Records, soup, muffins, and decor that are all outstanding. Don't miss out because it is always worth the wait and always a fun experience.

This is one of my favorite spots by far. Amazing soups that change every day. I have not had a soup that did not make me smile with every bite. In addition, each soup comes with a choice of a fresh baked break (which often includes delicious cheese scones). I have also tried their home-made macaroni and cheese. This is no noodle in cheesy-sauce, this is great al dente noodles that ooze pure cheese, and are complexly flavored. I highly recommend this vegetarian place. To know: They are closed on Monday/Tuesdays They do not accept credit cards. Definitely worth checking out.

This place has the best Mac n cheese I ever had Love the spirit of the place and it's music which is played on a regular record player Also had some old time sodas that went well with what this place is. A hidden treasure in Lincoln that won't be hidden for long. I Like the cash or check only thing Smart people.

Visited this place in early March - had an excellent Morrocan stew over white rice. Excellent flavor, and decor was funky and fun. They didn't have any rolls when I was there, and I'm a bread and soup gal, myself, so felt a bit disappointed. But I'll return, the soup selection was great.

Great food. Terrible service/professionalism. We jokingly call them "Soup...if we're open." The kitchy hippy thing is cute until I drive across town to buy scones or pick up lunch only to find out a) they aren't open (during their "regular" business hours) b) they no longer have scones (depends on their whim) or c) they no longer make soup (or sandwiches). All of these scenarios happened. Like I said, their food is great. Their "business model" is embarrassing. Enjoy! (if they're open.)

All I can say is, I wanna live here! My friend had been mentioning this place to me for the longest and I finally went. I was totally mind blown by all the awesome decorations and even the potato heads on the ceiling were pretty dopetastic (word of the day! I have never seen a unique place like this before. Food: At first I couldn't find the menu, but my friend pointed out at the colorful flyers near the cash register. They have Moroccan Tomato Soup, Chipotle Potato Soup, Soul of Zorba Mac and Cheese, Chipotle Mac and Cheese, Italian Stuffed and baked Polenta, and Indian red lentil soup to name a few. I got to try the Baby Bella Mac and Cheese, it was really gooood! It had mushrooms, Gouda cheese, bread crumbs, thyme.. you just have to try it. They also have cookies and cheese bread which I heard were must haves. This place is cash and check only, so no plastic. The Bathroom is definitely a must see. So many posters, old magazines, toys, a leopard mirror, so many cool things. if you're ever in Lincoln, make your way to Grateful Bread, it's something to be grateful for!

I've visited here several times. The food is very good - I'd recommend the soup, the baked goods, or the macaroni. The kids are usually very happy with the macaroni as well. The only downside is that the ordering system (at the counter of a very small place) is clunky. I wish there was table service.

This family business goes on for a long time and i decided to try this place . Menu was simple but really big portion. I liked their soft scone and signature soups. Interesting interior with many different collections.

Grateful Bread is a Lincoln gem. I have been coming here for years, indulging in the constantly changing menu of vegetarian and vegan soups, mac and cheese, scones and cookies. Occasionally they even have cinnamon rolls but get there early because they are to die for and when they're gone, that's it. Staples you can almost always get are the Moroccan tomato soup, chipotle mac and cheese, cheddar cheese scones, and their mouth-wateringly amazing Santa Fe chowder. Typical rotating soups and macs feature Asian and southern flavors prominently, often with curried soups, lentil soups, creole seasonings, and many different cheeses with macaroni. Recently they have branched out into non-soup territory, featuring a biscuits and gravy or rice and beans. Always check Facebook first because they post their menu daily, along with surprise closings. We sometimes like to joke about GB being closed on Monday and Tuesday as "hippie weekend." A line out the door is very common at peak hours but it never seems to take that long. Pricing is amazingly reasonable, less than $10 per person.

I tried Grateful Bread for the first time today. I was a little lost today when I first ordered. Not knowing if I just needed to sit down or order from the counter. Obviously from the counter. The decor is funky and really liked it. The Moroccan Tomato Soup was amazing as suggested by a friend. I also tried the Chipotle Mac and Cheese. Both were filling and tasted great. More food than you could eat in three days. I can't wait to try other menu items.

Yum! A gem I discovered many years ago when I moved to Lincoln. One of the original (and rare) vegetarian restaurants in the city. It sits in an unassuming little strip mall on 17th Street near Russ's Market. Free on street parking with more around back. Did I already say yum? Because YUM! Food: Grateful Bread has a rotating menu which is released via Facebook daily. Various vegetarian soups and mac'n cheese are offered and often run out by mid-afternoon depending on traffic. Hoppin' John and some polenta dishes make their way on the menu occasionally as well. While some other reviewers mentioned limited selection as a negative, these dishes are individually made. Like small batches of deliciousness you have to work to enjoy. As a failed cook of many many vegetarian dishes, I have a suspicion that to make so many successful dishes, it takes A LOT OF WORK and complicated recipes. That being said, I appreciate even having the opportunity to have them offered in a local restaurant. Saltines and hot sauce are at each table! Price: this place is CASH or CHECK only. Plan accordingly. The prices range from $1.25 for the various scones, cookies and other baked goods to about $7 for soup and pasta dishes. A wide selection of bottled drinks are available for about $3-4 a bottle. It's been mentioned it was pricey but keep small batch, specialty dishes in mind when thinking about cost. Location: Good for singles to groups with a combination of seating options. Not a giant place but I have usually found a place to sit. Are only a few people sitting at a big table? Sit at the other end. Eat your food. Clean up after yourself. 17th is a one way, North-South street. Get to Grateful Bread from 16th by turning left Sumner. Overall: I totally recommend this place if you want something warm, homemade and delicious. You may even get lucky and get a cinnamon roll or delicious chocolate cake while you are there!

This place is the gem of all gems! The food is remarkable, the prices are good, the decor quirky, it's truly a treat when the day you have time to go is a day when they are opening, even better if they have the mac n cheese you are craving and those brownies!! I've never eaten here and not enjoyed it. This place is run by a family, the hours are here or there (like them on FB to know the menu of the day and if they are open), the space is small, hot in summer and they only take cash or checks but it's worth any hassle it ever brings. If I were to pick the best Grateful Bread menu I'd being with a bowl of mac-n-cheese, probably the blue, add a cheese scone (MUST MUST have a cheese scone) and take a brownie to go. Please note this is a vegan restaurant but I'm a carnivore and never miss the meat. Love. LOVE. Love.

Best soup in Lincoln! Best place for vegetarian/vegan food in Lincoln! I absolutely love the Moroccan Tomato soup, though their other soups are mightly fine too. I appreciate that they list the ingredients for all their menu items. It makes it easy for people who have food allergies or other ailments. My favorite muffins are definitely the Apple Butter muffins. I dream about them if I haven't had one in a long time. Cash & checks only. Prices are very fair, but the wait can be very long, and the space is small. Be patient, because the delicious soup makes it all worth it. They are closed Monday and Tuesday and open 11-6 most other days.

Yes, you are correct. There isn't much bread here, but please be a bit understanding on that front. This place has changed and evolved over the years, and they have decided to stick with the legendary Lincoln name (Grateful Bread) despite it being more of a soup place these days and most locals are very happy they did so (this is what I've heard through the grapevine and like every good legend maybe not all of it is 100% true. Feel free to correct the story if you know more). Also, the name is technically "Grateful Bread/Freakbeat Vegetarian" which describes the restaurant much better. The baked goods they do serve (scones, cookies, brownies, french bread) are AMAZING. Seriously, the cheese scones alone are worth the trip to this cool cafe. The cookies are huge and have creative flavors and the brownies are some of my favorite I've ever had. The soup-can be hit or miss for sure. They try new recipes and sometimes they don't always deliver. That being said, you gotta go for it and keep changing things up. I'm much happier to frequent a place who gets creative because oftentimes that creativity breeds absolute deliciousness. They have old favorites that are always rotating on the menu (Moroccan tomato, Santa Fe Chowder, Egyptian Red Lentil etc) and they always have something fresh and new to try. It might be a bit of a gamble, but I'd rather take the risk than stay boring. The macaroni and cheese is so delicious and sinful. I haven't tried it all because I generally stick to the soup, but the stuff I've had is ridiculously delicious. Vampire Be Gone, Chipotle Mac and Cheese and Baby Bella are all awesome. I'm sure , like the soup, some aren't as good as others. The atmosphere is amazing. I don't want them to change the feel or vibe of this place. I think it's eclectic, fun and comforting in an odd way. They are also always spinning old records which adds a perfect touch as well. The service is underwhelming, but the food is so good I don't care too much about it. You are only at the counter for 2 minutes and then you're off to eat your food. The guy working the front could have a sunnier disposition and acknowledge repeat customers more but when I take a bite of the cheese scone all is forgiven. I would love to see them start to be a bit more green. It's strange in a vegetarian/hippie sort of place that they are using nothing but disposables. I can't even imagine how much waste they put in the landfill every year when you think of the giant lines of people waiting for soup. Overall, I love this place. It's a local Lincoln place that everyone knows and a place that seems to draw people of all types to one space. That's community at its finest.

Really great. Soups, mac and cheese, and the occasional curry are flavorful, filling, and peculiar (in a good way). Every time I come here, there is a different spice, flavor, or dish that I fall in love with. Fun atmosphere, cool sodas to choose from, and a flat price you can agree with. Make sure to check their facebook for their hours and daily menu.

I've waited in line for 45 minutes to be served. It's worth the wait. The pasta lately has not been al dente, there was a time when it was perfect. I usually only go for the Santa Fe chowder, and the wu tang cookie. My kids love that cookie, it has sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, I dream about them.

If I had to wish two things of Grateful Bread was to be open always for me to walk in at my leisure to get a helping of some amazing soup/mac and cheese and oh god the cheese scones. The second thing was for me to wish that I carried cash/my checkbook with me when I'm in the mood for it. Those things in mind, I still adore this place. I'm all about supporting local businesses especially small restaurants that serve quality food. I'm so happy this place has such a strong following and understanding customers. I understand the whole not accepting plastic thing. It may change in the future, it may never change. I'm not going to really sweat it. I always get AT LEAST 2 meals when I go there. If I get a bowl of mac and cheese, it's so filling. I'll almost be in agony from my food baby I'm about to have but then still excited that I'll have food saved for later. My personal favorite is the Chipotle Mac & the cheese scones.

I've lived in Lincoln for 5 years and JUST discovered this restaurant a few months ago. I crave it in my sleep. As an avid meat-eater I was extremely skeptical of the vegetarian menu but I always leave more than full (and my skeptical 6'3 Meat & Potatoes boyfriend does too) Their menu rotates through a few favorites every day but they post the daily flavors on Facebook which I love. I used to always rely on the Mac & Cheese but the Moroccan Tomato soup punches so much flavor it's hard to turn down. AND THEIR BAKERY ITEMS! I get a cheese scone 100% of the time. They're like Red Lobster garlic cheese biscuits but BETTER. And if they have their cinnamon rolls, get those. People drive across state lines for those cinnamon rolls. (I'm not kidding). AND THEIR PRETZEL SCOTCH COOKIES! Okay, I'm done. Eat there. You'll love it. ***Disclaimer: GO FOR LUNCH. The negative review complaining about their food being gone by dinner time made me laugh. If that's not a testament to how good their food is, I don't know what is...***

I honestly don't know how I wasn't aware this place existed until now. A place whose specialities are soup, macaroni and bread? And everything is vegetarian friendly? Yes please! I had the South American vegetable soup, garlic mac and cheese and a cheese scone. Everything was hearty and filling and tasted great! If I could have tried some of everything on the menu, I would have. The decor is also something to take note of. It's very quirky and funky and artsy and gives off a definite vibe. The building itself is not very big and the line can get kind of long during the lunch hour. Overall, it's a very homey eatery with lots of character. I shall definitely be stopping in again soon.

this is easily my favorite place to eat in lincoln! i selfishly wish they weren't closed mondays and tuesdays. the staff is always polite and patient (especially when you ask for samples). lincoln is lucky to have a family run restaurant with good, healthy ingredients. also, i'm not a vegetarian. you won't even miss meat with all the flavor these meals have!

There's a certain type of person who will go to Grateful Bread. As my dad says, "I'm not going to that hippie place!" It is that. Hippie-Dippie, eclectic and YUMMY VEGAN! An explosion of 1970's style and 2000's flavors. Yep, it's kitchy and weird in here. You'll eat among troll dolls, ironic signage (for example the street sign says SORRY, WE'RE OPEN or YES, WE'RE CLOSED, (this humor is lost on certain hungry types.) pictures of Robert Smith from the Cure and Grateful Dead stuff, but let's not focus on that only. The food here is very delicious. I swear, Meat-Eaters, give it a try! Time to order! The soup Nazi (Seinfeld reference) will take your order from behind his cluttered counter. Okay, he's no Nazi, and he is not rude or condescending however he is funny. In all the years I have been to GB he hasn't made conversation or looked happy to see us, despite the fact we're regulars. He is like the guy who should be backpacking across Europe but somehow got lost inside Grateful Bread and is serving the food. Someone once told me he was the original Hipster of Lincoln. So, come and get an autograph! Okay, now onto the issue at hand. The food. The food is good. Delicious in fact. The food is delicious, served in little paper cups and is often gone by the time I arrive. There's something frustrating/annoying/disappointing about standing in line and the little sign being ripped down off the menu board right when I'm about to order. (This means it's GONE.) You better pray that your favorite soup, pasta or macaroni is still available because once it's gone, it's gone. They've added a huge variety of really 'Artisan' sodas behind the counter which are made with real sugar and are vintage cool and delicious. The Mac N Goats Cheese is to DIE for. I remember it to cost around $7 + And the soups are $6.50 ish and don't come with free bread. I believe it's $1 for bread or a scone. (Bread used to come free with the soup, but that was years ago and when Mr. Hipster still was in a good mood I guess.) Oh and the COOKIES! Huge and delicious! Again, not everything will always be there when you want it. But since you can't really make a mistake on the baked goods, just order anything you see. It's kind of weird that they don't accept credit cards. I mean, come on, this is 2015. Even a tiny little town in Washington accepts credit cards. Get with the times guys! I think they accept personal checks if you're one of those folks more in the Senior Citizen category. Overall the food is yummy and vegan. No guilt! The prices are a bit on the higher side. Soup and pasta is served in paper cups whether you're eating in or taking it away. Kind of a bummer because if I want to eat in I always think of soup being in a real bowl. I know, I'm sounding whiney. I think the overall ambiance is discouraging and too Hippie-Dippie as my dad says but the food is good enough I'll get it and take it to go. The thing is, I'd go here 50X more if they accepted credit cards. I literally have cash as often as I have a good hair day, which is almost never. Just sayin' guys, bring cash if you want to eat here.

Stayed in Lincoln while on a road trip, found this place through Yelp. It was delicious! Soups were great, Mac and cheese was great and the scones were the best I've had. Can't believe it doesn't have a higher star rating on here. I appreciate a smaller menu since the quality is usually better. Definitely eat here if you are in town. So good.

I was pleased overall with my take and run lunch experience at Grateful Bread... though I expected more bread and less waiting in line. I think I spent 10 minutes waiting while the sole employee at the counter tried to keep up with a line that stretched out the door. Seemed odd for 1:30pm, but that's also what kept me waiting. Obviously this is something worth waiting for (and it was a miracle I even had cash to begin with - note it's only that or check). Still, the soup was good and the cheese croissant was amazing (should have gotten 2 of those). Note that I couldn't figure out that the 8.5x11" collage posters on the chalkboard were the soups of the day also... Too much other stuff to look at I guess, and kind of panicked and ordered the first one I could read (Mexican lentil). I was in a huge hurry, so instead of delicately dipping and savoring the harmony of scone-in-soup action, I hurriedly stuffed the scone into my maw while driving. The soup, however, taunted me from the passenger seat in its brown paper sack prison. So at the next red light, I reached over and set it free... Too bad for me I forgot two important things. A: what I was driving (Subaru with a much too sporty suspension) and B: soup, right from the pot to a Styrofoam container with lid, is hot. So A + B almost immediately summed up to be spillage and an almost burnt tongue. I quickly put the lid (and masking tape that proved to be a lifesaver) back on top of the scalding brew as a raced towards my destination. About 1.5 hrs later, I finally had a chance to eat the soup and what do you know, it was still warm. Bravo Grateful Bread. I'll be back.

We used to really like this place but it really has gone to crap. You have to go to lunch if you even want a chance to get any of the daily offerings. We tried eating here the other night and out of the 4 soups and 3 macaroni and cheeses they advertised as their menu for the day on Facebook they had 2 soups and 1 macaroni and cheese. We left. Not sure if we will go there again. They close at 6 (really annoying to me if you're a restaurant) so maybe they don't even want the supper crowd.

No bread. Soup is alright, but I'm not a big soup person, and this is a bad place to go if you're not really a soup person. The Mac and Cheese was also alright, but without the chili sauce we added it was subpar. The sign on the door reads "Sorry we're open" and in hindsight...I'm sorry they were open.

  • Ann A.

Ok, we've been coming here for years, but we have had it. The attitude of this place is perplexing. Their lengthy periods of time being closed, their surprise closures that last for days leads one to believe that they hate running this business and the customers, too. These folks must be independently wealthy, otherwise how could they afford to be closed so much? Last summer they were closed for three months of road construction, and then when the road was open, they stayed closed another month. If you don't want to be open, then close for good!!! We're done!!! And you're probably glad!!!!!

Best soup in Lincoln, and their cheese scones are unbelievable! I have never had a bowl of soup that I didn't absolutely love. And it is made from scratch, not in a microwave. It is so good I tried eating two bowls once. Big mistake. Food coma for the rest of the afternoon! They also had cinnamon buns for a short while that are almost as good as the cheese scones. Bring those back, please! The atmosphere is out of the norm, and, as someone who gets tired of being bombarded with marketing, this place is kind of refreshing, as they stand for the things they believe in as much as they believe in their food. This place is a 'must have' for anyone coming to Lincoln, and craving some unreal comfort food.

  • Brandon B.

Wow. A place that only offers soup and mac and cheese. And no bread with the soup. And the soup is flavorless. We were very excited to try Grateful Bread after reading all of the fantastic reviews, but were sorely disappointed by our experience today. We had the Greek bean soup and the Hoppin' John, a cheese scone and a brownie. To be fair, the scone and the brownie were fantastic. But the Greek bean soup was absolutely flavorless, even with salt added, as was the Hoppin' John. Both were no better than something that we could make at home. If the only thing that you sell is soup, then it seems like they should be amazing. The decor is eclectic, but doesn't have a real theme. Is it '60s hippie inspired? Is it kitschy kids toys? Is it random things picked up over the years because they seemed cool? Hard to know. One last thing - the 'to stay' bowls were disposable, as were the water cups, which doesn't mesh well with the '60s feel. Not somewhere we will return.

Quality comfort food. I've only been here twice. The first time was about 4 years ago when I stopped in and had a cinnamon scone. From what I can remember, very good. Last weekend I went back with my boyfriend and had the best Mac & Cheese I've ever had in my life. In. My. Life. Try the chipotle macaroni - it's warm & gooey with yummy crunchy bready bits and a kick of chipotle pepper. The serving was generous enough that it lasted me for 2 meals. We split a delicious cheese scone, and I tried a bite of his curried vegetable soup. All very good on a snowy day. The atmosphere is hippie-kitschy fun - old photos and funky knick-knacks. They use a record player, too. It goes well with comfort food. Boo for cash or check only. (Note: I've only been here for one real meal, and I've heard they keep irregular hours, so that's why I'm only giving it 3 stars for now.)

I LOVE this place. The vibe is super fun, although during the lunch rush service can get a bit slow. You are served in paper plates, but I've never minded, and it has a special charm of it's own that I haven't seen since I lived in Portland, or in some places in Seattle. Their soups are amazing, but I nearly always get one of the mac and cheeses. Their cheese scones are really fabulous and the cookies (especially the pretzel one is so good) are delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough. Favorites: Blue Cheese Mac (so lusciously cheesy and amazing) Chipotle Mac (just enough spice, but not too much) Garlic Mac Moroccan Tomato Soup Canadian Split Pea Soup Follow their FB to see their daily menu as it's made from scratch everyday. NOTE: Only cash or check. Worth it. Go!

A Lincoln 'must-go-to' for any visitor or guest. Grateful Bread has never ever disappointed. The soup has always been perfect and delicious, and the cheese scones are so good that they seem almost to be of mystical origin. The Mac and Cheese is just how you'd want it to be... cheesy, crusty, nicely spiced, filling... awesome! The decor and attitude of the place is something that you don't find too often, and is a breath of fresh air. It is fun. It is delicious, and not too expensive. People have been moaning about the small price increase they recently added - (now charging for a scone instead of it coming with the soup) To this I say - whatever dudes. The price of food unfortunately cannot remain a constant. You can still get full and satisfied here for the same price as a remarkably un-fulfilling 'value meal' at one of those garbage dumps they call fast food restaurants - PLUS you are supporting a family owned business who happens to make the best soup in Lincoln.

  • Josh S.

Sadly, I have to lower my rating for this place. Any more these days the soup I get here is seriously lacking flavor. Such a disappointment because it used to be amazing. That's not the only issue, they raised their prices and you no longer get a free piece of bread with your soup. A tiny little bowl to go with a scone cost me something like $7.50 and I would compare it to a small appetizer. And what happened to the kick ass brownies?! Last four times I went in they were out of them!

so cute and cozy. GREAT soup-really super comfort food. i always look forward to going here. a piece of bread is included with your soup. i usually get the cheese scone which is really good. they are now offering dishes like mac and cheese, which i got last time i was there. it wasn't a traditional mac and cheese. i would never have guessed it was considered mac n cheese just by looking at it. the noodles were on the soft side but it tasted okay.

My favorite thing about this place: no matter how busy they are, when the record ends, the cashier will stop what he's doing, and flip it over. Oh, and everything here is delicious. Even the mac and cheese. Worth standing in line for.

Delicious homemade vegetarian soups in a funky little shop. I loved the lentil and the curry noodle varieties. Tasty bread and a fun selection of beverages make this a perfect, healthy lunch destination. Don't forget, cash only!

Go with a close friend so you can share things. The food is HUGE, so a bowl of soup will definitely fill you up, which is a shame because it means you can't also have the delicious mac & cheese unless you agree to share. The food is inexpensive, but if you are feeling broke 3 or 4 people could probably split two items, if one of them is the very filling mac & cheese. They post the soups of the day on their Facebook page, so you can browse from work before venturing out. Go early for lunch -- there are only a few tables. Don't be afraid to bring carnivores. Even meat eaters will like it here. Who doesn't like gigantic cinnamon rolls and cheese scones? I only wish GB were still baking the full array of breads they had several years ago.

Yum. This cool little soup place is run by a couple and their son. They make THE BEST vegetarian soups from wonderful international recipes. I love the Moroccan Tomato (though it kind of upsets my stomach). Also, the Santa Fe Chowder is fantastic... Really all of their soups are good. Their cheese scones are OUTSTANDING. When you get a bowl of soup, you can choose from a cheese scone, french bread, or a muffin. I submerge bits of my cheese scone in the soup and love it. It's tasty, good for me, and filling. They also have really good cookies and sweet scones, but their brownies are killer, to-die-for... I had a friend living in Belgium, the good chocolate capitol of the world, but she was constantly jones-ing for those brownies.

This is my favorite restaurant in Lincoln. The moroccan tomato soup and the cheese scones are to die for! OMG I've NEVER been disappointed, I go there often and am so excited every single time. I've been eating here for about 3 years, delicious! Different kind of an atmosphere (hippi-ish) but wonderful! Easily deserves 5 stars!!

Probably the best place ever!!! All vegetarian soups, but not only that they are the best soups I have ever had! They have Moroccan Tomato soup everyday, but the rest varies (usually 5) vary daily. The baked goods are not only wonderful, but literally everything they make is great! The only problem is that there is sometimes a long wait because people love it so much an you might as well not try an go if it is past 2 pm because everything will be gone. Great, great place!
