It was national cheeseburger day, I was driving by one of my favorite places growing up that I remembered eating at constantly when I was a kid, so there was only one solution. Even though it made me 10 minutes late to my destination I pulled in, ordered a cheeseburger and a root beer, and went on my way. The burger was amazing, nice and juicy, big, and not expensive at all. The root beer is homemade and amazing. They have great ice cream, the service is fast, and there is plenty of room to sit down if you have time. One of my favorite places growing up in the area and it still does not disappoint.

Like the Wahl burger but every time I order deep fried mushrooms there still ice cold in the middle.I won't send food back do to horror stories. And $10 plus bucks for a burger fries and drink is a little steep IMO

Worked here as a kid. Food is still delicious. Website always has coupons. Add their meat hot sauce to everything for extra yumminess!

Some Pink Floyd fan came up to me while I was in line here. He squeezed my arm so tight that I lost feeling in it. However it had been in pain, so I was grateful that I could no longer feel the pain. I said "thank you, it feels comfortably numb now." He responded, "oh yeah? Well, all in all, you're just another pr**k in Tom Wahl's." Get: Their burger with extra meat sauce, but don't call it a burger What else: Good custard, good home made root beer And what else: We don't need no education Are you sure?: Yes, and we don't need no thought control Any other issues?: No dark sarcasm in the classroom Any shout-outs for anyone?: Teacher leave them kids alone If someone "drives in" to the place and the side of the building collapses, then it becomes "Gone Walls." Tom Wahl's has a very patronizing and comically annoying sign asking you please not to call their Burger a Burger. Apparently burger is a dirty word here. It's a "Ground Round." Perhaps someone should perform a Ground Round-house kick to whoever banned the word burger, and then they can roll a Round on the Ground for a bit. Just kidding. Other that that interesting and quirky idiosyncracy, the best thing about Tom Wahl's is indeed the Ground Round - with extra meat sauce. And it's definitely the standout dish and restaurant in the tiny little town of Avon. And popular with all the Avon Ladies. Though not too popular if they want to keep their figures. This is the flagship location of what has now become a local chain - and it's *the* location to visit for your first Tom Wahl's experience, for sure. If there's one section (south and west face of the building) of the restaurant where S & M "top" people hang out looking for victims, then those are the "Dom Walls." So more about this Ground Round. The roll is fantastic, the sauce is juicy and delicious, and the burger itself is too large for the bun, steaming hot and wonderful. This sort of "meat sauce burger" is really only found in Rochester, and Tom Wahl's makes one of the best 5 versions of it you'll find. Jim's Ground Round, Wimpy's, Schaller's and Nick Tahou's are the other members of the top 5, by the way. If they have pictures of people eating their food all over the place, that's just the "Nom Walls." The custard was good an the small was an enormous size portion, but it was $3, and I found it annoying that they didn't have a baby size version for 2 or less, because I didn't need that much ice cream. It was tasty but nowhere near the level of Abbott's or LuGia's. If they paint their entire restaurant a French shade of Apple-green, then they have "Pomme Walls." I also tried the home made Root Beer, and while I didn't like it as much as Mug N Bun in Indianapolis, it did taste very fresh and unique and homemade, so that also scores a 5 from me. Also, the service was pretty good and fairly friendly, and I love how busy it is and packed full of every kid in Avon. 5 stars all round, for sure. If you like this burger, please also try Wimpy, Schaller's, Nick Tahous and Jim's Ground Round of Spencerport. Garland says: The Soviets helped built a subpar version of this place in East Berlin, so a lot people don't know Reagan meant tear down that "Wahl." And of course any place that names itself after a Pink Floyd album, as well as Tom Selleck, Sawyer, Thumb and the guy that used to chase Jerry around in the cartoons, is alright with me.

Not really my style of burgers but it did the job alright with all the condiments. Lack of fresh handcut fries and poorly maintained seating area will less likely be my number one pick for a quick lunch next time. The name reminds me of a hardware store or something.

If the last review is right this is the original Tom Wahl's which is very cool because I loved this location. The vibe is cool and old fashioned, the burgers are huge and juicy and the menu has a ton of great choices. The homemade root beer in a frosted mug with free refills is delicious, as is the homemade ice cream. There's ton of seating inside and out so its a great idea to come by anytime of year.

Most people love these burgers, but I find them very messy and greasy with little flavor. Now the homemade ice cream on the other hand is so creamy and one of my favs! The onion rings are great too.

This is the original Tom Wahl's that started this local chain. My husband and I stopped here on the way home from Rochester yesterday, after hearing of it's legendary local status. I had the Wahlburger which included swiss cheese, ham and some "special sauce." I upgraded to a meal with their very own root beer (yum!) and fries, and topped it off with a chocolate malt. My husband had the grilled chicken which was also tasty. My heart jumped a little at the price since this is a walk-up joint like BK -$15 for the two of us. The place clearly gets packed as the dining area was HUGE and we were handed one of those light-up coasters to let us know our food was ready. Good road food if you're in the area.

Having made to work here at the age of 14 it would only make sense for me to have a certain disdain for it. However, that is not the case at all. Tom Wahl's is a unique joint in the world of McDonalds, Burger King and Taco Bell. It remains true to it's 50's style theme with neon lights, handmade milkshakes, krinkle cut fries and Tuesday night outdoor concerts in the summer. The food you get here is not the food you get at the aforementioned establishments. You will get a good quality burger, delicious Zweigles hot or even a roast beef sandwich. The soft serve ice cream is still one of my favorite things to get there and the root beer...delicious! (If you need a serious sugar fix that is) They make it in house (or at least they used to). If this is your first time to Tom Wahl's, I suggest a Wahlburger, fry and root beer. They even have combo meals now! The price definitely is not cheap. I went there last weekend and it was $26 for two of us. Be sure to look in the local paper as there is always a buy one get one free cheeseburger coupon. If you go in the summer be prepared to wait in line.

There are few constants in life that are good and filled with just the right memories of childhood, teenage freedom. Flat iron burgers, root beer and a nod to a 50's burger soda-pop joint - Tom Wahl's has it down pat. The Hollywood Burger has always been my favorite... still not sure what makes it Hollywood, but it is a solid cheeseburger. Tom Wahls also has their own root beer - and while it does not have the bite that I like in a root beer, it is more special and tasty than what would have normally come from the pop dispenser. That is right, it's pop, cause this is in Western New York. Pop, you crazy soda drinkers.

This is the mothership Tom Wahl's... still worth a trip. While times have changed, the retro 50's vibe of the O.G. Whale's still pervades. Stopped by the other day to get the classic "Wahlburger" (not to be confused with Marky Mark's Boston restaurant of the same name), order of fries and "homemade" root beer. While I miss the old layout of the joint, the food's still fresh, hot & tasty. I just wish they'd bring back the Caesar Burger... oh, and since they share a common lineage, they honor Bill Gray's coupons (last I checked). Quality may still "predominate" at Don's Original, but it makes regular stops here as well!

Excellent ice cream. This is the original Tom Wahl's, opened in 1955. It is a 1950's diner complete with the black and white checked floor. A great place to stop if only for the experience.

One of the reasons I miss Western NY. The food is unbelievable! I can just taste a steakburger and onion rings washed down by a chocolate shake. I'm from NJ, we have very few venues like Wahl's. Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of great food, but not the same hospitality and what I like to call "socialness". I miss you Tom Wahl!

As a former Avon resident, I stopped at Tom Wahl's while passing through today. I stopped just for the opportunity to have the soft chocolate ice cream which is out of this world good. In the past, I have tried the burgers, fries, onion rings and hots among other items. I found 99% of my dining experiences there were fantastic. I find that their homemade root beer is just a little too sweet for my taste. Bottom line, if your hungry and near Avon, this is a good place to stop.

This place is very unsanitary and that's just the food preparation areas that you can see from near the registers! Saw trays full of sliced cheese sitting unrefrigerated with a tube from a soda machine resting on top of them and all of this was next to an open top garbage can full to the brim. I saw the staff handle dirty containers and then handle scoops of hard ice cream, like literally used the dirty glove to take the ice cream out of the scoop and press it into a bowl. Needs a health department review ASAP.

While recently visiting family, I insisted on visiting Tom Wahls for dinner. This is the hamburger joint of my childhood and while it is bigger and renovated since then, it's still basically the same. I ordered my usual ground steak with ketchup, mustard and pickles with a side of onion rings. I didn't have the root beer in the frosted mug in attempt to keep the calories somewhat manageable but it sure looked good. Nothing fancy here folks just good hamburgers. White hots as well as other menu items are available. Service is quick, staff is friendly and efficient. Plenty of parking and seating both in and under a covered pavilion. Brought back great memories from my childhood and also bringing my young family there when visiting. Worth the visit always!

Good deal with the Floats just $0.99. Burgers are tasty and it's clean.

Going "back home" almost always brings back memories of burgers, mugs of frosty root beer, ice cream and frozen custard stands. Tom Wahl's is one of those places that brings the nostalgia of my youthful experiences back to life. Coming here with my daughter brought back wonderful memories of my dad bringing me here as a young boy. The overall look has changed since I was a kid, with the dining and kitchen area having an open look and the addition of the neon '50's look. The food is better than McD's with a much better menu variety. Seating is plentiful and the quality of service is a notch above the national fast food chains.
