Friendliness and comfort food go a long way in a very small town like Condon. In the 4 days I visited, I visited the Round Up twice because, yes, it's one of the only places to eat, but it's also extremely welcoming and has a great vibe. It's also open late, and by late, I mean open past 7 pm. The waitress (Mary Ellen, I believe) is the nicest and sweetest lady on the planet, and she goes out of her way to make sure you're comfortable and have everything you need. This place is full of locals that know one another, so it has a nice friendly atmosphere. My friend is brand new in town, yet, everyone there recognized him and chatted with him. I had pizza both times I visited, and it is not only tasty but very generous! A small is 12-inches, and you can easily share with someone or take home leftovers. First pie I had was the Hawaiian Cowboy, which had REAL bacon bits, hefty ham chunks, and pineapple. Nice flavor, thick crust, and plenty of cheese. The second pie I had was the meat lover's, and again, very generous toppings and great flavor. Also enjoyed the spinach and artichoke dip (creamy and delicious) with toasted bread, and for dessert? THE MOST AMAZING PEANUT BUTTER PIE ON THE PLANET. Seriously, I had to stop myself from going back to get a slice to take with me on my way home to Seattle. It is sickeningly good. I will probably have dreams about it. Played some shuffleboard while sipping some Midori Sours and also enjoyed watching the Strongest Man on Earth competition on the big screen. Totally forgot about the pool table, so I will have to take advantage of that next time. I can't wait to come back next time I'm visiting my friend in Condon. I just hope they have that peanut butter pie again...

This is the only place to eat (besides the burger joint) and grab a cold beer or glass of wine. My husband and I had the pizza. It was good and the crust was crisp yet light. I believe they use a locally milled flour for the dough. Service was good as well.

Mason and Jason are always friendly, drink specials are tasty and the food is good. Service has never been slow and I love the small town family feel. Shuffleboard is a blast and watching the game on the big screen is a plus!

Let me start by saying the waitress was very nice... This is I believe my only one star review. The food was horrible and can't believe they would serve crap like that. Don't eat here!!! If you need food, go to the grocery store and get some bread and lunch meat; it closes like at 5 PM, FYI.

We got to Condon on a Sunday afternoon and this and the drive-thru was the only thing open (it's a really small town.) But the Round Up has chicken fried steak that the spouse was not willing to share (but I stole from his plate) and I had a South American spiced chicken with roasted veggies that was FANtastic!! Loved it. I ate the entire chicken breast it was that good and moist and flavorful. I had a big belly (TMI, I know.) For desert we asked for a red velvet cupcake to go and for them to split it evenly so as to prevent spouse from eating a larger "half" of it - it was yummy and moist, the icing fresh and it was split evenly ;-) I overheard the waitress telling another customer that the owner partnership is new and that they also own/work in conjunction with the bar next door. One of the partners is the baker and we bought a loaf of bread to take with us and ooooo- toasted w butter and jelly....my life is good. Stay at the Hotel Condon, eat dinner and dessert here and get you latte at the neighboring gift shop in the morning and go to John Day Fossil beds - what more do you need???

Passing thru town on a late Saturday night. I think it was the only place open to grab a bite. Our group of four were the only people in the dining room, not sure how many people were in the bar. We seated ourselves, but the wait staff was in the bar, took them about 10 mins to come over and take our drink order, about another 10 mins to get our drinks to us and order our food. About 10 mins after we ordered our server said they were running low on onion rings and ask if we wanted some mozzarella sticks with them. The apps came out and there were a ton of mozzarella sticks and 3 chicken strips. No onion rings. It took an hour to get the rest of our food. 4 burgers and fries, took one hour to prepare! Are you kidding me. I don't know about the others in my group but my burger was way over cooked and dry as a dog biscuit. The menu said their burgers were handmade patties too, but again another disappointment, it was a frozen patty. They were lucky we were all starving and nothing else was open. Otherwise we would have walked out. If there is somewhere else open do yourself a favor and go there. I wished we would have just went to Biggs and hit up Micky D's.

Condon has always been a restaurant bummer -- places often opened and closed at will, didn't necessarily keep posted hours, and there was no choice. So, it was good news last year when I heard that the closed Cowboy Up cafe (which didn't serve dinner) was going to re-open and serve dinner. Went there twice this last week; freezing cold outside, and it was a bit cold inside -- we ate both nights in the adjoining bar, which was warmer than the restaurant but on the 2nd night still cold enough for keeping your jacket on. Food and service were great. Steaks, burgers, prime rib (and blackjack!) Friday night and lots of other items. The roasted vegetables that come with the entrees are excellent, and I had the chicken fried steak one night and the prime rib the other. Very good food, but big -- bring an appetite. They cook their bread and hamburger buns, and they're great. Surprisingly good beer selection. Wait staff a bit overworked at dinner, but always in good cheer and keep you happy. Didn't try lunch or breakfast, but will next time. One of our group walked down the morning before we left and got a "giant maple bar" which was a bit of a disappointment, but I'd need to try some real breakfast fare before being able to rate that. I stay in Condon a few times each year for hunting or fishing and the Round Up Grill is a superb addition to the experience -- especially in contrast to microwave food in your hotel room. Let's hope they make it thru the slow periods and keep the cooks and wait staff happy so the ones there stay!
