Went here for my birthday. The steak was very good, and exactly medium rare as I ordered. Service was a little slow, but then they were busy. Top notch salad bar!

Terrible service and my chicken fried steak had so much excess breading on in that I could fill up a whole other plate with the excess breading told the manager and all he said was okay and shuke shook my mom's hand didn't do anything about it never going here again

Eight of us had a wonderful dinner tonight. Great salad bar. Delicious steaks, burgers, prime rib and tuna. We all had something different and we all enjoyed everything, including the yummy bread. Service was very good. I know I will be back next time I am in town.

Be sure to notice that the negative reviews are at least two years old. We were in Ruidoso Labor Day of 2012. Made a mad dash to Cattle Barons right after the All American race. Lovely bar with good service and drinks. Phenomenal salad bar with two soup of the day choices. Unusual take on vegetable soup with what I believe is chili powder. Large chunks of fresh veggies. Outstanding salad selection including some pasta salads that don't all taste alike. Whole party ordered ribeye steaks. Two out of three were great - one was a little on the thin side and, therefore, dried out more than the others but still had a great flavor. Generous baked potatoes, warm bread, outstanding (did I say OUTSTANDING) pecan pie for dessert. Limited wine list but some of everything. We're going back tonight for the monstrous chicken fried steak and more salad bar and pecan pie!

The food was fairly good - my filet was a bit under-cooked but that was better than over-cooked. the problem for me was that when the server delivered my plate she informed me that the chef wanted me to know that the toothpick holding the bacon on the meat had broken off and was "somewhere in there". I guess its good that I was warned, but knowing that there was a shard of jagged wood in my meat (and I have a photo showing it to be about an inch long with a splintered end), made it tough to enjoy my meal. I tore my meat apart looking for the wood so that I wouldn't accidentally swallow it and puncture my esophagus. When I told the manager about the situation she seemed perfectly fine with me getting meat with wood embedded in it and said that this is how filets are typically served. I have eaten a LOT of filets in my life and have to say that this was a first for me, and one that I found unacceptable and potentially dangerous.

Salad Bar has quite the array, particularly of prepared cold salads which don't just taste like the same recipe on different platforms. Service was okay...atmosphere okay....can't see going there for a $25 steak though.

quality has gone down since I first ate there a few years ago. The steaks we got (lunch special) were full of grizzle, not a lot of meat. baked potato seemed warmed over. Salad bar was good, but would be nice to have more veggies (radishes, carrots, celery, cabbage) and not quite so many macaroni, bean salads. The soups were not kept full, but the potato soups I ate was very good. I should have just stayed with that!

Pretty decent place. This part of town u won't find if u r a tourist like me. Good to have friends in the area. Huge salad bar, and the steak was good. It seems like a popular place, with the wait being about 30 minutes when we were there.

Golden Corral has nothing on this place. This is a local chain restaurant (located in NM only). As far as dining options in Ruidoso, there are far better choices. Why the parking lot is always full for dinner is a mystery to us. For a mire 28 dollars you can have an tasteless piece of beef with a bland potato. What could be better, oh, a salad bar. Didn't they get rid of salad bars in the 90's? The only good thing on the salad bar was the cheese. Now to the wine, yes we order a bottle of pinot noir. It should have been sent back, but we choked it down and regretted it. The service was good, but sadly it could not make up for the tasteless food.

Just go somewhere else. Well, okay, you twisted my arm; I will tell you more. We were in the mood for a steak and since we were had our two small kids in tow, we opted for this more "family friendly" steakhouse instead of just going somewhere nicer. They brought a decent loaf of bread, which seemed far more like a large roll from Golden Corral. They have a giant salad bar with a very large selection of toppings but with poor, wet, ice burg lettuce and other low quality ingredients, it wasn't appealing or tasty. Both my husband and I ordered the sirloin steak cooked medium. It came with a baked potato/fries/veggies and a salad bar or caesar salad for $19.95. Our steaks had okay flavor and were pretty good cuts of meat but they were overcooked--like close to well done instead of medium. We also had glasses of cabernet. The wine selection and pricing was fine and the pour was ample enough not to feel jilted. This place is totally forgettable. And for a $65 meal (2 adult entrees, a kids spaghetti, and two glasses of wine), it was not good enough.

Great atmosphere. Great service. Awesome salad bar. Rib-eye was sub-par. Blackened catfish was pretty good. A little too expensive but a nice place to dine in Ruidoso. Jan 2010

We like Cattle Baron's unlike some other reviews read here. It is hard to pass up the Salad Bar and order anything in addition to it. What an amazing selection of items from which to choose. Macaroni salad is a favorite. On our 2nd visit, we went for steaks which were also great. A long time tradition and one which we always frequent when in town. This is no 'tre sheik' restaurant. To us it is a salad bar and coke restaurant. For that it is a must visit.

The place was really popular. My coworker and I both had a prime rib. His was undercooked, and mine had all life was cooked out of it. I had to work to eat it. Salad bar was good, a had a great tomato bisque.

Everytime I come to snowboard we eat here. Great service, steaks are always cooked the way I ask, and the salad bar is off the hook. Love this place! Cant wait till next year.

This is a great place, considering how much it was. I had the orange bourbon salmon, which was very delicious. I didn't take much interest in their salad bar, but it looked very full of topping choices. I had the cream of jalapeno soup instead, and was pleased. Nothing to write home about, though. The service was very great, despite our appetizer coming out literally one minute before our entrees. [HUGE pet peeve of mine] None of us had complaints with the food. Our main complaint would be the whole 'no vertical license' rule they have. Though I have a government issued I.D, proving I am over 21 [I'm 23], it just happens to be their policy now, because apparently they have a problem with people bringing in fake vertical I.Ds [uhhh wat?]... completely ridiculous, seeing as I am allowed by law, to have my vertical I.D until I'm 25, but .. what can you do but go to the nearest liquor store afterward to get intoxicated for a fraction of the price they'd be charging us there for just a few drinks.... other than that, a tasty dinner for 3 was just shy of 80 bucks, and was definitely a great deal.

This place typically offers really great steaks! But when we drove in to experience a nice dinner on Friday, the 30 th we were turned away like many others because of a computer glitch in their system And were not seating anyone. So, we came back on saturday the 31 st (new Year's eve) to try again for a nice dinner, we were approached with an hour wait time ----we waited 1 hour and 5 minutes after purchasing an appetizer and drinks before we were even sat, took ten minutes for someone to greet us when we sat down and she immediately took our orders. One minute after I sat down from the salad buffet, my steak was delivered. Clearly, I was unhappy about feeling rushed after I waited so long, and the management was the most disappointing thing in the establishment. He did not care if I was happy and was clearly the " big boss." I will never return as I left crying and severely disappointed and he did not care in the least!!!! Horrible, horrible service!!!
