Love this place!!! Have been coming to Lincoln, NE for four years now for work and found this GEM the first year. My coworkers and I have always enjoyed at least one dinner during the week as well as their brunch on the weekend. Both are wonderful. Never a bad service; wait staff have always been attentive, nice and fun. Food has also been definitely something "to write home to mom about"...absolutely delicious!! The roasted red pepper soup is the best I've ever had and is a must try. As an appetizer we get the baked brie which is just melt in your mouth delicious with candied apples inside. The steak is delicious too as it should be in steak country :-) If you visit you definitely won't be disappointed.

We have been to this restaurant many times in the past. It used to be well run with efficient staff. Now, it has declined into a poorly run place. The waiters are extremely slow. When we complained about the sun being in our face, they said the curtains were down and that they couldn't do anything more. Really? Other people complained too and nothing was done. There usually tremendous artichoke chicken was tough and hard to chew. When our friends complained, nothing was done. I really have a hard time believing this place will stay open with poor food and poor service. I hate to see this happen because I have really enjoyed going here with friends or on a date in the past. Hope things change quickly.

OK, another Lincoln NE restaurant under my belt (so to speak). Went here with my dining associate (from work as we are travelling from New York City) and we've been eating at the same half-dozen restaurants for a couple of months. So this is new for us and we were very pleased. We both had fish but I had the Orange Roughy off the menu (not the special) and she had a salmon dish off the menu. Yes.. you can get good fish in Lincoln! Our guacamole appetizer was first rate, and the service was very good. Even though the waiter appeared to be bus-boy and waiter and brought the desert tray, he never appeared rushed or frazzled. We walked from the Holiday Inn downtown, a few blocks south and one block east so parking was not a problem! When you're on business 4 nights a week for months, you need choices. This will be part of our round-robin of restaurants that we frequent; for sure.

French fusion, mostly American food. We stopped in one Sunday afternoon for a bite for lunch. The portions here can be really large. Something to consider before going on an all out blitz like a refugee returning from a quest int he wilderness. The service was good and the atmosphere was not bad. Parking can be a challenge like anywhere in and around downtown. Overall, great place for brunch.

This place deserves 5 stars just for the mac & cheese--gruyere cheese with pasta, chicken, and veggies! Very rich but incredible, especially on a cold Lincoln day. The rest of the experience was great. The wait staff was attentive, even with the 20+ people in our group. The atmosphere is friendly and rustic, but still upscale. It all contributes to an excellent meal. My only regret is that I didn't try any baked goods. Next time!

I was here the other night for dinner and was really pleased. We had a reservation and were seated right away. The atmosphere is cozy with a couple front rooms with big windows. Behind the greeting area is a long bar filled with pastries and delicious looking desserts. Our server was awesome, I really enjoyed interacting with him. So nice and polite and very helpful with gluten free options. At dessert he even gave me a quick tutorial on how to use the blow torch for the creme brûlée as I just bought the same one but haven't used it yet. There is a gluten free menu with a good amount of options and the vday specials they were also willing to try and make gluten free. We ordered the chips and guacamole that was prepared table side and was delicious. The chips were gluton-y so the server brought me out a generous portion of vegetables to eat it with. I ordered the bacon butter fillet which was cooked to an appropriate temperature and was good, sides were also tasty. My date had the ahi tuna and lobster special which was so beautifully plated and he said it was really good. I enjoyed the creme brûlée dessert and he liked his green gateau cake. Overall pleased with food. Food is a bit pricey but I think the quality is there as well as the portion size. I'll definitely be back!

Fresh guacamole and uniquely craveable warm spiced chips. Made table-side makes all the difference. Truffle fries with three dipping sauces are delicious. Rich, flavorful French onion soup. Silky creme brûlée. Quality coffee. Lots of tasty menu choices. Love the decor and ambiance. Wish they'd rework their Bloody Mary recipe because it's bland, but the fried bacon strip served with it is off the hook.

I'll keep this short and simple: GET THE LOBSTER BISQUE. A whole bowl. Then eat all of it, and order about 5 more. Amazingly delicious. Everything else was great too and at a very reasonable price point! Hurricanes were nice and strong :)

Lovely restaurant. We have always enjoyed it immensely when in Lincoln, but went to an extra effort yesterday. We arrived 4 minutes before the end of their daily lunch service, not realizing how late it was in the afternoon. We wanted to take a UNL student new to Lincoln to the Green Gateau and they graciously seated us. We did not, in any way, feel rushed by them and they thanked us as we left for dining there, even though were were there well past their 2 pm lunch cut off. In addition to wonderful food, really a class act!

We had to make a trip down to Lincoln on a cold Saturday but luckily had planned a stop at Green Gateau before heading back. The restaurant has a soothing and upscale decor, a pleasant and professional staff and an amazing brunch menu. After much debate (I tried to talk myself into the frog legs but wasn't sure that's what I wanted at 10 a.m.) we went with "two" beignets and I got the eggs Oscar Benedict (a traditional Benedict with Maryland lump crap). By "two" beignets, we did not ask how how many were in an order and there were 2 for. We had one with lemon curd and the other with strawberry jam. I LOVED the strawberry jam and Chantilly sauce and the beignets themselves were HUGE, fried to perfection - light and fluffy despite the appearance of being doughy. The Benedict was well prepared and the presentation was well executed. The prices for the meal were VERY reasonable and the I am glad we made the trip - definitely a "to do" when in town.

Food art. Food porn. Foodgasm... the vibe was a little iffy. Couldn't quite tell if they were going for fine dining or not. But it didnt matter. Our server was very farmiliar with all menu options and helpful in recommending some tasty options. I landed on a duck dinner that was FULL of flavor to the last bite. Slid right into a coffee with my creme brulee, leaving me in a food coma. Bring your date!

One of THE most favorite places I've had brunch at in Lincoln. I'd go just to have a plate of their bacon. My dining partner and I were lucky enough to get in on a Sunday after a patiently waiting (we weren't aware of how busy they'd be and that reservations would be highly encouraged). Definitely a place I'd like to hit up again if in the area on a Sunday morning again.

This place insanely delicious! The eggs Benny were to DIE FOR! The pastries and baked items are fantastic, and the service is stunning! Great location, but pretty crowed on a weekend. Definitely a great breakfast spot!

Delicious Sunday brunch. I had the Croque Madame with a perectly cooked egg and tasty hollandaise. The best part of the meal was the bloody mary, which came with a pickle spear and a crispy piece of bacon- unique! Attentive, friendly staff.

We went for dessert and drinks. At least that's what we intended. I had one of the seasonal cocktails, and my husband ordered a flight of wine. We also selected two deserts (including the signature Green Gateau), but we were so impressed that we decided to take two more deserts home with us for breakfast the next morning. They were all fantastic, but it's no surprise the place shares the name with their signature cake - it was amazing! The wait staff was attentive, helpful, and friendly. Plus, they didn't judge us for taking dessert home for breakfast. Next time we are in Lincoln, we'll definitely be back for a full dinner.

This is my favorite restaurant in Lincoln! I love the atmosphere - it feels like a little tea room. I always get the Pick 2 Combo with the Gateau Spring Salad. This salad is amazing! This is also one of the only restaurants where I order a beverage that isn't water or alcohol - their Gateau Iced Tea is a blend of strawberry and apricot tea and it is a must try! Their brunch is really great as well and they accomodate large groups, which is always a plus.

Wonderful brunch. The iced tea is a must with any meal. Don't forget the desert! The staff is knowledgeable and professional. They enjoy their job

My second time coming and it was AMAZING as the first time! The server was a very nice man, talked about his wife. Adorable. He was very informative and funny. The environment is so classy and sophisticated so I definitely recommend dressing up a little. The LOBSTER BISQUE IS A MUST. My boyfriend prefers the red pepper soup because he doesn't like seafood, but if you do, ITS AMAZING. You get a croissant with butter everytime and it's just perfect. So light and fluffy. Yummmmy. I ordered the special Shrimp and Crab! I'm a seafood lover clearly lol. My boyfriend ordered the chicken pasta, I forgot the name. His was delicious as well! And of course we ordered dessert. They present all the deserts in front of you and I think that's so cool. The server explained what it all was. I chose the Green Gateau just because I loved it the last time. And Jacob got the Tiramisu, both so yummy! Can't wait to go back for another special occasion

I am a big supporter of Green Gateau! There is a reason GG is established within the community, be it their longtime kitchen staff who know how to create a great menu or Lori the manager who genuinely cares about your experience! The food speaks for itself. Having worked there , I had the opportunity to try a number of dishes and loved every one of them! My personal favorite was the Croque Monsieur(lunch)/Madame(breakfast)! By far one of the best things on the menu. As a previous server I was impressed with the amount of training they provided as well as the mentorship of their Trainers. Christine was my favorite, she genuinely cared about your success. As with most restaurants there were servers who were only there for themselves but management was always willing to listen to complaints and take action when needed. I will definitely refer GG to anyone traveling through or locals who haven't been. You will be forever addicted, especially if you try the Croque!

Best brunch in town. You must make reservations if you want to come here Sunday morning though because the wait can be long. The eggs Benedict are great as is the quiche. My favorite is the chocolate espresso muffin, there's nothing like it.

The service was exceptional, the true standout in our experience. Blake was our server, a university engineering student, who carried on a great conversation, while guiding us through the food and wine menu. What I love about a great restaurant is the time that a server will take with a table -- the guacamole made fresh at the table, an interlude to discuss shared experiences, and the patience to allow a table too much time to discuss a dessert. Regarding the food, I was thrilled that the jerked chicken was powerfully flavorful and legitimately spicy.

I came here with some co-workes for lunch on sunday. The portions are very generous for what I was paying. I ordered the corned beef hash and there a few appetizers. Its not authentic french food at all. Its more like american food with a sprinkle of french influence. The only think that french was probably the name of the place and the french toast. i would come back here again since the food was pretty good, price was reasonable and the service was fast and frinedly.

I reserved a private room for my husband and our parents and siblings for lunch after our small Capitol building wedding (12 of us total). I reserved the room a week in advance with no problem at all. We arrived and the service was wonderful! Food was great and we could not have been happier to end our wedding day here. Can't wait to return!

I love Green Gateau. The food is excellent with many good choices. I especially recommend the grilled vegetables and quark. I've only given 4 stars because the prices are a bit high.

Another also-ran pseudo bistro. I've long been perplexed by the astronomical rating of this place, and I'm sure I'll get a lot of upset reactions for not joining the cult of mediocrity, but I really don't care. The single worst thing I've ever eaten in a restaurant of any kind in Lincoln is the potato salad at The Green Gateau. Cold, slimy, and flavorless. It was as if someone had mixed some steamed onions and boiled potatoes with a milk and fat free sour cream sauce. No salt, no seasoning, no acid, no flavor at all. Bad taste memory. Probably replaced a good one from when I was a kid. Unforgivable. I had it as a side with a reuben that was mediocre at best, though I've had a lot of restaurant reubens and they are almost always disappointing. The Green Gateau was generous enough to inexplicably put diced red potatoes in theirs, just in case it got too close to tasting like something. All arguments about why people eat out aside, it's just not acceptable in my mind to charge these prices when the quality isn't there. I'm willing to pay good money for good food. I don't feel like that's the deal you get here based on my experiences. I've been dragged here under protest a few times for family function breakfasts, lunches, and brunches and have never left with any feeling other than disappointment. Redeeming qualities: + The prices are high for the quality of food, but the quantity is sufficient for a meal unlike a lot of "fancy" places. If you can choke it down, at least you won't leave hungry. Just feeling unfulfilled. + The servers have never insulted me to my face, nor done anything overtly racist at my table. I've read a lot of over-the-top (probably fake or heavily embellished) reviews just absolutely roasting comically poor service at places. I haven't been wowed enough at the Green Gateau that the service stuck out to me as special, but also haven't had any horror stories that stick out, either. If service is more important to you than flavor, this could be your place. + I didn't get violently ill. No food poisoning is a really strong selling point for any place that serves food for money and definitely a big reason I didn't go all out one star. "Hey, our food isn't poison! And we have a fancy-ish atmosphere for Lincoln." A great slogan that they can use for free. + It's like crack for self-proclaimed foodie women in their early 20s who don't know how to cook. If you have a female date who is still in college or around graduation age, take them here if you're too lazy or inept to make something better at home for them.

Not impressed. I have been a regular for years, the filet tonight was the worst I've had in recent memory, and the creme brûlée was covered with barely warmed sugar crystals. Beware, I may have just caught them on an off night...

Not worth the wait. Was there on Mother's Day and had a reservation for 11 am and was not seated till 11:30 am, by that time I didn't feel like having breakfast. Ordered a chicken salad sandwich that was bland. Do not recommend for lunch. Didn't get our order till after 12 pm. Very bad planning.

We have been to this restaurant 3 times on our way to Chicago from Colorado (as Lincoln is our 1/2 way stopping point) for dinner. The food is impeccable! The duck sausage is a must and their sauces are totally on point. This is a must eat-at restaurant! So french and so delicious. Major attention to detail down to even the vegetables on the side that every other chef forgets about. Perfection. We'll continue to frequent this restaurant as long as they exist!

We came here for brunch while family was in town, based on a recommendation from my co-worker. The atmosphere is quaint and homey. It is a little tight when walking through the crowded restaurant, but that's to be expected in an old building. Our service was wonderful. I can't remember our server's name, but he was very nice and explained the menu perfectly. I ordered the bloody mary on his recommendation and was SO glad I did! It came with bacon in it! The food was delicious. We ordered beignets to share before our entrees came out, which was kind of mistake because they were so huge. They came with lemon curd and strawberry preserves to dip in. "Cloud's of happiness" is how my uncle described them. I had the huevos rancheros. After the beignets, I could barely touch my plate, but the little I did have was delicious! I'll be returning the next time we have family in town. I don't think this will become a regular brunch spot just because it requires a reservation if you have any hopes of getting a table in less than an hour. That does not groove so well with my Sunday morning sleep-in schedule.

Came here for lunch with colleagues today and was pleasantly surprised by the food! All the soups we got was good, frog legs were decent too, albeit a bit over battered/peppered. I got the French connection with was so good and everybody else liked their food too. The portions were huge by the way. It was interesting that you can get a muffin as a side item, but it was amazing! Chocolate espresso, it's not a side item though, definitely a dessert. For dessert, we split the pear cannoli and creme brûlée, which they torch at the table. They were pretty good but not the best I've had. The bad thing about this place was that there were a lot of flies flying around, not good for a restaurant. But food and service-wised, great experience.

The food here is delicious. I've eaten here multiple times and have always had a great experience. The breakfast crepes are out of this world good. The breakfast muffins are super yummy. You can't go wrong with their lunch you pick two combos. I got a soup (great) and roasted veggies with cheese (perfection). Staff are attentive and super friendly. The only thing that left a sour taste in my mouth is that when I got a cannoli to go one day I checked my bill and saw it was $6. A $6 cannoli is super overpriced and just absurd. It also was mixed with peaches and tasted like margarine and was just yuck. I was not pleased about that.

I've been here a few times with my girlfriend and I've had a positive experience each time. The wait staff is friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic (the interior is way nicer than outside). There is pretty limited parking, and it's been pretty busy each time I've gone (dinner, brunch) so having a reservation wouldn't be a bad idea either. I've only ever gotten the seafood, since I don't usually go out to eat at places and order things I can make myself. The calamari is my favorite appetizer, and I also really like the truffle fries. It's a little pricy as I'd expect a little larger portion for what I pay, and the wait is just a tad longer than I'd like, but at the same time it's good food, and they're serving lots of people. Also, it seems like they're pretty family friendly as I always see children, but they also have a bar and plenty of wines to choose from. Definitely recommended.

Bad service and terrible management. Tried calling to make a reservation this morning, and was put on hold, and forgotten, three times. After the third time, a manager picked up and informed us that they do not take reservations. Which I know is untrue, because we have made reservations many times before. The only reason we continue going back to this restaurant is for the amazing food - definitely not the service. We have been blatantly ignored on multiple occasions. Food has been forgotten, and then not brought to us at all. We have had to ask to get refills of water and coffee. And servers have walked past us two, three, or four times before checking back on our table. All in all, the only acceptable words to describe our experiences at this establishment is BAD SERVICE.

I've been to this place multiple times and let me tell you... every one of those visits was amazing. Their deserts are delicious. Some of my favorite entrees would have to be the Lavosh with Duck and the Stuffed Rainbow Trout! Would MOST DEFINITELY come back here if i'm in the area.

I love this place. We went here for the first time last night for my birthday. The food was delicious. Our server, Doug, was wonderful. It will now be our Go-To place for special occasions. We really want to try brunch and lunch, too. We had the Calamari to start (mix the two sauces, the hybrid sauce is great), then we each had a cup of the lobster bisque (get it... just do it). I had the french connection, and I have a love for a proper french dip, but this was my favorite of all time. So so so good. Husband got a special which was grilled frog's legs, beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and onion strings with a Bearnaise sauce. He was in heaven. For desert, he got the chocolate marquis cake... excellent. I would have tried the lemon cake, but I was really in the mood for creme brulee. It was good, but next time I will get a cake. Bottom line, it was a perfect evening, and we will be back.

I love Green Gateau. We usually go for brunch on Sundays and this place has some great food. I love the deserts too. I don't think we have ever had a bad meal at this place, although the service can be a little slow and parking is horrible. You usually have to park about a block away, so as long as you go into it knowing you will have to do a little walking, its not bad. I probably could use some extra walking anyway!

It isn't easy to find an interesting and varied menu in Lincoln. Green Gateau has that and more. Our favorite restaurant in Lincoln for any meal. We don't love the location so try to go at the beginning or end of the hours and have never experienced parking problems. It can be very busy, but wait staff is prompt, friendly and attentive. Many years ago, the restaurant decor had the feel of grannie's attic, but is now refreshed and simplified and more sophisticated. Portions are large so eat half and same room for dessert, because they have an excellent selection. We like breakfast out, and this is THE place to go. Our evening meals have been outstanding. Even their house salad is yummy. Do give the Green Gateau an opportunity to delight you....

After a week of restaurant mishaps the Green Gateau was just what I needed! The food was wonderful, the service was impeccable, the prices are great, and the bloody marys are fantastic! I don't have enough good things to say about the Green Gateau. It's always been one of my favorites, and it always will be! They never disappoint! Highly recommended!! Go Now!

A neighborhood restaurant for those who live in Lincoln and visitors from out of town. We booked reservations and visited as part of our anniversary. Inside of the restaurant is lots of wood and a long bar. It does not look like much from the outside, but inside was nice. Great service from Sue who was very friendly, informative, and attentive. Menu has a good selection and the wine list is fairly extensive. Started off with a 2008 Helfrich Gewurztraminer - decent. Appetizer: Baked Brie en Croûte - Mild & buttery-soft cheese with caramelized pears and cranberries, baked in a french pastry shell, served with crostini and balsamic truffle glaze - tasty Lobster Bisque - absolutely delicious, creamy and great flavor Entrees: Macaroni and Cheese - Green Gateau serves a crazy Mac and Cheese, you pick your ingredients - large macaroni sautéed with cream, butter, sharp cheddar and gruyère cheese. baked au gratin with sourdough bread and parmesan crumbs. choose up to (2) ingredients: truffle oil, ham, green chili, salsa, lobster sauce, bacon, chicken, duck sausage, caramelized onion, prosciutto, smoke rib ends, mushrooms, jalapenos, spinach, broccoli, tomato or blue cheese - Wife really liked hers - she went with truffle oil and chicken. Candied Walnut Crusted Salmon - Norwegian salmon fillet seared with a candied walnut crust, served over sauteed spinach and wild rice pilaf, finished with lemon zest vinaigrette. - Mine was good, but would have liked the candied walnut crust to come across a bit stronger. Wild rice pilaf was good as well as the spinach. Dessert: Chocolate Marquise - Alternating layers of creamy chocolate Marquis, bittersweet chocolate ganache, mocha butter cream and dark chocolate cake. Topped with chocolate ganache, and chocolate curls. Lemon Italian Crème Cake - Creamy layer of lemon mascarpone filling between 2 layers of moist cream cake and dusted with powdered sugar. Served with raspberry melba. We liked both our desserts. Worth a visit if you are looking for a place to try in Lincoln. Side Note - Not a lot of parking. There is a small parking lot on one side of the restaurant. As you approach on the one way street, the lot is immediately before the restaurant, do not go fast or you will be past the entrance before you know it and have to drive around the block to try again.

WONDERFUL! This place has something for everyone. The food and service is exceptional. I had the "The Chips". The fish was cooked perfectly and the fries weren't too salty. We had a refill on our drinks before they were even half empty! The Gateau Tea is a MUST! This is a great place to take your family, parents, business associates, or even a date! I can't wait to go back! I wish they had a location in Omaha.

My favorite place to dine in Lincoln. Every menu item I have tried has been wonderful. If you like duck, don't miss out on their Duck Bangers and Mash. I would also wager that there isn't a better Mac and Cheese in town. Add the chocolate ganache to finish sweet. I can personally recommend brunch, lunch or dinner. Also great for takeout.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Lincoln. The lobster bisque is amazing! There is not any lobster chunks but you can still taste the lobster. A bowl of the soup tastes really expensive but it is only $4. I usually get the french connection minus the mushrooms and onions. It's basically a french dip sandwich with bacon. They have really good fries and I am picky about sides. I also like their blue cheese potato salad. I haven't tried any of their desserts because I'm too full after eating dinner.

I ate here for the for the second time with my husband. We were seated in a quiet booth which is exactly what we were hoping for. The atmosphere was very quaint semi romantic. We started with the truffle fries which were good, but we've had better they were lacking a little flavor the first time I had them here they were better. I had the tasters trio that started with the seafood bisque that was amazing as usual. My main course was the Orange Roughy. I substituted the summer squash and zucchini for asparagus. My fish was lacking a little in the flavor dept however the sauce was very good and my asparagus was very woody. My husband had the Duck Bangers and Mash. His was delicious! It's very hard to cook good duck especially for someone whose been hunting it for years! For dessert I had the Creme Brule again I've had this before and loved it however this time it had no vanilla so I sent it back and they were very gracious and took it off the bill. My husband had the long horn filled with marscapon and pears with caramelized pears on the side and a chocolate sauce. To die for! I had one taste after mine was sent back and it made my mouth smile! Overall it was good just an off night for the chef. We will definitely be back!

Easily in the top five best restaurants in town. Be sure to grab a bowl of their roasted red pepper soup - it's life changing! They also make a fantastic chicken fried steak that's is made to order with fresh meat. Also check out the fish & chips, very good and the fish is always fresh. The truffle fries are out of this world. Service is usually good, but I have had very bad service on a handful of visits.

I've always loved eating here. Never had a bad experience. The food is always good, the staff is friendly and the pricing is great. It has a lot of personality and an European flair, which is reflected in their menu. The location is not the best for larger groups as it can make parking difficult and sometimes the restaurant can be too dark and feel a bit claustrophobic. Having said that, still gets 5 stars.

This is one of my favorite places in Lincoln. It's hard to find at first if you don't know where you are looking, but it's absolutely worth it to go. I've been here several times for birthdays and special occasions. It's a little pricey, but the food is so delicious and the portions are just right that I never pay attention to that. The staff are very friendly and always willing to tell you their favorite dish.

My first experience with the Green Gateau was almost 20 years ago on Valentine's Day. The food was wonderful, and the dessert sold me for life. Though I no longer live in Lincoln, I visit Green Gateau every chance I get. With all the years of scrumptious meals, I'm not sure where to even begin. Food: Those who have read my other reviews, know that I adore desserts. I don't say this lightly when I say that Green Gateau is one of my all-time favorite places for dessert. I always have a terrible time deciding between the signature Green Gateau cake and the Chocolate Oblivion Truffle Torte, my two favorites. The Green Gateau may not be a favorite for everyone, but I love it, even though cake desserts are rarely on my list of favorites. I've had all types of dishes, from a cheese platter, to full meat main dishes, and never been disappointed. The presentation of the food is always elegant, though the prices are far from standard fine dining. I'm an avid tea drinker, and Green Gateau has its own special blend of strawberry and apricot flavors that I order every time. It's popular enough that the local coffee shop, The Mill, sells the blend (or they did last time I was there). Atmosphere & Service: The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite charming, offering various rooms for more intimacy than a fully open restaurant. The decor is reminiscent of an earlier era European eatery without being gaudy. The servers are always pleasant and competent. You can enjoy a meal in casual wear or your finest without feeling out of place. If you're looking to dine on weekend night during prime time, I recommend reservations. On a holiday like Valentine's Day, reservations are a must. Parking: There is off-street parking next to (off 10th Street) and behind (off L Street) the restaurant, a boon for the downtown area. It might be hard to get a spot at a really busy time, but otherwise we've never had trouble finding a spot in one of the two lots. Overall, I recommend Green Gateau for any meal of the day. My personal favorite: Stop by for tea and a mouthwatering dessert at high tea time and relax with a friend.

I could write a lengthy review, raving about the place, but will simply say that it is the best food in town. So often I find myself saying that a place had good food "for Lincoln" since the cuisine scene is pretty bad here. But the Gateau is truly good by ANY standards. Truly wonderful fare, great service, and prices just high enough to keep out the riffraff.

Oh boy. I went to Green Gateau for lunch today with my husband. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a waitress is critical of my selection. "Yes, for now I just want Ice water while I look at the menu" " Is that all?" " I'll start with a cup of soup and a coffee and a croissant." "Just the cup of soup then??" Its like, yea, I get it, you are computing your tip in your head based on the final anticipated bill, you have made that excruciatingly clear. But here's the thing, If I find you attentive and friendly, and I only order a 6 dollar lunch, I will tip 100 percent instead of 20. I think tips should start at 5 bucks, no matter how small of a meal I order. But I only gave my waitress 10 percent today, and I regret giving that much. The lobster bisque was salty and my croissant was stale. I told the waitress the croissant was stale, and instead of whisking it away and bringing me a fresh one, she said as if she had to personally go and make one from scratch " did you.....did you want me to get you a new one?"

This restaurant has a touch of European quality to it without being pretentious or over priced. The breakfast brunch is the stuff of legends and is packed but well worth the wait on weekends. I mainly visit this place on a weekday for a lunch because I love the peppercorn battered Mahi-Mahi fish and chips. You get 3 fillets with an appropriate pile of fries to compliment the dish all for a very affordable price. They have their own unique and tangy homemade tartar sauce and malt vinegar upon request. The beautiful old wood decor and various different rooms to eat in give you a real sense of intimacy. The waitstaff are very efficient and well dressed like a proper restaurant should have, something often lacking here in Lincoln. This place is an institution and their dinner menu is splendid. The Roasted Duck breast never fails to impress. I for one am not a dessert person but you have to indulge in a Creme Brulee which is heated table side.

This place is my go-to place in Lincoln. All their food is fantastic, and their handmade burgers are a thing of genius, (I always ask for mine on a croissant, so delicious). Also, the place itself is very quaint, perfect for any occasion. There service is usually pretty nice, and there are some servers that are spectacular (Jessie, that's you)

Best food and service in Nebraska and all neighboring states!!!I would love for them to be open all the time!

The service is great, decor likewise. However, I was not as impressed with the food: too rich, overstocked, and drowning in greasy sauces. The gateau burger (house specialty--$16) came with additional meats and a fried egg--all on top of a bed of French fried in CHEESE sauce (think ballpark nacho variety)! The huge duck fois andouille sausage that accompanied the massive chicken dish was too gamey for my taste--at least served whole, like a pungent brown log. All on top of a mash and grilled vegetables. More is less--they should simplify their recipes.

Was here two nights before on a Wednesday eve, had the Boulevard wheat beer, very refreshing. I took advantage of the Taster's Choice on the menu, 4 courses for $25, super good deal. Started with a house salad on top of a parmesan crisp with light oil and vinegar, except the crisp was a little soggy, but still tasty. The lobster bisque was yummy, I could drink a gallon of it, lucky it was just a cup, saved me from an extra workout. Main course was Escolar, similar to white tuna, firm and meaty, it was cooked perfectly, very moist and clean. For desert I got creme brulee, even get to pick white or brown sugar to go on top, I chose brown and our waitress caramelized it in front of us, nice touch! Since Friday was the last night in town, we came back for another round, a little more crowded this time. I decided not to get the 4 course and just had a salad and the potato encrusted salmon, it was the same salad again, and again the crisp was not crispy, they need to work on that, or don't call it a crisp! The salmon was on the dry side, but not too bad, they could put a little more flavor into the red pepper coulis, instead it only added color next to the mango salsa. We all enjoyed our dinners both times, the waitress was more attentive the first time. They did have a big party in the back the second time, so that usually slows everything down.

Wonderful food! The red pepper soup and the lobster bisque were both excellent. Loved the chicken crepe casserole and the Croque Monsieur. Perfectly cooked asparagus. Sad we had no room for dessert--they looked amazing. Loved the wine selection too!

Great hidden gem in the land of marginal "college" food. Upscale bistro type food at very reasonable prices. Pros: Good selection of well prepared/presented dishes. Crab cake croissant first rate and huge. Calamari done perfectly, and nice selection of dipping sauces. Cons: Truffle fries with no decernable truffle flavour.

There aren't many restaurants in Lincoln that compare to the Green Gateau. The meals are consistently good and the staff is kind and accommodating. The past few times we have eaten at the Green Gateau, it has been over lunch on a Saturday, which may be the best time to go. They aren't busy, and you hardly have to wait for food or check. I have ordered the cheese burger, a salmon dish, and the crab croissant. My husband has ordered the club, among other dishes. Everything is to die for, and I would strongly recommend the crab croissant if you enjoy crab cakes. They make a delicious citrus remoulade and I swear there is a pound of crab piled on fresh croissant. To top it all off, you must order the iced tea. The Mill (Haymarket coffee house) creates a special blend of tea leaves specifically for the Green Gateau. It is so good that we ask for a pitcher for the two of us to share. Lastly, I have to give a special mention to the staff at Green Gateau for making our 'marriage day' so wonderful. We had just been legally married, and decided to have lunch together at the Gateau. Upon asking why we were dressed up, we said that we had just been married. The manager was floored, congratulated us, offered champagne, dessert, etc, to help us celebrate. We had really been planning on a quiet lunch together, but their excitement and happiness for us just really made it a lunch to remember.

It has been a long time since I've been to the Green Gateau. I really enjoy their Sunday bistro type menu. This restaurant, in my opion, is a little bit more for the ladies. Coffee and tea with a nice brunch menu. I found myself coming here on a regular basis after church as it was just down the street. Give it a try, I'm sure it's better that Village Inn or IHOP.

Came here for a bachelorette party and the staff was great! Very attentive and took care of us well. A very nice selection of wines and craft beers as well as various cocktails, sangrias, etc. We got guacamole, lavosh, and baked brie for appetizers and all were excellent, especially the lavosh!! I tried a friend's lobster bisque and it was really good, I've never had it before so I hope I haven't had the bar set too high. I had the roasted duck breast and it was delicious but I think I expected it to be even better, I'll probably try something else the next time I go. Many in my party had variations on the mac and cheese and all were happy with their choices. We were all too full to try a dessert but they looked phenomenal!

3.5 stars Came here for brunch. There were some real highs and some slight misses. I had the corned beef hash, which wasn't quite what I was expecting. It had large pieces of corned beef (made at the premises) -- it was tender and delicious, with large pieces of potatoes. Duck sausage was a little disappointing. Service was very friendly, but a little slow (though I will say they were busy). All of the food did look appetizing and certainly would return.

on a recommendation i decided to give this place a try. this is by far and away the best breakfast place in lincoln. the food is constantly delicious, the staff friendly and attentative and always have new specials daily. you can't go wrong with the following for breakfast: chicken fried steak, eggs benedict, gateau burrito or corned beef hash. everything is always cooked to perfection, great portion sizes and served with fantastic homestyle potatoes. on a recent visit, i went for lunch since the breakfast is always so amazing. i ordered the daily special, a southwest angus burger and let me tell you, not only one of the best burgers in town, but the best burgers i had ever tried. the angus beef was fresh and cook perfectly, smothered in melted cheese and the aoli sauce was just devine with great flavor and spice. my wife had the other daily special, the chicken mozzarella quiche which was good, but i felt average in taste and portion size. on a side note, my wife says the green gateau cheesecake is a must for dessert with each visit.

I ordered the salmon salad. It was a bit unwieldy. Sure it looked pretty but the lettuce leaves were huge. The salmon, however, was perfectly cooked and the house made warm bacon dressing was tasty.

Great place, not very expensive. You will probably expend as much as in a chain restaurant such as olive garden but this places have more exquisite gourmet food.

Over Thanksgiving, I went out for dinner with my dear friend Hannah in good ole' Lincoln, Nebraska. Lincoln is home to 250,000 people, the best college football team in the nation (the Huskers), and a phallic shaped capitol building. It is also home to a little French restaurant called The Green Gateau. I don't admit this very often, but I'm giving all of the credit for this meal to Miss Hannah. She truly picked a fantastic restaurant for us to dine in [the girl's got taste, ladies and gentlemen]. Not only that, but she truly found a diamond in the rough. Don't get me wrong, being right next to a run down Enterprise isn't exactly enough to deter me, but I will admit that I sometimes judge a book by it's cover. That's why The Green Gateau especially impressed me; I would have never expected to find such great food inside. When we walked in we found a sophisticated, polished atmosphere. Dim lighting, light music, intimate table settings; basically, all men in Lincoln should consider taking their wives and girlfriends here for a romantic date night. It was also the perfect place for two friends to catch up, drink great wine, and eat ah-mah-zing food. The event all started when our rather perky waitress came over and offered us a sample of Black Stallion, which was a delightful Cabernet Sauvignon with an "amazing finish" [as the previously mentioned perky waitress informed us]. Now I'm no wine connoisseur, but it was definitely better than the $10 bottles of Cab that I usually buy from Schnucks--SO, when the waitress offered us a "$75 bottle for only $40," we couldn't turn it down [whether or not that was a legit deal, I'm not sure. Oh well.]. Even better, purchasing a bottle of wine justifies a free appetizer at The Green Gateau--bing, bing, bing, bing... jackpot! For our appetizer we ordered the coconut shrimp lollipops. These consisted of fried shrimp breaded with coconut flakes, served in a martini glass with orange marmalade, mango salsa, and a hint of horseradish and lemon. The salty, buttery firmness of shrimp combined with the crunchy coconut and sweet salsa--oh baby, it was the perfect pairing. Plus, two jumbo shrimp was the perfect amount for an appetizer--just a taste, not a meal, the way appetizers should be. Once we had polished off the appetizer (and a glass of wine each), the waitress delivered a steaming hot crescent roll and cup of butter. Leave it to the French to get the bread part of the meal absolutely spot on. Flakey, buttery, delicious. Holy cow. I was glad that the waitress only brought us one roll each. Of course, the entrée was truly the main event. (Yeah, yeah, I'm sure that you've all been reading along and thinking, "Get to the good stuff woman!") Well, here it is. For the main course I ordered the Peppercorn Pork and Hannah ordered the Beer Braised Pot Roast. Both of our meals were moan-worthy. My meal featured sautéed pork rib eye medallions flamed in brandy (yum yum yum) with peppercorns and mushrooms, and served over Yukon gold potatoes (plus it came with some nice julienned vegetables). Hannah's meal was a tender pot roast braised in nut-brown ale with carrots, onions, celery & sliced mushrooms. It was also served over Yukon gold potatoes and it was topped with onion strings. Here's the rundown. Both of our meats were "cut-with-a-fork" tender. Seriously, Hannah just drug the prongs of her fork across her roast and it peeled away. My pork was firmer (but for pork, I think that's a good thing). Plus, the taste was absolutely to die for--the brandy and peppercorn combination was savory and sweet and Hannah's beef had a great nutty taste. Plus, our potatoes were creamy, buttery (uhm, has anyone else notice a pattern here?), and gone in an instant! Of course, as if these delicacies weren't quite enough, we decided to order dessert (hey, we still had a little wine left and a lot of talking left to do). The waitress brought over a tray featuring chocolate cakes, cheesecake, carrot cake, and even s'mores! Hannah went for the chocolate cake and I went for the carrot cake. *Drool.* I'll admit, I was amazingly full from the meal and had to take most of my cake home, but the cream-cheesey deliciousness was a perfect way to round out the meal. So, folks, what did we learn from this (rather long) review? Lesson one: the men of Lincoln should take their women to this restaurant. And Lesson two: The Green Gateau has amazing, melt-in-your-mouth French cuisine and you definitely want to go there.

Whenever we make it to Lincoln, especially around brunch time, this is our go-to spot! There aren't many options for breakfast in Lincoln, especially with decent atmosphere. They have great dinner items as well ( a great lobster bisque) and we usually can't leave there without grabbing a piece to cake to go. It's a great value for the quality and price. If you haven't made it here yet, you're missing out on one of the great places in Lincoln.

I came in here for breakfast/brunch on Saturday with my boyfriend and his family. We sat on the patio and I never went inside, but it seems like a really cute quaint place. Too bad that I have to agree 100% with the previous reviewer who said the service was apathetic. At best. Like I said, we were sitting on the patio, so I really have no idea how busy they were inside. Maybe they were completely swamped. We had to ask repeatedly for water and place settings. When we got our coffee it was lukewarm. On the plus side, everyone was really pleased with the food. I wasn't feeling very hungry so I had the scones. My order arrived with 2 large, hot, yummy scones and some of the best strawberry jam I have ever had. I was really hoping for some clotted cream in true Brit fashion, but there was none. I could have sworn it said it came with cream on the menu though. Oh well that jam was really good and I don't even like jam usually! I was also eyeing my bf's mom's bacon which looked nice and thick. I'm not sure if/when I will be back in the midwest again, but I would come back. I just hope they work on their service!

One of my favorite places to take Mom for a Mother's Day lunch or brunch. I've tried a number of entrees, both breakfast & lunch...none of them have ever disappointed. Love the Green Gateau cake but my favorite is the chocolate flourless cake...to die for. AWe always make sure to take extra coinage for parking meters in case the difficult-to-navigate southside parking lot is full.

One of my favorite restaurants in Lincoln. They try to use local/sustainable/organic when they can all year round from cheese to meat to produce. They have the best brunch in town and their menu is reasonably priced. The specials are generally a little more expensive but well worth it for something like perfectly cooked seafood in the Midwest. The service is generally good. The more experienced waitstaff will talk softly and won't bother you more than necessary - things I really appreciate in a bistro-type restaurant. The manager has never steered us wrong as sommelier and keeps an extensive and frequently changing wine list. Try the lobster bisque and the house dessert. Stay away from the crème brule; the custard lacks in flavor and consistency.

  • Ed C.

It was OK, the cost is a little high and the quality of the food is definitely not worth the cost. I enjoyed watching a woman complain to the manager because it was to loud and she couldn't hear herself talk. That was pretty much the highlight of the morning.

Went for Sunday brunch with my friend. We were rather hungover and not dressed up, and that made us stick out like a sore thumb, but we didn't care. Sat outside. I had the chicken fried steak and it was perfectly cooked but had a little too much breading for my tastes. Eggs and hash browns were also cooked perfectly. Great meal! I couldn't finish it all, and that is rare for me. The waitress adjusted her style to us (since we were not swanky and up-scale, but hungover with baseball caps on backwards), and that was very much appreciated. She was cute, witty, and personable; we really liked that. Service was kind of slow, that's the only reason it does not get five stars. It's pretty pricey, but you actually get a well-prepared meal, so it's worth it. Only complaint: they need to put some WD40 on the door!

I was here for a wedding rehearsal dinner so I don't know if the massive number of people had an effect on the food and service but it was so-so. The food was not that great, it tasted a bit salty and with an overwhelming amount of different flavors to try and make it "tasty," but it just kind of made the steak dish a hodgepodge of flavor rather than an enjoyable, focused eating experience. Also, the groom-to-be ordered a fish dish that came out encased in the bag it was steamed in - GROSS! The service was really slow and not good at keeping dishes straight but again, that could have been due to the sheer size of our party.

Well, I ended up trying the Roast Duck, Lamb & Pinot Noir, and the Sirloin. First, the Duck. It had a very strong smell to it and didn't taste very good at all. Second, The Lamb & Pinot was decent. It was the best one of the 3, which isn't to say it's good, its just not as bad as the other two. Third, the Sirloin tasted like what old sweaty socks smelled like. That thing was gross. The service was decent and the salad was good. The Lobster soup was also pretty disgusting. Overall, a place that I will never go back to. I don't think I've given many 1 stars but this one definitely get's a 1 just because I can't rate it any lower.

Absolutely love this place! One of those places you find yourself wanting to try everything on the menu. Buy a bottle of wine and get a free appetizer? Yes, please. The old staple, fish and chips, is amazing and has a little twist with sesame seeds in the batter. Dessert carts are my favorite and this place does not leave you wanting. Highly recommended for a date fellas.

The Green Gateau is nice restaurant with a good atmosphere. It's a very romantic and cozy place, so it's good for dates and small get togethers. I come here a lot with my 3-4 best friends. They even have live music sometimes. I've been here for brunch and dinner and both are very impressive. The menu is a bit eclectic and you can get just about anything from enchiladas to salads to roasted duck. The Beef Monterrey is delicious if you're looking for a sandwich (it's basically a french dip). As for the entrees, I've never gone wrong with the salmon, the roasted duck, or the gorgonzola pasta. You can add a small side salad to each meal too, which I always tend to do. Their salads come with this crispy baked cheese garnish (I'm not quite sure how to describe it) that is SO good. It tastes kind of like a cheese-it, but it compliments the salad really well. ALWAYS SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT because it's probably some of the best you can find in Lincoln. Sometimes, I come here just for dessert. Coming from someone who has the biggest sweet tooth in the world, you can trust my judgment when I say you cannot go wrong with the torte (flaky layered cake with bavarian cream), the green gateau cake (chocolate cake with a middle layer of chocolate ganache and a pistachio covering), and the flourless chocolate cake (one word: DECADENT. veeery rich, served with raspberry sauce). But, truthfully, all the desserts are amazing. The only one I am disappointed with and would not recommend is the creme brulee. Everything else is heaven in your mouth. I generally have good service here with the exception of my recent visit a couple days ago. I won't hold it against them because they've always been so good to me in the past. All in all, this is one of my staple restaurants in Lincoln. p.s. their strawberry lemonade is amazing and so are the white russians.

This place is a cute yummy place. Good for dates and for casual meals. I got the lobster bisque soup and the crepe casserole. I didn't care for the crepe casserole much, but that is mostly because I don't like chicken. I think other people would like it. The soup was awesome. I am fairly picky about what I eat, but I wanted to try a lot of stuff on the menu. I will definitely go back.

Excellent place for breakfast outside of the hotels in Lincoln. A short walk from the Marriott or Embassy Suites, it's recommended for anyone visiting on game day. Watch the tailgate across the street and then join them after wards! Be sure to order a scone prior to eating, it'll make ordering scones at Starbucks difficult once you've had this crumbling piece of heaven. Bottom line: If I'm in Lincoln again, I'll be back.

Its easy to forget about this hidden gem, but the Green Gateau never disappoints! Its definitely one of the better fine dining restaurants in the capitol city. Its small, but I've never felt crowded and the noise level is always quiet. The menu changes often, but the quality never suffers - it is alway excellent. Do yourself a favor and try the lobster bisque - you won't regret it. From the presentation of the food, to the flavor, to the price - its hard to beat. Its a perfect choice for holidays and special occasions! Highly recommended.

I was going to college at UNL when thus place opened in the early 90's. It's always been my favorite breakfast/brunch place in Lincoln. However on a recent visit the service was really lacking, and the menu had changed. It somehow felt more like every other restaurant in the Midwest instead of the gem that it once was.

Living in Lincoln for one year now, this is by far my favorite place to eat. The food is always scrumptious and the service is excellent. Lunch prices are reasonable. Their house salad and chicken salad croissant is bananas amazing! I used to practically drool over their green gateau cake, but learned the recipe has changed due to a change in chefs and now I'm not such a fan....this was a very sad day. Overall, I've had nothing but stellar experiences and that says something being a foodie.

Lincoln doesn't have a whole lot to choose from when it comes to a quaint bistro atmosphere. I moved here from Kansas City in 2008 and quickly discovered the Gat. After searching for places to truly experience food in Lincoln, I found that the Green Gateau was going to be the closest thing possible. I lovED their menu. I lovED their food. I noticed a pretty big change for the worst in their food about a nine months to a year ago. One night about 3 months ago I went to the Green Gateau and I got the Filet Mignon. It looked pitiful. I got the filet about every other time I went and the product that was forced upon me this evening was mediocre at best. The potatoes it came with were dry and the sprig of vegetables were the highlight of the dish. I ordered the meat medium well. What I got was something I could have made in a crock pot over the course of 10 hours at work that day. There was no sing of pink in the middle and it tasted as it it were simmering in a vat of its own juices for a good part of the evening. The atmosphere is great, if you're left alone. The wait staff has mastered the art of the fake smile and an unbecoming pretentious attitude. I recently went to the GG for breakfast. The lady who SEEMED to be in charge was kind of a @*%$! to her staff. I actually almost gave a business card to our waitress to offer her a job with my company! She kept a smile through the unprofessional verbal lashings of the person in charge and even cracked a joke about it after we had done so first. No one needs to be treated that way in front of a full dining room, its unprofessional and it shows true ignorance of anyone who is given the title of a MANAGER who speaks that way to people. I will let it pass. I will eventually go back, with limited enthusiasm.

Whenever driving to Memorial Stadium from the South Side, we pass this restaurant. Always wondering if the food was good (and hearing positive things from it always) I decided to have my birthday lunch there and was not disappointed. Everyone in our party was pleased with the food as well as the calm atmosphere allowing us to escape from a hectic day. If looking for dessert, no questions asked. Ask for the "Green Gateau" specialty cake which is beyond unbelievable. Overall a great experience and definitely a place you should try if wanting to find a good place to eat.

We went to The Green Gateau for a Saturday night dinner with friends. I had been there several times for breakfast and lunch, but never for dinner. Our waitress (I believe her name was Katelyn?) was friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, attentive... just an overall great server! They had some good drink specials. We could either choose a martini or specialty drink for half off, or purchase a bottle of wine and get a free appetizer. We chose the bottle of wine, and our waitress was very helpful in assisting us with making a good selection. We chose the spinach and artichoke fondue in a bread bowl for an appetizer and it was exceptional! My husband and I both chose the beer-braised pot roast for our main course. It was tender, the potatoes oh-so-good, and topped with onion strings that gave it a nice crisp. For dessert, we shared the signature "green gateau." WOW! It was probably one of the best desserts I've ever had. The restaurant offered a nice, quiet ambience. All in all, it was a truly wonderful evening!

This is more related to Windsor Stables - which is catered by the Green Gateau. We had our wedding reception at Windsor and got to have a taste testing. They brought the food to our tables and "revealed" it. It was so fun. I felt like I was being catered to by a famous chef. The food was to die for. My husband, mom and I could not get enough. The reception was the same. The food looked gorgeous and tasted so much better than normal wedding food. My husband and I were looking forward to the reception for the food more than anything!!! We had so many people express their love for the food and service. I was so pleased we chose to have our special day there. About Windsor - very nice, very good to work with, high class. If you have a wedding coming up. Give Windsor a chance!

A quasi-fancy restaurant that nevertheless serves ideal post-drinking breakfast food, and mass quantities of it. To me, hash browns are of crucial importance for recovery from drinking (although i wasn't really even hung over this morning), and their potato pancakes (they have something they actually call hash browns, which i didn't try), are basically the ideal thing. Stringy-cut potatoes fried to heck in butter and grease and formed into a crispy slab. In my case, this went with two giant biscuits slathered in a good sausage gravy. Good stuff. I'd rate it better, but the service was seriously apathetic, and multiple missing items had to be repeatedly requested. Other than that, though, it's hard to be too grouchy with delicious breakfast at hand.

This place was great! Looking for a place to fuel up on breakfast before the game, and the eggs florentine fit the bill... It was fun to watch the people set up their tailgating across the street, and the $4 mimosas helped to create the air of festivity. Attentive service... Nava was awesome! Wish I lived here, so I could partake more often.

I haven't been to Green Gateau for a few years. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place, but it always seemed like a place to meet the gals and when all my favorite gal pals moved away, I went there less and less. Tonight after hitting a jumbo bucket of golf balls with my hubby, all I wanted was a burger and a beer. My husband suggested we try Green Gateau for their $5 burger night (Wednesday). First, I was surprised to hear that he wanted to go there and second - yeehaw! A good opportunity to try an old favorite. After arriving, we were promptly seated and our drink order was taken. I ordered the bleu cheese bacon beer burger and Mike ordered the guacamole burger. We ordered our burgers medium and they arrived quickly and at the perfect temperature. They were served with hand cut straight fries - my favorite. I was in burger heaven. Thanks! I just found my new favorite burger place. Oh, something to add: for those of you who think that Green Gateau is a "get cleaned up to go out" kind of place, while it may be on other days, it wasn't tonight. Most people were in shorts and sandals. We were in golf attire and felt very comfortable. Disclaimer: I am a chef and I am super picky when it comes to food. When food isn't prepared properly, I will send it back. An over or under cooked burger will ruin my day and disgusting french fries straight from the brown freezer bag and into the fryer are super disgusting

The menu was interesting and I chose the crepes cordon bleu and it was delicious. Also there was some secret discount because it was much cheaper than what I added in my head!

I travel all about the United States and Great Britain. (The food in the UK is gawd-awful....so they will not b used as a comparison here). The Green Gateau (the "Green Cake") is a nice little restaurant on a busy street in Lincoln., NE. I've been eating there for many years and the food is always good: tasty, hot, and properly portioned. Went to eat there New Year's Eve and, even though we had reservations, we had to wait 45 minutes for our table. The waiter was not one of the high points of the evening ... he was young, inexperienced and overloaded. He spoke too fast, tried to rush the order, and didn't listen to our responses. I mentioned to my dinner partner that he was a bit "too amped up." Wonder why? Anyway, a fairly good meal was ruined by this kid's "below average" performance. I suggest the Gateau ownership train their wait staff better ... being rushed is not what I want, nor expect, at a restaurant.

I've only had sunday brunch here but I found the food v. good and the service pretty good as well (I went before noon, so maybe i didn't hit a rush). It does the French thing well, the dinner and lunch menus looked good (Oh wait I did go there for lunch and had a Buffalo burger--excellent) Hey fuggedaboudit, it's a cool place in downtown Lincoln and worth finding

The Green Gateau is one of my favorites in Lincoln. My only beef with the place is that the service can be a bit on the slow side at times but at other times it is great. In general, I've been very pleased with the food and I love the quaint atmosphere. Some people I have gone with have been very pleased with their meal and others were happy, but not ecstatic.

My first visit to Lincoln and we stumbled upon this jewel for brunch. We had Eggs Benedict and the eggs were PERFECTLY cooked! Good food, great service. We sat outside and had a lovely meal. Would definitely go again.

Interesting. We had Sunday breakfast at the Green Gateau, so perhaps my experience is a little different than the norm. Let's start with the easy part- the food. Our breakfast was pretty good, but nothing amazing. I had Brioche French Toast, which was rich, but not heavy on flavor. The bread was fluffy though, and nicely toasted. My husband had a dish of crabcakes served on an english mufffin with hollandaise sauce, all of which was ok, but nothing great. The side of hashbrowns was pretty tasty, and not too oily. We both had coffee, which was mediocre, and did not taste like a quality bean or roast. It was headache coffee, a little better than fastfood/gas station coffee, but not much. Our service was fast and friendly, and we were quickly seated. As for the atmosphere... from the exterior the Green Gateau looked like a quaint bakery, which is why we went in. The interior was pretty strange though. We were seated in a room in the back which had quotations painted on the walls, mostly about food, many from the Bible. The decor was attempting to be English countryside, as they had riding helmets and fox-related paraphanilia placed on the shelves. They had some nice built-ins, but also alot of mirrors on the walls. It was all a little too Hobby Lobby for me, but I guess this is Nebraska. The different rooms were named, we ate in "Drury Lane," which was painted above the door. The clientele seemed to be older, and mostly the post-church crowd. For a while we were a little nervous, as we were the only patrons under 50 years old, and the only ones not dressed up for church. Then a family came in wearing suits and dresses, so at least there were some teenagers. As I was visiting Lincoln, I'm not sure what the breakfast scene is like, so I don't want to steer people away from the Green Gateau, but I'd definitely try to see what the other options are before returning.
