Great prices on beer. I had the Reuben with onion rings. Fabulous service. Seems like a great local hang out .. Very friendly people. I will come back.

Best burger and fries in Astoria, and cheap too. Sweet people running the bar. Lots of characters when I go in there. I often sit by myself in the corner and write and no one bothers me. Their kitchen is open until ten or so.

Can't say much about the food, as we only grazed there. Went there for karaoke and had a great time. The KJ was great and the patrons were great also. My wife normally doesn't sing, but she felt comfortable enough to sing 5 songs there. Had a good experience there. They do have an older disk based system and not a lot of newer music, but they had enough.

Best burger in Astoria. Haven't tried anything else on the menu because the burgers are too damn good.

My wife and I walk into the Portway one foggy Astoria evening, looking for little more than a good burger and a little local color, and we are not disappointed. We choose a table in the far corner, under the collection of scribbled-upon orange lifesavers and netting, past the bar with a modest selection of beers on tap, past the older man sitting by himself nursing his beer and wearing his black cowboy hat like he means it, past the young couple holding hands at their table as '80's music pours out of the radio. The bartender seems to be the only one serving, and it's getting busier so he keeps on the move, checking in and moving on, with a joke and a smile. My beer comes quickly, the fried broccoli and cheese bites follow soon afterwards, and are a surprising, flavorful delight. We read the paper menus and discover, among other things, that the Portway has a history of shanghai'd patrons through a hole in the wooden floor - I look down and realize that I'm sitting on it, though it's now nothing more than a sealed outline on the floor. The laughter from the bar suddenly seems a little louder, a little more brash. Our food arrives and is just what we needed - my wife's mushroom burger and beer-battered onion rings are perfection, while my Reuben is very tasty. The fries are decent too, though I wish I had tried the Portway chips instead. And then, just as we are finishing up and settling up, the karaoke. Apparently, Saturday night is karaoke night at the Portway, and after the hostess belts out a Jo Dee Messina number, the loner in the black hat gets up to sing a song of love gone wrong with some real heart and more than a little talent. We can't help but clap when he's done, and he tips his hat in return before sitting down again. We stay for a few more songs and finally make our way back out into the rainy night, hunger satisfied and smiles on our faces. On top of some great food, the company and atmosphere of the Portway should not be missed. We'll surely be back for more.

The sign says open til 11pm, there's people inside but the bartender runs up to sign and shut down the place at 9:45!

Lots of karaoke talent in Astoria and you can tell they were regular locals straight away. Being the only Asian in the entire place that night, there was just a little bit of nervousness as I signed up for a couple songs myself. On a weekend night, it was packed to the gills with half the folks visibly wasted. Only one energetic bartender was running around servicing about 80 people. The food worked out okay but the karaoke is what makes the Portway a worthy visit for me. Kind of strange, about an hour into the session, they were already shutting down the karaoke. For that short burst of time, it was enjoyable to watch others sing as well as getting the opportunity to perform an 80s hit to a bunch of strangers who definitely was thinking "who the hell is this dude?".

The Halibut (fish and chips) is still some of the best fish that I have eaten. The fish is fresh and flaky and the batter is crisp and tasty; not oily or soggy. The fries are still average, but the onion rings are house made, crispy goodness. We arrived after the after work crowd had left but before the night life crowd came in. There were some loud folks that should have been home, already. The service was excellent. I agree with other reviews in that they only have one waitress that works the entire place. Although the service was great, you would think the owner would hire a second server to give the one server a bit of breathing room. Oh, and it is still a local bar. :)

We are regulars at Portway...well quasi-regulars compared to some of the ones that are in there almost every night I suppose. As a rule, we always have good to awesome service. Bria rocks!!!!! ALL of the servers impress the hell out of me, especially when they get crowded, as it is normally just one of them handling the whole place. Last night for example, there was one server running the show and she was flawless!!! Tables inside and out and they got invaded. Our service was top notch. I feel terrible for not getting her name (petite brunette, with permed curly air, cool ink work, and a perfect hard body). She was fast, unflappable, and on top of things. I don't think many could keep up with her at that pace. I gave the prime rib (one of my favourite meals) specials two tries now and the verdict is it is OK. I have had worse and much better. For the price, $16.95 (14oz cut, potato, garlic bread, and green salad) it is a fair meal. The garlic bread was quite odd. 3 very small, a bit bigger than a baguette in diameter pieces that were very dry and not that garlic flavoured, nor buttery. Kind of like croutons on steroids. Good for bruschetta, but not for garlic bread with a cut of beef. Prime Rib was a bit tough and had modest flavour. I dare say that Mary Todd's has them beat in my humble opinion. Mary's is 3 bucks more, but it is a much larger cut and was more flavourful to me. Not the end of the world though, as Portway has a boatload more of great food (no pun intended). Portway has Mary's beat on selection and quality of all of the other menu offerings. Portway's clam strips and chips rock!!! Very meaty, and fresh. Their salads are made with fresh greens (read: no iceberg here) and have the greatest dressings. Their thousand island dressing is some of the best that I have ever tasted. Amazing burgers, chips and salsa (real chips, not from a bag), and chowder puts others to shame. Cheap beer doesn't hurt at all either (wink). We still love ya Portway!!!

I got sucked into this place because it looked great from the outside. Rustic maritime scury look. I yelped it, seemed like a good place for grog and food. I tried to walk from my hotel, it seemed like a good idea. Then the downpour began. I had to hightail back to my car. Once inside I was impressed with the bar. Lotsa eyecandy. Cool old nautical stuchff. The only prob was when i saddled up to the bar and was promptly ignored. After 5 min I got an Alaskan Amber, given a menu and promptly ignored again. I guess I should have ordered a bud or sumpin.

I ran away to the coast for a few days to work on my NaNoWriMo project but in the midst of writing so many words, I decided that I wanted to head out and have a beer with the locals. My good friend, google, pointed me in the direction of the Portway because 1) it was close by and 2) it had karaoke. The bar itself was quiet and only had less than ten people in it. I saddled up to the bar and ordered a beer and worked on the crossword while the regulars sang country songs. Within five minutes of being there, I felt someone behind me giving me a neck massage. I turned around slowly and there was a drunken fellow standing there. I expected him to say something like "oh my gosh, I'm sorry, I thought that you were someone else..." but he didn't. Instead, he sat down next to me and tried to woo me with the pick up line "are you one of those stuck up bitches?". I said "I don't think so..." and then he immediately got up to sing. I asked the bartender (a very sweet woman who took care of me all night) if he was harmless or if I should be concerned. Her response? "Come sit with me down the end of the bar". Dude finished singing and came over and sat next to me again and this time tried a different approach. He said "so, you wanna make out later?". I calmly said "no, thank you," and he was SHOCKED! With his tail between his legs, he went to talk to someone else and I repeated his suave moves to the bartender. She, thankfully, cut him off and he decided to leave. Of course, within minutes everyone knew the story and each and every person in that bar then asked me if I wanted to make out with them. They were all hysterical and supportive of my choice of pop songs amongst the country karaoke that was happening. I wish that I was there on a busy night to meet the rest of the regulars but the ones I met were amazing and if I was staying here longer, I would be back. Go to the Portway and have fun and chat with the regulars and you'll be in for a treat!
