Horrible experience. Our party had reservations at 7 and we weren't seated until 7:35. It then took another 15 minutes for our drink orders in. Our chef did not show up until around 8:30. He was severely inappropriate with his comments and made innuendos the whole time. This experience turned phallic which is not what I ask for when I go to dinner. I do not plan on returning and do not recommend it to anyone in the Norman area.

I didn't have a great experience at Yamato, but it certainly was a good one. Way better than what the majority of other yelpers experienced, based on the reviews. Myself and two buddies at a Yamato on a Friday night. I was expecting a wait, but one of the guys called in early. So, we had to sit at the bar for a bit, but only about 10 minutes. The bar is small, maybe 6 seats. It's kind of an afterthought in the restaurant, tucked away in a corner near the restrooms. But, it has stools and a guy that pours your beer, so it gets the job done as a bar. Yamato has the usual selection of Japanese beers (Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo), plus some standard domestic fare. They have a short sake menu and some specialty cocktails, including a sake martini that I would not recommend. We were seated at the teppenyaki table with a couple, so only 5 of us total. This allowed us to stretch out, which was nice. Every other time I've dined in a setting like this, the table has been full. Our server came over quickly to take drink orders, but after that it took awhile for her to return to take our dinner orders. This was the only issue, she was very attentive the rest of the evening. I went with the Yamato Special: lobster and filet with all the extras you typically get a place like this. We had the requisite broth with floating mushrooms and fried onions, followed by a simple ginger salad. These were fine. Our chef arrived next, and he was friendly. He immediately started with the fried rice, followed by the shrimp. The shrimp was better than I was expecting, it wasn't overcooked, and was nice and juicy. Also, we got a lot of it. I don't know if the kitchen accidentally gave him too much food, but I would estimate each of us received a dozen (at least) shrimp. Likewise, the lobster was cooked well, certainly not overcooked. The filet was not as strong, it was overcooked beyond medium rare, and did not appear to be the best quality. This was the worst part of the meal for me. A problem with this meal was the pacing. Usually at places like this, you are given time to finish each course, or come somewhat close, before you are given the next course. This guy was shoveling food at us like he was double parked. So, we didn't really have time to enjoy anything, as it was coming at us so fast and our plates ended up piled with food. My buddies I ate with said this was atypical for Yamato, which is good, because it was very annoying. Our server was great, she let us sit for awhile after the chef left to finish our meal. She was also very prompt delivering refills. Overall, this was a good dinner, and I'd return. But, don't expect to be blown away by Yamato.

After waiting five minutes at the host stand to be seated, we were then told it would be a fifteen minute wait. Did I mention the restaurant was only 1/4 full? Yeah, we walked out. If the initial customer service is this bad, I am very glad we did not stay for a inevitably disappointing meal.

My fave spot, need chef Smoky, I'm curious to see if he can outcook Wesley or Winston; at least he's pretty cool. Just dug in and he seasons the food perfectly. Only reason the star was deducted is because of wait time and the drinks from the bar being tasteless!!!

Quick review: SLOW. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Go somewhere else if you want Benihana-style dining (Sake, off Main Street for starters). My experience: we had reservations for 6 people. They have a paper sign taped to the hostess stand which indicates that they will not seat you unless your whole party is present. We wait for our whole party about 10 minutes. Although a few tables have six or fewer people seated, they delay our seating to add two chairs, adding a couple to our table. We're sat at the same time as a table of two families across from us. We order our drinks. We get our sushi roll and soup and salad course. This is where it all falls apart. We watch the table seated across from us get served. We watched them eat their whole meal. We watch them get dessert. We watch them get the food boxed up. We watch them leave. We also see another table of four get sat. They eat. They have coffee. They pay their tab. No one came by. Our drink person came by for the first time in about 40 minutes to tell us that the chef for us is still at another table and will be along shortly. The couple out on their date, who've grown irritated, indicated that they have somewhere to be, and would like to get their bill for drinks. After some discussion, we decide that we, too, are going to cancel. Here's where the restaurant really dropped the ball. I indicated that we would like to cancel our order, that we've been there for more than an hour (1 hr 15 min by this time) and haven't seen anyone over to even cook our food. The hostess goes to get the bill. When presented with the $35 bill for a few drinks (including charges for our sodas), I tell her that a better customer service experience would be to comp this fiasco completely and offer me a token gift card to get me back in the door again. Or, she can choose to have me pay this $35 bill, which I will, but I will then promptly tell everyone I know NEVER to eat at this restaurant (since I'm posting this on Facebook, I think y'all can guess how this one goes.) The hostess indicates that she can't handle this discussion, and gets our server. Throughout this entire 12-minute "negotiation," the alleged "manager" never comes out to handle this. The server comes back and explains that I will have to pay the bill, which is now $39. She forgot to charge for one of the iced teas. I smile, give her my credit card, and cut off her apology to say that I didn't blame her at all and that she did the best she could. She brings me back a bill to sign in the amount of $30 (?). I tip her $5, and swear that I will never set foot in this place again. I HIGHLY recommend that you never do either.

the asian chef had great knife and juggling skills. noticed some of the other chefs from the other tables weren't very entertaining..so the customers looked bored and were looking at our table. yes, there is quite a wait. it is a good thing we made reservations. the regular tables had many spots. i don't see any reason having to reserve for that side. but def. make reservation and don't dress too warm if you want to eat in the area where they cook in front of you. that side is packed... we had a good meal and a good time. also, if you have young kids/toddlers who have never experienced this.....have them sit a little to the side so they won't be scared by the fire/heat.

Hmmm what happened to your fried rice? Guess I have to make the trek to north OKC for good Japanese now? :(

Horrible experience. We went with our 2 year old and 5 year old. Our kids were exceptional considering the 2hour wait for our food! We were there for my wife's birthday and were having a good night. We sat down with another group and even had a separate group sat close by at the same time. A chef cooked for the group at the other grill and they were completely served before our chef showed up. It wasn't busy when we got there but by the time we had food it was two hours later... 8pm! Not very late but we drove an hour to get there and had other plans. We had to have the food put directly into our to go box and get out of there. Two hours should be plenty of time to serve a family of four I don't care what the circumstances are.

Good food, great entertainment, but slow and expensive. As a note, I have only had the hibachi grill stuff, as I am not a fan of sushi. It seems, after reading other reviews, that this is the way to go. The sushi reviews on this place (so far) have just trashed it. I can say, though, that for the hibachi side, the food is good, and the show & service are great (though the service is slow, and there's quite a wait). As a note, like with any hibachi experience, you should never go with a group of less than 4 or 5 people because you'll likely end up sharing a show table with some random people you'd rather not dine with. Likes: I've enjoyed the flavorful food every time that I've been there. The meats are delicious, and the service is very friendly. The showmanship that the chefs display is funny and quite entertaining - moreso than what I've experienced at Musashi's in OKC. Dislikes: It's not cheap - you'll probably pay about $20-30 per adult there, and you will probably be there a couples hours. If you're stuck dining with people you do not know, that can be a VERY long time. This place could really go either way, depending on how its management operates it, but for now, it's a good entertainment value with delicious meats.

The first time I ate at Yamato, I wasn't impressed but my grandparents seemed to enjoy it so we returned for my uncle's birthday. This time, my earlier opinion was accepted by everyone since the service was atrociously poor and the sushi was so barely average. Though we had reservations, the hostess seemed entirely unprepared for us and showed us to two tables which she muttered we could push together ourselves to fit our party. What? Should I take our drink order next and then make the sushi myself? It took a very long time for anyone to take our order and an even longer time for the food to finally reach us. When it did, it didn't arrive all at once. It came out in fits and starts so by the time one person in our group had finished their order, another person was just starting to begin eating. In addition to having to ask about the status of our sushi order more than once, when it did arrive, we had to ask for wasabi dishes and never were served individual small plates. And the chefs really skimped on the avocado in my avocado rolls- more of a hint of avocado than an actual chunk. The interior of the restaurant is attractive (especially like the birds in flight painted on the high ceiling) but it seems like their focus in on the teppanyaki side of the operation. There are so many other sushi options in Norman now, there's no reason to subject yourself to shoddy service and mediocre food.

Absolutely the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. Our party waited over an hour AFTER the restaurant was closed to be served. Then, we were told there was no manager in the building and we couldn't be compensated in any way for our three hour wait. The mediocre food was not at all worth the wait.

It was just mediocre. We had reservations and were seated pretty quickly, but had to wait about 45 minutes for our chef. He seemed to be fairly well skilled in his art, but didn't seem too interested in being more entertaining. Our server, while nice, lacked personality and was even working while wearing a ball cap turned backwards, which seems a little unprofessional. The food was simply ok; not much in the way of flavor outside of soy sauce. We all ordered the dinner combination, which includes salad, soup, entree, and sherbet. I know it seems trivial, but when they brought out the "sherbet", it was plain vanilla ice cream in one of those miniature, prepackaged cups. You would think there would be more effort in the presentation. On a positive note, our 10 year old special needs child wasn't eating, but they were nice enough to bring her out some ice cream free of charge with everyone else's. However, we were there for my wife's birthday, and while their menu even states that a special photo would be included on these occasions, they never even made any effort to do so, even when it was mentioned more than once. I believe all of their issues could be remedied by installing a proper manager.

Not a great place for sushi. I could say that it's the worst sushi restaurant I've ever eaten at. I had my suspicions when I sat at the sushi bar. It just didn't taste and look right.

Waitress and chef had great customer service. Food was delicious. My problem was with the host staff. I came up to the counter as a walkin. The emo Asian kid told me it was a 2 hour wait, even though there were several empty tables. My wife really wanted it, so I told him that I was going to wait. As I started to sit, he then told me that I had 5 minutes wait instead.

This is a sad excuse for a sushi restaurant. They should just keep it a habichi (spelling?) place instead of trying to attempt to be a sushi place. They didn't have any toro, which should have been the first indicator that this place was gonna suck. I asked if they had peppered tuna, which wasnt on the menu. They said yes. What they brought out was tuna that has table black pepper sprinkled on it. Are you kidding me? I asked to see if they had spicy ponzu sauce ( i like to dip my sushi in it) and the waitress looked at me like i was crazy and said she didnt know what that was. I had ordered the california burning roll, the rodeo roll, the "peppered tuna" and the red snapper. Was not impressed by ANY of it. I also ordered a Madame something drink, which tasted like a virgin strawberry smootie. The only part of my lunch there that was exciting was when the chef came out to make my sons' lunch (chicken teriyaki). He did an okay job (he dropped his utensils numerous times trying to do tricks with them). My kids food was yummy, but for being a kid's meal, it was huge!!! They (my two sons) has split the meal, and it was still too much, I had to ask for a doggy bag. I don't plan on going back, but if I ever did, I will know NOT to order their sorry a&s sushi.
