"I love you when it's 35F and raining sideways" Like Lee said, a lot of times I'm the only white dude in there. I wonder if that's because there are only a couple of Vietnamese options in town. But hey, they serve some pretty good pho with all the trimmings for $6-8 and you can even grab an appetizer if you want to really bust your gut. Warning - the Vietnam crepes are not crepes at all - more of a big shrimp omelette. I haven't had great luck with the Chinese menu. Overall, it's the best giant-bowl-of-warm-soup option in town. 3.4539 stars. FYI, the building once was a Denny's (1980ish). Good call, Sophia.

Too much gristle in the beef. Good flavor and cheap prices, but I value meat quality above all else.

This place was my first Pho house in EUG Since then i have had many experiences across the country w/ Vietnamese Cuisine, some better, some worse. Vietnam Restaurant is a charming, quiet little place along west 11th situated near that sprawling Fred Meyer fr what i remember, had it not been for their large marquee i'd probably have overlooked it. The staff here is really friendly and reserved, no complaints here. The pho is pretty standard and very decently priced. IMO what makes this little noodle house stand out amongst others is their "duck egg noodle soup" i have no idea what the vietnamese name for it would be, my guess is it would translate roughly as "super friggen delicious duck meat that falls off the bone floating in a golden broth of savory and intense flavor accompanied w/ greens and tender al dente egg noodle" yeah probably more or less the exact translation.. SRSLY this is by far the best duck soup i have ever had, i refuse to even try it from anywhere else, it would corrupt the great memories i have of happily slurping this soup on figid wet days w/ a soggy book as my only dinner companion. I love this little spot, and highly recommend it, a good bang for your coin purse...so to speak.

We ordered kung pow chicken and a noodle soup. The chicken dish was about half celery and half onion with a tiny amount of actual chicken in it. The meat that was in it was greasy, looked like it had been chopped with a food processor with big chunks and lots of little rubbery bits as well as being under seasoned. The noodle soup was a giant bowl of pasty white noodles with NO broth what-so-ever and zero seasoning atop which sat a skewer of chicken which also had no seasoning. It is exceedingly clear that these people do not care about the food they put in front of you and have been getting by for I don't know how long on people eating here who don't care what they eat as long as they get a big ol' pile of it for not very much money. The Chinese food at Safeway is about 100 times better than this stuff. I seriously don't think I could cook food myself that was this bad. Service wise, no one asked me if I needed anything, if I wanted anything to drink, how the food was, etc. I wanted to get the heck out of there and made eye contact with the waitress and waved at her to indicate that I needed something and she just stared at me like I was insane. We ended up leaving eventually and going to Chow Pra Ya down the street to get a real meal. Which was delicious. Chow Pra Ya rocks. Golden Orient is terrible. Go to Chow Pra Ya. Also, this is not Pho. There are a bunch of reviews for this restaurant which are clearly talking about Pho. That is down the street and is very good if you want pho.

Relative to other places that serve Pho in this universe, this is not a five star restaurant but for Eugene - this place is as good as it gets when it comes to Pho. The price is excellent and the food is tasty - one of the best places to eat in the rainy winter months!

Cheap. Fast. Rather tasty. Disregard the griping about bowl size, I always leave this place full. I love pho when it's rainy and cold in Eugene. Nothing warms the heart and soul like Vietnamese beef noodle soup. My girlfriend likes it because they always have lots of basil and bean sprouts for pho modification, I like the 3 different chili pastes and how I'm usually the only white dude inside. Check out the pot stickers. Stay away from the bathroom.

Vietnam serves the BEST pho I have ever had. My husband and I tried to find equally good pho when we lived in Orange County, Calif., for two years (lots of pho restaurants), but nothing was quite as good as Vietnam. After moving back to Oregon last month we went to Vietnam during a quick trip to Eugene and were happy to discover that the pho hadn't changed--still delicious! The regular pho has a unique, sweet flavor, and the chicken-based soup is wonderful as well. I can't say much about anything else on the menu because we only go in for the pho. My favorite is the number 16! The service varies, but the only thing I don't like about this place is the bathrooms. They need a serious remodel that includes doors on the stalls. Luckily you can lock the main door to the bathroom and avoid and awkward encounter, but avoid them all together if you can.

First, I should say that I've had Pho and other Vietnamese food in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. I try not to compare, but it's hard. My main complaint about this place is that they cut corners by using the minimum possible number of ingredients (read: spices and vegetables) to include in every dish I've had. Vietnamese food without lemongrass, cilantro, basil, ginger, or even garlic in at least some of the dishes just isn't as good. They could dramatically improve their menu with higher quality and quantity of vegetables and spices in every dish. They are nice and service is fast. Prices are ok.

Went here on the recommendation of a friend, he said the pho was great. After trying it, I may have to rethink the friendship. The beef tasted like it had gone bad, and came with only sprouts and a few sprigs of cilantro to add to taste. My girlfriend had the cold noodle beef salad, and it was ok but very bland. Maybe we just got unlucky and ordered the two worst dishes, but I doubt it.

I haven't eaten a lot of Pho elsewhere so I can't expand on how Vietnam Restaurant stacks up against other places, but I have been to the one other place in this town which really didn't impress me. The quality of the food here is great and I've never had and order done incorrectly. Service can be a bit slow especially during lunch rush, but all in all I am very satisfied everytime I go.

Best damn pho in eugene. Been to the rest and they suck.

Food just south of O K. Service nonexistent. Waitress about as knowledgeable as a wine cork. She had NO Idea what veggies were in the Chicken Vegetable. She stammered a few "I think this" and "I think something else". Then she mumbled something about lettuce? No way! Finally I asked her to go to the kitchen and ask the chef. She returned to our table ten minutes later and was STILL NOT SURE what vegetables where included. In the meantime she was at the register placing fortune cookies on the bill trays. (Oh no, tell me she did not rub her hair and then touch the unwrapped cookies!) Back to the kitchen she went. Finally another server appeared at our table to tell us what vegetables were included. We asked for snow peas instead of carrots and were assured this was no problem. The food arrived, no snow peas and yep, carrots! No mid dinner check in, they just dropped the bill on the table. We did not touch the fortune cookies. The whole experience was good for a laugh. At one point we thought of just leaving but the wait staff was so inept that we just had to stick around to see how it all played out.

Wow! What a nice surprise! A delectable little hole, on West 11th. Beautiful, bountiful Pho' served with basil, cilantro, jalapeno, bean sprouts. Really yummy pot stickers, sure to put Lok Yuan, across street to shame. Very good Beef Chow Fun, and large portion sizes. The service was quick, the waiter was pleasant, and had food to take home. Very reasonably priced. Definitely a repeat dinner spot.

aa'ight. . . so I finally got my pho on in this town. And, Vietnam Restaurant satisfied my craving. The 6$ portion was generous. I went with a non traditional chicken version which came with more meat than I can eat. . . And they had the apropos variety of delish hoisin, sriracha, and chilie oil for me to spice up my broth with. The veg selection was a little lacking. . . and for our table of three, we probably could have used a little more sprouts, basil, and other accoutrements. . . but, I got the feeling that they would have brought more to us if we'd asked. The service was nothing to write home about (slow on the water fills, and no real checkins to see if we needed anything else), but there was only one woman working the floor too. Overall, I will happily go back when I need to satisfy my craving!

The pho tai is the best in Eugene... not only does it taste good, it makes me feel good. I also love the young coconut drink. Skip the salad rolls and bbq pork. The service is friendly and fast. The food is super affordable. Vietnam leaves something to be desired for atmosphere, but it makes up for it in deliciousness.

    (4)
  • Richard L.

Good food! The atmosphere is so-so. Food is great. Dumplings and Sweet and Sour Chicken our my favorites.

  • Jessina V.

These guys do it authentic and tasty. I love number 22 and 23. I also love the cold noodles. I forget what number they are or what they are called. Oh I can't forget about the young ju coconut water, fresh from the coconut (they even hack it with a machete in back)! I usually never trust a restaurant without plants (they have a beautiful begonia), and they also have big screen tv's now...yum.

not the cleanest looking place but if you can get past that, the lemongrass chicken with rice, was so great!!

We tried the Banh Xeo as an appetizer and it was the crunchiest I'd ever had, not healthy but really tasty. The table side accompaniments were right - fish sauce, sriracha, two chile sauces, bean paste - but no basil or mint came with it. The first time I went, I ordered the spicy pho as my main course and was pleased with the broth but the meat was fatty and boiled weird so I had to pick it out. The noodles were basic, average. On my second visit, I had the wonton and egg noodle pho and was much more impressed. My husband had the dry cooked green beans both times he visited and they were great, if not a bit expensive for what you get. They cook them with white button mushrooms and those were cooked just right. They serve them with rice to sop up the delicious sauce. The service both times was exceptional - very fast. It's a great place to go for a quick and satisfying lunch. Parent's Note: Highchairs available and the staff is very toddler friendly.

The Pho here is pretty good. But it's also really good at Yi Shen. I like this place because of the sit down restaurant. Didn't have a bad experience until the other day when I ventured out side of the Pho and ordered the duck. It was a huge portion. As I went to take my first bite I couldn't help but be overwhelmed with the seasoning that they had dumped all over the dish. That one bite was enough for me. I didn't want any more, in fact, I wanted to return it and get my money back. I asked the waiter if he would take it back and take it off the bill and he said he'd have to ask the chef. He came back after 5 minutes and said he wouldn't take it off the bill and I have to pay for it cause I ordered it. He then continued to say the reason I didn't like it was probably because of my American palette. What a jerk! I know I'm not a professional food critic but I could have done without the insult. I still like the fact that it's a sit down restaurant, but I can find better Pho at Yi Shen. The fact that they wouldn't eat the $6.50 to make sure I had a better experience made me not want to eat there again.

Went for lunch today. Had tried once before, the pho was not bad, though it did lack accompaniments as mentioned by another reviewer. I do not claim to be a Vietnamese aficionado though, just a regular guy looking to fill his tummy. Today I had the wonton with egg noodles. I wanted to see if Vietnamese was different than the Chinese wonton soup I'm used to. In a short answer, not really. The egg noodles and wontons tasted exactly the same as about a million other Chinese wonton soups I've had. The only difference was the inclusion of broccoli. I guess I shouldn't really be surprised, as they also have a "Chinese special" menu. Overall, a decent wonton noodle soup, but not much different from a dozen other chinese places. My wife however swears by their lemongrass tofu, and says its much better than the one down the street at Yi Shen, the Vietnamese Market/Restaurant. We also shared a spring roll appetizer, which was about the same as any other spring roll appetizer. Tasty but not extraordinary. The atmosphere is about the same class as a diner. The wait staff is nice and responsive though. Pros: Fast service (We got our food in under 10 minutes, appetizer in about 3. Only 3 or 4 tables were occupied, but still pretty fast.) Decent food. Friendly and responsive staff Cons: Doesn't really feel that ethnic, even though the proprietors obviously are. The atmosphere and presentation are fairly uninspired. Food isn't really much more than ordinary

My brothers and I came here for some pho. Needless to say, it is nothing like the Pho in San Diego. The bowls of pho was small and the broth was very BLAND and flavorless. We didn't try anything else on the menu, but the first time experience was so bad that I will probable avoid this restaurant.

Probably the only if not one of the only places for Vietnamese food in Eugene. They have a store in 1/2 the restaurant and the other half is the actual dining area. As mentioned previously, the dining room leaves a bit to be desired, as the walls are stacked with supplies from the kitchen (Bags of rice, etc) but at the same time it adds to the charm of the place. I recommend the Pho on a cold and rainy day. Perfect for Eugene.

    (4)
  • Jando S.

For college students in Eugene, this place is great place to fill up your appetite with $4-5 dollar Pho in addition to the $1-2 appetizers. The service has always been very pleasant and there is typically a good array of parking. Interior decorating could probably be improved but the establishment's high marks go toward their reasonable prices and quality service. For those of you hardcore Vietnamese food lovers, this place would probably be a disappointment for you. Recommended for a lunch getaway and a cheap date.

  • Kami H.

The pho is delicious. My husband and I both love the wonton soup as well (with the egg noodles). Even the chow fun is delicious (and less greasy than other places). I love going here on cold, rainy days; some hot pho really makes me feel better. I definitely recommend this place.

    (4)
  • Chris B.

Don't bother. Vietnamese in Eugene is poor, but this place was pretty bad. The Pho wasn't even right - no accompaniments, the broth tasted weird, etc. We got a few other things as well, and none of it was very good. I will not be going back.

I totally recommend the pho (Special #6)! I have been going here for at least 10 years, I moved away for awhile & I really missed this place! I went so often in college they would walk up to the table and ask, "Special number six and number four?" I still love their food, I just don't go out as much as I did in college. Don't go for the atmosphere, but the food is super good & the right price too!!

  • Mark S.

I have been here several times and I like the food. Good prices. One thing i noticed right away is the number of Asian customers. Always a good sign at any Asian restaurant. Friendly family run business, not much to look at, but I will be back for sure!

This place brings diss honor to Vietnamese cooking. The so call "pho" is shit their "bun bo hue" lacks flavor and also doesn't have a lot of the meat and veggies that are suppose be serves with it and the atmosphere is so depressing with no music and they have a tv but never turn it on and when they do turn on the tv it has no sound and is on the worse channel. Been here 2 times and that's all folks no more. Shitty service and shitty Vietnamese food. If you want real Vietnamese food and don't wanna travel out of state go to portland and hit up pho oregon or pho kim or pho hung.

Potstickers-okay. Chicken Pho-Gross! Couldn't even eat the chicken as it tasted like it was probably previously frozen and then defrosted or cooked in the microwave! Yuck! Stay away! :(

Best phö in eugene. Not many options here when you're used to Seattle. Super fast service. Delicious peanut sauce. Cheap. Huge bowl for $7. Server is short but she's taking care of the whole place! And she's been here forever :)

The fact that its not just serving vietnamese food is one of the reason why i should go back to this place. More variety less stress :p

The Pho is the star of the show. Contrary to most other food which I like fresh, I feel like the old broth that sits all day makes it taste better. I've compared it to Yi Shen's Pho which tastes too fresh like the spices haven't had a chance to come out yet. The Vietnam Restaurant Pho does give my husband a stomach ache every single time we eat here which is kind of funny. Poor man can't handle the old broth. As for the bun vermicelli salad, bland bland bland. I usually dump a bunch of Hoisin sauce on top so it tastes like something. Yi Shen's Bun salad sauce is so much better. So if you compare Yi Shen and Vietnam (since they are right next to eachother) I would say that Vietnam wins in the Pho category and Yi Shen wins in the Bun Vermicelli Salad category. I couldn't muster more than 3 stars because I've tried some of the other dishes and wasn't impressed and the waitstaff is not exactly friendly. But they are efficient.

  • Genna B.

Sorry Vietnam restaurant...nice, friendly service but awful food. Got the pho vegetarian style and it was just broth with a bag of frozen veggies tossed in it with noodles. So awful. Not even fresh veggies. Maybe their beef pho is better..?

    (1)
  • Vince N.

Whaaat the?!? The saddest Vietnamese food I have ever had. Sorry my Vietnamese peep's but you have to turn it up a notch. Banh Xeo that tasted like it was made three days ago and refried isn't acceptable. Chicken that looked like it was warmed up in the microwave. The redeeming thing was the pho, which I will be more than happy to give 2 stars. The food is cheap here, but pay a bit more for better quality and you will be happier. I don't want to bash this place, but It just wasn't good.

Excellent food. Good price. Fast service. 3-4 trips a month is not uncommon for friends and myself.

    (5)
  • Amanda C.

So bad!!!!!!!! This is a Chinese restaurant pretending to be Vietnamese. The fried spring rolls were swimming in grease and they gave us a sweet and sour dip not sweet chili sauce like it should be. The so called "vermicelli" bowl was disgusting I couldn't eat it, supper soggy mushy beef, bland noodles, with a very bad imitation of sweet chili sauce. I eat Vietnamese food all the time, and this place is not Vietnamese they obviously just say that to get people in cause pho is popular these days. I couldn't even eat my food. I told them it was horrible and they apparently get that a lot so even though I didn't eat it because I couldn't stomach it they said you "order you buy".

  • Angela M.

Awesome food. The pho is freaking great! The service is hilariously awful. I had to ask for anything I wanted, like, water. We hardly ever saw her again. The best part was the brief interaction we had with our server: Me- "Which one do you think is better #1 or #18?" Her- "WHY WOULD YOU ASK ME THAT?!" Me- "Uhhhh 'cause you work here." Recap: Food was great. Service is almost worth going for for the life experience.

  • Daniel V.

My review only covers the Pho (P6a) . The price was right and I really enjoyed the meal. The beef was a bit tough (overcooked?). Some other reviewers have complained about the broth, but I thought it was fine (I add lots of spice to mine). Address the beef and it's five stars for me.

    (4)
  • Michelle N.

Terrible service, terrible food. I've been here a couple of times and nothing had changed. The pho is decent. Too much MSG however. And it's just not good! The bun is even worse. It was cold and hard and what seemed like had been sitting out for awhile. The veggies aren't fresh and it does not taste good at all. Very poorly prepared.

  • Claire V.

I'll admit it, I was always a bit scared to eat here. The place is a rehabbed Mexican restaurant with a diner interior, and the menu has more than a few items that make a squeemish girl like myself cringe. Nevertheless, I took fellow Yelper James L. up on his challenge, and accompanied him to the Vietnam Restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised! Large portions of tasty pho and bun, booths to sit in (major plus in my book haha), and fast service. I would probably give them 3.5 stars, but I'll round it up to 4. I'd say Pho Bistro has a better quality broth with more spice complexity, but I would definitely go back, especially if I were in the area.

Just an update - dependably (very) good food. This time had the spicy beef lemongrass (my daughter's favorite), some pot stickers to start, and Chow Fun combo with extra shrimp, and my favorite Pho. Delicious across the board. Good prices, great food, no ambience at all. We like it.

Using SoCal's standard... this place isn't great... You CAN'T compare this place w/ the dedicated "Pho 999" or Pho So 1" of SoCal. But this place is GREAT if you are in heart of Lane County. Tired of the "fatty food" of Burger, Pancakes and Steaks.. a lil' broth and noodle makes the perfect mood from the drizzle and cool air of Eugene Oregon. I LOVE IT!!!

Affordable. Standard Vietnamese fare. Nothing special, but no unpleasant surprises. Not the best service ever, but I'm not complaining.

I have always passed this place by, and I wish I hadn't! The place is a dive, but the food is really good and so inexpensive for how much you get. I had the wonton soup and was pleasantly surprised by the PERFECT broth, the perfectly cooked noodles, broccoli and pork. The wontons were so yummy! My husband had the spicy lemongrass beef bowl and really enjoyed it. His favorite part of the meal was making his own concoction of a sauce with all of the condiments available. Our son had the crispy potstickers and loved them, but we liked them so much that we ended up eating several. I think I have my new favorite go to place! Updated: We went back again and the food was great. Problem was the few ants that decided they wanted to share our meal, and the two hairs we found in EACH of the condiments. Hopefully they will address these issues and continue to improve.

I've never been to Vietnam but if this pho is any sorta representation then sign me up. this place was my first pho experience - since then I have had pho all over the US and I gotta tell ya this is some good shit. plus less than 10 bucks for 2 meals worth of food - winner winner delicious dinner times 2.

This is actually my second visit, had pho last time (which was excellent by the way) but am trying the beef curry to go tonight. I also ordered what they call "salad rolls" which appear to be the rice paper wraps with raw veggies and shrimp and pork if you want it. You get two for about 3 bucks. The salad rolls were not as good as I had hoped because they had rice in them and I would rather that space be taken up by more veggies. They did come with a really good peanut sauce dip. The curry beef was very good. I asked for it very hot (most places do not have what I define as hot) and they gave me a run for my money. That curry was evil hot, yum!

This is probably one of my go-to places in Eugene. I like the food, service, and general feeling of this place. It's weird because I feel like I'm gonna get steak and eggs at this place because I swear it was once a Denny's or breakfast joint before becoming a Vietnamese restaurant. That's a funny feeling, then ending up with a big bowl of soup. Anyway, I like how quick they are with the food and how their fortune cookies are crunchy. There are places with fortune cookies all stale, but I've never had a stale cookie here. I like getting the chicken noodle soup when I'm not in the mood for the beef or the beef rice dish. The egg rolls are decent, they're a little on the small side and too oily. I don't really order egg rolls often. The spring rolls are also on the small side with very little flavor. I think I've been spoiled with good Vietnamese food having lived near Little Saigon (Westminster) for 4 years doing my undergrad. Well either way, I like the pho at Vietnam Restaurant. The guy that works there is pretty awesome and the lady is hilarious.

We went here about a year and a half ago with a vegetarian who was living with us. We had found, to our delight, that their soups are great! Out of ideas, last week, we ventured back to see what else Vietnam Restaurant had to offer. The prices are great, and you do receive 2 servings for the price of one dish. Growing up, I had Vietnamese neighbors. We'd swap food all the time- a tray of spring rolls for lasagne. Fresh baked bread for sticky rice. Dried fish for smoked salmon. It was great! Sadly, I have never found a restaurant with food comparable to Sommai's, and I miss her restaurant at the 5th St. Public Market. Due to the extreme heat, we weren't up for soup. My daughter wanted teriyaki chicken and rice or noodles of some kind (seems reasonable for an Asian restaurant to have something resembling this.) I was craving spring rolls (I can't find anyone to teach me how to make these fried pods of deliciousness!) The waitress was a sweet woman who seemed very shy. She was very uncomfortable engaging us in conversation, answering menu questions, and making suggestions. It didn't seem to be as much of a language barrier as a simple comfort barrier as her mannerisms and demeanor carried the same from table to table. I was surprised most of the dishes looked like they were lifted right off of a Chinese menu. I thought there would be more foreign-sounding or exotic dishes. My daughter got the chicken chow mein. I ordered the spring roll appetizers and the duck. The spring roll were exactly as pictured- thin rice paper on the outside, shrimp, noodles, lettuce and "stuff" on the inside. Though they were cool and would have been just the thing on a hot day, sadly, they were completely flavorless. The shrimp was not fresh, the noodles were rubbery, and there was no seasoning anywhere to be had. The most flavorful part of the spring roll was the lettuce. These were served with plum sauce on the side, which was stock and tasted just like bottled plum sauce. My daughter's chow mein was textbook and pretty good, if greasy. The chicken was cut very thin and tender. Not much veg to speak of mixed in. Flavor was just "meh." My duck was sad. I don't have much experience with duck, but it's supposed to have crispy skin- I know that much. The pieces I got were chewy and full of bones, like I was given pieces of the back of the duck plus a leg. The skin was soggy. I expected it to be somewhat greasy, but it was otherwise just basically flavorless- a little bit of salt and kind of like dark meat chicken. It was very hard to eat. It was served atop a bed of plain white rice in a pool of grease. To be honest, as rubbery and soggy as the duck was, it was as if someone put frozen duck in the microwave and nuked it. Pretty unimpressive- I didn't bother to finish it. We decided it was time to go when a group of customers came in the back door carrying a box with holes cut into the top and sides. I'm not sure what it was, but I'm pretty sure it should not have been allowed in the restaurant, let alone at a booth! We got tired of waiting at our table and trying to flag our waitress, the only one on staff, down. It took 10 minutes for her to realize we were standing at the cash register waiting for our ticket. Our fortune cookies were laid on top of a dirty black, plastic bill tray, not a clean plate or napkin or ... anything. They may as well have been given to us on the counter. I'd think it rude but she really didn't seem to think anything of it one way or another, like it was normal.

Stopped by on my way to California. My boyfriend and I were starving and was so excited to have found a Vietnamese place but when our food came, both of our tomatoes had mold on them. MOLD. Worst of all, when we politely told the older lady working there, she grabbed the plate without saying a word to us (btw, we spoke in Vietnamese, so it's not a problem of miscommunication). We would have appreciated an apology but instead she blew it off. We were so hungry that we both finished the rest of our food, paid, and left vowing to never ever come back. The service was so horrible that we contemplated not leaving any tip.. I am still mortified thinking back at this experience.

We eat at Vietnam Restaurant more than anywhere else in Eugene. It's cheap, fast and very delicious (much like me). For $6.50-7.50, you'll get a wonderful, steaming bowl of noodle soup the size of your head or excellent fried rice or Chow Fun. I always order the noodle soup: very yummy broth, noodles, meat (if you want it), and a few veggies. The Pho comes with an accompaniment of cilantro, basil, jalapeno, lime and bean sprouts; the other soups don't, but you can just ask for this. I've never had anything take more than five minutes to arrive, and when it comes, it's hot and tasty (much like me). This is the perfect place in Eugene for a rainy afternoon or a hangover. If you're not already a devotee, a warning: Vietnam is kinda creepy. The booths are worn down and the light fixture in the bathroom is a bare bulb. Usually, there's traditional Vietnamese music playing overhead; it always sounds like someone's using a foreign language to lecture me via a high-pitched story-song about the dangers of taking more than one's share at the dinner table or losing your chance at marriage by being boastful, for example.

i cannot believe all the whack reviews on here. seriously guys you're in EUGENE you barely have restaurants NOT run by white people, this place is legit. give me a freakin break. i live in LA and go to eugene to visit boyfriend and his family. every time i come up here we visit this place at least once. this is solely based on the pho and the spring rolls... and they're both GREAT. i will even say a TON better than a lot of the places down here in LA. seriously though. i love food and i love pho and this place is fantastic, fast and inexpensive. and there is endless sauce on the table, something you don't get down here.

Eugenians must be really desperate for pho. Although saying that this is the best pho is town isn't much. I'm a Vietnamese girl from California with a mother who is skilled at making pho and bun bo hue blindfolded with her hands tied behind her back, so I'd like to say I know what I'm talking about. Even then, I'm not a huge pho snob and I'll let certain things slide like the coloring of the broth (the clearer the better). Just need good meats and portions, and I'll eat it. Even then, this place was a no go. I had the pho tai nam, which has beef tendon and flank. Meats did not taste very fresh and were pretty tough to chew. The broth was heavy of mediocrity and quite dark. Nonetheless, it was well portioned and I ate most of it. My sister got some sort of duck noodle soup with the duck meat being so tough she could barely get the meat off the bones. The real one-star earning dish though was the bun bo hue that my dad got. For those of you who aren't aware, bun bo hue is from the central region of Vietnam. Though that region has their own unique dishes, a lot of pho places will serve that food as well because it's very popular. There is a huge difference between this dish and pho. The broth is different, the meat is different, the noodles are different with the only similarity being that they are noodle soups. When the bun bo hue came out, my dad instantly said, "Bad bad bad idea..." Bun bo hue is often very red looking because its broth is very spicy. His bowl looked exactly like my bowl of pho but with just a ton of chili in it. Same noodles, same meats, and I didn't even want to taste the broth. My dad went through about a third of the dish and couldn't go on even longer. If these cooks cannot tell the difference between the two dishes, then they need a lot of learning to do.

The food is fine here, but the pho doesn't really turn me on like it does for my fellow Yelpers. Frankly, I drive to Portland or even better, Seattle for pho that really makes me happy. The pho at Vietnam was generously portioned and served quickly, but it seemed sort of one dimensional and flat, even after I added the garnishes. The wonton soup was okay, too, but I dumped a lot of hot sauce into it. I ordered coconut juice and was amused to find that it's served with a straw jammed inside a plastic wrapped coconut. I kind of like the run down atmosphere, down to the random bare lightbulb in the bathroom. It adds character.

Vietnam looks a bit outdated on the outside and the inside. This doesn't stop me from enjoying their food. Here's what i've gotten there that i've enjoyed: Potstickers Wonton Egg Noodle Soup And #22... I forgot the name, but it's delicious. It's Rice Noodles with Beef, Chicken and Shrimp. So Delicious! They get a 4 stars instead of a 5 because of the poor lady that works there. She is the only one waiting on tables and delivering food, so the service is sometimes lacking. Go get you some!

Usually when I'm next to broke, I really can't help but spend a little bit on a good meal with a friend. To spend $6.50 on a fast food meal on hard seats and loud hustle and bustle or to spend it on a bowl of pho with some thai iced tea with quiet conversation? Psh! To Vietnam Restaurant we go!!! Same old story, as soon as you enter you're seated and expected to order in less than a minute. While I do hate being rushed, the food here is good enough for me to want to hurry up and start eating myself! So this last time I went, I decided to venture away from the pho side of the menu and look towards the back, where they had meat, rice, and veggie dishes. The pho here is good, like any other bowl of pho it hits the spot. But there's no tripe, so I can't say that it's my favorite place to get pho. Anyhow, I chose to eat the BBQ duck with rice and vegetables and it was FAN-TAS-TIC!!! Delicious, perfectly cooked so the meat's soft and fell off the bone, and the sauce and spices that it was cooked in was wonderful. I ate that duck up like it was my last meal on earth. It wasn't greasy, it wasn't gross, it wasn't overwhelming at all! It was all kinds of wonderful that I just put myself in a food coma for the next hour. Usually I add some spice to my meal, but the taste of this duck felt so right, I didn't want to ruin it by adding anything to it. THAT good :) Aside from the food and very speedy service, I like this place cause it's comfortable and quiet. I like being able to enjoy comfort food and catch up with friends without having to talk loudly over others and squirm about readjusting my seat. I'll be going back the next time I get low on money and could use a good time!
