a must!

It's just really ok. Nothing incredible or outstanding. Just simple tasting nothing more. The service was good. Place is small. A bit pricey for what they had. Glad we tried it.

The restaurant was clean and new looking. The waiters were pretty attentive though it took forever for us to get our food. Maybe it was because I had ordered the udon noodle soup? I didn't like how they used broccoli, mushrooms (not shitake), and carrots as the veggie in the soup. Not authentic at all! At least the kid's bento box was a pretty good value.

I have been here several times now since it is so close to my home and office. First off, great prices! They are a little cheaper than the other sushi joints in town which is smart, and their portions are generous. Second, interior is very nice, intimate, and warmly lit. So far, service has been great. Finally, the food: love it! Everything I have tried has been fresh and delicious. They offer bentos with a wide selection of choices. I am partial to the spicy pork and love that it is like stir fry, chock full of veggies like broccoli, green and red peppers, onions, etc. Most places just give you a pile of meat, but this place upped the game for these parts. I like that they offer five or six vegetarian rolls...the basic veggie one is fantastic and an option with the bento. I recommend it over the California roll. I am most impressed with how this place packages to-go orders: everything is compartmentalized, the salad dressing is on the side so it isn't soggy by the time you eat like with most places, and they give generous portions of soy sauce, ginger, wasabi and dressing. Try this new place and be sure to check in on Yelp for free potsticker appetizers- oh yeah, those are great too!

Excellent food! Tried the Bento option today for to-go lunch, which my second half was so gracious enough to deliver to me. Food was expertly packed, with loads of wasabi, soy sauce, and ginger. Sushi was top-notch fresh, with very unique veggies in the veggie roll....well done! Very light and tasty miso, nice and hot even after delivery. Overall, A+ for what I've had in this Valley! Look forward to dining in-person at this new joint. Also, it should be noted that prices are very reasonable and fair.

Sushi is really good and so is the clams appetizer! I especially enjoyed the service. My boyfriend and I don't know a lot about sake, so the waiter brought us out several to taste and gave very knowledgeable suggestions and information about each of them. I was totally impressed by that. Not very often to you go to a place and the server is so willing to go out of there way to give you options and make sure you know and like what you're getting.

Comparing this sushi restaurant with others in the Ashland-Medford area, it rates five stars but on a broader scale it rates four. I had the bento with teriyaki chicken, mixed tempura, salad, goyza, miso soup and rice. The teriyaki sauce and salad dressing were not cloying sweet as at most competitors but a perfect balance of tart and sweet. The vegetable goyza was soft with hard edges and had a good flavor. The tempura mix included green beans, shrimp, potato and onion with a soft batter that was cooked okay. The miso soup was the ordinary kind from a package that nearly every place serves. This is a small, plain restaurant in the new shopping center at Rossanley Dr. and Court St. with, based on my one visit so far, a young clientele.

From the San Francisco Bay Area and dropped in after REI and we were all pleasantly surprised how good food was. All the sushi and sashimi was fresh and tasty. The service was friendly and fast.

Really good sushi, top quality if you ask me. The service is spot on! We had a really nice gentleman waiter both times we have been and he is very attentive and gives great service! Try the smoked salmon roll and the tempura ice cream for dessert they won't disappoint!

Mario kart 8 was a solid choice. I enjoyed the sushi and desert and it was good. Uh I had a strawberry desert and that was good. Las vegas roll was the truth. Shit is fire. It was nice and quiet inside the building and it was a good place to eat. 3/5.

My partner and I stopped in here for a late lunch a few days ago. The girl at the Starbucks in Rogue Valley Mall recommended Shinsei for good, not too expensive sushi. It was also conveniently located just down the street. Shinsei's a clean, trendy-looking place, with modern decor and all that. We were promptly greeted and seated; the dining room had several tables that were occupied, so we asked to sit at the sushi bar since it was basically empty. Besides, I like watching the sushi chefs do their thing. The young lady who waited on us was very attentive and checked on us regularly. We had sushi and edamame, both of which were top notch. For drinks we indulged a novelty and each got Ramune. Good times and good food were had!

Ate dinner on 11/18/14. The service was very good. Having eaten a lot of sushi in the San Francisco Bay area, I was a little disappointed in the food. First of all as my brother, lives in Central Point, andI noticed the sushi chefs were not Japanese. We ordered sunomono, cucumber salad, that was made with regular cucumber not the japanese cucumber with seaweed. The cucumber was was rather thickly cut. The dressing was ok. Cook that prepared Sunomono is not that familiar with Japanese food. We ordered the Chirashi. The seafood was a little old but did not taste bad. A sign of a good sushi chef is how the tamago (egg omelet) appears and tastes. The omelet should be about an inch thick and of one color with no burnt crust. The tamago came about an 1/4 inch thick and burned on both sides. The flavor lacked dashi (fish broth) taste. I guess the lack of a Japanese population leads to mediocre sushi restaurant. I gave the sushi two staars and added a star for the good service.

My girlfriend and I usually go to Wasabi sushi but since they were closed we decided to give this place a shot. We felt that the atmosphere, service, and cleanliness was pretty good but the food was just okay. For about the same price we felt that Wasabi was better so I doubt we'll be going back but that's just our preference.

There are still a couple of newer sushi places in the area that I haven't yet tried, so I don't have a perfect basis for comparison, but this place is the best I've found so far. Decent prices for rolls. Fast service. Fish isn't old. Miso soup is pretty good too. The sake flights are a nice addition and are quite interesting. There are even a number of options, with and without tempura, for those who prefer to remain meatless. All in all, a great place. I've never had to wait but it does get busy on weekend evenings.

Nice small sushi place, very clean and great service. The sushi was good as well there is an above average menu for a sushi place in my opinion that includes some quality appetizers as well as a great selection of rolls. Free dessert for us today as well for checking in with yelp. Great overall experience.

Lunch with a large group(6) from work. Noonish... give or take 15mins. Most all the tables were full, but we were able to sit at the Sushi bar. Comfortable, clean and tidy. Service was prompt, menu large, and the rolls great. By all accounts the ingredients were fresh and appetizing, portions were ample and tasty. Great spot, will go again for sure. Smokey Vegas. Do it!

Very impressed, better ambiance, style and attention to detail than Bonzai on Barnett....it gets fairly busy but they will take your number and you can walk over to REI, Trader Joe's etc and they will call you when your table is ready, how cool is that? Try the Sake flights, a great intro to Sake if it's unfamiliar to you.

First time visit last night with boyfriend and 2 teenage boys. We had about 8 sushi rolls and an order of gyoza. All of the food was quite good and tasted fresh. We did notice the wasabi was a little mild. Service was good overall but did get a little slower as they got busier. They were really on top if the drinks though, refilling constantly. I had the iced green tea which I liked but had an unusual taste, sort of like wheat. My favorite sushi roll was the butter fish. It had mango in it and I have never seen that before. The ambience is nice but it's a small space so if you want more quiet and less crowded seating go during non peak times. The prices are reasonable. Our total was under $65. We will definitely go again.

stopped in early on a Sunday evening. good crowd for the day and time. always want to see a busy sushi spot, as you can imagine that there is a fair amount of turnover, and that the food is reasonably fresh. I was somewhat guarded given other reviews, but was ready to give the place a fair shot. finding a restaurant in Medford that I'd visit a second time is a rare occurrence, and this definitely qualifies in my book. first impression. nice curb appeal. I'm an architect, so space is important to me. as some other reviewers have mentioned, the entry is a bit tight, but as it was not extremely busy when I visited, this was not necessarily a problem. I was shown to a fairly comfortable two-top on the sushi bar side of the restaurant. the division seems a bit strange as the wait staff have to cross back and forth through the entry area. space was a nicely finished and very modern. nicely lit as well. even with all of the tables occupied, it was not too loud. a real problem with other Medford restaurants. the menu is a bit confusing consisting of four pieces - a beverage menu, a hard menu, a sushi menu on a single card, and a specials menu, also on a card... seemed like things could be condensed for ease of use. well. mr long winded architect... how was the food? I ordered a gyoza and siumai appetizer. a little greasy, and the siumai were definitely from frozen, and deep fried instead of steamed. the gyoza were better, but again a little greasy. seems like the oil probably needed to be a bit hotter. I ordered a spicy roll - the fantastic roll. unfortunately the jalapeño was without heat. the spicy tuna could have used a bit more kick. it was well prepared, however and quite tasty anyway. you can never rely on chiles for consistent heat, especially at this time of the year. the wait staff was very friendly and polite. knowledgable about the menu as well. I heard them helping several other patrons through the extensive menu. quite expertly I might add. in addition, I think the prices are very reasonable. I left stuffed for just under $20 with a soft drink. I little more than your average Medford meal, but certainly reasonable given the quality of the food, service, and environment. one quibble. I'm very sensitive to the smell of bleach and the sanitizer used in restaurants. the towels the servers used to clean up reeked of the stuff. I appreciate a clean place, but it can be off putting. it gave me a terrific headache.

4 stars because I can tell that they're trying, but there's more to work on. First off, get rid of the top ramen so people like my SO aren't tempted to order it. Ramen is a specialty and really shouldn't be ordered at a sushi spot that doesn't specialize in it, and what he got was top ramen. The rolls met my expectations. Smokey philly roll, shrimp tempura roll, and spider roll -- all were delicious, a little small, but the prices were reasonable. Seaweed salad was refreshing. Service was fine. Went in for a late lunch on a Sunday with no wait. $34 for two people, no drinks. I'd go back, because I like to support local businesses and this place has potential.

Good service. The sushi was very fresh and was loaded with rice. The baked mussels were yummy, but a lil over priced for 2. I will probably order the clams next time. I got the sunshine roll and double crusty. Both are very yummy. Check in and you also get a free mochi!

I'm downgrading Shinsei Sushi in my review, not because of the food, but because of the lack of leadership, poor layout, and small space. As I said in my last review, Shinsei has run into a problem almost immediately after opening. They are a hot, happenin' place, but they have very little seating. Combine the limited seating with the extremely poor layout (everyone must pass through the same 5 square feet of "entry" when entering, exiting, waiting to be seated and servers delivering food and removing dishes from the main side of the restaurant) and even one or two people waiting to be seated turns into a disaster. As others have noted there is no "host" at the front. The waitresses or bus boy are supposed to act in that capacity, but of the three or four times I've been there, no one has that role assigned and the lack of communication is appalling. And on a very busy Saturday night, like tonight, the scenario plays out like this: we arrived, there was a wait. There were two of us. The "hostess/waitress" with the Ipad says she will clean off a two-top that was just vacated and seat us right away. 20 minutes later, after never being spoken to again, and the waitress having disappeared, the table clean and set, but empty, other patrons waiting to be seated, several tables looking around longingly for food, we left. Shinsei Sushi has so much going for it but they are going to lose customers quickly if they do not address the following: small space ill used remove the center divider wall and replace booths with more tables and open access to both sides of the restaurant-eliminating the ridiculous single thoroughfare at front of house hire a host/ess increase communication between staff at front and back of house I have no issues with the food; it has always been delicious. I have issues with the management. If you go when they aren't busy these issues will disappear, but any time it is busy (lunch, prime dinner hours) the customers get frustrated quickly.

I have been waiting 30 min on a slow wednesday. For a simple Nigiri order (just a piece of raw fish on top of some rice). And it taste VERY bland. Go somewhere else is my advice.

Fresh, awesome sushi with an amazing ATTENTIVE staff! I've been so disappointed by the lack of service in Medford restaurants. However, Shinsei is the exception. We were met with a genuinely warm greeting, quickly seated, and throughout our visit we had other wait staff filling our water and removing dirty dishes. I'm so glad to find an establishment where people treat you so well!!! As for the food, AWESOME! Fresh, delicious sushi is a real treat-and, Shinsei has it! We were entertaining family from out of town on this visit. They remarked on how great it was to have a great sushi restaurant in the area. Thanks to everyone at Shinsei for a fabulous time! We'll see you soon...DC

I was not impressed with the service or food. There was 6 customers in there, 3 tables, and it took them about 10 minutes to seat me. I sit at the bar and the sushi chefs never said hello. I sat there for about 20 minutes before someone came over to take my order. I wasn't even offered a water. Once I got the food the fish was funky and the rolls were lackluster. With so many amazing sushi bars in town you should skip this place.

I know, I'm the jerk that gave less stars than everyone else, but I am doing so because I've only been once, and I wasn't blown away like everyone else. However, I will say that this place has TONS of potential, and excellent prices. In all honestly, it's a 3.5-star place right this moment (IMO). The place is very, very small, which I would think is kind of counterproductive for a sushi place...especially here in the valley. Sushi is a very popular food choice when dining out, and good sushi is about as common here as snow is in Mexico. Okay, I'm exaggerating, of course, but you know what I mean. The Fiance and I stopped in with the intention of getting one roll each, just to test the place out. It was very crowded, yet not noisy. That was good. We got the LAST table, a small two-seater by the kitchen. I couldn't hang my coat on my chair without getting the girl sitting behind me, but that could also be because she seemed very intent on letting me know that she was NOT trying to share her space with anyone or anything lol. The selection of rolls is decent, but the menu is a bit confusing. They abbreviate a lot, and I constantly had to refer to the "abbreviation key" at the bottom of the menu to see what "STM" and "CU" and "US" stood for (hey, some of you may think I'm an idiot, but I have ADD and can barely remember my own age half the time). We zeroed in on the crispy rolls because they're priced incredibly well, and sounded amazing. We got the Sun River, Medford and Smokey Vegas rolls; the Sun River is a "traditional" roll, rolled in rice and not baked or fried. The Medford and Smokey Vegas rolls are both battered and fried. Sun River- I did not try this one, as The Fiance ordered it and he was starving. He said it tasted good, but was very loosely rolled. I could see that myself; it was kind of falling apart before he even picked it up. However, this did not bother him too much. A former sushi chef and server, he said that the person who prepared the rolls may be "new" at it, and that they would probably improve over time. It's a new restaurant, so maybe he's right. Medford- (Deep-fried, spicy tuna mix, avocado, spicy mayo and unagi sauce): Not bad. The fish tasted fresh and the flavor was good. However, the roll was slightly cold and soft for a "deep fried" roll. I was expecting hot and crispy. That was the only downside to this roll. Smokey Vegas- (Deep-fried, smoked salon, cream cheese, avocado and unagi sauce): This was DELICIOUS. Again, the only downside was the fact that it was soft and cold, not crispy. Had this not been the case, I probably would have given this place a solid 4.5 stars. The semi-complicated menu and space issue aren't a huge deal, but they are the reason I'd knock off a 1/2 star. All in all, not a bad spot. Fairly extensive menu, great prices and fresh fish are all great reasons to go :)

I had serviceable sashimi (tuna and yellowtail, hard to mess those up) and a pretty decent soft shell crab roll. Service could have been faster and more coordinated, my dining companion cancelled a salad but they brought it anyway. I'll try it again, mainly because it's close to my work.

I was here on 6/12/14 for dinner with my family and had Lizzett as our server. We have a two year old and the first thing our server did was bring her a coloring book and crayons. Perfect! Growing up in LA, I was a little nervous about a sushi place in Medford, OR to say the least. To my surprise, everyone enjoyed their food so much that we all swore off eating ever again because we were so full. Our daughter had the yakisoba noodles. She decided to start being a brat towards the end and spit some noodles back onto her plate. Our server cleared our table and came back promptly to ask if we were unhappy with the noodles since it looked like the dish hadn't been touched. We explained the situation and a few minutes later she returned with a fresh batch of yakisoba in a to go box for us! Service, drinks and food were fabulous and we can't wait to go back! Lizzett needs a raise because her service was the best we've had since we moved to the valley in April!

First, the service was INCREDIBLE, the male server who waited on us was top notch. Friendly, efficient and very helpful. Checked on us multiple times and re filled our drinks before we even asked. Second, The menu was annoying. To many abbreviations. It made it hard to figure out what to order when you are always trying to check the key at the bottom of the menu to see what is what. I found it frustrating. Third, Food was good, I wasn't into all the seaweed piled up on my spicy tuna roll and I love seaweed! Otherwise it was good. The black tiger I think was the other one? It was good. Nice sauce not to over powering and not to much of it. They gave me plenty of pickled ginger which is my favorite! Got the coconut/mango/passion fruit desert. It was obviously not made in house and was OKAY but it was served still frozen and was more ice cream then mousse because of that. I think I would hit this place up for their happy hour other wise I like I love sushi better.

Sorry, I was really looking forward to eating here after checking it out when shopping. I'm giving it 1 star because, although it wasn't good, it wasn't extremely horrible either. However, within 2 hours, our lunch was exiting our bodies at a fast and furious pace if ya know what I mean, (no, we didn't eat anywhere else).... The restaurant is simple, but nice. The service was a bit slow, but apologetic, (the server was very nice and gracious). We had green tea which was served in large handle-less mugs. We ordered the entree-sized vegetable tempura which consisted of a couple of pieces of onion, some kind of squash, one asparagus spear and a couple of green beans; that's it, (I can't imagine what the appetizer size looks like)! The spider roll was about 5 pieces and hadn't any flavor. The sweet dragon roll was larger, but again, very little to no flavor. We didn't finish our lunch and requested a to-go box only because, for some reason, I felt bad leaving it there. We considered bringing it home to our dog, but instead, threw it in the trash outside the restaurant. Good thing we did; I love my dog!

Walked in to a somewhat busy restaurant and noticed one table available for my family of 3. There were 6 people standing around in the restaurant, 2 of which were chatting to each other. Two people looked up to see my family and I waiting but failed to acknowledge nor did they us to wait while someone is free. We waited another 5 minutes and decided to walk out. A restaurant that can't even handle multitasking and greeting a customer does not deserve my money.

I have been to Shinsei Sushi more than a few times now and I can gladly say that I always leave more than satisfied! I am always greeted warmly and seated promptly. And even though it may appear as if it's a small restaurant, I haven't felt overcrowded or cramped. The sushi rolls are delicious, on the spot every time! The waiters are pleasant and accommodating! One server, a girl with glasses, is my personal favorite -- she's really kind, attentive, and hilarious! Bring your friends, this is a great spot for lunch parties or evening dates!

Not very impressive. The rolls were small and mediocre at best. I don't understand how they've received 5 stars. The restaurant was cute and the service was fine, but the food just wasn't good.

Awkward. The first step into Shinsei you are greeted by a wall and partition the hostess booth is placed awkwardly to the side where you could see behind it if you are seated in the right of the restaurant. There seems to be two waiters and a buser but no real presence or leadership in the front of house. Wasabi was on the dish when it arrived and the table and many of the dishes were dirty. Menu looked promising however disappointing when it arrived. Green tea was mediocre, definitely not fresh. Served in a mug piping hot with no handle so it was impossible to drink until it cooled off for 15 minutes. Gyozas deep fried came first. Did like the soy blend of green onions and sesame that it was served with however the meat inside was overcooked and bland. The outsides were under seasoned as well. A nice teriyaki or a sweet sauce would have helped compliment the Gyozas and break up the fatiness and blandness of the dish. As a waitress was clearing away the dish she asked jf I wanted the check. I politely mentioned that I still had three items in order and she apologized. However this goes back to the lack of leadership and communication at the front of house. Next the sushi came before the second appetizer. The sushi itself came on a wooden boat which being how I ordered two rolls didn't seem to warrant the gimmick however didn't hurt the dish. The rolls themselves, however were sloppily made. The rice was not packed right so many of the rolls were in the verge of falling apart or not shaped right. Also the rice tasted a little bland and not the traditional sushi rice. The spicy tuna roll was not spicy and tasted and looked of a low quality tuna--no where near sashimi grade. The smoked Vegas roll I had high expectations for however fell short. Tempura was done beautifully, however it was missing the spicy mayo sauce which would have brought it together. The smoked tuna inside was massive which sounds like a good thing however it overwhelmed all other flavors. Also it was missing a sweet element. The Dynamite came last. First thing I noticed was the portion size was quite small for $8. Second the mix of flavors was off. It was greasy and bland. Scallops were though and overcooked. They were nice enough to take that off the bill. They do have potential-- great location, great decor but little more time and tweaking to hopefully realize it.

first time visiting shinsei sushi this week. had to make a yelp just to put the good word out there. so far BEST sushi in the valley. fresh, unique, great service. Even the busser/host had a smiling face and was helpful to my questions. was a little worried about trying them out due to some other reviews. but was very happy with the food and service. will definitley be back! try the mt. mkinnley!

I had a great experience at Shinsei. The sign isn't up yet, it's just a banner but it was still pretty busy. The waitresses were friendly and the service was prompt. Most importantly, the fish was fresh. It's hard to find such fresh sushi, especially being from Seattle, (so much good sushi there) but I was impressed. I loved it and will definitely be coming back!

The service, atmosphere were perfect for our early dinner. The jalapeño stuffed with crab Wow. The combo sushi, sashimi delectable. The gomo salad ! Loved it! A glorious happenstance encounter. Worthy of your discerning appetite!!!

Clean nice place. Seafood fresh. Not the most epic and actually have had better in albuquerque, new mexico-no ocean or coast. No Toro Service nice enough. 11 year old and I had a good time. Free gyoza appetizer with yelp check in and at least a 20 dollar order...nice.

9 dollars for this (check out photo). This place is a joke. The long wait did not help either. I have had way better sushi than this. Maybe i came in the wrong day, but this was not worth my money or time....NEXT!!!!

The rolls were easy to put in my mouth and delicious! Big bowl of yummy edamame. Friendly staff, great service. Only place I could find that had escolar... My buttery fave. Good location, tables were pleasantly arranged. I will come here again!

I love sushi, and the stuff in the supermarket is better than this. The ambience is forgettable and the wait staff is unknowledgeable. Sigh.

The sushi was awesome. I was so stoked to see they had tamago! Although their ramen was no great it was basically cup of noodles with some veggies. Other than that their service was nice and the restaurant was clean and updated.

Delicious. I had the Ashland roll and the asparagus roll. I could have used a second asparagus roll. Very very good. Not huge portions but enough for a meal. One roll would not be enough though. The green tea is biting and is a good compliment to the sushi.

I guess I'm spoiled living in Seattle. The fish on top of my sushi was warm And slimy- honestly I was afraid to eat it for fear of food poisoning. I am just traveling here but business brings me here often and I don't be back.

Love this sushi restaurant! My boyfriend and I have eaten here 3 times in the past 2 weeks and every time it's a wonderful experience with delicious sushi!

After multiple visits I've come to conclude that the sushi is okay. Not great, but not terrible. They use fresh ingredients which is a plus. Service is always quick and the staff are friendly. Good place to go for a quick bite.

Pricey! $5 for crab nigiri? Monkey do: CHIRASHI DONBURI - very little fish over plenty of rice VEGGIE ROLL - refreshing VEGGIE TEMPURA - saturated YAKI UDON - this was good Clean, modern decor. A very nice fast food. But overpriced. Free Mochi Ice Cream with check in + $20 spent.

I have to agree with another reviewer that recommended the smoky Vegas- it had such an incredible flavor- I ordered a bento box and ordered it to replace one of the choices- it was a small up charge but so worth it- another bonus is the salmon is smoked and therefore not raw; for those that aren't quite okay with that this is an excellent option

I really liked the food here. Best crab I've had in a roll. Not a ton of mayo in it. I took away one star because there is zero interaction with the chefs at the bar. Waitress does everything! You may as well sit in the dinning room. No hello or goodby when you arrive and leave. . I love it when you walk in and all the chefs say hello like your somebody special. And goodby like you'll be missed.

Clean place and very nice staff. Sushi is mediocre (although we just moved from 4 years in Japan so that might be unfair to say.) Kids ramen was nice for our 2 year old. And their dessert selection is nice. All around a good place to stop.

It's an okay sushi place, the atmosphere is nice and 3 PM was a quiet time to eat. The rice dishes and the salads were good, and while the sushi was excellent, the portions were small and they were slightly overpriced. I'd come again though because the tastes were good and service was okay at the time.

Love, love, love, this place! Great sushi, friendly staff, and reasonably priced. I love going in for happy hour. They have great deals on sushi rolls during this time.

Two stars because the sushi was very good, but the customer service was terrible. It took about 35 minutes for my waitress to give me the correct receipt (fourth times the charm) and that caused me to be late to a meeting.

Food was great as expected. Service was way below standard. We ordered and waited over 45 minutes till our food was received. Even two tables were seated after us received their food before we did I had to ask why it was taken so long. She the chef was razzled? Long wait terrible service but good food. We were traveling to California and stopped for lunch next time we will call ahead.

This is my kiddos favorite sushi place. We always have the poki salad with ahi and they always let us order a family favorite that isn't even on the menu anymore. Service is hit or miss but there are a few staff members there that seem to genuinely like sushi and are excited to help you pick/try something new. Clean and inviting but would be nice sometimes if it was a bit bigger. Really tough to get a table during busy times.

It was very good Sushi. Good quality and atmosphere. Price is reasonable. But one thing to say is vinegar rice. It was bit hard and less taste. If they could improve them then it will be better Sushi house.

Fresh sushi! We had the los vegas roll. Yum! And ramen! Doesn't taste like traditional ramen from japan but most people aren't into traditional. They want americanized. So there you have it! Staff was nice ambience was nice too!

One of the few places to get decent sushi in the area. Yakisoba is delicious.

We tried this place because of there reviews on yelp and were not disappointed. We got the edamame and pork Gyoza as appetizers. The gyoza was deep fried and delicious. We both ordered crispy rolls (the super crispy and the double crispy) again delicious. My husband also order salmon eggs because he'll try anything once. I passed. We also got a free mochi dessert for checking in here on yelp. It was real chocolate ice cream wrapped in a rice paper. It was an interesting chewy texture but still good.

Great variety of sushi! I have been able to try a few places in town and they have good service, nice location and delicious sushi. The server was able to answer any questions I had and even suggest things that were popular. I shall return!

Stopped by for a late lunch around 2pm on a Saturday. Very nice inside. We sat at the sushi bar. We had the lunch combo B. It was 8pc California rolls, 8pc tuna rolls, and 5pc shrimp tempura rolls. The combo was $15.95 and seemed like a good price. Everything was delicious. The shrimp tempura was the best of the 3. Service was excellent.

Quite good. I thought that the tamago sushi was not the typical size (kind of small...more traditional size) but the quality was good for all of the sushi we ordered. Nice vibe, good service. Probably the best in Medford. The green tea was roasted (tastes a bit like Brussel sprouts).

I felt the need to update my previous review as some Food things have changed here. I'm pretty regular at this place but always stick to Sushi. I constantly sample what others I take there get and have probably tried most cooked food on the menu. Nothing to write home about and nothing I would ever return for, it is kind of dismal. I did say the Calamari was Exceptional previously. Not anymore, now it's Awful, some of the worst i have ever had, New chef, new thick tempura batter. Avoid at all costs. For a long time now they have needed to get a Chef in that knows this type food and is creative on this side of the resturaunt, not a cook to follow old tired recipes as everything tastes bland similar over cooked and Americanized. Nothing tastes fresh and vibrant. The stuffed mussels app taste like Frozen green New Zealand's were used, not a good thing in a sushi restaurant! Avoid the cooked salmon unless you need a new sole for your shoe. I have never had teriyaki sauce like they use and don't ever want it again. It's like a bad jar sauce from walmart. You don't see specials or seasonal dishes on this side of the restaurant. I would give this side of the restaurant 2 stars, not 4. The Sushi remains the star, as it should be, I am a fan, it's as good as any in the RRV, but it could be improved. A little less rice on Nigiri pieces would be nice. There are way to many rolls on the menu. Basically the same roll done 2 or 3 ways with 1 item change. The fried rolls are average at best, always cold and not crispy, kind of doughy. They don't have a specials board or seasonal catch board for sushi either and the list of fish is always the same, that which you would find at every Basic small town chain sushi restaurant. Variety is needed, seems a little stagnant. Very clean, Very friendly, Ex Service!

Modern/clean pit stop, to ease your fish hunger. Fresh, is a word overused in the sushi world but the F-word has a strong presence here. The selection of fish put a smile on my face along with the friendly waitstaff. Beverage Bonus: Sake Flight! This Ikea-esque fish hut had a flight of five sakes to sip. The waiter detailed and suggested flavor profiles to please. Not to profile or fall into a visual stereotype but this was the first time a white-male was making our sushi - and he delivered! He was quite likely a teen but rolled like a Itamae (sushi chef). Ate: Mainly nigiri and sashimi of various fish Drank: Sake Flight (There are 3 choices - top self, mod shelf, eco shelf) Price: Well priced, affordable based on previous sushi-standards/ restaurants

I absolutely love this place! First off the waitstaff is always accommodating, quick and friendly every time I go in whether it is slow or busy, I always get great service! The sushi is fresh and delicious as is the kitchen food. I have noticed that when busy the chefs do take a bit longer, just like any other restaurant but always well worth the wait!

Big fan of this place. We just moved here from the Bay Area and I was pleasantly surprised at the freshness, variety, and flavors at Shinsei Sushi. I try to eat vegetarian/vegan most of the time and this place seemed to have some good options. Loved the vegetable Yakisoba, CA rolls, and the rest of my friends and family seemed to really like their dishes as well (variety of stuff).

I LOVE this place. They're 5 minutes away from my house so I make a lot of to go orders. My order is usually ready in 10 minutes. If I do decide to dine in, I'm usually in a rush and they're always so helpful with getting me in and out. The staff is always so great and the food is good.

Absolutely terrible fish quality. Chewy, old, and questionable safety. I tried the tuna, salmon, and river eel. All of the it was poor quality. The size of the fish was small by most sushi standards. The service was the only thing earning 2 stars or else it'd be lower.

Very nice n clean place with a good vibe. Food was good overall but the appetizers were way better than sushi. Beef yakitori was tender and shrimp tempura was light just the way it should be. Ramen broth did not seem scratch made rather with some cubes/concentrate. Sushi needed better knife work although the fish was fresh. Service was prompt. I will definitely go back and will probably order more from the non-sushi menu. Prices are good.
