OMG, what would I do without Gastronomie. I needed a quick dinner the other night so instead of my usual chicken francaise with roast potatoes and kale that I ADORE from Gastronomie, I decided to try a warm sandwich. Had the best house turkey with sliced apples (who knew?), on fantastic rye, lettuce and tomato and the great dressing they use - perfectly "grilled". Couldn't even eat it right away and the bread didn't get soggy. The turkey was fresh and chemical filled meat that usually substitutes for sliced turkey, and the counter staff couldn't have been nicer. I really hope this place succeeds because I am such a selective eater, and I've been on the Upper West for years, and Gastronomie is the best. Not overpriced either. My luscious sandwich even came with a small fresh salad with excellent fresh salad dressing. Bravo Gastronomie. Madelyn H

The cheese plate was DELICIOUS and it's a huge portion for its price. I can't wait to go back for some more. :)

Really overpriced but it's the UWS. That said, friendly staff and some delicious smelling teas. Also the macarons were yummy as were some of their other pastries. If I'm in that part of the hood again, it wouldn't be shocking if I dropped by.

Gastronomie is THE gourmet deli, bakery, cafe, supermarket all-in-one. The foods taste delicious, the variety is extremely expansive and everyone is nice to talk to. A great spot in the neighborhood.

Very good for brunches. The three egg omelette with chicken apple sausages is very good.

we had breakfast here recently. the atmosphere is very pleasant. prices are high. the OJ was very tasty. my daughter ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes. took forever. then they were burned. we sent them back only to receive a second order slightly less burned. kind of ruined the morning.

I came across Gastronomie 491 when ordering a fast and easy dinner option from Seamless. While in the mood for something healthy that did not break the bank, I came across their menu. A full 3 lb rotisserie chicken with salad and new potatoes for 14 bucks? How could I get so lucky? We also ordered the Palermo Laffa Pizza - light but wonderfully flavorful! This will be a go to delivery option for that rotisserie chicken meal...

Gastronomie covers a lot of territory in it's space. It's a bakery, a coffee-shop, a grocery, a craft beer and wine seller, a cheese and cured meat shop, a sandwich place, and a restaurant. The interior is gorgeous and really well arranged - easy to stroll through and roomy. All the items being sold are top quality from the dry goods to the cheese and everything in between. Many of the foods being sold are of local origin. I found extracts that I haven't seen before in the neighborhood and a top quality maple syrup that I would throw down good money for. That being said, everything costs good money - Gastronomie is not cheap. Some of their sandwiches I saw were posted between 8 and 11 dollars which is typical for a non-deli sandwich in these parts but you can see the dollar signs creeping up on everything else. I think I'll probably frequent them for a croissant or some of the breads I saw being sold (zatar laffa! Tom Cat brioche!), or a sandwich, and also probably for specialty items I can't find elsewhere. But I probably won't be doing my weekly shopping here because even though my stomach might love me I think my wallet would leave me for it.

I really like this restaurant. It's not as good as Fairway, but it is a vast improvement of everything else available in this location. The place has an amazing layout - a restaurant, cheese counter, another breakfast bar type restaurant, coffee station and dessert station! The other thing is the food is not loaded with salt and butter - it's healthier than some of the tastier food in the area and the perfect place if you want a snack but don't feel like cooking. Also, they always have a delicious sandwich of the day. The only complaint I have is that I was waiting for my sandwich to be made, and then someone asked me something like "your still here?" Um, I was waiting for my sandwich and looking around the store... Maybe they were surprised it wasn't made yet.. Well, the service could be better but I still rate it 5 stars because it is a terrific asset to the neighborhood. The grocery is not unreasonably expensive, given that they appear to pick through the fruits and vegetables and only display the ones that are best to eat.

We had an early and lite pre-movie dinner here last night. My wife had an Athena and I had the Parma. Both are sandwiches. Both sandwiches were large and delicious. They also came with a great little salad. We tried to buy the dressing, but found out that it is made in their kitchen and is not for sale. They have a great tea selection and a very nice selection of cakes and a rather varied selection of somewhat random groceries. I look forward to returning.

I had the mezze platter delivered and it was awesome. Great portions, delivery time was speedy, and flavors were robust and spot on. Definitely will order again.

This place is surprisingly great. It looks like a market/deli from the front, but there is table service in the back and the food is delicious! The service was a little slow, but our server was just lovely, and after we paid the bill we sat and talked for 45 mins and no one ever rushed us. What a delightful find.

Gastronomie essentially divides into two things: CAFE and GROCER, but its owners have subdivided it further (six different cafe/take-out menus, including prix fixe brunch and afternoon tea). My experience has been quite lopsided so far; my three stars probably exaggerate the better elements. The short story is that the grocery aspect is significantly overpriced, and the cafe isn't always so great at combining their evidently expensive ingredients -- but they do choose their items well. My general impression after a few visits is that I probably won't keep coming back to figure out what's actually worth it, even though it's all very "high class." I'd rather they just do a few things well at these prices. Speaking of which... the cheeses are out of this world, at least pricewise. The "craft beers" are somewhat interesting (small selection, pretty well chosen) but significantly marked up from other retail outlets. Sixpoint beers, for instance, are 60% above suggested retail. You'll find similar markups elsewhere, including the vegetables and even the simple crackers. This grocery store has restaurant prices. So why pretend to be a grocer? Lazy. I pay those prices when I sit down to eat somewhere, not when I'm picking up ingredients. They do certain things right: the plates, paninis, by-the-pound stuff, and if you obsess over good cheeses and tomatoes and would trade off being cheated over hunting for them, then there you go. (p.s., there is a mom-and-pop grocer just down the street between 83rd and 82nd with much better prices for good veggies.) Final words of advice: avoid the awful "pan bagnat" sandwiches. The bread dominates these dry mounds, and they seem overly skimpy on the meat and cheese. You can taste the price gouging.

Gotta try to the turkey burger with feta! Out of this world! Also great for brunch - try the french toast and/or pancakes.

Food quality adequate. Service terrible. Cafe section was empty except for two ladies having coffee and chatting. I stood around by the 'please wait to be seated' sign for several minutes before one of the staff members (there were three) asked if I was waiting. Service was crazy slow - 27 minutes for a simple sandwich after I ordered it. I was told the chef had put it on the panini grill and forgotten about it. Of course, this means my server forgot about it too, since she never paid me a visit during that entire duration. Not cool.

  • Christine K.

I highly recommend this place - it's got a little bit of everything! The charcuterie selection was great - took some time to sample their large assortment of cheese as well. The service was really helpful and willing to answer the questions that I had. Will definitely come back for lunch/dinner/snack!

Breakfast took forever to arrive, and when it did the order was all wrong. During our twenty minute wait (for eggs and coffee, and we were the only customers at the counter) we watched lots of industrial-sized cans of vegetables being opened and assembled into "fresh" salads. Eating at the counter has the ambience of a cheap corner deli, with none of the efficiency, and at twice the price. Why oh why didn't I go to Lenny's????

It's a cute neighborhood one-stop shopping place for when you're having company or just want something yummy and pretty. Love the zatar laffa, which I hadn't had since actually being in Israel. Really great cookies and perfect fruit tarts and florences. Yes, it's expensive, so yes, it's an occasional treat-- except for the laffa-- I'm already an addict.

Hey! My first one-star review. Bold prediction: This place will be out of business within six months. We walked up to the counter to order a couple of rice balls (which were actually surprisingly awful) and the guy behind the counter was standing there texting. Went on to finish up his text (a good 20-30 seconds) before he bothered to look up and help us. Sorry to bother you, sir. It won't happen again.

This bright and cheery cafe on the UWS fits in perfectly in the neighborhood. It is truly a European style place; feels just like being abroad. I found some of my favorite brands from Europe that I have never been able to find in the US. There is an illy coffee bar too, with space to sit down if you want. My favorite part is the restaurant though. Everything on the menu is delicious, don't miss the french toast during breakfast or brunch.

This review is for Sunday brunch - perfect! Reasonable price, friendly service, and most of all excellent food! We had the Moroccan eggs and the Swiss potato rosti, both great and different from the usual fare. Illy coffee. Yum!

  • Sunny C.

I think I like this place more than I'd care to admit. Sometimes they act rather pretentious, which I find annoying, their grocery prices are ridiculous, and it really and truly annoys me that they keep the milk & half and half behind the counter. Cuz when I order coffee and ask for a little half & half, they put too much in it. And when I ask for milk, too little. Just let me make my own, yeah? That rant having been made, their ham & cheese croissant is terrific. Flaky croissant, just the right amount of ham & cheese... yum yum. Those witches brownies are devilishly good, the illy coffee is terrific, and so far the 2 panini's I've had have been quite tasty. So it's definitely a "better than avg" place.

Gastronomie 491 has a wonderful selection of foods and the brunch is delicious, but I don't know that I've experienced poorer service. The first time we went for brunch was a disaster and today, the woman in front of me was already commenting on how long it was taking for the cream cheese to be brought up for her bagel. I knew this was a bad sign. When I ordered, the employee dropped the knife on the floor, rinsed it quickly (no soap or anything) and proceded to use it. Needless to say, I did not eat what I had ordered and will have a hard time going back.

  • Sepide N.

It's a small place with a nice atmosphere. I had no idea they offer a wide variety of selections to choose from. I started off with the la Mediterranea soup which was very delicious. The prosciutto is a must-try also! It a little bit pricey but definitely worth it.

Living just around the corner for several years, I've been coming to Gastronomie a lot, being very patient with their half-asleep style of service (always so slow). Didn't even run out of patience after the waiter spilled a full tray of coffees and mimosas on me once (no, they were not comped). But today they really win the worst service award of the UWS. I waited for 2 hrs for my seamless order (my apt is literally 2 mins away walking). For the first hour and a half the voice on the phone kept assuring me the order is on its way, only to tell me after 2 hours they don't have my order in the system (I did have confirmation from seamless). But the worst part of it - there was no apology for making me wait 2 hours for nothing, instead after I asked to explain how come they said twice before that the order is on the way, they just hung up on me. Ouch!

I've been here for a couple of work-related lunches. The environment inside is not really the greatest for dining. It can be relatively peaceful (which is nice), but there aren't a lot of tables to choose from and it tends to be warm/stuffy in there. The service has been slow and unreliable on the times I've been there. I think sometimes they are understaffed, but the "main" server comes by infrequently and sometimes you end up having to get another worker's attention if you need something. The cheese plate is decent. Overall the food seems fine at Gastronomie, but improvements in staffing and atmosphere would be welcomed. (By me, anyway.)

I'm a total fan of this spot! I've tried different paninis there and liked them all. Everything tastes so fresh and flavorful. I definitely plan to swing by here to get meals to go when I don't feel like cooking dinner. They have pastas, paninis, vegetables, sides (truffle mac and cheese) and desserts. They have fun lemonades and various drinks from Italy. Also, they have a lot of different cheeses that they'll allow you to sample. It certainly helps making a purchase easier since there are so many options. In addition, they have many craft beer options. They have a sit down brunch too. Yesterday, I noticed they started serving gelato. I haven't tried it yet. If you appreciate the cute lunch spots in Italy, then this place will be sure to please!

Cute little place - Just popped in for some gelato. I really wanted some cantelope gelato (like I had in Italy) but no luck. I ended up with what they called a yogurt gelato (i would call it froyo) It was some sort of orange flavor. Pretty good. Not what I wanted but hey - it was 85 out - I was hot. Looking around - they did have some good looking pastries and what not. Store was very attractive. I'd go back to taste what else they had.

What was once an amazing fresh efficient place now is a mess. every single delivery order has been wrong, and currently I've been waiting a literal hour and a half for my meal! This is one of those situations where every time you order from them you are given a reason to remember why you had to stop

I went in for a quick coffee and croissant. If you know anything about me, I like me a scrumptious croissant. With that said, it was just the right size with the buttery and flaky taste. I will need to revisit the place to comment on the rest of their baked goods and other menu items.

This place is very good. We ordered the Brooklyn panini and a cheese plate with beef prosciutto. It came with crackers, olives, and roasted red peppers. The panini was delicious and so was the cheese plate. Only downside is that they choose the cheese, If you don"t know anything about cheese and order the cheese plate; you may get something you don't like. A lot of the cheeses are very strong and different. This place is a tad bit over priced but yummy.

After a year's experience with them, I'm somewhat disappointed. They are expensive but the quality is not commensurate: nearly expired milk, tiny portions of gelato, and subpar customer service. Their business model is a high end deli while they try to enforce "restaurant" standards: The outside area is for table service only-- and they don't let customers sit even when tables are empty. They lost a frequent customer with this tactic.

UPDATE: After the previously mentioned incident earlier this week, where a breakfast order took an hour, I am happy to report that that problem was an anomaly, and not standard operating procedure. Moreover, the management was responsive and totally understanding of my concerns. I've ordered from Gastonomie491 a couple of times since my review and I can attest that they deliver breakfast orders in a timely manner (within 35 minutes). That said, and in all fairness, I hereby upgrade my review to 5 stars.

This place is a complete mess. This is the second time I've ordered through Seamless and they never confirm the order until after I arrive to pick it up. Why offer this service if you can't check what orders have been received? When I arrived to pick up my order, the staff went to the back to confirm it. This was 20 minutes after I placed the order. There were numerous employees standing around and tons of customers that needed help but it appeared that nobody was being serviced - just a lot of visible confusion with staff and slow service. Two different people made parts of my sandwich and when I got to the front of the line my sandwich had gone missing. No apology to me, just noticeable tension between staff members as one was blaming the other for packaging it in another customer's bag. They made my sandwich again. As I watched it being wrapped by an employee not wearing latex gloves, I thought about complaining, but I just wanted to get the eff' out of there. Almost an HOUR after I placed my order, I departed with my sandwich and a disgruntled employee saying, "Sorry for the screw up," in the most monotonous voice. It's a sandwich, not a casserole. It should not take an hour to make. I think my days here as a customer are finished.

Great selection, nice people working here, and fun atmosphere (at least on recent weekends!). They recently had a live band, which created an enjoyable Persian-esque diversion on a Saturday. We come here a lot during the week because we know that the cafe is going to offer delicious food at reasonable prices. Not to mention it is quick and easy! The Aussie feta is some of the best cheese I have ever had!

Five of us went here for brunch, we all got different meals and the most enthusiastic reaction any diner had to the food was "eh, it's OK I guess." Three of us had roasted potatoes on the side and it was basically a Goldilocks scenario: mine were cooked through but completely cold, another order was hot on the outside but raw in the middle, and the third order was fine. The steak for the steak and eggs was tough; a cheaper cut that needed to be cooked a lot longer to break down connective tissue. The burger was unremarkable, and my lavash wrap was way too much wrap and totally unseasoned as far as I could tell. My friend really enjoyed her mascarpone parfait. The servers were very friendly but also very slow. We had to ask multiple times for things like water, and my cappuccino didn't come until the meal did. Decor was nothing special; it's also a market and very much feels like it when you're dining there. With all the brunch options in the city, I wouldn't return.

Gelato was superb. Smooth, flavorful, creative flavors like Salted Maple, Fig Amaretto, and Key Lime Hibiscus were available. All absolutely delicious. Price was a little high for the amount given, but that's par for the course now a days. I wish they offered more flavors as they only have 7 or 8, but they were all really outstanding, so I'm not complaining. I definitely recommend checking it out.

  • Lucy C.

The hot chocolate I ordered really was nothing special. Nor was my sister's espresso+ gelato. There is however, seating and a large variety of snacks. Sometimes they leave out samples. The bread I tried was excellent, but probably only because it was free.

This place was the perfect spot to stop in to warm up with an expertly prepared latte and a few sweets. I went with friends and their sleeping infant who remained sleeping as the ambiance here was low key and subtle. They were extremely accommodating with the stroller. Definitely a spot I will revisit to check out their sauces and schmears and grab another one of those great lattes, perhaps with a good book.

My husband and I stumbled upon this place our first morning in New York. It was a short walk from our hotel, and was open early. The coffee was fabulous and the breakfast options plentiful. The staff were extremely nice and the whole place just had a ton of charm. We liked it so much we returned for breakfast the next day, too!

Food is good but overpriced. Counter service is very erratic. One day attentive service and the next complete disinterest. Staff will stand around not busy or chatting with each other and not look to help waiting customers.

  • Steven W.

High prices for (lower than) average food and poor service. I've been a customer on and off for two years. Last night took my daughter for a cupcake - paid $4 for a stale rock-like Red Velvet. Tables outside were empty but we were told we could not sit there without paying for table service. (Every other place on Columbus Ave was packed, BTW.) I prefer Lenny's up the block which has better food, cheaper prices and better service.

4 stars for the selection of Italian cheese/meats and staff. The cheese is inexpensive for the quality but quality is key here. Fresh bread is baked daily and I love double cream butter that is sold here!

I had the ricotta pancakes for a Sunday brunch, and I had a great experience! The pancakes were very good (I would say 4/5, but I don't give out 5/5 scores very easily), the waiter was VERY nice and attentive without ever making me feel chased out even when the place got a little more crowded. I think it's hard to find a place that's very good/popular but still doesn't make you feel rushed or treated like one of many, many customers they want to get through, so that was a big plus for a long Sunday brunch with a friend I hadn't seen in so long! I don't write many reviews either, but I wanted to give this place a little boost after that pleasant experience last weekend.

This review is for the phone ordering of the box of chocolates. I was saddened to hear that my favorite chocolatier extraordinaire Richart had closed shop in San Francisco and now was online with an only place to taste and buy them this gourmet place Gastronomie 491. The staff was helpful and listened patiently to my request full marks for service here. Now on to the chocolate itself folks I can't recommend this selection enough as Petits RICHART Intense collection has never failed to impress. Even the harshest connoisseur gave this selection a 5 stars. I was so impressed by the this collection I ended up buying the book by this master of craft "Chocolat Mon Amour" on my last visit.

I used to have breakfast here often. No more. Today mentioned croissant not fresh. Waiter rudely said, We dont bake them. Meanwhile floor being mopped under my chair, filthy mop repeatedly squeezed into yellow bucket beside my table. Cleaning guy had already shouted, Room no open before 8! (The only reason I was still going here was that place says it opens at 7. Other nearby place, Good Enough to Eat, says it does not open till 8. Also difficult to get waiter's attention. Too busy chatting among themselves.) Customers here asked nicely to have awful, screaming music turned down at breakfast. Waitress said, Can't turn down speakers on that radio station. Enough. From now on will go to Joe's Coffee, next block. Pastries not good, but coffee is, visits short, pleasant. Which may be why lines around the block for Joe's every morning, here not.

This place has become our Saturday afternoon late-lunch go-to spot. The food and pastries are wonderful. I don't care much for the gelato or espresso (it's just not the real deal, I say with authority after living in Italy for almost 5 years). The counter help is always a bit frantic, so they definitely need to streamline the process to take money and pound orders out. Since it hasn't been open THAT long I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and let them iron the kinks out.

I made a reservation to meet a friend here for brunch. The tables are smushed in the back right by the cash register or alternatively on a little raised area that would be cute if the tables weren't so close together. We were packed in right next to a group of Russian tourists whose jackets, bags and elbows kept ending up on the bench next to me or on my table. Given the small number of tables and the fact that there were maybe three or four groups at any given time, the service was ridiculously slow. I stood by the cash register waiting to be seated for several minutes--again, despite the lack of customers--and the waiter came so infrequently that my friend and I had to go up to said register to ask to order, then again to ask for the check and again to ask him to come take away the check and cards and charge us. We would have just given up and left had it not been Sunday morning. We knew we wouldn't find seats anywhere else. I will not be making reservations here again. One caveat, though--the food, when it did arrive, was really, really good!

I live around the corner from this place, and overall it is really good. My wife LOVES the cannolis from here. I personally love some of their pre-prepared side dishes. Mushroom salad, fennel orzo salad, and winter kale salad were all absolutely fantastic. They aren't cheap (~7-12 dollars per pound) but for the quality I don't mind it. I haven't actually eaten at the restaurant part of it, but from a standerby status, it seems like people have to wait a good bit to order and be served. I guess I don't mind because the takeout/to-go is very quick.

Up from Philly to take care of some business, I found myself in the 80's on Columbus Avenue in the late afternoon. On a whim I walked into Gastronomie 491 because it reminded me of a charcuterie I'd been to in Montreal. Nicely laid out with several different stations dealing with meals, sandwiches, coffee/drinks, and selected imported snacks and packaged goodies. Seating in the rear, but the vibe was definitely high end takeout. The displays looked quite good, but suffered from overpriced syndrome. An awful lot of that going around these days. I picked up a Israeli Chicken Soup ($6) which was good, but perhaps I was hoping for New York chicken soup. This one was a little light in the broth. Also, had the Jerusalem Laffa ($8), basically a falafel pita made costly by the nom internationale. The experience was definitely OK, but it would take something really special to reach fandom.

I loved the balance between the Fontina Cheese, the eggplant, and Big Portobello, with the saffron aioli on a ciabatta bread. The Sirloin Burger's brioche bun just hugs the feta and plum tomatoes, and sings a bromancy duet as it ventures from palette to gut. The Sicilian Lemonade is a graduated step from the Grown Up Soda. The menu is worth investigating.

My husband and I picked up our son (which is rare because of hubby's crazy schedule) and decided to get some gelatto. It was a Monday ar 4:30 so we didn't think it was a big deal to grab a seat in the empty outdoor seating area. Were we ever wrong! An employee came and removed the glasses from the table and told us it was for food service only and pointed to a sign stating such (how tacky). My husband was very upset he would react like that infront of a child (just turned 6). As if $15 for 2 tiny cups of gelatto wasn't enough reason to skip this place! We will never go back I don't care that it is literally accross the street from my son's school :-(

We were looking for Sunday brunch and our regular place was over crowded. We found this place and went in. The deli part seems to be great, with lots of delicacies and mouth watering pastries, so I was obviously excited. But once we got a table the service was so damn slow! Hard to believe for a place with 3 servers for 6 tables. And I'm specifically talking about the servers, not the kitchen, food came back pretty quickly. These guys gave us a table and didn't come back until we asked them if we could order some food. Then when the food came I asked for some bread and the waiter even forgot about it! The only time when they were really efficient was when charging my credit card. They didn't even take 20 seconds to come back with the receipt. Awesome. About the food. There is a small number of recipes that are already as good as they're ever gonna be, and experimenting with them will only make em bad. Specifically for this place I'm talking about the eggs Benedict. Where the hell did my muffin go? How about my fries? And you call that hollandaise sauce? What is this shredded veggie patty? Seriously. Leave them in peace, go back to the basics and you may nail it again. These were by far the most disappointing eggs Benedict I've ever had. Went in hungry, then paid $40 and went out hungry and disappointed. Def not coming back for brunch, maybe for some pastries, but not for brunch.

We had brunch today, to try out a new place. Service was really slow, and they kept forgetting about things we'd ordered. But the food well.... food so fancy but cheapish that it's neither here nor there. We tried the eggs benedict. They look ok, but veggies replace the biscuit and potatoes you'd expect and the sauce is tasteless. So overall "healthy" but not what we came for, especially for $13! Coffee is illy so that's good. Place is comfortable even though it's also a deli.

this is my, what, third update? The food is great, but the service is still spotty. Hadn't "Gastronomie" learned anything from being next door to "Lenny's"? The ordering and payment process here is still not streamlined, the cashiers are busy making coffee and taking phone calls, catering orders, occasionally packing up prepared foods - it's a total mess, created with the best intentions. Cashiers must be cashiers. Let's start with that.

4 stars for "typically 5 star, sometimes you hit a 1 or 2 star experience": 5 star: - Lemon ricotta pancakes (usually) -- see below - Manhattan panini (I rarely crave paninis, but this one is awesome) - Mezze plate -- better than Hummus Kitchen - Everything you need to make the most amazing picnic basket ever - Gelato - homemade everyday, it rocks -- especially the Maple Walnut...sample the flavors & decide what you like best - Family-friendly...the atmosphere is pretty chill, it doesn't feel awkward to bring your kids (kid-friendly seating is in the back)...better yet, buy stuff here & go to Central Park - Small but nicely chosen wine selection 1 or 2 stars: - Service is usually competent & friendly (especially if you sit in the restaurant area in the back), but occasionally crazy stuff happens that leaves you wondering how that was even possible, for example: -- Panini to go is totally burnt through (how did the person making and / or packing it not notice & start over?) -- The pancakes come out super weird-tasting, like maybe an ingredient got left out -- The cash register area is quite disorganized, and they seem to sometimes have trouble determining who should be getting checked out & in what order We typically have a great experience here, so a strong 4 stars!

G 491 is a gem that, for whatever reason, remains overlooked by the UWS crowd, despite: - Better brunch than Good Enough to Eat, which is indeed good enough to eat but definitely NOT Good Enough to Wait In Line For. Try the lemon ricotta pancakes and omelette, both excellent - Better dessert than Sugar Plumm Fairy or Cafe Lalo. Their cupcakes are from Billy's - Cheese counter as good as Whole Foods And no crowds! And nice service. Just added a gelato counter for the summer that looks good too. Maybe it gets overlooked because it has so many different offerings and people aren't sure what to make of it - restaurant or deli? Groceries or coffee? Sandwiches or dessert? Doesn't matter to me - it's well curated and prices are good for the quality

I really want to like this place... First off, the food is really good. They've got a huge selection of desserts (cupcakes from Billy's Bakery, lots of tarts, pies, a plethora of chocolates, gelato from Il Laboratorio Del Gelato, Jeni's...so A+ for all that) and pretty good sandwiches. Along with lots of miscellaneous items (try the mini spanakopita). They also have an impressive prepared foods counter with spice crusted salmon, chickpea tagine, roasted vegetables, whole rotisserie chickens (you can see them rotating in the back!), couscous, Greek salad, and many other things. There's a mediterranean feel to the entire store that shows up in a lot of their food. And the produce: apples, pears, bananas, grapes, yum. A good selection. They also make smoothies using bowls of fresh fruit, strawberries and bananas among them. However...the service is terrible. It takes several minutes for them to notice you, and they don't even try to pretend they're not completely stressed out from the effort it takes to run a cafe/pastry shop/sandwich shop. I'm often waiting for 10 minutes for them to put together a sandwich for me. They're also quite unfriendly, like you're doing them a disservice by showing up and interrupting their day by daring to ask for a sandwich. I don't think that's how it's supposed to work...

Worst worst service known to mankind. Gave this place two tries...disappointed both times. I understand they're new but no organization what so ever. Definitely need a manager.

I've only dealt with Gastronomie 491 by ordering on Seamless, but I haven't been disappointed at all. Fresh, unique flavor combinations, and I love their soups. It's gotten to that level of comfort where I don't even need to call to find out what their daily offerings are, I just click it, and am always pleasantly surprised. Fast delivery too.

I have only tried the macarons here, but based on that, I won't be returning. The quality was pretty poor, and way overpriced. The service was nice, but I just got a very "Dean and Deluca" type vibe here, and that place is just not for me.

I also wanted to like this place. Saw the high-ish reviews for brunch and so I decided to stop in. I had the eggs benedict, but instead of bread, it was served over a weird hashbrown/carrot type of thing. For all the bread that they sell, you'd think they'd be able to put it over some fancy sort of biscuit or something. This being said, it did come with a nice runny yolk. Not sure I would have paid 14-13 dollars for it again, however. The service here was bad as well. There were only a few other people there, and I could see that the other people were waiting/growing impatient as well. In the end, the waiter took so long to get us the check, that we thought we had to go to the front to pay. Not necessarily the fault of the waiter--He was just too busy with other things. However, I think we should have been given some free chocolate or something. Gastronomie, I'd stick to what you do best, and maybe sell more pastries or something.

Disappointed by lunch delivery today the Liguria sandwich with pesto, mozzarella and tomato sounded perfect. While it did come hot, the tomato wasn't ripe and there wasn't pesto on the sandwich. The cheese wasn't melted. Highly disappointing.

This place has been always disappointing. I gave them chance after chance. Few times a sandwich was served with semi- cold ingredients, simply tasteless. Staff ignores you, practically pretending as if they are doing something. Only thing I enjoy in this place is the coffee.

Yes, I like the concept and the food at this bakery/store/sit-down/ takeout kind of place.

I go to school near here and being that Iv been here multiple times I would say it is a great place to get a small dessert during lunch.

My husband and I LOVE LOVE this place. The food is excellent and you can enjoy it in so many different ways, takeout, delivery or sit down dinner. The staff is friendly, the food is well-priced, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Best thing- the burgers are made to order. The meat is actually ground once you order it. It takes a bit of time but absolutely worth it.

I am resident of the UWS and can honestly say Gastronomie 491 is one of the best eateries in town!! Brunch on the weekends is lively with excellent service and a varied and delicious menu!! Staff always has a smile on their face which is welcoming and makes for a far more enjoyable experience. If you're a coffee affectionado do try to have you coffee prepared by Aurora!! A native of Italy, she has mastered preparation and top notch service. DId I mention they have IILY coffee? Delicious. While specialty items are not hard to come by in the various upper scale delicatessans and supermarkets of the UWS, Gastronomie has a more personal, local eatery vibe which is refreshing. Unpretentious but never fails to deliver quality!! Fresh produce restocked daily, fresh juices prepared to order, food by the pound (all really fresh and exquistely presented), cafe, pastries carefully selected from the city's best pastry vendors and shops, specialty products ranging from ice cream to spices, excellent cheese selection with knowegable monger available to answer all inquiries! :) Seating in the back of the restuarant/market allows for a quiet meal away from the rustle and bustle of the grocery at the front of the store. Chef Dennis Petronio--charming and definitely qualified as Excecutive Chef--offers carefully prepared and beautifully presented meals with daily specials to boot! Open kitchen allows patrons to watch as Chef and kitchen staff diligently prepare your meal!! Truly, a unique experience. Most recently, for their two-year anniversary approximately 15 of their local vendors came to restuarant to discuss their product and not to mention yummy samples!! Locally produced mapple syrup ice cream with pink Himalayan salt? YES PLEASE! :) It was great to learn about the various products sold at the store from the vendors themselves and gain some insigh into production and so forth... Somewhat reminicent of a mini-Eataly on the UWS, meditteranean style... Lovely staple on the UWS. Don't miss it!! :))

Really disappointed. Was around the neighborhood and wanted a place for brunch, saw the positive reviews on Yelp so decided to give it a shot. Upon walking in, it's more of a pastry shop, with a few chairs and tables for sit-down meals in the back, which is fine. Had the Eggs Benedict... worst I've had. Eggs were over-boiled. The eggs were laid on top of some mashed up veggies and potatoes that were tasteless, and the salad tasted moldy. Since I wasn't really satisfied with my meal, I figured I'd get some dessert. Got some cake of some sort, very meh. Overall a cute place, but will not be going back.

We went to Gastronomie 491 for an early dinner last night, a Saturday evening. I had the salmon, which was cooked to perfection. The asparagus was overcooked, which is unfortunate because I love a nicely seared spear. My date had the crab cakes, which were good but not amazing. Our server seemed like a nice person, but a terrible waitress. We had to flag her down repeatedly, as she never checked in on us and there were several things (refills, extra sauce, etc.) wanting. Ordering dessert at the restaurant is an altogether inelegant experience. We had to go to the front of the shop to buy it, then awkwardly carry it back to our dinner table, which still hadn't been cleared or cleaned, well after we paid the check. At these prices, I expect the wait staff to meet a minimal level of service, at the very least. The décor is fantastic. It makes you happy just to walk in. Just not to stay, due to the poor service. So I may go back for the food, but will perhaps make it a to-go order.

A neighborhood staple. In here several times a week for take-home items. Food is generally very good. However I am oftentimes perplexed that the service remains spotty and disorganized. Ringing up a few items at the register is cumbersome and time consuming. Once I overheard staffers vociferously complaining about their jobs. Poor management? Hope to see improvements - I noticed a lot of other similar yelp comments.

The burger tasted like boiled meat (though the side salad was good), my partner had the gravlox on hash browns with salad which she said was "OK", the chocolate souffle was heavier than a ton of bricks, the chocolate cupcake was only slightly less dense but with a flavor reminiscent of Hersheys (I dont consider that gastronomie), and the waiter (very nice guy) had not a clue regarding anything on the menu. Way overpriced and not worth the yuppie presentation - imho.

Went here early one Friday morning because I wanted a healthy breakfast, without the upper west side cost. I had the american breakfast which was delicious and filling, and my boyfriend had whole wheat banana pancakes that were to die for! But what really made this place was the staff! Our server Carolyn was diligent and really friendly! I barely remember names, but over a week later I still remember it... thats how awesome she was. Where I stat you watched them cook, and they put the same amount of detail into my dish as they did into seemed like the owners breakfast. Also everyone who passed by, waved and said hello! It really felt like a homey place with great food!

Good food. Sat in small cafe area in the back. Got three egg omelette w mushroom white cheddar and brocollini which I thought was a creative option. Really tasty. Lemon ricotta pancakes were good too though not outstanding. Got a side of labneh which was delicious, better than most labneh in this area. Really nice waitress! We are vegetarians and really enjoyed it.

Though not moderately priced, Gastronomie 491 is a fine establishment, serving food with fresh ingredients and a wide array of special drinks, desserts and other products that you would be hard pressed to find in any other deli or food shop. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I was immediately given a favorable impression when I ordered a tomato and mozzarella panini. Though I was only ordering a relatively simple item, the waiter did his best to serve it with a delicious salad, complete with romaine lettuce and other vegetables. In addition to a full menu with sandwiches, meats and other delights, Gastronomie also offers an impressive selection of special pastas and olive oils. I am glad that I happened to stop in Gastronomie 491, I came in just for a sandwich, but found there was much more in store for me.

This joint boasts pricey but well-curated selection of unique items like Teariffic and Jeni's ice creams (among a slew of other high-quality frozen treats), interesting cheese descriptions, Richart chocolates, and Iranian yog(h)urt.

After a morning walk through Central Park, I was looking for a hot cup of coffee, seating to read the newspaper and a bite to eat. I found just that and brief, quality conversation with friendly customers. I ordered at the bar and although seating is limited in the front of the shop, I was able to snatch one of two tables. The ham and cheese croissant warmed up was worth the $3.25 - the top layer of the croissant had a nice crunch and the inside was soft and buttery. The counter staff could have been a bit more outgoing, but the friendly customers of all ages made up for it. Overall, great experience!

I love this place because it has a little something for everyone. It's beautiful and acts as a grocery and restaurant. I come in here often for coffee and i always end up picking up a pastry or two because they all look and taste so great. A few weeks ago when I stopped by they were having a tasting of paella, ham and sangria (and live music!). I ended up trying everything! The staff was friendly and taught me about what I was eating. I definitely want to try their restaurant since they obviously value quality, flavor and presentation.

Upon walking in, this place looks more like a fancy gourmet deli shop than a restaurant. But as you walk further into the back of the store, there's table service. Brunch is ok and a bit on the pricier side but their dessert is decadent. I ordered an omelette, which cost about $13. It was tasty but nothing special about it. I really like their iced coffee though and it came in this fancy cocktail-like glass. The coffee itself was brewed perfectly for me. Not too light and not too bold. Dessert here is a must try. Their tiramisu is not in a typical cake form you would find at pastry shops. Instead, it's almost served like a frozen yogurt. It's topped with rich creamy mascarpone with strong espresso fillings on the bottom. No wonder my friend decided to order two servings but I personally could not even finish one. Overall, the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. It was a pretty warm day so their AC wasn't the strongest but tolerable. I would only give it a 3 star just because the omelette wasn't the best I had and it felt a bit overpriced. Would I come back? Sure. Definitely for more tiramisu.

ordered the manhattan panini for delivery cost: ~$12 w/tip delivery time: 30min the salad was small with even less dressing. but not bad. sandwich was pretty tasty, though a bit small. but then again this is the uws so everything is 'kind of expensive'.

The soups here are always really flavorful and delicious. Love that they have free wifi! I've never had bad service here and I've been over 20x's. I haven't tried the desserts but they look amazing.

The food & food quality is very good but be warned if you want a sit down meal. Saying service is slow is being generous. On a Tuesday afternoon, I waited 10 minutes for an iced latte. I'll probably get my panini next week. To be continued...

Wow. What Can I say.... my experience was beyond superb!! I was captivated the moment I walked through the doors. I love the variety of different products you can by that you wouldn't normally find at a traditional market. I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Martin!! His expertise is in the cheeses. He gave me a great history about my cheese plate before serving it to me. After listening to him speak, I was beyond excited to try the different cheeses. I couldn't settle on which one was my favorite. Every time I thought I found my favorite. I tried the next the one... which was equally good. This went on until the entire plate was finished..... It was snowing that day, so i made sure I grabbed a Hot Chocolate. I believe it was a spicy Hot Coco. I forget the actual name of it, but it's probably the BEST hot chocolate I've had. I used to work for Max Brenner, Chocolate by the Bald man.. so for me to make a comment like that.... it's a big deal. Anyways, go there and asked for it, i'm pretty sure they're going to know what you're talking about. I can go on for hours about my experience but I'll let you find out for yourself. The staff there is beyond friendly and welcoming. Just invite yourself over and embrace everything this little gem has to offer :-)

The cute seated cafe area is towards the back. My friend and I went for the bottomless bellini brunch and our entrees were the wheat pancakes and the french toast with fruit. My friend enjoyed her pancakes and I really enjoyed my french toast. It was soft and very yummy. Our waitress, and later waiter after our waitress ended her shift, was very good about keeping our glasses filled. We used a Gilt deal, but I wouldn't mind coming to Gastronomie again if I'm in the neighborhood.

Ordered a sandwich and a cappuccino from here for lunch today , when I received the delivery the inside of the bag was wet with coffee but I didn't think it was enough to damage the sandwich BUT when I unwrapped the sandwich it was pretty much destroyed :( I called and told them and they immediately resent my order ! I called to thank them and also explain that it was NOT the delivery guys fault and I asked that he doesn't get into trouble because it was whoever bagged everything that caused the problem of course I tipped the delivery guy twice cause I felt bad . About the food now , it was damn tasty and I will order again ! The panini was amazing , perfect combination of meat, cheese and apple (the manhattan panini) mmm and the side salad they give u with the sandwich was really good with an amazing lemon vinaigrette ! Very very good ! Customer service was EXCELLENT !!! Friendly and accommodating !

The staff is rude and racist. If you are anything other than white, you will be mistreated and ignored. We bought an ice cream for kids there and sat for 20 minutes, until a white lady came that wanted our table on a sun side. They said, since we didn't get waiting service they asked us to leave. Kids were only half finished with their ice cream!! Another white lady was sitting with the dog in the next table, which is completely unsanitary, and unlawful in NY. I have nothing against dogs, but being mistreated with little kids over a white person wanting the table is above anything. I will be reporting them to BBB. Hope they are closed down.

Food was OK. I was mostly impressed they had the Noosa yogurt I love that is made in Colorado. I ordered the Manhattan sandwich that was delicious but very buttery. It came with a salad that helped lighten it up. My husband got the breakfast bar that was really not good. Barely any flavor & dry. He only had two bites of it before leaving it for the trash. $1 baklava was OK but could've used more honey & pistachios. Prices a bit steep for what you get. Staff was pleasant at the front of the shop. Seemed to have a good selection of sweets & salads up front. We're just visiting NYC & from what we tried it is not good enough for us to want to go back here if we visit the city again but you might want to try their desserts if you're in the area.
