Driving through on i40 and stopped here for dinner. First I'll say the location and surrounding business are a bit questionable, but don't let that stop you. The service is amazing. Our waiter was great and told us tons of things to do in the area. Now the important part, the food. Enchilada with egg on it is a first for this Texan. I know my Mexican food and this was foreign. But the green chilie sauce and everything was amazing. Long story short. Eat here, it's great.

The place looks a little "divey," but it served me one the best enchiladas I have had in a long time. I got the combo plate with enchilada and tamale. The tamale was good -- the breading was not too heavy or thick. I got the beef enchilada with the green sauce and it was excellent!! If given the option, go for the green sauce! The negative: The tortilla chips seemed a little stale AND from my seat I could look into the kitchen and it was somewhat unsettling to see both servers grabbing tortilla chips and putting them into the baskets with their bare hands!

One of the worst meals I have ever had. I was really hungry after having driven all afternoon and stopped here on the recommendation of the checkin lady at the hotel. What a mistake. On a positive note the server was friendly and attentive.

The ladies bathroom has no door on the stall. Anyone can just walk in. The food was average at best.

Traveling through and stopped for food. Wow unexpected treat! Food is fresh and homemade daily. Service is excellent. Polite and efficient. Their were locals selling jewelry but were not pushy. Bought a ring for our daughter. We will definitely made this a family stop from now on. Delicious!.

This is a great place to get a truly home cooked meal! In addition to Mexican, they have awesome American food. We are here on the recommendation of the hotel we stayed in West Gallup. I had a chicken fried steak that was the best ever! Hand breaded in house, all fresh ingredients, and the mashed potatoes were homemade too, from fresh potatoes! Historic Route 66 is the perfect location, because the food here makes me think of how restaurant food was in the 1950's and 60's! We will eat here any time we are in Gallup! Service was great too!!

I have been driving cross country from Pennsylvania to Nevada, and stopped here on the recommendation of the hotel staff. It's the best Mexican food I have ever had. The tamales... I could eat them for days. Free iced tea refill. Pleasant staff. It looks a bit off putting on the outside but the good is amazing.

This isn't my favorite restaurant in Gallup, but it's very good and the people are really nice. I had enchiladas here twice while visiting. The tortillas were not too impressive but I liked everything else. They seem to be popular with the locals, though. Nestled between Chinese massage and an x-rated store makes for quite the ambiance. Ha ha.

RUN AWAY!!!! Absolutely GROSS slop worse than cafeteria food in the 80s with stale chips and tacos and SERIOUS mystery meat. I haven't eaten food this nasty ever. It is like they took the expired rejects from the dollar store and called it food after it sat out all day. My boyfriend can eat any part of an animal no matter how gross or rancid. He even could not palette the strange mush of hell they put in their tacos. He said he never tasted anything like it and it tasted funny. The chips were super stale and the "crispy" taco shells were so old they were chewy. After 2 hours of eating here, I was doubled over in pain... then you know what happened later :( Am so sick of going to places based on 4 star reviews and homemade this and that menu items that must be written by friends and family. They make homemade Indian bread... big whoop when you put nasty things inside the bread. We came here based on reviews and that the locals visit there. They must eat here out of pity for the waitresses to keep their jobs. Decor was tacky and old as was their nothing working bathroom. How they are still in business is way beyond me.

They made us feel welcomed. The food was delicious. It was a fair price. The margaritas were great! It's one of the original places here in Gallup. I had chicken enchiladas with the egg on top.

When I travel through Gallup, I go to Virgie's. Last week I went there for the 3rd time and it was just as good as the first time I went. Chili was great, good tacos, great enchiladas.

Excellent little restaurant with great prices and super friendly service. It is in a little shopping center with an old sign from the glory days of route 66 but don't let that scare you away. The menu includes a variety of Mexican dishes as will as traditional American such as hamburgers. They offer beer, wine, and margaritas (which are only $5). My wife had fajitas and I had a combo plate with a variety of items. The next time I pass through Gallup I will be back.

The wife grew up in Gallup - and while we were visiting last week, she insisted we go to Virgie's. Not much to look at from the outside - adult book store on one side, chinese massage on the other, and a sign that looks like it was designed in 1910. But...looks can be VERY deceiving. We sat down and checked out the menu (which matched the sign in appearances). But, they had some REALLY good choices on the menu. I ended up ordering a combo platter of two chicken tacos and a chicken enchilada, all smothered in green chile (when in Rome, ya kna) - no rice, extra refried beans. The wife ordered chicken enchiladas. We kicked back, drank some beer, and munched on chips and salsa. The salsa actually had bite (thought this was illegal in the US, but who knew?), and the chips were definitely homemade. Our meals showed up...and O.M.G. Best damned Mex food I've EVER had north of the border. The tacos were totally authentic, and the enchilada was to die for. And....the refried beans were fresh, homemade, and delish! The green chile (also made inhouse) was the perfect topper. Truly a meal fit for a king. The waitress was just awesome. Great 'tude...and at the end of the meal, she stopped by to check to see if we needed anything else. I said "yeah, I need a wheelbarrow"...without batting an eye, she said "we've got three in the backroom...just give me a minute"...then cracked a tiny smile. Perfect. ABSOLUTELY go. Enjoy. And yeah, bring a wheelbarrow.

Stopped on a whim for real, not drive thru, dinner on our way to Austin. Really great food. The enchiladas with red sauce and the beans were awesome. Very reasonably proved too! Eat here!

After a long day on the road Virgies was a great way to end our day. There's nothing fancy about this place, just plain good old fashioned, homemade New Mexican food. Try the cheese crisp! We had a couple of the combo plates and even bought 2 dozen flour tortillas to take home. $3.50 a dz and their huge!

This place looks a little dumpy, but you've got to try it! The service was superb and the Mexican food was scratch made and delicious. I had the best Chili Relleno I've ever had and the enchiladas were exceptional. Our waiter was so eager to please and he was a promoter of their product. We really enjoyed our meal.

So much for the vaunted "customer service and friendly employees"! We were very weary after driving all day from Los Angeles, passing other acceptable restaurants in Arizona, just to make it to Virgie's before 9pm. Even telephoned from Flagstaff to verify closing time. When my wife and I finally walked in at 8:45 pm, staff members quickly eschewed us away saying "la cosina is closed!". We weren't even offered a cold tortilla. Instead, the young Maître De directed us to El Sombrero Restaurant admitting the food was "not as good". With few options, we followed his directions, "turn right at the bridge". Upon arriving at the restaurant, we noticed it was empty, but took our seats anyway. After sampling the "over-salted, store bought tortilla chips", we placed our orders. Simply stated, it was the worse Mexican food that I have ever tasted, and that taste remained for several hours despite multiple brushings. Bad form Virgies, you disappointed two travelers looking for a little hospitality!

We were in the car all day from Dallas and not only found this gem on Yelp but was also recommended by our Hampton Inn front desk mgr! Nothing fancy as far as the atmosphere for sure. (People selling jewelry are no big deal and immediately left & even said thank you when shook our heads 'No'. Makes one realize how fortunate we are). Between 3 of us we ordered cheese tamale (totally homemade and tasty), tostada and chicken enchilada (both really yummy). The rocked marg was too sweet but the chips & salsa were good. The treat to us was the red chili sauce. Outstanding balance of chili/pepper/hit of smoky flavor which we started dipping the chips into until we forced ourselves to stop. Our waitress Dina (?) was awesome and found us three sopapilla that weren't on the menu. They were obviously handmade as well as they came out piping hot w a jar of honey! GREAT place - fair prices but worth totally worth it!!

Delicious Mexican Food. Love the local clientele, obviously a favorite for the Native Americans in this area. Go! You will be glad you did. Beef tamale full of shredded beef, not just Masa. Beans and rice with great flavor. Taquitos and flour tortillas were homemade.

    Navajo tacos!

Nice waitstaff. Enjoyed house special beef stew. Added a side of green chile for extra kick. Beef was lean and shredded the way I like it. Hubby had taco enchilada plate. He liked it all but the beans. Two Gallupites recommended it.

First and foremost; two words, food poisoning. Secondly: our male server was great, however the glares and rude comments from the rest of the staff made it obvious that this Anglo was not welcome. Thirdly, "best Mexican food in town" really?(fellow yelpers) sorry this food was bad. I did not come close to finishing my meal, neither could my wife whom only ordered beans and rice with a side of tortillas. In conclusion. My recommendation, don't go here.

There appear to be two different Yelp listings for this one Gallup restaurant. I've previously reviewed Virgie's at the other listing. Here... I'll just say that it's excellent Northwestern New Mexico cuisine in a casual and friendly setting. Have eaten here many times over the years whenever in Gallup (twice during a recent vacation) and it never disappoints.

This is a Navajo restaurant that has been in Gallup for ever. When we went, the service was very slow. The food was ok, though, but we won't be back.

After 30 years I have finally eaten at Virgie's Restaurant. It's been a long time coming! Why so long? Cause my lame father would never take me here when I was a little girl, that should be considered child neglect. I was a little annoyed that I could only pull up two Mexican restaurants on Yelp.com that actually served margaritas (or any alcohol) with our food. When I have Mexican food I want a nice cold marg on the rocks on the side. Is that too much to ask for in this small town?! So tonight, I sat down with my big sis and we ate some Virgie's Mexican food along with a couple of margaritas. I ordered the 2 tacos and enchilada. My sister ordered the same but with a side of Chile Relleno. My only issue with Virgies is the spicyness or rather lack of. I requested the hottest sauce they had in house. I wasn't happy with the green chile. So I ordered some fresh sliced jalapenos that taste like sweet pickles. I then requested some Tapatio, they only had Tabasco. My goodness ... what's a girl gotta do to get some hot and spicy food! (Hope the owner did hear me haha) I settled for the Tabasco and drowned my meal in the bottled sauce. If it wasn't for the tacos and good margaritas I would of been seriously disappointed. The only thing that would bring me back to Virgie's is requesting my cousin as our waitress. It was a nice delight to see her and chat. Overall, I won't throw Virgie's completely under the bus. Maybe on the side of the street (pun intended per their location) but I won't write them off. Our waitress, not our cousin, was nice and accommodating. However, the little spat the boss was trying to have with our waitress, the owner, as we were leaving was uncalled for in front of customers. He could of taken that to the office. We met our waitress outside and gave her a couple suggestion for her boss at his age to calm his nasty demeanor but I can't talk about that on here.

In the process of moving from the East Coast to the West Coast, I spent the night in Gallup. The hotel desk clerk recommended Virgie Restaurant and Lounge for some delicious Mexican food. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the service is great and the food is even better.

Friendly staff however the food was sub par. The chips were stale the hot sauce was good as was the green chili .We must have been interrupted by at least 5 different people that were peddling everything from stuffed animals to Indian jewelry. Thumbs up on the margaritas.

Food was Amazing!! BUT the service is horrible. I waited there for 10mins without getting a server to ask for drinks or take our order. I had to flag down a waitress to get drinks. Waited another 30 to eat and then had to keep flagging down different servers to get refills & our check. Not sure if I'll eat here again. .but maybe I'll order for it to go.

Out of New Mexico for a week and desparate for a chile fix we took the first Gallup exit and stopped at the first place we came to that said Mexican Food. This was a real shot in the dark but if you find yourself in similar circumstances, this is the place to go. A good selection of New Mexican food with really top notch service. Good red chile and good green chile. My wife had a bowl of green with "poquito frijoles" and I had the triple beef enchillada plate red with an egg on top. The chips and salsa were good and fresh and the food was on the table very quickly. The sopapillas were good too although I've had better. The place was jam packed on Friday evening and everyone there was enjoying their meal and a cold beer. Absolutely not fancy at all but genuine New Mexico hospitality and very good food. I'll go there any time I'm passing through Gallup. Huge parking lot and easy access to I-40. Authentic food, friendly and attentive service.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
