While visiting my family in Helena, MT .. we went to Silver Star Steak for dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the prime rib w/baked potato and green beans and it was good. The only thing that bugged me was that appetizer plates were not cleared when dinner was served and we weren't offered steak knives. Sure, I could have asked for a steak knife, but .. when in a place that SERVES steak, you'd think that bringing steak knives would be a no brainer. For some reason, the place was packed so I'd advise making a reservation.

The service this night was really bad. For us to have drinks, appetizers, and dinner took 2 hours. No one ever apologized or acknowledged their very slow service. Which makes us wonder if this is normal for them. It was not that busy for a Saturday night, maybe 3/4 full, but it took about 20-30 minutes to get our drinks and have our order taken. The busboys were also very slow and casually walking around. They didn't work with purpose and speed that you usually see in a restaurant that is well managed. We also noticed there was no manager visible or the manager blended in as one of the staff. Usually the manager's presence and leadership is visible. It looked like no one was in charge here and it showed in the poor service. And we weren't the only ones that received poor service. We overheard a nearby table telling their server that they never received the wine they ordered and they had already been served their food. The only complaint about the food were the green beans and my wife's flatiron steak. They green beans were served cold and had a black licorice flavor. Also, the sauce served with my wife's steak was pretty over salted. A restaurant with 4-star prices should not make these 2-star mistakes. Everything else we ordered was very good, it just took a very long time to come out of the kitchen. In summary I would give them 3 stars for food, a very generous 2 stars for service, and 4 stars for atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service distracts from everything else that could have made this particular visit a good one. This restaurant needs a leadership change.

I have been here many times over the past few years. Generally for special occasions or a good date night with my hubby. I am very picky abou my steaks and how they are cooked. I have issues with raw/rare meat. In the past this is the only place I have never had to send my steak back (I really don't like being that person, but sometimes you have to). This last visit started off with us witnessing a busboy getting yelled at by a manager (I am assuming) this lasted about 10 minutes. We placed our order. We received our appetizer in a timely manner though I don't recommend getting the drunken shrimp unless you REALLY I mean really like horseradish sauce. During our wait for our food the table next to us ordered, ate, and left before we got our dinners. When they arrived I was disappointed. The steaks had to be sent back and even upon their return were not much better. I ate my potato and veggatables and what few bites of my steak I could stomach. Later that evening I spent the night with my toilet as my dinner did not want to stay down. Very dissabpointed. I don't know if I can ever go back.

I first ate here about 4-5 years ago when in town for business. Was looking for good steak and figured I would try it again. Always a good sign when a restaurant is still around after a long period of time! Pretty quiet when I first came in, was seated pretty quickly and server was timely on coming over and getting my drink order and going over specials. I ended up getting the baseball top sirloin with the vegetable of the day, which was Brussel sprouts with leeks and tomatoes, and garlic mashed potatoes with gravy on the side. Steak was cooked perfectly and you know it is good when no additional sauce to dip the meat in is needed. Loved the veggies. Tasty and not too greasy or heavy. Steakhouses are always a bit more spendy, but this is a beautiful restaurant with great food. Will be back when I am looking for a good cut of beef in Helena.

This steakhouse has very good, if a bit pricey food. Highly recommend a dinner, lunch, or bar trip there for an enjoyable and fairly impressive meeting, date, etc. The five star rating is specifically because of the Moscow/Russian Mule I had there: it was impressive to say the least. If you are in Helena and want a great Mule, hit them up. Incidentally, do not try the same drink at Triple Divide, just down the street. It is, as are all their mixed drinks are (though not their straight vodka) underwhelming.

Lame!!! Nice restaurant & atmosphere, but the place has gone nothing but downhill within the last 5 years. I used to LOVE Silver Star...their crab cakes used to be unbelievable & the steaks incredible...now it all just tastes like it came out of the back of a Sysco truck, which I'm sure it did. One evening, my girlfriend & I were so disappointed that we asked to speak with the manager. When he finally arrived to our table, he was extremely arrogant, treated us like children & acted like we were idiots, although we were frequent patrons up to that point! Have been there once in the last year, to give it another shot & it's just frozen garbage now...very sad, because I considered it one of the best steak restaurants in Montana at one time. Will never go back & will definitely never recommend to anyone.

Overpriced and small portions. Something happened recently where they upped their prices and halved the portions. Service is always terrific here but they must be embarrassed at the way overpriced food. I recently ordered a chicken tenders to share and I believe they served me 1/2 chicken breast for $11- with maybe 2 blue cheese crumbles. So chintzy So we go back begrudgingly and eat as little as possible so it's not a highway robbery.

The sirloin steak was not memorable. The vegetable, asparagus was plain and uninviting, something my 7 year old would make and torture on the grill! There was nothing to the asparagus. The sirloin was over cooked on one side and under cooked on the other. Touted as one of the premier steak houses in Helena I would not eat here. I would stop back to sit at the bar where I ate and have a Merlot. The bartender made the night the only bright spot in a dismal disappointing night.

Wow not much else to say but wow what a place: upscale looking upscale prices food not so much, I ordered the bison Ribeye. I'm not sure what they brought me but they should have brought a chainsaw so I could cut it. Two bite into the meal and I told the waitress to take it away and they still charge me 10 dollars not sure what I got for my 10 dollars but I paid it anyway. On a good note the waitress was very friendly and the service was good so keep the waitress and fire the cook. I will try any restaurant once but once is enough for this place. Here is a hint don't buy $2 frozen ribeye and try to charge $38 for it not going to work! The table next to me had three half eaten steaks they did not complain but you donot leave half a steak on your plate if that's any good. The vodka martini was good average price if you are in San Francisco.

I had high hopes for Silver Star, based on what I'd read on Yelp. But after a frustrating experience with service, I cannot give this establishment more than 2 stars. First of all, where is the management? Where is their oversight? The staff was out of control and ignoring the customers. We entered the restaurant at 4:00 pm. We seated ourselves at the bar, usually a good place to sit when you want quick service. The place was nearly empty so we hailed the bartender and quickly got our drink orders in. Here's where I wonder where the management is: he overpoured, by a lot. Hello? Can you say lost profits? After dropping off our drinks, he ignored us. We'd mentioned that we'd be eating. Nothing. After about 15 minutes, we had to catch his attention for menus. Then he ignored us again. Next thing you know, it's 4:30. A female barkeep comes in for her shift, chatting a bit loudly and wearing dark glasses, with her purse in tow. After a long period of the bar staff joshing around, we tried getting bartender #1's attention. Now there were three servers (2 women and the guy) behind the bar and they're having a good time amongst themselves. My business associate speaks up, "Could we see the menu?" He never returned to take our order but he's in front of us the whole time. It's as though we were invisible. Again, my associate has to ask the group, "Can we please order some food?" The woman bartender takes our order with a smile and submits it. It comes quickly (kudos to the kitchen). My entree was a salad. She drops in front of me and walks off. I had to interrupt their conversion and ask for the pepper mill. By the way, the food was average. Nothing special. Now the staff is talking about swapping shifts. The place has filled up. And people are being ignored. It was weird. To the owners I have a message: Fire your manager. Hire a professional who knows how to train and supervise. Your bottom line will thank you.

Great service and the food was good. Great beer selection the silver star wheat is good and the wife raved about the margaritas!

Not what I expected for the prices and atmosphere they are trying to present. The positives were that our service was great and the bread pudding was amazing! The prime rib was lacking everything! There are place around that are ten times better with beef if that's what your looking for. The lamb chops were an embarrassing bone/knuckle with a little meat.

Tonight was my second time at this place. I think i liked it the first time better because i had a good bottle of wine and i was entertaining a client. in short, I paid attention to the conversation and ignored the food and service. This is an expensive place; it is good for an expense account, where you measure the value of the meal by what you accomplish from a marketing standpoint, rather than a dining standpoint. Entrees start at $25.00 and go up; i do not mind spending this type of money, if i am getting my money's worth. This is not that place. I grabbed elk medallions from the appetizer menu because i ate a late lunch. It was fine, but nothing special. it should have been warmer. The server was nice, but slow to get to me and slow to come back to check on the meal. She was new, which tells me she has not been trained properly. I will only come back if a client makes the kind of suggestion you do not refuse; otherwise, if it is my choice, i will go elsewhere. Too bad, since it is attached to my hotel.

Usually decent, though just turned down a wedding party of 20 because the bride didn't have her ID in her dress.. Apparently they have no common sense. So beware.

The food was excellent, but took forever to get to us. Also, service was extremely slow. If you have a lot of time to spend there, it's worth it

Great selection. Excellent service. If you want a vegetarian option ask and they can accommodate with mains and sides including sandwiches, red quinoa and veggies.

The prime rib was absolutely delicious. Started off with the calamari with an aoli sauce. That was very tasty. Our waitress Jenn was great. Very attentive, polite, helpful, and friendly. The food came out VERY fast. We literally were not finished with our appetizer and out comes the entrees. This place is great try it out if you have not. SILVER star gets a GOLD star from me.

The menu's been redone since I've last been here, and they've tried to go upscale. Prices are ridiculously high for Helena, with a $56 surf and turf, $16 ahi appetizer, etc on the menu. Not sure if they're expecting to get a lot of expense account business from the attached hotel, but I don't know who in Helena is paying these prices. I had the burger, though I don't remember the exact price - somewhere around $10 I think? Good burger (though the bun was a bit small), and the service was attentive, even though we were sitting in the bar area. I honestly haven't had any of the high-priced items on their menu, but these prices would be considered high, even for big cities, much less a town of less than 30,000 people . . .

The atmosphere and service are great. I had a wonderful delmonico, but the Carmelites onions really made it! Seems like since find dining choice in helena.

We waited 15 minutes before our waitress came to our table. Two of us ordered halibut with a fruit salsa sauce; neither of us received the salsa, and my halibut was badly over-cooked. Another person ordered a NY steak but received a fatty rib-eye. Considering the sub-par service, the poor food quality, and the high price, I cannot recommend this restaurant and won't return.

I ate lunch at the Silver Star during a recent visit to Helena. The service and atmosphere were fine, but the food was unremarkable and overpriced.

Our waitress was 4 stars. The food was 3, nothing to special although the veggies were delicious. Big wine menu. I wish they had more beer on tap. I will go again just not to often it's a little hard on the wallet.

I have been to the Silver Star many, many times & I am just not that impressed. Prices, for Helena, are RIDICULOUS! Food is inconsistent at best - I actually had a Chinese Chicken salad there once (now off the menu) and the cabbage was black and rotten. It was a long time before I went back after that. I will say that I like the drinks. They have a decent wine selection & pour a generous glass. But typically when I go there, it is for the Martinis. They make some wonderful martinis - my favorites are the Cat Nip and the Cucumber. So, if you go, sit in the bar, have a martini, and either get an appetizer or just go somewhere else to eat! I don't think that their entrees are worth the crazy prices.

After giving this place a fair shot and visiting it several times, I must say that I'm not impressed. On one visit, we had some tolerable calamari, among other things, but the chipotle sauce was overpowering and cloying. As for atmosphere, apparently having ridiculously high prices and baked brie on the menu makes a restaurant "upscale". Maybe in the 80's it did. On a more recent visit, I had a $37.00 steak that was overdone, and lacking it's sauce. I sent it back for the sauce, which was a mistake, as the sauce was bitter and acrid. The mashed potatoes with it were barely warm, and the gravy on them was little better than from a mix. The salad was a run-of-the-mill, bland-o iceberg standard. This experience was in keeping with previous visits. A final anecdote: I ordered an Old Fashioned, a simple traditional drink, and it arrived without it's cherry, a standard, traditional Old Fashioned ingredient. When the waitress (who was quite pleasant, by the way) asked how the drink was, I pointed out this omission. She returned to the table a few minutes later to inform me that "we don't put cherries in Old Fashioneds here." Funny. They did last time I was there. (She did comp me the drink, though). The restroom was also filthy and smelled like a cholera-stricken refugee camp. All in all, the Silver Star is not worth my time or money. Read some of the filtered reviews at the bottom of the page.

I am surprised at the poor reviews of this establishment. My husband and I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The service was great, the atmosphere is nice without been snobbish. The steaks were cooked perfectly (I had the filet mignon, medium rare, he had the bison ribeye medium) I was unsure about giving this place because of the bad reviews, but after trying it I am convinced that there are some people who feel the need to find something to complain about no matter the situation. Give the Silver Star Steak Co. a chance. You'll be glad you did.

I have always had good experiences at Silver Star. The food, drinks and service are good. However, on my most recent visit it seems that the prices have gone up yet again. Everything may be good, but I'd have to say it's just not worth the price. In my opinion, if you're spending on fine dining, Lucca's or Taste of The City are much better options. However, if you're looking to meet friends for a drink, I'd have to say that Silver Star can't be beat.

Food quality dropped and menu selections worse than previous visits. Service likewise worse. For the money you should get better. On a Saturday evening several menu items were not available. Over a 5 year period, this establishment has fallen off from really enjoyable to we doubt a return visit.

I generally like this place, and have been there several times. The bar is one of the nicer and larger ones in Helena, and the food, while pretty Americano, is good. My most recent visit, however, made me wonder if maybe they were training several new employees that night. The two hostesses at the front podium seemed ill prepared to decide if there was a table available for us; then we had no fewer than three individuals stop by our table offering drinks to get started, promised bread which didn't come, and then our drinks and actual waiter assigned to our table took too long to arrive. It felt like a "let's meet everyone on staff" night. They were all pleasant, but truly there was a communication gap between them as to who should be doing what. Clearly, whoever is the manager, or the one on duty that night, was not running a tight, organized ship. The food was very tasty and well prepared, so all in all, a thumbs up.

Went here twice, the first time had bar food and it was pretty good. Came back later for a sit down dinner and ordered some chicken and pasta dish. The chicken was skinless and rubbery, covered with a sauce that clearly came from a mix. The pasta was chewy and way overcooked. I took a bite of each and stopped, it was completely inedible. My girlfriend ordered scallops that were covered with some gross sauce and they had sand in every bite. She's braver than I and told them about the sand, and sent it back because it was also cold. It came back, clearly microwaved, still with the sand. The waitress saw my uneaten food when she gave us the check and gave me a knowing look, avoiding the normal "How was your meal" question. Because we had to send one of our items back, we got 10 dollars knocked off of our 65 dollar bill. WHOO! 55 dollars for two inedible dishes, what a bargain.

Steak! I go here off and on and have never had a bad experience. Usually I'm in the bar or out on the patio, and the service is generally very good. It's more upscale than most Helena restaurants, but still casual. The french onion soup can be a little salty, but the brie is excellent and the specials are tasty and tend to run out quickly. Prime rib sandwich is always a solid pick. Advice for ordering steak in Montana: medium rare is the standard and all bets are off beyond medium. If you don't like pink in your steak you'll be happier ordering something else.

I am upping my rating and improving my review. I had a truly Fantastic steak there the other evening. The only complaint I had was the size, I would have given 5 stars if it came in smaller portions, Steaks of 24 and 32 0z are just too large for most people . Don't miss the bread pudding for dessert!.

I ordered the Bison ribeye and the French Onion soup and it came out very nicely done and tasty. The service was good and they food was good. My companion got a steak with the Huckleberry sauce and was very happy with it.

OK, I have no idea what happen to the first time, or how the second time went not so great. I was hoping to try their bison rib-eye, but they were out, it was a Monday night, dissappointing as I'm so rarely in town and I really wanted to try it. So I ordered the kobe rib eye instead, with a french onion soup. Now I love my salt, I love all kinds of salt and sometimes will lick salt... but the french onion soup was even too salty for me. Wow, I never thought I ever come to a place where something would ever be to salty for me. Amazingly, I actually didn't send it back, i really should have though. I tried to water it down and dip bread in it, and still had to eat it in small doses because it was that salty. The Kobe rib eye was an even bigger dissappointment. I ordered medium rare, which it seemed close enough, it was a bit more on the rare side but thats ok. It was super fatty, now I kno ribeye has fat, but this sucker had me guessing if there was any meat on there at all. It was stringy and dry, simply a terribly choosen piece of meat. If it weren't so quiet in the restaurant I would've told the waiter that the quality of meat was crappy. Service was extremely slow, waiter forgot to get me water and my wine. Overall the experience was just sad.

This place needs reservations from what I hear if you want a seat soon. It's a bit overpriced in my opinion. The server was friendly, but couldn't remember half of what we ordered. We didn't get our appetizer at all. If she hadn't been so friendly I might have complained to the manager. The table next to us sure did - but they probably didn't have as nice of a server. I wasn't feeling like having a steak so I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken. It was really good. They serve a pretty nice grand mariner margarita, too. The bread rolls were really hit and tasty, as well. This place only gets 3 stars because the price and the service just don't match. If that much is going to be spent on dinner - I expect a close to perfect wait staff.

We gave it one more try. We used to come here automatically because it was so good. Never was inexpensive but it used to be so enjoyable and the food was wonderfully crafted. We've had steaks, salads, muscles, salmon, and great deserts in the past. But it's been awhile since we've had a great meal here. But I can make appetizers at home as good as we had tonight. Actually I can make it twice as appetizing because I'll put chicken and cheese on the chips that you can find on the plate. But if you want a plate of delicate chips for $17 be sure and order the Macho Nacho. That is such a funny title for just about the wimpiest plate of chips we've ever had! I'm giving one star for the very nice person who waited our table. Tina was the only silver at Silver Star. Adios.

If you are from the big city, I'd say that this would rank as a slightly above average steakhouse. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Service was good and our waitress, Natalie, was great. Food took a long time to come out and the rolls were not brought out until about 15 minutes after we were seated. Maybe as an afterthought since our meals hadn't come out yet. The prime rib is their specialty. It was ok, not as nicely marbled as other places I've been to before. If you are in Helena and crave a steak, it's ok. But being in the West where cattle often outnumber people, I was hoping to have one of the best steaks I've ever had...so the search continues on our road trip to the West!

French Bordeaux wine special for 8 per glass- love. Wedge salad- eh. Was overly chilled and seemed to be peeled down to the very hard core. I like the sweet, softer outer leaves. The dressing was good however. Flat iron with blue cheese- very tasty... And very reasonably priced at 24 bucks! And cooked as I asked, something hard to come by sometimes. Veggie side was nothing special. Ambiance- very noisy dining room, but nice lighting slightly skewed towards a western motif but not overdone. Skipped dessert- was totally full! Good place- I'd come again.

I had the prime rib here and my girlfriend had the ribeye. Both were cooked perfectly and had excellent flavor. We started with the bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer and they were amazing as was the risotto that came with them. The cat nip martini was delicious as well. The atmosphere was very comfortable and the service was prompt. I highly recommend this this restaurant and will be back here again the next time I'm in Helena.

I would give zero stars but that's not an option- when a restaurant touts itself as the best place in town, it better live up to it, and this place doesn't- I got so sick, I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital- when I called them up to let them know, they acted like I was somehow to blame for not notifying them something was wrong with the meal! It tasted okay, so how am I supposed to know?! What really took the cake was there wasn't even a hint of an apology. I'd rather go to McDonalds than this place- never again!!

This place has so much potential. It rest on the laurels of "the best in Helena". Cost is high and product is not there. Service is lacking. Until they raise their standards I will go else where.

  • Chas S.

The restaurant had a great buzz, but the food was not the best. I came in at 8pm and ordered the fried calamari appetizer, which I was immediately told they were out. I ended up with a very salty baked French onion soup. The New York strip was cooked perfectly rare and had a nice broiled taste. However, just like the soup, the steak was overseasoned. I'm giving this place a 3-star rating only because they had Moose Drool Brown Ale and they got my steak cooked rare.

This place was one of the highlights from a recent trip through Montana! I still remember, six months later, the perfect meal I had here. Sadly, I don't see the exact item on the menu any longer but it was similar to the Southwestern Flank Steak they've got on there now. If I ever visit Helena again, I'll be sure to carve out some time to visit this place.

  • Cherine A.

It's one of the only nice restaurants in Helena. Keeping that in perspective, it's great. It's a good place to go if you feel like something more upscale than the usual in this town. The bar was nice, the steak was pretty good (but skip the bernaise sauce, it's thin and runny), the champagne wasn't overpriced, and the waiters were attentive... but having been to other restaurants outside of this small town, it just doesn't compare. It's not fair of me to compare it to restaurants outside of Helena though, so I won't... hence the 4 stars.

    (4)
  • Jae L.

Got the new york strip medium rare with loaded baked potatoe. It came out more towards medium than medium rare...but since reading the thread from a san diego yelper where its never a good idea to send anything back due to the possiblity of a disgruntled waitstaff messing with the food with their junk I figured it was in my best interest to shut up and keep eating.

Best restaurant in Helena. I eat there at least once a month and the food is always good, service is excellent, atmosphere is nice. They have great steaks, good seafood, and good appetizers. The lunch menus has some nice sandwiches. The prices are very high, but that is because there are very few good places to eat in Helena. If you want good food and good service, Silver Star is your best bet in town.

  • Jenny B.

Awesome Margaritas. Service is slow, if you can even get anyone to come to your table to even give you a menu. We went at a time that wasn't busy (between lunch and dinner on a weekday). The food came out fast after we waited 30 mins to get our menus and another 20 mins for the waitress to come back to take our order. After we ate we gave our card and the bill to the waitress, only to watch her set it on the counter behind the bar and not come back to it for about 15 mins.

Nice spot. The service was friendly and the food was great. The salads and sides were fresh and tasty. The steaks did not seem to be of prime quality but they were perfectly prepared.

I was a Silver Star groupie when I first moved here in 06. I still love it and I suggest it to anyone that is new in town. The lounge atmosphere is fantastic!

I don't know why I dislike Silver Star so much, maybe it's the crowd that's there, all the hype that surrounds it (that Helena finally has a semi nice steak restaurant), or the quality of food. I've been here a couple of times, don't really need to go back! The first time I ordered rock shrimp pasta and there were literally rocks in it. I don't know if they didn't clean the shrimp or what they deal was but it was disgusting. The second time I went for lunch. That was a little better, sat in the bar, had a wrap, can't really go wrong there, but I just can't get into it. Whenever my friends suggest it, I shoot it down and suggest something else.

Loved the section of town this restaurant was in, but we were told right after sitting down at 7:30 that one of their ovens was broken so we could not get the Brie appetizer that we wanted. As if that weren't enough, I was told after ordering my entree that they had run out of the mashed potatoes, and I had to choose a different side for my filet mignon. I loved my steak, however, and the walnut and blue cheese salad was delicious.

Went for lunch today. Guy with an attitude (manager type) at the front desk. Was told (with the attitude that we should know this) that lunch is served in the lounge and just go seat ourselves. They are offering a 6-7-8 menu which seemed very cool. 6 meals to choose from, $7 each, and served in 8 minutes. We thought that sounded great and ordered from that menu. 6 and 7 are fine, but don't count on 8. We waited about 20 minutes before our food arrived. It was cold. (Ya know - we weren't really in a hurry, but THEY were the ones that said it would be served in 8 minutes...if they can't do that then they shouldn't say that.) The chopped steak lunch consists of chopped steak burger, garlic potatoes and a very tasty mushroom gravy. It was pretty good, but cold. Obviously had sat around for a while. Waiter was nice, but forgot that I ordered wine. IMHO, if they are going to serve lunch they should put some effort into it. My impression is that they are putting minimal attention into service and food for lunch and you can take it or leave it. I think I'll leave it.
