Excellent food, and fun outdoor seating! Warning don't whole meal otherwise you will be pleasantly uncomfortable!

Don't stop here unless you have an abundance of time. Tables sitting open the entire time we waited to be sat. I was never offered another beverage. Extremely unorganized waitstaff. Food was good. Loved the outdoor seating. Too many other options to waste our time here again.

I have eaten here a few times and tried to give it more chances but it just seems average and not very inspired. Yes, the soup is good, but everything else you can get from any five and dime. The patio is nice, I will also give them that- a great option on a hot day. But in the end, there are just too many other good options for lunch and dinner at the same price point in Bozeman to spend your time here.

The food was "ok" but the wait was ridiculous. Once we had a table we waited 30-40 minutes for the food.

Used to be our favorite place to eat a burger outside during the summer. But every year they raised the price $1, and this year is no exception... but they did something different this year too...made the burgers quite a bit smaller. So we've only gone one time so far this summer, and probably won't anymore. Which is sad. If you want to give them a try, the Duesenberger had been my favorite.

Salad was nasty but if all you like mixed green lettuce than that's a good salad for you! Soups were the best part, neither one of our burgers were cooked to temp- why ask how we want it cooked if your just going to a frozen burger and char the hell of it! The best part of this place is there a kids area to play and out service was friendly otherwise food pretty nasty all around.

I recently embarked on a late lunch mission to get soup in downtown Bozeman with my kiddos after running errands and decided to give the Soup Shack a try after not being there for quite some time. We walked in to no greeting or ignored recognition by the hostess(es) and waited a few minutes before being acknowledged. We were then told it'd be about a 10-15 minute wait before being seated to a table, but I was pleasantly surprised that there is now a kids' play area that we could hang out at while we waited. It ended up being about 10 minutes; understandable for small space to crowd ratio. Our waitress was outstanding (geez, I wish I remembered her name...). We originally went in for soup, but after getting soup, my son decided he wanted chicken strips and fries instead. We ordered and it was out within 5 minutes - no problem. Great food, excellent service. I think there were at least two floaters walking around removing empty plates and tidying up each table, both asking if there was anything else we needed or if everything was okay with our orders. What a step up! I'm impressed and will now put the Garage back on my list of eateries. Yes, places can be hit or miss, but everyone deserves a second chance. Things that could make it better: - A friendly greeting or acknowledgement upon entering would be nice. I don't mind waiting a few minutes to be seated, but just let me know that you saw me come in, rather than me fighting to grab your attention to be put on a waiting list... I understand you're slammed, but first impressions are HUGE.

Bison burger was cooked perfectly and the Caesar dressing was good. If it were not for the hour wait ( the table I ended up wit was open the entire time), I would have given 4 stars.

  • Doug H.

Neat little niche restaurant in a town that seemed to have a TON of burger/sandwich places. Solid pulled pork sandwich. I tried the tomato soup as well, and it was quite delicious. Service was friendly, nothing too special. There was a bit of a wait, which seems par for the course for them. Overall if say it's a good place to get a sandwich/burger when it's nice out.

After being away for ten years, I was looking forward to sitting outside, enjoying some food and drink, and catching up with friends at The Garage. You know, just I did several days a week for many years when I used to live here. However, despite having five tables open they wouldn't seat us -or anyone else- because, as I heard the hostess tell a waiting patron "the kitchen is really backed up so we're taking our time and not seating anyone right now." Apparently they can't staff correctly for a Friday afternoon during the summer and on a day when Crazy Days is in full swing (and this a lot of foot traffic). So we left. But I ain't mad atcha, Garage. I wish I could lie and say I'm never coming back. I was I could quit you. But alas, I am your dutiful whore. I'll be back...just so you can turn me away again xoxo

I've lived in Bozeman for many years and have always prided myself on trying new and unique restaurants that come and go over time. Until now, I had always regretted not trying The Garage. Not anymore. On the whole, our experience was extremely disappointing. Before going to lunch, we read some reviews and heard the Bison Burger was amazing, so that's what I ordered. What I received was mediocre at best. The meat had little flavor, and while it was cooked perfectly (I ordered it Medium), it had little else to offer. Basically, the bun was just a bun, the meat was just meat. There was nothing too special or flavorful about the food we received. The patio seating was really enjoyable, and our server was attentive, but as far as the food goes, we won't be going back, not with so many better and varied choices in town.

One of my absolute favorite places to eat in downtown Bozeman! I love that the food (meat & veg) are local and in season. They work really hard to provide a comfortable environment that is great entertainment for your eyes with all the art (scultures/lights/other) on the walls, adding to the vibe of the place. But since it was a mechanic's garage sound carries and makes conversations difficult at times. The burgers are my husband's favorite. He always goes for the '57 Chevy and I never hear any complaints. It's cooked perfectly and we never have to take it home. :) I however, really like the soup bar. The options and add-ons are varied and really up the ante with the flavors. I personally really enjoy the Thai Coconut Curry soup paired with the BBQ chicken sandwich. If you want a place that is as unique for your eyes as it is for your belly, you should definitely try the Garage!

I've been a fan of The Garage for a while. Wonderful theme, nice staff, and excellent food. All the soups in the soup shack are great, but the tomato soup is particularly wonderful. It goes very well with their grilled cheese. I'm also a big fan of any of the burgers. One small compliant. The kitchen doesn't seem very open to requests. On several occasions I have made small requests (burger well done, no bacon on a sandwich, etc.) only to have those requests politely ignored or taken too far. A bothersome pattern for an otherwise excellent restaurant.

  • Brian S.

I asked the waitress what she recommended and she said the pulled pork sandwich was very good. I happened to be leaning that way because it was designated a "recommended item" on the menu with a special little logo, so I went ahead and ordered it. The food came out quickly, which was nice. I'm not sure if I had high expectations from the prior yelp reviews or what, but I found the pulled pork to be underwhelming. I'm not an expert, but I think I make better pulled pork on my smoker at home. This tasted like it was made in a crockpot and doused in sauce to cover the lack of flavor. It wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't order it again. The service and ambiance were good, so I wouldn't be opposed to going back and giving them another shot.

I thought the place was small but wow! Was I surprised. The side salad was big enough for two. The service was great the staff seemed so happy. Love the old car garage atmosphere.

In my opinion, this is the best burger in town! Friendly staff, cool decor, an all-around great place.

  • Erin A.

Woo, this place was good! I got the Deusenburger. I remember the name, but not what was on it, except that I got bison. You get to pick your meat for whatever burger you order. I do remember liking it a lot. It was pretty big - I had to save the second half for later. And I got a rootbeer float...which was CHOCK FULL of ice cream. Whew. Next time I'm visiting I will definitely come back to this place. We came in with a group of six at about 1 pm on a Friday and we had to wait about 20 minutes. Our server was friendly and right on. Hmmm. Now I'm hungry.

Love this place. Great burgers and fries with healthier options as well. Friendly staff and great location to sit outside on a nice day.

Delicious! We enjoyed the soup, salad & sandwich combo with amazingly good tomato basil soup, and BLT sandwich. Super yummy! Hubs had the chicken Monte Carlo sandwich and it to was awesome! Sitting outside on a beautiful day was great too. Don't forget to check out the mirrored bathroom, it's pretty cool too.

We always stop here when visiting Bozeman. The ideal outdoor eating place with an especially wonderful burger menu, among other things. My 1/2 lb beef burger was exceptional. Not only was the meat delicious but the ciabatta bread it was served on was so fresh and tasty, that I ate it by itself first, then the patty. I know, it's weird! (See my attached photo).

  • Jeffrey B.

I don't remember the last time I ate a burger with nothing but the scrumptious sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese that came on it, I did-the buffalo burger here was awesome!!!! Everything was really great including our friendly local server, JJ. This is a place I would frequent if I lived here. Clam chowder was also really tasty. Affordable and top notch- a rare combo indeed!

  • Dennis M.

Very friendly staff. Great Grilled Cheese Sandwich, my wife and I both love it. Have never been disappointed with their burgers either. Eat in or take out. A great mix of hot soups at their "soup bar" too. Close to us and we keep coming back. Car theme in an old converted auto garage. Super outdoor seating area during the warmer months. Neat. :-)

  • Hannah D.

Had the garage on vday. Amazing. Everything perfect. Came as ordered. Ordered it again tonight. 57 Chevy. They forgot the bbq the cheese and the bacon. How do you manage to forget EVERYTHING it comes with. Just curious.

We ate a casual dinner at the Garage. The atmosphere was fun and unique. The menus are made from old licenses plates! Our server, Alisha, was so sweet and efficient! Our food was excellent and just as described. The soup bar was a pleasant surprise. We will eat here again when we are in town!

  • Angela P.

Had their Greek Sandwich with Gyro meat, it was so delicious! The food was delicious but the true star was the bathroom. The restroom is a trip! Never wanted to see that many different views in my life!!

  • Amy H.

Ate here last time I was in town and had a bison burger which was fantastic! They have made from scratch soups that you can taste before you make up your mind which one you want. Only looses a star from me because I wish the had more organic options. Ask for the cheese dip to go with your fries!!! It's sooo good! Gorgonzola, cream cheese, sour cream, jalapeño & garlic! Yum!

  • Raven C.

Love the cool retro ambience and the awesome kids area. Much needed after a long day in the car and more to go. We were very disappointed that they did not have a kids burger, since they are a burger joint. After ordering 3 burgers, tea and a root beer, and tip we spent more than $40. However the bison burger was delicious and even though I usually like medium I wish I had ordered medium rare as the waiter Lucas (who was awesome) suggested. We thought it was a good stop and yet are considering eating at the coop next time for cost.

    (4)
  • Winter G.

My sis in law loved the clam chowder, and the kiddos ate the cheeseburgers up lickety split. The chicken soup was just meh. It needed lots of pepper and the noodles they use are the "wagon wheel" noodles they also use in the kids meal pasta.

Really cool concept and REALLY good food!!! Love the Soup Shack- I love soup and there's are homemade and delicious!

  • Jen R.

You know what's funny? When we are in SF and we order a burger or a steak, we have to order rare in order to get medium rare. Sometimes even then it doesn't work and we end up with just plain medium. We forgot where we were when we ordered a rare burger and we got tartare on a bun as a result. It was tasty, but damn... Our bad. At least someone knows what rare means in this crazy, mixed-up world. Decent ribs, too.

  • Angela K.

All the food here was pretty mediocre American fare. Nice but very casual outdoor patio space, great for warm days. My dad likes the Bison burger but isn't blown away by it. Huckleberry shake just tasted like blueberries and milk. I was looking forward to it.. Bummer.

I have eaten here twice, while traveling through Bozeman. The first time I ordered a turkey burger. It was the worst turkey burger I have ever tasted. My husband and I sat outside . The entire restaurant was full, but we were the lucky ones to sit under the dripping canopy-and it was not raining. Our server was extremely slow (about an hour to get our food), yet the people around us were served much quicker. The second time, I had a curry soup and it was tasty. My husband refused to order and just sat and watched my daughter and I eat. I really wanted to like this place too, because of the cool atmosphere.

  • Jeff L.

Great atmosphere, great service and great food. Our server was Patricia. She was attentive but not over bearing and we never had to ask for anything. Beyond that it seemed every member of the staff was working together as a team to make the experience great. We had a party of four and the orders were cooked as requested with 4 burgers ordered. The variety of burgers is wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good Bison burger.

  • Lisa H.

I love that they serve organic grass fed beef! My burger was so delicious! They also have an awesome soup bar with their special custom soups. Everyone in our party enjoyed the quick friendly service as well as their food. It was kind of a wait but very much worth it. Also if you are a dairy free person there isn't much on the menu to fulfill that. My son can't eat any dairy so it was hard to order for him. Other then that I would have said 5 stars. Received this message from the owner and very happy to learn that they will take my feedback seriously: Thanks for the feeback Lisa. We will look at the dairy free options more closely. Much Appreciated, Pete

Cooked to order burgers - YES! Excellent beef and bison. Wonderful selection of soups with great toppings. Pork chili verde was superb! I had a bowl of chicken barley soup with a good scoop of roasted garlic - a hot foretaste of heaven. Burgers were perfectly cooked as ordered, but I'm coming back for more soup.

A local must stop-in. The ultimate grilled cheese was really good. Their soups are, of course, delicious. Our waitress recommended mixing the tomato basil and the pollo Verde soup. I suggest cheddar Jack, bacon and chives as toppings for your soup.

The Garage is one of those places that is really difficult to quantify into a star rating. It's a strange building type for a restaurant and to be honest, wasn't converted terribly well. It's sort of cramped and the layout a little weird, but the food was just fine. I had a bison burger (I can never remember if buffalo is the meat and bison the animal, but I think the menu said bison burger). It was nicely juicy and cooked medium-rare as I requested. The bun was good and toppings fine. The meat really shined here and that was the highlight, as it should be. Fries were hot, fresh, and tasty. Decor is as if a train made out of TGIFridays restaurants jumped the tracks and plowed into an out-of-business Sinclair station -- motor oil signs on the wall, license plate menus, that sort of thing. There's a little too much rust for my taste. There's a huge patio, but I visited in February and it was snow covered. I imagine in good weather it's likely full of college kids -- this seems like it would be their kind of place. The service was just fine, but I was alone in there on a Tuesday night shortly before closing and the place was empty. I'd drop in again for a burger and probably try the soup too. However, it's no place to really hang out and not much of a watering hole either.

Happy Accident to find this place. Nice outdoor seating with a old gas station theme. Very nice people all the way around! They even let us keep our well behaved dog near our table. Food was excellent, had variations of the buffalo burgers. We ordered medium, if we had to do it again we would have done med rare as Buffalo is very lean. Cole slaw side is excellent. Also, had a local brew, very good and served very cold which is important in my book. Did I mention the service and people there are nice as can be?!

Best Burger in Montana Wonderful joint with great staff and outstanding Burgers at a value price. After a long drive we were looking for a nice place to have dinner where we could bring the beagle. The Garage was very accommodating with a great table outside and brought a bowl of water for our pet. We were there for happy our and got a couple of beers at half price. I ordered the half pound 57 Chevy burger (bacon, cheese and bbq sauce) and my wife had the Dusenburger (1/3 lb version with provolone, garlic aioli and artichoke hearts). We both had then cooked to a perfect medium rare. The French fries were fresh and crisp. Our server, Megan was friendly and helpful and very attentive. So for $31.22 I had two 22 oz drafts, my wife a pint, a 1/2 lb burger with fries and a 1/3 lb burger with fries. What a value for an absolutely outstanding burger in a great and friendly setting. We will be back when we pass through next year!

Now with 3 times here I have a pretty good sense of the place. The soup bar is the best reason to come here. It is awesome not to be missed when it is open until late May. The funky garage theme is fun and easy to take with the jeans down jacket crowd of Bozeman. The menu sandwhiched between a pair of dented old licenes plates you get as you sit down. My had seen a lot of wear and needed to be replaced also I found the type face hard to read. But the array of food listed inside gives you a good choice of causal fare. Pulled pork sandwich was one of my choices. The succulent pork was piled generously on a good quality Kaiser. You can get a hint of mesquite wood in the flavor if you hold back a bit on the b-b-q sauce. The coleslaw I picked over fries was all savory with not a drop dairy, mayo. It is wet with a tangy sweet vinegar that adds a bite to the flavor the cabbage the gets my engine running. The top of the menu is mesquite bar-b-q baby back ribs which I will have to try next time. The absolute must try is the soup bar. Open during the cold and chilly months in Bozeman and running till the end of May. This cafeteria style self select allows you to taste any and all of the 6 or more soups they offer. The pork chili verde soup is killer but so is Grandma's chicken noodle and most all of them. Once you finally decide which soup now you have to decide which of a dozen included condiments you want this time. Um chives, wagon wheel pasta, cheddar or Parmesan. It is tough. This has got to be the best answer for a Bozeman winter. Not so good is the service. While everyone is quite nice, smiling and friendly I had the impression that for 2 of the 3 servers I saw, I knew the menu better than they did. They seem interested in helping but they don't seem to know how.

Cute patio, good for kids but the burgers even having bbq sauce were really dry & flavorless. Was looking forward to something really great maybe we should have tried the soups everyone raved about.

The Garage is a great place to grab a burger whether you are a local or here on vacation. They are also known for their soups, but I rarely order soup in a restaurant. I agree with the post that mentions how the burgers are actually cooked the way you order it. Good local beef or bison, and the toppings are fresh. They would benefit from expanding the kids menu. My kid loves it there for the decor and the people watching from the patio in nice weather, but usually ends up eating plain noodles or chicken nuggets. Overall a great place we visit every couple of months.

  • Krista N.

You don't put a burger on ciabatta bread. It's against burger law. Just don't. It's weird and it doesn't taste good.

I don't know what to say about this place. The service is bad. Either you get a girl who is rolling her eyes at you or a guy who is chatting up a table of ladies. Most of the food is good. I would say their specialty is soup but, my husband really really likes their ribs and the children like the chicken noodle soup. Some of the food is overpriced. Majorly. They sell Kraft mac n cheese and want $5 for it. No way. Patio is nice when the weather is good.

I am so disappointed. Back in Montana for a visit. The Garage has always been a great go to place, it has changed. Came in for dinner and the service was soooooo slow. People that were seated after us were getting their meals before us. Our server seemed very rattled and not service oriented. The table behind us waited for about 30 minutes to get their credit card back. When they asked the server she didn't know where it was, so they ended up going inside to get their receipt and card. Mr. B ordered Ribs and he said they were okay. My bff ordered a burger and asked for the mushrooms and wanted to know if they could saute them without garlic, she is allergic. The server said sure, and they had garlic. I ordered the grilled cheese with tomatoes no bacon, side salad and the tomato basil soup. The sandwich had bacon and the soup was spilled all over the salad, it was a mess. Unfortunately we all agreed that was the last time we would eat at The Garage. I understand it has changed owners, and it is unfortunate that we ended up with such a poor server, it ruined our experience and we won't be back.

Stopped in for lunch last Saturday. They were busy, had to wait for about 30 minutes to get a table outside (it was a beautiful warm day for October!) but well worth the wait after we tasted the food! I ordered the soup, salad and half a bbq chicken sandwich. I have never seen a soup bar like that before, but the person attending it was helpful offering me samples and suggestions on what soup to try. I went with the chowder and it was great. Love that you can add toppings to your soup, makes it a little less boring. The salad was fresh and my sandwich was awesome. We left full, but not stuffed and really enjoyed our lunch. Our server was friendly and attentive. Would recommend and will be back for sure!

Tasty soup, solid sandwiches and salads and friendly staff. Also the most ridiculous mirrored bathroom in all of Montana. What more could a road-weary traveler ask for, really?

Great burger love the ciabatta bun, a hue improvement on the standard burger. Love the soup shack, best place for soups year round. Super impressed with their clam chowder, filled with clams!

Great burgers. Even come in buffalo. Waitresses were all 20 something tattooed girls that were friendly. Everything was good and fast. The decor was all classic cars so you have three of my favorite things, women, muscle cars and good burgers.

I can really see why this place is so popular - it's cool, it has great seating, cool ambiance, all the beautiful people hang out there, they have a good beer selection and ostensibly a great menu. The building is really cool, the patio seating is darn near perfect - the bathroom is the coolest thing i have ever seen. But the most essential part of the dining experience is somewhat lackluster - the food is just kinda eh. We've been there twice now in our visit here and while I recommend it as a fun place to go, it's not a place to go if you're looking for good food. The service is REALLY bad. The kids that work there don't really seem to have a clue how to stack guests or efficiently rotate tables. They are slow to respond to basic requests and don't keep an eye on things like water, utensils, etc. We've been there when it was extremely slow and extremely busy, and there was no real difference in the level of service. The patio seating is fantastic. They have this funky silver fabric that serves as shade but still lets the sunlight filter slightly through - it's great. They are on a big corner so you get a nice breeze and can people watch. The tables are big and roomy, the chairs very comfy. They use six-pack boxes to hold condiments and keep Trivial Pursuit game cards on the tables. Nice set-up and very welcoming. The food - well, it's bland and lacking in flavor. The tomato basil soup was tasty, but in general the sandwiches and burgers just don't have much flavor. And not only was my burger overcooked according to the temp I asked for, but there was a hair on it. Ew. Also, today I was going to get a salad until I realized it was more expensive than the burgers. $13 for a salad? Really? Good beer selection, my husband really enjoyed trying various local stuff. I was driving so I just tasted his stuff. But if we were local I could see us spending many an evening hanging out on the patio eating chips and drinking beer. Overall, a great place to go if you are just looking to hang out and have a good time and the quality of the food is not your first priority. We liked it, but the reality check is required.

This is one of those restaurants that is just right for a burger and fries, or some buffalo wings, or some of the best soup in town. Don't go there expecting something out of the ordinary or nouveau cuisine. Fries are some of the best in town (order them a little crispy!), burgers are always cooked to order, and the cook's idea of medium is the same as my idea of medium -- just a little bit pink inside. Beer is cold, house wine is very drinkable, and Arnold Palmer's flow freely. Love this place! Servers are always fun and helpful.

On of our go-to places in both the Summer and Winter! Love the selection in the Soup Shack in the Winter and love the patio in the Summer. Good beer selection and hard to go wrong with the Soup, Salad and Sandwich Combo!

If you feel like you may be hungry in a few hours this is the place or you. I have tried on three separate occasions over the span of four years to eat here. Never again will I put myself through the agony of waiting hours for food to come. When it does come it is borderline inedible. Their burgers must sit in a press for hours on end to get to a perfectly round shape and become tougher than chewing on leather. I will never again eat here unless they drastically change their ways (better food and a much larger kitchen for more than 2 cooks!).

  • L D.

The good: great variety of burgers and soup, nice outdoor seating space, kid friendly. Not so good: the pear that came with the soup was mealy and flavorless, the glass my husband's iced tea came in had huge chunks of dried food stuck to the inside that we unfortunately didn't see until the glass was half full- totally disgusting and not sanitary! When we pointed it out to our waitress, we were given a free cookie. Nothing was comped, not even the iced tea! This is just unacceptable. The food and atmosphere warrant more stars but the nasty, dirty glass and free cookie apology only get 1.

Nice food, a tad slow on service. Awesome atmosphere, the tomato basil soup rocks, as does the grilled cheese with bacom and tomatoes. My dad's bison burger looked good. Good experience.

The bison burger was good, but this place had the best turkey burger (El Camino Gobbler) I've ever had! It's oddly smooth and full of flavor. Stop there for a meal if you've just flown into Bozeman airport.

Awesome!! I went here on a Sunday afternoon after visiting the Museum of the Rockies. It was practically empty, which I really enjoy haha. The menus are held together with license plates which I thought was really cool. It has a good atmosphere with some neat decor. Mel was my waitress and she was great! Very friendly and funny, and she kept an eye on my Pepsi level. I had the soup and sandwich combo which for only $10 it was a great deal. The Ham and Cheese soup is to die for, especially when you add cheddar cheese and bacon bits on top. The Grilled cheese with bacon and tomato was also very good. I will definitely be coming back!

My wife is from Bozeman and had talked about this place quite a bit. It was the last stop on our week long food (coma) tour. I loved that the menus were license plates and I loved sitting outside. The beer came it wine bottles that had been shaved down, which I thought was cool. The burger I had was great. It was full of flavor and very juicy. My wife had the grilled cheese and it was pretty awesome as well. I would like to go again and try some soup but I was very pleased with my visit!

Garage is fun, relaxed and serves delicious food. I went for lunch and got the soup/salad/sandwich combo, which was huge but super yummy. The staff are lovely and the whole vibe is just great. Great spot for a casual meal.

I've eaten here a couple times and it has generally good food, nothing to die over but I like that they have outdoor seating and the restaurant has a cool vibe. Don't get their burgers, thought. I've had their bison burger and wasn't too impressed. It was extremely small (you could barely see the meat in the bun) and I got avocado on the burger which was three measely slices for a dollar. For that price you better smother it down, seriously! Most "extra" condiments (which is seriously everything- cheese even) costs at least 50 cents or more. My boyfriend, who loves burgers, didn't really like his. Same issue- meat too small, having to pay too much for extra condiments that should come with it in the first place. One thing to rave about though- their Wilcoxsons ice cream and shakes. I got the huckleberry ice cream, my boyfriend got the shake, and we were both in heaven. Next time I'll skip the meal and just get dessert!

Food was good, as usual. However, the service was slooooow. Server was far from attentive, only coming to the table twice, once when we arrived and then with our food (25 minutes after ordering 2 burgers and a grilled cheese.) When we were finished we waited for a check, but finally just got up and went to the register to pay someone else. What's happened to the concept of service?

My husband and I literally got off a plane in Bozeman at 10am on a Saturday, picked up a rental car, headed to downtown Bozeman, parked, started walking down the main street (at least I think it was the main street) and asked a woman on a bike where we should grab some lunch. Being from Nashville, TN it was 11am our time and we were starving! She suggested we try The Garage and we were intrigued. It was an absolutely PERFECT day in October and the sun was just beaming! She said, "You just have to go there. The food is great and you can sit outside and enjoy this fabulous weather!" So, we did. We got there a little before the restaurant opened, but the hostess sat us anyway and brought us our menus. Menus made out of recycled license plates! So cool. Anyway...the menu was EXTENSIVE. I had a very hard time deciding what to get. My husband, the carnivore, went straight for the bison burger. I ended up getting a salad with pulled pork (sometimes I eat meat). I will say, my salad was just "okay". I should have ordered something else. My husband's burger was good so he says. He also had an orange creme soda and savored every drop. The service was friendly and prompt. The location is great and it was fun to watch everything from our vantage point. We will definitely be coming back to Bozeman one day...and we just may need to relive this experience at The Garage!

Solid food, nice patio, pleasant (if a little slow) service at the one time I ate here while in the area for a fishing vacation. Had the wild salmon sandwich and was pleased with it. Seems like it might be a fun scene on weekend evenings, good looking crowd, etc. Would go back next time I'm in Bozeman.

Good food, Good service. We got ribs, wings, and a chicken sandwich - all were good. Only complaints were that they brought out our appetizer and then before we could finish they brought our meals, but I guess that is better than cold food. Also we asked for the sandwich without bacon and it had bacon - not a huge deal. Good beer selection and a good price.

Visited Bozeman, MT and headed into downtown for lunch and saw the Garage on Main Street. "Mesquite Grill" got my attention and we were a customer. Mostly outside seating and good it was a nice day. Great menu. I had the grilled steak sandwich on toasted ciabatta. Very good, in fact, better than expected. Cooked to order and very tender. Pam had the pulled pork, also on toasted ciabatta. Interesting twist on preparation with tortilla chips and melted cheese on the flavorful and spicy pulled pork. She also ordered the coleslaw instead of fries. The slaw is apple cider based, fresh and very tasty! Great sandwich. Why only three stars? Pricey and our service was very slow. Would go back to try other things on the menu.

Went here for a mid-day lunch during the wedding venue weekend, and I wasn't in love with it but wasn't disappointed. Initially, the patio seating was full and the only options were in the direct sunlight. I asked to sit inside, but they said they weren't seating inside. We sat down in the sun, ordered some drinks, and then a table opened up. They were accommodating with the move which was nice. Our waiter was definitely laid-back and didn't show up for quite a while and when he did, he said, "So, are you guys pretty much ready to roll?" I have been a server and I definitely wouldn't have said that to a table, but I took into account the location and his personality and we just ended up laughing at it (once he walked away, of course). The food selection was all right, and I wasn't too happy with the food I ordered (minimal non-meat options) until I got it. I ordered the veggie sandwich (the only one on the menu, though the waiter said there were two), and it wasn't amazing, but it was one of the better ones I've had. The bleu cheese dressing made the sandwich worth it. I didn't try the soup because the only vegetarian soup was a roasted tomato and I'm not a huge fan of roasted tomatoes... though based on the reviews I'm sure now that it probably would have been great. My fiance got a buffalo chicken sandwich with the cole slaw, and enjoyed the sandwich but I'm not so sure about the slaw. It's not mayonnaise based (which is awesome for me) but I think it's red wine vinegar based (it's a little on the red side), and I'm not sure how he felt about that. I don't think he ate much of it, but if you like red wine vinegar slaw, you might like it! The fries were great, root beer was a little flat, but overall, the meal was enjoyable.

This was a last resort after waiting in an incredibly long line at the trendy restaurant up the street only to find they were out of pizza (Friday night at 8, what?!). They let our puppy sit with us outside on the patio and didn't kick us out even when they had closed and we were still eating. Great service, and the food was surprisingly really good. Will be back when next in town!

I absolutely love any type of food that has cheese and this place has one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches (get it with tomatoes & bacon!!) I have ever had! It was served on a garlic type bread and was just too good to be true! The atmosphere is also really fun. I was visiting Montana for the first time from San Francisco and to have so much space to eat outside on a warm night was really great and helped make the whole experience even better. I loved this sandwich so much that I still find myself searching for one now that I am home. I have yet to find anything that even compares though! Great place!!

One burger was ordered medium and it came out like a hockey puck. That person had to watch everyone else eat. The bread was stale and the service was marginal along 3 other dishes. A great place for visitors since they do not know any better. BTW, no Chile Verde on the menu. Apparently at the Garage Chile Verde has a season. Want a great burger, try the Rocking R. Awesome....... Thursday night burger, fries and a pint of beer. 10 Bucks.....

Great ambiance and location, Good beer selection, Poor vegetarian selection. Long wait. So: Relaxing Omnivore Beer Lovers give it five stars Relaxing Herbivore Beer Lover (me) gives it three stars Anxious Herbivore Teetotaler should eat at Pita Place across the street.

One of my favorite places to eat when I'm on the road. I actually get excited when I need to go to Bozeman because of The Garage! LOVE their buffalo burgers (take their advice and don't get it cooked past medium or you'll have buffalo pellets!) In the summer there's a great outdoor seating area, soups are stellar as well! If you find yourself near Bozeman, you gotta try it out!

  • C H.

By far the best burgers in town IMO. I am not much of a soup guy but of the couple I have tried they are very good. The outdoor seating is great in the summer time and during the winter you get to enjoy all of the interesting creations and welding experiments inside. I like the john-deer. Now go turbo-charge that Studebaker!

I wanted to give them more stars because I loved the old garage ambiance with the license plate menus but couldn't rightly do so. Maybe we should have tried the soups. Though I must say that the Sangria was great. The beef burgers were ok. I tried the bison and it had a funny flavor and wasn't cooked medium like I requested. Almost turned me away from bison (but later in the trip my faith in bison was restored). The fries were over done and tasted like cardboard. R wanted me to use the word terrible to describe them. Eating with Allergies: They were one of the worst places that we've seen for helping people with food allergies. We wanted to know whether their buns contained dairy. The kitchen staff threw a fit and said they didn't have time for that kind of stuff. The waiter didn't know and would have had to call the distributor. R ate a bunless burger and some of those overdone fries.

Perfect end to a great vacation. Great ambiance with the auto shop wall decor and license plate menus. Three of us for dinner and we had the Deusenberger with provolone and artichokes. Great flavor and the soft bun I prefer. My friend had the Studebaker with bacon and spicy bleu cheese which she enjoyed. Second friend had the 52 International with mushrooms and Swiss which she said was great. The cole slaw was not a hit but everything else was good including the fries. Service was friendly and attentive. If I was not here on vacation I would be back next week.

Montana has great burgers, plenty of places to choose from but the Garage has a little more ambiance that will make it seem fun to eat a burger and fries! Expect a bit of a wait but you can browse in some of the shops nearby or even inside the Garage past the kitchen. Love their menu with the old car license plates, clever, clever, clever!

Great deal on soup, salad and a sandwich. Soups are amazing and a cool atmosphere. Nice selection of burgers too.

Super delicious soups, with great variety (I find tomato basil usually boring but here it was fantastic, and the pork chili verde was that perfect balance of spice, salt and a touch of tang). Sandwich was great, and salad was even very good. Best part is that the prices are amazing, even for Montana. Very good beer selection as well. And a fun ambience and attentive but not annoying service to boot.

Everyone here says it best...try the soup, try the soup, try the soup! I also tried my first bison burger and is was leanfully delish! Everyone with me got the same and enjoyed it with a cup of clam chowder...for a late July evening, it was much cooler outside in Bozeman than in any other state this time of year so the soup (oh and beltian light ale--not belgian, this stuff is from Belt MT) hit the spot. Laid back service with just enough attention...add a uniquely fantastic menu and this place truly rocks.

I actually used to work here. It's laid back and very cool - plus the owners are great people. I recommend their burgers, sangria, all of their soups (5 stars just for that), and their super ultra omega premium ice cream (made by the owners). They even have a cute little smore-roaster thingee (technical term) in the winter. Back to the soups - they have a soup shack in the middle of the restaurant. It's hot as hell to work in, tiny to boot, but MAN those soups are incredible. I love all of them - tomato is delish, the clam chowder is fantastic, and there's a butternut squash soup that I'd practically kill for. Too bad this place isn't closer to where I live. Word of caution - the soup selection rotates. They have a few staples on the menu at all times, but you need to try the place out a few times to get an idea of their variety. Yummy.

Awesome lunch. The gal at the front desk of the super 8 recommended it as a good place to go with our dog, and we were really impressed. Cool patio, really fun interior design. We sat on the deck with the pup. Best veggie burger I've had in a really long time, and the side salad is generous and tasty. their mesquite grill just packs on the flavor! Great service, really happy we went!

Laid back kind of place. Good soup and kick ass grilled cheese sandwiches. There was also a very cute dog hanging around the outside area where we sat. Not that that really has anything to do with the restaurant but he really was adorable. I probably shouldn't have but I gave him some of my sandwich. True story.

I found this little gem through my Places application. Wow it is GOOOD!! I ordered the combo (soup, salad, sandwich). Colorado chili, grilled cheese with tomato and bacon and garden salad. Everything was delicious. They make seven soups fresh daily. You can sample all of them. Today they had tomato basil (excellent..chunky and creamy), pork chili verde (wow, a must, spicy), Colorodo chili (spicy traditional chili..I topped mine with sour cream and cheese...just a few if their "soup enhancers"), sausage and cheese, clam chowder, Grandmas chicken soup. Come for the soup, local draft beers and awesome Montana ambiance.

On a cold, windy day in Bozeman, you'll be hard pressed to find better soup. The prices are reasonable ($6 for a big bowl of HOMEMADE-From SCRATCH! soup!) and the atmosphere is funky with old car parts making up the seating. Good burgers and a rockin' grilled cheese! My favorite soup is the tomato basil.... it makes me hungry just thinking about it. Oh, and better yet you get to choose from 15+ additions to put on the soup! And it comes with cornbread or ciabatta (sp?) , and an apple or pear.

I visited Bozeman to see a friend living there and during that time we went to Garage for the burgers. I was told that they were something special and I most certainly was not disappointed. The burgers are large, juicy, well made and VERY well seasoned. The menu is rich enough to give you what you want without being so crowded that you just get overwhelmed. Really it is exactly what it should be, a great burger joint, if only it were a little closer to NYC... the travel time there is a killer. I did not try the soups there because the summer season really wasn't the time for that. Hopefully another reviewer will handle that aspect of it.

This place has a great unique decor, and their burgers are really good! The fries appear to be made from fresh potatoes on-site. Unfortunately, the whole experience is nearly ruined by the poor quality generic ketchup they keep on the tables. A switch to Heinz Organic would be a welcome change.

I look forward to my travels to Bozeman because of The Garage. Their soup bar is not to be missed. Several scratch-made soups are on tap daily: you gotta have the Pork Chili Verde and the Roasted Tomato Basil soups. On warm days getting a table is a challenge, but with the promise of great food, I don't mind the wait. Almost a 5-star rating EXCEPT their Soup, Sandwich, and Salad combo always features the same sandwich options. I wouldn't mind paying an upcharge for doing half of their featured sandwiches (just like they do extra for a bowl of soup instead of a cup), but they are firm in sticking with their four main sandwich choices.

Summer patio is awesome. Unfortunately the grill is small so the turnover is slow. Sitting on the patio, beer in hand for a while is a great joy though. Burgers are excellent, wait staff is friendly and helpful, beer menu predominantly features local (excellent) brew.

Stopped here for a bite to eat during a drive from Yellowstone National Park to Glacier National Park. I couldn't think of a better place to take a break from driving with an ice cold montana beer and healthy salmon salad. Very cool outdoor and indoor space with bathrooms that have lots of toiletry products such as mouthwash available for the patrons. Didn't try the soup, but the food my group ordered was all top-notch. Staff very friendly. I would love to go back to Bozeman and The Garage.

Young good looking staff servin up tasty soup (only did soup shack, no burgers) Atmosphere a bit like a college bar, but don't knock it till u tried the tomato and cream! Take it to go, or befriend a hippie chick.

DAMN! that is good soup! WOW... I ordered a bowl of their tomatoe cream soup and it almost shocked me out of my seat! My fiance had the "Grandma's Chicken Noodle Soup" and that was amazing too. We both couldn't resist getting a second cup (start with the bowl if you go). I think their soups change all the time so you might not see these soups if you go there but I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I don't know how I wound up in Bozeman Montana on my cross country trip (luck), but some day I am going back for the soup!

Visiting MSU, found this place in the AAA guide of all things. Disappointed that the soup bar isn't open in the summer, but wow, if the clam chowder is any indication their other soups must be amazing. Had a late lunch, but still had to wait for a table. Well worth it. Great fries, and the burgers were good to. Hope the kids decide to go to school here, would love to come back regularly.

  • They Call Me L.

Welllllll - had to write an update. Came here around 12:30 on a Saturday. The patio was hopping. We had about a 10-15 minute wait before they seated us: not bad. Another 5-10 minutes, we put our order in. And then, the wait. And more of it. And more. Around 25 minutes into it, I'm getting antsy (we'd just been on a little bit of a taxing hike that took almost 3 hours) b/c I need to fill my belly. 15 minutes later, I'm giving the ultimatum that if the foodstuffs don't show in 2 minutes, we're out of there. What do ya know - the waitress walks up with our dishes. It's not like they were complicated or anything: Cobb salad and a cheesebooger with fries. They were mighty delicious and hit the spot, but they seriously didn't have to take that long, full patio and only two cooks notwithstanding. The table of four that was next to us and had ordered a couple minutes after we did ended up ditching the joint though, and I can't blame 'em a bit.

  • Well-Traveled I.

The Garage, as we call it in town, is average. It's not bad but it's not great; however, I think that sums up a lot of places in Bozeman. The sandwiches at the garage are very good; however, their soup (even though it's what they are known for) was mediocre at best. The New England Clam chowder was watery and not thick; it didn't even taste remotely like what I expected. The wait staff is very friendly. However, if you eat outside, service can be painfully slow to the point where you want to go inside and make your own meal.

Really great spot... The chicken soup with added noodles and daily special veal burger were both fantastic, and my brother loved his burger with spicy blue cheese and bacon. The only problem was the service was slow.
