Visited Jax for the fourth time this past Friday night. This rating is about the food. Our first visit (about a week after it opened) was a hit and we keep going back thinking maybe we'll have that same experience again but we're disappointed each time. Our first visit, the seafood fondue and etoufee were well-stocked with fish and the catfish batter was crispy and just the right thickness. Each time after our first visit, we've noticed the quality of food has suffered. The batter on our calamari, last night, was so thick and hard, it could've been mistaken for Sonic batter - we could barely taste the squid. Our fried chicken had the same problem. Not to mention, they don't provide lemons for the fried seafood - I figure this is a no-brainer. We've ordered the seafood fondue twice and, both times, it barely had any fish (just some really small scallops) and it was very soupy. They've also lessened the amount of fish in the etoufee (good-sized shrimp but very few). If it's the cost of seafood, I'd rather pay more money for good food than a little money for bad quality. The prices are reasonable for the type of food but not the quality. We were looking forward to some decent soul food in Norman and I hope The Good Life Group gives this place some TLC. It's a charming spot and has a great location.

The smoked shrimp, dirty rice, beans & rice, sweet potato mash were fantastic. I would skip the pulled chicken, it was cold, bland and the sauce it came with was too vinegary. I would also skip the cheesy grits, hardly any flavor. Great resturant environment & service though!

I moved to Norman from New Orleans, so I'm always skeptical of this theme. But the gumbo, jambalaya, and etouffe were tasty and well-seasoned. Never seen a jambalaya like this in Acadiana, but so what. Norman bakeries will never reproduce NOLA's po'boy bread. Too expensive to deliver it twice a day. But La Baguette does a decent Okie version. I'll go back.

My friends and I love to come for the cheap drinks and sit in the back area with sofas but I can't write this review and not talk about the food! My suggestion is to order the creole trois-you get a sampling of the gumbo, jambalaya and etoufee! All the meat plates are great and the sweet potatoes and collard greens are the best sides in my opinion! I'm a huge fan of this new campus corner spot! A good addition as a place to get drinks with friends but also a great place for a good meal. Service is still iffy. I've had some really hit and miss waitors. If i'm with a big group I usually prep myself to be patient with them, but when it's small scale they are usually on top of it!

Expand time having Jax and it was just as good as the first time! The wait staff is excellent, they are very attentive and friendly. The food is really good, it's full of flavor and prepared well. I haven't been disappointed with anything that I've had there. The best party is the atmosphere it's quiet and relaxed a perfect date night place. But they also have a lounge type room and patio in the back that is perfect to have a few drinks with friends or family.

I was in town for a conference and visited Jax after a long day of talks. The ambiance is pretty nice. My colleagues had mixed things to say about the food, so I only ordered an appetizer of fried okra. The plate was HUGE, and the okra wasn't all that exciting. Pretty dry and under-seasoned. Despite what you may be thinking as you read this, okra doesn't have to be that way. Regardless, we had a pleasant enough time, and the beer selection is good. I recommend going there for drinks, but don't get your expectations up about the food.

I wanted to like Jax a lot more, but there were several issues with the food. I also went back and forth on whether to give Jax a 2 or 3 star rating. So, this is really a 2.5 star rating I suppose. We ate at Jax on a Thursday around 6:30. The place wasn't packed, only about 4 tables seated, but a steady stream of people came in while we were eating. We were seated in a comfortable booth with a good view of basketball playing on the TVs. Our server immediately took our drink orders and returned a couple of minutes later with them. My 4 year old wasn't in the best mood, and she was fantastic with him. So, I was very appreciative of her attitude, she was great. I had a coupon from eating lunch at Blu (a sister establishment) that gave a free seafood fondue dip with the purchase of two entrees. I've been meaning to try Jax, so something free was just the thing to get me to go. The seafood fondue did not work. I am leary of cheese and seafood in most settings anyway, and this is the reason why. The cheesy part was a tad greasy, but even without that issue the flavors didn't work well. Additionally, the bread wasn't toasted, maybe a bit on the outside, but the inside was soft. This type of dip needs a crunchy bread in my estimation. So, I was very glad I didn't pay for it, as it was a miss. To eat, I had the catfish po' boy and my son (4 years old) had the mac n cheese. They have an interesting, I believe it's called "dirty" mac n cheese on the menu made with Andouille sausage and peppers. It sounded fantastic, but since my boy was ordering it, the server advised against all the extra stuff, as it is spicy. So, I appreciated her warning us rather than letting him take a bite and start crying. But, when his food arrived, it was basically a slightly higher level of Kraft mac n cheese. The sauce was creamy enough, but lacked sharp cheese flavor. He liked it, so that was the goal. And, maybe it's good when you order it as is, like I said, it sounded great. But, it was very bland in this state. My po' boy was on a fantastic crunchy roll, served with lots of cole slaw and a nice remoulade with a little kick. So far, so good. But, the catfish was VASTLY overfried, it was beyond dry. And, it was extremely thin. It was so thin I could barely taste it through all of the cole slaw and bread, so I ordered another piece. This one had a bit more juiciness to it, but it was still dryer than it should have been. I think the breading is too thick and the fish are sliced too thin, resulting in a crunchy but very dry and thin piece of fish. I was disappointed, as the sandwich looked fantastic when it arrived. But, in this sandwich the catfish should be the star, not the bread. The fries are decent, they have some extra seasoning on them, which they needed. Crispy. The menu at Jax looks very good, and I am impressed with Good Life's other restaurants in Norman. So, I will be back. Hopefully I caught them on a bad night and next time I can write an update with a much higher rating.

The beans and rice were bland, and there wasn't any crawfish on the menu during crawfish season. It seems crazy to say you're cajun/creole and not offer anything with crawfish. The etoufee is made with shrimp.

The drinks were good. The service was amazing. Danielle was a ton of fun and put up with our odd sense of humor. We enjoyed the deviled egg potato salad. I ordered the creole trois. My friend got the shrimp and grits. Both were fine, but needed more spice. Hopefully they will turn up the heat on the dishes. If so, it'll be a definite go-to.

I would give it a solid 3.5 if I could do half stars. Come with change for a meter out front if you're lucky to catch one, it's $1 an hour. The menu looks and sounds delicious, but items were hit and miss with other tried and new home cooked Nawlins dishes. (Some of our party was born and raised in Baton Rouge). We ordered the fried shrimp po'boy which was delicious! They smoke the shrimp then fry and it was almost a light cornmeal batter, with lots of fresh pepper. The potato salad is pretty good too. Remoulade had a bit too much horseradish for me, but still pretty decent. We started with the seafood fondue. Very very rich, very very good! Lots of mushrooms though, which aren't listed so beware if you don't like mushrooms. To me, the taste overpowered everything but the scallops but that's ok because I love shrooms. We also had the shrimp étouffée. My shrimp were white and a little over cooked and rubbery. It was ok, but kind of basic and the sauce was very heavily seasoned with bay leaves. I prefer more of a peppery roux. The cornbread is LEGIT and the cheese grits were this fluffy creamy whipped concoction and were really good! I have no idea how they get the texture, but they are good! Then the gumbo. This was beyond terrible. Tiny baby shrimp, no other meats. Very watery and just an awful off taste, like the bottom of the batch that had maybe been scorched. I don't know. But the staff was so nice and exchanged the dish for the jambalaya which was outstanding! Full of flavor and spice and just all around great. (In our opinion and experience, their version of jambalaya is what most call gumbo) I would go back, but I would stick to what we know is good like the fried shrimp and the grits.

Kinda nervous when I walked in and it wasn't very busy. But the food was extremely good. Had the smoked fried chicken.

I've never had a bad meal here. The all-stars here (in my opinion) are the sides. My boyfriend and I usually get two platters so we can have 4 sides between the two of us (don't judge me). My personal favorites are the cheesy corn and the potato salad. But the grits and collards are also solid. Fried catfish is all I've tried, but it's good. And they are a part of the Good Life group, so you know what that means...$2 wells, $3 doubles! Beer selection should be hyped more because they have a lot of good stuff!

How can you say no to this place? It's what you would expect from a Cajun restaurant. Great service excellent food. Perfect location for romance and/or friends night out.

The atmosphere here is amazing. I loved the bar area and special couch seating in the back. This place has a great ambiance and is great for chillaxing. Although service was stellar, the food was not very impressive. We ordered fried catfish that was chewy and did not taste right. I sent it back and it came back the same. I also tried the seafood gumbo which was so so. It came with some rockin cornbread though. The crispy shrimp is ok if you like your shrimp smoked, be prepared it's not your regular fried shrimp flavor. The calamari and fried okra were the best things we ordered. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the food but I loved the atmosphere.

I'd really give it 2.5 stars, but not good enough for 3. Disclaimer: This was based on one visit on New Year's Day. I didn't see enough potential to make me want to go back to give it another try though. Atmosphere: 5 stars I was really liking the atmosphere here and was so excited to try the food. It's lit well, has character, is specious, and set up in a cool way. There were only 4 other tables occupied (about 1/4 of the tables in the main area, minus bar seating...so not full), but the sound level was low and it was easy to hold a conversation. Conversation at nearby tables didn't travel as much as I thought it would given the tall ceilings and open area. At the back of the restaurant there is a 2nd level. Music was played in the background and it was more trendy, Indy music, which fit the feel of the restaurant well. The bar was definitely the centerpiece of the dining area and looked cool. Oh, and there was a lounge in the back on the bottom floor that looked cool with big couches. Menu: 3 stars Nothing on the menu seemed all that original. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mention it for the prices. They had the staples of any Cajun place (etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo, shrimp & grits, etc.), but seemed higher end given the limited menu and higher prices. They also had 2 salads, po'boys, and some platters items, with a large selection of sides, and a few desserts, but no bread pudding. The menu definitely sets an expectation. Food: 2 stars Knowing this was a part of the Good Life Dining Group which owns Blu and Backbird (both delicious restaurants!), I ordered the Smoked Shrimp & Grits ($17) and was expecting something delicious, similar to Blu's BBQ Shrimp & Grits from an older menu of theirs. Boy was I disappointed! The description says, "dusted shrimp over creamy grits with a creole BBQ sauce and bacon". The shrimp (7 medium) were flat out battered and fried (tail-off). WHAT? Dusted? No. The grits tasted like they were the Quaker quick-cook kind. They were mushy, bland, and had no seasoning. The creole BBQ sauce and bacon was not authentic creole BBQ sauce. And there was no bacon. The sauce was like a rich, salty gravy, or like a thick, dark fisherman's stew liquid. It wasn't spicy, it was way too salty, and it didn't have that buttery richness that creole BBQ sauce has. The only good thing I can say is that the breading on the shrimp had a decent kick to it. I also was not full, or even satisfied, when I finished my palate. For $17, either I better be full, or it better be delicious. Husband ordered the Creole Trois ($12). It had a small cup each of jambalaya, gumbo, and etouffee. Immediately when they brought it out I commented on how little food was on his plate. He too was disappointed. Even more so when he tried everything. I didn't like the jambalaya at all. The chicken in it was good, but the dish tasted dusty with seasoning with an odd bite. The gumbo was OK, and the etouffee was really watered down, super fishy tasting, and really salty. Husband left hungry and we picked something up for him on the way home. I'm OK with smaller portions, especially when it's creative, fine food. But this was neither. This was supposed to be soul food. Portions should be generous. You shouldn't be leaving hungry. Any southerner would be embarrassed if you left their table hungry! Staff: 2 stars As I mentioned, there were 4 other tables. One table of 5, two tables of 4, and two tables of 2, and then our table of 2. They only had one bartender and one server working in the dining area. We were promptly seated by the bartender and given a menu. Long after we decided what we wanted, our waiter finally took our drink order. A long while after that, our drinks (water) were finally delivered. He said he would be right back to take our order, but he went to two other tables and then disappeared to the kitchen. The bartender saw us looking for him, and came to take our order. She was also the one who delivered our food and filled our drinks. About half way though us eating, our waiter finally came back over and apologized and asked us if everything came out right. Then disappeared again. We were finished for quite some time before the bartender took our plates. And we waited even longer for our waiter to finally reappear. He filled our drinks, and we had to ask him to bring the check. After that, we got out quickly. Prices: 1 stars This place is so incredibly overpriced! If the food was outstanding, I'd be OK with the prices. But the quality seemed really low. If the portions had been double what they were, I would have been OK with the prices. But we paid $29 (before tax and tip) for 7 fried shrimp, instant grits, and lousy Cajun staples, and were not even full. Overall: 2.5 stars There are so many things wrong with their food, I don't see it having enough potential for me to give it a 2nd try. Such a let down!

Jax is a fantastic addition to campus corner. For me, the service was great. My drink was always full and the food was fast. The drinks are cheap-- $2 well drinks, $3 doubles, and $1 draft beers after 10 (I don't know if they do this everyday, but they did it on Saturday night). For dinner, my husband and I had the jambalaya, cheesy grits, and an andouille po boy. Overall, we were really impressed. The jambalaya was on point and delicious. The perfect mix of pulled pork, shredded chicken, and andouille over a bed of rice. I had no complaints. I would recommend the cheesy grits to anyone. The fluffy, creamy, thick texture is to die for. The best grits I've had in the area. The andouille po boy was pretty good as well. The andouille was tasty, but we weren't a huge fan of the coleslaw. It wasn't bad, though. We will definitely be back!

Jax is a fun little space with decent Southern-inspired food. I recommend getting the trio of gumbo, jambalaya and étouffée if it's your first time there, so you can try a bit of several things - I liked the étouffée best. The collard greens were tasty but a bit greasy and the bacon in them had some unrendered fat. My only complaint is that, like so many "southern" places outside the South, the mint julep had a ton of water in it, making it more like a bourbon mojito than a proper julep. The menu didn't say anything about water so I had high hopes, but sadly it was not to be. The server was very nice and promptly brought me a different drink though, so it's all good.

Beautiful layout of the restaurant, lots of TV around if you want to watch sports, we watched the thunder game and the atmosphere was fun! I tried the sampler dish, overall most of the dishes are spicy. Their Creole sauce is tasty and the corn bread is really good! Staff was very nice and helpful!

Love the private room upstairs. Our server was great. Wonderful service and handled our large crew including three rowdy kids very well. Onion rings are awesome. No kids menu but they were able to accommodate and have mac and cheese minus the dirty. Really loved the creole trio. It was a little spicy but delicious!

Service: terrific. Even the tiny mistake made was quickly fixed. The service was very good. The beer I ordered had a problem with the keg/tap. They gave me half the beer that would pour for free and a manager came over to apologize. Ambiance: you know...at first I thought it was a little, like, plain. And then I thought it was a little too much like Blakcbird. But after I sat in it for fifteen minutes, I kind of loved it. Lengthy wood floors, TVs available (like every place in Norman) but not overly so. Nice tables and lamps. I enjoyed the ambiance! Food: like someone said, this isn't going to just nail NOLA/creole food. I also tried the creole trois, and it was better than OK, but not mind blowing. The jambalaya tastes nice, but does need some work. it is like stew over rice, instead of being a rice dish. Gumbo had a creole earthiness to it, but I could use some bolder flavors. The etoufee was nice. I mean, it's not NOLA, but for these parts, it's passable and enjoyable. Now, the good stuff. We split the fried crispy shrimp po' boy. (Might have gotten the name wrong, but it's similar to that.) To me, a true po' boy is super reliant on the bread. Needs to be french baguette style bread. this wasn't that, but it was tasty. The cole slaw? Above average. the shrimp? Whoa mama. I haven't had shrimp like that perhaps anywhere every before. I don't know how to describe it, but it's like...it's fried shrimp with breading, but not the typical. Like it has been twice-cooked or something. id on't know how to describe it, but it was AWESOME. Not even kidding a little bit, this is probably the best fried shrimp in the OKC metro. I mean, it's great. I want to be friends with this shrimp. I'd help this shrimp move apartments. I'd pick this shrimp up at the airport. Sides: beans and rice was nice, not great. Not high end red beans and rice, NOLA, but still good (slap some Louisiana hot sauce on it.) The dirty rice: we both really liked it. It had meat in it, i think. All in all, there is room for improvement. Now that they've been open a bit, I'd like to see them tweak their seasonings a bit in accordance with feedback they've received. But the food is enjoyable, the ambiance is nice, and it kicks the shell out of The Shack, IMO.

This place is great! I love the fried chicken and potato salad! The fried okra is huge and delicious. The patio in the back is a nice little place to sit for drinks as well.

I ordered the Creole trois which is a small serving of gumbo, étouffée, and jambalaya. So I don't want to be the guy from New Orleans that is super picky and pertinacious about the dish. Because the gumbo and the étouffée were tasty. But I was disappointed with the jambalaya, and not because the dish was not easy to eat but because it was frankly not jambalaya. It was a pork and sausage stew poured over rice. Jambalaya should not be served over rice because it is in itself a rice dish. I said I wasn't going to do that didn't I? Portions were really small which was disappointing. That's not the southern hospitality and comfort I was looking for. Let's be honest a lot of these dishes are rice based so stop being stingy it's not filet or lobster. Bottom line, restaurant was clean, service was average, and I'll be back again if someone wants to go but I don't think I'll have a craving for small portions and liberal interpretations of classic dishes on my own.

I'll start off by saying, the week after finals week (and summer) is the best time to go out to eat on campus corner! Great parking, no waiting, no annoying college kids... Just kidding, I love college kids, but it's nice to avoid crowds of them when trying to dine out with your tiny baby in Norman. We were on our way to Blackbird for lunch when we decided to check out this new restaurant instead. I frequented this place when it was In The Raw, so I had high expectations for this location, and I was not disappointed. I love the new renovation. Very open, relaxing, but polished atmosphere. It was a really welcoming and comfortable place to go to eat, and it seems like a great place to go have a drink too. They must have saw us walking up because we were greeted with a high chair when they asked us where we wanted to sit. The bar is beautiful and takes up a large portion of the middle of the restaurant on the lower level. They had a few tables and several very comfortable-looking booths. Big televisions visible from almost every table. This is exactly the kind of place you want to eat soul food, which is their specialty. The hostess and waitress were extremely friendly and accommodating. I liked the small, specialized menu. Our food came out really fast. I'm not an expert on creole food, but I loved everything that we ordered. I decided on the jambalaya and my husband had the fried chicken with a side of collard greens and a side of the sweet potato mash. I've read a few reviews on yelp that say this isn't a tradition jambalaya, and maybe it isn't, but it was delicious, warm and satisfying. It wasn't very spicy, but I fixed it up really well with the hot sauce at the table. I loved it and I loved the cornbread that came with it! It FELT like good food for the soul. From my husbands plate, the friend chicken was crispy and juicy and scrumptious. My favorite thing, maybe, was the sweet potato mash. It was sweet and perfectly mashed and I would go back just for a side of that. I thought the portions and prices were fair. I ate all of my plate and left very satisfied. Overall, a great dining experience. I was surprised that I hadn't heard of this place before. We will go back and I can't wait to try other items off the menu, especially the drinks and desserts.

Came here with husband, friends and our two toddlers. Fancy environment, definitely a place you can dress up to but relaxed enough to not feel obligated to. The staff was so friendly and accommodating to our children, and the food was delicious! Not overpriced. I'm definitely coming back. The only thing negative id have to say about this place is the noise level was a tad bit high, then again it was Saturday night!

  • Christopher T.

Wasn't too pleased to be told by our sever that we had to leave within 20 minutes for a "party" that was coming in...there were at least 5 tables open. This, to me, felt like I was being rushed out after tipping 100% on my tab. Is this really the vibe they want to give off? I think not.

I tried this place on a boring Wednesday lunch. Only 3 other people dining in the place. Because of this, I expected subpar service, but it was actually good. The bartender even came to check on me and I voiced my issues about the gumbo (see below). The food here is the biggest issue I have. I got the creole trois, a combo of gumbo, Etoufee, and jambalaya. I will say the Etoufee was great. Big shrimps, good flavor. The jambalaya was a bit watery, which I don't expect of jambalaya. It wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't order it again. The gumbo, on the other hand, was just plain bad. It had no distinct flavor and even tasted somewhat off, like it was missing something critical to have any sort of flavor. Okra? Salt? Sausage? I don't know. The bartender did day that they are tinkering with recipes and trying to improve them, so that's something. To sum, I am not sure I'll go back unless I have a real yen for Etoufee. The ambiance is actually nice. I'll reevaluate in a few weeks maybe.

Excellent. Food = 5, Service = 5, facility = 4. Was not pleased with sports TVs. Would be Nice to go out and eat and not be at a sports bar no matter how good the food is. Regardless, Will go back!

Great atmosphere and very good Caesar salad. I had the catfish dinner with red beans and rice & coke slaw. I would have liked the fish to a little drier than what came out but it was still good nonetheless.

Food was just ok, good service, good location. Everything seemed to have spice for the sake of spice and not on purpose. Dirty Mac and Cheese was the best item. Spicy Caesar salad was the worst. Had pulled pork, short ribs, cheese grits, greens. Desert was pretty tasty. Great beer and wine selection.

Jax is one of the newest restaurants in Norman, and I already love it. I cannot comment on the food, as I have not been during restaurant hours, but their bar is fantastic! They have the largest selection of Oklahoma brewed beers which include the best brews from Coop, Dead Armadillo, Prairie, Rough Tail, Anthem, Marshall, Mustang, and Norman's own Brewhouse. For their happy hour Brewhouse beers are $1 and pitchers of Brewhouse beers are $4. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a night out with your friends, give Jax a try!

Pretty cool atmosphere, better than expected. Hot sauce Caesar=delich!!!!! Gumbo= very bland, I expected better. Menu is not very creative, not that supper choices and they weren't as "Cajun" as I hoped. Just ok

  • Blayke H.

I, by nature and design am not a fan of cajun food. The powers that be decided to design me with a shellfish allergy which seriously hampers my abilities to eat said cuisine. However, I was very surprised and delighted by Jax. The atmosphere is excellent. Classy but not pretentious. Wood floors, booths and tables, an upstairs option, and a lounge in the back. All tastefully done. The staff was VERY attentive, and even though I didn't get any of their names, it didn't matter. Service like that is a rarity. We were seated immediately (me and my 2-year old), and when the booth we were at did not accommodate a high chair, we were whisked away by the Jax elves to a more suitable table. My drink was never empty, my questions always answered. You get massive points in my book just for the service. Seriously. Good service. You should be proud. Call your mom and let her know. The menu is pretty standard cajun: gumbo, jambalaya, etc..., but was tastefully done and had some nice innovations. I chose the smoked fried chicken with sides of grits and black-eyed peas. The chicken was okay. Nothing really special. The smoke flavor was a bit too mild, and the fried part was mediocre. It wasn't bad, just not 12 bucks worth for 2 very small bone-in chicken breasts. The sides were scrumdidilliumtious. Serious grits. I could have just eaten those. The wee lad had dirty mac-and-cheese. It was really good. Homemade mac with sausage and pulled pork mixed in. Our dining companion arrived late, but had a sampler platter of sorts and was very pleased. The menu also boasts only local beers on tap including 2 Anthem brews, which won me over instantly. They also make a sazerac. Seriously. A sazerac. Who makes those here? It was a bit pricey at $9.50 for one, and it being only noon, I abstained, but get one. They rock and are the original and oldest of American cocktails. So I will be going back. Definitely. They just opened and have a few kinks to work out, but I was really impressed. Did I mention the service? Dear Jax staff, I'm sorry my toddler made a cornbread muffin mess on the floor. He's 2. I only gave 4 and not 5 stars, for not having a kids menu, and not having appetizers. But am more than willing to upgrade as the kinks are less kinky. What am I saying? Keep it kinky Jax.

Mine and my buddies catfish tasted like lake water. Manager does not come apologize and instead chooses to get in a stare down with me when I look around for her. Unreal. The waiter was good. We would've liked to have had our meal comped because neither of us could even eat it. Never going back.
