Stopped in for some BBQ today, and was disappointed to find that they were out of 3 of the sides, one of which I really had my heart set on. I was also disappointed to be served a plain white roll with my lunch instead of the promised cornbread. The chicken was ok, though the skin was rubbery. The bbq sauce (which could have, SHOULD have) been the saving grace of the whole experience was sadly bland. Also, it's overpriced for the quality of what is served. I do want to say that I tried fiance's baked beans side, and they were delicious. So, if you do go here, definitely stick with that side dish.

Fatty pork. No beef. The sauce is a vinegary tomato swill that drowns the sub par meat. If this place was in the south they would run him out of town. Stay away.

What can I say, the best bbq I've had in Oregon without a doubt, not to mention Ken is hilarious and might just be a genius. i'm still waiting for that apartment building with his restaurant on the bottom.. But then again i'd probably miss the red shack with a hose on the side. As far as the food goes, go for the Pulled pork sandwich, 5.50. Simple.. meat, sauce, bun = Delicious. Beware very limited seating.

Great prices, great food & super nice owner! We had the pulled pork sandwiches with the BBQ beans for $6.50! We did takeout & I can't wait to try the ribs and brisket.

Every time I have come here I've gotten amazing service. The food is good, and plentiful. I'm one that enjoys sauce, so it's great for me, but they are willing to put it on the side if needed. They are frequently out of brisket, and ribs the past couple times were a little tough, otherwise I'd give them 5 stars.

The good news. The ribs where deliciously smokey. The sauce was sweet and spicey. Now the bad news. The ribs were not baby backs or St Louis. The ribs were tough and chewy. The sauce was runny and needed tightening up. The were only 2 sides available. The cole slaw and beans were both mediocre. No corn bread to mop up the tasty sauce. :( The smoker is awesome and deserves better meat.

Awesome! We shared a King's Cup and onion rings, so good! Everything was great. They were out of brisket, but that's because this is real bbq that takes time. The only things we would change - turn off the TV and put the sauce on the side. Other than that, so good! I think it is very reasonably priced as well!

We decided to give BBQ King another try. We arrived within a half hour of opening, and ordered carry-out. The Specials board listed collared greens, which we ordered. They were out of it. The BF tried the brisket again. It was better than before, but not great. I had the pulled pork. The top bun was really soggy, and the pork had pieces of fat in it. Actual postage stamp-sized pieces of fat mixed in with the pork. I did not finish my lunch. The baked beans now have black beans in them, which is a plus. However, they still look and taste like they came from a can. We were also told by the counter staff that they were waiting for "him" to bring them a till--we would need to either pay with exact change or use a credit card. Luckily, we had a credit card. I really want to like BBQ King. Like I said in my prior review, I used to go to the food cart across from Safeway, and the food was great. It will be a long time before I think about trying it again.

The customer service of this place is reminiscent of the Soup Nazi. From the moment we walked in the door after standing in line for a half hour, we heard about their rules: no seating incomplete parties (even though the rest of our party was within minutes of arriving); no separate checks; and a rude waiter. Also, Th food was a disappointment from the hype. We won't be back. Re-evaluate people, you're not great.

This is what Texas BBQ is all about. A stand on the side of the road with a smoker out back and a friendly cook. I go here as often as I can during the summer months for the pulled pork sandwich and the best, most simple coleslaw there is. It definitely beats out all other barbecue in Eugene/Springfield (including Papa's Soul Food). Give it a try, and be willing to sit on the tables to chat it up.

Ken makes amazing BBQ. First time walking by his stand at a University street fair I could smell how good his food is. He is right across from Safeway in a Red Stand with his Smoker in the back. His menu is a bit limiting: Chicken Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Hot Link Sandwich, Chicken Dinner, Rib Dinner, Half/Full Rack, Rib Tips (that's bout it) and he might not have everything available when you show up. However, the food is amazing. I've tried his rib dinners, rib tips basket, and chicken sandwich and have absolutely LOVED it. Give him a try he knows how to cook. The food is priced really well! He also does catering! Note: seating is limited to outdoor plastic tables.

Yes this is a tiny shack-type takeout or eat out business. If your not looking, you will miss it. It is across the street from Safeway on 18th. Cash only. The food is DELICIOUS! The owner is very nice. YUM.

BBQ King moved from its little stand into the old Big Town Hero building on 18th and Willamette. I was disappointed to lose the Big Town Hero, but so excited to try out this BBQ place! My kids and I shared the $16 King's Cup, which is 4 meats and 2 sides. The sides were cole slaw and baked beans. For the meats, we chose double rib tips (I thought it said tri-tips), ribs, and chicken. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich. The GOOD: This is some of the most amazing BBQ I have ever had!!! BBQ places typically have a tendancy to overcook and dry out their meat. BBQ King marinates and cooks it tender, but still juicy. Not quite falling off the bone, but not chewy. It was amazing. Even the chicken, a breast served sliced, was not a bit dry. My husband's pulled pork (on his sandwich, ya pervs!) was tender and flavorful. The rib tips (exactly what it sounds like- chopped off tips of ribs) were amazing. My husband's pulled pork sandwich was gratifyingly sloppy. Definitely need both hands and a truckload of napkins to get through. He didn't know the cole slaw came atop the pork, and didn't enjoy that as much (not a cabbage fan,) but looOooved his sandwich! Price/portion really impressed me. We could easily have fed 2 more people off of the portion size on the King's Cup. The variety available was a bonus, too. Customer service was great. Two teenagers running the show when we were in. Great attitude, very knowledgeable about product, good upsell. The other customers in the restaurant were all men, which was a little weird. We were the only family in the joint. A woman came in briefly for a take-out order. It was stone quiet- good music (oldies, jazz) and very little background noise- everyone was too busy eating! Food came out in a timely manner and was well worth the wait! The BAD: The BBQ sauce was way too spicy for us, and only one type available. I prefer a sweeter, honey-BBQ. The rub/marinade (whichever they use) has good enough flavor that we didn't use much of the BBQ sauce. I was very glad to have gotten it on the side, it was way too spicy for my daughter, and for me it would have killed the flavor in the meat. The cole slaw tasted *just* like KFC. A bit fresher, but the same recipe to the letter. I was hoping for something unique and original, some new twist on cole slaw. I mainly ate the cole slaw to cool off the heat from the BBQ sauce on my tongue. The baked beans were really bland and (imo) overcooked. They were saucy. It wasn't a bad taste, just not much flavor to them at all- no bacon, no kick, no.. nothing- just refried, unseasoned beans. Had a couple of bites and was done- portion on the beans was huge. I don't know anybody who can eat 2 cups of beans in a sitting, and I'm not sure I want to. ;D Drink choices were fairly limited to Pepsi products or water. No homemade iced tea, sweet tea, lemonade or anything else we are used to seeing at a BBQ restaurant. The UGLY: Styrofoam and plastic everywhere. This is Eugene- I was also hoping for more "green" business practices. All in all I am so glad we tried this place out! I would definitely come back for the meat any day- hold the sides and maybe bring my own container.

Overall mediocre bbq. Not many choices, so at first it SEEMS to be a "do one thing and do it well" joint. Not so much. Good cinnamon taste in the rib rub. For $22, I expected baby back ribs. What I got was a heaping paper plate full of spare ribs. I wasn't disappointed with the portion size though. Smoked nicely with a good smoke ring, just one rub/sauce option...not really an option as much as eat it or don't. Half the menu was crossed out/86d. I'll try Happy's next time instead.

So my fiancé and I just relocated from Texas and were needing to feed our carnal desires for BBQ today. We've been avid yelp users since moving to Eugene and this "Southern" BBQ spot has good reviews and we though it might give us a taste of home....boy were we wrong. Southern eh? So my question is where are your southern BBQ sides? I've been eating BBQ since I was in diapers and NEVER before have I been anywhere in the south that didn't serve potato salad or Mac n cheese or collard greens or green beans or fried okra or cornbread or black eyes peas (need I go on?) Seriously the only sides available were BBQ beans & coleslaw (when we asked for the onion rings we were told they were out). Again nothing southern or flavorful about either. The slaw looked like it was out of a bag and tasted like...well nothing. The beans were a mix of black beans and pinto with a hint of jalapeño, which was the only flavor present. Last time I checked "southern" BBQ beans have molasses, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, bacon or brisket, and some kind of a kick. The jalapeño was nice but these totally misses the mark. On to the meat. I got the rib plate and my fiancé got the rib tips. So basically, worst ribs ever. The BBQ sauce they were slathered in hardly tasted like BBQ at all, it was more like a watered down tangy ketchup. The ribs themselves were meaty; however you literally had to chew the meat off the bone. Last time I checked southern BBQ stays on the pit so long they fall off the bone. These tasted like they had been on for a couple of hours before they were pulled off and thrown on a plate. Biggest pet peeve ever....THEY DIDN'T PULL OFF THE MEMBRANE!!!! This only shows just how little they actually care, if you can't preform this simple step you should probably get out of the game. So I've been using yelp for 2 years now and I actually created a profile today just to right this review. Partially because I'm a scorned southerner and partially to warn others against this joke of a BBQ joint. If you're going to label yourself as something, you should probably do your research on what it is your "trying" to be. The ONLY reason I give this place 1 star is because you have to in order to create a review. There's nothing southern and nothing BBQ about this place. I've been in the restaurant biz for 9 years and been an avid BBQ fan for longer. I have even been a BBQ judge at a couple of events. This has to be hands down the worst BBQ I have ever had. Sorry for the slam guys, but I'm seriously NOT impressed. P. S. No sweet tea? Bah aha and you call this place southern....

  • Mike S.

Torn between two and three stars. Friendly staff and huge portions on the pulled pork sandwich were a big plus. A real wood smoker a bigger plus. But with that being said since they weren't open the day before they had no brisket or chicken on the menu. Being closed the day before is no excuse to not serve anything on the menu. If you are going to run a BBQ restaurant you need to get out of bed early enough to cook the meat. On the pulled pork, a really nice smoke ring and bark however there shouldn't be any flavor profile overpowering the dish and in this case something in their rub totally overpowered the entire sandwich. Not sure which spice or spices that did that but it took away from a very well smoked piece of pork. Probably won't be going back.

My partner and I fell in love with BBQ king in it's cart iteration and thought it had closed. We were thrilled to see it had moved into the big town hero on 18th and willamette. It seems like a few people had some negative experiences but our experience was every bit as good as the cart (which was phenomenal!). We both had the pulled pork, and it was just amazing, tender and perfectly seasoned and sauced. The baked beans were to die for. I've never had beans quite so delicious. They were perfectly spicy, perfectly cooked, and had just the right kick. The service was quick and friendly. My one complaint is that I would appreciate more Eco friendly wares and the place could stand to have a little more upkeep, but I still had a great experience and would strongly recommend it.

I cannot figure out why this place has such great reviews. I can only think those reviewing think of 'real' bbq as anything smothered in a sweet tomato 'bbq sauce'. That's the only flavor I could find. I really wanted to like this place. I have seen them smoking meats, but the meats were all very fatty, very dry and basically tasteless if you got the sauce off. Not the barest hint of smoke. This isn't bbq in my opinion. I went with a group and we had the chicken, rib tips and a brisket sandwich. My chicken was COLD in the center. The rib tips were so fatty there was hardly anything to eat on them that was not fat and the brisket was dry once you got past the sopping sauce that made it impossible to eat as a sandwich. It was a soggy mess. Seriously, there must have been a full cup of sauce. Ah well. I tried, but I won't be back. They should have stuck to the cart.

I have been to this place four times during the afternoon seeking the elusive brisket sandwich... Every time i have been in they are out.. Really? So everyone eats it all before 3.... Shouldn't they make more?? I given them multiple chances and have been let down each time.. It's not like they have an extensive menu.. Whatever their problem is. They just lost what could have been a very loyal customer.

If I could give it no stars I would. Just tried the new "restaurant" location. Food was barely edible. Drowned in spicy BBQ sauce that was not good. Pulled pork was all fat, no meat. Ribs were burnt and so dry barely could bite into them. We left after paying $30!! And had to go somewhere else to eat. Beware! Don't go!!

Just to point out.....Came back Saturday. The very next day after originally trying it. They open at noon, and I got there around 12:30. It seems the later in the day the more options they'll have readily available. At 12:30 all that was "ready" was a BBQ Chicken Sandwich. That was fine, but I wanted to try something different. None the less, it's still the best BBQ i've had for a long time. I think before I go down next time I'm gonna call to ask what's all ready. That might be the safer bet. I can't wait to try the ribs!

First of all the prices on yelp are currently wrong... $8.50 for the pulled pork sandwich now. It tastes and looks like a $5 pulled pork sandwich but they have been continually raising the prices and serving the same poor quality meats. Never going here again. If you want BBQ, call it in at Papa Soul Food and pick it up.

I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I really didn't like BBQ King. It says "Southern Style BBQ" on the building, but I'm not convinced they've been to the south let alone had good southern BBQ. I'm from Texas, and I've had a lot of BBQ at a lot of different places. First, the sauce - it was so heavy on brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg that it tasted like Christmas. It was really sweet but had some spicy element that didn't fit. Maybe it needed to simmer a bit longer so the flavors had time to really mix and mingle? I'm not sure, but it was more like a gravy than a sauce. Second, the ribs - my jaw muscles certainly got a workout trying to eat them. Those were some tough ribs! They needed at least another few hours in the smoker. The meat should be so tender that it falls off the bone...you shouldn't need an electric knife. Third, the sides - they didn't have potato salad! ((shakes head)) I ordered a side of onion rings but they were out. They were also out of french fries (and catfish). I would have liked to have seen fried okra on the menu also. The beans were ok, but the coleslaw looked store-bought (but I didn't actually try it). The portions were good but that's about the best thing I can say about our experience.

Who knew some of the best BBQ I'd eat would be in Eugene, OR? Certainly not I. Here at the BBQ King, folks can get their fill of delicious smoked and cooked meat with a little southern flair from none other than the BBQ king himself, owner Ken. I used to look forward Ken's inaugural appearance at the UO campus. For $5 one could score a nice pulled pork sandwich and for a little more at $9, a whole BBQ platter consisting of ribs, beans, cornbread, and coleslaw could be had. The prices have gone up understandably since then, but the food hasn't lost a beat. This place is still a dive, with little to no seating, inexpensive prices, and fantastic customer service. BBQ fans are sure to appreciate the quality of the meats and the method in which it's prepared. The giant grill / smoker, the dirty aprons, and the cloud of smokey BBQ aroma, is enough to make eyes water and stomachs growl. Like it's Portland neighbors, this place operates primarily as a food cart or mobile restaurant if you will. There isn't a better a better option in town, at least in terms of BBQ. The juiciness of the chicken meat, the tenderness of pulled pork, the fresh crunch of the coleslaw, the clean snap of the hot links, and the savory smoked flavor of the rib and rib tips are enough to bring me back each time I'm in town. Even though I selfishly want Ken to operate this cart 24 hours a day, I know he is but one man. BBQ King is not always available since he'll take on catering gigs from time to time and the weather doesn't always cooperate. Hence, thank goodness for Twitter ( twitter.com/BBQ_King ).

The owner has a great personality but the food was completely forgettable. Ken was great and joked with both of us: I didn't have the cash so I asked my girl and he gave me a hard time with "guys these days" while I went across the street to the ATM in Safeway. When I lead a review talking about someone's personality, you should be worried of what's coming: the hot links were dry as were the ribs, a mortal error. The kings cup didn't have much flavor going on either. This is a review from about 2 years back (pre-yelp for me) on a cold, wet Winter's day, so maybe they didn't have enough turnover, but - even so - serving dry barbecue should only bring shame.

Whoa, I didn't expect this. I'm not a huge BBQ fan but I sure enjoy it especially when I have a basket full of delicious, mouth-watering BBQ in front of me! Like I said above, I wasn't expecting much from this place - a tiny shack across the street from local Safeway - despite countless positive reviews from fellow Yelpers... Sorry! And boy was I wrong. My friend and I ordered rib tips and small king's plate(?) and the rich/smokey BBQ flavor alone was good enough to blow my mind away. Oh, did I mention? The amount of food is pretty big so come hungry! However, I have to point out few things. This place is cash only and sometimes food runs out. So make sure, esp on gamedays, to buy your food early! Or else they will run out on certain items - for me, ribs... but they had rib tips so it was ok - and you will be sad.

Ken is great. The pulled pork may be the best in town, just need to try again to be sure, The food cart is OK and the seating is kinda rough. Take it to go with a 6 pack from Safeway across the street and have great meal at home.

Ken is the man. I've been going here to eat bbq for a few years and I have no reason to stop. I haven't found a better bbq spot in Eugene. There is nothing on his menu that I would not give a 5 star rating to individually. My favorites are the bbq chicken sandwich and the king's cup. Pulled pork sandwich is great. The service is absolutely good. He usually offers some extra bread slices if you want, he has free cold water in a cooler out front while he prepares your food, he initiates friendly conversation, etc. Overall great food, great service, great prices. I'm going to go there now.

Mmmmm....mmmmm...brisket... *huge grin* Had a lousy day today, and one of my go-to comfort foods has always been brisket. Lately we've been going out to Junction City to get BBQ, but between the distance and the day, I just didn't want to drive that far. I am so glad! Such a nice, true-to-'Q piece o' meat. Yum!! (apparently we won't be heading to JC for Q again for a while!)

Establishment was so amazing I made a yelp account just to give the place a 5 star review. On a road trip to Portland from California, we stopped by Eugene and found this place across the street from a Safeway. The owner asked us if we were hungry and we answered yes. He suggested we order two of the large King's Cup which we did. We proceeded to get two overstuffed styrofoam boxes that could hardly close. The bottom was lined with dericious BBQ beans covered by strips of pork, beef, ribs and hot sausage links. The sausage links had a serious kick that worked up a healthy sweat but there was a water dispenser and cups within stretching distance filled with ice water. The ribs fell off the bone and the other items were flavorful. We were also given pieces of bread to scoop up whatever the forks failed to grab. The entire meal for all four of us was only $20 and we had enough leftover for a very filling dinner. The guy is also super nice and all the locals seemed to know him on a first name basis (Ken). Extra points for the owner playing less well known but still amazing Motown out of his boombox while we dined.

Had to stop here and compare to what we have at home, in South Carolina. The owner, Ken, is a super genuine guy. It was great to shoot the breeze with him about 'que and the different styles around the US. He used Cherry, which I've never used before, and Oak, which is big down here. I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce, but then again, I'm a mustard based sauce fan, which is the norm where I live. To be honest though, the ribs didn't really need much sauce, I liked the right amount of smokiness he has. When I pulled up, the smoke hit me, and made my stomach start growling. I said, "the smell tells me I'm in the right place" He laughed and agreed with me. I put down an entire rack myself, which I don't usually do at home, but I wanted to enjoy it to it's fullest. The sucky part, was that I got bbq sauce literally all over my pants and shirt. I was in transition of going to the airport, so all my clothes were packed up too. Anyway, I hope to be back in Eugene at some point in the future and I will def visit Mr. Ken and his ribs.

Been noticing this guy's stand across the street from Safeway on 18th, and finally stopped by for lunch today. Probably the best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had, plus it was five bucks. Super tender and smokey pork, with a good coleslaw and sauce with just the right amount of bite. It was early, so most of the menu wasn't available. Can't wait to stop back in for dinner once it gets warmer!

I came here yesterday with my roommate to get some bbq. Some friends of ours told us they had great bbq and we had to stop by. I ordered a beef bbq burger that was suppose to come with coleslaw. I decided to hold the coleslaw and eat it plane. Well the burger bun was probably a costco bun. The beef was good though, nice smokey flavor and an excellent sauce drizzled all over it. I took one bite and it left me feeling like Wimpy from Popeye. I was going to walk down the street and ask for money that I could pay by next Tuesday! Anyways I was pretty happy with the bbq beef burger. It isn't mind blowing, but it is good and it tastes great. For $6.00 I expect more beef though. It was much too easy to eat. That burger was more like $4.00 worth to me. I'll have to come back and try the ribs. I wish I had another burger with me now :(

Snap! That's the sound the hot link makes when you bite into it. Then you get the heat from the spicy link counterbalanced with a healthy dose of the cool, crunchy coleslaw. Damn, I wish I could find a place like this in the Bay Area. If there is, someone PLEASE tell me where! This five star rating is based on his Hot Link sandwich. It's so good, I don't care to try anything else. The king himself, Ken, is a good guy. I used to chat with him while waiting for my food. One time he was smoking up a whole salmon that wasn't for sale, but he gave me a free taste anyways....excellent, what can i say? The man is gifted...

Ken has been running this joint out of his red cart for as long as I can remember. He does bbq straight up nothing fancy, and he does it just like he says "good 'n good." At this spot it is all about meat and sauce and everything he makes is slathered in it. My top two choices are the pulled pork sandwich for like 5.50 or the basket of rib tips for 7 bucks. I lean towards the rib tips because the thing is ridiculous. I think it must be a whole pound of beef just floating in sauce. It's enough to put you in a serious food coma. Best bbq in Eugene hands down. Don't go there and expect anything but meat though because the choices are limited to what he's smoked that day. Damn it's good.

BBQ King operates from a cart directly across the street from Safeway. On a cold November day, it is especially fitting to be lured from grocery-land by the smoky meaty goodness that fills the asphalt parking lot. This is Texas BBQ. That means that beef is the favored animal--and a mightily flavored animal it is! Not to worry, though--the King supplies a proper tasty pulled-pork sandwich and hot links for those who favor our hero the pig. Ribs are thick and meaty, and the rib tips (the nearly burnt bits on the edge of the brisket) can be had by the pound. The barbecue chicken is good, but not quite as smoky as I'd like it. There are only two sides available (besides watermelon, which, though the menu features it, I've never actually had--it's supposed to come with every meal, but so far, I've had little luck. When asked, the King said, "the market hasn't had any good looking watermelons lately.")--baked beans and slaw. The slaw is crisp and refreshing and not too gooey or sweet. The beans are a far cry from the "Boston" baked beans that most often come in a can. These are black beans, cooked until tender but still firm, spiked with chunks of hot sausage and bathed in a spicy-sweet sauce. Worth trying--not quite up to level of Papa's, but if you're craving beef, BBQ King is your man.

I love BBQ King, and I can't wait for him to come back from hibernation. My favorite is the Hot Link sandwich (with slaw, of course). It's drippy with the slaw on it, and it's very spicy. So good my mouth is watering right now, and he will still be closed for winter for quite a while. Apparently you can still call him for catering, which might be what I'll have to do after a while.

  • Tom O.

Ken's has the opportunity to be a great place, and in my opinion, we live in a barbeque desert. I've been twice, and these are my impressions. In general the food is quite good. I've had pulled pork (very good) chicken (good) and ribs (fair). The sauce is excellent- the right blend of sweet and spice. Gripes- they have a TV going (why?) With the sound on (WHY?!?!?) And tuned to the worst in garbage TV (How could this possibly add to ambience or a good dining experience?) They have a piano and a couple of rat pack photos on the wall- why not be playing rat pack music or delta blues or something much.more appropriate? Also, both of my meals were served in a cardboard tray where the coleslaw, beans, meat and sauce were all.mixed together. Maybe this is an intended style of cuisine but I would gladly pay a dollar more for my meal to get it on a stoneware plate with the items in their own little piles. My first visit had a delightful man working behind the counter who was very helpful. Tonight's dinner was a young lady who didn't seem particularly interssted in what she was doing. The sides are much better than the local.competition. for example the cole slaw is in a different league entirely from that of Hole in the Wall. Baked beans are quite good too. My ribs were only fair because the bark was thicker than the tender meat inside. The chicken was tender and moist, but if it was smoked I couldn't detect any flavor.from the smoker. I would guess it was baked or done on an electric rotisserie. So to sum up- I'll probably give it one more try. The TV is a deal killer for me. I can live with silent TV's in sports bars but that's about it. A little.more thought to presentation and a little.more training of the help.and Ken's could become the best in Eugene!

Beware! Don't go!!

Fatty pork. No beef. The sauce is a vinegary tomato swill that drowns the sub par meat. If this place was in the south they would run him out of town. Stay away.

YUM.
