Visited here thinking its a Mexican place but the menu rocked me with full set of Peruvian menu. Awesome. I never tried Peruvian food. Ordered bunch of items and everything turned out to be delicious. The owner or the manger checked with us several times. Also our waiter was helpful.. Everything tuned out fine. Including the dessert. Good place to try out.

This review is really only for the ceviche. The Ceviche Mixto, in particular - though their other ceviche options are delish, too. First off: a Peruvian restaurant masquerading as a Mexican restaurant? Next to Lowe's? Curiouser and curiouser. More seriously... this is the best ceviche I have had - better than Costa Rica, better than LA. Fish, octopus, red onions, sweet potato, hominy-style-corn that has a name that escapes me now, spicy lime, my oh my. Eat there. Eat this dish. My folks are dedicated regulars, and upon returning to Norman this summer I have become one, too.

All around one of the best dining experiences you will have in Norman. Quiet ambiance with a clean and friendly staff. They offer free chips queso and salsa. Also they have a green salsa with avocado and that is premium.I would encourage mixing this salsa with queso. Tortillas are freshly prepared and the food. Woah. The ceviche I would strongly encourage this best I have had in the Midwest. Julie's guiso also is a top quality item with excellent carne. The meat is marinaded and isn't overly fatty. The Peruvian dishes are all excellent and would encourage any one that hasn't experienced Peruvian food to be bold and go try Mamaveccas! All around excellent quality, no rush feeling like other restaurants in the area. Down right delicious.

We tend to forget about Mamaveca's because it is in somewhat of an odd location between Lowe's and Wal Mart. The location is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because the food and service are wonderful. We always start our meal with the Botana (grilled onions, jalapeños with sliced potatoes and then slices of avocado). By the time we fill up on the Botana and the complimentary flour and corn tortillas, salsa, queso and chips, we are so full we cannot eat another bite. However, the food itself is so good that we both end up finishing most of our entrees. I usually order the cheese enchiladas but last time I went rogue and ordered the chili rellano dinner, which I think I will order every time now. My husband orders lots of different items and is always happy with his dinner. I have not tried any of the Peruvian meals because we go there to eat Mexican food. However, the Peruvian dishes sound delicious. Margaritas are good; just your basic margarita. Large glasses for water and tea that the waiters always have filled for you. As with most places in Norman, everyone is very friendly and helpful.

Good food and decent atmosphere. Was a little pricey and Saltado seemed a little too salty but was still delicious!

Best Mexican and Peruvian food in town. The fresh tortillas alone are worth the trip. If you like hot salsa, their green sauce is great with a wonderful flavor. My wife and I love the Jalea Mixta. The food is excellent. The only reason I can not give this restaurant five stars is due to the poor service. As consistent as Mamaveca's is with great food. the staff is as consistent in providing less than adequate service. You might consider this a five star restaurant if refills on drinks, tortillas or chips are not important to you. However, most of the time I have to search out someone to get my drinks refilled. The only reason we keep returning is simply that they have the best food in town. It definitely isn't because of the wonderful staff who act as if they are doing you a favor to take your order.

Best Mexican food in town. The staff is friendly and the tortillas remind me of when I lived in south Texas. Love this place!

I hate to be the one not raving, but my meal here was just okay. The restaurant is clean and nice decor. They service was good. We ordered both Mexican and Peruvian dishes. They were on the oily side. There wasn't a lot of flavor. It was edible but nothing wonderful. My kids did not like their rice or chicken, which hardly ever happens. I probably won't go out of my way to have a meal here again anytime soon, especially since there are several other locally owned Mexican restaurants.

One of the best restaurants in Norman! Very fast service, clean, and there's always plenty of tables. The only drawbacks this restaurant is that some of the servers are not always on task and the location sucks.

  • Paola C.

Beans and rice were from a mix not freshly made. Tortillas seem to be made in house and were pretty good. Enchiladas and burritos were average at best. Didn't try any Peruvian dishes but the Mexican food was generally below average.

This place is hard to find if you aren't looking for it; that said it has got to be one of Oklahoma's hidden treasures. I came here with fairly high expectations after reading some of these reviews and this place absolutely blew me out of the water. I ended up having the Seafood Paella, one of their Peruvian specialties, and was astounded at how delicious it was. The flavor was rich and seafood was miraculously fresh (even in the middle of OK). The service was great, they give you free chips, salsa, and queso. Even free desert sopapillas! I definitely will be returning.

Meh. The quality of food varies. But to be fair, we like 'tex-mex' and have never tried the more classic Peruvian dishes and we hear that these are very good.

Growing up in Norman, OK, moving away, and then going back to visit family, I had to usually lower my culinary standards as to what delights awaited in my previous home town. My most recent trip to Norman was, however, a very welcome contradiction to past dining adventures in the Heartland of America; and Mamaveca was a solid contributor. My sister, her man and myself were on the hunt for some food. We were on the West side of Norman; she was scouring her brain for something good when she remembered "a Mexican restaurant which serves Peruvian food". I was intrigued. The restaurant itself is pretty nondescript. Typical Midwest Mexican restaurant. We were seated and presented with a basket of light and crispy corn chips; each of us was given a bowl of very decent salsa and cheese dip (which was just okay). I perused the menu, focusing on the Peruvian lunch offerings. My eyes locked into the final item on the menu: 'Ceviche'. I think my bro-in-law ordered fajitas, which he said were good. My sister ordered another Peruvian dish... I can't recall what it was but it was a slab of meat with fries. She gave it a solid thumbs up. My ceviche was quite good. Full of flavor, and almost more food than I could eat. Mamaveca is definitely a place to check out.

I like to try local places when traveling and I saw the reviews by Belinda and Alan on Yelp and decided to try Mamaveca in Norman. The restaurant is painted bright yellow and orange and you can't miss it right across the street from Lowes. They serve both salsa and queso with chips to start the meal. This was a nice plus and my daughter really liked the queso. They serve traditional Mexican dishes and Peruvian dishes. Both my wife and I tried Peruvian dishes and liked them. Unfortunately I don't know the name of my wife's dish. It had fried seafood (shrimp, chunks of fish, mussels) topped with purple onions, a type of pico de gallo and lime juice. There was also a cream based dipping sause that my wife really enjoyed. I had a mixed seafood ceviche. Here's the wikapedia description: "raw fish filet cut into pieces and marinated in lemon juice, onions, and aji limo." The dish had generous helpings of shimps and chunks of tangy fish. It was a full meal and delicious. I saw the table next to us order the Lomo Saltado, which is a beef dish. It looked good too. Here is a description: Lomo Saltado: Peruvians take strips of steak and sauté it with soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, chilies, onions and tomatoes. It is then served over a bed of rice with a large helping of chips (french fries). They also ordered the traditional mexican taco salad and it looked very good. All the food was freshly prepared and flavorful. In fact, it took a while to get our dishes but we were pleased with the food once it got there. I will visit Mamaveca again the next time I'm in Norman. I will probably try the Lomo Saltado on my next visit.

Fast service, clean tables, delicious foods, and all the kids' drawings on the walls are a nice touch. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Norman. The Peruvian menu is an added bonus. (Get the ceviche mixto. You'll thank me later.)

Been there many times over the past couple years when Tarahumara's prices got outrageous. Love Mamaveca! Try the Lomito Saltado!

This is a five star "as good as it gets!" Review in the context of the OKC area. I'm so flipping glad you clicked on this review because I would like to tell you about a place where the beer flows like wine. A place where the women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. A little place called.....Mamavecas. OK SO- this ain't just a tex mex place with the usual stuff. It has a strong Peruvian influence with more than a handful of authentic dishes. You can get an enchilada. Or you can get some real deal ceviche. Listen my dear buddy, this place is so legit, esp for Norman, OK. I don't know how I hadn't been encouraged to try it yet! Ambiance/service- way better than Tarahumaras. This place doesn't rush you in and out like cattle. We had the same waiter the entire time who actually cared about how we were doing. Quieter and less frenetic than Tara's. I think this is a much more pleasant dining experience. Decor is...very standard. Free salsa and queso cheese dip. Queso was pretty standard. Salsa was great, with a smoky flavor. Not too hot. In fact, not very hot at all, which is fine by me. Salsa is above average. My wife and mom were each pleased with their Tex Mex dishes. I tried a bite of the sour cream chicken enchiladas and they were above average. I had the picante camarones with yuca, a Peruvian dish. This. Was. Awesome. I loved it. Pretty presentation, enough shrimp, cooked perfectly. The sauce was almost a cream sauce but not quite. I could have used a touch more heat in it; the heat was more a chili powder type heat than a habanero type heat. I'll dream of this dish and will be back again and again. Sorry Tarahumuara's, you've been fun, but I've met someone else. Someone I can see a real future with, and not just go through the paces with you because my friends think it's a good idea. Mamaveca's FTW!!!!

The first time I ate at Mamaveca was on a Friday for lunch. The second time I ate at a Mamaveca was that Saturday for lunch. So, I would say I am a fan, per the yelp review system.... Mamaveca has very good service. Each time I dined, as soon as I sat down, I had chips, salsa, and queso brought immediately. Drinks are brought and refilled quickly, and even when it was crowded on a weekend, the kitchen was humming. The restaurant is large with booth and table seating. There are TVs in a few spots throughout the restaurant, so most seats have a good view. The relish (pickled jalapeno, onion, and carrots) is fantastic. Some of the best I've had, our whole party loved it. The salsa has a little heat, not much, but more than the typical table salsa at a Mexican place. Very good when mixed with the queso. They have some solid lunch specials, they are priced well, you get a lot of food, and there is quite a variety. My first time, I went with the chicken quesadilla and beef taco. These are served with rice and beans, and it's quite a lunch. I wouldn't recommend eating this if you have a meeting to attend after lunch, you'll likely need a nap. The chicken quesadilla was grilled perfectly, the tortilla had a great crispness to it. There is plenty of cheese and juicy chicken. I know quesadillas are everywhere and easy to do, but this one really stood out. Likewise, the asada was juicy, and there was plenty of it. I liked the lunch so much, I ordered it the second time as well. There is the usual Mexican beer menu, and prices were reasonable. The location isn't the best, you've got to want to go to Mamaveca, or find yourself hungry after a shopping trip to Lowe's. But, it's worth it if you go. I'll return.

I've been going to this place for a few years now, both for Mexican and Peruvian food. While my husband loves the Mexican food, I prefer the Peruvian food. Atmosphere: 4 stars Nothing special here. It's your typical hole in the wall Mexican food restaurant. What I do like is that you can hold a conversation. The music isn't too loud, the booths/table arrangements with dividers to break the dining area into sections, and the kitchen being behind the scenes makes it a much less chaotic atmosphere than most Mexican food places around Norman. Wait Staff: 2 stars The staff is not that great. Service is really slow, and not in the good way where you wait on fresh food. If you don't ask for tortillas, and special salsa up front with your drinks, you are likely not getting it before your food comes out. Several times I've had to ask another waiter for something, or asked a 2nd, or 3rd time. But the people are nice. Menu: 5 stars Is there anything in the Mexican food realm that this place doesn't have? I'd be surprised if you couldn't find what you were looking for here. And if you did, I'm betting the staff could make it. A special twist on this restaurant... they have Peruvian food too! It started out years ago with a small menu on certain nights, but they have now extended the Peruvian offering and it's served daily (lunch and dinner)! Food: 4 stars My husband really, really likes their Mexican food. I'm not much of a fan. Their Spanish rice tastes more like fried rice, and it has peas, carrots, green beans, and corn in it. Kinda odd. I also found everything to generally be salty. But I go here for the Peruvian food. I've tried a few things, but the Picante de Camaron (Sauteed shrimp with Peruvian yellow pepper sauce, served with yuca or white rice - $13.55) is my favorite. It's on the salty side, but still good. This is the only Peruvian food I've had, so I don't have anything to compare to, but I'm a fan. They also have homemade tortillas, which is a win in my book! The cheese sauce is pretty bland, but they have a green salsa that's hotter that we mix in, and it's pretty good like that. Price: 5 stars Prices are typical of Mexican food and are quite reasonable. The Picante de Camaron is $13.55, which isn't bad for the amount of food you get and that it contains shrimp. And not just a few, it's a pretty good portion. The Mexican food is cheaper... Enchilada Dinner (2) is $9.79, Chimichanga is $10.25, Burrito Dinner is $9.79. Most things are between $9 and $13, with your basics being on the lower end. Overall: 4 stars If you are looking for a quieter place to get Mexican food, or want some Peruvian food, and don't mind taking your time, I recommend giving this place a try.

Just came back from eating with my sister at the Norman location (there's a new Edmond location that opened a few weeks ago) and it was yummy as usual! I was able to redeem my awesome Wimgo certificate ($10 for $20 worth of food). Like the many times before the service was excellent. A couple of new things that I have noticed: green salsa with avocado and pickled veggies (carrots, onions, and jalapeños) now come with the free tortilla chips/queso/red salsa, there's $7.99 bucket of bud/or bud l. on game days (not sure if it's only sooner football), and I THINK that the Peruvian menu might now be offered everyday since the "Served only Wednesday through Sunday" print on the menu is now covered with tape (I might be wrong though so call and verify if you must have Peruvian). They also have happy hour M-F from 3PM (I think) to 6PM and an item-specific daily lunch special for $4.99.. Happy hour includes a couple of drink specials and $4 or $5 nachos special. Our waiter was great! He knew a lot about the different ingredients in our dishes (of course the ceviche, what else?!) and he was super enjoyable to talk to. When the bill came and I gave him my card he even reminded me about my gift certificate that I had almost forgotten to surrender. After our meal he introduced us to the owner's wife who told us about their website. Check it out now for their menu: mamavecarestaurant.com/i…

This was a cool 'find'. If you are traveling through Norman and want a good place to grab something different, whip off of I35 and swing by here. Pick off of the Peruvian menu for a shot of something new and different. We don't normally stop very long when doing road trips, but we had some time to kill. I'm glad we stopped here.

I hate to be the rain on the Mamaveca parade but my meal here was... okay. It wasn't bad at all- it just wasn't remarkable- so three stars seemed appropriate (since 3 stars = A-OK according to Yelp). The restaurant itself is bright, cheery, and clean. Service is friendly and prompt. It seems like it takes a little time for your food to reach you but nothing ridiculous or unreasonable. Both dishes that were ordered (one Peruvian dish, one Mexican dish) were definitely edible but on the oily side. If you're interested in trying the Peruvian items, I believe they're served from Wednesday through Sunday. I'd certainly recommend Mamaveca to anyone wanting a solid, non-chain dining experience in Norman but I probably won't go out of my way to have a meal here again anytime soon.

We ate at the new Mamaveca's in Edmond for dinner and it was really great. We saw the sign when we passed by one day and had no idea when we got there that it was anything but a Mexican restaurant. I wish we had seen the reviews before we went and I would have tried the Peruvian food. My girlfriend loves ceviche and she was really excited to see that they had several types on the menu. She got the Ceviche de Mixto and she loved it. The presentation of the plate was amazing. It was the nicest looking ceviche dish I have ever seen. I tried a piece of her calamari and it was perfect. The ceviche is much spicier than the Mexican ceviche she normally gets but it wasn't too spicy. I got an enchilada, tamale and taco with maiz cremoso (cream corn with green chilies) and papas (potatoes mashed with the skins and lots of cheese). The Mexican food was also very good and so much of it that I brought half home for lunch the next day. We had a couple of Mexican beers served in ice cold frosted mugs with salt and lime. I have seen a few reviewers say that the service was slow but the top of the menu clearly states "All Peruvian items are cooked to order, so please allow extra time to prepare" so drink a cold beer, eat some chips and salsa and enjoy the wait....it is worth it. The Edmond location is at 840 W Danforth Rd.

I've eaten here a few times now and I'd have to say the mexican food is pretty good. Coming from Colorado I am kind of biased towards a certain style (mostly spicier and hotter) of mexican food. This isn't too bad but sometimes I feel the seasoning in the meat leaves something to be desired but I think thats more of my personal taste versus what is served in this area. Their Peruvian selection of food mostly involves seafood which I don't eat very much. However there were a couple of non-seafood dishes which I think I'll try some time. I've ordered beer twice here and both time they served my beer in a frozen margarita glass. A little strange but it keeps the beer cold so I guess it works.

I ate Peruvian food here in fall 2009 when in town to see a U2 concert.. I went here with some Peruvian people who live in Norman, and the fact that they like it is an endorsement of sorts in itself. They have a Peruvian menu and a Mexican menu. I understand the founder of this family business is Peruvian, but the website says that members of the family come from Peru and elsewhere in Latin America (so maybe some are from Mexico..) I can't comment on the Mexican food because I did not try it. But I was thrilled to find Peruvian food here, and that is the reason to come to this place.. I have had better Peruvian food in California or in Brazil (yeah I didn't ever go to Peru, but the best Peruvian restaurant I ever tried is in Maceio, Brazil), but this place seems pretty good and the prices are reasonable.. One of the other reviews suggests they may only have Peruvian food Wed - Sunday , so call ahead to confirm that the Peruvian menu is available. What I don't understand is why the owners don't advertise the fact that they have Peruvian food, by, for example, calling it a Mexican and Peruvian restaurant, or hanging some Peruvian flags outside, or something..

I would not have seen this place if it wasn't for me having to take my car to wallyworld to get the tire changed (i blowout alot of tires, ask my hubby). I decided to walk across the parking lot to eat lunch at Mamaveca since the wait for my car was going to be a while. I was a little confused when I saw the owner, she was definately not mexican. Come to find out she is from Peru. I was a little worried the food wouldn't be good. It would be like me making peruvian food. But I was pleased with the food here. Again, I ordered the chicken enchiladas. If you follow my reviews on mexican restaurants, I liked to compare them to mine. The chicken in there was juicy and had a great flavor. The sour cream sauce was just that, sour cream (or at least it tasted like it). Hopefully they will add a green enchilada sauce to their menu...I bet it would taste super great with the chicken. (just a thought...) The salsa was fresh, but I again asked for the hot stuff. The waitress brought out some that had avocate (thats avocado to u pale faces) and it was super spicy and good. Just the right kick I needed with my meal. The boys ate my rice and beans for me (diet!) and didnt complain so they must have been good. I liked this place. I am going to go back...I now curious to try the peruvian food they have there. There was one that had potatoes with some sauce over it...sounded good.

We've visited this resturant several times for lunch and have always enjoyed it. The food has always tasted fresh and flavorful. The owner and his wife are from Puru and they also offer a variety of Puruvian dishes in addition to the usual enchiladas and tacos (which are great by the way). Considering there's a brand new Ted's location on the other side of I-35, they have a lot of competition in the area. I'm a Ted's fan, but when I'm in this vacinity, I'm more likely to choose Mamaveca and that's saying a lot.

  • Don W.

This place is the best for Mexican in central Oklahoma. I have frequented a great number of Mexican restaurants, including Ted's at least a dozen times, Chelino's scores of times, Los Dos Amigo's, San Marco's (OKC), Pepe Delgado's, Talamahara, and many other restaurants in the metro, as well as elsewhere. None of these restaurants, however, match Mamaveca in any category - not in service, flavor, food quality, value, or anything else really! Since I moved to Norman in 2001, I have seen 2 other businesses fail at the same location, but I believe this place will finally break the trend. Since I first dined there about a 1 1/2 years ago, business has exploded. Word has begun to get around, and Mamaveca is beginning to bustle. Likes: Great service - sometimes slow when they are super packed, but typically fast and always very attentive and good-natured. Their chips, salsa, and queso are unmatched, and this is the only restaurant that I would say makes fresh flour tortillas as well as Ted's does (if not better). The chips are thin and light, white corn tortilla-based, perfectly crispy & well salted. Also, in addition to standard Tex Mex, the menu contains Peruvian dishes, including many seafood delights such as Spanish paella. The sour cream queso that tops some of their entrées items blows any other sauce that I've had at a Mexican restaurant clean away. They also serve complimentary sopapillas after your meal, which is fairly standard in the area, and have delicious "margarita" mints at the checkout counter. If anybody reads this and knows where I can find these in a store, I will declare you emperor. Just to reiterate how good the place is, I had tried for years (without success) to get my wife, who's French, to like Mexican food. It wasn't until she experienced Mamaveca, particularly their salsa and tortillas, that she came around. Now she's an addict! Dislikes: There isn't a lot that I do not like about this place. I have dined there at least a dozen times now, and I have only had a slightly less than stellar experience once or twice. I'm not crazy about their nachos, which are plenty good, but not as full of a plate as some of their competition provides. The Spanish style rice is just okay, but I'm really not expecting top notch gourmet out of that item, and it's as good as any of its local competition. Mamaveca is a real gem in every way! It's become my go-to restaurant in Norman, and that says a lot.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
