Wednesday night dining was a breeze at this sushi bar and restaurant. While communication was at times difficult with the staff, it was more than made up for by the taste of the sushi. Choice selections of Yellowfin tuna, salmon and roe were fantastic. Well worth going but bring your wallet, as is typical with most sushi restaurants

Thrown out of restaurant by a surly maitre'di who was annoyed because we didn't realize that "lunch" table "only booked for an hour. Absurd. Ann- get new staff. Was embarrassed with ungraciousness and many other area sushi better. Disgraceful.

I really wanted to love this place - I am in desperate need of a go-to sushi spot in midtown. I saw from previous reviews that this place was featured on a korean tv show and so probably operated by koreans. I actually found that korean-operated sushi restaurants have some of the freshiest and cost-effective menu offerings, especially out in queens. I was hoping for the same match here in midtown but was sadly let down. The Sushi Deluxe $19 which has 9 sushi items and 6 pieces of a california roll was mostly rice. The fish slices were so finely thinned that I felt like I was eating fish paper. The california rolls were tiny with very little avocado or crabmeat inside. In fact, there was so little of the filling that the rice was actually rolled into and on the outside of the roll. Price comes out to $23+ with tax and delivery. No soup or salad included either. Very disappointed in the food quality given the price. The reason for 2 vs 1 star - at least I wasn't poisoned but definitely won't be back.

I have to say I liked this place, with a relaxed feeling and attentive service. Price level was also attractive. However the food was only mediocre, probably I have ordered the wrong thing - oyako don. It was a bit lack of flavor and chicken meat was so dry that it almost fell off the egg. It seemed like their sushi combo was a good bargain so would probably give a try next time.

I like the beef don. I think this restaurant's food is far worthy its price. Good lunch choice for people who work nearby.

Solid lunch spot for sit down Japanese fare. If you're looking for grab'n'go, this isn't it (Go to Glaze Teriyaki next door for that), but it's still fairly quick. There's two levels of seating, so this place rarely has a wait. On a recent visit, I ordered some sushi rolls and a nabeyaki udon. Standard salad came with my meal. Unfortunately, it was drowned like a dead rat with ginger dressing, and a pool of liquid sat at the bottom of my bowl -- sort of gross. Sushi rolls are better -- the fish here is pretty fresh, but the enveloping seaweed (nori) is damp and uncrispy. My udon, on the other hand, came piping hot and delicious. It was adorned with chicken pieces, fish cake (pink and white), soft boiled egg, scallions, mushrooms, and shrimp tempura. I wish they put the tempura on the side as it was a soggy mess when it arrived. Other than that, service is polite and efficient, and I was in and out of the joint in under 30 minutes for a three course meal. Not bad. I'd go here again for a quick Japanese sit down lunch.

Not bad. Very reasonably priced especially for NYC. Visitor here so no knowledge of the sushi bars around where i staying so decided to try this place out. Not the fanciest place, but the staff was nice, food present well and tasted good. Achieved my goal of a beer and sushi after a day If meetings. I didn't need ambiance just a place to chill. The Philly roll had an egg wrap around it, instead of seaweed and it was pretty good. The dragon roll was large and yummy. I always judge on the spicy tuna and it worked so all good. Quiet as well. No real NYC noise.

I'm not a fishy person. Lol. My girls are the big sushi lovers! But my heart does dance for sweet potato tempura rolls! These were the BEST I've had. Cucumber was also excellent. Clean restaurant, excellent service.

Gotta give them another star, as I've been going in myself to pick up orders for my boss quite a few times over the past few months, and, today, decided to try their special rolls for my lunch. The restaurant is always clean, the hostess always lovely, welcoming, and friendly, the staff pleasant, efficient, and professional, pricing on bar with other places in the area, and, my, oh my! All three special rolls were phenomenal! All flavors stood out on their own, the presentation was lovely, and the pieces just melted in my mouth! Tried the Hot Ocean Roll (the scallops on top were done to Gordon Ramsey satisfaction!), the Salmon River Roll (each type of salmon held its own and shone through), but, damn. That Final Fantasy Roll. Worth. Every. Penny (and that would be this frugal-meister not complaining about a roll just shy of $20). Go. Now. ps - They also offer fatty tuna, though I didn't see it on the pick up/delivery menu. The boss has ordered it. Mind you, 5-6 slices of sashima are around $50-60. But worth it.

Business lunch with co-workers. Overall experience was good. Service was fast and on point. We got one of the big samplers for 3 and a rainbow roll plus edamame, and cold sake (not my choice, I prefer hot). The sushi, rolls, and sashimi were all good....probably 3 to 3.5 stars. I've had better elsewhere. It wasn't cold enough. The rice paper felt stale though the rice was good. I give 4 stars bc service was great. And the decor of the whole place is wonderful. Clean and fresh. Including the bathrooms. They're a busy place for lunch so they must be doing something right. It's a good place to try out of you're looking for a sushi place. Enjoy!

Very average, not bad, not great. Had the chirachi, which was ok. Decent portion, pretty fast, but a bit disappointed with the choice of fish. Beer was good though.

This is a Midtown sushi spot very popular with the suits. Very standard traditional rolls and nothing out of the box that is going to wow you. But a good trusted choice if your in the area. The service is sometimes scattered during the lunch rush and they might forget things like a side of spicy mayo or those lemons you were promised with your water. Overall OK experience for some fresh sushi during your lunch break.

Had dinner here with my sushi-loving teen after a Monday afternoon visiting MOMA. The fish quality was fantastically fresh. The price was super reasonable. $51 for a huge sushi boat for 2. My teenager also noted the freshness and quality of the sashimi -- there were zero stringy threads of muscle or cartilage in the fish. Yes we ate it all -- but we have really great appetites, and thankfully high metabolisms! We also had miso soup, an appetizer of shishito peppers, and red bean ice cream for dessert. Total price for 2 was $71. I call that an NYC bargain, and plan to come back here.

Had a late night dinner there tonight as we were close by for an event. Found the place on yelp and I do wish people would highlight the food commentary in addition to the voluminous items on everything else that we all write about. It was not as bad as the yelpers made it out to be, and if I had just gone on stars ratings by many people on the current web site we would not have gone there. I felt That the words, or lack of words on critical topics were more important than the ratings of some yelpers. Ratings on pure service or delivery are not useful! It was late so it was quiet but we we were seated promptly and were drinking a glass of sake soon after seating. Food was the shrimp tempura with spicy mayo. The tempura was not cooked through sufficiently and the batter was a little damp, which made the taste a little less than ideal for a crispy dish. Could have cooked better. Entree was an assortment of sushi and rolls which were all edible but nothing special. The salmon was fresh and was the more fatty lower grade cut. The mackerel was a nice cut and the eel was fine and tasted good. Pieces were smaller than I am used to and the rice was a little crunchy, suggesting it may have sat for a little. For the price they charge for a single piece of sushi, I would have expected some better quality and larger pieces. Not terrible but points to a lack of attention to detail. The rolls were all ok. There was nothing special about the taste and the presentation was nice. Spicy tuna avocado with a rice paper wrapping was refreshing and tasted fresh. The avocado and eel was fine although I searched for the eel.... The other two rolls were similarly acceptable. Overall an OK experience. Probably go back if I am in area and want a quick meal if I cannot find another place.

Are you kidding me? I was traveling to NYC on business. The law firm I was visiting ordered sushi for lunch from Sushiya. It was very good, so I decided to go back the same evening with my wife for dinner. We had a sushi meal fit for two kings, with the centerpiece being the Sushi and Sashimi for two. The fish was amazingly fresh. How do I know? Because my wife who is extremely sensitive to the fishy smell that increases the longer the fish stays out of the water, and who is extremely picky in what fish she eats for sushi (mostly salmon, maybe some yellowtail) loved almost every kind of fish we were served. This was unbelievable. And at the end the bill was only $70! What??? That's about half price of what we would pay in our favorite spot in Cupertino, and this is in a prime Manhattan location right next to 5th Avenue. No, seriously, are you kidding me? I'm ordering lunch from there again today, and I'm probably going back for dinner again tonight. This place is awesome!!!!

It can't be - a reasonably priced Japanese sushi restaurant in Midtown with seats during the prime Saturday dinner rush? It's true at Sushiya! My friend and I grabbed dinner here before seeing a show. Service was excellent as the waitstaff anticipated our needs before we had them. It's nicely decorated inside, and you can see into the kitchen. I enjoyed the chicken tempura, which had a light and crispy coating outside of very tender meat. My friend tried the sweet potato sushi and a shrimp sushi, and enjoyed both. Everything was very fresh. If you have to eat in midtown, this is a nice place, with great service, fresh food and decent prices.

  • Kate T.

If you can't handle the work-hour lunch, you should just bow out of the game. I can't even say that the food is fine - the rice on my rolls was old and stale, my friend's gyoza were barely browned on the bottom but ice cold, and instead of re-firing them, they were nuked and came back sitting exactly as they had been. Our waitress was completely overwhelmed and it took 90 minutes for them to put out two salads, and app, and three roles. #you'redoingitwrong

Solid Sushi place!!! Ordered the sushi sashimi for two and was very pleasantly surprised. They brought us a lot of food, excellent quality and well presented arrangement. Also very reasonably priced. The ambiance and service were good but nothing spectacular.

I have walked past this place for years, but this is the first time I have ever stopped in for lunch. What a wonderful surprise! I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the 3-kinds sashimi lunch for just $17 which is a great value. But get this: for just a dollar more they give you four kinds. That's 16 pieces of sashimi! Imagine my surprise when they also brought out out miso soup and salad! As well as a bowl of rice. I am very impressed. Very friendly and efficient, engaged staff, great value for the money (and the pieces were not skimpy, in fact they were quite generous), quality of the food was great, it was busy but not overcrowded and lastly, it was clean. So for me, it get a solid 4-star rating for a sushi bar lunch.

Tried this place the other day for lunch. This spot gets really busy specially during lunch time, if possible make reservations before coming here. Since it was just two us we opted to seat at the sushi bar. The place is spread across two floors. The sushi bar is where all the sushi action happens, 4-5 Sushi chefs making different kinds of sushi as if they were working in a sushi factory :) I had the miso soup and tried the Dragon roll and Spicy salmon roll. I was expecting the dragon to be more crunchier and big. Taste wise both the rolls were just ok. This is an average establishment with average sushi nothing great about.

Had my first taste of sushi here (and it was pretty darn good, I must say). Came here for lunch with a group & also had the teriyaki chicken, which was also very good. Friendly staff, nice ladies room, no complaints here.

Was in the area and was craving some sushi! Had the sushi for two combo. It was $37 and was decent. I don't know much about sushi to be completely honest with you. I thought it was decent and my friend and I enjoyed it. We came here at around 1pm and it was packed! It was sort of loud but what can you do? It's lunch. I remember when our waitress served us our GIGANTIC plate of sushi!! The table next to us stared in awe. & Of course it came with a mini salad and miso soup! I was going to try the bento boxes they had here but I guess maybe sometime in the future! I mean, the sushi was decent, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't fantastic. This place is an easy 3 stars but they get an extra star because their bathrooms were clean as heck and they refilled our water and tea like.. 7 times. Also, we tried to order more food because we didn't think the sushi combo was enough but our waitress told us not to because it was enough good for the both of us. Usually restaurants wouldn't even care about something like that but I'm glad she warned us because we (at least I was) were full as heck!

This is just one of those places that neither overwhelmed or underwhelmed. It's situated in a good location (Midtown) where I'm always searching for grub after intense shopping. The service was good and it wasn't very crowded during dinner. This place has reasonable prices and standard sushi fare. Would only come back if I'm totally starved and can't make the effort to go anywhere else further.

I had a lovely lunch here with my husband, I had Katsudon - one of my fave dishes and my husband had the sashimi platter. My dish was very authentic, exactly like I have it in Tokyo and the sashimi was OK. Service was speedy and it wasn't expensive. We also didn't need to book to score a table at lunchtime. There are better sushi places around but they are also much more expensive !! We wil be back for the hot food though !!

Good sushi at a great price! Came here for lunch with a friend ob my lunch break since j work in the area. I got the sashimi regular and she had the sushi regular. Both came with miso soup and a salad that came promptly. The fish was fresh and everything was tasty! Enough that I was full but not stuffed. I read previously that it gets busy at lunch but there are two levels so even with no reservations we got right in. I will definitely be back!

Pretty quiet sushi restaurant (maybe it's a big week day lunch spot) that is probably overshadowed by Joe's Shanghai next door. They play random pop 70s-90s music but have the lights really romantically low. It is confused for sure, but the sushi is yumz. The white tuna salad is great, but it's a bit skimpy on the tuna. I love that ponzu sauce! I ended up using it for my sushi instead of the soy sauce. I ended up with the spicy salmon roll and yellowtail scallion roll. No complaints here. A friend also ordered a roll with soybean wrapping (rocket roll?). She really enjoyed that too. Service was polite and efficient. I'd go back :)

Exactly. "Meh, i've experienced better." I know I shouldn't have expected much but I was hoping it was going to be ok+. It was not. Mushy sashimi. However, the Cali rolls that came with my entree was ok - but then again how can a CA roll be bad? Back to expensive (but good!) sushi from the plaza food hall....

Sushiya, I have a soft spot in my heart for you. I had my first date with my boyfriend here three years ago so you get a few extra points. I usually get the sushi for two which comes with a soup and salad. However, I have some gripes. The California Roll had a very small amount of avocado which is just sad. Also, it felt like there was not as much fish and more rice. The spicy mayo was kind of bright pink/orange which was a bit disconcerting. While I will still continue to come here due to the soft spot, I hope you don't go downhill. I think it's a great price for decent sushi in midtown.

Great sushi, friendly staff and very clean restaurant. Also the place has good chi. I ordered three rolls, miso and the house salad. All very good. Highly recommend the king crab roll. At the end they gave us some hot green tea for free...nice touch.

The only reason why I'm giving this restaurant 2 stars and not 1 star is because when we walked out, after they served my son a glass of orange juice, they didn't ask me to pay for it. You see, when ordering a bowl of tempura udon, I asked them to throw in a few of those tiny little pink & white fish cakes. The waitress said, "we're gonna have to charge you a dollar or 2 for that." I said, "that's fine, no problem", but not before my son and I locked our eyes with a mild look of disbelief. But, after ordering the Chirashi (not a cheap dish) I also ordered a yellowtail & avocado hand roll with NO RICE. I was then told that they will charge 2 dollars extra if I get this with NO RICE. I asked them why? I was told that that comes with a little extra fish. I said that I don't want extra fish. The waitress then had to make her way through the nearly EMPTY restaurant (at 7:15pm on a Friday in the heart of Manhattan) and had the manager stop by to tell us that they will still charge me 2 dollars extra. THIS, after I told them that I have been patronizing their establishment for almost 20 years. After 2 more sips of orange juice, I gestured to my son, "we're going. You know what? While I'm writing this, I've changed my mind. Gonna go ahead and change that 1 star. Cheers!

Very casual, basic sushi restaurant. Usual suspects: regular rolls and special rolls (although they are not SUPER special). The sushi ya roll was nothing special, tasted very plain. The March roll was good. The Kelman and Kito rolls were really yummy. Hard to justify going here when Kashi is right around the corner.

  • Greg W.

Very typical sushi place that I randomly tried when in the area. Nothing was bad, nothing was great - everything was A-OK. Pretty standard selection, taste, everything you would expect. Would only go back in right in the immediate area.

  • Keith G.

This place is consistently great. I've been bringing my family here for the past ten years and couldn't be happier with the price and freshness of sushi. There's nothing fancy here but the spicy tuna is amazing and the hand rolls are great too(very traditional). They even make them in soy paper if you ask! My girls often get the tempura udon noodles and even the broth is pretty good to the last drop!

Pretty bad experience when I first visited the pl last wk. understood it was close to their closing time but didn't expect that we'd be rushed as we were. They didn't give us the time to finish (i mean, to enjoy) a quarter of the appetizers we ordered but brought out the entire order at once. I could be okay with that. But with the server who was dying to go home, we didn't even get the soy sauce and had to call her again to ask for the soy sauce bowls. Never had a tuna tartar of that kind. It's just a chunk of spicy tuna with little tempura flakes. Yick. Wouldnt have ordered it if Id known tartar meant a ball of mashed tuna that you throw in to spicy tuna rolls - would rather have ordered a roll instead. It was obvious that the Yellow tail appetizer was pre-made - it was served fully grilled within 5 mins since we ordered it. I was excited to hear that they had uni. Oh well. It still hurts when I think about how much we paid for such old, dry uni pieces that had apparently been out for long. The service was as horrible as their food. Will never revisit there!!! Oh and for all this unpleasant experience, we were charged $110. Crap. What a pricy 35- minute we spent!!! Trust me. I was hungry immediately I left the pl. got wings and french fries at the next door with a pint of guinness - way better choice.

This place haas amazing sushi. We had a bento box lunch, tuna roll, and a combination sushi plate. It came with soup and salad. The meal was very filling. The California roll was amazing because they used ripe avocados. Watching the sushi chefs in action is amazing, they are so fast and make it look so easy. The only thing I noticed about the service was that everyone got wet cloths to wipe their hands before their meal and we didn't. They were attentive about keeping beverages filled, but you never see the same wait staff. The food is good, but they need to use noise absorbing paint. The place is very loud! I could not carry a conversation with the person sitting across from me on the 1st floor of the restaurant. This place is great for the value.

  • Carmen C.

It's really nothing special but is a great lunch spot with reasonable prices. The tables can be a bit tight and gets packed between 12-2 on weekdays. Go for the lunch specials, and pass on any special rolls (as they're not so special).

  • Hector M.

Solid spot for "special" sushi rolls! If I want omakase, I'll go to Sushi Yasuda or Sushi Seki. There's about 30 sushi places in the neighborhood, but their rolls were fresh and surprisingly cheap (4 people for $100 with no alcohol). I went with their Spicy Dragon, Philadelphia, and Spicy Tuna rolls - I'm happier than the Pillsbury Doughboy on his way to a baking convention.

This is my go-to sushi delivery when I have to work late. The delivery is well-packaged and the sushi tastes fresh. I get the deluxe combo, and they are always nice about subbing out the eel for something else. Good value for the money too.

Roll pathetically small but the Sashimi is fat and delicious. I'm torn but with offices around the corner I've been enjoying lunch here for years. It's consistently cheap and good but not impressive. Make it a lunch date with a friend for some quality fish.

We randomly came here after walking through Central Park. Absolutely amazing!!! Lots of business people in for lunch--which always means it's good. We got the spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll. Our friend got the bento box. You get so much stuff with that! Plus you get a salad and a soup. Really cool place on the inside.

I've been coming here for years and it is a terrific neighborhood sushi place. In a city swimming with sushi joints, I love Sushiya because the price is right and it's always easy to grab a table. After dinner, mosey on over to Momofuko Milk Bar at the Chambers Hotel for coffee and tasty desserts!

Good lunch place, not crowded (could be a slow day). Agedashi tofu is good & comes in a sizeable portion with a bit of a spicy kick. Spicy salmon crunch roll was decent but the crunch was probably a bit much. Salmon roe sushi was pretty fresh & the miso soup was decent. A bit on the medium pricey side, maybe due to its location.

    (3)
  • David S.

Decent straightforward sushi house. There was a bit too much rice compared to the fish for my liking but then again everything is priced a good 10-20% lower than most NYC sushi places. They also brought me different rolls than what I ordered but I was so hungry and anxious to eat that I didn't realize until I was done eating. It wasn't a big deal since what they served me were other rolls that I enjoyed but its probably a good idea for restaurants to serve what customers actually order.

Spectacular sushi in an informal setting and at a fair price. The service was excellent . We arrived without a reservation at 6 pm on Friday night . We were seated immediately. It is near MOMA so great spot after or before looking at modern art.

An entire menu page of rainbow rolls, alaska, roll, dragon roll etc. funny names you can think of. Nope, not looking at this page... SKIP! I ordered the 3 maki combo set and it was not bad. I had tuna, yellowtail and california. Sushi was not bad, I am not super impressed, just ok, average. At least it was $12, so the price wasn't bad. I wish it came with miso soup or a salad.

  • Josephine W.

The ambiance makes this place a bit classier and midtown-esque than your average run of the mill cheapo sushi joint, so good for business lunch because you get a little atmosphere. Food was substandard. I had a miso soup, shared a sashimi entree and a premium roll. The roll was almost crunchy in kind of a bad way and completely doused in mayo which I did not like. The sashimi was thick cut but a tad bland... Get what you pay for! Nothing remarkable and not a whole lot to complain about either. Can cure a sushi fix.

  • R. J.

The sushi here is not that good, especially considering the prices and lack of a lunch special. On top of that when I visited this afternoon I was seated at a table next to a door, behind which someone was doing very loud construction. Seats were available elsewhere, where I would not have been bothered by the noise, but they still sat me next to the door. Towards the end of my meal I realized I was sitting in a cloud of dust that had come in from underneath the door. It was pretty disgusting. Nobody apologized or offered me anything, even when I moved to another table to wait for my check. I would not recommend bothering to eat at this place. It's nothing special and sushi from the grocery store or bodega is on par.

Cannot fully give a 5-star rating because I only dropped by here once for lunch and tasted only 2 of their wide selection of rolls. The other star is lost due to some of their prices being a bit too high. I grabbed a Spicy Dragon Roll and a Crunchy Spicy Spider Roll and added Edamame to go and my bill was over $30.. ouch! However, the food was excellent and afterwards I checked out their full menu and they do have some regular rolls between $5-9 each, which isn't too bad. the place was packed and very clean to they get good marks for that. Service was polite and fast as well.

had the nabeyaki udon which was delicious. the soup was good. but could use a bit more flavoring. it was a big portion too. we were just walking around looking for sushi. my other friend had some of the rolls. they were pretty good. my friend had the oyakodon and she didn't really like it though. a bit dry and not as flavorful. recommend to come here for the rolls. other things are not the best i had. however, the price is decent not too bad for nyc standards.

Cute and clean sushi spot for those who want to have a good sushi in a nice atmosphere without breaking the bank. Unpretentious decor, quiet spot filled with local clientele that delivers inexpensive fresh sushi. Nothing to rave about I definitely had a good time enjoying their sushi combo and bottle of Nigori (unfiltered =amazing). Exceptional service- attentive and warm. Translate the experience into a Faceook lingo=Like.

Had the eel don and the bass (appetizer). Dined in. Service was not that attentive, but I think they just haven't learned how to multi-task well yet. The ambiance is actually pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised. Came with miso and salad which was good. The bass was really, really, really good. If you are dining in, you really should try it. The quality/presentation is phenomenal. The eel was also great quality. Tummy was happy. Yay!

Fast, friendly service. Typical New York sushi menu (not necessarily a bad thing) in a clean, pleasant setting. Prices are reasonable.

I called and asked if they had maki roll combo specials for lunch and the lady said yes, but when I got there... there weren't any. Service was very slow during the lunch rush. We got the last table at 1:05. The rolls are very small and I thought the spicy tuna was a little off color - more red/magenta than the usual orange I am used to. My friend liked her sashimi and the miso soup was fine. I'll stick to Kiku on 55th St.!

This is the second time from Sushiya something has happened. I tried giving them the benefit of the doubt the first time, but nope, they did me wrong again. Being that there aren't many Japanese restaurants by my office, I decided to take a chance and go for Sushiya. The first time I went there I ordered the beef negimaki appetizer (which was actually good) and a spicy salmon roll. Being that it was lunch and I "ordered two things," I got a free miso soup. I come back to my office, eat the beef, and move on to my sushi. As I'm on one of the last few pieces, I pick it up with my chopsticks, and right from under the sushi is a staple! A STAPLE! Someone could cut the inside of their mouth or get really sick from ingesting that. Right then and there I stopped eating it and ate the miso soup instead. Now, today comes around, I ordered a spicy tuna roll this time. Again, u get to the fourth to last piece, put it in my mouth, and swallow most of it, but my teeth keep chewing something. What was it? A PIECE OF PLASTIC. WHY?? Why do they feel the need to add inedible objects to their food? They get an A as their food rating, which I keep trying to understand in my mind. This will be the last time I try eating their food. Shame on them the first time, but shame on me the second time.

Love this place! I order from them all the time. They make some of the best sushi I've had and their prices are very reasonable. Try the grilled salmon roll! Delish!

A little overpriced but the quality of fish, especially the salmon, is consistently good. If you want an appetizer, I highly recommend the tuna tar tar. The san shoku sashimi lunch set is very good. If you're ordering a take out lunch set be sure to phone in your order, if you place the same order on seamless, they will exclude the miso soup/salad... If you're dining at the restaurant, I would ask for a seat upstairs. The sushi for two and sashimi for two are good if you and your mate are hungry, and they served on a pretty neat wooden arch platter.

The good: - Uni - Hamachi - Aji The forgettable: - Shiro mutsu - Kampachi (probably the blandest I've ever had) The bad: - No toro - That crazy yellowtail roll with jalepenos (why do I do these things??) Overall, not terrible and a place I'll go to when I'm in a hurry and in the area, but it's not a place I'd go out of my way to go to.

I have gone here a few times with my co-workers and love it. Both times had the Box special that is amazing and reasonably priced comes with a salad and soup. For $16.00 bucks it's well worth it. Lunch time its packed but you you are taking care of rather quickly . I am a Fan.

Overall, not impressed. I ordered to go and they were quick. However, tuna tartare was less then impressive. Spicy salmon was ok. Spider roll was overcooked! Crunchy yellowtail was awful.

The fish and avocado were fresh. The eel sauce was a bit salty and watery. The rice was a little old. Good service the water was always filled.

Stayed at a midtown hotel so ordered delivery sushi once but the fish was just not that tasty it wasn't bad but it wasn't good that satisfy your sushi craving. But then I was hungry and standing right in front of it.. so got myself a bowl of katsu don, that was very good. Crunchy fried pork cutlet served over rice with a egg and dashi broth sauce all over. Hmmm, the rice soaks up all the sauce. So that's it. Go there for lunch, but don't expect great sushi.

On way to lunch at Sushiya: "Dude, what's with the really long line of people on 56th?" "That's the line for the Abercrombie & Fitch store." "For Abercrombie?!" "Europeans and Midwesterners." "Ohh, that figures." So keep walking past the tourist hordes, business suits, and good-looking A&F employees until you reach Sushiya, smack in the middle of the block. Sushiya's menu has all the standard dishes found at a typical Japanese restaurant. You've got the sushi bar items such as sushi specials, sushi a la carte, regular and special rolls; and there are kitchen dishes like chicken teriyaki, donburi and udon noodles. For lunch, I usually get the box special with chicken teriyaki, California roll, sushi/sashimi, edamame, dumplings, miso soup and salad. The quality of the food is good and most importantly the fish is fresh (nothing is worse than a sushi restaurant with nasty fish). The service isn't amazing, but it's sufficient and you'll get your food and check in a timely manner with lunch running $15-20 per person. Overall, Sushiya is a decent Japanese restaurant, but it doesn't stand out in a good or bad way. Just make sure to avoid the tourists scrambling to get in line at A&F.

Ok I was on business in New York and got really tired of eating some really bad and salty food chosen by the people I was with and also very tired of eating at the hotel...so one night I set off on my own and tried this place that was recommended by the concierge at the hotel I was staying at. I was pleasantly surprised! The rolls were really quite good (perhaps a little on the small side but very tasty all the same!) The prices were reasonable and the service was so good! Everyone from the host to the waitresses and the actually sushi-makers were really great! The atmosphere was cozy but not too crowded. Take a friend for a little sushi...

I was in the city over the weekend and my niece wanted to have sushi before we left. A friend of mine did some research and found this place, which was super close to our hotel. If you are not looking for the place it may be hard to miss, but make sure you find it, its worth it! Spicy -- Crab Shumai (crab dumplings) They were very tasty. Philadelphia Roll, Shrimp Dragon Roll -- very fresh My niece and friend both loved their sushi. Good amount and decent prices Medium -- The service -- it was okay but I felt a bit rushed. We got there shortly after 9 on a Saturday and soon into our meal the waitress was asking us if we wanted anything else because the kitchen was closing. Mild -- Edamame -- usually comes out with salt, in this case they gave us the salt shaker. They were bland and they could have stayed in the steamer a little longer, they were a bit hard. Overall it was a good experience, the decor is nice and the lighting is great! If you are in NYC and want sushi this is a place to check out.

Fish and sushi quality are delicious. Service is god awful. Slow as could be, and took over 5 minutes to get my drinks because the waitress forgot my order, twice. If you have all day, go for the quality of food.

Overall, I'm not particularly impressed by the taste of the sushi rolls. I've had much better but it is decent and the service is quick. Though I was very satisfied with the tempura appetizer both times I went there, so I'd suggest it if you are in the mood for that! Be warned though that around lunch time it's very crowded and loud and the staff tends to rush you a bit.

I have tried almost every Japanese restaurant in the theatre district and Sushiya is a definite stand-out. I ordered a dragon and a rainbow roll as appetizers and the unagi rice bowl as an entree. The rolls were fresh and chunky. I gobled up the warm, moist eel. (My love for the delicacy stems from this place.) As a general note, the food is well-priced and arrives nicely decorated. The turn-off: At the end of the meal, the waitress came by to clear our plates and stood shocked over my empty dishes: "Most people just order the unagi and can barely finish it. But you.." I dislike it when people (especially servers) comment on my food consumption. Tempting to give this place less than four stars out of spite, but... it was just too good.

It was another day of wandering, and I decided to try out this place. It is pretty affordable, and they (like many other sushi places) have both the regular rolls and some of their chef created rolls. I enjoyed my meal here, under romantic candlelit lighting (lol). The sushi was fresh, the place was nice and clean, and the service was great. I'd say they'll be in my future if sushi calls my name in that neighborhood again. =]

Good sushi and not bad prices. No lunch specials though. I had a crazy craving for sushi since i left my lunch at home so I went around 1:30pm. The place was not that crowded, I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the Tuna, Eel Avocado and Rainbow roll. They brought me a Miso soup and salad with ginger dressing while I waited (If i would have known soup/salad was included, I would have ordered 1 less roll) but it came out rather quick, say 10 minutes wait time total. I got a diet coke, but no refill. but I did get a nice warm damp towel to wipe my hands so that was nice. The sushi was good and the fish seemed fresh, with the exception of the Eel. Something about it was just not right. My tuna roll was more than just rice, which is nice to get a good portion for sushi. Overall, it was not a bad place, but I've had better.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I am very picky when it comes to sushi. A coworker raves about this place and finally convinced me to give it shot. The waitstaff is wonderful. There is plenty of space so you don't feel crowded like many sushi places make you feel. We didn't have a tremendous amount of time so we just ordered a few of our favorite rolls, some edamame, and green tea. The price was great for the quality. I will definitely come back.

Always incredibly fresh. I've been going for over a decade, and I'm loyal. Really delicious. They shouldn't have taken Sukiyaki off the menu though. My favorite is the sushi sashimi combo. Lovely ambiance.

You get what you pay for in most instances. This neighborhood is universally overpriced. Its hard to find a lunch deal that will cost you less than ten bucks for not-so-good food. Sushiya is overpriced even by these standards. The food was bland, generic and not so fresh. I would rather be at Sapporo in the east village. But alas, here I am in Midtown shleping through like the rest of us. Its not that Sushiya is such a bad deal. Its just Midtown, baby. A place without a soul.

I have lunch here once every couple of months with a friend; the sushi is always reliable and fresh. Service is quick and friendly, most days. Big with the midtown lunch crowd; more of a co-workers than client place.

I'm a sushi SNOB and let me assure you that the sashimi here is fresh. I've eaten here twice and ordered it out five times. That's impressive for someone who rarely revisits restaurants, if I might say so myself. This is my line up for sushi around in the 50's and 60's: Sushiya (mid), Sushi-a-Go-Go (west), and Sushi Seki (east). They're the best for this price range ($15-$20), hands down.

My friend and I stopped into Sushiya last night while walking down 56th Street in the rain. The window looked inviting, and we saw a crowd of people outside overlooking the menu. "I think I've been here before," said my friend. And since I'm familiar with his high brow palate, I thought it would be good idea to escape the rain and enjoy a nice dinner there. It was a rainy Sunday evening, so it wasn't that busy, which made the experience pleasant. The ambiance was lovely - low-lighting, dark hardwood floors with matching tables and booths, soft music. We were seated immediately and picked out our food items quickly after. I ordered the yellowtail scallion roll, the hot chili yellowtail roll, and the hot ocean roll. My friend ordered the rocky mountain roll, the rainbow roll, 2 pieces of eel sushi and a sea urchin. All in all, every ounce of fish was soft, fresh, and wonderfully delicious! We both washed our dishes down with a glass of plum wine, which was sweet, yet not overpowering, and a lovely end to our dinner. The only reason I'm not giving Sushiya 5 stars is that the service was a tad slow, even for a half empty restaurant. Other than that, they served up some of the best sushi I have ever tasted.

Stopped in after passing it randomly -- looked cute and not crowded. Service was good, attentive (until it came to getting the check, like everywhere else in NYC). Food: Miso Soup -- better than others I've had Edamame -- it's edemame... Sushi - had the Spicy Dragon 2 roll, it was very good. All in all, I recommend this place for those looking for a low-key but nice dinner not too far from Times Square. Prices were reasonable/average.

What do you do when you're starving in midtown and running late to a movie? Probably not go to Sushiya. It's not that the food was bad (it wasn't) or the service was slow (it wasn't), rather it was unmemorable and expensive. Sure, you're paying midtown prices for downtown fish. But you're also emptying your wallet on a forgettable meal in a forgettable neighborhood. Best to stick to street meat and get some better grub post-movie. Nothing to see here.

Very nice Japanese restaurant. I've had Tempura as a starter and Chirashi sushi to follow. Both were very quickly prepared. The Tempura was very good to my taste: the shrip and veggies were crispy and served very warm. The sushi was also excellent, the fish very fresh and the presentation precise and beautiful as it should be. The only disappointment is that instead of crabmeat, as the menu says, the dish offered surimi which is fish "rolls" that are crab-flavored. A small point also is that even if the service is quick, polite and precise, it really lacked some smiling and warmth. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality of food, the nice restaurant setting and the neighborhood.

We had but 30 minutes to eat before dashing over to catch a preview of the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince movie. The small theatre was only a block away from this place, and since my sister and I both love sushi we figured that we might as well try Sushiya out. The interior is very dark (I wonder if its always that way), which makes it a little eerie from the outside. We weren't sure they were opened until we started to walk in, and the hostess immediately appeared, pulled out menus and sat us down. The service was extremely attentive; no sooner had we been seated when our waitress had us ordering drinks, and would periodically check to see if we were ready to order. A little annoying when you're trying to make a decision, but nice to not be ignored. We shared edamame (good, but what do you expect?), shrimp gyoza (quite tasty but nothing special), and two special rolls: The Grilled Salmon (cooked salmon, crunchy inside; avocado, mango, red pepper, eel sauce, red pepper sauce outside) and the Sunny Side (spicy tuna & yellowtail with asparagus, tobiko). Both were good, but I didn't care for the Grilled Salmon - something about cooked fish in sushi just doesn't do it for me, but my sister loved it. The Sunny Side was a little more my thing. They do have a fair number of interesting special rolls that include mussel, but I couldn't convince my sister to try them. The fish is quite fresh, and the presentation lovely - I'm glad they keep the amount of rice minimal and cut the pieces to sizes that aren't impossible to place into your mouth. Prices are also reasonable for everything, about the same you would pay at any sushi place around the city. Sushiya is a decent place to get moderately priced sushi when you're in the area. Its not a place I would seek out again, but if I'm around there and need a bite to eat I would probably drop by instead of searching out another place.

The service was fast and courteous. However, the California rolls were much smaller than I've had previously. They were of average price ($4.50) and average taste. Next time I want a quick sushi lunch, I'll probably try another spot.

I love Sushiya. And I've eaten sushi all over the world. And yes, I've had near religious experiences eating fresh uni in Maui. Now, I'm not at Sushiya eating uni (haven't even gone there), and if I wanted to be dazzled and entertained this would not be the place. But I head here for sushi sashimi for two crowded on that wooden moon bridge to satiation, a couple bottles of sake and great company (my honey). And the price is crazy reasonable and the sushi is fresh. The staff has always been on time and helpful, keeping water glasses and sake cups filled. It can get loud. I recommend eating early or late when the din is more subdued.

Very fresh sushi, definitely a top pick for quality and freshness. Courteous staff, good selection of appetizers, sushi, sashimi, and maki rolls. A bit lacking in appealing special rolls as well as decor. Place closes early - 2:30pm so do not expect dinner service.

I've experienced a rash of bad service at sushi places recently, but this really took the cake. I was seated quickly and handed a menu, and then five seconds later a waitress came over and said "You order now." Um, OK. I had a crunchy spicy scallop roll and the rocky mountain roll. Both were pretty uninspiring. The scallop roll was too spicy and I couldn't taste the scallop at all. The point of the spicy roll is to accent the flavor, not kill it, or so I have always thought. The Rocky Mountain roll was just mush, I can't even remember what was in it. Overall, very disappointing. Before I even had the last piece in my mouth, the plate was snatched from my table and a check placed promptly in front of me. Getting rushed in, through, and out of my meal? Thanks but no thanks. Two stars for not giving me sushi poisoning, but that's really about it.

Final fantasy roll!? I thought that was a ps3/xbox 360 exclusive! Jk, that probably was the most expensive but one of the most delicious rolls I've had and trust me... I've scoured the sushi scene throughout the bay area (CA) and Vegas! Nice texture and flavor! My only gripe was that the portions were a tad small for food to cost ratio. Ambiance was nice with intimate lighting and decor, staff was friendly and courteous. I also ordered sake sashimi which was a milli times fresher than the air in NYC, a delicious yet simple spicy yellowtail roll and a nigori de creme sake that gave me the buzz I needed to kick off my NYC trip... Thanks to the other yelpers that helped me find this place after my search for sake bar hagi was a total utter fail due to their abrupt closure. KAMPAI!!!

I had sashimi delivered to my hotel (too tired to venture out after a long work day). The hostess that took the phone order was neither friendly nor patient. But the food arrived in less than 20 minutes, and it was fresh and tasty. Especially the salmon - it practically melt in my mouth. Definitely more than I expected based on the price!

This place is b/w a 3 and a 4, went ahead w/ the four b/c the current rating of 3 doesn't do this place justice, it was good sush, two rolls and a miso for around $10 or $11, not amazing prices and not AMAZING sush, but pretty respectable, very much liked the spicy salmon crunch roll, I definitely reccomend it.

The good: Convenient location Moderate prices Decent service Clean, modern decor The bad: Terribly mediocre food ("Marginally better than going hungry") The details: I used to think Sushiya was a reliable midtown standby. I'm not sure if my tastes have evolved, or if the restaurant has really deteriorated. I think it's the latter. Sushiya has become one of those generic, unremarkable Japanese restaurants that I dislike so much. I had loved the restaurant because of its midtown location (on 56th Street, down the street from Harry Winston and near Bergdorf's) and its simple menu. The bento box dinners sound like a great deal (used to be $12 years ago, now raised to $15) - and they would be, if the quality of the contents were great. Or even good. Unfortunately what was in the box was wildly mediocre - the shrimp tempura, when deconstructed, had shrimp as skinny as pencils (hmm - bought in bulk as premade, frozen, then fried?), barely hot gyoza (there is nothing worse than getting something that should be warm...cold)...you get the message. Also ordered at the table were the beef negamaki (which was cold) and sushi (which was tasteless). The verdict: Should have spent the extra few dollars for Nobu 57 instead. Nothing I hate more than spending money on a mediocre meal.

I really had high hopes of this place, but came out very disappointed. The tuna and the octopus sashimi was OK and fresh, but the maki rolls however were a whole different story (even the spicy tuna rolls were not spicy at all, and the boston rolls were nasty). They all tasted the same, and it seemed as if some of them were refrigerated. Sorry, but I cannot understand how this place can be "zagat rated".

  • Jannie Q.

It gets 1 star for the location, since it's walking distance from my hotel. It gets another 1 star for the prices in this neighborhood. The 3rd star is for the service. Otherwise, I wouldn't go back here. There is a mildew smell as we walked through the door. Not sure why. The place wasn't carpeted or anything. Don't know where the smell came from -- and probably don't want to find out. The food was mediocre. I've tasted better gyozas, shrimp siumai, and spider rolls. It was pretty cheap though so I guess it's the tradeoff.

After seeing a show at Carnegie Hall, just wanted to find a place to eat with no particular cuisine in mind. I stumbled upon this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised! It was towards closing time so the place was quiet. We got a table, waited on and served with great speed. The staff is lovely, this is a large restaurant with a great ambiance and VERY clean (including the bathroom which to me says a lot about a restaurant's kitchen cleanliness as well). My sashimi entree was absolutely delicious! Nice thick pieces of fish and fresh! I'm giving Sushiya 5 stars for my overall experience: friendly staff, awesome sashimi, nice big clean restaurant and VALUE! I've read a couple of reviews from people who thought Sushiya was over priced. All I can say is HARDLY! I've been to many sushi restaurants and I enjoyed an amazing dinner for way less than I expected in this area of Manhattan and other Japanese restaurants that are no comparison to Sushiya. The menu is relatively reasonable (dinner for two: 2 sashimi dinners, 2 appetizers and 2 sakis the bill was under $50) I'd be happy to visit sushiya again!

Sushiya is packed during lunch hours, but with an upstairs seating area, it's great for groups large or small and service is fast and friendly. Prices are definitely not wallet friendly at this midtown location so expect to spend around $15 for one of their bento boxes, sushi/sashimi lunch specials, or udon noodles. Miso soup and salad with ginger dressing came with my sushi special, and even though the fish wasn't the freshest I've had, it was a pretty fulfilling meal!

just had dinner here and thought it was FANTASTIC. i was a little weary b/c we have GOOD sushi back home, but was open to try. their rolls are good with not too much rice so it was made the way i liked it. ordered the deluxe sashimi dish ($20) not too bad and the rish was fresh and cut well (nice & thick). we also had like 8 different rolls.... i could probably butcher the names and not be able to explain what was in them... there was this chilly jalapeno yellowtail rolls... i highly recommend it if you can handle spicy. it has a thin slice of jalapeno on top of it... some of the rolls were wrapped in this tortilla-looking thing, but it had this nice texture to it (maybe that's why there wasn't that much rice....) we ended with the tempura ice cream and mochi ice cream. the mochi ice cream halves were kind of small... as if the chefs just ate the middles and put the ends on the plate... the tempura ice cream was doughy and floury... eh, not impressed. service was pretty good, quick and very patient with us. the restaurant was nice... there is an upstairs that was empty, too. it was our first sushi restaurant in the city, so we'll see if we ever want to check it out again or if it'll be pushed down our list of sushi joints in the city.

i was trying to order sake and asked the waitress for opinion, i guess it was during their busy lunch rush hour, the manager actually came over and told the waitress not to talk to us about it and just let us decide. i was embarrassed and so i told them i will order later. how terrible and rude. lunch service was quick and efficient. the sashimi i ordered the portion was much smaller than my friend's portion, we thought maybe because i am a girl and they don't think i can eat much so they reduced the portion. soft shell crab was a bit hard and dry. after i got home i had bad stomach and had to go to bathroom. i guess the food was not fresh. in the end, there was nothing memorable. it was just a place to grab quick lunch, but there are many japanese restaurants in the same area, this one is definitely not up to the standard as the others in the same area are better easily. and i am not coming back.

kitaro on the upper west has a better overstuffed umeshiso handroll, but at least sushiya makes them (surprisingly, i've encountered a few japanese restaurants that refuse this order which is like refusing the mayo on my fries, the butter on my popcorn, and the jelly with my roasted honey nut extra crunchy peanut butter!) and the chirashi for a workday midtown lunch delivery is a satisfying meal complete with miso soup and salad and good bang for the buck at this slightly overpriced portion to cost ratio of a japanese restaurant! for delivery, be sure to mention that you want chopsticks or yes, gasp, they will forget them and if you ask for low sodium soy sauce, it will come all poured out in little saran wrapped plastic cups that are much easier to maneuver than those irritatingly impossible to open and one is never enough hermetically sealed tinfoil packets!

I was staying at a hotel in midtown and so went here for lunch. It was packed for lunch. I got a bento box and it was good. I didn't get sushi and so I can't really judge how good this place was. The staff is friendly and the ambience is good.

i went today for lunch, you know, to test out sushiya because i needed a break from my routine and partially because i have my set sushi restaurant that i go to for lunch. and if i don't try more new places for lunch, how will i ever know that i'm wisely spending my measly hour, gastronomically speaking of course. the restaurant was pretty busy during lunch. the decor is nice. it's very fancy inside for a place that's located off 5th ave on, what i think, to be a very dumpy street. there are nasty puddles of a mixture of stagnant water, antifreeze, bird doo and who knows what else. i had the maki combo which came with miso soup and salad, all for $11. the dressing on my salad looked inordinately dark orange not that lovely pale orange that hinted of freshly made. the salad dressing had a similar appearance to ice cream that's sat out too long at your local ice cream parlor. it dulls in color, loses flavor and develops this not so tasty skin. the miso soup was passable...miso paste, water, seaweed, tofu; you can't mess up simple miso soup. the sushi combo was interesting. california roll made with Krab, to be expected, tuna roll and yellowtail with scallions. i think we must've hit the restaurant before their fresh delivery of fish because the tuna and yellowtail rolls had a bit of the "je ne sais crois", an added level of flavor that was unexpected. it felt like there was a drunken shindig in my mouth and before the guests left they all puked up in it. i now know to stick with my regular restaurant, where this really cute japanese woman knows me and my order...hot tea with hokkai donburi, no spicy sauce. fresh fresh fresh! and definitely no je ne sais crois.
