We stopped here on our way to the airport to fly back home. The place is very small inside where you place your orders, but I believe the sitting area is next door. We ordered our food to go so we could eat on our way to the airport. I ordered the Mushroom Steak sandwich which was FANTASTIC!!! The sandwich was big enough for me (I enjoy large sandwiches) and had steak and mushrooms piled on! It was fresh, it was hot, and it was DELICIOUS! This was my first visit to Bozeman and if I ever go back, I would make it a point to visit the Pickle Barrel!!!

I LOVE sandwiches. So much, that I yelped 'sandwich' while driving through Bozeman and stopped here because of the great reviews. I ordered the cheese sandwich with veggies. It had a ton of lettuce, 2 tiny onion slices, 2 sad looking tomato slices, and the saddest dash of oil and vinegar. One of the tomatoes was a gross top slice. I was so disappointed to spend so much money on a huge sandwich that was basically just lettuce and cheese!! I would've been better off at Subway or jimmy johns. My husband ordered the Italian. He says it was too much bread for him to taste the flavors of the meat and toppings.

So sad to have to downgrade the Pickle Barrel. Primality due to the man we suspect is the owner. We were waiting for our sandwiches when he came in and began loudly berating the staff in our presence. Very offputting. That being said the sandwiches were swimming in mayonnaise on one side only so it was more like eating a mayo sammie than a deli one. The veggie sammie was heavy on raw mushrooms and sliced black olives and sprouts. Apparenly there are no avocados or cucumbers or red peppers that one associates with a veggie sammie.

Yuck! Terrible service, food just as bad. Severs could care less if we were there. Tasteless veggie sand, 5 others in the group didn't finish and said they wouldn't be back.

I love this place. Same location, same decor, same small town sammich shop vibe. I lovvveeee the pickles and we always take our kids here for scoops because they have Wilcoxins icecream. As a native Bozemanite, I hope this place never changes.

This is a great lunch spot! The service is good, the food is fresh, and the portions are huge. I ordered a full Bobcat Sandwich and it will probably be enough for 4 meals. The bread is great here, all the vegetables and meat are super fresh, and they definitely don't skimp.

I think this is so popular because college kids are hungry & they pile about 1 pound of meat per 1/2 sandwich!!!! I couldn't even finish 1/2 of a half & it needed more ingredients & seasoning to flavor the meaty meat! Its a very cute shop.

For whatever reason the date on this review is incorrect. It should be dated 11/14/2013. I discovered just today (via Campus Special) that Pickle Barrel delivers!! I ordered a Pepper Steak sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie, and a Snapple. I really wish I knew the name of the driver who delivered my food, because he was fantastic. He realized en route that he had forgotten the cookie I ordered, so he went above and beyond stopping at City Brew to pick one up for me. Even with the extra stop, he still managed to get my order here quickly. He was also very polite and friendly. The sandwich was humongous! Not having eaten a Pickle Barrel sandwich in a few years, I had forgotten that a "whole" sandwich is 12"...and don't assume this will be the same as ordering a foot-long at Subway. This is at least twice the amount sandwich you would be getting at Subway. I got about 80% of the way through the first half and was stuffed. Not that I'm complaining, though. I can save my other half for dinner tonight or lunch tomorrow. :) The sandwich was also delicious. The beef was tender and not gristle-y at all, and the cheese and toppings were perfectly melted into the sandwich so that you were able to taste all of them in every bite. I will absolutely be ordering from Pickle Barrel again!

Great big sandwiches, although $13 is steep for a full size sandwich. The halves are still large enough for a satisfying meal. The cheesesteaks are the best meal you can get there, and their various daily soups are also very good. My only issue is that the ingredients they use are pretty cheap and you can taste that when getting a cold sandwich that doesn't have any overpowering cheeses or sauces on it.

Yum!! Perfect sandwich place for a cold day! Definitely a small establishment but it still has delicious food! I got a 1/4 Italian sandwich with soup. The portions were generous and the soup was chicken and wild rice, my meal also came with a drink. Great place for a lunch but it would be hard to eat there with a large group so you'd probably want to call ahead with orders.

Is there even another sandwich shop in Bozeman? There shouldn't be. No one who has tried the delectable sandwich that is Pickle Barrel would ever go anywhere else. Thick filling sandwiches and fast friendly service. 5 star sandwiches are all they allow on their menu. Hot or cold THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT!!!

Many years ago I attended MSU and was fortunate to room next to an upperclassman who ordered a cheese-steak sandwich from the Pickle Barrel. Being a college novice, I followed the wonderful smell to the room next door. I asked my learned neighbor where he got that wonderful sandwich and he replied .... You don't know about the Pickle Barrel? Sophomore-ishly, I replied, "No !! What's that?" I still remember his response "Don't worry ... Here is the phone number ... They deliver." After making my first phone order to the Pickle Barrel, I spent a quarter of my college food budget at that restaurant from that point on. To make mom and dad a little bit happier, I ordered more ham and cheese sandwiches than I ordered cheese-steaks. However, as the bard aptly said, "to thine own self be true" ... My fave is still the cheese-steak. Since graduation, I have traveled the US and world, sampling many varieties of Hoagie, Po-boy, Muffuletta etc... The best by far is this cheese-steak Sammie. Also to my dismay and disappointment, the cheese-steak offerings in LA are pathetic. Grunion's in Manhattan Beach makes something similar. Their steak sandwich does not have marinara sauce. Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh make a similar steak Sammie and is very good. It is more along the Philly cheese-steak style. Also a good offering can be found in Kansas City at the Chartroose Caboose. And for those Pickle Barrel-o-phyles who are nowhere in the vicinity of your favorite restaurant. Here is a method to make the world famous offering at home .... Sorry PB, the secret is now out! You can blame my old roommate Duane who badgered me for years to duplicate this recipe. Ingredients: 17" Italian bread roll cut in half but not separated 1/2 pound of shaved beef 1/3 cup chopped sweet onion 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning (oregano, basil, tarragon, sage, and thyme) 1/2 teaspoon of Balsamic Vinegar 2 to 3 ounces of Monterey Jack or Havarti Cheese (grated is preferred) 3 to 4 tablespoons of Marinara Sauce (homemade version supplied below) Method A. On a hot grill, partially caramelize the sweet onions using a spatula to frequently turn (about 2 minutes.) B. Add in the marinara, Italian seasoning, balsamic vinegar, and shaved beef to the grilled onions. Chop the shaved beef during this grilling cycle. Grill the filling for about 2 minutes. (Do not over grill the beef.) C. Add the cheese to the top of the filling and allow cheese to melt slightly (15 seconds). Quickly mix the cheese into the filling (another 15 seconds). D. Transfer the cheese-steak filing to the Italian bread roll Dr. Geer's UCLA Inspired Homemade Marinara 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes Yellow onion (finely chopped) 1/2 green bell pepper (de-veined, seeded, and finely chopped) Tablespoon of olive oil 3 cloves of garlic (finely chopped) 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning 1/2 cup fresh cut and de-veined cilantro 1/4 cup of Red wine Salt and pepper to Taste Optional if you have 1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves (finely chopped) Sautee onions, and green bell pepper in a pan with olive oil. Add in the garlic to the onion mixture and sauté for about a minute longer. Add sautéed vegetables to a sauce pan with crushed tomatoes. Heat tomato mixture and add the cilantro, Italian seasoning, red wine, salt and pepper. Simmer mixture for about 1/2 hour crushing the tomatoes to your desired consistency. If you have fresh basil then add it for the last 5 minutes of simmering. Transfer the marinara and seal in mason jars. Refrigerate until needed (marinara will keep for 3 weeks stored cold in the fridge) Note: you can use this marinara sauce as a pizza sauce or you can use with tortilla chips as a game time snack. Pretty much still the best cheesesteak I've ever eaten. Great food. That is my PRO. CONS? Place is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. 14 dollars for a full sandwich is stupid. Might wanna head down to the bank and get a loan if you plan on eating here more than once every other week. Also, the employees are always really rude. REALLY rude. They act like it's a pain to deliver. Oh well. Like I said. Great food

They stack a sandwich thick! High quality local place. It's been there forever for a reason.

I stopped in again, one year later. The sandwiches are still huge, and still awesome. There is no other sandwich quite like them.

  • Hilary B.

We went here for lunch at the recommendation of local law enforcement. It's a small establishment, so probably best to get your food to go as we did. I got the Turkey sandwich. It was good, but nothing extraordinary. The portions are HUGE and the bread seemed very fresh. I would definitely recommend a half sandwich, it's more than enough. My lunch companions got the Cheese Steak upon the recommendation of our law enforcement friends. I think that would have been the way to go. It was messy, but they both enjoyed it. The turkey just reminded me of lunch meat that you can get anywhere whereas the cheese steak seemed like a better quality. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll try the Pickle Barrel again and get a different sandwich.

Still the best sandwich shop in Bozeman! I've been frequenting this place since 1983 when I was a freshman at MSU. I still think the sandwiches taste great and their Pepper Steak and Turkey are my go-to sandwiches, but they have definitely skimped on the sizes the past few years. The bread loaves are not as big anymore and the real kicker - their pickles are now only spears. Up until a couple years ago, you would always get a whole pickle with each half sandwich. Lately, they have been supplying only a quarter of a pickle with each sandwich. Considering that it's their namesake, don't skimp on the pickles!

  • D N.

If you want a sandwich and pass up The Pickle Barrel you have done yourself a major disservice. Always good, from the simple ham and cheese to the Dragon slayer. Come hungry cause the portions are huge!

  • Heather M.

Soggy like a frog's arse. Their sandwiches, a roast beef and a turkey respectively, were not that great. For what they charge, they should be pretty decent. There is also no place to sit down inside or outside which is confusing because the building looks like it will be bigger on the inside. However, it is about the size of a pickle barrel. They also only do cash transactions. There are much better sandwich places in Bozeman, especially for so much cash.

  • Ethan T.

Great sandwiches, that's all you need to know. They make an excellent Italian, and I've also had the Bobcat and can attest to it's greatness. Just make sure you realize the size of their sandwiches. I was once waiting for my sandwich when a fairly petite woman ordered a whole sandwich. I assumed she would be sharing with the boyfriend at home, but then she ordered another sandwich... I chuckled when the cashier asked her if she realized how big the whole sized sandwich was. Check out their website and look at the size comparison chart, it really isn't exaggerated

Great sandwich shop. If you aren't hungry, you will be when you walk in and smell the all the delicious aromas from the grill and sandwiches. And great pickles too. Loved the Italian, we will be back.

Hands down the best sandwich shop in Bozeman, MT. I used to eat here weekly during my college days and now I make it a point to eat here at least a couple of times every time I fly back to Bozeman to visit my family. Their sandwiches are huge and the whole can easily feed two though I can eat a whole after a long run. Their cheese steak sandwich is hands down the best cheesesteak sandwich in the country. I have tried every cheesesteak sandwich shop in Philadelphia and it doesn't compare to a cheesesteak at the Pickle Barrel. Sorry Philly you are not the king of cheesesteak but you can continue to believe that if you want.

This place simply does not know how to make a good sandwich. The... + veggies are old, and there's not much selection. + rolls are bland, and cannot be toasted because they apparently don't have a toaster in the place. + sandwich construction method is basically jam all the meat into a ball, sprinkle on 2 pieces of XX vegetable, and then pack the mother with shredded lettuce. squishy, soggy, uninspired...no respect for the potential that is "the sandwich". A real shame. Oh, and make sure you ask for "no mayo" if that's what you want -- if you don't mention it, well, it's going on your sandwich. I can remember at least two times calling out the sandwich maker in the back (i.e. "Hey! Is that my sandwich you're making?") for either making my sammie wrong, or hosing it with mayo against my will. I've eaten here a few times because I work close by on campus -- but really? I only go here because the lunch options in this area are so slim. Somebody should open up a real sandwich shop next door to this place -- they'd make a killing!

The sandwiches are huge!!! A half if 6" at least a whole is a foot long. Only one bread type and limited choices. Overall a good hole in the wall joint.

  • Michael M.

A Bozeman mainstay! Always a good deal and priced right. Huge portions! Love the Bobcat Special. Just wish they had their 2nd location as parking around MSU is scarce and there is not an indoor option in the Winter.

  • Lauren M.

Giant sandwiches on fresh bread. I have to get a "half" sandwich because they are so dang big! Delicious, but heavy and soggy. Think lots of meat and a drowning of strong cheese sauces. Which is fine if you are craving that- and I do, every once in a while. Prices are a little expensive, too- so I always take advantage of of the free pickle out of the barrel haha.

Tiny hole-in-the-wall with no indoor seating and the best sandwiches in Montana, with a couple menu items vying for best-in-class west of Philadelphia. Ate here the first time in 1983, and it's as good now as it was then. Their cheesesteak isn't a traditional Philly, so if you're gonna whimper about that, ask for the ingredients before you order it. That said, it's the most delicious hot sandwich I've ever eaten, including in Philly. Dragonslayer is a mountain of awesomeness. Turkey also good. And for vegetarians, my wife (who merely tolerates my trips home to Montana) looks forward to the PB's vegetarian sandwich as a high point of each visit. Eat here.

  • Sam B.

I wouldn't say this place was bad, but I wouldn't say it was great either. You definitely get more bang for your buck, but the sandwiches are just slapped together. There really is no refinement to your 'wiches. We had the chicken curry and the mushroom steak. All was flavorful and filling. A lot of food though and very messy. If you're ok with limited options (especially in bread) and want something hearty, cheap and quick, then this place is perfect. But if you're on a health-kick and want some multi-grain bread, then don't bother. Also, definitely just get a half sandwich. These things are huge!

  • Patrick H.

I will say right off the bat that I didn't love the Cheese Steak I had. Their style had some sort of bbq sauce that made it more of a bbq steak sandwich. Why five stars? Because my wife's plain turkey sandwich with all the veggies on it was the perfect sandwich. I ate my whole sandwich and half of hers. I kept bugging her to take me back for days after we went here. I loved the tiny inside of the restaurant and I loved the literal pickle barrel. The bread was great and the staff seemed to have a good way about them.

Twelve years later, still the best cheese steak I've ever eaten. Different than others, but still the best. I come back once or twice a year, one of the first stops when I get into town.

I went to school at MSU years ago and the one thing I miss is the Pickle Barrel. When ever I come home to Helena, my husband and I always take a road trip to Bozeman for a sandwich at the Pickle Barrel. I love their cold sandwiches and the cheese steaks. The sandwiches are huge, I typically only eat half of a half because I need to save room for ice cream. I love the ice cream parlor and the homemade waffle cone.

Big sandwiches. Yummy mushroom cheesesteak Great pickles too!

  • Shaun K.

It's a tiny little shack that serves ginormous, delicious sandwiches. The Bobcat introduced me to the joys of the roast beef and turkey combination. Also recommend the Dragon Slayer. You can only eat a half, trust me. Oh, Pickle Barrel, I dream of you when i am gone from Bozeman!

    (5)
  • Tobe H.

For me the experience of dining at the Pickle Barrel has always been amazing. Every sandwich is excellent. The cheese steaks are superb. I have spent many cool fall, spring, and winter days greedily devouring greasy foot long subs. The employee's are easy going. This must be a fun place to work. However, I have never enjoyed grabbing a pickle from the barrel. It's kinda of a hassle to wrangle a pickle with tongs out of a barrel. This is especially compounded by the crowded space within this tiny shop. It kinda stresses me out.

    (5)
  • C H.

A good place for a cold sub with lots of meat. You can tell they don't use the best meats but you do get a lot of it. I really like the Bobcat Special as it has probably close to a pound of Turkey and Roast Beef. If you want a hot sub or sandwich there are better places in town. Stay away from their mushroom steak, they use canned mushrooms and it tastes like rubber and meat.

  • Marianne H.

BEST SANDWICHES EVER! Bobcat special every time. This place holds a special place in my heart. My dad is originally from Bozeman and so we come up to Montana every summer to visit family. It was always a ritual to walk from my aunt's house right around the corner to come to Pickle Barrel for sandwiches and then have ice cream next door. If I was going to MSU I'd be here everyday.

    (5)
  • Jace V.

I have loved the Pickle since the early 90's and grew up with it as the only alternative to Subway. I recommend "The Dragon Slayer" which is my favorite. Great place to grab a sub on the run!

    (4)
  • Jason C.

This is a place where you can get huge food. Don't order more than a half sandwich, and that is if you are really hungry. The bread is soft, the cold cuts are pretty good and they are fast. Much better than any subway. Don't forget to get your own pickle on the way out, they are in the barrel by the door.

ZA BEST. Ordered the cheese steak and it was awesome. Huge and awesome.

Plain steak sandwich is an epic failure. I came because of a promise of an 18 inch cheesesteak. Due to an admitted ordering mistake, received previously mentioned sandwich o' nastiness. To describe it is to relive a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, but I do it for you yelp. Nearly two feet of flavorless, white hoagie roll encasing chewy chunks of steak with "BBQ sauce." Doesn't sound bad huh? You think I'm just being picky, don't you? Unfortunately, "bbq sauce" really means "frickin disgusting manwich liquid." It was like somebody took all the worst components of your aunt janice's Iowa-style meatloaf, pureed it into a orange-red mess then regurgitated it onto a sandwich. Here's the taste sensations- Nasty sweaty onion (And I am really into onions btw) Acidic and spicy tang that gave aforementioned vomit taste. What had to be ketchup. God I hate ketchup. That sauce was so bad that keeping a sandwich like that available to the public automatically gives a bad review to this place. Other sandwiches looked perfectly edible, but there is absolutely no reason to serve what was essentially ketchup-bile on white bread. Man, I'm getting worked up just thinking about that sandwich. One last thing- although the sandwich was huge as promised, it was 12 bucks for a LOT of bread. You can do better. I'm sorry I ordered so poorly but I'm more sorry that anyone would serve that crap to another human being.

SOOOOOO worth it. I've been to this place for close to 30 years and it never changes. Same dirty hippies working behind the counter. Same tiny shanty feel. Same giant and amazing sandwiches. Same pickles. Whenever I am near Bozeman I will always go out of my way to find it. Not being a local means I have to wander... And a special thanks to the owner who went out of his way to buy my daughters ice cream cones. While I've been a long-time fan (which he didn't know), that sealed the deal.

  • Rainey S.

1/2 a Dragonslayer with no lettuce or mayo and a Dr Pepper please. That's all.. oh and thanks Pickle Barrel...without you I'd have starved at MSU. :-)

  • Well-Traveled I.

Kick-a## subs. Cash only. Make sure to grab your own pickle on the way out with your honking slabs of beef on bread. If you're a Pickle Barrel Virgin, get a half - a whole is equivalent to the large hoagy Homer had and had to eat over several days (unless you can handle it, of course, then go for it!). I downgraded this from 4 stars to 3 stars as it seems their quality has suffered in the last few months, resulting in indigestion - and I'm not one of those fast food junkies whose cast iron stomachs were melded in MSG and fat from constant takeout. UPDATE: For some reason, the quality of these subs has gone downhill - not sure why. Stomach aches are a side order now when you order your sandwich. Not sure if I want to go back and pay money for self-inflicted discomfort.

  • Bill E.

I used to come here often, years ago. It was good, or at least I thought it was at the time (long time ago) So, last week when I stopped in I hoped it still would be. I'm not sure if it's the same and my tastes have improved over the years? Or was it just kind of mediocre then, like it is now? The place is still charming and the staff was cool... but it just lacked something. Sad but true.
