We had early dinner so much fun. The waiter was fun and the staff was great. It was the best food we have enjoyed in Eugene. Lots of great tequilas to choose from and very accomodating. It would take days to see their collection of items throughout the place. Recommending to friends and family.

Just great! Service, food and Margaritas. Salsa, bean dip, enchiladas and herradura Margaritas with fresh lime.. No mix! I'll be back very soon.

Food: Ok. Not terrible, but certainly does not distinguish itself. Drinks: They are ok, but are WAY overpriced for what you get and always seem to be light on alcohol. Service: Inconsistent and very slow, which for Eugene means pretty good. Still Salsa: TERRIBLE Atmosphere: doesn't do itself any favors. The foyer makes it look like a cheap Mexican convenience store. Kind of creepy. Sadly, this may be the best Mexican place in town. Go to Portland.

Unacceptably slow service. 30 minutes until our drinks came out, when they were not even particularly busy. Decent food, but every aspect of the dining experience was disappointing- our server never even apologized for how long everything was taking. It seemed like the other server who was in the outside section was very on top of it, and he eventually picked up some of the slack once we alerted the host/manager(?) to the fact that we had been waiting for 30 minutes for our drinks and nachos (to say nothing of the entries we had ordered 15 minutes after we placed out drink/app order), but it was too late at that point. Will not be returning.

I came here hoping for reasonable prices, tasty food and a strong margarita. The margarita was good, although it was certainly not worth $9. I've had tastier (and stronger) for $4. I ordered the vegetarian tamales, and they were okay until I noticed they were cold in the center. At least the rice and beans were warm? The grand total for this very mediocre meal was $25 (!!!). All that said, our server was great. He was super friendly and courteous, and when I forgot my boxed leftovers he ran outside to give them to me. He's the reason I didn't give this restaurant one star.

We had a wonderful evening here. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere was great. It's relaxed, unhurried, and delicious. I can't believe it took me so long to actually try this place. The flavors were not what you would find at your typical local "Mexican" restaurant. If that is what you want don't eat here. If you don't like cilantro you also might want to stay away, because there was so much amazing, delicious cilantro. We had Chile Verde, tamales, and Pupusas. All of them were amazing. The beans, rice and guacamole were all superb. The salsa was good too, and I'm awfully picky about salsa. Addressing some of the other posters' issues: It's cluttered with amazing kitschy stuff. It's awesome. People who don't like the food are probably looking for a particular flavor, the food will not make someone looking for food that tastes like every other place in town happy. Check out the menu and prices before ordering at any restaurant. Someone complained that is cost them $25 to eat here. This isn't a taco cart. We were here on a Thursday night, and the service was wonderful but not rushed. We avoid eating out on weekends because almost anywhere you go it's crowded and awful.

In town for a conference, looking for a local place with personality and stumbled upon this restaurant. I don't know who the yuppies are that are talkin smack about the decor, because we thought it was kitsch and fun and unique as hell! The margaritas were the best I've ever had in my entire life, but you MUST pay an extra buck for the puréed fruit juice. The first we had seemed a little light on alcohol, asked for a double the second time and we were loaded. In all, our party tried the raspberry, passion fruit, mango, and guava. I had a sip of the two I didn't order and they were all immaculate. Honestly, that purée was so good I'd have paid the same price for a virgin. We ordered Pico de gallo and the guacamole. The owner was our waiter and brought us all three of their house salsas to taste. They were all great. The chips might have been store bought (hadn't really thought about it till reading other reviews) but they were still bomb! Our parties entrees included taco salad, Margherita prawn tacos, baja prawn tacos, and a beef bacon taco -- we all loved everything! We left tipsy, super full, and really happy. The owner/waiter was great, he was very welcoming, kind, and funny. This ain't Azteca, you're signing up for an authentic Latin American dining experience. That means wining and dining and savoring your meal and your company. If you're a chain-chasin snob or in a hurry, go find a Taco Bell. If you want a delicious meal in a cool atmosphere and care about having a dining experience as much as being fed, give this place a try.

This restaurant is one word: Wow! Brought my family here, and everyone enjoyed the food. The bean dip was amazing, highly recommended.

Went here yesterday hoping for some good tacos to wind down a afternoon of hiking. It was a Saturday night and the place was almost dead... Perfect. Service should be speedy then! We were starving. It took probably 5 minutes for waters. 10-15 for chips and salsa and to order. I had to ask if anyone was even going to come speak with us. That disappointed me. The food took around 20 minutes. There was 2 other tables besides us. One was already done eating, the other arrived shortly after. The chips seemed old, salsa was okay. The tacos.... Were amazing. The tacos themselves deserve 5 stars. I tried 3 different ones, all great. Our server was friendly but seemed frantic. I'll give this place another shot because the food was good. But not somewhere I'd highly recommend sadly.

This place is unique and authentic! My boyfriend and I had dinner here on our drive back home one evening and we had the best time! The service that Oscar gave us was a 10+ and the food was top notch! Everything from the salsa, horchata and Pupusas was delicious! They are only open for dinner so make sure to catch them after 5pm!

Wildly inconsistent. When they're good, they're great. Great food, amazing Margaritas, fun service. But when they're bad, they're awful. And I think they're trending downhill. Last time I went, they were "out" of vegetarian tamales, and only let us know when the other orders were nearly done. Unacceptable--and the new server kept hinting that we were getting bad service because we were at a side table. It's hard for me to write a bad review, because this has been one of my absolute favorite dining spots in town. I've often recommended them to my friends. Bottom line: don't rely on them for attentive service, but if you're looking for a summer patio hangout with great Margaritas and your friends are really laid back, go for it. Not recommended if you're trying to impress out-of-town friends, family, or dates.

I loved everything I had here on Saturday. The guacamole is chunky and fresh with cilantro. I had the a la carte tacos to eat. Chorizo, al carbon and tequila lime prawn. My faves being the chorizo and prawn. It is not your typical Mexican joint. It's more flavorful and the seasoning is more robust. And the refried beans were amazing! My daughter had the enchiladas and cleaned her plate. The owner was our server and he was friendly and informative. This is hands-down, the best food I've had in Eugene. I will be back!

La Oficina is fresh, healthy, and vegetarian/vegan friendly. The interior is interesting and has displays for local artists. The server was friendly and attentive (and provided a very charming, very brief snippet of unexpected dinner entertainment). The cook came out halfway through our meal to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Clean restaurant and clean eating, and reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?

  • Jessie S.

Yum!!! The service was quick, the staff was warm and welcoming, and the food was the best Mexican food I've ever had in Eugene! Plus, we got free tequila shots ;) I'm going back for sure.

I don't understand all the complaining in here! I went there with my family and had the best Mexican food in Eugene. I had a chicken burrito that was just delicious. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The house made enchilada sauce had a complex flavor and was really good. It came with melted cheese on top and even though it was huge I almost finished the whole thing. My mom said her tacos were great (1 tempeh and 1 fish) and my dad liked the salsa verde on his burrito quite a bit. My only complaints were that it was kind of cold in the restaurant and a little pricey for Eugene. But the flavors were spot on, I look forward to returning.

I love a whole lotta crazy crap on the walls. I do. So on that front, I kinda love this place. But I feel no need to return. We had a dinner out here earlier this year with some dear friends. I don't remember a thing about the food. Okay, so maybe one thing: it had no heat. I asked for some jalapeno. It arrived on a tiny dish, sliced thinly lengthwise and stripped of all its seeds. It tasted like a pepper but had no heat whatsoever. They charged me a buck for it. That little pissy-fit aside, there are plenty of other places in Eugene to get decent, even great, Mexican food. Keep on walking.

We came to La Oficina on a recommendation at a nearby doctor's office two blocks away. The two women (mother and daughter, as well) had just had lunch there and raved about the food. So- my mom and I decided to try it as well. It was a nice experience. We waited until they opened again at 4:30 pm and started off our meal with magaritas (on the rocks) and chips, salsa and home made fresh guacamole. Yum! Drinks were excellent and large, and the salsa was flavorful. The meal was tasty, I got the enchiladas with red sauce on one, and green sauce on the other. Very good. Spanish rice, and roasted veggies. Our waiter was Oscar, (the owner) and he took so much time and attention to make sure we enjoyed our visit and our food. Very good meal- and mom and I were glad we tried it. Our total tab was around $40, but that was with drinks and dessert. We'll be back the next time I'm in Eugene!

The pupils are fantastic and so is the mole. The margaritas are well made and nicely sized. Cannot recommend highly enough. I was super excited to see a restaurant advertise Salvadoran and they delivered fabulously!

  • K J.

Is this place some kind of sick joke? Cold chips from a bag and they charged us for splitting the bill three ways. Will never go back.

  • Andrew C.

I was amused by the decorations, but that is about the only nice thing I can say. I was very dissappointed with their service: my friend tried to order something vegan, but they brought her dish COVERED in cheese and sour cream! Then, on the second attempt to get it right, it STILL had cheese all over it. It looked like they had made a sloppy attempt to just pick the cheese off. I cannot believe an established restaurant in the middle of Eugene is unaware of what "vegan" means. (Yet again, I could have foreseen this by checking the comments on yelp!) Plus they could have been more polite about the whole situation. I think we were rather patient about it. I myself ordered one of their burritos. It was rather dull tasting. And overpriced. There are plenty of better choices for Mexican food in Eugene.

  • Rick S.

Great service, we loved our server very much. He was kind and he laughed at my jokes. Everything was too expensive. A side of beans and rice was $6.50. Also, chips were store bought. (I'm guessing) anyway, they weren't very good. But! We still had a good time!

    (3)
  • William C.

I will like to start by saying that the service was not even close to being quick, but this is not the sole reason for this review. The food I ordered my first time, which was an order of tamales, was not great in its taste. Certainly lacked some ethnic flavors in its taste. Portions were tiny compared to the price you are paying. Lastly, something I found unpleasant was that for an item on the menu (could be true for others) is only able to be made from one worker and if that worker is absent, you have limited choices on the menu. I can say that the servers are friendly but the overall experience of this restaurant was unsatisfying. Needs some improvements all around before it becomes better.

I was tricked by the sign outside that said 'vegetarian food' so I unknowingly ate here once. Never again. I tried coming in for lunch on May 5th, but they were closed. Weird. For some reason I went back. They were open, but there were no customers inside, even though it was dinner time. It didn't take long to figure out why! Store-bought chips, crappy bland salsa, tacky liquor decorations everywhere, and rude rude people. They say their food is vegetarian, but the rice is obviously cooked in chicken broth. When I called them out on it the cook showed me the seasoning he used, and sure enough, 'natural flavorings' were listed. Being a vegetarian for over a decade, I have done my homework and know that 'natural flavorings' can be a blanket term for a number of things, including meat products...and the flavor I tasted was unmistakable--it was chicken. And who serves rice pilaf with green peas and carrots at a Mexican restaurant? People who don't want customers to return I guess. P.S. Thank you for proving my point in your response. RUDE!

La Oficina is my favorite spot in town for a Margarita! The atmosphere inside is fun, comfortable, and amusing. The owners are extremely welcoming. I love that I can get grilled veggies as one of my sides instead of both rice and beans. The pupusas are my favorite by far. We mostly enjoy the authenticity of La Oficina and its a nice change from Mexican food (which I also love)! It's a top spot for my friends and enjoy a lunch or dinner during the nice weather, they have a limited amount of outdoor seating but it's great if you can snag a table! Oh and it's a good place for birthdays, they play a fun jam on the loudspeaker for you and give you a little treat!

  • Stacey C.

I just love the owners, helpful, friendly, and genuine. My folks come out to visit from Michigan about twice a year and we always go here at least once and they remember our whole family every time! My mom can be difficult when ordering a drink because she doesn't eat much sugar, so she always asks for lime juice but not the sweet stuff (which she has gotten in other places numerous times) and they hand squeezed limes for her! I recommend the pupusas or the mole, but I've tried so much and loved it all!! Great place to have a meal with friends!!

  • Lily L.

Horrible experiences both times I went here. Never again! If you want to sit in an empty, awkward restaurant and be annoyed by the owner/server while he pushes drinks and desserts on you so that you can drink watery cocktails or overly priced, too sweet margaritas and pay $15 for bland, soggy food - then you found your spot!

    (1)
  • Jessica F.

Incredibly fresh. Unlike other Mexican restaurants, the food isn't greasy and overly cheesy- because it doesn't need to be! I've never had tilapia as good as it was in the tacos, and enchiladas weren't too saucy or cheesy; you could actually taste everything in them.

  • Jason S.

La-O is not good, it's not even decent, it's bad. I would say that if I wanted more authentic mexican food I would walk across the street and go to Rivas. And Rivas is not good- it's decent. I came here with my boyfriend expecting Salvadorian food and got bland, overpriced, under-portioned food. The waiter was friendly but he was VERY inattentive and aloof. He looked like he just got off being on tour from Reggae Sunsplash as a roadie, and his waiter skills were weak. I am really going to start listening to these yelp reviews one day and stop the benefit of the doubt nonsense. STAY AWAY! It's not worth 25.00 for two entrees. That is two under portioned entrees with no drinks, no cokes, no beers, nothing!!!! Water, one burrito, (with no sides, just a medium sized burrito) and a two mole (way too sweet, tasted burnt) enchilada, with yellow, unseasoned rice and veggies. I am not exaggerating on this one

Like others, I went in really wanting to like this place. And like others I left vaguely, but undeniably disappointed-- like I had just paid for a nice restaurant experience but got just more of the same crap college-student fare that seems ubiquitous in Eugene. The restaurant is run out of a festively-decorated converted home, and the private outdoor seating is nice on a cool summer evening. And the food itself wasn't all that bad. But it wasn't great either. And I could swear my margarita-- despite its $8 price tag-- did not have an drop of tequila in it. La Oficina could be a nice restaurant. It could be. But to get there, it needs to lower it's price 25% or improve the quality of its food (and drinks).

    (2)
  • Richard B.

Despite the decor, the food was surprisingly, ridiculously, good. Whoever the chef is, he-she isn't getting payed enough. Rarely do I eat somewhere where everything on the plate (including the garnish) was crazy good.

Will not return. $12 for an enchilada plate? Are you kidding? I had combo plate with veggie tamale,(unremarkable), cheese enchilada with green sauce. It was ok. and Chlie Relleno, stuffed with potato and cheese. Seemed as though there was no cheese. This combo platter was $18. The food quality does not warrant the high prices. Oh, the chips? Store bought. They sell a nacho appetizer with these for $8. Waiter was friendly but did not check up on us after serving. Food didn't sit well in my belly later. My wife liked it.

I knew I was going to be disappointed when I showed up here to meet some friends and noticed that it looked just like Taco Loco, which I've sworn off as the worst restaurant food I'd ever had. We'd made reservations for a large group. Nothing was set up for us, but since the place was empty (6pm on a Friday), we were able to choose our section. Our friendly waitress helped us to push a few tables together. We were comfortable until the manager came out, told us that our arrangement was not okay, and that we'd have to put the tables back where they were. He was very rude and did not offer any assistance. I split a $10 margarita with my husband, which was decent, but not worth $10. The chips we were served looked like they might have been made in-house... 3 days ago. They were greasy but not warm. It also seems that they ran out, because half of our basket was filled with round chips that looked like Tostitos. I ordered tequila-lime chicken fajitas. It came out on fire, which looked impressive, but the taste was very bland. I didn't taste any marinade or spices at all on my chewy chicken and overly-soft onions and bell peppers. I was served two small microwaved white flour tortillas. My sides were "grilled vegetables," which were actually mushy microwaved broccoli and carrots, and refried beans, which came out as a liquid salty puddle. Not edible. For the money we spent eating this trash we could have had a really nice meal at Belly, plus drinks.

I really want to like this place more It has such great ambiance and is perfect or parties!! Our food was ok. The tamale was the best thing we had. I'm going to try this place a couple more times and see if there is more on the menu that is better. The Mole sauce is way to sweet.

Loved it! Had tempeh tacos with a lovely side of beans. Kudos to them for even offering tempeh on their menu. Service was great on our take-out order. You definitely get the feeling that it is a family owned establishment. I definitely reccomend this for great tasting and authentic El Salvadorian food in Eugene.

Ok, I feel like they deserve a bit more than two stars. I will list off some of the positives to give some balance: - They have a super nice outdoor area. - The wait staff has always been nice and accommodating. - A lot of their dishes can be made vegetarian (Their mole is vegetarian and tofu can be substituted in most dishes). - Their drinks are well made, but can be a little pricey. We like going here when we're in the mood for Mexican food (we live super close by). We are aware that it can get pretty pricey if you get a drink or two with your meal. We'll continue coming here to sit outside and sip a decent margarita.

Tried this place a few nights ago for a casual dinner. Probably not my favorite Tex-Mex style food, but it was fairly decent. Chips were grocery store variety and not warm or fresh and salsa was a little watery, but they were free, so there's that. I got the chicken enchiladas with green sauce, rice and grilled veggies. Loved the green sauce, and the margarita was not too shabby either. Husband had a mojito and another entree with the green sauce, which he also enjoyed. A little pricy for this sort of food, but I'd go back to try a few more dishes.

Really tasty Mexican food nestled right in downtown Eugene. My beef tacos (not ground but grilled) were excellent as were the refried beans and rice sides. It has a wonderful family feel to it and the decor is lively and is what larger chains attempt to evoke but usually flub. Highly recommended for great Mexican food!

  • Rachel B.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their mango margaritas! Great place to bring some friends, grab some mexican food and get schwasted! It's close to downtown and campus so it's an easy walk and the owner is AWESOME! Seriously, check this place out it's really fun, especially for a group that's not like a whole bunch of "foodies" like these yelpers. The food is good, it's regular mexican food, fresh, hot, and delicioso, but maybe not super original and fancy. The ambiance is really awesome and fun, I'd go to check it out with some friends have some drinks and munch on some chips and salsa, I PROMISE you won't be disappointed! :)

One of the better Mexican restaurants in town. Great house made salsas, ask for the extra hot. Friendly owner. Vegetarian options :)

This place is run by the same peeps as Taco Loco, if that means anything to you. Instead of boring you with too many details, I'll give my bullet-point summary of why I haven't been back in over a year: - Burritos, while filling, taste much too strongly of bay leaves. - The service, while polite, is slow. - The mole is far too sweet. It should not taste or look like a dessert. - The decor is in that tired, played-out, Lots-of-Crazy-Crap-On-the-Walls style. You might find it fun; I find it cluttered and discomfiting. - The music is invariably reggae. I've lived in Eugene long enough that I'd rather hear elevator music. I guess I wouldn't mind quite so much if it wasn't the same dozen Marley songs and "Legalize It" played in a loop. It may be worth a try if you're in the 'hood, which I often am. If you have a better experience, please post about it, because I have found myself wishing that this place would improve.

Love this place! I'm vegetarian and my husband eats seafood, and we always get great food. Definitely try their pupusas with mole sauce, chile rellenos, sopes with grilled vegetables, tofu/tempeh enchiladas, etc. Also great drinks, smoothies, margaritas, pina coladas.

  • Matt S.

This place went a bit downhill lately. Cutting costs on stuff like guacamole (basically all pico de gallo w/ a tiny bit of avacado). It wasn't great before, but fun and passable. Not so sure now. The chips and salsa are the worst I've had in any Mexican restaurant. A lot of restaurants are probably cutting corners.

If sloppy, horrible, Mexican food, with a long wait in an empty place is your thing, then this is your place. I just wanted to warn you.

  • Shane O.

After moving midtown, I've found myself here on numerous occasions out of convenience. That said, I have had time to ponder why I like it, despite some particulars. First, I really like the outdoor area - perfect for an early evening summer meal or drink. Second, I hadn't eaten good mexican/latin food since moving from Chicago, and after eating at La Oficina I realize that particular thought hadn't crossed my mind again. Third, there are a bunch of tasty vegetarian options that defy standard mexican cheese-i-tude and don't make me feel as if i'm eating a fraction of a dish. Fourth, the salsa options are great and can stand up on their own rather than being just a filler before the food comes. We've had some good drinks here and some bad drinks, but I would call that a product of our taste rather than the merit of a certain drink. Although, I do not think there will ever be a good place for Suaza Gold on anyone's palette and certainly don't think that margaritas deserve to be subjected to this liquor. I can recall varying degrees of happiness with my experiences here, but have never left disappointed.

  • Sheree W.

I feel the need to update my review - yes, with another 5 stars. I went back and read other reviews. I can only speak for the vegetarian options. First off, my family and I greatly appreciate that La Oficina offers some creative veg options, unlike MOST restaurants that aren't vegetarian. When we go to other Mexican restaurants, we pay the same price for plates sans the meat and guess what the side dishes are....more of the same - beans and rice. Not only do the veg options here have lots of flavor, there are many to choose from! Service and ambiance are also huge factors. This isn't the best Mexican food I've had, but the service has always been great when we've been there and the atmosphere is just fun. Our favorite table is by the fireplace. We'll keep coming back - maybe we'll run into one of these "off nights", but it happens. I think it's really unfair to give a negative review to a restaurant based on one visit, unless it's just so atrocious. A lot of places in Eugene give bad service and the ambiance isn't anything special. Be nice to the folks who go out of their way to give good service. This is, after all, their livelihood. Don't be so quick to jump on yelp and dis.

  • Sean S.

I've been here many times. They do have off nights. That being said I've had some of the best Mexican food ever at la Officina, and there sister restaurant Taco Loco. All home made sauces and salsas. If you can handle some serious heat ask for the extra hot sauce... Smokey and spicy sooo good. The tacos are great. The chorizo burrito is great. Add bacon to anything to send It over the edge. With tofu and tempeh on the menu it's great for veggies also. Get the oscars ultimate marg. This place is family run and defiantly worth a try.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
