Had dinner at Bar Bolinas Friday, and was so excited about everything! Maybe the best burger we have ever had, sardines were insanely beautiful as well as burrata with grilled Hungarian peppers. Our server recommended a bottle of wine for us that was perfect; a Trrousseau Gris from Russian River. The food, service and even the music were beyond on point. I only wish I lived in New York now and I would be here all the time!

Do you know what Dutch Crunch is? Because I certainly hadn't before I heard an interview with Chefs Nate Smith and Sophie Kamin ( dinnerpartydownload.org/… ). Apparently, it's a California thing to serve burgers on Dutch Crunch bread (aka tiger bread). After hearing the description of it, I just had to stop by Bar Bolinas for their cheeseburger. Right off the bat, it's has kind of a homey, no-frills kind of feel to it. What they do have adorning the place is cool, like cool lamps and trinkets on the fireplace. Despite that, it's actually a well-renovated space. There's a back room with a tin roof and a back yard beyond that. My friend and I decided to stay at the bar. To start, we had the chicharron and the Spanish peanuts. The chicharron was more akin to the pork rinds you get at a bodega than the type you get in a Dominican restaurant, but hey, it was $4. The Spanish peanuts (at $3) were a good bar snack to go along with the beers. They also had some great beers on tap when we went, including a Greenport saison which was delicious. Good whiskey selection too. Onto the main course - the cheeseburger. First of all, it's a very respectably sized patty. Thick and served medium (as per the bartender's suggestion). There were also a few pickled onion rings on top and pickles on the side. I found the pickles a bit too sour, but loved the pickled onions. The Dutch Crunch bread was amazing. It added wonderful texture to each bite (also aurally pleasing). Combined with the onions, it made the burger kind of taste like a Funyun (which is most definitely a good thing). My friend didn't agree with that assessment, so maybe I'm just weird. The burger patty itself was juicy and marinated/spiced well. Just the right amount of salty, and a ton of umami. Oh, and the fries. The fries were among the best I've had in a really long time. Super crispy, a little flakey on the inside, and just perfect. All in all, Bar Bolinas might be my new "it" burger in Brooklyn. I'll definitely be telling people to try it out if they're looking for a new burger experience. Definitely stop by if you're in the neighborhood (or even if you're not!).

It's all about that Cheeseburger on Dutch Crunch here ($16), which also comes with some really excellent fries. The rest of the stuff was not as memorable. The Tagliarini with the very intriguing sounding Uni Butter was surprisingly flavorless and therefore more upsetting that it was $23. It's a nice spot though, and definitely still worth a visit, at least to try the great burger.

Fish stew also steep (in price) at $23, small, and just didn't taste good. That said, this place is better than Putnams, and friendlier.

Love it. The hamburger & chicharones & sardine toast especially! ... Now that've I've actually had some more, I've gotta say the chicarones is like popcorn & the sardine toast is smokier than a than an old-timey speakeasy. Speaking of speakeasies, the drinks are what bootleggers dream of.

Quaint little spot . Was here for a birthday party . The bar in the front makes it tight to get through when the DJ is playing and folks are dancing. The food was excellent .. Cheeseburger and the fries were great !

I kid you not -- the $16 burger here is just as rich and delicious as Minetta Tavern's $30 famous Black Label Burger. Mind-blowing. Havarti cheese, medium rare cooked to perfection, between a DUTCH CRUNCH bun? I...I just came. I want more. TOP 5 BURGER IN NYC

The bread was burnt, so I didn't order anything after that. Nice decor, yuppie vibe. I miss the mediocrity of Maggie Brown.

Nate Smith has been on my radar since the early days @ Allswell.. I was cooking late until the evenings and when we were finished with an event, we would roll by for his late night menu. The staff was always awesome and the vibe was incredible cool.. Actually made some personal friends just by eating there. Fast forward years later and I hear that this man is opening a restaurant just down the street from me.. Oh, Damn, I just could not wait.. I have been a few times since they opened but, my life got busy and I was only able to visit a few times. But last week, i was able to try their awesome burger all to myself.. The couple times I have been there, i was lucky enough to be under the service of Rackel K (the check read) She is a pro.. Not only as a waitress but, she makes a serious cocktail as well.. Dangerously well balanced.. But, she is warm and professional and obviously knowledgeable and talented.. So staff is awesome, check! The first time I went, I don't really remember what I ordered as I tried a bite of my daughter's burger and I sort of blanked out the rest of the meal.. Sitting there praying she wouldn't finish her meal.. They grow up so quickly, the little jerks. So, my wife and I went and ordered a few cocktails, a few glasses of wine (which one should eat with the burger I suggest the cab franc) The burger, well it's another amazing burger in Clinton Hill Fort Greene.. You have yourself Lulu and Po, you have yourself Emily and you have yourself this beauty.. And like snow flakes and children, each burger is beautiful and special in it's own way.. So, here the burger seems much smaller than Emily and it has the 24 percent smaller price tag.. I would say it was closer to 5 or 6 ounces.. But what the burger loses in size, it makes up for in Flavor.. This burger is super ,musty and earthy... Like the most musty and dry aged burger I have had in recent memory.. It's on this homemade more crunchy than usually bun. The meat is exceptional..Better than most steaks for sure. If I could put the onions from Emily on the burger from Bolinas, I could die a happy man. I highly recommend a cocktail and a burger.. How could you go wrong.. I noticed there were some really pretty clams coming out of the kitchen and we were considering the sepia skewers.. If you are into Kimchi, this version is definitely worth trying.. I was expecting more of a "creative" approach to the dish or an assortment of various vegetables but, it was a straight up just delicious kimchi. Love the room and the bar and the outdoor area.. Good stuff, thanks for opening up in the area!

We went for dinner a few days ago and we were impressed. Its an improvement from Maggie Browns, although more expensive. They remodeled and the space is SO beautiful now. They must have opened up the hall because it doesn't seem as cramped, and the back deck is now enclosed and very elegant. Our server Amanda was awesome! Very helpful about the menu and wine list. I ordered the harissa shrimp (small plate, get a app with it) and my boyfriend got the pasta with pork ragu. Both fantastic. What really impressed me though was the peach cherry crumble with fennel custard.....GAME CHANGER. It was SO good, and I'm not really a fan of fennel, but this as amazing and you cannot miss it. I can't believe I almost didn't order dessert. Luckily, Amanda was watching out for me. We will be back for cocktails soon!

Enjoy it while you can - this place is going to take off - you know: crowded, noisy, can't get a seat, overwhelmed kitchen, etc. But right now? It's near perfection and a GREAT addition to the Clinton Hill restaurant scene. A small space, a short bar. Very casual, bustles but isn't hectic or loud. (Yet!) We ate at the bar. Bartender was friendly, attentive, smart about his work. One of us had a cocktail from the list, and it was terrific - the Li'l Mesa. The other ordered a more-or-less custom cocktail, rye-based, also executed perfectly. Balanced, flavorful, and quickly prepared, but with care. Spanish peanuts - tasty seasoned nuts - got us through the menu phase. It's a diverse, colorful menu with plenty of options for omnivores, vegans and all between. We shared a sarding toast appetizer - yummy, with plump, tender sardines on texture-y thick toast. Also shared a very fine chili and coconut soup, which tasted of full-flavored green chilis (memories of Hatch, N.M!) and light coconut. The chilis pack punch, but it's the right punch and the flavors all come together perfectly. Finished up the appetizerfest with the grilled broccoli - tender, but not even close to ovecooked. And like everything else, the plate was full of freshness and flavor. Grilled sepia was tasty, accurately cooked and the meld of flavors on the smallish plate made it an excellent choice for an entree-ish small plate. The cheeseburger was practically a necessity, if only in order to experience the hilarious phenomenon of a NY restaurant making distinctive use of what is, in the Bay Area, a very ordinary supermarket commodity: the "Dutch Crunch" bun. Bar Bolinas' version is substantial, tastier than most, and a perfect choice for this very stacked, very California, and very high quality burger. 'Nuther winner! Tried to talk my companion into dessert, and failed. Not that we needed one, but that's a perfect excuse to go back to Bar Bolinas again, soon, before it "takes off."

What's on my mind one week later? The amazing dinner I had at Bar Bolinas last Tuesday. There are fond memories of pork belly soaked in some sake/soy type of sauce that just melts in your mouth like M&Ms had always claimed but was never true (this is the real deal). The freekeh (think scallions but better) with cauliflower (think cauliflower but better) made me fall in love with vegetables again. The last time that happened was when I was in San Francisco. Sure enough, the owners of this joint are from Northern California (redwood dots the interior). They know their vegetables. There was a cocktail involved that was also delicious but the name of it is lost on me. The larger point is get a drink. Don't stop there (you know who you are Occupy Bar people). Be seated and use the extra table space to order a few mains to share. Ask the servers about portion control (most of the mains are oversized tapas). The waitstaff are as sublime as what comes out from behind the kitchen and the bar. I never went to the place in this space that came before Bar Bolinas (a Southern restaurant called Maggie Brown). I'm glad this place exists now (sorry Maggie), and I'm coming back on the next warm day for backyard(!) seating. Until then, memories (ugh).

Highly recommend the burger on Dutch crunch. Well worth it....also the fish sandwich is really delicious with the tartar sauce they use. Solid fries and strong cocktails. Overall very good. Wish the dinner menu changed more often...

Bad service, livestock in the form of burgers. The waitstaff here is aloof as fuck, including a bartender who never once asked us if we'd like another drink, refused to solve problems and a waitress who told us we couldn't have a particular table for absolutely no reason. Also, this strip ain't exactly Soho, so the prices are too high, especially given the quality of the food (the sole vegetarian option is a minute serving of pasta like you'd make in your studio apartment on a tuesday. Don't pay $19 for it). The burger tasted good but I ordered it medium and it came basically as a living cow, mooing between the buns. I politely pointed it out, and I was told I should have let them know sooner because they could "throw it back on the stove." No, actually, you can't do that. It violates the Health Department rules fo sho. I was never so much as apologized to, let alone offered a discount for the live calf I ate half of, and was in fact told that their special meat curing was why the cow had not yet died when it reached my plate. Huh? In addition, no one once asked us if our food was enjoyable (at least two of three guests were unsatisfied with their meals) and the bartender and waiter in this cramped space really looked at all three of us the whole time like they wished we would go away. Sorry your acting career is not panning out folks, not my problem. Try and be good at the job you do have. My advice is to skip this place and get the delicious lamb kabob two blocks down that is $6.

Great food and friendly service. Especially good if you're in the mood for some nontraditional brunch, such as summer squash with trout and egg. The only problem is that the back room is seriously in need of some sound insulation.

Exquisite. Best thing to happen to Clinton Hill in years. My new favorite spot. The backyard is beautiful, the inside cozy and comfortable. But the magic is in the food. The artichokes were tender and delicious, the soft shell crab was cooked perfectly, and every single thing I've ordered--in the three times I've been there in the last month--has a mixture of ingredients that's pure genius. Save room for dessert because the cherry crisp with fennel custard is ridiculously good. Thank you, Bar Bolinas.

One of the best meals I've ever had. Tried every seafood dish and every vegetarian dish and all were five stars. Hesitate to spread the word too much as you can actually make a reservation now!, but they deserve it. Awesome job Bar Bolinas.

Words cannot express my love for this place! I was a huge fan of the previous restaurant, Maggie Browns, but this place is sooo much more than MB's ever was. Let me just say one thing...crispy. chicken. sandwich. World changing. The best chicken sandwich I have ever had in my life. Coupled with a delicious Bloody Mary on their back patio...this place is officially my favorite brunch spot in Brooklyn.

I was saddened when Maggie Browns closed. I loved the breakfasts, the "Maggie brown eggs" and biscuits being my favorite. I loved the atmosphere the friendly waitstaff and the vibe. Dinners were mediocre but it didn't matter much because it was cheap and fun. That said I was a bit cynical with the opening of bar bolinas. Not only did it replace Maggie Browns, but it was named after a town in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a native San Franciscan, I know The Bay Area knows about food, I would say more than most cities in the U.S. After having two wonderful dinners at Bar Bolinas, I can only say that this is now my favorite restaurant in NYC. The food, cocktails and service are spectacular. Sure it is pricier than Maggie Browns but it is in a different league. This is not bar food, but thoughtful well executed cuisine.

Awesome service, but the portions are extremely small for the price. Seafood Sausage was very disappointing and Arctic Char was more like a very strange dessert with oranges and beets.... Too Weird!!!!

  • Alan N.

OK no hate but I think a bad business decision on the part of the owners... yes the food is good and pricey but now they are in direct competition with The Runner across the street and the other place up the block... Maggie Brown's was not broke, they should not have fixed it...now there is a 3 way fight for pretentious on a small strip of turf that can't support it if the market hickups...

Wish this wasn't the case but..zero stars. Ordered a burger medium and it came out totally rare. The kind waitress comped it and brought out a new one after some time... Also.Rare. Unfortunate as I live in the neighborhood and was so looking forward to having a new spot! Sorely disappointed, and still hungry :(

Great addition to the neighborhood! I came here twice for dinner in the first 10 days it was open. Love it. Very charming design. Love the short but very thoughtful and well-curated menu. It has something to please everyone. Instead of a list of 10 signature cocktails, there are three or four, and they are delicious. The few white and reds by the glass are also delicious. Food was awesome. Possibly the best hamburger I've ever had. Seafood and vegetables equally delicious. Beautiful fresh oysters. Nice deserts. Service didn't miss a beat, despite being a brand new place. We are happy to have another new favorite place in the nabe.
