I can't believe I haven't reviewed here yet. This is my favorite place to go in Albany. I don't drink coffee anymore but with his iced champurrado I make an exception. It's amazing. I seriously crave it everyday but that is to expensive of a habit. My son loves the iced chocolate drink that has cookies pureed in it. I can't remember the name of it. The service is the best and the two gentlemen that work there are so very friendly. One even remembered me when I came in and asked how the coffee compost did in my garden. They give it away for free out front. They have punch cards which is awesome cause I am one away from a free drink. The store is beautiful. I just wish they were open on Sunday. Go outside the normal American staple of overly sweet drinks like Starbucks or D.B. You won't regret it.

Go here. Now. Why in the world are you drinking that terrible Starbucks "coffee?" Universal Coffee is what a coffee shop should be. It's locally family owned. It's cozy. The coffee is fantastic. The prices are reasonable. Stop supporting the mega-coffee joints, drive a couple of blocks off the main drag, and find out what coffee should taste like.

A coffee shop with a lot of personality thanks to Guatemalan style coffee drinks like the champurrado and pastries like the pan dulce. The owner Alex was so personable we felt like long lost friends. He played a song for us on his guitar and gave us samples of the coffee drinks we weren't familiar with. My favorite was the Cafe Olla which was espresso, hot water, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

A step above the average coffee joint, because the owner is a true expert in the world of coffee. He can answer any question about where the coffee beans are from and how they are roasted. They offer both standard espresso drinks and Latin American varieties like Champurrado. If I lived in Albany I'd come a lot more often, and try all the drinks available.

Asked for a hazelnut mocha, young guy argued with me, saying that it would be way too sweet, so I'll make it a latte, and when I told him no he still proceeded to argue with me! I let him give me a latte, because he kept insisting it would be better. He took 10 minutes to make a lukewarm, odd flavored latte, meanwhile some man (I presume the owner) was arguing very angrily over the phone, will NEVER return!

This place is great! Organic coffee in a relaxing atmosphere. I was at Starbucks and it was a mad house so I looked Universal Coffee up and got out of there. Found this place and I couldn't be happier. In my opinion the coffee is way better. Great owners too!

I stopped in here today after seeing a flyer for it a few days ago. The coffee was fantastic! I ordered a mocha and my daughter ordered a Mexican hot chocolate. They were both delicious. The Mexican chocolate and spices give the drinks a great flavor. We also tried a sample of "champurrado" which is a delicious, thick hot drink from Mexico. Highly recommended. If you aren't looking for the "Latin" favors, the shop also offers classic espresso, cappuccinos and lattes as well as pastries (which we also tried - they were fresh and tasty). Alex, the owner, told me a bit about the coffee shop, and his knowledge of growing and making coffee (he used to grow it in Costa Rica) is impressive. Check it out!

This is the absolute best coffee house in the world. The owner is a professor from Costa Rica and an owner of a coffee plantation. Alex, the owner, understands coffee and uses natural ingredients and applies Love and attention to detail with each freshly brewed cup. It is an unhurried laid back environment with a Latin ambience and music, an artistic décor, sometimes you will hear the owner or visiting musicians playing the Spanish guitar as well as a variety of instruments. Spanish guitar lessons are given once a week right there on the property. The environment is conducive to study, laptops and smart phone use. The Latin music is very upbeat and one walks away happy and recharged ready to greet another day. I have tried many different drinks both hot and cold and have walked away renewed and educated in the understanding of a plethora of coffees worldwide. This adds another positive dimension to the great City of Albany like a large tree with all its character, large, providing shade and rest for the myriad of birds that come to nest in its branches. This is a must see and a wonderful place to bring guests from out of town when they come to visit and peruse the city.

Full disclosure: I'm a friend of the owner, so I'm not completely neutral. Having said that, they do make a heck of a cappucino. Clean modern decor, bright colors, photo/art gallery expected soon for walls, soft salsa or other Latin music is default background music. They have started featuring live entertainment as well. They will soon be featuring Mexican, South American, and Central American coffee concoctions that you can't get anywhere else (if they are not already,) plus a selection of exclusively gluten free pastries. If you'd rather have your wheat based pastries, they don't mind if you buy 'em at the conventional bakery a couple doors down (or anywhere else for that matter) and enjoy them with one of their beverages. Your drink takes a while, as each beverage is hand made according to very strict procedure. Owner Alex Contreras explains, "you just can't rush good champurrado." Open early, close at 5:00 pm. [Edit: just dropped in again yesterday and now their sign indicates they are open until 8:00!!!]
