I'm giving Sugar Nymphs Bistro 5 stars because it is an amazing accomplishment to do what they do out in the middle of nowhere. The food is incredible-- fresh and delicious, with attention to detail. I was there with two other people. One person had the green chile eggs, the other had the bleu cheese potato tart (wonderful) and I had the black bean chili soup and salad. Sounds simple, you say? Yes, but it's all in the details. The black bean chili soup was slow cooked, with beans intact, creamy and perfectly spicy. The salad consisted of just-picked lettuce, dressed and tossed to perfection (rather than just slathered with a glop of dressing). It was all so perfect on a hot summer day after driving for a few hours along the high road. We all had fresh juice drinks (divine) but I regret to say that we skipped dessert! Darn. I am still thinking about the huge chocolate cake sitting on the counter. We did try the complimentary scone-like pastries that the waitress brought, and they were wonderful. The service was friendly, though not too attentive, but we didn't mind too much. Other reviewers have mentioned the decor... well, I would say that it needs some work. It is a combination of hippie & country grandma. Not too attractive. I wish it were a sexier, more minimal, plain and simple decor. Then I could give it a 6-star rating! Really, it's a minor complaint. The fact that this place exists is nothing short of a miracle.

I wish there was a place like this in every town in the USA. Great salads with fresh mixed greens, good sandwiches with homemade bread. If you are on the high road to Taos, you better stop here. We were given the recommendation at a gallery in Truchas and were very happy with our meal. If these folks can make their own bread in an out of the way place like Penasco - why can't everybody ?? Damn I could go off on a rant but how special is a meal with fresh baked bread and how seldom do you see it anymore ?? Go here, eat and enjoy.

Sugar Nymphs is a restaurant we really want to support and to love; They have many vegetarian options, serve local greens and veggies, and are known for their great desserts. The owners were once chefs at the Greens Restaurant in San Franciso. But, the management is busy self-sabotaging. Two of the last four times we made the 20-minute drive from Dixon, the restaurant was closed even though we arrived at a time when they were scheduled to be open. This Labor Day, they announced they were open for lunch, and we took the bait and drove the twenty minutes. We had tried to make reservations, but they said "no", rezzies only for five or more. Fine. The restaurant was humming, moderately full when we walked in. We were happy. I ordered the Black Bean Chili "Special", my husband the grilled chicken and bacon sandwich. We sat and sat and sat for 55 minutes. Then we plunked down $10.00 for our coffees and left. Two tables that arrived after us ate their lunches, paid up, and left. We flagged our waitress over after 45 minutes. She apologized, said our lunches were on the way. Next flag, she said she didn't know why our food hadn't come yet, but maybe we'd like a free piece of cake before lunch. Never again, sad to say.

Is that a Way to Treat a Customer? Sugar Nymphs Bistro is waaaay out it he middle of nowhere. We planned a late lunch stop there on our way between Taos and Santa Fe. I had checked their website and it said that they were open for lunch until 3:00pm starting on July 5 (about 2 1/2 weeks before our visit. We got there at 2:35pm and a lot of tables were filled. As we went into the dining room we saw a sign on the door that said open until 2:30pm. So I asked the only staff person around if we could get a light lunch. She said "No, we are closed". And that was that. I went back to the car to check i-Pad for the website and confirmed that it said that the restaurant closes at 3:00pm. I returned and told the same staffer about the 3pm time stated on the website and she said "I don't know about that, but we are closed". Wow, what compassion for folks that way out there for lunch. We would have been happy with coffee and dessert and we would have probably been on our way before lots of the other folks eating in the dining room. We were allowed to buy a to-go cup of coffee which we passed on.

Amazing food in "the middle of nowhere." The green chili cheeseburger was out of this world cooked medium rare and served on a house made focaccia roll. One of my two friends said the meatloaf sandwich was the best he'd ever had, and another said the goat cheese salad was fantastic. I am not a carrot cake fan, but this one was moist, creamy and delish. The table next to us moaned as we ordered the last two slices. Definitely worth the journey.

I went to the Sugar Nymphs Bistro while on vacation from NYC- the food was amazing. The Green Chile Scramble was mouth watering and really cured my craving for NM green chile. The scones and jam were also very tasty and fresh. The gingeraide was very refreshing. While leaving i noticed some very powerful art drawing attention to Israel and Palestine conflict calling for the US to take action and not support the war against Palestine. The rocks with names of those lost to the conflict as well as Mike Brown's name was very moving. I was impressed to see such a powerful statement on the side of a road in northern New Mexico of all places. Cheers to great food, great service and a great political statement!

My husband and I were visiting art galleries in Truchas, and one of the gallery owners insisted that we try Sugar Nymph for lunch. It's a cute eclectic little place, our waitress was exceedingly friendly, and the food was delicious! I'd describe it as southwestern diner food. I had the mushroom burger and added green chiles, with a side of their soup of the day, a mixed vegetable with sweet potato, corn, kidney beans, and other wonderful things. My husband had the black bean chile with chicken added, and it came with green chile corn bread on top. Everything was great, and we would highly recommend it!

On the road up to Taos, I love this place! Wonderful atmosphere and yummy foods. I stayed near there for a week visiting friends and dined there 3-4 times. So impressed with their green chili cheeseburger. Yummy carrot cake. Try the cranberry lemonade! Can't wait to return on my next vacation in New Mexico! It wasn't just me . my friends who were visitors too, raved about it. My understanding is the owners used to be the chefs at Greens in San Francisco before moving to New Mexico. Such a gem in the middle of a very remote quiet town.

What a treat to stumble across this place while rambling along the twisty scenic route to Santa Fe. Who knew? We knew, when we saw the colorful murals - I always stop for those. A pleasant addition was the artistic display on a human rights theme - you don't see that every day in the backwoods villages. Bravo!

A delicious and unexpected little bistro near Taos. Absolutely delicious scones with jam, and their green chili bacon cheeseburger was superb. Recommended.

Stopped by on the way to Taos from SantaFe. Great little local place. Awesome food. It will not disappoint.....We got there right at 2:30, when they normally close down between lunch and dinner, and they still let us in. The Gingerade was excellent!

Like Stewart A. said, this is classic New Mexican funkiness: quaint, little place with lots of little oddities and delicious, local food (seems they've been doing farm-to-table before it became a buzzword for foodies). This would be excellent as just a bakery: fresh scones with raspberry preserves precede the entree, and huge cakes tempt you from the counter (both the scones and the carrot cake get a big thumbs up). I got the green chile scramble which was light on the green chile by New Mexico standards, but the eggs tasted like they came from the next farm over and the bacon! O my, the BACON: thick, big chunks of it are wonderful in a world of thinly-sliced puny bacon. Though, my favorite surprise on the plate was the biscuit topped with rarely-found cultured butter (more great carbohydrate goodness). For those looking for something different, the Zuni soup/stew with goat cheese was good creamy, spiced vegetarian alternative (with really good crispy bread sticks to boot).

Definitely stop over this place for lunch if you are taking the high road to Taos. Great carrot cake and scones. We missed this place by about 15 minutes so couldn't comment much on the food except for the carrot cake and scones. There were still a few diners there close to 3pm. The outside of the restaurant is decorated with paintings. The carrot cake was very fresh with real slice of carrot and the pineapple added a bit of the sweetness.

Chili cheese burger was delicious The salad trio with ginger dressing was also very good. Free raspberry scone came late, but was warm and delish. Great deserts and accommodating staff made our late lunch very enjoyable.

Las Chulas de Penasco - A cure for the common cocaniero I can't give Sugar Nymphs a real rating becuase it was never open when I was there. Open 11-2 except on bistro and show nights, closed Monday, maybe Tuesday. Everybody I spoke with talked on about the home made food and pizza. Sugar nymphs is also the local dance academy, community theater, summer stock and movie house. Wonderful art decorating every surface. Volunteers just finished tiling the theater foyer. A reminder to me of the constraints of urban dwelling and homeowner associations. Got a permit for that name and sign you Sugar Nymphs? Our world needs lots more sugar nymphs.

WAY overpriced, food is just OK, with a very limited menu. Absolutely AWFUL service with the waitress just being totally out of it. The carrot cake was very good and good coffee.

Yum! I ordered the flank steak sandwich special of day and it was delicious. Definitely a great stop for food along the high road to Taos. I also sampled two of that day's deserts- the carrot cake and the chocolate cake. They were both delicious. The waitstaff was prompt and friendly despite being busy.

Sugar Nymphs lives up to its name. Located in a fairly remote area of New Mexico where you'd expect to get little besides cigs and some expensive gas, this place is wonderful. Nice atmosphere, beautiful hand-baked cobblers, cakes and pies, as well as main courses. Not particularly vegan, but they do have some vegan symbols on the menu and can do gluten-free as well. The service was excellent (young wholesome beauties--aka "nymphs?") and they have an outdoor patio. We made this a road bike destination in lovely rural Northern New Mexico. Check out the cookbooks next to the front entrance. Quite a varied collection. Someone here takes pride in baking. A free scone accompanies all entres.

Excellent lunch spot in a remote location. However, everyone in New Mexico seems to know about it because they were all there when we stopped for lunch. We have a small dog, so were obliged to sit outside on the small porch in a brisk breeze, which was just as well because the place was packed with a stream of people arriving all the time. Despite the crowd, our server was prompt and helpful. We had sandwiches and soup -- the soup was delicious and hit the spot in our al fresco location. Everything was fresh and home-made as others have mentioned. However, the untouched signature carrot cake that I saw on the counter when we arrived was completely gone when we got around to ordering a dessert. After we left, I realized that I should have asked for the cake crumbs on the platter. Next time we will order the dessert first.

On the high road to Taos, make this delightful little bistro your lunch stop. We enjoyed the goat cheese salad with light ginger dressing, the BLT with avocado on house made foccacia bread and a savory cup of roasted pepper soup. An amazing find! Be sure to save room for dessert. Wanted to lick the plate of the almond scented butter cake with fresh plums and whipped cream. Bon appetite, y'all.

We feel so fortunate to live a couple miles from here. What a treasure. All the other reviews are true. We wish they were open all the time, the hours are hard to deal with but at least you can grab a soda and a bag of chips at the new Dollar Store next door if they happen to be closed when you get here.

EXCELLENT bread made in-house. How often is the bread in a BLT more exciting than the bacon (which was good too), the bread was THAT good. Nice cappuccino too. I'll be back!

When you do the High Road To Taos (from Santa Fe), make sure you put Sugar Nymphs on the itinerary. Sugar Nymphs is the essence of rural NM funkiness, a movie theater in its spare time and a kind of community center for Penasco, the restaurant is run by two ladies reported to have worked at Greens in San Francisco. We didn't meet the ladies and our waitress definitely wasn't into being voted as the most attentive in even Penasco, NM. But the food was great: I had a Penasco Burger, which is basically the one that has everything including green chile; it was at the top of the list for green-chile burgers I've had in NM. The home made bun was particularly noteworthy. The GF had what she called the best salads she's tasted, mixed greens with sesame ginger vinaigrette. But, as the name suggests, the reason for putting this on your trip plan is the dessert. The GF had the best carrot cake she's ever had; "more carrot and pineapple than flour, huge, cream cheese frosting studded w crisp walnuts." I had a chocolate maple pecan pie with whipped cream that just reached out and made me scrape up every crumb on the plate.

OK we try NOT to eat animal protein but we were on a 24 hr trip to get out of 'dodge' aka Albuquerque area - so once in awhile the hub imbibes AND OMG, homemade rolls for the best crazy delicious 10 * green chili hamburger ever while I enjoyed, not loved, my curry lentil soup and 10 * organic green salad! Thankfully my hub gave me several large bites - it was so good i did not feel guilty - when one has the opportunity to have something HOMEMADE ya just gotta have it. Yes, we enjoyed dessert too - Thank you Sugar Nymphs - you put the icing on our day! Your place is so much better than anything we have enjoyed in S F and so worth the drive!

Interesting place. Had a kids circus camp going on while we were there. Stopped for coffee and something sweet on the way from Las Vegas NM to Taos. Chocolate cake was tasty. Off the main road but worth looking for.

After visiting the chapel of Chimayo, my wife and I were surprised that our travel guide mentioned this highly-rated cafe in Penasco on the High Road to Taos. We had lunch here and it was fabulous. On the surface, it sounds like simple fare: my wife had a cheese sandwich with bacon and tomato while I had a BLT. Each came with a house salad. It shows that fresh ingredients and a fanatical attention to detail can make even simple sandwiches and house salad into gourmet treats. For desert, we shared the chocolate cake and the carrot cake. They were awesome. The ambiance here is basic country and the service is not elegant, but the food is everything. Based on the food that we had, I give this restaurant 5 stars, which I rarely do. It was far better than the "fancy pants" places that we ate at in downtown Santa Fe.

Amazing. We had an excellent burger and sandwich followed by a chocolate pecan pie that was so good I had to buy another piece to take with me. Since it was Sunday there were complementary scones with the meal and we took ours home and had them for breakfast the next day. Guess what, they were just as good as everything else. Wow. Note: I'm not complementing this place because it's an excellent restaurant out where you really don't expect to find one. I'm telling you this would be a fantastic restaurant no matter where you plopped it down. If you're going through this area, this is where you need to eat.

Great place. It's the essence of what I love about New Mexico: Art, good food, shiny things and gays in the middle of nowhere. Salad was fresh. Green chili cheese burger was great, but the best was the corn and veggie quesadilla.

I wanted to return to Sugar Nymphs for brunch badly enough to drive up the mountain myself. This is quite a feat since I hate driving in unfamiliar surroundings and am deathly afraid of heights. I also had to listen to Chris bitch about my driving skills. It was worth it. I had the green chile eggs and potatoes and a buttermilk biscit. The eggs were fresh and light and the potatoes were golden and crisp. The buttermilk biscuit was fresh baked and delectable. Yummy, but the highlight was the ginger date cake and almond scented cherry cake. I almost forgot that they give you complimentary scones, they were strawberry and the best scones that I have ever eaten. Drive up the damn mountain and do not skip dessert.
