After 30+ years of great food, service and fair prices, I've been disappointed on all 3 tonight. I really hope the lack of server attention, prices, food quality and portion size gets some management attention as the lack of a waiting line tells me I'm not off base in my assessment.

Overall, The Depot was pretty darn sub-par. The batter on the fish was not a classic beer-batter that makes for a good fish and chips. The clam chowder had decent-sized clams in it, but was fairly flavorless. I'm still trying to understand the shrimp salad that comes with the meals--it looks like they dump a can of baby shrimp on top of a mishmash of bagged lettuce. Honestly, it's a bit overpriced for what I imagine is frozen, farmed fish that lacks real flavor. And the cocktail sauce? I've never seen cocktail sauce that looks like ketchup with relish mixed in. Where is the horseradish?! The one good thing--very interesting decor.

Fish and chips not as good as I remember from my last visit 25 years ago but what is? Same cool retro decor. 2 piece portion of fish is expensive and inadequate. Fries were really tasty though.

Who would have thunk it? Albany has some of the best fish and chips ever! I come here every now and then for lunch and it's solid every time. You only need to order one thing: fish & salad. The fish has a great batter on it and they fry it perfectly. Still light and crispy, not heavy and oily. Good value and friendly staff. Highly recommend.

Finally made it to the Depot. The parking lot is a little tricky FYI lol. First impression is that this is a little cozy restaurant. Friendly service, great atmosphere, and the food was good. We ordered an app, the salmon smoothie. It was pretty good, if you like smoked salmon I would give this a try it was matched with crackers. Then we had some clam chowder, they bring it out with some cheese which was a nice added touch. The chowder wasn't the best I've had but it was okay. Nothing special :). Our final dishes came out, I had shrimp, and my man had the fish. First off everything was good, the fries are classic cut fried in grease fries lol. The salad was pretty tasty, everything had a home made feel. Cut carrots, celery, cocktail shrimp in your salad, and finally my deep friend shrimp! Which when it comes to deep fried anything is good hahah. His fish was kinda bland, it was fried but I wouldn't call these the best fish and chips around.. Overall it was good, a little over priced for what you actually get.

HHMMMMMM........Something has changed here. I took an account here for lunch yesterday and things seemed a little different. The beverage glasses were the first tip off as they have shrunk. The half bowl of chowder has shrunk but the cheese and crackers are the same. The fish appears, as I recall, gone from three to two pieces. The bay shrimp on the salad has become less. They don't offer a lot of the same dishes at lunch like they used to but offer a different one. The service is still first rate, which is good to see. I still like the Depot and their food is good, but they did drop a star. I hope they don't change much more.

Cozy little restaurant that makes you feel like you're at the coast the moment you walk in. The food is great - home style cut fries, green salad, and a fried sea creature of your choosing. (I always get the shrimp, as I'm not a big into fin fish.) They also have tasty chowder and the best lemonade ever. Service has always been very friendly and responsive for me. And make sure to check out the resident puffer fish who lives in the large aquarium near the back of the restaurant.

It's alright. Service is never really that great when I've been in there. Nice setting, quaint. Love their crackers and cheese platter :)

Disapponting. Overpriced for what you get and service was poor that night. We put this on the "been there done that list". No need to go back

After hearing about The Depot Restaurant from a couple co-works and reading the reviews, I decided to give it a shot. My boyfriend, our daughter, and I piled into the car and drove over around 5pm. Our initial impression was "Oh, man, maybe we shouldn't have taken the kid - it looks like a dive bar!" Once inside though, it was very "coasty" feeling. Ship and sea memorabilia, a fish tank, the scent of tartar sauce and clam chowder. The smallish booths were just enough to seat myself and BF on one side, and coats, purses, and the kid on the other. It was clean and warm though (snow and sleet falling outside), with lots of interesting things to look at. There was no wait, and we were able to seat ourselves where we liked. Our friendly waitress was over immediately to take our drink orders; soda, water, and the ever present coffee order for the BF. After the initial shock of menu prices, we placed our orders. The Havarti fried cheese was alright, the dipping sauce helping to add some flavor. The clam chowder was also just alright, I've had better, and worse. Our main dishes came without too much of a lag after finishing the starters. The Medium Fish and Chips ($17.50 each?!) my BF and I ordered was fried in more of a Shake'n'Bake style coating rather than a traditional beer batter, which was fine. In my opinion, it lacked a bit of flavor that may have been helped by adding the malt vinegar, however I only used lemon. The fries were thick homestyle cut, and needed a dash of salt as none had been put on. Small salads filled out the rest of the plate. Our daughter decided on the Calamari appetizer for her main course, and her only statement was "It's chewy!" I don't eat calamari often, and did not feel like sampling it, so I can't comment. I'd say this is a fair place to get a decent lunch, but not for the price. When two fish'n'chips, and 3 appetizers (counting the calamari the kid had for her dinner) costs just over $60 . . . we would have gone elsewhere. It is doubtful we will ever return, based more on the prices than the food or service, which were both adequate.

My wife and I went to the Depot Restaurant in Albany, OR. We split a large order of fish and chips and an order of fried cheese. The time it took to get our food was very quick. The food was very good. The service was actually pretty good. The problem came when we got our change. The change from the ticket was $11.75. The waitress gave us two fives, a one, and a quarter. As she passed by again, I asked for change for one of the fives. She was carrying some plates, took the five, and proceeded behind the counter. A young lady in the kitchen asked her a question and she handed the plates to the young lady and said, "Here, I have to get some change for these people who don't want to leave a big tip." She came back by and dropped the bills on the table and walked of without saying a thing. Well, guess what, regardless of what I was going to leave, I left 25 cents. Having worked many years in food service and hospitality, and waiting tables for a period of time, I know what working for tips is all about and I reward good service. I don't, however, reward poor attitudes. Thanks miss, we will not be seeing you anytime soon, if ever.

If you want to take your tastebuds on a trip to Dullsville you gotta hit the Depot first! I don't know what attracted me to this place, it looks like a dive bar/crumpled shack. But I turned around and parked in their lot. I had some reservations but saw a brisk lunch crowd inside and decided to give it a go. The inside was really cool. Very neat decor which will occupy your eyes while you wait for your grub. Service was well above par and swift. So far The Depot had exceeded all of my expectations. I ordered Fish and Chips ($8.50) and a soda ($2.00). When the fish and chips were brought I was highly disappointed. Two medium fish filets, fried, and a whole plateful of fries (Maybe call this one "Fries and Fish?" See Charlie T.'s review). I was offered Malt Vinegar for the fries which I promptly accepted. I was sorely disappointed in the food. The fries were small and short, about half a pinkie length. Completely unseasoned (salt, pepper, and ketchup were on the table). The fish, while plump and moist, lacked all flavor. The breading was crisp but had no POP! Bland. The lemon on the table couldn't even save the fish. Praise God for the tartar sauce, sure it makes me want to puke but I can at least taste THAT! ("Taste what?" you ask "the tartar sauce or the puke?" Well, in either case it's something!) If I had to pick five adjectives on the food they'd be: Moist, Plump, Delicate, White, and OMGITSALLFRIESANDNOFISHALLFRIESANDNOFISH!. See, not a single word there describing flavor because there wasn't any. I don't think I've ever had such bland unremarkable food ever. At least at Denny's they have the foresight to spit in your food to give it a little kick. The most common phrase I heard at The Depot? "Please pass the salt...and pepper...and maybe I'll see if I have any belly button lint..." (Random, unrelated observation. I ALWAYS have belly button lint. Always. Even when I wear a tee-shirt. Don't ask me how. In fact, let me check right now, brb...yep, not even wearing a sweater but there it is. Though I doubt this small piece of cotton could have saved my plate. Now where was I?) I'm surprised to read all the good reviews here and surprised at the lunch business. If you're a shrimp, scallops, and fish and chips place you have to have something that really grabs my attention. Nothing here did. A pity considering the good service and playful decor. Maybe I got an off plate or something. Maybe others here have had really tasty, flavorful grub. I didn't and won't be back a second time. Ho-Hum.

I went to college at OSU and was introduced to this place. It was great then...and its great now. The portions are large. The fry is clean and not greasy. Anything you order there ends up tasting great. The shrimp salad is gargantuan.

Love atmosphere! Food so so. If the food was as good as the atmosphere Is be back, but its not. Had combo..very average. Behest of it all was the fresh cute fries.

This is a cool, local spot. I love the shrimp salad. The small is huge. It's also a great place for a warm bowl of chowder on a rainy day. They have several healthy options as well as fried food.

Lunch today, fish and chips. Fish was fresh but this is really 3/4 chips and two small pieces of fish. The shrimp and chips photo says it all.

I love fish and chips. My husband asked me the other day, "Why do you go to skippers and not that place?" - meaning the Depot. So, today, I went. What I had: Scallops and chips for 7.95. What I got: about 6 scallops, nicely fried but a little juicy - when i bit them, scalding water came out. The fries were good, though some were a touch under done. I liked them though. Overall, 4 stars. It was definitely better than skippers for approximately the same price. The service was nice, the decor was fun. I absolutely love scallops so having another good place to get them in town is a big plus. (The other being House of Noodle - garlic scallops).

Stumbled onto the Depot on the way to Corvallfi, and being famished we decided to take a chance. Glad we did! Funky decor, very and quick service, and very good food made it a winner. Yes its a bit expensive, but where isn't good fish and chips? Helping offset the price is the great idea of making it available in 3 sizes (small =2, medium = 4, large = 6). Plus, it comes with an excellent shrimp salad. We ordered two medium fish and a medium combo and left very full--and with enough left over for our teen son to have breakfast. Also enjoyed the selection of beers. As others have said, the batter is not the heavier English style beer batter, which I prefer, but that's a personal preference. I still thoroughly enjoyed it, and the fish was excellent (and I'm not a fish lover). The shrimp and scallops were also excellent, but my wife found the oysters to be quite fishy (but my son loved them, and he's more of an oyster fan). The chips were soggier than I prefer, but again that's a personal preference (and another reviewer says you can ask for them to be cooked crispier)--and they were definitely fresh. We're from Denver so probably won't be back (unless the son decides to attend OSU)--but I'd certainly recommend the oddly-named Depot to others.

In the mid-80s I worked in Albany and I was able to go to The Depot often. Back then I really enjoyed it. Sadly, a change of jobs led me elsewhere and I wasn't able to get to The Depot very often. A few months ago I got a job in Albany again so that meant more chances to get to The Depot. Unfortunately, when I went back I was seriously disappointed. The fish was nearly identical to how I remembered it and that was good. The fries were also. I forgot to ask for them to be a little crisper but that was my fault. Where this place really let me down was in the presentation. The fish came on a piece of lettuce in a puddle of liquid. Within a couple of minutes the fish and fries were soaking wet and inedible. Had the staff showed the slightest interest in customer satisfaction ie., asked me how it was, I would have voiced my opinion but that did not happen. I would have given one star but in the few seconds that the fish was edible it did prove to be very good. In fact, it was just how I like it so a bonus for that. At this point in time I am undecided if I will return. Skippers has re-opened and is, in my opinion, better so it does not seem likely right now and that is unfortunate. I really wanted to like The Depot again. Oh well.

Too expensive. That being said, I'm in love with their shrimp/carrot salad. Can't. Get. Enough. And the rest of the food is good as well. Just really expensive... for fried fish & chips. So, we won't go as often as I'd like... but we'll still go.

Not good! Rubbery fish, soggy fry job, uneven cook job on the fries. The sign claims they have salads, and technically that is true...but nothing healthy. I am just happy I didn't get sick.

Havarti cheese is the best place to start. Mom loves the Bonnie Shrimp crunch salad. Dad loves the Combo and sis loves the freshness and friendliness. And I just love the cozy atmosphere and deliciousness.

This is THE place to go when you have a hankering for fried seafood in Albany, and probably even Corvallis. Its not the typical fish fry place, since they use a cornmeal coating instead of a batter, which makes the fish more along the lines of Southern style than English. They've got fish and shell fish, all deep fried of course, and their fresh cole slaw is a pretty good accompaniment as well. I dont make it over to the Depot as much as I probably should but that shall soon change.

The depot is a great place! It's small, so sometimes you have to wait a bit at the bar. The biggest table seats 6 i think. They have the best deep fried havarti cheese sticks in the whole world i'm pretty sure. almost everything there is deep fried-except for the salads :) their house dressing is a creamy french that is so delicious. the bonnie's crunch salad is made of carrots, mayo, sunflower seeds, and shrimp and is one of the best things i have ever eaten! i have been going to the depot for at least 20 years and have tried everything on the menu and it's all good!

We had the Havarti Cheese and the Seafood Combo to share. Quite possible one of the worst meals I've ever had. Do not have the fried oysters. My husband is a human disposal and will eat anything and he could not eat these. He complained for hours afterwards about how it was the worst thing he has ever had and how it just sat in his stomach making him feel not good (and he really does eat anything and never complains about food). When we tried to tell the waitress she just said "that's how they are this time of year". I just had fried oysters a week ago elsewhere and trust me, these oysters were not do to the "time of year". The fish had no flavor and breading was bland as well. The shrimp and and scallops were very sub-part. Shimp and scallops were also exceptionally small and over-breaded and the breading was mushy and not crisp. The Havarti cheese was probably the best thing and it was aslo sub-par. They found a way to mess up good cheese with a bland, stale tasting breading. (and not fully cooked so not melty). And yes, as the other reviews mentioned, this place is way overprice for sub-par (bottom of the barrel) seafood. Worst money every spent out at a restaurant probably. That's saying a lot. Do yourself a favor and skip the Depot.

I was turned onto this place a few weeks ago when my friend brought me there for lunch. Now we go there once a week. Yes, everything is fried but I love the fish seeming like it isn't battered. Perfectly lightly fried and seems fresh. The best homemade french fries ever. Maybe next I'll try the scallops but will definitely be going back once a week.

I live out of town and anytime I am in Albany, I always make a trip to the Depot. I am hooked on the Bonnie's Shrimp Crunch salad. It seems to grow as I eat, it's so large. The mixture of shredded carrots and shrimp with the crunchy Asian noodles on top is perfect. Homemade french fries and the fish, while fried, is always good too. I'm going there tomorrow and can't wait!

Went here last night. Server was completely rude and condescending. Anytime we asked her a question, her answer was in a very fake, rude tone. The food is okay but doesn't seem worth it for the price or the horrible service!

  • Nick G.

Food was to be expected. A lot of deep fried everything. Service was excellent, but pricing is through the roof for what it was. I felt like I was at the coast at a tourist trap. 3 stars for price 4 for service and maybe 3 for food quality.

We use to go to The Depot fairly often, but have been away for a bit. The Wife and I went in and the usual fish and chips, the fish wasn't as good as I remembered and a little smaller size. But it was still good, the price was up, but was isn't. Will be back

This place used to be great. At this point the only thing I can recommend is their shrimp salad. Pretty much just over priced and you would be better off going to Corvallis for McGraths... I hate to say it but don't even bother anymore.

  • Todd B.

Love the food and service here. Used to go here a lot, but now days you don't get anything for your money. You get better deals at McGrath's, worth the drive to get what you pay for.

I've only been once but my clam chowder was amazing! My husband got an assortment of fried fish and clams and it was a bit greasy for me when I tasted it. I only get clam chowder when I crave seafood so I'd definitely go back for theirs!

My wife and I came here for a lunch date one day. And the decor of the place was very fun! The Service was great! Quick, friendly and helpful. The food was fresh and served Hot! It really was all around good service and we plan on coming back. And would recommend to all my friends and family. :)

This is my go to place when I need to have a casual meeting for sure!! I love the food, and there is something for everyone! The wine is wonderful compliment. The decorations are intriguing ;) Staff is so loyal! Can't wait to go back!!!!

Did not try the food but it did look good. Clean but eclectic as the owner is a fan of model planes and boats. Staff was very nice and OK with us just having a beer. Nice variety of local brews and great atmosphere.
